Big day here, big game that the Diamondbacks here.
have in the finale against the San Francisco Giants.
So we have our guy, the one, the only thunderstick, Jesse Friedman from Snake's territory,
joining us to talk about this game and talk about Cotel Marte being named an all-star starter.
Jesse, great to see you again once trying to make sure that your appearance is on this show.
Do not hurt this team.
Last night, a little bit of a heartbreaker losing an extra innings there to the Giants by a score of 6 to 5.
but still a pretty valiant effort by this team,
by one Cattell Marte,
to have those late ninth inning heroics
and to tie it up to send it into extras.
We've seen Cotel do that time and time again.
And yeah,
I was not at all surprised.
You know,
I don't think Cotel has quite looked the same offensively here
over the past several games.
I think he entered last night's game
in a two for 22 skid or something like that.
Granted,
it was four for three.
Going back to that game where the fans said,
an appropriate thing to him, right?
Yeah, I don't know if that legitimately shook him in some way or caused him to, you know,
lose focus or whatever it was.
But yeah, he hadn't been looking quite the same.
And then he comes up in a huge spot against one of the better back end relievers in baseball.
And he hits a game tying to him Homer.
And it's like, yeah, well, that's just kind of what, what could tell Marte does.
Yeah, it's who he is.
And I honestly, like I said, I've said this on the show.
and I also said that it's based on nothing.
It's based on me knowing no information other than watching Cotel Marte play baseball
for a very long time.
He's had the spotlight on him plenty.
Don't get me wrong.
He's had huge moments.
He's had hitting streaks that he's been able to overcome the pressure of extending
those hitting streaks, set an MLB record in the playoffs, right?
But I do feel like all of the attention that he got from that incident.
It was very positive attention.
it was very loving attention,
but I felt like it was like a lot of attention
that Cotel might have felt the need to like deliver for.
You know, like I want to hit a home run
because the crowd gave me a standing ovation here at home
when we came back after it and things like that.
Like I don't know if that's the case.
I don't know, but it felt like when you saw some of his swings,
again, that he was trying to hit it to Flagstaff
and he was trying to hit three home runs in one swing, right?
But Cattel, the secret is out on Cotel.
Catelle. This is not a thing anymore where national attention is not on Cotel. He received the most votes for a National League player there in phase two of this voting process, Jesse. And it just felt really good to finally see an Arizona Diamondbacks player received their flowers. It did feel a little bit like maybe that incident helped, you know, like maybe people were trying to like when they saw Cotel Marte's name there on the ballot and they know what, you know, happened. They were willing to show them a little extra.
love, but he also very much deserves this honor. He has been one of the best baseball players
in all of the majors. I think he won it 70 to 30, right? 70% Catell, 30% Tommy Edmund,
something like that. And that is great. I mean, as you said, he was the leading vote getter in
phase two. But to be fair, he probably should have won it like, you know, 95 to 5 or something.
like nothing against Tommy Edvin, but this was not a close race comparing these two guys.
I mean, Cotel Marte for as good as he was last year and as good as he was in 2019, in 2021, even 2023, certainly going into the playoffs.
He was fantastic.
Catelle is on a different level in 2025.
I mean, he has a 172 WRC plus after hitting that late home run yesterday.
that is far in away the highest WRC plus that Cotel has ever had in a major league season.
And I mean, he has 18 home runs in 60 games.
Like that's ridiculous.
I mean, that's like a pace of 45 plus home runs in a whole season.
39 RBI, 18 home runs, 999 OPS.
His numbers this year are crazy.
And one thing that Jesse said that I think he got wrong, everything against Tommy Edmund.
Yeah.
Literally everything against Tommy.
You're never going to get David to excuse that.
We talked about.
They don't play the same sport.
Well, it's the,
that's the fraudulent voting process here, right?
Where like it feels like there's always this wave of the more popular team.
In this case, it's a very, very popular team in the Dodgers getting votes for guys that
probably don't deserve it, probably don't deserve to receive nearly the amount of,
love that they're getting.
It's a flawed process when it at least comes to voting for starters in the major league,
you know, in the All-Star game, right?
But luckily, they have the rest of the process, which should allow some other Diamondbacks players to get in.
But right now, this is all about Cotel.
We have Tory talking about Cotel, again, no longer being a secret and everybody kind of knowing about how good he actually is.
Yeah, that feeling is emerging quickly.
I think for pre-2020, he was a little bit of a secret here in Arizona in the desert.
but I think the world is quickly taking notice.
The baseball world is quickly taken notice throughout this entire industry of ours.
He is, in my opinion, the best second baseman in the National League.
I hope he gets that nod.
And I feel strongly when I say that, he is still growing and learning and getting better.
But overall, I think he's a household name.
You go on the East Coast, you're going to see people that know Catele now for sure.
I also loved at one point during that, Tori brought up the fact that,
that Catelle no longer looks for white ball middle, but he's also wearing a shirt there that says white ball middle with Cattell's face on it.
I don't know if he intentionally did that, but it was very much like saying the name of the movie in the movie, Jesse.
But yeah, Cotel Marte obviously deserves all of the accolades, all of the acknowledgement, all of the achievements, or all of this praise, right?
He's been an outstanding player.
And again, like you said, he was able to do all of this, put up these numbers that he's put up this year in a very short stretch.
being injured and missing time, slashing now 300, 404 with a 595 slug.
All that's good for a 99 OPS and those 18 home runs and 39 RBI.
Just an impressive, you know, first half for him that wasn't really a half.
Yeah, just remarkable.
I mean, and you think about the fact that Ketel missed a month.
It feels like a distant memory at this point.
But, you know, where would his numbers be if he didn't miss that month?
Where might the Diamondbacks be, frankly, if Kattel didn't miss that month.
Yeah, I mean, it's been just an unbelievable season for him and glad he's getting the respect that he is long deserved.
That is for sure.
I know this is probably a topic for another time because we could debate this for very long.
But, I mean, does Kattel now sit atop of the organization for you as one of the best in franchise history?
I mean, like, again, it's like there's a lot of debate that you could put here.
here, but there's for room for four faces on that Mount Rushmore of Arizona Diamondbacks
Greats. And it feels like Catelle might have just saddled up next to Paul Goldschmidt on that,
on that Mount Rushmore. I think that's pretty fair to say. I mean, looking at career war
in Diamondbacks history, Randy Johnson, of course, is still number one. I'm not sure that I was
going to get there. But yeah, I mean, Paul Goldschmidt is at 39.9. And then Catell is,
at 31.8, given the contract that the Diamondbacks just signed with Catel before the season started,
I think it's pretty dang likely that Catel Marte before too long is going to pass Paul Goldschmidt
for career war. And it doesn't necessarily mean that Catel is, you know, a better player than
than Gold. I mean, Goldie was obviously elite for basically his entire career in Arizona. I think
Catel has been a little bit less consistent than that. But, I mean, Catel at his
best. Like what we've seen this year is, I mean, you could probably put his numbers this year up against,
you know, any season that Goldschmidt had. Granted, he did miss that month, which is, you know,
that that's going to limit what his end of season numbers can ultimately look like. But yeah,
I think, I mean, in terms of offensive players, Derek, I mean, I think it's Goldie. I think it's
Luis Gonzalez. And I think Cotel Marte is kind of right up there in that conversation at this point.
That's a great, great group to be a part of.
third career
All-Star nomination or selection
there for Cattel's second consecutive
starting selection at second base.
He is the first National League second baseman
to win consecutive fan-elected
starting assignment since Chase Utley did it
five times in a row from 2006 to 2010.
Like, it seems, I'm old,
so that seems like yesterday to me, but that's 15 years
since second baseman has done that,
which just goes to show how there's really
not that many elite second baseman in major league baseball.
It's a great point.
And it's,
I mean,
it's a huge reason why Ketel is as valuable as he is,
is that the Diamondbacks are getting elite level production from a position
where,
you know,
pretty much every other team in the league has like a league average player or,
or worse.
I mean,
the fact that Tommy Edmund was the runner up in this process.
I mean,
Tommy Edmund is hitting below 250 with,
I think it's a 103 OPS plus.
Like he's basically been a league average player.
Maybe there are players who should have been finalists over Tommy Edmund,
obviously playing for the Dodgers, gives him a bit of a leg up there.
But you're not going to find any team getting anywhere close to the production that the
diamondbacks are at second base.
Jesse, with that being said and how much better he is, how many more years of Cateau
doing exactly this before we're talking about Hall of Fame discussions?
I did have this thought recently.
Like, is there a path where Ketel if he just rattled off, you know,
continued to rattle off these crazy seasons like he's had the past couple of years?
Like even though his career up to this point is, you know,
certainly does not look hall of fame worthy.
If he just keeps doing this for long enough,
you feel like at a certain point he would put himself in that conversation.
You know, he's at 34.3 career war.
right now. I think getting to 50 is kind of like the bare minimum for for any kind of consideration.
So he's 16 war away from that. And, you know, the debacks just signed him to this big deal where,
you know, he could be a diamond back through 2031. So that, you know, that's six more seasons
after this one. That is enough time to accumulate, you know, another 15, 20, 25 war to put himself
in that conversation. But he's, he'd have to be pretty consistent. You know, it's been, it's been a little
off and on for him so far.
He's obviously struggled with injuries.
So I think it's an uphill battle, but I don't think it's impossible that that
Kattel brings himself into that conversation at some point.
It could be one of those situations, Jesse, where honestly, the only thing holding him back
might be the fact that he is going to miss out on MVP awards and other potential accolades
that would help that case due to what's going on over here in Los Angeles in our own division.
right but if kattel i think can add to that trophy case and can bring home you know some sort of
MVP whether it's a some sort of playoff you know like world series MVP or something of that
sort before his time is over i think it helps solidify his case but the thing i love most about
cutel is i feel like when all is sudden done marty might end up being the longest tenure diamond back
in franchise history and i feel like every time we speak to him he reiterates the fact that he
loves it here. And in fact, my favorite quote from him was Steve Zinsmeister was talking to him,
getting a little brief interview with him about the All-Star selection. And he said, Arizona is my house.
Now, I know he was going for Arizona is my home, but I want to put Arizona as my house on a shirt,
Jesse, because Arizona is Ketel's house. Whose house? Ketel's house, right? So it felt very cool to hear him
say that. And I mean, again, it's just, it's great to see a guy that,
wasn't even the centerpiece of the trade that he was involved in that brought him here to Arizona
flourish in the way that he has in his time here. It's just been, it's been, again,
Damon's a little tired of good stories and my fun, fun, happy, sappy stories. But there's a great
story there in regards to how Cotel became, you know, one of the best baseball players here
in his time as a Diamondback. That would be pretty remarkable. I mean, I think it's a player
option for him in 2013.
So, I mean, if he picks that up, then I mean, he would have been a diamond back from
2017 when they first acquired him to 2031, which is 15 years with one team.
I mean, that is, you know, I mean, Paul Goldschmidt was here from, I think, 2011 was his
debut, right?
And then he obviously was traded after the 2018 season going into 2019.
So that was eight seasons for Goldie.
and Goldie is obviously this franchise icon.
We're talking about Catelle potentially have been a diamond back for twice as long as Goldie, essentially, when all is said and done.
That's a crazy, crazy thought.
It really is. It really is.
Well, and Cotel might not be the Diamondbacks only All-Star.
Obviously, we move on to this other phase where guys could be selected.
Tori discussed it briefly prior to yesterday's game.
Here's what he had to say about some other guys he thinks deserves the nod.
Very, very helpful. I want to remain as optimistic as possible. I think we have several that deserve nods.
Gino is one of the top, one of the guys that's tops on my list. I think Corvin's right there.
I think the next layer is Pardomo and Merrill Kelly. You know, Merrill, I think, could, his whip is just barely over one.
he wins today he's tied for the league lead and wins he's going to have a chance to go out one more
time at least and throw an ad to that total and you know i want i want the best for these guys
and they all deserve it in my opinion but i know that i'm not the only person making this
decision hopefully the players who vote for the next level of guy has put his name or put their
names in there i think they all deserve it those four that i mentioned i think we could all
agree with that. Obviously, we don't know
how Corbyn's
injury is going to prevent him from participating
in that. Tori suggested a few times
that Corbyn's working
his way back to try to be ready by the
All-Star break, which is really weird considering
we're talking about a
fractured bone in your hand.
I don't know if there's anything you can actually
do to get yourself ready faster.
I do know Corbin does not take
days off. He does not take time off. We know that
from his shoulder injury when he's still in the
minor leagues. We know that now that he's
out there taking grounders and doing everything else that he can, taking fly balls.
That doesn't involve that hand injury.
He's he's staying ready at all times.
And that could be a possibility.
But I saw on Ken Rosenthal's selections or predictions, I believe that it was that Gino had made his team.
And I do feel like of those guys that Tori mentioned, not only is Gino the most likely All-Star, but also possibly the guy that deserves it the most, despite the fact that he had himself a really,
really bad outing yesterday.
Yeah, yesterday wasn't great.
We can just set that one aside.
But yeah, Gino,
Gino, I think, he has a legitimate shot here,
especially with what happened to Max Muncie yesterday.
Probably worth mentioning Max Muncie,
pretty ugly injury that happened at third base
in that Dodgers game yesterday.
So, you know, you hate to see that,
although I guess Damon maybe doesn't.
but I think it you have no idea of the look he just gave me Jesse no comment I think that one one way or another
I think it I think it probably did up Gino's chances of being able to play in that game
manny Machado of course is going to start at third base but you know Gino has 25 for 26 home runs
and in 69 RBI at this point to go with an OPS that's close to 900 I mean it's not like it's just
all power from him. So,
so yeah, I think Gino
totally deserves it. And with
the Muncie injury, I think there's a pretty good, pretty
good chance there. Flea ball
brings up something that's kind of been a point of topic
all year long. He said, wouldn't Cotel be
better hitting third behind Corbyn and Jerry?
Hitting third is typically reserved for
the best all-around hitter. That's Cotel.
And he's not
entirely wrong, but it is
very, it's been, it's been very
well stated by Tori. It's been,
he's made it very clear.
Cotel will not hit lower in the lineup than second.
Cotel wants to hit first or second and that's it.
And I think honestly,
there are times where players need to be flexible and do what they are asked of by their manager.
But when it comes to something like this,
I would not mess with the formula of success that you currently have with Cotel,
considering that's what he's asking to hit first or second in the lineup.
I'm not sure what his reasoning is behind that.
I'm not sure why Cotel likes hitting that high.
in the lineup you are right i mean it does feel like hotel with his power and and with his other
numbers that it might be you know beneficial to this team it honestly be beneficial to this team to have
anyone that's hitting better right now than payvin hitting third paven really does seem like he's
struggling there and it's it's causing the lineup to struggle and especially when those guys in the
first two spots no matter who it is are getting on base seems like it's really causing the offense
to stall out when you don't have a consistent hitter there in the three hole but uh
I got to honor Catell's wishes on that one, I feel like.
Yeah, it's tough.
Pavin really has struggled lately.
I totally see where people are coming from not wanting him to hit third anymore.
I think that's a valid point.
But I don't know if the, I don't know if the solution there is to move Catelle down.
I mean, who are you moving up at that point?
You know, it's just a, it's just a tough situation to be in.
I know a lot of people have also been asking like Corbin Carroll when he's healthy,
should the Diamondbacks move him down because he's hitting all these home runs and it feels like
a lot of them are solo shots. I think Catell's that a lot of solo home runs as well this year.
So I could maybe see if you wanted to keep Pardomo in the leadoff spot where he reached
base five times yesterday. Like he's certainly doing what you'd want him to there.
You know, if you wanted him to lead off and then maybe Cattel hit second and Corbyn hits third,
like I wouldn't have a problem with that. But at the same time, I don't think, I don't think,
I don't think the order of your lineup really matters very much.
A lot of people have done studies on this.
And really,
you just want your best hitters hitting toward the top of the lineup,
making sure they get the highest number of played appearance as possible
over the course of a full season.
Beyond that,
I don't think it matters all that much,
you know,
who's second,
who's third and all that.
Diamondbacks still have the third or fourth highest team OPS in baseball.
So to be honest,
offense isn't the problem.
Pitching is the problem.
It's been the problem all year.
continues to be the problem.
Starting pitching actually has been pretty good
over the last four or five starts for the
Diamondbacks, but the bullpen, really,
it's like once you start to see
one thing improve, the other thing goes
away. The bullpen starts to get a little
better and the starting pitching is awful earlier
in the season. Then the bullpen gets awful
and the starting pitching gets things back on track,
but we can't have both of these
things at the same time. We are going to preview
this upcoming series with the Royals
this weekend and we were going to talk about
this series finale today at Chase

And let me tell you, we are going to have some fun out there at the pool today.
Jesse. I know you're going to be in the press box. I hope to get to see you before all of the shenanigans take place there.
But most importantly, I guess we got to talk about this game in July, on July 3rd, being a must win for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
And again, I know that they've already split this series. And splitting this series in general would be the most Diamondbacks thing this year.
It seems like they are just a 50-50 team.
Mid as mid can be.
No matter how far behind they fall,
they seem to be able to catch up.
And no matter how far ahead they get,
they manage to come right back down Mount 500 and stay right around there.
And it feels like there would be nothing more fitting than splitting this four-game series,
which really doesn't help us know anything about this team at all coming into the All-Star break
and making decisions at the Trade Dead.
line, but is today a must win for the Diamondbacks?
Well, you know me, Derek.
I don't know if I can say that any game in early July is must win.
You can't even say games in September sometimes are must win.
But that's because you're realistic, right?
I mean, again, even winning this game, does it really tip the scales in the favor of the
Diamondbacks being more buyers at the trade deadline?
It's because Jesse is so literal.
That's what it is.
So when you say it's a must win, it's like, well, technically it's not a must win.
It's not because there's still.
It's only a must win.
win if you lose, you're eliminated in Jesse's eyes.
That is, that is technically how it works.
But yeah, it's a very important game.
It is a very important game.
I'm definitely willing to say that.
And yeah, I mean, the Diamondbacks sit.
I think it's just three games out in the wild card despite losing yesterday.
I mean, they've still gained a couple of games here in the past few days.
So you certainly want to keep that momentum going.
But I mean, this is a team that I think people are really feeling the highs when the debacks win a few games in a row.
And they're really feeling the lows when they lose a few games in a row.
But at the end of the day, it feels like all roads lead back to pretty much being a 500 baseball team,
which is where they sit right now.
You know, this is kind of what 500 baseball teams do is sometimes they look good and they kind of get you to believe.
And sometimes they don't look so good.
and they get you to think that they have no hope for contending, right?
I mean, they are exactly 500 at home.
They are exactly 500 on the road.
That is just kind of the team that they've been so far this season.
Well, and it goes beyond just the record, right?
It's crazy how much of their analytics and things all kind of lead you back to this being just this, this type of team.
Like there's not a lot that would say to you in the statistics that the Diamondbacks are better than this besides their offense, right?
their offensive numbers are great.
And you look at those offensive numbers and you're like, wow.
But then it's so funny because just to bring them back down,
their pitching is just as bad as good as their offense has been.
So that once again evens the scales and brings us right back down to why they're a 500 baseball team.
Their relief pitching is terrible.
They're starting pitching, although it's gotten better lately,
has still been terrible over the course of the season.
And again, today the Diamondbacks have Brandon fought going up against Robbie Ray for the Giants,
who's very, very good, been very good for this year.
But I want to see Brandon Fought shove today, Jesse.
I want to see him go out there.
And I want to see the Brandon Fought that we saw over the first month of this season.
And I don't know how to get back there.
But maybe we have James McCann look him in the eye and tell him that he's better than he's,
than he's pitching because it seemed to work with Zach Gallant.
Maybe that's the secret.
I don't know.
Big body James McCann.
Let's go.
Fought has had one outing.
against the Giants already this season.
And unfortunately, it was one of his worst outings of the year.
He only made it through four innings, gave up four runs on six hits.
I remember it just felt like his command was really off that day.
But, you know, I think Fodas looked better lately.
He really hung in there in that game against the Marlins,
where it looked like disaster was going to strike in the first inning.
And he struck out three guys in a row to escape trouble and finish the day,
two earned runs in five innings.
with seven strikeouts, you'll certainly take that.
So maybe this is an opportunity here for Fott to continue that forward momentum.
I think he is a better pitcher than how he's been pitching so far this year.
Yeah, I agree with you on that.
Well, beyond the Giants, the Diamondbacks have the Royals coming up, Jesse,
and we were just going to do a quick preview here of this three-game set with the Royals
because we talked about them facing some weaker opponents.
Not to say the Royals have been a terrible team,
but the Diamondbacks are catching them at a time when they're not playing.
their best baseball. The royals here at a glance are 40 and 47 this season. They have a minus 35
run differential and they are two and eight in their last 10. They are one of the worst offensive
teams in baseball. They're like the opposite of the diamondbacks here. Their stats sit here at a 662
OPS which is tied for 27th. Meanwhile, I would commit murder to have the diamond backs. I was starting
pitching and relief pitching ERA like this.
The Royals, despite their
record being 40 and 47, have
the fifth best starting pitching ERA at
3.46 and the sixth
best relief pitching ERA there
at 3.55. You could argue their
combined stats make the Royals one of
the best pitching staffs in baseball
overall. Their outs
above average, they have 11 outs
above average this year, which is good for eighth
in Major League Baseball. So
the only thing here is that
that 2 and 8 record in their last 10,
And, you know, Damon and I have talked about it, Jesse, but the Diamondbacks, it feels like they catch bad teams when those bad teams are getting on a roll.
It kind of happened there with the Marlins, obviously, getting swept by the Marlins.
Even happened a little bit with the Rockies, where the Rockies were just so just so happened to be playing their best baseball of their terrible, terrible season when the Diamondbacks were playing them here, at least in this case with the Royals, would feel like the Diamondbacks are catching them at a pretty good time.
and again, we kind of overlooked this series
because it falls smack dab in the middle of two of the most important series
of the Diamondback season, both being four-game series,
this one with the Giants, and then a four-game series with the Padres.
But that Royal Series, that could be very beneficial for the Diamondbacks
if they can find a way to once again take advantage of a team
that isn't playing good baseball right now and add some wins before the All-Star break.
It's been a rough year for Kansas City.
I mean, even Bobby Witt Jr. has, I mean, he still had a pretty darn good season, but not like what we saw a year ago. He's only hitting 290, you know, with an OPS in the 800 range. He's not quite the MVP candidate that he was a year ago. And then, yeah, the Royals just have not gotten much offense from anywhere else outside of him. So this is a team that the debacks are certainly catching at a good time. Pitching matchup-wise, I don't think we have that officially yet. Nine of the
team has has released their probables for the series but just looking at where these teams are in the
rotation i think the debacks are probably getting chris boobitch who has been very very good for kansas
city this season as a 2.25 ira coming in so that's certainly going to be a challenge for them i think
they'll get michael waka who's had a good year once again in michael lorenzen uh not not so good
of a year from from lorenzen so uh still two very formidable starting pitchers and as you said
Derek this is a royals team that is not playing very good baseball right now and a big opportunity
for the debacks to uh continue to try to push their way up here in the in the nl standings you're right
and again it's just a chance to really again a winning against a team like the royals is not
going to be that thing that tips to scales in favor for mike hayeson to make his decision
and be like, yeah, they beat the Royals.
Now we're going to be buyers, right?
But what it does say here is that the Diamondbacks have to play some of their best baseball
with essentially this deadline coming up.
Like I don't have any clue in what direction they're going to go.
I feel like based on everything I've heard, it feels like the feeling, the sentiment is they
are going to continue to push their chips all in on this season.
but because quite frankly, next year right now is set up to be a disaster,
at least the first half of it, right?
So there's two different routes.
I feel like I would go here.
I understand the pushing the chips in,
but I also understand at this point trying to do something to make yourself,
not even in a competitive team,
just a rounded out roster for the first half of next year,
as far as starting pitching is concerned and other factors, right?
So I don't know what happens.
I don't know how important these games are for my case in the front office.
It still feels very important.
It still feels like what the Diamondbacks do.
And if they can have one of those kind of runs to to lift themselves up above 500
and keep themselves close in that wild card race that this front office will add to this team.
I mean, it might add by subtraction.
We might see one of the expiring free agent contracts be one of the guys that gets traded away.
But they might do something where it.
It ends up being beneficial for this team as well.
I still don't know if they did trade a starting pitcher who they would have fill in.
Maybe that's why Jake Woodford is here.
No, I'm just joking.
Nobody wants to hear that.
Anyway, on the other side of this break, we're going to talk throwback Thursday stuff.
Today was a very famous day in Diamondbacks history for people being fired.
So we're going to get to that on the other side of this break.

Well, let's take a look.
We got some super chats, don't me, Damon?
At least one I see there from Flea Ball.
Flea Ball says, why does Tori keep putting a left-handed together in the lineup,
Pave and Nailer, then two right-handed, Gino Gurriel.
It hurt last night when they brought in a lefty late.
Got any thoughts on that?
Yeah, that's an interesting point.
I think part of Tori's calculus with having Paveen third is that you can pinch hit form like we saw the debacks do yesterday.
And so you kind of feel like you always have the platoon advantage, or at least most of the time, you love the platoon advantage.
We certainly saw Tori do that last year with Jock Peterson and Randall Gritchick.
He had no issues putting Jock in the number three spot because if the team partnered with a lefty, you could just bring in Randall Gritchick. And then, you know, things look pretty good in your favor at that point.
You got that flexibility. Right. Yeah. But, you know, we were talking about this earlier in the show. And I think there's a pretty valid reason to, you know, question if Pavin really should be hitting that high in the lineup, given the way that he's hit for really the past two months or so at this point. It really has been a rough go for him.
So I think there's a case to be made that you should slide someone else up into that spot and maybe shift paving down.
But I'm not totally sure who that is.
I mean, do you want to slide Nailer up?
And then you have, you know, when when Corby and Carol comes back, then you would have two lefties and a Twitch hitter as your first three hitters.
I don't know if people would prefer that.
Or Pardomo stays at the top, you know, we talked about earlier.
Maybe Corbyn Carroll becomes your number three hitter.
Maybe that's something that people would like to see.
but I don't think Tori is going to break off from having Corbyn and Kattel as his top two hitters.
I just don't know if I could really see that happening.
I need to know what Tori's mom thinks.
That's the only person who's- She has the final say.
That's whose lineup advice I want to follow.
But yeah, no, you're totally right.
Jesse, you know what we do on Mondays.
You remember that.
But on Thursdays, we throw back on Thursdays.
We get ready for Serpientis Friday by getting a little purple and teal going.
and on this day, not on this day, but a few days from now, on July 5th, 2000,
Luis Gonzalez did a very fun thing.
He became the first Diamondback player to hit for the cycle when he homered in the ninth inning against the Houston Astros.
So that was the first cycle in team history.
You were just bringing up Gonzo as being one of the best offensive players in baseball.
Obviously, there's no doubt about that.
But when you talk about Diamondbacks legends, it's really cool.
that Gonzo has been a part of the organization in some way for as long as he has, right?
Like it is a guy that literally became a superhero for sports fans here in the Valley delivering that hit for the Diamondbacks in the World Series.
And, you know, it's just, I don't know, like I love seeing Gonzo.
I love talking to him.
He's one of my favorite people that I get to chat with at Chase Field.
But it's just so great that he has become, you know, an ambassador.
for this team considering how much he means to it.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
I mean,
cycles in Diamondbacks history have been a little bit few and far between,
as we said,
I think last week,
Aaron Hill back in 2012.
That's still the most recent one.
But yeah,
I mean,
Gonzo has been just a huge part of the Diamondbacks community
for a very long time.
And he was a pretty darn good hitter back in the day,
even before his 2001 season,
which definitely stands alone is like the best gonzo season that we ever saw sure he was still i mean
he was he was no slouch in in the other years as well i mean gonzo in 2000 uh ended the year
hitting a 311 with a 935 ops uh you know that'll that'll play as well even though he can
get 57 home runs that year you are not wrong plus one time he let me cut in line in front of him
at dutch bros when there was a dutch bros at chase field i know we're i know this is a no free ad friday but
This is more of an ad about Gonzo being just a tremendous dude.
The line was long, people, and he pretended like we just knew each other.
He was like, Derek, I'm over.
Like, he sold it.
He sold it.
It was great.
He's a great guy.
But let's talk about things that aren't so great that happened this week in Diamondbacks
history.
In fact, one day ago on this day in 2004, on July 2nd, 2004, Bob Brenley was replaced
as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks by third base coach, Al Padreke.
and then one day later or two days later on july 4th alpidreke got his first win as a manager on randy
johnson's complete game six to two win versus the minnesota twins uh not no not not not a good
season there in 2004 jesse a lot of cool things happened for randy johnson but this team not very
good and it was the end of bob brindley's time as manager uh i know that there's a lot of people
that listen to Bob in the booth
and want him to just come down
to the dugout right now
and take over as manager.
So Bob Brenley's still a guy,
a lot of people believe in,
but that was the point
that ended his time here
with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
When your team is on track to win 51 games
as the Diamondbacks ultimately did that year,
you know, we talked about it
when Tori Lavello walked through that 52 win season
just a few years ago,
managers don't generally make it out of that.
I mean, that's kind of just the standard across baseball.
It almost doesn't matter what you've done as a manager or if you really had a roster that you
could have done any better with.
You know, it just is kind of common practice.
As the manager, you're just sort of a scapegoat in a season like that.
So obviously, that was a little bit before when I was thinking about baseball on a daily basis.
I was probably spending most of my time like playing with Legos or something at that stage in my life.
Yeah, I don't really remember what the storylines were surrounding this at the time.
But, but yeah, it's no surprise that a season like that is what ultimately did Bob Brenley in.
It's just, again, one of those things when you talk about what you achieve as a manager,
bringing a World Series to the Valley in 2001.
And then three seasons later, not making it through the season, right?
like not making it all the way through the season.
It goes to show that that period of time set a very high bar.
Tori talks about setting a standard for Diamondbacks baseball.
A standard was set back then.
It was set back in 1999 when the Diamondbacks decided one year after they made their debut
that they were going to push their chips all in and try to be good as fast as possible.
And boy, were they.
They were great in those years starting in 1999 going forward.
but it also showed that the leash was very short for, you know, or at least as far as like what they were willing to put up with from a manager in regards to success and failure for a team.
Also, Randy Johnson, like looking at the fact that Randy Johnson once four saw Young's is is still baffling to me.
It's still wild.
But also, Jesse on July 2nd back in 2010, the Arizona Diamondbacks dismissed executive vice president.
president and general manager Josh Burns and manager AJ Hinch from their duties.
They named Jerry DePoto interim general manager and Kirk Gibson as interim manager.
And Kirk Gibson actually made his debut as manager that exact same day against the Los Angeles
Dodgers where he is literally considered statue worthy in that community.
It was one of the, he was the fourth manager since 2001 to make his managerial debut.
against a team he had formerly played for.
And that was in a 12-5 victory over the Dodgers.
I know that's going to fire Damon up.
Yeah, Kirk Gibson, man.
There's some fun memories there of that Diamondbacks team in 2011 doing what they did.
You know, it's funny how it feels like when the Diamondbacks have gotten a new manager,
there's generally been quite a bit of instant success.
Certainly 2011 with Kirk Gibson and his.
his first full season and then Tori Lavello in 2017, I guess a little bit less so with with Chip Hale
in 2015. But, but yeah, Kurt Gibson, he was beloved. He was, I don't know, you probably
covered Kirk Gibson a fair amount. It feels like, it feels like personality wise, he and Tori
Lavello like couldn't be any more different. No, you hit the nail on the head. I was using the word
intensity, but Damon corrected me and he was like, it seems like it would have been intimidating.
and I think that is more of an appropriate word than intensity.
I don't know if Kurt Gibson was really intense, but boy, was he intimidating.
He was intimidating to be in that little press room with.
It was intimidating because he obviously was very much a player manager being a player too,
just like Tori.
So that's something that they shared.
But Kirk Gibson would just tell you he's not going to tell you stuff where Tori just lies
and we'll be like, no, I'm the reason why he came out of the game.
I decided to pull him.
you know, Tori will protect his players in that way.
Kurt Gibson will tell you it's none of your damn business
while he pulled somebody out of a game.
There was also just a lot of like, again, I mean, like a player,
there's a lot of respect for someone like Kurt Gibson.
So it was hard.
It was hard to be around him after a loss, I feel like,
because of that, I guess that's the intensity part, right?
Like you and I have both been around a couple of pitchers,
maybe relievers here or there that were just way to,
um intense after like a loss and you just kind of sit there into scrum going i have no desire to ask you a
single question at this point because obviously we're catching them when things are very fresh they can be
very angry and uh yeah it felt like that with with kirk gibson at times uh he also just knew so much
about the game and that's something that again you can't really ever uh really equate for a manager
is how much, how well they know baseball and Gibby,
give me new baseball,
giving new baseball more than most of us will ever know in our lifetime.
So, but yeah,
odd,
I think,
I think it's,
it's interesting that around this time frame,
around the July 1st period of time seems to win that
Diamondbacks feel like they need to move on and make some changes in the season.
I'm not sure,
like you said,
this was a year with the Bob Brenley firing that it was a season where
they were on pace to win 50, 51 games.
So what does it even matter?
Are you really firing a manager in the middle of the season to have impact the team?
Are you trying to send a message?
I don't get it.
But it does seem like the Diamondbacks have some history of doing it here.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, I know a lot of people have been talking about Toro Lavello and his contract situation.
He's under contract through 2026.
We just did a mailbag episode on Snake's territory yesterday.
And of course, I imagine you've got.
in this question as well.
Like, is Tori Lavello going to survive that contract?
And I don't know about you, Derek, but I would be pretty much shocked if the Diamondbacks
let Tori go during this 2025 season, almost regardless of how it goes.
The team has had so many injuries and they're still in the thick of the race.
It's not like, you know, it's not like totally buried either not where they would probably
like to be, but they're not buried here in July.
So it'll be interesting to see how this, how.
this turns out. We know Mike Hazen and Toro Lavello certainly have a close relationship. And
Mike does not at all seem like the guy to me who would really point the finger at his manager
if things aren't going the way he wants. I think Mike is probably more likely to blame himself
if the Diamondbacks are not where they want to be. So that's just a little side note on the
situation we have going on right now. Yeah, that's great stuff. Well, we are going to talk about some
things going down in the farm system here on the other side of this break.

Well, I have a pool party to get to.
Damon has a pool party to get to.
We can't wait.
We're going to go do cannonballs, Jesse.
But before we get out of here, we do have to take a quick trip down to snake farm.
Our snake farm is getting a little depleted.
Hard to find as many snakes slithering around on the snake farm.
But we do have three guys here.
An interesting pickup here by the Diamondbacks.
Cubs legend Albert Almora was signed to a minor league contract and assigned to AAA Reno.
The move was announced, I believe, on June 27th, I would say.
I think that's the date or June 29th, one of those two dates.
But he's played four games for the Aces, hitting 375 in a very short, small sample size with a 563 slug.
He has a 412 on base percentage.
Then in regards to some other bodies here, Jesse, that Diamondbacks are going to be keeping an eye on for a little while,
is the backup option, I guess you could say, the depth piece for the Diamondbacks at first,
base. Tristan English, perhaps the first baseman of the future yet to be seen, but his offensive
numbers pretty good so far this year with the Reno Aces, batting 329 with a 518 slug. He has a 384
on base percentage and 53 RBIs. He has a 902 OPS, which is pretty great. And then last but
not least here, of course, Lou James Groover assigned to the futures game for the Arizona
Diamondbacks, hitting 307 for the Amarillo Sad Poodles. He has an 854 OPS, 10,000.
home runs this year and 37 RBI.
Two guys here, Jesse, that could be a big part of the future of this team.
And then Albert Almora, which is kind of interesting because the Diamondbacks seem to have
plenty of outfielders.
Yet that outfield depth is even being tested.
And now Albert Elmora is part of the Diamondbacks franchise here.
Yeah, I mean, Albert Almora definitely no stranger to the Diamondbacks organization.
He played 127 games in AAA.
for the debacks last year.
Of course, we saw him in spring training last season as well.
Didn't put up overly impressive numbers when this season was done.
He had an 89 WRC plus in AAA, so a little bit below average there.
This season wasn't particularly great for Miami playing in their, for their AAA team.
He had a 66 WRC plus.
But as you said, he's gotten off to a strong start since joining the Diamondbacks organization.
I imagine with Corbyn Carroll on the injured list,
the debacks just wanted to add,
add some outfield depth with Jake McCarthy
coming up to the big league.
So that certainly makes sense.
I also think it's worth noting with Tristan English
that the Diamondbacks just lost Trey Mancini to free agency
as he opted out of his deal with the team was hitting really,
really well in the month of June.
So yeah, Tristan English at this point,
I think is kind of your front line option.
should something happen to a Diamondback's first baseman,
or should they, you know, have any reason to make a move there?
And he has had a good season.
You saw earlier the batting average of 329 on the year.
Only seven home runs in 55 games.
He doesn't have maybe the power that you're used to seeing from a first baseman.
But, you know, he doesn't strike out much,
just a 14.2% strikeout rate in Reno this year.
And I think he's someone who probably deserves a shot.
So we'll see if he gets that opportunity at some point.
Interesting note there with Tray Mancini.
I was kind of waiting to see if there was any possibility.
Now, obviously, if this were to happen, it would be to add him to the major league roster.
But just seeing if there was any possibility where the Diamondbacks brought him back on a major league deal, like what they did with, I believe was Ilomar Vargas, who opted out of his deal and then came back shortly after.
But based on the way things are shaking up, it doesn't really look like that's the case.
no updates yet on Mancini, but it really feels like he opted out.
I just don't know where they would put him.
And I feel like, you know, if maybe if we didn't see Josh Naylor playing yesterday's game,
that that might have been a little bit more of an indicator that we might see perhaps an IL stint for Nailer.
And perhaps Mancini is the answer there as a backup first baseman or maybe just bring him up to play first base, right?
To split time there with Pavin.
But it doesn't appear that that's the case.
another honorable mention I wanted to just throw out there
19 year old J.D. Dix
made his debut with Vassalia Rahide.
He's three games into his career doing pretty good.
385 batting average 890 OPS,
two stolen bases already.
So again, a name that's very far off,
but a name that the Diamondbacks community could see
kind of raise up through the ranks within their system.
But Groover, again, Lou James Groover,
still I don't want to knock his given name but still just not as amazing of a baseball name as Gino Groover.
Definitely a guy that I feel like we're going to see in the future here on the big league club might be sooner than we know it depending on factors.
But again, he was elected to the futures game and just having himself a great season overall.
It's great to see a pick like him working out so well for this team.
It seems to be the case with most of their picks not named Drew Jones right now.
but Drew Jones has even seemed like he had himself a good day the other day
getting things back on track a little bit there in Hillsboro.
Groover is an interesting one.
I think he's had a really good season by and large.
I mean, last year was maybe not quite what you would have hoped to see from him.
He has struggled at times defensively.
It was a little bit unclear where he was going to ultimately slide in defensively.
but this is a guy that the diamondbacks really believe in from from a hitting standpoint.
The hit tool there is really impressive.
He doesn't strike out a whole lot.
He takes his walks as well.
And defensively, I haven't really seen it with my own eyes,
but defensively, the reports there are a lot more positive.
I think there's a real chance that Grover could be the successor at third base here for the diamondbacks at some point.
Of course, they also have Jordan Lawler in the mix there as well.
But yeah, this is an interesting, an interesting profile for sure.
He has a 126 WRC plus this year in AA.
And, you know, he's still still 23 years old.
So he's still on the younger side.
And I don't think he's all that far away from the majors at this point.
Can't wait.
Can't wait.
Well, can't wait to see out there, Jesse.
Can't wait to see all of you guys out there at Chase Field today.
Giants reporter, Jesse Friedman.
Giants, yeah.
Thank you, San Francisco Giants reporter, Jesse Friedman.
I mean, I think that was a big miss off the top of the show.
Yeah, I should have introduced him as that for sure.
We have to bring you in.
He doesn't even sit with us, you guys.
It's like seeing a player that traded, got traded or no, chose free agency, maybe
trade it away.
I don't know how you want to put it.
But it's like when Phillies players describe seeing one of their former teammates in a Mets jersey
and how it makes them sick.
Jesse's sitting over there with the Giants media away from me and Jack.
We sit there and text him and throw paper airplanes at him across the room.
And with the Giants series coming on up, we're bringing on Giants expert,
beat reporter Jesse Friedman.
He hates that. He hates that part.
But we love you. Thank you for coming on.
