fucking go. Let's go. Welcome in to the
P. H&X D-Backs podcast.
My name is Derek Montia,
occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX.
This man next to me is the father. He is the
overlord and he is the Jacob. It's the father
overlord Jacob himself. Faj. Baby,
what a win the night. What a win. And this is going to be
the second show this week where my co-host is going to be
whispering due to people sleeping very close.
So I'm going to scream extra
just for you.
I have a very small house and a very small child.
We'll wake up if I get too loud.
It's like ASMR.
I just need you to get amped,
but at that level, that level.
He's got a little drinky poo.
Cheers to you, sir.
Cheers to all of our friends out there
for joining us for this one.
Because holy shit, what a game.
The Arizona Diamondbacks win in 10 innings
by the score of 7 to 5 over the San Diego Padres.
Of course, that gets.
their record up to 44 and 45.
And I mean, we, once again, we're toying with it.
We're flirting with it.
So, Jacob, I'm going to send him up.
I'm sorry, I'm saying.
We're almost up at the top of about 500, baby.
But man, what a great win.
Obviously, we know last night's game was a heartbreaking loss.
This one, of course, makes things a little better.
Maybe this one shouldn't have gone to extra innings.
maybe the Diamondback should have done their best to take care of business early on,
but hey, it is what it is.
They are now three and four in extra innings games this season
and hand the Padres their first loss in extra innings at home at Petco Park.
Speaking of which, we will be joined by the one and only Thunderstick himself,
Jesse Friedman from Petco Park here in a little bit.
But man, what a game.
And of course, we named yesterday's episode Jacob roller coaster based on the ups and downs of it.
This one had very.
similar ups and down. Good times and bad that we experienced all throughout this game.
It's been the whole week. Like, can this team just like ever? Can this team realistically just
ever make anything easy? No, no, no, that wouldn't be fun. That would be fun. They tread water
better than any other team I've ever seen. It's, I mean, that's, that's the thing is, is that
these games, of course, we know what happened in Los Angeles. You had a, a game that you should
of one that you let slip through your fingers due to Paul Seawald.
That happens again in game one of this series that he should have had.
And unfortunately,
Seawald couldn't close the door.
Tonight, you got to give credit where credit is due, the bullpen.
They bent.
They let things get close,
but they did not break,
especially there in extra innings.
They did a great job of coming in.
I mean, guys that we don't normally see come in in high leverage situations,
Vieira,
Inberto Castiano's looking like a slim, sexy, local sex symbol.
This stuff was filthy.
Like, some of those curveballs that he was winging up there, like, I don't know if he knew where they were going, but they landed.
I love that you have to stay so quiet.
And I know how you're dying internally inside because you and I were texting.
And there was a lot of holy shit going on with this game.
I mean, of course, the Diamondbacks had, uh,
you know, an opportunity there, like early on in the second inning,
Christian Walker singles he gets on, Gino walks,
Kevin Newman gets an RBI single that ties the game in the second,
tied up at 1-1.
This one kind of felt like it was going to be a low-scoring affair
with the way that both starting pitchers were going.
And then, of course, we have a big incident with one of those starting pitchers
and hopefully not lasting ramifications.
Brandon Fott got hit by a comebacker,
tonight he was removed in the fifth inning after being hit in the left ankle after making a pitch.
The official diagnosis for now is a left ankle contusion, and the x-rays are allegedly negative.
I don't know that for sure. I'm basing it on the chat.
So I say allegedly because you know this chat, this chat's gotten me into trouble, Jacob, more than once.
So I can't necessarily always trust them 100% of the time.
But the offense tonight was what it was.
They did a good job, of course, of, you know, generating some runs and giving this team a lead.
And unfortunately, you know, Brandon Fott getting removed from the game is big.
It's big if it's lasting, obviously, do the Diamondback shortage on starting pitching.
It's an absolute disaster, quite frankly.
It's Zach Gallen and then our minor league team basically at that point.
Coming into the year, everybody thought you were going to have Gallen, Merrill, Fott, Monty,
And, and, and, and, um, erod.
And, and, you did, you forgot his name.
You, you just, you just, you just edited a short about him like an hour ago and you forgot
his name because you, just like these people, don't think he's a real person because you've
never seen him actually pitch in a baseball game for this team.
He's just a fabricated, uh, human being.
It's for tax ride off purposes.
I think.
Let's, let's go one, let's go one through five as it stands right now.
Zach.
Oh, I hate this.
Are you, are you, are you suggesting that Brandon Fott isn't part of this?
I mean, I would like to think so.
I would like to think so.
But it's, it's Zach, Ryan, Slade, Yilbert Diaz, and Christian, made up.
According to Steve Gilbert, Yilbert Diaz, we'll get the start on Monday.
Yes, that's the, that's the rumor.
We're just, you know, sometimes you take your tire to discount or a tire place, no free ad, sorry.
and you have them replace the tire.
And sometimes you just keep stopping by your local gas station on your way to work
and buying a thing of Fixa Flat and putting it in there.
Right now, the Diamondbacks are just buying some Fixa Flat.
All right.
I mean, they have good tires.
They're on order that's just taking a long time for them to get here.
But of course, big shout out to Lordus Guriel.
He hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give the Diamondbacks the lead there,
albeit temporary.
but Goreal has 10 multi-hit games in his last 15.
And to be honest, he's one of those guys that has come back online
and has been such a huge part of this recent run.
Gabriel Moreno, another guy that's kind of been back.
I didn't get a chance to grab the statistic,
but I think they said he was hitting 500 prior to that at bat
over the last week or so.
And I mean, that's been, or I think it might have been on this road trip.
That's huge for this team to have Gabby back,
to have Lourdes back. These are the guys that are really missing, you know, and Corbyn that that
aren't contributing to the, you know, offense right now on a regular basis.
Yeah. Lurdis is driving the ball. I mean, like, at his best, he drives the baseball, right?
And I think he's known for being one of those super streaky guys.
Yes. He's always been that.
This is completely expected. He's the hottest hitter on the planet for a month and a half, and he goes,
ice cold for two months. It just
kind of is the way that he's always been.
The wonderful Toronto Blue Jays fans
that we talked to after that, you know,
trade happened, warned us
of that when it gave to Lourdes
Gurriel Jr. And they weren't wrong.
And of course, I appreciate
their honesty and their candor when it came
to that. But Lordus, again,
just a big piece of the offense
recently. And
Kevin Newman,
Ehuenio Suarez,
the guys there
at the bottom half, you know,
bottom portion of the lineup.
They got the job done tonight, too, for this team.
Kevin Newman was two for three with a run scored in RBI.
Gino, one for three, two RBI, one walk, now hitting 203 with a 613 OPS.
Does that make people want to DFAM a little less?
I know, I'm really, I'm grasping at Strazier right now.
I just, I don't know what other options we have there.
But I do feel like his numbers, if you look at his numbers over, you know, the last three
weeks, they're much better than anything that he's put together the rest of the season.
No, he's definitely seems like he's seeing the baseball better.
Like, it definitely seems like he's, he's taking walks a lot.
I still want to see him start impacting the baseball.
It seems like a majority of his hits are just thinking about the singers.
Yeah, like I need him to start hitting the baseball hard.
Like, I just, like, you know what, I,
you know, I, the thing about it that I like recently is his patience, because obviously,
He was free swinging.
He was striking out a lot.
And it feels like I'm seeing him walk way more often lately than we're seeing him strike out.
That's good.
Of course, it's a way to contribute if you're not able to have that power.
Sometimes you can't just reach down and find it.
So you find other ways to at least get on base.
He's been doing that for this team a lot recently.
And, you know, again, he's just a guy that is trying somehow some way to contribute.
As much as we as fans are frustrated watching him,
And the struggles he's had.
You know he's way worse.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You know, he's really living with himself.
Yeah.
But, okay, let's see what else we got.
This game, though, I mean, really, it comes down to Brandon fought the results of, you know, how he feels tomorrow.
Like they said on the broadcast, this is the kind of injury that most likely is going to hurt more and more as time passes rather than get easier.
but he had everything working with him for him tonight.
He allowed only five hits and one earned run entering that fifth inning.
And then he gave up a double to Kim,
who was just a thorn in the Diamondback side all season.
All season, but especially in this series, it's felt like that.
And then he gets hit by a comebacker by Luis Arise,
four innings pitch, seven hits allowed, one earned, zero walk, 6K,
through 62 pitches.
And that's probably the most frustrating part.
is that he was only at 62 pitches there in the fifth inning.
Lord knows how efficient he could have been going forward,
but there's a good chance that this game might not have had to get
as exciting as it did if Brandon Fott could have given this team,
you know, a few more innings, unfortunately.
You know, he gets hit.
When was the last time you saw?
I mean, I guess Merrill is extremely efficient,
but these last four or five starts for Brandon Fott,
I don't know when I've seen somebody be as efficient as he is.
Obviously, he hits an end where the wheels seem to fall off.
But, man, he is just kind of mowing through the lineup when he's on.
And it's like I keep, I keep stat watching.
This is really bad.
I like watch his ERA for like every inning that he goes through because I like,
like it's a stock.
Like I'm like, I'm like, he's going to get it under four.
he's going to get it under four and then he's like the eighth inning and he gives up a three run home run and you're like yeah
yeah because we wanted to we feel like he he has pitched better than the numbers
uh absolutely display i guess than the story told by his stats of course though the bigger thing there is
that brandon fought has been able to give this team more quality starts this season than anyone else
and he's been able to give them more length than anyone else so if he misses any amount of time
it's a disaster, Jacob, it's a disaster.
It's a disaster.
I'm going to say it.
I'm going to be hyperbolic.
I am going to be dramatic.
It's a fucking disaster if Brandon fought misses any time.
But you know who stepped up today?
You're the guy you're texting me about.
You demanded the king snake tonight because he fucking deserved it.
Kevin Ginkle was that dude tonight.
He was that dude when called upon.
He came into a game.
again, you know, I tried to make excuses for Paul Seawald because of how quickly Paul Seawald had to get up and get ready there in, you know, in last night's game.
Kevin Ginkle, same thing, had to get up in a very urgent manner and get prepared.
And he did. And he did. He went.
Yeah. He went and he went hard. This man, after we see our guy Brandon Fott leave, comes in and strikes out both.
and Profar and Jake Croninworth to maintain the one run lead,
then he comes back in the sixth inning and strikes out two more.
And that's why Kevin Ginkle is absolutely the king snake,
because that moment, well, maybe we'll say a king snake for a moment.
We'll say a king snake, because that was just such a huge point
where you really felt the momentum was shifting.
You felt like the tide was turning a little bit,
even prior to
fought needing to be removed
from this game.
And Kevin Ginkle just came in
with such ferocity.
He just came in and absolutely
dominated the Padres in his time
in this game. It got me pumped up.
It made me think old Kevin
Ginkle is back. The ginkle
the gink we once knew and loved is back.
And man,
just what a big moment for this team,
especially considering how close this game ended up being.
Like, things could have really gone out of
control if the reliever that Tori chose that Tori called upon and that you know in that kind of
emergency situation wasn't ready to answer the call has it been since the postseason last year since
we've seen Kevin Ginkle come off the mound with that type of like yeah yeah I mean he has he
has been he has been he has been two six he's had his ups and downs right he hasn't been as
dominant as we saw, you know, last year. And what's wild is his ERA right now is almost identical to
what it was when he got sent down to Reno last year. And I remember when he did, we were like
Ginkle of all people. Like there's a lot of people you could choose right now, but Ginkle made the
most sense just based on options and things like that, right? But he came back even though he wasn't,
even though it wasn't warranted that he got sent down. He just came back and was even better.
Yeah, found a way to be even better.
And I felt like tonight was that, like, final ultimate form of Kevin Ginkle that we've seen at times that just absolutely shuts down the opposing offense.
And he's the guy that made us question at times.
Maybe this should be our closer.
And this is why.
Yeah, he's, when I tell you that when he got the strike out to get out of the first and third that he just got sprung into and he turns around and he hits the, I can't tell you how fast.
I got out of bed and did the same thing.
I bet you yelled then.
I bet you made some noise then.
I know it for a fact.
I know I was yelling a lot of curse words around my house,
but that's only because my daughter isn't here,
so I'm allowed to do that.
The bottom of the ninth was pretty impressive there for this team
to get to extra innings, of course.
I know that they gave up the lead,
and I know that this bullpen wasn't perfect,
but you have to give credit where credit is due,
considering that once again this kind of turned into basically a bullpen game due to how due to fought needing the leave.
Man supply gives up two earn runs and two thirds of an innings pitched.
Bryce Jarvis gives up one earn run.
And then Brian Thompson, of course, gave up a big hit that allowed that earn run for Bryce Jarvis to score.
But he was very good at the rest.
After giving up that hit, he was very, very good.
And I'm not saying that just because I, he's my best friend.
I'm just saying that just because.
But one in the third innings pitch for Ryan Thompson.
Did you see the stat that was it Jack Summers that put the stat out?
Which Ryan Thompson.
Ryan Thompson has now given up six of his nine inherited runners.
He's allowed them to score.
But he's like, his ERA is still.
Lights out.
Lights out.
Yeah.
1.72 ERA.
So.
Oh, yeah.
Like, sorry, you're going to have to eat those runners.
But what did you think about BIR?
are coming in there.
You know, actually, so I've been super active
in the Discord over the last, like,
I don't know, chat, back me up on this,
maybe month or so. Like, I joined
the Discord for a good amount of games.
And I said, going into
the 10th inning, I said, give me
multiple runs and give me
Viera. Because, to me,
it meant that it was a comfortable, like,
okay, we've got a three-run lead,
but a three-run lead is still a saved situation.
And some guys... What about extra innings with
Viera in there in a tie ball game? Or a game
where the nine back just got the lead actually is what I should say is really what I should talk about
but that was interesting yeah other than Castiano's where are you going to go because see what's not
available I think the the idea there is that Vieira has been good in a small sample size right so
he's been really he's getting here really good I know I well I mean yeah but still like
it's not I mean I was surprised honestly umberto castianos like were you
you not surprised does not see seawald in there in that situation i don't know man he's had a tough
week and i just like i don't know i don't know it's that's a tough that's a tough call for me it's a
really tough call i mean i know fans probably didn't want to see him in there that's for sure did you
did you like did you like did you like did you like no no no no no no like like let me stay like
let me finish this oh by viera i love that i fucking love that yeah that was as transparent as it could be
he wanted to stay so bad and it was like uh brother you only got one out i'm sorry you gave up two walks
you know you're kind of like i get it though because when you come into the game as a reliever
the you you are still kind of warming up right and like you see relievers often you know
get behind in the count when they first come into a game and you as a fan grown and you're like oh
boy this fucking guy and honestly it's it's it's them still dialing in right it's still them trying to
that strike zone find where they're at and that's not easy it's not an easy thing to throw a baseball
in an area this big and just all of a sudden magically be able to do it when you were just
sitting on your ass fucking 10 minutes ago watching this game as a spectator like the rest of us so
you know again I think that part of that was you did see vera start to find the strike zone and
start to pinpoint his pitches there a bit more and that's probably why he wanted to stay in he was
getting there he was ready but at that point it was just I think you
go to Castiano's because of, you know,
Umberto's a vet at this point, kind of, right?
I mean, he's, he's been around for a very long time.
And even though his numbers are terrible right now, I mean,
that's the guy that, uh, I mean, he was really, really good in his last outing as well.
I think he, you know, he gave up one hit or I think two innings pitch.
So I understand going to him there and it seemed to be the right call because he got the job done.
I think, in a big situation.
Elise, Elise makes a really good point.
Corbin took a really, really bad route.
Oh, a terrible route, yeah.
A terrible route.
I'm going to do some digging here while you talk.
I'm going to see if I can find the catch probability of that play.
Yeah, please do, because that was, it's, again, we've seen that at times from Corbyn Carroll in center field, where he makes, you know, we would say, hey, if Jake was here, or if Thomas was here, Alec would have caught that.
What was the catch probability?
The expected batting average was $2.90.
No, that's not.
I mean, under 300 on that is rough.
Let me do some more digging.
It's on baseball side, right?
Well, you do that thing, but I want to talk about the offense in the bottom or in the top of the 10th,
because, again, that's something that we really haven't seen this team do much, but we've seen them do lately.
They seem to love late nights in San Diego because they were able once again to step up.
and again, that's something that's been missing.
That's why we remove the answer back shirt from the shop
and promise to never bring it back if they couldn't figure out ways to come back again.
This is a team that has not been able to score runs late in games,
especially in big opportunities,
and they did it tonight.
Three runs in the top of the tent, not just one run,
but I will tell you,
the one thing I got most excited about was when Bert on the broadcast said
Corbyn Carroll is going to be starting off on second base
because he registered the last out of the ninth,
and I just fist pumped
because I felt like
that's just an automatic run
when you got Corbyn Carroll as your man
on second base. However,
this team has been fairly terrible with runners in
scoring position at times, but they did,
man, they got the job done there, and
not only did they get, you know,
one run, but they got
three big runs that really allowed them
to, you know,
secure this victory.
And I mean, that's huge, right?
Yeah, I mean, the runners in scoring position thing hurts, but like, you got to kickstart the offense.
Like, the offense has been really, they got good in June, and it seems like they might be carrying it over into July.
Like, if you look at the team ERA, the starting pitching ERA for this team, it's like five eight since the start of June.
Oh, they're the third, I think they're the third worst team tied for third worst in baseball, only ahead of the Marlins and the Rockies.
whenever you're in that group,
it's amazing that you're anywhere close to 500,
to be honest.
And of course,
since he's not here,
I got to do this for my dog because I'm his dog.
Perdomo got the action started there in the 10th inning,
like he always does.
He gets a single on a soft bunt that they miss.
Wandi Peralta out there was struggling.
He was all over the place.
The moment was too big for him.
Corby Carroll gets.
the third. Randall Gritchick walks. You got bases loaded. And then, of course, you have the big hit by
Christian Walker. Another ball that probably had no business getting through there, but somehow does.
It gets ground ball to center field. Perdomo scores, Corby and Carroll scores, Diamondbacks get two
runs. And then, you know, again, another big run there by Jake McCarthy, who grounds into a force
out and gets Randall Gritchick to score. It was weird.
There was quite a there was quite a ovation when that happened.
And I didn't know if it was Diamondbacks fans representing in San Diego or if it was Padres fans being dumb.
Yeah, no, I mean, Tori, Tori definitely talked about that in what Jesse asked him before the game.
And he was just saying that Diamondbacks fans have just kind of showed out.
And that's an easy trip.
The better this team is, the more likely you are to see Diamondbacks fans,
attend games in L.A. in San Francisco's a little iffy.
You can make a five-hour drive to San Diego.
And like, why not?
It's a beautiful ballpark.
The weather's great.
It sucks here.
It's like 180.
Much better than it is here.
That's for sure.
Like, why not get out there?
And Tori gave him props.
He said, this is a good thing.
Like, get the fans out here.
I like what Skip Dipp says here.
He says, wait, nope, that's wrong one.
Skip Dipp says they knew that bunt was coming and it was still perfect.
That's exactly it.
And I just, I cannot say enough.
And this even goes back to tomorrow about how proud I am of this team.
I really am proud of the way that they have fought back win or lose in these last two games.
Honestly, because I turned into Jacob the fickle fan both nights.
I turned into the fan.
Like I was, like everybody was mad.
Everybody said last night.
that they were more angry about the Diamondbacks coming back and then losing there.
And I understand that because they made you believe, even though you had already pretty
much wave the white flag internally on your emotions to on this loss.
And then they bring you back in it just to let you down again.
Right.
But I still, I still loved the fight that they showed, right?
It wasn't the whole team that let you down there.
It was really just a poor performance from Paul Seawald.
and ultimately that's what it boiled down to is that's that's who blew the game it wasn't like
there were defensive mistakes that went along to compound other things it was just pretty much
Paul Seawald not being able to you know hit his his spots make his pitches right so no
I mean this is resilient they just have to be resilient they have to be resilient when they have to
be they won today they win tomorrow guess what they're back to 500 did you forget what the
Five guys we have in our rotation
are right now.
What did you say?
Did you say they're back to 500?
Did you say they're back to 500?
I just need an excuse to play that.
I have the number.
I have the number.
Let's hear.
The cash probability?
I found out that catch probability
is not public information.
So you had to,
how'd you get this information?
Jacob,
you want to tell us that?
Fortunately, we have Jesse Friedman.
He is a freak.
He is an absolute.
It was 20%.
It was much lower.
It was 20%.
Okay.
All right.
Well, see,
then you got to give him a little bit of credit.
I think he made it look worse by getting twisted inside and out like he did.
And I also think that Corbyn Carroll has kind of adopted a new kind of, I don't know,
might be how he always played the outfield.
But I feel like I've seen him using like his speed to kind of sprint to a spot.
Turn and burn.
Yeah.
Right.
And then sometimes he loses it while he's sprinting.
and he looks back and he can't find it.
That felt a little bit like that.
But hey, at the end of the day, they got the job done.
And that's all that matters right now.
But what also matters is that Christian Walker is still Big Daddy in California.
He got the big hit that gave the Diamondbacks, the runs they needed essentially to win this game.
And for that, he's also our King Snake because why not?
Why not?
Go ahead, RBI.
Double King's.
Double King Snake.
I like whispering like that.
I don't know how to whisper.
I'm not,
I am just,
I'm an internally loud person all the time,
Jacob,
and that's just what my family has to deal with.
But I do appreciate all of you guys for being here tonight.
I appreciate Jesse for joining us from California,
because Jesse has been killing it over there,
and he's also been putting in a lot of work.
And let me just tell you,
he probably doesn't want me to make any of his personal life public
because he hates that.
But I'm just going to say,
travel accommodations have not been easy for Mr.
Friedman and he has had to overcome some adversity himself.
He's had to have some late night comeback losses or wins, you know, himself there.
So I'm very appreciative for all of the work.
What's that?
Triple.
I'm not getting to Kingsn.
Yeah, no, we're not doing that.
Oh, come on.
No, that's crazy.
No, that's crazy talk.
I do appreciate all of you people for being here for the Ph.N.X.

We need some production help up in here.
We got Jacob working seven days a week just because what, just because the demon goes on vacation.
It's insanity.
But of course, let's take a look at the numbers because they're a little bonkers from tonight's game.
There's one thing that's my favorite, Jacob, and that's only because of Ray Mysterio.
But Diamondbacks outscored the San Diego Padres by a score of seven to five.
The Padres outhit the Diamondbacks 14 to 9.
The Padres were 6 for 19 runners in scoring position, 619,
Buyaka, buyaka.
And that takes over to an Austin 316 batting average.
There's a lot of wrestling references in their runners in scoring position numbers tonight.
Diamondbacks were 4 for 11 for a 364 average.
Diamondbacks had the one home run, hard hit percentage.
Not fair for the way.
Hard-hitted balls by the time of backs.
12.9% of their balls were hard hit
versus the Padres' 55.2%.
Yikes.
Baseball's funny.
Is that a winning number?
I mean,
7 to 5 is a winning number.
Piece of Yoshi. They had a 168
expected batting average.
168.
That's pretty amazing.
I don't know how they win games like this.
I really don't.
And I don't know how to feel about Brandon Faw.
Say no.
I know.
But Brandon Fought, Jacob.
What did it cost us?
Everything?
I don't know.
Because Brandon Fawt's hurt.
Kattel Marte didn't play because he's hurt.
His back tightness is still there.
At least he was available off the bench.
So that's encouraging.
But these injuries, they make me sick.
They make me sick.
When you talk about, again, I got to go full, I got to go full Damon here on you.
But when you talk about the offense getting kick started there,
at the end of June that carried over to July
and all of that stuff, and not to mention the fact that
they actually won in the month
of June. Who came back in June?
Jerry P. The guy
that gets everything going.
Terry, Terry, Terry. The cheerleader,
right. I mean, he's good
for your soul and he's good for this team's
soul. And I don't know how they
continue to find ways to win, especially
in situations like this
where this road trip was supposed to be
just something
that was going to be a disaster. The
Diamondbacks right now on this road trip have a winning record.
They're three and two against the Dodgers and the Padres,
and they still have a chance to win the series tomorrow
and take both of these series on the road in California.
What a feat that would be for a team that's still missing so many pieces
to their starting pitching rotation.
Yeah, I think about a month ago,
I made a bold proclamation that this team would go into the All-Star break
over 500.
would you like to know what they would have to do over the next week to hit that?
What would they have to hit?
Five and three.
That's doable.
That's doable because they have the Blue Jays coming to town.
And I don't want to knock on the Blue Jays,
but the Blue Jays aren't really a very strong team.
And I feel like there might be some revenge in store for the Braves
with what happened in that series early this season,
considering how close to Diamondbacks.
were to taking that and instead they got swept, I believe.
Is it a win if this team goes into the All-Star break, 49 and 48?
Is that a win?
I mean, it's a win if they, I think,
if there are two games under 500 at the All-Star break.
Anything above that is icing on a cake,
considering the pieces, the components they've missed,
and especially if they end up missing, you know, Marte,
and Brandon fought for any more time than this.
But of course,
one guy that knows much more about what's going on with Brandon and Cotel
Marte is our guy,
my vice mayor,
your thunder stick.
Goodbye, Jacob.
We love you.
The one and only Jesse Friedman coming to us once again with that just
gorgeous shot.
Jesse,
you could rent this shot out on VRBO or something I feel like because people would rent it
and pay for it.
What a night.
What a night?
a game that, again, much like last night,
had a lot of ups and downs,
a very emotional game
where you felt like the team was going to win
and then lose and then win and then lose.
And they did lose in the form of Brandon Fott.
Do you have any updates so far on what's going on with Fott?
Yeah, I'll start there.
Brandon Fott, it appears, is fine.
We'll get some video in here in a moment.
But Tori Lavello said he expects Brandon Fott
to make his next start,
although they want to see how he feels in the morning.
So X-rays.
X-rays were negative.
I think Brandon Fott's going to be just fine.
But it was a scary moment, right?
I mean, that ball bounced a long way off of Brandon Fott's ankle.
It felt like a terrible.
It also was.
Terrible.
As someone who was here in the building, I can confirm that it sounded awful.
It was like an MLB, the show level,
collision, Derek, where the ball
bounced extremely far
after hitting a player.
Granted, I guess it was... He falls
over on the field and he's just
dead and you have to figure it out.
Yeah, well, it was,
it didn't look good in the moment and
you know, even though
fought, it looks is going to be fine.
It was still, still put the debacks in a tough
position here in this game, only getting four
and a third innings from him. Yeah.
On a day where they did have a couple
of key relievers down. But,
I mean, in another
sense, like, we've seen Brandon Fott have some games this year where he really dominated in
the first four innings or so, and then the wheels kind of come off, you know, in the fifth or sixth
inning. When this, when this happened, it was first and third one out. So, I mean, there's certainly
nothing good about Brandon Fogg getting injured. But in another sense, like Kevin Ginkle also
did a really nice job entering that spot and working his way out of it. Incredible. Kevin
Ginkle pitched one in a third innings and he got four strikeouts in in those.
I think it was one in two thirds, right?
One two thirds.
I'm sorry.
Yeah, one and two thirds.
I apologize.
And got four strikeouts.
So five of those outs were four of those five outs for strikeouts.
Like what he did was incredible, especially coming into that game and getting, you know,
Drix and Profar, Jake Cronoward, Jake Croninworth, back to back on those strikeouts.
That was incredible.
Yeah.
It was huge.
Yeah.
It appears that the gink is back, Derek.
after a bit of a bit of a slow start, you know, there have been some tough moments for him here in the first half of the season.
He hasn't been quite as unconscious as he was in the second half last year and certainly throughout the playoffs when he literally did not allow a run through the Diamondback's entire postseason run.
That was remarkable.
But yeah, Ginkle has really started to look good.
And the D-backs obviously like maneuvering the bullpen was really a challenge in this game, getting through as many.
innings as they needed to. I didn't, I, I did not envision Humberto Castiano's recording a save
for the death of X season. But that is, that is exactly what happened. And it was a tough save, too.
I mean, bass is loaded one out. You know, you've got the, you've got the tying runners in scoring
position. You've got the winning run on first base. Castiano's comes in and records two huge
out to finish this one off. But you can understand why Lavello in a sense used bullpen backwards
where he used Ginkle right at the beginning because he knew how big of a spot that was with runners
at the corners of the fifth. And it worked out really well. It felt like things were going to fall
apart in that moment. And Kevin Ginkle just kept everything together. But Humberto's
strikeout of Kim, who tormented the Diamondbacks all day long, was just amazing. And I mean, I felt like
the one thing there is, I don't know, do I call Castellanos a veteran? I don't know.
It feels like a veteran. Probably not. Yeah, probably not, right? But I just feel like he has more experience,
maybe than some of the other guys there that were available or maybe even Vieira or whatever.
But I felt like he was comfortable doing what we saw the Diamondbacks do at times against the Phillies and the NLCS last year,
which is just kind of let these guys be overly aggressive knowing that they all want to get
the game-winning hit, and it worked out for him in his approach there.
But, man, I mean, he just kind of had ice water in his veins coming into the game in that moment,
especially considering that's not what the Diamondbacks have really asked of him to do this year.
No, it is not.
I mean, Humberto Castiano's is pretty much pitched exclusively in mop-up situations, you know,
where a game is not at all close.
You've actually just seen someone to eat some innings.
He hasn't pitched in quite a while at this point.
So, yeah, I mean, it's been, it's been an odd year for Humberto Castiano's, but it's a good story in that he had Tommy John's surgery.
He came into camp this year.
We've talked about it, you know, way slimmer than, than he was back when people might remember him from a couple of years ago.
But, yeah, I mean, this was a big spot.
This is no mop-up situation, Derek.
This was with the game on the line in the bottom of the 10th inning.
And, of course, Debex also went to Tiago Vieira.
who's been pretty good for them, but also not a guy that I really figured, you know, factoring
into any kind of a save opportunity.
Fiera did not seem to have it today.
Padres go walk, double walk against him to start the 10th inning.
He does record an out.
And then, and then Tori brought in Castiano.
So not the prettiest win for the debacks, Derek, but a win is a win nonetheless.
And, you know, they'll certainly take any win they can get right now.
I'm going to butcher this.
It's Kyle Higashioka, right?
Yeah, Higashioka is the way I've always pronounced it.
Hegashioka, I'm pronouncing it too many.
But, okay.
Jesse, the big question that tormented the fans that want Tori fired, of course.
They had questions tonight about them not walking Kim in that big situation there
where the Padres were able to tie the game.
Ed, do you want to talk a little bit about Kyle's OPS
against the Arizona Diamondbacks this season entering tonight's game?
Sure, yeah, Higashioca entered tonight with a 1625 OPS against the debacks this year,
including three home runs.
I don't know if that's the guy that you want to have at the plate with two runners on base.
But, you know, I mean, I guess it's a hindsight is 2020.
situation where Ha-sung Kim did come through with a really big double to tie the game for
the Padres.
Honestly, though, yeah, but I didn't really understand.
It seemed like there was a lot of discourse about the debacks, you know, how they should
have put Haasung Kim on.
Higashioka, I mean, forget the numbers against the debacks.
Higashioca has a higher OPS.
Period.
This season.
Yeah.
So, I mean, I think Kim is historically has been a better hitter.
He's hotter lately, though.
Right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, he's been good.
I mean, but Hagashioca went three for four with a home run literally yesterday at the same time.
So I didn't really understand why there was so much discourse about that.
Tori was asked about that after the game.
And he said he basically, he did mention how Hagashioka has heard the diamondbacks a lot this season.
And how he figured that he figured that Ryan Thompson was going to be able to make pitches to Kim.
And unfortunately, that didn't really happen.
went over the middle of the plate and did get beat on that.
But then he rebounded so nicely.
And again, I'm not just saying that because of how much I personally love Ryan Thompson,
like a family member.
I'm just saying that because he did a great job.
And I mean, again, even though the damage was done,
the Diamondbacks were able to shut the door and get to extra innings.
And I was saying earlier, the minute I knew Corbyn Carroll was going to be the man on base,
Jesse, I was ecstatic
because that just felt like an automatic run
for this team and instead of just one
they end up getting three which
was very important because the Padres
also scored one in the bottom of the
inning. I mean
Geraldo Perdomo really started it right?
He laid down a beautiful bunt, winds up reaching
first base. Demon's not here. You don't have
to do this.
Ferdonimo hasn't actually had a
great week necessarily but that was
a good, a big
moment for sure. We've seen the debacks struggle a little bit in extra innings at times where it
feels like the runner at second base is almost a crutch for them and they, you know, tighten up a
little bit maybe. But Perdomo was able to reach first base. You've got runners at the corners with
nobody out. And at that point, you feel pretty darn good about your chances of scoring a run,
you know, with a man at third base and nobody out in the inning. So that was a, that was big starting
that out. You know, Wandi Peralta clearly didn't really have it tonight. We did talk with
Christian Walker about his two-run single.
Of course, Walker comes through again.
No homers this time, Derek, but a really, really big two-run single to give the debacks
that lead in the 10th inning.
And he broke his bat on the play.
And yeah, it was, yeah, he sort of acknowledged after the game that he did get a little
bit lucky.
But at the same time, you know, there was some discourse about how Walker has maybe
gotten a little bit unlucky at times this season where he hits lasers like right at guys.
Yeah. Maybe he was due. Maybe he was due for something like this.
But, yeah, Walker. Walker has 11 RBI this week, Derek, which is absolutely insane.
That's over five games. I think he had two RBI in his game prior to that.
So he has 13 runs batted in over his last six games.
Pretty crazy run here for Christian Walker.
Well, we're going to get to more from the clubhouse at Petco Park.
But before we do that, Gilbert sent this message that made me realize, I want to do address this before you got here, Jesse.
And that is Bill Miller called a shit game.
And when I say a shit game, I mean, there has been some bad nights for the umpire.
Tonight, I don't even know what to say.
Like, Bert was beside himself on the broadcast.
The broadcast team, Tom and Burt, were just, by the way, Berthume also called Tom Gonzo at one point during the broadcast.
Just needed to throw out that out there.
I've called Jacob Jesse like 20 times.
It's not anything new.
We all get mistakes around here.
But I will say, this strike zone, Jesse, was a moving target.
It was amazing how often a pitch that was just an egregious strike.
is no longer a strike
or how things in the middle of the strike
zone weren't a strike. I have
never seen anything like this.
I felt like this man was just
dozing off in the middle of the night.
I felt like there was no
way he was paying attention.
Like when you know someone has a phone
in their hand and they're looking at it
and you know they don't hear you.
Like Jesse, I know when Jesse's not listening to me.
Because Jesse is a very good listener.
It happens all. It happens all.
It happens all. I don't.
I don't think I'm a good listener, Derek.
Come on now.
No, you're not me.
No, wait.
You're a good listener that when I know you're listening, you are listening, but you're a bad listener because you ignore me a lot.
You're a bad friend and a bad co-hose because of that.
Yeah, like this man, I have no idea what the hell was going on tonight.
I really didn't.
I was laughing at one point because of how, because, because again, the strike zone we see on TV is meaningless.
that's the strike zone.
That's like what it should be.
That's what like, you know, whatever.
But even what we're seeing on TV isn't really, you know,
what might be going on with the way pitches are breaking or whatever.
Not to mention the fact that an umpire is allowed to kind of call their own strike zone,
as long as they call it consistently,
as long as they make an effort for pitches that are on the outside,
that they're calling to be a strike that are outside of the zone,
remain a strike all night.
And don't just randomly change based on, you know,
what you're feeling like doing right now.
this inning like oh my back kind hurts that's a strike you know like i don't know what was going
on but this man uh needs to be disciplined and i don't say that often about people i don't i want to
speak to his manager jesse i want to have a talk with his manager and just let him know my feelings
as a customer of baseball about his employee's performance tonight because it was bad and i don't
know if someone should lose their job but someone should definitely be like suspended or something over
how bad tonight was that's all i'm suggesting
Being an umpire's hard, and I'll move on.

the time, but he knows this isn't a lie.

All right, Jesse.
Well, let's hear from the guys.
in the clubhouse.
Of course,
my big concern
is Brandon Fott.
I still don't believe you
when you say he's okay.
So let me see some video evidence.
Yeah.
It's great result.
Here's Tori Lavello
talking about Brandon Fawkesh,
he has,
is a left ankle?
Left ankle contusion.
Yep.
And had x-rays
all negative,
so everything's okay.
I told him I made the decision
and I gathered information from the medical team.
I talked to Strahmi, and I told him I made the decision to remove him from the game,
and he wasn't going to talk me out of that.
It's one of those things where he's too valuable.
It's all about the human being first,
and not knowing what was really going to be happening in that moment in that situation,
I just said, you've got to come off the field and get evaluated.
So he wanted to stay out there, but it just didn't make any sense for me.
Well, we know Tori's method,
of deciding that. He can say he checked with the medical staff all he wants.
We know he went out there and he looked Brandon fought in the eyes.
And he did the dad thing where he's like, look me in the eyes.
Are you okay? Are you hurt or are you injured? Are you heard or are you injured? Are you
hurt or are you injured? You're injured. Go sit down. Go sit down right now.
Like it was, I don't know. It didn't look like Brandon Fott was arguing or trying to fight too
hard to stay in the game. It's hard also to try to fight to stay in the game when your ankle is
on fire because you just got hit with a pitch or a ball that.
It was like a hundred mile exit Velo.
Yeah, it was 98 off the bat.
It got him pretty good.
It made a very loud noise we were saying earlier.
Here's Brandon Fotz's side of the story.
Here's what he had to say.
It feels good.
X-rays came back negative,
and I think we just got to deal with swelling from here on out.
And I think there shouldn't be any mistime
as long as the swelling goes down a little bit.
So they weren't worried about it,
and I don't think we're worried about it.
Tori said he made the call.
You're good with it?
Yeah, I wanted to keep going, but it's probably the right call in the situation.
It got me pretty good, and it was hurting in the moment, but I'm a competitor,
so I guess I wanted to keep going.
But, you know, it's obviously up to them in the training staff,
and it's probably the right call in the situation.
Well, it's not that you're just a competitor.
It's also that adrenaline is flowing through your veins and in your soul, Cody Rhodes.
but it's because, you know, that's their job, right?
Their job is to make sure that you're not staying out there.
Not only that you could injure yourself further, but that was a big moment, right?
So it felt like going away from Brandon if he wasn't at 100, you know, at 100% was the right call for the game as well.
He was also asked like, did you think there was a chance that could be broken?
And he said yes.
He said it.
Oh.
He was like, yeah, it got me pretty good.
So I don't, I mean, yeah, from a competitive standpoint, like anyone in that position is probably going to try to say they want to stay in.
But he clearly was not trying to fight it too much.
And it sounds like Tori was pretty adamant.
I mean, he didn't even have fought step up on the mound and, you know, throw some practice tosses or anything.
He was like, no, I just want you to get out of there.
And I think that was the right move.
I mean, the reality, Derek, is that Brandon fought is extremely important for the diamond backs.
I mean, all starting pitchers are, you know, important for all teams, but for the diamond backs, they...
Very important for this team right now.
They really cannot afford to lose another starting pitcher, and it sounds like with the way that they handled this, getting him off the mound right away, you know, it sounds like he's going to be just fine and be able to make his next start.
Tori, we didn't show it in that clip, but Tori, I separately.
asked him, do you expect Brandon to make his next start? And Tori said, yes, I do expect him to make his next
start, although we do want to see how he feels in the morning, and then we'll kind of go from there.
So pending, you know, fought feeling okay when he wakes up tomorrow. I mean, I'm sure there's
going to be some soreness, but I do think he'll be able to make his final start before the all-star break.
Gilbert gets me. Gilbert gets me. I know Jesse does it, but Gilbert gets me. Speaking of, of
adrenaline in my soul, Jesse.
Kevin Ginkle,
he lit my,
he put fire in my blood.
He put fire in my blood because what a big,
what a big outing for him.
And I mean,
again,
it's just,
I don't know,
Tori has probably been frustrated
knowing who he can count on in these situations.
And Kevin Ginkle has developed back into that guy,
it feels like,
you know,
and that's,
even to say like Ryan Thompson and Paul Seawald, right?
Like even those guys have now kind of put Tori in a position of not feeling 100% comfortable,
but it feels like Kevin Ginkle is back to being that guy because he was that dude tonight for this team.
It was a really good pitch that he threw to Jerks and Profar to strike him out.
It was a very well-located high fastball, you know, just the perfect spot.
But that pitch that he threw to Jake Cronenworth to strike to, you know, get the third out of the inning and get out of that jam.
that was the ginkle slider right i mean that was the just absurd amount of drop that we're used to seeing
when ginkle slider is at its best i think it started you know near the the middle or the top of
the strike zone and it it might have bounced into dirt like the pitch dropped that much and crone
work is clearly fooled so yeah i mean ginkle getting back to the guy that he was toward the end of last
year is a really big development for this team even even when he has been successful this year
hasn't been as much swing and miss as we've seen with him in the past.
So him having four strikeouts, you know, striking out four of the five batters that he
faced, I do think it's a sign that, you know, he's really kind of coming around and coming
into his own again.
Tori was asked, you know, do you feel like that was kind of a turning point in this game
when Ginkgo came in and recorded those two strikeouts to get the debats out of that fifth
inning jam?
Here's what Tori had to say.
I thought so of the big punch out of pro far.
and, you know, in that situation, that's what I'm looking for.
That's why he was the guy that I chose.
We have some big arms down there, and he was the one that I know,
I've known in the past has come in in that situation and really gotten after it.
And he did a great job.
We won this game because of him today.
You lost a lot.
We really did.
And, I mean, that's the reason why he was our king snake along with Christian Walker.
We couldn't pick just one guy.
And Kevin Ginkle, even as the game progressed, it just felt like,
such a pivotal moment that he came in and gave this team what he gave them in that moment.
Yeah, I mean, you could probably go a few different directions with King's Snake for a game like this, right?
I mean, people coming through in that huge spot.
Christian Walker, as you said, a two-run single that put the debacks out in front.
Even Humberto Castiano's, like bases loaded one out with a two-run lead in the bottom of the 10th.
And that's a lot to ask from a guy who, you know, really hasn't gotten the pitch much at all.
since the D-Backs called him up a while back.
So there was also a cool moment there.
Tori Lavello, he told us after the game that when he went out there and, you know,
was handed the ball to Castiano's.
He said this, something all the lines of this is what it's all about, Cassie.
You know, this is why you're getting this opportunity because we believe that you're
going to be able to finish the job.
And Castiano, of course, was able to do just that.
Injected in my veins.
Like, there are some moments.
There are some moments when some people tell you certain things that it means a lot. It means a lot. And in that moment, it feels like you can run through a brick wall for that person. Tori has made me feel that as a person that doesn't even pitch for him. I'm not on his staff. I'm not even on the bench. I simply just want to run through a brick wall for Tori just to show him that I can. And that's because he's that kind of guy.
that can motivate you in that moment and to give you to get the most sometimes out of out of a
out of a player right uh but you know of course there's also the other side of that which you know
a lot of people are wondering why no seawald i mean i feel like a lot of people know why there's
no paul seewald but was there an actual reason why they didn't turn to paul seewald in that high
leverage situation yeah troy said that seawald wasn't available just to martin
as also wasn't available.
I know people were,
people were sort of sounding the alarm bells on Twitter in particular
when Bryce Jarvis enters,
you know,
in a big spot to face Mani Machado.
A lot of these guys,
like this was not the normal lineup of the studs that we see
that we feel confident about.
And even when we did see guys like Ryan Thompson,
he wasn't lights out,
he gave up a hit right away that,
you know,
it was the game tying hit.
Yeah, I mean,
it all just had to do with the, you know,
the debacks having,
kind of a lot of innings to fill with fought leaving the game early.
And Seawall not being available along with Justin Martinez not being available,
even through 41 pitches just a couple of days ago,
certainly can understand why the DeBaps wanted to give him a couple of days down
rather than just one.
This is what Tori had to say about Sea Wall in particular.
Seawall was unavailable.
Yes, he was.
Ket, unfortunately, was not available.
We're trying to, you know, through the course of the later in the pregame,
We were trying to figure out how he was doing.
And once again, I just made the decision that it didn't make sense for us to run them out there.
Martinez was unavailable as well.
See, well, healthy just to be just a work.
Yeah, it's a heavy workload.
So I think it's two out of four and maybe four out of six, if that sounds right.
That's just off the top of my head.
So it's a big workload, and we've got to manage that.
Yeah, and again, that's what when, I don't mean to, like,
shame fans at all. But one thing that as much as we want to see, Justin Martinez go out there and
throw 103 miles an hour every single night, they can't do that. And, you know, this team right now
has been on quite the stretch. They've, they've used their guys quite a bit due to the fact that
they are going through the troubles that they're going through with starting pitching. And tonight
didn't help because Brandon Fod is the guy that usually gives them some length. He's been the, you know,
the guy giving them quality starts this season,
and unfortunately due to the kind of freak nature of that injury,
that accident,
he couldn't do it tonight.
Yeah, Seawald,
I'm looking at it now,
did finish out each of the Diamondbacks last two games
against the Oakland A's last weekend.
That's right.
You could argue maybe the last one was a little bit unnecessary.
The debacks had,
they won that game five to once.
They had a four-run lead.
But he also had to...
He pitched the night before,
But, yeah, there hadn't been like a ton of work for him in the last week.
So I don't know if that was part of it there.
The debacks did have an off day on Monday.
So it is for the last six games for Seawald, but it was really for the last seven days.
So I don't know, Derek.
Like I do think that the workload played a role here.
I also have to at least wonder if maybe the debacks, you know, didn't hate the idea of just giving Seawall a day after what happened last night.
and, you know, given the week that he's had.
But, yeah, you also heard Tori talk there about how Cotel Marte was not available
toward the end of this game.
Certainly, obviously wasn't in the starting lineup, but Tori had said pregame
that maybe he'd be available toward the end of this game.
That was not the case.
So, yeah, we'll continue to monitor Cattel situation.
Obviously, is a really important player for the devax moving forward.
I can't take many more of these games.
We've, even the blowout wins in Los Angeles still kind of,
was a bit too much on my heart, Jesse,
especially seeing Christian Walker
hit all those goddamn home runs.
I had to run around my house
singing that song over and over and over again.
Walker, Walker, Walker, Walker.
But, like, for real,
this has been a lot of stress on the team.
Yeah, I mean, it's been a lot of stress on everyone.
If you're a fan of the Diamondbacks,
like, I think I saw someone,
you need an idol.
Yeah, I think I saw someone reply to my,
my sort of like game wrap up tweet and say like I've I've aged 14 years in the last three days or something like that and that is very understandable like even the even the kind of blowout wins that we had at Dodgers stadium um you know that those games it's not like those games were blowouts from from the very beginning necessarily yeah good point those are still still pretty competitive and they were still like there was a level of drama there just because of how outrageous you know what Christian Walker was was was doing in
that series how outrageous that was obviously the tuesday game was a crazy roller coaster ride at dodgers
stadium they know the game that that seawald ultimately blows all the all with two outs and then
what happened yesterday with arguably like the craziest ninth inning and diamond back's history question
mark like at least it would be in the conversation you don't often see team score nine combined
runs uh in the ninth inning that like where every run is very very relevant to the situation so
Yeah, it's been a lot.
And I asked Tori Lavello after this game, like, you a little stressed out?
Like, it's been a pretty stressful couple of days for you.
And here's what Tori had to say.
Yeah.
I have an oar ring on that I'm wearing.
I don't know if you guys know what that is.
You should check it out.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So for whatever reason, I'm not human last night in the ninth inning.
My stress level was extremely low.
But I'm going to check it as soon as I get home tonight.
I want to see what my stress level was.
I know how I felt.
it was totally different than last night.
I was in a cold sweat in the dugout for sure.
Those aura rings are very cool.
He's not wrong about that, but no free ads.
Max is going to kill me for that one.
But yeah, I mean, like, Tori's been there a lot.
And I think that's the thing is, is that, like,
Tori at times is the guy in the noose in that gif,
like being like, first time.
Like, it's when people overreact to the wins and losses,
there's 162 baseball games during the course of a regular season.
There are going to be some nights where shit doesn't go your way and you just can't dwell on it.
Or you will literally cause yourself to go crazy.
Like there's just,
there's too much of it.
And I think that then that like that kind of overthinking things,
the regretting things,
it compounds into like you second guessing yourself as a manager.
And, you know,
that none of that's ever good right because again there's going to be nights where another team
just beat you and as much as we want to scream and yell about what paul seawald did or didn't do last
night you also have to tip your cap to the fact that the Padres came out and just demolished
him in the inning and like you said last night like we talked about we did the same to their
closer in the top of the inning right so again tonight was another night where the diamondbacks
went out there late got got some runs on the board and
and we're able to do some damage against one of the Padres,
you know, better relievers.
The Diamondbacks, like, is this,
is this the most entertaining week of Diamondbacks baseball
that we've had this year?
Of this season, yes.
I feel like it is by like a long shot.
Well, you're also there,
so I don't know why the hell you wouldn't think it's entertaining
for you to be there.
That's fair.
To see Christian Walker hitting dinger after dinger.
But yes, like, this has been.
It has been because,
even in the losses they were in it.
And even in the losses, they showed fight and life.
And yeah, things didn't go their way and it sucks because at this point, right now,
the Diamondbacks very well could be undefeated on this road trip,
which is outrageous, out fucking outrageous to say.
It's outrageous to expect and it's outrageous to say.
But they were literally, what, two outs?
Two outs?
Well, not really.
Last night's game was a little different.
But one out in the loss in L.A.
and then last night's game, you know,
they were three. Yeah,
they were three outs away last night. Yeah, last night was a different story.
But like one strike away in that Dodgers series of sweeping the Dodgers.
And I mean, this series, obviously, the Diamondbacks were able to come back tonight,
despite the way things went last night and win another game where, honestly,
the Padres would not go away.
And the Diamondbacks did that last night to them where they wouldn't go away.
And the Dodgers still won.
And tonight was a night where the Diamondbacks, you know,
tried to take this one.
And the Padres wouldn't go away, but the Diamondbacks still win.
So two nights where, you know, it's very exciting baseball to watch.
It's very entertaining.
And, man, if this doesn't make you feel alive and excited as a baseball fan,
like I said last night, go find something else to do with your life.
Don't be a fan of sports because this is what it's all about, baby.
I mean, it's just crazy, like even thinking back to the Oakland series,
the Diamondbacks won the last two games of that series,
three to nothing in the Saturday game,
five to one in the Sunday game.
But that Friday game, they lost nine to four.
That was not any kind of a, you know,
blowout game all the way through.
That was the game that DeBacks had a four three lead going into the eighth inning.
And that's when Ryan Thompson had a bit of a clunker.
And then I don't remember who came in to pitch the ninth inning,
but it, you know, the lead sort of grew from there.
But you think about that game and then the Tuesday game at the
D-backs lost to the Dodgers, the game that they lost here last night.
I mean, the Diamondbacks at this point, Derek, have played eight consecutive games
where they appeared to be in pretty good position to win the game, like close to the end
of the game.
Not just talking about like a one-nothing lead in the first inning or something.
You're talking about a four-three lead and, you know, going to the eighth inning last
Friday against the A's, you're talking about a, what was it, a four-three lead,
or maybe it was 5-4 against the Dodgers on Tuesday
where Seawald gives up the two runs all with two outs.
And then, of course, yesterday you're up eight to seven
going into the bottom of the nine.
And then all hell breaks loose.
You're not even able to record an out.
So this has been an outrageous stretch for the debats
where they've gone five and three.
They're playing pretty well overall,
but there's still probably, you know,
just kind of a sense of unsatisfaction,
given that you could imagine a world
where the debacks are on an eight-game winning streak right now,
and not that much would really have to change.
It's just, you know, Ryan Thompson coming through like he kind of always has,
you know, Paul Seawald, as we discussed yesterday,
like you can't expect perfection out of your closer,
but he's been so good this year and it, you know,
wouldn't have shocked me if Seawald had turned in two clean saves this week as well.
So it has been just a crazy week, week and a half year,
Diamondbacks baseball.
They spent the entire month of June winning game ones, and now they've lost three game ones in a row,
but they have a chance tomorrow to still win their third series in a row if they could find a way for Ryan Nelson to win against Dylan Cease,
which will not be easy for this Diamondbacks team. However, after what I've seen in the last five days,
I'm starting to believe again, Jesse Friedman, and I can't believe I'm saying that because I was,
I was looking on Amazon at doctor costumes so that I could come in here and do an actual time of death bit.
But we're putting that off.
We're putting that off for a little while at least.
Of course, I'm not lied about that.
I don't lie.
I never lie.
I tell the truth, especially what I talk about buying costumes on Amazon.
Jesse, he never lies except when it's about him having a place to stay on a road trip because he'll just lie and then find a place somehow.
But you know who never lies the numbers, Jesse.
So what do we have for tonight's number that does not lie?
Tonight's number is 68%.
Maybe you guys discussed this earlier.
We haven't talked a whole lot about Brandon Fotz's outing,
really just kind of the fact that he got hurt.
68% Derek represents the combined number of four-seem fastballs
and sinkers that fought through in this game.
So the percentage of total pitches that were either a four-seem fastball,
or a sinker.
And that is the second highest number ever for Brandon fought in his big league career.
He had one game.
I think it was against the Cubs last year.
I want to say that was a game where he had an opener.
So he was technically coming in as reliever.
He threw 71% fastballs in that game.
But he threw 68% tonight, which is a lot.
He did not rely very much on his sweeper.
And it seemed to be working pretty well.
There were a lot of situations where it looked to me like Padres hitters in a two-strike count
we're guessing a sweeper because that's Fought's go-to pitch.
I mean, his excellent out pitch that he relies on so much.
And they wound up getting a fastball instead.
And they were just laid on it.
They weren't expecting it.
So I thought that was interesting that Fought really,
it seemed like kind of a shift of game plan against the team that he's sort of struggled
against this year.
I mean,
fought I think he,
I think it was six innings,
five runs, three earned in his first start against the Padres this year.
That was back at Chase Field.
It's not a terrible line, you know, six innings and three earned runs, but he allowed 10 hits in that game.
And then back here in San Diego a few weeks ago, fought allowed five runs and five in a third, gave up nine hits in that game.
So the Padres have been really good against him this season.
And today it seemed like he switched up the game plan a little bit, and it worked really well.
Well, since we're talking about pitching, Jacob, let's light up that strikeout meter, thanks to our friends in Circle K.
How many strikeouts?
We have the strikeout meter now.
You got a strikeout meter, Jesse, and it's all full because it only goes up to 10.
And the Diamondbacks pitchers recorded 14 strikeouts tonight, six for Brandon Fott,
four for Kevin Ginkle in just an inning in two-thirds of work.
Bryce Jarvis had two strikeouts, and Vieira had one strikeout.
And Castiano's had one strikeout.
So a lot of contributions here from everybody across the board.
And, of course, I'm not returning that strikeout.
meter to Chase Field.
So we just have to get a new one.
Wait, wait.
So we have a strikeout meter that caps out at 10 strikeouts.
Jesse, don't quite.
Like, you're going to do that with Jacob on the show with us right now.
This is where we're supposed to talk about this behind his back and make fun of him, not doing it.
I'm fully, I'm fully prepared to to fight Jacob live on the air if I have to.
How do we have a strikeout meter that is capped at 10 strikeouts?
How did this?
How did we allow this?
with our production staff. You can deal
with our production staff. Jacob,
would you mind putting that super chat back up
there? Because thank you to Easton for your super
chat. Said from what I hear, it's unlikely
Fott misses a start.
Your resident optimist. Thank you
for your optimism. Jesse is typically
the pessimist around here, but he actually
agreed with you here because it does not
sound like Brandon Fott. We'll miss any time.
Fingers crossed. We'll see how he feels tomorrow.
Of course. Also, did you get
any word on Erods?
MRI.
Yes, yes.
Erod did have his MRI yesterday
and Tori Lavello said today that it came back clean.
He was not sure exactly when Erod was throwing a flat ground.
It might have happened already today.
He didn't quite have confirmation on that
when we spoke to him pregame.
But if it didn't happen today,
it sounds like it's going to happen soon.
So the progression from here for people who don't know,
you start with a flat ground,
which is not the same thing as long toss.
This isn't the 105 feet, the 120 feet.
This is like actually pitching,
but to someone who's in a crouch,
who's in a catching position,
yeah,
just not off of the mound.
So that's the first step,
the step after that would be throwing a bullpen.
So that would be actually off of the mound.
And then at that point,
you start building up your progression,
you start facing hitters.
You get into some games,
either at the complex league level
or probably eventually at race.
know, and then eventually when the workload is built up and everything, then you're able to get back into a big league game.
So I know a lot of people want a timeline here.
Tori Lavello didn't give one.
I think he's done giving us timelines after, you know, there have just been a lot of timelines that have kind of come and gone throughout the course of the year.
What will it be done when it's finished?
Right.
Right.
Where he's at right now?
Yeah, understandably so.
But I would be pretty surprised if Errod came back in July.
that's not something that Tori said,
but that's just kind of my sense of how long it will take to build up from,
he's basically starting from ground zero and having to build up a full starter's workload.
So I think that's probably going to go into August for sure.
When in August would be possible?
Does it go into September?
I would think he could be back in August at some point.
That still sounds realistic to me,
but we'll have to see.
There's a lot of boxes to check between now and then.
Tori said that once a pitcher gets to three innings and 45 pitches,
you know, facing hitters, that's really when he starts to key in on, okay,
this is when the starting pitcher is going to get back.
Erod is still a little ways away from that at this point.
See, the thing that's impressive right now is that this team is still finding a way to win.
And they are almost progressing in a way where the Diamondbacks are not,
like they're finding a way to win like they're not going to get these guys back at all.
But they will.
There's going to be a time where they get married.
Merrill Kelly back where they get Jordan Montgomery back and they get Erod.
I don't know if I want to say back to play.
And so when that starting rotation is complete, again, there's no guarantees that these
guys are all going to be great, but those are some hosses, those are some studs.
And when you get those five guys together along with Brandon Fott and Zach Gallen,
like other teams are losing players because of this season, because of the 162 game season.
And those teams probably couldn't sustain the loss that the Diamondbacks have sustained, you know,
and still be one game under 500 right now.
But as we get closer to the season, the Diamondbacks are going to get healthier and healthier and get back to 100%.
Hopefully they can refrain from having more injuries happen that cause, you know, any, any, you know, the situation to worsen.
It just, it feels like they could really get on a role at the right time and be healthy.
at the right time as we approach, you know, the playoffs,
which is what this is really all about,
making the playoffs and being ready once you get there to go out there
and win some series.
Totally, yeah.
I mean, I still think that the Diamondbacks, when they're whole,
still present a, you know, a tough team to face in the playoffs.
Like if you've got Zach Allen, if you've got Merrill Kelly feeling better,
if you've got, you know, Brandon Fott,
who I think really proved what he can do in the playoffs.
playoffs last year. I don't know exactly what George Montgomery's situation will be at that point.
You know, given the season he's had, I don't know if it's necessarily a lock.
The feedbacks are, you know, putting him out there to start game two of a playoff series.
But, I mean, if Eduardo Rodriguez is able to get back and look like himself, then that's
another solid weapon to have out of a rotation in the postseason.
And this Diamondbacks offense has not been perfect this year by any means.
Corbin, obviously, not being the same player is a big blow for.
for them, but they also have Jock Peterson now, who's been one of the best hitters on this team.
He's a guy who wasn't even on this roster last year.
You know, Randall Gertich, I think the team has probably more depth than it did last year as well.
So D-Bags can find a way to get there, Derek.
I don't think it's too hard to talk yourself into them being a pretty interesting team come playoff time.
But they do have to find a way to get there.
And at this point, I mean, you're a game under 500.
you know, how many wins is it going to take to make the playoffs?
Who the heck knows?
You know, it's probably not going to be 81.
You know, it's probably going to be higher than 81.
It's probably going to be higher than 83.
I mean, if it takes 84 wins to get into the playoffs,
that's a six-game over 500 end-of-season record that you need to have.
I believe that means the debacks would have to go 40 and 33 the rest of the season.
And that doesn't sound like a super easy thing, frankly.
I mean, the debacks would have to go seven games.
games over 500 and less than half a season, just in order to hit kind of what we feel and
suspect might be that that kind of minimum benchmark in order to get into the postseason
at all. So getting there is not going to be super easy, I guess, is what I'm saying. But once
they get there, you know, who knows, as, as we, as we saw last year. Well, the Diamondbacks
haven't come across very elite pitching in these wins that they've had. So that's one thing.
I don't want to get too high on the fact that they beat the Dodgers,
but I don't also want to just scoff at the fact that they beat the Dodgers like it was a fluke, right?
Yes, they do have to go 40 and 33, but that's also something that with the amount of games
they have left to play against the Rockies alone, I believe, is a feat they could accomplish.
Not to mention the fact that I do think that this team is a good team.
And I think that they've had a lot of adjustments this year.
They've had a lot of disappointments.
they've had a lot of pressure put on them.
But right now, I feel like the pressure is being alleviated.
Like I said, many times in the past, every time one of these guys comes back,
every time one of these guys comes back, the clubhouse gets, the vibes get a little better.
And the camaraderie is there.
And you just have guys like Alec Thomas, who still doesn't have great numbers,
but still gets key hits like we saw in last night's game.
And, you know, again, that's kind of.
at what the Diamondbacks have been missing because they haven't had that guy stepping up in the seventh or eighth or ninth inning lately in this season to get those big hits.
And I mean, again, I don't know.
I just, I'm starting to believe that this team really can beat the good teams in baseball.
They just have to figure out a way to overcome this starting pitching issue that they have right now.
It'll get easier, but it's going to take a while.
And hopefully when Jordan Montgomery comes back, he is improved.
and hopefully this injury was part of the reason why he was having his struggles this season.
But we have gone on for way too long.
And I am going to let you go before they turn out all the lights on you.
I do want to thank everybody for being here in the chat.
Of course, I want to thank Jacob, especially for taking the time tonight to produce us.
Of course, we're going to give him the first where he's going to get top billing.
You can follow him on Twitter at Jacob underscore Franklin for.
And he's not the fourth best Jacob Franklin.
He's the best Jacob Franklin, and I'm willing to put it out there.
We're going to go have to fight the guy that has Jacob underscore Franklin one,
but we'll figure that out.
Jesse and Jacob need to fight each other,
and they need to do it soon because the three of us are going on a road trip together
to both Texas and Chicago,
and there's steaks to be eaten and pizzas to be eaten,
and we need to all get along because we're going to watch the All-Star game
