Starting point is 00:00:10 Skiy and welcome in to another edition of the PHNXD Bax podcast. Holy shit, what a win. What a win by the Diamondbacks in Philadelphia. Of course, my name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as an agitator of Phillies fans. This man next to me never agitates anybody, at least not from his own account. It's my vice mayor, your thunder stick, the one and only Jesse Friedman. Jesse, big win. Diamondbacks absolutely.
Starting point is 00:00:40 spoil Cole Hamill's night and they come away with a game one victory in a close game. I mean, this one got to be a bit of a nail bit of a nail bit of a down to the wire. I don't have any
Starting point is 00:00:56 solid evidence for this, Derek, but it does feel like anytime teams have some sort of emotional pregame ceremony, you know, like a guy's number is retired sort of, you know, Cole Hamill's his sort of a retirement ceremony of sorts for him. Yeah, it feels like the home team is just
Starting point is 00:01:15 destined to win. I mean, that's just sort of, that's just sort of the way it goes. But yeah, the Diamondbacks, I mean, it was a sold out crowd at the bank tonight. I think it was over 44,000. And they did a lot of little things right. And they did some big things right, too, you know, with several home runs in this game. Of course, Gabby Moreno and Jock Peterson going back to back. That was a highlight in this game for sure. Just a well-played, a well-played game. all the way around for the debacks. Diamondbacks win tonight by a count of five to four. Of course, this one ends up being very big for this team
Starting point is 00:01:50 because that means the Diamondbacks are now, Jesse, 38 and 38. They are at the top of Mount 500. Damon, send that little man up the mountain, even though he didn't play in today's game. Let's go. Let's fucking go. No, let's go, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:02:12 That's an amazing feeling. It's an amazing feeling for the Diamondbacks to be at 500. And of course, we always have to preface this. We always have to add in this little asterisk with the injuries that they have. But now, it might have more injuries. What's the word on Gabby and Lord Escouriel? Obviously, we're going to talk about this game, but I feel like the big news is that both of those guys removed from tonight's game.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Yeah, I mean, we don't know a ton at this. point, we do know that Gabriel Moreno was removed with a sprained thumb. And we know that Lorda Scuriel was removed with elbow soreness. But we don't really have any other information beyond that at this point. Gabby, Gabby sprained his thumb, Jesse, sliding into first base in the first base in the first inning, right? Second base in the first inning. And then the man hit a 433-foot fucking dinger with a sprained thumb? The big, that's the, I believe it was your tweet that said this, the longest home run of his career.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Yeah, it was the longest batted ball of his career period. Yeah, that is, that is pretty wild. I mean, you would think that, you would think that a thumb would, could have, at least could have some level of impact on your, on the grip, maybe on the back. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Door knockers up, there we go. All right.
Starting point is 00:03:33 But yeah, I mean, again, it sucks, though. obviously we don't know the extent. We don't really know what this means for maybe losing him. Tucker Barnhart came into the game. Lordus also left the game. It looked like he was in pain after he struck out. It looked like he had kind of swung all the way through to a point where his wrist or his elbow hurt.
Starting point is 00:03:56 And you're saying he was removed due to the elbow soreness. Yeah, we actually do have, it looks like Jody Jackson tweeted about this a few minutes ago, She said that Tori Lavello says X-rays were negative on Gabby's thumb. So certainly good news there. She also said Lourdes Elbow is sore, no x-ray. He said he feels good about them avoiding the injured list right now. But we will see how they feel when they wake up. So yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Thank goodness. Promising news here here on the front end with those guys. The last thing that Diamondbacks need, Derek, is, you know, more guys. Don't even say. Don't even say it. We know that's the last thing we need right now. Obviously, today was a big. win, especially without Catelle Marte in the lineup today. No injury to Catell. He was just out due to
Starting point is 00:04:40 this being a really odd scheduled day off for Tori Lovallo. I again, love Tori. You know that. I don't even try to pretend like I'm unbiased, just like the Phillies announcers tonight on the Apple broadcast didn't pretend like they were being unbiased, though they didn't know, they didn't all right job. Like, everybody wanted me to come on here and scream about them tonight. Aside from that egregious The interviews felt egregious. The way that was the way it was thrown back, the words that were said, unfortunately, the Arizona Diamondbacks hit home run. I'm unfortunate for who?
Starting point is 00:05:16 Not for us. We're happy that happened. But anyway, I don't try to be unbiased when it comes to Tori. I don't pretend to be unbiased. But I will say that there are very frustrating times to be a fan of this team and watch Tori manage this team. having Catell sitting on game one of a very important series seemed a little egregious. Yet here we are, the Diamondbacks win, and now they have a fresh Cattel for games two and three.
Starting point is 00:05:43 So that's a good thing. We just don't know of who they might not have available in games two and three here with the injuries to Gabby and Lourdes. But huge win, man. I mean, three home runs tonight by the snakes that ended up being the difference makers here, including back-to-back home runs for the seventh time this season. This marks the first time the debacks have hit three home runs or more at Citizens Bank Park since June of 2019, Jesse. So it's been a very long time since they've accomplished that feat.
Starting point is 00:06:14 And I mean, obviously, tonight's game, they needed every single one of those home runs. They needed every run. They needed those last, that last very, very, very crucial run that they got from Herald Operdomo and Blaze, right? So this ended up just being a very exciting game, a game that felt like at times it was slipping away from the Diamondbacks, yet they still managed to lock it down and win a very, very close game. In some ways, I feel like any game at Citizens Bank Park kind of feels like a playoff game.
Starting point is 00:06:51 It just sort of- Yeah, the vibe is incredible. Yeah, just how present fans are during the game. game. I was, I thought it was pretty funny when they were, they were doing the countdown, uh, Yonis style for Jordan Montgomery. Yeah. How do they, how do they run the pitch? Energy up. It's, it's 81 games at that ballpark. I don't understand there's stamina levels as fans. Yeah. It was it was hot. It was hot there too. I think it was in the mid 90s or something when this game started in Philly. You guys must have missed the part where Bryce Harper hit
Starting point is 00:07:22 into a double play with the bases loaded and won out. And then you could literally hear a librarian shush the crowd if you put a microphone in there. No, he's right. He's right. There were times. But I mean, honestly, what's funny about that is I think that just kind of reinforces how great their fans are and how into the game they are. They are not sitting there having side conversations.
Starting point is 00:07:45 You don't hear all of that normal just crowd noise and chatter that you hear at a sporting event. It was dead silent because there was nothing to cheer for. There was nothing for them to be excited about the moment. and there probably is nothing for them to be excited about any time the diamondbacks come to town because we own that fucking bank. It's our bank. We own the vault and we own the bank.
Starting point is 00:08:05 It's the vault and the bank and we own your bank because the diamondbacks just continue to somehow find a way to win. And I mean, again, tonight, Jordan Montgomery wasn't great, was not great. But when you look at his final line against the Philadelphia Phillies team that is very, very good, I don't even understand how this is his line based on my eyeballs watching the game. He went six innings, gave up five hits, two on runs, walked one, struck out five. That's a very good night. I mean, depending on the caliber of your opponent, considering that this is one of the best teams in baseball, that's a very, very good night for Jordan Montgomery.
Starting point is 00:08:43 It really was. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I think I agree with you that the eye test didn't necessarily stream like six in these two runs, one walk, five Ks against one of the best, one of the best offenses in the league. We'll get into that more in a second. But yeah, I mean, just to put up those numbers against the, against the Phillies is huge. And you look at Montgomery now over his last three starts.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Again, two of those came against some pretty bad baseball teams in the Angels and the White Sox. But over his last three starts, he has a 270 ERA, a 114 whip. I think it's 2.2 walks per nine, 8.1Ks per nine, batting average against of 234, which has come down quite a bit here over the last couple of weeks. We got up in the, you know, well over 300, you know, not that long ago. So he's coming around, I think. I, again, would say that this is not Jordan, this is not peak Jordan Montgomery.
Starting point is 00:09:35 I don't think we saw the same level of guy that we saw last season with, with the Rangers and the Cardinals. That's fair. But turning in the start that he did was enormous. And as you said earlier, like there was no margin for error. for the diamondbacks in this game with how things turned out. I mean, I think of Geraldo Pridomo's late RBI double that you mentioned earlier, I think of Ryan Thompson making just unbelievable play to Rob Alec Boehm of an infield single.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Nick Castiano's homers, the next batter homers. That would have been a game time home run, but instead it just brought the Phillies one run closer. And, you know, there were other moments too. Like I think of Bryce Harper. He led off an inning with a double. he maybe should have been on third base. It didn't look like he was really hustling. It bounced high off the right field ball.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Jake McCarthy had to face it down. I think Bryce Arbor probably should have been at third. And then there was a deep flyout later in the inning, which you probably could have scored on. So the Diamondbacks did just enough in this game. And I think the Phillies in certain instances kind of came up short. They did. Nick Castianos was really bad in the outfield.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Like watching him at times reminded me very much of some of the struggles we've had with outfielders at times. And again, it makes me thankful of how good our outfielders have been playing lately, how good our defense has been playing lately. The Diamondbacks absolutely needed every bit of that defense tonight. There was a crucial double play turned right after Blaze Alexander had a chance at a double play that would have been fairly difficult. But that also kept with bases loaded, that kept the Phillies from scoring anymore. And I mean, like the other night, I just whined about things not going the Diamondbacks way. I whined about a game being just like, you know, was that game two against the Nationals, right?
Starting point is 00:11:25 That it felt like nothing really in that game was going the Diamondbacks way. To be fair, they got a lot of breaks tonight. A lot of things did go their way. I felt like the Phillies hitters were jawing with the home plate umpire a lot. And deservedly so. He made some pretty egregious bad calls tonight. But I also feel like he was one of the cooler umpires I've seen because this man, I mean, I don't know if it's the Apple TV mic that we got to hear so much of his conversation.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Yeah, we heard everything almost. He was putting up with a lot and then like really trying to give a realistic, honest explanation that people understood. And it felt like it was working because a number of times there was discussions that were going to be had. And he just was very direct and they were like, that's fair. And they moved on with the night. So even though he was terrible behind the plate, I did very much enjoy some of his conversations he had. But I also can say that because the Diamondbacks won. And to be honest, there were times where it very much felt like even his calls were going their way,
Starting point is 00:12:22 even when the radio calls weren't. But credit, credit to honestly, to the Apple TV crew, considering that they were so, like, the majority of them were Phillies, you know, commentators that I thought they did a good job of talking a lot about the Diamondbacks players and giving them their flowers. There were times where you could just hear how much they wanted the Phillies to win, and they can't change that about themselves. But they talked a lot about Christian Walker and his defense. I love that.
Starting point is 00:12:51 They also talked about the Diamondbacks leading the league in outs above average, which is incredible. And of course, a big reason why they were able, they're able to get back to 500. Yeah, yeah. I thought they, I thought they did all right. There were moments for sure.
Starting point is 00:13:08 I mean, I know the sideline reporter is interviewing Mike Schmidt. And Mike Schmidt, like Mike Schmidt is obviously, is obviously rooting for the Phillies. There's no changing that. He's a Phillies legend. He is a Phillies legend. So when she says,
Starting point is 00:13:23 unfortunately, we're sending it back with a home rhyme. It's in the context of interviewing Mike Schmidt. Like, I don't think that's so egregious. I thought, yeah. She said,
Starting point is 00:13:33 unfortunately, I have to send it back to the booth on an Arizona Diamondbacks home run. Unfortunate for who I say again. Not for me. I had a great time watching it. I think we can all agree, though, Derek, that it wasn't Bob Costas level. All right. It wasn't anywhere close to Bob
Starting point is 00:13:50 Costa's level. So everyone can can rest assured knowing that. Absolutely fair, Jesse. Absolutely fair. Jordan Montgomery, what was working well for him tonight? How was he able to keep himself out of trouble? Because I felt like he got himself into a couple of jams. But then like it wasn't, it wasn't pretty. He wasn't striking a lot of guys out, but he was able to get, you know, the ground balls and flyouts when he needed. He was able to get those out. It's a crucial times. He was. Yeah, it just, it felt like he did just enough, like kind of over and over and over again.
Starting point is 00:14:22 Like, it wasn't, never, never would I, what I say he was dominating or like truly in control. I know, at least I never really felt that way. But he, he, he just continued to make big pitches when he, when he needed to. And as you said earlier, I think he did get a couple of calls here and there on, on called third strikes and whatnot. But it was still, it was still a step in, in the right direction. for Montgomery. I think the Velo just kind of is what it is at this point.
Starting point is 00:14:49 It was still, I believe 91.5 was the average with the sinker. I don't really, it seems a little bit, I don't know. I wouldn't expect the Velo to climb at this stage in the season. We're to the point we're far enough into it where that seems a little far-fetched to me, if I'm being honest. But he appears to be finding ways to make the most out of what he has. And he got some curveball whiffs. I think there were three of those.
Starting point is 00:15:15 He didn't throw a ton of changeups in this game. He kind of worked it in a little bit more toward the end of the out and got a couple whiffs on that pitch too. And yeah, he did he did just enough to get by a very good Phillies team and, and, you know, give the deback six innings of two run ball. Baseball is an extraordinary game. We love it very much, right? But it's also a game where the statistics can really be weighed down by past bad performances
Starting point is 00:15:41 versus how you've been performing as of late. We talked about that. with Ryan Thompson and how ridiculous it was that the race DFAed this guy and what a God sent he's been for our team because essentially because of two bad outings he had as a member of the race that kind of ballooned his ERA and you know you start looking at those stats and all of a sudden instead of like realizing who might be you know the more talented pitcher who might be this or that you just start looking at ERA right Jordan Montgomery obviously has not been the guy that we thought he was going to be coming to this team at least not.
Starting point is 00:16:15 not yet, right? But in his last three starts, he's been very solid. And I mean, you might not be, again, the guy that the Diamondbacks thought that they were getting that they faced in the World Series last year. He also wasn't that guy to begin last year either, right? So, you know, the numbers that he put up in his last three starts feel like he's moving more in the direction of the pitcher he was in the second half of last season. 16 and two-thirds, innings pitched a 2.70 ERA, a 1.14 whip, 2.2 walks per 9, 8.1 strikeouts per 9, and an opponent batting average of 234. I'll take that, Jesse. That plays. Yeah, no, it absolutely does. I mean, I think when we talk about Montgomery maybe not looking like he was dominant in this
Starting point is 00:17:07 game, we can take a look at where the pitches were that were hit. I think we have a graphic that shows where those pitches were. Yeah, here it is. And there's a lot of pitches in the middle here, right? There's a lot of sinkers that very clearly were not put where Montgomery wanted. There's a couple of curveballs left up. You know, there's a few pitches here that I think are fairly well placed as well. But yeah, like Montgomery got away with some stuff. He maybe got a couple of calls. And then he also left some pitches over the middle of the plate that you know, Philly's hitters were not able to, to capitalize on. So, yeah, a step in the right direction, but it's hard for me to look at this chart and be like,
Starting point is 00:17:53 yes, Jordan Montgomery is back. This is, you know, this is the guy that the Diamondbacks paid $25 million for. I don't think he's quite there yet, but again, moving, moving in the right direction. Well, Jesse, we have an odd super chat to address. It comes from Damon Cat. and Damon Cat, which is obviously the arch nemesis of David Dogg, says that the Phillies will trample the debacks the next to meow. You know, that's, that's, it's kind of perfect.
Starting point is 00:18:27 It's well played. I have to acknowledge this is pretty well played. Notice he didn't meow twice because he wouldn't do that, because we bark twice and he does the opposite of what we do. So thank you for your super chat, Damon. and I hope you're very wrong. I hope you couldn't be more wrong. But honestly,
Starting point is 00:18:46 loser talk time. Loser talk time for Derek. They took one game. The Diamondbacks have avoided being swept by the Phillies in Philadelphia. The Phillies are arguably one of the best teams in the league, and they are record-wise the best team in the National League. So for the Diamondbacks to already have this advantage in the series, feels like a lot of the pressure is off.
Starting point is 00:19:08 And it feels like the pressure is now reversed onto the Phillies, like when you turn a figure four in wrestling over. And then inexplicably now the other guys' legs are hurting just because you did that. But anyway, that's a whole other thing. Now it does feel like the Diamondbacks do actually have a solid chance at winning this series, especially with those two things combined. Of course, it won't be game two because they never win game two after they win game one. But it's also, it's also Zach Wheeler against Tommy Henry,
Starting point is 00:19:38 We sacrifice that game, Jesse. We don't care about that game. We already gave that one up when we looked at the schedule and decided to take Jordan Montgomery out of that game and put him tonight and put our guy Tommy Henry in there, which will most likely be a bullpen start. But we do have to talk about the bullpen a little bit, of course, because the bullpen was, once again, they did the thing. It wasn't perfect, not another scoreless night like we've seen out of them over the series against nationals. However, just, you know, obviously limited to damage, just the two earned runs. Kevin Ginkle, not great. He didn't, did not look great tonight.
Starting point is 00:20:17 Joe Mantipli did not really look great tonight. But of course, the guys that they've been able to rely on, Ryan Thompson and Paul Seawald, they were pretty damn good, especially Paul Seawall. I still don't know how he does it. We had the weird thing with Kevin Ginkle for getting his pitchcom or no, Joe Mantiply. That was Manthiply. My apologies. Joe Mantiply forgot his pitchcom. And so then apparently he got a pitch clock violation.
Starting point is 00:20:41 If he would have had it and it was malfunctioning, there would have been no pitch clock violation. But as we clearly heard the umpire say several times, he didn't have it. You didn't have it. You didn't have it? You didn't have it? You didn't have it. It's a violation. Yeah, it's probably hard.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Probably hard for the for the debacks to argue with that. Toro Lavello didn't seem too upset. He came out and then he turned it right around and went back. Yeah, I don't think not having the device counts as the device malfunction. that that doesn't quite work that way. But yeah, this wasn't an exceptionally clean game for the bullpen. There was a moment in the seventh inning where, frankly, it looked like this one might slip away from the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:21:19 I mean, Kevin Ginkle comes out. He strikes out the first batter in the seventh. And then it blocks the number eight and number nine hitters, which is just about as disastrous as it gets with how good the top of the Phillies lineup is. So you've got first and second one out. And then Tori, Tori, you know, did not have a long. leash. He decided to go to Joe Mantiply right then and there to face Kyle Schwerber. And then as you just, as you just mentioned, Mantiply has this whole pitchcom thing.
Starting point is 00:21:47 And then he winds up throwing three just very uncompetitive pitches out of the zone to Schwerber. So Schwaber walks, you've got the bases loaded one out. Trey Turner's at the plate. I think Trey Turner was four for six in his career against Joe Mantiply coming into this game. So that was not a favorable situation for the Diamondbacks whatsoever. he hits a ground ball that Blaze Alexander is able to get to. But as you said before, he wasn't quite able to get to throw off to second.
Starting point is 00:22:13 He decided to go to first. Wasn't able to convert it out there. So a run scores. Now it's a four three game. Base is loaded one out. Bryce Harper at the plate. And this is where it feels like, all right,
Starting point is 00:22:24 you know, the debacks have a one run lead. But, you know, that could very easily change with one swing of the bat. Maybe this is the point where the Phillies sort of take control of the game. And Joe Mantiply throws one pitch. It was a sinker on the inside corner.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Harper rolls over the top, hits it right back to Mantiply. Mantiply made a really nice play. Gets the out at home first. And then Tucker Barnhart makes a nice throw to end the inning on a double play. So, yeah, it's just big of Joe Mantonply to be able to come in and not lose this composure and get the Diamondbacks out of a really tough spot there. This is our group chat known as the Damon Dogs. And I just have to repeat.
Starting point is 00:23:05 a quick portion of it that Jesse and I had a conversation about. I sent a text message that said, if they can figure out a way to hang on. Now, this was very early. I believe this is when the Diamondbacks were up four to nothing. Well, no, I think it was four to two. It was probably 402. Yeah, it was right after the home run by Trey Turner.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Yeah. And then Jesse's response, it's amazing. Jesse responds with, you're probably not going to win with four runs. I'll say that right now. Well, Jesse, you're right. You're not going to win the four runs. And that's why five runs won this game.
Starting point is 00:23:42 So you're very, very savvy of you, as always. And of course, again, just had to touch real fast on how unbelievable that play was by Ryan Thompson because we would maybe still be watching baseball right now. I don't even know. Maybe it didn't go that long in extra endings. But Ryan Thompson really did save the day, saved his own day. And yeah, it's not ideal to go. you know, give up the home run and the next batter,
Starting point is 00:24:05 but still the fact that he was able to make that incredible play and keep a runner off base that ended up being so critical to his own mistake against the next batter, it's huge for this team. And I mean, again, those are the little things, like just keeping it to one run instead of two, keeping, you know, like you said, like even Phillies pulling out all the stops
Starting point is 00:24:24 to try to keep this game as close as possible in order to give their offense a chance to win. This was, this felt very important for both teams. And even with the lead the Phillies have, you know, over the rest of their division and baseball, they wanted to win this game tonight. They wanted to beat the Diamondbacks. They wanted revenge and they wanted to do it on Cole Hamel's night. And it just didn't work out for them.
Starting point is 00:24:44 Didn't work out. Yeah, I was kind of surprised to see Matt Strong pitch in a situation where the Phillies were down. It was kind of like, certainly Tori Lavello, I mean, the way that we've seen him manage over the last couple years, he almost never uses one of his higher leverage guys in a game where the debacks are losing. It just doesn't happen. We wanted him to. Keep it close. Get it in there. Gila. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:08 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And instead we get, we get Logan Allen. We get, you know, Bryce Jarvis. No offense to those guys. But it almost feels like at certain points, once the Diamondbacks have gone down, especially by two runs or more this season, that it is kind of a concession that they're not going to come back. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:27 It was, it was an interesting. moved by Thompson and granted, I haven't looked closely into, you know, their bullpen usage numbers. Maybe Strom hadn't gotten working in a long time or something like that. But it did feel like the Phillies were very much trying to, you know, they wanted to keep this close. They didn't want to keep going to some of their, some of their bee relievers. And granted, the Phillies have a really incredible bullpen. I mean, they have enough, enough elite back-end guys that they can throw Matt Strom for two innings today and still feel like they're in really good position tomorrow, especially with a
Starting point is 00:25:57 guy like with a guy like Zach Wheeler out there on the mound. But yeah, it was it was an interesting move, something we haven't really seen Tori do. I mean, if Tori does use one of his higher leverage guys in a game where the debacks are losing, it's probably because they haven't pitched in like a week. And, you know, debacks might be up by seven or eight runs or something. And, you know, we just need to get, get somebody some work in. We've seen that a little bit recently. But it felt like a playoff game again. I mean, it wasn't, I don't think it was just that Citizens Bank Park was going crazy. That's just the norm.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Like it's always like that. But it felt like there was something a little bit extra where this was this was the NLCS rematch, right? It's just one game of 162. Like, yes, this wasn't an actual playoff game. But I think the Phillies really, really wanted to get this one. We, they lost sleep over us, Jesse. It's one of those rare times as an Arizona sports fan that you can really feel like you got to a team. I don't think we got to the Dodgers as badly as we got to the Phillies because it was
Starting point is 00:27:03 supposed to be over against the Phillies in the NLCS so many times in that series and the Diamondbacks somehow found a way to come back and win it. I think there is a legitimate hatred brewing for the snakes in the city of Brotherly Love and I am here for it. I want them to make songs about us, Jesse. I want them to hate us as much as they hate the fucking Mets. That's what I want. So go out there, sweep their asses this weekend and make this team really hate us, really hate us. And then we'll do that ceremony with the plastic rings when they come to town. And we'll have a good time. You want the, you want the Philly fanatic Garrett Stubbs to sing about us in a song. Is that what you're saying? Yes, that's exactly what I want. Gotcha. Yeah, no, they add us to a verse.
Starting point is 00:27:47 they do despise us. When I was out at the Super Bowl, they sent some PHLY people out. And one of the guys who's a producer on the Anthony Gargano show, he was like, he was like his eye was twitching. Like you could see it while he was talking about it. He was like,
Starting point is 00:28:06 and he was telling me like, I hate you guys. You took everything from us. And it's just like, yeah, I love it. I've never loved anything more. Well, it's because like game six and games.
Starting point is 00:28:17 game seven was just so, I mean, before the Diamondbacks even arrived in town, like pretty much everyone had already decided what the outcome of the series was going to be. And it was hard to, and it was hard to argue with them, right? I mean, the Phillies just, they just don't lose games at Citizens Bank Park. I mean, even this season, I think they're after today, I think they're 25 and five or something like that. Maybe that's just over their last 30 games, but they, they just don't. 20% of their losses this season at Citizens Bank Park, Jesse. That might not be for the whole season. I'm sure they, I would think they have played more than 30 home games at this point, given that, you know, they played like mid, somewhere in the mid-70s games for the season.
Starting point is 00:28:57 But yeah, they just, I mean, the way their home field advantage at that ballpark is second to none across baseball. And for the debacks to go in there and, and take those two games like they did. I mean, it was, it was, I think, stunning. I mean, it was just something that Philly's fans were like how on earth did this happen and uh the debacks i mean this game obviously didn't mean that much but i think it it brought back some some pretty uh some pretty brutal memories that's the guy well uh diamondbacks have some very very wonderful memories from that n lcs but of course uh a big part of that entire run was our guy gabby moreno we haven't had a chance to give him the king snake very much but i think if there was a night where a guy deserves it it's a night where he
Starting point is 00:29:44 hit a home run 433 feet with a goddamn sprained thumb. Gabby two for three tonight, two RBI. And again, big, big, big reason why the Diamondbacks get back to back home runs for just the seven time this year. And it was great. It was great to see Gabby, you know, having a good night. And, you know, again, doing it against the Phillies. Hopefully everything's good with his thumb and we won't see him miss anytime. And if he does miss time, hopefully it's it's a limited amount of time. Yeah, it was it was a just, I think good to see like him take a big swing like that. There was a, I think he got a couple of pitches that were sort of middle middle from Taiwan Walker in his first about of the game. And he just wasn't able to punish them in the same way. Granted, he did still, he did still wind up, you know, hitting a single. He was thrown out at second base. But yeah, every once in a while you see this
Starting point is 00:30:39 version of Gabby where he'll just sort of unload on a pitch. And it's it's something that we haven't seen a ton of this season. And, and granted, three homers this season. Yeah, just, just the three home runs. We, we entered this year thinking that power might be a pretty big part of his game. We certainly saw who. What idiot would think of that? Late last year.
Starting point is 00:31:01 What moron would say that he might have led the team in the league of this season? But absolute fool would even think that. Jesse. Anyway, moving on. I mean, you're not, you might not be wrong, Derek. I mean, we're not even halfway through the season yet. There's plenty of time for Gabby to catch up. But yeah, I don't think that's going to happen. And Taiwan Walker, frankly, also played a role in the D-BAC's power outburst at the beginning of this game. It was not very good today. Walker did not look good at all. There were a lot of uncompetitive misses just kind of spraying the ball all over the place, a lot of sinkers that were just left kind of right over the middle.
Starting point is 00:31:36 Lordis got to a splitter, which is something. I think that was Lordus's second career home run off of a splitter. And that's Walker's best pitch. So he just didn't look good. I continue to, after seeing Spencer Turnbull come in after him, Turnbull. This wasn't maybe his best outing either. But it sure seems like the Phillies should have kept Spencer Turnbull in that rotation spot and had Taiwan Walker do something else.
Starting point is 00:32:03 I know that was sort of a controversial decision for them, it happened. But yeah, Walker was, he was not good in this game and the Diamondbacks were able to capitalize on that. Well, I did want to say it was great to see so many of our diehards and non-diehards last night at Chicken and Pickle. Starting point is 00:33:16 I'm sad because we met for trivia. I am seeded at Jesse. And then I thought I was like one of the last people to leave. Shout out to our D-BACs fans, by the way, because our D-BACs listeners took three of the top four trivia spots, including First place and second place. Shout out to the entire Tendie crew. Shout out to the entire Paving team ERA 0.00 Paveen. We appreciate all of you guys for coming out last night.
Starting point is 00:33:46 Was that their team name? Yeah, their team name was Team Paving, ERA 0.00 was their team name. That's fantastic. Yeah. And then we had team, we had team Tendys. Yeah, it was a great night. We had so many great teams. We had so many great.
Starting point is 00:34:01 It was fun. It was an absolute blast. It was so cool to see so many of you. guys make sure to check out chicken and pickle we'll be doing more trivia nights we're actually going to have a little pickleball tournament coming up here at the end of july max announced that tonight so of course check out either when you come with us or if you don't make sure to check this place out because it's so much fun there's so much to do even if you're not in the pickleball they have wonderful food full bar cocktails upstairs downstairs uh so much space for you to hang out

You can also check out that they're serving up fun for all ages and abilities at their junior pickleball camps this summer. So again, if your kiddos are like mine and they're just sitting around the house on their iPhones all day, go make them play pickleball. They'll have a blast. It's fun. It's an easy game to learn and to play. And again, it's all about getting out there, getting a little exercise, but having some fun when we're doing it. It's not tennis. Tennis is hard. I'm going to tell you that now.
Starting point is 00:35:05 Tennis is very difficult. It's hard to keep it in the white lines. Pickle ball is like big ping pong. And that's why Jesse would probably just be excellent at it. I'm not. Do you remember we had a, we had a group outing, a group pickleball outing at one point. There was a lot of pressure.
Starting point is 00:35:24 Saul was spiking it at us and stuff. That was not a positive environment for you to learn how to play pickleball. We were constantly, we were constantly changing. teams and all I know is that after we were done that someone did like a score tally discovered that my teams had done the worst and to that I say my teammates just didn't pull their weight Derek I don't know what I did everything I could they just couldn't come through when it matters so fairly sure you are familiar with common denominators Jesse being a math teacher so I think you can figure that one out on your own
Starting point is 00:35:56 but head to chicken and pickle.com to see all the fun you can have at their Glendale location that's chicken and pickle.com. So big thank you to them, obviously, for helping me achieve my financial dreams and goals. And also thank you to them for sponsoring the count, which we are going to take a look at right now. So let's work the count presented by Desert Financial Credit Union. And let's take a look at numbers from this series, or excuse me, this game,
Starting point is 00:36:58 Diamondbacks win tonight's game five to four. They out hit the Phillies. nine to seven. They were two for eight with runners in scoring position to the Phillies one for eight. So Diamondbacks, advantage Diamondbacks kind of everywhere here. They hit three home runs to the Phillies two. And then hard hit percentage is the only area where the Phillies did do better. 55.6% of their balls hit were hard hit versus 35.5% for the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:37:25 But you know which ones were hit hard? Those three home runs, Jesse. Those three beautiful home runs. Any time you can out Homer the Phillies, you're putting yourself in a pretty good position. The Phillies this season are fifth in the league, tied for fifth in the league with 88 home runs in 75 games. So there's no secret, right, the top of their lineup with Harper, with Schwerber. Nick Castiano's can certainly run into one every now and then. He did so today.
Starting point is 00:37:53 Trey Turner hit one as well. There's a lot of power in this lineup. And it also kind of reminded me of the playoffs. I mean, see, this is just one game. But in the playoffs, the Diamondback suddenly, at least in sort of the beginning part in the first couple series, they were just hitting Homer's like crazy. And today they were able to do that. They hit three of them in one game against Philly. And all three of those were very important in the Diamondbacks pulling this one out.
Starting point is 00:38:22 I think we have to start talking about the bullpen a little bit, Jesse, because I do believe that the bullpen is. is an asset for this team. I feel like it's much improved from where it was at in the beginning of the season and in times, obviously, from last year. We know what a big impact Paul Seawald has on the bullpen. And when he's here versus not being here, how everybody feels settled into their roles. But does Tori need to start taking a look at maybe changing some of those roles? Because it feels like Justin Martinez has been extremely reliable for this team.
Starting point is 00:38:58 And it's not to say that Tori has not. used him in high leverage situations. But tonight, we saw him once again try to go to Ginkle, Thompson, Seawald. And when Ginkle didn't work out, he had to change course and go to Mantiply, and then Manteply wasn't great. And luckily, they get out of it without the damage being too substantial that they lose the lead. However, I mean, I'm sure a lot of D-BACs fans are sitting there wondering why we're not seeing Justin Martinez in that situation, especially with this game being so close and being such an important game for the snakes. It's a very valid question.
Starting point is 00:39:33 And I don't have a great answer. It's certainly a question that I'd be asking if I were in Philadelphia right now. Yeah, I mean, I don't think it's rocket science like Justin Martinez has very clearly been a better pitcher, you know, between him and him and Ginkle this season. Ginkle has looked better lately, but you're still not really seeing the same degree of swing and miss that we saw last season. I mean, last year, his slider just felt like an unhittable pitch. and this year the whiff rate on every pitch he throws is down is down pretty considerably.
Starting point is 00:40:03 So I just don't really know what else Justin Martinez has to prove. Like what exactly does J-Mart have to do in order to become one of those primary late-inning guys? I mean, his ERA is already what, you know, 0.4 or something like that. I guess he gave up a run the other day. So maybe it's up to 0.6. Yeah. Something like that. But he's been, I mean, he's just been so outstanding.
Starting point is 00:40:29 And there is a difference, to be fair, there is a difference between J-Mart doing what he has been doing in the situations that he's been pitching in, which have been low-leveraged situations generally where the debacks either have a big lead or it's a game where they're losing. But you're not going to know what kind of impact he could have in a late-inning role until you give him that opportunity. And yeah, I don't know. I don't know what Tori Lavello wants to see before he pulls the trigger on that.
Starting point is 00:40:55 Yeah, Justin Martinez currently has a 0.67 ERA with a 1.22 whip. And he's played in 22 games this season, Jesse. So when you say what else does he have to prove, I don't know. It's not like we've had, we've not like we've seen him be unreliable or melt down. It's not like we've seen him be inconsistent. We've seen him, you know, like I remember when he was pitching in front of his parents. Like I feel like the first couple of batters he didn't, he looked shaky. He looked nervous.
Starting point is 00:41:24 he looked like not like himself and then he settled right in and he was dominant in front of mom and dad and he showed off you know he really did yeah it was a great day for him i think that is something that we're that's what we're not seeing at times out of some of those other guys like mantiply and ginkled they don't go out there and look shaky at first and then zone it back in seawald i swear to god always throws at least one terrible pitch like to the first batter that he faces that makes me go oh shit here we go And then manages to lock it in, right? I know pitchers aren't perfect.
Starting point is 00:41:57 I know you're going to go out there sometimes and need to throw a couple of pitches before you're really, you know, dialed in. But, I mean, I just, like you said, I don't know what else Jmart needs to prove. I don't know what else Tori needs to see in order to feel like, especially in a game like tonight, that he can rely on him. LeVallo asked to manage this completely differently. So from his perspective, there might be a plan down the road. He might be moving in that direction, but, you know, he's he's trying to do it to a point where he's giving Ginkle as many chances as he can before he really feels like he might not be the guy for that role.
Starting point is 00:42:34 I feel like Tori to a fault, like sticks with his guys too long, too consistently at times. Unless you're on a hitting streak, then you're going to sit. And that's the way that goes. But that's a whole other thing that I could complain about with Tony. I thought it was really funny that Ryan Spilborgs, you could tell he really wanted J. Mark to pitch. I don't think, I don't think Jay Martin was coming in the game. Yeah, he was like, yeah, he was telling Crook like, oh, just wait until you see this Martinez guy pitched because J. Marte pitched in a high, one of the few high leverage opportunities he's gotten this year was against the Baltimore Orioles about a month, month and a half ago. That was also an Apple TV plus game.
Starting point is 00:43:14 Yeah. When Spilborks is on the call. So Spilbork is like, oh, this J. Mark guy, he's got really good stuff. I want to see him pitch. So yeah, even like an outsider. who doesn't maybe know a whole lot about the Diamondbacks release hasn't been dialed into the team. He's like, oh, yeah, I want that guy pitching late in the game. But yeah, Tori Lavello just doesn't seem to see it that way right now.
Starting point is 00:43:36 Shout out to Ryan, by the way, Jesse, because he was the one on the broadcast that I felt like was trying to give the Diamondbacks players their flowers and stuff. And yeah, he's the Apple TV guy, so he doesn't have that same bias. It almost felt like he was purposefully trying to like even it out by being like, hey, well, also the Diamondbacks have a really good first baseman over there and things like that. So I think that's the best you can do when you're in that situation, especially as a national broadcaster. And you can see that you are just absolutely in the house of people who are on the side of one team. But again, broadcast didn't bother me tonight because the Diamondbacks won, big win for them.
Starting point is 00:44:14 And of course, it's just encouraging, you know, I mean, we had no idea where they were going to be by the time they came into this series. But I'm sure, much like a lot of you fans out there, we were fearful that they were just going to absolutely get punched in the mouth. They were going to come into the series and they were going to get embarrassed because of the Phillies wanting revenge after what happened to the NLCS. And that is absolutely not what happened tonight. The Diamondbacks look prepared. They looked aggressive. They looked ready. And also, let's mic up Geraldo Pardomo every single game.
Starting point is 00:44:47 I want him miced up every single game because that's a very valuable point. part of an entertaining broadcast, Jesse. I need that. Yeah, there were, there were some, there are some funny moments for sure. I mean, just hearing his reactions to the, to the home runs was great. Justin Martinez dancing in the, in the, in the, in the, in the bull. Yeah. Yeah, Justin Martinez, that was probably the funniest moment of the game, honestly,
Starting point is 00:45:11 was Justin Martinez doing his little dance after, uh, I don't remember if that was the Gabby Homer, the, or the jock homer, but I think it was, want to say it was the Gabby Homer. Yeah. But yeah, Perdomo is. is easy entertainment. I mean, if you're, if you're a national broadcast and you're looking for someone on the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:45:28 to give you some good stuff throughout a game, hats off to Apple TV in that sense. I think they, I think they made the right choice. Yeah. It's pretty nuts, guys, that it took until 45 minutes and 30 seconds to mention Geraldo Perdomo's name tonight.
Starting point is 00:45:42 He doesn't, no, we're winning RBI. We mentioned it. We mentioned it. I don't remember. Right off the top. Yeah. You're just not paying attention to us,
Starting point is 00:45:50 man. I want to talk about a massive base knock when the team needed it most. And by the way, Jock Peterson in the in the postgame like media thing that he did with the Apple TV reporter. He did mention the first thing that he said when she's brought up the record 13 and 6 in the month of June, he goes, yeah, it's good to have Pardomo back at shortstop. That's the first thing he said. Yeah, because Pardomo impacts the entire team, Damon. He packs the entire team.
Starting point is 00:46:22 What we saw tonight was someone that not only makes you kind of loose, right? Like he's always joking around. We saw him in the dugout, laugh and having a good time. And it's not to say that he hasn't already, because he's been in the dugout. I just imagine maybe he doesn't go on road games when he was injured. But he was in the dugout while he was injured. It's just really a diff. Yeah, from time to time.
Starting point is 00:46:44 But it was, I think it goes beyond that. I think it goes to the point of not only do you help keep your. teammates loose because you're such a joy to be around. It also is that confidence that you instill in them because you always see him encouraging them. And I mean, again, sometimes, like sometimes when you're an adult, it sounds silly that you would need encouragement. And even the idea of someone coming up to you and saying, hey, man, good job. You got this. Sounds cringy as hell. Like, I don't, I don't want that at all. Get away from me. Like, I need to, I need to focus right now. Yet, you know, in the context of playing a team sport with your teammates.
Starting point is 00:47:22 You can feel very much, especially as a pitcher out there on your, your island, on the mound all by yourself, very isolated, because sometimes the mistakes, the way that the game goes is completely on you and not on anyone else, despite the fact that there are eight other teammates of yours on the field. Perdomo feels like that guy that always remind you that he's there with you and that you are not alone and that he has your back. He is there to support you and you got this because you're fucking awesome. them and you're a badass and you can do this, right? And like, again, it sounds silly as hell,
Starting point is 00:47:56 but like that's probably feels pretty awesome when you're in a moment that doesn't feel that great. We saw Gabby and Perdomo go out to Jordan when he was struggling there a bit. And next thing, you know, Jordan gets out of that inning without allowing a run. And I mean, again, you can't say enough about what Perdomo is actually like, you just didn't see that all the time. You saw a mountain visit and you saw like just Gabby go out there. The fact that Perdomo instantly has that infield, leader comes over from shortstop and joins the discussion just to just to give Monty that pat on the ass and just to tell him that he's you know rad is is is is an incredible thing that I mean seems small but during a baseball game could probably
Starting point is 00:48:35 feel pretty good yeah I I also go back to what Montgomery the comment that Montgomery made I think this was after his start against the Angels on June 11th right when Perdomo first came back and he yeah it was it was an unsolicited We didn't ask you about Pardomo, but he said it's good to have Domo back talking about, as you're saying, some of the words of encouragement and just him kind of, you know, chirping at him and, you know, giving him words of encouragement throughout the game. And since then, Derek, we said it earlier. Montgomery has a 270 ERA in his last few starts.
Starting point is 00:49:09 That goes back to right when her old are Domo rejoined the Diamondback. So do with that what you will. Well, of course, we thank you guys for being here. in the PHNX Sports YouTube channel. You guys are wonderful. There's a whole lot of people watching right now, and that's incredible. Starting point is 00:50:25 Of course, this is another flavoring Friday, and they flavor all of our Fridays. And of course, we love OGs. OGs has a number of wonderful products for you to check out that offer a wide variety of effects, if you will, if you're looking for a sleep edition gummy, if you're looking to chill out, if you are looking to just be happy, they have you covered. They have all sorts of doses from very large doses, like a 100 milligram single dose. That's what I call it. They say you're supposed to cut it into pieces, but a hundred milligram single dose to as small as three milligram micro doses that might be exactly what you're looking for. So check out everything OGs has an offer. I'm a huge fan, not only of the products they produce and the wonderful flavor of their gummies, but I am a huge fan of the people over at OGs.
Starting point is 00:51:12 They are a wonderful company. have been to several of their events and met so many of the people that work for OGs. And I swear to God, the entire crew is solid. So it's wonderful to not only support a company like that, but partner together with them. So that's where I get all my gummies from, you should too. To learn more about OGs gummies and where you can find them, head on over to OGsbrands.com, must be 21 or over to enjoy and please enjoy responsibly. Also, four peaks.
Starting point is 00:51:41 Another great way to celebrate. Jesse, I got Four Peaks on hand all times. This is my 15 pack of Four Peaks juicy golden ale that this whole thing might get drunk tonight. Although, I mean, we don't beat the Phillies. Actually, we do beat the Phillies in Philadelphia often. So maybe I should take that back. But no matter if it's a win or a loss, it's a great time to celebrate with Bad Birdie or get over the loss with Bad Birdie juicy gold nail from our friends at Four Peaks.
Starting point is 00:52:08 They also offer a wide variety. Talk about OG's variety. Four Peaks variety. might even be bigger. So make sure to check out all the beers that they have to offer, whether you're looking for an ale, a logger, an IPA. It doesn't matter. They have you covered.
Starting point is 00:52:21 They have all of the beers. Hazy IPA, juicy IPA. If you're an IPA guy like me, you have found your local beer company. And of course, that's why, again, we love partnering together with companies like Four Peaks and OGs. These are local companies that have, you know, have been here in the valley and are established. So make sure to visit FourPeaks.com slash locator to find all your favorite beers and events. Also, don't sleep on the chicken tendees. There's a reason why one of
Starting point is 00:52:47 the trivia teams named themselves after the chicken tendees at Four Peaks. And I think that speaks for itself. Check out at Four Peaks Brewer at Four Peaks Pub to keep up with the latest Arizona's hometown brewery. Must be 21 or older to drink Four Peaks. And again, please enjoy responsibly. Jesse, very excited. We have a very special guest coming up on Monday that I am not at all going to talk about right now, but I'm going to say, are you not, you're not going to talk about it, I don't know, should we talk about it? I don't want to, I want these people to have a nice weekend. I don't want them to like lose sleep over how exciting it is that our guest, who our guest is on Monday, but I promise you, uh, I'm not, I'm not just hyping this up just
Starting point is 00:53:27 to let you guys down. Huge guests on Monday. Uh, so make sure to be here for that. Uh, of course, Jesse, I know that people might not believe me about that because some people do think I'm a liar, even though I always tell the truth 100% of the time. And I might be lying about that right now. But we know that the numbers, the numbers, they never lie. So what do you have for tonight's number? Yeah, tonight's number is 36. 36 is the launch angle on David Dahl's fly ball against Paul Seawald.
Starting point is 00:54:02 And in the ninth inning, very nearly, very nearly went over the fence. I definitely thought it was gone off the bat. I did too. I think the exit Velo was like 94.5. So it's not only because he got underneath it too much. But I do think the reason that David Dahl, this was a center cut 92-mile-hour fastball, Paul Seawald could not have thrown that pitch any more center-cut than he did.
Starting point is 00:54:27 But I think it's interesting because it gets at what makes Paul Seawald good. What makes Paul Seawald good, even though he throws 92 miles an hour, is that that four-seem fastball has a lot of upward ride, and the fact that he throws the arm at the angle that he does makes it incredibly hard for hitters to get on top of. And so as a result, you wind up with a lot of fly balls on pitches that may not have been put in the best of spots, but it's really hard for hitters to square him up,
Starting point is 00:54:58 kind of regardless of where the pitch is. And we saw that with David Dahl. If I have a feeling, if that is a four-seem fastball, 92 from a guy who doesn't have that funky arm slot and doesn't have as much upward movement as Seawald does. That very well might go over the fence and tie the game. So yeah, just a note, I think it's something we've seen a lot of, frankly, since Seawald joined the Diamondbacks became their closer.
Starting point is 00:55:27 He will throw some pitches in some really bad spots, but it just doesn't feel like hitters are able to do as much with them as you would think. We have a correction from Zach Zent in the comment. Zach said, Jesse, it isn't a fastball. It's a fast walled. So it's a forcing fast walled. A fast walled, interesting. Okay.
Starting point is 00:55:46 Only when Paul Cewald throws it. I don't know why, but that's what he says. Speaking of exciting things, Jesse, we might, might are going to Texas for the All-Star game. So that is something that is looking more and more like where we are going to be for the All-Star game here at this time. just about next month. That's very exciting. Yeah, that's not that far away, is it?
Starting point is 00:56:10 It is not. It's about one month away. We're going to be tagging along with Tori Lobello and bothering him following his everywhere he goes like little lost puppies and whoever else the Diamondbacks send to the All-Star game. So that's going to be fun. But it might just be Catelle, right? I think we have to, people have to prepare themselves for the possibility that
Starting point is 00:56:30 could tell Marte is the Diamondbacks only All-Star. I think it's very possible. I feel like that's egregious. I feel like obviously we know that the position players are voted on by the fans, but then pitchers are still selected. It's just the Diamondbacks really don't have any starting pitchers right now that really feel like they deserve it. I mean, Brandon Fott is the only one who's like actually pitched the full season up to this point. Right. And his numbers don't. He's got some good starts.
Starting point is 00:57:00 But yeah, I don't think we're having a fought in the All-Star game conversation. And more importantly, it makes it harder because if you're not a premier closer or an extraordinarily good reliever, it's hard. Most relievers don't actually make it. I know we sent Joe Mantiply a few years back. So it's not to say it's out of the question. However, Mantelby needed a, they needed someone to represent. And he was the only person on the entire team that felt like he deserved it. But yeah, I'm not going to, I mean, that's, that might be, it might be disappointing.
Starting point is 00:57:33 At least we have Tori... Ryan Thompson could make it. Ryan Thompson could make it. I think Ryan Thompson absolutely could make it. But before we go, before we get there, I want to get my thoughts out on the All-Star Game Cap. Because Jesse, apparently a picture has come out of the All-Star Game Cap. And this is what it looks like. And I don't know if I particularly like it.
Starting point is 00:58:00 Now, I want to start off by saying, I don't hate it. I don't hate the color. Like, I don't hate the colors of this hat. If you're listening on the audio podcasting app, it's a baby blue, kind of light blue and pinkish kind of colors. They tried to do a little bit of a Texas homage with like a star and two lines across the front. I think, I think I'm nitpicking here because I do, I do like this hat. I just feel like last year, right, Seattle went all in. on it being a Seattle hat.
Starting point is 00:58:34 You didn't even have to see the patch on the side to know where the All-Star game was played based on looking at that hat. I am completely fine with leaning into a team's, you know, colors and things like that when the All-Star game is going to be held at that ballpark. When it comes to this hat, I guess I just wanted it to be more of like just a solid red and blue color.
Starting point is 00:58:59 I don't, I'm not, I don't like those color choices much as, like a color combo. And it leads me to believe that that's what the jerseys are going to look like to a degree. Yeah, those jerseys might give me a seizure if they look like that. I'm saying, like it's weird because this looks like an alternate hat for the diamondbacks that I would absolutely pay entirely too much for.
Starting point is 00:59:22 So I am not saying like I don't like the hat. I think I just don't like it as an All-Star game hat. And I mean, Major League Baseball is always trying to find time ways. at times to remind us that this is an American pastime and America and USA and all of that. The Rangers have red, white, and blue colors. The Texas flag is red, white, and blue. They could have just not overthought this and just gone with red, white, and blue. And I think it would have just been fine.
Starting point is 00:59:49 I think that would have been just a little bit better. I think it's really just the shades of the colors that I'm complaining and nitpicking about here. Yeah, you're right. The hats last year were better. Yeah. That's it. That's all. All right.
Starting point is 01:00:05 That's all we got from Jesse Friedman on the hats, folks. I mean, what have I ever had strong opinions on jerseys or hats or anything? I don't know. What does Damon think? That's what I want to know. Yeah, no, that's a fair point. Damon, what are your thoughts on that hat? Pretty mid, right?
Starting point is 01:00:19 I mean, I like the patch. The patch is cool. Yeah, the patch is cool. Yeah, I like the Texas patch. Again, I am all fine. I'm fine with, like, leaning completely into the fact that this is like going to look like the team where the game is played. So I'm fine with that, uh, that, uh, aspect of it. I just think like, I don't know, again, like I even, I have several baby blue and pink. I have baby blue and pink shoes.
Starting point is 01:00:44 Like this is not a color combination that I am opposed to or don't like. I just like again, this leads me to believe that I'm very much not going to like the actual, uh, jerseys. And I have really, really liked the jerseys the last two years. I thought last year in Seattle, they were a little bit weird with the blue and the like the I guess the design that they put on the jersey but it was fine and everything ended up looking nice the year before was in Los Angeles and that was one of the classiest years with just like the gold and I think the silver that they did like I really enjoyed that I almost wanted them to just keep that as kind of the thing they did like I almost wanted them to just make it an annual thing where one team's gold one team silver but maybe people would be mad about that because you're already denoting that one team is lesser than because they're the second place silver team i don't know but anyway i have to ask before we finish what did what do you think of the philly's city connect jerseys that they wore tonight oh they're fucking awful they're atrocious they're really bad i think that the philly's jerseys have been made worse by how many other bad jerseys look like them like the detroit tigers
Starting point is 01:01:51 city connect jersey looks like that we already talked about like you know the twins i think um i i i don't know I mean, I've seen it. I've had Phillies fans send me the flag and all of that. I get it. I know where it came from. It's just, it's weird because all, like, it's like, it's like several ideas they had that came together. And then they were like, hmm, it doesn't look that great together. But, I mean, it's too late.
Starting point is 01:02:19 We're going with this now. Like, I don't like the lettering. I don't like the numbers on the back. There's just so much that I don't like about it. The hat is fine. I thought it was cool that they changed the bell. lights out in the outfield to match their jerseys because usually that's like a red and blue bell or whatever right so there were things about it i mean they're just not good and i mean they're like i feel
Starting point is 01:02:40 like even on the short i did about the los angeles dodgers it made people feel like i was like really angry about the dodgers jerseys no it's just bad it's just not exciting it's mediocre you had a chance to really do something exciting and fun and different and just be wild with it I respect the San Diego Padres for what they did with their City Connect jersey. I'm not a big fan of the Rainbow Sherbert look, but I'll say that the Padres jerseys are better than a lot of the other choices that teams have made out there. And nobody's touching the devil raise, by the way. So don't even think that you're going to make a better City Connect jersey than what the devil
Starting point is 01:03:14 raise did. But yeah, it is what it is. Anyway, a big shout out to AZ Katz G for your super chat. AZ Katz G said thanks to the PHNX staff for an awesome night. at Chickle and Pickle. Me and my wife had a great time. We thank you so much for coming out, man. We had an absolute blast.

And we kick around these ideas like, hey, maybe we do a sports trivia night. And I don't think I ever imagined in my wildest dreams that we would have had as many people as we did show up for our first trivia night and have the time we did.

I mean, it really does because, again, Jesse and I kind of go through this every single day and it's kind of a blur at times and like we just ultimately at the end want to, you know, put on something that you guys enjoy and that
