PHNX Arizona Diamondbacks Podcast - Is Jordan Montgomery Signing The BIGGEST Disappointment for Diamondbacks This Season?

Episode Date: June 6, 2024

While it was the longest game of the season for the Diamondbacks, it was another short outing for starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery in the series finale loss to the Giants. Has the signing of Montgom...ery already become one of the franchise’s worst starting pitching acquisitions? We discuss the numbers from the series win, who the D-backs should be sending to the All-Star game, and how much trouble the Snakes avoid by missing Dylan Cease in their four-game series with the Padres. An ALLCITY Network ProductionSUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: https://bit.ly/phnx_youtubeALL THINGS PHNX: http://linktr.ee/phnxsports PHNX Events: Get your tickets to PHNX events and takeovers here: https://gophnx.com/events/Factor Mealkits: Use code PHNXDBACKS50 to get 50% OFF your first Factor box and free wellness shots for life with any active subscription at https://factormeals.com/phnxdbacks50Desert Financial Credit Union: Open a free checking account online with Desert Financial Credit Union and get $200 in bonuses https://www.desertfinancial.com/200Gametime: Download the Gametime app, create an account, and use code PHNX for $20 off your first purchase. Starting point is 00:00:07 Hit him with the remix, I guess, there. I mean, we did win the series so we can play a little bit of the good music. I don't know if I'll be perfect for a series all season. No, it's fine. We don't expect you to be, nor will the Diamondbacks be. But of course, welcome in to the PHNX D-Backs podcast right here on PHNX. Of course, we're coming to you live from Studio K, presented by our friends at Circle K. Head over to any Circle K Arizona location where you can get any size polar pop or frostor for just 79 cents, now through September 3rd.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Well, the Arizona Diamondbacks dropped the series finale to the San Francisco Giants by a count of nine to three. And of course, the big topic is how bad Jordan Montgomery once again was for this team. Tori Lavallo made some interesting lineup choices today, choosing to sit both Cattell Marte and Christian Walker in this game. His reasons were that the team is basically in the middle of a 13 game stretch without a day off. and basically he emphasized the importance of this upcoming series with the San Diego Padres and saying that he really wanted to try to not give Christian Orchitel a day off during that series. He did say he wrestled with the concept a lot, but he thought that Paveen and Blaze could handle the workload.
Starting point is 00:01:25 And let's be honest, today, Blaze might have made one mistake on the base path defensively. They're kind of stepping off of second base a little bit early. but Pavin contributed once again. He had his banana and he hit a home run and so far it didn't look like that lineup change was the big problem with today's game. The big problem today was Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery gave the Diamondbacks two innings. He gave up seven hits, six earned runs.
Starting point is 00:01:53 He walked three. He struck out one. With what the Diamondbacks have been going through right now with the injuries and the fact that they have so many young guys that right now aren't giving them the length that veteran starters are able to give this team. This is an absolute travesty that Jordan McComery is not what the Diamondbacks expected him to be. He might, in fact, be one of the worst starting pitching acquisitions the franchise has ever made. And that's saying something considering some of the fumbles that this franchise has had. Now, it's still, I guess you could say, it's still early to make that overall decision
Starting point is 00:02:32 on Montgomery. However, he is one start away from a vesting option for his player option for next year or vesting, you know, vestment going forward, which will give him more money next year. And considering the way that his season has gone with the Arizona Diamondbacks, there's a good chance that Montgomery might not have a better option other than staying here with Arizona. When we say, though, that Jordan Montgomery is quickly becoming one of the worst pitching acquisitions in franchise history, we have a tweet we send out that kind of conveys this information, not sure if you saw this or not, but through nine starts as a member of the Diamondbacks. Jordan Montgomery has 46 in a third innings pitch with a 6.80 ERA, 5.6 strikeouts per nine,
Starting point is 00:03:20 3.5 walks per nine, and a opponent batting average of 319. Meanwhile, Madison Bumgardner, through his first nine starts as a Diamondback, 41 and two-thirds innings pitched 6.480 RA, 6.4 strikeouts per 9, 2.8 walks per 9, and a 2.276 batting average for opposing batters. Oh, boy. Damon. Damon, I need you to say something nice or encouraging or just to just make me happy briefly. I don't know. I need to. This is not good. No, it's not good at all. And obviously, all of those stats pretty much are worse than Madison Bumgarner.
Starting point is 00:04:07 But Jacob and I were talking about it a little bit when I got into the office here. And we still think that he'll be decent. Like, he'll figure out eventually. He didn't really have a spring training. You can, you know, cope with that a little bit. That doesn't move you at all. I, you know, I will say that there is something obviously at times to, you know, you can blame on the slow start, right?
Starting point is 00:04:33 You could blame on the weird offseason he had. You might even say that, you know, there's a tremendous amount of disappointment in his camp with the way everything is gone. Maybe even being here in Arizona is a disappointment for him. However, if he is still playing for that contract, if he is still trying to either extend his stay here in Arizona or get the contract that he thought he was going to get this off season,
Starting point is 00:04:58 that's not happening with the way he's playing. pitching. Now, I do believe Jordan Montgomery has the ability to turn things around. When you look at the way, you know, last year went for him, uh, he didn't have a great first half, but he really picked up in the second half. I think we have seen some starts from Jordan Montgomery that show he's a capable starting pitcher and, and is exactly what the diamondbacks were looking for out of him. The fact is, is that he wasn't landing his breaking stuff today. I mean, the amount of misses that he had, like I could see them from the press box. It was very apparent how much he was missing with his off speed stuff. And frankly, his fastball isn't very good. And he had to rely on it
Starting point is 00:05:36 entirely too much. So I think that really the key here is, is that when you watch Jordan Montgomery pitch, it's almost like you need to go over, grab them by the shoulders and just move them over like a half an inch. Like, there you go, buddy. You're now, now throw. Maybe you won't miss on arm's side so often, but it was a frustrating, you know, it's frustrating to watch him struggle because eventually he gets to a point where he does kind of have to abandon his breaking stuff, which is really the only way that he's effective. But today, I mean, games like today in his last outing, they have really just put the diamond backs in a really bad position. I mean, worse than the younger players that they're calling up from the minors to fill in for these guys that are
Starting point is 00:06:23 currently injured and missing. I think that's the worst part about it, right? Like the diamondbacks need some length at some point outside of Brandon fought. Ryan Nelson was able to give them a career best seven and two thirds, but most likely isn't going to be able to go out there and give them that every single, you know, outing. It's just not the way that his pitch arsenal is, is going to allow him to do that. I mean, he could still have those outings, but I'll tell you right now, it's just a huge disappointment. And I think that the thing that sucks, is like everybody needs Jordan Montgomery to be good right now. The team desperately needs him to be good.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Tori desperately needs him to be good to help him save the bullpen arms and to save, you know, this starting rotation to have some sort of, you know, some sort of veteran presence here with all of these young guys, including Brandon Fott, who we often forget is still very young himself. I think the front office needs Jordan Montgomery to be good so that they can validate, you know, they're spending the extra money that they spent to bring him in. But most importantly, going back to what I was saying, Montgomery needs to be good.
Starting point is 00:07:29 And this is one of those things that right now, this is his ninth start, his 10th start. He gets vested at 20 million for next year. And then if he makes more starts for this team, you know, there's more money coming his way. That's great for him for next season if he decides to stay with this team
Starting point is 00:07:46 and take up that player option. And that is looking potential. more and more likely as as the season progresses. However, it's not what he wants, right? He wants to get that big contract at this point in his career when he's at the age that he's at that gives him at least a little bit longer term stability with a team than he has right now with the diamondbacks. You saw it in his like intro press conference, right, where he looked very disappointed
Starting point is 00:08:11 when they were like, oh yeah. You ever think you were going to be here? And he was like, no. Like you could tell he didn't want to be a diamond back necessarily. So I think that as things trend right now, like, yeah, he is probably going to pick up that option for next year. But you're right. He really does not want to pick that up, in my opinion, at least. I mean, he just isn't really going to have any other choice.
Starting point is 00:08:34 No one's going to pay him anything close to that if he keeps pitching like this. Yeah. He got six whiffs on his curve ball today. But again, he only threw eight fast balls. And a lot of them were very bad and they were hit very hard. Jordan Montgomery again. I think that this is one of those situations where it's not like a guy that's, yeah, he's getting paid a lot of money this year,
Starting point is 00:09:00 but this isn't a situation he wants to be in, nor is this the contract that he wants. So he has to figure a way out of it at this point. Hopefully Strom and the team can help him, you know, pitch his way out of it. We have a couple of guys right now that the Diamondbacks have tendered contracts to this offseason that aren't performing, including, you know, a Juanios-Wares. And I don't know how much the Diamondbacks this year
Starting point is 00:09:25 are willing to make those cuts and those sacrifices that they made last year. But we haven't seen over the last 14 months this team shy away from making those tough decisions at times when they do have other guys available. Like Jordan Montgomery, that's not an option really for when it comes to how much he's getting paid. And I doubt it's an option for Gino.
Starting point is 00:09:45 However, again, we talked yesterday about the team might need to pick up some of his contract in order to trade him at the trade deadline and who knows if he's even going to have any value at that point. So so far the additions that the team tried to make during this off-season haven't been that great. But Kevin Newman, eh, Kevin Newman, he's still pretty, like the value picks the Diamond Glock Scott were great.
Starting point is 00:10:11 So like there's some great value in the value picks, but the guys that they spent a lot of money on aren't working out so great. so far. Jock Peterson, another guy we talked today. No, we saw Jorge Soler hit the shit out of a baseball, but looking at Jock Peterson's numbers compared to Jorge Soler, there's another, at least another guy the Diamondbacks picked up this off season that ended up working out for them. And Jock continues to be pretty solid. But right now, the guy, the man of the hour is none other than Pavin Smith. Pave and Smith continues to be the banana man. He continues to push on for the, I guess, chicken tending gang agenda.
Starting point is 00:10:51 And he is our king snake for this game. Pavin Smith, three for four today, one home run, one RBI, one walk. Great day for Pavin. And again, this was the man that stepped in in place of Christian Walker. And you didn't really miss, you know, Christian's offense there. I mean, Pave and Smith definitely filled that role. He also might not have been as good defensively, but we didn't really see him make too many mistakes over there. So overall, I think this game just fell onto the poor pitching here, both
Starting point is 00:11:23 from the starting pitching as well as the bullpen. The bullpen, I mean, actually did do a decent job of keeping things together after Montgomery left. Really just Brandon Hughes allowed those two earned runs or three run runs, but they still gave the dime back seven innings, seven hits, and only allowed three earned when compared to the six earn allowed by Jordan Montgomery. So they, you know, they did their best to keep them in. this game but the diamond backs, Pavin Smith is giving the Diamondbacks some difficult decisions. So is,
Starting point is 00:11:52 you know, Blaze Alexander, of course, I talked earlier there about him missing the bag at second base on that play and having the call reversed after the Giants had it reviewed. But Blaze, his bat right now, still makes it a bit difficult to imagine them sending him down. However, Tori was asked before the game a little bit about Blaze and Kevin Newman. And one of the ways that Tori was a little backed into maybe answering the question we all have was when he was asked about Newman's versatility.
Starting point is 00:12:26 He said that he could play all over the infield and he made it sound like he really could be a backup in a backup role for everyone, including, you know, obviously second base, shortstop, third base, maybe even some first base. it did sound based on Tori's comments like the team might be leaning towards Kevin Newman over Blaze Alexander once Roldo Pardomo comes back so that's something of course that we will keep you updated on the more. Which way did you say they were leaning there? Towards Kevin Newman. And I think like I said, the one thing Tori emphasized there was his versatility in the infield and how he could back up a lot of positions there.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Yeah. And he's more experienced for sure, better to defend. It's just tough when Blaze is now hitting 300 with a 792 OPS to send them down. What about the vibes? Yeah. Blaze discussed the vibes yesterday on last night's postgame show. He's Mr. Vives. It kind of makes me sick to think of a clubhouse without Blaze Alexander.
Starting point is 00:13:30 It would be sad. It would feel empty. This is a man who had a leak over his locker in the clubhouse and they put a trash can there to collect the water. And Blaze thought he was being sent down. Based on that he thought that they were putting his stuff in a literal trash bag because he had been as he said himself trash That's that's I love that for him and about him, but of course It's just the mental mistakes man like like that that that play like today like you can there's no argument that that's like an ability thing No one would ever say that a major league baseball player is just going to step off the bag like he's just
Starting point is 00:14:07 He's clearly like the defense is just a step behind right now. Yeah and the all Offense is great. So that's the problem because you want to keep them up because you need his bat. Especially with the way that a lot of people like Corbin are swinging right now. Cade Richard says Kevin and Blaze both stays, Suarez, DFA. And I'm not saying, I don't believe that that's out of the range of possibility. I really don't any longer. I do think that the Diamondbacks at this point don't really want to eat any more money like they had to do last year.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Again, they are still paying Madison Bumgarner this season, $14 million, I believe. but I also think it's a matter of when you have a guy like Gino, you know, you do believe that you do really believe. And I mean this as honestly as I can state that Tori believes these guys are going to turn it around. And Tori really believes that it's not a problem of physical ability. It's a matter of a mental block. It's a matter of, again, just kind of the approach at the plate and how aggressive you're being. Not necessarily with the swinging because we've seen Suarez strike out plenty. Just with the aggressive approach at the plate, we've seen the diving back strike out a lot looking.
Starting point is 00:15:21 And I think that's something that's really driving Tori a bit nuts. In big situations. Yeah, he'd rather see you swing at that and go down, you know, being aggressive, especially in like account where you need to protect the zone and you need to swing at all of those borderline pitches. We've seen them strike out looking at a lot of those borderline pitches. And I think before you got in, I literally was talking to Jacob and I was like, I just, Lordus was up in a big situation. And I was like, I just need to see him put it in play. Just give me a chance. Like, I'm so tired of the strikeouts with two plus runners on and less than two outs.
Starting point is 00:15:55 It's all the time. And they're just taking like massive three, two pitches. They're playing scared at times. Like, you can tell they're timid. They are. They are playing scared. That's exactly what it is. I also want to do, I do want to say something about Gino in his defense, though.
Starting point is 00:16:11 this game probably would have been way more out of hand had it not been for the way he handled things defensively, especially in that inning where the Giants had bases loaded no outs and the Diamondback somehow got out of it without allowing a single run, right? This game at 9 to 3 is pretty much a blowout, but it could have been much worse for this team. And of course, it could have been much, much longer. and I think right now I am ready to throw some shade at three hour and 30 minute baseball games. Damon, I need some loud music and maybe some sort of fire effects. Are you fucking kidding me for a day game? There were children present.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Those children don't understand the concept of sitting there watching a three hour and 30 minute baseball game. All they are sitting there, camps, children everywhere, asking their camp counselors, why are we still here? When do we get to go home? Why do we do this? This is the exact kind of game that causes a pitch clock to be created. And this was with a pitch clock. Can you imagine how outrageously long this game would have been if there was no time limit on how much time pitchers could walk around for or how many times Tori Lovolo could have gone to the bullpen? My God, don't give me this bullshit. about games used to be four hours
Starting point is 00:17:47 or games used to be this long. Great. I have more things to do. And you know what? This is my job. Damon has things to do. Shane has things to do. My entire office came to a grinding halt because of a three-hour-thirty-minute baseball game. And I just need to not have this happen anymore.
Starting point is 00:18:06 I don't know whose fault this is. At the end of the game, I definitely felt an umpire that was making a radic calls all day long. Could have been given some more strikes on the border just to get this shit over with so I don't know what happened here but I blame everybody involved I played the game of baseball I blame
Starting point is 00:18:23 the sun for making me so angry on this 110 degree day and mostly I blame you Home Blade umpire that I don't know your name and I'm not going to put you on blast this moment simply because you were calling the game as you thought you should you need to get shit over with it was nine to three let's keep it moving here all right

I told him, day of the game, hop on game time. Is your friend Anthony Tochrie? No, no. Because I told him the same damn thing. Did you? Yes, Tootry's going to San Diego this weekend.

So there's a seat at Arizona football stadium where like you're legit behind like a concrete slab and you can only see like 10% of the corner of one end zone and you can pay for that ticket. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:22:37 Well, the good news is that the Arizona Diamondbacks did win this series. against the San Francisco Giants. And of course, that means that they can move on and hopefully take care of business here against the San Diego Padres. We knew this was a tough week, right? We weren't exactly chalking this series up to be an instant victory
Starting point is 00:22:54 or an instant sweep by any stretch of the imagination. But we also knew that the Giants weren't playing very good baseball and they've had their fair share of injuries as well. We're now coming on to a Padres team that they've experienced some losses as well, but they're still playing pretty decent baseball. Luis Arise is just an absolute madman, and it's a damn shame that he ended up in the NL West.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Once again, the best players, please stop coming to the NL West. But what the Diamondbacks can very much do is hopefully stay on a roll here. It's a four-game series against the Padres and considering how close they are to the Padres for one of those wild card spots right now. It's an important series, but beyond that, the Diamondbacks do have some very winnable series,
Starting point is 00:23:38 coming up as we've talked about here against the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Angels and a few other teams. So Washington Nationals, I think, is after that. But they did take care of business in this series. And of course, let's take a look at the count. Let's work the count presented by our friends at Desert Financial Credit Union to see exactly how things went. And it's kind of funny, isn't it? You know, sometimes we look at these series numbers. And of course, the losses tend to look like wins. and here in this case, the wins might look a little bit like a loss, but the Giants end up outscoring the Diamondbacks 16 to 15. Of course, the hits here. The Diamondbacks out hit the Giants, 31 hits to 28.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Runners in scoring position, the Diamondbacks did a good job, at least in one of these games with runners in scoring position. Good enough for a 286 batting average to the 194 batting average for the Giants. And then, of course, starting pitching, relief pitching, once again, not very good for either one of these teams. The Diamondbacks, obviously the biggest issue with Diamondbacks is Jordan Montgomery start going two innings, giving up six earned. And on the other end of it, Ryan Nelson really held things down with his seven and two-thirds
Starting point is 00:24:50 innings pitch, giving up two earned runs in his outing. But yep, relief pitching there for the, or I guess I should say starting pitching, ERA, 4.22 for the Giants, 6.43 for the Diamondbacks. and then relief pitching 5.52 for the Giants 4.15 for the Diamondbacks. Not a great series really for either team, but at least the Diamondbacks walk away with a victory here. And again, it's a very encouraging time. There's been too many series, Derek, where we've won the series or should have won the series and we didn't actually win it. So I don't really care how they go about it.
Starting point is 00:25:24 If they get the W in the series, I'm taking it no matter what. No, you're absolutely right. You're absolutely right. I think back upon the numbers against like the Yankees and some of those other series where it does look like the Diamondbacks dominate the series and they end up losing two out of three. This is finally a case where, hey, you know, whatever, we'll take the win. And honestly, this was a really big win for them. It's at a really good time. And hopefully, like we said, we haven't really seen it up to this point.
Starting point is 00:25:51 This is probably the first time. This four game winning streak that ends today was probably the first time that we saw the Diamondbacks actually, you know, have some of that offense. carryover started in a loss against the Mets in game two of that series and you know kind of got things kick started and and we saw them put up some numbers today three runs you know three runs not enough and of course we will hopefully see the diamondbacks put put up some bigger numbers here against the Padres in san diego they'll make too makes a good point here uh that we have i don't know how we've gotten this far into the show and haven't talked about it yet but he apparently he told you to clean up that scruff on your face and said that you may hold some responsibility for that
Starting point is 00:26:29 to that. I mean, look, I'm not going to, by any means, skirt responsibility here, but I'm going to say a mustache sounds like it. Is different than a beard. Am I not wrong? I mean, is, is, is a beard not all, like, I don't know. Would, would you say like a motorcycle is half of a car, or would you say it's a different thing? I'm just asking. I just need some clarification. I will shave my face tonight. I promise you will see a clean-shaded dirt tomorrow. If you were like, hey, I can't drive my car. I'm not allowed to right now. My license is suspended.
Starting point is 00:27:07 And then you were like, but I'm going to drive my motorcycle. I don't know that that works like that. You know what? When you say it that way, it's my own analogy being used against me. And you might be right. You might be right. Of course, I don't know. I really
Starting point is 00:27:22 don't know. But we will have Jesse joining us here from Chase Field shortly. but of course if we until then did want to talk a little bit about all-star voting because all-star voting began today and I wanted to first get Damon's thoughts on voting for actual all-stars versus just voting for every player on your team what are we doing here I feel like I always do it within reason so my play is always like I go after all the people on my team that I think have a slight chance of maybe making it. And I vote for all of them.
Starting point is 00:28:01 So like I'll end up voting for like five, six D back starters just because I'm trying to like get every single one of our guys that has a shot in. Sure. And then all vote like just the best players in baseball to kind of round it out. That's my, that's always how I've done it. Like majority my favorite team slash players and then kind of round it out with just like the, the cunias and stuff. Not this year, but in general. I like Torrey's honesty today. He was asked about his all-star picks, and he gave very managerial answers.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Let's go ahead and see what Tori had to say today in regards to his selections for the All-Star game. Every single one of them. Every single one of them. Man, there's some clear front runners for me on this ball club. Ketel is a clear frontrunner. Christian Walker is a clear front runner. Let me go around, walking around the field here right now. You know, I wish I could say some starting pitching,
Starting point is 00:29:12 but everybody's so banged up, I don't know if we can go into that direction. Ryan Thompson has been a heck of a year. Paul Seawalt's trending in a very positive way. I really missed some time. And those are probably my starting points right there. That was a pretty damning pause. Was it not?
Starting point is 00:29:33 When he started talking about the pitchers? Just in general where he was like, he was like, Catelle, Christian, uh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think that's what a lot of people are thinking. He might be right, though. Those are the front runners, I think, for this team. I think he's right about starting pitching. They have been too banged up.
Starting point is 00:29:50 And I don't think Brian Nelson or Slate are going to be, you know, obviously all-star candidates. But I just have to say him mentioning Seawald and not mentioning our boy, J-Mart. That's an egregious error. It's an egregious. They both been about on the team for about the same amount of times. This is J-Mart ratio. Zachent is right.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Yeah, J-Mart is unhittable. Yeah, he's the, he's the goat. He's the best relief pitcher in the game. If he's not in the All-Star game, it's a travesty. I don't, I really think that him and Ryan Thompson are the right selections there, and they both deserve it. They both honestly deserve it. But yeah, Cattels had an incredible year.
Starting point is 00:30:27 And of course, Christian Walker, one of the best first baseman, doesn't get the credit. He deserves defensively and hardly ever will. But after what we saw the other day, him make a literal game-saving play there to tap Soler on the head on a pretty erratic throw was exactly why Christian Walker is, you know, not only. an all-star but yeah that very underrated player yeah for sure like a little thing like that literally want us the game because he has like a 40 inch vertical you know like that was insane athleticism on that play his ability to get to poorly thrown balls at times i mean he just makes it look so easy uh even a play like that he can make look very very easy so uh christia walker definitely uh definitely pick alice says what about brandon fought he's the only starter that i think of that could be
Starting point is 00:31:20 possibly close i think his numbers were wouldn't allow for that, right? I think, unfortunately, his ERA and such wouldn't really allow for Brandon to be considered for that. But he's definitely, we know what Brandon Fott has become and we know what we're getting out of him regularly. It's just a matter of- That's more of like an eye test thing for sure.
Starting point is 00:31:38 Like, like I think we all think Brandon Fought's been our best pitcher this year. But then if a casual fan just looked at in Sala as like four plus ERA, they'd be like, Brandon Fought's been pretty average this year. So I, unfortunately, I don't think he'll have any chance. Yeah. you might be right about that. We'll have some videos here shortly from the clubhouse, including Tori Lovolo. We got Jordan Montgomery, and I think that's, might have Brandon Tucker Barnhart, but
Starting point is 00:32:06 might not. But of course, we do have you guys here. We thank you guys for being here. Starting point is 00:34:55 And now we're going to give you a little taste of the one and only Thundersteak, Jesse Friedman. We are being joined by my vice mayor from Chase Field. And Jesse, we have talked about it a bit, but Jordan Montgomery obviously had an awful day. And we've already talked about having buyer's remorse, but I would really like to return this item to the store now, sir. I think it's broken. I think Jesse might be broken. Speaking of broken, I think I might be broken. Can you guys actually hear me right now?
Starting point is 00:35:28 A little bit. We can hear you. Yeah, it's just super delayed. Yeah. Video's not great. Yeah. That's unfortunate. Yeah, well, maybe we, maybe I hop out and hop back.
Starting point is 00:35:43 Yeah. Yeah, let's give that a try. Yeah. We'll have Jesse come back. because of course we don't want that version of Jesse. I have something that we kind of missed on that I wanted to mention real quick. We were talking about the All-Star conversation. How crazy is it that Cattell Marte is a one-time All-Star?
Starting point is 00:36:03 Doesn't that feel like disrespectful to him? Yes. If he's going to end his career as like a two-time All-Star, like the dude plays second base, he's a better hitter than almost every second baseman in baseball, maybe other than like Ozzy Albies over the last so many years. So injuries have held him back. True. But it just it just hurts.
Starting point is 00:36:21 You know the center field experiment. Obviously, I mean, I feel like that's a big impact, right? Yeah. We talked about not only was he not good in center field, but we wonder how much of those injuries that he had was caused by his play in center field. So I mean, again, changing his position definitely impacted the number of all-star appearances. that he had. But I mean, Cattel, we know what Catelle is. And Catell this year has been incredible. He really should be a frontrunner for the All-Star game. But we'll see. We'll see if once again,
Starting point is 00:36:57 he gets that credit. I think his hitting streak in the playoffs last year definitely helps, you know, people know who he is. And then you see him doing it again this year. It's hard. Him not making it last year was pretty egregious. Like, we said it at the time, but I mean, 276, 358, 485 slash line last year for him. 25 bombs, 82 RBI. Yeah, but multiple second baseman can make it. Like, I just don't, he definitely should have been on the team last year. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:27 Well, of course, let's give Jesse a try again. Is Jesse, is his internet better? Looks better. Oh, yeah. I don't know. Are we better? Yeah, he looks great. Yeah, it's the one and only thunder stick Jesse Freeman.
Starting point is 00:37:39 Great shot. I'm sure the building is hot right now. But one thing that wasn't hot today was Jordan Montgomery's start, Jesse. Let's talk about Monty really being a problem now for this starting rotation. Sounds great, Derek. Yeah, a 6.80 ERA on the season at this point. I mean, you think about the Diamondbacks. I mean, this is sort of a crazy thought,
Starting point is 00:38:06 but you think about the Diamondbacks having Montgomery on the books for $25 million this year, you know, the money they're paying to Eduardo Rodriguez this season. basically Madison Bumgarner. His last year's salary was this season. Diamondbacks are paying a whole lot money out to three starting pitchers that one of them has already, you know, is long gone from the organization in Bumgarner. Eduardo Rodriguez has yet to throw a pitch and Jordan Montgomery has an ERA of nearly seven. And that and that just feels like the nature of what's happened when the Diamondbacks have gone out and tried to acquire big name starting pitchers. It just hasn't really worked very well for them, going all the way back to, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:49 the Shelby Miller trade and, you know, how much he really struggled the moment he arrived in Arizona. Granky, I guess, is sort of the exception there. He wasn't, he wasn't great in his first season with the devax, but obviously turned things around after that and was a pretty solid pitcher for them. But yeah, it's tough. I mean, the devax went out. They spent money. They did the thing.
Starting point is 00:39:07 They, you know, they got a lot of respect from around the league. and it just hasn't really panned out so far. What do they do here? I mean, at this point, I feel like the only option is to continue to let Montgomery try to figure a way out of this and coach him out of it and hope that he can be the pitcher that he was last year because he should be able to figure that out. In theory, it just, this is kind of like what we've said with a few guys at the plate this year. Like, you hope to see him turn it around or you at least hope to see an improvement. especially after Montgomery's last start.
Starting point is 00:39:44 And now here we sit at an even worse start than the last time he was on the mound for this team. Yeah, I mean, it was eight runs the last time, right? In four innings, I want to say today, two plus innings, six runs, the Grand Slam, obviously for Wilmer Flores, he threw quite a few pitches in that third inning. I believe 27 of them, he was not able to record it out. It was really ugly. I mean, for a while, it felt like Montgomery wasn't really himself, but yet he was still reliable, in a sense, where he was still giving you six or seven innings pretty consistently.
Starting point is 00:40:22 Diamondbacks were giving him a pretty decent amount of run support. They were still winning a lot of the games that he started. I think there's still five and four in games started by Montgomery this season, despite the ERA being as high as it is. But, yeah, I mean, we talked yesterday about how difficult this stretch is with so many. starters out and the debacks having four really young pitchers plus Montgomery. Montgomery was really on paper supposed to be kind of the one sure thing in this starting rotation right now. And he's he's been anything but that, right? I mean, at least given how he's looked over the last couple of starts, you don't really know what you're going to get from him at this point.
Starting point is 00:41:02 And he is a veteran. I mean, he is, he does have one of the more reliable track records in all of baseball. When you go back to when he had Tommy John's surgery, basically since then, he's been a sub-4 ERA guy every single year that he's pitched in this league. So it felt coming into the year, like even if he wasn't a Sy Young contender, which he generally hasn't been in the past,
Starting point is 00:41:25 he would still be a solid pitcher and just a safe bet to give you some innings and high-quality innings at that. And obviously that is not happen. after nine starts aren't we too far away from the weird spring training he had to still be blaming it on that or do you think that there is still an impact on this season based on just everything Montgomery went through not just the you know not just coming to Arizona but the the short and spring training the you know change of agents everything that he's kind of gone through the disappointment of not getting the contract that he expected and
Starting point is 00:42:05 honestly if he was pitching like this for another team that gave him a big contract i imagine that this would be even more of a disaster so i mean i what what are you really attributed to at this point he was asked that question again after this start like do you feel like the lack of spring training is still having some effects in montgomery's response and i quote no i just staining that is all that he said. Damon, to respect the hell out of that. This was a
Starting point is 00:42:34 pretty somber sort of post-game presser for Montgomery, as you'd expect. We have a video of that, I believe. I don't know if that's ready to roll at this point. Here's Montgomery outing and his struggles from this game and this season. There's way more negatives and positives
Starting point is 00:42:51 right now, so it's hard to see any positives right now. From your perspective, do you feel this is more about location or more about movement. Do you feel like the velo being down a couple of ticks on the sinkers had an impact?
Starting point is 00:43:26 I mean, definitely been searching for it. Stronger than I've ever been. You know, what it is. I haven't clicked yet. At this point, do you think you're in your bizarre spring is having any effect still? No. I just think
Starting point is 00:43:46 It's just It's frustrating you've ever been. Yeah, I mean, baseball's definitely got me in the furnace right now, so just got to be a good teammate and keep working hard and trying to get out of it. It's kind of heartbreaking to see how frustrated he is there.
Starting point is 00:44:07 You know, like, especially when he says that he feels stronger than ever. Like, that's, you know, you wonder about health, you wonder about endurance, you wonder about a lot of things when it comes to a pitcher. not being able to perform at the level that you're used to seeing them perform. And so not only does he look frustrated, but he looks confused. Like, sounds like he's kind of like, like not really wanting to answer these questions,
Starting point is 00:44:31 which obviously he doesn't want to answer. But it really does sound like he has no clue of really why he's doing so poorly right now. I think that's pretty fair. Yeah, I mean, I'm sure that just the immediate aftermath, of a start like this. Like, you're going to be frustrated. You're maybe not going to want to dig super deep into some of the details. I can certainly understand that.
Starting point is 00:44:56 But, yeah, at least from what he said after this game, there weren't a whole lot of specifics of like, oh, I, you know, this is an area where I need to improve or, you know, at least I have this positive to take away. He basically just said, yeah, like everything kind of sucks right now. And, you know, he was asked about his curveball, which is a pitch that I think has been fairly steady form. He got a decent amount of swing and miss on that pitch again today. Granted, he also gave up a grand slam on that pitch to roll up four. Yeah, there were six whips, which is a good number. But yeah, even that, he was like, yeah, I don't, you know, I don't, he wasn't
Starting point is 00:45:35 reading much into the swing and miss that he's gotten on his curveball. He just said that that's the beginning of the clip we just played where he said that it's hard to, it's hard to feel any kind of positives right now. So he's clearly, yeah, he's clearly going, going through it. And, you know, you have to, just on a human level, I think you have to feel for someone who's, who's had just so much success throughout their career. And he's clearly taking full accountability for, for everything that's happened. He's not, you know, a lot of times you'll see guys who were, who were like, you know, there were just balls that fell in or whatever. Like, he's, he's not saying that. He's, he's taking full ownership and saying, I just, you know, I just stink, which, you know,
Starting point is 00:46:14 it's a really tough place for him to be. And, you know, as you heard him say at the end, this is the most frustrated he's ever been as a major league pitcher and understandably so. I think you're in a very vulnerable spot when you are an athlete doing a postgame interview, right? So I understand. I am an emotional person. I have said on this show sometimes how much I hate my performances on this show and how bad my postgame press conferences would be. if I had to leave out of Studio K and get like six reporters in my face asking me how I thought I did tonight,
Starting point is 00:46:49 what went wrong, why I messed up that ad read there in the second ad break, you know, things like that. Like, what went wrong there when you really couldn't read words written on a computer page, right? And I just called it a computer page. Like literally right there, I just made a mistake. But, I mean, I think at times when I see Diamondbacks players after a bad performance, I want to scream at them to stop feeling sorry for themselves. You know, like I want to somehow, once again, inject them with like the Tommy fam spirit of like, you know, just having some sort of chip on your shoulder and having some sort of like, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:47:28 like a desire to just go out there and do it again and make up for the mistake. But what I feel like what we see a lot of times is these Diamondbacks players and not just Jordan Montgomery there, but position players, especially like, you know, Corbyn and Gino and some of the guys this year that have struggled, really kind of sit there on camera and say things like that or say or look really lost when it comes to the answers there as to what's going on with them. Like baseball is such a, it is such a mysterious sport at times that literally leaves these men that are athletes that have achieved some of the greatest heights, you know, making it to the World Series last year, just one season later, leaves them literally like looking broken and confused
Starting point is 00:48:11 as to, you know, what's gone wrong with them. And that includes Montgomery making it to the World Series, you know, with the Texas Rangers and being such a valuable weapon for that franchise. But we also have Tori Lavallo here, Jesse, responding to Montgomery's Velow being down post-game. Here's what Tori had to say.
Starting point is 00:48:31 Not really. Not really. Yeah, I know you guys asked me had a couple weeks ago, but he had some 93s up there the last start. He was some for his basketball. So I know the power is still there. It's just about look at where he wants to. So he's in 91, 92. I'm perfectly fine with that as long as he's placed it in the right spot.
Starting point is 00:48:52 The general consensus just seems to be right now that Jordan Montgomery isn't really getting the pitches where he wants to get them. And we definitely saw that with his breaking stuff today. He was missing in the same spot a lot, you know. and we just saw him not be able to get the stuff he wanted to get into the zone. Do we have that chart of all of his sinkers from the game today? We sure do. There it is.
Starting point is 00:49:18 Yeah, there it is. So, yeah, this, I mean, this is the location of every sinker that Montgomery threw in this game. And generally, a sinker is a pitch that moves down. It is a pitch that you want to locate down in the strike zone. Right. So that means there's a lot of misses here, even though there's a decent number of pitches in the zone. there's a lot of sinkers here that are in the top half of the strike zone. None of them should be belt high or higher, right?
Starting point is 00:49:44 Is that essentially the thought process here? I'm not going to say it's like totally impossible that you would want to do that. But it, yeah, like as a general idea, yeah, you don't want to be throwing sinkers belt high or above, at least the vast majority of the time you'd want to avoid that. So yeah, and that makes it hard to evaluate. how much impact the Velo really has. Because maybe there's a world where Jordan Montgomery can throw 91 to 92 as he has for most of this season and be totally fine. Still be completely effective.
Starting point is 00:50:20 But as long as he's throwing these pitches in those locations, like he wasn't doing that before when he was throwing 93. So it's a little bit hard at this point to judge the impact of the Velo when the location, the command, has regressed so much in the process. But I am a little, I will say that, you know, Tori there was asked, do you have any concerns about the downtick in VILO? I don't know if Tori has ever answered in the affirmative to that question, ever about anyone, even in situations where it was very obvious, frankly, at least to me, that VILO was a pretty serious concern. So I'm not here to say necessarily that, like, oh, deep down, Tori is concerned about this,
Starting point is 00:51:01 or, oh, Tori certainly should be concerned about this. But just based on how he's responded to these questions in the past, him saying he's not concerned doesn't really move the needle for me a whole lot. Frankly, the difference between 91 and 93 is it doesn't sound like much, but I think it actually can be pretty significant. Montgomery is not, he's never been a power pitcher, but there's a pretty big difference between a 91-mile-hour fastball and a 93-hour fastball. those two ticks can be the difference in missing a bat and missing, you know, the barrel at the very least. And we, you know, we certainly haven't seen Montgomery do a whole lot of that this season. Well, the good news is the Diamondbacks do, of course, win the series. And they move on to San Diego.
Starting point is 00:51:48 We get word that Geraldo Perdomo will play seven innings tonight for the AAA Reno Aces. And Lovolo said that he was doubtful, basically, that Perdomo would be back in time. for this upcoming series with the Padres. It sounds very much, though, like we should see Jerry P. return after that. Now, we do know the guys that could be being sent down or could be this corresponding move are all playing well right now, Jesse, including Pavin Smith for whenever Alec Thomas comes back. So it feels like the guys specifically that are on the bubble are making it very hard for this
Starting point is 00:52:26 team to potentially part ways with them. I still feel like what we said the other day stands true, though, and we would most likely still see Blaze Alexander and Pavin Smith as essentially the corresponding moves, both Geraldo Pardomo and Alec Thomas when he returns. But, I mean, are we moving into a world where these guys and Jake McCarthy are making it very hard to have those guys be the ones that are sent down? I mean, they're making it very hard.
Starting point is 00:52:57 I think there's no question about that. I mean, Tori said yesterday before the game that he's already lost sleep over the decision of, of, you know, who to send out when the Diamondbacks do get Perdomo back and actually the Godalach Thomas back too. So, yeah, those decisions are tough. And I mean, I've never really answered these questions like super strongly. I mean, a few days ago, the case for Jake McCartney over Pavin Smith, as we discussed a few days ago, was a lot clearer than it is now. like Pave and Smith now is an 896 OPS. He's three points behind Jock Peterson for having the highest OPS on this team.
Starting point is 00:53:33 Granted, it's only been like 55 plate appearances or something like that. But a lot of those plate appearances was when he wasn't eating bananas, Jesse. He wasn't getting up potassium. And now this is different. This is like Popeye with his spinach. Pavan Smith is the banana man and he can't be stopped. Yeah, no, that's a perfectly, that's a perfectly, that's a perfectly bad point.
Starting point is 00:53:54 Maybe maybe that's just the difference for Pavin, you know, the turning point of his careers for these last few years. He just happens to have been eating enough bananas during the game. And now he's doing that. And so he's going to turn things around and just be a 900 OPS guy the rest of the way. It's to say. There's a whole world of fruit out there. Maybe we could unlock everybody's superpowers, you know? Maybe maybe Lourdes isn't getting enough actual pineapple.
Starting point is 00:54:17 I'm just saying maybe we can slip some more pineapple into his diet. We see this man returned to his all-star form. But, yeah, I mean, again, LeVolo today was asked in a very sneaky way by Teo Mackey about Newman's versatility and how, you know, if he can play kind of everywhere on the infield. And Tori said that they very much like that versatility. And it does sound a bit, just a little bit like they might be leaning definitely towards Kevin Newman based on that versatility, even though Blaze Alexander as of today is hitting 300. Yeah, I would, I really don't, I really don't have a great feel for that decision, honestly, at this point. Kevin Newman versus Blaze Alexander, I really could see that going either direction. I mean, Newman is, is the more reliable, steady shortstop. I think that's pretty well established at this point.
Starting point is 00:55:09 Blaze is on a really nice run offensively at a couple more hits in the game today. It'd be, it'd be really tough to lose his bat, honestly. I mean, he had seconded today against a. right-handed pitcher. Obviously, that's because Ketel was sitting this one out, but he still had a couple hits in that spot and performed pretty well. So I think Blaze has a cannon of an arm. So, you know, you like the thought of that at third base. Newman, I think, could hold his own there, as, as Tori described as well. So I don't know, Derek. I really don't have a great feel for how these decisions are going to go. And I wouldn't want to be to a fellow right now. Having to try to make
Starting point is 00:55:49 those decisions. Well, and I wouldn't want to be either, Jesse, because I feel like the big problem with Reno is that whoever you send down is going to go just mash. And no matter what happens, it's going to look like you most likely made the wrong decision. So we don't. That's the way things go in Reno. But speaking of Reno, Reno ACE's catcher, Adrian Del Castillo has been named the PCL player of the month during the month of May. Kest, Del Castillo hit 359, 412, 641, leading the PCL and hits and total bases. And basically being in the top five categories for almost every other offensive category, he's lighting the league on fire, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:56:33 And I just have to ask, since Tucker Barnhart hasn't gotten a hit since May 7th, when, oh, when could we possibly see Del Castillo at a major league level? Should have been yesterday. Is that true? Barnhart doesn't have a hit since May 7. Oh, for 19, I want to say. He's a lot of walks. Gets on base.
Starting point is 00:56:56 But he is, yeah, he's in a middle of a pretty significant slum. I think that's a move that you could make. Yeah, I just know that the diamondbacks value the experience that a guy like Tucker Barnhart has. I mean, I don't think he's an extraordinarily great defensive catcher at this stage in his career. We didn't really expect that coming into the year either based on his past metrics. But I guess there's just kind of a steadiness with him and the relationships that he's built with these pitchers. It's tough to, I mean, calling up a catcher midseason is just different than calling up really anything else because that catcher has, I mean, if you're bringing up Delcastillo for his bat, like that's great. But he's going to have a whole lot more than that on his plate having to get to know every single pitcher that the bat.
Starting point is 00:57:48 that the Diamondbacks have at the big league level. So it's easier said than done. But I mean, Del Castillo, I mean, as you were, as you were saying earlier, like, those numbers, he's doing the thing. Like, he has been every bit the hitter that you could have hoped he would be this season. And Diamondbacks seem to like the progress that he's made defensively. I don't know exactly in their minds, like how his defense compares with Barnhart. I'd be sort of curious to know that.
Starting point is 00:58:16 but yeah it's still hard it's still a little hard for me to envision them just moving on from barnhart and going to to a guy not only do you you know is it going to be a tall task for him to catch all these pitchers but adjusting to the to the majors from a hitting standpoint is also a tall ass so it'd be it'd be a lot for him to handle i'm not so sure how they would view that jesse my last question to you is did i uh fail this team by not shaving my face, um, ball,
Starting point is 00:58:49 did I let the mustache come back too much? Is that really what the real problem was today with Jordan Montgomery's game? Yeah. I mean, I'm seeing like a little, there's, there's at least a little bit happening here that probably shouldn't be happening. I told you this.
Starting point is 00:59:02 Even if I shaved, it's going to be back by like 2 p.m. that same day, but, well, that means that you just have to take the shaver with you, Derek, wherever you go. I don't like that idea.
Starting point is 00:59:11 No, I don't want to shave. Do you care about this team or not? Dan, maybe, maybe we don't need it on. an hourly basis, but based on how fast it's growing, is you're describing? Like, I don't know, maybe we do like a 9 a.m., a noon, 3 o'clock, like every three hours,
Starting point is 00:59:26 we shave it off just to make sure that the vibes stay good. You back. I mean, this is your thing, Derek. I don't know about it convinced that this was working. Look, it was a playoff stash. It was a mistake. And I kept it on way too long. I'll be the first to admit it.
Starting point is 00:59:42 I don't know about you, Jesse, but from my perspective, at least, if we can get an electric razor and put it on the lowest setting and hair comes off of Derek's upper lip. I think that there's too much going on right there. Like there should be no hair that comes off on the one. We need to get it. There shouldn't be. I need to get clean shaving and I need this team to lose just so that we can stop this foolishness.
Starting point is 01:00:05 But I lie because I don't really want that. You know, I love it. I love the attention. I'm, you know, I'm a big attention guy. But of course, even though I did just lie, you know, the numbers don't lie. And you know, Jesse, he definitely doesn't lie. Jesse, what do you have for the numbers, don't lie for this game and this whole series?
Starting point is 01:00:23 Yeah, it's a, it's a 53 is the number for today. That is the number of pitches that Diamondbacks pitchers through in that third inning. I believe it was 27 by Jordan Montgomery and 26 by Logan Allen. Never great when you're, when you're reaching the 50 mark in one inning. Also, the Diamondbacks through 220 pitch. in this game as a team, which according to our friend Jack Summers, is a franchise record for a nine-in-ing game. The Diamondbacks have never thrown that many pitches in a nine-age game. That's why it was three hours and 30 minutes, Jesse.
Starting point is 01:01:01 That's exactly why it was three hours and 30 minutes. That's too many pitches. You don't throw that many pitches in a game. And that was also the longest nine-in-game in Diamondbacks history in the pitch-clock era, which granted is only a little over a year old at this point. But their previous high was three hours and 22 minutes. That was one of those crazy games in San Diego last August. Can't do it.
Starting point is 01:01:25 Where we hit that mark. Can't do it. We can't do this because you know what's going to happen. They're going to make the pitch clock even shorter is what they're going to do. And things are going to get insane. And we're just not going to have any time for anything anymore. But I definitely don't have time for three hour and 30 minute baseball games. And I do not have time for the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 01:01:43 throwing that many pitches. But of course, I do always have time for you guys. And I'm thankful that you guys had time for us.
