Coming up on today's edition of the PHNX D-BACs podcast, we surveyed you the fans about how you feel the team should approach this offseason.
We're also answering your mailbag questions because it's Mailbag Monday.
Don't go anywhere.
We'll be right back here in 30 seconds.
Welcome in to today's edition of the PHNX D-Backs podcast presented by Bet365.
Download the Bet365 app and use code PHNX when you sign up and find out why, whatever the moment, it's never ordinary at Bet-366.
Well, I am not Derek Montia.
I am Jesse Friedman, but that is Derek Montia.
Wrestling, 90s music, anything else I'm missing there, Jesse?
You're not wearing a Roosevelt shirt, which feels a little bit.
Quirky shirts.
Welcome, guys, Mr. Montia.
Yeah, there we go.
Important for duty.
That is, in fact, Damon Farrell, who's joining me on the show today.
Derek is still somewhere on vacation.
We haven't figured out exactly where he is.
Maybe he's just at home.
know he didn't invite us that's for sure he did wherever he is he did not invite us and we're all
kind of offended by that um brian just from the top rope early on no derrick already a dub
wow that is that is uh that's that's cold uh we are going to get into a whole bunch of topics
on today's show somehow i feel like we have a ton to talk about which is not really what i was
expecting on a on a monday afternoon november 18th but here we are but before we get into any of the news that
that we have.
We did want to show you a picture from,
I believe this was Sunday night football,
something that we caught and tweeted out.
You might have seen this.
It appears, Damon,
that Diamondbacks manager, Tori Lavello,
was attending the Buffalo Bills,
Kansas City Chiefs game last night.
Does that not look like Tori Lavello?
So I obviously saw the tweet that we posted
from our PHNX underscore DVEX account.
Make sure you guys follow.
on all platforms.
But I wasn't watching that game intently.
I had kind of all the games going on around me.
Sure.
Was that they didn't specifically show Tori Lovolo and say this is, you know,
2023 nationally championship manager, Tori Lavello.
That was just a random fan shot in the crowd and it happened to be on Tori.
Yeah.
So I did not catch this moment live myself.
But from what I've been told, they showed this.
And I believe it was actually Jen.
Shout out Jen, Derek's wife, who discovered this for us.
So we very much appreciate Jen pointing this out.
Jen saw Tori Lavello and was quite sure that that's who it was.
And then apparently like a couple of minutes later, they did go back to him and say that I think
they described him as the Arizona manager or something along those lines.
So we do have, we do have solid evidence that this is in fact, Tori Lavello.
He does have Buffalo connections too, right?
Isn't his wife from Buffalo or something to that effect?
Yes, I believe she is.
And yes, I am, I will just say I'm 100% sure this is Tori Lavello, someone who's gotten to know him a little bit.
Yes.
He spends time in the off season in Buffalo.
He is a Buffalo Bills fan.
Those are all facts.
This is 100% Tori Lavello.
So I'm sorry to Sean here, but like he spends time in the baseball off season in Buffalo.
I'm sorry, do we know when the baseball off season tends to lie in the seasonal part of the of weather, Jesse?
Like, I mean, this is.
Yeah.
This could, you couldn't go to.
Buffalo at a worst time of year.
Tori just goes, let me hit a buffalo when it's the literal worst weather in America right now.
Yeah, Tori somehow has like the worst snowbird arrangement on planet Earth.
He's like, yeah, I'm going to be in Phoenix for the whole summer.
And then when it starts getting cold outside, I'm going to go to Buffalo, which is basically
the coldest place on Earth as far as I'm concerned.
You have to ask me about that.
That is actually wild.
I will ask him about that.
That seems like a really unfortunate situation.
But yes, Toro Lavello was on TV.
It was very funny.
But we are going to, as I mentioned in the open from the top of the show,
we are going to jump into some results from a survey that we took here at PH&X.
We put out a survey for our PH&X dieharts looking to see what you, the fans out there,
the fans of this Diamondbacks team, what you're thinking and feeling here as the offseason gets underway.
And so we're not going to go through all of this.
This will be in an article soon and Go PHNX.
where if you're a PhNX diehard, you can see the full results of this survey.
But I did want to highlight a few things that we're going to show here on the episode for everyone.
The first question that I asked was simply,
how do you feel about the Diamondbacks overall direction heading in to this offseason?
And Kevin, if we can pull up what these results look like,
here's what the results were.
And I found this to be pretty interesting.
The question here, as you can see on your screen,
how confident are you in the Diamondbacks overall direction?
The options, very confident, somewhat confident,
unsure, not very confident or not confident at all.
And personally, I sort of expected that this would be kind of a mixed bag.
Like the Diamondbacks, obviously they did win 89 games in 2024,
but they also missed the postseason.
And they're also potentially missing some really key pieces.
They also might lose some really key pieces this off-season.
And so I expected this to be kind of a mixed bag, but looking at these results here, Damon,
we have, if we can go back to it one more time here real quick, Kevin.
I think it was 63, 63.9% somewhat confident, 26.4% very confident.
So between those two categories, you have over 90% of respondents saying that they are either
somewhat confident or very confident in the Diamondbacks overall direction.
Yeah, I mean, I think when you tend to do these surveys, Jesse, I think at least
in my opinion, people are a little bit, I'd say a little bit over optimistic.
They tend to be like the 25% of very confident.
I mean, I don't know if I'd go there based off of just kind of how some of the things
went in the last off season in terms of, you know, big signings, Jordan Montgomery, guys like
that tends to, it feels like it tends to not work out with this organization.
But there is a young group of players that we have built here in Arizona, right?
So I know we were talking about it with our friend Jack Summers on Friday.
You know, you have a Corby and Carroll, Gabby Moreno, you have guys like that that you intend to be the core of the team for a long time.
I think a lot of fans here really trust Mike Hazen and believe in Mike Hazen and what he is, you know, can accomplish.
Tori a little bit more black and white.
I think there are people.
There's, you know, obviously super polarizing as a lot of baseball managers tend to be.
But yeah, I would I would fall myself into that somewhat confident category.
I believe that there's a roster.
There's a core in place.
I like the leadership in this organization.
And obviously, they're, you know, a season removed from appearing in the World Series.
You can't say that they're, they've fallen completely off.
It just was, you know, kind of a calamity of, you know, everything that possibly could go wrong, going wrong for
dime backs during the season.
And even if, like, say, like a Corbyn Carroll just has a strong year start to finish, the debacks probably make the playoffs.
It's really can boil down to that simple.
So I would say somewhat confident is definitely where I reside.
Yeah, so people, and I think that was kind of an overarching theme throughout the surveys.
There really is a lot of optimism out there, at least among our diehard community here that
we surveyed. People believe in this team to be able to bounce back next season and get themselves
back in the postseason hunt. A couple of other questions that I want to look at the results
for. One of them was should the Diamondbacks trade Zach Allen this off season, which we've discussed
on the show. I don't think it's likely that they do that. But I still thought it was an interesting
ask you can see the results here on your screen this is a scale from one to five so five being
that they that people are very willing to trade zach gallon i think definitely was was the exact
word used for a number five whereas one was no way like there is no no possible chance that
i'm trading zach gallon and these are are the results damon you see certainly more people
against a zach gallon trade than in favor but i was kind of surprised that if you if you total up
the four and five categories there, that's about 20% of people who leaned more toward a trading
Zach Gallen than keeping him.
Yeah.
So, I mean, honestly, when you pulled that up right now, I was kind of assuming that the not
trading Zach Allen was the one and two portion of that.
And you said that that was people that were willing to trade Zach Allen.
That's a little surprising to me, to be honest, because personally, I put myself in that five
category.
I think that it would be egregious to trade Zach Allen.
this is an organization.
Wait, so let's go back to it one more time just to make sure we have all the terms
right.
So five is definitely trade Zach Gallen.
Oh, okay.
Gotcha.
One is no way I'm not.
So more people fall on the lower end.
But there were, like I was surprised that again, 20% of people leaned on that higher end.
20% of people lean more toward trading Zach Gallen, the staff ace, than then keeping
him heading into 2025.
Yeah, I think there is a contingency of Diamondbacks fans that think that that would be the right
move because they feel like there's almost a zero percent chance Zach Allen gets re-signed by the
Diamondbacks.
Right.
Which I think is fair and I understand the thought process there.
But I also think that 2025 is kind of, you know, potentially, you know, one of the last big
years that you have in terms of a window.
And I'm just, you know, with Zach Allen and Merrill Kelly, both their contracts being up,
it's something I want to pursue and try to win.
That's what I'm about right now.
And I feel like we have the young guys that will keep us.
relevant for a sustained period of time, but you can't be getting rid of your one ace pitcher
or one of your two ace pitchers on your staff and expect to be a super competitive team.
That's just not reality.
So for me, like, I definitely wouldn't trade Zach Gowan.
I don't trust this organization to get back a return that would make me feel happy with
getting rid of Zach Gowan.
Because I, frankly, when that kind of stuff happens, when we trade a goldschmidt, we end up
with Luke Weaver and Andy Young and and, you know, Carson Kelly. And then, and then, you know,
that's, that just feels bad even today. I'm still not over that. So I, you know, I'm, I'm,
I'm not trading a guy that's that good in hopes of getting a guy back that's going to be maybe as
good as him. Yeah. I mean, it'd be one thing if the diamondbacks were entering a season where it looked
like they, they were a fringe, uh, fringe team, you know, trying to make the postseason, but, but not
with a very good chance to do so.
I think we're all on the same page that if things go right for this team,
if they're able to make some improvements this offseason,
they have a very realistic chance to contend going into 2025.
So, yeah, our last one here, I found to be very interesting.
Can I just say real quick?
Yeah.
I don't think that there's no route to the championship or to that level that we made it,
even if you don't see that as realistic,
there's no route to that without having Zach Allen on this team.
So if you want to feel the team that potentially has a chance to get to that competitive
level, I just don't think that that's the right move at whatsoever.
Yeah, and I think that's ultimately why the Diamondbacks will not do this and probably are not
even considering it all that much at all at this point.
2BMC does make a very valid point in the chat, which is that the Milwaukee Brewers traded
Corbyn Burns and had pretty much the exact same season the following year.
Sure.
We just saw that, right?
The Brewers still won the Central.
Granted, the NL Central is not the NL West.
the diamondbacks face a much higher bar to clear in that regard.
And they're a team that makes the playoffs like every year too.
I mean,
that's an organization that like it feels like they could feel the minor league team
and they'd still find a way to, you know,
get their way into playoffs at some point.
I mean,
and their bullpen was incredible, right?
Like that was their bullpen is always incredible.
Exactly.
So that's,
the diamondbacks don't have that luxury, unfortunately.
No, no, that is a very fair point.
The last question from the survey that I want to look at here.
Again, this will all be up on our website soon where if you're a PhD, you can see all of the questions.
There's a lot more than what we're showing here.
Extension candidates.
I asked the question, which player do you want the Diamondbacks to extend the most this offseason?
There were four options here, Zach Allen, Merrill Kelly, Ehio Horez, all of whom are set to become free agents after next season.
And then the last one being Gabriel Moreno, whose name has come up a lot in extension.
extension talks, at least here on the show.
He's set to become a free agent after the 2028 season.
These results were very surprising to me, Damon.
Zach Allen, your staff ace, right?
As you just said, a guy that you feel you need in order to get where you want in 2025,
he did not get the most votes in this poll, even though he is just one year away from
free agency.
The guy who got the most votes was Gabrielle Moreno, who is not said to become a free agent
again until after 2028 he has four more seasons of team control what do you what do you make of this um
to me at least i guess i the way i see it gabby's obviously the one out of that list that you expect
to be here the longest the the one that you you know i think is the most realistic chance of being
signed long term and in my thought process is the reason that he's the highest on this list is because
people look at that and they say who would we be most mad if we didn't resign but the way i look at it is
is he's under contract through 2028.
Sure.
It's not, it doesn't necessarily need to be a priority to get him extended right now.
We, we have time to do so.
So that's why my answer wouldn't be Gabriel Moreno.
I mean, I understand that people's thought process there, like have not having Gabby on
this team long term would be devastating.
That's not, that's not what I'm arguing.
I just think that we could prioritize a different extension given that we still have him
at a very reasonable value in arbitration years for three more seasons after next year.
So, you know, I personally, I'm going Zach.
I think I, Diamondbacks fans, I think, are just kind of trying to gear themselves up for
losing a guy like that.
But I think Zach Allen is just, he, he has the, even if he had a little bit of a down year this year,
his potential, his peak, his ceiling is so high.
And it's the type of pitcher you need if you want to.
to be a championship team. Yeah, the other thing here that that stands out to me is that,
well, so yeah, I figured that Zach Allen would get the most votes here, probably by a fairly
wide margin. And if you would ask me who second place would be, I probably would have said Merrill Kelly.
I would too. But if we go back to it one more time here, Merrill Kelly actually got the fewest votes.
Eugenio Suarez got more votes than Merrill Kelly did, which is crazy.
That was very surprising to me. I figured that people would want to, you know, your number
one and number two starting pitchers, those are really, really valuable assets for a baseball
team that's trying to go places. And so, yeah, I was, I was shocked by that. I think part of it
goes back to people being not skeptical of Zach Gallen, but maybe just not feeling so confident
about his future. I think that's 100% that, which I can understand because you look at Gallin's
numbers in 2022, you look at his numbers in 2023 and 2024, they're moving in the wrong direction,
right there's there's less swing and miss now than there was a couple years ago not more right
and and there's considerable risk if you sign zach gallon as well you're not signing gallon to a
two year extension you're probably signing him to six years right six years seven years something like
that and so there is there is risk there but all the same i expected people to be like well it's not
my money i want zach gallon on my team for the foreseeable future he would be my my top priority but
I mean, I think me and you probably fit on the same page.
I don't know actually how you feel about Gowan, but I would probably go Gowan, Merrill, Gabby, Gino in that order for me out of those four.
Yeah, I think I agree with that.
As far as as Merrill goes, I mean, Elise puts it in the chat.
His age and health are probably the concern there.
I get that.
You know, he's he has thrown a lot of innings, innings recently.
And he has those, obviously the cramp problems, which are concerning and the shoulder missing four months with a shoulder.
Exactly.
Yeah.
So I get all of that.
but I do think he would be considerably cheaper and more affordable.
So I think that's where it feels like maybe that's even the most realistic out of all of those.
But yeah, we'll see.
Yeah, I don't really expect any of these to happen.
But yeah, I think that Merrill might be the most realistic just given it seems like he very much enjoys playing in Arizona.
He's obviously, you know, spent a lot of time here in his life.
And yeah, he's not a six-year contract.
Like you could maybe tack on two years to Merrill's deal.
deal and it feels reasonable.
He's already signed an extension previously in his diamondbacks tenure.
So yeah, I do see that as being fairly realistic if the diamondbacks wanted to explore that.
Real quick, before we get to our mailbag, a portion of the show, the Salt River Rafters
did a thing over the weekend, Damon.
The Salt River Rafters are your Arizona Fall League champions for 2024.
This was a, I was very curious.
I was at the, I was at the game on Saturday out at Salt River Fields.
I was very curious what a celebration for a fall league championship would look like.
And here, this will give you an idea.
We can't show the video.
But it was pretty legit.
Like they were, they were, they were going crazy on the field, Damon.
Do you feel that, Jesse?
Goose bumps right now.
I mean, I can't even believe it.
Where were you when the Rafters won the fall league?
Up in early in the chat, we had our guy BC in here trolling per usual, you know,
Dodgers fan, always is.
And I just want to say BC, take that, bro.
Rafters are champions.
Some things matter a little bit more than, you know, your little rinky dink,
World Series against the garbage Yankees.
We won the Fall League, dog.
That is what is important in life.
And, you know, I just, just another championship on our resume, Jesse.
It feels good.
Feels good to be a DeBaks fan today.
I mean, when people say Fall Classic, like, does that not sound more like the Arizona
a fall league.
They're not talking.
They're not talking
World Series.
Yeah.
Yeah.
100%.
They're talking about
what happened at
Scottsdale Stadium
on Friday night,
Jesse.
Well,
yeah,
Scottsdale Stadium,
Friday night
was the semi-final,
which the Rafters
had to win in order
to play on Saturday.
Sure.
And they won both of those games.
I knew that.
Tommy Troy went one for three
with a double
and a walk in the championship game.
We'll probably later this week
take some time to go through
all of the Diamondbacks
fall league participants
and look back on the numbers that they posted there.
But yeah, there were,
there were some quality performances on the deback side for sure.
They certainly had a hand in that.
And I know some of you were out there.
It was fun to watch.
And also reality said in, Damon,
that that was the last time I was going to watch
like a live baseball game for a very long time.
I think you'll live, Jesse.
I don't know, but I will.
You're going to get your fill in.
I promise you that.
We'll see.
When it's like mid-August,
all of a sudden you're like man i i long for those those winter days where i could just take a
take a week off so just enjoy it get and then we'll be back for baseball season revved up ready
to go i wanted in august damon but once it's here i don't know what to do with myself so we'll
we'll see about that uh we are going to take a quick break here right on the other side of this
break we are of course getting into our mailbag the mailbag portion of the show we got a whole
bunch of questions from all of you. We appreciate you guys submitting those. We're going to talk about
potential trade involving Ryan Helsley that someone proposed along with some other topics. So don't
go anywhere. And of course, as I said on Friday, I'm still convinced that Derek is hanging out
at Healer River Resorts and Casinos and that he's probably just trying to get back at the two of us, Damon,
because you and I have taken, we've taken some trips there and not invited Derek. And now Derek, of course,
feels the need to send that back in the other direction, I suppose.
So if you haven't been to Healer River Resorts and casinos, you are absolutely missing out.
They have four locations, Wild Horse Pass, Lonebeau, V. Cuiva, and Santan Mountain.

what the next level is all about.
If you've been around with us for a while, you know we have a lot of events out at Healer
River as well.
It's a great place for that.
It's the birthplace of my fantasy football team, which has had quite a bit of success this
weekend, notwithstanding.
We're not going to talk about that.
Big match up next week to me and you, Jesse.
That's true.
Big, big match up next week.
But yes, you do you at Healer River Resorts and.
Casinos, visit play at hila.com for more details.
Jesse, you talk about Healer River and how high that they set the bar.
Another, if you want your bar to be set pretty high, another good way to do that is with
Blue Chil.
Yeah.
I mean, does it actually work?
Kevin, I don't know.
I mean, you tell me, if you're asking that question, Blue Choo wants you to know, they're
going to give you one month free.

I do love Blue Choo, Sean.
Sean's been trolling me the whole chat.
I don't know if you've been seeing this, Jesse.
I'm just glad that Sean is,
Sean is hanging out with us.
Yeah,
we don't have nearly enough Sean to pause.
I'm telling you.
I think he saw the Skip Bayless.
I can't,
we can't lose any shoes to us.
I really do.
I think that was,
I think that got us and a listener.
You didn't believe in it,
Jesse,
but here we are.
The great Sean to pause in the chat,
in the flash.
You know,
you know what day it is,
Damon?
I think it happens to be a Monday,
Jesse.
It is a Monday,
but what I was really getting at
is that it is,
push button phone day.
How could I forget?
Yeah, I don't know how you would have forgotten that.
This unofficial holiday commemorates the anniversary of the introduction of the push button
phone by Bell Systems in the United States.
Apparently, it showed up in Pennsylvania on November 18th, 1963.
So that was what, like, that was a long time ago, Damon.
It was a very long time ago.
I can't do math right now in my head.
I don't know.
You're kind of the math guy.
Yeah.
It doesn't feel right.
I think it's 61 years, but my brain hurts for some reason right now.
So that's really what day it ultimately is.
But you are on the money.
You are also right that it is also a Monday.
And people around here know what Monday means for all of us.
It's mailbag.
Chad, I'm sorry.
Jesse.
I don't know why he does this every time Derek's not here.
Just such a lame way to go to the mailbag.
I mean, I, I,
I found every day is Earth Day, every week is Shark Week, every month is Black History Month, every month is Women's History Month.
I mean, like, there's certain points we have to hit along the checklist before we start this.
You want me to just, you want me to just be Derek?
Like, you want me to just say all the things that Derek says?
I'm not allowed to have my own flair.
I found a holiday, Damon, that I found that it is push button phone day.
I feel like that's worth bringing up in this moment.
Anyway, Kevin, what do we have in the mailback?
First question comes from Travis Mori says,
what are the actual odds that Lawler is named starting shortstop early on in 25
and Domo becomes a super utility player slash does the Kevin Newman role from last year?
I feel as though this would be ideal for the team plus fair chance to get another rookie of the year.
Hmm.
How dare you, sir?
Would you like to weigh in on this first?
Yeah, I think for me, ideally, and I've always talked about this, and it's funny, Sean's in the chat today, because this was kind of mine and Sean's plan that we came up with for a long-term Diamondbacks future. But Catell, obviously, with the injury problems that he's had at times in his career and how good of a hitter he is for this team that, you know, this team goes with Catell. Like, if he's not in the lineup, obviously, you're significantly worse without him there. He's the best pure hitter we have. He, uh, like, I'm, I'm, I'm privy to want to start using him in more.
more of a DH role at times.
And I think that that makes it, slides it nice and easy where Jordan Lawler and
perdomo can play together in the field and both be in the lineup.
Because, you know, obviously Jordan Lawler, the upside of his bat is supposed to be
better than the upside of a Perdomo's bat.
But Perdomo is just such a glue guy.
We see every year with this team when he, if he misses any time, that's when the team
struggles the most.
Like when he comes back, they start playing good baseball again, doing the small things
right. Like I think he needs to be a part of the team in in a majority capacity, like more so than a
Kevin Newman role in my opinion. And I think there is a way in which that they can make that
happen with both Jordan Lawler and Perdomo. Yeah, I think the odds of Jordan Lawler being
named the starting shortstop early in 2025, probably very low.
Corey loves Domo. Yeah, at least as long as Geraldo Perdomo is healthy.
Like if Perdomo were to get hurt and Jordan Lawler is like tearing it up down in AAA, then
maybe more out of necessity than anything else.
You might be in a situation where it's like, yeah, Jordan Lawler is going to kind of have
to be the everyday shortstop right now.
But I think as long as Perdomo is healthy, he has a very tight hold on that position.
And understandably so, as you said, he contributes a lot to this baseball team.
You know, he's not a star level performer out there, but he's also a very valuable player,
like a three war.
It's been about a three war player each of the last two years.
There's a lot of value to be had that.
He's really young.
Yeah, and he's young.
He has upside there as well.
We talked about his Zips projection in the show on Friday, and it's pretty favorable.
Like Zip seems to buy into Perdomo, even though his baseball savant page doesn't
look so good.
Zip seems to buy into him as a valuable player moving forward.
I mean, I think he's a guy that we can, you know, the baseball savant numbers are not going
to tell the full story on a paraldo.
Domo.
You know, even you are willing to admit that.
I am willing to admit that.
He has a lot of intangibles per domo.
And, you know, Tori, that's like, doesn't Tori call him like the on field manager?
Like, that's not just someone that they're going to take out of the lineup, you know,
because they think there's a chance Jordan Lawler's upside is higher or whatnot.
Like, they think he contributes to winning right now.
This is a team that's trying to win right now.
And I hope there's a way in which they can kind of, you know, mix them both in and everybody
gets a lot of at bats.
Kevin Newman got a lot of at bats this year.
But he did.
You know, this is, yeah.
I mean, I wouldn't want to see Prudomo move to a utility role spot, but I also think he would be very good in that role.
He would, yeah.
But yeah, to your point, the fact that Geraldo Perdomo is Tori Lavello's on-field manager, that's another, it's hard to imagine him being moved into a utility role and Jordan Lawler being moved into that role, at least not early in 2025.
I couldn't really see that.
let's go to the next question.
Michael Rokickey says,
what pitcher are you most excited to see Brian Kaplan work with?
So I guess we're kind of thinking of what pitchers do the Diamondbacks have
that maybe have some sort of untapped potential.
Damon, who comes to mind for you on this?
I mean, what's Kaplan's like M.O.?
Like what's his calling card?
I would say that it, from what we learned in the press conference the other day
and some of the stuff that's out there about him,
the word of the day was biomechanics.
It's all about how he has found ways in the past
to maximize what guys are able to give you
and from a health standpoint,
make sure that guys are in a good place.
He's owned his own training facility for a number of years.
There's a lot of big time major league players.
I think players in other sports as well
that have gone to him for that reason.
So yeah, in terms of like,
pitch types or locations or whatnot.
We don't really know much about him in that sense,
but getting guys to stay healthy and maximizing them seems to be his calling card.
Well, I'm going to cheat here and ask you, what's your answer?
My answer is probably what Michael Dixon said.
Brandon Fott, I think, is the first name that comes to mind.
Just thinking of like, which guys do the Diamondbacks have that,
where you feel like there's a there's a path to get significantly more out of them than what you got in
2024 and brandon fought is absolutely that guy it still feels like there could be a breakout season
um out there for him in the not too distant future uh and then i guess going back to what i was just
saying about kaplan and being able to keep guys healthy like merrill kelly has had some issues staying
healthy right uh maybe kaplan can figure out the cramping issue maybe you can lend a hand in that sense
Obviously, Eduardo Rodriguez spent significant time on the injured list as well.
I don't know if he's going to be able to wave a magic wand and make it so D-BAC's
pitchers don't ever get hurt anymore.
But I do think he could maybe be helpful with those guys as well.
I mean, this isn't really going off of anything that you just said.
So sorry about that.
But I do.
You're allowed to have your own opinion.
I'm intrigued by the other young pitchers.
Fought comes to mind, obviously.
But like a guy like Ryan Nelson, can he build off of what he did in 2024?
he obviously had, you know, probably the best season of his career,
especially that second half stretch.
And can he continue to be a not only a serviceable MLB pitcher, but a good one?
And we'll see with, you know, pitching staff change if that,
if that can continue as well as like maybe a Justin Martinez,
what's his, his upside is obviously so high.
Can we get him consistently dialed in?
Because, you know, he has the chance to be a dominant type pitcher in this league.
and that would be, you know, something that I would be intrigued at looking into next season.
All right.
Let's go to what we got next year.
Oh, I love this guy.
His name is Jesse.
If the devacs end up trading one of their outfielders, what positions do you see the snakes getting in return?
Damon, what do you think?
I would say either first base, right?
There's obviously a massive hole there.
And unless you think Pavin Smith is just, you know, in a bigger sample size is going to give you exactly what he gave you last season, which I think most of us probably tend to not.
And also maybe starting pitching, just because you can never have too much starting pitching.
They clearly want to move off of Monty, which would mean that they probably need at least one more starter.
Yeah, yeah, that is fair.
Yeah, first base definitely comes to mind for me.
I think that is probably the, I don't know if I would say it's the biggest one.
I think relief pitcher also comes to mind.
If you were to flip one of those outfielders, we talked about a potential.
It would have to be a pretty good relief pitcher, though, in my opinion, for an everyday type player like that, who's, I mean, I know Alec is, you know, he wasn't great last year, but he does have a lot of potential.
I still think there's probably a lot of teams that are pretty high on him in this league.
And Jake, his value's never been higher.
So, right.
I would need a back like a really, really good relief pitcher.
Yeah, well, I floated to Derek on the show last week.
Would he trade Jake McCarthy for Ryan Helsley, who led the league in saves last season and
throws 100 miles an hour?
And that was kind of a tough question.
Like I think, but I think that's realistic.
I think trying to get a back end reliever with one of those guys, trying to get a
first baseman, those are probably the main things that would come to mind for me.
Maybe a starting pitcher.
As of right now, it feels like the Diamondbacker.
actually have a decent amount of depth in that regard.
It's just a matter of trying to get as much out of those guys as you as you possibly can.
Yeah, I mean, you think they have like great depth.
I mean, I like Yulber, but like I'm not looking at Slate Zicconi and like Tommy Henry and being like,
we're geared up as our seven and eight guys for the season this year.
Like that's.
Well, well, if you look at Zip's projections, Damon,
Zip seems to believe that the Diamondbacks have like 11 totally solid like depth starters going
into next year.
And yeah, I'm a little skeptical of that.
Like it has a low 4 ERA projected for Mena, Tommy Henry, Slade Cicone,
Umin, Lynn, Blake Walston.
Yuma-Lin-Lin too, Gilbert Diaz.
Yeah, Zips was kind of crazy on the Diamondbacks pitching staff.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, watch our show from Friday,
and you'll see what I mean.
But yes, I am with you in that to completely dismiss the idea of acquiring a starter
because the diamondbacks already have this embarrassment of riches,
I don't think I fully buy into that either.
I think I would make that trade.
Gabriel puts it in there that Derek's crazy for not making that trade,
but Helzley's pretty young.
Yeah, it's only one year of Helsley.
I think that that's the main hangout.
Well, you make a trade for a guy like that.
I think you're going into it being like,
we're planning on keeping him around and extending him.
I'm not trading a everyday starter on this team for someone that I plan on having for one season.
The diamondbacks are not the Dodgers.
We don't have the luxury of doing stuff like that.
So I would kind of use that as like in secession.
He's going to get extended.
Yeah.
If you were assured of an extension on the front end somehow, then that would be a lot more compelling for sure.
Let's go to the next question.
This is from Patrice.
She says, will the debacks be seeking another good starting pitcher for this coming season?
Hey, we were just discussing this.
Yeah, I think my take on this is that they probably will not.
not seek a starting pitcher. I think they are open to opportunities on that front.
That is something that Mike Hazen talked about at the trade deadline where he was interested
in acquiring a starter and just the pieces just didn't line up prospect-wise. So I think the
Diamondbacks are looking to be opportunistic if there is a controllable starter out there that they
really like. But I don't think it is as high on the priority list as some of these other things.
in my mind there's five guys that the diamond backs in their diamondbacks rotation that i'm pretty
confident in but i'm not confident in them being healthy obviously for an entire season sure so i i would
like to see at least one kind of decent size move i wouldn't call it like a like a big time signing
like obviously not to like the erud monte level of signing from last off season but maybe a two-year
deal to someone that is uh you know has been a serviceable pitcher that you can trust to to to come
in and eat some endings for you when one of those guys inevitably gets hurt.
Well, we have plenty more mailbag questions to get to.
So we are going to do that.
Don't go anywhere.
We will be right back.
And I want to tell you all about our friends over at Desert Financial Credit Union.
I talked on Friday about how I think it's cool that you can get a debit card that has
like the Arizona Cardinals logo on it or something.
Yeah, and an ASU one.
Yeah, yeah, an ASU one, which apparently ASU got kind of good, Damon.
I don't know if we want to have that conversation.
Yeah, we won't.
We won't go there.
But you can look to Desert Financial for checking and savings accounts, mortgages,
loans, credit cards, investment options, and more.
Derek here, he would tell you that he got his home ownership journey started
because of Desert Financial and all the incredible people over there.
Join a credit union that is committed to giving back to the community
and sharing success with its members.
When you open a free checking account online, you can get 200,
in bonuses, get started by visiting desertfinancial.com slash 200.
And, you know, if you want to use some of that money that you save with that $200
that $200 a desert financial gives you, why not head over to brandedbills.com.
I'm on their website right now.
Great looking website, by the way.
They got a holiday collection.
They got all kinds of stuff over at branded bills.
It's crazy.
I found your teal hat to you're looking.
Oh, my gosh.
Max, we're actually in the middle of the show right now.
I don't know if you knew that.
I asked Max for this for this and he and he just found them.
It is a sweet hat.
It makes me happy.
That teal is,
that turquoise is pretty nice on that state of Arizona outline.
It's pretty great.
And I'm a big,
I'm a big state of Arizona like flag anything type of guy.
Like you put that on it.
I'm sold.
Branded Bills,
Arizona company,
all kinds of Arizona apparel merch, whatnot.
And you can custom orders.
That's the best part about Brandon Bills.
You got a softball team,
business, something like that.
You want the comfiest hats out there.
Why don't you make,
a custom order you can you are you a fan of college teams gc ua i'm looking at tennessee on here like
they got it all at branded bills.com and uh like i said they really are the comfiest hat that i
that i own we got this nice looking u of a one right here next to me got the nice looking as u of jessey up
there uh branded bills uh we are so excited to partner with them and uh you're gonna want to go
head over to their website brandadbills dot com use code ph and x for 20% off that first order i was at the u of a game on
Friday, Jesse.
And all I see is branded bills hats.
Ever since we partnered with them, I have my eye out.
I'm saying like 50% of the hats at Arizona Stadium are branded bills.
People love them for good reason.
They know they know apparel.
They know their stuff.
They know ball.
They know ball.
There you go.
Let's go ahead and jump back into the mailbag here.
What is our next question, Kevin?
Kevin, do you want to read these?
I get tired of talking on this show.
Can he not read things?
Kevin's saying he can't talk, but I don't really believe
the basketball and football guy says if we offered the cardinals Christian Mena for Ryan Helsley,
do you think that would get the deal done?
Probably not.
I think it's not an insult of an offer by any means, but if I'm the Cardinals, I would.
I mean, a lot of it just depends on what do the Cardinals think about Christian Mena, you know.
Maybe they're really high on him.
I don't know.
It could be.
Yeah, I think that man is a really interesting.
interesting pitching prospect, like you've got these two breaking balls and the cider and curve
ball that are both getting tons of swing and miss. The big question with him is can he get his
fastball to a place where it's not just kind of getting killed by teams? And that's sort of been
the story there so far. He did get hurt toward the end of the 2024 season. I believe we'll be
healthy going into 2025. So could be a potential trade piece for the diamond backs. But if I'm the
Cardinals, I know that there's a lot of teams out there that are going to want Ryan Helsley. I'm, I'm
probably setting the bar a little bit higher than that.
Yeah.
You know, I think they probably definitely could get a better offer than that, probably
definitely.
But Christian, I mean, I like him personally.
I think he has potential, you know, he's obviously extremely young for where he's at.
Yes.
In, you know, the terms of the hierarchy of minors.
And, you know, even getting a major league start against the eventual World Series champions,
you know, it didn't go great.
But builds character.
It does build character.
And you remember, you know, not to throw pitches to show Hey, Otani in that location anymore after you did it one time.
But I think he's, I think he's intriguing and he has a pretty high potential.
And, you know, he might be one of those guys that you don't really want to float in a trade because the upside of what he can be is a lot better than what you would potentially get back in a package right now, you know.
So could be.
That's kind of where I'm at.
Like, you don't want to trade a guy is like one of their lowest values.
I'm not saying that he's at his lowest value, but like Alec Thomas would be, for example,
but I think that there is a higher value he can get to before you would, you know, go shopping
him if that's what the Dianbacks would be looking to do.
He is only 21 years old.
Crazy.
And yeah, that is impressive for having already, already made your big league debut.
So, yeah, I think he's an international guy.
I feel like that happens even less.
So, like, at that age standpoint, because, like, he didn't go to, he didn't play, like,
college ball or anything like that right right like a skeins runs through the minors because he's so good
pro ready already but like an international guy there i feel like there's a big learning curve there
the fact that he's already at this level is pretty impressive it is it absolutely is uh let's go to the
next question what else do we got uh you want to read this one yeah we got talking dbacks is there a
clear answer about what's happening with walker right now uh no there is not there is not a clear answer we will
get some clarity as of by tomorrow i will say uh tuesday at four p m eastern time so that would be two
p m here in arizona is the qualifying offer decision deadline so christian walker will have to decide
whether to accept the diamondbacks qualifying offer or reject it by two p m arizona time on tuesday that will
offer some clarity but we all kind of already know at least we think we know how that's going to turn
I think Christian Walker is going to reject that qualifying offer and test the open market.
So we should be getting that news here in the next day.
But beyond that, you know, could the Diamondbacks bring him back on a multi-year deal?
I think that's possible.
It does seem like a lot of people are in on him at the same time.
So don't have a ton of concrete news there just yet.
Yeah, I'd say, you know, this reminds me a little bit.
The way people are talking about the Christian Walker situation right now reminds me a little bit of
how people were talking about Lourdes last
off season, just kind of assuming that
you know, he's not going to come
back and be brought back.
Yeah.
But I think the major difference there being that I think
Christian Walker around the league is valued
more highly than a Lourdes is.
Like there are, you know,
probably 25 teams in baseball that
are interested in bringing Christian Walker in this offseason.
Whereas like Lourdes might have had five.
So I would assume that's where the major difference lies.
But I do think
that maybe we're getting a little ahead of ourselves just like acting like the
diamond backs are just like completely out of it sure uh mike hazen clearly is is a guy that you know
doesn't like to see his best players leave he's made that pretty clear christian walker is such a big
piece of this team from a mentality and leadership standpoint tory loves him like i think the dbacks
are going to try to do what it takes to bring him back i really hope they do um but yeah if if he ends up
signing with like a team like the nationals which seems to be the hot rumor right now
that's going to be, that's going to be pretty demoralizing for me, to be honest,
because that's just a team that it's like, I know they have probably more money to spend
the the diamondbacks do, but they're not in like contention mode.
They're not a team that is better than the diamond backs on paper.
And like Christian Walker, you know, I think if all things are equal,
he'd rather stay with the organization that he's been at that he's found success at for
the first time in his career that's helped, you know, made him into one of the faces of this
franchise over, you know, going to a team like the Nationals that has been, you know, fairly
irrelevant recently since their World Series. So I hope we bring Christian Walker back. I'm a little
bit more optimistic than a lot of Diamondbacks fans, but I still feel like we lose him.
Let's go on to the next question here. This is from Corbyn Carroll himself. I appreciate you tuning
into the show. Has there been any word on next season City Connect jerseys? I haven't really been keeping up,
but I remember rumors about them potentially being purple.
This was something that I believe Derek Hall,
Diamondbacks president and CEO,
kind of floated an idea at one point of that,
you know,
maybe we would see Purple and Teal show up again.
I don't know if he specifically referenced the City Connect,
but it did sound like that was something that could happen.
And we do expect the Diamondbacks to get new City Connect jerseys here.
At some point, I believe that the contract or whatever,
whatever it is with the Serpientis jersey is now complete.
So we could get some announcement along those lines at some point this offseason.
And Damon and I imagine purple and teal would be the, that would be the way to go.
Yeah.
I mean, if they, even if they made like a modernized version of it, I think that that would still make fans happy.
Yeah.
And so that's that's where I'm at.
I think there's a lot of, this could be, there's, there's a lot of potential here when we're
talking about the purple and teal.
So they got to get it right.
Because if they get it wrong, using purple and teal, this fan base might, you know, riot in the streets.
Yeah.
But yeah, I'm excited for it.
The Dimebacks uniforms, you know, they're alternate uniforms, I feel like are usually pretty good.
Serpientes was a hit.
Everyone loved it.
Great looking jersey.
Let's keep it going.
I mean, I think we all want purple for the most part.
Yeah.
Yeah, there will be riots if they don't.
Kevin can't speak right now.
So I'll just throw them under the bus.
but Kevin said that he told me the other day he likes the red better than the purple.
Unbelievable take.
I mean, just so bad.
So, so bad.
But that's classic Kevin.
That's classic.
I was going to say, yeah.
Very bad take, but very on brand at the same time.
We have a couple more mailbag questions to get to some final points that we want to cover on this Monday edition of the PHNXD back show.
We'll be right back.

You know, I would love to be down there.
And I'm thinking about going to that Territorial Cup games.
Maybe I will make it out.

that chicken and pickle in Glendale.
It was so much fun last time.
Johnny brought a ringer,
bow ducked the entire tournament.
And we'll see what happens this time.
Make sure you guys are hitting up our events tab on our website at go phnx.com.
Well, we have a couple last mailbag.
questions to get to real quick. So let's go ahead and jump back in. This comes from Sam
Langston. What is the plan for Adrian Del Castillo? Do you have any thoughts on how he could
improve his defense to not be a liability compared to Gabby Moreno? Yeah, as far as what is the plan?
I think the Diamondbacks will continue to develop Del Castillo as a catcher. I'll maybe get some
clarity on that at the winter meetings. Tori Lavella will be there. We'll see if maybe the team is
is thinking about moving him to a different position.
As of right now, I don't think that's the case.
It's hard to teach arm strength when it comes to catching base Steelers,
but his pop time ranked in, I believe, the fourth percentile.
So in terms of things that guys actually have control over,
I think that would maybe be a focus,
is just trying to help Delccio make the transfer a little bit more quickly.
And then, you know, of course, continuing to make improvements in framing and blocking
a catcher is is involved.
There's, there's,
there's a lot,
a lot of things to learn there.
Yeah,
it,
it's,
it's,
it's,
it's,
it's,
it's,
I didn't know that was,
I didn't know that was a position that defense was,
was,
was,
was, it was important.
But the dime backs clearly value defense,
I think,
on a higher level than,
uh,
some other organizations in baseball,
especially at the premier positions like that.
Um,
I,
I don't think that ADC has a long term future as a catcher on this team.
If he's going to not be able to develop,
but I think they're going to give him an,
an opportunity to.
And I trust this franchise's coaching staff to, you know, hopefully get him there because
they seem to be a pretty solid defensive-minded coaching staff.
But, yeah, if it doesn't work, I mean, I still think he has the chops of to be a good
enough hitter where he can, he can make it in Major League Baseball.
I mean, what we saw from him in short flashes, I know he cooled off a lot, but he does
have pop.
Like, that's undeniable.
He can, he can really hit the baseball hard.
So, you know, I'd like to see, even if ADC isn't.
going to be a I'd love for him to be the backup catcher because he's such a good hitter for a
backup catcher that that would be you know ideal for this team but if he can earn himself maybe
some dh spot at bats too that would be a big step for him um and you know as well as if they
don't resign christian walker he could potentially see some time maybe at first base you never know
so yeah i i like ADC i'm i'm pretty high on him i think that hit tool is just good enough in itself to
for him to be a worthwhile player.
And, yeah, I mean, I'm excited to see what his development looks like this year,
because I really think that if he can start at least catching at just like a slightly below
average level, that's an extremely valuable player.
Yeah.
Obviously, last year, his catching, his defensive work was pretty bottom tier.
Need him to get better in that regard.
Yeah.
And I do think if the diamond backs don't make any big time additions for the DH slot, like Adrian
del Castillo, along with pavement.
Smith potentially, I guess sort of depending on what they do at first base. You could, you could be
relying on both of those guys, you know, just sort of hoping that one of them can give you some
production in the DH slot. Kevin, let's go ahead and skip to the very last question that we had.
We're running a little bit short on time here, but we did want to help Elizabeth out. Elizabeth's
asked, what is the best way to get rid of a cold help in parentheses?
Daman, I am one of those people who just tends to kind of weight the thing out when I get sick.
You know, I'm big on, I'm big on cough drops and drinking tea and, you know.
Well, there we go.
That's some, we're getting somewhere.
I guess, you know, like Tylenol or whatever.
But beyond that, I don't have any, I don't have any tricks or anything.
So maybe you have more than I do.
If you have access to a son of Kevin just yelled it out there.
I mean, that would be pretty nice.
Sweat it out.
I mean, that's, you can't go wrong there.
But, you know, zinc, elderberry.
a lot of, you know, some, some vitamins, some supplements that you can get in that can help you get over a cold faster.
I think those are both pretty good ones.
You can get them at any of your local pharmacies as well as like, you know, eat some soup, drink some tea, like Jesse said, put some honey in it, put some lemon in it.
Stay hydrated, lots of electrolytes, pound liquids.
That's what I always say.
Just shove liquids all day long, even when you're not thirsty, Gatorade water, you're always sipping on something.
Take a couple of zinks, and you'll be back in a day or two.
Sean says emergency, another good one, airborne.
Max would be furious with us right now.
Whatever.
Max can be furious with me all the time.
It makes me smile.
It makes me feel like I'm doing the right thing.
Well, Elizabeth, we do hope you feel better.
And before we get out of here, I do want to touch on just a few quick dates coming up this
week.
There are some things happening in the world of baseball this week that we want you all to
know about.
I mentioned the qualifying offer decisions deadline.
That is on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Eastern. 6 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday is the deadline to add prospects to the 40-man
roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. So that's certainly something that we'll be discussing
here in the coming days. We'll see if the Diamondbacks add anyone. November 22nd, which is Friday.
That is the non-tender deadline. I don't really expect the Diamondbacks to non-tender any of their
players, but there are certainly going to be guys who are non-tendered across the league. So
possible you see some trade movement potentially leading up to that.
And then on the awards front, this is a big week for the BBWAA awards.
We have the rookie of the year awards being announced tonight on MLB Network,
manager of the year tomorrow, Sy Young on Wednesday and MVP on Thursday.
So it should be fun to see who wins all these things.
Yeah, absolutely.
Kevin telling Sean in the chat that he's trying to take the baton of trolling Damon
at this company over from them.
I'd say that that's actually exactly what's happening,
but we miss you too, Sean.
Thank you for popping in the chat.
We had a good time.
We do miss Sean.
And we thank all of you for being here with us,
not only Sean,
but Sean is,
we do miss Sean around here.
We thank all of you for being with us here
on this Monday afternoon.
As always, you can give us a follow on Twitter.
I am at Jesse N. Friedman.
Damon is at Damon Dogg.
Kevin is at Kev Tom Wright.
as Derek says, you can figure out how to spell that on your own.
You can follow our beat account at PHNX underscore D-Backs,

Thank you again all for being with us today.
And remember, kids, baseball is fun,
but it's so much more fun
when Christian Walker stays a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
