Hello and welcome into a Thursday night edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast.
My name is Jesse Friedman, joined by the one and only Damon Dog,
aka Damon Farrell, who is wearing some lovely shades here this evening as the Diamondback split.
A four-game series with the Atlanta Braves, Damon, this was quite a game.
Diamondbacks, they shut out victory.
They win this one-to-nothing.
Brandon Fott was outstanding.
A. Oh, Hennio, Hosewarez, scored.
The only run of this game with a solo Homer and Jake McCarthy, Damon, made the catch of the year question mark.
Would that be outrageous to say?
No, I think most people would say it's the catch of the year.
It's the most memorable catch, absolutely.
So we'll get into it a little bit more.
I have some thoughts on that catch.
But overall, what a just massive W tonight?
I mean, you split with the Braves.
You have a decent Blue Jays team coming up.
and right before the All-Star break.
But losing this series to the Braves 3-1 after,
especially after, you know, you blow a game in the first game of the series,
you know, it's pretty massive.
It's big for this team.
So they've been shown a lot of fight recently.
And they've been playing, you know, some at least competitive baseball for, you know,
the last month or so where they're going in.
And even when they lose, you know, they're losing close games where they had a shot.
Yeah, I mean, the Diamond.
DeBex, they took two out of three from the A's.
They took two out of three from the Dodgers.
They took two out of three from the San Diego Padres.
And even after dropping the first two games of this series, the first one in particular
in very ugly fashion, as you alluded to, DeBacks find a way to bounce back and split this series.
And they get back to 500 in the process.
They are 47 and 47, I believe exactly one game now out of the wild card picture in the
National League.
I guess we have to talk about Paul Seawall, Damon, and the, the,
context of that catch in the 9th inning. We definitely. Yes. Yeah, this was,
Seawall did get, he did get Austin Riley to strike out. And then Matt Olson comes up.
And this wasn't a terrible pitch. I mean, this was, Seawald has been very adamant in
recent conversations with the media that he's trying to throw his fastball up, basically all
the time. And any time he doesn't throw a fastball up. Yeah. That means it probably wasn't
located in the right spot. However, that pitch to Matt Olson in the nine.
thinning was a fastball that was on the upper outside corner it wasn't above the zone maybe he would
have wanted it above the zone in that spot but it wasn't a terrible pitch by any means matt olson
is a very very good hitter this is uh this is well documented at this point he goes opposite field
takes it to takes it to left and jake mccarthy just makes an outstanding catch uh leaping
leaping over the fence it was a little hard to tell for me in real time damon whether that ball was
actually going over the fence or whether it would have just been uh
whether it would have bounced off the wall and been a double,
which of course still would have been a pretty big deal for the Braves.
But I'm pretty sure.
I'm pretty sure that that would have gone over the fence if Jake McCarthy hadn't intervened.
Yeah, I mean, I think it's honestly, I really think it could go either way.
I think a lot of people's initial reaction was like, no, I don't know if that one would have gone over or not.
I saw some people in like not to, I was watching on a, you know, a service of sorts on an incognito window.
and a lot of people in the chat there were saying it wouldn't have been a home run.
But regardless, it's still a huge catch.
And it's great to see from Jake who, you know, a lot of people counted out going into this season.
Like if he'd even be a big part of the team and he's been probably a top five hitter on the team so far this year.
So, you know, it's tough to envision how the season would be going without Jake right now.
So honestly, just like another big moment for him in a big season that he's had.
first half of the year.
Well, I guess people don't want to just hear us talk about Jake McCarthy's catch.
They want to hear Jake McCarthy himself talk about his catch.
So we got about this is about two minutes long, but there's some good, some fun stuff in here.
So here is Diamondbacks outfielder Jake McCarthy on what certainly appeared to be a game
saving catch in the ninth inning of this game.
Yeah, it's good to help out our pitchers.
You know, I think it was probably like an overreact.
to catch it. You know, I was in position. All I had to do is like jump a little bit and reach over the fence. So, you know, I'm just, I'm just happy. It was a big situation for it. And our pitcher's really balled out today. So I'm glad we came out to win. Yeah, yeah. I mean, it was pretty high flyball. I think I was playing relatively deep too. So it's not like I was sprinting and like I hit the wall. I was kind of there for a second. So again, like I get the moment. But I think I think a play like that's kind of,
A little overrated.
You're like a double or a home?
I really don't know.
I think it was over.
But who knows, maybe we're just poking holes in this entire conspiracy.
Who knows?
What are the things you're thinking about when you're going up for that?
Is it all just about kind of where the wall is?
Yeah, I mean, I think we're taught.
Just get behind it more than that case.
Just get as far as you can, you know, get under it.
And then it's easier to make a play when you could,
your feet are set and you jump and you kind of know where the wall is.
So again, yeah, it was just, I got a pretty good read.
Just one of those balls that you want in like batting practice.
That's like perfect.
It's not like you don't have to jump too high.
So I don't know.
I'm just happy with the win.
I'd say so.
You know, you're running.
I'm looking.
I also have to see where Gritch is.
I didn't know if Rich had to read on it.
I wasn't really sure where he was playing.
You got the wall coming up on you.
But I feel like in center.
you're a little farther away you feel like you could maybe get better reads so it was more so
just like the you know getting there full speed because i had a pretty good idea of where that was
going to end up that was my first that was my first yeah and i and i consecoed gallops last week
and then i i had one against the braves three years ago where it hit off my my palm and went over
but they crossed each other at first so it ended up just being a single so i just didn't
think it was in the cards for me for a second, but I'm glad I broke that streak.
Over, overrated, Damon? Did Jake McCarthy just say that his game save and catch was overrated?
How do we feel about this? So I was prepared in here to come in. I didn't know that we were going
to get, you know, audio of Jake talking about it. And I was prepared to come in here and say,
I think that's kind of a play you hope your outfielders would make at a major league level.
Like, he's camped under it. He has to jump in time.
time the ball getting there. But like, you know, that's kind of a play that like a average to
above average outfielder makes, I think, in that situation. So I kind of agree with Jake with it
being a little bit overrated, to be completely honest. But, you know, still a huge catch in like,
no one's a bigger Jake McCarthy fan than Paul Seawalt tonight. Yeah, we also, we don't have video of this,
but Jake was also asked what Seawald said to him as he was walking off the field. And he was like,
he just gave me a hug. And you can, you can certainly, you can certainly, you can certainly understand.
understand why. Yeah, I see, I definitely, I was going to say real quick, also Jake is like a, I feel
like he's like an almost big play guy. Like he, he almost makes a million big plays. But he like with
the can say going, you know, the ball last week or, you know, that ball hitting his palm that he's
talking about earlier. Like he, he's always in a good position to make a play. And then it just
doesn't really work out. So it's good to see him finally get one. Yeah. I, I think I'm with you like,
you know, on one hand, the context of the situation, it's hard to call a play like that overrated for me.
Very true. This is a game tying Homer. I mean, this is Paul Seawald's fourth save and five
or fourth blown save in five tries, if that's what happens. You know, maybe the debaques are still able to
come back and win, who knows, but still would have been a pretty devastating moment for this team,
frankly, if that ball had gone over. But you're right. This wasn't, I mean, I think the most
impressive robbed homers are like line drives. Those are the ones where timing it.
up is really challenging. This was like a ball that was just skyed way up in the air, and it did go far.
I mean, Matt Olson has some serious pop in his bat, but McCarthy was able to just kind of camp under
it, and it's, you know, it's not like he showed off a, you know, a 60 inch vertical or anything
to make this catch. It was pretty reasonably within his range. But nonetheless, yeah, I mean,
just an enormous play. And what I think makes this especially impressive for McCarthy is that the
inning prior he made another very impressive catch that was kind of closing the gap in left
center field another big spot with Ryan Thompson on the mound, a bit of a shaky eighth inning
for Ryan Thompson. He was able to work out of it. But Jake was able to close the gap on a ball that
was hit really far into left center field. And you heard him in this clip. He said openly,
like he thinks that play was actually more difficult than robbing the Homer in the ninth. But it just
speaks to Jake McCarthy's ability to kind of move around the outfields and be pretty comfortable
bullet at all three outfield positions.
Yeah, definitely.
And the basketball and football guy says Corbyn would have misflate it and let it go over his head.
Just saying, I don't know.
There's maybe something to be said about that.
But Corbin's not tall.
So maybe it's a little more challenging for him.
Yeah.
And Jake's, I mean, Jake's a really athletic guy.
Like he's pretty much every bit as fast as Corbyn, but at a significantly bigger size.
He probably doesn't have the acceleration maybe that Corbin has.
but like he's every bit the athlete overall.
So and they were talking about him on the radio broadcast.
Like he was the number two running back in the state of Pennsylvania behind Sequin Barclay when he was in high school.
So like the dude, the dude is a hell of an athlete.
My, my favorite thing about this, Damon, is that I'm pretty, I think it was literally yesterday.
Paul Seawald, you know, he speaks to the media after ending his streak of blown saves.
And one of one of the comments he made.
was, you know, he was talking about giving his defense a chance because Geraldo Perdomo made such
an incredible play to start that inning. He was like, I just got to give my defense a chance.
And he said something along the lines of, you know, they can't do anything about it when the hitter
hits it over the fence. And Jake McCarthy today showed that, in fact, in some cases, they can do
something about it, even when the opposing team hits the ball over the fence because Jake McCarthy
literally pulled one back that was over the fence. I thought that was a pretty, uh,
a pretty hilarious connection.
But yeah, an incredible play there by Jake.
I mean, yeah, maybe it wasn't like, you know,
maybe it wasn't the most challenging game-saving catch that we've ever seen,
but it was still a game-saving catch.
It was still a home run robbery.
I feel pretty good about saying that that ball would have been gone if Jake doesn't intervene.
And that wasn't the only really good defensive play by the Diamondbacks in this game.
I mentioned the play that Jake made in the eighth inning.
Christian Walker also made a really outstanding play.
I have that in my notes here.
That was actually to start that eighth inning, I believe.
Eddie Rosario had a line shot down the right field line,
and Christian Walker just magically somehow was able to make that grab moving to his left.
So the Diamondbacks defense is obviously it's one of the strengths of this team.
It's been a strength for this team for a while,
and that really showed itself tonight.
Yeah, another play Christian Walker made was that double play.
I believe it was in the sixth inning.
Yeah.
When fought,
gets a runner on early in the sixth inning.
And then they turned two on a pretty tight double play.
I think it was Kellanick.
And he's,
you know,
he's a pretty fast guy.
So they were able to,
to,
yes,
Jacob,
I am in the frozen tundra of Antarctica.
I know,
like I'm being dead serious.
I have a thermostat in my room because it's so cold in here.
64 degrees.
64 degrees in my room right now.
freezing cold.
So I had to put a hoodie on.
What does your utility bill look like, Damon?
That's got to be rough, man.
Dude, like, it's set for like 73 right now, but it just gets freezing in my room.
It's really unfortunate.
I mean, there are, there are worst things to be happening this time of year in Arizona.
That's for sure.
I guess we also should talk about, I mean, this game not just about the Diamondbacks defense.
It was also very much about their pitching as well, specifically Brandon Fott's six scoreless innings in this game.
He had, it was perfect through the front three innings.
He faced the minimum through three.
You know, I'm sure people are all all up in Steve Ruthume's business because I wasn't watching.
Oh my God.
I'm told that he mentioned no hitter a couple of times.
So, you know, maybe that's what killed it.
I wasn't watching at that moment.
I was listening on the radio.
But like, it's just like the last week with Seawall.
I don't know if you heard about that, Jesse.
But when the third opportunity came up, the third blown save opportunity came up,
Steve fit in.
Seawall has never blown three saves five times in a minute.
And he just kept saying it over and over again.
And you're like, you're testing faith to happen.
That's not shocking that he did that with Fott.
Yeah, I mean, I do kind of get it.
Like, I don't know.
As a broadcaster, I'm thinking of people who might just be tuning in
who don't know what's happened so far.
Like you want to keep people updated.
But yeah, it is what it is.
Brandon Fott did not throw a no hitter in this game.
He did not throw a perfect game.
But he did still pitch really.
really well with six scoreless innings, as I mentioned, only three hits allowed, didn't walk
anyone, four strikeouts, sharp across the board. And let's hear from the man himself. Here's what,
here's what Brandon Fott had to say about his outing tonight. Yeah, I think everything felt good.
I think the heater was playing really well today, and we kind of stuck with that for the most part.
And I think looking at the big picture, it was a great team win. There was great defense. And I
I think that helped us get the wind a day for sure.
Is there any common threat for you between these last three starts?
What do you mean?
That have all been really good starts.
Yeah, I think the fastball velo has been up,
so I think that helps off speed.
Mixing in the sinker with the four seam definitely has been playing very well,
and I think definitely a tribute that.
And I think those two pitches have been great,
and obviously the slider,
off that and I think just being aggressive. That's the goal going out every every time out and
I think we've been doing that. Why do you think the fastball being able to spend so high?
Maybe I'm getting stronger. I don't know. I think it's just that part of the season where I'm
starting to feel good and and the ball's coming out good. I don't really have a strict answer
for you to be honest. Maybe he's just getting stronger, Damon. Who knows?
That's my goat, Jesse.
I love that guy so much.
I love watching him play baseball.
Like he kind of, I was thinking about this on the car right home where I was listening.
Like, as he kind of like made the narrative that the Diamondbacks can't like develop a starting pitcher, like kind of go away a little bit.
Like he in general just makes me feel a lot better about the organization as a whole.
Like the fact that his stats weren't always that incredible.
He struggled to come in as a rookie.
that would crush a lot of people, but Brandon fought, like, just continues to get better and better all the time and is just like by far has been the best starting pitcher on this team this year.
I think that's a totally fair point about the Diamondbacks developing pitchers.
I mean, they're really, you know, some of these guys have shown glimpses like Ryan Nelson has pitched better lately.
Tommy Henry had some good moments last year for sure.
But in terms of a consistent starter who, you know, is pitching deeper into games and really,
has a clear future as a starting pitcher in this league.
Brandon Fott is kind of on an island by himself right now in terms of, you know,
guys the Diamondbacks have developed in house.
This current regime under my case,
and I don't think there's anyone else that really compares at all.
And even you probably go several years before that,
the Diamondbacks just as an organization,
for whatever reason,
have really, really struggle to develop starting pitching.
They've had some success on the position player side,
but the starting pitching side has been a struggle.
So, yeah, I mean, fought after this game.
He has a 3.970 RA.
He got that number under four.
And, you know, he was clipped a little early today.
86 pitches through those six innings.
You could argue he maybe should have gone back out there.
It would have been against the middle of the order.
Tori wound up going to Kevin Ginkle to face Austin Riley, Matt Olson, and Marcelo Zuna.
And it works.
Ginkle has been just unreal lately for the diamond backs.
did give up a lead off double. So he was in a bit of trouble in that seventh inning,
but he bounced back and was able to work through the heart of the Braves order and
get the diamond backs out of that inning. Yeah. I are not the best outing from Ryan Thompson.
I'll see you all bailed out a little bit. But Kevin Ginkle continues to look really,
really good recently. Like I mean, he let's a runner on. But then I never really felt,
you know, I wasn't that scared. Honestly, like I was I was feeling pretty comfortable.
ball with Ginkle up there the way he's been thrown recently.
So yeah, love what we're seeing out of him as well.
You got a pretty good bullpen, you know, on paper.
We were talking about it yesterday with Jordan Schusterman, but like, I mean,
just getting a top end left hand, left handed guy would make this bullpen catapulted
it into like elite level status potentially.
So, uh, yeah, hopefully we get that guy.
Yeah, I don't think that's crazy to say.
And Ginkle has been a huge part of that for the diamond.
lately. If you look at his last 19 appearances, that is 19 and two-thirds innings and literally one
run that Ginkle has allowed in that span. That is a 0.46 ERA. His ERA for the season is now 2.48,
which is exactly the same ERA that he had a season ago. So any of the, you know, Kevin Ginkle is
regressing narratives, at least from what we've seen lately, that does not seem to be the case.
He has been really, really good for the diamondbacks as of late. And, and I think because of how good
Ginkle has been, you probably felt a little bit better about the Diamondbacks going to the
bullpen in that spot.
Justin Martinez, I don't think was available today.
He threw 29 pitches three days ago.
He threw, I believe, about 20 pitches yesterday.
So I, Tori didn't say that.
We didn't ask him, but I suspect that Justin Martinez was off the table for tonight.
So you pretty much had Ginkle and Thompson and Seawald as your, as your back end guys,
Joe Manton, fly thrown in four out of five.
I don't think there was really any circumstance where the debacks were going to go.
direction so yeah ginkle continues to be outstanding and not a great not a great day for thompson or
seawald there were some some rough moments but they were asked you are you concerned about ryan thompson
at all yeah i think that's a fair question i mean it definitely hasn't been as sharp lately
but i mean it kind of goes back to what we've what we've said about seawald lately which is that
if you're expecting the guy to have you know an er that starts with a zero the whole year or even an
that starts with a one the whole year, like, that's just not really realistic for pretty much any
reliever in the sport. I mean, you're going to have a few guys every year who, you know, finish with
the IRAs to start with a one, but it's a really, really small group. And it's not, you know,
as relievers, you only control so much, you're pitching in, you know, such short spurts that,
you know, there's even kind of a luck factor, I think, that sort of plays into that as well. So,
sure uh yeah i i get like you know some concern for ryan thompson it hasn't been as sharp lately
but um you know i think some regression is probably understandable in his situation i mean he
gave up a one run after the diamond packs acquired him in the regular season last year and i think
is he right now i don't have it in front of me i think it's still in the low two so hard to be too
too worried about him right now in my book yeah no i'm i'm not concerned it's two point zero four right now
is his ERA.
So still very,
very good.
And I'm,
the way I see it,
and Sean brings this up,
and it kind of goes into my point,
he says,
Ginkle in the closer's role is too shaky for him.
And I,
like,
bring it back to when Kevin Ginkle was the closer
at the start of the season,
and he wasn't pitching very well.
And,
you know,
that's,
that's kind of,
and I never really was thinking to myself,
like,
I think Kevin Gingles finished.
I was thinking to myself,
like,
I think he's having a little bit of a rough start.
rough patch and like he's going to figure it out and he did and that's kind of the way i view
ryan thompson right now like it's not it doesn't look the prettiest but like i've watched
enough ryan thompson just like dominating other teams at to this point like not not like
fluky type of performances he's going out there and like ground ball after ground ball on guys
and and you know i i i trust him to work out of it i think you know he's not he's not like i still
trust him to be one of our top level guys moving forward.
The Diamondbacks did score run in this game.
They didn't score any more than that.
You couldn't tell by the way, we did this show so far.
Yeah, we haven't talked about offense at all to this point.
And we should probably do that.
Gino Suarez, Damon, did the thing again.
He had a solo home run on what was again, really not a very bad pitch.
I mean, it was a breaking ball on the outside part of the play.
squared it up pretty much straightaway center.
This one wasn't 452 feet like the one that he hit yesterday,
but I think it was 437, which is still pretty impressive.
He continues to kind of be emerging here for this,
for this Diamondbacks offense.
Yeah, he's playing a lot better.
And he needed to because, like, he was playing so bad that it's like,
genuinely like, we might get rid of you territory.
So, like, him doing this is, like, legitimately necessary.
and he was due like honestly like he's due for a good little stretch like this based off of how
bad he's been he's been somewhat of a streaky hitter at other portions of his career if I'm
not mistaken like where he's had bad starts not quite this bad but bad starts to the season
kind of figured it out as he goes so hopefully this is just kind of like the the kickster to get him
going for this year because uh you know second half of the season if we can get even just
Gino hitting 240 with a, you know, with a, with a, with a 700 OPS.
Like that would be huge for this team, huge for this team.
Yeah, yeah, 100% totally would.
And, you know, he's still got a waste to go.
I think his OPS is in the 650 range at this point.
So his season as a whole, like the numbers aren't jumping off the page or anything at this
point.
But you look at his numbers in July.
He's sitting 333 now this month.
He is slugging, I believe, at 7.20.
with that homer that he hit.
He also drew a walk in this game, one for two with a walk.
So, yeah, another big day for Gino.
And they've been timely hits, too.
Like, there have been three games now in just the last week that, I mean, you can't
really win a game single-handedly, but like, Gino has almost won those games single-handedly,
at least on the, on the offensive side of the ball, you know, driving in three runs yesterday
with the two-run Homer and then doing what he did today.
There was a game in San Diego where he was all over the.
place as well. I think you had three RBI in a game there. So yeah, he's coming around. And I guess my
question to you is, are we at a point where we're not having, you know, the DFA Gino-Swarres
conversation anymore? Are we, are we not having the acquire a third basement at the trade
deadline conversation anymore? Well, I think both those questions are easy answers for me. Like,
I think I never really was having the DFA Gino conversation because I just don't think that's how
the diamondbacks operate.
Like maybe that was how you felt personally that they should have done it, but I just don't think that I never felt that way personally.
I'm not talking about you.
I'm talking about like just the person, anybody that I'm speaking to, the ether that I'm speaking to right now.
But there are a few people out there who have, uh, who have felt that way for sure.
A loud few for sure. And, uh, and, and I just think like Tori and Mike are going to stick with their guys.
Uh, and they're not going to cut them before, uh, you know, the all star break of a season.
So, you know, I don't think that was ever really realistic.
But so I'm putting that to bed.
But the trade thing is, like he hasn't shown enough.
This hasn't been a long enough sample size where all of a sudden I'm like not looking at acquiring a good third basement if there's one available for a price that I'm okay with.
Like I'm still looking if there's if there's a good platoon third base option, I'm still absolutely approaching one.
Yeah.
And the diamond backs.
the diamond backs are still going to need a third baseman for next year, presumably.
I mean, I guess maybe there's a world where Gino plays so well between now and the end of the season
that they pick up the option.
Yeah, I don't really think so either.
I think it's about $15 million, something like that.
They'd be paying him next season.
It doesn't seem too likely in my mind.
So it is a need beyond this season.
So if the diamondbacks were able to find someone on the trade market who would be controllable
beyond this season, then that could, that could maybe make sense because you're,
you're helping yourself in the interim and you're also kind of getting ahead of some stuff
you'd need to do in the off season. So it's going to be tough, though. I mean, I know we talked
about Luis Rengifo a little bit yesterday. I looked at his baseball savant page, Damon, after our
show. And I realize that, you know, the lofty numbers that he's put up to this point may or may
may not look sustainable. So, yeah, I don't think there's going to be, did you? Yeah, it's,
there's a lot of, there's a lot of blue happening there. There is. And, and I just wanted to say
real quick on Gino, like, I feel like the way that he's succeeding right now is kind of the way
that we envisioned him succeeding. Like, he, he's, he was always going to be swing and miss
home run, feaster famine guy. And we need him to hit home runs to be a valuable play.
because if he's not hitting home runs, he's, he, he kind of stinks at the plate.
So if he keeps, if he can give us some home runs on a consistent basis, like we've seen
a little bit more recently, like that's what's going to make him a valuable piece to
our team.
And it basically won us the game tonight.
I mean, outside of obviously a dominating pitching performance, but like, you know, we need,
we need one run to win.
So shout out Gino.
Yeah, it was big.
It was very big.
We'll see if Gino is able to keep this up.
Tori did talk before the game yesterday about how Gino has a history of kind of heating up in the second half of the season,
like kind of starting slow and then heating up in the second half.
I looked into that a little bit last year.
He did very much do that with the Mariners last year.
To me, the expected stats were pretty much identical from the first half to the second half.
It was just like the kind of the surface level numbers that change.
So to me, I wasn't reading into that a ton.
but I mean that doesn't mean that Gino couldn't follow that path this year where you know maybe maybe we look back on on April, May and June is being, you know, kind of an aberration.
I mean, not that we're expecting Suarez to have a 900 OPS the rest of the way or anything.
But even, yeah, even if he was just a league average hitter or something like that the rest of the way, I mean, the Diamondbacks last season did not get anywhere close to league average production from third base.
they were looking for Suarez to come in and kind of be a high floor option at third,
where you figure the defense was going to be solid.
The hitting was going to be at least good enough, better than what you had gotten here before.
And I think he still has a chance to do that this season.
For sure, absolutely.
Well, you guys are going to make sure you want to sign up with Bet365.
That's our new gambling partner that we have over here at PHNX.

Let's look at the count, shall we, Damon?
Look at some numbers from this game.
Of course, the count is presented by Desert Financial Credit Union.
and not a lot of offense to speak of, really.
Of course, the Diamondbacks win this game won to nothing.
They out hit the Atlanta Braves 6 to 5.
Neither team had it with runners as scoring position.
The Diamondbacks were 0 for 3.
The Braves were 0 for 4.
Nine strikeouts on the Dback side compared to six on the Atlanta Braves side.
Diamondbacks did have the edge here and hard hit rate,
52.6% for DBAX hitters compared to 40% for the Atlanta Braves.
Ina Jackson made a good point in the in the comments here.
I'm hoping I'm saying I'm saying that first name right.
I apologize if I'm not.
How critical is that switch to having Alec come in and move Jake to left field?
I think that is a that is a very valid point because as much as that catch by Jake McCarthy was very big.
Jake McCarthy did not play left field for the vast majority of this game.
Randall Gritchick got the start out there for the deback.
So, yeah, good point there that that was huge for the debacks, Damon.
I don't know if Randall Gritchick is able to make that catch.
Yeah, no, probably not.
Grinnell Gritchick is not a bad defender, but Jake McCarthy is obviously like 98th percentile
sprint speed according to baseball savant.
And like he's, he was camped under that ball essentially.
So it helps to have a little bit of speed.
Maybe maybe Gritchick had a chance of timing it a little bit better.
Like maybe he wouldn't have been been like so under it, you know, like kind of waiting for it to move forward.
Maybe going back, he could have had a chance at it.
But definitely Jake, you know, put himself in a good position to make that play.
I think we have a couple of super chats here we can get to.
Let's see.
Kevin Haskey, last three series felt like a heavyweight fight.
Yeah.
The Diamondbacks have played a lot of very emotional baseball games in the last, like,
week and a half. It felt like pretty much every game in L.A., whether it be because it was a heartbreaking
loss, which was the case in that first game of that series, or because Christian Walker was like,
you know, joining Willie May's company on some list because of what he was doing at Dodger Stadium.
And then the Padre series was similar. I guess the last game there was was a little bit more normal
where the Diamondbacks just sort of, you know, won that game straight away. There wasn't quite as
much chaos. But the first couple of days in San Diego were also very chaotic.
And then, of course, the first game of this series going the way it did,
this game being obviously very, very close until the very end with Jake kind of saving the day at the end.
So, yeah, it's been a lot of heavyweight, a heavyweight fight is a really good way of putting it.
And that's actually a, you know, I don't think Toro was making excuses.
But after the Diamondbacks lost the first two games of the series, that was a point he made,
that the team, you know, exhausted a lot of like emotional energy during.
those Southern California games. There were a lot of really tough fought games in there.
And, you know, the debacks maybe came back to Arizona a little bit flat. But of course,
they kind of found their way here again over the last couple of days.
I mean, and you're talking about the last three series. Like, really, isn't it five of the last
six series? I mean, we're going back to the Phillies and twin series as well. Like, those are,
those are really good teams. And, you know, we kind of got, you know, beat up by the twins at the end
of those series.
They were opposite in a way of how things went for the diamond backs against the Dodgers
and the Padres.
They won the first game in both the Phillies and the Twins series.
You're feeling good going into the next two saying, like,
we're going to probably get a series dub here against two pretty good ball clubs.
And then you drop the ball and get smoked in the next two games.
And then the opposite for the Dodgers Padres,
you drop those first two games in heartbreaking fashion.
And then you like pretty much thoroughly outplay them for the rest of the rest of,
the series.
And, you know, it's unfortunate that we couldn't get the series win against the Braves here
because it's kind of just another, another series where you're like, ah, we left something
on the table, which is a lot with this team.
Yeah, it is a lot with this team.
I mean, the debacks and in each of their last three series, there have been a, you know,
kind of a bat.
There's been a backbreaking game, really.
You know, you could pretty easily see a scenario where they swept the Dodgers or where they
swept the Dodgers or where they swept the Padres or maybe not swept the Braves given the way
the Tuesday game went but taking three or four pretty realistic given given what happened on Monday.
We do have one other super chat here from I think I'll handle this one.
Yeah.
Yeah, Azy Katz G says bear down ginkle.
$2.
Thank you, Azy Katz G.
I met Azy Katz G at pickleball.
When we when we did our trivia at Chicken and Pickle, we actually didn't play pickle ball
that night. But we did our trivia night out there. And he's a very nice man, met him and his lovely
wife. There you go. Well, he's a, I imagine he's a, he's a U of A alum. So of course, he's a nice guy,
right, Damon? I mean, that's just must be a great guy. Let's get to our Kingsnake for this game.
We very much could have given it to Jake McCarthy. You could argue we should have. But Brandon
Fott was very, very good in this game for the Diamondback six scoreless innings. If he doesn't,
doesn't do what he did, then the diamondbacks are probably not in a situation to be winning
this game in the first place.
So fought is our king snake in this one, six innings, three hits, no runs, no walks, four
strikeouts.
This is three consecutive, very, very good outings for him this season.
Of course, the last one was cut a little bit short when he took a comebacker to the ankle area,
I believe it was his left, his left foot.
Hit pretty hard at 98 miles an hour off the bat of Louisa Rise, if I'm remembering
correctly it bounced a long long way diamond backs removed fought from that game immediately uh i asked
fought about that after this game if you felt anything in the ankle and he said he basically forgot all
about it so uh nothing but nothing but good news on on the injury front for him yeah no doubt and
i'm i was ready to go to war for brandon fought tonight uh jesse had gino before before jake's
catch even jesse had gino in as king snake full disclosure and i told jesse
next time I see you, I will fight you if Brandon Fought is not the King Snake.
And I'm prepared to fight any of you in the chat if you disagree with me either.
So hit me up.
Brandon Fought, what a performance against the Atlanta Braves, like just so good.
The guy's all zero walks.
Like he does it every game, it feels like.
We're just used to that at this point.
Like he walks zero or one guy every single game, Jesse.
All the guy does is throw strikes.
Yeah, he really does.
I'm sorry, I think I had a slight glitch.
You guys can still hear me, hopefully.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
You're guessing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
This was this, you're right.
Brandon fought his command is.
That's always been a strength from the moment he came in the league.
I remember Brent Strom, one of the first comments he made about Brandon fought in the early days last year was that this guy loves to be in the strike zone.
Almost to a fault is really the point of strong.
Like you can actually throw too many strikes.
I mean, there.
Yeah, for sure.
I want to keep hitters guessing a little bit.
You don't want them to just always know that they can swing and, you know,
basically everything and have a decent chance of getting a pitch in the zone.
And I think although the walks have certainly stayed down for him,
he's also balanced that a little bit and kind of learned how to exit the zone at the right times as well,
which is another big thing for him.
He mentioned the Velo ticking up earlier.
I think that's also been, you know, a big development for fought in recent days.
it averaged, I think it was 95.4 or something like that in this game.
So that's up a couple of ticks from what he's averaged this season.
It was a little low early on in the year.
But the Dback slow played him a little bit in spring training.
And you can understand why with how deep the postseason run was and all that.
So yeah, good to see the Velo ticking back up there for Fought.
95 feels like a good spot for bought.
Like if he's throwing 95 average,
That's, that's pretty solid.
It feels like to me at least.
Did you know, by the way, I, I found this out today.
Paul Skeens' average fastball is 99.1, Jesse.
Yeah, it's pretty, yeah, it's pretty ridiculous.
I mean, it's like,
it's like six or seven innings every game, too.
It's not like these are short outings.
Like, he's going out there and just shoving 100 for, for, you know, seven innings.
It's nuts.
Yeah, it is totally wild.
I mean, it's, yeah, it's like Justin Martinez,
is maintaining his velocity basically for an entire for an entire game and i'm actually i'm glad you
mentioned paul skeins uh damon we'll get back to debaq's talk here in a second but paul skeins for
those who don't know through seven no-hit innings today believe that was against the
milwaukee brewers just unbelievable stuff from him um he wasn't given the opportunity to finish
the job i think he had 99 pitches um you know can understand but also that's lame uh the pirates
Pirates wanted to,
wanted to save his arm, I suppose,
which I can understand.
But we did hear,
Damon,
from manager Tori Lavello earlier today,
who of course is tasked with choosing the starting pitcher
for the National League in the All-Star game.
And he has,
you know,
a few solid candidates,
but I don't think there's anyone
who's clearly,
clearly separated themselves out of the group
in the National League this year.
And Tori today did not,
he did not name his starting pitcher,
but at the same time,
he only singled out one person
and that person was Paul Skeens.
He basically said,
I am going to be,
you know,
Skeens has come on very strong.
He's been unbelievable.
Tori talked about how he's good for the game
and how he is going to be aware of that
when he's making this decision.
So he didn't finalize it,
Damon,
but to me it sure sounded like he was
maybe leaning in the direction of Paul Skeins
and Carter.
And that's,
I mean,
that feels like the right movement.
I mean, there's not a correct answer in this kind of situation, but, but that almost feels like the correct answer.
I mean, if you want people to watch this game, if you want people to get excited about baseball on Tuesday in Arlington,
it's hard to imagine a better, a better way for that game to start than with them with Paul Skeens on the mound.
Yeah. I mean, I think if it's down to Paul Skeens versus Zach Wheeler for, you know, who should start an all-star game,
like I'll tell you who Rob Manfred and Major League Baseball once starting in the All-Star game
because Paul Skeens is like going to be like the new face of the league almost or or one of them.
I mean, he looks to be like genuinely a generational pitcher from what I've seen from him.
And like I don't claim to, I definitely like think I know a lot more about position players and
how you're supposed to play balls defensively and things approaches at the plate.
Like that's more my expertise.
but like just watching Paul Skeen's like the way he's carving up these guys is is unbelievable
like out of a rookie and he's he's just massive too isn't he like he stands on the mountain
he looks like a giant he's not only is he tall he's he's huge like that guy is is just unreal
and yeah he probably should be the starter in the all-star game and it sounds like that's
where things are trending yeah he's listed at 6-6-235
He's a very, very, very, very large man.
And yeah, I mean, you look at the numbers up to this point in the season.
He's only made 11 starts because he, of course, did not start the season in the big league.
So he's lagging behind a bit in terms of innings, but still 66 in a third inning.
He's averaging just over six innings per start.
He's allowed 14 runs.
He has a 1.90 ERA, a 0.92 whip, a 202 opponent batting average, you know, just over 12 strikeouts per nine, walking less than two per nine.
these are I mean these are outrageous numbers these are numbers that if you if you put up these numbers over the course of a full season I think you're the obvious Cy Young winner I mean a sub two ERA you know a sub one whip that many walks that I mean he has 89 strikeouts to 13 walks at this point in the season you know I understand people who would be like oh he doesn't he hasn't earned it because he hasn't done it for as long he hasn't pitched as many innings as some of the other guys have but on an inning for inning basis.
he has been arguably the best pitcher in all of baseball this season,
or at least the best pitcher in the National League.
So, yeah, Tori seems very much dialed in on that.
And it is his choice.
But, you know, he said he's gotten a lot of text messages from family members and friends
and coaches.
And, you know, I'm sure the league has a role in that as well.
But it is ultimately his decision.
And I'd be a little surprised from what I heard today if Paul Skeens wasn't ultimately
the decision there.
So, yeah, hard for anyone to get mad if that's the choice.
I'd be surprised if there wasn't just like an outpouring of support if Tori went that direction.
Would be pretty cool for you guys to see Paul Skeens' first all-star appearance.
And he's going to be the starter too.
Like, it'll be a pretty cool moment.
Yeah.
Yeah, we're just going to, we're going to be on the Paul Skeen's beat when we're in Arlington for sure.
You know, Tom Arte, Tori Lavelle.
We're not there to talk to any debacks.
Drew Jones, Davis, and Dela Sandoz.
We're just there to follow Paul Skeens wherever he goes.
We have another super chat here from AZ Katz G.
Then we'll get to an ad break here real quick.
Damon, do you want to take this?
It looks like a player belongs to you once again.
Absolutely.
AZ Katz G with the second super chat of the day says,
thanks for the kind words, Damon, me and my wife, appreciate it.
Love your 97 Final Four banner.
Go Cats.
Bear down Ginkle, bear down Newman.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
just I mean just the two two cats just putting on for the team this year you know you love to see it
yeah they've both been they've both been very good uh Ernesto makes it kind of hilarious comment
I think Tori should go with a lefty opener uh yeah Joe man we all know that Joe Mantiply has
started the all-star game right like I know Joe is not on the current he's not on the current
all-star roster but I'm pretty sure Joe Mantleys is going to find his way there and Tori is
going to get his bullpen game. No, that's not going to happen, but a very, very funny comment,
nonetheless. I do want to tell you all real quick about our friends over at Desert Financial Credit
Union. Of course, if Derek, we're here, he would talk to you about how he started his homeownership
journey with our friends over at Desert Financial Credit Union. He might make fun of you, Jesse,
for buying a house at a different time than he bought a house because our friends over at Desert
Financial Credit Union got him a great mortgage. And he likes to throw that in Jesse's face a lot.
Yeah, he does. I'm still very disgusted by, I think, I think Derek's interest rate starts with a two, which makes me cry every time I hear it. Yeah, neither you nor I, Damon, will ever have an opportunity to do that in our lifetime. So we just have to come to terms with that right now. But whatever your situation is, if you are in the market to buy a home or whatnot, Desert Financial is going to get you the best available rate. I opened the show with my Shady Rays, Jesse, and I run with them.
I go on runs with them all the time.
You go on runs, like outside runs.
I do.
I do.
I'm a little bit of a weirdo.
I'm an Arizona boy.
So the heat doesn't really bother me that much.
Like, honestly, like it does when it gets to like two or three.
but like when it's like 10 i can go i can go on a quick run outside uh and then i pop on my shady
rays and then everybody's like who's that guy running past uh where do you get those shades at
uh because i just like dope in them and everybody looks dope in shady rays uh not only that but
they have uh the the craziest uh you know insurance policy money back guarantee in uh in all of iware

Real quick, before we get out of here, wanted to check in on the upcoming series for the
Diamondbacks as they welcome an old friend back to town.
Dalton Varsho will be returning to Chase Field for, I believe, the very first time since the
Diamondbacks made that trade. Blue Jays, Bbacks went to Toronto last season.
So this year the Blue Jays come here.
So Varsho will be back in town.
Certainly be good to see him.
If we take a look at the pitching matchups for this series,
we have Ryan Nelson against Jareel Rodriguez going on Friday.
It is Yilbert Diaz, the youngster getting his second career start.
He will be opposed by a very solid veteran pitcher in Jose Burrios on the Blue Jays side.
And then we have Zach Allen against Yucay Kucchi in the finale on Sunday.
day. Damon, the Diamondbacks are sitting right at 500 as of right now. If they can find a way to
win this series this weekend, they could go into the All-Star break with an above 500 record.
And that has to feel probably pretty good given what the Diamondbacks have been through
this year. Yeah, given the circumstances, that would be pretty nice. I also just want to say it's
impressive that Yulver Diaz is as good as he is without shoulders. I think that's, that's, it's, it's, it's, it's
really just an impressive feat but uh no i mean seriously like can we get the guy a headshot that has
shoulders on it ESPN or MLB i scoured the earth for for a better head shot and i just couldn't find
anything uh but yeah looking at this real quick like you got to win that last game if you want to be over
500 going into the all-star break right that's that's yeah as clear as can be like that you need zach
gallon in that game to go out there and have his best stuff especially because he he's not going to be in the
All-Star game. So, like, the expectation should be that, you know, he's, he's going out there and
being like, here's why I should be. And, and gives us something special right before, right before the break.
And then that's a tough matchup for Yolbert Diaz, but he had a tough matchup last time out,
and he pitched really well. We'll see, we'll see how he does there. Ryan Nelson, I just don't even
know what to say about that guy anymore. Like, he, Ryan Nelson is like, he's kind of been, become
unpredictably inconsistent. You know what I mean? Where it's like, yeah, you, you get like three
awful games out of him and then you're like, cool, he's going to go out and shove right now.
So, uh, you know, hopefully we get one of those like weird Ryan Nelson just like shuts down
the other team performances. That would be pretty cool. Um, yeah, that's, that's, that's what I got.
That's, I don't, I don't, I'm going to be honest. I don't think we will be over 500 at the
all-star break. I'm going to say we're going one and two in this series.
it's yeah i mean it's tough from a from a pitching standpoint in those first uh i guess you know the nelson
matchup with with rodriguez rodriguez been pretty good for for the blue jays this season
and er a in the mid threes uh you know yobr dyes was obviously outstanding in in his uh in his
major league debut it'll be exciting to see what he looks like back on the mound you know maybe
you're not expecting six innings of one run ball every time uh but the blue jays uh the blue jays
have underwhelmed a little bit this season. I certainly figured that they would be at the very
least, like on the fringes of the postseason picture, like right there, probably in the mix to be
buyers at the deadline. And that's not really what's happened, Damon. They are answering this series
with a 43 and 50 record. They are eight and a half games out of the wild card as of right now.
There are five games between them or five teams, sorry, between them and the last wild card
spot in the American League. Obviously, the wildcard's a little more competitive in the
American League than it is the National League right now. But yeah, this isn't, this isn't the
outcome that the Blue Jays were expecting this year. So this is not, you know, I would have looked
at this series on paper at the beginning of the year and figured this was a, you know,
a really formidable opponent for the debacks. Actually, you know, this is probably the worst team
the Diamondbacks have played since, you know, since the A's at this point, you know,
given the Braves and the Padres and the Dodgers.
Those are all above 500 teams, obviously.
So it'd be interesting to see how it works out.
You mentioned Gallin in the Sunday game.
The debacks reshuffled their rotation, you know, a week or two ago in order to get
Gowan, that extra start before the break.
So they tried to make it work so that they could get an extra outing for him.
And that's it.
That'll be an interesting one, Damon, because we haven't really seen Zach Gowan be
consistently good since coming off of the injured list.
He was very, very good in that start against the Oakland A's, you know, the Velo and everything.
And then he went into Los Angeles and was throwing even harder, you know, touching 98 miles an
hour.
But he wasn't very good in that game.
He only lasted four innings, didn't give the debacks much length.
They wound up winning the game anyway.
But he also, of course, wasn't, wasn't all that great in his most recent outings.
So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see what Gallen looks like on Sunday.
They wanted to give him this opportunity, and we'll see if he's able to make the most of it.
You mentioning Zach Allen's A's performance was like I got like Vietnam War flashbacks from doing the 999 challenge of just Zach Gallen going out there and just shoving a one hit performance over the course of six innings.
Just to make me and Johnny and Bo just like have to feel the pain of doing that challenge all the more.
But yeah, you're right.
He hasn't been super consistent since he's come back.
You know, it's obviously been a little bit of an underwhelming season because he hasn't been with the team for the entire season.
And like any season where Zach Gowan isn't on the All-Star team, I think is an underwhelming season.
I think that's he's at the level where that's a fair statement to make.
Like he's that kind of player.
Although he's only made it.
He's only made it the one time.
He's only made it last year without things worked out.
But he started.
But yeah, right.
I think caliber of pitcher who should be pitching in the All-Star game if he's healthy.
I agree.
Yeah, I don't think that.
Yeah, exactly.
And it's not his fault.
He got hurt.
I'm not saying that.
I'm just saying that like when he doesn't make the All-Star game, something went wrong
where you're like, oh, that's interesting.
He should be one of the guys that's there.
And he's, he's, you know, it would be a big performance, I think.
It would make D-BACs fans feel a lot better if he went out there in that one and just gave
you seven innings.
and struck out nine and the curve ball was working and just like everything you know that would
he gives you a scream off the mound like that i just need that to make me feel alive again jesse
it would be yeah i mean there there's no one that you'd rather give the ball to with a chance to kind
to kind of make a statement in your last game before the break than zach gallon right i mean it
it just kind of feels right that this is the way that the diamondbacks were able to make it
work out with him starting in that last game so um i'm going to be doing it on the record episode tomorrow
So be on the lookout for that.
We'll be talking with someone who covers the Blue Jays and get some more insight on exactly how their season is gone.
Specifically, we'll talk about Dalton Varsho and how he's had a pretty good season.
I mean, he's such an outrageously good defender that he's valuable no matter kind of what the offensive numbers look like.
But he still has really sort of struggled offensively ever since going over to the Blue Jays.
I'm a little surprised at what that's looked like.
So, yeah, we'll be on the lookout for that.
that'll be dropping in the audio podcast feed.
It'll also be on YouTube.
So probably sometime tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, something like that.
We'll drop that.
Looks like we have another super chat here.
I'll take this one as well, Jesse, because this is geared a little bit more towards
Cardinal stuff.
Josh's Fada sends in a $49 super chat.
And he says, I wonder what JV is doing right now, JV being Johnny Venerable.
And then says probably hitting on my sugar plum prince, Marvin Harrison, Jr.,
and thinking about what could have been if the Cardinals traded down.
You're probably right, Josh.
While this isn't a Cardinal show,
I think that's exactly what Johnny Venerable is doing right now.
He hates Marvin.
Is this just because you're on the show, Damon?
Is it like you just bring forth like Johnny Venerable content?
People see your face.
They're like, oh, we have to hate on Johnny Venerable now.
I talked a little 999 too, so.
That's true.
We're crossing over big time, I guess, today.
hold the line damon
yeah we got to hold the line in here from shan as well

Big win for the Diamondbacks tonight.
They get back to 500, 47 and 47.
This was a pretty enjoyable game to watch,
even though there wasn't a whole lot of runs being scored.
It was still a pretty entertaining pitcher's duel between Max Fried and Brandon fought.
Gino Suarez hits the big homer, you know,
a little, just enough drama to make things interesting in the later innings of this game,
maybe a little too much drama with Jake McConvey having to make that catch.
in the ninth inning but the diamond backs come away with a win uh damon any any final yeah my final
thoughts are could you imagine if we had to do this damn post game show and like you know we were we were
there was some you know discussion about whether this was going to be had because the boys are
going to you know the all-star weekend this this weekend make sure you guys keep tuned in for all the
content because there's going to be shows on saturday and sunday and and so there was some debate as to
whether we were going to do this show can you imagine if we went this entire
game we were winning after the fifth you know we had bases loaded in score anymore and then paul
seawald gives up a home run there in the ninth and and we go to extras and we lose in extras i mean
like i don't know i don't know if i would have been able to make it through the show i would have been
sitting here just like this the entire time just just pissed like that that would have been brutal
yeah i probably would have had to do like 80 or 90 percent of the talking while you just sulked on the
other end.
And then just interrupted you.
But why do we keep throwing them out there?
Just like in the middle of your sentences.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's that's about how it would have gone.
Thank you to all of you for being patient with us.
Derek off tonight dealing with a dealing with a bit of a personal situation that came up.
So we had to go live after all of the post scheme interviews and whatnot.
So I know it took us a while.
Thank you all for being patient with us.

And I just wanted to say real quick that, you know, Derek did disclose, you know, the reason
that he, you know, probably wasn't on the show tonight. And I'm sure that, you know, we're all thinking
about Derek and we love Derek. So if you guys wanted to, you know, slide into his comments and just
tell him that you're thinking about him. I think that would go a long way and he would really
appreciate it. Derek, Derek definitely loves all you guys. So that would go a long way.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Our thoughts are, thoughts are certainly with him tonight. Thank you again to all of you
