Starting point is 00:00:07 Hello and welcome back to baseball, baby. It is our week. It is our time. We are back. And of course, we never left. Welcome in to the PHNX DBAX podcast right here on PHNX. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of the MLB. And I'm joined by my vice mayor of the MLB, the one and only, Thunderstick, Jesse Friedman.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Jesse, a ski to you, sir. I know we were in the office not like moments ago. It felt light. Thanks to technical difficulties once again on the Internet's part. We are back in our homes. But hey, this is a splendid week. And we are very excited for what we get to cover this week. Pitchers and catchers reporting back to Salt River Fields on Wednesday,
Starting point is 00:00:53 which isn't really anything new because the guys are just, the boys are out there. They're out there training. They're out there getting it in right now. My favorite thing about the Super Bowl, Derek, is when it's over. Speak on. And when we officially can say that we've gone from football season to baseball season, it is a glorious thing. And not, I mean, obviously the NBA, they're still in the middle of the season doing their thing.
Starting point is 00:01:19 They'll continue to garner attention for a while. But yeah, it is. I mean, this is the week. This is the week where pitchers and catchers are poor. We're just a couple days away from that, as you said. And, yeah, I'm pretty excited. It should be fun. This is baseball nirvana.
Starting point is 00:01:38 So we get to experience all the joys of not only covering the team during the regular season, but we get all of this stuff. It's why the players like living here. So they have to move around and go somewhere else in order for them to get their spring training in. But the Diamondbacks, they're still trying to make some moves.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Speaking of moving around, they are still on the hunt in the free agency market. We know we discussed this last week a bit, but with pitchers and catchers reporting here on Wednesday, it would appear the Diamondbacks still are not done at into this roster. Yeah, yeah. I mean, we got that report last week that the Diamondbacks were looking for a right-handed
Starting point is 00:02:12 bat to pair with Jock Peterson. And, you know, that feels like the kind of pursuit that would probably lead somewhere. You're not, you know, if you're interested in those guys, you're probably not spending a ton of money. And I, you know, would imagine that you would be able to get one of those guys for something reasonable. I think Randall Rishik in particular, I'm not sure any team. team is really going to view him as an everyday player at this point.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Just given his recent numbers against, you know, against right-handed pitching, it's been pretty rough. And if you're talking about a, you know, a platoon-only corner outfielder, the price tag there theoretically,
Starting point is 00:02:50 you know, wouldn't be that high. So I would think if the diamond backs were interested in these guys, that, you know, it's something that they would, they would be able to get done. Of course,
Starting point is 00:02:59 they do still have Jake McCarthy. And as we talked about last week, there are some complications with, you know, if you bring in another right-handed hitting outfielder, you know, how does Jake McCarthy fit on the roster? He probably doesn't. He probably would have to start the year in AAA, which isn't the worst thing necessarily. But yeah, I read that somewhere. I read that somewhere. I read I read noted debacks insider Jesse Friedman thinks that Jake McCarthy is going to be the odd man out, I believe is what I read somewhere. But who knows, who knows how
Starting point is 00:03:27 accurate that report is. MLB trade rumors does mention that the debacks are still in the hunt for a right-handed bat in an article about Jorge Salar, which gives you a little excitement until they basically say that they shoot down that idea, right? At this point, Solair is going to go to a team that is going to have,
Starting point is 00:03:50 give him those at bats, and it doesn't look like the Diamondbacks have those at bats to give someone like Jorge Solair at this point. Yeah, I mean, I don't think there was any reporting attached to that. That was just MLB-Drears putting two and two together and being like, Yeah, the devacts are interested in a right-handed bat still. But is Jorge Soler interested in a short side platoon role? Probably not.
Starting point is 00:04:13 I don't think that's what he's looking for. There was some reporting in that story about Jorge Soler looking for three years and that most teams or every team so far has only been willing to go to two years. Yeah, I don't think the diamond backs of all teams would be going to three years for a guy who wouldn't really fit on their roster very well anyway. So I don't think we're talking to Horace Salair at this point, but I still think that we are talking about a right-handed bad who could come in and help balance things out,
Starting point is 00:04:43 especially, you know, even those games where Jock Peterson starts against a right-handed pitcher, if a team brings in a tough lefty at the end of the game, and Jock Peterson staying in the middle of your lineup, you don't want to be stuck with having to, you know, continue to hit him in that spot.
Starting point is 00:04:57 So this is something that from the beginning, when the debacks made that Peterson move, it kind of always made sense for them to try to add another right-handed hit her. We weren't totally sure initially if that's something they were really going to do, but now it looks like they are at least trying. And that bat might not come necessarily from free agency. Like you said, Jake McCarthy, still a guy that will see how he fits in, but that could still be part of some sort of trade package as well. And the Diamondbacks could acquire that bat through trade.
Starting point is 00:05:29 Though I don't even know if that's very likely. It feels like if they're going to do that, they're going to get maybe one of those other pieces that they still need, like a reliever or something like that of the sort. But the roster is fairly stacked as it is constructed right now. And we've talked about how the starting lineup for a lot of situations looks pretty good. There's still some holes. There's still some areas where you would like to see some improvement. There's a definite drop off in production. You know, once we start talking about pulling Gabriel Moreno out of the lineup, what you're going to do with Jack Peterson,
Starting point is 00:06:00 and some of those scenarios that you discussed. But for the most part, that's one thing that we have to take into consideration with the, with free agency moves is who are the Diamondbacks going to move? And how are they going to, you know, how are they going to construct the roster with getting another addition at this point? I don't know what they're going to do for a few, you know, positional needs that they still have.
Starting point is 00:06:22 But Steve Gilbert did come out with his roster projection today. And noted DeBack's insider Jesse Friedman also put out his, his own set of roster projections. Well, there weren't many differences between the two, but there were a couple of differences between what Steve had and what you had, Jesse. Yeah, I mean, I'm like a complete psychopath and I released mine about a month ago now. So mine is a little old. The Diamondbacks hadn't acquired.
Starting point is 00:06:51 But not that dated. Yeah, it's not that dated. It's not that dated. Yeah, it's not that dated. I mean, I think the Diamondbacks moved on from Colin Snyder. So I'd have to subtract him from some of the depth options for relievers that I had. They traded Dominic Fletcher. So I'd have to remove him from the depth options in the outfield.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Then, of course, they signed Jock Peterson. But, yeah, outside of that, I mean, you know, the fact that I did it a month ago doesn't really change a whole lot. But yeah, me and Steve are in agreement on pretty much everything. All of the biggest items, certainly. There are a couple of differences here. one of them is in the infield as far as the depth there goes. Steve had Jay Peterson not making the team and Emmanuel Rivera making the team, whereas I had Jace Peterson in there, not a Manuel Rivera.
Starting point is 00:07:39 I think I would, knowing now that Jock Peterson has signed with the Diamondbacks, I think I would probably make the same move that Steve did. Just because now that we know Jock is in there, you're going to want more balance. You're going to want more right-handed hitting. I would want to favor right-handed hitting on the bench as opposed. host to lefties. Back when I did my projection, I was more expecting the diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:08:02 to get a right-handed designated hitter. We, of course, did know that was sort of, you know, they were still in on JD Martinez and Jorge Saler and all those guys at the time. But yeah, I think I would agree with that decision that Steve made now that Peterson is on the team. He also had Andrew Saul-Frank not making the team and Kyle Nelson on the opening day roster.
Starting point is 00:08:24 I had Andrew Saul-Frank on my opening day bowl. and Kyle Nelson being an odd man out there as far as lefties are our concerns starting in AAA. Yeah, I mean, I wrote at the time, I think that could go either way. The Diamondbacks have a lot of bullpen competition coming this spring. So, yeah, I wouldn't at all be surprised if that's how things turned out with Nelson and saw Frank out. Yeah, I mean, again, none of this is news, especially considering when you look at the roster, it does, I mean, everything he said makes, makes sense, right? Emmanuel Rivera definitely makes a little bit more sense, like you said,
Starting point is 00:09:03 with Jack Peterson now. Yeah, that's totally the move you would have to make. Yeah. Yeah. But, of course, the Diamondbacks still might not be done, like we said. So I have no idea how this could change between now and opening day. We do know that one of the names that they are interested in bringing back is Tommy fam.
Starting point is 00:09:22 And while ESPO is giving me just one. last opportunity to make all of my Tommy fam Jock Peterson jokes in one short that I'm going to have once I do that I'm not allowed to make any more jokes about that which is it's understandable I've slapped that horse to death but Tommy fan meanwhile is an absolute legend because of his Super Bowl tweet Jesse do we have that tweet Damon if you would please do we have that tweet maybe oh here it is all right This tweet right here said, this dude Tommy Fam was at the Super Bowl in the second quarter and home in the third. Tommy Fam had pictures from him at the Super Bowl and then on his couch in Las Vegas at his home. And my God, Jesse, this is the most relatable thing anyone has ever done. Do you know how many times I've been at an event like this and I wanted to just leave to go home and watch it from my house. I mean, I don't have a house in Las Vegas, so I wouldn't have had this opportunity, but still, what an absolute legend for doing this. And he's right. He's not wrong. It is more
Starting point is 00:10:37 comfortable and better to watch it from your house. He's not wrong. Yeah, I mean, 49ers, though. Yeah, that's fair. My, my biggest takeaway here is that Tommy Fam apparently owns a helicopter because I'm not sure how else someone, the traffic in Vegas, Derek, appeared He walked, Jesse. There's no doubt in my mind that that man didn't walk home from there. Maybe that's what it was. I mean, the halftime show is relatively, is relatively long. So he did have some time.
Starting point is 00:11:09 But I don't know. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I did. I was at Summer Slam at Allegiance Stadium, W.W.E., of course.
Starting point is 00:11:19 I know you're a big fan. Of course. And I walked back to my hotel from Allegiance Stadium because of the nightmare that traffic was on leaving and how much they were trying to charge you for a lift. So I can only imagine what getting a ride out of the Super Bowl cost. You're right. I mean, the man had to have, maybe he got, do they, are they, I don't think they allow those little bird scooters there, right?
Starting point is 00:11:39 Because that, that would definitely be a low-key gangster move to hop on one of those. But again, the most relatable thing anyone has ever done when attending the Super Bowl, leaving in the middle of it and going to watch the rest of it from their house. People in the chat are making a good point, too, that. like football of all the sports and granted I haven't been to that many NFL games, but it does feel like football is is probably the worst one to see in person, especially, you know, you're in just like this, this enormous, enormous stadium. And just your view tends to be like there are, I mean,
Starting point is 00:12:14 there are situations in baseball, certainly, where, you know, your seat at Chase Field has a worse view than your seat on the couch, you know, watching from home on TV. But still because of the, you know, the environment getting to be there, getting to, you know, experience it in person. It's still worthwhile. With football, though, it does feel a little different where your view at the stadium might just be kind of atrocious or, you know, if you weigh on one right behind the end zone or whatever
Starting point is 00:12:42 is Tommy fan appeared to be here. Yeah, you can have a great seat, terrible. But still not see the game well. You know, that's definitely a big part of it. Elizabeth says, what a waste of money. chances are Tommy fam did not pay for those tickets. And even if he did, he has athlete money. As Brian said, Brian says,
Starting point is 00:13:00 Fam makes more than Derek breaking news. That's absolutely the case. I can 100% confirm that without even checking. It's close, but it's clear. When my contract came up, there was a negotiation that took place. Let's just say that much. But definitely at least says NFL games are only good in person if you have
Starting point is 00:13:18 expensive seats. And then even the expensive seats, like if you're, even if you're on the side, and you're down on like the 20 yard line for one end zone, you're missing a lot of the game that's happening. Yeah. The other one,
Starting point is 00:13:29 uh, Connor says, I respect Tommy saying this game is a snooze fest so far. So I'll stay for usher and dip. Uh, yes, that's, that was,
Starting point is 00:13:37 that was the move. It was the move to make. And I applaud him for doing so. I, I, look, I'm to the point in my life now where, if I'm not enjoying myself enough at an event, I want to leave.
Starting point is 00:13:47 I've had friends that did that. And I didn't think like, what an idiot. I just envied them the whole time. When they left. All I could think about was how much I wish I would have left with them because low-key, great move. There were people leaving the Super Bowl party I was at last night during halftime. And after they walked out the door, I thought, should have gone, should have gone.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Because now I'm here and now I want to watch the rest of this game. Game, Super Bowl, game did get very good in the second half. So that was at least fun and worth watching. But of course, they're done now. They're gone. It's their time is up. Our time is now, as John Cina would say. And of course, we thank you guys for being here.

Starting point is 00:14:55 I don't know what flooring I would put in this ridiculous office of mine. Maybe, maybe I would go with something that was like a, I don't know, cosmic bowling alley slash roller rink because that seems very appropriate for this room. But maybe, maybe I'll go with some hardwood, hardwood in here. Maybe the acoustics might be great,
Starting point is 00:15:15 regardless of what flooring I'm going to go with. I'm going to go with Empire today to get it done. Nothing gets me more pumped, Jesse,
Starting point is 00:15:59 than thinking of the Circle K strikeout meter at Chase Field. Just warm it up. You know, there's someone right now cleaning it up, making sure that it's the bulbs are all good and everything. And it's going to, we're with this pitching staff. It's going to be busy this year. But, of course, we know Circle Ks are everywhere, even in Chase Field.

But of course, you can jump in on the fun right now and get some money, save some money right now over at Circle K. Jesse, it's our week, right? Every year is our year, though. We've said that on this show.
Starting point is 00:17:12 And as you know, that's what we do on this show. Every year is our year. Every week, baseball is back. Every week is also Shark Week. I don't know how those two things coincide, but it's true. It's the way it works around here. Every day is the day pictures and catchers report right here on PHNX D-Back Show. But of course, on Monday, is the one thing we do is go to the mailbag.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Damon, if you would, let's go the mailbag. I'm trying to get to everything in my mailbox. I'm trying to get to everything in my mailbox. And then once in a while, there's a letter that makes me go out. Shout out to our friend Megaran on his Moroccan adventure that he is on right now. it's incredible. He is visiting some amazing places. So if you don't follow him already, make sure to do so because he is on tour in Morocco and having the time of his life. Trust me, I know he keeps sending me pictures of himself on camels almost every other day.
Starting point is 00:18:07 I was going to say, it's never not delightful. It's just delightful every day. What do we got? Certainly, it's certainly going to happen. There is no question you were going to be in camel photos. Oh, yeah. No, it's a must. It's a must. And it's like, it's like pictures of of me with a tropical drink in my hand when I go on that cruise in like 10 days 10 days 10 days can't wait to get out of here all right what do we got what's our first question damon first question comes from travis more more for me on twitter and Travis asks can someone please sell me on you min lin his profile does not excite me as a viable starter at any point down the line but he seems so highly touted did he not also struggle once he got to the upper minors jesse what is the reason for people to be all in on human lin? Yeah, I mean, well, first of all, he really didn't struggle once he got to the upper miners. In 2023, he had 11 starts at AA, was promoted about midway through the season.
Starting point is 00:19:06 And he had a 4-280 RA there, which at first glance might be like, oh, it's an ERA over 4. But again, we always have to put this in context with Amarillo being Amarillo. I mean, it is the most extreme hitter-friendly environment in all of minor league baseball. And a 4-2-8 ERA there is actually pretty freaking good. If you go back to Brandon Fought when he first reached AA, when he was coming up as a prospect, he had an ERA of 4.59 in his first six starts there. That was in the back half of the 2021 season. And then he made 19 more starts there in 2022, had a 453 ERA.
Starting point is 00:19:45 So his peripherals may be slightly better than what we saw from Umin Lin. But still, Umin Lin put up some pretty impressive numbers at AA. There's a reason he didn't land on many top 100 lists, but he did land on Keith Law's top 100 list. Keith Law is apparently obsessed with the Diamondbacks Farm System and has the Diamondbacks Farm System ranked fourth in baseball when we were talking about everyone else having them in like the 15 to 20 range about a week ago.
Starting point is 00:20:13 So shout out Keith. keep law. But yeah, I think the profile for human lin, I will agree that I don't think it's a frontline starter profile. I think it's more of a back-end starter profile. He's a really small dude. And generally speaking, you know, there's not a, there's not a ton of, you know, left-handed starting pitchers, you know, at human-lin size out there. And I do think it's important to take that into account when projecting him moving forward. But, you know, he has a, he has a, a deep arsenal. He has a change-up that is, yeah, his change-up is, is, uh,
Starting point is 00:20:51 really seems to be an exceptional pitch and guys in the miners just haven't really been able to hit that and he's really racked up some strikeouts so far. So yeah, I'm not expecting him to necessarily be like the, the next brand in fought. I don't know if he's quite that level of, of pitching prospect, but, you know, a number four starter in, in a couple of years, I think is, is totally reasonable. And, uh, you know, you're talking about a guy in Yumen Lin who is still only 20 years old at this point. So he's he's a lot younger than Brandon Fott was when, when, you know, Brandon Faw was going through these same levels.
Starting point is 00:21:23 The D-BAC signed Lynn for $525,000 in December 2021. And honestly, I think it's, there's, there's value to his acquisition. There's the arsenal, right? There's no way he's going to have this arsenal to major league level. Obviously, he's probably going to refine it down to the way that he throws his best pitches. But he does get some great movement on his pitches. he has a really good curveball and really hard slider. And he just, you know, the description on MLB.com was that he throws everything and the kitchen
Starting point is 00:21:54 sink, you know, and that the thing is is that he can throw this stuff. Like a lot of pitchers can throw this stuff. But it's a matter of can they be successful with it? Can they be competitive with these pitches? And that's the thing about Yumen Lin is he can be competitive with his entire arsenal that he uses right now. And it's, there's a lot of weapons in that arsenal. It will allow him to have a lot of versatility
Starting point is 00:22:17 on how he approaches batters. That's the one thing that some great pitchers in this league have maybe three pitches, and that's sometimes all you need in order to be a great pitcher. But with his arsenal, there's definitely the possibility for him to be a very tricky pitcher and definitely be successful at a major league level. But I think that the back end starter part, yeah, for sure. Yeah, yeah. I think his biggest limiting fact,
Starting point is 00:22:44 factor outside of just his size. I think he's listed at 511-160. Yeah. Is his fastball. You know, I've seen it's like people are reporting it's in the, it's in the low 90s, you know, right around 90s. Yeah. And that's pretty low, right?
Starting point is 00:23:00 Like for a major league starting pitcher, you don't see a ton of starting pitchers in that velo range, especially when they first come up. So it's possible that he might have to hide his fastball a little bit once he gets majors. And, you know, as you see. said the arsenal is deep. I think there's maybe some ability to do that, but you know, you're going to have to throw a fastball occasionally. And, you know, for him, it's a question of how much damage are our opposing hitters doing on that pitch, especially once he gets to the majors.
Starting point is 00:23:28 And obviously, you know, the gap between double A, AAA and the majors is as big as it's ever been. So that's going to be a big hurdle for him to clear. I think the floor there is, is, is pretty high as a back end starter. All right, Damon. we got. Next question comes from James Sargent at Sergeant orders on Twitter and he asks of the right-handed bench bats discussed Gritchick, Duval and Fam, who makes the most sense? Could Solair or J.D. still be an option that continue to just be unsigned or maybe a mystery named that we don't know yet? I think that mystery name part there at the end is very possible. I think that there could be
Starting point is 00:24:08 somebody, not to say like Jock Peterson wasn't completely unreported, but he definitely wasn't part of the group that we were discussing and that you saw discussed regularly that the Diamondbacks were pursuing. So a mystery name could absolutely be possible because it could come via a trade and there's just too many, there's too many options out there as far as a trade partner are concerned. As far as the other guys are concerned, I do think that, you know, based on the fact that they would be kind of platooning at DH now with Jack Peterson, that Solair and J.D. Martinez, some of those guys. that are going to get regular bats probably start maybe an entire season for a team at
Starting point is 00:24:49 DH are going to get and want. They also, I don't know if the Diamondbacks are going to want to pay either of those guys the kind of money that they would pay in order to have them platooning with Jack Peterson. So I feel like all of this disqualifies Soler Martinez from being options. Yeah, yeah. I mean, to answer the question of which makes the most sense out of the three, it's really to say, honestly. I mean, they all have their pros and cons.
Starting point is 00:25:15 The guy with the most defensive value out of the three is Adam Duvall. I think he's solid in the corners and can genuinely play some center field. I know Grishick and Fam played some center last year as well, but I think it's, I think it's better coming from Adam Duvall. You know, the guy who hits lefties the best is Randall Grishik. And I guess Tommy Pham is maybe the safest combination of skills, where he hit both lefties and righties last year. Adam Duvall hit lefties and righties,
Starting point is 00:25:44 but he did his expected stats were significantly lower than his actual stats last year. So yeah, it's hard for me to settle on one guy who makes no sense. I think you could certainly make a case for all of these guys. I have a feeling that Randall Grishick will be the most affordable of the three, just given that his skill is really just hitting left-handed pitching. I know he's a little bit younger.
Starting point is 00:26:08 So I'm not totally sure how that will factor in, But yeah, the debacks just needs someone who can hit lefties. I mean, I think that's kind of priority number one. And I maybe feel the best about Randall Grishick coming in and doing that than anyone else. But yeah, I could really go any direction on that. I really don't feel very strongly in any particular direction. I don't know if he's going to be more affordable than Tommy Fam or less affordable. But I think that there is the idea here that you know Tommy Fam.
Starting point is 00:26:38 You know what he brings. You saw what he brought last year. and you want more of that. You want that guy in your clubhouse 100%. I think that that's definitely a reason to bring back Tommy fan. But like you said, I think Ritchick makes the most sense based on the fact that his statistics, his numbers, and what he's most likely going to be receiving and asked to do for a team is going to align with what the Diamondbacks right now need the most.
Starting point is 00:27:06 And if he's also the most affordable of those three guys, then to me, he makes the most sense. Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see what they do if they wind up with one of those guys. I guess if you got Grishik, that would maybe be in that scenario. I think I like the idea of holding on to Jake McCarthy for sure because Grishig really struggles against Ritey's. And if you had an injury happen to one of your starting guys, I don't think you want to put Grishik in a situation where he's facing Rite's. That's really where Jake McCarthy would shine.
Starting point is 00:27:37 So yeah, yeah, I'm kind of looking forward. to seeing what happens there for sure. All right. What else we got there, Damon? Next question comes from Grandmaster Ice. I see underscore Grandmaster. He says, if the D-backs acquired another pitcher before the season starts, should it be a back-end reliever or fifth starter?
Starting point is 00:27:58 It's a great question. I mean, obviously, they still have some questions there at fifth starter. They have guys that are capable of filling that role. We don't know who is going to win that role, but we do know that they at least have two guys competing, for that role. One thing I saw the other day, which is just kind of disgusting, I guess, to bring up. I'm sure people aren't going to like it. But Trevor Bauer was begging for like an opportunity on Twitter the other day for a team to just give him a chance once again in Major League Baseball.
Starting point is 00:28:29 And honestly, I felt like he made a fairly compelling case. But that's only if you're willing. Don't do this, Derek. Don't do it. No, I'm serious. It's It's only if you're willing to put all of the moral stuff aside. The sons went through this, right, with a trade for a guy that a lot of people didn't want on the team, not based on his ability to perform, but on his past transgressions. And those were much different than Trevor Bauer's situations. Those were actual crimes that, you know, police were involved with. And there were, you know, there's, there's actually, you know, something taking place there.
Starting point is 00:29:04 Now, Trevor Bauer, again, seems like the wrong kind of fit for most clubhouses, if I'm being honest. And that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. I don't know the man. I've never, never met him. I've never even interviewed him, even though he was on the team at one point while I was covering it. I just know that that is a guy that most likely some MLB team is going to take a chance on. And right now, I feel like much like what he's saying is he's going to come back. He's going to prove himself. He's going to prove that he can behave himself and be a member of MLB society. again if he does get that chance and then people will for the most part kind of move on from this but it's just it was an interesting thought because right now the diamondbacks do have two time frames right
Starting point is 00:29:47 they have two kind of things with you know essentially if if they're trying to plan correctly and plan for worst case scenario they know they only have zach gallon for a short amount of time they probably only have merrill kelly for a short amount of time and in that time you could build on a world series run from last year with the addition of somebody like trevor bower for that fifth starting spot. Now, I hate myself for even saying it, so I understand why people listening might hate me for saying it or bringing up. I just say, I read his thing and I read it kind of like in my mind mocking him a little bit. And then when he was kind of responding to questions and kind of, you know, there were fans that were asking some tough questions in response to his tweet.
Starting point is 00:30:26 And he was actively in there giving his best answer that he could. I felt like it was a man that was truly like trying to find an opportunity. Just. Anybody give me a chance so that I can prove I can, you know, still contribute to a major league baseball team. It's just, it's just getting past all of those, you know, things that teams and players and things don't want to be associated with.
Starting point is 00:30:50 He discussed that he gets a lot of, you know, backing from players privately, but he doesn't receive it publicly due to the backlash that society. Yeah. Would heap upon that person. I mean, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:01 There's just, uh, it's one of those things that, again, it's a, it's an odd thing of morality. but it also kind of is a question that a lot of teams right now might be, you know, asking themselves internally. Yeah, well, rather than go down the very tempting route of opining on Trevor Bauer again.
Starting point is 00:31:23 You hate that, yeah. I'm going to go to someone else. So let's go back to the question, though, fifth starter, a reliever. I mean, I still like the idea of a fifth starter, like forget that whole path, but I still like the idea of a fifth starter. a bit more than a reliever because I do feel like they have a lot of good relief options. And again, that also puts Ryan Thompson and Tommy Henry in that bucket potentially as well. Yeah, I think I would have to know who the guys are that we're talking about. You know, there are some fifth starter types available on the market, you know, like a Michael Lorenzen or whatnot.
Starting point is 00:32:00 That I'm kind of like, I don't know how much some of those guys are really an improvement over what you already have. you always can use more starting pitching depth. There's never a team that has too much pitching. So, you know, it's hard for me to say I don't want the fifth starter. But I am still, and I've talked about this before, I am still of the belief that this Diamondbacks bullpen is a lot closer to average than I think a lot of people are willing to admit. I, you know, they obviously peaked at the end and were outstanding at the end.
Starting point is 00:32:33 But they were pretty terrible for the first four months of this. season and I know that was before CWald and before Ryan Thompson and those guys. Yeah, like yeah, a different, a different bullpen. No, you know, uh, Andrew Saul Frank. You, you had Chafin still here. You had the closer by committee thing. It's, it really is hard to compare what the bullpen is now and what it was at the end of the season to what it was early on because that it wasn't the same personnel.
Starting point is 00:33:02 Yeah, absolutely. But I still think like, like if you look at Paul C. stats, you know, last season and even the couple years before that. Seawald is a good closer. I don't think he's an elite one. And Kevin Ginko, I think, is a good setup man. I don't think he's an elite setup man necessarily. Ryan Thompson over the course of his career has been a solid relief pitcher.
Starting point is 00:33:24 I mean, enormous pickup for the Diamondbacks, no doubt. But he's not, you know, he's not a Josh Hater. He's not a, you know, he's not a Jose Alvarado. He, like, the Diamondbacks don't have the elite level stuff in their bullpen. that I think some of the other teams that they're competing with do. So I, as Mike Farron said on our show the other day, I was kind of, you know, I liked the idea of the diamond backs out into the bullpen all off season.
Starting point is 00:33:48 They haven't really done that yet. So I think I would lean in that direction as long as we, if we are talking about a back end bullpen guy, you know, I see a lot of value there for the diamond backs at this point. So I would slightly lean in that direction, but, you know, starting pitching is always valuable. I certainly wouldn't be too mad at them doing that either.
Starting point is 00:34:09 The relief pitching market has been kind of high as far as, you know, free agents and what teams have had to pay some of these guys. I mean, there's no one really, there's no one really left, honestly. If you're getting a back end relief pitcher at this point, you're making a trade, which is probably pretty expensive. So. All right. What else we got?
Starting point is 00:34:33 Cogs asks, when are we getting a series where Jesse plays O.O. TP Baseball 24 as the Diamondbacks. What are we getting? Yeah, we were talking about this in the Discord a little bit last night. This is something that this is an idea that I think I floated last year around this time. We talked about trying to fire this up. But I think we will try to make that happen.
Starting point is 00:34:58 So stay tuned. We might wait until OTP Baseball 25 comes out because they are releasing their new game here. I want to say around the start of the regular season, maybe about a month from now. So maybe we put it off until then so we can play the new game. And I don't have to make a bazillion trades to get the roster to actually look like the current Diamondbacks roster does and all the other rosters around the league as well. But yeah, that would be fun. We'll have to make that happen. You know, I love me a good baseball simulation.
Starting point is 00:35:33 I know. I know you do. Well, and I mean, not just that, right? you and I need to play each other in backyard baseball and some other games. So that's going to be another thing. Another reason to stay as a diehard, of course, here at go phnx.com. We'll be doing that on the Discord. We won't just play nerdy. We won't just play nerdy sport game.
Starting point is 00:35:53 Yeah, we'll play the show. We'll play some, yeah, we'll play some less. We'll play Mario baseball and other things. Yeah, we got all sorts of options. There we go. All right. There we go. What do we got, Dave?
Starting point is 00:36:02 Brett Lee Johnson at Brett underscore Johnson 44 asks, I hate saying it, but how would you feel about a trade package of Jake McCarthy, Blaze Alexander, and one of Tommy Henry, Ryan Nelson, Blake Walsston for Emmanuel Clayson from Cleveland. I know they said that they aren't shopping him around anymore, but I feel like that could be a win for both teams. That seems like an awfully lot to give up. I don't know. I know he's an extremely good pitcher, but I don't know. What are we thinking here, Jesse? Yeah, you know, it might seem like, a lot, but I think the reality is that it's not enough, if I'm being totally honest. Excuse me. I tried, I tried firing up this trade on baseball trade values, which of course is the,
Starting point is 00:36:51 you know, the perfect evaluator of all baseball trades. Of course. And I have, I have, I have, I have, Blaze Alexander, can we pull up the tweet one more time? I want to make sure I'm getting this right. I have four players in my trade, but I think I might have doubled up on someone. one. So Brett. John says. Blake Blaze and one of those guys, not two. Okay.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Okay. So I have Jake Blaze. I have Jake Blaze, Ryan Nelson, and Blake Walsden on here. And they still have it being as a, they still have this being advantaged Diamondbacks. They have a manual class A at 51.4 surplus value, million dollars of surplus value. They have all four of those players combined the Diamondbacks at 36.4. So it's not like super lopsided.
Starting point is 00:37:37 but it is a clear advantage diamondbacks. And just at first glance, that was my thought too. I think if the diamondbacks are getting a manual class A, I think you're having to dip into one of your top view prospects. There's got to be a Tommy Troy. There's got to be a human lin, plus likely other other pieces as well.
Starting point is 00:37:55 Manual class A is under club control through 2028. So you're talking about getting a potentially elite level closer for five seasons. There's a lot of value there. And I think it would cost a ton to make it happen. And that's why the guardians are likely just going to hang on to him. There's no real urgent need for them to make this move yet, even though maybe they should at some point. So, yeah, I mean, getting a manual class A on the Diamondbacks would be great, but it would cost just probably way too much right now.
Starting point is 00:38:26 He led the league in saves in the last two seasons and had a sub two ERA in 2021 and in 2022. He has a career two ERA. Two ERA career. Your ERA is too. His strikeout numbers did fall last year. He actually was only at 7.9 case per nine. He was almost a little concerning at first glance. His ERA was double of what it normally is.
Starting point is 00:38:52 So, yeah, I mean, yeah, his ERA was a little higher. Why the guardians are shopping him around, but not like super interested in moving him, because it could just be a down season and you see him rebound. And then next thing you know, he's putting up that 1.26 ERA. for someone else and you're, you're hating yourself for trying to find someone to replace them. But yeah, I think you're right. I mean, it just, it also seems like in,
Starting point is 00:39:14 in that scenario, the Diamondbacks are giving up a lot. And it's guys that, like, they could part ways with because these are guys that, you know, aren't, might not get playing time, right? Like a Jake McCarthy, a Blaz Alexander.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Like, I'm okay with those guys being in a package. It just, it gets to a point where you're going to have to add so many pieces to that, it's going to feel like a big, you know, a big risk for the Diamondbacks to bring in one guy in exchange for all of that. Yeah. Yeah, I don't see it happening. They should try to get a manual class A for sure, but I don't see that coming to fruition. Elise makes the best point, she says, but do the guardians really need a closer if their offense can't score any runs?
Starting point is 00:39:56 It's a fair point. It's a fair point. And it's why they probably should be looking to move Emmanuel Claisse sooner than later. I don't know what kind of offers they're getting. right now. But the guardians are in the central and the central is a lame division. And, uh, you know, they're, they're probably, they're probably closer to contending than, uh, than you might, than you might think. All right. What else we got, Damon? Oh, is that all we have for, oh, that, that is the last question for segment two. I'm sorry. I apologize.
Starting point is 00:40:29 Dan, you know, I'm at the program, Derek. I don't know. It's, it's not be, I can't look at his beautiful face. I can't look at his face across the desk for me. Starting point is 00:43:07 Tim Ankenman, Tankenman, R.D on Twitter, asks, with the naming rights for Chase Field Bank One for the old heads expiring in four years, what are some good options you think it could be renamed in the future? Oh my God, there's a lot of good options, right? So many good options. That's a great question. Obviously, Dutch Bros. Field is, that's just so that they have Dutch Bros.
Starting point is 00:43:33 Every three stands. There's another Dutch Bros. That's what I would want. but that's only because I'm selfish. Any ideas there, Jesse? Well, I feel like Abnet is clearly the diamond-deme first choice, right? I mean, how much money did Abnet already shell out for, you know, to have the enormous sleeve patch on the uniforms last year?
Starting point is 00:43:56 Well, the old patches, the ones that they removed off of the old jerseys, those would fit great up on the side of the building, just covering the check field sign. Like you wouldn't even have to have new signs. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it would be the same design, same size and everything. It would fit the outside of the building perfectly. I had one idea. I mean, this is an honor of what most buildings turn into around town.
Starting point is 00:44:19 Damon, you have that graphic? I think he has it. Not sure. Did you get that one in there? I don't know. Maybe he didn't. I had a, I guess, did we, I guess we didn't get it in there. I'm sure he'll get it in here in a moment.
Starting point is 00:44:33 But this one, in honor. of my friend. Let me see you here. Hold on. I'll get it in here, but I will say this. If it was Avnet, would you want it to be Avnet Field, Avonet Park, Avnet Stadium,
Starting point is 00:44:48 Avonet Complex? Oh, I hate all of these. These are all terrible. These are all terrible. Chris Melton in the chat says SnakeBit and I don't care who spins it to their product. Yeah. There's got to be some sort of snake something.
Starting point is 00:45:04 We lost. Damon altogether as a producer, by the way. So we're just, it's just me now flying solo, but I don't know, Jesse. Avnet, Avnet Park. Avonet Park sounds like it would be the correct one. I'm going to, hold on. Now that C. Damon's gone. So now it's just me all by myself, but I'm going to get it in here. And I'm going to put it up there. And this one is in honor of my friend Tim, and again, this is what most places turn into. It's Spirit Halloween. Spirit Halloween, basically, is, is, uh, that, that is, uh, that is it right there. Yeah, I'm really bad at this, but hey, Damon's back. So good. I don't have to do this anymore. Uh, yeah,
Starting point is 00:45:50 what else we got? Damon, did, are you alive over there? He's good. Yeah. What else we got for our next question? Uh, Mike over here kicky, ask, which Star Wars bobblehead would you choose, uh, Corbyn Carol Wookiee of the year, Sith Lordus, Obi-1, Merrill Kelly. I mean, that's a no-brainer. That is a no-brainer right there. It has to be Corbyn-Carrul-Wookie of the year, right?
Starting point is 00:46:15 Yeah, I figured. I figured that's what you do. Sith-Lordis, though. Sith-Lordes kind of goes hard, Derek. I don't, I don't know. I kind of like that. Sith Lourdes is pretty, yeah, it goes pretty. Fifth Lordis with a purple lightsaber
Starting point is 00:46:27 matching the hair a little bit. There we go. There's your Corby and Wookiee of the year. that's fantastic that is fantastic uh man look i mean i'd buy that i still have my josh cole mentor that he's a jenni and it looks very much like me and i just put a little sticky note over the front of it and it says derrick montaa on the front of it so uh but yeah wookie of the year that's that's that has to be it right like there's no other choice for whatever our star wars day bobblehead is than wookie of the year maybe it's corby carroll's head on a wookie body maybe the reverse of what we just showed
Starting point is 00:47:02 Ooh, I don't mind that. No, I don't mind it all. Give him a little fur on the side. I don't know. What else we got, Dammit? All right. Oh, this troublemaker right here, Espo comes in with his Super Bowl question.
Starting point is 00:47:17 And this is for you, Jesse. Espo wants to know if Jesse performed at a Super Bowl halftime, what would he sing? Well, I don't think it's necessarily just for me. I think maybe you'd have a better idea of this than I would. No, I have no clue. You are a mystery wrapped inside of a conundrum. you are an enigma
Starting point is 00:47:35 and I have no idea what you like or what you're into at this point. I could sit here and say baseball songs. I know we've been working on you remembering the words to a milly. So that's something that we're still working on. But I'm not sure if you're ready for a halftime performance to do that.
Starting point is 00:47:53 Maybe a little ski, you know, been trying to be. Yeah, absolutely. You would absolutely be in there. I feel like at this particular Super Bowl, just like a full on Taylor Swift set list would be on. We're never ever getting back together
Starting point is 00:48:10 you know, sing about her and Travis a little bit, try to stir up a little bit of drama out there. I'm not a, I don't actually enjoy Taylor Swift songs really whatsoever. My favorite song is probably lean on me, which I think I've said on this show before, which I think that would go pretty hard at the Super Bowl. That would go pretty hard. Yeah, that would go pretty hard.
Starting point is 00:48:32 pretty hard for half time. Get the, get the emotions flowing there. Are there any specific songs that you think, I think would make sense for my, for my set list?
Starting point is 00:48:41 I don't know. I feel like a little Frank Sinatra rat pack, maybe in your set list, right? Maybe a little, you know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:48:50 I don't know what songs that you would sing, but something rat packish, right? That's Vegas. That's the time. I just, I don't know what music you're into.
Starting point is 00:48:58 You never tell me anything, except lean on me. That's the only, song you know. And you're a musician. I've seen you play several instruments. Everybody wants to see you play that piano that's somewhere in the room behind you. Everybody's been dying for that. So, uh, Gabriel says, take me out to the ball game. Brian says tequila. That would be great. Uh, and Chris asks, would Jesse invite Derek to collaborate? Absolutely not. No, Jesse would not. I know that. It would just be me and Megaran, actually.
Starting point is 00:49:29 you're in. Perfect. We would sing the mail. We would sing the mail mag Monday. That's all right. That would be the opening. I'm on board now. I'm on board.
Starting point is 00:49:40 I think we have more Super Bowl related questions. What else we got there, Damon? Next question comes from Ryan Hanley, Hanley at Ryn, R-Y-N-H-N-L-Y. You're making this difficult on me. What was the best part of the Super Bowl? Jesse, what was the best part of the Super Bowl for you?
Starting point is 00:49:56 I mean, I watched like the second half. I don't really care about the Super Bowl very much. It was competitive, right? Like normally I would say the commercials or something else like that. I would say it was the excessive shots to Taylor Swift and her crew in the suite that they were in. And I knew how much that was infuriating everybody that they kept showing that. Side note, there were other celebrities in the building, by the way. can we get them on camera getting their reactions as well?
Starting point is 00:50:28 I know she has personal ties to the team, but I would have liked to see how Beyonce and Jay-Z we're feeling about touchdowns and interceptions at times, too. I'm just saying. But Chris really puts it the best way. Chris says the best part is it's over and it's our time. And yeah, that is it. Yeah, honestly.
Starting point is 00:50:45 I mean, that's kind of what I said from the top of the show. It's like the best part about the Super Bowl is when it's over and it officially transitions to baseball season. On a side note, I was, I didn't have a strong rooting interest in this game, but I did, I do, I do like the, I do like the chiefs in general. I'm not, I'm not totally anti-dynasty when it comes to a team from a smaller market like Kansas City. I think that's kind of cool. So I was happy to see them, see them pull it out in the end. We did, we did have Travis Kelsey rocking the classic Arizona Diamondbacks hat before practice on Saturday. And I mean, did we, is that confirmed? Do we know that for sure? That is confirmed. There was a picture of him. It's the ice cream hat, you know,
Starting point is 00:51:29 the purple brim white hat with the old school day on it. And honestly, it even looks like it's an old, old like snapback Jesse. It doesn't look like it's a new version of that hat. It looks like Travis Kelsey dug an old Arizona Diamondbacks hat out of his collection. And that I respect,
Starting point is 00:51:45 that I respect. So Brian says the best part was when the Niners lost. Well, congratulations to all of you. Elise says it did not look like the D-backs A honestly. She's throwing controversy out there and saying that this was not, in fact, a Travis Kelsey wearing a diamond-backed hat. I don't know. I trust Elise,
Starting point is 00:52:05 but I don't, it looked like the hat to me. It looks like that. But I am with Elise and then I would need to see a different angle of the hat to be like totally sure. I would characterize it as maybe like 60% certainty. But there's still, there's still part of me that that's,
Starting point is 00:52:23 not too sure about this. I had no idea that this was so controversial. I had no idea. I really didn't. All right. Last question comes from Don Davies. And Don Davies asks which D-BACs player would be the best football player. That's a great question.
Starting point is 00:52:42 I mean, Jake McCarthy played a decent amount of football, I believe. Correct. He certainly comes to mind. And yeah, I mean, I think that's, I think that's probably my, my number one, my number one. Jake McCarthy. Yeah. I am going to go with Zach Gallen at quarterback. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:53:07 Zach Gallen has the look of a modern day stud quarterback, right? And we know he's all, he's all in on knowing everything about plays and everything. like he would have, you know, the, he'd have books, like lots of books about plays. He wouldn't have memorized, like any,
Starting point is 00:53:27 I just think his, his arm would hold up there. I don't know. I think that Zach Gallen overall looks like a great quarterback to me. Defensively, who are we taking here to lay someone out, Jesse?
Starting point is 00:53:38 Hmm. Um, my answer is Kevin Ginkle, but that's based on intensity. I mean, again, like, Jake is a pretty,
Starting point is 00:53:48 like, athletic, but also fairly, bulky guy. I mean, I think, I think Jake has the tools for this. Trying to think if there's, if there's someone, someone that we're missing here. Someone you're missing on the roster. I mean, Corbyn Carol. Corby, we did see some, we did see some footage on the morning of the Super Bowl where Corbyn was throwing football around a little bit. So, you know, maybe, maybe there's, maybe there's some
Starting point is 00:54:19 quarterback, some quarterback instincts deep down there. Yeah, I don't, I don't know in terms of like someone to be a really good defensive player. I think, I think Jake is the, Jake is the choice. Maybe Jock Peterson gets in on, on the action a little bit. He's a, he's a, you know, a bigger dude. The chat, the chat is all in on Christian Walker laying someone out. The chat is all in on Christian Walker.
Starting point is 00:54:42 And I completely agree with them. That's, that's definitely the choice there. He wouldn't care. He would, he would probably take a great deal of joy. in laying someone out. And I, for that, for that, I would say he's our defensive linebacker. But of course, we thank you guys for stopping by. We appreciate you guys. We are excited for baseball this week.
