Starting point is 00:00:01 The Dodgers are winning postseason games with small ball. Is this the worst possible timeline for Arizona Diamondbacks fans? We're talking about this and more here in 30 seconds. Don't go anywhere. And welcome in to another edition of the PHNX DBAX show right here on PHNX. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. This man next to me is occasionally known as your Thunderstick. Jesse Friedman and our show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Go download the Bet365 app now. use that code of PHNX 365. When you sign up, choose your offer, and find out why it is never ordinary at Bet365. And of course, it's once again another extraordinary postseason. I guess it's a little bit more normal than we expected because it would feel like the buy is no longer, Jesse, a detriment to teams, three out of the four teams that received the first round buy due to being the higher seeds in the postseason have now advanced. with the Phillies being the only team left out. Don't hate that too much.
Starting point is 00:01:12 But again, once again, it kind of shows that the rest isn't as bad as we once thought it was. And this Dodgers team looks very, very strong as they smoke the Mets in game one of the NLCS, beating the Mets by a score of 9 to 0 and doing it, Jesse, with just one extra base hit, one double by Mookie Betts. That's it. That's an impressive outing. and their pitching has been incredible. I mean, that's the way the Dodgers have been winning games all year, you know.
Starting point is 00:01:42 It's get a guy to first. It's their DNA, right? It's them over to second. It's right. Yeah, it was, it was a weird game. It was not, you know, I think there was a lot of excitement for Dodgers' Mets. And rightfully so. I mean, the Dodgers are obviously a juggernaut, and the Mets have just gone on an absolutely insane run here over this,
Starting point is 00:02:02 over these last couple of months. But, yeah, it was not the, uh, the, uh, the, uh, the excitement level during the game is not exactly there. It's just a blow out pretty much from the beginning. Obviously, that the Mets never managed to score a run, which apparently scoring runs against the Dodgers is just like not a thing that teams do anymore. That scoreless streak, I think, is up to 33 innings, I believe now,
Starting point is 00:02:23 which ties a major league record for like one specific postseason run. So, yeah, what the Dodgers are doing from a pitching standpoint right now, even without all those key guys is impressive. and offensively, you know, it isn't just bets and Otani and Freeman. There really is a lot more depth here in this lineup than the lineup that the Diamondbacks faced last year in the playoffs. And we're seeing that we're seeing the results of that. Los Angeles is not allowed a run since game three of the NLDS.
Starting point is 00:02:54 And Per Elias Sports, their 33 innings pitched scoreless streak is a single, and in a single postseason is tied with the 1966 Baltimore Orioles for the longest scoreless streak in MLB history. It's impressive what they're doing. And again, this was a team that at one point, we said, didn't have the pitching potentially to go very far in the playoffs. Boy, did their pitching wake up.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Yeah, it did. And again, it's a lot of just their bullpen arms. I mean, their bullpen has been just outstanding in the postseason. And, you know, I still think that it's going to be 2054, the year 2054. And Blake Trinin is still going to be the Dodgers,
Starting point is 00:03:33 a guy. And Daniel Hudson's still going to be pitching the ninth inning and Alex Vessia is probably going to be involved somehow. Yeah, this Dodgers team, I mean, to their credit, they have a way of just finding ways to get the most out of guys. Like not every name in that bullpen is a star caliber performer, right? Like Ryan Brazier is their opener for the game today, which is about to start momentarily as we record right now. And like Anthony Bonda, like former Diamondbacks top prospect who looked like he might be out of baseball. he's turned into a huge, a huge weapon for them.
Starting point is 00:04:08 And there's other narratives like that in their bullpen as well. So they deserve a lot of credit for what's happened there. Obviously, the offense that they've built is very much tied to the amount of money that they spent on that group. But it's an impressive team. And it's a team that is going farther than, frankly, I thought they were going to go. And it's not just the money that they spend, Jesse. It's the moves they make.
Starting point is 00:04:35 The Detroit Tigers went home on Saturday. They were eliminated. And then they got to watch on Sunday, Jack Flaherty pitch an absolute gem for the Los Angeles Dodgers and not for the Tigers. Flaherty goes seven innings pitch, gives up two hits. No runs. Two walks, 6K. And you said, yes, the bullpen is good.
Starting point is 00:04:55 But Flaherty is out there giving them seven innings. And again, it's the Dodgers just finding a way to get better, even if that's via trade. And this was a trade from a trade. a team that went pretty far in the postseason themselves. So it's infuriating that the Dodgers are so, I guess, good at this. And it does feel like honestly, they should have more World Series titles over the last 10 years than they have. But, I mean, again, that's kind of where the playoffs and how random the postseason can
Starting point is 00:05:23 be comes into play. This season, it does feel. And someone said that the Padres poked them and woke them up really did feel like that. It felt like the Padres did enough to make this team. angry and make this team play with a certain amount of vitriol, a certain amount of, I guess, I guess with a chip on their shoulder. Similar to what we said about the Arizona Diamondbacks last year when they had Tommy fam who kind of seemed to give this team a little bit of an edge, a little bit of what they needed
Starting point is 00:05:49 in order to play, you know, in this in this postseason and kind of have some toughness to them. Yeah, Jack Flaherty had never had never pitched or had pitched seven innings once. all regular season. So for him to deliver in that way in game one was obviously huge for the Dodgers. And yeah, to your point, maybe there is something to that. Maybe there is something to all of the fireworks from game two of that series that they kind of helped the Dodgers the rest of the way.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Dave Roberts went on the record saying that his comments about Manny Machado and that throw that Manny made into the dugout. I'm paraphrasing, but Dave, essentially, admitted that like he was trying to get his guys going a little bit with the way that he responded to that incident maybe he didn't think it was quite as big of a deal as he made it out to be when he was discussing with the media but whatever he did whatever the dodgers did it worked managerial tactic right i mean like you're gonna if you're gonna make a mistake like that and you're going to give me some sort of ammunition for me to fire up the boys then a good manager should use
Starting point is 00:06:59 that as a way to motivate his team and to get the best out of them and they're They did that now. Now they're on a role. And this is a team that has somehow caught the fire that we saw the Mets, you know, catch and kind of have not only through the end of the season, but so far during this postseason. But, I mean, you also have the Guardians advancing. Like I said, the tigers did get to watch Jack Flaherty pitch that gem. And here is where we stand with the final four teams in baseball.
Starting point is 00:07:28 You have the guardians, the Yankees, the Mets, and the Dodgers here in the final four. Just small market teams, Jesse. Just some real small market, you know, just humble blue collar teams. But, I mean, I will say this about this. Once again, I mean, the narrative of the layoff being bad is dead, right? I mean, at least it just not being a story. Never alive in my mind, Derek. I never bought in.
Starting point is 00:07:52 And it was never a big enough sample size really to buy into it, right? But again, it's like this is going to happen. We might have a season next year where none of these teams make it in. We might have next year we're all four advance. to the CS round, right? It really, it's just, I guess it's a good thing, right? It's a good thing that we can put that narrative to bed because, again, for all intents and purposes,
Starting point is 00:08:16 the idea of having a little bit of time off after playing 162 game season and getting a first round by before having to play baseball again, it seems like it's a good thing and there's nothing negative about that. And the only negative is that baseball is weird and sometimes when you do take a break, you kind of fall out of the rhythm that you were in.
Starting point is 00:08:36 To me, the only stat that really matters on this front is that no team that got to buy has ever been eliminated in the wild card round because that is impossible. They do not play in the wild card round. And people don't talk about that enough. They want to just talk about the division series results. And yes, there's been shades of evidence there at times, which, as I said earlier, I've never really bought into. But yeah, you're getting a free pass from a three-game series that is prone to all sorts of randomness and weirdness.
Starting point is 00:09:09 It's absolutely where you want to be if you're a baseball team in the playoffs. I like this format quite a bit. And I think that that's why I'm glad that this narrative is dead. I think that we've seen the MLB playoffs kind of adapt and change throughout the last 10 years. And in my opinion, this is the best version of it. So I think that's the benefit of this narrative. being dead is that we don't have to see baseball should if we were talking about you know all four teams that came from the wild card round now being in the you know in the c s baseball may have had to
Starting point is 00:09:42 start looking into it even though there is no real like you said there's no real narrative there like elise said it's a loser talk narrative but it's something that they would have had to look into because it's if it continued it would have gotten to the point of of there being some validity to it right There would have been a story. It would have been something that Major League Baseball would have to take a look at even if they ultimately decided not to do anything. But now I have a new story and I think Phillies fans will hate this one as much as they hate me talking about them being the only team that didn't advance to the CS round, Jesse. And that's the fact that right now the lowest ticket you can find for the Guardians versus the Yankees is $73 before fees. $73 to go to Yankee Stadium to watch a postseason game.
Starting point is 00:10:28 and not just any postseason game, an ALCS postseason game. And that's $47 cheaper than they would have cost you on Friday. So does that mean that there's no good baseball fans in New York? So you're saying. I'm trying to use the Chase Field narrative thing from last year. Remember that I will talk about. Yeah. Does that mean there's no good baseball fans in New York now, Jesse?
Starting point is 00:10:49 I guess so. I guess it has to. Or is it just that it's, you know, on a Monday. Like, again. Right, right. That would be a factor. So you're saying that a few days ago, ALCS tickets were a bit more expensive. And now that people know it's the Guardians.
Starting point is 00:11:06 I mean, I don't know if the Tigers would necessarily have drawn like a ton. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, this is a, it's a really interesting ALCS this year. I mean, it has like some David and Goliath vibes in terms of just the payroll for each of these teams. I tweeted it out the other day. if you're one of those people who believes that how much money you spend does not have an impact in baseball, or at least not a significant impact, the final four teams does not exactly support that narrative. Three of these teams are literally rank one, two, and three if you go by the collective bargaining tax payroll.
Starting point is 00:11:45 The Dodgers actual payroll is lower than that because a certain player on the Dodgers is only making $2 million this year when he should be, he's actually his contract is of course much larger than that right yeah that's where I was going but yeah yeah like the the CBT payrolls the Mets are at 350 million the Dodgers are at 340 the Yankees are at 315 and then what's the line in money ball then there's 50 feet of crap and then there's the guardians at 140 million right and not to say the guardians are a bad team I mean they deserve to be here they've had an outstanding season but yeah They're the only team in baseball that has managed to survive this long while not spending at basically the very top of the rest of the league. Well, we already have a Lindor home run, a leadoff dinger.
Starting point is 00:12:37 We are up against it considering we're a baseball podcast going at the same time as one of these postseason games. So that game started about seven minutes ago. And I'm sure the Mets are going to do everything they can to make our headline for this episode as irrelevant as possible. But regardless, right now, it does kind of suck to be a Diamondback fan and watch, especially these two teams go up against each other because I don't know about you guys. I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of fans rooting for the Mets because of the underdog nature. I'm still a little bad at them for, you know, what they did in game two of that doubleheader. But that's just a personal grievance. And then there's the Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:13:15 And you know how we all feel about the Dodgers. Some of you are going to go drop a chat comment right now that accuse me of being a Dodger fan. I know that's coming. and expected. But I will say like for as great as game one looked for the Dodgers and it's easy to look at a nine nothing game and just sort of just sort of draw the conclusion that the Dodgers are going to coast to the World Series. The Dodgers are still up against it a little bit from a pitching standpoint, at least on
Starting point is 00:13:43 paper. You would rather have Sean Mania and Luis Severino and the depth of options that the Mets have then the Dodgers just going out there with Jack Flaherty and a Yoshinovu Yamamoto, who is not all that far removed from an arm injury. And then these bullpen games, like what they're doing right now, right? If the Mets find a way to win this game, the narrative shifts from like the Dodgers are coasting to the World Series all the way to like, wow, the Mets are actually in pretty good position to win this thing.
Starting point is 00:14:12 So we're still a long, long way from really knowing where this NLCS is headed, even though obviously game one was very one-sided. I just told people that the game was on, Jesse, and eight people stopped watching our show. That was a big mistake. It was probably a big mistake on my phone. But of course, you might put it on in the background, mute it, and then hang out with us.
Starting point is 00:14:34 And Elise is right. They do also a Bueller. That's also a thing. They do, but there's a reason I didn't even really mention him, right? Like Walker Bueller is not exactly a source of stability in that rotation. I know he was able to give some length in his last start, but he was not particularly effective and really hasn't been all season for them. So the Mets have the better options there.
Starting point is 00:14:56 And even though you'd certainly take the Dodgers lineup over the Mets any day of the week, I still think there could be a universe where the Mets pitching wins out in the end, or at least extends this series to six, seven games and makes this a very, very interesting and entertaining NLCS. We're not going to have the small market debate about Phoenix. again, I'm not doing that. It's not a small market. It's objectively not a small market in terms of population. You can't make that argument.
Starting point is 00:15:26 But it is a small market in terms of sports for some reason based on other factors. And of course, that's based on you looking that data. And they're not even small market. They're kind of like middle of the back just outside of I feel like top 10 for a lot of sports and such like that. But they definitely don't have the money here that big market teams do. And I think that's the point, right? Very few people take a Take a trip to Phoenix and say while I'm there
Starting point is 00:15:51 Let me go catch a Diamondbacks game because I want to see Chase Fields so bad Right, so let's just keep things like that in mind But of course, you know, I think the Dodgers winning has one silver lining if the Dodgers should Complete the task here and and and Make our nightmares come true Jesse and that is there's a silver lining there is a silver lining believe it or not I thought of one I came up with one, and that is maybe they won't try so hard next year. Maybe, just maybe, like a certain fantasy football champion, maybe they'll have a terrible year next year. I'm just saying, I've only won one game and things don't look good for game two is what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Yeah, you played Saul this this past week. So I'm not mad about it. I'm just mad about my team in general existing. I've never wanted to not play fantasy football more, but I get up every Sunday and I still put in the work. I just want to say for the record, Derek also lost to my fantasy football team as well. I mean,
Starting point is 00:16:55 you didn't need to. That wasn't necessary. That was input that wasn't, it didn't highlight anything going on here. I already said I lost all my games except one, Kevin. I only, the first I'd be was Totry again. Because that's what I do.
Starting point is 00:17:10 I beat Totry. Whether it's a championship game by less than a point. or whether it was last week where I had the biggest blowout of the week. But I don't talk about my championship on this program because I am a humble champion. And you guys brought that out in me. And I had to talk about it now. Well, much like the Texas Rangers who obviously won the thing last year, not so great. This year, I did hear you've been dealing with some TV contract instability.
Starting point is 00:17:38 It might have impacted your ability to spend in free agency over the off season. right i mean these are valid these are valid excuses look i'm just saying is that people want to watch my team on the field and they can't and it's not it's not fair to the fans yeah it's a grave injustice for the fans yeah and i i'm fine with being the texas rangers of fantasy football i'll wear my arlington shirt tomorrow just because you said that but uh anyway we do appreciate you guys being here in the phnxports youtube channel if you haven't subscribed to the channel yet make sure to do so now don't know what you're waiting for uh hit that like button because that makes me feel better about myself.

Starting point is 00:18:41 On the other side of this break, we are going to talk about your mailbag Monday questions. And perhaps, you know, if 2025 might be the end of the road for this particular Diamondbacks team, we will discuss it. So don't go anywhere. But it's Jesse's favorite time of the year. And it's time to talk about Bluchu because I get to embarrass Jesse and also have a great time myself. And look, it's not embarrassing. That's the bigger thing is Blue Choo is an online service that delivers the same act of ingredients as Viagra. Cialis and Lovietra, but at a fraction of the cost in an attruable form.
Starting point is 00:19:18 But most importantly, they arrive in a very discreet package. And of course, when that does arrive, you get to say, my package is here. So that's fun. But does it work? Do you think you need it? Do you think you don't need it? Come on. Come on.

Damon isn't here right now. So Kevin, just to let you know, we go on a boy's trip and we don't exclude Derek on said boys trip to He La River Resorts and Casinos.
Starting point is 00:21:09 I'm in. I'm always down for boys. See how easy that was? Damon and meanwhile. You'd hear a boys trip, you just say yes. See? That's what we thought, at least for Jesse's birthday. But that's not the case with David.
Starting point is 00:21:20 Whatever happened? I don't know. But speaking of which, big happy birthday to our guy, Jesse Friedman, turned 21 years old, finally. Oh, my gosh. No, he's a little bit older than that, but not much older than that. What did you do for your birthday? Did you do anything exciting? Yeah, you know, just hung out with a few friends, hung out with the family.
Starting point is 00:21:39 It's pretty chill. Excellent. You know, watch some baseball, of course. Of course. What would a birthday without baseball be? Having it like being a huge baseball person and having a birthday in October is. It's pretty electric. It's a winning combination for sure.
Starting point is 00:21:55 It's the reason this man matches my freak, of course. But speaking about you, my freak, you know what day it is. You know what time it is. And you know that every year on this podcast is our year except when we don't make the playoffs. Every month on this podcast is Hispanic Heritage. month. Every day on this podcast is Indigenous People Day and shout out to the wonderful event going outside our building right now. But of course, today is Monday. And every Monday, we go to the mailbag. Kevin, let's go. All right. First question. What do we got in the mailbag today, Kevin?
Starting point is 00:22:39 All right. So our first question of the day, ladies and gentlemen, is going to be from Travis Moore. Our lead off, lead off question, asker. Our lead off hitter today is Travis Moore. He says, now that we're a little removed from the end of the regular season, can we finally admit that this was really a good season with a frustrating end? But can we admit that this was a good season? He goes on to say yes, especially with that eight-run lead that we blew in Milwaukee as context. But this team won 89 games.
Starting point is 00:23:04 That was last season's best wildcard team. And he went on to explain more of this year. There were more tweets than that. Well, we've told you, Travis, we're not reading all that. But no, I'm just joking. I do appreciate that. But to get down to your question, I do think it's a fair point. It's something that we've tried to highlight a little bit, but it is a little hard considering that it's heartbreaking for the Diamondbacks to have had the season they had when 89 games is still not still not make the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:23:29 But I think he's right. I think that it does get lost overall that they didn't, you know, that this was a bad season just because they didn't make that end goal of making the playoffs. And I mean, that sometimes is what sports is about, right? Making the postseason, giving yourself a chance of the championship. but it was yeah it was still a season that was filled with so much fun and it was especially for three months there it felt like we were watching you know one of the best teams in all of baseball you had the confidence that they could beat any team in baseball and it was just it was joy to watch this team at times yeah and and not to uh you know go go too far in the opposite
Starting point is 00:24:10 direction but i do think the part of what makes the diamond backs not being in the postseason so difficult is that it was such a great season that this team like if the diamond backs had found a way to make it in if if the Mets had swept the double header or the diamond backs don't blow the eight run lead but whatever it is if they find a way to make it in none of us are surprised if the diamond backs are still playing games right now right no one surprised by that based on that the run that the team went on last season and the fact that this year's roster was better across the board the fact that Some of the starting pitchers seem to be finding some semblance of a rhythm or at least finish the season on a high note. Brandon Fott was very good in his last start.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Zach Gallen was very good in his last last start. Mero Kelly looked pretty good in his last several starts of the year. It was not hard to imagine this Diamondbacks team getting into the postseason and going on another deep run. So yeah, this was, I mean, 89 wins is, you know, we set it from right when the season ended. 89 wins is in itself. It's hard to look at that. as a total failure. I mean,
Starting point is 00:25:15 that is five more wins than they had last year. I think it's, it's higher or around the number that I would have predicted for the Diamondbacks this season, probably higher. I think I landed somewhere in the 86, 87 range. So it was a successful season in some ways.
Starting point is 00:25:31 But, yeah, again, that just makes it maybe all the more difficult that the Diamondbacks aren't still playing games right now. I appreciate Daft House's comment. He said,
Starting point is 00:25:39 watching the Debacks virtually take game one of the Wildcard series, did make me feel better somehow. And yes, make sure not to miss out on our pH and X plays series. Game two is right around the corner. Game two is coming up. Yeah, but make sure not to miss that because it might help a little bit. Elise says not making the playoffs after what was invested in this team after last year is a huge letdown.
Starting point is 00:25:59 And yeah, you're not wrong about that. Yeah. I just, I think that at the end of the day, what happened was the high watermark was changed for this team. Right? This was a young team that was exciting last year. And if you swapped these two seasons in a way, right, where they came close but fell one game short. And now this season, they made the playoffs and make that run, right?
Starting point is 00:26:24 I mean, overall, it's the right. We just have this weird. It's almost like one of Sarah Lang's wee, you know, like you have this weird bump in the trajectory where because of what happened last year, because of the playoff run that they made now, again, the expectations, which are expectations, Tori Lavello, make you feel like that's the next inevitable step, right? That's what we do in life. It's the next step. Like, okay, we meet someone in a relationship. We start dating them. Things go well. We move in together. We get married. We have a kid.
Starting point is 00:26:56 And sometimes you're following steps. And that's the steps. And everything, if everything goes in that direction, then your life was great and perfect and how it should be. And life doesn't go that way. Sometimes you had this happen and divorces happen and things happen. Right. And so like, For the Diamondbacks, it's not right. It's not like an even path right now because of the success from last year. And I think that kind of overshadows this year and makes this year feel like more of a failure than it actually is. But I'm with Elise. Like the fact that you can go back and trace a handful of games that if they would have won this one, this one or this, this one, they would have been in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:27:30 I also tried to cope with it by saying like, well, with the way that this team was playing, how can we, how could we have, you know, done much? when we got to the postseason. And you could, you said those exact words last season. With the way this team is playing, how could they have done anything? And then they go off in the playoffs and have that magical run that they had. So I also think it's,
Starting point is 00:27:52 it's funny that if this team had won 87 games but made the playoffs, then the narrative is so different, right? This season suddenly would become everything that you hopes it would be, right? It's an improvement over last year. It's a step in the right direction. You're back in the playoffs for the second straight year. Like all the vibes would be positive. but the fact that they won 89 games but missed the playoffs,
Starting point is 00:28:13 it's just making the postseason is ultimately what matters. Yeah, it goes to show the number of games you win is really irrelevant at the end of the day. Making the postseason is all that really matters, right? And I mean, that's, and like, again, there are fans in Philadelphia right now asking a lot of questions about that team. And there's a lot of doubt. There's a lot of potential change that might be happening within that organization. and that is a team that had the best record in baseball for a significant portion of the season and also made it, you know, to the division series and clinch their division, right?
Starting point is 00:28:46 But again, it's expectations. So the expectations for that team were higher than getting bounced by the Mets in the division series round. And so since they didn't accomplish that goal, now their season is seen as a failure, right? I mean, I think the Padres may be in a slightly different situation just because they, I don't know if they were necessarily expected to make the play. playoffs this year. Like I think they had a shot, right? But given that they had just traded Juan Soto, you know, they did get Dylan C's. They did add some pieces as well. I don't know if the expectations for them were quite as high entering the year. But I do remember a time in like mid June when the conversation about the wild card race was that it was it was tragic that there were three spots, right? Because like none of these teams deserve to make the postseason. I'm looking at the standings from. June 15th. And on June 15th, the Atlanta Braves were at the top wildcard spot at 38 and 30. So that, that's reasonable. They're eight, they're eight games over 500. But then the next wildcard team
Starting point is 00:29:47 was the Padres and they were 37 and 37. They were a 500 team occupying the second wildcard spot. And the third wildcard team at the time was the St. Louis Cardinals, who were a game under 500 at 34 and 35. heck on on june 15th derrick i have to go all the way to the very bottom of the nl standings to find the new york metz only the rockies and the marlins had a worse record than the met's uh on june 15th and granted like all these teams are clustered like right on top of each other so even the met's really two games out at the time but i'm sure you can find an episode of this show where we said you know the only teams really out of it are the marlins and the ruggies and maybe the mets too and yeah we probably got closer than we should have to saying that the cause was completely lost for the Mets at some point.
Starting point is 00:30:35 But yeah, it just goes to show that like during the season, trying to look at the standings in June or July and feel like you really know how many wins it's going to take to make the playoffs, you just can't do that because something can happen. Like what happened this year where the Braves and the Mets and the Padres and the D-BACs are all playing really, really good baseball for two, three months to end the season and suddenly 89 wins.
Starting point is 00:31:00 you know, you win 89 games and you're stuck at home. So it just, yeah, you don't know until you know, you don't know until you're, you know, well into August, really September, how many games you're going to have to win to make it into the playoffs. All right. What else we got in the mailback, Kevin? All right. Question number two today is,
Starting point is 00:31:20 what are your thoughts on the long-term pitching outlook for this team? I'm kind of nervous that Gallen and Kelly walk after next year. We have fought, but the other young guys don't start. scream top of rotation. Maybe we see another gallon type trade says Gabby Durth. Yeah, that's a good point. I mean, it is something that the window for this team is closing soon,
Starting point is 00:31:40 right? We already know that the next year's team is going to most likely look much different and going to be without a lot of the power that they had this season. And it could be more than we're even expecting if they don't bring back Christian Walker. Jack Peterson and Randall Gritchick most
Starting point is 00:31:56 likely will sign elsewhere. Hoping none of these things. These aren't things we're trying to speak in the reality. It's just things that make logical sense. But remember, last offseason, Lord is signing somewhere else made logical sense as well. And he came back to this team. So I think, though, when it comes to the pitching, yeah, there's a real concern there that the Diamondbacks had two of the best pitchers in franchise history.
Starting point is 00:32:18 And both of those guys might walk at the end of the next season. And that's not great. I mean, I will say this. We've seen so far, you know, that the Diamondbacks can find additional talent. And when you look at guys like Dre Jameson and Ryan Nelson and other guys that they've developed internally that have become really good pitchers for this team despite Drey's injury, you know, there's there's hope that they can continue to develop guys. Brandon Fott has really become at times one of the Diamondbacks best pitchers and he was one of the most consistent this season. So I don't love the idea of a post-gallon, post-Meryl Kelly future. I think, though, that this team is going to have to continue to adapt and find, you know,
Starting point is 00:32:58 find pitchers that they develop within their organization. Jilbert Diaz is a great example of that and I think that they have a couple of other guys that could be the future of this team. We're going to be following around Yumen Lin around Arizona Fall League as much as possible because we think that guy could have a huge
Starting point is 00:33:14 impact on the future of this franchise as well. So I mean, yeah, it's not it's not great thinking about Gallin and Kelly not being on this team anymore but these were also guys that at one time weren't what they are now. I mean these were Yeah. This was there was a point where we got gallon.
Starting point is 00:33:30 A lot of people were sad. We traded jazz chish chishol away. And obviously, Merrill Kelly was at risk coming over from Korea, being the age he was and wondering if he was going to be able to pitch in major league. And obviously he could. So, I mean,
Starting point is 00:33:43 I think the diamondbacks are going to continue to have to be creative. They're never going to go out there and pick up like the best starting pitcher on the market. And if they do, that guy is not going to be good for this team period, because that's not how things work out for this franchise. He's just going to be absolutely crap, and he's going to have the worst season of his career. If the Diamondback signed Corbyn Burns, right? It feels like he'd have a 60 RA next year, right?
Starting point is 00:34:08 He'd buy a ranch in North Scottsdale and spend all of his time there. Yeah, I think this is a really valid concern and a good question to consider because this Diamondbacks team, these last couple years, the success that they've had, a lot of it was built on the backs of a few key moves that they made. Right. One of them being the Cattel Marte trade, huge reason for this team success, the fact that they have a star level player at second base. And a couple of those other moves are the Zach Allen trade, the Jazz Chisholm trade that you mentioned. And assigning Merrill Kelly for pennies on the dollar out of Korea and having him blossom into one of the best starters in the league. And yeah, you can build on moves like that for a certain number of years.
Starting point is 00:34:56 But eventually, those guys are either going to age to the point where they're not effective anymore or in this case, potentially walk as free agents. And you have to come up with something else. You have to have other guys who are waiting in the wings to take those spots. And I think realistically looking at the farm system that the diamondbacks have right now, I'm not sure. You know, as much as I think some of these guys could have bright futures, I'm not sure that I see a Jill. Dias or a human lin or you know a Dylan Ray some of these pitching prospects it is hard to look at any of those guys and see a path to an ace caliber pitcher and to your point like we didn't necessarily see that was that guy down back in the day either so these things do change but
Starting point is 00:35:45 it's a totally valid concern like yes brandon fought has i think has some potential is he going to be a Zach Allen like ace caliber starter someday that's a little hard to just say, I think you have to kind of look at this with rose-colored glasses if you're going to, you know, look at any of the Diamondbacks young pitchers and feel like they have a real, you know, a good chance to be a Zach Gallen caliber starter someday. Those guys are really, really hard to find. And there's a reason that the debacks have had the success that they have with Zach Gallen at the helm of this rotation. Well, in Zach Gallen, in relative terms, is still a young pitcher himself. So it's not like. Yeah, yeah. It's not like Zach Gallen's story is told where you're looking at his career at this point. being like that dude's an ace right he he had an amazing start to his career he said an mlb record for the longest stretch of starts with allowing three earned runs or less and that was that showed his consistency and i think that is what zack gallon is a consistent pitcher that's going to go out there he's going to give up three runs or less and he's going to give you an opportunity to win right but i think that that narrative kind of transformed into zack gallon being like this
Starting point is 00:36:51 incredible pitcher that's going to go out there and overpowered the you know opposition and it's to say he didn't have a few of those starts but more more he did throw 98 and it's likeably a few times this year but i'm saying my point being is that gallon has just been more about being effective and again it's like there there is something to be said about you know that it took a while for people to warm up to him but once we did and once we found out he had that milkman nickname we were all on board with that gallon and he immediately kind of became a star i think it took for a little bit the rest of that season but the following season Zach was, you know, solid.
Starting point is 00:37:28 But I think at this point, really, the Diamondbacks are going to have to continue to find a way to find those pictures, right? I mean, it's going to be through trades. It's going to be through moves where they can improve their farm system, bring in young prospects and possibly find that guy. I just, I don't think that I don't want to get that I don't want it to become a thing where the gallon and Merrill Kelly years were squandered. I actually, I actually think this team over, overperformed or outperformed, you know, what you thought they were going to be able to do in the time that those guys were here. And I think both of those guys outperformed what a lot of people thought they thought their ceiling might be. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:08 Yeah. And Zach is 29. So he's not like young, young per se. But he's still, I would say in his prime. Yeah. And it's not to say that it's impossible for the diamond backs to bring these guys back. Gallin feels quite doubtful to me, given that he is a Scott Boris. client.
Starting point is 00:38:26 Maybe fires for us. We've seen that happen before somewhere. Yeah. Galen is like Gallin did not really have a very good season this year. Yeah. Right. A 365 ERA. Pretty inconsistent, spent some time on the injured list.
Starting point is 00:38:41 Even if he had a season like this next year, he'd still be very highly sought after on the open market because he is he is the kind of guy that you can talk yourself into aging well. Because he does have, you know, those spurts of Velo like you mentioned. average like 94 on his fastball this year. But is Zach Gallen averaging 92 miles an hour, like a lost cause? I don't think so because he's got, he's got a crazy curveball. He's got a really good change up. He knows how to use his pitch as well.
Starting point is 00:39:11 He's the kind of guy that teams are going to be willing to give that long-term commitment to when maybe a, you know, a Jordan Montgomery, uh, what was, or even a Blake Snell had some issues getting that long-term commitment. So, uh, it's hard, it's hard for me to see it with Gala. And Merrill Kelly, I think more realistic. The DeBaxter are very likely going to just pick up that club option for $7 million next year. And it's not all that hard to imagine Merrill Kelly coming back on a short-term deal. He's certainly getting up there in age.
Starting point is 00:39:41 I don't think anyone's giving him a six-year deal at this point. He is 36 years old. This is actually Merrill Kelly's birthday as I pull up his baseball reference page. Happy birthday. Happy birthday, happy birthday, October 14th, he turns 36. today. So there you go. Wow. Well, we have an update on the Mets game. Apparently, the Mets are up six to nothing making, uh, they, they just, it's like our, our headline just keeps eroding as time goes on while this game is happening. I mean, but, but that's not like, like if you're a D-BACs fan,
Starting point is 00:40:15 you're probably not too disappointed about that, right? It's a good thing. We did it. We pulled a little reverse jinks in order to help the, uh, help the Mets out today. Well, I mean, they got, they got wax yesterday, nine to nothing. So they are coming out today. They are up six to nothing right now on on the Dodgers. And I mean, maybe a bullpen start in a baseball game. Is it the best idea?
Starting point is 00:40:34 Jesse, I think I've seen that idea go wrong for us at one point. Yeah, it worked for the Dodgers in the Padre series. But it's hard to win like all your bullpen games. Yeah. The debacks did, they did win one, right?
Starting point is 00:40:46 They won game four against the, against the Phillies. And then they lost game four in the world series. Yeah, it's never going to be ideal to be reliant on bullpen games. games in a postseason. She just wants us here the whole time doing the game and doing the show until the game. The moment we come we come off air, Derek.
Starting point is 00:41:02 Yeah, Dodgers are going to come rolling back for the Mets. So we're not going to hear to the end of the end of it. For sure. We're going to do. Well, let's end it now. Let's just wrap it up. We got one more question from the mailbag. Then we got to do some more partnership work.
Starting point is 00:41:14 But what do we got? Question number three is from the basketball and football guy. They ask, is there any chance we could make a big splash and free agency like a Blake Snell or someone who could cost about that same. amount of money. I doubt it. I doubt it. I'm not my chances aren't very good for that because I feel like if the diamondbacks we're going to make that splash in free agency, their focus would be on bringing guys back that had a great season for this team. And I don't think they're going to have the money for that. I don't think they're going to have the money for Christian Walker. I don't think they're going to
Starting point is 00:41:44 have the money for a lot of things. I am actually very, very, very doubtful that the diamond backs are going to make any kind of big splash in free agency. And I'm scared out of my mind. Jesse? Yeah. I, you know, Juan Soto to the D-BACs, as much as we would love to do a, to do a full podcast about how realistic that is. I was thinking either Soto or maybe you split up the resources and go both Corbyn-Burns and Max-Fried, you know, like a lot of people have talked about that with the D-Backs. You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket, right? You want to spread, you want to spread the money around a little bit.
Starting point is 00:42:26 Is this where people are going to start asking him if he's on OGs because I get that treatment myself all the time. Just saying. Yeah, it's really hard for me to imagine the Diamondbacks being serious contenders for, I mean, there are some big name free agents, right? Soto, Burns, Alex Breggman, Max Fried, Blake Snell. R.A. wants Tony Taters. Matt Chapman signed the extension with the Giants. He's off the market. So, yeah, like, I mean, Willie Adamas, Hassan Kim, I don't really see a roster fit there for the debacks.
Starting point is 00:42:55 I don't think they're going to sign Pete Alonzo if they're spending on a first basement, it's to bring back Christian Walker. So to me, it feels like the ceiling for free agency is bringing Christian Walker back, at least in terms of what you would spend on one individual player. I have a hard time seeing the diamond back spend any more than what it would take to to resign Christian Walker. I agree with that 100%. 100%. And we will have a few more questions here from my mailbag on the other side of our break.
Starting point is 00:43:24 So don't you go anywhere. We got to give a shout out to branded Bills. Of course, they are a local company from right here in Mesa, Arizona. They make some amazing hats. Starting point is 00:45:34 it is game time all right what else we got kev from our mailbag all right next question what role do you anticipate dray jameson having with this team next year that's a good question so puts me yeah good good good good swing at it I that's what I would have said it was a check swing it was a check swing it was a check swing uh this question puts a little fire in my blood jesse because again we know what dray jameson has been for this team in the past we know that is a player that has that dog in him and I I honestly think it doesn't matter where you put dray because he will accept any role it feels like that you gave him I feel like he could be a valuable asset as a high end role believer for this team next season.
Starting point is 00:46:23 And I really don't think that, I mean, there's any rush for him to be anything else at this point. Like the Diamondbacks right now, based on our calculations, have six starting pitchers for 2025 still as long as Jordan Montgomery decides to take them up on that player option. So should that be the case,
Starting point is 00:46:39 I doubt that they can find a role for Jameson to fit in in the starting rotation, but that might be for the best. He just has a certain quality that I believe when you look at him, when you listen to his answers, when you see how he plays the game. I think he could be a really good, you know, back end reliever for this team.
Starting point is 00:46:57 Yeah, yeah, I agree. It'll be interesting to see how the Diamondbacks approach this. We don't know the answer to this yet, unfortunately. Tori was asked a couple of times in the latter portion of the season what the Diamondbacks plans were with Jameson and he didn't have an answer to that question, at least at that time. He knew while he was rehabbing, though, that he was racing people. That's for sure. He did.
Starting point is 00:47:19 He did. And there was some talk of Jameson. Jameson pitching in the fall league, which of course did not happen. He's not on the fall league roster, but he could be probably getting some sort of reps in some other capacity this winter. So I don't know. It'll be interesting to see how the debacks approach this. In theory, their starting rotation is full. We've talked about how even though the things did not go well for them in the rotation this past year,
Starting point is 00:47:43 there's not like a ton of room to make any additions. So he still could be useful as a depth piece. You can never have too much starting pitching. So maybe the debacks go that route and they try to bring him back as a starter. But maybe they just are like, hey, he just had Tommy John surgery. Let's not push it too much. We like what we saw out of the bullpen when he was in that role for the debacks. And maybe we just want to continue down that road.
Starting point is 00:48:08 So stay tuned. Hopefully we'll have an update on this at some point over the off season. It doesn't matter where he plays because the quotes are going to be amazing. And that's all that we. Right. That's our primary. That's our primary concern is though like we need we need more quotes like it puts fire in my blood because that's something we still need to put on a t-shirt.
Starting point is 00:48:27 All right. What else we got, Kevin? All right. Next question is from Kevin Newman fan club, aka piece of Yoshi. Whoa, Ryan Thompson Hater Club. What happened here, Kevin? My God. I guess I call him Kevin.
Starting point is 00:48:42 I was like, I was like, look, I had nothing to do. I always see a Kevin Newman fan club and I want to call him Kevin. No, it's piece of yod. What we got from Yoshi? All right. Pisa Yoshi wants to know. How much do you think it'll take to get a Sabrina Carpenter picture in a Dodgers jersey? Okay.
Starting point is 00:48:57 So, Jesse, you might not understand this, but Sabrina Carpenter is Sabrina Carpenter is the Drake of sports, basically, as far as a woman is concerned. Okay. If she roots for your sports team, they're doomed. Kevin, I think we have some proof of this prior to this one. There's her in a Philly's jersey. We know what happened, obviously, the Philly shortly after she wore this. What else we got? There's her showing up in New York in a cowboy sweater.
Starting point is 00:49:21 Cowboys got pummeled by the lions on Sunday. Not just pummeled. She wore this and then the Cowboys who have a long history of football games, right? A lot of football games in Cowboy Stadium. That was their worst home loss, I think, since Jerry Jones took over. Right. Which is unbelievable. Unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:49:36 Then we also have her here in a Toronto Maple Leaves jersey, and that did not go well for the Maple Leafs after she performed in this jersey. Does she have no loyalty? Um, not like Dr. Does she just cheer for different? That's her with an England soccer kit on and England's never going to win. They call this. Never in me and Derek's beloved pro wrestling, Jesse, they call this a cheap pop. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:59 You know, you go to a place, you wear their, you do as the Romans do when they roam, you know. You come out and you say, uh, it's a great night to be right here in Phoenix, Arizona. And then the crowd loses their mind. And that's basically what she's doing. Uh, well, we do. We did some history. And we found many years ago, Sabrina. Carpenter did in fact take a picture in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform.
Starting point is 00:50:21 So there you go. That's for you, Yoshi. That explains why they're currently losing six to nine. Exactly. Well, we're on earth that picture. And there we go. We got that. And Sabrina Carpenter, you keep yourself away from our Phoenix sons.
Starting point is 00:50:35 I'm going to tell you that right now. Andrew Dang, welcome back. We've missed you. We haven't seen you a while. I think Andrew sent a super chat. Kevin, I wanted to address that. He said, dang, Dodgers are. are a tough out rooting or tough out rooting for the met's hoping it'll be a subway series as a yanks fan
Starting point is 00:50:53 any pitchers for minors dback should bring up and yeah i think we talked a little bit about that sorry for not addressing your question a little bit earlier but yeah i mean i it's it's going to be interesting to see what happens next year i think some guys might make uh their their debut but for the most part i feel like the diamondbacks right now are like even though things didn't go well pitching wise this year, I'm very interested to see what happens next year with essentially a very similar pitching staff all the way around. I can't imagine there's going to be many changes. Yeah, in terms of pitchers who could be called up, we talked about Umin, Lynn earlier. He made his AAA debut toward the end of the regular season. So once a guy gets to AAA,
Starting point is 00:51:34 at least some semblance of the candidate to be like a depth starter for you at some point. Just keep your ERA under seven. Yeah, as long as the ERA, Yeah, as long as it starts with, you know, something, something, I don't know, what's the reasonable, the reasonable threshold? You're setting it at seven as long as it's below seven. I mean, 5.33 is average, I feel like. Yeah, 5.33. That would be pretty good. Yeah, so I think he definitely has a shot to contribute.
Starting point is 00:52:01 Obviously, Jill Ber Diaz, we saw him in stretches. Wouldn't be surprised to see him back in the big leagues contributing as a starter, Christiana mena. Similar category there made just the one star at the big. league level for the diamond backs got hurt toward the end of the season he could factor in on some level next season um those are those are probably the main guys i guess relievers kyle amen is someone here in the fall league that we've talked about a little bit has a chance to maybe contribute out of the bullpen at some point in 2025 uh so yeah those are those are the main names that they come to mind for me all right what else we got we got one more kev last but not
Starting point is 00:52:39 least we have corb carroll obviously the real corbin carroll obviously corbin wants to know you have to become the physical representation of an MLB team which team are you choosing i.e if you chose the diamondbacks uh you'd have to be a snake for the rest of your life for the rest of my life yeah i just want i just want to start this one off we were kind of kicking this around in the production meeting earlier um the obvious answer is royal kansas city yes a royal you just become rich you're just a rich prince overnight well no i was going to go with pirate. That was mine.
Starting point is 00:53:11 Was it pirate? Yeah. No way. We've been doing this show together way too long. Of course you want to be a pirate. Yeah. Like some of some of these that are like animals of some sort, wildlife of some sort. Right.
Starting point is 00:53:26 Like I could talk I could talk myself into, you know, being a stingray like for a day. A tiger. Yeah. But I have to spend the rest of my life as a damn tiger. Yeah, that's a bit of a big commitment. I do, I do have a stingray like for a day. soft spot for for the birds so you know like like the cardinal the jay the orio like i i think i would dig being a bird for about a week supposed to pick being a piece of laundry am i supposed to be a white
Starting point is 00:53:52 sock for the rest of my goddamn life that i'm supposed to stay white you never become a red sock oh i can't i can't even be a nice pair of black socks and go out for an elegant night on the town i have to always be a white two sock that's awful what the hell is the rocky is that just the mountain i don't know yeah you just be any of these things the rocky mountains at that point i don't want to be a national or a yankee that's for sure those both seem like bad things in two thousand and twenty four and i definitely you know what a guardian because i could be a guardian of the galaxy and that's yeah i guess that works no because see a guardian in this case is just a big statue on a bridge and that doesn't seem like a good life either i mean you're already a dad so poddre i'm i'm i'm already the embodiment of the dad right i had to take up
Starting point is 00:54:34 my car just want to like keep it as it is i guess you you'd just say podres i feel like giant is the right call like I'm just a giant right I'll squish everybody else like that seems I don't know I'm still going with pirate I want to be a pirate yeah I think I think pirate be a Texas ranger that's a terrible job what would a what would a met be Tanner ask a good question would that just be like a New Yorker like would you yeah because the original name was a metropolitan yeah which means you're just a the fancy man about town right yeah going to have a dasheries and whatnot right hey I got a new suit here I got a Yeah, that's boring.
Starting point is 00:55:11 Me and my lady going down to the show tonight. Minnesota. The twins? What, are we just the carries? That actually seems pretty fun. Those guys have a great time. Yeah, like, do I get like a new, like a twin? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:23 I didn't have that I haven't been missing out on my entire life. Yeah, I was just going to bring up angels. Like, I mean, that doesn't necessarily mean you're, you're dead, right? I mean, it's like an alternate existence that depending on how you feel about angels could actually be quite. Me and this man have to have a conversation after the show is over about what an angel is. Apparently, I thought we could all agree on that. I didn't think that was a controversial topic, but anyway, yeah, definitely. I'm still leaning Mariner or Pirate. That's the boat job seems like a fun job. That's, that's where I'm going, but is reds? Like, you're just the color reds, like,
Starting point is 00:55:59 you're just the color red. You're just a grand. That's what you are. Just sitting in with 63 of your other friends in a box all the time, you know. Anyway. Starting point is 00:58:57 They got home kits for that But the mountain is maybe more entice like the Rocky Mountains That's a little more enticing than maybe I originally realized, although I do get cold pretty easily and at elevation, you know, like, like at the bottom of the mountains, you would just be outdoors all the time. The problem is the Rocky Mountains. I mean, they've, like, there's a lot of 14ers in the Rocky Mountains. Like, I think around the one, you know, the foothills, we'd be good.
Starting point is 00:59:26 But, but my head at 14,000 feet, yeah, my face would just be completely frozen off at that point. Yeah.
