Kevin, I hope you had a better weekend than the Diamondbacks did.
I think I did, you know, not in all.
I think honestly maybe one of the worst possible imaginable baseball weekends for me personally as a fan.
Yeah, yeah.
Just didn't go great for me this weekend.
Yeah, your Cardinals really got their heads knocked in by the Red Sox last night.
you and I were texting about that.
Of course, welcome in.
Welcome in to you all.
Of course, we appreciate you guys being here.

Happy National Beer Day to you all.
We have good memories from an opening day.
walk off from our one and only
Seth Cervesa that
I hope many of you still have fond memories of
I know I do especially
that woman who kissed me on the street
I'm still thinking about you call me
but of course we all might need
a beer or two Kev to deal with
what happened to the Arizona Diamondbacks
this weekend things did not
go well for the team to say
the least they went into Washington
a team that had only
won one baseball game so far this season
with hopes to get their start
pitching right. Boy did it not. Boy did it not go in that direction for the Diamondbacks.
They lose two out of three to the Nationals. But more importantly, in the first game of the series,
they lost Cattel Marte to hamstring injury, which we still don't know the severity. We might
have an update for that before the end of the show here today. But he's supposed to have
imaging and not good. Not good to have Cotel Marte out. I don't want to start screaming. I told you
so, but I will say that this is the reason why when people question what Tori Lavello was doing
with his lineup, this is why.
It's not to say that you can, you can't stop injuries from happening.
You just can't with baseball, but there is like a ramp up that needs to occur with
position players and with starting pitchers.
I think we've come to very much understand that much more with starting pitchers than we do
with position players.
But sometimes the reason why you want to take it easy is for you to not have to lose a
of this caliber like they did.
According to
Tori Lavolo, through
our guy Steve Zenzmeister,
it sounds like the loss of
Cotel is going to be weeks
and not days, meaning that
the 10-day IL stint
probably won't be the only amount
of time that Cotel Marte
has missed.
Our guy, Espo, is in the chat, and he says
that that shirt is cursed, meaning
the shirt I'm wearing.
Maybe. I mean, I wore it.
I wore it. I wore.
it after the weekend. I didn't wear it during the weekend, Kevin. I mean, does that not?
I don't know. Groundhog mama says resting him didn't help prevent this, though. You're right about that.
That's the, I guess it's more of this injury is more of the reason why we see Tori rest guys as much as he does early on.
And it's hoping that they get back into the groove without having an injury occur like this.
But you can't prevent injuries. You can't stop them from happening. And, uh, he's, you can't,
You could even question managing scared in regards to those injuries.
Even if you do rest him, like you said, Karen, this is not something that's necessarily preventable.
And yes, she also asks who the heck is Gregory Esposito?
And that's weird to me too.
But some positives from the weekend, the Diamondbacks did win the first game.
Corbyn Carroll had a two run, two home run day that day.
So it was great to see Corbyn get his power back.
Unfortunately, it didn't carry over to the rest of the series.
Diamondbacks, as far as home runs were concerned, only hit three.
three home runs in the series.
We're going to get to the numbers here shortly,
but Erod struck out 12 in his start in game two,
but unfortunately Erod was not able to keep runs off the board
and was only able to go five innings pitched and give up four earn runs.
We have the numbers here from the series.
I know you don't want to look at them.
I know we don't want to talk about any of this,
but shout out to our friends at Desert Financial
for always making sure our post-series numbers check out.
Diamondbacks and Nats tie here they both score 13 runs unfortunately the Nationals scored
outscored the Diamondbacks 4 to 3 in game 2 and 5 to 4 in game 3 to win 2 out of 3 in this series
home runs were sparse 3 the Nats had 3 in game 1 diamondbacks had 2 in game 1 both from
1 Corbyn carroll and then only one more home run in the other two games of the series by the
diamondbacks there for three total these teams very look very similar and in
a couple of other aspects here, of course.
Runners in scoring position, the Diamondbacks
were 7 for 25, the Nationals
were 7 for 19, and then taking
a look here back at the starting pitching and the
relief pitching ERA's numbers.
The Diamondback starting pitching
this, I mean,
6.75 for
a three game series of starting pitching
for the Diamondbacks, you could
say that that's fairly inexcusable.
I mean, Brandon fought
Erod,
and Corbin Burns all had
very similar outings when it came to their days.
You had Brandon Fott going six innings, giving up four and runs.
You had Erod going five innings giving up four, and you had Corbyn Burns giving up five
endings, going five innings, giving up four innings, four earn runs, excuse me.
Hey, Mark, great to see in the chat.
The journey says, I am not someone that loves to be negative, but I'm getting tired of giving
Cy Young Calibur guys large contracts just for them to fall apart.
The second, our logo is on their chest.
And yes, I will say that from the perspective of starting pitching, things are not only a disaster right now, but historically for this team, they've been a disaster.
It's understandable for people to overreact to Corbyn's outing.
It's understandable for people to overreact to EROD after signing the deal that he did last year.
Right now, EROD has a 6.10 ERA this season.
Brandon Fott has a 5.25 ERA, and Corbyn Bairns has a 5.5.3.
and Corbyn Burns has a 5.79 ERA.
The team ERA two times through the rotation right now is 5.96.
That's worse than last year when we were bottom five in Major League Baseball.
And of course, again, Corbin Burns is a bigger concern, concern for a lot of people.
We sign a guy like him.
We bring him over.
His first outing, the numbers didn't look great.
But again, at least a performance still seem to be there.
This performance much more discouraging.
Let's take a look at his pitch chart here.
One thing you'll notice is his cutter really was all over the place.
I don't think typically what you see from a Corbyn Burns outing on a pitch chart like this is everything low in the zone, down there, outside of the zone, off of the corners, off the edges, but lower in the zone.
There are a lot of middle, middle up pitches here.
the didn't seem like he had great control over his cutter which is his bread and butter pitch he was only able to generate eight whiffs total on his pitches five on his cutter i think he threw a change up a canful of times and was able to generate a whiff on that but just not a good day for him and you could tell that he was missing considerably outside of the zone he wasn't really fooling many batters he ends up going five innings giving up six seven hits excuse me four and runs he walked four and only
struck out three currently has like I said earlier a 5.79 era. I don't know what what happens
in regards to the journey's question and I think that that is something a lot of Diamondbacks
fans are feeling why does this happen to us why can't we have nice things when it comes to
starting pitching you could you know again Zach Granke probably an outlier over the last
you know, 10 years going back even further.
But Madison, bumgardner, Shelby Miller, which wasn't a, you know, free agent, you know,
as a trade, but still the acquisition of a starting pitcher.
It feels like, you know, you have this situation with Jordan Montgomery, obviously,
that there's no way at this point for it to ever look like a positive after what he has gone
through and what he's going to go through with the surgery.
So I don't have an answer for you.
And again, Diamondbacks fans are right to be frustrated.
with this situation of going out and acquiring someone of Corbin-Burn's stature, his caliber,
and having him perform the way he has so far in the first two games of the season.
It's a limited sample size, and I do think that there is, you know, again, good pitchers find a way to bounce back,
and I'm sure Corbyn's will.
I really don't have, I have more concern, obviously, about the start against the nationals
than I did against the Yankees because there were things you could point to that were a bit outside of his control
that led to that being less successful than anybody would want out of a Corbyn-Burn's outing.
However, I think that I figured out the core problem here, Kevin.
And I really think that essentially this is the price we pay for the Diamondbacks still having signed Randy Johnson to a four-year $52 million deal before his 1999 season, which I know many of you probably weren't even born at that period of time.
but it's still widely considered one of the best free agents starting pitching deals ever signed in Major League Baseball.
So maybe that's it.
Maybe the curse of Randy Johnson still hangs over us.
I don't really have an answer for you.
But again, the Diamondbacks lose that series to the Nationals, two games out of three.
And it's just there's no way to not be disappointed by it.
So there's no reason to suggest otherwise.
It's a team that, again, coming off of the series win over the Yankees,
you had to feel pretty good about this Diamondbacks team
and where they stood even if they lost that finale.
That game, you could point to Merrill Kelly having a really bad outing
and costing, you know, the Diamondbacks enough runs,
a big enough deficit that they couldn't get out of it.
However, you know, the consistency with how bad the starting pitching has been so far
is mind-boggling.
And it's a stark contrast to what some of the relief pitchers are doing.
Meanwhile, not everybody in the bullpen has been great, but the combo of Shelby Miller, Jalen Beaks, and Justin Martinez has been outstanding for this team so far this season.
So the bullpen hasn't really been the problem, and they weren't in this series.
The Diamondbacks bullpen gave up one earned run and nine innings pitched in the series against the Nationals.
Meanwhile, the Nationals bullpen had a 3.270 RA.
Maybe that's something you can point to is the Diamondbacks didn't really wreck the Nationals Bullpen the way that they've been attacking other teams.
team's bullpens, but it's still
concerning that the Diamondbacks weren't able
up to muster up even a
good outing here against the
Nationals. I'm not going to knock the Nationals.
They're still a professional baseball team. It's just
again, you tend
to want to see, you should see
a team like the Diamondbacks who are expected to be a
better team in baseball, be able to go
into Washington and
handle this Nationals team better
than they did. But again, kudos
to them for showing
out. And honestly, I don't
really know what the answer is going to be here with the starting pitching. There was a period of
time where obviously a lot of people pointed to the, you know, to the pitching coach and Brent
Strom and thought that maybe a change there was needed. This is no knock to Brian Kaplan because he has
not been here long enough for this to really be, you know, him having a huge impact on these
pitchers. But, you know, again, it's just one of those things that with the additional
Corbyn Burns, with the change of a pitching coach, you really wanted to see just more
out of this starting rotation than what we saw last year.
Unfortunately, up to this point, not only has been more of the same,
but it's been worse than it was last year.
So right now they're not giving this team a competitive chance to win
and comebacks seem to be the only way that the diamondbacks can hang in these games so far.
Starting pitching, they need to step up.
But again, some other guys are going to need to step up as well.
In the absence of Cotel Marte, we find out in game one of this series on what looked like a triple.
Cetell Marte ends up injuring his hamstring and has been placed on the 10-day IL for that hamstring injury.
And we're going to talk about that more on the other side of this break.
So don't you guys go anywhere?

And of course, just go out there and
have yourself a great time. You don't even need a draft day
party to have a good time out at
Wild Horse Pass.
And again, we might need
a good time. It might need something to
bring us happiness now that the Diamondbacks
of loss could tell Martite injury.
Hopefully it's a short stint. We are
still waiting to hear today some news
about the grade of the strain
and how long, how much
time could tell Marte is going to be missing but unfortunately again from our guy Steve Zinsmeister
he talked to Tori Lavello and it sounded like it's going to be weeks versus days which was what was
was the comment made by Tori and again this happened in the just the second at bat of Friday's
games for Friday's game versus the nationals Marte hit what looked like was going to be a triple for
him it looked like he was off to the races and then instead after hitting this ball to the outfield he
pulls up lane as he rounded first base and settles for a double.
This was just two years removed from signing a six-year extension with the club.
Marte was set to travel back to Arizona after Sunday's game to have imaging done
and have testing to determine the grade of his strain and a treatment plan.
But this is unfortunate for the Arizona Diamondbacks, obviously.
Cotel Marte's production, his leadership, everything about him is going to be missed by this team.
unfortunately though right now the diamond backs don't really have many guys stepping up i mean you you had
corbin go yard twice in friday's game that felt like a big moment for him to take a step forward but
the diamond backs offensively are very very much in a slump jake mccarthy still hasn't
recorded a hit this season uh gino swarres and lordis gruel right now uh they were combined one for
19 in this series. No RBI, two walks, and six strikeouts. In fact, Suarez right now is in the middle
of a pretty significant slump. He's two for 24 with 10 strikeouts. So not to mention the fact
that Gino this season has pretty much been feast or famine. He has one thing. He still has
one double outside of the home runs and those are his only hits. So you're not really seeing
much consistency at the plate there by Gino. And yeah, ground.
Dog Mama, she's right. She did say Jose Herrera, while I was in the midst of talking about him starting entirely too much, hit a home run. So sometimes they even shut me up. What can I say? But I mean, the Diamondbacks need more from this team. They need more offensively. I could say it over and over again, you look sometimes at what the Diamondbacks are able to do offensively. And again, this series against the Nationals, they kind of made their starters look pretty good. Diamondbacks, you know, muster up six runs.
runs, three runs, and four runs, as far as earned runs against national starters, only one earned run in Saturday's games.
So nine-and-backs have not been putting up much offensively, and unfortunately, their starting pitching, really is put them in a position to not win, right?
This could tell Marte injury is significant.
The only thing that you can hope here is that, you know, it's not a very lengthy delay.
he's not out for a very long time because you can just kind of feel right now the the air being let out of the Diamondbacks balloon, right?
There's there's probably a lot of frustration in that clubhouse.
Alec Thomas, he's been performing fairly well.
So I expect to see him get some more playing time here.
Again, there's a few guys that have been performing fairly decently.
But unfortunately right now for the Diamondbacks, their offense didn't have a great weekend.
And they're starting pitching really made it hard for them to even be in these games.
games. So not great, not great, but it's still early in the season. We're going to talk here
a little bit about panicking and when we should panic and maybe now isn't the time to panic,
but I will also say that I wouldn't blame you to panic and that the time for panic might be
around the corner, even though there's still a lot of baseball to be played. But Diamondbacks
need something positive. They start their three game series tonight against the Baltimore Orioles.
So we will bring you not a post game tonight, but we'll be.
bringing a post game show tomorrow after Tuesday's game. I think guy Damon's going to be joining us for
that. But one thing I do wonder is, you know, again, you see a guy like Cattel Marte, sign a contract
extension, not a huge contract extension, not gigantic, but it does kind of make you realize
real quickly how much injuries can impact that. Crazy it would be to sign a guy to a $500 million
$14 year contract extension. But that's exactly what the Toronto believes.
Lou Jays did, locking in
our guy Vlad for a 14-year
deal that will see him earn $500
million with no deferrals
and no opt-outs
at all. Additionally, he
also gains a no
trade clause in there.
Like, we were thrilled about the Marte
extension, right, Kevin? But I mean,
honestly, when I see a deal
like this,
I almost
turn to dust seeing it, right?
Like, I just, I am in disbelief.
and, you know, maybe, maybe Major League, if there's any, if there's a sport that deserves it,
it's Major League Baseball players, right?
Considering the road you have to go through, considering everything that a baseball player
has to kind of deal with before they can make a payday anywhere close to this, there's a lot.
There's a lot there to deal with, right?
But I will say, I don't ever think that any athlete should be signed to a half a billion dollar contract for 4,000.
14 years. It's just it's just a wild notion to me. And again, maybe there's one or two guys in
every sport in a league like this that was that are worth it. But yeah, Sean's right here in the
chat. Sean says Toronto was sick of missing out on the other big, big names every year. And not to
mention that, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had made it very clear that he was not going to sign,
resign with, with the Blue Jays that he was going to go into free agency. So the deal did have to be
significant. I just wonder how much damage have the Blue Jays done to their organization as a whole by
signing a single player to a contract of this magnitude. I don't know if the Diamondbacks could really
rebound from it if it didn't work out or if that player's performance or their production
dropped off significantly after the next four years or so. Can I interest you in Madison
Bumgarner for 14 years at half a billion dollars? I don't know. Please don't know. That's what I'm
saying like if you're a diamond backs fan like unless it's like a generational time i'm not saying
gladysmer grower junior isn't generational but what i'm saying is that like arguable if if if if he was a
diamond back though you would be you would get the same PTSD you're getting with picture signings
but with it with a certain you know extension if you know what i mean yeah for sure and i and i get it
i mean but it's just like i i don't know i i don't even know if a player like again if you're an
organization like the dodgers and you can figure out a way to you know
to make it work, especially with deferring as much as the Dodgers were able to defer.
There's a big thing to be said about today's money being worth far less than, or I don't know,
tomorrow's money is much different than today's money, right?
So again, 10 years down the line, that amount of money, that pile of money might not look
nearly as bad as it does today.
Blue Jays are doing this with no deferrals.
The Dodgers and other teams are doing it with deferrals.
and I don't know
I just I can't imagine a player
really having that big of an impact
to really think that they were worth that much money right
so I don't know when you look at you know
Vladimir Guerrero's years he's he's had great seasons
I mean last year he put up an incredible 6.2 war
and has done that he had another season in 2021
where he put up 6.5 war
so like there's
there's something to be said about his performance
and his consistency.
Last year he slashed 323, 396, 544 with a 940 OPS.
I would love to have a guy that put up those numbers.
The problem there is that the difference between 2024 for the Blue Jays and other seasons
is the team that they have around Vlad.
And that's as important as it is to have that one superstar player that you're able to sign to a huge contract.
I don't know if the Diamondbacks have the resources to ever commit that much to one single guy
without it impacting the organization and the other moves they could make.
You know, Corbyn Burns was an unexpected signing that the Diamondbacks really weren't pursuing
but kind of fell in their lap due to Burns' desire to come here and be a member of this organization.
After all of a sudden done, this contract is structured in a very reasonable way where you feel like Burns is getting compensated fairly.
However, you know, the Diamondbacks really didn't mortgage their future a ton here on this Corbin Burns deal.
It should help significantly, you know, kind of bridge the game.
gap to the next kind of starting rotation should guys like Merrill Kelly and Zach Gallen leave
after this season. I just, again, I just don't know if any guy outside of a guy named
Otani is really worth, you know, half a billion dollars or more.
Question though for you, Derek. If you are a team like the Blue Jays or a team like the,
let's take it from a dime back's perspective. Sure. Let's say maybe your franchise's
greatest talent is up for an extension. What would you maybe just give them a blank check?
to keep the talent from going to the Dodgers of the Yankees
because the Yankees are in your own division.
And if Vlad is on an open market,
guess what the Yankees need a first basement.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I mean,
that's a great question.
It's,
it's,
you're always at danger of teams of players wanting to leave
for organizations like that.
Because not only do they have that prestige,
once again,
that little extra factor of being like maybe that organization
that that guy has always wanted to play for since they were a little kid,
but they also have the money and the resource.
in order to compensate that player better than most teams can, right?
So that's where it starts to become so unfair for these teams with not only the history,
but the money to be able to do this when you're talking about it being, you know,
competitive, they're being competitive balance in baseball.
What I will say is that deals like this render some teams a little helpless, right?
A little, you know, a few organizations.
It hamstrings you.
Right.
And so, like, there's something to be said about smaller market teams that
can't afford contracts like this because they don't pay them out.
And then they have a chance to make moves and to maneuver minor league players,
call guys up, make trades, do things like that that you're not able to do with a contract like Guerrero's.
And, you know, that allows you to find younger, cheaper talent that you can get for a period of time.
And then once they become really good and worth the money, then they can go sign somewhere else.
It's almost the Tampa Bay Race formula of success.
The Diamondbacks here, as we've talked,
about have kind of been following a bit more of a, I guess,
Atlanta Braves formula of trying to lock their young players in to contract extensions,
build the core for the future,
and continue to be able to have some wiggle room with spending to be able to add free agents
like a Corbyn Burns or, you know,
an Eduardo Rodriguez to this team and make this team better.
It's just, again, right now what we're seeing,
especially with the starting rotation for the Diamondbacks,
is that those signings aren't working out.
and honestly, maybe we're just doomed to never have stuff like this workout for us.
I don't know.
I don't want to be too doom and gloom about it.
But it is frustrating, again, for the Diamondbacks to be able to go out and get somebody like Corbyn
Burns and unfortunately see him through two games, have, you know, a 5.79.
I want this to turn around.
I think that's what we all want to see, right?
And again, there's a lot of things you could discuss with the position players and
the lack of performance there from guys like Gino and Lordus.
However, it really all goes through starting pitching.
And if the starting pitching can get things figured out,
the Diamondbacks would be in a better position.
They would probably have a chance to win a lot more games
if the Diamondbacks starting pitchers currently didn't have a nearly six ERA.
So I need to move on, though, to something more fun in life that brings me more joy.
So you know what day it is around here.
And you know what we do on this day.

Derek.
piece of Yoshi is in the chat saying referencing the replacement of the Roberto
Roberto Clemente signs for a sponsorship and I wanted to know A have you seen that and two
or I guess B what are your thoughts on that they replaced their they had on the outfield wall
there was a Roberto Clemente like fathead kind of sign you know honoring his contributions
to the franchise this season are we talking about the pirates soon yes this season it has been
removed in lieu of a sponsorship for the out for the outfield wall i mean we shouldn't ever be surprised
by this should we no the the almighty dollar still always uh surpasses all but i don't know man i mean again
there's they they do a great job of honoring roberto clemente's legacy in pittsburgh so i'm
not going to act like not having one more picture of him up on the wall you know hurts right however
uh he is i mean this is something we're going through
right now with trying to like erase history and it's just so odd that we don't want to honor these
people that helped shape the game help shape our country make things the way they are so yeah it's
tell you it's it's true what they say if you don't learn from your history you're doomed to repeat it
so uh there are things in regards to this that we got to make sure that we always honor and we always
cherish right like uh the the i don't know it's it's like what i said about visiting baseball parks
that have more history than Chase Field.
There's something significant about that history, about those contributions,
visiting a place like Wrigley Field, or even like I said,
the way that they brought things over from, you know, the ballpark at Arlington,
the Globe Life Field to make sure that that history of the Texas Rangers was preserved
in a new building.
It means a lot.
And I think it's a significant part, especially of the game of baseball.
This is a, it's like I said, it's a game that's been around for 700 years.
So we have to preserve the history as much as possible.
I think in the end it's always tacky when you want to remove something like that
that honors someone in order to put something up that makes you money.
And it's never going to be perceived as anything but tacky.
I do think that you make a decision when you do something like that.
You know the public outcry, you know the response is not going to be good,
but sometimes with things like this, people have a short memory.
Yeah.
And also, for whatever it's worth, he did.
I mean, I guess I didn't verify if it was really his Twitter or not,
but it did look like his real Twitter.
And Roberto Clemente tweeted, quote, tweeted a photo of it being removed by saying, like, I didn't know about this.
Almost kind of like saying like, I'm upset by this.
I can't believe.
Did you say the Roberto Clemente?
Yeah.
It hasn't been dead for a long time.
I'm saying like a representative was my point.
That's why I was like, I don't know if it was a real account that represents like the family's interest or whatnot.
But yeah, the representatives were not too pleased with that.
Yeah.
Let me tell you, don't, don't, I'm going to be when you guys take down that mayor picture that's up in my fake office and the other.
they're sweet. I'm going to haunt you for years. This is what I'm going to do, basically.
But again, we need, yeah, see, look it. They already took it down. I'm done. I'm done.
I told you you're going to remove my history. She's not doing the show anymore. That's what I'm done.
This is what we do. Kevin, it's your show now. What up, chat?
Anyway, I can't leave. It's Monday. You know what we do on Monday. I need to be here for this because
every Monday is special. The rest of the time, it's still special. It's just not as special as Monday.
year is the year of the snake on this show. You know that. Every year is our year. Every month on
this show is Black History Month. Every month on this show is Women's History Month. And every month
on this show is Black Women's History Month. Every single week is Shark Week. Every single
day is Earth Day. But Kevin, on Mondays, what do we do?
Ryan says Max wants to picture down for the next sponsor spot. That's probably the truest thing
that anybody has ever written in this chat.
It's definitely true.
All right, Kev, what are we got in the mailbox today?
Mailbag, mailbag, I know Rance is mailbox, but it's mailbag.
First up, the basketball and football guy wants to know at what point should we get worried
on guys like Erod, Burns, and McCarthy?
What is today?
Monday, April 7, 2025?
Correct.
Yeah, today's a good time.
Now, no, I mean, again, I've tried to always say with.
baseball you have to have a bigger sample size you also have to give guys chance to find a groove right i mean
you're you want to panic and i understand panicking i think that a lot of people uh are rightfully
frustrated and again the expectations for this team were high right um but it's also it's also
just a few weeks into the baseball season uh i've i've said that i would give things until the middle of may
before I really started panicking.
So I think that that would probably be an appropriate time frame for some of these guys.
Again, it's still encouraging to see Riyadh go out there and strike out 12.
It's just not encouraging for him to have another outing with four earn runs.
Right.
So there's some things here that this team is still working out.
There are still some growing pains in regards to having a new starting rotation come together,
having a bullpen come together and having a new pitching coach overseeing all of that it's it's just
you know a fact of the matter sometimes things come together better and quicker than they have for the
diamondbacks but unfortunately i think it's still growing pains of some new additions and and again a
new pitching coach hopefully we see them you know figure this out a third time through the rotation
because so far the first two only have really two good outings you can think of out of the top of your head and
And one of those was from Merrill Kelly and the other one was an outstanding one from Zach Gallen.
And everything else has been mediocre to bad outside of that.
So don't panic yet, but panic soon if that makes sense.
All right.
What else we got, Kev?
Next up, JJ wants to know how much more time would Jake McCarthy have to turn things around before he gets sent down?
Who would you call up in his place from Reno?
I think this goes right along with the not panicking thing.
I am not ready to give up on anyone yet.
I don't think that the organization or Tori Lavello, Mike Hazen, are ready to give up on anyone yet.
However, with that said, Jake McCarthy is still hitless last time I checked.
And I don't know how long you can give him.
I mean, I would honestly say maybe two to three weeks, and that's without seeing any further production or improvement.
So, I mean, there's still time.
I would say that it wouldn't surprise me to see Alec Thomas already starting to win more playing time over Jake McCarthy.
but again, Jake, once Jake gets back right, he's going to be productive.
He's going to be a big member of this offense.
So again, it's just a matter of how to get him going.
Maybe sending him down to Reno wouldn't be the worst thing, considering that offensively,
guys seem to get right in Reno.
And we all know why it's a very hitter-friendly atmosphere and maybe just going down,
having some success and believing in himself again could provide Jake with a boost that
then sees him get called back up to the major league roster, though.
However, in regards to your other question,
I honestly would probably call up,
based on what we've seen so far,
another backup infielder over maybe, you know,
another outfielder if Jake was to be sent down.
I don't know if I am ready necessarily to continue to carry five outfielders
when Cotel Marte has now been lost to injury,
and we've already seen some roster problems with not having
enough infielders and carrying too many outfielders so far this season. So
Il-Demarro Vargas immediately comes to mind considering he had himself a pretty good spring and
felt like he was fairly close to winning that job over Garrett-Hamson. But another guy, if you
were to call up an outfielder, would be maybe Jorge Barrosa. He's currently on the 40-man roster,
which that I think gives him an advantage to get called up right now over Vargas, who is not on the
40-man roster. But his numbers aren't great. He can bring the chaos. I mean, he's a speedy
guy, but in 40 at bats, he's hitting 250 with a 302 on base percentage and a 702 OPS.
So I don't know if if Barrosa necessarily would be the answer.
And again, that's in Reno.
So you tend to see guys have a bit stronger numbers offensively in Reno than, you know, than this.
But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the Diamondbacks do pursue that route just to kind of find some way to generate some additional offense, you know.
Peace, Viochi says, Loller definitely.
it's not going to be Laller.
They're like there.
I mean,
this is the same reaction because when Ketelmarte went down,
Tim Tawa got called up.
There was a wonderful video on the Diamondback Social,
showing him get the call.
But the reason for that is because once again,
this position is going to be seen as a time share position.
And they don't really want Jordan Lawler only playing some of the time.
They want Jordan Lawler playing all of the time.
So they're going to continue to leave him in Reno
until they're ready to give them regular at bats.
and that's probably how it's going to be.
And Candace says, and he's a switch hitter, I'm guessing you mean in regards to Barrosa.
Yeah, so again, there's some good youngsters.
I know Chris has a question in regards to that as well here coming up,
but we'll get to that here shortly.
What else we got, Kevin?
Next up, Karen with a C or Karen with air conditioning wants to know
who has the most disadvantages or advantages a pitcher or position player
when they have to play against their former team?
I like Karen with AC
That's actually that sounds
It's about that time of here Derek
It's about that time but yeah
I think in regards to that it's probably
The bigger disadvantage goes to the pitcher
I think that the only thing there is
Is that neither one of these guys really
Play against each other often
Like there's some backfield games and some other times
But it almost feels like
I don't know if the pitchers are watching the position
players bat as much as the position players are watching the pitcher pitch considering they're
out there for it right so uh i i think that uh the the the he said pitcher player position player
definitely he says yoshi in regards to what specified do you mean like who has the bigger
disadvantage uh or advantage i think again i think the pitcher has the bigger disadvantage just to
the to the team knowing uh maybe some of their weaknesses maybe some of the things that while they were on
team. He says pitchers watch everything. I doubt that. I don't believe that very much. Maybe they
do, but I don't know if I've often seen starting pitchers up on the bump watching their,
you know, especially when they're in the middle of a game of an outing, watching the position
players hit as much as the position players. But I will say position players out there in the
field, so they're kind of busy playing baseball versus watching their own pitchers pitch. So I don't know.
It's a great question.
I would probably lean towards pitchers still having that disadvantage there.
Do you think it matters if it's a starter versus a bullpen guy?
It's a good question.
I feel like starters, obviously you're going to see starters more often,
but the frequency of relief pitching is also there as well.
I don't know.
I think that maybe you might,
it's a lot of information to retain, right?
As a position player,
you're expecting me to like play with Zach Gallen for two seasons.
and then remember what I saw and then somehow put that into play against him.
I mean, it's almost probably more information that you're picking up being in the clubhouse
and being around, you know, them than you are seeing it.
You know, you're hearing what Zach Allen might have as a weakness or you're hearing something
that was working against him rather than it being you seeing it visually and maybe retain it
a bit more for starting pitchers that are a bit more memorable, maybe a bit more formidable
that you would, you know, face again in the future.
It's a lot to ask position players to remember everything they've ever heard about every
pitcher that they've played with.
So I don't know.
That's again why maybe, I don't know, maybe a piece of Yoshi's right.
Maybe the pitchers might have a bit of more of an advantage there.
All right.
What else do we got?
Next up, Rick D wants to know.
Any update on Marte's injury?
Grade one, two, or three.
As it stands right now, we have not received that information.
But I have a feeling it's going to come out in probably about 20.
20 minutes because Tori LeVallo's media availability will be right after we start this show.
So we should get an update in regards to Marte's injury.
But again, I wouldn't be surprised no matter the grade of the injury for the Diamondbacks to be overly cautious with Cattel.
And I know that just based on Tori's personal mantra of guys getting injured, he is most likely not going to do anything to rush Cattel's recovery or getting him back into the lineup.
So it seems very likely like the Diamondbacks are going to be without Cotel Marte for a little while.
And hopefully we'll have a better idea this afternoon on exactly how long that that period of time is going to be.
What else we got, Kevin?
Next up, Chris, shout out to you for visiting us this morning.
Yes.
Are there any players in Reno or Amarillo that you'd like to see start working on additional defensive positions to bolster depth on our current roster,
parentheses and projections for the next few seasons and parentheses question mark?
Well, I mean, again, there's the idea here that Jordan Lawler, who is listed as a shortstop,
should already be playing the majority of his time at third base, right?
Like, Geraldo Perdomo signing his contract extension with this team almost all but guarantees
that Jordan Lawler will not be able to play that position here in the near future, right?
So that's something I'm sure if people want to see him get playing time,
that that is somebody that, you know, the Diamondbacks have to figure out where exists.
exactly he's going to play.
Another guy is Slade Caldwell.
I know that he and his Mighty Mouse physique have been very exciting.
He's the Diamondbacks third overall prospects.
So he's a guy to definitely keep on your radar.
A lot of people, Thomas Jury says the people want ADC.
And yeah, I mean, ADC rounds out the Diamondbacks top five prospects.
And he is a guy that was very exciting, very electric when he came up and joined this team.
I think, though, that in regards to, you know, what they want from him is they do want him to continue as a catcher.
And, you know, the Diamondbacks plan with Gabbyle Moreno and ADC, that could be, you know, obviously impact his playing time.
There might be some additional, you know, starts and at bats that they want to see out of him versus him being a backup at a major league level similar to what's going on with Jordan Lawler.
But I'm still very high on Ryan Walshman.
I think he's a guy that's going to be a big,
big star for this team.
I think he's going to be incredibly good.
And then another guy that I've heard a ton about has been Hansa Luis.
So dimebacks have some great guys.
I mean, it was great to see Lou James, Gino Groover,
get some at-bats in Las Vegas,
and he looked really good as well.
But in regards to the second part of her question,
I think she said something about like getting guys to play different positions.
And yeah, I mean, that's what it's starting to become is where, especially with all these contract extensions that are taking place, where will these guys play and what is the time table for them?
As great as it is for the player that signs that contract extension and the franchise and us as fans, it has to feel frustrating.
You know, when you're a guy in the minor league system and you see a player that plays the same position as you at the major league level get a long-term contract.
extension. It does have to probably start making you question where do you fit in with this
organization's plans in the future and how are you going to end up getting at bats?
And unfortunately, you know, again, with this situation with like Jordan Lawler, the Diamondbacks
are going to prefer him to get every day at bats and continue playing at a AAA level rather than
having him come up. And if he can't come up and impress at a major league level, then how does he win
playing time? It's a, it's a frustrating experience, I'm sure, for a lot of.
a lot of these young guys in the minor league system,
but the Diamondbacks are going to continue to build from that system.
They're going to continue to build this team, this organization,
through these young players.
So they'll get a chance.
It's just a matter of how ready are they when that chance comes.
And like Chris said,
sometimes what you have to do is find other positions and other places for you to play
so that that way when that opportunity pops up, you're ready to go.
We've already seen a number of injuries this season and opportunities be given to guys,
especially in the bullpen.
And so far,
Jaylen Beaks and Shelby Miller
have been tremendously successful
with the opportunities given.
So, but even that, right?
Even those guys, both of those guys were guys that were not on this team.
So they further block opportunities from younger players.
And when they're playing well,
it makes it even harder for those guys that are in the minor league system
to get those opportunities.
But we will have some more mailbag Monday questions for you guys
on the other side of this break.
including multiple wrestling questions.
So I know that's what you guys stuck around for.
And if you did, you're in luck because we have some good stuff.
But we'll be talking about that on the other side of this break.
Don't you go anywhere?
You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show.
Well, we have Sanderson Ford, of course, who we absolutely love.
And they have some big news from the President of America's most awarded for dealership.
David Kimmerle, Ford just announced from America for America employee pricing.
Now you pay what he pays on the full lineup,
on new Ford's with no hassle, no pressure, no nonsense, and no added markup.
So if you are in the market for a new vehicle, now is the best time possibly ever to go check
out what Sanderson Ford has going on. Employee pricing levels, employee pricing levels of
playing field for Ford dealers. Everyone gets the same percent price. However, other dealers
will still add add addums and add-ons. Sanderson Ford will not. You can trust them. And of course,
now is the best time to buy a new Ford with Ford from America for America employee pricing
excludes 2025 Expedition, 2025 Super Duty, Raptors, Mustang, and Bronco specialty vehicles.
Get out there. Go get yourself a new vehicle. Have yourself an amazing lunch.
Also, if you are thinking about selling your home, you need to get to know Carol Royce and her team,
the way that we have gotten to know Carol Royce and her team. Since the beginning of this year,
there have been over 4,000 home sales canceled.
What does that mean?
It means the realtor involved.
They chose to sell their home.
A person that they got to do the job failed to do so.
In today's market, you need to work with an agent who will price your home right.
If not, your home will sit and not sell, especially with how competitive the market is right now.
So do not wait.
Call Carol and her team.
They have been serving the Valley for over three decades.
And there are three generations of family members on her team.
and Carol will guarantee to sell your home for 100% of market value or she'll pay you the difference.
Who else is going to give you an offer like that?
If you're considering a cash offer, don't settle for one.
Get up to six of the best offers with at least one at 100% of market value.
Or again, Carol will pay you the difference.
Call Carol Royce today at 480776-5231 or visit Carol Online, Carolroysteam.com.
And tell them the good people at PHNX sent you.
That's Carolroystteam.com.
Terms and conditions apply.
Mark wants to know can Carol Royce play second?
Not only would Carol Royce play second, but she would she would bat in all 162 games.
The woman is tenacious.
Energy unmatched.
Her energy is literally unmatched.
She's not wrong.
He's not wrong about that.
You want someone like Carol Royce on your team for sure.
Carol Royce would end up playing Dominoes with the boys probably after the games.
Far faster than I ever would.
She would be accepted and brought in to the fraternity.
of Hispanic baseball players
far faster than I ever would. But
make sure to check out Caroleers. Get yourself
a house. That's an important thing. It's not
easy, but I'll tell you it's the best thing I've ever done.
The other best thing I ever did
was starting mailbag Monday. So what else
we got, Kevin? We got some more questions in the bag.
Yeah, we actually have an impromptu
mailbag from Tony here in the chat
who is bringing up the viral
photo of a Yankee fan who was
wearing a Paul Steen's jersey
to the game. Derek, have you
seen this? I saw it. You also
sent me that's that's wild to do to the young man that's wild to do to the entire pirates organization
right i mean as if as if you needed to do that to him i also think we saw during one of the yankees
games uh the diamondbacks played against them a guy dressed in a met's jersey with a philly's hat on
and i've never seen somebody that was more lost in life than that uh gentleman but uh no i i think
you also sent me some very funny uh maybe paul skeins maybe it was bootleg merch
from the parking lot.
Yeah, I don't think that was officially licensed.
Paul Effing Skeens, I still, I want one of those hoodies.
So if someone in Pittsburgh could find that guy with those hoodies, give me a call.
No art, just text.
Yeah, yeah.
It was art.
It was art.
But what else we got in the mailbag there, Kevin?
Next in the mailbag, Michael Rokickey wants to know which D-back would you want as your wise man.
Oh, this is, okay, this is our first wrestling-related question.
For those of you that don't know, Roman Raines is our tribal chief.
he's your tribal chief and he has a wise man named Paul Heyman.
That might be a name you recognized from a very long time ago.
Or you might have no idea what I'm talking about and that's fine.
But the wise man in this case would be a trusted advisor, a pro wrestling manager, if you will,
someone similar to myself who can make things happen for his clients.
And again, if there's any pro wrestlers out there in need of representation,
my Twitter handle is at cap underscore caveman with a K.
And if you're wondering, Ocean Avery just got a main event match over in German.
because of me. So I'm a pretty good manager. But moving on, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Moving on to this in regards to wise men, are we talking wise man from the Diamondbacks like
40 man roster? Or are we talking about from the organization? Because from an organizational
standpoint, there is nobody I would want as my wise man more than Mike Kazen.
Bang! My Kazen. My cousin is the wise man. I've said time and time again, I would let Mike
in general manage my life. And I mean all decisions. Like I wouldn't argue with him. He would just tell
me what to do and simply based on his advice, I would do said things. Contract extensions, it doesn't
matter. Trades, moves, whatever he had to say in regards to like what sandwich I ate, what condiments
I put on it, you know, which outdoor festivals I spend my time at, all of these things would all
be up to my Kaysen. Because honestly, no player is older and fatter than me on the team, right? So I have a hard time,
being one of the Diamondbacks physically fit baseball players as my wise man here, Kevin.
No, no disrespect to the great Paul Heyman and all.
What are you really saying about Mike Hazen?
Yeah, no, I'm just saying, no.
Don't put me in that position.
Also not older or fatter than me.
I will say Ryan Thompson is probably an easy guess.
That's just because Ryan Thompson would give me good advice.
He wants me to feud with another podcast with my former co-host.
And I think it's good for ratings, frankly.
He knows what he's talking about.
Randall Gritchick also comes to mind for me because he just seems wise beyond his years to me.
Yeah, I mean, you stole my answer with Mike Hayes.
And I think there's no other like 1A draft pick in this draft than Mike Hayes.
And I think if you're going from an organizational standpoint.
Yeah.
Because what you did what you kind of left out alluded to it a little bit was he's, you need your wise man to be a good decision maker.
Yeah.
But you also need a wise man with some fire.
That's true.
He was not afraid to stick up for you when need be.
That's true.
And Mike Hazen would do all of that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, he absolutely would.
He would, he would be like, uh, no disrespect, but this is Derek Monterey you're talking
about here.
Uh, Ernesto says, I'd go with Jeff Bannister.
That's such a great answer to Jeff Bannister.
Jeff Bannister is Tori Lavello's wise band already to a certain degree.
So, uh, Tori doesn't do anything without checking in with Jeff.
So that's probably a great answer as well.
Uh, what else we got there, Kev?
We have a super chat from, oh, let's get that.
What we got?
Thank you for your.
$10 super chat. Mark says, what do you think about the idea that the debacks ramping up their
starters slowly compared to other teams in spring training affected their command early this season.
Jack Summers has brought this up.
I know Jack Summers is a very smart man, but yeah, I mean, definitely the idea could be
that maybe some of these struggles, maybe some of these problems are the Diamondbacks being too cautious.
I think part of the problem was spring training was really condensed.
It was really fast.
There were some mistakes made.
We talked about the Corbin Burns.
timing his schedule, his routine, and how Tori without putting him on opening day,
kind of botched that.
So that could be to blame.
It just feels like, again, this goes back to the Jordan Montgomery thing from last year,
of blaming, you know, his weird spring training and not really having a great start to his season.
Or a great, great start to, you know, getting ready for the season, I should say,
caused, you know, him to have the lack of success he had.
If you go back to Jordan Montgomery's first two starts for the Diamondbacks last year,
they were actually pretty good.
It was after that B game that things fell apart for him.
And again, maybe a delay on, you know, when they start really can cause the wheels to fall off or a starting pitcher.
I just hope that maybe Burns is the opposite of that.
Maybe Burns struggles here a bit in his first two starts, but then can get things back on track as we all hope that he can.
Michael Rokickey says, I was not expecting my mailbag to turn into calling Elise slash Mike Azen old.
Thank you for your super chat.
and you're going to have to take that up with lease.
I don't know if I
I don't know if I could, I don't want to get involved
with that.
The GM is not someone you should be, you know,
gaining the hire of.
God.
She's definitely not going to help me make any trades.
What else we got, Kevin?
We got to get out of here soon,
but we got another question.
You know what?
I'm going to do this.
We're going to do this.
We're going to tell everybody.
We love you if you're watching on the TV side.
Jacob will appreciate me telling you
that we are going to still keep this thing rolling
over at Go, PHN.
So of course, if you're watching on Zumo or one of your favorite apps, TVs, we love you,
appreciate you doing so.
Come join us at go phtonx.com.
We got some, we got, we got probably the best question of the day.
So there's a tease for you.
But let's get to it.
Kevin, what do you got?
Yeah.
So the second to last question, the co-main event tonight is Mark's question of, I offer you a pill
that makes you forget everything bad the debacks have ever done.
But you lose all of your hair, including your eyebrows forever.
Didn't even, well, is that like head, hair?
Like is that beard hair as well?
I mean, he said all of your hair and eyebrows forever.
So I imagine like I imagine alopecia is what he's, he's giving you here, right?
Yeah, I guess that is the would you rather.
I'm going to look like noho Hank from Barry.
But I, no, I'm not taking that deal.
You know why is because as much as I won't remember the bad things the Diamondbacks have done and all the bad things that have happened to the Diamondbacks, guess who's going to remind me of it?
each and every one of you, every single chance that you get.
Maybe I have like the Memento thing where every 15 minutes my memory wipes clean of all the bad things that the Diamondbacks have done.
You guys will figure that out and you'll wait every 15 minutes to remind me of everything of Madison Bumgardner.
You'll remind me of missing the last postseason last year by one game and the Brewers game.
We'll talk about the Brave series from early in the year in 2024.
we'll talk about you know
Paul Seawald these are all
things you guys will constantly remind
me of so I don't know if I'm willing to make
the personal sacrifice also
I would go on I want to go
on record as to say that maybe
I blame the Diamondbacks already
for causing the majority of my hair loss
and I blame this show for how
gray my beard has turned in just
three short years so if you want
to talk about the effects that the
Diamondbacks losing and the bad
things that have happened to this team have had on
anybody you're looking at it pal it's me look at me i'm wasting away here before your very eyes
on that note our main event let's go is that a good question i got that one done all right well
yeah no better segue than that uh handley wants to know what would mine large intimate and the
mayor's tag team name be and i will also extend this question to say what would our finishing
move be as a tag team there all right well i have some ideas here um
When it comes to pro wrestling, there's a couple of ways you can go.
You adopt a new identity, right?
That's that you adopt a new identity that is the core of what the two of you represent.
So I feel like the first name that I can come up with is the erotic counsel.
Wow.
Coming out hot.
Starting out hot.
Yeah.
The erotic counsel.
And like it would just kind of be a mystery.
as to what that really meant or what our job together, you know, as an erotic counsel would be,
but it would be, you know, it would be formidable.
You would be intimidating.
That, that, that, that weirdness would be enough to throw our opponents off.
But then I have a more direct tag team name here.
I think that is, it's just the classic pro wrestling thing where you, you have to take,
you take your identity, right, because you're, you're such a big personality as large intimate.
take the mayor you put them together right um and you get the mayors of of intimacy wow i do love that
it's like you know you're right about the name thing some of the best tag teams uh names wise at
just brings up rock and sock bang rock and then mankind yeah exactly exactly yeah so that's
i love that where you combine the two names i do like that one so far better than the erotic
council you like you like mayor's of intimacy okay well i think we'll be taken more seriously as the
mayors of intimacy than the erotic counsel i feel like we'll just be like you know opener like comedic
relief backstage vignette guys keb keb joins us and says first thing i heard when i clicked on was erotic
council welcome to the show keb welcome to the show um yeah that was you're right that was that was
that was craig's nickname um we do have one more though um and i think this is the best one of all all right
laid on us sex in the city oh might have
some branding problems.
Large. No, but see, that's the thing is we're only going to be on the
Indies. We're going to get rebranded when we get brought into WWE anyway, so it doesn't
matter. It's more about the attention. Saints in the city.
Sean says the St. Rican, let's go. I love it. I don't see, I don't want him wearing
St. Louis apparel, though. I refuse to tag with him if he's going to come out in St. Louis
sports apparel. Well, we thank you guys, of course,
always for your wonderful questions and got a big game tonight big series against the
Baltimore Orioles their starting pitcher has been their starting pitchers have been
far more successful than ours so hopefully the Diamondbacks can figure out something to do
offensively against that rotation especially without Catelle Marte so the sexilence of
execution oh my god we found it we found it that trumps any name that I just came up with at all
well there you go this is why this is why we workshopped this uh as a
group here. So we appreciate you guys being involved. We appreciate your questions.
