Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX DeBex podcast right here live from Studio K.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX.
This is my snake Jesse Jr.
I got my guy Kyle on the ones and twos tonight.
Very happy to be reunited with him.
And of course, we are talking about a huge Arizona Diamondbacks victory because this team can't seem to lose right now.
Of course, this show is brought to you by the Bet Three.
65 app where it is never ordinary at Bet365.
Download the app right now and use code PHNX365.
When you sign up, choose your offer and find out why it is never ordinary at Bet365.
And it is never fucking ordinary when you watch an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game, folks.
The Diamondbacks win on a Jake McCarthy walkoff tonight.
Jake McCarthy might be the best baseball player on the face of the planet right now.
I don't know.
I don't want Soto hit three.
home runs tonight. So there is some discussion about which one of those two individuals are better.
But Jake's our guy and I'll take them. Diamondbacks win four to three. They improved to 15 games
above 500. One five, 15 games above 500. This is their fifth win in a row. And the eighth walkoff
of the season, this team is a motherfucking wagon. And we tried to warn you. And we said don't let the
snakes get hot, but most importantly, don't let Jake McCarthy get hot because this man is playing
out of his mind right now and he has been a big reason why the Diamondbacks are not losing.
And when I say they are not losing, they are not losing. The Diamondbacks are now 11, oh,
and one in their last 12 series. It's incredible what this team is doing. It's kind of wild because
when you listen to them on the broadcast, even guys that have been around this,
game the way that Mark Grace and Bob Brenley have for the years that they have been a part of
Major League Baseball, they sound a bit speechless as to what they are seeing. Mark Grace asked Jake
McCarthy for a bat. We all want a Jake McCarthy bat after watching what this man has been doing
on the baseball diamond. Not only did he get things early and had a spectacular defensive play,
but he has the biggest hit of the night, a single in the ninth inning. That's a walkoff. And the
Diamondbacks win another baseball game. And this is a big. And this is a big. And this is a big of the night. And
this is on a night where the offense looked absolutely listless.
They struggled to get things going for a second night in a row against this Rockies team.
And I tried to warn you, I tried to warn you that it might be a trap.
It might be a trap.
Luckily, the Diamondbacks have overcome that trap two nights in a row because both of these
games that they have played against the Rockies looked like the Diamondbacks were about
to potentially lose them and they somehow snatched victory out of the jaws of defeat.
But tonight, I mean, Josh Bell had an RBI.
double in the third. Lordas had a, you know, a ground out that scored a run in the third. But outside
of that, there just wasn't a lot going on for this team. And again, this is a team that just scored
21 runs in their final 15 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. So baseball is inexplicable
at times. And this is a series where, again, in both of these wins that the Diamondbacks have had,
they definitely look like at times that they weren't going to possibly take the game.
And they just had to wait until it was interesting.
They had to wait until it was exciting.
This was a boring-ass game at times.
And it was a very fast game.
It was moving along quite quickly.
It was on pace to be about a two-hour and 15-minute game.
And the Diamondbacks just happened to make it a little bit longer with that incredible ninth inning.
I don't, you know, Jesse's not here.
So Jesse doesn't like it when I pull the curtain back too much.
my man Kyle can attest to this.
I refused to even write a headline or pick a thumbnail because I was like, no, I'm not
going to do it.
And I explained to Kyle all of the reasons why I didn't want to do.
I was like, because nothing's happened in this game.
I can't think of anything fun to write.
They're losing, so I'm not happy about that.
But I also know that this team does what it does in the ninth inning lately.
So I cannot count on anything being set in stone until we get there.
Yeah, you were talking about it like.
seven or eighth inning.
You're like, I don't know what to write here.
I can't get started.
Like,
I want to get started on my work and I just can't get started on my work.
I know.
And then all of a sudden,
ninth inning comes around and Diamondbacks,
they just snakes are alive.
Snakes alive.
They were alive.
Live in the ninth inning.
And it's wild too because we were even talking about the quality of the at-bats there.
I mean,
the Diamondbacks did their thing throughout this game.
They put up some decent at-bats sporadically throughout this one.
But it definitely wasn't a good night at the dish
for this team. And then you get to the ninth inning and you see this team just putting together
some of the best at bats we've seen all day long. You have Corbyn Carroll with one out getting that
triple his 11th of the season. And that's really what got everything going. You know, Corbyn Carroll is
just 90 feet away at this point. The Diamondbacks are down three to two. They have a very good
chance of tying it here. And then Kevin Newman, who has contributed quite a bit in Catele's
absence has a really bad at bat, just a really bad at bat that wasn't productive.
You get down to your final two out or final at bat is essentially your two outs.
ADC walks shows a lot of maturity there for a rookie in a big situation.
Jake talked about it after this game, but I think he was right when he said it's harder to
sit there and take those pitches and walk than it is, you know, to swing the bat, right?
And of course, I just chastised Kevin Newman there for a bat at bat where he didn't really swing a lot.
But, you know, ADC definitely showed a great maturity there in that final at bat.
And then you had Geraldo Perdomo, of course, also walking and doing what he does, contributing late and getting things going.
And then Jake McCarthy with a two RBI single with the bases loaded, walk off winner.
And there's just something magical about this team.
There's just something like it's almost all happening.
It's like the magic from the postseason last year, but it's just happening earlier now.
And I mean, the Diamondbacks have won, like I said, five games in a row for the first time this season.
The last time they won five in a row was last September when they were making their final push for the playoffs.
And they had a nice stretch there.
I think they beat the Cubs.
And I mean, this was just an incredible night.
Diamondbacks again, they win their ninth straight series.
it is tied for the second longest streak in franchise history.
They're also 11-0-1 dating back throughout the entire month of July.
And now the half, I mean, we keep getting to the point where we get into a month like this,
where the Diamondbacks find success.
And I remember this happening in July where as the month goes on, the success continues.
They keep beating teams.
They keep winning games.
And you find yourself looking up and instead of saying, well, like, it's still just, you know,
like we're still only just into the month.
Like we're almost halfway into August and the Diamondbacks still haven't lost a series.
And I mean, this team, again, they find a way to win.
They find a different way to win.
Calvin and I are on the same page here in the comments.
Calvin says finding ways to win.
They just always find a way to win.
And it's becoming to the point where it's somebody different every single night.
Again, Jake McCarthy has been that guy quite a bit.
We say it's someone every night.
But Jake McCarthy has just, you know, continued.
to be that guy. This was Jake McCarthy's first career walkoff. And that doesn't even seem right
because the way he's been playing lately is I would swear that Jake has had three walkoffs over the
course of the last month. But this was his first career walkoff according to the Diamondback.
So, you know, Jake, amazing job tonight. Great job by this team overall. And of course,
we got to give credit where credit is due to the pitching. Eduardo Rodriguez had himself a very
similar outing to his first outing since returning from injury.
His fastball maxed out around 92.7 miles an hour and averaged around 91.3.
He was fine.
In fact, he was effective.
He got a lot of soft contact.
He got a lot of whiffs.
He got 11 whiffs.
Four on the four seam four on the changeup.
He got some on the cutter as well.
And he just allowed a couple of dinks that kind of turned into runs.
I mean, the third inning, he got into a little trouble.
But again, he showed that that.
ability to bounce back after having that bad
inning gave the Diamondbacks two more innings
after that. Overall, he gave the Diamondbacks
five innings pitch, six hits,
three earn runs, one walk,
five strikeouts. Nothing
exciting, but also
just a very
performance
from a starting pitcher that allows your
team a chance to win, basically. And that's
what Eduardo Rodriguez
gives you consistently. He's
not going to go out there and wow you with
the numbers. Again, I think on the broadcast,
they said you can go ahead and turn off the radar gun and they're right, right?
But he was effective tonight and he did a great job of giving that Diamondbacks chance to win.
More importantly, the bullpen deserves their flowers.
They absolutely deserve their flowers because they held strong after Erod exited.
And this was such a tight game that allowing one more run could have made the difference here
in regards to winning or losing this game.
Floro goes out there, gives them an inning of work, one strikeout.
Ginkle, two strikeouts, one walk, and his inning of work.
And then Paul Seawald, who, again, they talked about on the broadcast, right?
They talked about how Paul Seawald, you know, kind of accepted this role.
And I think they even brought up that perhaps he could have requested a trade,
maybe if he was a different type of player.
No, he couldn't have because Paul Seawald's in a very difficult position.
And honestly, he's kind of at the will of the Arizona Diamondbacks in this situation.
Paul Seawald is a guy that his contract is up at the end of the year,
and I'm very, I'm certain he would like to go get that closer money with another team
or maybe even stay here with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
I'm not saying that necessarily he's going to leave,
but whatever he explores in free agency,
I feel like he's going to go out there and try to get closer money,
not middle reliever money like he's currently trying to get, right?
So Paul Seawald being moved out of the closer position after the trade deadline
kind of made it so that he didn't really have a lot of cards to play there when it came to.
Let's just say he decided to go that round.
Instead, he's been very good for this team in this role.
And honestly, we see him moving a little bit more and more towards later in the game,
more towards those high leverage situations.
And he's still doing his thing.
Tonight, one inning pitched, had two strikeouts, zeros across the board.
In his last five outings, Paul Sewell, is five innings pitch,
two hits allowed, zero earn runs, three walks, five strikeouts.
What's really crazy about what he's doing lately is we used to joke that Paul Seawald
needed to be in a closed situation and a save situation, save opportunity in order for him
to be effective in order for BM to be as good as he was.
And now it's almost the opposite.
Ever since moving out of that role as their closer, Paul Seawald has been very good for
this team.
And of course, I'm sure his days,
in that role are not over just yet.
But yeah, Joe Mantiply also excellent tonight.
He came out and again, held strong one inning of work, one strike out, no hits,
no runs loud, no walk.
So this bullpen, I mean, the entire bullpen tonight could probably be a fine candidate
for Kingsnake because without them, without them holding this game close,
the Diamondbacks don't have a chance there in the ninth inning.
That's something that we very much criticized about Tori Lavalvo.
when this team, this exact same team that's playing this incredible baseball,
went on this weird stretch earlier in the season of when they were down by two runs,
they were basically done for.
It was a wrap.
They could not come back from a two run deficit.
And they were basically at one game, I think, in 56 games before they started to turn things around
of being down by two runs or more and losing the ball game.
And now this team is completely different.
I'm sure many of you out there feel exactly.
like me, what I was just describing to Kyle, the conversation we were having about me refusing
to try to even come up with a thumbnail in the headline until this game was settled.
It was because of the belief in this team right now.
And just like at one point, we absolutely believed if they were down by two runs that they
were going to lose that goddamn baseball game, we believe now that this team can overcome
any deficit.
And it makes it fun to watch this team.
But they are rewarding us as fans for having that.
belief in them by actually doing the damn thing, right? Like, it's a two-way street here and the belief
is made by the fact that this team has made us believe. And they have shown us that there is no
deficit, really. That's too big for them to overcome and come back from. The answer backs are backs.
The never say die backs are backs. Everything about this team right now is back. The backs are back. This
team is back. This team is a wagon. And I will tell you right now, I have no problem saying the
Arizona Diamondbacks are the best team in Major League Base.
baseball right now. They are the best team in baseball. And I mean, this series with the Rockies has
kind of proved that no matter how many runs you put up against a team like the Phillies, and no matter
how good or bad they are record-wise, you can still come into a series like this against the Rockies
and struggle, right? And it felt very much like that was what was going to happen in both of these
games, but instead the Diamondbacks somehow find a way to win in both of these situations. Last
night was less exciting in game one and we'll talk about that here shortly but this team is a
wagon and man it's a lot of fun to watch and i'm having uh the time of my life getting a chance to
cover this team doing what it's doing right now because it's just fun it is just fun this game
got fun at one point but wasn't so fun for a lot of it and that's fine but not every baseball
game is going to just be chock full of excitement and we all know that but uh this show of course
is chock full of excitement.

All right. Well, of course, this one, another funny game. When we look at the numbers from this one,
Let's take a look at the count presented by Desert Financial Credit Union.
And this one, the Diamondbacks, oh, that is not the correct.
Can we throw that one up there again?
Just be, look at that game.
Wow, that's just a fun one to revisit real fast while we had it up there,
but we could take that one down.
Oh, man.
All right, here's what we got for tonight's game.
Arizona Diamondbacks outscored the Rockies four to three.
They out hit the Rockies nine to six.
Runners in scoring position,
Rockies were three for seven to the Diamondbacks, two for nine.
That one most important runner in scoring position coming there off of Jake McCarthy's bat.
429 batting average for the Rockies to the Diamondbacks 222.
Both teams had three extra base hits.
And the Rockies had one of the lowest hard hit percentages of the year at 21.7% to the Diamondbacks 39.3%.
So the Diamondbacks were hitting ball.
They just didn't do much with it tonight.
Of course, there's absolutely no question about who our Kingsnake is.
I think everybody would agree that Jake McCarthy is the best baseball player on the planet.
I might actually rename Jesse Jr. to Jake McCarthy Jr. here around my neck for everything
that Jake has done for this team lately. But Rake McCarthy is three for five in this game,
three doubles, two RBI, and obviously the most important one being that walkoff game winner.
Look at his hair flowing there in this image. This is just incredible.
By the way, shout out to everybody at PH&X all the time.
You guys know that.
But shout out to Danielle for being out there.
Danielle Cortez was out there taking some photos for us.
And of course, I don't know, have we done the official welcome back Kyle thing on this show?
I don't know if we have officially.
But I don't think so.
Our guy, Kyle, is with us now full time.
And I'm very excited to have Kyle Cooper here.
Of course, you have done an excellent job.
you were uh did some amazing videography work for us and i mean just been a great producer man so
it's uh it's always thrilling to have some new faces joining us and of course uh you know we're
we're always expanding around here so that's fun uh but taking a look back at game one i just want
to say that the diamond backs in that one also found a way to win they won game one of this
series and that's how they already won uh this this uh series overall look going for the sweep tomorrow
But yesterday was another one of those weird games
where the two most important base runners
or runs scored were off of wild pitches late in the game
by the Rockies kind of shooting themselves in the foot.
Brandon Fought was absolutely amazing in that game,
striking out 11 with zero walks.
He tied a career high with those 11 strikeouts and zero walks.
Second time he's done that.
But again, it was another night where the offense really couldn't do much.
Jake McCarthy last night records his third consecutive multi-hit game
and multi-RBI effort
and fourth in his last five games.
Tonight would have been his fourth consecutive one in a row
and his fifth in his last six games.
So Jake has just been outstanding.
And again, he did it for the team on last night.
He did it again tonight.
Kevin Newman, also another guy that,
due to Cattell Marte having to leave yesterday's game
due to that re-agravating that ankle injury,
he came off the bench after Cattel left the game.
And he went two for three with two runs,
So it was, you know, it's Kevin Newman, Jake McCarthy.
These guys have stepped up and been a big reason why this team continues to stay on the winning path right now.
But Justin Martinez, he collected his third save in the last week yesterday.
So that was another great outcome from that game.
And, you know, again, it was just another weird game where the Diamondbacks offense really wasn't rolling in the right direction.
But somehow before the end of the game, they found a way.
to get those two extra runs go up ahead on the Rockies and win the game by a score five to four.
So I really can't explain what is happening to this team right now.
And I mean, it's just a whole lot of fun to watch.
But hopefully somebody that can shine a little bit more light on a lot of things,
including maybe some updates on Cattell Marte's injury.
I know we were waiting for some MRI results that the team did not have as of the start of the game,
as well as just everything that's been going on with Jake McCarthy and this team.
We got Jesse Friedman here coming from the ballpark.
We got Jesse here soon.
Jesse will be here shortly.
Where's he at?
No, no worries.
No worries.
We're also on the record now officially, and Jesse will love that as well.
But man, this team, I'll tell you this much.
I didn't expect this team to go on this kind of role.
And again, with the teams that they're playing now,
including these upcoming series beyond the Rockies,
there's a chance for them to stack a lot of wins,
a lot of wins that could be very important for this team
once the end of the season comes around.
The San Diego Padres don't seem to want to lose baseball games either.
I don't know what's more wild is the fact that the Padres
and the Diamondbacks are.
both on the role that they're on or the fact that like neither one of these teams can really
gain like gain any separation from the other one considering that we're both in the NL West
together. We're both in this wild card race together. And yeah, it's just, things are very close.
And Padres are the thing that are ruined. We should be on an ultimate high right now,
watching this Diamondbacks team just soar past the competition. But instead we have to have
another team reminding us that baseball is what it is, just like those wonderful hard hit
percentages. But I think we do have Jesse Friedman here now joining us from the ballpark. Jesse,
hey. Another night where the Diamondbacks figure out a way to win somehow. I was talking to you
on text messages that this game kind of sucked. And it was mostly because not a lot was happening
in it in either direction, really, for either team. It was just kind of moving quickly and some runs
had scored, but for the most part, even the, even the runs had scored weren't extraordinarily
interesting. It was just, it was just a baseball game that was happening until the ninth inning.
Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, I mean, being here at the ballpark that Chase Field was a pretty
lifeless place throughout about 90, 90, 95 percent of this baseball game, Derek. I'm not going to lie.
There was not a whole lot of energy in this ballpark. Obviously, the, you know, the crowd, you're not
drawing exactly the same way that you were for a Philly.
weekend series with, you know, the Rockies here opening up the week.
But so, yeah, I think there were 19,000, something like that in the stands today.
But they did get loud, Derek.
They did get loud in the ninth inning when Corbyn Carroll just sort of gave the diamond
backs a jolt of energy with that triple with one out in that frame.
And at that point, you figured the diamondbacks had a pretty decent chance, at least to get
the game even, right?
A runner at third with one out, that's a situation where, you know, if things go well,
if you're able to execute, you should be able to get at least that tying run across.
And of course, the debacks wound up doing more than that.
Didn't necessarily look great for them, though, right?
Kevin Newman comes up and strikes out.
You've got that man at third with two outs.
And then we saw Adrian Del Castillo come up and pinch hit for the diamond backs.
He worked a walk.
Heraldo Pardomo, a really, really nice at bat.
He worked a walk as well, fouled off some tough pitches.
And then it sets the table for who else, but Jake McCarthy to,
notch his third hit of the game. He has 13 hits, I believe it is in his past six games,
I want to say. It's five or six games. But I do, I knew, I know for sure that he has 15 RBI in his
past six games, which is utterly outrageous. And J. Wageous.
Continues to do the thing. So there you go. Like, I think the one part about this is that we have
seen Jake McCarthy play like this for a stretch at times in his career. But when I say a stretch,
I mean three games, maybe four games, right? I don't even know if they would all be consecutively
in a row. Like, Jake has just been so good for this team. It's just amazing to me. He had that
amazing grab there early on in the game as well. I mean, he's been doing it on both sides of the ball.
And I just can't say enough about how Jake has suddenly become the best baseball player on this team right now.
Yeah, I mean, I don't think that's really hyperbole.
I mean, there's a lot of players playing really well.
But Jake McCarthy is in the lineup every single day, right?
Because he's hitting righties and he's certainly hitting lefties.
We've talked about that a lot over the course of the season.
And at a time where the Diamondbacks are down some key bats, right?
Christian Walker is obviously out.
Gabriel Moreno as well.
Jake and Cattell certainly will talk more about him in a second.
Jake McCarthy has stepped right up into the number two spot in the lineup and given you really
everything you could have possibly hoped for and more.
I mean, Jake McCarthy has been extraordinarily good.
It is 13 hits in his last 16 games, 15 RBI, as I said earlier in that span.
It's utterly ridiculous.
I mean, 15 RBI over a six game span.
Like there are some very, very good hitters in baseball that I bet you have never had 15
RBI in a six-game span.
So Jake is not only coming through and getting on base,
but he's coming through in really,
really big situations.
And what better way to show that than with a two-out,
two-strike,
bases loaded,
you know,
walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning?
It's hard not to be on a high after beating the two teams,
best teams in baseball.
And I know you,
for instance,
didn't believe in the idea,
of necessarily a trap game with the Rockies.
But it's just kind of like a thing where we're,
I mean,
it's inexplicable, right?
You know,
when this team scored 21 runs over the last 15 innings
against the Phillies,
which is the best team in baseball,
arguably.
And you have suddenly an inability to really generate much offense
against this Rockies team that really hasn't.
one based on close games and keeping their opponents low scoring, right?
Usually it's just kind of a shootout anytime you play the Rockies.
So it's just it's a wild thing that the Diamondbacks that were playing so well
still had to find a different way to win here against the Rockies and a different way
in both of these games that they've played against them.
But yet they still found a way to play even with kind of, I guess, the ball bouncing
their way in game one with those two wild pitches.
but tonight it was something similar where all of a sudden this team that didn't really put together many good at bats throughout this game suddenly was putting together some of the most patient at bats we've ever seen in the ninth inning.
Yeah, and I, you know, I think Austin Gomber was pretty good in this game.
He was.
He was.
He was.
One of the better starts he's had this season.
I do think the Diamondbacks were getting a little bit unlucky at the same time.
I didn't see what the expected batting average was at the moment that Austin Gomber left this game.
but I do know it was higher than 300.
There were some blind drives that were hit right at guys.
Their expected batting average for the game was 329.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, that's pretty good.
And it's not like that was just all against Victor Vodnick in the ninth inning.
The debacks, I think there was some tough luck maybe throughout the game.
You know, Jock Peterson comes up as a pinch hitter.
And the very first pitch he sees, he hits 107.7 miles an hour off the bat in a line.
and it's just right at the Rockies right fielder.
And just sort of, that's sort of the game that it was.
When that happened, I said it in that moment.
Like, that sort of encapsulates how this game is gone for the Diamondbacks,
where they just were not really able to string together hits the way that they needed to.
But yeah, I mean, at the same time, I think the bullpen for the Diamondbacks also deserves a shout out.
I'm sure you've probably touched on that already.
But four scoreless innings, not even allowing a hit.
the Rockies did not have a hit after the third inning of this game.
Eduardo Rodriguez retired the final seven batters he faced.
Then the bullpen came in and I think Kevin Ginkle walked a guy.
But other than that, the bullpen did not allow a single base runner.
So that was also really important for this for this Diamondbacks team to be able to keep the deficit right there at one run.
And it felt like just a matter of time with how productive this offense has been over the last few weeks.
They were going to find a way to at least put.
push across a run to tie and get it into extra innings.
And of course, Jake McCarthy winds up doing one more than that with his hit in the ninth.
Jake won his playing time.
And understandably so, I don't think that there's any doubt about that.
We all knew that he was playing well.
But other guys that have been stepping up for this team have been kind of the replacements.
We've talked about Josh Bell, again, contributing again tonight with another RBI double himself.
Kevin Newman stepping in place of Catele-Marté and contributing in these two games.
And Kevin Newman just being out there defensively and being a really good second basement for this team.
Like the Diamondbacks have been very fortunate in the way that they've been able to find a replacement for those guys that they've lost that has been able to step up and just be such a big part of why this team has been able to remain on the role that they're on.
I mean, in some cases, you could even say Josh Bell has been at least over, you know, a stretch.
It's a short stretch.
It's not very long that he's been a part of this team,
but still a reasonable amount of time to take a look at his body of work
and say, like, he has been as consistent,
if not maybe even a little bit more consistent than Christian Walker was offensively, right?
So it's like, it's, it's, you can say.
Christian Walker goes through his streaks as well.
But Josh Bell is definitely one of those guys that, again,
he's a big reason why himself,
why this team has continued to find a way to win.
And then they did it again tonight.
What's up with Catea, though?
Do we have any updates yet on his MRI?
Because I know as of the start of the game, there was no updates.
Yeah, Catelle Marte's day-to-day.
A couple people in the chat might have seen some of the tweets that went out.
He is day-to-day.
He's not going on the injured list, but he does have a low-grade left ankle sprain.
That's what Tori told us after the game.
So it sounds like he is not going to be in the lineup tomorrow,
but Tori said he's hopeful that Cotel could maybe be available off the bench at the very least.
I think this is interesting, Derek.
I mean, part of me, obviously, I am not a medical professional.
I've not seen the MRI or would know what to do with it if I did see it.
But if I were the Diamondbacks, I would just want to take a very cautious approach to this situation
just because of how important Catelle-Marté is for this baseball team,
especially considering, you know, tomorrow you've got the finale against the Rockies,
you've got an off-day on Thursday.
I don't really see any reason if I'm the debacks to play Catell any sooner than Friday.
And even then, like, Derek, with the way that this team is playing right now,
they don't need Cotel-Marte to win baseball games.
Like, I feel pretty comfortable saying that.
As outrageous as that might have felt, you know, a couple of,
couple months ago when Kuttele was he's certainly been at the center of a lot of what they've done
recently but they're still going out there and finding ways to win games even when he is not in line up
we talked about it with the Philly series I still want you to take it back I still like it's still
kind of gross to me that you said that it's not inaccurate it's not inaccurate I just still want
you to take it back they just took three out of four from the Phillies in a series where Ketel played
15 out of the 36 innings right so yeah it's
It's not to say that like, oh, they, I don't necessarily think that they should just put them on the IL just because just out of caution.
Like if the medical information does not support that, then by all means, I don't see the need to do that.
But it's definitely just a situation where you want to be cautious, I think is all I'm thinking here.
The debacks already kind of tried to push him a little bit sooner than it seems like he was ready.
He clearly did not look right in that swing yesterday against the Rockies.
So at this point for the debacks, the most important thing is just to make sure that Cattel is healthy and good moving forward.
So, but yeah, still good news, right?
Very good news.
The fact is that Cattel does not have anything major going on.
And it sounds like he's going to be just fine.
Well, I'm ready to hear more from Tori about Jake's big walkoff here.
Or who, who do you want to go to first here?
Do we want to go to Jake?
Do we want to go to Tori?
What do you want to do?
Let's go to Tori.
This is Tori's initial, sort of initial comments on a big win tonight.
All right.
Here's what Tori had to say.
This team was with playing with a little edge late in the game.
And I feel like we were building meetings.
All right, cool.
And finding a way to get as close as we could by building them,
getting ourselves an opportunity.
It didn't happen in the eighth.
Had the right guy.
This team was with playing with a little.
in Jake in the ninth and he delivered a big two-out two strike base hit.
That inning was built because of some team at bats.
That inning was built because guys went up there and really stayed with their plan,
got stubborn to the pitch they were looking forward, didn't come out of their approach,
and they understood if they got on base in any way it was going to advance somebody 90 feet,
it was going to give us a chance to win a baseball game.
It was Del Castillo's at bat.
It was Predomo's at bat that I'm talking about.
clearly the key hit of the inning, besides Jake's, was Corbyn's triple.
He was just digging out of the box.
When the ball was hit, I turned and start to watch the hitter to see what they're doing,
and he was thinking three out of the box.
He always does that.
So it was just a great inning that we built, and he finally got that big hit.
Jake continues to be a very good hitter for us.
Just, you know, once again, I think it had, what, three hits,
a couple RBIs with that game-winning RBI.
just a very prepared player that is earning everything he's getting on a baseball field.
I thought Eduardo had a real good outing despite the one inning where there was a little bit of a misplay in left field.
Tracting to Eddie, but he regrouped enough, gave us five quality innings, in my opinion.
Next time we're going to push him up into that mid-90 pitch range and give him an opportunity to get a quality start out of something like what we saw today.
But this was a team win.
And those are exciting for me.
Those are moments where I get that feeling that we're never out of a game when we link up one through nine and we just power through an opportunity.
We let that team give us the chance.
And then when it was the right time, we took advantage of.
It was a great one.
That's a great point there by Tori about those.
I mean, obviously the bats that led up to Jake, right?
Jake's single does nothing if the bases aren't loaded.
if there aren't runners in scoring position,
even if it just would have been, you know, Corbyn at third.
Like, that still isn't enough for them to win this game.
So it was some great at bats there,
especially, like I said earlier, from Del Castillo,
such a young, you know, players still in his first week of playing Major League Baseball.
And here he is and, you know, pinch hitting in the most vital spot in the game.
And he delivered in a way for this team by walking and getting on base.
Absolutely, yeah.
And, you know, if Perdomo doesn't also draw a walk, then that doesn't push Del Castillo into scoring position.
And then, you know, the game potentially continues beyond the Jake single and the ninth inning there.
So, yeah, just enormous abats from both of those guys.
And as I said earlier, it felt like the debacks had to get the big hit eventually, right?
It's just like just eating after inning.
They were, you know, they were making at least a little bit of noise.
and they just weren't able to get over the hump.
Jake McCarthy himself had an opportunity earlier in the game
with runners at first and second and won out,
and he hit into his first double play of the season,
which is absolutely outrageous.
That was the first time that Jake McCarthy had hit into a double play
in well over 300 played appearances.
I'm not really sure how that's possible.
Speaking of Jake, let's go ahead and roll the video of him.
Here is Jake McCarthy talking about his,
his walk-off hit tonight.
Just trying to get something good to hit, obviously, the pitch I didn't.
I hit wasn't that good of a pitch to hit 100 of the letters, but I don't know,
just trying to at least put it in play there.
The guy's got a really good fastball.
Just trying to see it deep, and I was able to flick on the left.
But, you know, I just think that, what, four or five at bats before that one,
you're going to see that highlight, but I don't know, Del Castillo, Prudomo, Corbin.
I'm not missing a few guys.
That was awesome.
you know, I think if they go one, two, three, I don't hit.
So, you know, I just think that's a testament to this team, kind of the no-quit.
What was going through your head when that one poked through past the third basement?
I was looking at, you know, who was running home, and then the left fielder just held onto it.
So I was like, all right, game over.
But, you know, that's my first at this level.
So, you know, pretty cool situation.
And, you know, I'm just glad we could pull out a win and win a series again.
Chats, too.
Is anybody else thirsty after staring at Jake McCarthy right there during an interview?
Because I know I'm thirsty.
Probably a lot of people are thirsty.
That man's hair will make you thirsty.
And of course, make sure to stop by Circle K if you are thirsty.
That's the only way that you can really quench that thirst.

And again, you know after watching Jake McCarthy,
speak after that game winner he just had looking like he does there you're thirsty as well
so stop by america's thirst stop we have a brand new sponsor of course one that jesse most likely
will never have to ever try because unlike well one of us on this show uh drinks a lot at times and
so you know that's i'll leave that up to you to decide which one i'm talking about but i will tell you
that this game changing product uh we use before a night out would drink
drinks is amazing. It's called Zbiotics pre-alcohol. Let's face it, after a night with drinks,
none of us bounce back like we used to anymore. I know I especially don't. And so with Zbiotics
pre-alcohol, it's a surefire way to keep a fresh feeling, especially if you go out on
vacation, you have an important event. Maybe it's a wedding weekend and you're out having a good
time celebrating your friends or family getting married. Sometimes we don't want to wake up to that
terrible groggy headache we have the next morning. Pre-alcohol is the world's first genetically
engineered probiotic. It was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking.
Here's how it works when you drink. Alcohol gets converted into toxic byproduct in the gut.
It's this byproduct, not dehydration that makes us feel terrible the next day. So pre-alcohol
produces an enzyme to break this byproduct down. And just remember to make your Z-biotics the first
drink of the night, drink responsibly, and you'll feel your best tomorrow. So again,
vacations, weddings, birthdays, reunions, all that stuff. There's so much going on. Get the most out of
your summer plans by stocking up on pre-alcohol now. Go to Zbiotics.com slash PHNX
backs to get 15% off your order when you use PHNX backs at checkout. That's just PHNX backs.
Pre-alcohol is backed with 100% money back guarantee. So if you're unsatisfied for any reason,
they'll refund your money. No question to ask. Just head to Zbiotics.com.
com slash pHNX backs and use the code pH and X backs at checkout for 15% off.
And maybe, maybe some of those players after winning two games in a row might need that.
We have an early start tomorrow.
So I want to make sure everybody's sharp, you know, just in case they have a couple of bruskees tonight.
But it's a great night to celebrate, Jesse.
This team continues to roll five wins in a row.
Of course, they haven't lost a series in what feels like forever.
They are 11-0-1 in their last 12 series.
And I just, I'm just really still kind of in awe of what this team has been able to put together over this run.
Yeah, it is, it is really something, Derek.
It has been 47 days now since the Diamondbacks have lost the series.
That was the Minnesota Twins, that three game set.
And I think I just saw some buy the numbers.
Yeah, well, is that my cue?
Is that my cue?
You may have, you may not have.
I don't know.
It might be a lie.
It might be the truth.
We don't know how that goes.
but, you know, since it did peak up, let's go ahead and take a look at your number that doesn't lie.
What do you have for tonight, Jesse Friedman?
Yeah, tonight's number, as you can see here, is 12-12, 1.212.
This is Jake McCarthy's OPS, Derek, in the number two spot in the lineup.
As I touched on earlier, we have been seeing Jake McCarthy in that number two spot quite a bit recently.
Ever since Gabriel Moreno went down, of course, Moreno was hitting second against Lerner.
lefties. Once he got hurt, then Jake McCarthy emerged and was moved up to that spot with
Catelle hitting lead off. Obviously, Catell was not hitting lead off in this game. That was Pardombo
because of him getting hurt as well. But yeah, we're starting to see Jake McCarthy really creeped
toward the top of this lineup and he is very much delivered. I believe that's just six games.
This was six game in the number two spot. But to have an OPS over 1,200, you know,
that's that that that'll play, Derek. That'll play. That'll play. That'll play. That'll play.
That will definitely play.
Well, we do have more from the clubhouse, more from Tori Lavello.
What was this last clip?
What he told Jake after Jake got the walkoff?
Yeah, this is what Tori Lavello told Jake McCarthy after his walkoff, which was the first
walkoff of Jake McCarthy's career.
Here's what Tori had to say.
I said, I'm so proud of you.
Way to go.
You helped your team win a baseball game.
That was a great moment for you and a great moment for us.
And I know they don't hear me, but, you know, they're just like, get away from me.
My manager's hugging me, but I'm an emotional guy.
I like contact.
So going for the hug and say a couple words in his ear or something pretty close to what I just said.
Did you blackmail again?
No, not like Del Castillo.
I was a goner there.
I probably said, oh, my God, ten times before I got to Delcastio.
That one was hard to believe.
It's mad.
I like the Tori's a contact guy.
Again, it makes me understand why him and I are so close.
We're cut from the same cloth.
But Jesse, yes, I mean, it's an amazing moment.
And I mean, it's this is a culture that exists because of Tori Lavello.
Right.
I mean, when he talks about going out there and hugging those guys and having, having, you know,
having one of his players make a comment or have that attitude that sounds more like it's his dad
hugging him during an important moment and embarrassing him.
rather than it being his baseball manager on his professional MLB team,
it just goes to show how close these guys are.
And I mean,
I know we've talked about it time and time again.
We have the shirt.
We've talked about being connected.
And what being connected makes us, right?
It makes us fucking dangerous.
But this team is special.
And Tori Lavello is a big reason why.
Yeah, I mean,
just a fun, fun kind of hearing Tori described that moment.
That follow-up question was in reference to Adrian Delco.
Castillo's walk off Homer a few days ago.
In that case, Tori basically, he basically described himself blacking out,
like him having not really much recollection of exactly what happened.
And he said that wasn't quite the case this time, you know, understandably so.
Like what AJ Del Castillo did was absolutely outrageous to have that be your first career
Homer.
But still a big moment here.
And I wonder if Tori, you know, maybe being not so shocked in that moment is a testament
to just what McCarthy has done over the last couple of weeks.
Like, yeah, of course, Jake McCarthy, you know, took a 100 mile per hour fastball that I don't
even believe was a strike.
I think it was out over the plate, you know, up above the strike zone.
And McCarthy really just a perfect approach tries to go with the ball and take it to the
opposite field.
In a two-strike count, McCarthy had already swung and missed at a change-up.
He was late on a fastball, fouled it back earlier in the end bat.
I wouldn't say that neither of those swings really looked all that compelling.
but McCarthy is yet another member of this Diamondbacks team who knows how to work a quality at bat.
And even in two strikes, you know, has the ability to poke a base hit every now and then.
And he obviously was able to do that there.
The Diamondbacks have a chance tomorrow to go for, what is it now, just their fourth sweep of the season,
which feels like a bit of anomaly.
Is it their fourth because they swept the Reds, the Guardians?
Yeah, it would be their fourth.
and their third in the last two weeks, two and a half weeks, if it were to happen.
So, yeah, this team is, this team is playing outrageously good baseball right now, Derek.
I saw Alden Gonzalez over from ESPN, tweeted it out earlier that, of course, not only are the
Diamondbacks in the NOS playing some pretty good baseball, but some of the other teams in the
NLS are as well.
The three best teams since the All-Star break right now, Derek, are the San Diego Padres,
the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Those are your three best teams in baseball.
And the Giants,
the Giants were playing pretty good baseball until recently, right?
So even they were kind of coming on strong.
We just recently discussed the possibility of having four NL West teams in the playoffs,
which is just crazy.
And I mean,
it could happen.
It could still happen.
The one thing about this, though, is the Diamondbacks,
the Mets now have lost four in a row.
The Giants have lost three in a row.
That's really important because the Diamondbacks right now have a six-game lead essentially on the,
on being out of the wild card, right?
And that, as much as it's frustrating to be like almost step by step with the Padres,
at least that division is being created and the Diamondbacks are securing their spot potentially in the playoffs more and more with every single one of these wins.
these little victories, especially these games, these games where it didn't really feel like
they had any business winning and they still found a way to do so are going to be very important
come September 30th and the end of this, you know, baseball season.
So the Diamondbacks need to stay on a role with the way that some of these other teams like
the Padres are continuing to play.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
You know, the margin of air here with San Diego in particular is not big.
And, you know, we'll get into more of like the exact playoff matchups as the postseason gets closer.
Obviously, we're still more than a month and a half away and a whole lot of things can happen between now and then.
But the Diamondbacks and the Padres, I mean, they are pretty much in lockstep right now with the top two spots in the wild card.
And if I'm the debacks, Derek, I would much rather have the Padres come into Arizona in that wild card round than the Diamondbacks going to San Diego, which has been, you know, having come.
covered some games in that ballpark. Padres fans are pretty insane and they've really built
something with that ballpark and that fan base over there. So yeah, there's still a ton of time
left. I mean, the division remains in play. The Dodgers are not losing at all right now.
The Brewers once again today, but you're still very much within striking distance there,
just three and a half games away. So yeah, this NLS, Derek, it is the NOS that I guess,
we maybe feared it would be at the beginning of the season with how well these teams are playing.
And of course, the San Francisco Giants, as you mentioned, they've lost a few games in a row at this
point. But I still think they're very much in the mix here as well.
Well, I do want to bring up the fact that the Philadelphia Phillies still haven't won a baseball game
since their fans came for me on what was that Thursday last week.
There are four losses in a row.
Not that I'm petty, not that I would ever want to point out any.
anything based on pettiness.
But we do have some amazing super chats if you wouldn't mind going to those.
Kyle, my guy.
Kevin Conkeso, thank you so much.
He said, PHLY, we're watching us.
DNVR is doing the same high.
He said, happy birthday.
Randall Gritchick, Josh Bell on deck.
Was it Randall Gritchick's birthday, too?
I know he got his 10 years of service, which was amazing to see and is a huge honor in baseball
just because of how difficult it is to have a lengthy career in baseball.
But his birthday on top of that, happy birthday, Randall Gritchick, fantastic, all the way around.
And of course, he's been an excellent addition to this team as well.
This team just, again, it's the depth.
It's what this team kind of has gone through throughout the season that's kind of molded
them into what they are right now.
But this, we, we joked all season long that just wait until Merrill and Eduardo Rodriguez come back.
Little did we know that it wouldn't be because of.
of them that this team would be winning, but because this offense just continues to find a way
to do enough.
So there's a lot of you in here.
Make sure to hit that like button, by the way, before you get out of here.
We appreciate you guys so much for being here.
Of course, like we said, the Diamondbacks go for potentially just their fourth sweep of the
season, which is another thing that seems really weird, considering this team is now 15
games above 500 that they only have three sweeps prior to this.
But the important thing has been winning series or finding a way to at least not.
lose those series and that's why the diamondbacks right now are 11.0 and 1 in their last 12
series. Jesse, they're a wagon. Yeah, they are now on pace to win 91 games this season,
which just feel, I mean, that's just what they're on pace to do, right? And that's like based
on their win percentage from the entire season, not, you know, their win percentage over the last
several weeks, which obviously would lead them to, you know, much more than just 91 wins. So,
yeah, the fact that we've gotten to this point right now, I mean, I wrote about it in my
newsletter earlier in the evening, the Diamondbacks back on June 28th, Derek, were 39 and 43.
They were four games under 500. I believe they were three and a half games out of the wildcard
picture at that point with three games separating them from the third wildcard team. It wasn't
that they were out of it at that point, but over on fan graphs, their playoff odds fell below 20%.
I think it was 17.5% if I'm remembering correctly.
And now, after this win tonight, looking over at fan graphs, they have the Diamondbacks at a 91.8% chance
to make the postseason, which is...
Let's fucking go.
Let's go, baby.
Well, they were wrong before.
We know computers can be stupid.
Well, happy.
That's true.
Computers can be stupid and that's why the Diamondback should continue to play the games and do the thing.
And there's still a long way to go between now and the end of the season for sure.
Sean in our chat is mad at me for using the S word again.
Between Sean and Ruth, I'm just, I'm censored all the time.
I will say sweep only because I am a man that doesn't believe.
believe that words that come out of my mouth actually impact baseball games, but you might believe
differently. Again, happy national left-hander day to Ned Flanders and all the left-handerers out there
today. This was the only matchup, Jesse, in Major League Baseball that featured two left-handed
starting pitchers. So this was officially the lefty matchup of the day on left-hander day and
the Diamondbacks prevail. What were your thoughts before we get out of here on Eduardo Rodriguez?
I mean, I know he went out there and did his thing.
It was very similar to his first start.
But, I mean, what are your thoughts on him after you've seen him now pitch for this team twice?
Yeah, I thought he was okay.
I don't think this was Eduardo Rodriguez's best work by any means, you know, giving up three runs and five innings to a Rockies, obviously a pretty poor Rockies offense.
Like, that doesn't feel great.
It very well could have been five innings, two runs, I will say.
You might have touched on this earlier.
But in that second inning, Brendan Rogers hit a double.
that was really just the product of a miscommunication, I think, between Jake McCarthy and
Randall Grishick in the outfield.
If they're able to make that play, which it looked like Grishick should have made the play,
McCarthy kind of wound up cutting in front and trying to make a diving attempt that just wasn't
going to work.
But yeah, if Grishick makes that play, then that inning ends a whole lot sooner.
It wound up stretching on several more batters as a result of that.
The Rocky scored a run in that inning as a result.
and you know it would have it would have made the the third inning also a lot different
because then you're you know you're potentially starting with the bottom couple of hitters
in the rockies lineup um so yeah i think it could have been it could have looked different
uh if if the diamondbacks had been able to make that play granted the defense was also good at
times like corbin carroll made a really nice grab in the right field corner uh there were some
other quality defensive plays for the debacks throughout this game so uh you know at times you're
going to benefit from the defense and at times we don't see it often but at times you know the debaq's defense
is going to have a miscue which did happen today but yeah i thought he was solid you know five
strikeouts only only the one walk he finished on a high note retiring the the final seven batters that he
faced um we didn't talk with him for super long after this game but he did mention that he felt he
he threw too many changeups uh in that second and third inning and he felt like that might have been
the reason that the rockies were we're kind of able to to get in a nice rhythm
against him. A lot of the pitches that Rocky's hitters did hit were not really terrible
pitches. Some of them weren't even strikes. So I wasn't alarmed by anything in this outing. I think,
I think Erod looked just fine. All right. Well, we will get a chance to him again. And of course,
Jesse had an update on the starting rotation, which sounds like the Diamondbacks, despite Tori Lovallo
saying they weren't really going to go with six men, maybe going with a six-man rotation just for a little bit
to give their guys a little bit of a break,
but we'll see how this all plays out for the Diamondbacks.
And of course, they go for, I don't know, what do I call it,
winning the third game in the series tomorrow?
This feels weird.
They go for the sweep tomorrow.
I'm not scared.
I'll fucking say it.
They're going for the sweep tomorrow.
