We are in fact back.
We are in fact a wagon.
We are in fact on a roll.
Diamondbacks win tonight by a score of 7 to 1.
Damon,
what are your thoughts overall on this big win?
I just want to start off by saying,
is this what it feels like to sit in this chair?
It's good, right?
Yeah, it feels, yeah, that's what it's felt like.
This is what it feels like to be on top of the mountain.
It's pretty magical, right?
Yeah.
We don't get to feel it often,
but sometimes when we get to sit in the big chair,
we understand how good it feels.
Diamondbacks right now look like a,
starting to look like a wagon,
starting to recognize their shape as a wagon.
They improved a nine and four in their last 13 games.
Of course, their record now stands at 34 and 36.
And the big story tonight,
I guess the two dueling stories is that Ryan Nelson was very good,
and so was the offense.
And tonight very much felt like this team,
was running on all cylinders.
It was a very well-rounded output from the starting lineup tonight.
Like nobody, a few guys stand out.
We're going to talk about those guys.
But for the most part, it felt like they got contributions from everyone,
except the guys that at times were the only ones doing it could tell Marte and Christian Walker.
Like those are the only guys that went 0-4 tonight.
But everybody else kind of kicked in a little bit.
Right.
Yeah.
It's a crazy night when you see that kind of thing happening.
Yeah.
I mean, it was a great performance tonight.
Ryan Nelson, everything that you could have ever hoped for in this performance tonight,
like for all,
maybe the best performance of his entire career.
I mean,
definitely up there for discussion.
And then the offense just continues to get the job done.
Like they,
they really,
we talked about when the Merrill and Zach injuries happen pretty subsequently.
We talked about how this offense is going to need to stop being bad and figure it out
and carry this roster because.
Obviously, the pitching staff is not up to the standard of a playoff caliber team right now.
Right.
Right.
So you just kind of, you kind of know you have to go out there any given night and put up more than five
runs because that's what it's going to take to win the ball game.
Absolutely.
And that's kind of in the story of these last couple weeks, it feels like, like we're finally
playing some better baseball and we're finally seeing some like a little bit more consistency
in the offense.
Don't get me wrong.
We still have our nights where when we're not good, we are really not good.
Like it there's like one game a week that feels like we're about to get no hit.
I'll say that right now.
Like there's one game a week where it's like are, are they going to get one hit tonight?
And then pretty much all the rest of the games have been above average offense.
And you love to see it.
It's, I mean, it's it's fun when the boys are when Gino's hitting home runs and like, I mean, I love it.
Yeah, you have Gino hitting a 395 foot solo home run.
You have Jock adding in with a 425 foot solo home run of his own.
We're going to find out from Jesse when he joins us from the clubhouse, which bat jock was using.
Obviously, that's a big question we have.
I texted Jesse.
I said that's number one most important thing.
Oh, without a doubt.
Without a doubt.
But I mean, Gino, there's a guy, right?
That's really been struggling.
He walked twice tonight showing some incredible patience at the plate when we kind of pegged him as being obviously a fairly impatient bat with the number of strikeouts he's had lately.
But he went one for two.
He had that home run.
He drove in that run himself.
You also had Jack Peterson going two for four, two RBI.
Corbyn Carroll, one for four.
Lordus Guriel Jr., two for four with an RBI.
Randall Gritchick, in the lineup against the Ritey.
What in what world, Tori, do you do that?
He was one for four with a run scored.
So, I mean, there's just lots of contributions.
Of course, one guy left out there, Tucker Barnhart.
He was two for four.
Big night for him, two RBI himself, a run scored.
Barnhart's last hit was on May 7th.
Damon, that was 39 days ago.
That's hard to do.
It's hard to do.
And he's walked quite a bit in there, right?
Like he's been able to get on base,
but he just hasn't been able to get that elusive hit.
Joe, you were talking to him post game.
And like you could tell he was like,
like, you could tell he was like, yeah,
finally a good performance.
Like, like, yeah, it's been wearing on him a little bit mentally.
He said something to the effect of like,
you know, you just got to keep going.
That's what this, that's what this sport's all about.
It's a grind.
And you just got to keep getting up every day and working just as hard as you did the last day.
So like you, you know it's been like in the back of his head.
And it's, it's, hopefully this inspires a little bit of confidence moving forward.
Well, to be fair, at times Gabby Moreno hasn't been much better than, than Barnhart.
So it's not like he's losing playing time due to the fact that he's, you know, not
contributing offensively.
And, and his counterpart is there's a lot of guys that.
have struggled and have gone through that.
Corbyn Carroll is a guy that obviously his struggles are well documented, well talked about.
We discuss it all the time on this show.
But Carol now has reached safely in 15 straight games.
And that's something, again, that even, you know, with some of his like last night,
his O for Four night, tonight got robbed again.
This man just gets robbed constantly on balls that he got robbed on just a pop out that should
have gone into the Diamondbacks dugout and instead gets caught.
There's just things at times about Corbyn Carroll right now that definitely feel very, very unlucky.
But it doesn't.
Oh, yesterday was the day.
Yesterday was two.
Those two plays?
Yeah.
It was like it felt like the story of Corbyn's season yesterday watching Cole Tucker,
who's a shortstop, make an incredible leaping catch on the track and, you know,
a right fielder, Robin RBI with a diving catch that if he had missed that,
Corbyn's probably getting an inside the Parker on that, I feel like so.
Here's the thing, though, I will say that.
And not to disagree with you, but what I will say is I don't know if that's the tale of
his season because at one point, we just saw him looking.
That's fair.
Incapable at the plate.
Whereas I think that's kind of more of an indication of what's been happening to him lately,
you know, why his batting average right now is still at 211, you know, and his OPS is still at
600.
He's been smoking some balls yet, yeah, they find a way to get.
caught spectacularly.
But tonight was a great night for the offense because they didn't need.
All they really needed was Tucker Barnard's output in order to beat the White Sox.
The White Sox didn't do a good job.
Of course, got to give a lot of credit to Ryan Nelson for his big night tonight,
huge night for Nellie.
He gave up a run early in the second inning.
He got himself into a little bit of a jam there in a second that looked like it was going
to turn even worse on him than it did.
He was able to kind of limit the damage there to just the one run.
he locked in after that and i mean man that's something we've talked about that trait i've talked about it a bit
about brandon fought exhibiting that trait i've talked about how that is a big time trait that you know both
zach gallin and merrill kelly have just the aces at the top of the staff their ability to have a bad
inning especially an early bad inning and then still lock in and you know give you what ryanelson was able
to give you tonight which is six strong innings he gave up six hits and just that one earn run he walked one
and struck out eight.
Fastball was working.
Did we lose Derek here?
What?
I think you went out on us a little bit.
Oh, no.
Yeah.
Okay.
My apologies.
My internet at home is as consistent as the starting lineup at times.
But what are your thoughts on Ryan Nelson's night?
I mentioned it earlier.
Like, I couldn't ask for anything more.
He was great.
Like I Tucker Barnhart said it in the post game as well like he threw a ton of strikes
tonight.
I think he threw 60 strikes tonight.
And there was a couple of times where it felt like maybe he got away with a couple
pitches because the White Sox are just a bad team.
But he did what he was supposed to do.
And he kept the team in a position to win.
And he gave up a few hits more so than you might expect to see on a 8K one earned run night.
But he limited that damage well.
And you know, if we're going to get a.
get these kind of outings out of Ryan Nelson, then, you know, he's doing his job. And that's all we can
ask from him. I'm not necessarily expecting a one earned run performance every night, but just,
just competitive performances that unlike that Padres game, like just give us, give us quality
starts, like, you know, throw the ball in the zone, but, you know, don't throw meatballs to these
guys. And, and, and I, I liked what I saw from Ryan tonight. I'm happy for him, too, because he probably
needed that. He might have gotten sent down if he had another disaster performance like he did
last time. Well, we were talking about that, right? And we are getting closer and closer to the
return of guys like Zach Gallen and Merrill Kelly. We know that, you know, the most likely,
there's going to be guys sent down to stay stretched out, right? They're going to need Ryan Nelson,
Tommy Henry, or Slate Cicconi, all the, maybe all, but mostly at least two of them probably to go
and stay available should something else happen to the starting rotation.
So it is kind of back to that preseason battle about which guy is really going to impress right now,
especially when it's very important.
This is a very important time for these guys to be bringing their best every single day,
even if it's against the team like the White Sox that we know have struggled this season
and have struggled historically as a franchise.
apparently according to Jesse's
uh Jesse's uh
jessy's interview with herb earlier today but
I mean there's uh there's just
not a lot of time left for these guys to
impress I think yeah I mean I would say especially
against a team like the White Sox though wouldn't you
like this is the type of team that we need we need the debacks to come in and
be like we're better than this team and we're just going to show it out here like
I understand that they're the worst team in baseball right now but I would argue that
Like that's that's when you need to show that you're a different caliber team the most.
Because you don't want to be in like a let's play down to their competition kind of kind of game with them, which I, you know, I think that this this team has had a tendency to do at times.
So I would say especially like, you know, looking over at the other team and seeing a bad baseball team and saying we're better than them.
We're going to, we're going to sweep this series or whatever.
Like that's the mentality that I like to see.
And hopefully that's the mentality they have.
I think it probably is.
And I also want to say, I will be damned if I'm not going to be excited about
beating any opponent at this point.
I think the Diamondbacks should feel that same way.
To hell with that.
These are all Major League Baseball teams.
They're all capable of winning.
This exact White Sox team just gave the Mariners quite the run in a four game series.
They only won one game, but that series was much closer than a blowout like the
Diamondbacks, you know, put on the White Sox tonight going...
you know, winning seven to one. It just, that question arises like, should we be excited about
beating teams like the white socks and beating teams like the angels and the nationals? It's like,
yes, because those are the trap teams. Those are the games that you absolutely can't afford to
lose, especially considering, you know, the way that this season is going for the National League.
This is a very tight field where all the teams have very close records.
And these games are what matters.
You can't take any of these games lightly because we already saw last year how much this impacted this team.
I mean, the Diamondbacks had a series against the White Sox right before the end of the season that they kind of thought they were going to come into and kind of push the White Sox around and get secure their spot in the playoffs.
They very much did not do that.
and then they continue to not do that against the Astros and needed the help of some losses in order for them to actually make the playoffs.
So, I mean, they cannot take these games lightly.
And these are, especially right now during this period of time when this team is still not close to being 100%.
These are not games that they can afford to lose.
So I think the Diamondback should absolutely be excited about beating the lowly goddamn White Sox.
And I think that they should come out tomorrow and try to put it on them again.
and I think they should try to make their dads unhappy on Sunday and send them home
losers on Sunday as well after getting swept by the Diamondbacks.
That should be the attitude right now.
It should be kind of a dire kind of situation where you want to capitalize on playing these
teams at this time when they are not playing good baseball.
These are bad teams.
I'm not going to make excuses for the Angels and the White Sox.
They're probably going to end their season at the end, you know, bottom of the AL and
and that is what most likely that, you know, is going to transpire, right?
But still, it doesn't mean that in the middle of the season,
they can't win a series against you and they can't, you know,
throw some losses on your record,
especially when the Diamondbacks are so close right now to being at 500 or above 500.
They're two games back from being 500.
This is all that we kind of wanted them to do during this period of time
where they were missing so many of their not only starting position players,
but they're starting rotation.
That's the biggest thing is,
is Ryan Nelson gave them such a great night
on a night where they needed him to
because they can't afford their starting pitchers
to have a six plus ERA like we,
like we've seen them have.
Yeah.
I mean, well,
you mentioned it like it's these games that you got to stack wins in
if you want to be a competitive good baseball team.
And I'm looking at the schedule here from, you know,
this season thus far.
And outside of the Rockies series, like, we haven't had too many easy series in this season this far.
We've played a lot of pretty good teams on paper.
Like there was that stretch where we played the Tigers and the Marlins.
But that even proves your point further where we play the Tigers and the Marlins.
And we went two and four against those two teams.
And those are teams that you do not want to be going two and four against.
Those are teams that you want to be winning those series going four and two at minimums, you know, going three and three and splitting between two of them.
fair, the Tigers are only two games below 500 themselves. They've been playing some decent
baseball this year. They're not in that much of a different spot that the Diamondbacks are
right now in this season. I will still, I would die on the hill of arguing the Diamondbacks
are a much more talented team than the Tigers. But when they played them, when you were looking
at the talent available to Tori LeVolo to have in his lineup and in his starting rotation,
you know, yeah, that they didn't have all of their weapons. They weren't at 100%. And, you know, again,
you can't take any team lightly, even a team like the White Sox, because they will beat you.
These are still professional baseball players.
They still are capable of going out there on any given night and putting up a ridiculous score.
And it's baseball.
So no one would even think twice about it, right?
So that's the reason why you can't, you know, kind of let your foot off the gas here just because you won game one.
The Diamondbacks have not won a lot of game ones.
They also have not swept a lot of teams.
So this would be a great opportunity this weekend to just keep the pressure on, keep applying that offense.
Like this offense has been really good because it does feel like, you know, it almost feels like you should look at the lineup tonight and see somebody have two home runs again and go three for four.
And when you look, it's not.
It's just contributions from the entire team.
It's nights like tonight that that are wins that we thought we would be seeing more often from this team based on the way this.
lineup is constructed. And tonight's lineup might have been, might have been Tori Lavello's best
lineup of the year, simply because I think he finally threw some of those righty,
lefty matchups out the window and had both Randall Gritchick and Jock Peterson in there. I know
Gritchick didn't go out and have almost a cycle again, but he still was one for four with a run
scored and again, contributed to the offense. And obviously, we know what Jock did with the boomstick.
Yeah, absolutely.
And I think that it just goes to show like injuries, like getting guys back is so big.
You know, we partially say that because like we have a guy like Perdomo hitting nine for us.
And it just, it feels like this is everything that we that we wanted the entire season.
Like let's got himself into a pickle tonight, my guy.
Yeah, not his not, not his best work, but also had a good solid hit.
So he did.
He did. But yeah, you're right.
Not his best, not his best work.
I wasn't.
I wasn't.
I wasn't pleased with it.
but that's okay.
It still brought me a lot of joy, though, you know?
It still made me happy somehow, even though it probably shouldn't have.
But I like what you.
I just want to say real quick, I like what you said about the lineup.
And like when you see a seven run game, you're probably like, oh, who hit a three run home run tonight?
Who had four RBI?
No, this was like one of the most balanced games that we've seen this far this season.
Like everybody came out.
Everybody was pretty much locked in.
Like you said, it was Catell and Christian that were really the guys that didn't contribute
much other than that.
And they deserve a night off.
It's fine.
I'm fine with them not performing.
Those guys have been doing it all season long.
Yeah, it's great to see Lordis go two for four.
It's great to see these guys, you know, come out as a team and, you know, do this.
They were three for eight with runners in scoring position.
They just, they had a great night.
It was a great night for this team on both sides of the ball.
But we do have to give our king snake to somebody.
And we are giving that honor to Ryan Nelson, six innings pitch, six hits.
only one earned, struck out eight, only gave up the one walk.
I mean, Nelly is just still kind of an anomaly to me, really, when you think about it,
because this guy is just so, I don't know, like he's, he's kind of so one-dimensional, right?
I mean, tonight he was actually doing pretty good.
He threw his four-scene fastball, 41% of the time.
He threw the cutter 28%.
He had his slider working at 14%.
He threw the curve ball a little bit.
he threw the curveball 11 times.
He threw the change up five times.
So he had his secondary stuff working a little bit better than we normally see.
And I think that's why he saw the results.
He got 13 whiffs tonight.
So Ryan Nelson, I mean, he would put it together.
And I think big part of putting it together is having a mix to his arsenal
because we know his fastball is good.
It maxed out, you know, tonight at like 97.5 miles per hour.
So he was throwing it nice and
hard average 95.2 but again he needs to have that secondary stuff working i think in order for
a meet successful that's what we saw him doing tonight that was the key key to his big night
yeah ryan was ryan was very good tonight he deserves that king snake i'm a big proponent of like
when a guy has a good game that you don't typically think we'll have a good game like that's the king
snake uh so we were about to give it to tucker barnhart so and tucker again not having a hit for
39 days and then coming out going two for four tonight with two RBI again i don't know if
tucker would want that i think Tucker would say go ahead and give it to Ryan you know give it to
right yeah i let's probably Ryan deserve it tonight i don't know if he'll see another one all
season but i'm happy for him and great performance out of Ryan tonight i agree i agree well of course

He was like,
Totry went up to him at Chicken and Pickle and was like,
we're going to play some ping pong because I've heard you're nasty Jesse.
And Jesse gets the ping pong paddle in his hand.
And he's walking behind Tootree walking out to the ping pong table.
And he's going, I'm not sure you want to get involved in his tootry.
And he's just, he's chirping.
them the whole time.
And it's just,
it's nothing funnier than Jesse talking shit.
Funniest thing I've ever heard.
It's amazing.
It's amazing.
Yeah,
because his shit talking is not real shit talking.
It's just,
it's just information.
He's just providing you with facts and that.
He's actually probably being polite.
He's being nice.

for sponsoring the count here.
So let's work the count for tonight's game.
Again, presented by Desert Financial.
Diamondbacks outscore the White Sox here by a score of 7 to 1.
Out hit the White Sox 10 to 8.
Runners in scoring position, Diamondbacks hit 3,75.
They were 3 for 8.
White Sox 1-11.
They were 1 for 9.
Extra base hits.
Diamondbacks had 3 to the White Sox 2.
There's were a little bit more impactful in those dingers.
And then we also had the hard hit percentage, which again, hardly ever makes sense sometimes on a night where the Diamondbacks outscore the White Sox 7 to 1, the White Sox somehow have a 44% hard hit percentage to the Diamondbacks 40.7%. This is why I tell Jesse numbers are dumb all the time right here. This is this right here, that last one, but everything else jives. Again, I know we already talked about it, but I don't want to dwell too.
much on the fact that it's the white socks it is the white socks they're not a very good baseball
team but i will say that their starting pitcher tonight has been good at times so i mean it's not
like we're talking about somebody who you know the you know the diamond back should have should
put this on but they did this is one of those nights where we finally saw their offense carry over
from one night to the next and it's a night where honestly they put up the expected you know runs
that they should against a team right now that is definitely in a worse position than the
Diamondbacks are.
Yeah.
I mean, I don't know how much more I can say on the White Sox thing.
Like I, we, we beat, we need to beat this team.
We need to stack wins against opponents like this.
Like they're clearly not very good.
They, they made, how about those airs tonight by the White Sox?
You see that?
I mean, that's, that's the sign of a, of a.
really bad baseball team.
Yeah.
And that's,
that's the type of team,
honestly,
that the Diamondbacks like ate up on last season.
Like you want to make some throwing mistakes while we're on the base paths.
We're going to,
we're going to step on your neck.
And that's what I want to see more from from the Diamondbacks this season going forward is
like capitalize on these on these mistakes that these teams are making against.
You make force them into making these,
these types of errors.
Like that's,
that's what that's what made the Diamondbacks a good baseball team last season.
And that's the identity of the roster.
And like we haven't seen enough of that nearly this season so far.
Well, what we saw was the Diamondbacks being the ones to make the mistakes.
Yeah.
And honestly, it was like tonight, it's not to say the White Sox were necessarily in it.
But once you saw those mistakes kind of happen and the Diamondbacks put up the runs,
you might as well have called the game at that point.
It felt like the air was kind of let out of the White Sox balloon.
They realized this was going south on them.
and they kind of cashed it in.
And we've seen that from the Diamondback side,
where we've seen the Diamondbacks do something similar,
where they just kind of phone it in after a certain point
because it felt like, you know,
they lost the lead.
They watched the opposition come back, you know, things like that.
So it's, you know, it's just nice that the Diamondbacks have things clicking.
And more importantly, it's nice to see them doing it consistently, right?
It's nice to see them starting to actually get on a role where we're not as concerned about the offensive woes,
the inconsistent offense that we were at one point.
And it feels a little bit more sustainable than them putting up, you know, 15 runs in one night and then to the next night against the very same opponent,
which is something I'm sure has happened at some point in the season.
But speaking of consistency, we did see, like I said earlier, Gino Suarez in the line.
up tonight. He was playing third again for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And of course, there's
some questions about that. He went one for two. He had two walks. He had the home run. The questions
were that Torrey kind of made a statement saying that they were going to pivot and go in a different
direction and give Blaze an opportunity at third base. It sounded, Damon, in the moment when he said it
like it was a bit more permanent than he intended to say, because we do have Tori here kind of
clarifying his comments and kind of actually telling us what his game plan is with his
platoon over there third between Blaze and Gino.
Yeah, I think I should probably clarify.
I got asked this a little while ago.
You know, pulling back Gino doesn't mean he's the two of the seven.
So it's five Gino two, two blades.
So I explained that that would kind of be my mindset.
So Gino's going to continue to get the majority.
already reps. I'm going to drip in Blaze, just see how it looks, and just keep pushing it
downfield. And if it goes one way or another, then I'll just, I'll read and react.
But I think everybody thought it was going to be five days for Blaze and two for Gino.
I believe in Gino. Gino has a lot of really good qualities. And I watched his workday
yesterday, his early work day yesterday, and he was getting after it. That's what I think is
going to lay the groundwork for a lot of successful at-bats.
I'm not saying he wasn't doing it before, but they just set my eyes on it yesterday.
And he's in a good spot.
He's not getting good results.
So I don't want to just completely bench him.
That's not what I'm about.
But I want to get in with the Blaze.
Blaise is there a little bit more playing time.
I get what he's saying, especially with Raldo Perdomo, Kevin Newman,
the situation that they have at shortstop, the playing time for Blaze is going to become less and less.
So it's understandable from the Blaze perspective that he wants to get time at third base.
he definitely made it sound like he was going to be pivoting and going in a different direction
other than Gino and then it's kind of surprised when things are taken out of context.
I think that for the most part, a lot of people, including, I'm sure Tori himself,
have been frustrated with Gino's offense.
And I'm sure Gino is frustrated with Gino's offense.
But, I mean, there's something to be said about some of his defense and perhaps some of the
plays he's made defensively that have saved games for this team versus, you know,
maybe having Blaze over there that might not be able to handle it.
Yeah.
But, I mean, one of your thoughts overall, like this, this isn't surprising.
It just sounds like Gino's going to get maybe some more days off and we're going to
see Blaze, but it's not going to be a lot.
It's going to be one every now and again.
And that still might just be until Alec Thomas returns when they might have to make another
roster move.
Yeah.
So, Gino through 14 days in June is two is tied in walks with his entire month of May total.
So I feel like, you know, we're-
Yeah, we're-
About one more time.
So in May, Gino had six walks and through 14 days of June, Gino has six walks.
I think, I think that could be a big factor.
like he just is not he was so aggressive just swinging out everything striking out constantly and like
if he if with these walks maybe he's seeing the ball a little bit better and maybe we can we can build
on that so like i i honestly like i remember jesse before the season saying like he didn't think
he thought maybe gino could be not very good this year i'm not sure if he said that on air or not
but he he mentioned it to us like he wasn't super high on gino and uh i i i push back on
because I was like he's pretty consistent you know I don't know that I don't know that I see him having like a
disastrous season it's been it was the fan graph projections that we were talking about specifically right
yeah yeah the fan graph projections were not pretty that's no doubt about that yeah but I I I just like
I think there's no way he's this bad of a baseball player because we've seen it in his whole career
he's been so consistent so like we just I hope he I hope he figures it out more hope he keeps you know
seeing the ball a little bit better because we really need him.
And like you said, like his defense is like underrated.
He's a good third baseman.
He's reliable.
He makes all the plays he should make like.
Blaze would playing a new position at a major league level.
I'm not sure that that would go so well.
So I'm, you know, we need Gino to step it up if we're going to be successful this season,
I think.
And hopefully today was a step in the right direction.

you so much, Mr. Grimm.
Thank you,
guys, for all you guys do.
And we couldn't do without you guys.
So appreciate you guys.
Absolutely.
You guys make this fun.
You guys make the,
yeah,
I mean, honestly,
me and Damon,
we like each other.
We spent 45 minutes in the parking lot last night
talking about social media.
So how could we not like each other?
Just a strategy planning session,
you know,
just getting our shit together.
That's all that night.
Yeah,
that's that we grind like that for you.
You don't stop. That's why we do it. When we were having that talk, we were like, how can we, how can we do more for our people?
Absolutely. Absolutely. And of course, the guy that does more for everyone than anyone around here, especially more than me and Damon, that's for sure, is Jesse Friedman, my thunder stick, your vice mayor. Jesse, another big win, another big night for the offense. I don't want to call it a big win because it's the white socks. And we kind of had this penciled in as hopefully a win, the game they should win, right? But I think.
think the bigger thing here is that the Diamondbacks were able to keep the offensive offense rolling
from what they were able to do last night against the Angels to this game.
Yeah, the offense, we talked about it yesterday, how they haven't exactly been the model of consistency,
even though they had definitely stepped things up. And, you know, maybe this is a sign that they are,
they are kind of moving in that direction. You got seven runs in this game. You got RBI by six
different guys in this game as well. So it was a variety of contributors tonight.
Gino Suarez, of course, hitting that solo home run on a 3-0 pitch.
He reached base three times in this game.
I know you guys touched on him a little bit earlier.
Certainly good to see him take a step in the right direction.
So, yeah, just a complete game for the debacks.
It is the White Sox, as you said.
This is not, you know, you're not exactly taking a huge victory lap or anything after game one of this series.
But the Diamondbacks did what they needed.
to do tonight.
I think if you win the series, take a victory lap.
If you sweep the series, absolutely take a victory lap, right?
I mean, it's still a baseball team that could give you a problem.
It's still one of those losses that, you know, again, even that Padres game really
wasn't a must win, even though Tori called it that, right?
It's the middle of the regular season.
It's hard to call any of these games must win.
But when you start losing to teams like the White Sox and the Angels and not losing a
single game but losing series. That's when you really start questioning, like if you're even
a contending team any longer. And I don't mean us because fans question it the minute you lose.
I'm talking about internally. You start feeling like maybe we're not, you know, what we think we are.
And that's that's a dangerous spot to be for a baseball team. Yeah, I mean, the Diamondbacks are
still in a kind of totally fine position, right? I mean, they're 34 and 36 through 70 games. It's not at all
where this team probably wanted to be at the 70 game mark of the season.
But you think about once again, all the guys that they've lost to be within,
I think it's a game right now of the third wildcard spot,
which is currently occupied by the Cardinals who've kind of gone on a nice run lately.
The Cardinals are still only 500.
You know, they think they're 36 and 36.
The Diamondbacks are 34 and 36.
So, you know, the debacks continue to be right there.
You've got an opportunity here, Derek, to try to sweep this series.
I know I wouldn't say that sweeping any series in this league is easy,
but Diamondbacks have an opportunity to do that over the next couple of days,
and that would allow them to get back to 500 for the first time in quite a while.
It's a careful balance of not putting too much pressure on yourself to sweep a series, right?
But then also being like, hey, we have a chance here, you guys.
We have a chance to go out there.
and at least over these next nine games,
win a lot of these next nine games.
And again,
it's not to take any of those opponents slightly,
the Angels, the White Sox.
The Nationals are playing much better baseball
than either of these two teams,
so they don't really deserve to be lumped in
with the Angels and the White Sox,
but still, they're a team where when you look at what they've done this season,
you look at their record, you think,
all right, that's a team.
The Diamondbacks at least has a chance.
And honestly, believing in this team should probably win
that series against the national.
But that's just, that's just, that's just hopes, Jesse.
That's just, that's just opinions.
That's not fact.
That's not baseball games actually being played.
We know how bad the starting rotation has been for this team.
And we know how much of a problem that has been even against bad baseball teams because
the starting rotation has not been very good.
But man, they got a big game out of Ryan Nelson tonight.
I mean, not only did they get length, but he went out there.
He goes six innings, gives up just the one earn, strikes out eight.
I mean, we kind of went over his numbers with his breaking stuff a little bit,
but actually was throwing his breaking stuff at a decent percentage,
which allowed him to work his fastball even more, right?
Right.
Like when you're able to throw that,
that breaking stuff,
that fastball is so much more effective.
Yeah,
we talked with,
we talked with Tori after this game.
Of course,
we talked with Ryan himself.
We also talked with Tucker Barnhart,
who is behind the plate for this one.
So, yeah,
we'll start with,
I guess we'll start here with Ryan Nelson.
Here's what he had to say about his,
about his outing tonight.
I felt like I was jumping ahead of guys
and also just throwing a good mix out there today.
It felt like a curbstle on the slider
was both really good tonight
and mixed the changeups in there too.
And it allowed a little bit more freedom with the basketball.
Is that the first time this year
you felt like you had that many pitches work at the same time?
Yeah, definitely.
I think we've been working really hard
on getting those secondaries locked in
and I think tonight was the first step in being able to confidently use him like that
and expanding with them and throwing them in the zone in good spots.
So I think that it just all kind of came together tonight.
13 whiffs tonight, Jesse, five on the fastball, but three on the slider and three on the cutter.
So, I mean, again, that secondary stuff really seemed to help him have a good mix
and like was the key to him being as effective as he was tonight.
100% yeah i think 13 whiffs i believe is is tied for the third most uh in his career we don't we
don't see ryan nelson rack up whiffs uh like that too often frankly the eight strikeouts was it
was a career high as well which you guys probably already touched on uh yeah this was this is a
little bit of a different version of ryan nelson i thought a guy who just seemed more
comfortable and confident throwing his secondary pitches than we've really ever seen uh and
And as you alluded to, he did get whiffs on the fastball in the cutter.
And he also got whiffs on everything else.
He got at least one swing and miss on every single pitch that he threw, all five of his pitches,
which is for him in particular, a really big accomplishment.
So, yeah, you know, maybe this is the start of something for Nelson.
I think the sort of obvious takeaway is that you need to see more than just one,
one outing like this, especially given the opponent.
Nelson has had kind of, you know, good outings here and there,
but it did feel a little different today with how much swing and miss there was.
I was going to say the seven and two-thirds outing that he had that was a career high,
not that long ago definitely felt like he was taking steps in the right direction,
but that was less about the whiffs and just more about his efficiency and how low he was able to keep his pitch count.
And the defense behind him that.
And the defense behind.
Yeah.
Tonight he got some good defense, but definitely not the defense he got that.
night tonight it was all about the offense and their production i think that allowed him uh obviously
i mean he didn't get that early he got himself into a jam there in the second inning but he was able to
get out of it there was a lot of good things about ryan's outing i mean the the offense was there
and that was great but for the most part it it really felt valuable uh especially considering
the position this team is in with their starting rotation to have nelson go out there and be as good
as he was tonight yeah we also talked with uh with tucker barnhart who of course caught this
game about kind of what was working for Ryan and here's what he had to say.
The answer is everything.
We talked a lot about using his fastball quite a bit, a lineup that felt like this fastball
really played against and it seemed to open up the breaking balls, open up to cutter,
open up the change up.
He did a great job of really power of the strikes.
I think he threw upwards of 60 plus strikes tonight.
And whenever you got a guy doing that, it's often.
on the heels, makes them expand the strike zone, swing and miss.
Everything was working for a lot.
Is that as good as you've seen in the throw so far this year?
For me personally, yeah, I told me that it is the best I've ever seen this slider.
Even spring training during the season.
It's been a work in progress.
It's been tink green a lot with it.
And I'm really happy for him to be able to find one that was consistent, that he was confident
and I was able to really execute it at a high, high level tonight.
I wasn't able to listen to anything he was saying because I was just staring into his blue,
blue eyes, Jesse.
That man looks like a handsome supervillain from the MCU.
I can't put my finger on why he's so odd, but like that was a very handsome Tucker Barnardt tonight.
I just have to say, and he himself had himself a great night.
I mean, we kind of joked about it a little bit, but, man, I mean, it's been a long time since he had his last hit.
May 7th. Man hasn't had a hit in 39 days. Tonight he goes two for four with two RBI.
Had to feel good, but Damon kind of discussed how afterwards it sounded like he was a little reluctant to kind of be celebrated too much on his night.
Yeah, some people in the chat spotted the vest in the background.
You might have seen that in his locker. And I also spotted that while we were talking with
Tucker, and I asked him about that.
So here's what Tucker had to say about wearing the vest after.
Oh, let's go.
Did you wear the vest?
Yeah, it's the first time.
It's just really cool.
I thought Nellie deserved it anyway, but they, uh, the guys thought I did.
So it's cool.
Seawald, who gives you that?
Or how does that?
Yeah, it wants a guy that does the talking after the game.
So we've been doing it a lot lately, uh, talking after games, which is fun, for sure.
It's felt good to get that big kids.
Yeah, it's been a grind. I felt like it was been a month since I got him hit,
and it turned up it had been a month since I got hit.
But it's one of those things, man.
It's just to be the same guy every day and just do my job, be here to help our team in whatever role that I can.
I love the role that I'm in.
I love this group of guys.
We love this organization.
So it's been a pleasure.
I'm really, really thankful to be here.
Do you have to give a speech when you get the vest?
Yeah, it's kind of to you, whatever you want to say.
So keep that journal.
Yeah, sure.
Who's that the best speech, the best victory speech?
Blaze, Blaze, for sure.
I won't go into detail, but.
It's a blaze moment.
Yeah, it was.
That's a very good way of putting it.
That's amazing.
Damon was 100% right, by the way.
Damon said earlier that when we hear from Tucker,
you know he's inevitably going to say,
Ryan actually deserves the best.
And he was right about that.
He said he said that Tucker would say he deserved the king snake too.
So, so yeah.
So this is what happened, Jesse.
Derek had Tucker down as King Snake earlier in the game when he was two for two.
And I texted him.
I said, I think Ryan Nelson deserves it tonight.
And then we were talking about Tucker Barnhart earlier on the show.
And we talked about how we almost gave him King Snake.
And I said, I bet you Tucker would say Ryan deserved it tonight.
And then you get from the locker.
room just coincidentally, him saying those exact words.
It couldn't work out better than that.
It's insane.
You couldn't work out any better.
Also, Blaze having the best speech is amazing because Blaze confessed that he did not think
he had the best speech.
Yeah.
But he did say he just went up there and said the F word a lot.
And that absolutely.
He did not say that.
No.
He said a lot of curse words that he can't say is what he said.
He did say that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was, it was funny for Tucker to say that.
sure because yeah blaze blaze did seem pretty like self self-conscious of his of his speech when we talked
about it he also didn't didn't go into much detail about it other than what you said that he just
said he he apparently said a lot of a lot of curse words that he yeah that he can't repeat um so uh yeah
it was it was it was pretty funny to to hear that another another blaze moment reference another
blaze moment jesse everybody's calling you the people's journalist in our chat now so i have to ask
What bat did Jock use to hit the home run?
Whose bat did he use?
Yeah, well, I'm going to fail everyone on that front.
Did get that information?
Jock wasn't around after the game.
Usually, I mean, we only, we generally speaking, get our choice of, you know, I mean,
you know how it is, like maybe a couple of guys after the game.
And on that note, I will say real quick, we actually requested to speak with Aeohenio Suarez after this game.
And we were declined.
Gino did not want to speak with the media after this one.
Obviously, this was a good game for him.
So, you know, it wasn't your typical like, oh, guy just really had a rough one and just doesn't want to talk about it immediately afterward.
Gino did have a good game.
He walked a couple of times.
He hit that home run, as we mentioned earlier.
And yet he still didn't want to speak to the media.
And I don't, I mean, I don't want to speculate too much on why that is.
I imagine it could be like this is, this is just one game.
And I want to, I want to kind of prove myself over a little.
longer period of time before I, you know, talk with anyone about having successes.
So I guess I did just speculate on why we, why we were able to talk to it.
That's fairly good speculation because, again, like you said, you think after a night where
you hit a home run and you got two walks, you showed a lot of patience and discipline at the
plate and you were rewarded for it, that you would be okay with talking to the media.
But it is just one game.
and Gino is in a position right now where Tories made it publicly known that he's giving Blaze Alexander reps at third base to see who works out best there.
And that's, I mean, that's questioning the future of Gino over there.
That's questioning the present of Gino over there.
So again, I think that he has a lot of work to put in.
And I think that there's a lot of people that still believe in him internally.
And I don't think that, you know, again, Tory clarifies.
we showed your video from earlier where he kind of clarified that he meant more of like
Blaise getting two out of seven not Blaze getting five out of seven meaning that they were
like replacing Gino over there but I mean Gino just he's been one not not the most disappointing
thing at all this season but one of several guys who have had a disappointing season so far and
I mean again it's he's not the sole sole focus point but he is a guy that
the Diamondbacks went out and got, and we all thought that it was going to be a solution at third base.
And, you know, now here we are back to potentially at another platoon situation at third base.
And that doesn't feel great.
But what had to feel great is hitting that home run.
It was Gino's sixth of the season.
And I know Tori had some comments afterwards about Tories, about Gino's bomb.
Yeah, he's genuinely excited for him.
You know, he's working his butt off.
He's had a lot of good work days.
I know I mentioned pregame.
that I thought he had a fantastic early BP session yesterday.
I think everybody was really, really excited for him, genuinely excited for him to get a 3-0 fastball and hit as hard as he did.
I mean, again, it's, there's a lot of people ruining for Gino, a lot of people that want him to get back on track.
It's just, you know, again, baseball is one of those sports where it feels like, like what we saw with Corbyn Carroll, the harder you're trying.
to get it back on track, the more it doesn't work out for you.
Yeah, I mean, the leash here is, despite how Tori clarified things earlier today,
the leash here is pretty clearly short.
Like the Diamondbacks are, they're not at the point where they're moving on from Gino,
but they're rounding third and heading for home on that front is sort of what it feels like.
And, yeah, Blaze is going to get some opportunities there.
We saw that earlier this week.
but Gino has started the last two games in a row.
And yes, what Tori said the other day was very much, very much misinterpreted.
Granted, he was a little vague.
It was a little.
I told him to that.
He was misinterpreted, but it was his own words that aided that misinterpretation because
he said they were pivoting and going to go in a different direction.
Like when you say that, that typically means that you're going to give another guy a chance
to start over there, like all the time.
and not just saying, oh, hey, we're going to give Blaze a couple of starts, especially, like, it makes sense because Blaze's playing time is going to be impacted by Geraldo Perdomo returning, by Kevin Newman still being here.
And there's a good chance of Blaze still is that that man that they select to send down when Alec Thomas comes back.
But in the meantime, you kind of want to use this period of time you have until Thomas returns to make that decision, right?
Like you want to see, maybe we put Blaze there.
not only is he capable of handling it defensively,
but he provides us with some pop, you know,
from the bat that we're not getting right now from Gina.
Yeah, that's a great point.
I mean, I think with Alec Thomas nearing his return
and a roster decision looming,
you might as well put yourself in a position
to just kind of gather a little bit more information.
And in this case,
gathering more information means like playing Blaze Alexander a little bit.
Because as you said, Perdomo is back.
Blaze isn't going to play a whole lot of shortstop at this point.
You know, you've got.
Kevin Newman to play, you know, behind Catel Marte at second base.
He's basically a backup at every position, getting blazing some opportunities at third
base.
Like, that's the best way to get him some reps out there in this time.
And it also makes logical sense with the way that Gino has struggled lately.
So, yeah, we'll see how it looks over the next few days.
I mean, I don't think the five and two situation is necessarily here to stay for a long time.
even that still sounds very fluid where, you know, I wouldn't be like,
Gino if he has a couple more good games, like maybe we're talking about Gino is your
everyday third basement again in a few days.
And maybe they do wind up sending Blaze back to AAA to get some more regular opportunities
there.
So it'll be interesting to see how all this unfolds.
But it's definitely not the, it's not as big of a change as a lot of us thought initially.
Yeah, no, I agree.
Well, of course, Jesse, we know I am a very,
consistent truth teller. I never lie. None of us lie on this show, in fact. So it's very hard for
us to recognize what is and isn't a lie. But we do know that the numbers are with us. They also don't
lie. So what do you have for your number tonight from tonight's game? Tonight's number is 41,
which is a percentage. That is the percentage of Ryan Nelson's pitches tonight that were
foreseen fastballs, which may not sound very low, Derek, but that is, that is in fact the lowest
four-seem fastball usage of Ryan Nelson's career.
41% is the lowest that he has ever had in any outing in the major leagues since debut.
Yeah, there were some.
Usually over 50%, right?
Yeah, yeah, we've seen a lot of well over 50s.
I think we might have even seen some in the 60 range.
But yeah, it goes back to what Tori and I guess what you guys saw,
what Ryan and what Tucker Barnhart was also talking about,
where he just had a pitch mix tonight.
He had more weapons to go to in two strike counts.
Tucker talked about the slider in particular earlier.
I did think that pitch looked like it took a step forward.
Location-wise, he was pretty consistent in getting it to,
you know, sort of that glove side, outside edge to right-handed hitters.
And also the shape of it.
Tucker also talked about how the shape has just been more consistent
or was more consistent in this game.
We've seen so many iterations of the Ryan Nelson slider this year, right?
I mean, in spring training, it was 90 miles an hour one game.
It was 84 the next.
Then it would go back to 90.
But he was just messing around with a bunch of different things,
trying to find something that works.
And you need to see more.
Once again, I will continue to say that.
We need to see a little bit more before I think this is like a truly a new version of
Ryan Nelson, but it was certainly an encouraging sign for him today.
Well, Jesse,
I know you might be working on a little special thing here for Father's Day this weekend.
Did you want to give the people a little preview of what you're working on?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, this will be out in a couple of days, given that Sunday is Father's Day.
Yeah, I'm just asking some Diamondbacks, some fathers on the team, of which there are like seven or eight or nine, something roughly.
There's a lot of young guys on the team that aren't dads yet.
But yes, we know that they all have Paul Seawald as their dad.
We know that.
Right, right.
Yeah, I'm actually just interviewing Paul Seawald about what it's like to be the dad of the clubhouse.
That's the only interview I had to do.
No, yeah, I'm talking with a bunch of the dads on the team just about the challenges of being a major league player while also, you know, trying to be somewhat present for your kids, like at least as much as you can reasonably.
It's not easy.
Given the demands of the job. No, no, it certainly is not.
And I think the idea there is especially when you're a major league, you know, ball player and athlete, your time is limited, right?
But something to remember is that all of our time is limited.
We're not here for a long time.
We are here for a good time.
And, of course, make sure to appreciate your dads this weekend, go out, make sure go see your dad.
Give him a call.
My dad isn't around anymore, but I did get very much to celebrate Father's Day early today with my daughter.
I don't think that there was any more of a bonding experience than could have been,
then me and my daughter at Dave and Busters cheating a machine together as a unit.
We were trying to get some extra tickets.
And it's that one where you drop the coins in and then it knocks other coins off the ledge.
You know what I'm talking about.
Dave and Busters is basically a kiddie casino.
And we were trying to go for the big hall.
And me and my daughter basically were pulling a heist off together.
And what better bonding experience is there than cheating of,
video game with your daughter together.
We had a great time, but spend that time with your family, with your loved ones.
We hope you guys have a wonderful Father's Day.
Shout out to all the dads out there.
Speaking as one myself, I know you're underappreciated.
I know there's a good chance the gifts are going to suck, but we love you.
We appreciate you.
We thank you for all that you do.
And we know it's not an easy job out here to both be a dad and a professional athlete,
especially. It's a very demanding
gig, and I know
of course those guys do a great job
at doing their best to handle it.
And shout out to all
the dads out there again. I hope you guys
have a wonderful Sunday. Jesse
got anything else from the clubhouse
before we go? Yeah, you guys
might have already seen this. I tweeted
out. I know other people did as well. Scott
McGuff will be the Diamondbacks
opener for tomorrow's game that had
not yet been announced until as
of just a few minutes ago. And we were downstairs.
ruined my night.
You absolutely ruined my time.
Scott McGubb is going to start.
Such a good time before that.
He's going to just be the opener, of course.
Tommy Henry, it sounds like we'll be the bulk reliever behind him.
We saw the same thing in San Diego, of course.
So, yeah, it works.
Hopefully it works.
See what happens.
I did then.
I mean, that game had a lot more to do with the offense than McGuff or Tommy Henry necessarily.
But, yeah, it was a win in this office.
and certainly has been rolling here over the last couple of days.
Well,
don't forget to go get that polo shirt on Sunday, by the way,
great day to come out to the ballpark and see the finale.
So get your polo shirt.
I think they have the four home run shirt tomorrow, right?
So it's a whole weekend of giving stuff.
If you haven't gotten your dad a gift,
just saying you can go to two baseball games,
get some free stuff,
and then show up at like dinner on Sunday with a bevy of Diamondbacks gifts for dad.
I'm just throwing that out there.
But of course, we do appreciate your time.
We appreciate you, whether you're buying the gifts or you're getting them
or free from the Diamondbacks.
Of course, you can follow us on Twitter.
I'm at K-M-K-M-A-M-K.
Jesse is at Jesse N. Friedman.
The people's producer, Damon Dogg, is at Damon Dog.
That's D-A-W-G.
And we are, of course, Damon's dogs.
Park Park.
Our show is at P-H-N-X underscore D-Backs,
but of course, all roads lead to at P-H-N-X underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
We hope you guys have a wonderful weekend, especially you dads out there.
We will see you back here on Monday for our 1 p.m. show.
Make sure if you haven't had a chance to check out Jesse's on the record,
you check out his preview for this series with the White Sox,
with our guy, Erb from the CHGO, a White Sox podcast.
We love Herb around here.
Herbs the best.
So make sure to check that out.
And of course, at least remember, we're not the White Sox franchise.
That's something.
I probably should have waited to end it with that.
That's a good zinger.
I'm supposed to be the one.
You're supposed to be the one roasting the white sogs.
I forgot.
But of course, thank you guys.
Again, so much for stopping by.
We will see you on Monday.
And again, have a wonderful weekend.
Again, thank you for your time and remember kids.
Baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun.
When you root for any team other than the White Sox, got them.
