Starting point is 00:00:01 On today's show, we continue to do some bargain shopping for the Diamondbacks this off season to try to fill some of their positional needs. Also, you'll never guess who showed up on the Mask Singer. Well, you may have already guessed it if you're Robin Thick. Don't go anywhere. We'll be talking about all of this in 30 seconds. We have the PHNXD Backs podcast right here on PHMX. My name is Derek Monti, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. This is my vice mayor and your thunderstick, the one and only Jesse Friedman.
Starting point is 00:00:38 And of course, it is still the holiday shopping season, Jesse. I know that not for him. Is it? It's not for him. The holiday shopping season doesn't start for Jesse until about the 23rd of December. And that might even be a little early for this guy. But we do know that the Diamondbacks continue to try to find some additions this offseason on a budget, considering we do know they still got to get that first basement as well as potentially a closer for the bullpen. But we are going to talk about bringing back one of my favorite Arizona Diamondbacks of all time.
Starting point is 00:01:10 And it's it's my man crush. It's the one and only. Just Dingers Martinez. And I don't even care. We're going to go into stats. We're going to go into numbers. None of that matters. My answer is already, yes.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Take my money. But I guess Jesse will be a little bit more level-headed about it. Just to Jamie Martinez, though, he has been a guy that we've talked about coming over to this team quite a bit. And if you are a fan of this team, you definitely remember his brief stint here because it was rather legendary, Jesse. It was all right, Derek. the man the man hit 30 home runs and a half a season that's pretty good that'll that'll play at major league baseball uh yeah and it's funny to me that we're having this conversation because once again actually because one year ago we were having this same exact conversation and people were very much
Starting point is 00:02:00 on board derrick people were all aboard and i bring back jade martinez train a year ago and yeah i'm curious how people feel about this in the chat. I imagine that after J.D. had a okay but not great year with the New York Mets if people have maybe moved on from the idea of bringing him back to Arizona. However, I still think that there are some pretty valid reasons to think of J.D. Martinez as a decent target for the Diamondbacks this off season. He is not coming off the caliber of a year that he had with the Dodgers in 2023, but that also presumably brings his price tag down maybe into a place where it really could make sense for the
Starting point is 00:02:44 Diamondbacks. And that's kind of the basis for this whole conversation. Well, and like you said, I remember at this time last year, he was our priority as far as the DH. And that we weren't really that interested in the cost of someone like Jock Peterson. Then you fast forward to 2024. Jock Peterson ended up being. And this is without hyperbole, one of the best free agent acquisitions, I think, of last offseason. Right. I mean, and that goes across baseball. I think that he really did outperform his metrics from 2023, and I think he was a value based on what the nine-and-backs paid him, even with what they had to pay him this year, you know, as, you know, in him opting out. But let's take a look at J.D. Martinez's stats from 2024, because, of course, he was, he was pretty good in 2024, just not as good as we saw him be in the past, like you said, with the Dodgers. his numbers definitely dipped.
Starting point is 00:03:35 He slashed 235, 320, 406, with 16 home runs, 69 RBI. Nice. And a 0.6 foar. Not great, right? Not great. A 726 OPS. It was a down season for sure for JD with the New York Mets. However, if you look at some of the underlying stats for J.D. Martinez,
Starting point is 00:04:00 they actually look pretty good, Derek, to the point where, his underlying metrics from 2023 with the Dodgers when he was so good and everyone was on board with bringing him in to be the Diamondbacks full-time DH, those underlying numbers did not change very much going into 2024. If we look at JD's baseball savant page from the 2024 season, there are some pretty, some pretty impressive numbers. I think this is, I believe it is the other one. Um, yeah, we'll figure, we'll, we'll figure out exactly which baseball Savon page belongs to which
Starting point is 00:04:40 play. This is another player we're going to get to a little bit later. Uh, but yes, J.D. Martinez, his underlying metrics were, were still very strong in 2024. Um, and you look at those numbers from, uh, the previous season. Again, there is not a, not a substantial difference there whatsoever. So, uh, there is, there is valid reason to do this, Derek. I was going to say, even if, even if the surface numbers do not, uh, do not look all that
Starting point is 00:05:03 great. baseball savant was a little red for his season that he had last year uh splits splits uh it was pretty good against left-handed pitching right-handed pitching was essentially his his weakness in twenty twenty four right jesse but they the diamondbacks could bring him back in some sort of capacity or bring him i guess bring him back yes bring him back to the diamond backs uh in some sort of capacity in a platoon like they did with jock peterson last year yeah the tricky thing with jd is that he bats right-handed so he is going to have the platoon advantage much less often than Jock Peterson, right?
Starting point is 00:05:38 J.D. in 2024, if you look at his splits, he had an 836 OPS against lefties. So still quite good on that front, a 683 OPS against righties. And obviously, most pitchers, last I checked, throw right-handed. So if you're in a situation where you got a 683 OPS against righties, that doesn't feel great if you're talking about a full-time player. However, if you look at the underlying numbers, once again, he had a 322 X-WOBA against Ritey's, a 427 X-WOva against Lefties. So this is a player who absolutely went off, according to the underlying stats against lefties,
Starting point is 00:06:17 and against Ritees was probably better than that 683 OPS would indicate close to a league average hitter against Ritey's, nothing spectacular. But yes, looking at what J.D. would bring to this team, it's not really a match with what Jock Peterson brought you because Jock destroys right-handed pitching, right? And most pitchers are that. So, J.D., you really like the idea of having him face lefties in the middle of your lineup. But if you're playing him against Ritees at this stage in his career, I don't know if you want to hit him third or fourth in your lineup.
Starting point is 00:06:50 You probably want to have him hitting sixth or seventh, or maybe you want him to just be a short side platoon bat and have someone else taking the majority of those at bats against Ritees. Which in that case, it might not be cost effective to bring him on for that limited amount of plate appearances, right? But you also have that we, the fact we were having the same conversation in a way about Jock Peterson last off season. And then Jock Peterson went on to have the 2024 that he had. In fact, there's some eerie comparisons here when you do a side-by-side comparison to Jock Peterson's 2023 season versus J.D. Martinez, 24 season. I think we have the graphic for that because these guys were very, very comparable in regards to, those, you know, what they did in 20203 and 2024.
Starting point is 00:07:36 I think it's easy to, it's easy to forget at this point that Jock Peterson going into 2024 did not actually have a very good season with the Giants. There's a reason that people were not all that excited about the idea of Jock Peterson going into 2024. But as you see here, this is Jock Peterson's 2023 season with the Giants compared to the year that J.D. Martinez just had with the Mets. pretty similar numbers Derek JD 235-320406 slash line
Starting point is 00:08:06 Jock Peterson with the Giants in 2023 233, 348-416 you see the underlying numbers here and ex-wova of 366 for Jock Peterson I think that's a big reason why the Diamondbacks wanted to bring him in was those underlying metrics were actually quite strong and it's similar with J.D. Martinez
Starting point is 00:08:26 351 that is not quite what Jocs was in in 2023, but still well above league average. So you're setting yourself up to be paying J.D. Martinez in a by-low situation, whereas if the Diamondbacks had made the move last off season, I know he didn't wind up getting a ton of money from the Mets, not as much money as we expected from the outset. But you're not going to have to pay the premium that you did last year because he was coming off such a good season. Well, the one thing here is that you can maybe hypothetically see a world where J.D. Martinez has that kind of improvement with the Diamondbacks in 2025 that we saw Jack Peterson have in 2024.
Starting point is 00:09:12 You can't assume that. But, you know, there's a chance that here at Chase Field in a stadium that he absolutely tore the cover off the ball, we could see him have improvements there offensively. And, you know, I mean, the big thing here is, is that what are you going to get out of J.D. Martinez at this age and how much is it going to cost? Because if it's, like you said, if it's a by-low situation, it definitely makes sense. And there's some holes he could fill. It's just definitely feels like he's not going to be a everyday starter. You know, he's going to play a lot of DH. But even then, he's got, you might not get that many at bat. So you don't necessarily want to pay a ton for a backup, even if that comes. cost is, you know, is less than it was last year or less than it, it would be for J.D. Martinez typically. I also have to ask if J.D. Martinez even still wants to play the game in 2025, Jesse. Because it's not to say that his, like there's a, there's cause for alarm. But when asked about coming back by S&Y, J.D. Martinez said the following. He said, if something happens, it happens. If something doesn't, it doesn't, which is right.
Starting point is 00:10:23 A very, you know, lackadaisical answer. But he did say, I'm not going to come back because I'm begging to come back. I'm going to come back because it makes sense. And obviously he means makes sense to himself, makes sense to the team. But, I mean, also it does sound like a guy that's kind of at the end of his career. And at this point can kind of go one way or another. I don't know if motivation wise, that's the best kind of guy that you want to bring on to your team. He just doesn't sound like he's that.
Starting point is 00:10:53 into playing the game of baseball any longer. Yeah, I mean, you know, those comments were made, I think, immediately after the Mets were eliminated, which is in that moment, the last thing that's on your mind is what you're doing the next year, right? So I'm not reading too much into that. I don't think that if a team signs J.D. Martinez, they need to be concerned about a guy who doesn't really have his heart in it anymore.
Starting point is 00:11:18 Right. Well, and this is about the New York Mets, too, right? Like this is not necessarily about him coming back to the game of baseball as a whole. Yeah, yeah. It's, I think, I think he was talking about coming back to baseball as a whole. But I don't, I, again, I'm just, I'm hesitant to read too much into comments that he made immediately after being eliminated from the postseason. The other thing that I will, that I will say on this is that, uh, I do think that there's going to be a team that wants J.D. Martinez to come back. I mean, if what he's looking for, what he said there was not that he's not interested in coming back.
Starting point is 00:11:55 It was that he wants a team to want him to come back. He's not going to try to force it. And if you're the Diamondbacks or I think a number of other teams around the league, you want J.D. Martinez to come back. I don't think that's really going to be a question. Yeah. You know, is he going to get $10 million in free agency? I think probably not at this stage in his career. I don't know how much the money is playing a factor in his decision at this point.
Starting point is 00:12:20 But yeah, if the Diamondbacks can get J.D. Martinez on, you know, maybe a Randall Gritchick-esque-esque contract, probably I don't see a reason to have a mutual option for a second year as there was in the Grishick deal for, but something like one year and a few million dollars where J.D. Martinez can just come in and destroy left-handed pitching for you and face some righties as well. I think that could make sense, not just for the Diamondbacks, but for other teams as well. I think the opportunity is probably going to be there for him. But, you know, maybe over the course of the off season, he's reconsidered. And he's decided that he wants to spend time, more time with his family. I think he just had a baby here in the last year. So, you know, all of those things will come into play. But I'm not too concerned about J.D. just having no interested teams.
Starting point is 00:13:16 I don't think that's a realistic scenario. He was actually not to, he was, he was asked both about what his next plan was in regards to the Mets and his baseball future, Jesse. And his actual answer was that he intends on going into pickleball. So that's, that's where J.D. Martinez's future really lands. But he did say that in regards to New York, New York, these guys are great. I had a great time here. How could you not want to come back after the year we had? And like, yeah, it's exciting.
Starting point is 00:13:47 And I think you're right. Like some of this answer probably has to do with, you know, with being eliminated from playoffs. I think some of the answer has to do with Martinez has done everything in baseball that you can do, right? Like there comes a point when you're set financially. And I don't know if you need to continue to play a game that you feel like at this point is kind of, your love might not be the same for, you know, going forward when you could be doing other things, you know, with your life at that point. And that's one thing that's understandable. I also agree with Tim, Tim's comment here.
Starting point is 00:14:19 He says we have to stop with the old free agent stop gaps, go young or acquire via trades. Like, I do agree with that. But at the same time, I think that there's ways that older players, older veterans can have a tremendous amount of value just as far as what they cost versus what they can bring to the team. And I do think that a team of young players like the Diamondbacks, they need that, they need that experience. They need guys that can help them make adjustments and do things that they've seen throughout their career that can help. make our young players even better. And I don't really think there's any better example of that than, you know, Jock Peterson and Jake McCarthy's relationship last year.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Can we show a J.D.'s baseball savant page? I think we got them. We got them figured out. This is, this is pretty good stuff, Derek. It's kind of the anti- Justin Turner page. Exactly. That's exactly what I was going to say.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Yeah, like a 14.9% barrel rate is really impressive. There is still a lot of power to be had here. And even you look at some of the, some of the blue stuff at the bottom there. He actually chased less out of the zone in 2024. He struck out less this year. He walked more than he did in 2023 with the Dodgers. So again, the underlying numbers here are pretty promising. And that's why I think J.D. Martinez really does have a realistic chance to, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:39 find another team that wants to have him in 2025. From the Diamondbacks perspective, though, I do have some questions about whether. it will ultimately make sense. Are you willing to commit to J.D. Martinez as a full-time DH? If you're not willing to commit to that, then it's a bit of a hard sell because, as Cam pointed out in the chat, if you're bringing in a short side platoon at DH, it'd be nice if that player had some ability to help you in the field. And there are guys like that available.
Starting point is 00:16:08 Right. Randall Gritchick being one of them, obviously this year, Marcana, someone we discussed on the show yesterday, has some positional utility. J.D. Martinez at this point in his career, I just don't think you can run him out there in the corner outfield or, you know, try to get him to play first base or anything like that. And that's ultimately why I don't think this will make sense for the diamond backs, even if it does make some sense. But it feels like they would be likely to go a different direction. As Elise said back up there in the chat, really what it comes down to do with J.D. Martinez is that he wants you to want him. He needs you to want him. And that's the song lyric, Jesse. not going to get I we got to go out of here before we get DMCA it anyway I don't think I'm allowed to sing that song without that happening but we do have more potential I guess I don't want to call it bargain hunting players for the Diamondbacks to add but other guys that they might be able to add during this offseason
Starting point is 00:17:04 that would be a good fit and isn't going to break their budget we will talk about that on the other side of this break of course don't you guys go anywhere we will be right back said it before but 2025 is right around the corner and it is a great time for you to do that to kick off the year with some improvements to your home and you can do so with Empire Today. They'll help you get where you're going, unless it's Johnny Venerable. Don't listen to him at all, unless you like losing money. All right, Jesse. Speaking of losing money, I know the Diamondbacks don't have a lot of it to spend this offseason,
Starting point is 00:19:19 but they do still have to fill, I mean, some roles of guys that helped make this team what it was in 2024, that they're losing this off season. So what else you got for us? Who can the Diamondbacks bring back to kind of help fill some of these spots left by guys like Randall Gritchick and Jack Peterson? Yeah, we're going to go a bit of a different direction here. I guess this is a guy who would DH for the Diamondback to Fair amount, but he also plays the outfield quite a bit as well. Michael Conforto, who spent the 2024 season with the San Francisco Giants.
Starting point is 00:19:55 If we look at his stats for the 2024 season, not going to blow you away, but not too shabby either, a 237, 309, 450 slash sign 20 homer 66 RBI, 1.3 wins above replacement. Conforto for a number of years, Derek, has been a, a left-handed hitter who certainly is best against righties, someone you want to protect from left-handed pitchers as much as you can. But in 2024, that script flipped very dramatically. He had an 886 OPS against lefties in 2024 compared to a 723 mark against righties.
Starting point is 00:20:31 So do with that what you will, I suppose. It makes him kind of a hard player to evaluate, but also an intriguing one at the same time because maybe this is a guy you can be a weapon against both lefties and righties. Well, he's been playing in San Francisco. We know that's not a super hitter-friendly park. We also know he missed the entire 2022 season due to injury. So, I mean, he's not, he doesn't have the age or the miles on him as some of the other, you know, players that we've discussed. He's still only 31 years old.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Yeah. Still has plenty left in the tank. Most likely would require at least a two-year deal, I'm guessing, to get, you know, something of some. Or is he under contract? I miss that part. Yeah, he would be a, he'd be a free agent target for the damage.
Starting point is 00:21:16 I'm guessing he's going to want at least, you know, more than one year at this point in his career. But I mean, again, he's versatile and that's one thing you were talking about with J.D. Martinez that he lacks, is that versatility to not only play DH,
Starting point is 00:21:27 but provide them with that outfielder at times that they're going to need in certain situational matchups. Not to mention he could, you know, again, I feel like I'm beating this drum entirely too much, but he could be like,
Starting point is 00:21:39 Gritchick and Peterson and in the fact that we could see his offensive numbers pick up quite a bit here with Arizona, especially playing kind of as a part-time D.H. Part-time outfielder. Sure, yeah. I mean, theoretically, you feel like you're setting yourself up best with Conforto if he's facing right-handed pitching primarily, which on that level, you might be wondering, like, why would the Diamondback sign another left-handed hitting outfielder? Because they do have, they do have a decent collection of those. plenty of those. However, I will say, first of all, that Michael Conforto is not a great defensive outfielder. He can hold his own out there, but he's not great.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Zero defensive runs saved minus four outs above average in 2024. Jakes. Spent, I think he DH for 21 games and then was in left field for his other games in 2024. However, if the Diamondbacks were to do a thing, which we've discussed quite a bit this offseason, which is trade either in Alec Thomas or a Jake McCarthy, then suddenly you don't hate the idea of having a left-handed hitter who's maybe spending most of his time at DH, but also can step into the outfields when you have a need there.
Starting point is 00:22:48 And that is something that Michael Conforto could absolutely do. Well, we have his baseball savant page here ready to go. And I mean, again, when you take a look at some of the other options that we've talked about this week, especially for that kind of mixed DH role and maybe some sort of other positional, you know, a role. He has some pretty, a lot of red, pretty page, Jesse, a lot of red on here.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Yeah, actually pretty similar to J.D. Martinez's baseball savant page. It was hard for us to figure out which was which for a second there because they look almost identical. Yeah, Conforto, his expected batting average 257, which is 20 points higher than his actual batting average. His expected slug was 479. That's about 30 points higher than where it was in 2024. So as you said earlier, Conforto playing in San Francisco, like that doesn't, that doesn't do you any favors from an offense standpoint.
Starting point is 00:23:41 So this is a guy I think has a chance to be an above average hitter, certainly against righties, maybe against lefties as well. If you believe what he, what he did in 2024 is sustainable. And that player could have a decent amount of value for the Diamondbacks in 2025. Again, as someone who is probably deaching a decent amount of the time, sort of your job. Sock Peterson replacement, but also is stepping in in the outfield as well, a position that he plays well enough, sort of like Randall Gritchick, where you can put him out there and feel okay about it. What is it going to cost? Is he going to potentially cost the Diamondbacks more than, I guess, his worth could potentially be?
Starting point is 00:24:23 Yeah. So over on fan graphs, their crowdsource estimate puts him at just a one-year deal for $12 million. So pretty similar to Jock Peterson, right? The Diamondbacks just paid Jock Peterson $12.5 million for one year if you include the buyout that he's owed for this season. So yeah, a similar price tag there. And Conforto certainly gives you more defensively. If you run Conforto out there in a corner outfield spot, you feel a heck of a lot better
Starting point is 00:24:53 about him than Jack Peterson, who we never saw play in the field during the regular season. And we did see him play in the field in spring training a little bit, but it wasn't, it wasn't pretty Derek. I'm not surprised that the Diamond Vax opted not to have him play play in the field during the season. You just brought back the memories of us watching him at that point and thinking potentially what a disaster, the signing of Jack Peterson was going to be. And it's hilarious now considering the season he had to think about all that, right? I was looking at, so I did a fan survey, as I often do around here, prior to the start of the 2024 season and the Diamondbacks didn't sign Jock Peterson until pretty late in the game. And so in that survey, I asked people what they thought of the jock signing.
Starting point is 00:25:44 I think B was the was the most common grade. Not many people were super in love with it, but most people were okay with it. Going back to our J.D. Martinez conversation, though, I thought it was very interesting that 61% of people in that survey that I did said that J.D. Martinez was the free agent hitter that they wanted the most. Jock Peterson received 2.1% of the votes. So it's crazy how the guy that you really want, right, is not always the guy who has actually the best season. And that was that was very much the case this year. Who knows? Maybe everyone wants Jack Peterson back now, right? But as we've said, there is some risk in in bringing Jock back.
Starting point is 00:26:28 He hasn't been the player he was in 2024, really ever before. It's the best season he's ever had in his career. If you pay, you know, two years, 30 million or whatever it is, there's some risk that maybe you get a different version of him
Starting point is 00:26:42 in these next two seasons. I think there's other things about Jock that surprised me more than how good his season was. And that takes me back to the Jake McCarthy comment I made earlier. Like, just the fact that Jock quietly became a mentor for these guys. And he's not like a very vocal leader. It doesn't seem like at least.
Starting point is 00:26:59 And it doesn't seem like he's the kind of guy that offers too much unsolicited advice to his teammates. But you heard a lot of really, really nice things about Jock from his teammates and how much they felt he contributed to the team beyond just what he did at the dish. So I mean, that, I think that was very unexpected as well. And again, going back to my comment earlier, it's the reason why the Diamondbacks need to continue to bring in guys with experience to help these younger players, you know, blossom. and continue to grow in their careers as well and do it in a way where hopefully it can be a little faster based on the experience and the knowledge that they're providing them with. But I do think that the Diamondbacks definitely aren't a position where like you can't really afford based on depth to really have a guy out there like J.D.
Starting point is 00:27:45 as much as I personally would want that because of the needs, right? And we saw last year how injuries kind of held this team back. most of those injuries seem to be in the infield and to be to pitchers, but it could happen at any time and then require the Diamondbacks to need that versatility. It's the reason why Conforto makes a lot of sense, but just depends on what it's going to cost this team. That backs still have a, you know, like their budget right now, I mean, I still feel like they're going to have more money to spend than we're suggesting with some of these kind of like lower end, you know, kind of like low budget, low cost options. the bargain shopping phase of our analysis. We're unnecessarily saying, no, you can't have McDonald's. I'm going to fix you a hamburger at home.
Starting point is 00:28:33 When we have the money to go get fast food, we just don't want to do that right now. Right. So that's where we're at. I think with Conforto where I ultimately stand is if you still have all of the left-handed hitting outfielders that you do right now, it probably doesn't make sense to add another one because part of the price tag for Conforto is that he can't. still play in the field and do it reasonably well. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:57 I just don't think it's worth the diamondbacks paying that premium to get someone who can play in the field if they've already got, you know, three left-handed hitting outfielders on the roster. However, as I said earlier, if you do trade a Jake or an Alec, I think the diamondbacks would would maybe want to backfill that spot, at least have someone else on the roster who can fill a need there if one of those guys gets hurt or whatnot. You know, there's some uncertainty. If you're keeping Alec Thomas, like what is he going to?
Starting point is 00:29:24 look like offensively. You're going to want to have some other options. And I think Conforto could be a nice piece to fill that need, that potential need, as well as also be a guy that you could just plug in a DH and feel pretty good about there as well. Gabriel Ferrer keeps bringing up that the Diamondbacks could solve all of their needs with just getting Juan Soto. And I don't disagree, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:29:47 I think that that he's right. I think they could do that. Are they going to? Maybe. Maybe. No, they're not. No, they're not. $600 million at least is what it's going to cost for Juan Soto.
Starting point is 00:29:59 And I don't even know if I would want the Diamondbacks to spend that on him. If I'm being honest, like the Diamondbacks just aren't one of those franchises that could recover from that if Juan ends up being a mediocre player for the team he plays for. Interesting thing I read is that I think from our friend Emily Walden, she said that Juan Soto is not a generational player. Shohei Otani is. Do you agree with that? Oh, that's fascinating. A generational, people throw around the phrase generational player. They really do.
Starting point is 00:30:31 I don't really know what that means. I mean, if the meaning of a generational player is truly that there's only one per generation, then Shohei Otani has to be the guy for this particular generation, right? He's the unicorn for sure. So, yeah, I'd have to think about that for a while. But I don't think the Diamondbacks are going to get Juan Soto, Derek. No? as much as we would love to do a full podcast about Juan Soto and what he would bring to this Diamondbacks lineup.
Starting point is 00:31:00 If the Diamondbacks acquired Juan Soto, we would become a Juan Soto podcast. Sorry, you Minlin. We are no longer a U. U.N. Lin podcast. We are now a Wond Soto podcast. Why not both? Why not both? I mean, I don't have.
Starting point is 00:31:15 I don't have time for both. Shane, get out of here. We have to devote all of our time for one of those guys. Well, we, of course, have a lot more to talk about, I guess I should say. I don't know if that's true, but we do have, because it is the opposite. It's the opposite and the Diamondbacks haven't made any moves. We got some bangers coming up, including an absolutely ludicrous trade that I don't think anybody watching this show will approve of or want to make.
Starting point is 00:31:41 But it's floating out there and we'll talk about it on the other side of this break. So don't you guys go anywhere? We will be right back. Of course, there's so much. sports going on. It's not our sport, but there's lots of sports going on. If you want to attend those sports, game time is the way to do so. Check that out now at Sanderson Ford. All right, Jesse, well, when I say that there is a ludicrous trade floating out there, I was, it is ludicrous trade season.
Starting point is 00:34:13 It is ludicrous. And I was flabbergasted by this one. I've seen some bad trades in my lifetime, but this one might have taken the cake. And maybe I'm just sensitive because this trade included two of the Arizona Diamondbacks biggest stars in Zach Gallen and Kattel Marte. But according to this trade proposed by fancited.com, the Diamondbacks. There's a bit of a mismatch here. I guess there's a trade floating around on baseball trade values.com. And then there's one on fan sided.
Starting point is 00:34:43 And they are slightly. different. They both have the diamond back sending Zach Gallon and Gatel Marte Boston Red Sox. We'll start with the one that's showing on the screen. Tristan Kossis, Willier-A-Bray-U, and Christian Campbell coming back to the Diamondbacks in this deal.
Starting point is 00:35:02 Yeah, I don't know about this one, Derek. No, no. I don't know about this one. Throw this one in the trash, Jesse. Get this one out of my face. Yeah, this one's not great. Yet, according to this website, website, it's, it's comparable value? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, baseball trade values does have that as being like spot on, um, each side getting
Starting point is 00:35:25 exactly the same amount of trade value. Um, I can sort of talk myself into just the top part, like a Zach gallon for Tristan Kossis, I think is kind of interesting. I don't think the Diamondbacks would actually do that. I don't know if the Red Sox would either. It doesn't sound like the Red Sox are really interested in trading costs. and I don't think the Diamondbacks are interested in trading Zach Gallin either. But you can talk yourself into like the Diamondbacks are presumably looking for a first baseman.
Starting point is 00:35:55 And if you can get Tristan Kossis, who I think has a chance to be one of the better first baseman in the league for a while and who has four years of club control remaining, like maybe you trade one year of Zach Gallen for four years of Tristan Kossis. I actually think that that is sort of interesting. Yeah, no, I mean, and I've talked about that, right? We brought up Zach Gallen and the possibility of trading him. And we know that a big part of that would be that. If you can get a controllable player for one year of Zach Gallen, a controllable player you really like, then on paper could be worth at least thinking about.
Starting point is 00:36:27 Especially a guy that fits your needs, fits a positional need that you currently have, and that could match up with the rest of the young core that you have going on. My problem with this trade is Catelle Marte. And like RAA says, as far as I'm concerned, Marte is untouchable. We have we have scoffed at the very idea that if Kattel Marte did not become or did not sign that extension with the Diamondbacks, he would be a free agent right now. And what a huge problem that would be for the Diamondbacks and how much there would be a zero chance of the debacks being able to bring him back.
Starting point is 00:37:00 So as far as Katel Marte and his contract is concerned, there's zero reason to move him. And I don't, I reject any trade idea that even proposes it. gallon is, you know, an absolute star. And I don't want to lose that gallon. The reality of the matter is, though, based on the way that things are progressing, the Diamondbacks are most likely going to lose gallon at the end of 2025. So the trade for Gallon wouldn't be that outrageous, even though, it would be upsetting, I'm sure, to a lot of Diamondbacks fans out there. It would make sense, though, it would be one of those sacrifices for the purpose of making the franchise good, much like they did with the Paul Goldschmidt trade. Did that work out? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:37:42 not. It did not work out. And there's no way that you can convince Diamondbacks fans that the value that they got in the Goldschmidt trade somehow was worth the idea of losing even one year Paul Goldschmidt for the pieces that the Diamondbacks received in return and how those pieces impacted this team and their success going forward. But it is it is something that I'm willing to hear you out on. Right. The gallon for a gallon trade. Just a gallon trade in general. sure but like gabriel ferrera says two future border borderline hall of famers for some decent guys yeah that's kind of what it feels like i mean i mean christian campbell is is one of the top prospects in the sport i haven't done a christian campbell deep dive but uh if you look up some prospect list you will see christian campbell uh certainly show up pretty high on those lists he's listed as the number three prospect in the redstock system but the red sock system is is pretty act right now. So he is one of the better prospects in all of baseball. I don't know exactly what position he's going to land out long term. Maybe Christian Campbell and Willier Abraeu, like that two,
Starting point is 00:38:52 those two guys for Cattel Marte, maybe that is like fair on paper. I guess you could make that argument. But the diamond backs, it just makes absolutely no sense whatsoever for them to trade Catel Marte at this stage. And even the gallon for Cossus thing, like it's interesting, but Kossis is not coming off a particularly good season. He missed about four months with injury. He is somehow about the slowest player in the sport. His sprint speed is in the first percentile and he's 24 years old, which is, I mean, not like, I don't want to say that your speed as a first baseman is like an important factor.
Starting point is 00:39:29 But to be in the first percent pile of 24 is a little alarming. I was much faster 24 than I am at 43, Jesse. That's for sure. Yeah. You don't expect that number to go up over time. Exactly. So, yeah, all of that trade is, is pretty outrageous. Well, and I mean, we have this other one, too. If we could throw that graphic up there, it's a very similar trade.
Starting point is 00:39:49 And it seems like the Boston Red Sox very much want to tell Marte and Zach Gallen. This one instead. Also the old logo. Also the old logo, yes. Come on. Get with the time, you guys. The Marcello Mayor, MLB Pipelines, number seven overall prospect for, is that for the Red or is that overall in general? I think that's overall.
Starting point is 00:40:12 Okay. Yeah, Marcelo Mayor is, he and Jordan Lawler have been compared for a number of years. They were both selected in that same draft, both shortstop prospects. So, yeah, Marcelo Mayor is a legit prospect and so is Kyle Teal.
Starting point is 00:40:25 What I don't like about this is that honestly, the pieces of the Diamondbacks are receiving back in this trade doesn't even make a whole lot of sense. I mean, they're receiving Kyle Teal back, catcher. They're receiving shortstop Marcelo Mayer, and they're receiving again right fielder willier a bray you yeah this this one makes absolutely no sense i want to punch a computer monitor after reading that one jessie i believe the fan the fan
Starting point is 00:40:51 sided headline i got this one let me get this one the fan sided headline jesse was this red sox diamondbacks trade is too perfect to come true for who the red socks because yes it is it absolutely is Oh, God. What are we even doing here? I mean, the Diamondbacks already have a catcher that they're going to have on their team for quite some time. So as great of a prospect as Kyle Teal is, and he is a great prospect. For sure. I don't really know why the Diamondbacks are trying to acquire one of the best young catchers in the game when they already have one.
Starting point is 00:41:26 And then again, Marcelo Mayer and Jordan Lawler. I mean, those guys have been on sort of the same trajectory through the miners ever since they were drafted. the diamond backs already have Jordan Lawler. I mean, not to say that you can have too many great middle infield prospects. But yeah, that doesn't make any sense. And then even William Brayew, like he's a really good young player coming off a nice season with the Red Sox, three and a half wins above replacement over on baseball reference. But why are the Diamondbacks acquiring a corner outfielder? It just doesn't.
Starting point is 00:42:02 None of this makes any sense for the Diamondbacks. whatsoever. I think I think Van Sided is washed. But then again, also the Rangers went up and picked up Kyle Egoscioka and they already had Jonah Heim. So people have done crazier things with catcher. That's true. But Jonah Heim just had a 600 OPS. That's kind of looked like a shell of himself. That's fair. Compared to the year prior, Gabriel Moreno spent some time on the injured list in 2024 just as he did the year prior. But when he was on the field, Gabriel Moreno was pretty good. Everything that you expected. him to be so i don't see i don't think it makes any sense for the diamondbacks to pay a premium to acquire one of the best young catchers in the sport when again they they already have that uh in gabriel marino uh ryan cardona wants to know where that was that trade from i don't even feel like we should acknowledge the depth of hell yeah it's pretty much a bad place a bad bad place uh well we got uh some masked singer news because that's where we're at here in the middle of the offseason on the other side of this break. So if you're not caught, I'm going to tell you this right now. I'm going to do a
Starting point is 00:43:07 better job than they do on the commercials than the local news does. If you're not caught up on the mass singer, don't watch this last segment because we're going to blow at least one surprise. But if you're curious and you want to know which former Arizona Diamondback player was in fact a member or one of the singers unmasked, stick around. We'll talk about it on the other side of this break. Well, we know that J.D. Martinez is going to go off and become the world class pickleball player that he should be. But you can be that too if you go check out chicken and pickle. Now is a great time to do so. Starting point is 00:45:31 They did that just recently with Wrigleyfield was turned into a football stadium for a brief day, right? So that's fun. That seems really egregious. Turning, turning Rigglyfield in anything under than a baseball. It has to be baseball there. It has to be. You're not wrong about that. Well, we have more things that don't belong in other worlds because on the latest episode of the Masked Singer, which was their Thanksgiving episode of that show, one of their characters, Sherlock Hound.
Starting point is 00:46:01 seen here on the screen. One of my favorites, to be honest, because mostly because of the person who was Sherlock Hound and the way he played Sherlock Hound, the man was dedicated to the character. He chased his tail on stage, Jesse. He did all sorts of adorable dog things.
Starting point is 00:46:17 He would randomly stop and scratch his ear. I loved it. And of course, I was excited to find out who the person under the mask was. Turned out that the person under the mask was former Arizona Diamondback pitcher Bronson O'Royo. And I got to say, I've watched that show for entirely too long. I'll be the first to say, it's not a good
Starting point is 00:46:36 program. I have no idea why I still watch it. But it's because I enjoy the reveals and the reveal Bronson Royal blew me away because I honestly thought he was a really good singer. Barry Zito was what they called his ambassador. So they had Barry Zito kind of introduce him at the beginning. They have clue packages and they have things that came out. There was some stuff definitely that linked him and allowed Robin Thick to guess who he was before he was unmasked. That was fairly impressive. I think his red beads from the Boston Red Sox time was hanging on a mirror. He also had a record with like a diamond on it.
Starting point is 00:47:11 There was a couple other things. But when all was said and done, I guess he made it to the semifinals before being eliminated. The man has a great voice. And it seemed like a subject of his appearance was the fact that Robin Thick who did guess, He is a Boston Red Sox fan. I'll preface this. Robin Thick is a Boston Red Sox fan. And he did say that Bronson Arroyo was a baseball legend, which I know our friends at the Cespite's family barbecue picked apart and argued about whether or not Bronson Royale is a baseball legend.
Starting point is 00:47:42 He was introduced as World Series champion, which fact, right? I can't argue with that. World Series champion and baseball legend Bronson Arroyo. And I don't know if that's. Well, here, let's do the thing we were doing earlier. What does legend mean? Because what does generational mean? Generational could mean once in a generational or could be could mean like one of the
Starting point is 00:48:05 greatest of the generation. What does legend mean? Legend I see, see legend is definitely, especially when you say, when I think of legend, I think of Hall of Fame. Okay. Is Bronson, a Royal Hall of Famer? No. Absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:48:16 No. So he's not a legend. No. I will say I look at it differently. I think of legend as being subjective to you and your fan base and do your particular team, right? And I think the reason why a Boston Red Sox fan, like Robin Thick, would use legend, is because Batman helped the Boston Red Sox win a World Series, a team that most Boston
Starting point is 00:48:38 Red Sox fans never thought they would see win a World Series. Wouldn't that, wouldn't that season be legendary for him, though? He had a legendary season. Does that make him a legend? Yeah, I know. I get what you're saying, though. Yeah, right. Because Quinn Richardson, not a great son, but a legendary son for me because I loved him.
Starting point is 00:48:53 I think I think of Seth Beer as being a legendary Diamondback. That was a legendary game. He's a he's forever cemented as a legend in my mind because of the fact that he hit a walkoff home run essentially as a rookie on national beer day and his last name was beer. You'll never not convince me the man isn't a legend. I don't know exactly what legend means, Derek, but a league average innings eater for 2,500 innings. Wow. I don't know if that's quite. I'm just sneaking facts here.
Starting point is 00:49:28 I had to call you a segment eater, Jesse. He had a career 101 ERA plus. He was basically a league average pitcher. Not to say that that profile doesn't have a lot of value though, right? If you can just eat innings, I mean, we just saw Frankie Montas get two years and $34 million after having a 484 ERA, right? So these types of players are absolutely valuable in 2006. Bronson Arroyo, I will say, was very, very good. He had a 329 ERA that season was an All-Star, got down-ballot MVP votes.
Starting point is 00:50:02 The Diamond Vax, Derek, were, of course, enamored by Bronson Arroyo as well. They wanted some stability in their starting rotation. They wanted a guy who, you know, maybe his top-end talent was not elite, but someone that you just knew you could pencil in for 32 or 33 starts. and close to 200 innings. And of course, Bronson Arroyo blew out his elbow. 14 starts into his Diamondbacks career. And they shortly thereafter moved him in a very controversial trade in which they offloaded
Starting point is 00:50:38 one of their top prospects simply to get off of the Bronson Arroyo contract. So his Diamondbacks career, not. Definitely not legendary. Not a Diamondbacks legend. But when you help end the. Curse of the Benbino, Jesse. Sure. You're going to always be considered a legend in Boston Red Sox fans' minds.
Starting point is 00:50:59 Jesse. Jesse Friedman, Network average segment eater. Yeah. Yeah. Network average. Network average. Just above network average. Yeah, it was a 101, ERA plus.
Starting point is 00:51:12 So I should be a little above. Well, speaking of just above average now, Alex Bregman was at the Sun's game last night. He was there with his. son in attendance either him or his son got booed i'm not sure which one of them definitely his kid it was his kid definitely got booed his day one of my favorite things to do at NFL games is to boo the kickoff kid like little little Robbie from chandler you suck robbie uh yeah the definitely not a warm reception for alec brayman um Alex breakman but uh jesse any do i need to make any kind of
Starting point is 00:51:52 controversial leaps here of of what he's doing here in phoenix why he's at a son's game does this mean that alex bregman is the next member of the arizona diamondbacks i think it surely does he's going to move to first base isn't he i think it clearly means that he's going to become an arizona diamond back uh yeah i'm not totally sure i want to say that alix bregman lives in in Arizona in the off season. I believe that is the case. I will say that Chandler Rome, a great beat writer for the athletic covering the Astros,
Starting point is 00:52:29 I did an episode of On the Record with him prior to the Diamondbacks Astros series. And Chandler Rome seemed very convinced that the Diamondbacks were a potential landing spot for Alex Bregman. Why? I think in his mind, the diamond, I mean, this was in the middle of the season
Starting point is 00:52:46 when picking up Gino Swartz, Juarez's club option was maybe not like a given as it sort of became toward the end of the season. Since the Diamondbacks wound up bringing back Gino, I don't really see a path for them to bringing in Alex Bregman. I will say, though, the Diamondbacks did show interest at the very least in Zander Bogart's a couple off seasons ago at a time where they also didn't really have like a clear place for him to play necessarily. at least shortstop was not was not open for them
Starting point is 00:53:18 so yeah I mean I don't I'm not expecting the diamond backs to go after Alex Breckman I think he was probably just at this son's game enjoying a night with his kid but yeah what about this his kid's gonna be a deback okay I'm on board okay there we go you gotta start scouting these children out of younger oh no he's playing he's gonna get called up I think he's projected 2028 yeah that sounds about right
Starting point is 00:53:41 that sounds about right well I mean I mean it's depending on you know how how he hits in reno for sure let's not just assume he's going to go up there and mash but i mean i guess we did just talk about nolan arnato and alec bohm as potential diamond backs targets like scenarios where somebody moves to first base the price tag with alice regman is just so high that uh i think you i think you have to play him at third and if you're doing that then you're moving gno to first which we've discussed in the past i just don't think it's something that diamondbacks would realistically consider Gino has never played first base professionally in the majors or the minors. I just don't see it happening. Don't worry, Jesse. The Mariners will sign them, move him over
Starting point is 00:54:22 to second base. He'll hit 190. And then that does seem possible. Yeah. And then that's how he becomes a diamond back. That's what happens with that. Well, that's all we got. I know that, of course, this is, Jesse is going to be out at the winter meetings next week. So this is, this is the end for us. We got to have something next week jesse you got to bring us some news back from the winter meeting i might disappoint you derrick i don't i don't know i don't want to make threats but if you don't i just wouldn't come back from dll ls can house you there they'll they'll make sure that you uh you stay fed and watered for the most part i know that's my job to do but well last year i think you made that same threat when it was in nashville and i was like sure i'll just say i'm like you're like i sure you're
Starting point is 00:55:12 Before that, it was in San Diego. And I was like, yeah, I have no problem staying in San Diego indefinitely and letting you do my job. And you never got to try her Tato Barbecue when we were there last time. So I imagine that this might not be the worst scenario there. There's a six flag very close to all of that stuff. I have a feeling you'd have entirely too much fun. Okay. I take it back.
Starting point is 00:55:33 You have to come back because we have to talk more about potential targets. Can we interest you tomorrow and won Anthony Santander? Well, we're talking about it because the Diamondbacks, of course, have not made any moves yet. And they're forcing us to talk about it. We're also going to talk about a lot of fun stuff on another throwback Thursday episode because a lot of, a lot of D-backs history, a lot of significant moments in D-Backs history on December 4th and December 5th. So we will dive into that tomorrow. And it's kind of the reason why we've been patiently waiting for the Diamondbacks to do something before the winter meetings because historically they kind of have. Like this week has kind of always popped off for them.
Starting point is 00:56:12 So we are going to cover all of that tomorrow on another throwback Thursday edition of this podcast. And we're going to talk some Mariners Ball. See, he's not even, he can't even be like, huh, Derek, you're just joking. No, he knows because he's been here when the camera on top. Yeah, I mean, Archie, as I've said in the past few days on this show, Archie is very much unplugged, I would say, in general, even when he is on camera. Oh, yeah.
