Why do people keep asking me what's wrong? Obviously, nothing is wrong. The Arizona Diamondbacks have not been eliminated. There's no E next to their name. I didn't hear no damn bell. So on today's show, we're going to talk about how unlikely it might be that they could still reach the playoffs. Don't you go anywhere?

So I'm going to try to keep it chill. That's the reason why I'm thrilled to have my Damon dog back so that he can get fired up and do some screaming today about this team and what has happened the last two days. Ski to you, happy Thursday, and a lot of people had accusations about your whereabouts yesterday after the series loss. Yeah, I mean, some, you know, I'm not going to be here to confirm nor deny the reports that I was scheduled to be on the post-game show and that I, in fact, did a walkout with the Diamondbacks. As the Diamondbacks have done a scheduled walkout for the season, it feels like I have thus also decided I will be walking out from doing these post-game shows. I get it. I totally get it. I'm feeling a little of that myself, but of course, believe it or not, they still aren't dead. And we are going

There's no other way to say that. They have not won a series against the Marlins at home since May of 2022. It sounds like that's not that long ago, but that is four and a half years since the last time they beat the Marlins at home.

That's not an AL team that we, hardly ever see. That is the National League Miami Marlins, who we see quite often. And it's unbelievable that they once again lost another game four to three and that they lose that series three games to two. But the big thing here is yesterday, I mean, our thumbnail was thank you fans. We're not even going to pretend like it's it wasn't over after yesterday's game. but believe it or not, folks. And as Rex likes to point out, the two of you watching, appreciate both of you, though.

Well, one of you, the other one I loathe. The other one I loathe. I'll leave it up to you guys to decide, but I think we can figure out which way that goes. Hi, Debra, I love you. Anyway, back to the playoff odds. It seems like it's over, but like we said, there is no E next to the Diamondback's name,

and their entire situation has changed dramatically after losing this series to Miami. as of Thursday morning here they sit at 80 and 73 three and a half games behind the Padres for the final National League wildcard spot with nine games remaining the Padres are 83 and 69 and have won nine of their last 10 games and they make me sick they do this to us all the time and they did it to us again this year this is the part about the final stretch that's not so great is that the Diamondbacks no longer control their own destiny not to say that they really did but with the amount of games that the Padres have won't one and, you know, the groove that they are in currently, it's hard to imagine that they're going to suddenly not be winning games. But that's what we need to happen. That's what we need to happen. And if that can happen, then the Diamondbacks do to a certain extent control their destiny, considering that they play the Padres in that final series of the season. It's the one series

that we have circled on the calendar now for months. It's probably a series of, that we've talked about since the beginning of the year when the schedule dropped. And we were like, I can't believe we're playing the Padres again in the final series of the year. It's like three seasons in a row, all three of these seasons that have gone bad. We've ended the season against the Padres. But the Diamondbacks obviously can't simply win games just to get in. They need some help. They need some losses.

They need those losses from all three of those teams ahead of them in the wild card race. And that would be great to see. It would be great to see those teams go through what we've been going through currently. But if the Diamondback somehow miraculously win every single one of their remaining nine games, they would finish 89 and 73. That can be the best record at this point that the Diamondbacks can obtain. They cannot hit 90 wins. And they would need the Padres to go five and five or worse in its final 10 games to finish below Arizona.

And obviously three of those games would be three wins against the Padres. That seems unlikely considering that the Diamondbacks only have four sweeps. this year the entire year and now we're asking them to sweep the final three series of the year against the Yankees the Rockies and and the Padres Daman's making noises over there that I can't even comprehend over I'm emotional just the thought of that just the thought of that has a I'm huffing and puffing over there again but obviously the way the record changes if we go 8 and 1. We finish 88 and 73. Padres have to go 4 and 6 or worse. So the Diamondbacks finish 7 and 2, they would need Padres to finish 3 and 7 or worse. And if they finish 6 and 3,

they would need the Padres to go 2 and 8 in their final 10 games, which this is a team right now that's just won 9 of their last 10. Is that likely? Probably not. However, sweeping that final series against the Padres, if that is at all possible, would aid that quite a bit. But the Padres series is essentially the season. What happens between now and then determines how relevant that series is. The Diamondbacks need to be within shouting distance of that team. And more importantly, I mean, a series sweep would, even if the Diamondbacks end up tying the Padres, I believe the Diamondbacks at that point would be in based on them winning the season series against the Padres.

And finishing with those three games is enormous. That's the reason why it's so important. We cannot sit here and think that the Diamondbacks at all in any way are going to catch the Cubs or the Phillies. That could happen. It's not out of the realm of possibility, but that's even less likely than catching the Padres. And even winning two out of three of that series against the Padres might end up being enough. But that, you know, that would require the Padres to, that would require the Padres to lose a lot of games between now, now and then. And this is absolutely a do or die situation. Three

games here at Chase Field, three games in Colorado, three games in San Diego. I don't want to say this isn't elite competition, but it is. The Yankees have the best pitching staff in all of baseball currently. And we have to go up against one of the best pitchers in all the baseball in their staff. Plus, again, the Rockies are the Rockies. Playing them in Colorado is always a real wildcard situation. But there's no margin for error. And that's the problem. This team hasn't been playing their best baseball or flawless baseball all season long.

They've had a couple of games where they played flawless baseball, but a handful. Definitely not enough for you to look back over a stretch and say, we need to get back to that point in May or that point in July. There was that stretch from July 9th on where they were very good for the rest of that month. A month where, to be honest, the schedule was hard enough that it should have probably killed their season right then and there. And because of how good they were in July, that's why we are talking about them still playing relevant baseball right now. And at the very least, that's what they've given us. But again, I understand the feeling that fans have about that not being enough any longer. you know that's something that we want doing a show about this team but coming so close once again

to the postseason and not making it is crushing when it comes to you know it happening three three seasons consecutively yeah yeah it's been a really really tough stretch to take Derek and i i think i think people are understandably kind of fed up with missing the playoffs by a game and especially when you look at like the investment that this team has has put forward If you're Ken Kendrick, right? Like this is a, you've spent more money over the last, you know, three seasons since the World Series than you ever have. And your investment just doesn't, it's not yielding the results that it should be.

Yeah, 100%. And I mean, it's, it does become, like I said the other day, kind of the definition of insanity doing the same thing and expecting different results. they've been up against it and obviously baseball as a sport is going to change forever this offseason this CBA negotiation will forever change how the financial you know pyramid here which doesn't always feel that doesn't feel a great word to use that feels like this is a scheme you know but anyway it is kind of a scheme um or a scam if you will but I will say that you know, the financial structure of Major League Baseball is going to change one way or another

with the CBA negotiation. So who knows how the spending works because based on this floor and ceiling that the owners have proposed, it almost puts the Diamondbacks below the floor. They're like right there at the bottom. They would, you know, almost need to increase spending. And that's a good thing. That would allow us to do so without having to enter those, you know, tax brackets and such that the Diamondbacks right now, the luxury tax brackets that they've been trying to avoid. That would actually allow this team to spend more. And that would probably allow this team to be far more competitive. So the future is very unknown right now, especially for this franchise.

But that's why it makes the here and now so much more important. This is it for this era of the Arizona Diamondbacks. They're not going to burn everything down to the ground and they're not going to just, you know, start over. Their core is still strong and there's still a lot of good pieces to build around. But with Lovolo's contract expiring, there's a good chance he won't be brought back. And I couldn't really tell you about the future for Mike Hazen. I will stick up for Hazen, though, and say this. I think you all have been kind of terrible to this man,

considering what he has been strapped with as far as the financial restraints of the organization and what he has been able to do as a GM to make this team as competitive as it's been in his time as our general manager, considering the broken-ass team that he was handed when he started here as a general manager, not to mention that he has been through some of the toughest things in life that any person could go through while being the general manager of this team. And he still somehow gave this organization his all in trying to to make this team a winner. So I think, you know, I understand the way people feel, but especially about Tori, I get it.

It's been 10 years and, you know, it's not been the most successful 10 years, but a lot of people value Tori for what he has been able to do as a manager. I understand the flak he gets, but. I mean, I don't think that I would argue that, or anyone would really argue that Mike Hazen hasn't been a massive upgrade on Dave Stewart in the previous regime. But how long does that get to be used as a, as like a reason why, you know,

you're not being successful at your own job. It's been a decade. I mean, it's not like, again, it's not entirely his fault. I mean, injuries,

he's been running the show for a decade. I, going out and getting Corvin Burns was a pretty damn good move, considering how reliable and durable he's been. And then he has the biggest injury of his entire career while, while here. Jordan Montgomery was the best available free agent pitcher on the market

and the Diamondbacks went out and signed him. And I don't think, yeah, and I don't think that I actually think that that was probably if I'm reading between the lines, I think Ken Kendrick probably pushed for Jordan Montgomery more than Mike Hazen did. Sure. If Mike Hazen was the one that was the primary pusher of that,

then that's one of the worst moves of his entire career. He doesn't get to wear that as a badge of honor. He paid Jordan Montgomery $20 million a year to be the worst pitcher in baseball. for the Diamondbacks. That's bad GMing just objectively. I mean, yeah, but again, when you're looking at the track record of the guys they acquired and what they were doing and what they were, yeah. I mean, it sucks that they didn't perform.

I don't know the reason why it didn't work out for them here. It's just kind of like Corbyn Burns. I mean, it sucks that he got injured. There's not much you can do about that. That's not something you can blame Mike Hazen for. I mean, I could blame him for not having a good enough team around Corbin Burns where if Corbyn Burns goes down, then you're not going to be able to make the playoffs. I don't know. They had a lot of guys that suddenly needed Tommy Johnson surgery.

I mean, Derek, I know I've kind of backed you into a corner where you're playing devil's advocate a little bit here, but I think that on the one hand, you can say that Dave Stewart was the worst GM in franchise history. Mike Hazen is levels better than Dave Stewart. Mike Hazen, if he was let go by the Diamondbacks, is probably running another organization in a week because people respect him highly. But that all being said, we can still hold people to the standard of, you know, you need to be good at your job, not you need to be better than the last guy. And being good at Mike Hazen's job, in his case, is getting this team to the postseason,

which he's frankly failed to do in the last couple of years here. I don't understand why he doesn't have to wear that because of things that happened seven, eight, nine years ago. I'm not saying he doesn't have to wear that, but you're really going to blame him for injuries and such, like, and you're not even going to consider the other moves like locking Corbyn Carroll into the contract that they locked him into extending him right before he became a historic player. How did I? When did I say I wasn't going to consider that? But that's what I'm talking about. I just saying like there's a body of work here, right? And I'm not saying that coming a few

games short isn't also on Mike Hazen, right? Falling a few games short, three seasons a row falls on everybody. That's a part of this team. I'm not, I'm not saying that. But what I am am saying is that again there there is a lot of factors here with this situation considering that the team is maxed out on spending that spending was done on players that didn't that weren't even here on the field playing you know a lot of that money right so I mean is that not the GM's fault though for signing those contracts for signing a player that got injured Damon I don't know how about what about Madison bumgarner what we're still paying him is that not my case in small we're not still paying him, but he's long off the books.

I'm pretty sure, well, not long off the books. We certainly were paying him last season. So maybe we stopped between last season and this season, but we had to pay him to go away from the organization. I mean, I don't know. But I will say that the trade deadline moves were bad. There's going to be bad moves in a GM's tenure. What they did this year not addressing the needs, constantly not addressing the needs, was definitely

a mark against Hazen here, overall. Yeah, I mean, I don't see how you could argue otherwise. Again, Derek, I know that I'm kind of putting you in a bad spot here where you're just trying to defend. It's kind of insane that you are, but I've admitted that multiple times already now. So I'm trying to be fair to you in this in this conversation by saying that and by making that very clear. But I don't think it's fair to just like wipe away. Well, Mike Hazen's trying to put together a good team. I'm not wiping that away.

Like that's what's crazy is. I'm not wiping that away. What I'm saying is a. The GM's not at fault for a pitcher getting injured and missing 15 months from Tommy John surgery. I'm not saying that fault for not having the depth in the organization requisite to get past an injury like that. He's in charge of the entire organization's roster top to bottom. Other teams have injuries and they're perfectly fine because they have better teams around them. Again, I'm not disagreeing with that, but they also lost several other guys due to Tommy John surgery as well, including Ryan Nelson, who's one of their best pitchers on the team, right?

I mean, the offense is the problem this year, not the injuries to the pitching staff. That's it. That's absolutely the truth. And he built the offense. That's absolutely the truth. But it's also the same guys that have been here on the field doing the being the team, right? We've talked about that. The missing factor here this year has been Cotel Marte, has been Corbyn, has been Corbyn. We talked about them hitting just the other day, Perdomo's numbers hitting with runners in scoring position, right? Like there are a number of factors here. But the players that were added to this team are. actually the ones that are a big reason why they're winning, right? The Nolan Aronado move. There's a great move right there. Having the Cardinals eat as much of his contract and him hitting 26 home runs here and kind of having a resurgence in his career. What sad is is that those guys were, as you and I have talked about,

they were supposed to supplement these guys. We said, bring in a couple of guys that can help them. Now those guys, James McCann has one of the best batting averages on this team. Nolan Arnato is like leading the team in home runs. And that shouldn't be the case because the guys that should be doing that or Corbyn Carroll, Geraldo, Pardomo, and Cotel Marte. I don't disagree with that. You're right about that.

Also, one thing that you and I were in big favor of was obviously not trading Cotel Marte. And now everything that we've been through after this off season, I don't know if I would still have that same stance, depending on if I heard the packages and if it included Peyton Tolly, I'm saying yes, no matter who else is with it. But, you know, that kind of situation and showed loyalty to a player that, you know, again, they tried their best to kind of downplay that situation, but I'm guessing they were more shopping him around than they made it out to be. And there's probably good reason for that after hearing that this thing that happened this year didn't just happen last year, but also happened the year

before and all of this, you know, stuff. But again, my bigger point here about this is, is that, you know, as far as cleaning house, which most people want to do, I don't know if that's the right move. I don't either. I don't either. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not advocating for that. I'm, I think I'm trying to say more that I think that the answer is probably more in the middle of, you know, whether they deserve the blame versus don't deserve the blame. I think Mike Hazen, as you stated, has maybe had some stuff that have been out of his control, such as Corbyn, Catell, and Jerry all having down years. Something that is not his fault. Everybody's going to invest in those players. Everybody's going to think that those players are good enough to make your offense at least league average or slightly a little bit better.

better than that. But what he can control is signing Carlos Santana to be the team's platoon first basement in the off season and that being the one move there. Bringing back Pavin Smith over and over and over again to this team and giving him meaningful A.Bs when we could have gotten a guy like Gino when he was cut. And instead they're like, we don't want to pay him $3 million. We'd rather run out Pave and Smith at later points with the season on the line. Like that kind of stuff to me, I can blame Mike Hays and four on the,

I think that there's stuff that's out of his control as well. I'm not advocating for getting rid of him. I just think that, like, you know, it's, I wouldn't necessarily say that he's blameless here. I think that there's a lot of stuff that he could have done differently that would have, I completely agree with that. And I never said he was blameless,

but what I said is people that are calling for his job, forget the good that he's done for this team and he's done a lot. But he's done it on a shoe string budget. The floor is a lot higher with Mike Hazen's GM versus what it has been in years past. I think that it's also fair to argue, you know, should we try to strive for a better, a bigger ceiling too, because it feels like now it's time to go to the next step of actually making the playoffs consistently as a franchise.

And is this regime, the regime that's going to get us there is the question a lot of people are asking. I'm not giving an answer either way. I'm just, I'm just merely stating like I think that that's what the true question topic of this entire thing is. Here's what I'll say. First of all, here's what I'll say, Brex's, I'm being too emotional. Ban them.

Ban them from the chat right now. This is how emotional I'm being. Put him in time out. Get him out of here. I don't want to see another Killer Rex comment for the rest of this episode. That's how, there, you, I'm too emotional. There, that's how emotional I'm being Killer Rex. It's very emotional.

Spamming my chat anymore like you do every single time you're here. But also what I will say when it comes to this entire situation is, I would love to see Mike Hazen with whatever the new financial structure is. because again, the Gino thing still makes me wonder, does that $3 million, is that just enough to put them over this stupid luxury tax where now they have to pay all sorts of additional money? I know when it came to their off-season spending that they spent far more than we thought they were going to spend. So they did enter in being very close to that luxury tax.

And again, even something like that might be enough to push them over. So when I say I would like to see at least Mike Hayes in here with whatever the the new CBA brings us, that could put the Diamondbacks from being right there at a threshold where they can't spend anymore to just being at the bottom level of where they need to be due to the new floor. And that could give them a lot of time to perhaps do more, right? I still think that I will agree with Damon. Some of the bad contracts, some of the huge contracts that this team probably shouldn't have even signed, even though it was, it looked good at the time. Adding the best available starting pitcher

on the free agent market is always going to be a big move. It's always going to be tantalizing and for some reason the Diamondbacks have done it and it doesn't work out for them hardly ever. It is pretty wild. It's wild right? Like they go out and they essentially get the best starter

and that's it. I mean and he wasn't the best but even like Erod right was like a big time free agent edition and he was pretty bad for the first couple seasons. Look up Eduardo Rodriguez during that free agency season. Like there were a lot of articles about him

and a lot of teams that were interested in him, right? So you're right. I mean, he had consistent. He was consistent. But it just, yeah, even Erod. Even Erod didn't really work out until this year. And why didn't Erod work out? Because essentially he's been injured this entire time, this entire time.

And he was finally healthy at the end of last year and then into this year. And he was finally able to pitch for this team and be. the pitcher they thought they were getting originally. But even that deal didn't work out for them because of the injuries, right? And a lot of stuff when it comes to, you know, Mike Hayeson's tenure has not worked out. And I do feel like some of it is out of his control. But a lot of it is, and I'll acknowledge this, Damon, a lot of it is, you know, mismanaging or moves that he thought would work out that didn't work out.

More importantly, though, I think, like it's almost like this team at times with the ABS challenge system where they miss an ABS that they should have obviously called and they didn't do it. So then they just a BS another random pitch that was not out of the zone and then they blow a challenge, right? It almost felt like, you know, at times this team couldn't get the player or the position that they were looking to fill. So they just got somebody else and it was the best that they could do. And that best didn't work out. I think immediately of the first base situation that you addressed with Carlos Santana that made me and you not talk. for three weeks straight outside of doing this show.

We almost got that again right now. Yeah, I know. Well, we're going to get, you think I'm going to speak to you after this? Yeah, that's insane. That's crazy to think that.

I'm storming out of this office. But the fact of the matter here is, is that, you know, a lot of things have not gone this team's way. And yeah, I mean, that eventually has to fall on the GM.

It has to fall on the manager. I just don't foresee the team parting ways with my case in. I don't, you know, see them necessarily bringing Tori back. However, these two guys have kind of been connected throughout their entire career. So it's going to be interesting to see what happens when it comes to that decision being made

should the Diamondbacks not make the playoffs. But that's not, let's hope, let's hope, and keep our fingers crossed. That's not the direction that we go. Because what needs to happen this week is the Diamondbacks need to essentially win the series against the Yankees. They need to win every series.

The series against the Yankees where the Yankees are deploying their literal, like playoff rotation. Yeah, why are they doing that to us? Well, I'm sure it's just the line, right? The unluckiness of the draw, essentially, but it sucks that that's how it's going to play out here,

where we're going to have to go in and there's, you know, just no if, if, answer, or buts about it, you're going to have to go win a series against a really, really good pitching staff, probably about as good of a three as you can get in baseball these days. And meanwhile, you just scored one run or two runs against junk and gusto.

Yeah. for the Marlins. Which is classic. I mean, that's always how the season was going to end. Yeah. Yankees need to beat them two to one and you need to sweep the Rockies. And then the Padres need to lose games. If that happens, we have a chance.

I mean, for those of you out there that want to know if we actually do have a chance or if it's a pipe dream, we have a chance. It's also asking a lot and expecting a lot for this team to win that many games over their final stretch. essentially losing two games over their last nine games going seven and two but weirder things have happened baseball is what it is and you never know i'll tell you what here's the one bright spot i can give when it comes to that derrick is if for some if somehow you are able to go on a run here going into the playoffs you're going to be the hottest team in baseball yeah going into the postseason and that's got to make you feel good about your chances once you get there but again, that does nobody any favors if you don't get there.

And it also doesn't mean anything if you don't go on a win streak right now. So yeah, got to get there. We got to get there. Do you believe the D-backs can win seven of their last nine? Me personally? Yes. I thought you were, I thought maybe that was like a more like general. To chat.

Chat. Do you believe the diamond backs can win seven of their last nine? No, I don't. No, I don't. I thought it was very, very possible this entire thing until the Padres went nine and one in their last 10 games before they became the best team the sports ever seen. And I guess we probably should have just assumed that's what was going to happen because that's what's happened to us in the past couple seasons here as well. Their offense was so bad too all season long. It was like worse than baseball type of bad.

You knew that wasn't sustainable. You knew they had to wake up eventually, you know. Yeah. I mean, it's just unfortunate. You know, I hate being the first team out of the playoffs every single year. But yeah, I definitely think that the Padres have just built up too big of a lead at this point where it's going to be really, really difficult for the dying backs to come back. I'll be honest.

I think really the only route to making this happen here, Derek, is we got to clawback that extra half game and then we got to sweep the Padres. I think that that's pretty much the route to. to making the playoffs is you're three and a half back. You got to get within three by the time you play that final series. And if you can get within three, then you unload the clip against the Padres. Everything you got. Every single player you got.

Every ounce of gas that is in the tank. Yeah. Every percent above 100 that you can give 110, 111, Derek. You got to give every single thing that you got there. If you're Pardomo in a situation like that, I want to see you truck the catcher. You know, if the catcher's going to give himself up to you and it's that Padre series, run him over. Level him. Yeah.

Yeah. No mercy. Yeah. I mean, it's time for that. It's time for war. It is time to go to war. And Damon, you know me. I might have a, I might have a Glock, but I have a weapon that's stronger than that.

and it's right here and it never runs out of ammunition and I'm ready for war. Your voice? Yeah, that's the reference I was making to. My stupid mouth is what I was making a reference to. But I will be here to advocate, even for Mike Hazen, even when people are calling me a shill, and I'll be here to still have hope for this team

until there is an E next to their name. Because I just feel like they have been underwhelming all year long and there is no reason why they can't play better. They are so capable of it. but they just, they seem to fold in the biggest moments this year when the spotlight is the brightest. That is when they wilt away.

It feels like they're an emotional team. Like in the same context, Derek, where you're saying that the, with that Padres offense, there's no way they were going to have the 30th ranked OPS in baseball all season long. Yeah. You know,

it's like, can the Diamondbacks truly continue to fold in all of these big circumstances? is where they just go up there and it doesn't look like they even know how to hit when there is runners on base in front of them to a level that we really haven't seen in a long time. Like this whole stretch,

the runners in scoring position has just been brutal. It's been so bad. A couple of weeks here. And it's crazy. You can tell they're getting in their own head about it. And to me, that's just not a team that I think is going to have this miraculous turnaround where all of a sudden everyone's hot and Cattell and Corbin are playing the level

baseball that we've, you know, come to expect out of them the last couple of seasons. That feels unrealistic to me. I know. I know, but you never know, man. And we got to hold out hope. That's all we can do at this point. But we're going to take a quick break. And on the other side of this break, we are going to preview essentially this must win series once again with the New York Yankees that starts on Friday night.

Chase Field is going to be rocking. This place is going to be packed. It's going to be electric. Not to mention the fact that they are going to be having the 25th anniversary celebration of your Arizona Diamondbacks winning the World Series against these very same New York Yankees.

Everybody except Matt Williams is going to be in the house because apparently Matt Williams, Matt Williams is coaching a team that is in the playoffs, and he refuses to miss time. Oh, I'm Matt Williams, and I'm better than you guys. Yeah, that's crazy, it's crazy, it's a crazy, it's a crazy stance. Oh, you losers can't make the playoffs? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Come on, dude. You know, I'm over here hanging out, doing, uh, doing my coaching career right now is what I'm doing.

So, uh, anyway, good, good, good for Matt Williams to having things going on in his life. But anyway, they, Diamondbacks, of course, have to win this series against the Yankees. This is huge. Let's take a look here at the Yankees at a glance this season

compared to the Diamondbacks. You have the Diamondbacks with an 80 and 73 record. The Yankees are 88 and 64. They don't really have a ton to play for. They're not going to catch the rays, I believe, who have clinched the division, which is crazy to say. But I think they still could.

They're 88 and 64, so I don't know if it's, completely out of the realm of possibility. We would much rather have them not have anything truly to play for. They are four and a half games back. So they could still catch the raise, though. That's unlikely. As I sit here and say,

the Diamondbacks catching the Padres, a three and a half back is likely, or they have a chance. But they do have a chance. So stop bugging me. The Yankees have a 721 OPS, which is tied for 12th best in baseball. The Diamondbacks OPS, believe it or not,

actually went up a little bit. They're now at 713, which is 20th. They were 21st last time we ranked this. So, hey, even though they can't really score, they're doing better than they were, which is crazy to say. Damon, this ERA for the Yankees, crazy, crazy ERA numbers. Yeah, it is. 3.19 for the team, which is first in all baseball. Can you imagine, dude?

No, I can't imagine. Sorry. It would happen on a year where we had the 20th best OPS, I'm sure. Yeah, yeah. 100%. We wouldn't have to win the 12th best. No, God, no. 3.26 starting ERA for the Yankees is the best in baseball,

and their 1, 3.09 bullpen ERA, also the best in baseball. Oh, my God. We're cooked. We're so cooked. Out above average, though. Maybe they'll make some mistakes there. They have one, which is tied for 16th. The Diamondbacks still have 43, which is second most in baseball.

And as we pointed out here, the D-backs won the 2025 series. two games to one. So it could happen, right? Sorry, that cough in the back sounded. I mean, you're just getting yourself sick just looking at this. Oh, God. I get it. I mean, you might need to go two and one here.

Yeah, I mean, that's really the most you can hope for. Oh, it's certainly the most you could hope for. There's no chance we're getting a sweep in this series. Nor are we beating Cam Schittler, Schlittler. I didn't mess that up on, promise. I just words are hard sometimes. So are names. You guys know that.

We're going to turn him into Kim, Schittler. That's what would be great. Sub 2, ERA. Oh, my God. That's going to be something. That's going to be something. Let's take a look here at the probable pitchers for this series. I mean, it's your three that you want, too.

To be fair. You know, I know that we're talking about that. Now, you're right. It being, it being a disaster. because of the Yankees in their playoff three that you have here, but it's certainly our best three pitchers. I guess you're saying there's a chance.

Like if you're talking about the playoff rotation, this is it, right? Correct. And it's unfortunate that Corbyn Burns got, you know, had the bad adding that he had there the last time out against the Marlins. However, you know,

you feel like that's not what Corbyn Burns is going to be. that's just Corbyn Burns still coming back and getting, you know, acclimated back to baseball. Hopefully. That's the hope. Nothing is guaranteed, obviously. You don't know these guys are ever going to be, you know, themselves returning from a surgery like that.

But I believe in him. And I think that, you know, like Damon said, if there was three guys you wanted in this series, this is it. And that's no offense to Michael Soroka. He's been very good lately too. But, Garrett, Eduardo Rodriguez matches up with Garrett Cole, at Erod, still impressive, 15 and 6, 2.62 ERA,

Garrett Cole, 8 and 9 with a 3.67 ERA. Then in game two, you got the youngsters going at it, Brandon Fott, and his 3.77 ERA and 7 and 3 record going up against Cam Schlittler. There we go. 14 and 6, 1.95 ERA for Cam. And he's just been an incredible, incredible acquisition. Not even acquisition, right?

He was a minor leaguer for them, I believe. if I'm not mistaken and like just what what a great major league pitcher he has become and then in the finale we got corbin burns going up against will warren who is 10 and six with a 3.89 er a this year for the new york yankees and i don't love it i don't love it but it's hard too again it's just there it's their it's their pitchers it's having cam schlittler in there it's having garret cole in there and it's knowing the gravity of these games I, I, it's, and it's, it's going to be crazy, right? Because watch, watch the offense suddenly wake up. That might be more aggravating to me than if they don't. If they don't, I'm like, yeah, okay. But oh, oh, oh, oh, you put up seven runs against Cam Schlittler and you can't even score more than one against the Marlins bullpen, ah, you know, that kind of thing.

But let's hope, let's hope that's what happens. Let's hope that's the kind of anger that they instill in me. We also have, oh, and yes, 2BMC is pointing out Root Beer, who has been Root Beer Floats some, floats, floats, floats on me? I don't know. But Root Beer Float, oh, root beer floats on me. Yes, okay, you owe me a root beer float. He has been a source of positivity.

And he has always felt, or they, I should say, have always felt like this team is still alive. and I appreciate that. We need a little bit more of that. It's easy to be pessimistic. I get it. You got to put your heart on the line in order to have hope and believe,

but let's do that. Let's all not be that guy that we banned from the chat today. Damon, let's take a look at the husband and wife law team injury report because guess what, folks, there is nobody on the aisle that isn't on the 60 day IL.

Let's go husband and wife law team. I mean, ever since we, started doing this, thanks to the good folks at the husband and wife law team, this injury report has shrunk drastically, Damon. This is the first time that the Diamondbacks are at what you could consider to be 100%. With Ryan Nelson returning to the roster this week, they are officially at 100% as far as players that they will be getting back this season. Meanwhile, you see here on screen, the four guys that are on the 60 day IL, Ryan Thompson with a strained lower back. He was moved to the 60-day I.L. on August 5th, his expected return is next year.

AJ Puck, he was put on the 60-day IL back in March with a left shoulder capsule sprain, and he is most likely not going to be a member of the Diamondbacks when he returns from injury. That would be the expectation, I imagine. Christian Mena, however, still will be. he's still experiencing the injury from his right terrace major strain and then Andrew Saul Frank who had in season ending shoulder surgery at the beginning of the year he is on the 60 day aisle however though that's it those are the guys that we're not coming back and there were no plans to come back except a j puck perhaps he was supposed to come back

and you all know how that went but this is it this is the first time we've actually been free and clear as far as the 10 day iL and 60 day ill guys that were expected to come back in 2026. So I guess I have to pose a question, Damon. Doesn't that make it even more frustrating? Doesn't it make it even more frustrating that they're losing games like they lost to the Marlins and losing series like they lost to the Marlins? Considering we have been waiting all season for this, all season, we have been waiting for this team to be back to 100%. And yeah, I guess you could argue that these pitchers that return from significant layoffs still probably aren't at 100%. But, I mean, this is the roster that maybe we didn't expect to have at this point, but this is the roster we thought that when we got to this point, we would be playing our best baseball.

And instead, that's very much not the case, very much not the case. I think it was always, the plan was always, you know, when this roster was going to be fully healthy, ready to go and back. from injury that you know you were hopefully in a playoff position already or or very close to one it almost worked out but this final stretch here has has obviously kicked you out of of that and it sucks because it's more so to do with the Padres not being able to lose than the diamondbacks not being able to win that's fair I mean that's fair they did reach just a season high 10 games over 500 not that long ago and they were there but I think it's now it's the it's the fact that, and again, this is more of the conversation we had about if you can't win a series

against the Marlins when essentially your season is on the line, how do you expect to go into the playoffs and win a series there? I know anything can happen, but it's hard to believe that this team and the way they're constructed is going to go into the playoffs and make some loud noise like they did in 2023. But I also did not believe it was going to happen then. As Damon could attest to, I had multiple vacations planned for the month of October. not the first week, just the month. And let's just say, I've been looking into some flights to Cancun for October 5th through the 8th is all I'm saying. But let's hope that I don't book those plans and don't get to.

Let's hope that they keep me very busy well into the month of October because that would be great. We would love that around here. We're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break. We are going to do, you know, the thing that. we do on Thursdays around here. We might be running out of throwback Thursday material very fast, but for the time being, we still got some big moments that happened on this day or on this week in Arizona Diamondbacks history.

Well, Damon, let's brighten up these colors a little bit. I'm kind of sick of talking about this current team. and I would like to talk more about the success of past Dinaback's team on another edition of Throwback Thursday. Ah, that feels better. That just, that feels right when that comes up. And what feels right is talking about this, considering what's happening at Chase Field this weekend.

There's going to be all sorts of wonderful festivities. All the boys are going to be back. I cannot wait to see many of the guys that we don't get to see often. And Saturday is going to be a very, very special night at the ballpark. Looking forward to that. They are giving away those throwback jerseys, which are electric. And everybody should come on out, help drown out those Yankees fans because you know those people from New York are going to crawl out of whatever holes they've been living in

to come to this game at Chase Field. But during this week in Diamondbacks history, we've had some significant things that have happened in the history of this team, including back in September 15, 2002, Kurt Schilling, who will be present at Chase Field this weekend, struck out eight brewers to join Randy Johnson as the only teammates in MLB history to record 300 plus strikeouts in the same season. I just still can't believe how special having those two guys on this team truly was and how much at the time all we did was complain about the offense.

I mean, I can imagine. You guys, you idiots, I hate this team. nothing's changed nothing's changed uh september 18th 2002 gregg colbrin became the second player in franchise history to hit for the cycle that's a trivia answer that most of you probably aren't going to remember so i'm just going to repeat that one more time gregg colbrin was the second player in franchise history to hit for the cycle and he did it on september 18th in 2002 uh then on september 14th 2003 randy johnson tossed a one hitter against the Rockies. So he tosses a one hitter complete game against the Colorado Rockies on September 14th.

Five days later on September 19, 2003, Randy Johnson hit his first career home run. And boy, was it a moment. I wish we could show that highlight right now on this show. But we can't. but it was a moment. And let's just say the reaction from his teammates, it was against the Milwaukee Brewers. He did it at age 40.

Oh, I mean, talk about a guy that did it for the unks. A guy that proved that even at 40, we are not washed. And it was off of Doug Davis. It was a fastball to left field that landed in the brewer's bullpen, fittingly enough. and the Diamondbacks won that game by a score 4 to nothing. In fact, that was his only home run of his career. September 15, 2004, Randy Johnson also became the all-time left-handed

strikeout leader with a seventh inning strikeout of Vinnie Castilla, passing Steve Carlton and moving into third place on the all-time list with a three-to-two win over the Rockies. In September 13, 2010, the Diamondbacks and Reds back-to-back home runs in the second inning where the first back-backed back. to back homers in the same inning since April of 2006. So nearly four years since two teams facing off against each other had back-to-back home runs in back-to-back innings against each other or in the same inning in the same inning.

And then those were, that was Miguel Montero and Ryan Church, who did it for the debacks. And then Jay Bruce and Drew Stubbs who did it for the Reds in that game. September 19, 2011, won Ian Kennedy, who was really, really good at. at a time during this time for this team. He became the National League's first 20-game winner after a one-to-nothing victory over the Pirates. See, nothing has changed for this offense. A one-to-nothing victory.

He allowed one hit and a career-high, 12 strikeouts to win that game. He's the only pitcher since 1900 to register at least 10 strikeouts and allow one hit or less in his 20th win. The only other one to do it was Warren Spawn, who tossed a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts back in 1960. He was the fourth Diamondback to reach the mark after Randy Johnson, Kurt Schilling, and Brandon Webb all became 20 game winners. Here's here, you know what, I'm going to hold off on that one.

We won't hold off on, but on September 16th, 2020, our boy, Dre Jameson made his major league debut against the San Diego Padres tossing seven. Shutout frames. Can we get that, Drey Jameson back? I need that Drey Jameson back. With Ryan Nelson, they became the third duo in baseball since 1901 to each toss seven scoreless innings in their debuts.

That's how good Drey Jameson and Ryan Nelson were when they got called up in 2022. It was unbelievable. And I don't think we were really expecting that out of either guy. So outstanding. They were outstanding when they came up. and I think they were outstanding for the rest of that season. But the one last fact that happened during this week is kind of hilarious.

And Damon, you're probably laugh at this. On September 19, 2013, D-Banks, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Arizona Diamondbacks, ranked as the number one franchise in Major League Baseball, according to ESPN the magazine's ultimate standings. And I think we know why that magazine doesn't exist anymore because bad information like that. They were ranked Damon as the sixth overall best franchise in all of sport. What year was this again? 2013, September 19th, 2013.

What the hell were they thinking? How things have changed. All right. Well, let's take a quick break. Let's go. All right. Again, seasons wrapping up. We are going to eventually become fall guys once Arizona Fall League arrives. So looking forward to that. But in the meantime, we have what could be one of the final looks of the season at some AAA stats now that the Reno Aces season is wrapping up. Let's take a look at how some of the prospects are doing on Snake Farm this week. We got some end of the season numbers here kind of getting close to the end of the season for Lou James Groover, Mani Pena.

and one guy that we haven't talked about at all, I believe, on the show, Danny Siretti, who is a shortstop, third baseman, and second baseman. He was recently promoted to AAA Reno. He's played 35 games for the Aces, and he has been doing a great job. He has a 934 OPS. He has five home runs. He has 16 RBI. He has a 316 batting average.

And again, he has a guy that plays multiple positions and could fit the mold for, you know, one of those guys that the debacks call up and kind of have backup all of the infielders, considering he can do that very well, it seems like. Lou James Gruber continues to rake in Reno. It would be great to see this translate over to the major leagues. And now that he's had that kind of experience this season and gotten his feet wet, hopefully we can see him continue to get better at that level when he comes back. But there's no doubt that he was an asset at a AAA level.

He has a 389 on base percentage, an 825 OPS. He hit 305 and he had 57 RBIs in 96 games for the AAA Reno Aces. And then Mani Pena, who was called up around the middle of the season or promoted during the middle of the season, he's still doing some great things. He doesn't have the power that he had in Amarillo. He was literally not hitting the cover off the ball for the sod poodles. But he still has a 297 batting average at a AAA level. He has 27 RBIs.

This is in, again, 52 games. He has five home runs and a 746 OPS. All three of these guys are guys that it's very easy to potentially see them, get called up next season, get utilized in the same way that certain guys have been utilized this year. And I think a couple of those guys, including a guy that we will see out at Arizona Fall League, Demetrio Chrysantis, I think those guys will eventually be kind of similar situations to what we saw this year. year. Overall, I know this season might not end the way that we wish it to, right? But let's not forget, due to necessity, we saw so many guys make their debut this year. And a lot of those guys

truly did have themselves a decent major league year. Not only is Ryan Waldschmidt stuck, but, you know, think about Jose Fernandez and what he contributed when he was first called up. We still have the statute plans. I don't know if we'll get those approved, but we still got like an actual architect to, you know, make a blueprint, along with the statue of hashtag the meeting, which that's still happening. We're still going to make that happen, regardless of if they make the playoffs or not.

But Ryan Waldschmidt, Tommy Troy, Lou James Groover, so many guys came up and made their debuts this year, not to mention, you know, the arms in the bullpen as well. I mean, the Diamondbacks have just had to do this based on need. And a lot of these guys have stepped up and, you know, made that transition to a major.

to the major league level well. Gruver still has, you know, I guess some development to go overall. But I think that he's going to get there and I wouldn't be surprised to see him putting up these same numbers that he's putting up for the Reno Aces at a major league level.

He seems to be that good. So hopefully those skills will translate. But we got another game tomorrow. We'll be back tomorrow covering game one of the New York Yankees.
