PHNX Arizona Diamondbacks Podcast - Josh Bell, Ketel Marte HIT TWO DINGERS EACH In Diamondbacks Close Win Over Pirates

Episode Date: August 3, 2024

The Diamondbacks had another incredible 1st inning, hitting back-to-back-to-back jacks and scoring five runs against the Pirates early. But Brandon Pfaadt seemed to run out of gas and the bullpen had ...a bit of a meltdown, allowing the Pirates to comeback and take the lead. Eventually, the Snakes got hot again thanks to multi-homer nights from Ketel Marte and Josh Bell and managed to win a close one without Paul Sewald’s services. We have more on the back and forth affair, the offense coming up big when the bullpen couldn’t, and Bell hitting two home runs in his D-backs debut. An ALLCITY Network ProductionSUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: https://bit.ly/phnx_youtubeALL THINGS PHNX: http://linktr.ee/phnxsports PHNX Events: Get your tickets to PHNX events and takeovers here: https://gophnx.com/events/bet365: https://www.bet365.com/olp/open-account?affiliate=365_03330244 Use the code PHNX365 to sign up, deposit $10 and choose between either:Bet and Get offer and place a bet of $5 or more and get $150 in Bonus Bets OR First Bet Safety Net offer by placing a bet up to $1000 and if your qualifying bet loses you receive a matched refund in Bonus betsDisclaimer: Must be 21+ and physically located in AZ. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem and wants help, call 1-800-NEXT-STEP, text NEXTSTEP to 53342 or visit https://problemgambling.az.gov/Sanderson Ford: The Sanderson Ford Summer Sales Event is here and they are teaming up with the boys of summer for a final Playoff Payoff Sale! Starting point is 00:00:10 Ski and welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Debaks podcast. Right here on PHNX, of course, we are presented by the fine folks at Bet365. Download the Bet365 app and use code PHNX365. When you sign up, choose your offer and find out why it is never ordinary at Bet365. And we're going to talk about why it is never ordinary to watch an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game. Derek, I just want an easy game. I just want one easy game. just want one game where the Diamondbacks can score those five runs early and then just stay up and then just be up.
Starting point is 00:00:47 But no, we can't have nice things like that, Jacob. We can't. Instead, we have to have this team giving us a thrill. And of course, we also had the thrill of seeing Josh Bell make his debut tonight. What a game. I mean, the Diamondbacks come out as hot as you can imagine. This marked the second time this season where the Diamondbacks scored five or more runs in the first inning. They did it on April 6th against the Braves, Jacob, a game that they lost. So as much as you
Starting point is 00:01:19 wanted to have confidence in this game, the other time we did it, we blew that one. That was a very different point of the season. It was a very different point in the season. You're right about that. But they weren't the hottest team in baseball. And they continue. They start off August as remaining, refusing to give up that spot of the hottest team of baseball. Again, two home run night from Josh Bell in his debut. Of course, Catell refuses to be upstaged, so he also had two home runs tonight. And it was just kind of an incredible game just from the beginning, right? You know, you have Corbyn Carroll lead the game off with a triple that the Pirates misplayed
Starting point is 00:01:57 that allowed Corbyn to get home on the error. But counterpoint, Jacob, I say that Corbyn Carroll caused the error with his speed, thus this should be an in-the-part-over. Award him the homer. And then, I don't know. Yeah, award him the homer. He should have two homers tonight because I don't know. You notice in like the eighth inning, he like the lazy, the lazy fly out to left field.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Yes. Kept carrying. And I was like. Going and going and going. Go. Go. I don't think I even introduced us because I was so excited to get into the show. People are already talking about your hair.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Yeah. It's better today, right? Looks good. Your hair looks good. And of course, this is the father overlord. It's over on this side. But this is Father Overlord Jacob, of course, joining us here. And I am occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX, also known as Derek Montia.
Starting point is 00:02:47 But man, what a night for this team tonight. It was an incredible win. And it didn't feel like it needed to be as close as the game ended up being. Obviously, that's just from our perspective. But again, the night starts off with the Corbyn Carroll triple that is misplayed. And he scores, right? Then you have Cotell Marte immediately follow that up with a dinger of his own. that almost left the ballpark.
Starting point is 00:03:09 That one almost got out. That was his 25th home run of the year. And then Jock Peterson does hit one that goes out of the ballpark into the Alligati River, which was an impressive feat by Jock, of course. But then, I mean, the big story tonight is that Josh Bell joins the team there in Pittsburgh. It's his first night. He gets activated. We'll talk about the moves that were related to that, that you people will not be very happy with.
Starting point is 00:03:36 but Josh Bell hopefully makes it a little easier on your heart that you lost Pavin Smith because he makes it back to back to back Jacks with a home run on the very first pitch that he sees as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. You know who doesn't have that kind of power? Payton Smith. Yeah. I knew you're going to say that. I jokingly said in the Discord tonight, I said, you know what?
Starting point is 00:04:02 I don't miss Christian Walker. And like internally I was sobbing. but for a guy who was making his debut as a diamondback, did he make the impact tonight? I mean, it just, it was pretty spectacular to watch him. I mean, he likes to hit in that ballpark.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Somebody threw out some of the numbers, and he's like a career 260 hitter in Pittsburgh. It's kind of home to him a little bit there, right? Yeah. So, you know, like while it stings having Christian Walker out, you replaced him with a guy who, A, was probably one of the hottest hitters in baseball at the time, especially from a power standpoint.
Starting point is 00:04:35 but you replace him with MLB grade production, and that's what you need. Yeah. And it's a guy that was hot at the time when the Diamondbacks acquired him. So it's like, why not take the chance? And so far, he proves that he stayed hot by hitting two home runs in this game. He also becomes just the second Diamondback of all time to hit a home run in their very first pitch faced as a Dback. The only other one was D.D. Gregorius. D.D. Gregorius did it coincidentally.
Starting point is 00:05:05 enough against the Yankees. But the Diamondbacks did score five runs in the first inning. They also, I think Lord is single. There was a lot of offense to keep up with early, right? The Diamondbacks now have scored 77 runs this season in the first inning, which leads Major League Baseball. And Jacob, despite all of that offense in the first inning, they pulled their disappearing act there again until they're in the game, right? I know it's hard to hit a baseball. I know it's easy for me to be a chubby guy sitting in this chair, you know, talking about why don't you score more runs there in the middle part of the game. But it does seem odd that a team can just come out and be as hot, you know, as a team was in the first
Starting point is 00:05:50 inning and then just kind of go quiet. And that's, it's something. I mean, that's what we've got to expect, right? Like, that's where we're at. This team, this team does this far too often, I would say. It's, it's definitely one of the things that you probably want to fix if you're headed toward the postseason, which they are playing at a level that they should be headed there. But unfortunately, every other wildcard team right now is just as hot as them, which if we could talk about that, like, that's a little frightening at this moment because as much as I would hate to say it, like this team is hitting their mark at the right time. They're about to go through a gauntlet.
Starting point is 00:06:22 I mean, they're about to play Houston, L.A., New York, Boston, Philly. I mean, they're about to play a ton of really, really, really good teams headed down the stretch. Like if you're a playoff team, you're going to have to prove it. But, you know, like in order to be a good playoff team, you can't just have five or six innings where you disappear. Because guess what? When you hit the playoffs, you're facing guys one, two, and three. Most teams are running a three-man rotation.
Starting point is 00:06:50 One, two, three. We know how good the pirate starting rotation is. And Luis L. Ortiz got rocked today early. Yep. But credit to him for sticking in there and still doing what he does. and that's a big reason why the diamondbacks weren't really able to keep it going, is because Ortiz seemed to get things back on track. Of course, the pirates did have the third best ERA for the starting pitching coming into this game,
Starting point is 00:07:16 but not so much for the relievers, right? Their bullpen wasn't so hot. And the diamondbacks, of course, did eventually get to the bullpen. They scored one run in each of the fight, in six, seventh, eighth, and ninth inning. and it was pretty amazing because they ended up needing every single one of those home runs. Heraldo Perdomo,
Starting point is 00:07:39 let's talk about it. He might have had. He just makes things happen. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, Jacob, no, we're not doing that. No, we're not talking when you said, this was, this was the most goddamn dramatic at bat I've ever seen in my entire life.
Starting point is 00:07:57 I mean, and of course it comes from, Harold O'Prodomo, where this man fouls a ball off of his knee and looks like he has just completely ended his season, maybe his career for a brief moment there as he rives in agony at home plate. And then he just casually gets back up, makes some jokes with Tori Lavallo while he does his weird dad eye check thing that he does with all of his players every time they get injured. Look at me. Look at me. Are you, have you been drinking? Have you been drinking? Have you been drinking? You know, and then he goes and what does he do? He, he smacks the game tying, you know, double, RBI double.
Starting point is 00:08:44 I was worried off the back because, like, I am an advocate of like Jerry P hits the most wo Nellies, I think, of any player on this team. Right. He just is naturally, like, he's a taller guy, but he just doesn't naturally have a ton of pop in his bat. And so, like, he hits a ton of baseballs that look like they're going to be about 40 rows deep that either die on the warning track or they're just kind of lazy flyouts to right field. So when he hit that, I kind of held my breath for a second because I was like, you know what? I'm not going to get caught up in this, this Jerry P. This Jerry P magic that sometimes catches me off guard. And then it hit the wall. And I was like, where did that come from?
Starting point is 00:09:19 That ball was smoked. Smoked. Smoked. That ball. Not to mention the fact that someone in the chat brought it up. Oh, Ina. one of our favorites. Ina Jackson in the chat says, DOMO was the reason J. Mart finds his killer focus.
Starting point is 00:09:34 And yes, like we're going to talk about the bullpen. But Justin Martinez comes into the game, looks like an absolute stud against the first two batters like he often does, strikes them both out, walks Andrew McCutcheon and suddenly can't find the strike zone. And then, yeah, like per domo, like the little Yoda that he is, comes over and gives him whatever piece of advice that he needed to hear. And, you know, just does that thing. They talked about in the broadcast that that Tori believes in Perdomo to be that manager on the field.
Starting point is 00:10:06 And you can tell. Like, it just sounds so silly that that your shortstop supporting you can make you all of a sudden feel that confidence to throw the strike zone. But man, just having someone remind you that you're a badass and that you can do this is important sometimes in life. Yeah. I want to, I want to like, so I was very curious about that. this because it seemed like there was a trend with the pitching tonight and it was just not being able to find the strike zone at all. It was 90 degrees with 90% humidity in Pittsburgh today. And so it seemed like, and this even was the case with Brandon Fott. Like it seemed like he,
Starting point is 00:10:43 like he would start an inning sharp and then toward the end of the inning he'd start missing spots. And it wasn't even like it was like competitive misses. It was sure not even close. Yeah, he was cursing early. Well, and if you noticed, his gray jury, Jersey was basically two shades darker by the fifth inning than it was when he started the game. I think that guys had a lot of issue with gripping the baseball. Like I was legitimately, like, as the innings would go on, it was like, please like just get out of this inning because you're starting to miss your spots. And I know sweat's supposed to help to some degree, but if you're sweating as profusely as they are, that doesn't help you. Jacob, I talked a lot of shit about Globe Life Field, and then we took a field trip over to Choctaw Stadium.
Starting point is 00:11:31 And we were there in the middle of the day during July when baseball games would have been played by the Rangers in that stadium. And it was one of the most miserable experiences I've ever, like, felt. Like, I wanted out of that building so fast and so bad. So, like, yes, the, like, the humidity and the heat can just be awful sometimes. And, yeah, I mean, uh, shod. John in the chat says must have been miserable on the field. It absolutely must have been miserable. Every pitcher looked like they were dealing with a little bit of the schvitz.
Starting point is 00:12:01 They were dealing with it. And there was, it was a disaster tonight for the bullpen. And honestly, Brandon fought. Things fell apart for him quickly, right? He looked like he was cruising through the first three innings. He threw his sweeper a lot. That was the pitch they threw the most. He got seven whips on it.
Starting point is 00:12:18 He threw a sinker. He threw his four seam. But he threw a lot of pitches in the fourth and fifth inning. He saw a lot of batters in those two innings. And that just, he just ran out of gas early. He ends up going five innings pitch, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts. O'Neill Cruz was a thorn in everybody's side all night long, but he was especially a thorn in Brandon Fott's side.
Starting point is 00:12:41 It felt like that man had an incredible night. And I'm not surprised after the way that he dented our truck in right field. I was going to say he was a thorn and Brandon Fott's side the last time he saw him, too. He still owes us some money for that or so, owes somebody, right? Like, I don't know. I don't want to put him all blast with Sanderson Ford here, but we might have to talk about that.
Starting point is 00:13:00 What went further? Cattell's home run in the ninth inning or O'Neill Cruz's Homer. I got to look this up. I'm going to say it was O'Neill Cruises, but Cattell's in the ninth inning tonight. When he hit that truck, I think it was just BP, though, so at least it wasn't an actual game.
Starting point is 00:13:15 But is Fogg getting to that point where even on a night where he's not very good, his numbers are still not bad for most major. league pitchers. I mean, five innings pitch, seven hits, three earn runs. That's not the worst night. No. And I would consider this kind of a bad performance for Brandon Fott. I think he's starting to get to that point where you can probably expect a quality start most of the times that he's going to go out there. Obviously, he didn't earn a quality start tonight. But you know what he did? Even when he struggled, he gave him a chance to win. And that is what, that is what, and I don't
Starting point is 00:13:45 want to say this word too soon, but like you're looking at a future a couple years from now where you might not have Zach and Merrill at the top of your rotation. Yeah. And you give Brandon Fott, I know, you give Brandon Fott a year from now, and you might be talking about him as somebody who could truly be an ace or a really solid number two starter. Well, he hands it over to the bullpen. And again, this isn't the bullpen guys we don't want to see.
Starting point is 00:14:15 We got Kevin Ginkle early. We get Kevin Ginkle in the sixth inning with a five-three lead. and he loads the bases on a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch. Not great. Not great. Control. Yeah, control was the problem for the bullpen. And the sweatiness, you know, especially, right?
Starting point is 00:14:34 You're sitting out there in the bullpen. You're waiting for your turn. It's hot. This game is getting close. You know, you feel the nerves kicking in a little bit. It's going to be your time to pitch here soon. You're sweating a lot. He gets a ground out, a run scores.
Starting point is 00:14:48 And then, honestly, a baffling move by Tori La Wallo. Yeah, that one had me scratch. A bit, you put AJ Puck and let me, give me a second to look this up. I actually really was curious if Andrew McCutcheon had reverse splits, but I don't think that's ever been Andrew McCutcheon in his entire life. But he, it was definitely just kind of one of those like, what are we doing right now? Like, why is that what, like, why?
Starting point is 00:15:22 I really struggled. He got set up for failure. He got set up for failure. He wasn't facing advantageous matchups. I just don't know why. I don't know why other than he's been incredibly good. And that's why you go to him. He's got reverse splits.
Starting point is 00:15:40 So that's probably why Tori. And obviously I'm not defending this, but I'm just kind of trying to get into the mind of Tori here. Okay. That's fair. That could be the case. His 194 batting average against lefties this year. A 194 and 115 plate appearances against lefties.
Starting point is 00:15:56 I mean, it was a shitty situation for any reliever to be put in, to go in there and mop up, you know, essentially just, I think it was men on the corners and whatever, but he was pretty bad tonight. He let three hits and three more runs to score. And they give up the lead. The Diamondbacks at that point really hadn't put up much. They had put up one run in the top of the sixth,
Starting point is 00:16:16 but the Pirates score four runs in the bottom of the inning, and they take the lead seven to six. and it felt like at that point, right? It felt like at that point this was one of those kind of games where, you know, pitching wasn't doing good. The offense was expected to kind of pick up the slack and they were going to fall short, even though they did a good job. You know, you can't take away what they did in the first inning as much as I complained
Starting point is 00:16:39 about them going silent for innings two through six essentially. The Diamondbacks, you know, do a good job. And credit to the other members of the bullpen as people in the chat are bringing up. Dylan Floro, welcome to the Diamondbacks. the backs. Yeah, they needed that. I need a non-dramatic reliever. I need somebody that's not going to make my tummy upset, Jacob. I need somebody that makes me feel like I could maybe turn my TV off and go to sleep. Yeah, just a little bit of confidence. You know, like I don't know what else. You know, he just goes in there. He pitched one inning. Nothing else, no hits, no strikeouts, no walks, no nothing.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Jay Mark comes in. We talked about J. Mark, of course. He solid through the first two batters. Then things got shaky. And again, it's like, that's that high leverage moment where you see that when things don't go right for him, especially in that bat against Andrew McCutcheon, who's a vet and knows how to work the count against the young pitcher in that moment. Kind of a weird moment too, and not at bat. Just kind of the weird like catchers interference. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Like, you got to learn to deal with that shit. It's on purpose, right? Like, it's not like they're not trying to pull out every trick in the book at that point, especially knowing that you're, what,
Starting point is 00:17:49 22-year-old kid out there on the mound, right? Like, they want to rattle you, and they almost did. But thanks to Jerry P and his presence and his guidance and his leadership, J-Marg gets through it. We get down to T-time for the close in the closer roll tonight. Is that closer roll? Is that closer roll cursed, Derek? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:10 I just, like, that T-time outing reminds me of a lot of his outings in the seventh or eighth inning. That was not a not, like, Thompson is a guy that keeps the runs off the board for the most part, but O'Neill Cruz was having an incredible night. Yeah, that's a hard out. Play getting that stolen base, right? Because that broke up a double play, that game, you know, no runs would have scored there.
Starting point is 00:18:31 And I mean, a lot of that was caused by O'Neill Cruz and his athleticism. So you got to give credit where credits do. For sure. This didn't feel like, like different than other, you know, T-time outings, right? Ryan Thompson goes out there sometimes. and it's not perfect, but he finds a way. And that's the thing is that Ryan Thompson, Kevin Ginkle, you know, and the pitcher formerly known as Paul Seawald,
Starting point is 00:18:56 you could just count on them when things fell apart a little bit to still keep it together. Like that's what made them so good and so reliable. Yeah, I mean, is any team ever really going to be perfect as much as we would like it to be? This team is winning. I think so. I don't remember who it was,
Starting point is 00:19:14 but like somebody in the chat said, this team finds ways to win baseball games. And what did they do last year? What did they do when they made the World Series? The only reason they made that run is because they found ways to win baseball games. It didn't matter who it was, whether it was Alec Thomas off of Craig Kimbril, whether it was Catell, whether it was Corbyn, whether it was Corbyn carroll, whether it was the bullpen being lights out the entire postseason run.
Starting point is 00:19:38 They found ways to win baseball games. Yeah. You just have to. You have to. That's it. Well, tonight, a big reason why they, did it was because of the long ball you get josh bell adding that home run late yeah which was huge you get kattel martez that seemed like it was just again could tell being like i will be damned if someone's
Starting point is 00:19:58 going to join this team with and show me up on his first night uh and that ended up being very important obviously because the diamond bics win this one nine to eight uh just by one run the in the first inning those three home runs jacob they were the first time that the diamond backs have hit three home runs in an inning since when you want to guess max sure was it the max scherzer game no it was the four home runs in the national league yeah yeah it's the dodgers as i wondered if we were talking i didn't know if we were including postseason or not on that yeah we are we are so uh they tied a franchise high with six consecutive batters reaching to start the game uh the first time that ever happened in franchise history also happened against the pirates at their ballpark on august
Starting point is 00:20:45 22nd, 2001. Shout out to the Diamondbacks for all of these tidbits, by the way. Don't think I am researching any of this. Derek is Jesse. He's a supercomputer. Yeah. Diamondbacks marked their second occurrence in franchise history of the 4 plus extra base. It's the starting game.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Boop, boop, boop. All right. Well, of course, we got to get to the Sanderson Deep Drive of the game, shall we? And it's probably not the one you think it is because it's going to be a different one. But let's go to the Sanderson Deep Drive of the game. Throw that up there. Jock Peterson's 430-foot home run
Starting point is 00:21:21 that landed in the Allegheny River is our deep drive of the game. I know it's not as important as the other ones, but it went out of the ballpark. Jacob, what do you expect me to do when it lands out of the ballpark in a river, in a river? You want to know what the most disappointing thing about Chase Field is?
Starting point is 00:21:41 What's that? That we don't have a way for people to hit a baseball out of the ballpark because it is it is legitimately one of the most exciting things that you can do or watch. There's only been, there's only been, I heard this, there's only been 80 times ever that a ball has hit the Allegheny River. 79. 80 because Cattell hit it in the ninth inning. Oh, yes. Yes, you're right.
Starting point is 00:22:05 You're right. Cotell did hit it in the ninth inning. And two of them were tonight. You've saw two of them. Probably deserves that, that's for sure. But yes, Peterson's marked the 79th. of a home run flying in the Allegheny River. He becomes the 50th player to do so.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Ketel becomes the 51st. There you go. People think that this is Bell erasure and slander. This is not Bell. This is not Bell Aracier. Don't worry. We, the thumbnails rigged the bell, folks. We're going to get to all the Josh Bell talk here shortly.
Starting point is 00:22:37 But, of course, we do want to thank our friends at Sanderson Ford. We are absolutely proud to sponsor or to partner together with Sanderson. for it, of course. They have their big playoff payoff sale right now. Hit that jingle. Country. Keep on serving you. Let's go. I don't know. Are we allowed? I don't know. We might get DMCA for that, but
Starting point is 00:22:57 they are pushing for the playoffs right now and you get the payoffs like deals on a 24 for Broncos Sport Big Bend, just ranked highest quality in its segment by J.D. Power. I would love one of those. So if you're purchasing one for you, maybe we could get matching ones and maybe you can pay for it. you're a very wealthy person. I don't know. I'm just throwing that out there. You can get 0% financing for 36 months with no payments for 90 days on the Ford F-150,
Starting point is 00:23:24 the escape, the edge, the explorer, and the expedition. And Jacob, let me tell you, we got 90 days. And that's a beautiful thing, 90 days with no payments when you can get that for a new car. They have me looking at those expeditions. Oh, yeah. I am in need of a bigger car. You got the kid? You got the family?
Starting point is 00:23:44 You know, it's always. good. I think especially with the little ones, you never realize how, like, no, there's never enough space in your vehicle for heavy and small child for many, many years. And I mean, I have a teenager and I still have enough space for her. But the Sanderson for summer sales event is here and they are teaming up with the boys of summer for a final playoff payoff sale, purchase or lease any new Ford and get four tickets for your family to see the debacks, push for the playoffs, get zero percent of 36 months OAC from Ford Credit, see dealer for details. And again, Again, yeah, if you buy yourself a Ford Big Ben Bronco, buy me one too.

Starting point is 00:26:17 Call 1-800 next step. Text next step to 533442 or visit problemgambling.az.gov. All right. Well, there was talk in the chat earlier about the PHNX Cardinals show claiming that they're better than us. Yes. It's a super chat from Kevin Concaezo. So first thank you for your super chat and thank you for this information. I don't know what I appreciate more.
Starting point is 00:26:40 The super chat portion of it or the information that's provided to me. but according to Kevin, the P. HNX card show think they are better than the PHNX D-BACs? I've done since producer extraordinaire Damon Dogg, who usually is on this show and the PHNX Cardinal show has been out on the PHNX Cardinal show the last couple days. I hang on, Derek, before we bust out the bats, I have been producing that show the last couple days. Kevin, Mr. Kevin Concaso here, I'm putting him on trial here, goes in to the Cardinals chat and says PH and XDbacks greater than PH&X Cardinals. There's no Jesse. There's no Jesse on this show.
Starting point is 00:27:23 So this man started a war over here. He started a war. It sounds. What do you expect from them other than to defend themselves, Derek? It sounds like he was. fitting facts. That's just what it sounds like. I am an unbiased. I love all shows equally. I'm not going to choose one show over another. If I had to choose a team, I obviously love the Diamond Bags more. I know you do. We don't even, I didn't even need to know that. But I don't choose shows.
Starting point is 00:27:52 What have I told you for the last three years? I don't choose shows. That's not me. That's not my style. But yes, there might be a subtle war going on that the Cardinal show said that and I said, unfortunately, if it came down to a physical war, you might stand a good chance against the two of them, but I really, I don't, like, Damon, I don't know which side he's choosing. I just don't know if Jesse can hold up his end of the bargain and a fight against Johnny and Bo.
Starting point is 00:28:20 I just don't. Yeah. There's talk in the chat now that the PHNX Mercury is better than all of us. I don't like any of this. That's just objectively incorrect. Let's take a look at the count of this game presented by Desert Financial Crows. credit union because this was a close one. And the count actually has quite a bit to say about
Starting point is 00:28:41 this one. Diamondbacks outscored the pirates nine to eight. They out hit the pirates 11 to eight runners in scoring position. Pirates were actually quite good going seven for 12 to night for 583 batting average to the Diamondbacks two for nine night going 22. Now the big key here is the extra base hits, right? The pirates only had three and none of those three were home runs to the Diamondbacks eight extra base hits. Hilariously, though, the hard hit percentage is in favor of the pirates who did not hit a home run at 50% to the Diamondbacks, 33.3%. And remember, hard hit rate is a fraud.
Starting point is 00:29:20 Yeah, I'm starting to not believe that stat because they lose the hard hit percentage every night. I mean, a lot of times, they lose the hard hit percentage, but that's only because it doesn't matter how hard you hit the ball. It's where you hit the ball, right? And how you hit the ball. And maybe how hard you hit it. And maybe what launch angle and what degree.
Starting point is 00:29:37 And there's a lot of other things now on statcast, Jacob. And I'm confused by all of it. There's too many numbers. I can't do it. Too many numbers. They keep calling Jesse Pony Jesse. I don't know what that means. I do not know what that means, nor do I really feel like I should address it.
Starting point is 00:29:55 But I will address Jesse not being here. Jesse literally worked every single day in the month of July. Yes, he did. The man deserved the weekend. Every month, every day in the month of July. So somebody had to make him take a day off, and we did. And that's why he isn't here. But he will be back on Monday, so don't you fret?
Starting point is 00:30:14 And that will definitely make this show better, right? That's when we edge out the PHNX Cardinals show. But speaking of edging everybody out, what a pickup Josh Bell looks like now, Jacob for the Arizona Diamondbacks. I know there are a lot of people, especially some of you in this chat that wanted Yandy Diaz over Josh Bell. well at least for the time being advantage bell because he comes in and has an incredible night hitting two home runs in his debut and also getting some tremendous hugs from heraldopredomo yeah no i mean look you needed a guy with production this is i mean it's one day in so like i'm
Starting point is 00:30:51 not going to count my chickens before they hatch is that the is that the statement count count my chicken don't count your chickens before they're hatch yeah that yeah yeah yeah they might be dead inside of those eggs. Sure. If we want to get morbid on this show. It's pretty dark, Jacob. I don't know why you went there. He's obviously not going to hit two home runs in every single game.
Starting point is 00:31:11 He's not going to hit a home run in every single game. He's not going to hit a home run in every single game. He might hit a few more for sure. But it is very quickly looking like a Mike Hazen master class here. He traded some cash. Cash considerations? For a guy who's got 16 home runs and is hitting 250 this year. And that you,
Starting point is 00:31:30 Once again, you needed a guy who was going to come in and fill out some production. And guess what? He's a switch hitter. He can play against lefties and righties. Yes. Yeah. I mean, and he did it tonight from both sides of the plate, didn't he? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Yep. Yeah. He did. What a stud. And for that reason, Josh Bell, of course, is our Kingsnake of tonight's game. Two home runs in his debut. Just an amazing night. And the Diamondbacks needed every bit of the.
Starting point is 00:32:00 that like every home run every run was needed in this nine to eight victory so uh you can't really cannot really understate how important his knight was as a new member of this team yeah no i mean it just you couldn't have asked for more he's um he's going to provide some pop look he's going to have his moments he's going to he's going to look like a baseball player that hits lots of really long home runs because that's what you got him for and he i mean kudos to the Kudos to Tori, kudos to the staff. He comes in. This is game one for Josh Bell as an Arizona Diamondback. And they hit him fourth.
Starting point is 00:32:38 They put him in the cleanup spot. That says a lot about what they think about this guy. It's absolutely the truth. And of course, I think Connor Mormon there in the chat is the second deback to ever hit homers from both sides of the plate in his debut. Pretty good, right? I think the other one was Felipe Lopez on April 6th. 2009. You also have the Diamondbacks having two players in this game hitting two or more home runs
Starting point is 00:33:08 for the first time since Josh Rojas and David Peralta did it against the Cubs back in 2020. That was the Josh Rojas three. Josh Rojas, Brigley Field game. The win must have been Whippen because Josh Rojas hitting three homers in a game is. They brought that up on the broadcast too. And that might be a reason why the Diamondbacks had their big first inning because they said the wind was moving early and then it kind of stopped and everything. Yeah. It went fairly stale there in the ballpark. So I wouldn't be surprised if that kind of killed a lot of that offense that we saw early on.
Starting point is 00:33:39 And at least they did it before the Pittsburgh Pirates could hit any home runs. That's for sure. I want to just when I know we're talking about Josh Bell, but like when does this discussion start? We've already started this discussion. Us for sure, but I'm talking league league wide when does this discussion start? I don't I don't know what more could tell Marte needs to. to do because we've said like the reason why this team is dangerous is because Cotel was doing it on his own for a significant portion of the year and they were still
Starting point is 00:34:10 winning ball games. You know, at times Cotel Marte was was the driving force behind this offense. Now when they get contributions from two or three other guys in any given night, like they got from Geraldo Pardomo and they got from Josh Bell and I won't take anything away from, you know, everybody else kind of chipping in. And this was a real team effort here on the Diamondbacks portion. You know, like nobody really stood out aside from Bell and Marte, because both of those guys had two home runs tonight.
Starting point is 00:34:37 And it's hard to outdo that. You want to do that. Projected stats. Let's hear it. After tonight, Cattel Marte is projected. And somebody threw this in the chat earlier, but I'm not going to go dig it back. Shout out to them for giving me this idea.
Starting point is 00:34:49 He is projected to finish the season. Obviously, batting averages and projections stay the same. He's projected to finish the season hitting 303 with 38 homers. and 108 runs driven in. Let's go. He's got a 923 OPS right now. That's what he's hitting right now at 303. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:06 I mean, Catell's been the man. He's been the man for this team. And I think he's been the man in the National League. When you look back over the course of this season, Cotel Marte was the captain of this ship. He was the driving force behind this offense. And I'm sorry. Virulencia, I'm probably butchering that.
Starting point is 00:35:26 I think you're probably right. there could tell martay is only point three war behind otani for the national league leader what else is he got to do i don't know because like giving credit to otani for the fact that that war is completely generated by his offense and of course you know everybody knows this is secretly a dodger podcast as you guys accuse it of being but i mean could tell katel has been great on both sides of the ball and i mean again that shows how impressive you know otani's you know production has been purely from an offensive standpoint because Catell is still behind him despite the fact he's having the offensive year he's having and he's also having the defensive defensive year he's having. Yeah, I love
Starting point is 00:36:05 Shohay Otani and I like I hate that he's a Dodger, but it's hard to not like show Hey Otani for what he is for the game of baseball. Like there's a very realistic chance if he can stay healthy that he ends up one of the best players of all time. I'm going to throw that out right now. However, he is not pitching this year. He is exclusively a designated hitter. He doesn't play in the field. Catelle Marte is playing gold glove level defense at second base and getting it done at the same rate as Shohei Otani at the plate. Which puts a lot more on, you know, on your body, right?
Starting point is 00:36:38 Yeah. When you just, when you just are a DH, right? Like, you're not really putting that much stress on your body over the course of 162 game season. So I think for Catell to be doing it, you know, I still, I still think about his nomination to the All-Star team and how he comes. kind of got teary-eyed and he talked about playing pain free for the first time in two years. And I think that's a thing that you'll never get a straight answer out of a lot of ballplayers
Starting point is 00:37:08 and you'll never really understand what it's like to have to go out there and play 162 games with little nagging, you know, injuries like Pardomo's knee is not going to be okay tomorrow. It's not. Like there's going to be a gigantic bruise. You might see him sit. he's probably going to sit and I wouldn't be surprised. I mean, the adrenaline and everything allowed that man to get back up and hit a very important double for this team.
Starting point is 00:37:35 Again, you can't take any running, any scoring plays in this game were critical considering the outcome. So you can't take anything away from any single at bat. But, you know, you could say that Pardomo's at bat was like crucial, the most important one of this game. You could say that about all the home runs. They hit the first thing. The Josh Bell or all this champion.
Starting point is 00:37:53 about the gospel one, right? Like there were just so many heroes tonight. And this team, that's how this team wins. Toro will say it over and over and over again, but that's how this team wins. Yeah, Perdomo actually scared me a lot earlier in the game. I think it was his first at bat. He kind of swung really awkwardly at a pitch and his knee kind of buckled on him a little bit. And he, I don't know if you noticed this.
Starting point is 00:38:13 He walked around wincing a little bit. That scared me. I would not be surprised if he comes out of this game a little banged up. Obviously, I don't, if he stayed in, I'm going to. I assume it was nothing serious. But then taking a foul ball off the knee, that solidifies it for me that he probably is going to get the day off tomorrow. And if he doesn't, salute to Jerry P.
Starting point is 00:38:34 No shit. He's the man. He's the winning baseball player. He wants to go out there every day and help this team win baseball games. I get it. But dude, if you need it, take the day off. You did what you needed to do. We just talked about, you know, what he did for J-Mart, though.
Starting point is 00:38:47 And there's just those intangibles that you can never really quantify. you can never really like put out there as to what he does for this team. What I saw was when Jordan Montgomery was asked about it after one of his outings where Pardoma was out there and Pardomo's a little meeting on the mound really seemed to pick Gumbi up. It was a sincerity in his face where like even he looked like he didn't really believe it, but he was like, yeah, man, Bredomo, you know? And it's just like one of those moments where you realize how important this guy is to his team.
Starting point is 00:39:21 And it really doesn't matter if he goes out there and hits 2.30 or whatever, you know, like, he can, he can contribute in ways that go beyond the box score. And he's a winner. He's a winner. And he helps his team win. Yeah, it's really kind of a struggle watching Jordan Lawler do his thing. And obviously he's hurt right now. But like knowing that like Jerry P means so much to this team, but you just have a top 20 prospect in baseball just kind of. of sitting there knocking at the door and it's like, what do you do here? How do you manage that? I don't know. I don't want to think about it tonight.
Starting point is 00:40:02 Yeah. It's a, well, it's, it's the Diamondbacks are going to have some of those problems for the next two seasons, right? Like, it's not just problems that, that are done this year. Like, they're going to be maybe even bigger problems next year. The key here is that, like, talent pushes talent. And, you know, in baseball in general, like, you're always playing for your job.
Starting point is 00:40:25 Yeah. There's nobody. There's nobody on the diamond whose job is secure, right? So, you know, you have to always be performing at your best, or there is somebody that's always looking to come over and take your job. I think it's the only sport that kind of works that way, too. Like basketball, like there are good players in the free agent market, but pretty much any top level player that's going to make an impact is on a team
Starting point is 00:40:47 and gets relevant minutes. Football is the same way. Yeah. Hockey is the same way. say was the coyotes are rip but like baseball there's always guys out there that can make an impact and like that's it's an entry i mean it's wally pip that's what it is well everybody in the chat is including benjamin hunley and alice are saying luller needs to play third and that yeah i agree i would probably agree with that statement or domo jomo can play third too yeah i agree
Starting point is 00:41:13 of course uh these this night of hitting home runs made me thirsty and i do not have enough to drink in my house in fact i'm going to tell you a sad story. I had my very last beer, Jacob, in preparation for this show. It was my last beer from a 15 pack of our friends at Four Peaks, cracked it open, poured it into my handy-dandy little Stanley Stein that I have. And something occurred while I was a way out of the room where between Cosmo the wonder mutt, my daughter, and my wife, somebody who won't fess up to you. it knocked over my last beer and spilled it everywhere. And I just wanted people to feel sorry for me, really by telling this story. But I really also wanted to express how thirsty I am and how much
Starting point is 00:42:05 I need to make my way over to Circle K, not only for their beer cave to restock now that I'm completely out of beers, but I do need a froster. I'm contractually obligated to receive one every time I do a show here. I know they're only 79 cents. I know maybe I should have asked for more in my writer when I decided to sign on here. Starting point is 00:43:15 Also, again, this goes along with me being thirsty. Don't forget the sun is trying to kill you. Right, at all times. That's what the sun. It's a life giver, they say. It gives us like our environment and our planet Earth. I say it's trying to blind you at all time. So make sure you plan accordingly with a good pair of sunglasses. Starting point is 00:44:31 Try for yourself the Shades rated five stars by over 300,000 people. Well, Jacob, of course, I had to do this like bit now, and I know I might have been lying about Jesse. I might have not have been lying about Jesse. I may or may not be a notorious liar. Jacob might always tell the truth or he might also be a habitual liar. I can't really answer that. I know one thing, though, I didn't get a chance to introduce him, but our guy, Kyle Cooper, is on the ones of Tuesday night. That man never lies. He only tells truths.
Starting point is 00:45:08 And of course, we know the numbers also don't lie. So let's take a look at tonight's number. Tonight's number that does not lie is 102.9. 102.9. Jacob, do you want to make any guesses? What could that be? What could it be? Well, per Steve Gilbert for our buddy, Steve Gilbert over at MLB.com, that is the mile per hour of the fastball that Josh Bell hit off,
Starting point is 00:45:36 or Aldous Chapman. That home run that Josh Bell hit, the 102.9 mile per hour fastball, was the fastest pitch ever hit for a home run since ball tracking began in 2000. Good. Is that good? I mean, it came off the bat and it just like, I mean, if the pitch is coming 103 and you square it out, that ball better, it ball go far.
Starting point is 00:46:00 Ball go far when ball fast. Ball hard. Hit ball hard, ball go a long way. Well, of course, shout out to Josh Bell. Again, there were some pre-game roster moves and decisions being made. Jacob, Josh Bell was part of that. That activation went very well for the Diamondbacks tonight. Dave and Smith was option.
Starting point is 00:46:21 again, my condolences to everyone out there. Also part of those roster moves, Umberto Castiano's was recalled, and Bryce Jarvis was unfortunately moved to the IL. It sounds like he will miss the rest of the season. He's on the 15-day aisle, but it sounds like he will not be back with a sprained right elbow. And that sucks because Jarvis was really having a great season,
Starting point is 00:46:43 especially recently. And the Dinobbacks can use all of the reliable arms that they can get at this point. So, I don't know, I don't know, Barto Castiano's, it compared to the way Bryce Jarvis was pitching. Yeah, Bryce, Bryce Jarvis, that hurts. Obviously, as you get further down the line here, there are a lot of roster decisions that are going to have to be made. They give news, obviously, and I'm not sure if you plan on talking about this in a bit. So I'm sorry if I'm jumping the gun.
Starting point is 00:47:11 No, go ahead. But Erod next week, Tuesday. He was in the, he was a real person. He was in the dugout. We saw it with our own eyes. Yeah, was it. I mean, that might have been Derek and an Erod mask for all we know. Hollywood effects make it easy to just, you know, you can ask AI to put someone in and it'll do it for you.
Starting point is 00:47:32 All the work is done. Yeah. And obviously, Meryl is, he's making a rehab start with Hillsborough on the sixth. So four days from now, Merrill will make his first rehab start. You will be getting guys back. So while it hurts to lose Bryce Jarvis, I don't foresee Humberto, Castiano sticking up because you are going to have to make the decision. And unfortunately, I think as good as he's pitching, I think Ryan Nelson probably shifts back into the bullpen when those two guys come back.
Starting point is 00:48:02 That's just my two cents. Obviously, we could get into the hole with how bad Monty has been. You put him into the bullpen. What do you do with all of this? Obviously, he's got no options. Ryan Nelson has options. I'm not saying option him. He is now the perfect candidate to go fill the Bryce Jarvis role because you will need somebody.
Starting point is 00:48:20 on this run to eat innings. And he is pitching at a lights out pace right now. The big news before the game, Paul Seawald officially removed as this team's closer. Just one day after Tori LaBullo made it sound like people were insane for even suggesting such a thing. It happens. And of course, ESPO, I think put it best yesterday. He very eloquently said how, you know, this team.
Starting point is 00:48:50 needs to treat Paul Seawald like an asset still. You can't just dump him at this point. It's not like Paul Seawall doesn't still have. He's got value. Value, right? It's just, you just don't believe in him there with the game online in the ninth inning. And rightfully so, I think at least lately, he's proven that he just isn't reliable in that in that role.
Starting point is 00:49:13 Yeah, he's going to go get some low. Look, put him into some low leverage innings. Let him get some, like at the end. by the end of whatever was happening with Paul Seawald in those ninth innings, you could clearly tell that he was completely shell-shocked. He could not throw a pitch for a strike because if he did, he knew it was going to get hammered. That was it. All of his confidence was gone.
Starting point is 00:49:40 Give him a sixth inning. Give him a fifth inning. Give him something where in a blowout game put him in when it's eight to three, whether you're winning or losing. Give him an inning. Let him find the strike zone. Let it because look, Paul Seawald doesn't blow you away. He throws 91, 92, and he's got a slider that doesn't really move all that much.
Starting point is 00:50:00 Where Paul Seawald thrived is because he was deceptive and he could locate. Batters had a really hard time guessing what was coming, whether it was the fastball. Honestly, he buckled a ton of guys. When he was like on, if you watched him closely, he was buckling a ton of guys. So give him some low leverage stuff. Let him pitch in a blowout. game, let him find the zone. Like, if he gets hammered, he gets hammered, right?
Starting point is 00:50:25 But as long as he's finding the strike zone and figuring out what made him so, and Tori said it himself, he's got a delivery issue. Yes, he's got a delivery issue. And he's got to iron that out. Yeah. Well, as it stands right now, the Diamondbacks obviously don't have time to wait for him. No, no. You've got to win baseball games.
Starting point is 00:50:48 You have to win baseball games. and the decision makes all the sense in the world. For some people, it probably came later than they wished. I think that I think Tori gave him an ample amount of time to get things back. I mean, you got to remember the stretch that he went on before he started blowing saves. And of course, yes, there were a lot of games here over the month of July that the Diamondbacks did win. But it could have been like not just their best month in franchise history, but the Diamondbacks could honestly be sitting in a position
Starting point is 00:51:22 where they are close to, if not in first place, in the National League West, which is crazy because the Dodgers are losing tonight to the Oakland Athletics. I don't know what's happening with that team, but I hope it doesn't get fixed no matter what the hell is wrong. Honestly, the perfect world is us and the Padres battle for the division. The Dodgers somehow slip into a wild card spot, and we go from there.
Starting point is 00:51:47 people in the chat are talking about paul see while still having an issue with the oblique which is very very possible could be possible yeah and as a pitcher i feel like that's going to impact you more than it's going to even impact you know a position player like you know like christian walker or something of the sort so uh we we talked about that earlier these injuries these they they play hurt right they don't play injured but they play hurt and sometimes playing hurt involves you being slower being worse at the plate, being worse on the mound. These are all things that can add up to the point where your delivery, your swing, your performance is impacted by not being healthy.
Starting point is 00:52:26 And again, it struck me as so amazing when I heard Catele say that, because we know Cotel went through his struggles with the hamstring, but that hamstring never felt good to him for two years. And that just showed you how these guys can tell. you to try to play through the pain and make it work. And I mean, that even involves the, you know, the stretched last year and probably part of the playoffs. So it's, you know, it could definitely be that.
Starting point is 00:52:58 And if that's the case, just give him some time off, you know, give Paul Seawall to rest. And maybe he can be a value to this team as we get closer to, you know, the end of the season. As it stands right now, the Diamondbacks are still in a good position. They are firmly in control of second place right now. second wildcard spot at 59 and 51. And they have not, I guess I couldn't say firm because, of course, the Padres could flip-flop with them. But there's some distance that's starting to be created there.
Starting point is 00:53:28 The St. Louis Cardinals are three games back. The Pirates are three and a half games back. The Giants are four and a half games back. Blake Snell threw a no-hitter tonight. That does not move them up five games in the standing, no matter how many no-hitters he throws. But New York Mets, of course, are still in it, one game back in the wild card. and this is going to be a dog fight all the way through the end of the season.
Starting point is 00:53:47 But now the Diamondbacks are in a position to kind of, you know, hold this, you know, hold where they're at. And maybe make a move along with the Padres on the top of the, you know, division. This could be a fun, fun race. These things get down to it. And the Diamondbacks may be in it in more than one way.
