I don't know.
I don't like that.
I don't like that.
Welcome in to the P.HNX.
D.Backs podcast right here on PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia,
occasionally known as an outlaw from Justice.
I don't know what that music is,
but I think I kind of love it.
But I don't love the results of today's game.
I don't love it at all.
I know you don't love it.
I know you don't love it.
It means bad things happen.
You are, yeah, that's that music.
We're going to want to hate that music as this season rolls on.
We want that other song back.
But of course, that voice,
heard. It's not the voice of God. It's the voice of the people's producer, the one and only
Damon Dog. He is hanging out with Jesse Jr. because he is understandably very sad after
today's loss, which could be, it could be bigger than just a game that they lost. It could
be bigger than a series loss. It could mean that they potentially might lose Raldo Podomo for
some time. No information has been passed along to me at all yet. This is purely overreaction
right now. Of course, we will actually have a real update from the one and only Thunderstick,
Jesse Friedman, here from the clubhouse shortly. So hopefully he has some good news for us.
Like I said, what did it cost? Everything. I mean, what a game, right? Like, that game had everything.
What a chaotic ending once we got into extra innings. Tori Lovelo might have outmanaged
himself a little bit in this game, maybe overmanaged a little too much. But the Diamondbacks do lose an 11
inning by a score, what was the final score?
Six to five was what ended up being, I think.
I don't even know at this point.
But it wasn't a great game.
You know, I've lost track now at this point because that crazy-ass game went all sorts of directions
that we didn't know where it was going to go.
But I did want to welcome you all in to this show that's presented by Factor Meal Kits.
Head to FactorMeals.com slash PHNXD Backs-F50 and use code PHNXDBax50 to get 50

A factor powered me today through this loss with a delicious roasted chicken meal that was very,
very good, very healthy, but still does not help me overcome the loss.
The Diamondbacks lose the series, two games to one.
Although based on the numbers that we'll see here during the count, you will see,
does not look like the Diamondbacks lost the series.
Of course, the thing that it might have cost them, though, is the Diamondbacks starting shortstop,
Jerry P
this guy over here
distraught
I mean the lost music was necessary
guys because
how else are we going to get over
this catastrophic news
of Peraldo Pardomo pulling up
on that
10th inning? He didn't even want to do this show
at that point and I understand
I almost quit there was Jacob had to talk me out of it
he did he was like why even
work in sports anymore
what's the point
Perdom why do we even
even care. He was a key part once again
of a rally, right? He was
a key part of the rally there in the 10th inning.
Yankees made a costly error
allowing Perdomo to be
on second base on what would have been
the second out of the inning. Maybe
he should have just gotten out. Maybe he should
have just gotten out. What was the point of any of this?
But he did
appear to kind of
come up, tweak his knee
when rounding first base to go to second. He was
eventually replaced by Jake McCarthy.
So again, hopefully we'll
get an update here from Jesse shortly and hopefully that update will be a good one. He did walk
off the field and did look okay. Like he didn't hobble off the field. Was I overthinking
the way that he looked like coming off? To be honest, I also, I actually wasn't all that
concerned in the first place. Like I didn't, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I don't think
he's going to be out that much. Maybe, I mean, Alex was kind of similar and he's on the 10 day I.O.
So I could see a similar situation happening. But I don't think.
think that it's going to cost us per domo for too long.
It's just, it was just an unfortunate situation that's compounded by the loss.
The Diamondbacks did do a good job of coming back there and answering after Kevin
Ginkle gave up in the first pitch of extra innings, a home run that gave the Yankees
a two run lead.
Diamondbacks did battle back there in extra innings.
This was just a weird game.
The offense was very inconsistent in this series, very up and down.
Obviously, there was a huge game to today.
both starting pitchers had an excellent outing.
Merrill Kelly was very, very good for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
It's just, it was just like I said, like a confusing game where both pitchers,
Carlos Rodon was excellent.
And the only guy that could really get to him was the one and only Blaze Alexander.
Have yourself a series, young man, by the way.
The Diamondbacks may end up needing Blaze more than they thought that they were going to
here with the situation with Pordomo.
So it once again shows how this depth.
is advantageous.
Things that were a problem at one point kind of seemed to solve themselves, or at least
you can see why the Diamondbacks might have not wanted Blaze, you know, sitting and only,
you know, playing every once in a while when now they need him potentially to be a regular
everyday player on the infield.
But yeah, a lot of you were saying it in the chat.
I don't disagree with you guys.
This was, there was some baffling managerial decisions in this game.
including removing
uh removing uh removing blaze alexander for chase jace peterson uh not not did not go over well here
at p h nx h q i'm still waiting for jace peterson's first competitive swing in a diamondbacks
uniform i'm waiting for it i mean first one he's been on the team for how long derrick
since the trade deadline last year i've seen a grand total of this many competitive swings out
of that guy yeah does he want to provide anything to this to this ball club i would love i would love i
would love it. I just, I don't, I don't know. I mean, again, there's just that the team ends up not
having position players in order to have someone taken at bat there in the bottom of,
above the 11th. And we see Scott McGuff try to step up and be a hero. This game was wild.
It was all over place. Kattel ended up having to play shortstop there late in the game.
And again, some of the overmanaging ended up costing the team late when it comes to
extra innings, right?
Two BMC says my gut says he's going to be okay.
Everybody, everybody pulls leg muscles from time to time.
I hope that's the case.
I think we were just concerned with where he was grabbing the side of his knee that he
was kind of grabbing on is not a great area.
But hopefully that's the case.
I think someone else said he's 23 years old and he'll bounce back.
I don't know what that's like to bounce back from injuries.
I'm my, those days would be bouncing back from injuries or over.
If I were to do that to my leg, I just wouldn't be.
to run anymore maybe you would walk do you get to a point in life where like if you have an injury it
just is there for the rest of forever i've had a sprained angle for 23 years damon yeah i think that that
answers that question um for sure uh i just i have a i have a i have a pinch nerve in my right
shoulder that just it's just there every night that's the way it is that i live with injuries but
i play through them and hopefully prodomo can as well we don't know uh how big that loss is going to be
But again, you have to be a little comforted by the fact that the Diamondbacks do have Blaze on the roster and can plug him in there at shortstop.
He was three for five in the series.
He had his first home run in this game off of Carlos Rodon, which was not easy to do.
So a lot of credit there, two RBI in this series and a walk.
So a great, again, another great series for Blaze Alexander.
And he continues to show why Tori Lavello has that trust in him.
the rest of the offense there's some concerns i think the biggest concern i know a lot of you are
concerned about corbin carroll corbin carroll still hit a double today he ended up having that single
in the 10th uh that he beat out that chopper uh and i mean he did get caught stealing uh third once he got
on early in the game with the double he just doesn't seem very sharp at times i think corbin will
will will get locked in and i feel like he's very close to being there the more baffling thing to me and i
think the more concerning part in regards to the series is Lordus Gurriel, who was the National
League player of the year, going 0 for 13 with a walk in this series. And I don't really know
how someone completely drops off like that, but that's why Jesse and I have discussed in the past
Lordus being a very streaky hitter. In the end, the averages all play out for him to still be a very
good baseball player. But his, you know, the good times come in bunches and the bad times also
coming bunches and he was not very, he was not very good in this series at all.
The Diamondbacks almost made up for him though.
His absence was almost made up by guys like Catelle Marte who Catell once again.
He continues to be the guy for this team two for five today, but he did have a home run.
He had a double and that double, the leadoff double was hit number 1,000 in his career.
And we have gotten the opportunity to see so many of those right here.
in Arizona. It's been tremendous to watch his career. And Kattel remains consistent for this team.
Blaze, though, Blaze is, Blaze was very good. A couple of other guys very good for this team.
Ehueño Suarez continues to swing at some bad stuff. But Jesse and I were talking that
so far he's been a more well-rounded hitter than we expected to be. So hopefully A. Hueneo can
keep that up. Gino's great guy, great hair, amazing hair. Merrill Kelly, still can't
get much run support, but he was the mainstay once again today. He went seven innings,
gave up five hits, two more runs, one walk, four strikeouts. Like, that's what you're going
to get out of Merrill. That's why he's so good. It's not flashy with the four strikeouts,
but it's consistent. He is able to get himself out of jams. And Merrill is just,
Merrill's just Merrill. His slider was working today. Since 2022, his 19 starts with seven
innings are more pitched with two or fewer runs allowed are tied for sixth most with his teammate
Zach Gowan. So we got we got some dogs in that starting rotation for sure and some dogs
that are consistent. But what a mess the end of this game ended up being. I can't believe
that the most crucial at bat of today's game came down to Scott McGuff, who obviously is not
going to make the cut for the international sex and ballast. That's a given based on
the runs that he allowed in his performance.
The bullpen that was very good for this team up to this point in this series
was not very good today.
Again, suck to see Kevin Ginkle go out there.
First pitch thrown, he allows that home run.
Scott McGuff also was not very good as well.
Josh in the comments that he responded well after the judge home run to, he absolutely did.
At times, I think that's the mainstay part of that nickname is.
that like yeah I get it he goes out there you know you can always trust him to be the one that
if you're on a losing streak or whatever can can be the stopgap he can always be that guy that
make sure that that you know the bleeding stops but there's something to be said about merrill also
just being able to come back from you know something like that that home run was a monster it went
at the pool the ovation at chase field not to get off on this tangent again like i did last night
was absurd um i think that only in the play
playoffs last year do I remember being present for that kind of roar from the crowd like the
amount of Yankee fans which again I will I will be a little bit more understanding about this and
I'm sure some of you can as well even though you don't want to be the Yankees only come to town
rarely right they come here once every two years right now with the way the schedule is and prior to
this it was even less frequent so it's understandable for Yankee fans here in the valley that live
here to want to come out see their team. It's also understandable for there to be so many Yankee fans.
They've won so many damn world series and they've been around for so long that people have
rooted for them for generations. But oh man, that hurt my heart. It hurt my heart.
You're being way too nice. I'm just trying to be understanding. I'm trying to be understanding
because it's honest, right? Like I've said that in the past that the hardest thing for Diamondbacks
fans is the fact that generations of fans have rooted for other franchises that have been around for years.
The Diamondbacks, this guy right here, I remember being in high school when we were talking about the Diamondbacks name being lame, but that's a whole other thing.
I don't want to get into that.
The Diamondbacks name is sick.
Well, I mean, we were.
Bad take.
We were high school kids.
You can say it's a bad take, but we just instantly went to the fact they were calling them to debacks and how easy that low hanging fruit was.
Now, I will say, though, that this team has done a great job in its short time of getting people excited about it.
It's just, you know, again, I think the thing is to hear that, to hear that, you know, sad,
to hear that, that roar from the crowd, David, it hurt me.
It hurt my soul.
It cut me deep.
I mean, just everybody who's the Yankees fan from Arizona should be ashamed to themselves.
That's all I have to say.
He's not wrong about that.
That I completely agree with.
Shame, shame.
Gert Jr. is in the chat.
That's an honor.
Glad to see you here.
He said, I just got off work and I'm late.
Did we win?
I don't know.
Unless you're somebody that's normally here in the Diamondbacks,
chat and you're just logged into your burner by accident.
It's great to see you, Gertr, Jr., big fan of your dad.
Okay, I want to give my Kingsnake.
It's hard to think of somebody to give it to, but I think most of you will agree that
the guy that deserves it in this series is Blake, Blaze Alexander.
Blaze Alexander was fantastic, but also first Major League home run.
Cotell Marte obviously could have also been Our King Snake for the fact that, you know,
there is a thousand hits is is is quite the achievement but um i'm sorry set harbour i don't i don't
i don't mean i'm not saying the diamondbacks name is lame i am saying the dbacks name is lame i've
never really liked that never been a huge band but uh i love our diamondbacks and i love our snakes
uh and i i get it i know it's fine uh you can you can shame me and be disappointed in me being
your i guess mayoral representation but uh blaze was fantastic uh it continues to be a spark for this team
And right now it would appear that it's not really a fluke thing.
Like we saw Blaze have a tremendous amount of success in Reno and his entire time in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.
It's always been the question of where was he going to play?
How was he going to factor in at a major league level?
It always felt like he was going to be blocked.
And now given the opportunity, he's absolutely excelling.
And I think that that's something that is very exciting.
and again with the Geraldo Perdomo situation right now,
hopefully he is just,
uh,
he is just a small,
it's just a small time missed,
but I am very much looking forward to,
uh,
seeing more of Blaze Alexander,
uh,
this season.
I think that this team believes in him and I think it's for a good reason.
Uh,
I mean,
this team believes in him,
but then we sub them out for Jace fucking Peterson in a,
in a crucial A-B.
It's shocking.
What I like,
like,
like,
What managerial move by Tori Lavello today disappointed you the most?
Is it that one?
Easily.
Is it the fact that they got themselves into a situation where with the game on the line,
they had to have Scott McGuff?
Those are partially, they kind of coincide with each other.
They coincide to each other.
If you don't unnecessarily just take out a player who's hitting the ball well,
who's seeing the baseball well, has quality A-Bs on a regular basis for a guy who has literally
contributed nothing to this franchise in basically a year of,
play. Like, I don't, that, that's the reason that we don't have anybody to take off the bench for
Scott McGuff in that moment. But that all being said, Jace Peterson would have just gone up there
and swung at balls, you know, eight inches out of the strike zone if he was, if he was going up there
for Scott McGuff in that moment anyways. Yeah. And I think that you got a, most of the time,
Tori feels like he's a bit more conservative on pulling those moves. I thought that going to
Jace didn't really make sense.
You know, like, I get you're trying to go, you know, with the matchup that makes,
you know, more sense on paper.
But you have a kid that's unbelievably hot right now versus a player that really hasn't done
much to show you that he was going to contribute, contribute in this situation.
So I, my initial thought was that maybe he mixed up Peterson and Peterson again.
That was my initial thought.
I was like maybe the big gaff here is that once again he meant Peterson
but someone thought he meant Peterson I don't know
but yeah definitely can put this one on Tori
with how close the team kept it
and how those managerial moves ended up costing them in extra innings
it'll be interesting to hear what he has to say
I don't doubt that he doesn't take responsibility for this
a bit himself considering the situation that the team ended up getting themselves
into in extra innings of course we do appreciate
you guys for being here in the PHNX Sports YouTube channel right now. Oh yeah. Josh,
you're absolutely right. The balls eight inches outside the strike zone are strike. So that was also
a huge factor. I feel like I could, you know, like it's talk about low hanging fruit. It's
low hanging fruit at times to blame the umpire. But my God, I feel like we've seen some very bad
umpiring so far this season. Like in a very short amount of time. Am I wrong? Like, I don't know.
I don't know. Do they come out of the gate crisp or they usually off their
game and need to get to regular season four, David, what's going on here?
They're never great, are they?
No, because they're umpires.
That's why we hate them.
We can't stand them.
They're miserable people.
They hope all the bad things happen.
That's the one thing about like robot umpires is like, then, then like what we, who can
we blame?
It's easy to just be like, oh, it's, but let me ask you this.
Do you watch tennis?
I, uh, I do set from time to time.
Right?
It's fun.
It's exciting.
I'm a tennis guy.
Do you, how exciting does it when they go to the camera that shows where the ball landed?
How exciting is that?
Yeah.
The replay camera?
Fair enough.
Do you get mad at the replay camera and say the replay camera's wrong?
No, because it's a fucking robot.
It's infallible.
It knows exactly where the ball went.
So none of us can question it.
And we all go, yes, all hail the magic replay camera.
That last call was so bad.
We could have that in baseball.
We could have the strike zone and just fucking dab it.
Let Scott McGuff cook, man.
Let, let McGuff swing the bat and let him in the game like that.
That's another thing.
As an umpire, come on.
You didn't see Scott McGuff up there.
and think, boy, these guys are screwed and maybe think, I'm going to give them a little bit more.
I'm going to give them a little bit smaller.
That's crazy.
You know, that's crazy.
Yeah, let the guy hit the ball.
I don't know the guy hit the ball.
Anyway, uh, the umpires might not get ball, but all of you here in the chat definitely do.
We thank you guys for being here.

We do have the numbers from the series. So of course, let's take a look.
at those now because again things things don't look like the diamondbacks lost this series
by by by very much if at all diamondbacks outscore the yankees 14 runs to 11 they out hit
the yankees 25 hits to 19 diamondbacks were 7 for 31 with runners in scoring position so they
had plenty of opportunity to score and probably should have scored much more than they did
yankees were fairly efficient with their 5 for 18 with runners in scoring position starting
pitching ERA is fairly close there.
3.6 for
the Yankees, 3.45 for the
Diamondbacks. Both had
good outings that offset the bad
outings for sure. Both Merrill
and Zach were very good. Ryan Nelson
not so much for the Diamondbacks
and the relief pitching ERA. Again,
Diamondbacks relievers
did not allow a run until this
game. Interestingly enough, again,
those ghost
runners are not
real runs. Those aren't
actual earned runs. So things look better for these relieved pitchers than they,
than they should unless you love or hate, I don't know, do you love the ghost runner rule?
Do you hate it? I don't know. But again, this is not one of those series where when you
take a look at the numbers afterwards, you really think the Diamondbacks lost this one,
two games to one by any stretch of the imagination. And that sucks. That part sucks. The Diamondbacks
did, of course, do enough there in game two to make all of that happen. But there's just a
lot of things here that could be encouraging.
The idea here that the Diamondbacks do have some starting pitching depth that is coming
very soon.
We just got those update yesterday from Tori and everything sounds very encouraging as far
as Jordan Montgomery's process or progress on joining the starting rotation, Erod, getting
healthy, and even Paul Seawald's updates sounded very encouraging.
So in regards to the way things went, you know, it's not ideal, but there is still
some things that you could take away that were positive here.
It was still a lot of fight in this team.
Merrill Kelly still had himself an excellent outing.
And, you know, again, didn't get the run support he deserved.
But yeah, not great.
People, El Gallo in the chat says Ghostrunner is absolute dog shit.
I don't completely disagree with that.
I'm not a huge fan of the Ghost Runner rule at this point.
But I'm also not a fan of games going longer than this.
like we were starting to get to a point where some extra inning games were going way longer than
11 innings.
They were going 12, 13.
Some of you were at the 17 inning game there at Chase Field.
So I think that the idea here is that when you're talking about 162 game season, you know,
it's not great to make these guys be playing, you know, extra time.
This game would have, it's fine.
This is an extra inning game.
The Diamondbacks are off tomorrow.
So it's not a terrible time for them to have.
something this long, but, or game this long at this point.
But I mean, man, it's just, it's, it's really sucks that they were this close to taking
this series from the Yankees.
They did give them a lot of trouble considering the Yankees came into this series undefeated,
but it just came up just short of winning not only this game, but the series.
The bigger problem here is, is if Peraldo Pardomo does miss time.
Again, the Diamondbacks do have the depth here with the way Blaze Alexander is playing
right now to cover for him.
but uh,
pro domo just like he was today in,
you know,
in the 10th inning,
Prudomo has just been a key part of the diamond back's offense and their rallies at
times and his defense has been pretty damn good.
Um,
but yeah,
I mean,
uh,
Eric in the chat says that bach Jesus.
Um,
yeah,
I don't know what the fuck was going on there late in this game,
especially with the umpiring.
Um,
but I,
I mean,
that's,
that's the,
that's the problem right now.
umpires having that human element there's just a lot of things that are confusing like that bach i
didn't get a chance to see it clearly uh because i was still agonizing over everything that happened to
uh perdomo but um yeah that's great uh piece of yoshi says i was actually thinking you do something
somewhat stupid and play one of your outfields play third and slide gno over and pray nothing gets uh hit
to the left side um no i i i don't uh i don't know i don't like any of that everything
in this game late was a damn nightmare, by the way.
And I still can't believe that Tori got himself into the situation.
I don't ever want to hear anybody complain about leaving players on the bench at the end of games
because this is why we do this.
This is why we do this.
We need those guys sometimes.
Have we thought about Scott McGuff just trying to be better?
There's that too.
It just needs to be better.
I was really disappointed because Scott McGuff had not allowed to run.
He looked amazing yesterday.
In fact, Tori was asked today about, you know, just the trust that he has in Scott McGuff being in high-leverage situation.
So ironically, after professing that he did have that trust in him, Maguff did what he did today.
I think that this, you know, this bullpen does need some help.
And I think that, you know, Jesse at times has brought it up that the, that, you know, not going after, you know, bullpen arm this, this offseason might end up being a big mistake.
We know we do have those comments from Mike Hazen and Ken Kendrick that made it sound like the Diamondbacks are willing to, you know, definitely pursue a bullpen arm later here when it comes closer to the trade deadline.
But that's not now.
And again, even with the reinforcements coming, even with all the options the Diamondbacks are going to have, they're fairly limited on options now.
And things don't get easier for them.
They have an off day.
And then they go into Atlanta to play the Braves.
Things are going to get very difficult for this team.
they come off a lot of, you know, a lot of their relievers being used and, again, a lot of
question marks about both Tommy Henry and Ryan Nelson. You also get a very, very good Atlanta Braves
pitching staff. So if, you know, again, if Rodan was able to do this to you today and the
Yankees bullpen was able to hold you the way they were, like prepare yourselves for the Atlanta Braves
and they're pitching. It's white socks beat them. So that's one thing you could say. But yeah, I mean,
I do want to take a step back in regards to Corbyn Carroll.
I know that there's a lot of concern about Corbyn Carroll, and I am there with you.
I think Corbyn so far has looked very passive this season, and I don't exactly know the reason for it.
But I do hope that that changes today.
It felt very much like, again, like I said earlier, that things were moving in the right direction.
But, you know, definitely a lot of questionable decisions.
The sophomore slumps a real thing, though.
It is.
Coming from experience with Julio Rodriguez, it happens.
Is it more on the player?
Or is it more on just the amount of information and now is available on the player to opposition?
Well, I think it's both because they know how much information is available on them.
And I think it gets in their head a little bit.
Now you start overthinking it.
And that's why the season is.
Like, Julio again, is starting the season very rough.
Like, it's just strange.
And I think it's more than statistics in baseball.
It's mental.
it's meant the mentality and it absolutely is.
Because because especially when you're in your rookie year
and you're having the year that Corbyn Carroll was,
you just kind of black out and do it.
Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
And you're almost like, it's like ignorance is bliss in a way
because you have no, you don't know any better.
So now you're just like, screw it.
Who says we can't do it?
Who says I can't go out there and steal that many bags
and hit that many home runs, right?
Like logically it doesn't make any sense.
But when you don't care about logic
and you're just out there playing ball, it's different.
once you kind of start letting things catch up to you and you're right the mental thing is is a big part of the game of baseball
Christian Walker was talking about the fact that like at times when Zach Gallen is on the mound they almost feel more comfortable because they feel like we're not going to need that many runs anyways as long as we get a couple it's fine and that takes the pressure off of them when this team is pressing when the pressure is there
it can be felt.
But of course, there's one guy that's always cool under the pressure.
And that is the one and only Jesse Friedman, who is joining us right now from Chase Field.
Hello, sir.
Please tell me good things about Geraldo Perdomo because me and the chat, we're all kind of worried.
Yeah, you guys might have seen it come through on Twitter.
Tori Lavello said that he is day today with a right knee injury.
We don't know really any specifics beyond that.
He didn't sound overly concerned about it for whatever that's worth.
But I don't think that an injured list stint is imminent at this point.
I mean, it certainly sounds like he's going to make the trip to Atlanta.
So stay tuned for updates on that.
But the early going, I guess is positive for right now.
All right, man.
Well, do we have what, Tori from the clubhouse right now?
Yeah, we have, we do have Tori's initial thoughts on what was it.
outrageous baseball games today at Chase Field.
So there's a lot to unpack here.
Bottom line is we didn't win the game.
That's the thing that I need to focus on.
We need to play better inside of the game in order to win games like this.
Diamondback baseball is fundamentally sound.
It's not giving up an inning's worth of outs on the basis.
It's controlling the zone and the bat when you're,
in the box. It's pounding the zone a lot like Merrill did today. And those are little things that
we've got to tidy up. I mean, they're a good baseball team across the diamond. So when you're
giving them, like I said, an inning worth of outs, and it's eight versus nine innings, this is
going to most likely be the outcome. I was proud of this scene for a lot of things. They kept
fighting. They kept grinding. They kept getting on base. They kept doing what they know how to do.
So that's the hard part.
The easy part is on me to make sure that we're coaching them and tidying up the right areas.
And we will.
And when we do, that's when I can sit up here and say, whether we win or lose, I'm okay.
If we play the game the right way and the debacks don't beat the debacks, I felt like we beat ourselves today.
And that's unacceptable.
And we'll get that right.
How much did Tori Lavolo beat the debacks, though?
There's a lot of people questioning his decisions, including, you know, obviously swapping Blaze Alexander out for Jace Peterson, not to mention the situation that they left themselves in there in extra innings.
It's never great, Derek, when you have a relief pitcher batting with the bases loaded in two outs.
Not ideal.
In a one run game and extra inning, something has gotten seriously wrong.
We did ask Tori Lavello about having McGuff have to hit in that spot.
We'll get to the decision to pinch hit, which sort of let to the.
this led to this here in a moment. But here's what Tori had to say about having Scott McGuff,
of all people, take that at bat in the 11th inning. Yeah, they all been talking smack about
who's going to lead off. He ain't going to be the lead off hitter in my model for sure.
Look, we were putting a really tough spot as soon as we were out of infielders and could tell
how to come into the game. And it was clear that Jerry had to come off. I wasn't budgeting for that.
my moves it wasn't budgeting for that and we were left in that situation and you know we were
thinking throw the ball in the dirt I thought Booney made a great move he he forced a hand that that was
dealt and put it on us and you know McGuff hasn't swung a bat since college and he was a little
late and I'm thinking it would be a great story if he just bloop bloop the ball over the infielers head
we won this game but it didn't happen so credit to Boone it was a great decision and we got clipped
I think that just I think Tori was taking his all pitcher lineup that we're going to talk about a little bit later way too seriously but uh of course jesse yeah not not the best situation to leave yourself in not not the best situation and yeah i i was going crazy in the press box thinking about how how much of an insane coincidence it is that literally pregame today i asked tori levello who his best hitting pitchers are and in the and in the same game
We had, we had, we had Tori literally having to make that decision, right?
And he told us Zach Allen.
He told us Zach Allen, uh, earlier today in the situation.
I suspect, I suspect it was because you don't want your best starting pitcher or one of your best starting pitchers getting hurt, a pinch hitting in the 11th inning of all, of all things.
The people in the chat would come with with torches and pitchforks for him for sure if that would have happened.
Yeah.
Back in 2021, Gallen got hurt.
I mean, he had several injuries in 2021.
It was a bit of a rough year for him,
but it started with an injury that was suffered
while swinging a baseball bat.
So I don't think Tori has any interest in having Zach Gallen swing a bat at this point,
even if he would have been,
even if he would have been the better option.
So Scott McGuff was the guy in that situation.
In Scott's defense, I do think that called third strike was a touch outside.
We did talk with McGuff after the game about that at bat.
He did say, hey, I didn't swing at it for a reason.
I thought it was outside.
But, I mean, let's be real, even if, even if the ump gets that call right, I'm not sure
Scott McGuff necessarily, you know, hits a grand slam or a two run single.
I don't care.
I don't care.
He should have been given an opportunity and a better opportunity than your average hitter.
That's the point where the reason why the umpire is back there as a human element is for
the umpire to take a look at that situation and go, now I'm going to make the strike zone
a little bit smaller on this guy.
I get what's going on here.
I see what's happening.
I mean, maybe that's fair or not.
But if it's not, if that's not what the humans are there to do, Jesse, then get rid of the humans.
You know what I mean?
Get rid of the humans.
Give me a little digitized box.
Show me a cool graphic on screen when we question if a close, you know, ball was a ball or whatever and, you know, call it a day.
But anyway, what else you got?
We got more on this, on Tori on the Jason decision and his reasoning behind it.
Yeah, yeah.
This is Tori Lavello, of course.
that what led to Scott McGuff taking that at bat was that Tori Lavello in, I don't have my scorecard in
front of me. I believe it was in the ninth inning. Tori Lavello pinch hit Jace Peterson for Blaze Alexander
with a right-handed pitcher on the mound, thinking that, you know, Jace Peterson was the better option there.
And he didn't know at the time that Geraldo Pardomo was going to get hurt, but it sort of all spiraled on.
And when Pardomo got hurt, it left the Diamondbacks without a shortstop. And it also,
Teletalmarté wound up having to play shortstop. And it also led to them, you know, losing the
DH slot and therefore, you know, needing to have a pitcher right in the 11th inning.
So here's what Tori had to say about pinch hitting Jace Peterson for Blaze Alexander in that
spot.
It was a really tough matchup for right-in hitters.
Right-on-right.
It was, in my opinion, based on the information that I had, right-on-right was a real
big challenge.
A left-hand hitter was a play there.
So I was looking for somebody to drive the baseball and get on base.
So, yeah, it was outside of the results.
If nothing happened and Jerry stayed in the game and he was able to be the last hitter of the last inning,
I still would have done it.
You know, if I'd know that everybody would have gotten hurt, I would have not done it.
You know what I mean?
So it favored a left-handed hitter, and I know this is where it drives people crazy.
I just felt like it was a good matchup for Jason just didn't work out.
Just didn't work out.
I think a lot of people would have said,
I saw that coming.
But I don't know, Jesse.
Overall, the situation didn't go great and it kind of obviously exasperated, you know,
the moves he made.
It felt like it put a bigger kind of magnified those, those, you know, the swapping Jason,
having all of that turn on him the way that it did.
Yeah, I mean, let's be fair here.
Like, you know, if Geraldo Perdomo doesn't get hurt, then the decision, I mean,
I'm not saying it works out great.
it certainly would have looked better.
I mean, you know, you probably don't have Scott McGuff hitting in the 11th inning at that
point.
If you're not expecting your shortstop to, you know, blow out his knee on the basis when
you're making that decision, especially that late in the game, the chance that happens
is extremely, extremely low.
So, you know, in a sense, hindsight is 2020 here.
But I also did have questions in the moment, you know, before Perdomo had gotten hurt,
before Catell played shortstop before Scott McGuff stepped up to the plate.
I did have questions like a lot of people in the chat probably about why
the Diamondbacks were pinch hitting Jace Peterson for a very, very hot hitter in Blaze Alexander.
Now, granted, Alexander has done all of his damage so far against left-handed pitching.
He's had the platoon advantage, I believe, in every single one of his played appearances this
season, or at least the vast majority of them.
You know, he's here to match lefties.
Like, that is his role right now on this Diamondbacks team.
But the reality is, is Jace Peterson against a right-handed hitter, is he a right-handed
pitcher is he really an upgrade over Blaze Alexander, swinging them out well against a same-handed
guy? It seems like, it seemed a little too cute to me. Like, like, pinch hitting, you know,
I'm all for pinch hitting, late in games, trying to get the platoon advantage. But Peterson
versus Alexander, in my head at least, the margin there is a little bit too small to warrant the risk,
which of course in this case wound up being expounded, the risk of, you know, putting yourself
in a situation where could tell Marta has to play shortstop.
Insights 2020 in this scenario, like we said, it ended up going definitely south on Tori when it came down to it.
But it's also why you typically don't see those kind of moves made, right?
Like when you just think like, all right, jock got on.
Let's put in a pinch runner or something.
It's like you can't just do that because that ends up costing you a player that you might end up needing very, very much later in the game.
But Jesse, of course, we do have your favorite thing in the whole wide world, which is,
another edition of numbers, don't lie.
What is today's numbers, Jesse?
Yeah, this one is pretty crazy, Derek.
I didn't necessarily want to go this direction,
but I had to make a rush decision
on what my number would be
with all the chaos going down at the end of the game.
So three is the number of line drives
that Corbyn Carroll has hit up to this point in the season.
I believe he has had 20 batted balls.
So three of them have been line drives.
17 of them out of that 17,
They've all been grounders or pop-ups.
There have been no productive fly balls that he's hit so far.
And you look at the ground balls.
Almost every single ground ball that Corbyn Carroll has hit has been not saying like really any ground balls are great,
but a lot of the ones he's hit were of the chopper variety where he's just banging it into the ground.
A lot of launch angles for him in the, you know, negative 60, negative 70, negative 80 range.
We saw a couple of those today.
He did get a couple of hits today, right?
There was the double down the line.
that was a chopper.
You know, he also had, he had another hit later in the game, which was also a chopper on
the infield, which he can use his speed in that situation, was able to beat it out.
So, yeah, I am not here to say that I am super concerned about Corby and Carroll.
It's too early for that at this point.
I want to make that very clear.
But what we've seen from him so far has been a lot of the same stuff.
I mean, rarely when you have a star hitter struggling, you know, early in a season,
is it so easy to characterize like,
every single ball that they've hit, almost everything that Corbyn Carroll has hit has either been a pop up to an infielder or a chopper that he rolled way over the top of.
He clearly is out of sync.
And, you know, by no means is this loss on Corby and Carroll.
You know, I mentioned he actually did have those two hits, which which proved to be pretty big in this game.
But, you know, obviously Corbin is a really big part of this team.
And in these first seven games, he is, he has not look great at the play.
I think he has looked frustrated, which can kind of appear like he's a bit.
you know, just those off, you know, and I think again that you're, everything you're noticing
is absolutely correct. But like he's, he's, it's compounded, right? Something that Shane was
talking about was, you know, the mental aspect of it and just the sophomore slump where, you know,
that it's different now. You know, there's more information on you, but then you also know that
there's more information on you. So you're overthinking it. You know, obviously, the,
other thing that I believe someone brought up in the chat was the expectations are different.
You come in trying to prove yourself when you're a rookie like Corby and Carroll did.
And when after you do now, whether you want to call it a standard or whether you want to call it
very high expectations, those are there weighing over you in your second season and you're
expected to live up to it.
It can be a lot sometimes for these superstar players, especially when they're still, you know,
developing even at this point as a baseball player.
Yeah.
And you, I don't know for certain that that bled over to Corbyn's base running, but he did make a really,
a really key base running mistake.
You might have already touched on this.
You know, first and second, two outs, Christian Walker at the plate.
By no means are you guaranteed to score or run there necessarily.
There were two outs in the inning.
Walker wound up striking out to start the next frame.
But yeah, it was a caught stealing pickoff, which is something we've seen several times from the
Diamondbacks already this year.
We saw it, I believe, yesterday with Jake.
McCarthy, you know, for a team that really prides itself on its base running and has been an
extraordinarily good base running team over the last couple of seasons, D-backs are making an
awful lot of outs on the bases. And it wasn't just that one. It was also a Eugenio Suarez getting
doubled off second base when Jorge Barrosa hit a hard line drive. That one in the moment, to me,
seemed like it was hit so hard that maybe Suarez just couldn't have got back. But Tori said after
the game that that was a base running mistake. And looking at the replay, I can see why
Suarez broke. His first move was to break toward third base instead of going back to second,
which is what it should have been on a hard line drive like that one.
A frustrating game all around, like Ryan says in the chat, and I agree with that.
It was a very good outing by Merrill Kelly, who joins Zach Gallen for the most,
tied for sixth most of a seven innings pitch, two or fewer runs allowed or less.
and yeah again these guys have been super consistent it's what makes them the hosses of you know the starting rotation
and the diamondbacks would not have been have not done what they did last year without them and wouldn't be in the position they are without them right now
they have to lean on both of these guys very much due to the fact that they don't they don't know what they're going to get out of tommy henry and ryan nelson and and they're still a little unsure as to when they're going to get you know jordan mcgoyan
Murray and Erod back into the starting rotation.
The Diamondback sure didn't lose this game because of Merrill Kelly, right?
I mean, seven innings, five hits, two runs, one walk, I think it was, four strikeouts,
only 91 pitches, a really, really impressive outing for Merrill Kelly.
The one mistake he made was that sinker to Aaron Judge.
Of course, Aaron Judge is the kind of guy to make you pay for those kind of mistakes.
And it was at the bottom of the zone, but Merrill said that he wanted to, he wanted to get that
to the outer edge of the plate, maybe even off the plate,
but it wound up leaking back, right?
Pretty much center cut at the bottom of the zone.
And Aaron Judge put that one in the seats.
Meryl after the game was adamant that it's not just Aaron Judge who makes you pay for that.
It's, you know, a lot of hitters in this league that are able to hit a pit in that particular spot.
Well, and Tori talked about not putting Aaron Judge on.
This is what he had to say.
Yeah, that's, I'm kicking myself for that right now.
Yes, of course, of course.
You know, you don't want to give up the second run,
whether it's two or three runs.
It doesn't matter an extra inning.
So, yeah, I felt like we were going to force him into some weak contact.
We just made a mistake in the middle of the zone.
But I could have taken everything out of the entire equation and just put him on.
And, yeah, I'm kicking myself for not doing that right now.
Shane would have hit him.
And I think that's the right call.
But, well, you know, that's why we're not managers.
Just pin him.
pin him. I would have hit him, but only because I would have been throwing. So it wouldn't have hurt that bad.
Yeah, no, I mean, obviously again, I think I could throw faster than Josh Rojas, though.
Yeah, yeah. Well, he still got you through that inning pallid. You still hit the under. So we're very proud of you.
I also, I think here, I realistically think that that that ovation that we heard, Jesse, when when Aaron Judge hit that home run was one of the loudest ovations I've ever heard in Chase Field. And it's sad to say that. And after that ovation,
I don't think I would have pitched to that man the rest of the game.
Chase Field was rock and Derek, and for all the wrong reasons,
for a good portion of not only this game, but this whole series,
there were a lot of Yankees fans here,
not only today, about the last couple of days.
There were over 35,000 fans in attendance here at Chase today for a Wednesday day game,
which is unheard of.
The devax generally are somewhere in the teens for these Wednesday day games,
so basically twice what their typical attendance would be.
So yeah, Yankees fans showed up and showed out.
There were a lot of Let's Go Yankees' chance throughout this game.
You know, they're yelling Anthony Volpey's game when he's up there.
Yeah, they absolutely showed out in this series.
And it's something that, of course, if you're a Diamondbacks fan,
I mean, that's the last thing you want to see in this ballpark,
particularly given the success that this franchise has had recently.
But it's the reality of the situation.
Yankees fans, man, I mean, we talk a lot about Cubs fans and Cardinals fans
and Dodgers fans and how well they track.
travel. You know, the Yankees are from a long, long ways away from Phoenix, Arizona, but they still, those fans certainly still showed out here this week.
Those are, those are residents, Jesse. Those are people that live next to you and I. Don't get it twisted. They did not travel for this game. Those are people in Arizona. And again, it's, it's, you know, some fans have the right perspective, like on my tweet that I sent out some people about like the seven Yankees fans to one Diamondbacks fan I saw. People were like, hey,
they're still paying the bills.
And that's the idea that we should keep here, right?
Like as long as people are in that building and it's not empty,
like you and I have seen it at times in the past five years,
then all is good, whether it's opposing fans,
whether it's Diamondbacks fans.
It's just a matter of when you ask who it matters to,
why it matters, it matters to the players.
And don't think it does it because they hear that giant ovation for an opposing player.
And they understand to an extent.
That's Aaron Judge.
He's definitely an elite player.
or that I think it's hard not to, you know, goff at that and be like, oh, my God,
when you see that kind of home run hit from a man like that, right?
But I will also say that, you know, you would love it if the Diamondbacks got that support more,
more often, and not just opening day and not just a few days around opening day,
and not just on bobblehead nights and Alec Thomas T-shirt nights the rest of the time, too.
I get it.
We're not going to all come out on Wednesday,
games. Those Yankee fans were crazy and committed.
And it's the only time that they get to see them if they live here in Arizona.
So we'll give them the pass on that.
But we want to make sure we show up and show out so that this team can feel that love because it matters.
And if it didn't matter, I don't think the players would have brought it up last season as often as they did.
I just can't get over thinking back again to this game.
Like the Diamondbacks just made so many mistakes today.
I mean, Tori.
And they say, yeah, they still, to their credit, they did still almost win the game.
I mean, Tori talking there about not putting Judge on in the 11th inning.
You know, maybe that cost them a run.
I mean, maybe this game is still going if the Diamondbacks don't make that decision.
There's the decision we discussed earlier with pinch hitting Peterson for Blaise Alexander.
You know, what if the team doesn't go that route?
There's Corbyn's base running mistake.
There's Aeohenio Suarez's based running mistake.
There's Scott McGuff's Bach, which I haven't even touched on.
That was another, something that maybe didn't actually factor into the outcome of this
game. I guess you'd have a debate over, you know, whether both those runs would have scored
anyway. But yeah, I mean, they just, they made so many mistakes today that, yeah, like you said,
I mean, it's a wonder that they were even as close in this one as they ultimately were.

quite possibly one of my favorite shirts we've ever had you get all these wonderful benefits so make
sure to sign up today and become part of the family jesse you did ask troy lovallo again
about his best hitting pitchers on a day when the diamondbacks ended up needing a pitcher to hit
which is like as rare as lightning striking these days.
But this all came on the back of the fact that Tori Lavallo revealed,
or I should say Zach Gallen revealed to us yesterday,
that Tori Lavallo has this all-pitcher lineup,
including where those pitchers would play in the field,
did not reveal what his actual starting lineup hitting would be,
but he did reveal where the pitchers would play in the field.
We actually have that graphic.
Here is where everyone would play.
Jess, you want to update us on this and give us the thoughts from the clubhouse?
I mean, first of all, this is, I think, my favorite graphic that we've ever made at
P.O.H. X. This is just, this is, this is, this is beautiful stuff right here. Yeah, Scott McGuff,
of course, was the was the chosen man today. As I said earlier, Zach Gallen, you're probably
of injury concerns there. So even though Tori did mention Gallen as being potentially his best
hitter earlier today, no, no huge surprise they didn't go.
in that direction. We did ask Scott McGuff, like, when his last at-bat was, and it was back in Japan.
He said his first year in Japan, you remember taking at least, I'm not sure if it was multiple
of bats or just won at bat at some point. But, yeah, I mean, at this point, Derek, like any
major league pitcher, like, even picking up a bat is, I mean, why would you even do that, right?
It's not like Tori, it's not like Tori had warned McGuff in advance. Like, hey, if we ever
are in a situation where we need a relief pitcher to come in and hit because the bench happens
to be empty, you're the guys. I'm going to need you to take BP a few times during spring
training or something. That's not my understanding of the situation. McGuff found out, you know,
a few batters beforehand. He said that Tori did give him a little bit of lead time. But, you know,
he's still, he's still the shortstop, Derek. So, you know, he can hold on to that.
Let's go back to that real fast because I want to describe for the people listening what we have here.
This is a graphic of where these guys would play in the position.
Zach Gallen, very upset that he's at second base because he feels like he should be the shortstop, which is where Scott McGuff is playing.
We have is that it's Tommy Henry at first base, right, Miguel Castro and right field.
We have Ryan Nelson, or I'm sorry, let me correct this, Kyle Nelson in center field.
That's very important because Tori was adamant that Kyle Nelson.
can get it done in the outfield.
And then you have Joe Mantiply in left field.
Odd choice there.
Ryan Nelson rounds out the infield at third base.
And then behind the plate, he has Bryce Jarvis.
We talked about the big body.
Not exactly the big body.
I thought we'd see behind the plate.
Maybe Joe Mantiply would be a guy we'd think back there,
like we said yesterday, but still very tall.
I don't know.
This is weird.
This is weird for me, Jesse.
I don't know if I agree with Tori,
but he did just give us active pitchers.
He also gave us his bench,
which Merrill Kelly would be on, and I'm sure he's not happy about that.
But the one thing he did bring up that we brought up, Dre Jameson,
who's noticeably absent from this.
And Tori said, yes, absolutely,
Dre Jamison would be in center field if he was healthy
and playing in this fictitious situation,
which is odd to just not include him anyway,
considering it's not real.
Yeah, I guess Tori just decided not to include any of the injured players,
so we don't have a ruling on CWOL.
Very seriously.
He takes it seriously, Jesse.
In case he has to use that in the game.
This was a scientific exercise undoubtedly.
So, yeah, we don't see Dre Jameson here.
But, yeah, I mean, you and I, we talked to Dre a few weeks ago when he told us he'd run like a 4-3-40-yard bash or something, which is insane level.
After meeting an Olympic sprinter, just thought he would try it out himself to see how fast he could go.
And he casually ran a 4-3-40.
Yeah, there are a few questions about Drey Jameson's athleticism.
still maybe some questions about, you know, what, what it'll, what did it look like when he comes back from TJ and what, you know, how will the Velo look and all that stuff?
But few questions about Drey Jameson speed and athleticism.
Well, we did actually have one.
You did.
And you asked Tori it because we talked to Tori about this exact thing.
And Tori brought up that he actually considered using Dre Jamison when he was on the roster as a pinch runner.
Here's what he had to say.
This year?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, to be honest with you, we knew that.
And he was going to be a designated pinch runner when he was a striking pitcher last year
or a reliever when he wasn't going to be available.
So we had him doing that stuff to make sure he can get on the bases and not blow out.
He's a definite weapon.
His legs are pretty special.
You wouldn't consider using him this year any kind of capacity?
No, no, no, no, definitely not.
No way.
Definitely not.
No way.
In case you couldn't hear that, that was Jesse asking if he actually considered it this year.
maybe having Dre just be a pinch runner.
All of this.
I was 99.99.999% sure that you're not going to throw a pitcher who's, I mean, from an
injured list standpoint, it'd be a disaster, right?
Like, you have to find a way to get Gray Jameson on your roster.
Just to be a pinch runner?
Just to be like a specialized pinch runner.
Yeah, I was pretty sure I knew the answer.
But, yeah, it was fascinating to hear that the Diamondback seriously considered using him.
way last year when he was still on the roster as both the starter and reliever.
That's the thing that's fascinating to me here is we've joked about this. We've talked about
it putting fire in our blood, right? But at the same time, it just goes to show that
Drey Jamison really, really is that fast. He is as fast as advertised so fast that
he's a pitcher that Tori Lavallo has actually considered using as a pinch runner. And all of this,
Jesse, it's all, it was all fun and games earlier in the day. These were all jokes and ha-hazs and
laughs just like the lineup stuff and oh which bat which which which pitcher would you hit
until it all ends up becoming reality in the 11th inning today and now it's not so funny
anymore is it yeah maybe maybe we need to corner tori about who his who his pinch runner would
be now if i don't know that i guess the bench is empty and someone someone gets a hit and
gets hurt running the bases or something and they have and they're forced to go to a pitcher to
to come in. You know, I'm trying to think of who on this team I would expect to have like a
reasonably good sprint speed. Kyle Nelson. Yeah, it might be. It might be Kyle Nelson. He's he's
slim and and from what we've heard from Torrey about his his defense shagging balls in the outfield.
He can get it. Yeah, maybe that would be the guy. I do have to say like if dray jameson had ever been
used in that spot, it would have been one of the most electric things if you were a you know,
a Diamondbacks fan, or really just a baseball fan at large.
Like, how cool is it that a team has a relief pitcher or starting pitcher?
The team has a pitcher who runs a 4-340-yard dash and, you know, just so happens to be basically
the fastest person in baseball.
I mean, Jay Jameson would have 100th percentile sprint speed, most likely, if he were
actually outrunning the bases on a day-to-day basis.
Like, if you put that guy in in the ninth inning, you know, to steal second base and, you know,
score on a hard hit liner or something like that.
That would be one of the coolest things you could ever see as a baseball fan.
Peace of Yoshi says all of these pitcher memories are coming back because of this game.
And he's not wrong, Jesse.
We saw Ginkle come in and immediately give up a home run.
We saw Scott McGuff struggle.
It was very reminiscent of last year where it seemed like no matter who Tori put in,
no matter how good they were, no matter how good they've been,
they weren't able to get it done in a high leverage situation with the game on the line.
And that had to be kind of a nightmare today for Tori to see both Ginkle and McGuff, especially
McGuff, who I know you're not the guy, you know, he's not in the closer role.
He's not even considered probably the setup man.
But just a guy that has been very good in his outing so far.
Kevin Ginkle, a guy, you know exactly where you're going to get out of them.
And both of them gave up, you know, some pretty crucial runs.
I mean, in the eighth and ninth, I have to hand it to Joe Man Supply and Ryan Thompson.
Yeah, six up, six down.
Yeah, six up, six down.
went through the middle of that Yankees lineup was pretty impressive. But yeah, I mean, you got to the
10th inning and Kevin Ginkl threw one pitch. And, you know, it was a fastball that wasn't necessarily
in like a horrible spot up and in. But, you know, Ginkle does tend to throw four seamers up and
sliders down. I guess first pitch or maybe just looking for seamer up. And that's exactly,
exactly what he threw. And it went over the fence. Diamondbacks miraculously tied the game in
in the bottom half of the 10th inning and sent it to the 11th.
But yeah, that was obviously a, you know, a big mistake for him.
And I continue to be like, as long as Paul Seawald is on the injured list,
I continue to be a little bit tentative on, you know, the back end of this bullpen.
Not to say the ginkle is going to continue to struggle.
You know, I certainly expect him to bounce back.
But there aren't quite as many back end weapons in that bullpen than you'd probably like to have.
Yeah.
Shout out to Jorge Barrosa, by the way, who had an.
a huge hit and again did exactly what we knew he does well which is hit hit high fastballs and
and he absolutely clobbered one uh in in a big in a big you know at bat for him so got to give
him credit where credits do jesse the diamond backs are going on the road which means you unfortunately
have to come into the studio and do the show with me here uh before you leave chase field you have
any final takeaways from this series or from this pretty chaotic game yeah it wasn't a it
wasn't an outstanding
a home stand for the diamondbacks as a whole four and three
you know maybe you probably could have had I mean
debacks weren't especially close in that game that they lost to the Rockies
but any game that you lose to the Rockies is a game you maybe feel like you should
have had and then here in this series I mean that the Yankees had a you know it was a
pretty commanding victory for them on Monday but given all the mistakes that
they made today and you know it's it's tough at the Dbacks at this point I
mean they've outscored their opponents by 21 runs
through seven games, which literally means they're averaging to win by three runs per game right now.
And yet they've only won more game than they lost.
So I guess the run differential nonsense from last year where their record was a whole lot
better than the run differential said it would be.
So far this year we have very much the opposite where the debacks have really put it on
their opponents when they've won games.
But these closer ones haven't gone their way.
Speaking of you leaving Chase Field, we got a little video of Alex Rodriguez making a pretty crazy comment we didn't expect to hear from him about Chase Field.
This is what Arod had to say.
Of all the great stadiums I played in, I've come up with my top five favorite stadiums and favorite experiences.
And I'll tell you why.
So debate me all you want.
I want to hear after you hear this, you're top five.
Number five, I'm going to start with Dodger Stadium.
For me, it's all about the Dodger dog, great fans, awesome, awesome sight.
Then I'm going to go with number four, Arizona Diamondbacks.
This is a newer stadium, about 25, 30 years old, but you can see the ball as a hitter incredibly well.
And they have great food in that clubhouse.
Number three, I'm going to go with where the San Francisco Giants play.
You can't have a better place.
I mean, it's right on the water.
When you overlook the water where Barry Bonds hit all those home runs.
By the way, the house that Barry Bonds built, you see the ball really well.
Again, great atmosphere.
Number two, this one's going to hurt a little bit.
I'm going to go with Fenway Park.
Great fans.
You have the monster.
It's just small.
It feels like high school, college, intimate, but you still have almost 40,000 people.
And smart fan base, knowledgeable.
They drive you crazy.
But they are kind of a 10th man for the Boston Red Sox.
And then number one, I'm going to go with a house that Babe Ruth built, the old Yankee Stadium,
26 World Championships.
with Ruth, DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson,
Greg Nettles, Pinella, all the great ones.
And of course, the Pinch Stripes,
playing in front of 55,000 people every day.
There's nothing like home field advantage
at the old Yankee Stadium.
Where's T-Mobile Park?
He's very upset.
He's upset about a lot of things.
I'm with you.
I'm with you, Shane.
I'm with you, Shane.
I'm with you, Jay-Mobile Park is a joy.
Look, Jesse, I can't.
I'm looking up on,
baseball reference.com, how many concussions Alex Rodriguez has had? It doesn't have that as a stat,
but I feel like that somehow factors in. What? Did he say Chasefield is one of the newer ballpark?
Is he talking about from like when he has to be beating like when he played there, right? Not like in the grand
scheme of today, right? That's a, that's a wild take. That is a wild take. Yeah, it is objectively not one of the,
one of the newer ballparks at this point, right? Hence why we're constantly talking about where the diamond
and backs are going to be playing in the next few years because, yeah, there's a whole bunch of
storylines there.
Yeah, I thought it was interesting that Arod, he compliments the, the atmosphere, the food,
you know, the quality of the fans with the other ballparks.
And with Chasefield, he basically just says, yeah, I like the batter's eye.
The batters eye is sick.
I like it in there.
Oh, he said the food to clubhouse, too.
He was all there's good food in the clubhouse too.
Yeah, he also said the food in the clubhouse, which, I mean, I guess is great for him.
But like for the average fan or even media member going in there every day.
Like we don't, I mean, we don't get whatever food they have.
No, we don't.
Do you want me to talk to somebody and see if we can get you clubhouse food from now on?
Yeah, we'll try.
I would appreciate that.
I'll reach out to my people.
We need to save some money.
That's for sure.
All right, man.
Well, okay, get back here.
We got a show to do tomorrow at 1 o'clock.
So make sure you don't stay there.
Because I know you'll probably drive there tomorrow thinking that they have a game.
But they are off.
So don't forget that.
More importantly, tonight.
Jesse, episode five of the Snakes Alive documentary finally drops at 6 p.m.
So we finally get to see how things play out.
I can't wait to see what the ending to this story is.
I hope they don't kill off any of my favorite characters.
Oh, man.
I'm expecting a big cliffhanger so that season two is even better.
But we'll see.
What do you think, Jesse?
Why did it take this long?
What happened?
Yeah, I don't know.
I'm trying to think.
I mean, everything seems so strategic up to this point where they were kind of
Building it up, yeah, building it up to the regular season.
At one point, we, you know, laid it all out,
and it looked like they would be releasing the last episode the day before the season
if they stuck with the every other day schedule,
which would have made a lot of sense, you know,
great way to, you know, hype up fans before the season starts.
But then, you know, they kind of skipped a couple days.
And then, yeah, we still haven't gotten episode five.
Now they're dropping it on a Wednesday night.
I guess the team doesn't play tomorrow.
So maybe they're hoping that, you know,
the excitement from that can kind of carry over into the off day.
But yeah, it does seem-
Jesse, they're letting the video eat.
You know a little something about that, right?
That's, that's fair.
That's fair.
Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how it ends, Derek.
I mean, you know, maybe the Diamondbacks win the World Series.
I'm excited to find out.
I can't wait.
I can't wait to find out.
But of course, if you want to go see some baseball games at Chase Field,
the boys will be back.
They have two series on the road, and then they'll be back.
