Starting point is 00:00:01 It's the most wonderful time of the year. Opening day tomorrow. Zach Gallin on the mound, Diamondbacks playing baseball. It doesn't get any better than this. We have all of your updates from Chase Field on the final media availability before opening day. And also, we're going to debate why opening day is even tomorrow. Skiy to you all, we're going live in 30 seconds. Don't you go anywhere.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Welcome in to another edition of the PHNXDVACs podcast right here on PHNX. Happy Opening Day Eve, T, T, all. My name is Derek Monti, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. And I'm thrilled to be joined by my guy on the ones and twos, large intimate Kevin Thomas. Kevin, happy opening day Eve to you. It's a beautiful time of the year. Am I wrong? Is this the, this the greatest time of the year to be a baseball fan? It's the most wonderful time of the year, Derek. It is a wonderful time of the year, time of the day, time of everything. It's not quite hot in Phoenix just yet. You're a goddamn liar. It is hot. It's not quite hot just yet. Very hot.
Starting point is 00:01:14 It's getting there, though. It is getting there. I already hate it. I'm already sweaty. But I am very excited for tomorrow. Hopefully the weather is a little nicer. Tori talked about wanting an open roof on opening. Yeah, I think that's something that we all definitely want.
Starting point is 00:01:27 We want to see that flyover. Want to see all the fireworks. We want to have a great time. We're also excited to see Zach Gallen take the mound against Justin Steele and the Chicago Cubs. Justin Steele, by the way, who's 0 and 1 already with an 11.25 ERA. Not saying anything. I'm just saying, hopefully, that little trip to Tokyo for their opening series, left the Cubs nice and tired, and the Diamondbacks could pounce on them and take an advantage tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Now, tomorrow is Thursday, and it is opening day. Now, I don't want to discredit opening day, nor do I want to say I want, I'm sad that opening day is here. What I will say is I think that once again, Major League Baseball has done a poor job of scheduling. They have opening day going the same day as the Sweet 16 in NCAA. And of course, everybody knows that the month of March belongs to the NCAA tournament. That's them's the rules. I don't make them. I just follow them, right?
Starting point is 00:02:24 So here we are now a potential opening day of today, Wednesday. Nothing's going on. We would all of baseball to be happening today. It would be great to see it. But instead, we get a pack schedule tomorrow on Thursday. And I don't like it, Kevin. What do you think? Are I being too,
Starting point is 00:02:40 uh, am I being too, uh, I guess demanding here about, I want, I want, I want, I want baseball to have all the free space that it can have.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Like I don't, I don't think baseball is going to do well when, you know, obviously up against something like, you know, the NCAA tournament. I mean, especially with my wildcats,
Starting point is 00:02:57 right, Dana, you know what I mean? I had to say, wait. That's, first of all. Party in tomorrow night.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Yeah. Yeah. But no. I know. you took, you stole. Damon from me. Damon was supposed to be on the opening day with me instead now he has to go talk wild cat ball. We're both being stolen from you. Oh and you too. Yeah. Yeah. I don't want to say
Starting point is 00:03:15 I'm stuck with Kyle because frankly, Kyle is is the person. If you want to if you're stuck with anybody, you want to be stuck with Kyle, especially in any kind of emergency situation, storm, plane crash, anything like that. There's nobody else in this office you want to be, you know, stuck with more than Kyle. So happy to have Kyle by my side on opening day. Looking forward to that. forward to still stealing Damon away a little bit at some point. Maybe I'll inform him on what happened. But am I being too critical here? I mean, did the baseball have an opportunity to look at the schedule, understand the assignment a bit and maybe aim for either today or as one Damon suggested Monday, which would have given them a fairly clear runway next Monday to have, you know,
Starting point is 00:03:59 kind of the week, opening of the week to themselves for the first three games. I do not think that you're being too critical, Derek. I think it's very fair, right? Like, what's the biggest criticism of MLB as a league, right? It's the lack of being able to market itself and its players properly, right? I think if you're talking about marketing your league, you should, you have three days. You had three days, right? If you had planned it out properly, right?
Starting point is 00:04:23 You have three days from the Sunday of the round of 32 NCAA tournament. You have Monday, Tuesday, and today. Yeah. And me and Damon were talking about it with you, like you said. And we said, hey, that could have been a whole opening three day set right there. It's just all to yourself. Tuesday, Wednesday, everybody would have been watching, talking about baseball. But, no, we are here.
Starting point is 00:04:39 And people are going to be talking about the wildcats instead. Yeah, well, Sean does say cats and snakes, dubs would be euphoric. So maybe we can make that happen for sure. Who says sub chat, opening day Eve. Glad to see all of you guys here, ski to you all. By the way, speaking of opening day, we got you ready. We got some new shirts, some new fire. My guy, JJ might have made it onto one of the shirts.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Kev, let's see some of that new heat. that we got these are some new shirts you can go find uh at our store and i really really like these by the way uh especially there my guy uh j j making it onto a shirt that's his first appearance he's very excited about that but go snakes we're saying go snakes all season long um sean says i'm mad at earlier season starts but i do miss when it tended to start april more i always had conflicts with that like there is a lot that goes on and for april for me but i've come to expect that and and adjust to it right like my daughter's birthday is early in april we usually have easter russomania as you know is a thing that i have to do so of course uh very very packed
Starting point is 00:05:46 schedule for me though but i'm having a good time i'm going to have a good time because it's opening day tomorrow i'm also having a good time because i recently found out that i'm a witch or a sorcerer i don't know which how i want to categorize that but uh we did have this clip that I discussed on the emergency podcast. For those of you that may have missed it, may have missed the news. Jordan Montgomery will miss the 2025 season needing Tommy John's surgery. We found out that a big reason why he's requiring this is because, frankly, Jordan discovered that he had not been recovering from his outings the way that he should, the way that he was used to. But there might have been a prediction, maybe a spoiler,
Starting point is 00:06:27 if you will, about what was going to happen Jordan Montgomery. It happened on all snakes day, aka that fraud and loser St. Patrick's Day. But Kevin, can you want to go ahead and just key that up for me? But I still had this feeling that some way Jordan Montgomery is going to end up on like the 15 day IL before opening day. And that's kind of what the initial decision is going to be. There's no indication for that. This is purely me recklessly speculating. However, it feels definitely like that could be what we see.
Starting point is 00:06:59 I just don't know. I don't know how soon he's going to be ready to pitch. And it doesn't really. All I'm saying is, is that I was in Las Vegas that weekend. And I don't feel like I properly utilized my powers. Because had I, I wouldn't even be back here doing the show right now. Let's be honest. Had I utilized my powers, I would have been a millionaire.
Starting point is 00:07:21 But that didn't happen. I did correctly predict Jordan Montgomery ending up on the IL, though. I was nice about it, though. And I said 15 day I L, not losing him for the season. So give me credit. Who says, but Derek said 15 to a all. It's not even the 60, pal.
Starting point is 00:07:36 It's not the 60. It's the 160. It's the 280, whatever you want to call it. But the Diamondbacks did make a move. Now, we did talk about how, as you saw there, that this did kind of solve a problem for the Diamondbacks, right? There was a lot of moving parts to this deal. Obviously, Brandon Fott had already won the position for the starting rotation, meaning that Jordan Montgomery was going to end up in the bullpen. Now with Jordan Montgomery not beginning this or not pitching this year.
Starting point is 00:08:05 We also have Kevin Ginkle missing time. The Diamondbacks did go out and make a move to acquire pitcher Jalen Beeks. He recently pitched for the Astros this spring after being signed as a minor league free agent on March 10th. In 2024, he went 7 and 4 with 10 saves and 4.5 ERA. Not anybody that's going to essentially come to this team and dominate, however, a really good arm. And of course, you know, with the Diamondbacks, they kind of had that depth. We're going to talk about depth here in a moment, but they had enough depth to sustain, you know, this injury and not necessarily need to go out and get a free agent pitcher like they did. First, we have Tori LaVolo here.
Starting point is 00:08:46 He's going to explain what Jalen Beeks' role is going to be and kind of how this bullpen is all going to shake up. Here's what Tori had to say today. Kind of a front end situation for right now. And I know that he'd been trending in a pretty positive direction with limited. looks in Houston. I had a nice five, seven minute conversation with him about signing late and then kind of taking the first chance he could beyond a certain point, seem to land on Houston, and he was really satisfied with where he was and how he was throwing the ball. So he knows who he is. He's been around. He has some experience. So for him to get into that role for us,
Starting point is 00:09:23 and we're looking to establish roles as soon as possible. I've been very vague with it because I didn't know what direction we'd be going in. And anything's going to be possible. But I want guys to go out there, take the baseball and win their ass, not be so concerned about their status, but just go help us win games. And the roles will define themselves. We're going to have a
Starting point is 00:09:43 group of guys in the front end and a group of guys in the back end. And you guys know who they are. But for right now, I'm really excited about Beeks and getting them in here and have them help us win games. Obviously, this adds to the arms. It adds to the depth that the Diamondbacks had. More importantly,
Starting point is 00:09:59 has major league pitching experience, something that not every guy in the in the bullpen or in depth chart, you know, guys that are down in Reno are going to necessarily have. But Mike Hazen provided a bit more clarity on the situation. He discussed why getting a guy like Beeks was going to be much more difficult after this. This is what Hazen had to say about the acquisition of Beeks. Yeah, he's going to add some stability to the front end of our bullpen. We have taken on a couple injuries here. One you knew about already, and then one as we've gotten down to the end, and then certainly the second one being Jordan.
Starting point is 00:10:37 And we just felt like, you know, at this time of year, it's hard once tomorrow happens to make changes. Most teams don't make a lot of changes for some period of time into the year. So if you start leaning on your depth, internal depth, right out of the shoot, take on another injury, some type of poor performance, something happens. You have to make a change just because, the pitching gets beat up a little bit, you know, you're starting to stress the pitching staff right away. So this was kind of the last chance where there will be guys available because once
Starting point is 00:11:09 tomorrow happens, everyone's going to settle on their roster and then the minor league guys are going to settle on minor league deal somewhere. So you would have to pull off a trade with a team for their depth. And it gets complicated because nobody wants to give up their depth as much as you would think you could go make a trade to another AAA team. It's not that simple. It's really interesting because, again, it's another thing that we as fans tend to think is much easier than it is. And as Hazen explained there, right, your decisions get made tomorrow. Players have to make a decision. And, you know, again, they can't really drag their feet when being given an opportunity by a team, even if that opportunity is a minor league contract.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Jalen Beeks is 31 years old. He is a lefty, as Aunt Ina pointed out there in the chat. She also said that he pitched with our palettes. Ryan Thompson, aka Tea Time, down in Tampa. By the way, tea time threw sunflower seeds in my lemonade yesterday. And as far as I'm concerned, revenge will be fine. That's all I have to say in regards to Mr. Brian Thompson. But the Diamondbacks did have some more guys make the team.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Bryce Jarvis is another name that makes this team. Obviously a name a lot of fans are familiar with. But the bigger name, the funnier name is Shelby Miller does make the Major League roster as well. Shelby Miller had a 2.57 ERA this spring, 0.86 whip, 11 strikeouts actually looks pretty good. Mike Hazen discussed him coming out of the bullpen, and just the success that he's found there.
Starting point is 00:12:42 So it's going to be an interesting thing to see Shelby Miller once again pitching on a major league baseball mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks. But Tori was very high on Bryce Jarvis. Here's what he had to say about Jarvis making the team. Yeah, Jarvis made the team. You know, he was doing a nice job for us last year when he got hurt. He had to step away to heal up.
Starting point is 00:13:02 And, you know, we wanted to strongly consider him from the moment he walked back into camp healthy this year. And we saw a lot of the things that we remembered. So he's going to get the baseball, most likely in the same type of a role and see where it takes us. You know, he's got good stuff. And he continues to throw well, continues to emerge, continues to develop, trust the coaching that he's getting. and just keep pushing that ball down field with them. Of course, all of our coverage here is provided by our friends at all pro-shade concepts. Remember, if you want to extend your outdoor living area, make sure you look to all pro shades.
Starting point is 00:13:39 And speaking of extending things, the Diamondbacks did extend their depth there with the addition of Jalen Beaks. But they've been doing that all offseason. I had a chance to ask Tori about that. I did ask him just how much last season impacted what they're doing with their depth. I mean, the diamondbacks have already gone through some, you know, serious injuries with the Jordan Montgomery, Tommy John surgery situation. Also Blake Walston being lost to Tommy John situation. They have also already lost Kevin Ginkle, even though it's a more minor loss. I mean, you're seeing here that the diamondbacks are experiencing what they did last year with the losses of Paul Seawald and Eduardo Rodriguez before the season even started.
Starting point is 00:14:19 And like they're just in a really good position. It sucks that it's happening, but it was almost by design because of the fact that this team has experienced that before. This is what Tori had to say, crediting the front office for giving him and his coaching staff this much depth. Well, I think it's a credit to the talent is bubbling up from underneath, such as the pitching depth. And, you know, I don't want to forget anybody, but it's Tommy, it's Yilber, it's Mena that are still, learning and growing, but ready to take on some new challenges, I'm sure at this point during the year, that to me is quality major league depth. You've got to go six, seven, eight, nine, deep as a starter goes. We got really quality arms, guys like Gray Jameson that are sitting in the minor leagues getting healthier
Starting point is 00:15:10 to be the best version of himself. And then you've got unbelievable sort of young, homegrown position players that are waiting to come in here and helps out. It's very powerful. When they get here, they know what the culture is. They know what the system is. They know what their job is. And that's a credit to what's going on in player development. Those guys are killing it. But it's very healthy.
Starting point is 00:15:35 And it's exactly what I think a very good baseball team and a very good baseball organization is able to do is build that depth because you've got to plan for a rainy day. They happen. There are injuries, unfortunately. And we're built to withstand some tough injuries. such as Jordan Montgomery's and that's credit the front office. Well, I mean, that's really the key here to this team this season is that the depth has
Starting point is 00:16:03 seemed excessive at times, but is it, is it or were the Diamondbacks just the squirrel preparing for a long winter? That's really what it feels like here. I had somebody asked me this the other day. They were like, is this potentially something on the DeBAC's medical staff that they're experiencing this many injuries constantly? I think it's just more of us being focused on the debacks because these injuries happen to every Major League Baseball team. It sucks, but it's just a part of the game, especially when you have guys throwing a ball that's this big, you know, 103 miles per hour into a strike zone, right?
Starting point is 00:16:38 There's a lot of area there for getting injured, a lot of area there for, you know, something bad happening. But again, the Diamondbacks have done a proper job this offseason of preparing themselves for that, especially when he's, comes to pitching, right? We've been talking quite a bit about who is going to make the bullpen, who is going to make the starting rotation, not how are they going to fill these roles, right? So it's been more of a surplus of talent that Tori and his coaching staff have to kind of sort through and decide on who, you know, they're going to give those roles to. But Mike Hazen did discuss, obviously, the bullpen being one of his biggest question marks.
Starting point is 00:17:14 He also did talk about what his biggest questions are this season for the position players. This is what Mike Hazen had to say. Position player wise, you know, look, I think the biggest question for me is what can we build on from last year, more than anything else. Like the expectation that we're going to lead the league in runs is not realistic. But the things that we hold pretty dear in terms of what drives run scoring, I feel like we still represent a lot of those traits. And so I'm curious to see how we come out offensively too. So I think those are, you know, those are probably the two bigger areas, the bullpen and the in the lineup.
Starting point is 00:17:54 We know that the Diamondbacks aren't going to have the number one offense in baseball again, right? I think that's something that was a surprise, was a shock. And again, for those of us that watched every single game of the 162 regular season last year, we know that it's a little bit skewed because of the Diamondbacks having some wild games where they scored, you know, over 10 runs, over 15 runs. Like, yes, that is a big part of the reason why they were the number one offense. they didn't necessarily do it consistently throughout the season. However, they don't need the number one offense in baseball if their pitching staff and their bullpen can be better than bottom five like they were last season.
Starting point is 00:18:32 This is a topic we've discussed time and time again, but I think that's the expectation is the Diamondbacks know that their pitching staff is going to support this team better. They know that the starting pitching is going to support the bullpen more. Mike Hazen also discussed about, you know, that front end pitching like guys like beaks being added to the team better. this roster now having uh you know that impact where it's not necessarily a mop-up guy in those front-end roles it's not necessarily a guy that's going to let the game get out of control it's a guy that can come in and hold the game and give the diamond backs a chance to win so uh and i have a friend who i call beek so i'm going to have a real hard time with having a guy named jalen beaks on this team but i'll figure it out i will figure it out uh speaking of friends on the other side of this uh very
Starting point is 00:19:17 important break we're about to take i'm very excited to be joined by by my friend Nick Sutton, who has done some amazing baseball artwork and has some new artwork coming to tops. He's living the dream, folks. He's out here drawing baseball players, and he's very good at that, much better than I am, and he's getting to do it for a baseball card. So we're going to talk to Nick on the other side of this break. Don't you guys go anywhere?
Starting point is 00:19:40 You're watching the PH&X Diamondbacks podcast. Of course, a great place to watch this podcast or watch Sun's Games is at Spanato's Pizzeria, which is the place for Suns fans. Sons are getting hot, maybe as hot as Spanato's pizzas, but they're back, baby. We're back. They have a very, very, very difficult stretch here. But if they make it into the playing games, then they deserve it. So make sure to catch these games at Spanato's Pizza. They're hosting official watch parties with the Phoenix Sun's dancers.
Starting point is 00:20:10 And my guy, the gorilla is going to be over there. So stop by for your chance to win free Sun's tickets, gifts or tickets, and so much more. They'll have you play a game of horse, but they call it pizza, obvious reasons. And what's better than that? what's better than winning free tickets and maybe win free pizza for a year. So don't miss the chance to be part of the action. Mark your calendars. Get over to Spanados.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Get all the info on the watch parties and pizza basketball contest at Spanadospizzeria.com. Spanados, the official pizza of the Phoenix Suns, who are indeed back. All pro-shade concepts. Thank you to them for sponsoring our first segment, sponsoring the show, and sponsoring a better way of living in the outdoor sun. You saw what happened yesterday. 100 degrees got here just like that. The sun is indeed still trying to kill us. Make sure you find ways to stop it.
Starting point is 00:20:58 And all pro-shade concepts will help you do that. They'll help you extend your living areas outdoors so that you can enjoy this weather a little bit more with that sun beating down on you. They also have roll down patio shades which can block the sun and keep patios up to 20 degrees cooler. They can also replace and fix most older outdated patio shades
Starting point is 00:21:16 and motorized awning. So make sure to trust a business that's been in business for 20s. 20 years right here in the valley. They started by handmaking shades for their friends, and now they do it with excellent quality and much faster than they used to do it, obviously. Call 623-204-1476 or visit all-prochshadeconcepts.com now to schedule your free estimate. Get out there and protect yourself from the sun. All right. Well, like I said, I'm very excited for my guy, Nick Sutfin to be joining us.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Nick is an artist. Nick, what's up, buddy? Thank you so much for hopping on with me. Hey, happy to be here. I'm super stoked to talk about some baseball cards. Yes, sir. Well, you are an incredible artist. I've known you for a while. I've had a chance to, you made us some custom cards, which I showed on this show, and I still love and covet to this day. I didn't let anybody in the office steal those, by the way. Those are part of my personal collection now. But you sent me a message letting me know that you are now doing this incredible artwork for tops. And I was over the moon, man. I mean, I mean, obviously I knew how good of an artist you obviously were, but it's really cool getting a chance to see you live out. I think every baseball fan's dream. Yeah, it's cool. You know, there comes a point in your life, you know, if you play baseball where that ends. And so for me, it ended after high school.
Starting point is 00:22:39 And so to now be doing baseball stuff like, you know, vocationally is really, really cool. So it's nice to do it like an official capacity. I've already made it further in my autistic career than I did in my baseball career. So, hey, there we go. You know what, no, it's what life is about, right? Like pivoting and finding something not only that you're good at, but you're passionate about and that you enjoy doing. And that seems to be the case with this. How did you, I mean, I'm sure we could go down the path of how you got started in art,
Starting point is 00:23:09 but I'm sure that starts at a very young age. But what, how did you get to the point where you were in communication with Tops and what did they say about your artwork when you first showed it to them? Yeah, yeah. So the top submission process, at least because I've actually done some Star Wars work for them for the last couple of years. Oh, that was the first gig I did. Yeah, so I've been doing Star Wars for a couple of years now. And so it was just kind of, oh, yeah, there's some of those cards. Look at these things. These are amazing, man. Thank you. Yeah. So what you do is you just send in samples. And what I would do is I talk to some other artists who were already working for them and kind of pick their brains. they were super helpful in terms of, you know, kind of knowing who to contact or whatever. And they just had an email submission.
Starting point is 00:23:54 The first day of every month for, gosh, it was about three or four years. I would just send them another, you know, and send another submission of my portfolio. And then eventually, you know, just one day out of the blue, you just get an email and it's like, hey, we want you to draw Star Wars. And so that was cool. So I started doing that. And then the number one thing on the list was supposed to do baseball someday. I said, that's it. That's someone I want. So I remember last October, I finally got that email
Starting point is 00:24:21 just out of the blue. And then here I am. That's amazing. And I imagine that's a very, very good day when you get that email. I think we have some more of his artwork. I need to see all of it, Kevin. Let's throw some of that stuff up. Here's some of his baseball cards. Man, and like I said, I already had a chance to preview your work and see it personally. So I already knew you did some incredible stuff, but these, these are elite. And, uh, I, man, I can't say enough about how cool it is. Like I said, not only that you, you made these for us before, but then here you are doing it for Topps. What, uh, is there a chance that you get like a one of one card or something like that? Is there, uh, is there that in the future where it's like maybe your original
Starting point is 00:25:04 artwork or something like that? These are. Um, these, yeah, so I draw, top sends me, you know, I tell them I'm going to draw 30 cards. They send me 30. blank cards and then I draw on each of those individually and then those are put into packs they're not they're not duplicated they're not replicated they're not scanned by them like nothing they just take it straight from my package they throw it into a pack of cards so they're hard to get and they if you find them on the secondary market they're pricey because they're all one of one so that's amazing that is amazing so it yeah it's it's really cool and that's why I wanted to
Starting point is 00:25:39 kind of do this type of work in the first place was that it's it's so unique cool. Once I kind of discovered they were a thing about five or six years ago, I was like, I think that's what I want to do. So, um, so, yep, if you find one of my cards in the wild, you're the only one who has it. So they're not, they're not duplicated at all. They're really cool. That's so exciting, man. And Topps has done a great job. Like, I feel like baseball is more back than ever right now, which is why this impending doom of a lockout in 2026 makes me sick to my stomach. But that's like for another day. But I feel like Topps is a big part of, this like ever since the pandemic and card collecting and card breaks kind of came back so big like
Starting point is 00:26:21 i felt like they did an excellent job of writing that wave and giving people the chance to own original pieces like this uh in in in in a little card form a little tiny piece of artwork but just having something that is so unique so valuable and i just i don't remember you know card companies really doing this or maybe making it as publicized as it is now Yeah, they used to, like when they originally started doing them about 20 years ago, it was the first time I noticed them ever pop up. But it was like literally sketches. It was like a five-minute doodle that someone would do real quick.
Starting point is 00:26:55 Right. Or like an autograph, right, or something like that. Basically, yeah, a little, you know, just a slight upgrade from that. It's just these quick little pencil sketches that somebody would take five minutes and just, and then it's now turned into this full-blown art form that people are into doing. and it's a ton of fun for me. Like when I first started drawing, I was pursuing comic books. And what I realized was that I would spend days just drawing pages of people in a coffee shop,
Starting point is 00:27:22 just having a conversation. And it was boring as hell to do that. It's like you're sitting at a desk for eight hours a day, just like, this is boring. But the sketch card thing, you know, they usually take me just a few hours, you know, five or six hours to do one. So I can draw something fun and exciting. And then five or six hours later I can move on to something else. And so every day it's something new.
Starting point is 00:27:45 And that's part of why I love about it. Well, I also know you're a snake's fan, right? That's the most important part here. Oh, yeah. Give me your thoughts on this season. I mean, I know I've already talked to Ryan Thompson last week and got his thoughts on it. And he said he might be more excited than the fans for this particular team and how much potential they have. But, I mean, do you remember a time as a fan where it was kind of this exciting on opening day to be watching the Diamondbacks?
Starting point is 00:28:12 play baseball? I mean, last year was pretty exciting too, but then it's like all those injuries, all those injuries coming out the World Series and then the injury bug just bit us right away and it was like, ugh, and then it was a dredge for a while. So we kind of got the fun sucked out of us right away. So, but no, this is definitely up there in terms of excitement on opening days. I'm excited every year on opening day. Even in 2022, I was excited for opening day after following 21.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Just kind of like baseball that much. But this year especially, yeah, the team just looks really good. I don't, you know, it's really well-rounded, it seems like. I mean, obviously there's things you'd like to see. But realistically, this is one of the most well-rounded teams, I think, that I've seen them put together. I agree with you. I agree with you.
Starting point is 00:28:58 Is there a favorite Diamondback you enjoy drawing? Is there somebody that has become like you do a great job and you really enjoy actually kind of putting them down? Yeah, yeah. So, I mean, I don't have any in here because I wasn't allowed to draw retired players, but Randy Johnson is the guy. Oh, yeah. He just has such an interesting thing. He does, right? So he is, he does.
Starting point is 00:29:25 He has a lot, like, you know, I don't know, he just has a lot of unique creatures. So he's like a bad guy from a Bugs Bunny cartoon. Do you know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. Uh-huh. And so he's just be so interesting. So that's the number one guy.
Starting point is 00:29:40 but another guy that I currently like to draw, Catelle Marte is a ton of fun to draw. Because he also has the cool hair. And also, like, people of color are really fun to draw. They just said there's so many beautiful tones in the skin that, especially just like drawing. Yeah, African-American people is super fun for me. I have a friend that says the same thing for photography, too, right?
Starting point is 00:30:04 Like a big fan of, you know, again, highlighting the different color and just everything, all of the beauty in it, right? Like it's amazing. It's amazing thing from artistic perspective to hear. But yeah, no, that's, that's amazing. And Ina got you. She knew you were going to say, Marte. I imagine that Lord is there with his purple hair too.
Starting point is 00:30:23 Kind of just a little fun to draw. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Like the hair is always a good time. Because you can, it's one of those, there's a few, there's not shortcuts, but they're like almost like cheap of things that look really, really tough to draw, but are actually really easy. So like if you see like I have a few of them that I've done where you can see like the reflection in the in the sunglasses.
Starting point is 00:30:45 Yeah, that's cool. It's cool. It's cool, but it's not nearly as hard as just drawing a good set of eyes. I don't think. Right. Right. So, so so that's one of those cheats, I guess. But yeah, so it's Lurtis's hair is another one of those things that like it doesn't take a ton to make it look really, really cool.
Starting point is 00:31:07 So that's another one. I like him. He's got a dynamic look to him. Candice in the chat has a request. She says, I was just about to say, draw him hitting the bird meeting Randy Johnson. So that happened on my birthday,
Starting point is 00:31:22 by the way, when it happened. So that was my favorite gift of all time. Right. It's the gift that keeps on giving because every year, like it's so funny. Like I'm the Diamondback guy.
Starting point is 00:31:33 I'm the Randy Johnson guy to everybody I know. And so like every year on social media, I just get blown up every year with all of the reminders of the anniversary of that every year. And so I was able to put it together this year. That was your birthday. I didn't put it together before. But this year I did. That's awesome, man.
Starting point is 00:31:48 Well, hey, I appreciate you joining me. I look forward to searching for your cards in every top spec. I can. Where can everybody follow you and see your work more? Yeah, the easiest best place to get me is Instagram. Just Nick Sutton, art. And you can see all my sketch cards. That's the easiest.
Starting point is 00:32:05 This is one I use the most. I mean, I have X and I have Facebook and stuff, but Instagram is such a visual platform that it lends itself to that really easily. So that's the one the most. It's perfect for you, man. It's perfect. Well, hey, I appreciate you. I appreciate your artwork.
Starting point is 00:32:19 And I'm glad that this career worked out for you, even though the baseball one didn't. Right, exactly. I'll take it. It's great. I get to be home all the time. It's great. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:32:29 You're not on the road for an 81 day. Exactly. And if I was still playing baseball, I wouldn't still be playing baseball. I'm too old. Like, you know, I age now, you know, I'd be Max Scher. You know, I'd be like, this guy's still playing? No, I wouldn't still play. My day, my playing days are behind me too. The journey says need a drawing of Alec planning the flag at the bank. Now we're talking. Now we're talking. Yeah. Put that one, read that one down. Yeah, yeah. I'm like a mental note of that
Starting point is 00:32:55 one. Well, hey, I appreciate you. I appreciate your artwork. You sent us and I appreciate you sharing it with the world, man. Thank you so much for stopping by. Yeah, absolutely. Thanks so much for having me, guys. All right, brother. I'll see you. Well, I wish I could draw half as good as he can, but again, a great artist. Make sure to follow him on Instagram at Nick Sutton Art. And yeah, really appreciative. Really appreciative to have someone like him making baseball cards even more fun than they already are. Well, on the other side of this break, we have some more to talk about.
Starting point is 00:33:25 And that more that we have to talk about is the Diamondbacks. We'll be airing 10 regular season games on free TV on our friends over at Channel 12, just right across the street from us. And we're going to be talking about all the details, including what games you can expect to see on Channel 12 this year. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PHNX Diamondback Show. Well, like I said, my playing days are long behind me,
Starting point is 00:33:51 and that means that I have a lot of aches and pains. Now, I will say, I've talked about all the gummies I eat on here, but none might be as good at giving me a good night's sleep as corn, red heaps. They have their USDA organic CBD gummies. And again, I know, You might hear CBD. You might think it's not as effective. You might not think you get the same relaxation that you get wrong.
Starting point is 00:34:13 Check these out. They are amazing. They're the highest quality, full spectrum gummies on the market. They help with stress relief, better recovery, and improve sleep. And to be honest, all three of those things tie together. You're not getting a good night's sleep. You're not recovering. And you're going to be stressed out.
Starting point is 00:34:28 You're not going to be at your best. So make sure you try out their CBD gummies. Again, they are made from flour only. They are third party lab tested for potency, turpines and contaminants, and that's very important, again, with all of the other products available on the market. And they offer free shipping and back all products with their 30-day better life guarantee. Of course, I honestly have had some of the best sleep I've ever had, thanks to our friends at Cornbread Hemp. If you want to give them a try, they're offering PHNX listeners

Well, this is a great way to celebrate the fact that we will be watching Arizona Diamondbacks games for free this year on Channel 12. our friends across the street, like I said. D-backs will air 10 regular season games on Channel 12 this season. The full lineup of games include April 25th versus the Braves, May 9th versus the Dodgers, May 30th versus the Nationals, June 27th versus the Marlins.
Starting point is 00:37:21 July 4th game is going to be free. The July 4th game is going to be free, and it's going to be versus the Royals. We have a July 18th game versus this guy, large intimates, Cardinals. We got August 8th versus the Rockies, August 22nd versus the Reds, September 5th versus the Red Sox, and September 19th versus the Phillies. There are some great games in there. Braves, Dodgers, Phillies, Red Sox all in there. The Cardinals also for this guy makes him very happy. Most importantly, they came through with their promise here. We heard about the Diamondbacks. We heard that they were going to be airing free games. We didn't know how many. We didn't know if it was going to come to fruition. this season, but Derek Hall kind of made that promise. He said that they want to get more games on television for more people to be watching. Is this enough games, though?
Starting point is 00:38:12 Does 10 games move the needle for you? I would love to hear from you guys in the chat. Candice says definitely going to bring in more fans being on local TV. She's never wrong. That's for sure. Sean says, is Channel 12 still NBC out there? Yes, it's Tegna, by the way, who we actually partnered together with. So that officially
Starting point is 00:38:34 makes me a broadcast partner. And that means that you're going to have a Derek Montia simulcast is what you're going to have over there for those 10 games. No, but we are going to be partnering together. My guy, Cam Cox, sure is going to be greatly involved with that. And it's just
Starting point is 00:38:50 a great chance to, again, increase viewership, increase the ability for people to see baseball games. And, you know, increase this fan base. We have grown this community. quite a bit. It's been exciting. Over the time that we have done this show, considering that we started this show in 2021 at the tail end of one of the worst seasons in Diamondbacks history,
Starting point is 00:39:14 right? Since that point, it has been a thrill to watch the Diamondbacks community grow. It's been a thrill to be a small part of it, and it's been a thrill to see so many Diamondbacks fans just be true, diehard, you know, snake fans, right? That's snake, stick aficionados, as we call you guys on this but this has been, RA says it's better than zero and you're right. I think that's the big thing. Like I do feel like I want more. Am I being selfish, Kev?
Starting point is 00:39:41 Do I, do I want? I mean, I just don't know. Does 10 move the needle for you? Yeah, I mean, 10 literally is better than zero. That's kind of the mindset I take on it. I mean, especially with all the different services you have to use to watch any sporting league. Oh, don't even get me start on the Roku and all the other stuff, right?
Starting point is 00:39:58 I'll take as many free games as I can get as possible. I bought a Roku TV just so I don't have to go through that anymore because I needed Roku in my life. I needed baseball in my life. I need to be able to watch all the games as much as possible. So, but yeah, I mean, this is, I think overall this is a great move for the Diamondbacks during a period of time where right now they need some public support considering the things that they're trying to do with this house bill and improve Chase Field. And again, they've been pretty savvy about, you know, trying to fill that building up, right? that's one of the keys. It's the reason why they have that ballpark pass,
Starting point is 00:40:33 which again is the cheapest season ticket in all of baseball and all of sports, probably if you consider the per game cost, right? But it's just another way to bring people to the Diamondbacks, bring the Diamondbacks to people and again, increase this, you know, increase the fans. Sharon says, will those free games still be on Diamondbacks TV channels on Cox? I don't believe so, but I don't know for sure. So I can get a clarification for you on that, Sharon, and see if that's the case. Chances are, though, it's kind of like the Roku games.
Starting point is 00:41:07 Like when the Diamondbacks have a game on Roku or Apple TV, they do not have that game airing on the typical Cox or DirecTV channels. So there's a good chance that, you know, that that's the case. But 12 News reaches approximately 1.59 million television households across the market. So I think that's the big key here. The journey in the chat says, I think all local sports should be available on local channels. I understand having to pay for out of market. Like I do watch DeBex games here in Ohio, but I can't believe needing to pay for local.
Starting point is 00:41:42 And then he said, I may have said local one too many times. Yeah, it's kind of a nonsense word after reading it that many times. I don't even know what it means anymore. But you're absolutely right. I mean, I think that we, me, not we, because most of you are far, far younger than I am. But I do think that there is a generation of folks that, like myself, that grew up on on sporting events being free. Right. And I mean, even even in the case of like larger networks like ESPN or TNT airing games at one point, it was more of a bigger game, like more of a one-off. And now that seems to be the norm.
Starting point is 00:42:16 You can't typically watch your favorite team on free TV. I mean, God bless Matt Ishbia and the sons for doing what they did and getting that deal and bringing our sons. to free television, but kind of spoils us, right? Now, now because he did that, we all want every owner for every sport to do it. It's understandable, but it's also part of the fact that, you know, the content itself is what's so valuable. And in this case, the content is games and trying to make some sort of revenue off of, you know, off of television deals and off of everything, right? Back in the day, good old sponsorship dollars did so much of the work, but that's not the case anymore. So again, I do agree with the concept of 10 is better than zero.
Starting point is 00:43:00 I just think I would have liked to see out of 162 game season, maybe a little bit more, maybe 20 games. But I'll take this for now. And again, it's just good that it helps grow not only the game of baseball, but it grows the fan base for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And that's important to all of us, right? Like if you're a fan of this team, you want more people to be a fan. It does make parking kind of suck. It does make getting tickets a little more expensive, but overall it improves the experience. And it helps the franchise sustain a certain level of excellence that they need to sustain in order to compete in the National League West.
Starting point is 00:43:34 Look at what's going on with the Colorado Rockies. It is not a matter of that building not being filled with people because it is filled all the time. It is a matter of like seemingly nobody caring about that team even though they go to that ballpark to watch games. So, you know, having people care, it's a big part of it. and introducing it to 1.59 estimated million households that might not normally watch Diamondbacks game or might not have the ability to watch, you know, a subscription or pay TV is a big deal.
Starting point is 00:44:02 Especially in today's day and age, right? With streaming, like it was far less common for people. Like people mostly had cable and such back in the day, but a lot of people have cut the cord. They've done that because they are tired of paying the prices that they pay for things that they don't really want to watch. You know, it's easier to just subscribe. to the streaming services that provide you
Starting point is 00:44:21 with the content that you do. Unfortunately, as much as I've thought about doing that, it's always these Diamondbacks that bring me back to pay either a subscription for their D-backs.tv or or for DirecTV or Cox of some kind because I cannot, I cannot go without
Starting point is 00:44:37 my Diamondbacks. I really can't. Let's see, who do we got in the chat? Sharon says, I live in Tucson, so I'm just curious if I could watch them. I think if it's not impacted by the Tegna Channel 12 thing, then there's a good chance that it might still be available to you on whatever way you currently watch it. So, but again, that's a great question.
Starting point is 00:44:56 One, I don't have the answer to back when I was a trainer in corporate America, I would tell you, I'm going to put that on the parking lot and then write it down on the board. So I will write that down and get you an answer for it. Candice complains that parking is too expensive and she's not wrong. I would not cover these games if they made me pay for parking. I have no problem saying that. I would do it from the comfort of my home. Cricket Commission says, I'll be there for Sunday's game.
Starting point is 00:45:17 go Cubs, get out. Get out. Get out. This is the wrong podcast for you, sir. No, I'm just joking. All are welcome, especially BC, who hasn't come in here yet on this episode to tell us, Go Dodgers. And I'm worried about him. I think he might be hurt or maybe he fell in a well or something.
Starting point is 00:45:34 So make sure to check on BC for me and make sure he's okay. But on the other side of this break, B.C. isn't the only person we're looking for. Where are our City Connect jersey? I'm going to yell at it because today is the last day. Oh, technically of spring training, the regular season starts tomorrow, and other promises were made. Not just about free games airing on TV, but I was promised to City Connect Jersey. Give me my ugly City Connect jersey.
Starting point is 00:46:03 I know it's going to piss me off in some way. So show it to me, bring it to me. We're going to talk about it on the other side of this break. Don't go anywhere. So I appreciate you acknowledging that. I was sitting with Jack Summers, my buddy from Sports Illustrated, and Jody Jackson walked by, looked at the
Starting point is 00:48:52 two of us, and complimented Jack's plain purple shirt and did not say a word to me about mine, and I'm still not over it. But speaking of other clothing-related tragedies and things I'm mad about, where are my City Connect jerseys? We just saw a leak today that San Francisco
Starting point is 00:49:09 has some terrible, horrible, horrible, ugly city connect jerseys. The other ones are bad. They're all bad. The new Washington national ones are terrible compared to their original city connect jersey. And I don't know. I don't think that the Serbientish jersey set the bar very high.
Starting point is 00:49:24 So are we going to see a worst version of a jersey than that one? I will say that for some of you that have been wanting something different, it does appear that many of the jerseys are, the new city connect jerseys are drastically different than the first ones. I just don't think that's going to be the case. I think we're still getting Serpientis. I think we're getting purple. I think we're getting teal.
Starting point is 00:49:46 But then what I also think is it's not going to be that simple. I don't think it's going to be the Arizona purple where it was cool and just purple. And they're going to put crap on it. There's going to be gradient or something. There's going to be whatever. They're going to try to do a weird pattern on it or texture, snake skin. Something like that is coming. And it's going to be very upsetting.
Starting point is 00:50:06 But more importantly, we were originally promised that these. jerseys we're going to drop before the end of spring training and that time has come and gone. We officially have no word on when those are going to happen, but we do have a date on when the Diamondbacks are supposed to wear those jerseys. So at the very least, the Diamondbacks have that set, I guess. I don't know. Again, where are my jerseys, Kevin? Do you know?
Starting point is 00:50:36 And are they going to be gradient? How bad are they going to be? I just get mad now before I even see them. I think that's the point. Derek, if there is a gradient on these jerseys, I think we should have a damn riot. Like, there's going to be.
Starting point is 00:50:50 I hate keep gradients away from my jerseys, man. I don't. J.M. says it in the chat. Oh, the gradient. Yeah. With you. Gross. Well,
Starting point is 00:51:00 keep it out of my jersey. I mean, I think we did a bad job. We probably should have had a picture of that new San Francisco Giants jersey, but I don't really feel like we need it. I think that. I think you can believe me when I say that they're bad. Kevin's going to look it up, but I don't think that we should.
Starting point is 00:51:17 And there's just a lot of things that I don't like about this. The journey says, I think they're going to make it purple. And then when all the rumors came out about purple and Nike saw all the hype, they had to postpone the release to make them purple. Oh. So you're theorizing that basically the feedback was so specific. I like that. Maybe. Maybe people really just wanted the Diamondbacks jerseys to be purple. And they decided not to. I do know I was told at one point that the idea that was being kicked around was that they were going to do the old black uniform. And I think that would have been fire. I think that there might have been a missed opportunity in regards to that. Would you prefer purple, Kevin? Or would you prefer?
Starting point is 00:52:09 for, I know you're not necessarily a diehard snakes man, but I've made you one. I'm making you one. I'm in the process. This season's going to happen. What color do you want for the, for the Serbianthus jersey? Not purple, not gradient.
Starting point is 00:52:22 You don't want purple? I mean, if they do it right, yeah, we had this conversation a couple weeks ago, like where I feel like if the debacks do this, I feel like they're not going to do it correctly. And I feel like it's not going to look the way that we hope that it might look if they go for like a throwback. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:52:39 that's why I said a couple weeks ago. You either go full modern or you go full throwback and mixing the two. I feel like it rarely works with like the style of jersey they want to do with the city connect. Like with the printing of the jerseys now, there's not even stitching. It's all just like scanned on. It's gross. Sean was asking which black one though, the A or the Arizona. My understanding was it was the one that said diamond backs across that.
Starting point is 00:53:02 And who says don't we have a black jersey? It's a good point. I mean, black wouldn't really feel that drastically different. And the Diamondbacks black jersey is the best jersey in my opinion. That is my opinion. But Candace says purple pinstripes would be the dream. Do you mean white with purple pinstripes or purple with black pinstripes or purple with black and stupid gray and gradient?
Starting point is 00:53:20 What do you want? There's going to be some stupid thing that may. It's going to be perfect except for one thing. All right. So I did find what I was talking about. An ESPN article did detail that the second set of city connect uniforms would be being released. It was going to be in this order. and it has been so far.
Starting point is 00:53:39 Houston Astros were first Washington Nationals, which was to be worn for the first time on March 29th. The San Francisco Giants were scheduled to be next. They're scheduled to wear their city connect jerseys for the first time on April 8th. The Rockies are getting a new city connect jerseys. They are scheduled to wear theirs on April 18th. These are the dates that they are scheduled to first wear them
Starting point is 00:54:02 and not necessarily unveil them. White Sox May 2nd. Marlins, May 3rd, White Sox, still probably one of the greats, the south side one. Miami Marlins will get a new one on May 3rd, or that's when they will be wearing it. And according to this, the Arizona Diamondbacks will be wearing their City Connect jersey for the first time on May 9th. So don't know exactly how that's going to, if that's going to be the case or when we're going to see them debut. But at least we have notification here that they should be wearing them on May 9th. so we have we have that much time for them to debut them but Sean says the Astros one's one is actually cool
Starting point is 00:54:42 I do like the Astros one I do think the star should be on the other side but then it would probably make it say Astros and they were going for more of a Stroes thing I do believe though that the Astros one is an improvement on the Space City um mostly because Space City was lame but I don't mind the Houston Astros and their whole little obsession with NASA in space like it's fine it's cute it goes with it and orbit is one of the best mascots, if not the best mascot in all the baseball. So sorry, Baxter. I know we're like this, but if I'm being honest, I'm being honest, right? I can't just go with my favorites, who my heart says. But I can't wait for tomorrow. Starting point is 00:56:44 the holiday theme. It kind of feels like the night before. Yeah, the night before, yeah. You know, like Tori said, right? The night before Christmas on the first day of summer.
Starting point is 00:56:52 Exactly. Isn't that not what he said? Like, it's the first day of summer and we're, I don't know. His analogies are lost on me all the time. But can't wait to see him manage a baseball team this season. Can't wait to watch this team.

Fireworks, flyover, baseball, hot dogs. It's the best. It's the best. Actually, my favorite thing is the opening day cake in the press box. I'm going to be digging into that for sure.
