Well, the Arizona Diamondbacks complete the sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals and who the hell even is this team?
We have no idea, but we are going to talk about it. We're also going to preview the series with the Astros and discuss Cotel Marte returning to the lineup and also him not being soft. Don't you go anywhere. We're starting in 30 seconds.

we have so much to discuss after the errors of the Diamondbacks,
completed the three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals,
and made one Kevin Thomas very sad.

Welcome in to you guys.
Guys, great to see you, Rapscallions here already talking about how good the teal beard is going to look.
I would counter that it's not going to look good.
I would actually go in the other direction.
But Jay Cuddy is right.
Gino is God.
This man cannot be stopped.
And the Diamondbacks right now are on an absolute role.
Does it mean anything?
I don't know.
Damon, I don't know if it means anything, Derek.
It means everything.
But after 100 games, the Diamondbacks sit at 50.
and 50.
We have said that this team this year just is the most 500
baseball club possibly in franchise history,
and I don't think anything indicates that more than their record
literally being 50 and 50 after their first 100 games.
But should we,
should we climb the mountain?
Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
We're definitely sending that guy up the mountain right now.
That'll never not feel great.
That'll never not feel great.
And the Diamondbacks have won four in a row now.
So they are really on a roll here after the All-Star break.
They won their final game going into the break.
And now here they sweep the Cardinals three games.
Saturday marked the first time in franchise history where a Diamondbacks player hit 2 plus home runs,
while another Diamondbacks player hit 2 plus triples.
That would be one Gino Suarez and one Corbin Carroll.
These guys are on fire right now.
Corby and Carroll honestly was struggling kind of coming into the series and coming out of the break.
You know, he had his big moment in the All-Star game, and that was absolutely great to see, despite the fact that Damon wants to make it clear that Dave Roberts has never allowed to look at Cate, a, Heueno Svarez, or Corbyn Carroll, like he did, like those pictures indicated ever again.
I was waiting on you to come back, Derek, because I had no one else here at the office to talk about it with.
The minute I saw it, I knew you were going to leave your mind about it.
The way Dave Roberts was looking at our players, hands off, buddy.
Yeah.
Yeah, just licking his chops, you know?
Don't even speak to him.
That's probably for the best.
I don't want this.
It's kind of like Gino not being in the home run derby as sad as I am that he wasn't,
and I feel like he absolutely deserved that honor.
At the end of the day, nothing really comes of it for the team or the season
if Gino wins the home run derby or participates in it, right?
So realistically, I've heard people, players in the past say they didn't want to participate in a derby
because they felt it altered their swing and messed things up in the second half for them.
And I would much rather take Gino here hitting five home runs, six home runs, excuse me, six home runs in his last five games rather than him doing that necessarily in the home run derby.
But back to the point, like it's kind of similar.
Like I want to keep a kind of an even even thing.
And we are enemies, Dave Roberts.
So I don't want you fraternizing with our players.
I don't think I said that word right.
No, you did, I think.
I don't want you looking at them too long.
I really don't want you talking to them.
I feel like you should go through a bench coach that then have to relay anything that you want to tell any of the Diamondbacks players that way.
But I just don't love how chummy they are.
Yeah.
You know, Corbyn's going on Moogie's podcast.
And it's just a whole like.
I did say I like that.
I know you love it.
Well, you're a Dodgers fan.
That's why you love it.
I'm a crab catcher fan.
Come on.
It's a Cogra Harris.
Our friends at DLLLSS, they asked Corbyn,
Carol, like if there's a quarterback-style baseball show who he'd like to see on it, and he said Clayton Kershaw.
Wow.
Did they ask him about the Roger Bessions football slider?
Nothing about that, huh?
No, right.
They're not doing their job journalism-wise, but I will tell you this.
One of the reasons why the Arizona Diamondbacks right now have won four in a row and are playing some of their best baseball of the year is defense.
The Diamondbacks are playing some of their best defense that they played all season long.
In fact, they've committed one error in their last 53 and two-thirds.
innings played. So an absolute outstanding performance there. It feels like we are seeing the
Diamondback starting pitchers all have good lengthy performances where they don't allow a lot of runs,
a lot of quality starts, but that is being backed up by the defense behind them. And that's the
reason why their pitchers are able to go out there and do what we're seeing them do. I feel like,
you know, again, it's a big reason why those pitchers have had success in the past. I feel like,
you know, I brought it up, but I feel like a lot of those moments that we've seen,
seen this season were deflating and were the defensive mistakes were the catalyst for what drove
runs, pitch counts up, everything up on the starting pitchers.
And then again, you turn around later and you don't really factor in how much the defense
playing poorly behind the Diamondback starters has impacted this season, has impacted their
ERAs, the ERA of Gallen, the RIA of Brandon fought.
And it's not to be said that it's completely on the defense, right?
A starting pitcher should be able to see, you know, a play.
happened behind him and that doesn't go their way and kind of flush it in the moment and move on.
However, it's been fairly detrimental to a few starting pitchers. And I feel like Zach Gallon is
probably the one that has received the worst of that treatment. But the Diamondbacks again,
going back to what these guys are doing right now, Gino and Corbyn on a historic tear. In fact,
Gino's numbers right now are on par to perhaps be one of the best offensive seasons of any Diamondback
in history, perhaps surpassing
Luis Gonzalez in home runs and other
factors. You got
Gino again hitting six home runs
in his last five games. The sixth
player in franchise history to do
that. I tweeted this out from our account, but
the other five aren't our guys
that most people aren't going to name. Yes, J.D.
Martinez is one of them.
But the other guys are Cole
Calhoun. I believe it was
Reggie Sanders
did it three times. Erubeo DeRazzo
did it once. And then
there's one other guy I'm forgetting right now
at the top of my head but yeah just not your
normal usual suspects that you would think
have hit that many home runs in a short
span as members of this team but
our guy Jesse Friedman tweeted out
this incredible stat about
Ahueno Suarez and his last
162 games if you go back to this time last year
which is about the time when he caught fire
last season after his early season struggles
he through this 162
game stretch is hitting 279
335
605 slug of 55 home runs,
138 RBI,
32 doubles, and 114 runs scored.
So, yeah, that's some pretty incredible stats for Gino.
And that would put him as basically one of the best,
if not the best hitter in baseball over that 162 game stretch.
This guy now is potentially, oh, God.
Oh, and then there's that.
Now look who we got creeping in the corner.
35 home runs.
Yes, just five home runs until I have to die my stupid face teal.
Derek, how can that be?
It's only one series after the All-Star break.
Yeah, I don't know how that could be.
That's the middle of the season.
I remember when Gino went cold after his hot stretch early on.
And that was Damon the point.
You weren't here for it.
But that's when I decided to change the bet from 50 home runs down to 40,
just because I just wanted to get to this point faster, I guess.
I didn't want to drag out the inevitable dying of the beard.
So plus we have to have playoff stashes when the playoffs come around.
Well, duh.
Yeah, duh.
So we need to get the teal.
We are making the playoffs.
Now we are fully entrenched in this now.
We are buyers on this show.
We've kind of gone back and forth a little bit, you know, but now we've landed
firmly on being buyers at this point.
And Gino is a big reason why.
Corbyn Carroll also another huge reason why since 1940.
Corbyn Carroll is the eighth Major League Baseball player to reach.
39 or more triples in their first, 430 career games.
The last player to do so was Dexter Fowler with the Colorado Rockies back in 2009.
So Corbyn Carroll doing some amazing things.
In fact, per optostats, Corbyn Carroll has achieved something that no other player in baseball history has achieved.
Per optostats, Corbyn Carroll is the only player in Major League Baseball history with a season of four multi-homer games and a season with three.
multi triple games. It's crazy. It's actually crazy. So I don't know what to say about Corby and
what he's been able to do for this team. Like I said, he was actually in a little bit of a slump
over the course of June and July. And that's surprising because the Diamondbacks played
some of their best baseball of the season in the month of June. But yeah, I mean, Jack Summers
discussed this on Snake's territory, but I believe Corbyn Carroll was hitting like 179.
after the first game of this series, and that dated back to like May, I want to say 23rd.
So, again, an excellent job of Corbyn turning his season around.
But this was a thorough victory over the Cardinals.
I will say that this isn't the first sweep of the season for the Diamondbacks,
but it felt like the most complete sweep that they've had.
Let's take a look at the numbers from this series presented by our friends at Desert Financial Credit Union.
Diamondbacks here outscored the Cardinals 22 to 7.
They out homered the Cardinals, four to two.
They were tremendous with runners in scoring position.
Diamondbacks went four for 13 in game one, five for 11 in game two,
and then one for four in game three.
They were 10 for 28 for a 357 batting average with runners in scoring position.
And that is how you get the job done.
We've talked about how much they've struggled with runners in scoring position.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals, two for nine, 0 for seven, one for seven.
They were three for 23 in the series,
and they have a 130 batting average with runners and scoration.
scoring position. Starting pitching ERA, outrageous there for the Cardinals. In fact, I loved the
stat. They showed it on screen during the broadcast, but Sonny Gray's eight earned runs were as many
earned runs as he allowed in his last five starts combined, and the Cardinals got nicked up,
if you would there. Thanks for Tori for that phrase. They had a 13.50 ERA for their starting
pitching. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks allowed three earned runs from their starters in 19 innings
pitched seven shutout and seven innings shut out in game one six innings and one earned run in game two
six innings and two get earned runs in game three for a one point four two era for the starters
meanwhile cardinals bullpen a tremendous a 0.75 er a for them only one earned run allowed by
their bullpen in the in the three games so again there's something if you want to talk about the
diamondbacks once again having one component of their game not work it's the fact that they were
one of the best teams scoring late.
And in the series, they didn't do that, but they didn't really need to do that because
they had a pretty thorough lead in every single one of these games going into late innings,
and the Cardinals just had to try to claw their way back into it.
Meanwhile, the D-Backs ERA, bullpen, 4.50 ERA, not great, but still some pretty good performances
that the Diamondbacks are getting out of a few guys.
Anthony Descalfini, Descalfani, excuse me, he is a guy who absolutely has not been perfect.
just like Jake Woodford has not been perfect.
But both of these guys have allowed the Diamondbacks to, you know, save their arms,
not have to use several relievers when they come into a game and are able to hold these leads.
So things have been working out well for the Diamondbacks.
Can it continue?
Well, they have so many tests this month before the end of the month that, I mean,
the story is going to write itself.
The Diamondbacks kind of at this point at 50 and 50.
control their own destiny. But controlling their own destiny means that they have to win some tough series against tough competitors, including the Houston Astros who are here in town and the Diamondbacks take on tonight. So we're going to preview that series on the other side of this break. But before we do that, let's take a look at the drunken orgy of violence known as the National League West or the N-Hell West, if you will. The Dodgers just got swept by the Milwaukee Brewers who just refused to lose any baseball games. The Padres,
raise here. It's kind of making me, the whole
NL Central situation is really thrown
a wrench into our playoff
chances. Right, right. It's like, hey, why are you
guys all good? You're all supposed to be bad.
Exactly. And not only that, but they are like
running away in a way with that first spot.
Right now you have the Cubs and the Brewers now
tied. And the Cubs have the best
record in baseball, I believe.
Second. Second best record. So what you have
essentially is two of the
best teams with the best record baseball.
One of them is going to end up if they continue
down this road with that top
wild card spot without a doubt it's going to run away uh run away with it so again that that you're
right this greatly impacts the diamond backs chances here and that's the reason why we need to do
everything we can to win these critical series now again i have no idea what the diamondbacks
are actually going to do at the trade deadline but i feel like what we just saw in this three games
makes that decision much more difficult you know and and again it's why it's frustrating to
be a part of trying to figure out these decisions for Mike Hazen and his front office.
It's frustrating because you feel like this team is so much better than what we've seen this season.
And of course, the bullpen, big reason why, but that defense, those numbers I discussed there early about the defense is not the way the Diamondbacks defense has played this year.
And that is a big reason why the Diamondbacks were able to complete the sweep of the Cardinals.
Offense, things are going really well.
Gino again can't be stopped right now. It's great that he's doing this for this team. And if the Diamondback should choose not to trade Gino, he is going to be a powerful offensive weapon. On the flip side, at least if you want to have a silver lining to the idea of the Diamondbacks trading Gino Svarez, his value couldn't be higher right now. His value absolutely couldn't be higher. And as crazy as it is to trade away one of the best offensive players in baseball, if they do that, they should only do so.
if they're going to receive an absolute haul in return.
And part of that hall needs to be beyond prospects.
Part of that hall needs to be pitching that could make this team potentially competitive still beyond a trade of someone like Gino Svarez.
But I also don't know how they complete any kind of trade of any of their starting pitchers without receiving a starting pitcher in return.
They just don't have the pieces.
And at this point, not to attack our guy, Yuma and Lynn, but I don't really want to see him.
come up and be a starter for this team because I just don't think he's not ready he's ready and I feel like right now based on his numbers and his performance in Reno that he's inching closer to being that next guy up should the diamondbacks make a trade for gallon or Kelly they need to call somebody I mean I don't know what they're going to do I really don't I mean they could potentially look to one of these guys that they acquired that are long relievers in their bullpen to come up and help I know they've already asked disco to come up and and and
and make a spot start, which seemed to really help the starting rotation,
having that one day off and extending them by that one day.
But none of the answers to trading away one of the starters seems to be a great answer.
And the only part of that that would allow you to do so would be to receive a starting pitcher with years of control back.
Maybe not a great starting pitcher.
Maybe a young guy that really hasn't proven themselves yet,
but somebody that can still go out there and give you five innings every five days.
the diamond backs need that to start 2026 and should they not bring back azat galen or maryl kelly there's more confusion and it gets very murky as to what they're going to do next year for for some of these roles that they'll be missing guys you know from but regardless
Derek, I was talking last week with Jesse a little bit, and I went back to the Tyler Glassnow trade that the Dodgers made for Ryan Pepio.
And that was kind of a comparison I drew where I was like, you know, Tyler Glassnow, maybe kind of Zach Gallen in this situation.
Sure.
Maybe you're not going to re-sign him as a franchise.
You send him to a bigger market.
You get back a pitcher who is perceived to not be as good, but has multiple years on his contract left.
and maybe someone bites on something like that.
I think that that's the kind of move that you're talking about.
Absolutely. Absolutely.
And I think that's-
And Ryan Pepe is really good.
And that's the only move conceivably that they could make right now that would make sense.
Again, they're going to have those guys off the books if they don't bring them back.
So the Diamondbacks can just go out in free agency and acquire starting pitchers.
But considering right now that they're in the position, if they do sell, they have to sell with that in mind.
Like that's the only return that you can get that would validate losing someone like Gino.
And like Jesse said, there are going to be riots in the streets of downtown Phoenix if they trade Gino Swares right now.
So it's not going to be a popular decision regardless.
But like you said, sometimes in those moments, those decisions that aren't popular are the only way for you to get your franchise on track for the future.
And that's what the Diamondbacks have to deal with.
It's not even like a, it's not even like a, well, well, they might be in trouble.
No, it very much seems like next year until they get, you know, Corbyn Burns back.
and such that they really aren't going to have the starting rotation
that they need to be competitive.
So, I mean, that's kind of it.
Elise, known baseball GM, I love how she's talking like she's not Mike Hazen,
but she says, if we trade away a starting pitchy,
we aren't in the compete now mindset,
a trade will have to come from position player depth.
So when you say that, the only two players that you could trade away
are Gino and Josh Naylor.
And it feels, and it has always felt to me like Josh Naylor
has been the most likely candidate to be traded,
And it has nothing to do with the perception that he doesn't like it here and has everything to do with his value.
But again, I mean, Tristan English, he just had a big home run, I think last night for the Reno Aces.
He had already gotten called up.
He's a guy that a lot of people are very high on.
I just had dinner the other night with Stefan Carey, and he was very high on Tristan.
And he didn't like to see him get sent back down.
So perhaps, you know, the Diamondbacks move on to their first basement of the future.
Or, you know, again, we talked, James McCann has been taking some grounders.
over at first base.
Obviously, they will have Haven returning soon,
much to Elise and Damon's chagrin.
But they have options.
It's just, again, I mean, even at third, right?
If they do move on from Gino and trade him,
Blaze Alexander has been playing really well.
He had a four-game hitting streak to start here over this series.
But Blaze could very much be the third basement of the future.
I know, again, when you talk about praise internally,
I've heard a lot of good things about Blaze and his defense.
his attitude and just the fact that he is very ready to be here at a major league level.
He fits this franchise so well, like from a personality standpoint.
I could see how everyone would love him.
I love Blaze so much.
He's the best.
It's hard for me.
Again, there are certain people that I will openly tell you on this show that it's hard for me to be biased against.
And Blaze is one of them because he is just one of my favorite human beings.
And he's just such a sincerely nice guy.
I think he has a future here as a utility player.
I really do. I do too. I don't think he'll be this third basement of the future, but I think that, you know, if he continues to prove it, I mean, people, there was a time where people thought Jerry didn't have a future here. You're right. You just have to, if you put your head down, work and get better and you know what I mean? Like, there's, I don't think that there's any reason that he couldn't make it here. Well, and I, as much as I believe in Jordan Lawler and a lot of people feel like Jordan Lawler is the third basement of the future for this franchise, I have to see him hit a spinning ball before I can believe that he is. I have to see him hit a
that spins before I can believe that this man will be a major leaguer.
And quite frankly, Blaze has shown the ability to do everything at a major league level already.
He's made his mistakes, but that was last season.
This year, we've seen him play some really good defense.
And like you said, the fact that he can play multiple positions and offer that utility kind of factor seems to be something that will win him a lot of playing.
They love that, too.
Yeah.
Tori loves a player like that.
Yeah.
But, of course, we have more to talk about, including this upcoming series with the Astros and Christian
Walker returning to Chase Field as well as my thoughts on Cotel Marte missing time and why
it absolutely shouldn't matter to anybody out there.
So don't you go anywhere.
You're watching the PHA next time at Back Show.
Well, of course, our friends at Pure Edibles are here to make your mood better, whether
you are looking for to uplift your mood or whether you're looking to get a good night's
sleep or anything in between.
You can check out the full array of candies that Pure Edibles has to offer.
And they are a full-fledged candy company offering more than just gummies.
offer hard candies, choose kicks, as you see there on screen, which are their version of
Starbursts and so much more. And of course, their tins all show you the exact dose and, I guess,
effect that you're going to receive from each gummies. So those are clearly listed and there
will be no surprises on what to expect. Pure was created in Flagstaff, Arizona, at Nobore
dispensary, the home of Pure Edibles and is now made right here in Phoenix, Arizona. And they offer
gummies for sleep support as well as candies with that uplifting effect derived from unique cannabinoid.
So go find yourself some pure edible products from one of over 130 dispensaries across the fine state of Arizona.
And our friends at APS want to help you out because July is a time not only to celebrate America,
but also for those energy bills to kind of skyrocket with how hot it is here in Arizona.
But a smart thermostat can help manage your energy cost.
A smart thermostat works with your APS rate plan to help you automatically adjust the temperature in your home.
Like I told you guys, I was doing that from an island in the Caribbean and you can do it from wherever you are.
It's important.
And again, I leave my house all the time, crank that air conditioning and forget all about it.
I have dogs, so I tend to like want them to be comfortable.
But dogs don't need it to be 72 degrees in the house.
They really don't.
So of course, when I forget to turn it down, my smart thermostat, my phone, my app, all that works together so I can control my all of that from wherever I am.
And APS customers right now can find instant rebates, discounts, and special.
offers on not only smart thermostats, but energy-efficient appliances and more at
marketplace.apos.com. APS customers may be eligible for smart thermostats as low as $0
when you enroll in the APS Cool Rewards program. You already have a smart thermostat at home,
see if it's eligible to enroll in cool rewards, plus free installation is available at
marketplace.appos.com. Must be an APS customer in pay shipping and taxes. Other restrictions do
apply. Go to Marketplace.APS.com for more information. All right, Damon. Well, the Diamondbacks
have a tough competitor coming into town.
And again, the Houston Astros are just one of those teams, man.
They really struggled early on.
We know Christian Walker struggled early on.
He was injured.
He missed quite a bit of time.
But those Astros turn things around, man.
They currently lead the AL West.
And let's take a look at their numbers at a glance for the 2025 season.
Astros currently have a record of 57 and 42 with a plus 58 run differential.
But they are three and seven in their last 10 games.
They also recently had a fairly lengthy extra innings game in their previous series.
So you love to see that when you have to take on that team,
especially when you take a look at their relief pitching ERA.
Their OPS as a team is 732, which is good for 12th in Major League Baseball.
Starting pitching ERA is 3.84, which is tied for ninth.
Relief pitching, 3.31, third in baseball.
Also out above average, 21, which is also third in baseball.
those are numbers that I absolutely envy.
And I wish that the Diamondback, if the Diamond,
all I need the Diamondbacks to have is that relief pitching ERA.
And if they did, you're talking about the N.L. West leading Arizona Diamondbacks.
Do you remember that postgame show we did last year where I joined the stream and I had Utopia in the background behind me?
That's what the, that's what the world would be if the Diamondbacks had a top five bullpen in baseball.
It really would be utopic.
Oh, man.
Also, can we talk about Christopher?
Walker in this picture. We sure can. How many times did he show a motion like this in Arizona?
As a guy who put Christian Walker on a lot of thumbnails and pictures and graphics, you're an
expert on that in a way. This is kind of making me sick to my stomach looking at this. We never got this
side of Christian Walker. You're not wrong, but it will be great to see Walker back at Chase Field.
Maybe not so great. I mean, I want him to do well, just not well in the next three games.
You know what I mean? His career numbers at Chase Field. He's slashed 247, 331.
465 for his 796 OPS in his career
and has not played here since joining the Astros.
This will be his first return to the Chase Field.
So that's great.
Day Walker says, well, that's a walk-off picture,
so he's showing emotion.
But that's true.
That's fair.
However, I still kind of, I'm on Damon's side a little bit about this one.
And I just love emotion.
So I would love to see Christian Walker show a little bit more.
But he also was just, I don't know,
There was something about him that was the consummate, like, kind of dad of the squad.
He wasn't old enough to be, but he just kind of was, right?
Speaking of players being back, though,
Cattel Marte is back in the lineup after missing three games due to his home being robbed
while he was away in Atlanta during the All-Star break.
And there is a lot of conversation and discourse around this that kind of makes me sick.
I won't lie.
The idea here that Marte, like, there's a lot you could say here.
According to our guy Alex Weiner, Marte, had $400,000 worth stolen from his house.
Those items range from obviously jewelry and other things to personal items.
But it's crazy that there is a discourse about Cotel Marte in some way being soft or this being a problem, right?
Like it sucks that it happened and it's it's not an ideal time.
I think that's probably the biggest thing that are on some there are some people
who I'm you know me.
I'm not making people.
I'm not giving people more clout and name and names,
but you know exactly who I'm talking about.
There are some people that have even suggested that the Diamondbacks trade could tell
Marte at the trade deadline,
which is one of the most preposterous things I've ever heard in my entire life,
quite frankly.
I understand people's feelings on this, much like an injury, things like this happened at an inopportune time.
Gino Svarez was hit in the hand during the All-Star game.
Could you imagine how stupid it would have been to lose Gino during the regular season, especially with how hot he is right now due to him getting hit in the hand during the All-Star game?
But if he did and it happened, it sucks and it's just something that happened.
It doesn't make Gino soft nor does it make anything else of the situation different.
It would just be a loss due to injury.
And in a way, Cotel Marte, having his personal life,
violated while he was away at the All-Star game and needing some time is kind of similar to an injury.
I completely disagree with the idea that this type of thing makes him soft, considering that
baseball is such a goddamn mental game that you expect him to go out there and still be the
player he was while still having all of this on his mind. It's already going to be hard enough
for him to move past it mentally anyway, having the three days off. Obviously, the fact that the
Diamondback swept the Cardinals makes this conversation, or at least my position on it, much easier.
But I still don't think that anybody, anybody that is saying that Catelle Marte is soft or should be traded really understands the value of Cotel Marte.
I can understand people not liking it.
And I know people are going to have their opinions.
But some of you take the day off from work if you have a little cough.
So don't come at me with why you take days off from work.
Sometimes we just need a mental health day.
And quite frankly, if I had nearly half a million dollars of items stolen from me, I probably would need several myself.
So I think that it's a ridiculous argument.
And I think that the idea that Cotel Marte is somehow now expendable or you don't want them to be a part of the team is insane.
It really is insane.
And I haven't seen this man in our chat in a very long time.
But Josh Hunt, Hunt Star 05, let's see here.
Put it up there.
It says it really shows the insensitivity of people we won't name.
It's not even the cash loss that's devastating, but the mental damage done.
A man's castle shouldn't have to be a fortress.
hard to feel safe.
And we've talked about it in the office.
Obviously, that's going to be part of it.
Cotell Marte makes enough money that the value of this is not the issue at all.
Nor is it just the fact that, oh, hey, some thieves broke in and stole some stuff.
There is more to it than that, and especially when you are a baseball player who has gone away for 81 games per season,
leaving your family in that house alone by themselves.
So I think that there is a right to not only have to kind of get over at mental,
but perhaps make some changes in his life to add some unnecessary security but necessary security
so that he can have peace of mind when he's not home. To say he's soft or to say that he somehow
needs to be traded now is is the most backwards old school ridiculous thinking that you can have
because Cotel Marte has given so much to this team and he has even gone on record recently as
saying that he is he is from Arizona now. That is where he is from. This is a man that definitely
you know, loves this, loves this valley, loves the team, loves the city, and wants to embrace it.
But again, something like this happening, that makes your relationship with society and the city and people around you just a little bit harder to love and value as much as you used to.
You just have this sense of violation and it's hard to get over that.
And I'm fine with him missing time.
but also these are probably similar people that thought what happened to him with the Chicago White Sox fan was soft in some way or whatever.
And again, I don't.
I back up my players and I know that, again, baseball is one of those games that if you're going out there and going to go 0 for 4, 04, 04, 5, what use are you, you know, to the competitiveness of the team, especially when you're not all there on the field.
you're mentally you're someplace else because of what happened right so i don't know man i didn't
think i honestly didn't think this was going to turn in this direction but i was also surprised
i will say i was surprised to hear that kattel was taking time off because it was just something
after i found out about the burglary it wasn't something i thought about but when i did hear that
it just made sense to me that's that's all i had to say is that when when i found out in our in our
in our press conference with Tori on Friday that could tell it was out of the lineup due to this.
I took a moment to process it and thought, yeah, it makes sense.
You know, take the time you need to get your situation personally straight and then come back
and be 100% committed to winning on the field once again.
I understand how you might not be considering all that stuff is going on, right?
But I think too much, too often, you know, people think of celebrities not as real people.
This is the reason why people bash them on social media.
This is the reason why all of this stuff kind of is so callous is because
athlete celebrities tend to not be real people to us.
So when they have something like items stolen from them or have, you know, whatever, you know,
it's you're too quick to be like, oh, well, he makes $14 million a year.
So what?
That has nothing to do with this.
And it's everything to do with the fact that, you know, Marte went through a pretty
violating experience and kind of needs to get over.
it before returning to the field.
And Elise,
Elise keeps her mind on the right stuff.
Elise says my only criticism of Ketel this year is his random inability to turn two efficiently.
He missed a lot of double plays this year because of it.
That's all I can be mad about at him about.
Thank you.
Thank you for having your mind in the right place.
But like I said, the Diamondbacks do take on the Houston Astros tonight.
Let's take a look at the probable pitchers for this series because we got Zach Gallen going
on the mound here in game.
one and I do not hate this.
I don't hate the way the Diamondback starting
rotation is currently stacked.
I do not hate this, Damon. I don't hate Brandon
fought essentially right now being in the number
one spot. And then you get
Merrill Kelly and then you get Ryan
Nelson. Then in a series like this, the next
three game series, you get Zach Gallin leading
off in game one, you get
Erod in game two and then you got it coming back
around to Brandon fought in game three.
And I really kind of like
the way that the rotation is currently
just configured. I
I do.
I mean,
Zach Allen in a big game against a good team.
I just wish it was on the road.
Yeah.
And not at home.
But I feel so much better.
I do feel better about him playing a team like the Astros than a team like the White Sox.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
Oh, yeah.
For sure.
And then, you know, I think the, you know, to be frank, the worst pitcher that we have out of
these three is Erod and, you know, that's going up against their ace.
Yeah, exactly.
So like, it's almost like a sacrificial game in the series in a way.
But we do have Fran Bervaldez going in game two with his two.
0.75 ERA and his
125 strikeouts against Erod
who is 3 and 6 this year with a 5.94
ERA. Zach Gallin in game
one against Colton Gordon. He is
3 and 2 with a 4.67 ERA
and then that that dastardly
TBD they're going in game 3 against
Brandon fought zero
zero ERA but hey no
decisions for TBD either so there's that
but yeah a lot of people are already
writing off game two. I
don't know about that like I know
E-Rod had a really bad start
his last outing. However, if you look at the
body of work since returning from that injury,
he hasn't been terrible. Maybe
we get the non-terrible E-Rod tonight.
Lando says, I want Tigers E-Rod
as we all do. We would love
to see Tigers E-Rod go out there and shove.
And quite frankly, with the time off,
we might. We might.
The time off for E-Rod last time seemed good,
so hopefully him coming out.
But much like Damon said, I don't love his chances
against Framber Valdez.
If that's the game that we lose,
then at least you're not necessarily losing, you know, with one of your studs in there.
At least if that's what you want to call Brandon Fott and Zach Gallen, because that's what I want to call them.
So, but what we are going to do, we're going to move on from this because you know what today is.
Today is Monday.
And we do that thing on Monday that we do every Monday.
And we're going to do it after this break.

this show, but I'll say it again, every goddamn year on this year, on this show is our year.
Every year on this show, on the PHNX Diamondback show is the year of the snake.
Every month is Black History Month.
Every month is Hispanic Heritage Month.
And every month is Women's History Month.
And every week, even though this actually is Shark Week, is Shark Week.
They just do it one week over there at Discovery or maybe three weeks.
I don't know.
We do it 52 weeks a year over here because every week is Shark Week.
Every day is Earth Day because we recycle.
But on Mondays, we go to the mailbag.
Damon, let's go the mailbag.
All right, Damon, what are we got in the mailbag?
All right, Damon, what are we got in the mailbag today?
First question here comes from Travis Moore says,
The guys need to go 40 and 22 to be in a good position for a wild card spot by the end of the season.
How realistic is that in your mind?
That's tough.
That is tough.
And Travis is not holding.
back there because that record gets them to 90 and 72.
And it's hard to imagine that it's not going to take that in order for the Diamondbacks
to make the playoffs.
Now, there is a lot of controlling their own destiny in there because one thing that factors
in is how many games this team still has left against the teams that are in front of them
in the wild card.
That includes the Brewers, which is very scary right now with the way they're playing.
but it also includes many, many games against the Padres and the Giants.
And that is probably the bigger factor here is how do they perform against those teams that are above them in the wildcard hunt?
I don't know a 40 and 22 is very likely.
However, I told you guys on Friday, I watched Moneyball on the plane, both going to Puerto Rico and coming home.
And I have never been more fired up for a 20-game one streak in my entire life.
So do I believe it's possible?
Yeah, I do because baseball is just weird like that.
And I feel like the Diamondbacks right now are in an underdog position that they thrive in.
And could be why we're seeing them play such a good baseball,
at least in this series against the Cardinals.
Now, I would have to honestly see how they perform against the Astros.
And then following that, they have a series against the Pirates.
I keep giving them these stupid stretches.
Like, how do they do over the next eight games?
How do they do over the next 12?
Can they do this?
And every time they've kind of failed those tests and they really haven't proven to be able to come out of those situations with a with a superior winning record.
Maybe in some cases they came out with just above 500.
But that's what they've played all season long.
Being just above 500 is probably not going to be enough to get them to the postseason.
And I think that's the most difficult decision that this front office has to make by the end of this month is that exact.
prediction. Do they feel like this team can go 40 and 22? Hell, I think this team can win 62
games straight. But, I mean, that's only because I just watched them win three in a row. And I'm more
pumped than ever. But I think 40 and 22 is pretty difficult. And I think, again, in order for them
to get the job done, maybe they don't have to go that many. But I mean, you're not wrong, Travis.
It's not much, it's not much less than that. Could maybe say 38 and 24 or something like that.
but you are still right there in the neighborhood of absolutely what they need to do in order for them to make the playoffs.
We got a couple of super chats real fast.
Let's take care of those before we move on to the next question.
Carlos in the super chat, thank you for your super chat.
He says, Derek, how does it feel knowing that there's a real possibility you may have to dye the beard, teal before the trade deadline?
Now, that one would hurt the most.
Yes.
Having to die it before the trade deadline, but then they also still move, Gino, would be the absolute worst case scenario.
It couldn't be worse than that.
I don't know how I could rebound from that.
I really don't.
That would be an immense amount of pain, Derek.
Yeah.
However, I mean, it's going to hurt to have to dye my beard teal,
and I feel like that's inevitable regardless of what's going to happen.
I've already been shopping.
Teal dies, and I found some wonderful ones for like $12.
And $99.
So it's not going to cost me nearly as much as I thought.
Piece of Yoshi.
Thank you for your super chat.
He says, bonus question.
How many non-kid-friendly words do we think it uttered in the Lovolo House?
after Gino got hit in the All-Star game.
17, but in a row, right, without like other words in between them.
It was just like F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb, F-bomb,
but yeah, no, there were definitely a lot of curse words.
I was in a tropical paradise and I was screaming curse words,
but that's also because it was very late,
and I realized how hard it is to be an East Coast sports fan when I was on the island.
So there's that.
I don't ever want to go back to that world, Damon.
Never.
Let's go on.
What else we got?
Next question here comes from basketball and football guy says.
When Shelby Miller and Jalen Beeks come off the IL, who do you expect DFAID or Centerino?
That's, that is an unfortunate, that is an unfortunate question, honestly, because that is true.
That is going to be what is going to occur.
And I know regardless of what happens, I don't really love.
the decisions that the Diamondbacks are going to have to make
their, for their, you know, for their active pitchers.
Like, I think that when they return, I don't, I think Andrew
Saul Frank is probably a likely candidate to get sent down.
And I think perhaps John Curtis or Jake Woodford would be DFA'd.
That would be my guess.
I would think that Curtis hasn't pitched great.
I think Jake Woodford's pitched a little better.
So if you were asking me right now, I would think that Andrew Saul-Frank would get sent down and John Curtis would be DFA.
That's my best guess.
You also have the fact that Ryan Thompson will be returning as well from the IL.
So there's one more spot that they're most likely going to need.
I don't see it being Kyle Backus because that man should not go anywhere.
He is a major league baseball player and he is in my bullpen forever.
So I don't know.
But again, there's also, you know, the fact that they right now have the three catchers.
I don't know what they're going to do with that.
And a couple of other things.
So I don't know.
I'll tomorrow Vargas, that's another guy when he comes off the 10-day IL.
They're going to have to also figure out that.
So some roster decisions that aren't going to be great, but hopefully they can,
you can move this team in the right direction for sure.
All right, Damon, what else we got?
next question here is from russell and russell says how many more home runs will gino have before being traded or before the season
jinos warres is currently on pace to have 53 home runs this season so regardless of me changing my bet i feel like
i was going to have to dye my beard teal at some point uh regardless but uh i will say that if you're talking
about before the trade deadline he's going to have 41 that's why he's going to have 41 that's why he's going to have
41 for sure before the trade that line.
Or maybe just 40. Maybe right
at 40 just enough to make
me die my beard and then the Diamondbacks trade him.
I hope that's not the case. I know we have more
questions about it, but... If he has that
many, I actually feel pretty confident that he
wouldn't be traded because that probably means that
the debacks are winning some baseball games.
You're right. Probably. You're right.
Granted, we did lose when he hit four.
There's nine days left in the month, right?
I mean, we're asking him to have five
home runs and he just did six
and five games.
It doesn't seem very, it doesn't seem like it's not out of the question.
It does not seem like it's not the question.
But I do agree with you that if he does have 40 before the trade deadline, how do you trade him?
How do you trade him?
How do you trade him?
I just don't know.
I don't know how you do that.
I do know that the month of September, though, is extremely difficult for this team.
And I don't love the way.
I don't love the way the scheduling rolled out for them.
So that could also factor into whether this team thinks or this front office.
thinks that they should be buyers or sellers come to trade deadline.
Well, else we got, Damon, let's go on the next one.
Yeah, next question here is from Andy.
And Andy asks, if we do end up trading Gino, does Andres Munoz solve all of our
bullpen problems, hoping we go on a tear and we end up being buyers myself?
You guys just really want to hurt Shane's feelings.
And I like that.
I like that.
Andres Munoz this year has a 1.46 ERA with 48 strikeouts and a 0.89.
whip i would i would trade you for him damon right now on the spot i think i would trade me
for him i wouldn't even i wouldn't even ask but that's how much i love this franchise i don't
um i don't know why i don't know how andres munoz would be the factor i don't think that
the seattle mariners are going to trade back for gno um but i also don't think that they're
trading andres munoz at all at all i don't love their chances but i also think that that man is
under control for that team for a while so i don't see you
them necessarily needing to trade them away at this point.
But I do know, going back to that question,
I do know that if the Diamondbacks can somehow get somebody to offer them a pitcher anywhere
close as a reliever to Munoz's status, it's hard.
It's hard not to consider trading them whoever they're asking for.
And that even goes for a starter because if we're talking about guys right now or what the
Diamondbacks need right now, they kind of need somebody that can be the definitive closer
for this team.
And if they can figure out a way to get that in a trade, that could completely change their season
more than even keeping Gino.
A piece of you.
She says, imagine it's just Carlos Vargas again.
No, I don't want to.
All right.
Damon, let's go ahead and get another one from the mailbag.
What else we got?
Yeah, we got next question here.
coming from Mickey in State 48 says if this current roster is better than the
2023 roster, then why can't we get an elite bullpen arm and go for it?
All we need is the sixth seed and it's a fresh season.
Man, I love this.
Mickey, you're talking me into it right now.
Yeah, Mickey, can we get you in the clubhouse or at least in maybe in Mike Hazen's
suite at a game for three innings?
I don't know either.
And I'm sure that I think this tweet is exactly the problem.
problem with the 2025 Arizona Diamondbacks is it is hard to look at this team and not think
that this team is better than the 2023 team that made it all the way to the World Series.
It's hard to look even at this pitching staff with their terrible atrocious numbers
and not think that this pitching staff in its current state is also better than the
2023 pitching staff.
Mind you, a lot of it is the same guy.
So not trying to throw dirt.
I'm just saying like overall, I know the performances haven't been satisfactory.
I know Brandon Fott and Zach Allen's ERAs are terrible,
but all that really says is what they've done so far
and isn't a true indication of the pitcher that they are going forward.
It just means that they've had some crappy starts this year,
and some of them, including the yes hitter by Brandon Fought,
balloon the ERA to a point where it's going to hard to bring it back down,
no matter how many good starts you have, right?
But I don't know.
I mean, I'll say overall this team is,
it does seem more talented.
The bullpen is a mess, and I don't think the bullpen is more talented,
but the bullpen really back then wasn't very good.
Adding Paul Seawald was the factor that brought some form of stability to the bullpen
and changed everything for this team, allowed them to have the September that they did
and make it not only into the postseason, which they limped in again.
They limped in then, but they still managed to do something crazy once they were in.
Last year, they almost limped in again, but didn't.
Right. So the last two seasons have been very similar.
And if the Diamondbacks keep on this particular trajectory, this year might be similar to where they might get a chance to just make it into the playoffs or just miss the playoffs.
But the talent of the roster, honestly, is far better than the record indicates.
And I really feel like at the end of the day, the bullpen has been the bullpen and the defense have been the two factors as to why the Diamondbacks right now sit at 50 and 50 and not at least.
at least as crazy as the sound, 60 and 40, right?
I mean, is it.
It really is that.
It's that big of a difference.
It sounds, it does sound crazy to say, but this offense.
It sounds crazy to say that the defense and the bullpen cost this game, this team 10 games.
But I bet most of you in this chat right now can think of 10 games off the top of your head that the bullpen blew or the defense blew.
So, yeah, I mean, and 60 and 40 puts them in first place in the National League West.
I just want to remind you of that, but puts them at the best.
record in baseball in fact. All right. Well, I did want to remind you guys that our pickle ball
tournament is coming up this weekend. It's going to be a great time. If you haven't had a chance
to check out chicken and pickle, come on out. It's going to be a blast. You can sign up over at our
website at go phnx.com. And again, it's great time to hang out with other diehards. It's a great
time to hang out with us. Unfortunately, I will not be able to be there because it is my mother's
birthday and I have to go be a good son. But I'm still going to be old. I'm still going to be
over there close to chicken and pickles.
So if I can sneak away, I'm going to come to hang out with you guys too.
But make sure to check out the wonderful pickleball tournament.
It starts this Saturday at 10 a.m.
Yeah, since it does start at 10, I think I will be there.
I think I will stop in because I have to go to my brother's house.
It's in that area.
So we'll be there.
Make sure to come join us.
Have some drinks.
Play some pickleball.
Of course, that tournament is not only an absolute blast to participate in,
but the proceeds go to big brothers, big sisters.
And we love that.
So anything we can do to help out big brothers, big sisters, big part of that.
Plus, again, a great time to hang out with our community.
If you are new to the PHNX community, let me tell you, these events are where you're going to meet your new best friends.
I just have to tell you that.
I just have to say that some people in this chat now independently hang out without us all the time.
It kind of breaks my heart.
It makes me a little sad.
I wish I was still involved.
But again, come out, hang out with the crew.
We're going to have a great time.
Damon, we have some more questions there from the mailbag.
Yeah, we absolutely do, Derek.
Let's hit him.
What do you got?
Next one comes from PCO.
She says, who on earth is this team's set up, man?
I don't know.
Who is this team's set up, man?
Who's this team's closer?
Is it Kevin Ginkle?
Yeah.
Is Kevin Ginkle the closer?
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, then if Kevin Ginkle is your closer, I am using, oh, God.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Kendall Graveman?
Kyle Backus?
Like again,
Kyle Backus is now in that left-handed position, right?
Of being not the only lefty in the bullpen right now
with Andrew Saul-Frank there,
but Kyle Backus, to me, is your next best option
even as a closer, right, with the way he's pitching.
And since you do have two lefties in the bullpen
and will when Jalen Beeks returns,
then I would be willing to use Kyle Backus
in that high-levered situation in the eighth inning,
and then let Jalen Beaks be your guy
that can kind of come in for the other lefties
in relief and six and seven.
So that's the direction I'm leading.
But it's definitely not who you thought you would see in there
at the beginning of the year, that's for sure.
But yeah, I agree there.
Ginkl is closed your back as a setup.
Disco as Longman and then everyone else's middle relief.
Yep, I can agree with Peace of Yoshi on that.
All right, Damon.
What else we got?
Next question.
comes from All-Star Crobin Carroll enthusiasts.
It says, what's more likely to happen first?
A Corbyn Carroll three-triple game or Derek dying his beard to heal.
Corbyn Carroll three-triple game almost happened.
Yeah, you got close.
It was stopped by one Blaze Alexander who just, I mean, I guess we should blame it on Sean Larkin.
Blaze would have gone.
You didn't have to tell Blaze to run.
Blaze would have gone.
I think Corbin still should have ran a third and then just shoved,
blaze off the base.
That's what I would have done.
And then he would have already had a three triple game.
No, I'm sure of it.
I'm 100% sure that me dying my beard is going to happen first.
100% sure.
Lando in the chat just said Pavin and Jake for Ryan Halsley.
And I've never got more excited about something than that because I know it's not going to happen, but you can have them right now.
I would drive them.
I'll fucking throw Damon in on that deal.
I will throw Damon in on that deal.
I mean, I don't think you needed to throw me in on the deal.
I literally just said I was going to drive him and I offered to do that.
travel-wise, free of charge for everybody.
And then you said, keep them.
Yeah.
I was like, you can take him too.
Yeah.
I'll pack his bags for me.
Yeah, one-way ticket.
No bother coming back.
Elizabeth Zabe, aka Zabe in the chat, says, we love blaming Larkin.
We really do.
We really do love blaming Larkin.
All right.
Let's get one more in here.
And then we've got to get out of here.
Next question comes from Michael Rokickey.
And Michael asks, so I know everyone is obsessed with Derek and the teal hair, but what will
Damon do if Perdombo goes to...
100 RBI.
A hundred RBI.
Damon, what are you going to do for 100 RBI?
I didn't see this until right now.
It's very much on the spot.
I mean, he's at 72 already.
Yeah, he's going to get to 100 RBI.
For sure.
Yeah.
Like for sure.
No facial hair?
Oh, my God.
It's hideous.
I don't know if anybody is ready for that.
Remember I did that on an accident once?
And Bob Rock walked in here and said, what the hell happened?
That was the first thing he said.
I think that's when the wheels got put in motion to move.
you from that show to this show.
I believe that was really when it well.
You couldn't take looking at your bald face anymore.
Ernesto says, just shave the stash.
Ugh, that's, that's even worse.
Go, go, go, AJ Pock, with the facial hair.
And here's Kevin, Kevin out of nowhere.
You'll have to address this on your U of A show later.
I'm not a clown, Kevin.
He'll streak in the hair.
He said streaks.
Oh, you should do a rainbow wig with all sorts of different colors.
and a big giant red nose.
I think you should get a frog tattoo.
That's what I think you should get.
I think you should get a matching frog tattoo if Domo does it.
I think that's the fitting.
We'll figure something.
Yeah, we'll figure something out for sure.
But we love you guys.
We appreciate you guys for your questions.
Of course, as always, you guys make Mailbag Monday what it is.
So again, thank you so much for providing those to us.
We will be back tomorrow with another post game show.
Make sure to join us for that.
In the meantime, follow us on Twitter.

So join us again tomorrow night.
We'll be back here.
Until then.
Big week of games, Derek.
Big week of games.
Huge.
Huge.
We got Christian Walker back here.
So maybe I hope I don't have to play the Walker Walker Walker Walker song,
but I might just do it just for the memories.
But we'll figure that out.
As much as we'll figure out what Damon's going to do
when Pardomo hits those 100 RBI.
But thank you guys again.
Appreciate you for stopping by.
We will see you tomorrow.
Until then, behave yourselves and remember kids.
Baseball is fun, but it is so much more fun
when Gino and Corbyn are setting records.
