Starting point is 00:00:00 Well, the Arizona Diamondbacks did manage to avoid the sweep in Boston winning the finale and giving us something to have some hope about. But this Cotell Marte situation continues to be a story and is now going on day four with new developments as Derek Hall called the situation a complete mystery. We are talking about all of this right now. Don't you go anywhere. Happy Thursday to you all. This is another edition of the PHNXD Backs podcast live from Studio K.
Starting point is 00:00:42 presented by our friends in circle k that's the most you're going to get out of me i was at icom i am your mayor occasionally known as derrick monta thrilled to have you guys here and thrilled to be talking about basketball not thrilled to still be talking about the contel marg day situation i am joined by you wonderful people but also another guy who's dragging ass this morning after he also went to a concert in downtown phoenix last night and got stuck in the rain just like all of us did it's your dog my dog and the DeBex dog, it's Damon dog. I'm not dragging anything, Derek. Rufus DeSoul saved music last night.
Starting point is 00:01:21 I was there to witness it live at Mortgage Matchup Center, and I had my triple shot of espresso this morning. I'm fired up. I'm ready to talk some DeBax baseball. My experience did not quite go so well, but that's life, right? Welcome in to the... And people say I'm just a negative hating individual. No, I'm just emotional, and I'm on either side of the feeling spectrum.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Right now, I'm living life. When we start talking about Catele-Morté, though, my vibes might go straight into the gutter. He's insufferable. It's exhausting to deal with him sometimes. I can see how that would be really exhausting. Well, this is the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast brought to you proudly by our friends at GameTime. Starting point is 00:02:09 And yes, as much as what we want to be talking about is the Diamondbacks win yesterday, or, you know, the wildcard race or injury updates or anything else, we can't. Because we have to once again go over this Cattel Marte situation. A completely unprecedented situation now in sports. And I just still can't wrap my mind around what is going on. But, you know, it is what it is. And I do have to ask that. Have we ever seen anything like this in any major sport ever?
Starting point is 00:02:51 It's crazy. And it kind of took a bizarre turn today because we have a quote from Diamondbacks president and CEO Derek Hall who appeared on Bickley and Marada and commented on the Cattel Marte situation, calling it still a complete mystery. It's just bizarre. And that's a very accurate way to put it, I think, Damon. I mean, it is bizarre. It is, I mean, it's shocking. It's shocking that the organization that Derek Hall is saying that the Cotel Marte situation is still a complete mystery. There's things we know.
Starting point is 00:03:39 There's things we don't know. And that's all we're at. We're still at a point where we still have no idea what's actually going on with Marte and what this personal matter is that extends beyond the knee injury that he was having the MRI done on. And for the most part, we're going to take everything at face value here. So I know there's people that believe that there's all sorts of shenanigans or, you know, you know, maybe, maybe lies being told or situation being manipulated. I do believe, yes, books journey. What books journey says here, I do believe that. He says the team knows less than the fans even apparently.
Starting point is 00:04:17 That's what at least feels like they're putting out there. I don't believe that in my heart. I think that they're just being careful with the information and they don't want to release it until perhaps they know how to wrap their mind around it. Maybe Cattell truly still has not informed them of what's going on. We know that Marte has a face-to-face meeting with Mike Hazen today, and we should have some more updates in regards to that, hopefully later today. but what we know and what many of you know is that Cotell Marte did not report to Fenway on Monday for game one of their series with the Boston Red Sox.
Starting point is 00:04:53 He did travel with the team to Boston. He was seen in the hotel bar the night before the team hotel bar at 11 p.m. He was placed on the restricted list. The debacks called it a personal matter. He does also have a left knee issue. He did come back to Phoenix from Boston. he is getting an MRI or should have gotten an MRI already. And then his agent says he wants to return as soon as possible.
Starting point is 00:05:24 Meanwhile, you have Mike Hazen and Tori Lovolo both making comments in regards to not knowing if Marte is even going to play again for the Diamondbacks this season. They remain hopeful he'll return this season. And the biggest factor here is that communication has been a problem. and I mean, I think that's what everybody kind of comes back to. No matter what this situation is, no matter if it's, no matter how personal, no matter how embarrassing, communication needs to be made with the team no matter what. It would be the same here.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Derek Montia would not be hosting this show anymore if he just decided to abandon post and not give one Greg Esposito a courtesy of a phone call to let him know what was going on in my life. Right. And I think every single person watching the show that is employed could say the same thing about their jobs. I saw one person saying like if you were a top performer at your company and you've been there consistently for years and delivered, they probably wouldn't have fire you right away for a no call, no show. That's fair to say. And Catelle Marte is far too important to this team for any of those DFA rumors to be coming up or anything in regards to could tell no longer being a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. What we don't
Starting point is 00:06:54 know is what the personal matter actually is. Why Marte wasn't able to report to Fenway on Monday and why he had to leave Boston to come back to Phoenix. Even though they say it's for an MRI, that would track with a personal family issue that could tell needed to come back and handle in person and not in a city on the other side of the country. We don't know why he didn't communicate directly with the organization. You can only speculate. My best speculation seems to be that it, like when you eliminate everything, when we're told that everybody in Ketel's family is fine,
Starting point is 00:07:32 that his well-being is fine. We don't know about his mental state or we don't know about, but he's physically okay. Like he didn't get in an accident. He's not actually missing. There's not something, you know, we know his knee is a problem, but we know nothing else, right? So when you start eliminating things, you know, again, it feels like what would be the reason why he would not share this information with the organization?
Starting point is 00:07:56 For me, personally, it comes down to it being something you wouldn't want to share with people. And you can speculate on your own, on whatever that is. But he didn't communicate with the organization. And, of course, the other thing that obviously people have questioned is why the MRI couldn't be done in Boston. I think that that makes sense, right? Not only was he not going to play in that series, so you might as well send him home, but if he is dealing with a personal matter, I'm sure he wanted to come home to deal with it and not do it on the other side of the country. We don't know how serious his knee problem is. We don't know the results of the MRI, and we don't
Starting point is 00:08:30 know when he'll return. We also don't know if the Diamondbacks are going to impose any internal discipline on Marte. We don't know if once he's back, if they're going to suspend him. I would be shocked if they didn't. They seem upset. Yeah, I don't think that this type of, you can't just let it slide or let it go under the table with no repercussions. Like then you're, you're basically sending the message to the rest of your team that this is something that is okay, I guess. And it's really not. It's definitely not.
Starting point is 00:09:00 I don't think that that's the message being sent. I don't think that's confusing to players. I don't think that's confusing to anybody. I know this is a, this is an embarrassment for the, Diamondbacks organization. It absolutely is. Oh, yeah. But this isn't on them.
Starting point is 00:09:18 This isn't their fault. This is unprecedented. Like I said earlier, this, we've never even dealt with this. We've never even seen this where a player, like, I mean, this is, as some people were making a comparison, this almost feels like an Anthony Rendon situation. And God, let's hope it's not that. Catelle's a lot better than Anthony Rendon. But doesn't, Catell doesn't give me the vibes of someone that doesn't like.
Starting point is 00:09:44 like playing baseball. No. He just, I think there's just something going on here that's much deeper than baseball. I agree with that. I agree with that. And I also think that. I feel like Intel loves baseball. And I, you, you said it earlier when we were discussing it. He loves playing for Arizona. Yeah. He was crying when he got the no trade. That might be lip service for some players, but it's hard to muster up that kind of emotion when you're talking about it and saying things like he's from Arizona and he's a diamond back and he wants to be a diamond back for the rest of his career. and all the things that he said, he said, I don't feel like that suddenly shifted
Starting point is 00:10:19 because Tori Lavallo doesn't want him to hit in the one or two hole anymore. Like, I don't think that that's what's happening here. I saw some reports. I saw an Instagram, you know, video from a Spanish-speaking reporter that didn't, based on the replies to him, Spanish-speaking fans didn't seem to respect much think that he actually was somebody that could be trusted here. As, you know, who am I to throw stones when living in that glass house, right?
Starting point is 00:10:50 But what I will say is that the suggestion was that Marte has a problem with the organization and he's done playing for the Diamondbacks and all this other stuff. We also saw another, like, graphic come out that said that he had been DFAed. People are insane, right? People are crazy where they're just trying to muster up, like, Photoshop things and AI stuff to make it look like I can tell Marte actually. is like that the situation is different than what it is. But that's the internet these days.
Starting point is 00:11:16 I can't even tell you how many fake movie, like movie announcements I sent to my friends during that Disney D23 thing. I was like, oh, they're making Midnight Sons. And my friends are like, no, you idiot. That's a fake. And I was like, what about Timothy Chalabay playing? Oh, Tony Stark.
Starting point is 00:11:32 They were like, no, you're a dummy, right? I don't know why people make fake stuff on the internet just to fool people like me, but I appreciated if they stopped fooling us boomers. Oh, I don't fall in that category, by the way. Don't start doing that to me yet. Okay, Derek. But again, could tell the person, right, whatever the personal matter is here, that's private and can be.
Starting point is 00:11:56 It can be to us. Got to share something with the organization. For sure. You know, and they do appear to be trying to give him room to deal with that in space. I think that's why we're not having, you know, these updates come more often. I think that's why, you know, you hear what you heard from Derek Hall. They're trying to let him resolve this and come back to a point where he's ready to play baseball again. But that's the fact that this is a personal matter something fans should respect.
Starting point is 00:12:27 I even feel gross continuing to talk about it or continuing to speculate on it. And Biggs is right. We shouldn't speculate, nor have too many of our opinions, too many opinions what's going on until we know what's going on. And we might never know what's going on, right? But when it comes to Cotel Marte the person, that's this side. There's Cotel Marte, the employee. And I hate to ever call baseball players that. But we're all employees of someone, right?
Starting point is 00:12:55 And really, when it comes down to it, there's a legitimate baseball question there to be asked. If you're under contract traveling with the team and expected to play in a crucial game down the stretch to get your team into the playoffs, there's an expectation that you communicate with your employer. That's not even groundbreaking news. That's not Derek being a smart, big-brained guy. That is like the most basic, basic thing that you can take away from this situation. That seems to be what's frustrated at the Diamondbacks the most. That's why Mike Hazen's meeting today with Cateal is crucial and could be so important to his future with his team.
Starting point is 00:13:32 It's not necessarily about punishing him. It's about answering what happened. Why did it happen? why did you feel like Tori and the organization couldn't help or be there for you right we need them despite everything going on martay is a major part of Arizona's offense and i know he struggled this year through 118 games he was hitting 249 he had 21 home run 67 rbi i like the biggest question my jason needs to be asking is how do we move forward right where do we go from here with our three-time All-Star that still remains one of the most talented players on the roster
Starting point is 00:14:18 and in baseball. It's upsetting, man. It really is. We're already dealing with so much this year. Injuries, inconsistent play, the starting rotation being like one of the best in baseball and then also looking like one of the worst in three games against the Boston Red Sox. And now our best offensive player has suddenly become available and we have no timetable or knowledge about his return. You know, it's one thing for us as fans to be going through this, but there's a whole other level of the humanity side of things for people that know could tell,
Starting point is 00:14:53 that have seen, you know, him be a joy to be around at times in the clubhouse and a guy that plays this game with such childlike wonder that it's just amazing to watch. So this sucks. And again, it's not, it's hard not to think that, this is going to impact everything that the team has going on between now and September 29th. I think you would be naive to think that could tell Marte missing is not going to have a huge impact on this team. Not just his 249 batting average and his 67 RBI and his 21 home runs,
Starting point is 00:15:28 but the lasting impact that it could have on the team if he does not play again this season. And it also sucks that we have to continue to wonder when guys are going to, be back, whether it's injury setbacks, whether it's guys like AJ Puck who should have been in the bullpen already and now instead have been shut down for the year and may never, probably will never wear a Diamondbacks jersey ever again, or Corbin Burns and what, you know, what the impact he's going to have on this team when he returns and if he returns and when he returns. But the Catele-Marté situation has just made this season so much more complicated and so much more difficult to navigate and get through to that promise land that is
Starting point is 00:16:14 the postseason it sucks man it's just another distraction that's unwanted unneeded you know like this team certainly doesn't need that right now and they've put a lot of trust in kattel with the contract they've given him regardless of you know i think some people want to like turn this into like a debacks or like have done wrong by kutel situation which i think i've seen that where people are saying the front office is treated Ketel poorly. Look, I know the trade stuff probably doesn't help any player, but that's part of the business, man. There's certain things about this sport where you have to be an adult.
Starting point is 00:16:49 You have to be a grown-up about the fact of the matter of the business. It's part of the business, right? More importantly, your value was so high that no matter what teams were throwing at the Diamondbacks, Mike Hazen was like, now. It wasn't good enough. Yeah, because this team, this team wants you and they value you and they prove that. However, they knew about the 10 to 5 rights, but they still were like, we're going to hold on to them unless we get value we think is
Starting point is 00:17:15 appropriate for a superstar. I'll also say this. When we were talking about Cotel missing time last year, right, or just in general, the attitude towards Cotel when the trade, you know, thing came along, like Damon and I have been staunchly in his corner. And I feel like we still are. You know, but this definitely makes us have some, you know, I guess I don't want to say regrets about backing him up because he deserved to be back up. But I guess this, we were putting things together as like the trade rumors were a logical connection between his value, his 10 and 5 rights coming up, and the fact that the Diamondbacks could theoretically get a haul for him. However, now more is coming out even about the time that he missed last year after the All-Star break, especially more about the lack of communication just like this incident. So you could see how internally there was far more reason that they might have wanted to move on from Cattel Marte.
Starting point is 00:18:22 They might have wanted to try to avoid something like this that is happening right now occurring. And that could have been the reason why they felt like. it was a good time to at least try to see what they could get for him. His value was potentially at the highest that it ever could be. I don't know, man. Marte is just so important to this team. He really is. And I know that they can do it without him,
Starting point is 00:18:45 but I don't know if they can do it without the distraction that is the Marte's situation. I think that they can make playoffs without him if things break right, but they can't win in the playoffs without him, in my opinion. And Book's journey is right. The thing that we need, Damon, more than ever, anything is we need another Cotel Marte walk off and bat flip. I mean,
Starting point is 00:19:06 like, it makes you appreciate the ones that we had when they went down this season a little bit more, right? Took my shirt off after one of them. No, actually, I took my shirt off before it happened. My shirt was off when it occurred,
Starting point is 00:19:19 though. Correct. And then I made 6,000 new brothers up there in the tarps offside. 6,000. That might be a little bit high of an estimate. You have a lot of risk. for devacination. Hey, I love these guys, man. Anyway, that's where we're at and we'll bring you more updates as things progress and hopefully we get some positive updates for sure. But AZ cards
Starting point is 00:19:43 nerd says the thing 100% that everybody should keep in mind here. Mental health isn't something to be taken lightly. Period. It's not. And I can attest to that myself. My mental health isn't always great. And it's hard. It's hard sometimes, especially when in the context of what Damon and I do. You got to kind of just got to put on a brave face and go out there and do your job sometimes. And that's very difficult when you have anything going on in your life that might be causing you, you know, an internal struggle, whether it's mental health, whether it's something that's family related. But yeah, I mean, Corey also makes a good point. He would get so much support if a statement was released that it was mental health related or just in general a statement
Starting point is 00:20:33 or just tell the team and just in the team can just say you know what we're comfortable with what katel has going on right now yes and uh it doesn't need to be public information but we've spoken with them and yes things are fine we're going to keep that internally it's it's a personal matter that we are aware of now but again yeah that's that's it we're going to be here to support kutel and again everything can kind of go away with with that kind of message for sure but We're going to take a quick break. And on the other side of this break, we are going to preview the upcoming series
Starting point is 00:21:02 with the Cincinnati Reds, a team that hopefully the Diamondbacks can stack some wins against and get back on track. Don't you go anywhere. You are watching the PH and next Diamondback show. Well, football season is about to kick off and you know what that means.
Starting point is 00:21:18 It's fantasy football season. That's all football season is to me. It's fantasy football season. I'm a Cardinals fan, though. So I don't look forward to things like wins or the postseason or anything like that when it comes to that sport. But I do very much
Starting point is 00:21:30 look forward to our fantasy football draft that we are going to be having at Heel of Rivers and Casinos. And guess what? That is not an exclusive thing. You too can have your fantasy football draft held at the wonderful Heel of River Resorts and Casinos locations. And again, what better place to do it at, right? Packages are available for 8 to 12 people. I just saw them in Lawrence office. That's such a cool package that you get. You get a draft board. You get player stickers. You get the official PHNX Cardinals diehard draft kit, championship ribbon, commissioner crown, even comes with a Sharpie, a draft sharpie. We're covering everything for you. And it comes with sticker sheets.
Starting point is 00:22:11 Plus, you'll also get food and beverage options over there at the Healer Rivers Cascinos and a reserve space in the BetMGM Sportsbook, where there's literally no better place to do your draft. Guests can visit play atheela.com or the BetMGM Sportsbook at Wild Horse Pass of Akiba or Santan Mountain for more details. And we'll have that link in our show notes as well. So grab your crew, celebrate your big wins over them, and enjoy everything. Heal of River Resorts and Casinos has to offer. Heal of River Resorts and Casinos, all the ways you do you.
Starting point is 00:22:41 Visit play atheela.com for more details. And financial success begins with the right institution and the right account. And that institution is Mountain America Credit Union with their one and only My Style Checking account. They're designed around exceptional member service. checking is more than a box of dusty old checks. It's more than keeping your money in between your mattresses. And that's not ever a good idea because I'll find it there for sure.
Starting point is 00:23:06 But it's the ultimate spending account over at Mountain America Credit Union. It's how we get things done. It's how we pay for all of these concerts. It's how Derek has taken a cruise in the first week of October because that's how little life will lead. It's how we get things done. It's the ultimate spending account. Whatever makes your life worthwhile, Mountain America's My Style Checking account is right there
Starting point is 00:23:26 with you and it even comes with rewarding perks such as loan discounts discounts on travel discounts on events and so much more and they also offer free financial guidance so with so many possibilities how will you use my style apply for your my style checking account at any mountain america branch or macu.com slash my style insured by ncua membership required based on eligibility some benefits require no cost registration activation terms conditions and exclusions do apply uh book's journey makes a makes a good point here. Book's Journey says, typically a statement about someone dealing in mental health issues come out after the individual
Starting point is 00:24:03 has received treatment, therapy, not before. And there's also, yeah, HIPAA violations and all sorts of other stuff that goes on there too when it comes to your rights, his rights, and everything in regards to privacy when it comes to these kind of matters, depending on if it's something he's sharing with a professional or even a medical thing that he's going through.
Starting point is 00:24:24 But again, it's right now it's really about communicating that effectively with the team and the team letting us at least know they are satisfied with, you know, the explanation, right? That is one weird thing about this Marte's situation is it does seem to be developing in the media in a way where it's like they're trying to talk to Ketel or send a message through the media. And I don't know if that's right now the way to handle it. It's surprising, too. I said that yesterday, but They usually do a good job of handling this type of stuff in-house without providing too many details, but saying enough, where it feels like it would be far less concerning than this situation is. Having Derek Hall say just today that this is still a complete mystery and calling it bizarre doesn't help.
Starting point is 00:25:18 It doesn't help confidence at least as far as that, you know, that this is going to be resolved sometime soon. it would be great to see Cateel Marte suit up for the Diamondbacks in this series at home against the Cincinnati Reds. I'm very skeptical that that's going to happen. But I remain cautiously, not optimistic, but I mean, that feels far-fetched, unfortunately. Cautiously hopeful. Especially considering they literally won't even say if he's going to play again this season right now. Yeah, I know. we hopefully we'll get a lot in regards to, you know, some clarity after Mike Hazen has a chance
Starting point is 00:26:00 to meet with Ketel. But the one message that they keep sending is Tori and Haysen both have to focus on the 26-man roster that is on the field playing baseball games. That is what matters right now the most for this organization besides Ketel's well-being. But those two things need to kind of be compartmentalized and put into two different areas, right? Right now they can't let this team continue to be impacted on the field by by this, right? Luckily, they have a day off today. Hopefully they can all get some rest and reset a little bit before taking on the Reds tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:26:35 But let's take a look here at the Cincinnati Reds at a glance and how they match up with the Diamondbacks this season. Of course, the Reds, they kind of stink. They kind of stink a little bit. And they also kind of like checked out on the season at the trade deadline. We saw them moving not a. a ton of their best players, but they were definitely involved in a lot of trade rumors, and they definitely were somewhat of sellers rather than being buyers.
Starting point is 00:27:03 Diamondbacks right now sit at 607. They were trying to sell off Hunter Green at the deadline. And I wanted him. I know. I really wanted him. Give me Hunter Green. Diamondbacks are 67 and 61. Reds are 61 and 66 this year.
Starting point is 00:27:15 They have a minus 88 run differential, and they are 5 and 5 in their last 10 games. They have a team. OPS of 694, which is 26th in baseball, or tied for 25th. They have a starting ERA of 4.42, which is 22nd, and a bullpen ERA of 4.57, which is 25th. Their overall team ERA sits at 4.48, which is 24th best in MLB, and they have four outs above average, which is 15th in baseball. Meanwhile, you look on the Diamondbacks side of things, and things are trending in the right direction, Damon. The OPS is getting back to league average. The ERA, getting back to league average, right?
Starting point is 00:27:59 Well, the ERA just took a hit because we were 14th. We were 14th. Before the Red Sox series. And we got clobber. It was about 408 and 14th before the Red Sox series. It's now we added a whole 10th of a decimal place and dropped four spots there. So a little bit of a downward trend, but the OPS continues to like gradually rise up just tick by tick. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:23 the debacks do lead the season series two to one against the reds. And they're sitting around, obviously, that wildcard spot while Cincinnati being further back means that we need to take advantage of this matchup rather than let the reds hang around, right? This could be the nail in the coffin if the Diamondbacks could find a way to not only win this series, but perhaps find a way to put together a sweep. And their offense can still be dangerous because of its athleticism, its speed, its ability to, you know, create that same kind of chaos on the basis that the Diamondbacks have been over, been able to. But they're not an overwhelming offensive club. And again, they're really, their biggest weakness is they're pitching. This is where the debacks have the advantage, the debacks rotation, just more established, doing better. And again,
Starting point is 00:29:11 when we look at the pitching matchups, we do have Mitch Brack going in the finale, but you feel pretty good about having Erod and Michael Soroka going in there for games one and two. The DeVak's biggest concern is their offensive inconsistency that we saw in Boston and continue to see throughout this season. Meanwhile, they did. I mean, you could say that they kind of came back online and even in game two of the Red Sox series. But I mean, it feels like we've done this all season. So I hate to like continue to just like. Yeah, we're not going to be like this.
Starting point is 00:29:37 It's over. It's bad. We're back. It's over. Because I actually don't hate to do that. But it's your favorite thing. Yeah. What the hell are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:29:44 I do. I do think that this is a must win series, though. When you look at the pitching matchups and you, you know, we just looked at the Reds team and like what what like these guys are just straight up not very good they they're not very good at hitting they're not very good at pitching they're okay at defense the D-backs are better at them at every facet of the game this season and you have to take advantage of that especially when you have Erod and Soroka on the mound against Nick Ladolo and in Red Louder yeah Red Louder and I think Red Louder worked us when he
Starting point is 00:30:15 pitched against us earlier this season if I'm not mistaken I think that was the one because they the dimebacks did lose one of of the three games and I think it was the Louder start. Yeah, 4.52 ERA for Nick Ladolo. Louder has a 5.17 ERA and Andrew Abbott has a 4.07 ERA. Meanwhile, we got Erod, Michael Seroca and Mitch Brett. The loss to the Reds was a 2-1 loss and Rhett Louder went five and two-thirds, one earned run, six strikeouts. Gross. Yeah, it was probably his best start of the season. And one of those days where the Diamondbacks offense was just absolutely terrible. Correct. And And that's what I think we're worried about right now because the debacks have these lulls where, you know, they're going against a pitcher that they have no business, like not lighting up and then make him look like a superstar for one game a season.
Starting point is 00:31:03 And Rhett Louder was that guy earlier in the first half of the season, can't let him do it again to you and beat you for two consecutive games when you have Mike Soroka on the mound too who's like been fantastic all year long. look at these two sub three ERAs for two of our starting pictures. I mean, it's really, really attractive. I don't know the last time I've seen that. I've looked at this for five hours. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:26 That's why I've kept it on screen. It's because it's just, it's making me feel something. Well, again, this is the advantage, as you can see here. Mitch Bratt,
Starting point is 00:31:36 how many more starts you think Brad has left in him in the starting rotation? Maybe two more after this? I mean, it depends on when we can get Corbyn Burns back, right? Well, I mean, September is 11 days away, right? So theoretically, Mitch Bratt will start on Sunday. He would get another start five to six days from that day, depending on, I think there is an
Starting point is 00:31:59 off date that following week. No, I don't think there is because they have the four game series with the Giants. So if he starts on Sunday, there's a good chance he'll be back on the mound on Monday, which would be in September. And then the following start after that would be somewhere around September. 8th. So I don't know, man. I feel like if Corman Burns is going to return this season, he needs to get back around that time, around the 10th of September, so that he could get theoretically three starts in before we hit the postseason and can get himself acclimated to
Starting point is 00:32:36 back being back and pitching against Major League hitting. So Ernesto says Burns coming back at all would be a surprise, to be honest, I don't take that stance. I feel like the diamondbacks have been too transparent about getting him stretched out and getting him ready for him to not come back. However, who knows? Setbacks could happen and you never know. With such a little amount of time between now and the end of the regular season, any setback would probably remove him from potentially returning. So let's hope that doesn't happen. Knock on some wood here on this table. But Again, Diamondbacks, what they really need, what they really need is Corbyn, Carole, Gabrielle, Marino,
Starting point is 00:33:21 and Nolan Aronado to carry this team in this series against the Reds. They need their leaders. They need Geraldo Perdomo and Carol and Moreno to be their big three. They need Moreno, who has been better than Cattel this season anyway when it comes to his offense to step up not only in his performance, but they need those three guys to step up as a leader. for the rest of this team right now. And if they can get those guys producing,
Starting point is 00:33:50 I think the debacks are, they win the series. The pitching should be able to handle the Reds, but the offense needs to get going. Anyway, that's all we got for our preview of the Reds. That series starts tomorrow. The boys get the day off today. And like I said earlier, I hope this is a chance considering how stressful.
Starting point is 00:34:11 This time has been for them, how difficult the schedule has been, without with very few off days on it and now again the weight of this marty situation and you know their hearts and minds kind of being possibly with their with their teammate um at least thinking about them uh is is not you know it is something that they could definitely use a day off for right now but we're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break we're going to do what we do around here every thursday we're going to take a little trip down memory lane and then once we drive down memory lane we're going to take a right and hit the freeway and then
Starting point is 00:34:44 drive down south to the snake farm. We're going to do all of that when we come back. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PH&X Diamond Back Show. Well, big shout out to Circle K. Always. Circle K is, it gives me life, literally. Circle K is a life provider to me.

Starting point is 00:37:30 and tell them pH and Xench. All right, well, it's time again, Damon. I know we have a lot going on and I know it's hard to like focus on the fun, joys in life right now, considering what's going on with Marte? This is Derek's favorite thing to do. I mean, we got, you got to do it. You got to do it. You don't, though. You don't have to do it. You do have to do it. You do have to find small joys in life that can make you happy, Damon. What's the point of living life just to sit around and be angry and upset about Cotel Marte all the time? When we're on day four of hashtag Cotel watch and we still have no answers. No. Yeah, I'm going to sit there and lament and figure, go, what the answer? is going on with Catel Marseille.
Starting point is 00:38:16 Am I supposed to sit here and stare at a wall and wait for answers to come? Yeah, live stream of the day. Derek's going to live stream until we figure out what's going on with Catel Marte. No, no, absolutely not. I will not do that. You guys are going to like watch him like sleep at night and he's going to be out there on the recliners. It's going to be good content. You're going to see me stare at my computer and then when an update and guzz come through,
Starting point is 00:38:39 you're going to know it's bad because I'm going to go like this. That actually would be pretty election. God. God. God. Are you kidding me? You got to be kidding me. That'd be pretty electric content, Derek.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Just literally I'm streaming until Catelle Marte is back on the debacks. I refuse to stop making content until Catele Cate returns to my baseball team. Well, for the time being, I am going to try to spread some joy and make you guys happy. I hate you. And talk about something other than Cotel Marte. Damon, make these colors prettier. Thank you. That's, see, I'm already better.
Starting point is 00:39:13 I already feel better. And you're right, maybe I shouldn't feel better. But anyway, throwback Thursday, we got the copper, we got the purple, we got the teal. And most importantly, we have Randy Johnson to once again talk about because on August 23rd, 2001, Randy Johnson became the first pitcher in MLB history to record four consecutive 300 plus strikeout seasons. Wrap your mind around that. I know we do this a lot with Kattel because we're just like, whatever, or not Ketka, Excuse me with Randy because Randy's Randy, right?
Starting point is 00:39:49 So it's like right now. Even you can't stop thinking about Katel. You're right. I can't. Can we just go back? Can I take the colors off and we just go back to talking about Katel? No, leave the colors up and we're not going to talk about him anymore. But Jacob Mizorowski, who's a phenom in baseball this year, Damon. Phenom has 210 strikeouts this year.
Starting point is 00:40:06 He leads all of MLB by nearly 10 strikeouts. And there is not a chance that Jacob Mizorowski is going to sniff 300. strikeouts. Maybe a little chance, but not really. And Randy Johnson's just casually striking out 300 batters for four consecutive seasons in a row. Oh, God, I miss that man so much. And I don't mean miss him like physically because I see him all the time. He's at Chase Field all the time. I just mean I miss him with the long hair with the mullet on my baseball team. Mowing down batters and causing fear across the league. Oh, take me back.
Starting point is 00:40:49 Take me back. But that's what we do here on throwback Thursday. We take it back. And on this August 25th, 2004, we had the D-backs losing the shortest nine-inning game in club history. The Diamondbacks played a game where they lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh. And it was a franchise record one hour and 47-minute game. It was the shortest nine-ending game. by seven minutes.
Starting point is 00:41:17 And the thing, the fascinating part about that is, I feel like we have two hour games all the time now. Like, I don't even feel like it's that big of an occurrence to even have a sub two hour game. Like, don't get me wrong. I'm going to fist pump when we have a sub two hour game,
Starting point is 00:41:30 period. I don't care if the Diamondbacks want to lose, one or lost. I'm, I'm, let's go. Right? But yeah,
Starting point is 00:41:39 no, that was something that was definitely a rare occurrence back in 2004, without the pitch clock and everything else. In 2007, August 22nd, 2007, Brandon Webb's scoreless streak ended at 42 innings when Prince Fielder from the Brewers hit an RBI single in the first inning. It's the 12th longest streak in history, and it was surpassed by Zach Gallin's 44 and a third inning streak, which is the longest in franchise history. And that passed the Brandon Webb Street.
Starting point is 00:42:13 On August 22nd, same day, but a different year. 2009. The debaq streak of plate appearances, get this, without a walk ended at 153. I'm going to say that one more time. The debaq streak of a plate appearances without a walk ended Damon at 153 plate appearances consecutively without a single debacks bad or walking. Wow. Sounds like this year's team at times, doesn't it? I mean, that's like a, I mean, that feels like a philosophy of like, boys, we're first pitch hunting. We're first pitch strike hunting up here because a lot of times the first
Starting point is 00:42:50 strike you get is the best pitch to hit that you'll get an entire AB. Sometimes that can lead to higher averages, but it probably overall leads to worse offensive statistics as a whole. Yeah. And I think baseball has discovered that as the math has gotten smarter over the years. Whereas like back then like, you know, like average was so much more important. Oh yeah. So like they probably were like, whoa, when we swing at the first pitch, we hit like 350.
Starting point is 00:43:15 Yeah. And then nowadays they're like, don't swing at the first pitch. Don't ever do that. Don't ever do that. That streak ran from August 17 through August 26, the longest streak in franchise history, and the fifth longest streak in baseball since 1998. Detroit had a streak of 183 appearances without a walk from September 4th through September 9th, 2002. But the Debex streak of played appearances without a walk ended in the funniest possible way, Damon.
Starting point is 00:43:43 So 2009 Debex. who do you think is the person that drew the walk to end the streak? Give me a guess. What year? 2009. 2009? Who is the player that ended the streak of not having a walk with play a period? Man, you're laughing.
Starting point is 00:44:02 So I think it's got to be someone funny. I'm going to guess like Dan Heron. You're close. It is kind of funny like that. It's Mark Reynolds. Oh, nice. I was going to go with like Adam Dunn or Chris Young. Like one of the guys that strikes.
Starting point is 00:44:13 It should have been Mark Reynolds. Yeah. I just wanted to strikeout king. Of course it was the strikeout king. The whole run strikeout king that drew the walk in the fifth inning to end that streak. And one other important date
Starting point is 00:44:24 that we missed back last time we were doing this, which is August 14th, 2021. Pitcher Tyler Gilbert threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres in his first ever major league start becoming just the fourth pitcher in MLB history to achieve the feat in a debut.
Starting point is 00:44:46 And we all know what, kind of legend, pitching legend Tyler Gilbert became for this organization. Am I right? Yeah, well, that's why baseball is so funny and stupid at times. But that is what happened on this week in MLB Diamondbacks history.
Starting point is 00:45:03 And again, we appreciate you guys so much. But Cool, bro is being the bearer of bad news in some way, but I don't know what he's talking about. But anyway, we'll get to that. I think he might be talking about Catelle Marte liking that post, I'd still like to see that. All I saw was a, you know, whatever. It looked like a Photoshop screenshot. No, it's Ilya's leaving WWE. Oh my God. No, we cool, bro. We need to talk about this off air. We're going to, we're going to sidebar that one because you and me need to
Starting point is 00:45:35 have a lengthy conversation about the fact that we're never going to see Gunther versus Ilya in the WWE on the main roster. Get out of here. But we're going to take a quick break. On the other side of this break, we have some young, exciting prospects to talk about. on another edition of Snake Farm. And we're going to do that after these words from our sponsor. Don't you go anywhere? You're watching the PHNX Diamondback Show. Well, you know, I love Pure Edibles.

Starting point is 00:48:42 where 10 runs were scored combined between the two teams in the ninth inning alone. Who won? The Cardinals, unfortunately. So the Reds were up five to four, then the Cardinals scored six in the top of the ninth, and the top of the ninth, and the top of the ninth, and the last by one.
Starting point is 00:49:03 Well, let's hope that causes them just to give up, right? Let's hope they're like, look, we can't even come back when we come back and score a bunch of runs in the bottom of the inning or in the night. So let's just wrap this season up. But speaking of tickets, speaking of wrapping things up,
Starting point is 00:49:18 speaking of events, you can join me, Damon and your fellow Ph.NX diehards for a D-Backs takeover of Chase Field presented by Circle K coming up next week, August 25th versus the Cubs. Starting point is 00:49:57 we need to take a little trip down to the snake farm to see how some of our favorite prospects are doing. And when I say favorite prospects, I mean my favorite prospect, Gavin Conticello, that I feel like doesn't get enough love when the Diamondbacks' top prospects get brought up. But there's a couple of other guys that have been absolutely killing it in this organization.
Starting point is 00:50:19 And, I mean, again, we talked recently, about the changes to the top 30 prospects list for the Diamondbacks. We're seeing some names kind of move up that list. And those names are, you know, some of those names came from those trades that Mike Hazen pulled off at the trade deadline last year. It just goes to show how valuable making that move, making those moves were for this team, including one David Hagamon now being in the top five, the Diamondbacks prospects. This man is killing it for the AA Amarillo Sod Poodle. he has three in three starts he has a 1.65 ERA a 1.163 whip and 12.1 strikeouts per nine
Starting point is 00:51:01 Damon wow wow and Hagenman again he was he didn't even seem like when the diamondbacks made that trade with the rangers did not seem like the centerpiece of that trade Cole Drake seemed to be the centerpiece of that trade Mitch Bratt even felt like he was far more prominent than David Hageman. And don't get me wrong. Mitch Bratt right now is in the major league starting rotation, and Cole Drake was in the major league starting rotation. But the most valuable pitcher that might have been part of that trade is David Hageman.
Starting point is 00:51:36 Yeah, I certainly think that's the truth. I mean, he's right now he is slated to be at a major league level by next year. And again, you could start to see how big that Merrill Kelly trade. was for this team, there's a good chance that if 2027, if baseball happens in 27, we'll have two of those guys potentially, maybe even three in our starting rotation. Let's hope that's not the case because that means things might have gone really bad for this team. But just saying overall, maybe let's say by 2028, all three guys could theoretically be in the deback starting rotation. And if that's the case, we're going to look
Starting point is 00:52:16 back on that trade with the Rangers for a very long time as far as the impact that it's had. on the organization, you know. But you also had a couple of other guys, like I said, on that snake farm list as well. Outfielder Gavin Conticello can't say enough about how he continues to just succeed at whatever level he is at. He's got a batting average of 293, he's got six home runs with the AAA Reno Aces, 17 RBI, and a 906 OPS. And another guy who, again, kind of cruised up the Diamondback's top prospect. ranking and took that fifth overall spot with the latest prospect ranking is catcher Carlos Vera Honda who right now for high A Hillsborough has not played a ton of games but man hitting
Starting point is 00:53:02 292 with a 953 OPS 25 RBI and seven home runs I think he's legit and I mean he was recently the diamondbacks minor league pitcher of the of the month or excuse me a position player of the month and for good reason. So again, these are some exciting youngsters and some names to remember because I wouldn't be surprised to see these guys at a major league level, or at least maybe two of them at a major league level
Starting point is 00:53:33 as soon as possibly next year. And Jason's right, man. Vera Honda as a name just goes incredibly hard. Vera Honda! I'm not even doing it at justice, but you get it. You get where I'm going with that one, Damon. I mean, can you imagine that home run call. Oh, it's going to be electric as long as it. I'm not going to say it. Yeah. It's implied.
Starting point is 00:53:56 We all know what. We're all thinking the same thing. We are. So that's that's that. But anyway, we got some super chats. Appreciate you guys. Love you. Thank you so much for the super chats. Robert Calamari says Roberto. Roberto. Sorry, Roberto Calamari says get this bomb off the team. Yeah. I think he's lost a lot of a lot of goodwill with Diamondbacks fans throughout this process, Derek. Like, you know, like this is a situation where, and we were talking about this when we were, you know, when this morning, he, he was a guy that was like, he fully had all the fans on his side when he got that no trade clause and he's crying. And, you know, I think a lot of the people that were upset about last year's situation were ready to move on and forgive him and, you know, really like,
Starting point is 00:54:42 just like turn the next page in this, in the, they could tell Marte's story. and this is just a disaster. Like you've lost a lot of people that were fully in your corner and now probably just see you as completely unreliable. And I think it's hard to really argue with those people right now. Yeah. No, you're right. That's fair to say.
Starting point is 00:55:01 It's hard to argue with those people. And as a fan, we've tried to say the things that we've said, right? We've said try to keep an open mind. Let's wait until the truth comes out. Let's wait until the full, not the truth, but the full story comes out. And we know everything. right. But that doesn't change the fact that, you know, you are contracted as a player to play for a team because they need you, right? And I mean, right now it feels like overall this, this is a time where the Diamondbacks needed Cattel the most. So when fans or even people within the organization are upset with Cattel, it is understandable. It is understandable. You have, you know, a responsibility to do this stuff, right?
Starting point is 00:55:51 So, like, I just feel... I do think that there's, like, even a little bit of a responsibility towards the fans, yeah. You know, where the people that pay for your jerseys that want to go watch you play at the ballpark that love Citeu. Like, Derek, you have a Cotel Marte jersey. There's two of them. You got two. I got a regular black one and I also have his, you know, All-Star one from Texas. He's been, you know, one of my favorite.
Starting point is 00:56:16 players since he got called up back in like what was that 2017 no doubt about it I could ask that all the time people always like who's your favorite player on the team I'm like Catelle more than yeah you I know he's your favorite player and it that's where it's like it's like come on Catell like I I know that you're probably going through something pretty serious right now otherwise I don't think that this would have blown up in the way that it has but you know like I I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that you know he he's fully committed for four hours a day playing a baseball game that can get your mind off of maybe something more serious. And then you can go deal with whatever you need to deal with in the time that isn't
Starting point is 00:56:51 playing baseball. But you have almost an obligation to the fans to your manager, your GM, your teammates, mostly your teammates, as we were talking about on this show. Like, I think me and you are very team-oriented people. And we would feel like we were letting down our coworkers if something like this was to happen. Derek, if you didn't show up for work and then I had to like go out there and I had to solo pod when I didn't expect it, come up with all the headline, thumbnail, everything by myself, and then produce and host it with no warning, I think I'd be pretty freaking upset with you.
Starting point is 00:57:25 And I think that you would feel pretty bad about that and vice versa as well. And so it's like, I would almost say you and I do stuff for each other at times more than we do stuff for this job. Like we have to be here. We're going to lose our job and blah, blah, blah. But when you and I do certain things, it's to support each other. and when you have something going on in your life and you need me to help you out, you convey that, you communicate it with me.
Starting point is 00:57:51 And not only are we co-workers, but we're friends. So I want to support you and I want to be there for you. And like you said, that's a two-way street. Right. Like, you know. Oh, yeah, ESPO, absolutely. If you were going through anything serious, you know that you could go rely upon ESPO for that kind of, you know, confidence and also to make you feel better about it.
Starting point is 00:58:08 And also I think ESPO, if it was truly a serious situation, would say, okay take some time off and worry about yourself we'll figure it out over here but again you got to communicate those things because not communicating it and just going zero dark 30 for this is we're we're on we're on day four of hashtag getel watch derrick as i'm calling it it's it's just it's compounding day after day after day and the CEO is coming out and publicly saying it's a complete mystery i mean this is just it's an utter disaster and we are the laughing stock of major League Baseball right now because everyone is confused about why this situation is playing out the way that it has. I know we got a few more from Coolbro, but Coolbro does put one in the chat that says,
Starting point is 00:58:52 with great power comes great responsibility. And I know that's a Spider-Man quote, but that's very true. I mean, there is something that is to be said about, you know, you being an athlete just in general, right? And the impact you have on not only your team and your teammates, but the fans that watch you and root for you, right? But it's different when you are an elite super-level, superhero-level athlete like Catelle-Marte is. You know, somebody that's been in the MVP consideration, a multiple-time All-Star, a multiple-time Silver Slugger winner.
Starting point is 00:59:27 If I could, I would give Catea a motivational speech right now. And that motivational speech would basically be me and going, you need me to give you a motivational speech when you are who you are. are, you are the goddamn man. And what we need from you is for you to realize that and understand the importance that you have to this team, to this organization, to this fan base, and to this city. And not only that, man, but again, I know we still know nothing about this and I will be the first one to say as, you know, and Damon knows this as, as confident or whatever the hell you call this that I am when I'm on the show. I'm definitely.
Starting point is 01:00:10 not this, right? And so there are times where my own problems can bring me literally crumbling to my knees. But again, they also need to, there's times where if nothing more than to do it for Damon, I pick myself up. I come in here. I do the show. Yeah. And the people in the chat here, like that expect, you know, Derek to be on the PHNXD back show. It's not the same if he's not here. Like, you know, I think that there's that's, you know, like we built a community. I don't don't know. I mean, but I'm, I am, I did fact check what people are talking about here in the chat, Derek. And I do unfortunately have he did like it confirmation that he has liked this Instagram post that says that Catele Marte doesn't want to be a player for the diamond for Arizona.
Starting point is 01:00:58 I went to that post yesterday. I found the post and I searched for the likes and I didn't find a Cotel Marte like. Yeah. I just saw the screenshot. Right here it says liked by Catelle underscore Marte for. Yeah. That's. that's rough man that's rough so let's maybe hope that's not the case it has like seven comments yeah it's weird right and and then when you translate them they're all a bunch of people calling them kind of like a unreliable source somebody somebody said wow he did like the post and the author pinned it to the top of the of the post i mean i'd probably pin it too if that was the case and you said something scintillating about kattel and he liked it but
Starting point is 01:01:39 oh well man i mean i mean there's just better ways to handle it if you want to leave the diamondbacks i mean this goes back to him purging his instagram and other messages that he's tried to send in almost like a passive aggressive way right so i don't know but let's hope whatever this this is whatever this you know hurdle is is just that and not something that ends could tell time with this team right but i i i understand that that's like you know we're getting into like a social media game here. But like I would say that Kattel is the one that's acting like high school, a high school girl by taking this private situation to public social media airwaves.
Starting point is 01:02:23 Especially when he's not giving any information to the team. Correct. Especially when he's not providing any information of the Diamondbacks. So like what are you doing? Like, you know, sending jabs and shots on social media. I mean, it's just it's not the way to do it. He also said he wanted to be here forever. So like Katie says it.
Starting point is 01:02:39 That's about six months ago that he said that. Like that's the part that's utterly shocking is that he was just crying, Derek, when he was given no trade cause, no trade cause that essentially keeps him in Arizona as long as he wanted to stay in Arizona. That doesn't seem like a guy that was looking to leave. That seems like a guy that maybe was hearing rumors of him leaving and very much wanted to stay is what we interpreted that as. And I still interpreted as that. So how do you flip that fast in that short of a period of time? I don't know. I really don't.
Starting point is 01:03:17 Hopefully we have some more news for you tomorrow. I mean, I almost hope we don't, but I hope we have some clarity on this situation by the time we do our show tomorrow. We will be back with a post-game show after game one against the Cincinnati Red. So make sure to join us for that. I will be out of Chase Field and I will be doing everything I can to bring you as much as I humanly can on this story. Damon and I will almost certainly be going an hour after the final out. So make sure to stop by for us on that.
Starting point is 01:03:44 Again, thank you to Cool Grove for his super chats. He said, are you all going to talk about the fraudger scandal? No, we're not doing that right now. What happened? I was going to look this up. The whole thing with the ownership group. Please don't get Damon started on this. We'll do another 30 minutes.
Starting point is 01:03:59 He's leaving Chelsea because he's scared that his money empire is crumbling. Damon's definitely up to date on this, considering he has a, his own self-interest wrapped up in similar people. Not the Dodgers, but similar people. I'm getting the Dodgers stink off me, Derek. Yeah. He said, how were the concerts? The B&D in 40 last night.
Starting point is 01:04:18 Saw B&D in 40 last night. I, that's brand new day for those of you that aren't cool marble people. Yeah, man. I didn't know the acronym because I guess I'm not cool like that. Shout out, shout out to the bands I saw last night, Tropadelix, a little stranger. They were awesome, man.
Starting point is 01:04:33 I also saw a local legend DJ Z trip. was there. And again, I'm not going to age myself by talking about how long DJ Z trips been around here in the valley, but that was also cool too. And I know Damon, it was transformative for him last night to see Rufus DeSole. So anyway, thank you guys so much for your super chats. Thank you so much for your time. Appreciate you guys.
Starting point is 01:04:57 We'll be back tomorrow night with a postgame show. Hope you join us for that in the meantime. Follow me on social at cap underscore caveman with a K. You can follow Damon at Damon Dog with a DAWG. but as always we're all Damon's dogs. Bark, bark. Our shows at PH&X underscore Dbacks, but as always, all roads lead to at PH&X underscore sports
Starting point is 01:05:15 on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Thank you guys so much for stopping by. See you back here tomorrow. Until then. Hope you have a good Thursday with no baseball and a wonderful Friday until that game. Let's get a big series win this weekend, maybe even a series S word, and remember kids.
Starting point is 01:05:31 Baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when you're not on day four of Cotel Watch. and when the Dodgers are bankrupt.
