Starting point is 00:00:10 They're not like us. They're not like us. They not like us. Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX D-Backs podcast right here on PHNX. My name is Derek Montaia. Occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. This is man next to me is your vice mayor and your thunder stick for and only Jesse Freepin. Arizona Diamondbacks win their fifth series of the year, taking the finale against the Cincinnati read by a score of, what was it?
Starting point is 00:00:35 Two to one. Two to one. They take two games of the three games series. and have now taken five out of six against the Reds over the last 10 days. It was fantastic to see the Diamondbacks do the one thing we asked them to do, which was pick on a team while they were down. Tapping to the Diamondbacks so far early this season, so it was great to see them turn around and do it to someone else,
Starting point is 00:00:57 especially a team like the Reds that a lot of people would say is a much better team than what we saw in these six games. Yeah, the Reds are down bad. And the Devaks caught him. at a good time. Of course, the story in the Wednesday game was Brandon Fott, who was outstanding in that game, seven innings, two hits, one run, two walks, nine strikeouts, only 93 pitches. He continues to be one of the more reliable starters in this rotation at a time where debaques, obviously, are missing two really important guys in Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez.
Starting point is 00:01:33 He's really helped add some stability there. And as we're going to discuss today, Derek, Like it feels like Brandon Fott is becoming maybe a little bit more than he was toward the end of last year. I know I know he emerged in the playoffs and we've seen what he can do in some big moments. We've seen some really, really impressive stuff from him at times. But it feels like it's come together a little bit more here over these last few weeks. Well, we've said as much as we wanted to get excited about how Brandon Fought pitched in the postseason and even towards the end of last year during the regular season, we wanted to see it in a more consistent basis. wanted to see it be able to carry over and not just be kind of, I guess, an adjustment that helped his success for a period of time, but didn't necessarily help him as a pitcher, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:20 kind of take that next step to the next level. What we've seen so far this year from Brandon Fott is kind of game after game. And he's human, so he still has his bad outings at times. But game after game where he kind of takes a step up in one way or another. I know that he set a career record for whiffs in a game. not too long ago and then in the finale he I believe tied a career record for outing as far as length going seven in in yesterday's game he was just pound in the zone as he pretty much always does honestly 22 he only had eight whiffs in
Starting point is 00:02:55 the game yesterday but he had 22 called strikes which I don't have in front of me that might be career high for him that's a really that's a lot of called strikes he threw the sweeper more than more than any other pitch that continues to be just an outstanding, an outstanding weapon form. We saw him back off it a little bit in that, in that game against the Orioles. Right. As many lefties as they had in the lineup, it seemed like a bit of a change of attack there. But yeah, after having bizarrely no strikeouts in his last out, he came out and had nine today
Starting point is 00:03:23 and showed why he is one of the more exciting young players on this team, right? It wasn't just Corbyn Carroll and Gabrielle Moreno and the, you know, the next steps that Alec Thomas could take. It was about Brandon Fott coming into this year and what kind of steps he could take. And honestly, out of that young core that the Diamondbacks have, I mean, no one has taken a next step really outside of Brandon Fott. Like Gabrielle Marino struggled a little bit. Corbyn Carroll obviously is still going through it. They're all going through their sophomore slump.
Starting point is 00:03:55 But, Brandon Fought. Alec Thomas and Perdomo have been hurt. But Brandon fought. Yeah, he's, I mean, again, again, like looking at his numbers, you're not going to be blown away. I mean, he still is an ERA over four. But the eye test. is that of a pretty darn good starting pitcher right now.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Well, let's take a look at Brandon Fott's season so far, because like you said, this particular graphic is going to show his body of work, but not really what he has been doing lately, which we will discuss. But Brandon Fott this season, 54 innings pitched. He has a 4.17 ERA, a 1.11 whip. He has a 22.8% strikeout rate, a very good walk rate, 4.5%.
Starting point is 00:04:34 And his FIP is 3.33. But that is for the season. Now, there are some bad outings mixed in there. Yeah. Over his last six starts, though, he's been very, very good, even better than, much better than this. Yeah, he has a 3.13 ERA, a 0.99 whip over his last six starts. He's pitched 37 in a third innings in his last six starts.
Starting point is 00:04:57 And that might be the biggest thing about Brandon fought. Like his ERA for the season is not pretty yet. At this point, it certainly feels like it's going to get better. but he's averaging for the season exactly six innings per start, which is something that not many starting pitchers do at this point, right? You look at where Brandon fought with his 54 innings pitch this season. If you look at starting pitchers who have made nine starts like he has, not 10, there's a couple guys who have 10 appearances.
Starting point is 00:05:26 I believe he ranks 11th in baseball right now innings pitched. He's been one of the more durable starters out there. Heck, I think Brandon fought could lead the Diamondbacks in innings pitched. It's not going to be Merrill Kelly. it's not going to be Jordan Montgomery. It's not going to be Eduardo Rodriguez, right? We know that. It's up to him and Zach Gallen for the most part.
Starting point is 00:05:43 It's pretty much up to him and Zach Gallen. And right now, Zach Gallen is averaging five and a half innings per start. And Brandon Fott is averaging six. Pretty much every time he goes out there, he's pitching deep in the games. I'm not good at math, but I think he's going to eventually catch Zach Gallen and pass it based on that math. I mean, I think as of right now I don't have it in front of me. I believe that Brandon Fought already is ahead of Zach Gallin innings pitched.
Starting point is 00:06:05 Well, and yesterday. You would be safe to say it was his best start of the year so far all the way around. Again, even without having that many swings and misses yesterday, he still goes seven innings, gives up two hits, one earn run. He walked two and struck out nine. And I think that that is an outing we would pray for out of Brandon fought any single day. And I mean, this was a close game. The Diamondbacks were only able to score two runs themselves. Abbott was incredible.
Starting point is 00:06:31 He was equally as incredible on the other side of the mound for the Cincinnati Reds. but the Diamondbacks were able to get one more run against the bullpen, and they're able to take that game. But of course, Fought was a big reason why they won yesterday for him having the, again, probably his best outing of the year. Yeah, and possibly his best outing of his career, question mark. I mean, I guess the, like, game three of the NLCS. I mean, he only went five and two thirds there, but he had nine strikeouts,
Starting point is 00:07:01 and obviously that game was far more. The high leverage is a little more important. than a, you know, random Wednesday afternoon game in May. But if you go by game score, which for people who don't know is just an invention of the great Bill James, where you basically start at 50. And yeah, it's basically just a way of grading how well a starting pitcher pitched, evaluating how good their final line was. So 50 is generally about average.
Starting point is 00:07:29 It ranges from 0 to 100. And Brandon Fott was at a 76 yesterday, which was the highest mark. or the second highest mark of his career. He last season, I'd forgotten about this, he threw seven, one-hit scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres on the road last year. I believe I was actually at that game, but somehow that had slipped my mind.
Starting point is 00:07:50 That was a game score of 77. So this was his second best start in terms of game score. But his best start of the season by game score and also the best start by any Diamondback starting pitcher this season. No one has had a game score that high. So, yeah, it was an outstanding performance. And, and again, the Reds are the Reds. And, you know, they're going through it right now.
Starting point is 00:08:12 They're missing several key offensive pieces. I think we expect that team to get better once they get some of those guys back. But, I mean, just the eye test of it. Like Brandon Fott looks really, really dominant at points in that game. The Reds are very much a team that could get things back on track very easily, right? Like, we're seeing the Rockies, as we've talked about, even joked about. going on a tear and the Rockies right now are playing some really good baseball. The Reds are not, right?
Starting point is 00:08:41 So the Reds, this is a team that could turn things around. The Diamondbacks get all of their games out of the way against the Reds, you know, during this period of time while they're in this slump. And it worked out well for them because they were able to essentially convert and take advantage of the fact that the Reds aren't playing good baseball right now. But let's take a look at the Count presented by our friends at Desert Financial Credit Union. This is for the series. the Reds actually outscored the Diamondbacks 12 runs to 10.
Starting point is 00:09:09 They out hit the Diamondbacks 27 to 23. Runners in scoring position, more opportunities and better conversion rate there for the Reds. They were 9 for 25. Diamondbacks were 4 for 22. They have a starting pitching ERA of 3.00 to the Diamondbacks 5.00 and a relief pitching ERA of 2.00 to the Diamondbacks relief pitching 4.9. Actually, no, those are reversed. Those two are reversed, actually.
Starting point is 00:09:35 had a relief pitching area of 2.00 and the Cincinnati Reds had 4.91. So essentially the only category the Diamondbacks did better there than the Reds would be in the relief pitching ERA, which is where in those close games, the Diamondbacks were able to score those runs and win those games, right? But again, we've always said it, Derek, the bullpen. I mean, that's the best thing about the Diamondbacks. If everyone else could just pull their weight, they'd be in a much better spot. Yeah, man. This one's a crazy one.
Starting point is 00:10:04 And then, of course, we've talked at times about Diamondbacks being on the other side of this, where they are the ones scoring the more runs and the more hits in a series. And in this case, they did it against the Reds. But neither team, to be honest, is playing very good baseball right now. And you can tell, based on these numbers right here, especially offensively, the 12 to 10, with the way Diamondbacks games have gone this season, this could be just for one game. This could be just for one game for some of the high, the potent offensive games, the Diamondbacks have had, but that is a three-game series, and the Diamondbacks take two out of three.
Starting point is 00:10:38 I don't really, I mean, I don't know. I don't know what to think. I don't want to get too high on this. The Diamondbacks did what they were supposed to. They do have some, I mean, not weak opponents ahead, but they do have some winnable series, some winnable games. They do have a series starting with the Detroit Tigers, who have been very good when it comes to pitching, but not so good in other parts of the game. but I mean the diamondbacks do have some series coming up here that they could win against the marlins against the Mets however they also have the Dodgers on the horizon and that's never great to be tough yeah that's never great but again right now the diamondbacks are right there they're right record wise they're right where I think we wanted them to be as far as treading water and waiting especially for I guess who we could call the big four now to come back we got Erod Merrill Kelly and then we got Alec Thomas and Geraldo Perdomo both to return here soon. And the Diamondbacks can really use those guys. But in the meantime, there's one man that's been doing it for this team. And he is our King Snake for this series.
Starting point is 00:11:44 We're giving it to Kevin Newman. You're goddamn right we are. Big Kev, six for ten in this series. Not many else. Numbers weren't great outside of that. Two RBI, one walk. You scored a run. But the fact is, is that Kevin Newman has really, especially over the last
Starting point is 00:12:01 week, last two weeks, really just been a pleasant surprise for the Arizona Diamondbacks on both sides of the ball. He's been pretty damn good offensively and defensively he has just been the answer that the Diamondbacks did not have in regards to Predomo missing time right now. I mean, four straight multi-hit games. Like he entered, he entered Saturday's game against the Orioles with a 501 OPS. And now he has a seven. 736 OPS. He raised his OPS more than 200 points in the span of four days. And I guess yesterday he did go for three.
Starting point is 00:12:40 His OPS is actually higher than that prior to yesterday's game. But he's been everything the debacks could have possibly hoped for in that spot. He obviously came through with an enormous hit in this series coming through with the walkoff on Monday. That Monday game felt like the type of game the debucks would surely have lost. a few weeks ago, right? A thousand percent. It just sort of a back and forth where the debacks left all kinds of base runners. I think they had like 19 base runners throughout the course of that game.
Starting point is 00:13:12 It was it was kind of absurd that they only scored six runs. But they did what they needed to. They were able to make that final push at the end there, you know, down one run going into the bottom of the ninth. And they turned it around and were able to win the game. Newman was obviously a really big part of that. And you look at his. numbers for the season. Derek and Kevin Newman has been a pretty good player for this devax team.
Starting point is 00:13:36 At this point, he has 0.8 B-Wore. He has a 110 OPS plus. He has been an above-average hitter. He's been an above-average defender. The only Diamondbacks players that have been worth more B-Wore than Kevin Newman are Citell-Marte, Jock Peterson, Christian Walker, Zach Gallen, and Ryan Thompson. It's those five guys. And then it is Kevin Newman. right after them. So again, he's been everything the D-Backs could have hoped for. Obviously,
Starting point is 00:14:07 you still want Pranomo back. He's still going to bring a lot when he returns. But talk about a stopgap coming in and stepping up to fill a need. Newman has done that for this team. If you can scroll back there a little bit, Damon, the Greg Jr., a big fan of the Greg Sr.
Starting point is 00:14:22 His father said Newman, awesome. But talk about the Marte-Shimmy needs to be a new base-hit celebration. Ketel-Marte in the middle of a, a 15 game hitting streak now. Incredible, by the way. This man, I mean, he's, he's held, he's held the line, if you know what I mean, because we hold the line around here.
Starting point is 00:14:43 Cattel has held the line when nobody else offensively has really been there consistently to help him out. But, yeah, I mean, we, we could talk about Cattel literally every single episode of this show based on the fact that this man, defensively, incredible, offensively, incredible. I mean, I think the biggest problem is, is, that Tori still is going to need to find time to give him a day off here and there. And every single time we're going to be upset about it because Kutel is vital right now to this team's success. And you saw it the other day.
Starting point is 00:15:12 I'm not saying that if Ketel would have started in game two, the Dimebacks would have gotten a suite. But who knows to say it didn't go that way if Ketel would have been in there. You can't because we don't live in that reality. I mean, the best thing about Ketel right now, though, is absolutely the shimmy that he pulled off in that Sunday game. And for those who are not aware, this was a hard one hopper off the bat of Mike Ford in yesterday's game. And, yeah, I could tell. Fielded it made a nice play. As he's done so often this season, he's been so good defensively at second base this year.
Starting point is 00:15:44 And, you know, he knew he had time, Derek. Like Mike Ford is one of the slower players in the league. It was hit so hard. It was right out of him. He had plenty of time to get the ball over to first base. So, you know, why not throw the shimmy in there? Because it was necessary because him catching that ball was so cold that he was. just needed the one out real fast.
Starting point is 00:16:02 You know what I mean? And we all know that, you know, at least a decent portion of people are probably put off by this because that sort of thing happens. Oh, you're celebrating big play. Shut up. Go watch something else. And if you watch that other thing, you'll probably find people celebrating midway through a play there as well.
Starting point is 00:16:21 It's fun. It's supposed to be fun. Sports is a form of entertainment. Stop taking the shit so seriously. As long as he makes the play. As long as he makes the play. It'd be like shibis and then he's laid on the throw. Like loses control of the ball and watches it into the air.
Starting point is 00:16:36 Yeah. But Kattel, he's the most fun player to watch, honestly, in baseball for me personally. And maybe it's just because I get to watch him so often. But Kutel by far, if you are like just watch Kattel, forget the fantastic plays he makes or the way he hits or everything else he does. Just watch him off the ball sometimes and the way he interacts with opposing players or the other day. when both him and Kevin Newman both needed to put the fake tags on Stuart Fairchild, which caused him to go into second player or to feel secure there at second base. Like there are things like that that Catelle does all the time.
Starting point is 00:17:11 97% of the time his little ploys don't work, but it's the 3% of the times that it's incredible when he pulls something off. My favorite Cattell moment of the series might not have been the shimmy. I think it was when the D-Backs caught L.E. De La Cruz trying to get to second base. That was in the first game of this series. He ran off faster than I've ever seen him run in his life. Yeah, it was very well executed.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Yeah, it was Lordis throwing it to Cattell, then Catell over to Christian Walker. They got him hung up between first and second. Walker fires it back to second. Kattel puts the tag on Dela Cruz, big out. Anytime you can get L.A. Dela Cruz out on the base paths is obviously enormous. And Cattel just like darts, like faster than you've ever seen Cotel run back into the dugout, which is so incredibly on brand for him.
Starting point is 00:17:58 It is. And yeah. That's when he does his best sprinting when it doesn't matter. Yeah. When he draws a walk or when he knows that his team is just pulled off an electric defense to play and he is just fired up about it. But yeah, Kattel looks, he just looks so engaged this year, right? It's not just that he's doing the thing at the plate and, you know, hitting home runs
Starting point is 00:18:21 and being really the driving force behind the Diamondbacks offense. It's that he's playing outstanding defense at second base. He just looks engaged in all facets of the game. And you have to believe that part of that is that the debacks are they're in the mix. Like they're expecting to go places this year. There's a long way to go. But Ketel really seems to have kind of thrived off that energy. And he also looks gigantic, by the way.
Starting point is 00:18:47 He is in the best shape of his life. I mean, like honestly, not to get into too much detail, but I said this the other day. Like he wasn't shirtless. He was just wearing like a long sleeve. tight shirt and I realize how big he's gotten and he still doesn't look it but Cattel isn't that you know fast
Starting point is 00:19:06 hitter that he was anymore the dude is built and he's here to try to like I think that's the reason why we're seeing the consistency and his ability to go out there every day and at least contribute something especially over this hitting streak. I mean we know what he did in the playoffs last year so it just feels
Starting point is 00:19:22 like he never stopped it feels like Catell just carried on over when we talk about the struggles that Corbyn and Gabby and other players might be experiencing, Catelle hasn't missed a beat. He, yeah, and that's part of this whole bat speed metric
Starting point is 00:19:36 stuff that we just got. Part of what makes it cool is you just get a better feel of just how much strength various players have. And Catell, I mean, his right-handed swing, the only right-handed swing in baseball, at least among qualified hitters that is more powerful
Starting point is 00:19:52 than his is Jean-Carlo Stan. It's literally Stan 1. Cattel Marte as a right-handed hitter. number two. Yeah, I remember when he first came over in the trade and it was like, oh, here's a guy. You can steal some bases. Yeah. He was like pretty good at bunting.
Starting point is 00:20:07 I remember him laying down a nasty bunt in the playoffs back in 2017. He seemed like a nice little player, but he's blossomed into a whole lot more than that. I don't know why that seemed derogatory the way you said it, but he is a nice little bit. Well, you know what I mean? Like the slap hitter, like, oh, like this is a guy, this is a guy you want on your team. Like he's going to do, he's going to do the little thing. He's going to get on base, but he's not going to hit bombs. The man's a fucking superstar.
Starting point is 00:20:33 And Cattel hits bombs. Well, yeah. Jesse doesn't lie. And we know that. Me, it's questionable if I lie. Damon, known Fibber. But you know who doesn't lie? The numbers don't lie.
Starting point is 00:20:46 Jesse, what do you have for today's numbers for this game or the series? What do you got? Or for this year? What are you actually this year, right? Yeah, we're going to talk a little Ryan Thompson here. So, yeah, I figured you'd be excited about this. 0.87 is the number, Derek, because 0.87 represents Ryan Thompson's career ERA in the regular season since joining the Arizona Diamondbacks. That's fucking wild.
Starting point is 00:21:11 Are you serious? Yet another scoreless inning on Wednesday, Ryan Thompson has now allowed three earned runs in 31 innings pitched since being acquired on a minor league deal by the Diamondbacks last August. That's my dunes. He has been a revelation for this team. And some of you might have seen this on Twitter, but I, of course, had to do a little research. I had to figure out who has the lowest ERA in Diamondbacks history. It's not even close.
Starting point is 00:21:39 Conveniently minimum 30 innings pitched as Ryan Thompson just crossed over that threshold. But yes, Ryan Thompson is far and away the leader at number one with his 0.87 ERA as a member of the Diamondbacks. Fun list here, Derek. We've got Clay Buckholes in the number two spot. who I think he was so good. He was remarkably good. In 2018, the Diamondbacks brought in Clay Buckles, like when he was not at all in the prime of his career, but boy, did he look it for about four months.
Starting point is 00:22:10 It was an unbelievable run. So a 2.01 ERA from him. We also have Tim Worrell. I'm not going to lie. I'm not super familiar with his game. But he has a 2.27 ERA. I believe that was back in 2005 as a member of the D.E. D-backs.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Brad Ziegler, a familiar name of the number four spot. He's the heir apparent. The heir apparent to Brad Ziggler. A 25-7-E-R-A there. Ziegler is kind of in his own category here because he's thrown way more innings as a member of the D-BACs than any of the other guys. So his 257 is honestly more impressive than anyone else on this list, probably by a wide margin.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Because it's real. I don't know, dude. 0.87 is pretty insane. 0.87, even over 30-31 innings is pretty insane. And then at the number five spot, Derek, I had to go down. and number five because trade jameson five on the list with a career debacks the r a of 2.63
Starting point is 00:23:02 put that fire in my blood let's go there you go yeah um yeah no Ryan Thompson uh incredible by the way when it comes to his knowledge of pro wrestling might trump mine I don't know he's a very it's hard to do when he's done in his playing
Starting point is 00:23:18 career though he is going to most likely get a job with WW or AEW as a booker because the man knows it stuff but he doesn't just lead any RA Jesse what else do we have you got yeah I also tweeted this out as well yeah of course I did look at the lowest whip in diamondbacks history as well minimum 30 innings pitch okay there's some dogs on this list might even be more fun there's some dogs on that Ryan Thompson of course is number one at 0.65 number two is Kurt Schilling at 1.04 number three is
Starting point is 00:23:49 clay buckholes again at 1.04 legend and then number four this This is probably my favorite entry. Slade. Slade. Slade Soconi, who somehow is a 1.07 career whip, even though his career ERA, I think is in the fours at this point. And then number five on the list, Derek, is Randy Johnson. And I've always viewed Clay Buckholes and Slate Cicone as being kind of sandwiched between Johnson and chilling in terms of Diamondbacks pitching lore. Totally, especially Slate.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Right there. He's right there. Man. Ryan Thompson. There is a I think it was Elise said it back because it was hilarious when she said it But at least said seems like the kind of arm a team like Tampa Bay could use right now Yeah, she's not wrong when they could the raise I I haven't tracked the raise super closely this year But I believe their bullpen has been part of part of what's gone wrong there
Starting point is 00:24:47 Boy is Ryan Thompson been good since since coming over to the debacks and on a personal note Jesse can attest to this we're best friends. Yeah. I was kind of how much. I didn't know what to do with myself when we're, we weren't even over by Ryan Thompson's locker. We were just kind of standing where the media generally hangs out in the D-Backs clubhouse the other day.
Starting point is 00:25:10 And Ryan Thompson came over and ignored me and put his arm around Derek and started asking Derek pro wrestling questions. You wanted to know who I, who my pick for the king of the ring was. Yeah, of course, don't even know with that. So I just smile and nod as you guys are having your conversation. The look at disgust on Jesse's face when we start to go into it is something I've never seen before. Hey, oh gosh, is so hard when we do it.
Starting point is 00:25:35 It's amazing. But of course, we thank you guys for being here in the PHNX sports YouTube channel. We thank Ryan Thompson for being as good as he's been. And of course, if you haven't subscribed to this channel yet, make sure you do so now. That way you don't miss any whenever our shows go live, like our wonderful brand new hockey show. PHNX hockey show. That's right. Hockey is back on this network.
Starting point is 00:25:55 We're not fucking leaving. We're not fucking leaving. We're not going anywhere right here on this channel. Make sure to not miss out on our wonderful hockey crew giving you all the updates and insight on hockey. You can make sure to sign up for notifications. That way you don't mess when we go live with our emergency podcasts and other shows that we do. And you can also drop us a like. Leave us a like.
Starting point is 00:26:15 There's plenty of guys to see Corman's here today to tell you to leave a like. It's usually Gabby, but he has dental work. He has to get done today. Yeah. He always says something. He always has some reason. It's about time he did it on the off day. Yeah, do it on the off day.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Yeah, what are we doing? But of course, we thank you guys for listening on the audio podcasting side as well. Make sure you're subscribed on your favorite app. Leave us a review. We always appreciate that. Those five-star reviews definitely help us out a ton. Of course, I also want to give a shout out to our brand new pickleball location, which is where I'm going to spend all my time.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Chicken and pickle, by the way. Hey, it's on the west side, man. It's on the west side. It's actually like kind of close to you. It's gigantic and beautiful. And I had no idea that this place was as amazing as it was. But we had an absolute blast out there. It was a lot of fun, right?
Starting point is 00:27:03 That you might ask yourself like why, why a pickleball place? Because there's wonderful food. There's wonderful drink. It's indoors. It's air conditioned. And we had an absolute blast playing it. I think even people that had never played pickleball before had a good time picking it up yesterday.
Starting point is 00:27:19 I know Damon was one of them. I know Danielle was out there. Saul's a tough taskmaster So when you're on his team You got to bring your A game Yeah, I'm terrified when I'm on Saul's team In any kind of game like that I was a duo went four in one
Starting point is 00:27:32 And I'd like to say that I might be one of the best pickleball players in this building That's all I'm saying Didn't even know it myself did not even know it myself Bo and I were actually thinking about making a professional duo quitting here and just going pro We need to do we need to talk about Bo's level of aggression on the pickleball court because him and I don't think him and Jacob understand that there aren't scouts out there. signing you guys, okay?
Starting point is 00:27:56 So like, let's calm it down a little. I had to get in his ear. He had the serving yips and he kept blowing it. And I had to be like, you're too good of an athlete for this to happen. He kept telling me, keep talking to me like this. It's going to break me out of it. It worked.
Starting point is 00:28:10 It did. My serves were on point. But of course, if you want to go to a place that has indoor, outdoor pickleball, cornhole, ping pong. They had a giant battleship game. No one wanted to dare play me in battleship, but it looked amazing. Of course. I just played ping pong with tochry outside.
Starting point is 00:28:26 Did you smoke? Yeah, how'd that go, by the way? I did kind of smoke him. And there were, I saw Tocry chasing the ball a lot, is what I saw. I saw Jesse standing there with the cocky looking at his face again. Well, no, because that's not how ping pong works. I was chasing the ball around a lot because when he misses, I have to pay the price and she's after it. You should have heard Jesse walking out there talking with Totree.
Starting point is 00:28:45 So Tocry goes up to Jesse and he goes, it was. So funny, Derek. Oh, my God. He walks up to Jesse. I want to play ping pong against you, Jesse, because I've heard you're really good. And Jesse's like, yeah, I'm pretty good. And then they're walking out there, and Jesse's in his ear chirping him going, this isn't going to end so well for you, Cochrie. Like, just steadily talking shit walking off the door.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Yeah, that's my boy. I just like to just tell the truth to my friends, you know. It was the truth. He did break double digits. Okay. We were playing at 21. He did break double digits a couple of times. A couple of times.
Starting point is 00:29:22 Yikes. Cute little performance by him. Well, if you want to go beat up on your friends the way that he did Tootree, make sure to head to chickenpickle.com. That's chicken and pickle.com to see all the fun you can have at their Glendale location. And call me and invite me. I'll come out.
Starting point is 00:29:36 I'm kind of close to there. And I will happily come. We'll both come beat up on people in our respective sports. But we also got to give a shout out to Shady Ray's. Of course, I had my Shady Ray's on out there. There was some outdoor activity, fun times. But, of course, we know it's hot. We know, of course, you want to be indoors.
Starting point is 00:29:54 But if you are outdoors here in Arizona, you want to have yourself a good pair of sunglasses. I'm sorry, Gabriel. Gabriel's going through it. Yeah, Jesse, it'll change your life. He'll make you think differently about yourself if you play them and ping pong. Of course, Shady Raises is an independent sunglasses company offering a world-class product, rated five stars by over. 300,000 people. Their shades

Starting point is 00:30:53 Again, try for yourself the shades rated five stars by over 300,000 people. Ping pong is really my only, my only area of weak of strength. Yeah. It's about terms of athletic things like Gabriel could probably beat me in anything else, I guess, what I'm trying to say. I mean, that's nice of you to try to make it too hard. For the audio listeners, Gabriel said Jesse Humiliated. me in ping pong i was embarrassed and i haven't been back to a phnx social
Starting point is 00:31:19 yeah actually actually if i'm not mistaken he left the country over it and has not been back to the united states since then so that's a pretty hard l when you have to just up and leave your country he did alpha to tree right yeah no i mean of course there is definitely uh a lot of ls being handed out in baseball these days and uh some teams that deserve to be talking a lot of trash when it comes to their competition let's take a look at our melb power rankings for this week because those Phillies, they refuse to lose and they have charged their way right up our power rankings to the number one spot. The Phillies are 31 and 13, Derek.
Starting point is 00:31:57 They just had another five and one week, back to back five and one weeks from them. They're just a really good baseball team. And Rangers Juarez is probably going to start the All-Star game for the National League. And that's just how it's going to be. Those are facts. Yeah, it's going to be Rangers Suarez against Seth Lugo. And we're all just going to have to take it in and enjoy both of those guys. Off the Outstanding starts this year.
Starting point is 00:32:22 The Dodgers down to the two hole. They were three and three this past week. Still playing pretty good baseball. The Dodgers have had some issues with the bottom of their lineup. It has just kind of been, you know, the Betso-Tani Freeman Will Smith show in recent days. Andy Paw has slowed down a bit. James Outman, of course. James Outman is an outman.
Starting point is 00:32:41 Continues to struggle a bit. David loves it. So, yeah, Dodgers. stinks. Not as good of a week from them, but they're still up in the two spot at 29 and 16. We got the Braves at number three. I mean, hardly any movement outside of that, right? Braves at three, they're
Starting point is 00:32:55 still in the same spot. Yankees still at four. Orioles still at five. Guardians at six. Royals at seven. None of those teams move. The Brewers up two spots to number eight. Twins stay where they were at nine and then the Cubs make their first appearance here on the power rankings
Starting point is 00:33:11 this week at 10th. And yeah, I mean, hard to argue with some of these teams considering the way that they perform. I mean, you might even consider maybe the twins, you know, being a better team than the ninth best team in baseball right now with the way they're playing. But as you have said, they have played some weaker opponents at times. So I'm not sure how much you want to stock you want to put into them. But again, taking care of business, taking care of business, right?
Starting point is 00:33:37 Yeah. And on that note, the Philadelphia Phillies. So they are 31 and 13, Derek. how many games do you think they've played against teams that are above 500? Just take a random. They played 44 games, 12. They're a reasonable guess. They have played three.
Starting point is 00:33:57 What? They have played three. And granted, this is something that like changes over the course of the years. In 44 games, they played three games. To use you are currently above 500, the Philadelphia Phillies. They had one series against the Atlanta Braves. every other series the Phillies have played this year has been against the team
Starting point is 00:34:17 who is currently below 500, which is absolutely wild. And honestly, it made me want to not put them number one just because three games against these above 500, but it also made me realize that there just aren't that many teams above 500 in the National League right now, right? You've got the Dodgers, you've got the Phillies,
Starting point is 00:34:36 you've got the Brewers, you've got the Braves, and you've got the Cubs, and there are no others, right? the Padres are I think just under 500. D-BACs, of course, are just under 500. The Mets, there's a bunch of teams kind of bunched up together there. So, yeah, I mean, the National League right now is just kind of crappy. It's super top-heavy, and there's just not a lot of teams playing good baseball. Where are the Colorado Rockies and why aren't they at 8 on this list, Jesse?
Starting point is 00:35:05 Answer me that. Where are they? It led me to an interesting thought experiment of, like, how many games would the Rockies have to win consecutively. For them to get a number 10 appearance on the power rankings. Like even if they were still well below 500, like if the Rockies won 20 consecutive games, but were still like well out of the playoff picture,
Starting point is 00:35:28 am I here to say that they wouldn't be top 10 in my power rankings? Right, because your power rankings typically are just what's happened in baseball over the last week, right? Right. And it's like you're not really going to necessarily ever have a team in like, dead last, all of a sudden make it into the top 10 in baseball. However, if a team goes undefeated, there has to be a certain number of games you win in a row. If a team goes undefeated over like a 15 game stretch, it's hard not to at least include them in this. I mean, honorable mention is great, but yeah, it would be hard not to include them in this at this point.
Starting point is 00:36:00 I mean, the Rockies still have a terrible record. And that's, you know, they're 15 and 28. But this division right now, I mean, you know, I don't know, everybody, nobody in this division, and aside from the Dodgers is really standing out. So the Rockies, especially with how the rest of us are kind of just, you know, kind of kind of hovering around mediocrity could be right back in the mix before we know it. Yeah, it's kind of a funny situation for the for the Padres, honestly, because the Padres took two out of three from the Dodgers over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:36:31 And then they get sweat by the Rogers. And Louisa Rise came through with a big walkoff hit. There was so much hype in San Diego. And then the Rockies come to town. And the Rockies, the Rockies didn't just sweep the Padres, Derek. The Rockies outscored the Padres 19 to 7 in this series in San Diego. And of course, all of the jokes are flying right now about how the Padres already won their World Series because they took two out of three from the Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:36:57 The Dodgers fans are so annoying, man. They're just the worst people. Just in general. But the Rockies are genuinely cruising right now. And I find that to be delightful and amusing because they're the Rockies and they're not a good baseball theme. Well, yeah. And it's fine because just like the Cincinnati Reds are struggling, the Rockies are on fire and that's what happens in baseball. Sometimes because this is a game where a guy hitting the ball 28% of the time is considered so much better than a guy hitting the ball 22% of the time, we fucking lose sight of the fact that teams can go get hot, especially if you have multiple guys playing well.
Starting point is 00:37:33 Charlie Blackman's been playing well. a few of their veteran guys that you don't really think that you're going to get much out of have been playing well. And I mean, that's Brent Doyle. Yeah, they're doing this with Chris Bryant, I think right now, right? They don't have Chris Bryant. They don't have. I mean, they haven't really had Chris Bryant ever since the time that contract. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Yeah, Ryan McMahon has played well for them. Brent and Doyle has taken some really big strides forward offensively on the pitching side. Cal Quantrell is a three. Austin Gomber has a 3.02 ERA and nine starts. Absurd. And Quancho's a 3.66. There's some, hey man, if I'm the Giants right now and I've got, and I've got, you know, day off today taking on the Rockies for the weekend, I don't know how I'm feeling going
Starting point is 00:38:23 into that series. You don't want to catch this team right now. Peace of Yoshi earlier was attacking me for talking about the Mets series as being upcoming. That's the way the upcoming series worked, by the way. Yoshi. You got the tigers, then they have the Dodgers, then the Marlins, then the Rangers, then the Mets. And then honestly, like, that's that they, they see a whole lot of NL West after that. They just, they have the little respits, but you don't even know if some of those teams that
Starting point is 00:38:50 they're going to play are going to be bad or not. I mean, they do take on the Angels and the White Sox in two series consecutively, and then they play the Nationals. Like, ideally those, what, nine games right there should all be very winnable, but the Nationals are playing pretty good baseball right now and some of the other teams are too so you just never know when you're catching these teams it's again the reason why and looking back at the red series it was so important for the diamondbacks to get take care of business against a struggling team you don't want to be the team that gets the reds right you want to be the team that attacks them and gets you know some wins in there before they do get right right so uh down the down the down the down backs have
Starting point is 00:39:24 tigers team that was playing pretty good baseball early on but hopefully they can also catch here at a time where at least offensively, they're not doing so hot. But anyway, we do have, of course, to let you guys know, go stop by Circle K right now. Gas, it's getting lower, right? We're seeing some prices coming down.

Also, make sure stop by Circle K. Get your Four Peaks there as well. Well, before we get out of here, we did want to be. want to talk about the fact that we just passed, I guess, the quarter season mark for a very long regular baseball season, right?
Starting point is 00:41:36 It's 162 games. Diamondbacks now have surpassed that, that 40, I guess, 41 game mark, if you want to call it that. Yeah, we're certainly a little late here. They're 27% the way of the season. So we're a couple days behind. I knew. I knew.
Starting point is 00:41:50 I didn't want to do this segment now. But we did want to talk about where the diamond backs are at, because at times it does feel like this team very broken, very lost. But some of the numbers do say that this team is not nearly as bad as one might think, right? I mean, just today I found out that the Diamondbacks trail only the Toronto Blue Jays and out's above average as a whole. And we know defensively that we tend to think of this team as not being as good as they've been in the past.
Starting point is 00:42:20 That might not be the case. We just watch all the games. We see all the mistakes. We know what's going on out there. We know how Lordis makes every fly ball out to left field look like it's the hardest thing to catch in the world, right? But they're getting the job done in a lot of areas. Yeah, well, I guess we can start with the defense. Yeah, debacks are six in defensive run, Cade with 18.
Starting point is 00:42:41 They're second in OAA, as you said, with 14. They are now tied for the eighth fewest errors in baseball with 21. That's something they've been a lot better at here over the last few weeks. Yeah, for sure. They were near the top of the league in airs. at the beginning of the season. And most of them were Blaze Alexander's, to be fair, but they were spread around. That is true.
Starting point is 00:43:01 Yeah. There were some uncharacteristic sloppy play, not just by Blaze Alexander at the beginning of the season. Things have really tightened up as the season has gone on. As you expect, D-backs have also been pretty darn good at keeping base dealers from doing their thing. They have allowed the third few of stolen bases in the league at 18. They've caught nine, which is pretty impressive.
Starting point is 00:43:25 if you're catching a third of attempting base Steelers there, that is definitely better than the league average. One downside on defense that I found, though, Derek, which I had not discovered until today, is that the debacks are second in the league in wild pitches, which is something I have noticed is Tucker Barnhart and Gabriel Moreno, if you go to their baseball savon pages, neither of them grade out well in the blocking category.
Starting point is 00:43:48 So that has been, if you're kind of, you know, poking at things the defense could do better, blocking pitches behind the play, both for Barnhart and Moreno. That's something they could get better. I was going to ask that. Does that essentially fall on the catcher even though it's not necessarily a past ball? Yeah, that's a fair point. Yeah, I'm glad you said that because wild pitches are not inherently the catchers fall.
Starting point is 00:44:08 They're generally. The pitchers are going through it. But I kind of had a sense that there were some pretty blockable baseballs that those guys were letting get by. Yeah. Of course, the most memorable one is Gabby Moreno, letting the Kevin Ginkle ball go. go to the, and then losing track of it and that whole thing. Not that that wasn't a legitimate wild pitch by Ginkle. No, but it's impacted the outcome of baseball games.
Starting point is 00:44:32 That's how bad. There have been more, like if you're second in league and wild pitches, chances are it's not just your pitchers. And there's something there from a catching standpoint as well. And the baseball savant metrics spare that out. So that's something they could do better. Sticking kind of on the fringes here, base running is something where you're used to seeing the Diamondbacks be very, very good at.
Starting point is 00:44:52 And they've actually not really done very much in that regard to this season. The debacks are just, they are 27th. They are tied for 27th in the league with 19 stolen bases. They've been caught eight times, which is not a good percentage at all whatsoever. And then FanGraphs has a base running metric that tracks, you know, taking extra bases on the base paths and, you know, scoring from second and all of the little, the little things. And the debacks are just 15th in baseball.
Starting point is 00:45:21 at negative 0.8 in that stats, a little bit below average. How much do you blame the fact that they've been caught eight times on impacting that? Because it feels like there's apprehension there. It feels like they don't want to kind of follow that game plan they had last year. I'm not saying that that's not the smartest thing at times because when there is a game plan, people know exist, they can essentially plan for that. And they can tighten up and make sure that they try their best not to let you, you know, run on the base path. But it does very much feel like the Diamondbacks kind of like what happened in,
Starting point is 00:45:56 at times in the playoffs last year. They've kind of changed their, at least how much they're attempting to run and how much they're attempting to create that chaos. I felt like last year, everybody watching knew at times Jake and Corbyn were going to steal a base once they got on first. You could look over at them and you could just tell that they were going to go. It was just a matter of when they were going to go. And they were still successful based on the fact that it always seemed like they were applying that pressure to the opposing team. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. The debacks just haven't, they just haven't been as aggressive this year for one reason or another.
Starting point is 00:46:29 Obviously, a huge factor in this is that Corbyn Carroll has not been on base a whole lot. And so when you're not on base as much, you just can't, you can't steal bases as much. But yeah, the debacks last year in that fan grafts based running metric led the league at 18.9 base running runs above average this year, as I said, they're at negative 0.8 as of right now. So they have not been, base running has not been an asset for this team at all. In fact, in moments, it's looked pretty ugly. They've made some unnecessary outs on the bases. So that's something to tighten up for sure.
Starting point is 00:47:01 Switching over to the pitching side of things. I just want to say something. Michael Rokicke here in the chat says, calling what Corbs is going through a slump is being nice. Yeah, that's fair. That's fair. But let's not forget what Dr. Seuss said. When you're in a slump, you're not in for much fun, unslumping yourself.
Starting point is 00:47:20 is not easily done. Oh, the places you'll go. So remember that. It's not easily to unslump yourself, okay? But Corbyn's making his way through it. And it is definitely bad. But-
Starting point is 00:47:31 Do you just pull out a Dr. Seas quote on the, on the vibe? Derek, what are we doing? I needed to. Because the offense, I mean, there's a lot of slumping going on in times with this offense, right?
Starting point is 00:47:41 But, I mean, Corbin is by far, like, the most concerning for people, I think, considering how big of a piece they feel he is of this offense, but the offense as a whole has a lot of pieces right now that's not working.
Starting point is 00:47:54 And as much as we have the reinforcements coming from the injury list, I also am encouraged at least that you and I, neither one of us think that these guys that aren't hitting well right now, like Guriel and Geno and even Corbyn, it can't last, right? Lie to me, Jesse. Lie to me right now. I mean, I've said a bunch of times, like I think Corbyn's going to figure this out, but baseball is really freaking hard. And as much as I would love to come out and guarantee that by next week,
Starting point is 00:48:27 it's going to look good and he's going to be back to being the Corp and Carol of last year, that's just not a guarantee. But on the whole, we jump into some of the offense numbers, the debacks, no matter how much it's felt over the last few weeks, like this team just does not consistently score runs. They still, Derek, are fourth in the league and runs scored at 250. Don't believe it. Don't believe it.
Starting point is 00:48:51 It's not real. There's 715. Team OPS ranks ninth in the league. They are the tied for the fifth lowest strikeout rate at 19.8%. They are tied for the seventh highest walk rate at 9.4%. Those are all very good metrics. Pretty good in both of those stats. But as we've touched on in the past, debaX has scored a whole lot of runs in situations where they did not need to.
Starting point is 00:49:15 And that very much skews all of these numbers. they still have a 614 OPS in high leverage situations. Something that feels like it's been a little better maybe over the last few weeks. There have been a few more of those big hits. We saw one with Lourdes yesterday to get you over the top and help you win a close baseball game. But that's still something for them to improve upon as the year goes on. Now, we do know pitching right now has been very up and down for this team. It feels like things are leveling out, both in.
Starting point is 00:49:48 in the bullpen and when it comes to starting pitching mostly because things were very erratic for this team. They had so many injuries. They've had so many changes. They've had guys that they were looking to that aren't on the major league roster anymore or they're injured. And right now, honestly, like, it really does feel like even though some of these numbers aren't great that the Diamondbacks are on the better side of it over the last two weeks than on the wrong side of it. Yeah, I mean, they're tied for 18th with a 417 ERA in terms of starting pitching. And that's pretty impressive, given that Merrill Kelly and Erod. Erod hasn't thrown a pitch.
Starting point is 00:50:22 Merrill Kelly's only made a handful of starts. To have basically a league average starting rotation with both of those guys out. It's pretty impressive. It's a testament to the debacks having better starting pitching depth this year than they've had really just about as long as I can remember. So, yeah, the starting pitching hasn't been great, but it hasn't been terrible. They have a 398 FIP, a 392X FIP, both lower than that 417 RA, which suggests. Maybe DVAC's starter's been a bit unlucky to this point. The year Brandon Fott certainly has.
Starting point is 00:50:54 We touched on him earlier. His expected ERA is 3.04 right now, even though it's actually R.A. is 417. Well, and it's because sometimes the mistakes being made defensively aren't things that come up on, you know, as an error. Or they're not things that might come up in one of these outs above average or defensive run safe kind of categories. But at the same time, you know, we've seen it many times where, you know, an inning that looks like it's, about to be over gets extended by some sort of mistake by somebody in you know sometimes it's the pitcher but in a lot of cases it's been fielders that then extend the inning and like it does feel like they've been unlucky in that in that aspect and some of those runs do score because of those
Starting point is 00:51:34 extended innings however it does feel like the diamondbacks are kind of giving a better idea of what they're getting out of guys like slade and and and ryan nelson and of course jordan mcgomery has kind of come back online so i expect to see all these numbers get better and one they do get Merrill Kelly and Erod back. Still could be a really good rotation. It really could. We just don't know when we're going to see that. Right.
Starting point is 00:51:55 Might not be until the All-Star break until we see all of these guys back. So yeah. But relief pitching, that's another area of concern for this team, possibly the biggest at times. I don't know. I mean, offensively, you could say that's also been a concern. But we know how much the relief pitching has been up and down this year. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, more down than up, probably.
Starting point is 00:52:16 but the staff bullpen ERA is not that bad. It's 4.33, which is 11th highest. So it's in the bottom half of the league, but it's not terrible. As we touched on before, the debacks relievers have been a lot better in low-leverged situations than in high-levered situations when games really count. Opposing hitters are still slashing 318, 408, 458 against them in high-leverage situations.
Starting point is 00:52:42 Their strikeout rate in high-levered situations is 13.8%, which is very, very low. The next lowest team, I believe, was 17%. So the debacks are kind of off in their own territory, just not a lot of swing and miss in some of the biggest moments of games. Yeah, we've seen. So, yeah, it's still, the bullpen has been worse
Starting point is 00:53:01 than that 4.33 ERA would suggest, but we have Paul Seawald back now. Justin Martinez has really taken some steps forward. Right now it just feels like the debacks sort of positive role relievers, so you feel pretty good about. Ginkle has struggled a little bit lately, but you figure he's probably going to figure it out,
Starting point is 00:53:21 Ryan Thompson doing what he's done. Seawald's looked pretty good since he came back. Justin Martinez, as I said, you know, coming on strong lately. But some of the negative role guys, there's still some questions there. You don't know exactly what you're going to get from Matt Bowman, Logan Allen,
Starting point is 00:53:34 has struggled a bit recently. And I hate that term, by the way. What, the positive role, negative role? I hate the positive role and negative role. It's stories, not mine. No, no, no. And I know it is because I've been, present when he's talked about it.
Starting point is 00:53:46 But not only does that paint a bad picture for those guys, right? Like, you're not a high leverage guy. You're a negative situation guy, right? It does for his like affirming and reassuring and confidence building as Tori Lavello seems positive role, negative role doesn't, it doesn't exactly line up with that in some ways. I hadn't thought about that. It's also the approach, right? Like I am sure Tori has his own mind of what is a positive and negative role, right?
Starting point is 00:54:11 And I'm sure he's talking more about using those guys in a game where they're down by three runs plus and it's more for eating innings and not allowing his bullpen to get destroyed for a competitive game the following day rather than going and trying to keep the game close by sending someone like Justin Martinez out there even though the team might be down by four runs right I get that there's just times where it's felt like they wave the white flag on a game simply because they brought out a bowman or an Allen instead of bringing out somebody like Justin Martinez that's the reason why I don't like that negative positive role thing Yeah, and if other teams, if they're doing their due diligence, they understand that that's the position they're in as well.
Starting point is 00:54:49 And I mean, you're just like, I mean, at that point, you're just, it's blood in the water. And you're like, oh, they got one of their shitty relievers out there because they're down by three runs. We're going to go out there and pounce on them, right? Like, Logan Allen has actually been good for this team in those longer roles. It's just kind of a misuse of him at times when Tori decides to turn to them in those negative situations that you're just going to like, hey, go out there and get two outs. That's not Logan Allen, right? like Logan Allen is kind of a guy that should be utilized. And long relievers, as Tori has told us in the past,
Starting point is 00:55:19 they are the hardest to keep ready. Because if you're doing well and you're winning games or you're not losing games by a lot, you don't turn to those guys so then they don't get work. And it becomes one of those things you have to figure out how to keep them stretched out so that they can be that long reliever for you. There's just, there's a lot of stuff going on there. But anyway, that's all we got in regards to this quarter of the year roundup, though.
Starting point is 00:55:43 There's a lot of things to still be encouraged about here in regards to this team figuring itself out, Tori figuring out who he can count on. And realistically, like the return of not only the injured players, but the return of the guys that aren't playing very good baseball right now. If you can get Corby and Carroll back to being more of Corby and Carole. If you can get Gabby Moreno back to being a 250 hitter, these guys contributing along with the contributions from the guys who are hot right now, like Jack Peterson and Cattel Marte, really can turn this thing
Starting point is 00:56:13 around for this for this team at this point and they're not so far out of it that any fan should think that they don't have a shot here to not only turn things around but get hot at the right time as we go into the postseason and maybe do something special once again yeah come back for our three eighths season review uh coming up here in a few weeks can't wait for that stay tuned i can't wait for the 516 that's going to be a fucking bangor that would yeah that'd come before the three eighths actually Anyway, we thank you guys, of course, for stopping by.
