Starting point is 00:00:12 Welcome in to the PHNX DBAGs podcast right here on PHNX. My name is Derek Montaia, casually known as the mayor of the World Series. For how long? Who knows? Might just be for today. Of course, I'm joined by the one and only Patty Plantains, aka my hot tag partner, the one and only Patrick Lines from DNVR and Patrick. Is this it?
Starting point is 00:00:34 Is this it? If this is it, please let me know. It's it for Chase Field. It is it for Chase Field. Yeah, it was like the last day. school for me. I was out there taking pictures with like security guards and some of my favorite ushers and elevator people because to be honest, as much as I love the players, I interact with those people way more than I interact with the players. That's so cool. That's my family out there.
Starting point is 00:00:54 I miss the course field people. Yeah, right. I mean because yes, they become a part of your family and everything. So last, definitely the last game. Thank you. At Chase Field. Not necessarily the last game for the Diamondbacks. Last game at home for Greg Schulte. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. So a lot at stake. And we've talked a lot of about is this a must win, how much of a must win? Diamondbacks need to win it out for the final three games. And if any team can come back from that 3-1 deficit and join only a group of six other teams who have ever done it, including the 2016 Chicago Cubs, they were the last.
Starting point is 00:01:28 To come back from a 3-1 deficit and do it with two wins on the road, which the Cubs did, it's this diamondbacks team. It's this team. Yeah, it is this team. But they do have Zach Gallen on the mound. And Zach Gallen is absolutely the guy that if you would have. asked many people during the regular season, this is who they would have wanted in this spot.
Starting point is 00:01:46 I'm not trying to take anything away from him because I still think Zach Gallen is the Diamondback's best pitcher. I think he, when he is on, when he has his best stuff, he is the Diamondback's best pitcher. The problem has been consistency, right, and him having that best stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:02 In fact, I think Tori Lovelos said it yesterday, and I think many of us would agree, Zach Gallen at 80% is still pretty damn good and better than most pitchers. So if we can get Zach Gallen at maybe 90%, 95%, God help you if you get him at 100%. He could definitely get the job done. And I think he would be the person we would want on the mound, aside from, I guess, this
Starting point is 00:02:23 postseason run and the way things have kind of gone. Yeah, that's interesting quote that Tori had earlier because it seems like Zach Gallen, the postseason is more like the 45th percentile, maybe the 50th percentile. Because during the regular season, the 20 percent of Zach Gallen that doesn't show up, That's those clunkers that we've seen already in this postseason giving up five runs in an outing. And he absolutely can't do that. I think even five innings of three run ball might not even get the job done, which is what he did there in game five at home against Philadelphia in a similar situation. But now this is an elimination game.
Starting point is 00:02:58 This is the first elimination game that Zach Gowell has had to pitch it. And so it will be interesting with maybe more pressure on him. Will he be able to respond to that? doing it at home where the numbers are a lot more favorable. So there's things going in in Zach Gallen's favor. He has a little bit of momentum. The Rangers would surely love to just close it out. We know they're 10 and O this postseason on the road.
Starting point is 00:03:20 But the first inning, and Jacob and I talked about this. I was going to say, what inning is it, Patrick? That's it. On the DNVR Rockies podcast earlier today is like the first inning is kind of almost make or break. Like if the Rangers even score one run, that is, that's going to, you know, incrementally increase the likelihood that the Rangers can win this game. But if Zach Allen can just post a zero in that first inning, particularly because Corey Seeger will bat in that first inning, as will Marcus Simeon, who's heated up, then the
Starting point is 00:03:50 Diamondbacks can go out there and maybe jump out to that early lead. But it only happens if Zach Allen gives them some momentum with a scoreless top of the first. That's it. And I mean, I agree. I'm not going to go into any kind of panic mode by any stretch of the imagination. but yeah I mean we can't see Zach go out there and struggle we definitely can't see him go out and give up as many walks as as he has at times during this postseason run most importantly you want to just see him be able to command because I feel like his command has not been there I feel like at times that's the you know you're you're not hitting your edges you're not going to be fooling anybody and unfortunately you know we've seen him kind of come back around and throw some you know center cut fast balls and things like that that allowed him to get into a lot of trouble and he's going up against a big game Nate and Nathan Avaldi. So let's take a look at this pitching comparison between these two guys because they were both, once again, very, very good, both, you know, the aces for their
Starting point is 00:04:44 respective teams. And I think the one trait that they have in common is both of these guys weren't seen as this at one point in their career. And Eivaldi has come around to really just prove that he, you know, especially for the Rangers, he was such a big addition and a big reason why they're here. obviously Zach Gallin has just been doing his thing the entire time that he has been a part of the Arizona Diamondbacks and you know of course 3.47 ERA for Gallin 3.63 for Evaldi this regular season 1.21 whip versus the 1.14. That was Gallin versus Evaldi and then 220 strikeouts for gallon
Starting point is 00:05:21 and 132 strikeouts for Evaldi. So we ain't done yet as Tim says. As Alex Thomas would say, we ain't done yet. We ain't done yet. but this absolutely will be the last game of the year at Chase Field, win or lose. And of course, we do have to ask the question.
Starting point is 00:05:39 I mean, you know, obviously we talked about, we debate, is this a must win? Is it not obviously we know tonight is a must win? But, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:46 is this the end for this magical fairy tale run that the Arizona Diamondbacks have had? It very well could be. But as we talked with our friend Jake from John Boy, Jake Storiel, we absolutely have a chance to win tonight and then go back and do exactly what we did, you know, to the Phillies. And that's take two at home over there.
Starting point is 00:06:06 The Rangers have been outstanding on the road. And that right now is the one, I think, bridge to cross is how can the Diamondbacks hand the Rangers, their first loss of the postseason on the road tonight? Yeah, make sure you go back and check out that video with us in our conversation with Talking Jake on the PCHNX Sports Channel. We'll have a little bit of that for you, by the way. Yeah, we've said this entire postseason. Every time you feel good, they lose.
Starting point is 00:06:30 me feel bad they win so they're going to win tonight because it doesn't look great you know yovald has just been better in the postseason his entire career especially this postseason you know four and oh entering the game one start which the rangers did eventually win but gallon you know a guy who has uh since 2020 since he really started to come into his own during that pandemic season he has a whip of 1.09 and during this postseason his whip has been 1.5 oh oh and like Like you said, that command, you know, in Milwaukee it was three walks. And then against the Dodgers, two, against the Phillies, two walks, two walks. So okay, but not as crisp as Gallen has typically been.
Starting point is 00:07:12 And then you saw four walks in game one, which allowed the score to be as close as it was, and then set up that game-tying home run for Corey Seeger against Paul Seawald. So Zach Gallen just has to find that command a lot quicker. And it's not that, hey, I'm behind early. I've given up some runs early. and then I can go ahead and end up lasting a little bit longer. I'm not sure if you remember which word it was if it was the first the Dodgers start or the one against the Phillies where he gave up some runs earlier.
Starting point is 00:07:41 I want to say in the second inning and it was like, oh, man, is he going to be able to figure this out? And he ended up going a little bit longer. I felt like it might have been his first three starts. It might even been in Milwaukee where you're like, oh, wow, you ended up getting five plus innings out of Zach Allen when it looked like he really didn't have his best stuff and you might have to go to your bullpen. I think there's a good chance we could see a lot of action in the bullpen without anything happening.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Like as soon as there's even, I'm not going to say a remote jam, but if there's just something of, there's some shakiness, it doesn't hurt to have a guy just have some dry throws, start getting loose, maybe even throw a couple pitches so that you can pull that trigger when you need to. But it may never come to fruition. You just have to be ready for that. And I think Tori's going to be tonight because he has to be. Yeah, absolutely. he doesn't have any choice but of course the diamond back son of a choice this is it they have to pull out all the stops uh they also have to you know obviously find find ways to to keep that offense rolling and get it rolling early versus yeah you know again we've seen them be able to generate some runs late in the games but it definitely seems too little too late at that point for this team uh so i know a big key is getting out ahead but also i mean you know at this point it does fall on zack
Starting point is 00:08:56 gallon, but it also falls on the offense a bit. You know, when you look at Gallen's past performances, they haven't all been games that didn't give you a chance to win. It was just games where the Diamondbacks couldn't do like what they did yesterday, which is just all of a sudden muster up six runs, you know, late in the game. And so, you know, again, we said this in the Phillies series. You're not going to beat the Phillies scoring two runs very often. You were lucky you got away with one where that happened.
Starting point is 00:09:21 And for the most part, these teams are potent offensively. We've seen that. another key obviously is staying away from Corey Seeger you know I can't say that enough but you just you just can't do that tonight you have to let somebody else beat you and it can't be Corey Seeger
Starting point is 00:09:37 this guy is red hot right now white hot it's incredible it'll be interesting to see what happens here in Tori's approach because Bruce Bochi does make a lineup change tonight Evan Carter is now going to be batting third with Mitch Garver hitting fifth uh excuse me fourth
Starting point is 00:09:53 Josh Young batting fifth so he continues to kind of move up in the batting order as is needed. But now you've got the two lefties. Now you've got two lefties going back to back. And so that will be interesting later on as the game moves on. Zach Gallen is going to have to do his thing in the early going. But you're right about Gallen kind of giving his team a chance to win because while we're only talking about one proper quality start this postseason, you can at least squint and say,
Starting point is 00:10:21 well, the second start against the Dodgers, five and a third, two earned runs, close to. a quality start in the postseason you're still giving your team a chance to win right especially with lovolo kind of having a short hook and not really letting guys get to that point of getting six innings getting seven innings he's just he's just not doing that right now because it's not worth the risk of the starting you know the lineup seeing them a third time and in game five against the fillies six innings pitch four runs okay again close and then the game one against the rangers that started this year's five innings pitch with three earned run so again you didn't get that maybe that extra inning. But you're in and around that area. There's a lot of guys who don't even get a chance
Starting point is 00:10:58 to go five innings because you go, there's no way this pitcher can salvage this. I got to go to my pen right away. And I don't necessarily, I wouldn't say that that's a fault of Toro Lavelle. Because if he had managed a Zach Gallen start any differently, I don't think we would be here. Yeah. Think about how much extra wear and tear that would have put on the bullpen and how you wouldn't have had those guys when you needed them late in that Philly series. So you can't have a revisionist history and say, oh, Tori should have done this, that, and the other, and the Zach Gallen start. Tonight, I think he will have to do that. And that will be really interesting.
Starting point is 00:11:30 If Gallen can be a little bit better than what he's been, then I think Tori will keep running him out there for five innings and we'll give the chance, the team a chance to win. But it is crazy to think that if you give up two runs, that there's your shot. It's done. The chat is getting me all emotional, Patrick. I cannot stand this. They're talking about it like this is over. I can't do this right now. I am not.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Well, we will do this tomorrow. What is the name of the frame, Derek? We have a rest of the goddamn fucking week. Look at me. Look at me. Says never surrender. It says never surrender.
Starting point is 00:12:05 And we will never surrender. We are like cobra Kai. Strike hard, strike fast. No mercy. I think that's how it is. But this is the thing. This team can't fucking give up because they have too much fight left in them. And right now the Texas Rangers are absolutely licking their chops at this team.
Starting point is 00:12:21 I am not, there's no more loser talk at this point. From this point on till the end of this show, till the end of this fucking game, we need to go out there and we need to whoop their ass. Zach Gallin needs to be Zach Gallin. I want a happy Galentine's Day. I want us all to make little Galentine's Day boxes and give each other Galentine's Day little cards
Starting point is 00:12:39 and pass them out and candy and shit. I want this day to be magical. And I want it to be a day we never forget because I want this to be the goddamn day. The Diamondbacks turned it around and won three games straight to win their second World Series. And nobody, nobody says we can't do that. Because why not us? Why not us? Evan, was Evan Lungoria's wife was saying, why not us? The Diamondbacks are picking up to why not us? Why not us? I get it. It's not great. We are in dire straits right now. But God damn it, Jake from John Boy is here. Let's go out of the mountain. Get up there. I'm going to tell you this right now. Jake
Starting point is 00:13:16 is protecting the pool. So even if those goddamn Rangers win tonight, they are not jumping in our pool because Jake will literally take the skimmer and fight each and every one of them off. That is what he's trained to do. That is what he's paid to do. And we will have a little clip of our entire conversation with Jake here in a minute. But I just needed to get everybody fired up because, God damn it, the snakes are alive. This team is a motherfucking wagon. The yoffs are not over.
Starting point is 00:13:39 And we are going to go whip their ass. There, I said it. Doesn't mean we don't love them, though. I mean, I've been skirting to you all. I've been, I have been skirting around this issue. I've been talking loser talk. No. I know you don't have, you can't do this, but I'm going to do this.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Do it. We're going to do this. Do it. Ski. Let's go. Skiy. Indeed. We are a connected team still.
Starting point is 00:14:00 We are a dangerous team. So get the shirt of a dangerous team over at the P.HNX locker right now. If you are a diehard member, you will get 20% off this beautiful, wearable piece of artwork. I saw someone wearing at the ballpark today. That's right, baby. We got Zach Lynn from Jimmy World wearing our wagon shirt yesterday. That shout out to our guy. And of course, make sure, if you have not.
Starting point is 00:14:19 and got your diehard membership yet get your diehard membership today of course you'll get a t-shirt for free hat for free whatever you want from phns p hnx locker you'll get 20% off all future purchases access to our members only discord lounge you'll get jesse's uh newsletter everything that we have to offer including discounts with our partners $50 gift certificate to mount Mike's pizza and so much more so let's go let's get it done tonight everyone in the chat think back and maybe we need a montage maybe maybe, Jacob, maybe you can just freeze time and take like 45 minutes to just do a quick little montage with Sarah McLaughlin's. If I could freeze time the last month of my life, the last month of my life would have been
Starting point is 00:14:58 incredible. Yeah. But I just, but you have to be more of a guy who is loyal to his job. So you have to freeze time and do more work. But it would be basically almost a highlight package of the end of the season with this man and Jesse or even myself here talking about. you know, the powerhouse Dodgers or that Brewer series, even the Phillies. And I will remember you playing it in some black and white of everyone in the chat just talking
Starting point is 00:15:24 about, oh, man, well, he was a good run. No one expected us to be here. We've got the future. There is no future. There's only right now. There is only tonight. There is no tomorrow. Carpe dea.
Starting point is 00:15:36 So go. Well, of course. Sees the snake. We did that. We thank you guys for being here. First of all, the PHANexport YouTube channel. Make sure you subscribe to the channel. Sign up for notifications.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Also, if you're listening on the online. audio podcasting side, leave us a review. Make sure you subscribe there. Most importantly, do what Gabby would do and leave us a like. Drop us a like. We always appreciate that. And of course, we talked about it. We had our guy, the one and only talking Jake from John Boy, from Wake and Jake, from all of that stuff.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Our guide, he's here in town. Like we said, he's being temporarily hired as a lifeguard slash bodyguard, I think, over at the pool area. And we have a little more from him. Of course, you can get this full interview right now on our YouTube channel. Here is Jake hanging out with us and talking about these two franchises overcoming those 100 lost seasons and getting to the World Series. It's the 100 loss season thing, right? You have a lot of teams now that are encouraged by what both of these teams did. The Rangers, you know, two seasons ago, 100 plus losses, Diamondbacks 110 losses, right?
Starting point is 00:16:35 So it's like for both teams to turn it around the way that they have and get here in two seasons later, if nothing more, if your franchise is struggling and you're in that position, you can look at. to these two teams and say, look how quickly we can go from where we're at to where we could be in that promise line. Every team except the Rockies. Yeah, that's right. Yes, two more years. Two more years during the World Series.
Starting point is 00:16:56 That's the math, Jake. Don't you get this? 2025, Rockies are going to the World Series. They broke me. I kind of had an NL West Coast free agency and it came down to the Rockies and the snakes. Snake social media team kind of ran out the, you know, when you see the
Starting point is 00:17:12 college recruit go there and they put them on the scoreboard and it's like touchdown, Snake's won, and now I'm sitting pretty. I'm Evan Longoria right now. It's not awkward with me here at all. No, man. I mean, dude, you know what that stadium has going and that city's awesome. But the fact that they haven't figured out any sort of baseball game plan and coming up on 30 years now.
Starting point is 00:17:36 We just celebrated the 31st season. Yeah. So it's been wild. I think one of the most enjoyable things about the Diamondbacks this year is that, like you said, this was supposed to be the bridge year of like, okay, they're going to be good in 2024. That's their year. And so it's just they've been playing with house money. It's like, wow, this team, look all these 23-year-olds, sitting home runs 12 now,
Starting point is 00:17:56 home runs this postseason by guys age 23 or younger. And you go, man, they're going to be really good for a couple years. And you almost forget that, hey, wait a minute, they could do it this year. And they continue to do it against the Phillies when they're down 3-1. They win two games in the fortress at Citizens Bank Park. And you go, wait a minute, forget about the future. Let's talk about 2023, and they still can do that now and kind of repeat what the Chicago Cubs did in 2016. They were down 3-1, came back to win it.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Diamondbacks, don't count them out. Win one game. I'll be guarding the pool, and hopefully I can help out with that. Maybe like a Jeffrey Mayer type situation. If there's a ball coming in, I can help out. But you win one game today. You have to go on the road to win two games to win a series. They just did that against the Phillies.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Similar teams to the Texas Rangers, if we're being honest. And I don't know, man, the answer backs, the rally backs, they've done it. They did it twice last series that it was like, oh, it's over. Yeah. 10-0, the Phillies were down 2-0, it's over. And then going back to Philly. So I don't know, win one game tonight. And it's Zach Allen has not been Zach Allen these playoffs.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Maybe tonight he gets to have his moment. Christian Walker has been out of sorts. He gets a couple hits yesterday. Like I hope that the little things from yesterday get to matter, whether it's Ryan Nelson, you know, eating a bunch of innings, whether it's Christian Walker. I hope that if you can get it back to Texas, Texas starts to feel it a little more. The Dolies is gone. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Yes. Which is crazy. It's insane. And Corey Seeger has entered full-blown. You can't pitch to a mode. Right. We found that out the hard way last night. Right.
Starting point is 00:19:35 Yeah. Garcia being out is something, again, that we just thought was going to have a much bigger impact. I think, right. Sports Pro 2. Pointe. I said something about, you know, definitely. mis-underestimating, you know, underestimating the, the Rangers, right? Undersimating Rangers is not,
Starting point is 00:19:50 I don't know if it's something they did, right? But they are a very good team. And honestly, they completely deserve to be here. And it's weird because they're, like, even though this series has gone down
Starting point is 00:20:02 the way it does, I just, I don't feel like there's any animosity at all between these teams. I don't feel like there's any animosity between the family. I went to game three and I looked at my friends. It's like,
Starting point is 00:20:11 this kind of sucks. I've just got no reason to hate Texas. Yeah, I just got no reason. And now I'm going to have a reason if they win. That's true. And if you celebrate in the pool and you knock our guy Jake over, then we'll come down and we're fighting the whole team.
Starting point is 00:20:23 We're just ending the post game show early. And we will march this, what, 15 minutes it takes to get down there? Fight's probably going to be over by then. We're going to have to run. We're going to have to probably run. But we'll do whatever we need to do. We're here to protect them. But yeah, the Rangers, it's just like what we said about the Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:20:38 The Dodgers is Freddie Freeman and Moogie Betts are just so likable. Mookie bets is just hanging out. out, viving at the world series. Like he's a reporter. He's got a media badge on. I've seen him a couple times. Like I said yesterday, he's still, still the coolest motherfucker in the room. Still never not going to be the coolest guy in the room. But like, yeah, it's hard to hate, you know, certain teams.
Starting point is 00:20:59 And I mean, Phillies were different. Phillies, I don't know. Hateable. It's very hateable. Very hateable. Yeah. Even without, most of the fans, though. Even without, like, Bryce Harper, like, doing anything to attack.
Starting point is 00:21:13 the Diamondbacks, just his presence in that flannel wearing the all black and Godfrew went, don't even give me starting on the Pat Beverly jersey, but that's a whole other thing. But yeah, this Texas Rangers team is definitely very potent and I still can't, I still just can't get over the idea of these two teams
Starting point is 00:21:31 being here in this spot after those 100 lost seasons two years ago. And I meant what I said earlier. This has to be one of those things that inspires every franchise, no matter where you are at in your development or where you are at as far as your division goes or anything like that, that you can overcome and get, you know, to the playoffs at least and make something crazy happen. It's true. And Jacob, if you need something to hate for the Rangers, we talked about in the postgame show like Corey Seeger, long time, long time foe in the NL.S. That's true.
Starting point is 00:22:04 It was a Dodger. There's a guy to hate. He was a Dodger. That's kind of something right there. Nathan Evaldi's. He's been around the National League a little bit here and there. Not necessarily dislikable of a guy. You know,
Starting point is 00:22:16 you could find those ways. A Roll this Chapman. There's plenty of dirt on that guy. There's plenty of hate for all this Chapman, but that's for the... On a human level, maybe even. I don't even think you should probably be playing professionally.
Starting point is 00:22:27 But that's, we're not going to go into that. That's a whole other thing. Jay brings up. Jay, Jay's starting with me. Jay in the chat says so proud of this team. It's not over, Jay.
Starting point is 00:22:36 Let's hold on. All right. I'm not. not going to do that yet. We'll do that later. We'll do that at some point. We'll definitely have that in our future. No. I'm just so proud after they hoist that fucking trophy in Texas. Direct it, inject it directly into my veins. Inject it. Yep, you got to put the money in the jar, but anyway. Can you make a paper airplane out of a dollar bill? Don't do that. No paper airplanes. You talked about that last night. You're going to poke someone's eye out. I was going to have
Starting point is 00:23:01 him to throw it into the swear jar. You are not helping. You are not helping. Let's take a look, though it's something that might help. And that is, once again, my bet MGM parlay for tonight where I will try to heap loads and loads of bad karma. Your bets have been too good lately.

Starting point is 00:23:38 It's helpful, right? I love Catelle off this one. I don't know if that's a good thing. That might have been, that's one thing I've included and worked this whole time, but that's neither here nor there. Right now what we need to focus on is the Rangers losing. So I needed all five spots to go towards that. Hopefully you use this app to make yourself money
Starting point is 00:23:55 and not just to heap bad karma onto the opposing team. But you know what? I'll say this every damn time. It's your app. You can do what you want with it. So don't let anybody tell you differently. It's what I do with my $5. It's none of your business.
