Starting point is 00:00:11 Feel that. Feel it. Let's go. Ski to you all. Welcome in to another wonderful edition of the PHNX D-BACs podcast. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. This man next to me, occasionally known as EasyE in the office. It's Eric Ruby, the one and only super producer himself. Thank you, sir. I know you've had an extremely long day out there, starting with Camp Tea as early as
Starting point is 00:00:41 anything in sports could start here in Arizona. So I thank you for your service. But it is for a good reason because the Arizona Diamondbacks whooped that trick when it came to the Philadelphia Phillies tonight. 11 to 1. And I hope all of those people that dunked on me on that tweet that I sent out after game one feel very good about themselves. Of course, we do have to discuss at what cost did this 11 to 1 victory happen.
Starting point is 00:01:11 and hopefully we will have some updates for you guys here very shortly from our very own Jesse Friedman here coming from, of course, the Chasefield Clubhouse. But as always, this show is brought to you by our friends over at Bet365. Download the Bet365 app right now and use code PHNX365 when you sign up, choose your offer, and find out why it is never ordinary at Bet365. I'll tell you, Eric, there is never an ordinary Diamondbacks game. It is never ordinary when you are watching.
Starting point is 00:01:41 D-backs play baseball. They busted out the whoop and stick on the Phillies tonight. But again, at what cost, both Cotell-Marté and Zach Gallen exited this game with injuries. And of course, we can't have anything nice. Yeah, you know, it's always the classic. But what else? What else could happen? But let's just take a step back and let's just say, hopefully they're both fine.
Starting point is 00:02:03 It's not long term. There's nothing coming out that says either of them are done for the season, right? So let's revel in this one a little bit. Because, in fact, not to cut you off. And I definitely did not want to cut you off at screw the Phillies. But we did get an update from Jesse and the Diamondbacks that said that Cattell left due to a left ankle contusion, which does sound a lot better than a lot of the things that could have been continuing what, considering what happened to him. And yes, screw the Phillies, screw Garrett Stubbs and his slide into second base. I know that this probably wasn't an intentional injury situation.
Starting point is 00:02:45 However, I don't know that because with the way that he leaned that shoulder in, extra and slow motion when you watch it, it's hard to wonder what the hell he was doing. Yes, momentum carries you. And of course, we're going to absolutely, absolutely villainize any member of the Phillies any time that we can. And this is no exception. because this is known Philly fanatic, Garrett Stubbs.
Starting point is 00:03:11 And if Damon was here, he would literally be screaming the F word so many times that Ruth would never watch this show ever again. But what were your thoughts? Let's talk about that because that's kind of a big story. I mean, I'm conflicted because I just hate Garrett Stubbs so much that I feel like this is a dirty slide. But at the end of the day, I just can't imagine that anybody would intentionally try to harm Kattel Marte.
Starting point is 00:03:37 I don't know, man. I like giving people the benefit of the doubt. And sports happens so fast when you're in the moment, right? Like you're a fan and you're watching and you watch a replay and you're like, oh, why didn't they shift over just a quarter inch that way and avoid this and avoid that? But this dude's got a track record. And when you watch the slide, it doesn't, it almost looks like he's like trying to kind of spear him a little bit. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:04:03 It's the extra shift to move. It's like, it's like what you're trying to be. It's what you would try to do if you were, like, I feel like even though he was safe, it felt like it was trying to break up the play, trying to break up a double play, even though there was nobody on. It was just him hitting. But it felt like that kind of thing. And maybe it's just an instinctual thing.
Starting point is 00:04:22 But hopefully Cattel Marte is fine because that would be an enormous loss. He got the offense going tonight with a first inning home run, another first inning home run. He seems to always do it in the first or always do it in. in the ninth inning, but he got it started with the number 30. You're absolutely right there. Yeah. And he, it's like this. I think he has 30 home runs on the season and 18 of them have been in the first or the last inning. I believe they said that on the broadcast. And they also said, the only inning he has not hit a homer in is the sixth inning. And they were saying, oh, well, we got to see him in the sixth tonight. And Garrett Stubbs said, actually, I don't want him to get to
Starting point is 00:05:00 this. No, yeah. But you still can't stop the Marte Parte, even if you're going to take him out of the game. He's already going to put his impact on it. He's going to hit a home run. And like to me, he's just, he's so clearly the MVP. You just, you, you really, really hope that this is a very short stint because unfortunately when it comes to Arizona athletes, like, they're given no grace, right? And so if Kattel misses like a couple weeks and people are like, oh, but Shohoy O Tott, he's playing the same for those couple weeks. And then Kattel comes back and does the same thing. I feel like they're going to use that against him. So if that happens, then we find Garrett Stubbs. That's the only option. That is the only option.
Starting point is 00:05:37 We have to find him. Okay. And Damon is in the chat just absolutely screaming right now. She absolutely is. Absolutely is. But again, Red Mage says, why not hit him in the ninth once you fall in back in the count? Honestly, like the answer is, Cotele or Tori doesn't hit people. Tori doesn't put out the hit.
Starting point is 00:06:00 Like, that has to come from the pitcher and then you have to deal with a manager who most likely is not going to be. happy with you because he doesn't want to play the game of baseball that way and that's how Tori is uh that's something that you could definitely criticize him about but i also don't like i don't like that myself i don't like the idea of intentionally hitting people unless it's carrot stubs and then yeah yeah honestly yeah hit him four times is what i'll tell you what yeah if he does anything again you can't let that go unchecked you know like if you want to on the benefit of doubt and a lot of people the chat are saying Tori doesn't do that which is right. Mori said he never had a batter proves his word and he absolutely does because yes, if there was ever a time
Starting point is 00:06:46 to do that, you're up to 11 to 1. It's not going to harm you anyway and just do it just for fun. Just do it for Catelle. But even Catell probably doesn't want that, right? Well, you know what they did for Cattel? They went out and whipped that ass, man. Like they went out and they beat him 11 to 1, right? Like it was a close game when Catell went out and Jake went off and Corbin hit a bomb. It was it was like the team instead of hitting the pitcher just decided or hitting the batter. They decided to hit the ball. You know, they just said, you know, we're just going to take out our frustration on the ball. We're going to take out our best player. We're going to smash your face in with the baseball is what they did. Big night for big Jake McCarthy. Of course, we do have to
Starting point is 00:07:24 talk about Zach Gallen. We'll get back to Jake here momentarily and the offense. But Zach Gallen left the game in the fifth inning with what appeared to be cramping of some kind or maybe some sort of growing injury. I'm sure we'll get some sort of update from Jesse here. We did not get an update on the broadcast as of the end of the game. So they were waiting to have the media meeting with Tori. But, I mean, it sucked because Gown looked pretty good tonight. His curveball was working well for him and he was going to it often. He went four and a third innings pitch. He gave up five hits, one earned run, two walks and three K. And I mean, it was, it felt like. It felt like, everything was falling apart when gallon left because that was shortly after
Starting point is 00:08:09 Cotel Marte exited the game with injury and you know you just felt like the walls were kind of caving in at that point I think the Diamondbacks only had a two to one lead and then Jake McCarthy in the following inning hits a home run himself that's his first this was Jake McCarthy's first multi-hit game multi-hit multi-home run excuse me multi-home run game of his career with the two dingers. His second one was his longest of the season. It went 420 feet. That was in the seventh inning. And the seventh inning is where, like you said there, the Diamondbacks just took out their aggression with what was going on by scoring a whole lot of runs. You get a two-run double from Josh Bell, a two-run Homer from Jake McCarthy, and then a three-run
Starting point is 00:08:55 Apo Taco from Corbyn Carroll. And everything looks great right now for the Diamondbacks, except for the fact that Gallin and Marte both exit this game with injuries. hopefully Marte is mild based on that initial report about it just being a left ankle contusion. Gallin might be more serious. Well, yeah, it's hard because there are a lot of people saying that he was on some postgame show saying that it was cramps. But you know, you just hope that's not something that's like a problem that persists. And I know that some people might think of cramps as a one-time thing. But if you look at Merrill Kelly, that's something that he deals with quite often.
Starting point is 00:09:31 And so you don't want to like, you know, don't want to get too far ahead of it, especially when it's a night like tonight. And the Diamondbacks just overall are playing like they're playing. I know that as Arizona sports fans were kind of like programmed to do some doom and gloom and to just expect the absolute worst. So, you know, preparing for for maybe both of them missing some time is, is possibly just good for the mental. But I would say that like if there was something catastrophic, catastrophic with both of them,
Starting point is 00:09:59 I think we would kind of know. With Catelle, with Cotell, I'm a little bit more concerned than. with Gowan because if Gowan is on a show or something saying that it's just cramps, you know, that's coming from the athlete themselves. Contusion's a pretty vague word. And there's a bruise typically, as well, it kind of means. Like usually there's a bruise because of getting hit. Like usually you have a contusion because you got hit by the ball.
Starting point is 00:10:26 That was just a weird situation with Ketellin. We don't really know. Even the prognosis tonight is going to still probably be contingent on how both guys feel tomorrow. but if Gallen does miss time, the part, the thing there is that the debacks actually have the depth. And I'm not saying that it's good that Zach Gallen misses time or that he's injured. But right now, with Merrill Kelly returning to the mound for this team tomorrow, the Diamondbacks actually had a tough decision to make.
Starting point is 00:10:50 Should Zach Gallen land on the 10-day IL, for instance, they have the pitchers right now, the starting pitching depth to cover that without having to make any changes. it's actually an okay time for it to happen. I mean, it's never a good thing for Zach Gallen to be injured and missed time. But if there was a time for it, the Diamondbacks do have the depth right now to lose one of their starting pitchers to injury.
Starting point is 00:11:16 So Jesse's got a couple of tweets out there updating, confirming that Zach Gallant said he just had general body cramps. He doesn't expect to miss time. So we're good. Get Merrill back. You keep Zach. And then 29 seconds ago, breaking news from Jesse Friedman. Just as could tell Mark.
Starting point is 00:11:30 said that x-rays redeemed unnecessary for his ankle, said that he'll need a day off, but he expects to be back in the lineup on Monday. So we are looking at probably best case scenario overall. So let's... Ooh, breathe. Let's all breathe. Because we're just used to this now.
Starting point is 00:11:48 Losing a player right now would just make too much sense to us as fans. Oh, yeah, of course, because we were almost at 100%. We lose Christian Walker. We lose Gabby Moreno. Why wouldn't we lose that gallon and Cotell Marte right now before the playoffs? The sky is literally falling. This team, I have to give them so much credit for their ability to continue to have a new hero every single night. Tonight it's Jake McCarthy with his two homers.
Starting point is 00:12:16 You could have in Corbyn Carroll. You could, hell, you could say Kevin Newman with his defense at second when he came in in relief of Marte exiting the game. Like that was that jump. That jump was incredible. Like these guys, I mean, this team does it collectively as a unit. And that's, I think, what makes them such a good team. They kind of have been forged by fire when they went through all of those struggles that they went through early on.
Starting point is 00:12:43 And a lot of that was also due to injuries, right? And I mean, this team has just kind of learned how to put a lot of that out of their minds and just go out there and play baseball on any given night. The bullpen, bullpen really stepped up tonight. You have Zach Gallen just suddenly exit the game with these. cramps after four and a third innings pitched. And Ginkle comes in with inherited runners and just outstanding, once again. He gives them some length. He goes out there and gives them one and two thirds innings, one walk, three Ks.
Starting point is 00:13:11 You had everybody else kind of step up on a night where really they didn't need to because the Diamondbacks had that huge seventh inning where they scored seven runs again. It's just an all around great team effort. And the Diamondbacks really, really put it to the Phillies tonight. Yeah, and it's fun to see, and it's, it's been a while since I've been on the show. So for me, it's been fun to see over the last little bit of time the glimpses of the team from last year and the team that just never died, the team that seemed to have an answer for everything and never really looked at a game and said, you know what, they're just, they're just done, right?
Starting point is 00:13:47 Because like we even mentioned before, when these injuries happened to Zach and to Cattel, it was a close game. And this is an important night against an important team. and a team that you have some very serious history with. There's some very serious trash talking going on. And it's a sold out crowd. The 50-50 raffles breaking records at Chase Field. I mean, this was a really big game. And this was one of those games that when you felt it starting to go off the rails,
Starting point is 00:14:17 you just kind of gripped onto your couch a little tighter and you're like, oh, I don't want this to happen. But if anything, it just made them better. that's the type of stuff that you want to see is now you're in August and you're starting to see that postseason coming up quickly and you want to see a team that doesn't shrink in the face of adversity because who knows when you hit the postseason, I'm sure somebody's going to have some sort of thing. They're going to get knocked out for a game, right? Or you're going to hit some sort of adversity. You're going to be down three to four runs early. What do you do? Do you
Starting point is 00:14:46 crumble or do you answer? And this team is shown on multiple nights now that when the chips are down, they win. They just win. they just find a way to win and i mean again they find a way to win uh in a different way to win uh in a different way every single night uh more importantly it was replica ring night eric it was replica ring night and if there was ever if there was ever a goddamn night where they needed to beat the shit out of the philadelphia phillies it's replica ring night and i uh of course am here for petty ring i'm going to put on my petty ring my fat fingers my fat snossage fingers allowed me to only put it on uh that's hard on on the pinky ring here but that's a good luck it was
Starting point is 00:15:30 an important night it was an important day to do this this ring this replica we talked about it yesterday i know you weren't here this really is one of the coolest giveaway items i've ever seen a team do i mean i i the diamondbacks they've had stuff uh that that that was really cool and interesting but uh nothing like this and i'm glad 30 000 of our brothers and sisters got one of these tonight on a night where they got to see the Diamondbacks beat the crap out of the Phillies 11 to 1 and remind them that as much as they want to talk all of that shit, which, by the way, their insults, I was really disappointed with their insults. When I was in Chicago and I was in the left field bleachers, people started screaming at me to go back to Glendale. Those people did
Starting point is 00:16:17 their research. These people are just like, cry more. Oh, Cope. You know, you guys. guys cope. You fucking cope because the Diamondbacks are a goddamn wagon and your team now is in firm control of the second worst record since the All-Star break. The Astros won tonight, so you are in sole possession of that second only to the Chicago White Sox since the All-Star break. And you can talk all the shit you want about your record, but we're coming for you. And you don't want none of this in the playoffs because this team is ready. This team is fucking wagon and we'll see what happens we'll see what happens in the playoffs but i still want the p hl y guys to fulfill their bet that they welched on where they were supposed to wear our shirts
Starting point is 00:17:03 on their show after we beat them in the n lcs and that never happened so if we want to talk about it seems like a good time to remind them i think about now is a good time to go in the mention like a good time to do that perhaps but of course we thank so many of you for being here tonight uh we thank the bullpen. We thank this team for being a wagon and hopefully you can tell Marte and Zach Gallen are both fine. It sounds like that's the case. And the Diamondbacks have dodged some bullets when it comes to injuries this season because we've had a few of these where guys have left the game and we were unsure of how much time they would miss. And luckily, even though there has been a lot of time missed by a lot of guys, the Diamondbacks have had their fair share of guys not having their injuries be
Starting point is 00:17:48 nearly as bad. Fingers crossed that this is that case. Of course, again, we thank so many of you guys for being here tonight in the PHNX Sports YouTube channel. If you haven't subscribed to the channel yet, do so now. Sign up for notifications. That way you don't miss whenever our shows go live. Of course, drop a like, hit that like button, HTL, like the show, LTS. I don't know, whatever other three word adjective or acronyms we can do here. But just hit that like button for my own personal self-esteem.
Starting point is 00:18:15 And so that Eric thinks that I'm doing a good job. I always think you're doing a good job. You know what? No, I don't. I don't. I don't think that's the case. But, of course, if you're listening on the audio podcasting side, make sure you're subscribed over there.
Starting point is 00:18:28 Sign up or leave us a review. Sign up on your favorite audio app and leave us a review. We appreciate those five-star reviews a ton. They mean the world to us. Also, we are proud to have Sanderson Ford as our official vehicle partner. And, of course, you could say any of those home runs that Jake McCarthy hit was our drives of the game. but of course you need to check out
Starting point is 00:18:51 Sanderson Ford right now. That's a deep, deep drive. That 420 foot, that's that 420 foot drive. That's his longest of the season. That was the deep drive of the game for sure. And of course, you can take a deep drive over at Sanderson Ford. We're all taking out some of their wonderful vehicles for a test drive because we are very excited to possibly get ourselves some vehicles as well
Starting point is 00:19:13 with the wonderful deals that Sanderson Ford has going on. But you have to check out the dealership. Eric, I know we're supposed to be. to do like an ad read about, you know, their wonderful deals and their financing options and what vehicles they have on sale right now. But I still can't stop thinking about the diner that they have on premise at Sanderson Ford. Dude, it's not only affordable, but it's really good. It was one of the best burgers I've had in the last 12 months. And I can't stress that enough. So, of course, if you need to go possibly
Starting point is 00:19:45 buy a new vehicle or have your Ford service, Sanderson Ford is a great place. to do so because if you have to spend some time there, it is not a bad place to get some food and spend some time at that Starliner diner. But of course, not only do they give back to so much, which makes us proud to sponsor with them. They are family owned and operated through three generations and they have just been a staple of the Valley. We are proud once again to sponsor with them. And they are pushing for the playoffs just like the Diamondbacks are. And you get the payoffs like deals on a 24 Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend, which of course is the vehicle I chose to take out. It is just ranked highest in quality in its segment by JD Power. You also have 0% financing

Check it out there, teaming up with the boys of summer for a final playoff payoff sale, purchase, or lease any new Ford and get four tickets for your family to see these Arizona Diamondbacks push for the playoffs, get 0% for 36 months. OAC from Ford Credit, C dealer for details. And also, boys weekend, Healer River resorts and casinos. What do you say, Eric? Damon always leaves me out. So now I'm down. I'm down. I'm sorry that he leaves you out. I'm really sorry about that, okay? Like, am I not of fun? Does it not look like I would be an enjoyable person to spend a staycation with at Healer River resorts in casinos?
Starting point is 00:21:13 Because I will just, I just want Pena Coladas. I just want to hang out by the pool. It's still very hot outside. That's pretty much what I want to do. But of course, they have an unprecedented level of entertainment with their huge gaming floor that you won't find anywhere else in the desert. Their state-of-the-art gaming floor has it all with over 800 slot machines, 15 blackjack tables, live table games.
Starting point is 00:21:32 And of course, Arizona's largest casino sportsbook. So do not miss out on everything Heel of River Resorts and Casinos has to offer. Why go to Vegas? Just take a staycation. Forget traveling for the... Well, it depends on how fast you drive, but three and a half to five hours to get to Las Vegas. and stay right here in town and check out Heela River Resorts and Casinos. Of course, we will be hosting events there all year long,
Starting point is 00:21:55 including Cardinals and Sun's watch parties and more. So stay tuned for info on how to come hang with us. Of course, we always love to hang with you guys. You do you at Heala Resorts and Casinos. Visit playatheela.com for more details. All right, well, let's take a look at the count from this game, presented by Desert Financial Credit Union, because this one's fun.
Starting point is 00:22:14 This one's a lot of fun. of course the diamond backs whooped that trick 11 to 1 they out hit the fillies 15 to 5 fillies were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position outstanding job by the diamond backs to hold the Phillies there anytime they had opportunities diamondbacks meanwhile were 5 for 11 with runners in scoring position for a 455 batting average so they took care of business there tonight seven extra base hits for the diamond backs to the Phillies two and again no home runs for the Phillies. Those two were doubles. You also had the hard hit percentage, the most useless stat that is known to man, 42.9% hard hit percentage for the Diamondbacks to 34.6% for the Phillies.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Sometimes you don't need to hit the ball hard to score a lot of runs. And the Diamondbacks, I guess, did both of those things tonight. Diamondbacks have been impressive, man. I mean, when you really take a look at what this team has done, you know, 40 and 21 record since June 1st, They are 14 and 3 in their last 17 games. And they have been doing it right now with the home runs, which is incredible because we talked about Mike Hazen, we talked about Tori Lavallo. Both of these men have openly lied to us by saying this team wasn't going to win games by hitting a lot of home runs. That is a that is a lie because they have been hitting a lot of home runs. Four home runs tonight for the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:23:38 Of course, once again, the D stands for dingers and deep. Don't forget that. 36 of the 54 runs they've scored in the month of August have come on home runs, which is the highest percentage in Major League Baseball. Shout out to the broadcast for that stat. But this team, Eric, is something else. And again, like there is something about the fact that you lose the guy that you call your MVP. And there's no argument there.
Starting point is 00:24:08 I don't think anybody on a Diamondbacks would argue that. anybody that watches this team and most people that really actually know ball know that could tell marty is not just the diamondbacks MVP but an actual national league MVP candidate right you lose him and somehow from that point on you scored what nine more runs and yeah just completely unanswered you just go out there and just beat the breaks off of your opponent like it's an impressive effort by this team but it once again shows that this team is not built just on one person's effort. It's not just built on one guy. And if that guy has a bad night, the team has a bad night. This team really does hand the baton off like Toria said so many
Starting point is 00:24:51 times to the next man. Yeah. And it's it's nice because it feels like they want to step up for each other. It's like they do both. They feed off of each other and then they want to step up for each other. So like if somebody's struggling or somebody went down, they want to go out and they want to make up for it. But then if Corbyn Carroll sees Jake McCarthy hit a home run, he's like, I want to get it on the party too. And I think, something that's really struck me about a lot of these home runs, obviously the last two games specifically, timeliness of them as well. Of course, you can't get more timely than ADCs the other night. But even with this game, like you mentioned, it's two one. The diamondbacks are kind
Starting point is 00:25:26 of reeling a little bit. You know, even though his gallon had an overall good night, he was in a lot of danger, right? So you never really felt safe even before the injuries. And then you're two of your best players, possibly some would say your two best players get injured practically at the same time. And then what happens? You just answer. Jake McCarthy answers twice. Corby Carroll answers. And guess what? There were people on base as well. Like the ball was moving, the players are moving around the bases. And then who came in and kept the momentum going? It was the bullpen. Right. So it's like all of this works together all at one. And you can't rely on your offense solely being home runs once you hit the postseason. So, you know, it's good to see it's not just a bunch of
Starting point is 00:26:13 solo home runs. Like they have people on base for those. But I think something you can look at and rely upon and something they showed last season in the playoffs is that they know when to get into the big moment. And they're not afraid to deliver in that big moment as well. And it's not just your best player in Cotel Marte. It's not just your young gun in Corbin Carroll, your rookie of the year, right? It's everybody. When Christian Walker plays, Christian Walker hits some very, timely home runs, especially he's in Dodgers Stadium. Jake McCarthy steps up. Alec Thomas.
Starting point is 00:26:44 Alec Thomas is known to hit extremely timely home runs as well. Like it's so many players on this roster that it feels like you put them in a high pressure situation or just a situation that is above medium pressure, right? Even if it's not the ADC of last night. They deliver. Yeah. And they've been, they've been outstanding. And like I said, they've been, it's just been somebody new every single night.
Starting point is 00:27:09 it's impressive. But tonight, of course, the hero of this game is our King Snake, and it is the one and only Jake McCarthy. Jake McCarthy went out there and did his thing tonight, two for four, two home runs, four RBI, first multi-home run game of his entire career. And Jake's just really come on lately. They showed on the broadcast, I believe it was through his first 44 games.
Starting point is 00:27:35 He had zero home runs, and these, all of the home runs have, happened, you know, in his last, you know, last handful of games. Like, he's just been an incredible player for this team. And six of his 18 career home runs are against the Philadelphia Phillies. Suck it. Suck it. Straight up from the Scranton guy. Just beating you, your own home, your own hometown guy. But, man, the hair looks great. The bats look great. I mean, everything about what Jake McCarthy is doing right now is outstanding. His defense. in the outfield is really top-notch. And I mean, you're just getting everything you've ever hoped you could get out of
Starting point is 00:28:16 out of Jake right now. He's grown so much. There was a period of time where he's getting set down to the miners because he just can't get on base enough. But he's also had flashes of being absolutely brilliant and a stunt too. Like when he first came on, I remember he felt like a filler. Like it was at the end of a really bad season. And he was just kind of taken over in center field.
Starting point is 00:28:38 and like next thing you know, Jake McCarthy the next season really comes on and has an outstanding year and he's had his ups and downs. But this feels different. I mean, we're hearing a lot about the fact that he's been getting a lot of information from Jock Peterson, who we've seen just had an incredible time here at, you know, as far as his time as a DH for this team. He's been, you know, better than I think we could have ever expected him to be for the Diamondbacks to free agent pickup. But, you know, he's sharing a lot of that information with Jake McCarthy. And, you know, it feels like it's clicking for him. It's absolutely feeling. It feels like it's clicking.
Starting point is 00:29:15 And, you know, it couldn't come at a better time because right now this team needs, you know, they need to stay hot. They need to still compete with these San Diego Padres who, you know, of course, continue to win themselves. And they've been frustrating. And it's been a dog fight. But, you know, this team is one of the best teams right now in Major League Baseball. I don't care about what happened in the first two months.
Starting point is 00:29:37 I don't care about the Phillies record. The Diamondbacks have stayed hot since the All-Star break, and they've been incredible. Shout out to all of you guys, again, in the chat. We have some super chats to take a look at, of course, H.H. Rocker 551. Thank you so much for your super chat. I'm going to let you go off about Stubbs here.
Starting point is 00:29:56 He says Stubbs slide was the most solid contact. He's felt his whole career. Zing, he'd be batten under 300 sweeping peanuts out of the state, Dan's post game. Zing. Joke player for a joke fan base. Zing. Go Snakes. And F it, take NLE. I don't know what that last part means.
Starting point is 00:30:15 Met take NLE? I don't know. I was reading that too. I wasn't sure. Mets take something. Yeah. Oh, National League East. Yeah. There we go. We got it. We figured it out. We figured it out. We figured it out.
Starting point is 00:30:28 Zach Gonzalez, thank you so much for your super chat. Zach says, Bell for Walker, Newman for Cetel, ADC for Gabby, ultimately for a little rest for the boys to get healthy for the postseason. Is anyone worried? Not right now. Not after tonight's game. And of course, like you said, the fact that these Diamondbacks have found, I mean, a suitable replacement to step in.
Starting point is 00:30:48 Like obviously Newman's no Cotel Marte and definitely not that at the dish. But we saw him play an excellent second base tonight. And at times, I think that's all you really need with this team. Again, you know, Cattel has his O for four nights. Ketel isn't always the star of every single game. He has been very hot, though, in both the first inning and the ninth inning, like we said lately, and that's just been something incredible from him to not only get things going, but to help this team secure the victories late.
Starting point is 00:31:17 That D-BACs guy, which, of course, is our guy, my, let's go. Let's go. He says this one ranks up there with my wedding birth of my children in game seven of the NLCS. That is Mike Dreckman, ladies and gentlemen, who I think he, he had himself a special little day out there. I saw pictures of Mike Dreckman holding the National League championship trophy and hanging out with Tori was presented his ring by Tori Lavolo himself. I don't know. I don't have that kind of pool. That's a great day. Yeah, that's a pretty good day at the ballpark. It's a pretty good day at the ballpark. Of course, our guy, the breadman, Mark Salara, says, I flipped off every
Starting point is 00:31:54 Philly fan I saw. Are you proud of me? God damn it, I love you so much. Yes, let's go. Let's go. Look at those explosions in the back. Am I proud of you? You know, he just, he just heated out of the top of his head, Mark. Look at that. Mark, I'm so proud of you. That's exactly we should be doing. I don't have any fireworks that come out.
Starting point is 00:32:15 I don't know. That's frustrating. I'm frustrated. But great job. Great job, Mark. I'm very, very proud of you, of course. Very proud of Jake McCarthy. Just proud of this team.
Starting point is 00:32:25 Damn fine night for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And of course, I'm thirsty now. I do have this beer. that I got, which is, of course, a wonderful four peaks from our friends at four peaks and Bad Birdie. But I need some more. I could usually really use a Froster from Circle K, which of course is America's third stop. You get yourself one, any size for 79 cents.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Of course, the temptation there is to always grab the biggest cup, right? But is that necessarily what you need? Do you need all of that, you know, frostor? Do you need all of that polar pot that's 64 ounces? I say yes. But of course, if you want to be more reasonable, you can take a smaller size. It doesn't matter what cup you pick. They're all 79 cents.
Starting point is 00:33:08 Of course, if you join their inner circle for free right now by downloading the CircleK app, you'll get all sorts of other deals. Terms and conditions apply at participating locations. Visit CircleK.com for details. But, of course, if you do, you'll save 25 cents off per gallon on your first five Phillips when you hit up that Circle K for gas. And, of course, we all can use to save some money on gas right now. So make sure to join the inner circle for free and make sure to stop by America's Thursday stop right now.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Also, I have nothing to throw shade about. I want to go individually throw shade at each and every Phillies fan that needed to attack us for pointing out that the Phillies, which, I mean, in hindsight, it really was just picking fights with people. But, of course, I don't need to pick any fights tonight because the future is bright, and it's bright for the Arizona Diamondbacks. I don't know if it's bright for the Phillies, but plan accordingly if you're in Arizona Diamondbacks. fan with a good pair of sunglasses, of course, I could say that you need them for summer. But if you live here in Arizona, you know that the sun doesn't just come for you during
Starting point is 00:34:06 the summer. It comes year-round for you, and you have to make sure that you have yourself a quality pair of sunglasses, polarized shades with crystal clear optics. And of course, shady rays as you cover on that, hundreds of styles to choose from. So you find some that are perfect for your face. Of course, if you order them online and you don't love them, you can exchange them for a new pair, or you can get your money back within 30 days, risk-free. Shady Rays want you to know there's no risk at all when you shop with them. Their team always has your back with personal and fast support. And of course, also, if you lose or break your Shady Rays, even on day one, they told us that
Starting point is 00:34:40 they will send you out a brand new pair. No questions asked, of course. Like I said, don't tell Jesse because he will ask you lots and lots of questions about it. So make sure to just keep that to yourself. And Shady Rays, again, they won't do that to you. But exclusively for our listeners, Shady Rays has given out their best deal this season. head to Shadyrays.com and use code PHNX for 35% off polarized sunglasses.
Starting point is 00:35:02 Try for yourself the shades rated five stars by over 300,000 people. Well, of course, we will have updates here. But again, so far, Eric, all of our worries, all of our concerns are looking a little bit better because, you know, it would appear that both Cotel Marte and Zett Gallen are going to be okay. Yeah. And that's the only thing that could have ruined tonight, right? The 11-1 win would even kind of sting back a little bit if that stub slide took out our MVP or for some reason, gallons cramps were just worse in some sort of strain or something like that.
Starting point is 00:35:41 But, you know, I like to, I forget who it was, but one of the super chats where it was like, hey, maybe some like much needed rest. The dime backs have been so injured this year from all over the map, including right now, to be fair. And that has required a lot of different people to step up. But it's also really shown off their depth as well, where you feel confident in a Josh Bell. You feel confident in a Kevin Newman. And yeah, maybe this rotation for a lot of this year has left a little bit to be desired. But you've kind of put your guys through the fire a little bit.
Starting point is 00:36:13 And then if you get everybody back healthy, you know, something happens in the future. You're not relying on somebody who hasn't pitched all season. Or if something happens in the playoffs anywhere, it's like, you know, we have gadget guys that we've put in before. and we know can can make plays. And so I think it's time for us to breathe and then focus on the positive of it's the same thing with with Gabby, right? Like, you know, you don't want to see Gabby go down ever, but you don't get last night if it wasn't for that. And you don't see one of your top prospects come up and perform in the majors. You know, and that's something that's extremely valuable going forward.
Starting point is 00:36:51 We wouldn't see what Josh Bell has been able to do, which is turn into Barry Bonds. since he came to the Diamondbacks. I mean, he was, he was, he was even on that tear before he came in, but it wasn't a very long, you know, stretch. It was just he was playing well right at the time the Diamondbacks picked him up. But like you're saying, yeah, like, I mean, he's come in and, and at least his production has made you not miss Christian Walker offensively. There's been a couple of times defensively where it leaves you,
Starting point is 00:37:20 it's a reminder of how good Seawak is over there. But Tori's done a good job at like bringing Kevin Newman in, for instance and playing first base late in the game so that defense doesn't suddenly become a problem and they can hold these leads that they've had. They've done a good job of managing that loss without Christian Walker over there. But there's some great questions in the chat.
Starting point is 00:37:39 Who asks, of course, who of all people asks, who's going to get DFA'd tomorrow? And interestingly enough, I mean, that question seemed very easy. And that would go to WX Devils comment, which is, oh, wait, they move up. on me fast. Can we talk about the most improbable thing to happen tonight? Scott McGuff throwing two scoreless innings. It seems like before Scott McGuff threw those two scoreless innings,
Starting point is 00:38:07 it Scott McGuff was the obvious answer there. And I mean, he still probably is, but again, that's what happens in baseball. This team has had certain guys step up. Of course, this isn't a big enough sample size, so I'm sure it will be Scott McGuff that gets sent down when Merrill Kelly comes back tomorrow. Or it could be an injury move depending on if either of these injuries require some time off, you know, and to be actually being the I. I mean, I'm doubtful of that. But again, I don't know. The Diamondbacks have had guys like inconsistency is part of the problem.
Starting point is 00:38:44 Scott McGuff, very inconsistent. But it didn't, it doesn't mean that he didn't come in and have some very good performances at times and couldn't still give this team some good performances. It's just a matter of, you know, the reliability. of some of those other guys right now with the bullpen tonight was great but so far even with the new additions at the you know trade deadline this team's bullpen is still far from consistent still far from yeah the weapon it was as they went down the stretch last year yeah but they still showed up tonight and obviously part of that is is a you know a not as usual performance in a good way from from scott mcuff the crime dog you know like you you you like to rough rough you like to see
Starting point is 00:39:25 that but it's not something that you can that you can bank on especially going into the postseason um but they did make you know a bullpen move and inconsistent is is yes inconsistent but at the same time they've got a lot of guys that have shown that at their peak and when they're moving like they can be shut down right like kevin ginkle when he's got that ginkle slider going and he's locked in like he's shut down right jmart it's a roller coaster right like it's it's it's a lot but when it's it's going And it's going really well. And he's shown he can come in and he can shut some stuff down as well, right? Seawald is a roller coaster every single time, every single time.
Starting point is 00:40:02 But puck as well. You know, like you just, you have bodies, right? And all you need is when you hit the postseason to just have somebody step up. Right. So you're waiting. You're seeing. I don't know. It's probably going to be the guff that goes down tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:40:15 If for some reason, Gowan just wants some extra rest and maybe hit a 10 day or something like that, I don't really see that. but it would make the decision a little bit easier. But, yeah, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Send McGuff down, let him get some work that he's been getting a lot of down in the minors and then bring him up if you need to. A piece of Yoshi says, can we talk about Marsh's Reed on the Carroll home run? That was hilarious.
Starting point is 00:40:41 Also, Corby Carroll with the opposite home run. Like, let's give Corby and Carol some flowers here as well because he has played extremely well as of late. and he continues to get better. I mean, again, he's, it's almost impossible for him to, you know, reach what he did last year in his rookie season. But he became the fourth Dback to record back-to-back seasons with 10 plus home runs and 20 plus stolen bases tonight by hitting 10 home runs. And, you know, again, he has a good chance to still possibly reach like maybe 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases by the end of the year. with the fact that so many of his diggers have come as of late. And should he do that, it would be hard to consider this a failure of a season.
Starting point is 00:41:29 It was definitely a slow start, as was the entire team's start. But the Diamondbacks right now have the best record since the All-Star break. And meanwhile, like I said earlier, and I will continue to reiterate as many times as I can logistically fit in on this broadcast, the Phillies have the second worst record, second to the Chicago White Sox since the All-Star break. So you can say what you will. The Phillies might have the best record in baseball, but I am not giving them the title of being the best team in baseball.
Starting point is 00:42:03 And after what we've seen over the last three days, I think the Diamondbacks have a good chance to take three out of four in the finale tomorrow, especially with Merrill Kelly returning from injury and hitting the mound. They certainly have the momentum, you know, and obviously it's baseball. It can swing on the drop of a dime. But, you know, they definitely have the momentum, especially overcoming what already is a lot of adversity. Kind of back to your Corby and Carroll point, the thing that I find fascinating, you know, when you have a rookie season like that, it's really easy to talk yourself into as a fan base. This guy's trajectory is just going to be directly straight up and it's never going to stop.
Starting point is 00:42:40 And he's going to be one of the best baseball players ever, right? Because he's coming in in his rookie season and he's doing incredibly well. And yeah, that that beginning of the season was definitely disappointing. but he's still proven that he has so much to give every single night. And it does feel like he's getting better as time goes on, which to me it's like baseball is kind of a game of slumps and highs. Get your slump out of the way early, right? Like get that sophomore slump done.
Starting point is 00:43:05 And now you're building your way back up. And I think you're going to look back on this season. And it probably won't be one of his best. But it will not be a, what the hell happened to Corby and Carroll, right? Because that's what we were thinking, you know, a couple months ago. But now he's set up. honestly i will say it was even people that were calling for corby and carroll to be sent down as much as i knew it wasn't going to happen and i was uh not really part of that camp i i can say i understood it i
Starting point is 00:43:34 understood the perspective and where people were coming from in regards to that now what we're seeing is again i mean a guy that still isn't at his best he still has a fairly flat swing and he's still getting the job done with his absolute power lately. I mean, he's been ripping the ball, even outts are hard hit. So I'm not concerned about Corby Carroll. I think things are going to come back from. I think it just, it's baseball. And when you make adjustments and you make changes to your swing and things like he did, it just takes time for it to all click. And we're seeing that lately, but we're also seeing that very much with Jake McCarthy. Everything is clicking for Jake. And he is a guy that, you know, kind of was on the outside looking in a bit when it came to the starting lineup,
Starting point is 00:44:21 getting that playing time. There was even discussions about trading Jake McCarthy potentially at the deadline, which I don't think was out of the question either. But, man, I'm glad we didn't. You know, you want a guy like this on your team. And even if you have too many guys playing, well, it's not the worst thing in the world. Injuries happen, though, things happen. And you just want to make sure that, you know, of course, when someone like Alec Thomas
Starting point is 00:44:44 isn't playing well and Jake McCarthy is, you're rewarding that by giving him more playing time like Tori currently is doing with Jake. And they're also young as well. And I think that's something that sometimes you forget when people have those high of highs is that these are guys that are still figuring it out in their career, even the types of Corbyn Carroll's right. And I like Zach Zenz's point. There's a lot to learn by playing through adversity.
Starting point is 00:45:07 And seeing a slump getting through it and getting on the other side of it, playing well, is really good for the mental of baseball players. So hopefully that continues. Yeah, I mean, I said it a few times when, you know, the Diamondbacks started having things click for them in July. But, you know, other teams, they're going through their adversity now. They're losing key players now. They've lost, you know, as they're coming into the stretch.
Starting point is 00:45:32 Luckily for the Diamondbacks, those that, that, the really tough adversity that they had to face losing several position players in Perdomo and Thomas and then several key starting pitchers, was all earlier on and they're getting a chance to kind of get everybody together and hopefully get this team as close to being 100% as possible. We know that that probably isn't even going to happen before the end of the season with some of the news that we're getting on Gabby Moreno. Hopefully, you know, the guys they are backing him up, Jose Arrera, ADC can provide, you know, that same kind of contribution, you know, while Gabby's absent.
Starting point is 00:46:13 But of course, we do have some more updates from Chase Field. And the man to bring us those updates is the one and only. Jesse Friedman, Thundersick himself, my vice mayor. Jesse, what is happening over there? This was quite the excessive offensive output. And I'm here for it. I'm very here for it. It was a really impressive win.
Starting point is 00:46:35 I mean, anytime you beat a team 11 to 1, like, yeah, I guess, no, duh. That's a pretty impressive win. but to bounce back in the way that the diamondbacks did, right? You lose Catele-Martee. I'm sure you guys have probably discussed the Garrett Stubbs slide at length at this point. But you lose Catele-Marte to injury in the moment. It certainly did not look good. He comes off.
Starting point is 00:46:58 And then the very next inning, you're talking about your ace starter, Zach Gallen, walking off the mound as well. Also in a pretty tight moment in the game, there's a runner at third with one out. Kevin Ginkle has to come in in a pretty tough spot on all. obviously very short notice. And, you know, Ginkle was able to get out of that situation. He was able to escape that inning unscathed. And then the Diamondbacks just completely dominated the rest of the game after losing
Starting point is 00:47:22 two of their best players to injury. To me, it's just kind of a microcosm of the season that this team has had. Now that they've won every game, they've played by 10 runs necessarily, but just their ability to overcome that kind of adversity and respond well to, okay, we're not going to have so and so at this point. know, how can we try to make up for that in other ways? How can other guys step up when it really counts? And the Diamondbacks did that in a pretty big way in this game, Derek,
Starting point is 00:47:50 with a 10-run victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Jake McCarthy, man, he had himself a night, his first career, two-run, multi-home run game of his career. I can't seem to get that right all night long. I have stumbled with that. But, yes, it's his first multi-home run game of his career. And I mean, it's just another case of the Diamondbacks having somebody up. And I don't even want to, I don't even want to diminish what Jake has been doing lately
Starting point is 00:48:19 because I feel like saying like, oh, Jake stepped up tonight. Jake has been stepping up the entire time he's been given opportunities. But tonight was his turn to be the hero, be the king snake. And it feels honestly like every single night we're just discussing a different guy being him for this team. Absolutely. Yeah, it really has been, you know, Jock Peterson's hitting huge late game homers. Cotell Marte has obviously done a lot of that recently. He homered in this game before leaving with injury.
Starting point is 00:48:49 But you're right. It hasn't just been those two guys. It's, you know, Josh Bell came through with a hit in this game that I think really put this one out of reach. Yeah. It took this one from a 4-1 game to a 6-1 game at that point. Debacks were sort of able to coast the rest of the way. Obviously, they wound up putting up five more runs.
Starting point is 00:49:06 But, yeah, Josh Bell has had some huge moments. in addition to Jock and Kattel, we've also seen Adrian Del Castillo have some big moments, obviously, yesterday, and then Jake McCarthy doing big things as well with two homers in this game. I mean, this debacks offense, Derek, has been nothing short of insanely good going back to the start of July. Yeah, it's hard to put into work. I don't know exactly what the explanation is how we got to this point, but the Diamondbacks offense is, you know, it was good for a while. I think we've always since this season that this offense could be above average, but it's been a heck of a lot more than that here over the last month or so.
Starting point is 00:49:46 I will also, I need some updates, Jesse, because we've had some highs and some lows and then some lows and some highs, but what do we have here in regards to the injury updates? Is Catell okay? Is Zach okay? Yeah, so Cotell Marte said that X-rays were not even necessary. You guys may have already touched on that. We did. We brought up your breaking tweet, yes. Yeah, so he's not going to play tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:50:14 It doesn't sound like, but he'll be back in there on Monday. We do have some reaction video to the Garrett Stubb slide, which we'll get to in a second. But, yeah, Ketel did not seem at all concerned really about the injury moving forward. He said it's a little bit sore, but sort of just what you'd expect after, you know, an impact like that. As far as Zach Allen goes, yeah, weird situation in the moment. he very clearly seemed to tweak his groin. You could just tell based on his reaction. Right.
Starting point is 00:50:43 So I was sort of expecting a groin to be the injury diagnosis there. Obviously, that's what Gabriel Moreno's injury diagnosis was. But that was not the case. It was just general cramping. And unfortunately, Derek, the narrative continues of Chase Field being a little bit too warm for, you know, at least for, I guess, not ideal from what we heard today. there were more comments made by both Zach Gallen and by Tori Lavello as well about it being a little bit warm in here, particularly on a night where there were 45,000 plus fans in the stands. Obviously, the debaaks were very, very happy about that.
Starting point is 00:51:20 Both Tori and Zach Gallen talked about the electric environment and whatnot in this game. But the flip side is that, yeah, it's going to be a little warmer in here when you've got 45,000 people in the building. So that narrative continues. and I don't know if it's going to die down anytime soon. You know, Tori also announced after this game that Merrill Kelly will officially be a starter on Sunday, as we've long expected. And of course, there's some history with Merrill Kelly having some cramping issues due to the heat and the humidity inside this ballpark. So, Jesse, I have a 14,000. I know if that's going to die anytime soon.
Starting point is 00:51:58 I got a 1400 square foot house. When there's six adult men in my house, my house goes up 10 degrees. So I can understand a pack. house making things a bit warmer but I mean we we we know that that's a problem with chase field and we honestly I hope we've said it enough on this show but it's not a problem the diamondbacks can fix as much as we want to joke about the you know you know turn up the AC go go you know stop being so cheap all this other stuff it's there there is literally if you knew about like if I told you about the cooling station that cool they don't even call it an AC it's a
Starting point is 00:52:39 cooling station Jesse it's the same place that they get their ice from for the for the concession stands it's a whole thing but it is not a great scenario and of course the diamondbacks when they talk about wanting to upgrade chase field that is one of the major things that they're talking about and that is not going to be an inexpensive cost to properly air condition that that building I know it's possible, though, because we were at Globe Life Field, and it's the same damn giant metal box out in the sun. And that place was delightful as far as air conditioning. Probably the only thing I really liked it about it other than the barbecue spot over there in left field. But, Jesse, I do want to talk more about Garrett Stubbs being a grimy human being.
Starting point is 00:53:26 Now, I know you can't say anything like that, but luckily, I'm allowed to somehow, some way. But I want to get the Diamondbacks feelings on this. Was this a dirty slide when he kind of speared Kattel's ankle there with his shoulder unnecessarily? Yeah, here's what Katel Martay had to say. Any conflict or something you're not to be a barris? No, no, no, no. No, practically no. I think he's a good man, I think he no, he didn't do that intentional.
Starting point is 00:53:57 And as, as he, as he took of his head. He never was going to go to me, me. no, I'm a polotero that's a good kid. You saw he slid head first, and he wasn't trying to hurt me. Okay, fine. And, like, honestly, his reaction being, like, when, you know, when Alex there told him what the question was, his initial reaction there says it all.
Starting point is 00:54:22 It's not a dirty slide, and it's just a guy playing hard, especially a guy that made it safely into the base. Like, you can kind of understand that. It's just, it's carrot stubs, Jesse. it's Garrett Stubbs. And we're lucky that David is not the producer on this podcast tonight, to be honest, because he probably wouldn't let us get an word
Starting point is 00:54:41 in edgewise around the cursed words that he would be screaming. It just, it was a messy play. And of course, the big thing there is, is don't hurt our Cotel. Don't hurt our Corbyn and don't hurt our Cotel. Yeah, so we also have reaction from, from Tori, but just to preface this,
Starting point is 00:54:58 it was interesting. Earlier in the press conference, Tori had also kind of brought up the slide in passing because I think he kind of expected to be asked about it. And he said specifically, I don't really want to talk about it. Sort of giving the impression, this is where I'm sort of venturing into speculation territory, but it kind of gave the impression that Tori wasn't too happy with the slide maybe. And then he was asked a question directly about the slide given we talked to Kattel before we talked to him. So the question was asked in the context of Cattel's comments where he didn't really seem to have an issue with it.
Starting point is 00:55:34 And here's what Tori had to say at that point. Yeah. No, I felt like you guys might take that journey in that direction. You know, he's a hustling type of player. He's a backup catcher. He's doing all he can once he gets on the field. He creates some energy. So it was a slide where he just, he carried over the bag.
Starting point is 00:55:54 And it was what it was. So I don't problem with it. Yeah. And I mean, of course, they're not going to come out and say that about Garrett Stubbs. And I'm sure they don't sincerely feel like he was doing anything intentional or anything dirty. It's maybe. I don't know. I like I don't know, Derek.
Starting point is 00:56:13 I guess that's my takeaway here. Kattel pretty clearly did not have an issue with it. But I'm not, I, based on what I heard today, I don't think it's necessarily a sure thing that like 20, 26 out of 26 players in that clubhouse have no issue with what Garrett Stubbs did. I'm not, I'm not sure that's necessarily the case. Garrett Stubbs has a little bit of history in this regard. I haven't looked too deeply into it, but I believe there was a slide of his in the London series.
Starting point is 00:56:40 Maybe you guys have touched on this in a game against the Mets. So there's maybe there's maybe something there. But yeah, at least in terms of what they said publicly, neither could tell nor Tori really had really had any criticism of it at all. And of course it makes sense, right? because the last thing you want to do is after an 11 to 1 victory where Catell ultimately wasn't badly injured and will probably be fine and not miss more than a game is make a big story out of, you know, accusing a player of being dirty, you know, and then it.
Starting point is 00:57:14 That's a good point. Like, would it be worth it at that point? Right. Like, what's the point of it, right? And I mean, I will say that you and I have both had conversations with Tori or been present for conversations with Tori off the record and have found that his opinion at times can be very different from the way he answered questions at a press conference right and i think that's always the case with pretty much every everything and probably there in all of baseball i mean i i
Starting point is 00:57:44 kind of laughed when we were in chicago uh doing a press conference with great counsel because the press conference was like kind of clunky and it was like awkward and they were asking a lot of questions about the offense, not really getting going. And it was like the same question being asked over and over. And Craig counsel was doing his best to be professional and answer them, but he didn't really have a lot to say. And the answer really wasn't changing no matter how they wanted to phrase the question. And then once all the recorders went off, he just started laughing and joking with them right there about like, you know, well, I couldn't say this because I'm like, wow, Tori doesn't even do that. He holds it a little bit longer and waits until he walks
Starting point is 00:58:21 out of the room at least. But this was fascinating to me. And of course, yeah, I'm sure. his actual opinion on it is much different than the public statement that he's going to give, right? Tori loves his players, and I imagine that he is going to immediately get very defensive about anybody coming in and trying to hurt someone like Catele, who, like I said, is, you know, Catell is one of the nicest, most enjoyable baseball players in Major League Baseball. Like, he's just such a pleasure to watch.
Starting point is 00:58:49 He seems to enjoy playing the game so much. Like, there's just, there's nothing about Cotel that would make him the guy you would target intentionally to try to, you know, pull a dirty slide on, except for the fact that he's so good. And you still have a game to win here. And they did it at a time where this game was still very close and you still have another game tomorrow. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:59:11 After some of the comments I got after game one of this thing, I'm not, I don't know how I feel about people telling the truth about people from Philly. But I will say that this was, of course, a big game for the Diamondbacks to kind of lose that gallon potentially to injury and not know the severity of it, to lose Cotel Marte, and to still just go out there and do what they did against this Philly's team. This is, again, this isn't a team that's playing great baseball right now in this span of time, but this is still one of, if not the best team in baseball. Yeah, it absolutely is.
Starting point is 00:59:48 And the Diamondbacks really wound up taking it to him tonight. Yeah, I mean, 11 to 1. It doesn't get a whole lot more emphatic than that. And in a game that seemed to be a really good pitching matchup on paper for both teams, right? Zach Gallen against Aaron Nola. I mean, that's the D-BACs number one, I guess, against, you know, the Phillies number two. So D-Backs had a really good approach, I thought, against Nola in this game. And it certainly paid dividends for them.
Starting point is 01:00:12 Going back to the heat, humidity narrative, we do have video of Zach Gallen talking about just sort of what it's like out there on a day like this, where there's so many people in the building, here's what he had to say. Oh, no, we don't know. Jesse, I said I wasn't grabbing that one because you guys talked about it. Jesse, me and you've got to get on a better chemistry page right now. I can grab it for you if you, if you want. Give me, give me like, give me a minute. I can do it for you.
Starting point is 01:00:38 I would appreciate that, Eric. Sorry, that's my bad. This is what happens when we're like trying to communicate in other forms, like while we're actively. While we're doing the show, don't pull the curtain back too much. But we do have more from the man of the hour, Jake McCarthy himself on the, if there's anything to his recent power surge. And I mean, obviously we know he didn't have a lot of home runs early this season,
Starting point is 01:01:02 but he's been hitting a lot of them lately. No, no. I mean, I'm not really going up there trying to hit homers. I'm just trying to swing at the right pitches and put a good swing on them. So, yeah, I'd like to keep doing this, but it's not like there's this major change that's, you know, caused this. So you're not like a credit drive this one here? I mean, I think, you know, whenever you're in a plus count, it's you want to take a full swing. But I think at times you get into those counts and you try to do too much.
Starting point is 01:01:31 And I think that means you can chase or get out of your mechanics or, you know, just try to get too big. So I think there's a happy medium there somewhere. You like to work in a weight room or anything? No, no, I'm probably losing weight at this point in the season. So who knows? Not putting on the bulk. I get it. It's, it's, you know, summertime. We trim up during this side. But, man, I mean, you just can't say enough about Jake McCarthy. And of course, the power is amazing, but he has been doing it, you know, steadily as far as providing offensive contributions going out there, kind of, you know, being a little bit like Perdomo,
Starting point is 01:02:07 right, where he's, you know, going out there and finding a way to get on base some way or finding a way to get the offense started. Tori moved him up to the two-hole, and that seemed to be pretty beneficial for him and the team. And everything's just going Jake's way lately. Yeah, I mean, Jake has six homers on the season, and three of them have come in the last three days. So, yeah, he obviously, as you heard there, like he doesn't have a super direct explanation for the power surge that he's had in these next few days or in these last few days. But yeah, I mean, we've always known that Jake had a little bit of pop in there, right? I don't think it was ever going to be a signature part of his game. But he has the power to get to, you know, at least approaching double digit homers in a full.
Starting point is 01:02:52 season. I think we've seen at least that amount of power from him over the last couple of years. And yeah, he came into this weekend with just three on the season. That felt a little bit low given especially just how good Jake has been this season in general. But yeah, this was just yet another baseball game where Jake McCarthy just came out and, you know, maybe didn't take over the game all by himself. Obviously, there were a lot of other contributors in this one as well. But I mean, his OPS starts with an eight now, Derek. I mean, you're talking about a guy like if we if the all-star breaker right now i i think jake mccarthy would maybe be getting like all-star consideration uh you know especially given that the n l outfield
Starting point is 01:03:34 options this season at the all-star break were or maybe not quite what they what they normally would have been but that's i mean that's the kind of season that that he's had he has not only been a pleasant surprise maybe for the debacks after a bit of a down year last year he's been one of the best outfielders in the National League at this point in the season? Well, we are thrilled that the Diamondbacks did not pursue any kind of avenues where it involved trading Jake, no matter what the return is, because, you know, he is, he is somebody that the Diamondbacks absolutely need right now. And he, you know, again, Alec Thomas has not been having a great season offensively.
Starting point is 01:04:13 Both have been very good in the field defensively, but Jake has just been hitting the ball really well. And of course, he's a big reason why this team is the hottest team in baseball since the all-star break, Jesse. Yeah, I mean, the Padres are up there too, Derek. They really are. What those two teams' records are. But today, I was convinced that today was going to be the day that San Diego Padres actually lost a baseball game. They were down, they were down seven to three against the Miami Marlins on the road in Miami. I think it was about the fifth inning. And, yeah, I was talking to some people. They can't be stopped.
Starting point is 01:04:50 Like, all right. I think this is today. They're down by four runs about halfway through the game. Like, I know they've had some crazy comebacks, but this is, this is going to be the day. And sure enough, Jackson Merrill hit yet another late game tying home run. I think I saw a stat that he has three game tying homers in the eighth inning or later in the last 11 days or something like that. And he's the first player in major league history to have that many late game tying homers. and that short of a span, something along those lines.
Starting point is 01:05:20 So he has been absolutely incredible. The Marlins did come back. They lost the lead and then they tied the game in the eighth inning, I believe, sent it to extra innings. And then inevitably the Padres wound up winning it by a run in 10 innings. That's just the way things have gone for that San Diego Padres team lately. Well, the way things have gone for this team, Jesse, is that it's too goddamn hot in Chase Field.
Starting point is 01:05:43 That's really what it comes down to. Gallen, of course, left tonight's game. with cramping and we now do have the video of Gowan discussing the heat at Chasefield. Yeah, I mean, I think it's, you know, in middle of August. You guys know how it is here. It's how this could be out. And I don't know, maybe we had a good turnout tonight. So maybe it was extra people in the building.
Starting point is 01:06:06 So a little less cool air to go around maybe. So, yeah, I mean, it is what it is. I think it's a, we could use it as an advantage, really. to for us just you know teams come in here that aren't used to playing in that type of environment you know we might have a leg up just you know obviously we can you know keep the health part in check so yeah i'm not i'm not too worried about it i like that jesse i like that see zack gallon's so smart he's such a gamer he's like everybody else merrill it's too hot i hate it you know montgomery it's too hot it's too humid i don't like it st louis is not as humid as this
Starting point is 01:06:47 Zach, he's like, conditioning, conditioning. We can, we're used to it. They're not. Let's see which starting pitcher actually lasts longer. In tonight's case, it actually wasn't Zach Allen. But I do appreciate his gamesmanship. Yeah, I see where you're coming from that on, where you're coming from on that for sure.
Starting point is 01:07:10 But I will also say that the history in regard to these comments is very one-sided, at least as far as I'm aware, where the Diamondbacks have had some issues with this. Obviously, Merrill Kelly leaving a couple of games early last season due to cramping issues that he was talking about the heat inside the building and then Gowen today. Jordan Montgomery didn't leave his start yesterday early as a result of the heat and humidity in the ballpark, but he did mention it as a factor, you know,
Starting point is 01:07:37 making him feel maybe a little bit more fatigued as the game went on. So honestly, Derek, I was a little hearing that comment, and I was a little skeptical, like, I don't know if that's really how this has played out so far. It seems like a disadvantage for the debacks and other teams. Granted, I'm not in the conversations with, you know, the opposing starting pitchers on a day-to-day basis. So maybe they are talking about this kind of thing,
Starting point is 01:08:01 and I just haven't heard about it. But they also might be, you know, they might be hydrating an excessive amount coming to Arizona. Like they might be overplaying it where you're coming in Arizona. You hear about the heat. You hear about how hot it is. you hear about our own players complaining about the heat on the field. So maybe you're just out there getting an IV before you come into the game.
Starting point is 01:08:23 Maybe you're just getting some fluids pumped in you, drinking pediolite, gatorade until you can't fit any more liquid in you. I don't know. But maybe the Diamondbacks should try some sort of different hydration regimen. Of course, shout out to AZ Catch G. I'm not going to read this. I guess I have to. He says Kevin Newman, Kevin Ginkle, bear down.
Starting point is 01:08:43 That feels gross. I don't like doing that. We need Damon. Yeah, we need Joe. Yeah, we need Joe. Because I'm not going to make Eric do that. Eric doesn't deserve that. He was out at Camp Tea today.
Starting point is 01:08:55 Hell now. We can do that. Yeah, so he refuses to. Our piece of Yoshi, of course, known troublemakers, says, I need Jesse to talk about the Marsh read. Jesse, he's talking about Marsh's read on Corbyn Carroll's home run, which seemed to be misguided at best in regards to him understanding whether or not that home run was going to go into the stands.
Starting point is 01:09:17 That's interesting. Yeah, honestly, that hadn't really even occurred to me during the game. He definitely did chase after it. I mean, it wasn't like he just stood there and watched it over the fence. But I mean, at the same time, this wasn't like 30 rows deep into the left field bleachers. It was maybe fifth row, something like that. Like, yeah, he definitely didn't have a realistic opportunity to rob that or anything. But I don't know.
Starting point is 01:09:40 I got to make it look like you're giving an effort, right? Right. Like if I'm a pitcher and I just gave up an absolute moonshot, even if it is 40 rows deep, I want the outfielder to do me the curtain of at least like making a little bit of effort and making me feel like the outfielder for a moment. Not just standing there and watching it go. Yeah, yeah. That's just my perspective.
Starting point is 01:10:05 But that, yeah, that didn't even really stand out to me at all in the moment. No, that's hilarious. And you're a good teammate. That's why you're a good teammate. Of course, Kevin Conceo says, Unboxed it. These replica rings are unbelievable. And I don't know.
Starting point is 01:10:20 I felt like a bit of a salesperson yesterday when we were talking about these things. But Jesse, just as a fan, just as someone who loves a great value, I could not believe they were giving these things away for free based on the tremendous quality of these replica rings. They're outstanding. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:39 And the lines, the lines match that. Dang. They were crazy. I didn't go out there myself, but I saw some pictures floating around. And it was, it was pretty wild. They were also, I mean, there were just a ton of people in this building by, you know, I think it was 438. So that would have been a little bit over half an hour before the game started.
Starting point is 01:10:57 I look around and, and, you know, there's probably 25, 30,000 people in the building maybe already. So people definitely got here early. And by all indications, it looks like they needed to. I feel very badly for the people who showed up, you know, There's probably people out there showed up half an hour or more than that before this game started and were not among the 30,000
Starting point is 01:11:19 to get a minute night. So I feel bad for all those folks out there. Damon and I on Cotel Marte Batflip Bobblehead Day Jesse. It was the first time this has ever happened to me. But we were standing in line watching them give away
Starting point is 01:11:35 the final box of bobbleheads. And that was no like you know you want to like you want to panic and you want to just run to the front of the line and push people out of the way so you can get yours and then you realize they probably wouldn't give me one if I did that so I probably shouldn't refrain from doing that but of course this is an incredible giveaway item and of course diamondbacks really made it a memorable night our guy Mike Dreckman had himself an incredible evening there with Tori and the Diamondbacks had an incredible evening there with Tori and the Diamondbacks had an incredible evening on the diamond. Jesse, of course, we know that this ring doesn't lie and neither do the numbers. What do you got for tonight's number that doesn't lie? Yeah, tonight's number, Derek, is 65. This is the number of homers that the diamondbacks have since the start of July. That is a 34-game span. And I used our pals over at Stathead to do a little search. And I discovered, Derek, that six, This is very random, but 65 homers in a 34 game span.
Starting point is 01:12:44 That is the highest home run total the Diamondbacks have ever had in a 34 game span in franchise history. So this team over the last month plus, they've just been hitting dingers. And I don't really know what happened. We mentioned it the other day, the number of times that Mike Hazen has gone on the record and talked about, you know, still speaking positively about his team, but he's also being realistic and saying, we're not the type of team to go out there. and outslug you. You know, we're going to put the ball in play and get on base and, you know, do all the little things and whatnot. The debacks have done some of that in the last month, but they've also done a whole lot
Starting point is 01:13:19 of just hitting homers. And I believe in that span going back to the start of July, the Diamondbacks also lead all of baseball and home runs as well. So it has been just an insane month plus when it comes to hitting a long ball. Four home runs tonight and the broadcast brought this up, Jesse, but 36 of their 54 runs scored in the month of August so far are on home runs. And that's the highest percentage in Major League Baseball. That's wild.
Starting point is 01:13:48 I mean, I just sort of come to the, come to the ballpark at this point. Like, who's going to homer today? It's probably not going to be just one guy. It's probably going to be like two or three of them. And they also have a, they have a string of seven straight games with multiple home runs, which is their, I believe, they're longest this season. So, yeah, just crazy. the debacks are doing in that regard. This team has played unbelievably well in the last month plus,
Starting point is 01:14:14 and it hasn't really looked the way that we necessarily expected it to. They have gone above and beyond really anything that I had in mind. Well, we finally get a day off tomorrow. I don't even know if Jesse's going to do it. He's still probably going to go to the ballpark. But of course, no show tomorrow on Sunday. But we will be covering this series on Monday. So make sure to join us at 1 p.m. on Monday. We will have mailbag Monday. We'll have a recap of this series and so much more, including a look ahead at the
Starting point is 01:14:44 Diamondbacks upcoming series as well. What was that with the Colorado Rockies? Is that just coming to town? Colorado Rockies are coming to town on Monday. That's a trap series. After playing the team with the best record, the two teams with the best record Major League Baseball watches get swept by the Rockies.
Starting point is 01:15:01 That's what's going to happen. But anyway, that's not going to happen because this team's a goddamn wagon and you people know it. Of course, We will be back on Monday to talk about all of this and more. You can follow us on Twitter. I'm at Cap underscore Caveman with a K. You can follow Jesse at Jesse N Friedman. Of course, our guy, Eric Ruby is at Eric Ruby on Twitter.
Starting point is 01:15:18 That's E-E himself. Of course, our show is at PHNX underscore D-Backs, but all roads do lead to at PHNX underscore Sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
