PHNX Arizona Diamondbacks Podcast - Diamondbacks blow EIGHT-RUN lead, lose Gabriel Moreno to injury in crushing loss to Brewers
Episode Date: September 22, 2024With an 8-0 lead in the third inning, the Diamondbacks appeared to be on the verge of a four-game series sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers. But the Brewers stormed back and won, 10-9, in stunning fashion.... Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks lost catcher Gabriel Moreno to left adductor tightness in the fourth inning, which is the same type of injury that cost Moreno more than a month earlier in the season. The Arizona Diamondbacks look to be in good position to sweep the brewers,
but instead they blew an eight-run lead leading to what we are calling the worst loss ever.
Join us right now.
Don't go anywhere.
Stick around.
We'll be talking about this in 30 seconds.
Well, that was absolutely disgusting.
But we do thank you guys for being here to lament with us about that terrible loss.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor, P.HNX.
This man next to me is your thunderstick,
occasionally known as Jesse Friedman,
and welcome it to the PHNXTBACs podcast,
brought to you by our friends at Bet365.
Of course, make sure you go download the Bet365 app.
Of course, choose your offer using our code of PHNX365
and find out why it is never ordinary.
And Jesse, there is one good thing that comes from that
in relation to Bet365,
and that is Bet365's early payout offer
because at least if you bet on the Diamondbacks today,
you won at some point with that.
going up by five runs or more.
But the Diamondbacks did blow an eight run lead to lose this one in the finale to the
Brewer's 10 to 9.
This is a devastating loss, Jesse, despite the fact that the Diamondbacks took three
out of four from Milwaukee in the series.
Yeah, I mean, it's all about the way that it happened, right?
If the Diamondbacks had fallen down by a wide margin early in this game and then found
their way back and made it close at the end but still lost then you know it's okay right you still took
three out of four games in the series which is a massive win for them in the grand scheme of things
uh but yeah i mean they had a really really really really good chance to sweep the Milwaukee brewers
it doesn't get much better than uh than an eight nothing lead in the third inning the diamond backs
entering today had never lost a game in which they had an eight run lead so this is the first time that that
happen in franchise history.
They've only blown a seven run lead three times, a couple of times in 2021.
Certainly no shock there.
And then the only other time they've blown a seven run lead in franchise history is all
the way back in 2009.
So, yeah, I mean, these things don't happen very often in this game.
If you have an eight run lead in a baseball game, there is a very, very high chance that
you are going to win.
But you have to give some credit to Milwaukee.
They just kept chipping away.
The Diamondbacks bullpen was obviously.
obviously a little bit short-handed, has been generally quite good here over the last few days,
but was not so good here in this one.
We were so ready to do this emergency podcast based on the Diamondbacks sweeping the Brewers.
This emergency podcast was going to happen, Jesse.
But instead, what we saw was an absolute meltdown from that point on.
So maybe we have some accountability here.
Maybe we should take a little bit of credit for the Diamondbacks losing this one,
because we got too excited.
They were up by eight to nothing.
So I don't think you can fault us for that.
Like you said, the Diamondbacks have never lost a game where they were up by eight runs or more.
And on top of that, Jesse, I would debate that this is the worst loss in franchise history
based on how important the game itself was.
Yes, the Diamondbacks took three out of four.
And yes, had you told either of us prior to the series that they were going to do,
that we would have been like hey awesome that's a great outcome and it should still be considered
that however today's loss i don't know is it a wake-up call or is it demoralizing jesse does it
absolutely make you feel like you are the worst team on the planet because you couldn't hold an eight-run
lead or do you just shake this one off and move on and say baseball so crazy i mean i i imagine
it'll it'll take a little while to shake off a game like this
The devax, I mean, they've bounced back from some really tough losses this year.
You know, if we look back on on all the games that have sort of been like this,
they have not blown an eight run lead this year, but they have lost some other games in
pretty crushing fashion.
You know, they've generally been able to kind of bounce back and move on from these things
pretty quickly.
But this is a really tough one.
And one point I do want to make about this game is if you're blaming Tori Lavello, I just
don't know what to tell you.
You know, there are certainly games this year where Tori, you know,
has made questionable decisions.
You know, a week ago today,
the Diamondbacks played an absolutely insane game with the Milwaukee Brewers.
And we were on here talking about Jeff Bannister,
who was filling in that day,
making a very questionable decision to pitch to Jackson Cheerio.
And of course, that backfired.
The Diamondbacks wound up winning the game anyway.
But today, this is on the Diamondbacks bullpen.
This is on you need those guys to be better.
than the way that they were today.
If you're wondering why AJ Puck didn't pitch,
he had already gone three days in a row.
I don't think there's a single manager in baseball
that's pitching their best reliever four days in a row.
It's just not something that you do,
even as we get into crunch time here at the end of the season.
So you need these guys to perform.
And I think today, Derek,
was an example of a Diamond Bucks bullpen
that frankly is a little bit shaky, right?
We've talked about it for a while.
It has felt like it's just AJ Puck
and then everyone else.
And that is very much the vibe that you get after watching this game.
Well, Gilbert Diaz didn't have a clean outing, Jesse.
He got himself into some jams,
but he was able to keep himself out of those jams without runs really scoring,
aside from the fact that he didn't get some great defense behind him.
So he did allow one run, but it wasn't earned.
And his total line was one and two thirds innings pitch,
two hits allowed, one walk, two strikeouts, and that one run scoring.
But Ryan Thompson.
yikes i mean the brewers had thompson figured out jesse from from the get-go he didn't fool them
one bit i mean the very first pitch he threw was a single by garret mitchell who then stole second
and scored on a rees hoskins double and then that that inning that that goddamn inning jessie
it just went on and on and there was just nothing that the diamondbacks could do to stop the bleeding
once that inning started happening there in the eighth and i mean again the like you said the breers did
chip away at the lead. They didn't give up. They were down eight to nothing. They scored one in the
bottom of the third. They scored two more in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan Montgomery did what
Jordan Montgomery does, right? Like he went out there. He didn't give you a lengthy outing. He gave you
four in a third innings pitch. He gave up three earned runs. He struck out some guys. His
curve ball looked decent at times. I mean, he threw that the majority of it. He got some whiffs on it.
But I mean, Jordan Montgomery is going to get, he's going to give up three,
two to three earned runs and he's going to get you close to five out, five innings pitch.
That's what he does lately.
And that's almost what you could feel like you can count on him doing,
whether it's out of the bullpen or starting.
Yeah, I mean, it wasn't a great day for Jordan Montgomery,
but yeah, it wasn't a terrible day either.
I mean, this is sort of what, sort of what you expect from him at this point,
you know, maybe pitching into the fifth inning, giving up three runs,
at least giving you a chance to win,
especially with how good this offense has been this season.
But yeah, I mean, I think another takeaway here is that it's really hard when you're starting
pitchers don't pitch deeply into games, right?
And this goes back to yesterday even with Merrill Kelly, who is who is throwing extremely,
extremely well.
And then once again, the cramp issue pops up this time it was his right calf as opposed
to his right hamstring.
And I think the debacks are also, you know, feeling the effects of that.
I think they're also feeling the effects of Zach Gallen, only going five innings the day before that.
You need your starting pitchers to be able to go deep into games every now and then, especially these front line guys like Zach Gallen and Merrill Kelly.
And when that doesn't happen for a few days in a row, you wind up with a heavily tax bullpen.
You know, the sort of downside of winning three straight games in a row like the Divax did is that all of those high leverage guys had been used quite a bit coming into this game.
and yeah again i don't think a j puck was was available understandably so and these other guys
have just looked pretty shaky here for a while now um well back to ryan thompson
uh ryan thompson is not doing a lot for this team to help them win at times and i mean
honestly that this comes right on i think the back of me saying on friday that ryan
thompson has been pretty good it was because you know he hadn't been he was he was good for
his last like two outings and then today he was just flat out terrible.
I think the bigger problem is is that opposing teams feel Jesse like they can just steal bases
at will against Ryan Thompson out there. They've definitely figured something out about his delivery
or about his ability to keep guys on base that they can exploit and they're doing that.
Yeah, Thompson is just pretty slow to the play. His mechanics are obviously a little bit unconventional.
and yeah, I think it makes them a little bit easier to run on this season.
Opposing base dealers are now 17 for 18 when Ryan Thompson is on the mound.
And again, that's, you know, that's not just all him.
I'm sure there's some element of Adrian Del Castillo and Jose Herrera for all the time that they've been behind the plate.
You know, obviously those guys leave something to be desired when it comes to catching base Steelers.
But it goes beyond that.
I mean, you can see pretty clearly a lot of these stolen bases are just taken on Thompson.
or he's just not paying a ton of attention to the guys on base.
But even his inning, I mean, that inning could have gone a lot worse, right?
Thompson gave up two runs in that frame.
It looked like the Brewers might be able to push across more.
A ground ball to third base, D-Backs are able to get Willie Adomis at the plate,
which was really, really big.
Jose Herrera made a very, very nice play, putting the tag on Adamas.
And next guy grounds into an inning-double play.
And there you go.
Thompson's out of the frame.
I didn't really take the Brewers come back seriously until that eighth inning when the DVACs got two outs and they just could not get another out in that inning, right?
All of the runs, all four runs that Milwaukee scored in that eighth came with two outs.
And at a certain point, it was like, yeah, I mean, I guess the Brewers can do this.
And, yeah, Mantiply was not as sharp as we've seen lately.
So yeah, it was just a just a brutal, brutal game to watch.
Yeah, it just, the eighth inning did not end.
The everything that this team tried to do there late to keep the brewers from scoring runs in the seventh and eighth inning was unsuccessful.
And it was just a shameful showing from a bullpen that's probably been overworked a bit lately.
And also just, I mean, even even in a few instances, they really didn't get helped out much by their defense.
behind them either late in the game, which is something the Diamondbacks obviously have had as
their calling card. But Ryan Thompson, I mean, since August 1st, Jesse, 6.27 ERA 329 opponent
batting average. Yeah, and that's coming into today. Both of those numbers probably just went up.
So, yeah, he's really struggled. And Kevin Ginkle still hasn't really looked right lately.
Justin Martinez, you've seen him look not as sharp here for a while now.
So, yeah, it's tough.
I mean, going into the bullpen or going into the postseason,
if the Diamondbacks are able to make it there,
and they're still in very good position to do so even after losing today,
one of the biggest questions is going to be what do those late innings look like?
Last season, they had Thompson, Ginkle, C-Walds.
I mean, it just felt like an automatic win for the team backs once they got through six
innings with a lead.
You know, even Andrew Saul-Frank was really on a nice run going into the playoffs.
This is a pretty different group.
And it's not to say that those guys couldn't maybe be okay in the playoffs.
I mean, I still think Kevin Ginkle is a really talented pitcher.
It wouldn't shock me if he turned things around.
But.
Okay.
And then you have Puck.
Yeah, and then you have Puck.
And you have other guys too, like Joe Mantapli, even though today wasn't good.
He looked really, really good in the game yesterday, striking out four inning or
striking out four and giving Tori two innings.
So it's not a group that I think is terrible,
but the current version that we're seeing is not particularly good.
Yeah.
Pondonki says, I stopped watching.
WTF happened.
It depends on at what point you stopped watching, PD,
because if you stopped watching early,
a lot of bad things happen.
And mostly also, the Diamondbacks didn't score much
outside of that huge third inning where they, you know,
know, scored seven runs and just kind of went off.
I mean, it was a huge, it was a huge day.
It felt like a great day where the Diamondbacks felt like everything was going their way until it didn't.
And of course, that kind of happened pretty fast.
Diamondbacks went up early like they do.
Ketel hit an early home run.
That was his 13th home run of the year in the first inning, which is third most in MLB behind
Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwabre.
So that's cool.
Also, Kattel's 13 home runs in the first inning are.
tied for the most in a season by a D-back tied with Paul Gulchman, who did it in 2018.
So, yeah, the Diamondbacks, again, scored early, and then they kind of didn't score very
much after that until late in the game.
And, of course, they lose this one by a score 10 to 9, which just is hard to swallow.
It's not just the loss of the game, though, Jesse.
It's the potential loss of Gabby Moreno, which is the other huge part of this game.
The other huge story here is that.
that Moreno exited in the fourth inning with left adductor tightness,
which is the same leg that kept him on the aisle for more than a month.
Now, I do know that they talked a bit on the broadcast about it being precautionary.
They said the word precautionary like 10 times,
trying to make me not have a panic attack.
But I don't trust them.
I know the only thing around here is the numbers.
They're the only thing that doesn't lie.
Everybody else lies around here.
So what are your thoughts on seeing Gabby exit this game
and how big of a loss is it, should they lose Gabby for another extended period of time?
Yeah, I mean, if the debacks did lose Gabby for an extended period of time,
I think that's a much bigger loss than this game is, frankly.
I mean, the debacks are still, they're still in a pretty good spot as far as their postseason
pursuit is concerned.
But Gabby's a really, really important part of this team, obviously a really, really important
part of, you know, stopping the opposing team's run game.
And, you know, for as much as Jose Herrera, I think has been better offensively.
We saw him hit his first career home run yesterday, which was a lot of fun to see.
There's still an enormous gap between having Herrera in that eight spot versus having Moreno in that eight spot.
I mean, it's, you know, it's a guy who has a 600 OPS versus a guy who's who's an above league average hitter in Moreno.
So, yeah, that's really the biggest storyline from today, honestly.
And we did get what sounded like positive news from Tori.
just on the broadcast after this game, he said that Moreno is going to have an MRI tomorrow,
but he said he feels very strongly that he is going to be able to avoid an IL stint
and said that their current plan is for him to probably not start tomorrow,
but be available off the bench.
But yeah, it's all going to hinge on what the MRI shows.
We'll hopefully get that news sometime tomorrow.
It's just, it's such a devastating blow to this team because not only do you lose Gabby potentially at the plate, but we know what Gabby does for the pitching staff behind the plate, right?
And Ina said it in regards to Monty showed how distressed he was when Gabby left.
He was not happy to see Jose.
And I don't know if he wasn't happy to see Jose or not, but I do feel like there's a couple of things there.
not only do you as a pitcher probably not want to change catchers in the middle of the game like that,
just due to the, you know, kind of being in sync and what you had going on.
But, yeah, I'm sure a lot of the pitchers do like working with Gabby based on the fact that
Gabby can help them achieve better results, potentially better than Jose Herrera or ADC, can
help them achieve.
And again, I'm a maniac that watched entirely too many hours of catchers position and how that can
impact, you know, pitching and calls by the home plate umpire. But it's huge. It's huge.
We know that. We know that's why there are world class catchers out there that you,
you know, absolutely make pitchers on their staff look, look much better than they did anywhere
else. Yeah, I mean, it's hard for me to tell, you know, if, if Gabby stays in,
does the bullpen give up two runs instead of seven? Like, I don't know. It's, it's kind of hard to
really read that. You threw that out there. I didn't, but that's a speculation.
I like to speculate about a little bit,
dude, speculate and speculate.
I mean, yeah, I don't really believe that,
but it's obviously something that you can't,
there's not really a way to say one way or another.
But I think at the end of the day,
like your relief pitchers need to be able to execute
with Jose Herrera behind the plate.
Is he is good at stopping the run game?
Again, no, he certainly is not.
And that was a factor maybe at times.
But I don't think that was a very big factor.
I mean, whether your starting catcher is in there
or your backup catcher is in there,
there. You have to be able to execute pitches better than we saw that group execute today.
And yeah, it just goes back to what we've been saying about this bullpen and specifically the
lower leverage guys with Seawald Hurt and with Dylan Floro now out of the picture as well.
What does it look like when the debacks have a big lead and they're trying to avoid using
some of those back end arms? It didn't work today, right? They basically wound up having to use all
their back end arms.
I guess Ginkle was maybe available and wasn't used, but Tori used everyone else.
And they weren't able to keep Milwaukee at bay, right?
Yulbert Diaz, I thought looked okay.
It wasn't awful, but he sort of cost himself with a throwing air of his own.
And then the other guys who came in, it just was not as sharp as it needed to be.

Cush Main says should have kept the coyotes.
No disagreement there, Cush.
no disagreement at all.
And then he said sold these guys.
Now that I disagree with.
Hold on.
I need a job.
So let's calm down about throwing the diamondbacks out of town.
But of course,
like Jesse said,
the diamondbacks are not out of the playoff race.
Obviously, we know that.
But let's take a look at where they are in the standings
with this updated wild card graphic.
Of course,
you still have the three teams up there at the top competing for,
I guess,
those two top spots.
And I think the Diamondbacks did a pretty good job of knocking the Brewers out of contention for that.
But I think they'll still be trying to play for, you know, one of those two spots to get a buy in the first round.
Now you have the Padres up by three games.
The Diamondbacks up by just a half a game on the Mets.
And then the Braves now with their win today is just a game and a half back in the hunt.
And then there's those other teams that now have an E next to their name because they have been eliminated.
Yeah, this is, the Braves did not play Marlins particularly well this weekend,
but they did find a way to come away with two out of three wins.
So they win today.
And yeah, they gain a game on the debacks.
That lead goes from three games down to two games.
And yeah, the debacks are again, they're still in a pretty good spot here.
We'll see what happens with the Phillies Mets game tonight.
That'll be an interesting one.
Zach Wheeler's on the mound for Philadelphia.
So you feel like the Phillies maybe have the upper hand in that one.
But again, they have something to play for.
Not only do they hate the Mets, but they can't lose ground on the Brewers right now who did end up
winning this game, right?
They need to kind of keep pace so that they can clinch that first round by.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks have six games left, three against the Giants, three against
the Padres.
And man, this is exciting.
this is it. I mean, this is
where you need to play your best baseball
and where Tori needs to figure it out as far as who the guys
he's going to rely on down this stretch are.
I mean, it sucks for them,
but they need to pull out all the stops and win every single game
and they can't let what happened today happen again.
Yeah, I mean, I would still stand by what I said earlier
in that I think if you're the debacks,
you'd rather face the Brewers in the first round than the Padres
despite what happened today.
So, you know, in the back of my head, I'm thinking, well, the debaq's falling from the third, from the second spot to the third spot, letting the Mets have the second spot wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for them.
No.
But obviously, that is a, you know, that's a fine line to walk because you don't, you want to make sure that you are in the playoffs to begin with.
And with that lead over Atlanta, shrinking down to two games, you know, this is a, this is a tough day on that front.
So.
Jesse, Jesse, if the Diamondbacks miss the postseason.
And they miss it by one game, one loss, one win was the difference.
This day that we just experienced is going to be on Tori Lavello's mind for a very, very long time, right?
That's why this is such a crucial loss here.
Not only is it legitimately the biggest allowed comeback in franchise history at one of the worst times that it could have occurred.
But, I mean, the Diamondbacks are that close.
It's, it's, the margin for error is not there at this point.
However, like I said, I still find myself trying not to be hyperbolic too much about this particular loss based on the fact that the diamondbacks still won three out of four in Milwaukee against a team that honestly handled them really well at Chase Field just a few days ago, right?
So it's encouraging that they were at least able to rebound like this against Milwaukee, who is a potential opponent when that postseason comes around.
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, wouldn't it be fascinating if the Diamondbacks do wind up playing the Brewers in the Wild Card round and going back to Milwaukee?
And the most recent game that they played against the Brewers is this one where they they blew an eight run lead.
Right.
I mean, maybe that's the reason why they end up playing Milwaukee.
Like maybe if maybe Milwaukee would have let them play this game, they would have caught like the Mets instead or something.
Like, oh, man, this is this is the, we don't know which timeline we even live in right now, Jesse.
it might be the worst possible one or it might be the best i don't know but it's exciting it's
at the very least it's exciting right they have these six games against nl west opponents and
these are teams they know very well and have to play their best baseball against at this point
yeah and the debacks are i mean the magic number is still five right we also talked about how
um you know there there is a path for them to clinch with with the magic number i guess being
theoretically lower than that just because the Mets and the Braves play each other this week.
So the debacks get four wins out of their final six games.
Then they are in the postseason no matter what.
If they get to 91 wins on the season, they're currently at 87.
There's no way for both Atlanta and New York to also have 91 wins.
So, yeah, they're still in a good spot.
They still control their destiny.
If they go four and two, that's the end of the story.
They're in the postseason.
But again, I mean, these things.
these things change so quickly, right?
I mean, one moment you've lost back-to-back games to the Colorado Rockies,
and it feels like the sky is falling, and this is the beginning of the end.
And then you rattle off, you know, a really solid win against the Rockies to finish off that series
and three straight wins against a very good Brewers team to start this series.
And then you're like, all right, well, now we're coast into the playoffs, right?
And then this game has the opposite effect where it's such a dramatic loss.
The way that this happened again was so.
It's Jover. It's all Jover again, Jesse.
Yeah, it feels like, all right, well, here you go.
This is the beginning of the end for the Diamondbacks.
The standing say otherwise, though, they're still in it.
They're still in a really good spot.
Taking three out of four in the series is still a really, really good outcome for them.
But yeah, in the moment, it's still not going to feel great to blow an eight run lead to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Well, this is an important week.
So we will be bringing you postgame shows all week long, including maybe some more extra.
shows next weekend because we just, we're sickos for baseball and we can't stop even on,
even on football Sunday.
Here we are doing this show, bringing you updates after a loss, which I know you guys probably,
you hate that.
We hate that.
We all hate this, but this was a pivotal loss and the Diamondbacks need to make sure
that they finish strong at this point.
Of course, we do thank you guys for being here.
We will be back tomorrow night with another postgame show after game one against the San
Francisco Giants.
So make sure to join us for that.
