Hello and welcome to the PHNX D-Backs podcast right here on PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX, and I am thrilled to have you guys join us.
Of course, this show is brought to you by Draft Kings and their sportsbook app.
Go download the Draft King Sportsbook app now and use our code of PHNX.
New customers can bet just $5 on any NFL team to win their game, and if they do, you will win $200 in free bets.
Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
It's that simple.
I told you guys to go bet on the Cardinals last week.
I told you it was a sure thing.
I hope you listened to me.
And I hope you got your $200 in free bets.
Guys, I, of course, am joined by my vice mayor, my co-host, my friend.
It's Thunderstick, Jesse Friedman.
Derek, the Dodgers are no longer in the postseason.
Hold on.
There it is.
There is.
I bought that celebratory beer with you.
Go ahead, sir.
It was a fun game to watch, honestly.
Saturday night's game, Dodgers, Braves.
I was, I was completely prepared, Derek, for that game to turn south on the Braves once again
and for the Dodgers to take over, game seven.
Always felt the whole game like they were going to break through, didn't it?
The entire game, it was just like, oh, this is the inning, this is when it happens,
and it never came.
It was, it was so close, though.
I mean, in, I think it was the seventh inning, the Dodgers, it was, it was four to two at that point.
and the Dodgers had second and third nobody out.
And it was like, okay, I mean, the game is like basically tied.
And then the Braves turned to Tyler Matzek, the man, the myth, the legend,
who was absolutely ridiculous.
I mean, it is one thing to come out and get three outs.
It's another thing to just like, like, they just, like the Dodgers hitters just had no
answer for Matzek.
He's a lefty.
He throws hard.
He's got killer breaking stuff.
And it was just so fun to watch him.
He finished the seventh inning.
He even pitched into the eighth inning as well.
And then they went to Will Smith to close things out in the ninth.
It was it was a glorious evening of baseball, Derek.
I enjoyed it.
And I have a feeling that you felt the same way.
Oh, I loved every minute of it, Jesse.
I loved every minute of it.
And you can say what you want.
The Dodgers, I will 100% agree that the Dodgers were affected heavily by the injuries
that, you know, kept their players off the field.
all of the teams in the playoffs experienced not only injuries to their team,
but significant injuries to star players that changed their team, you know, substantially.
So it wasn't just the Dodgers.
The Dodgers, in my opinion, were still the deepest team in the playoffs.
Oh, yeah.
Even with their, you know, pitching circle being so small, as people have said,
that pitching circle that included Max Scherz or Walker Bueller, Julio Urius, plus
Kenley Jansson, Blake Trinen, Coring, Nable.
I mean, there was, they still had plenty compared to what other teams have, right?
Yeah.
But I will say that I am not sad, Jesse, to see them go.
In fact, I'm so not sad that I wrote a little poem about it, Jesse.
You wrote a poem?
I wrote, well, I mean, it's a, it's a, it's a, I don't know you write poems. I write poetry sometimes. I sing songs. I climb mountains. I am a surprising human being. So okay. And I wrote an homage to the great children's book, Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. And I'd like to, I'd like to read a little bit of it for you now, Jesse. I mean, this is, don't give you wrong. This goes on for 127 pages, but I'll just give you a taste of, uh, uh, I'll just give you a taste of, uh, uh,
of how it starts.
How it goes that.
Good night, Dodgers.
Good night, bets.
Good night winning by getting into debt.
Good night, Muncie.
Good night, belly.
Good night to that face made by Joe Kelly.
Good night, Scher.
Good night to the Turner's.
Good night on Twitter to Dave Roberts Burners.
Good night, Dodgers.
It has been fun.
watching you spend so much to only get one.
Now, that's just some of it, Jesse.
That's just some of it.
Like I said, it's 127 pages of that.
I'm going to happily publish it and get it out hopefully before the World Series concludes.
But we do have our World Series now.
It does not include the Los Angeles Dodgers,
but it does include your baby faces, the Atlanta Braves,
versus those dastardly heals the Houston Astros.
So do the, do the, do the, do the, do the baby faces, do the underdog Atlanta Braves have enough to overcome the Houston Astros and all of their ways, quote, unquote, of playing baseball?
Well, first of all, that was, that was pretty incredible, Derek.
I have to give you props for that.
Well, thank you, I appreciate it.
Like I said, I will happily write you poetry.
anytime my friend yeah no i'm gonna have to dig you up on that now i didn't i didn't know it's such a
hidden talent of yours over there um yeah no this is going to be interesting um it honestly
it's a much more exciting world series than it would have been if the dodgers were in it i think
we all feel that way um and this atlanta braves team is kind of sneaky i mean let's face it the dodgers
are probably a better team in the alanda braves like not probably they are um but the braves just
went off. I mean, Eddie Rosario, your man, Eddie Rosario, Derek, he had a home run again in game
seven, or in game six, a two run shot. That was ultimately the difference in the game. And I mean,
it's hard to bet against this team right now, just given some of these guys who came out of the
woodwork guys that are not necessarily household names like Eddie Grasario and, you know,
Austin Riley, like a lot of these players on the Braves are not guys that, you know,
many of us are necessarily all that familiar with this coming into the series.
But, yeah, I mean, this is going to be a lot of fun.
I think the Astros have their own issues to deal with.
Lance McCullors is officially out for the World Series, which is going to be a huge deficit
for them.
It's obviously one of one of their better starting pitchers.
They may do against the Red Sox.
They were, you know, of course, they were able to get to this point.
but I think this is fairly even in my book.
I honestly could see this going either way,
especially given just how hot the Atlanta Braves have been.
I mean, the Atlanta Braves just took down what I think is one of the most talented
baseball teams that have been in the postseason in a long time.
I mean, this Dodgers roster is insanity.
And coming off of that, it's pretty hard to bet against them right now.
Yeah, no, I mean, I agree.
Again, it's, it's, it,
It's a great matchup, and it's one of those situations where the injuries really affect both teams.
You have no idea which way it's going to go.
I still feel like the Astros are favored just based on their experience, right?
Yeah, I think that the Braves team, though, they have, they have that thing that every team in baseball should always be scared about going up against.
And I'm not even going to say momentum, right?
It's just that ability to catch fire and believe in yourself at the right time,
having that next man up kind of, you know, mindset, right?
Like, that's what the Braves really seem to be doing.
But same thing with the Astros.
The Astros have had their young guys step up as well and help them get to this point.
So it's, I just think that the Braves right now feel like the unstoppable force in the playoffs,
no matter if they're the underdog or the favorite.
It just feels it feels like they have that something.
You know, I wrote an article that everybody can check out on GoPHNX.
It'll be posted tonight or in the morning.
But it's about the Dodgers, you know, and their exit from the playoffs.
Did you publish your poem?
Yeah, it's all 10027 pages of the poem.
You get that as a, you guys better pay for that subscription.
You're really getting your money's worth it.
It's worth it right there.
It's worth it right there.
You get the annual membership.
You get my poem and a free t-shirt.
That's all you need, right?
But I will say that one of the things I discuss is, you know, just the Dodgers spending, right?
The Dodgers have been the top spending, the highest payroll in baseball five out of the last 10 years, right?
Yeah.
You can't argue with the success they've had because they have arguably been the most successful team consistently in the last 10 years in any sport, not just baseball, right?
But I'm talking about regular season success.
not postseason success, not championship success.
And it's really interesting when you look at the numbers,
how many of the last 10 World Series winners weren't in the top five as far as spending goes?
Or even some of them weren't in the top 10, right?
Yeah.
It really, it does become about that thing in the playoffs.
And that's, it's that, it's that, I don't know what, you know, it's that charisma.
It's that it's, again, you call it momentum.
You can call it anything you want.
It just feels like teams get on a roll at the right time.
And that is usually when you get like a Kansas City Royals, you know, winning it or, you know, a Giants team like they've done in the past over the last 10 years, winning it multiple times.
Just the last team you might suspect to win it, but the team that just gets hot at the right time.
And the Braves feel like they're that.
But speaking of Go PhNX, please go over.
I will put the poem on the web.
website if it'll get you to sign up. So go sign up for an annual membership. Of course,

So excited to get that going.
But also, just as a reminder, hop over to draftkings.
Dratking's sportsbook, download it and go have some fun this weekend with the NFL.
Cardinals are the Thursday night game, just as a reminder.
And as a reminder, Drafking Sportsbook is the official sports betting partner of the NFL.
If you use our code of PHNX, new customers can bet just $5 on any NFL team to win their game.
And if they do, you win $200 in free bets.
It's that simple.
Draft King's Sportsbook also has one of my favorite things, Mr. Parlay over here, same game parlayes.
I just combined one on tonight's game because I think James Winston is going to light up the Seahawks.
I went heavy on Winston's stats.
and that's something you can do too.
You can combine multiple bets of any sort from the same game for a bigger payout.
The more legs you add, obviously, the more money you win.
Draft Kings is safe, secure, and reliable.
Best of all, you can deposit and withdraw your cash whenever you want.
So again, that code is PHNX, $5 on any NFL team to win.
And if they do, you'll get $200 in free bets.

sportsbook for details.
And Jesse, of course, it's Monday.
We have lots to talk about, but we're going to push it off because we need to answer
our mailbag for Mailbag Monday.
Yes, we do.
Our first question comes from Callie Gregory on Twitter at Callie Ann 319, and she wants to know
how many rookies should we expect to debut for the debacks next year.
Alec Thomas Slade Chaconi, by the way, which we
are learning to pronounce people's names correctly. Jesse corrected me on this. So I'm going
heavy Italian on it, even though I'm not Italian. I'm going to say Chikoni, Slade Chikoni.
Well, well said, well said. You like that. Okay. Well, what do you, what do you think?
How many rookies should we expect to debut from what we've heard from Mike Hazen? It sounds like a lot.
Yeah. No, I think it will be a lot. I think both of those names are Alec Thomas at this point.
I mean, unless something, unless something very unexpected happens,
I think Alec Thomas is pretty much a lock to debut next season.
I mean, obviously, he's done any, you know,
he's learned everything he can learn from the minor leagues at this point.
I mean, he was absolutely tearing it up in Reno,
toward the end of the season.
So I think you'll see Alec Thomas.
Slade Chaconay is maybe a little bit, could go either way.
I think, you know, how he performs here in the fall league is,
is certainly going to play into that,
which he did have a really solid outing the other day,
which was certainly good to see.
Other guys to look for,
I think they won't necessarily be players
that we haven't seen play in the majors before,
but they're players that still have their rookie status.
So like Geraldo Perdomo, you know,
if he comes out and plays next year,
which I'm also quite certain that he will,
he would be, you know, technically a rookie,
as would Seth Beer, you know,
who we got to see for all of two or three games before he had his...
Don't remind me. Don't remind me.
Yeah, I'm not going to, I'm not going to say.
You know, you guys know what happened. Yeah, it was very sad.
But yeah, those are those are sort of the main names that come to mind for me.
Same story, I guess, with Louise Frius, another guy who certainly still would maintain his rookie status going into next year.
But I mean, I think the list kind of goes on, Callie.
I mean, if you, if you were to pull up, you know, the Diamondbacks top prospects on pretty much any website,
I think there's a good chance that a big chunk of those guys pretty much.
anyone, you know, double A, AAA, a lot of their minor league pitchers who are more highly touted are at the upper levels of the minor leagues at this point.
And so pretty much all of them have a have a pretty decent shot at making the major league roster at some point next season.
So guys like Bryce Jarvis.
And the list, the list goes on.
Slate Chaconay, as we talked about before, Blake Walston is another name that is certainly possible.
So next year it's going to be fun.
It's going to be the first year in a long time, Derek,
where going into the year,
there's like a lot of guys from the minor league system
that we're excited to see play.
It's not just, you know,
Dalton Varsho might come up this year.
It's like there's a pretty long list of them.
And we'll see how things turn out and turn.
I don't think every one of those guys I mentioned is necessarily going to make it.
But there's going to be a good handful.
And the Diamondbacks have made it clear.
they're committed in 2022 to giving those guys ample opportunity to show what they can do.
I think what we'll see is an influx of young pitchers.
I think we'll see Ryan Nelson, Corbin Martin.
I think obviously we'll see Louise Free us back.
And I think another name I've seen thrown around is Tommy Henry.
So, I mean, they're all.
Yeah, they're all pitchers.
They're all at like, I think the AA level or higher.
And I think they'll all, we'll see them all next season.
I know for a fact that this team isn't going to spend.
Their payroll this year was $89 million.
You compare that to the Dodgers.
The Dodgers almost spent literally $200 million more than the Diamondbacks.
And that's not going to change, right?
So the Diamondbacks aren't going to start throwing money around next season.
I think we'll see them add a lot of these names.
And I think they'll continue to try to, instead of trading away prospects and trying to
move up quickly by acquiring players from other teams, either through free agency or trades,
I think we'll see a lot of young guys. The main thing I think we'll see next year is,
is outfielders and pitchers, you know, I don't think that they're going to come back
with Cole Calhoun, and I think they still have a hole to fill in center field. I don't see.
They have, they have a lot of, a lot of, I mean, I was doing this yesterday. They have a lot of needs.
Yeah, yeah, no, they do.
I did a little fun exercise yesterday where I was going through their current active roster
and trying to, you know, trying to write down the names of all of the players that we know will be back.
Like we know, you know, Madison Bumgarner is going to be in the opening day rotation.
You know, some of these things that we can really count on.
I only count about 16, maybe 17 guys in that category, which means the Diamondbacks will enter the season
as of right now with about nine or ten players, possibly more if some of these guys I'm expecting
to play get hurt or something else goes wrong. So they have a lot of holes to fill. And, you know,
like you said, they're not going to spend a whole lot in free agency. I think we all know that
at this point. We all accept that. They're probably going to sign a few guys for sure. But a lot of,
a lot of those extra spots are going to be open come spring training. And I think that's going to make
spring training pretty fun to watch because there's going to be a lot of open competition,
a lot of these younger prospects that we're getting excited about will have an opportunity to
earn a spot potentially right out of spring. And that just makes things more fun. You know, going into the
season when, you know, competition really does bring success in a lot of ways. It really brings the best
out of players. And I think we'll see that come February and March. I completely agree. And it's
going to be exciting time. I'm going to get out to the Arizona Fall League a little bit more,
see some more of these young guys, guys that probably won't be up next season. But again,
just nice to see them considering how little we do get to see the minor league prospects.
Just nice to see them up close performing and seeing what they can do. I've been impressed so far
with a couple of guys that I've seen out there so far. So it's been a nice experience. I definitely
encourage everybody to go out to Arizona Fall League and check it.
Yes, do it.
If you live here, if you live here, what are you doing with your life if you're not out there?
Right.
I know probably working, but hey, you can call in sick one day.
All right.
So our next question comes from Kyle Collins at Kyle Collins 5.
And he asked, considering his time and AZ might be running short, where does David Peralta rank among the best debacks ever?
Or does he even make the list for y'all, which I love a good y'all.
but what do you think?
I know you just recently wrote your piece on the website about David Peralta and the
possibility of him not coming back.
So where do you rank him among the best D-BACs ever?
Oh, man.
Yeah, that's a tough one.
David Peralta is not by any means, you know, he's not like a star level talent in this
league.
David Peralta has never made an all-star game.
He has won a Silver Sleger Award in 2018.
and you could argue there's a couple of seasons where he probably could.
He probably could have made an all-star team if he'd maybe started the year a little bit better than he did.
If we look at wins above replacement numbers, for what that's worth, David Peralta ranked sixth,
according to baseball reference in position player wins above replacement, trailing some names you'd expect to see,
Paul Goldschmidt, Luis Gonzalez, A.J. Pollock, Steve Finley, and Catell, and I think that's
probably about where, about where I would slot David Peralta. He's right above Chris Young. He's
right above Justin Upton. Justin Upton might have been a little bit better in his prime than David
Paralta, but David Peralta has certainly lasted longer, at least with the Diamondbacks.
Justin Upton is still in, you know, still in the league. It's been around for a long time now.
But yeah, I mean, I don't think it's, I don't think it's impossible that you could put David Peralta
in the top 10 of position players that have played for the Diamondbacks.
When you factor in pitchers, I don't think he's top 10.
You're probably looking more.
Diamondbacks have had some good pitchers over the years, obviously.
So you're probably looking more top 25 at that point once you factor in those guys.
But yeah, I don't know.
I mean, I think he's probably somewhere in the top 10, Derek.
Well, where do you have him?
I probably, you see, this is where it changed.
To me, it's between being a fan favorite, being that face of the team.
I've talked about him being.
right before and actually being a great player now for me i think yeah i probably would rank him
in the top 10 just because he was such a bigger than life person for this team's a personality
his story was incredible you know just converting from a pitcher over to this you know i i think at
times all-star caliber uh you know outfielder right yeah maybe not maybe not consistently
and of course you have the entire, you know, chase field, outfield situation, right?
But man, I'll tell you, I can't say enough about what, you know, he has been for this team at times,
what he's tried to be.
You know, I think baseball players and athletes in general kind of shy away from the fame side of things, right?
Yeah, which a lot of people don't like because they think.
think that baseball players need more of a brand.
You know, I mean, they need to put those out there more, right.
Baseball and athletes in general, I mean, you know, just in general,
athletes, I think, are pretty against a lot of the stuff that they have to do
to market themselves and, you know, make additional, you know, money.
I think people understand.
Some of them are against making additional.
I think many of them are very in favor of making.
No, no, no, no.
I meant, I meant the additional thing.
you're right. I didn't I didn't word that right. I meant to the things they have to do in order to make additional money.
All the sponsorships. All the sponsorship deals and Mike Trout doesn't want to be in any commercials, right?
I used to think I used to think how funny it would have been to have an ad campaign with Paul Goldschmidt in it being the reluctant like God.
Nobody wants Paul Goldsmith for their ads because he doesn't, his heart wouldn't be in it. Right.
That's just not who he is.
Exactly. And there's a lot of guys that do it just because there's a lot of young guys that they're excited to be famous, right? When you come out of school, especially baseball players, because you're so really not famous, not compared to like college football players or college basketball players that tend to be famous even in college, right? College baseball players or even young baseball players, yeah, they're known by their community and people that play against them and people that go to their schools, right? But they don't have that same level of fame sometimes. So I understand.
how you'd be excited about it a little bit when you become an athlete and then just reluctant
to be that, you know, going forward once you realize all of the pitfalls and stuff that come with it.
David Peralta has never shied away from the spotlight. He's never not wanted to be that guy, right?
And I think that is one thing that made him very, he was, it made him endearing the fans.
It's one of the reasons why people love him. I will say that at times, his,
performance at this point, you know, is, is lacking, especially just as a defender out in the
outfield. You know, I've seen them just completely botched too many balls that look like they were
catchable, you know. He's like a pretty decent outfielder overall, but you're right that like the
eye test with David Peralta doesn't like he does, there are certain plays, especially this past
season where it's like, oh gosh, that was that was not pretty. Yeah. I think though, really what it
comes down to is a lot of Diamondbacks players are pretty forgettable. And I don't think David
Peralta is one of them. I just don't think that when I, when I think back after he is no longer
either part of this team or no longer playing this sport, I don't know if I'll think back and think,
wow, David Peralta was one of the best debacks ever. Right. Right. Right. So I mean, that's where I kind of
go back and forth about ranking him in the top 10. And at the end of the day, I just think I think of too many guys.
would think of first, you know, rather than him.
Who are, who are some of those guys?
Just give me a few names.
Like who pops up to you?
There's, for me, it's the obvious, it's the usual suspects.
Randy Johnson, Louise Gonzalez, you know, Kurt Schilling, Paul Goldschman, right?
Then I think outside of those guys, you just start hitting, you know, guys that were stars or guys that stood out from time to time.
Justin Upton is a name that comes to mind.
I think it's hard.
we have to like make some sort of a distinction between like best diamondbacks of all time as in like like best players who played for the diamond backs or like sure like best like best during their stint here because like jd martina should be you know near the top of this list absolutely like there's a lot of i'm done was a diamond back richie sex and like a lot of guys were diamond backs who are really good but if we're just talking about players who like played a good portion of their career here um you know
like Randy Johnson clearly hit that threshold.
And Luis Gonzalez was here long enough and gold shman.
Right.
Goldschmidt.
That's maybe a little bit closer.
Like I could see him being top 10 on the position player side there.
But I'm with you.
Like you said.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like you said, once you throw pitchers in there, it makes it hard to see him in the top 10 or necessarily think about him in the top 10.
But Jesse, I want to make sure that when people think of you, they put you in their top
10, right? And the easiest way to do that is make sure you are looking groomed and looking slick
with manscape and their entire suite of products, Jesse. And I'm not, that's a great quality
advice right there, Derek. Hey, I'm just trying, I'm just trying to make sure everybody understands,
you know, how people think of you. And, you know, you might not think people remember you for,
you know, how, how, how neat and clean your body hair was. But let me tell you, they will.
especially this Halloween season, Jesse.
It's the time to end the days of shaving your balls
and having them end up look like a horror movie.
Sorry, I have to say that one because it's ridiculous,
but the folks at Manscape do have the perfect package for your package
to get this done this Halloween.
And you can get it over at Manscape.com,
not the Manscape.com.

And again, for betting $5 on any NFL team to win,
you will get $200 in free bets should that team actually come through for you and win.
And Jesse, I'm staying.
away from the Cardinals this week.
Really?
It's just, I mean, it's getting to the point.
The Cardinals are 7 and 0.
They're undefeated.
It does feel, yeah, it feels like it's time, right?
Here's, it's going to be a difficult game.
It's going to be against the Green Bay Packers.
It's Thursday night on a short week.
At least the Cardinals were at home and are at home.
So I still believe in them.
I swore to myself, I would stop doubting them after the Browns game.
And here I am, two lousy weeks later doubting them.
But you don't doubt your team when you're deciding on who to bet your $5 on,
you go in with your heart, bet.
Well, don't.
Don't.
You know what?
You know what I'm saying.
Betting with your heart can, yeah.
That's never a good idea.
That's never a good idea.
We have a little contest that we need to fulfill our end of the obligation on, Mr.
Friedman.
Yes, yes, we do.
We put a tweet out there just letting everybody know how much we appreciate the love and
support that we have received and we truly mean it uh we know that this was a hard season to be an
amazon a diamond backs fan and we also acknowledge that we're launching a diamond backs media entity at
possibly the worst point in their franchise history oh just the worst time in history historically the
we are we are owning it but we appreciate that you're here anyway we appreciate it and and you know
what we love is that people are happy we're here you know i can't say enough about how much you
guys have shown us love and told us that you are excited that the that this debacks podcast exists.
I know as somebody who always likes to hear updates and get news on the debacks that this isn't
something that we have. And that's what we're trying to bring you is something new. So again,
we can't thank you enough for all of the genuinely great comments we've received. And we are thrilled
that everybody's enjoying the show this much.
So with that being said,
it is time now for me to draw a winner.
And I'm not leaving it up to me.
I'm leaving it up to, of course,
the Internet and the wheel of names.
So I'm going to click on the old high-definition camera here for a second, Jesse.
I'm going to take video as we begin this contest.
I'm going to go ahead and shuffle our names up.
We had 37 qualifying entries.
and it is time, Jesse, for us to pick a name.
I am going to click here to spin and here we go.
Your winner of the free shirt.
Wow, so many dramatic pauses.
Steven.
Spit it out already, Derek.
Yeah.
All right.
So I have to go back to find out who Stephen is.
But Stephen, you are our winner.
Congratulations.
Yes.
We will be contacting you via Twitter.
and we will be getting your information so that we can send you out the shirt of your choosing.
Again, no obligation to pick the PHMX D-BAC shirt.
However, if you don't, we're going to judge you.
Yeah, you might be dead to us.
So again, we thank everybody for taking part.
And again, we hope to do this more in the future.
Yeah.
We are excited about the shirts that are coming.
We need some more D-BAC shirts on there.
So me and Jesse are going to get cracking on that.
And of course, you can drop us a line and let us know any ideas you might have for a deback shirt.
Maybe you can help us bring something to life.

Jesse, it's another fine night.
It's a night without baseball, so it's not that great.
But the World Series starts tomorrow,
and I look forward to watching it with you, sir.
Yes, yes.
Thank you guys again so much for joining us on behalf of Jesse and myself.
We just want to remind you, kids, baseball is fun,
but it's so much more fun when you bet on it.
