DeBacks recap right here on PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX.
Thrilled to have you guys here joining us for another edition of
PHNX-D-BACs recap, this time talking about the Arizona Diamondbacks victory over the Los Angeles Angels,
a.k.a. the Anaheim Angels that we still want to call them that.
Winning on Monday night by a score of four to three, and doing so based on the pure power of
Pavin Smith. Yes, you heard me right there. The pure power of Paveen Smith. Pave and Smith heard what we said
on the podcast on Monday, was disgusted with us and decided he was going to prove us wrong and did so
leading the way to a four to three victory going two to four and hitting his first home run
of the season, part of a D-BAC's two-run seventh inning that helped them secure.
the win in this game and walk away with a four to three victory. And it was a game of course,
the Diamondbacks. Things didn't all go their way. Things didn't go the Angels way either. But
we probably have a lot of apologizing to do to Pave and Smith regardless. You can also argue that
our criticism of Pave and Smith is the reason why we saw him go off for his first home run
yesterday. There late in the game in the seventh inning, the Diamondbacks and Angels were tied by a
score of two to two and payvon smith after jordan lawler got hit by a pitch and then was picked off at first
base goes yard to right field a hundred and three point four miles per hour off the bat three hundred
eighty four feet for his first home run of the season that gave the diamond backs a three to two lead
now i'm not ready to declare that paven's back and i'm not ready to necessarily make damon apologize
on every episode going forward like we did with Ildamaro Vargas.
However, I will say that this is the reason why when people were wondering as to the decisions made by this team,
the roster decisions, bringing Lordus Guriel Jr. back on Monday reinstating him from the 10-day IL
and optioning Ryan Waldschmidt down to AAA Reno.
Many people wanted it to be Jorge Barrosa or Payman Smith.
And based on the way that those guys have performed offensively this year,
it's understandable for fans to want that.
However, you know, my main reason for it is that we are as fans much more impatient than these organizations are.
And we also don't really think of the, you know, players that are struggling as guys that can either rebound or have value in any way.
We simply say phrases like, get this bomb off my baseball team.
and that's how we go about it as fans.
But in reality, a guy like Pavin Smith is somebody that the D-BACs truly still believe in
and truly have faith in turning things around.
They felt like him having more time, more at-bats was going to allow for, you know, a turnaround.
We're talking about when this game started, Pavan was on the precipice of having a below-100 batting average this season.
And I believe after his first at bat, I believe he did have like a 1-0.
to batting average.
And again, that's, that, that is reason, that is understandable reason for people to be
frustrated with him.
And, you know, in his first at bat, in the second inning, he strikes out swinging.
But overall, Pavin steps up and gives this team a huge night on a night where he probably
needed to prove himself, you know, he needed to kind of come through for this team and not
necessarily just be an automatic out at the bottom portion of the starting lineup like he has
been in the past and he delivered again two for four with a big home run his first of the year that
put this team ahead that was followed by a very very important run scored by kattel marty and
haroldo perdomo that ended up truly being the game winner with two outs in the inning after
paven had homered and put the debacks up three to two kutel marty singled to right field and then
perdomo hit a sharp line drive to left field to score kattel marty and put the diamondbacks up
by a score of four to two at the time.
Later in the ninth inning, Paul Seawald came on in an attempt to get his 18th save of the year,
and he did give up a solo home run in that inning.
So that run by Marte and Pardomo ended up being huge.
Donovan Walton hit his second homer in consecutive nights and his second homer of the year
to push the Angels up to three.
but Seawald was able to hold on for the final out.
He got two strikeouts for the kids,
and he gets his 18th save now sitting at 18 out of 19 save opportunities on the year.
Incredible stuff from Paul Seawald,
and he currently has one of the highest,
not only totals of saves,
but conversion rate in baseball for a closer.
Something I'm sure that we're all shocked to see,
but it's a pleasant surprise.
It's fantastic that Seawalt has been as good as he has been.
He has been a key to the rest of this bullpen being as good as it's been.
Jonathan Loisica, aka Johnny Lazzania, came in in the eighth.
He got an inning of work.
But all of this was set up by Ryan Nelson's fantastic day.
Ryan Nelson gave the Diamondbacks his fifth outing of seven innings or more this season,
going seven innings deep against the Angels, giving up a lot of hits, nine hits,
but only two earned runs, no walks, and four.
five strikeouts. Nellie was pretty good with his, uh, with, with, with his breaking stuff tonight.
This was against an angel's team that hits the fastball very well, one of the best fastball
hitting teams in baseball. And Ryan Nelson, 60% fastball usage, uh, in his starts. So, uh, this,
this was like, uh, the, you know, the immovable object versus the undeniable force, right?
So, uh, somehow, some way Ryan Nelson, limits the damage and gives this team a, you know,
another quality start by a starting pitcher this season and allows them to secure the four to
three victory. And this Angels team is not a very good team, but they're better than their record
indicates. They're better than what, you know, the overall on-field product looks like. You
just have moments like how the Diamondbacks scored their first run that seemed to make this
team look like a bit of a clown show in the first inning with one out Perdomo walks and then
Corbyn Carroll flies out to foul territory.
Their second baseman, Oswald Parraza, comes crashing in, calling for the ball and in position
to catch the ball and make the out.
And instead, what you have is Joe Adele actually crashing in from the outfield, not calling
for the ball and colliding with Paraza, who went down on the field and was down for several
moments.
He did end up staying in the game, but it looked like he might have been injured and might
have had to leave the game.
more importantly though this entire situation allowed perdomo who had walked the previous at bat
to advance to third base and now be in scoring position for gabriel moreno who's
singled and brought perdomo home for the diamondbacks first run in the inning right these are the
kind of mistakes that major league baseball team cannot make you know and expect to win
baseball games and more importantly this is not the kind of mistake that a team like this that's
going through the struggles that they're going through can make diamondbacks are in a very
similar position where they kind of have to play damn near perfect baseball to win some of these
games. And they now improve on the year to 13 and 12 in one run games. Not exactly an outrageously good
record, but still shows that this team has been able to compete in close competitions and close
games. Overall, just an impressive performance by this team, despite the fact that their offense
still really isn't back. They did get good contributions all over the place, though. Perdomo was one
for two with two walks. Marte one for four. Carol one for four. Moreno one for four. Gurriel in his return,
one for four, Arnato one for four nights. But Pavin Smith, if this was a post game show, would be our
king snake going two for four with that big home run that ended up putting the Diamondbacks ahead.
But overall here, just a good victory against the team the Diamondback should beat. They should win
against and again during a stretch where they have several games here coming up that they should
win right you have the angels ahead of you you have the twins ahead of you the st louis cardinals
they're going to be a little bit difficult of a team right but beyond that you also have some
winnable series so the diamondbacks hopefully can stack some wins here and close out the month
of june strong uh but we'll see right this is very similar to that stretch against the rockies
and the Giants where, you know, let's see how this team performs.
And then we can reassess on the other side,
maybe here when they play the Cardinals,
who has been playing some pretty good baseball,
if they are, in fact, any kind of playoff team.
But, of course, until then, you know where to find me.
You can find me on social.
I am at cap underscore caveman with a K.
Our show is at PHNX underscore DBAX,

a wonderful rest of your afternoon.

and remember kids.
Baseball is fun, but it is more fun
