Well, we know they're very good at content creation,
but did the guys over at John Boy fix MLB realignment?
We're going to talk about that,
as well as preview this weekend series
with the Boston Red Sox and more.
Don't you go anywhere?
We're starting in 30 seconds.
Another edition of the BHNX Diamondbacks podcast live
from Studio K in beautiful downtown Phoenix, Arizona.
My name is Derek Montia,
occasionally known as your mayor, VHMX.
Happy to have you guys joining us on a Thursday.
It's a Diamondbacks off day.
but we don't have any days off around here.
Damon Dogg, who is on the ones and twos,
literally has no days off around here.
This man's working seven days a week.
He's got Cardinals coverage.
He's got U of A.
He's got us.
He's got me to deal with, more importantly.
So this man deserves a raise.
Sports!
Sports!
We love it around here.
Inject it into our veins.
Well, of course, this show is brought to you
by our friends at Bet365 and Game Time.
Go download the Bet365 app right now.
Use our code of PHS
next 365 when you sign up you'll get yourself some bonus bets for following a few easy steps and over at
game time use our code of phnx you will get $20 off your first purchase great to have you guys here
happy Thursday to you all it is a dreary day here in phoenix arizona and you know we love that
around here we love hoboobes and we love when it's rainy around here it is a hoodie season by the way
this is the hoodie i was describing that the diamondbacks intended with this with this seam right here
for me to make a decision on whether or not I want this to be a long sleeve or short sleeve hoodie.
And I still definitely will never cut into a piece of clothing that isn't pro wrestling related.
That's for sure.
But I wanted to remind you guys, of course, that this month, the month of September for us here at PH&X in All City is all about Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
And of course, that's what that donate button you see on your screen on YouTube is all about right here.
It's Big Brothers, Big Sisters Month here.
and we are supporting this great cause because they deserve it.
They are an amazing organization that does amazing things for the future of our country and our world,
quite frankly.
Help young kids in the valley and throughout the state get mentorship they need by simply hitting
the donate button right here on YouTube.
Anything helps.
It doesn't matter if it's a dollar, a quarter, anything helps as we push for our all-city
goal of $50,000 raised this month.
Again, help support the great work Big Brothers, Big Sister does in our time.
community by hitting the donate button today. Damon, I often on this show talked about how old
I am. You know that. In fact, Killarex was here. He would say my stupid beard isn't teal. It's just
gray and I'm just an old, old man. But I will say that there's nothing that's cooler in this life
than having an impact on a young person that you mentored through a program similar to what
big brothers and big sisters does and have them grow up to be an adult who then find you on social
media and thanks you for the time that you put in and the impact you had on their life. And again,
sometimes for us, it's just, you know, a couple of weekends hanging out with some really cool
kids that are in need, but you can also volunteer your time. Don't forget that and become a big
yourself. So make sure to check out everything that amazing organization is doing and donate. Please.
Like I said, we appreciate the super chats. As always, we will read all of your stuff this month regardless.
but if you go ahead and donate, we'll appreciate that so much more. Of course,
shout out to Elizabeth, aka Zabe. She says Ski-E, and you deserve raises and naps.
See, those are the kind of comments that I will happily read anytime, and I know Damon will as well.
Just to recap, what just happened for the Diamondbacks, they did win the series in case you missed it against the Rangers by score, or by two games to one, I should say.
They win the finale by blanking the Rangers there. The D-backs have won four straight home series.
including that series against the Rangers.
They won against Reds, Guardians, and Rockies.
They've won or split five straight series,
and they've won seven out of their last 10 series.
So the Diamondbacks have done a good job, maybe not sweeping,
but they've done a good job of at least getting, you know, the series wins.
And overall, the Diamondbacks here outscored the Texas Rangers in the series
by a very, very slight margin, a very small score.
12 to 10 here for a three-game set.
They hit four home runs to the Rangers two.
they were five for 16 with runners in scoring position great starting pitching
ERA for the Diamondbacks there 2.45 amazing relief pitching ERA 3.72 I know the bullpen is still
a dumpster fire but let's give credit where credit is due the guys that are there have done their
job and they've done a good job at getting this relief pitching ERA to look better. The
Diamondbacks do not have the worst bullpen ERA or the second worst or the third worst anymore.
It's it's like a four two ERA for the for the for the for the
the bullpen and that can that's considering all the bad performances that they've had this season so
good good job of turning things around uh this was the diamond backs third win this season with three
or fewer hits in a game they won that one on june first against the nationals that was also
basically a nothing score uh and with three hits on april second against the yankees it's their
sixth win this season with only uh with at most one extra base hit uh in a game and the dbacks have
won six out of the last eight games since August 27th, 10 out of their last 15, and they recorded
their ninth shutout. So again, good job in the series. Good job by starting pitching there with
Zach Gallen having an outstanding performance in the finale and the bullpen, getting the job done
there as well. But let's take a look at their upcoming opponent this weekend. The Diamondbacks
face off starting tomorrow with the Boston Red Sox, a big series. Going to be a lot of
obnoxious Red Soxies fans out of Chase Field. So of course, as always, we need to be.
you. We need your support. We need you out
there cheering for this team. They
have a record, and when I say this team, I mean the Diamondbacks.
You know what I meant by that. Don't
turn it around on me. The Red Sox have a record of
78 and 63 this season. They have a plus
101 run differential. They are
7 and 3 in their last 10, so they're kind of
on a roll. They have a rookie that's been
doing some big things there.
They have Roman Anthony,
I believe is his name.
Again, this is another team that when I see
they're starting pitching ERA and relief pitching
the Roman Empire, Derek.
The Roman Empire.
They have already extended him, and that's a smart move, much like what the Diamondbacks
did, you know, with Corbyn, right?
But starting pitching ERA 3.94, 11th Major League Baseball 3.43 relief
pitching ERA.
So excellent, excellent bullpen for the Red Sox.
And yeah, we could, we would love to, we would love to see that.
We would love to see our bullpen ERA like a whole run lower than what it currently is.
The Red Sox have 15 outs above average, which is ninth in Major League Baseball.
their OPS there,
751, 7th best
in Major League Baseball.
So a very well-rounded team here
from the Boston Red Sox
and a tough opponent
that they themselves are currently,
I believe, in third place
in their division
with a 78 and 63 record
behind the Yankees
and behind the Toronto Blue Jays,
if I'm not mistaken.
I think the Blue Jays might still have
the best record in the American League.
Yes, they just,
that's the Brewers, Blue Jays matchup
just previews.
the two best records in baseball.
And that certainly will be the World Series, right?
Brewer's Blue Jays?
That's how they drew it up.
Elizabeth, yes, I do believe Roman Anthony is injured.
So we just, you know, sometimes you just got to talk about him.
It doesn't mean they're going to have an impact in the series.
It's clear that he's not playing.
The Diamondbacks could use all the help they can get in this series
against the Boston Red Sox.
And they have Eduardo Rodriguez starting in game one for them against
Pace and Toll.
Hello, B.
It's good to see you there in the chat.
Let's take a look at the probable pitchers for this series.
Of course, the Diamondbacks have the guys.
I mean, Brandon fought, Ryan Nelson, you don't hate seeing those guys in there, right?
But again, Erod is another, it's another case of what are you going to get out of
Eduardo Rodriguez.
He still has a bad ERA.
Brandon Fott still has a pretty terrible ERA himself.
Again, those back-to-back starts where neither guy made it out of the third inning.
really didn't help their season at all.
Erod is 6 and 8 with a 5.40 ERA.
He is going up against Payson Toll,
who just made his first start for the Red Sox.
He has eight strikeouts this season and a 3.38 ERA.
Lucas Gialito is back, apparently.
We didn't know.
This is new information to us.
He's 10 and 2 this year with a 3.38 ERA
and 105 strikeouts for the Sox.
We got Brandon Fott here, again,
with his 12 wins this season, but is also his very, very, very bad ERA at 5.33.
He has 122 strikeouts.
And again, Brandon Foughts, ERA is greatly impacted by two bad starts, but Brandon Fought has not been consistent as of late for this team.
Ryan Nelson, meanwhile, still probably the Diamondback's best starter.
I don't know.
Zach Gallen is pitching out of his mind right now.
so he probably gets that crown, gets that title back.
But Ryan Nelson continues to be excellent.
7 and 3.5s this season, 3.57 ERA for him and 115 strikeouts.
He's going up against Brian Bello, who is 11 and 6, a 3.07 ERA for the Red Sox,
112 strikeouts this year, and a guy who I can't say his name without thinking of the
SNL character, Brian Fellows.
But hey, well, that's just because, once again, I'm old.
The Diamondbacks, though, they do match up here with the Red Sox during a time where it's probably more pivotal in the Red Sox season than it is the Diamondback season.
So they have a chance not only to play spoiler once again, but to remain hot and continue winning series like they've done up to this point.
The Diamondbacks have done a great job at battling in a lot of these series.
Staying in games, of course, even in that Rangers series, the only win the Rangers had did come in extra innings.
and you felt like the Diamondbacks kind of let that one slip away from them.
They could have possibly S-worded that one.
I don't know.
We're starting a new series,
so I feel like I shouldn't say the S-word at all
and start things off on a bad foot.
And again, I know there might not be playing for much,
but to play spoiler, it's pretty fun,
and to also just keep your head down at this point of the season
and try to win every series like they've been doing so far since the trade deadline
really makes you feel like, you know,
the Diamondbacks could make up some ground.
right can't control what the other teams are doing unfortunately because you do not play the Mets and you do not play the Reds the rest of the season you do play the San Francisco Giants six times though and that's that's going to be huge for them as well but they cannot look past this Boston Red Sox team it's a very good team the Diamondbacks have their work cut out for them this weekend at Chase Field like I said there's also going to be a ton of people with terrible accents in that building cheering on their socks. Sacks? Sacks. Sacks.
I don't know.
I'm trying to do my best, but on the other side of this break.
Tight rope there.
Yeah, no, yeah, it's a tight rope there.
But we have been complaining, obviously.
We've been discussing MLB realignment.
I have been complaining about the way that next season is kind of broken down.
It's making me play investigator.
I'm wondering about that two-game series with the Padres still if that's going to be in Mexico City.
If Damon and I have to go start, I mean, I have my passport.
Damon is your passport up to date?
Like, we have to make sure that we are all ducks in a row.
It's about to expire, but Derek, I'm not going to lie to you.
Last night, I follow somebody on Instagram who was in Mexico City.
I mean, we need to go.
We need, I need to be there.
I mean, I'm not, you're not wrong.
You're not wrong.
I want to go there.
We'll probably have very bad coverage of the series because Damon and I will be way too busy
staying up late and partying, but the vlog will be amazing.
The vlog will be outstanding.
So make sure to keep it locked here for that.
But speaking of things on YouTube, speaking of next year's schedule and me hating it,
our friends over at John Boy, Jimmy, more importantly, may have fixed MLB.
And I cannot believe how simple it was.
But his plan so far is the best that I've heard for scheduling an MLB of realignment.
I'm not going to try to steal his shine too much.
I want you to go watch his video.
So we'll put that in the link.
So go watch that first.
I'm not going to steal all of his.
ideas, but I think they're great. So we have to talk about them. And we're going to do that on the other
side of this break. Don't you go anywhere? You're watching the pH and X Diamondback show.
Well, of course, whatever the moment, it is never ordinary at Bet365. And you guys know what time it is.

of the outcome.
So do not miss out on that last NFL season.
Both money lines were paid out four times because of Bet365's early payout offer.

And I couldn't believe the variety, Damon.
I couldn't believe the amount of flavors.
I couldn't believe.
I couldn't wait to dive into the box like Scrooge McDuck diving into his money bin.
I just wanted to jump into box and swim around, but all sorts of wonderful flavors.
Once again reminding us that the folks over at Pure Edibles not only make gummies,
but they make a wide variety of candies for you to try with all sorts of effects.

All right.
Well, we got a chat.
We got some things going on in the chat.
And I just wanted to address this because as, as Damon would attest to,
we didn't think that bees.
was a real person simply because of like how great of a guy bees is right damon i mean that's
the best way to describe yeah i mean you think he's an ai generated program here just to kind of get our
back against tory haters and to you know defend sweet sweet damon dog and make sure that papa
derrick doesn't get uh you know have the villagers come after him right so but we did we met up
with bees at our uh hila river draft party slash cardinals residency night and it was
It was, like, I couldn't even describe how glorious it was.
Yes, as Zab says, bees is so pure.
It was a wonderful experience.
Uplifting, in fact, life-changing.
Oh, something.
It's hard to find pure-hearted people from the internet and apply it to real life.
You know what I mean?
And Bees is one of the good ones for sure.
That's for sure.
But I will tell you, another group of pure-hearted individuals are our friends over at John Boy.
Obviously, Dalton Feeley is part of the PHNX family.
so there's no doubt about Dalton Feeley and his amazing character.
But as you guys know, we're huge fans of our guy Jake over there,
as well as Jimmy, aka John Boy himself.
And I was perusing the internet as I do.
And of course, I never miss out on a John Boy video.
I never missed out on a lip reading video.
I never miss out on anything those guys do.
And I suggest you don't either.
Go subscribe to their channel right now.
Check out their stuff.
It's wherever you get our stuff.
But he had a video where he broke down.
his idea for fixing baseball's realignment.
And I cannot tell you how much I loved this idea.
He got a little crazy with the playoff structure,
but I kind of got on board with it based on his explanations
and how exciting it would make the season.
Now, again, as I said before the break,
we'll have the link to the video in our description.
Make sure to go check that out.
First, give him lots of love and see all of his ideas.
because this is more of a supplemental video to that.
But in his video, he suggested, first of all,
what I have been pounding the drum for for entirely too long.
Every series in Major League Baseball,
based on his realignment fix, would be a three-game series.
Oh, how good does that sound, Damon?
Three-game series for every series,
no more four-game series,
no more weird two-game series
and wondering if it's in Mexico City or not, right?
Three game series.
Except please send us to Mexico City.
Well, that, that's fine.
No, send us for a three game set in Mexico City, not a two game set.
I want to go there for four or five days, not just a weekend.
But what I'll also say is I hate the, I've always kind of hated the idea of even-numbered series.
And because of the way that the scheduling ends up working out, the even-number series just kind of happened whenever.
And sometimes it doesn't make sense.
Sometimes it does.
Sometimes it's to offset a two-game series that they played at a different time.
All of it's dumb and I hate it.
Baseball is based on series, and the three-game series is what baseball has always been kind of has been the core of that idea.
Because one team can win a goddamn three-game series.
That doesn't seem too hard to figure out.
Two-game series they can split.
Four-game series they can split.
I'm not sure if it's a tie.
Nobody wants to see a tie ever in anything regarding sports.
So abolish the four-game series, abolish the two-game series, three-game series, it is.
What I really like is with the addition of the two teams making it 32,
John Boy's idea here was four-eight-game or four-eight-team divisions,
which again gets us out of the hell of being in the NL West with the Dodgers and the Giants and the Padres.
Any other scenario that I've seen so far restricts us to essentially being in that hell
for eternity.
And I just don't want it.
Nor does it feel like when you realign and change the playoffs,
our division's going to really matter anymore.
Sure, you can give the division winner the division.
Sure, but considering that the schedule itself now dictates
that we do not play the other teams in our divisions nearly as often,
it doesn't make sense for there even to be a division.
I know people hate the idea of taking baseball
and making it into a Western conference and an Eastern conference,
essentially. So this fixes that with four eight-game regional divisions. It offers a balanced schedule
would set off days where the American League would have certain off days and the National League would
have certain off days. So there would always be baseball being played, but there would always be off days
built into the schedule. So these teams do not run themselves ragged. They don't have bullpen arms being
exhausted. They don't have to play this game with their minor league system of bringing guys up.
Unless you're in the position Diamondbacks are where the majority,
of your team gets injured. He did reduce the schedule to 156 game schedule. Now, that's not nearly
as many games reduced as I would like, but as we've said in the past, there's no way Major
League Baseball is going to really let you cut the schedule down to 100 games or 82 games or anything
like that. Baseball by nature makes a lot of money by having a lot of games, right? We were,
I was hanging out with my guy Rock and his sister Monica at yesterday's day game.
and quite frankly, you could probably count the amount of people that were at Chase Field yesterday by hand.
At least the ones up in the upper deck, for sure, you could have done that.
So it doesn't really, you know, at times make a whole lot of sense,
especially for organizations like the Diamondbacks that don't sell out every game
and have day games like this to really have the extra schedule or have those additional games.
I don't really feel like the revenue is going to be lost that much by shortening the schedule.
and he's only shortening it by six games.
But then his playoff structure gets a little weird.
He suggests that the first round playoffs
are simply a one-game elimination
involving the two lowest-ranked teams
that make it into the playoffs.
How do you make it into the playoffs?
You make it in by being a first-half winner
or a second-half winner
based on the best overall record in baseball
gets into the playoffs.
Damon.
This solves the problem of teams
like, you know, fizzling out, I guess, on the second half,
but having a great first half and not making it,
it gives teams something to play for up until the halfway point.
And again, it makes it interesting because if you've secured your spot,
you know, there's seating to be worried about
because you don't want to be playing that one game playoff spot,
but you do get a guaranteed spot in the playoffs
for having the best record in baseball at the halfway point.
Thoughts on that particular idea.
Wait, say it one more time because I did get a little confused there.
Yeah, I know. So it's basically in each league and you'd have, you'd have, excuse me,
you have your National League and American League still. So that's still that.
So there are two divisions in the American League, two divisions in the National League.
Each one is an eight-team division, right? So the overall best record in baseball for each side gets a playoff spot.
if you have the best record in baseball at the halfway point of the season, you're in the
playoffs.
And then the second half winner with the best record in baseball also makes the playoffs.
So if you have the best record in baseball at that time, then it could be, you know, obviously
it could be the same team.
So if that's the case, then he had a plan for it to go like to the second team.
Again, go check out his video and watch all that.
But what do you think?
Do you think that that's crazy?
The reason why.
he did this was to structure in a way
where teams have something to play for at all
times and there's never really a time
where teams aren't giving it
their all. So
I don't know. What do you think about that?
Because like I said, he does get a little crazy in the playoffs
but he had good explanations as to why.
And I think one thing that needs
to be said about a long season that's
still even 156 games is
how do you keep fans
engaged more than they currently are?
How do you give teams something
more to play for than they currently
have, especially a team that could be completely out of it in the first half, but then catches
fire in the second half.
However, they're just so far behind in their division that they simply can't make up ground.
So there's ways for this to all work out in a way, right?
Eight teams per league in the playoffs, but a big incentive to win the most games because
of seating.
The first round playoffs would simply be a one game elimination similar to what we had with
the wild card a few years back.
the winner plays a higher-seeded team in the next round and must beat them twice
while the higher-seated team only needs to win one in the next round.
What do you think about?
Like, these are crazy ideas, mostly because we've never really seen this format in baseball
before.
But what he's doing is he's trying to not add extra series to the playoffs to make them
longer.
Obviously, that causes people to lose interest, right?
His theory behind this was when we did have the one game wildcard playoff spot, people were literally taking days off from work to watch that one game because of the importance of that one game.
And you are starting the playoffs with that electricity or you are starting the game, the playoffs with a one game playoff game that people are going to watch because it's just exciting to watch an elimination game right off the bat in the playoffs.
I think I think me and you, here's where our scope is just a little bit different right now, Derek, is.
is you are talking about it from a baseball perspective.
Sure.
And I will always think about it from an Arizona Diamondbacks perspective.
How can they get screwed in this scenario?
In this scenario, you are essentially as, and we talk about it all the time,
the Dodgers almost have a chokehold on the division before each season even starts.
So then you're almost begging to be the lower-seated team.
Right.
Then the Diamondbacks have backs up against the wall every single time they make the playoffs,
where they can get eliminated in one game.
For sure.
Essentially, every time that they make the postseason.
However.
So that's where I'm like, I got to sit here and be like, for my snakes,
I think we, I think we got to do maybe something that doesn't take away the benefits of baseball
postseason benefiting lower seeded teams.
No, that's fair.
That's fair.
However, how many times have the Diamondbacks, meanwhile, it had a great run to start the season,
and then the Dodgers just caught up and passed them, right?
the Diamondbacks could essentially start off really hot,
hypothetically in a season,
and they could secure their playoff spot right there at the halfway point of the year
and not need to worry about that fizzling out that has occurred in the past
or having those losses.
But I agree with you.
I agree with you.
However, there also is the thing to be said that with the scheduling this way,
you're not going to have, teams are going to have regular off days,
so you're not going to have them get run ragged the way that they currently do.
And you also have the idea here that the Diamondbacks,
you know, could, you know, secure a little bit higher of a spot just with having a higher record.
Like, I mean, the Diamondbacks have at times had a better record than other teams that made the playoffs,
but then they didn't get in or, you know, we'll don't even talk about the 89 win season.
But I do think that there's things here that would be beneficial for the Diamondbacks,
especially getting out of a division that solely features the Dodgers, you know.
I, well, that's very true.
I guess my, my thing is more so that, like, if you're going to be able to.
going to have baseball benefit the big market teams from a cap standpoint and a salary standpoint
and, you know, acquiring superstar players.
Yeah.
Then I need the postseason to be beneficial to the smaller market teams and everybody just
by the nature of baseball because if then we're going to give the higher seated teams the benefits
of being higher seated too, then to me it's just going to we're going to see Dodgers,
Phillies, maybe Cubs.
then Astros, Yankees, Red Sox, like, it's just going to be the same teams every single year.
And that's not a sport that I want to watch.
We just were talking about not too long ago that the layoff isn't great for teams.
And then last playoff, last postseason, they completely obliterated that idea that the, you know,
teams with a buy are at a disadvantage, right?
But it could go either way, right?
You never know.
being the higher seed does, I mean, in this scenario, it does get you something.
And that's something that he was trying to fix is that much,
one of Jesse's biggest complaints with the playoffs is that just get in and then you
have a shot.
And we love that because with the Diamondbacks kind of being an underdog.
And we love that because we know that they can get in with that final wildcard spot, right?
Deep down, deep down the D back fan and Jesse that he'll never escape.
Oh, he loves it.
He's like, yes, this is good for us.
I think he, he, like, morally from like a sporting perspective is like,
it should probably be changed.
And I actually agree with that.
But I will never ever stop bleeding, you know, Sedona Red and teal.
And so my mind just only works.
I'm literally only working teal from my face right now, David.
Literally.
I mean, there's literally still blue dye on my head.
Look at your outfit today, Derek.
Look at this.
Look at this.
I do.
I bleed.
You're Mr. Dback.
I do.
But what I will say.
about this is that there has to be things that make sense in a sport. And the 162 game season
doesn't make sense when all it gets you is if you have one of the two best records in your league,
you get a buy. That's crazy. And that makes it to, it makes a lot of the season insignificant.
I know it does in the seating and for those top teams, but it really doesn't make a lot of sense for
the rest of the teams in baseball. It doesn't keep over 50% of the fan bases interested in the playoff race
or what's going on.
And quite frankly, baseball has made a lot of changes recently.
And I feel like all of those changes have been for the better.
People seem to be enjoying the game more.
The pace of the game is better.
Nobody's complaining about the pitch clock,
even though I'm sure there will be a documentary
or some sort of report that comes out in future years
that says the pitch clock is the reason why so many injuries started happening
to pitchers.
I'm still waiting for that to inevitably happen.
However, what I will say is that the,
overall concept here is that you have to try to make this long of a season matter. And that's what
John Boy tried to fix with this. And I like his idea. It was radical, though. It took, like I said,
I didn't really like it much myself when I first saw it. I did really like his idea for everything
else. I liked his idea for the four 18 divisions. I like the three game series. I'm a huge fan of that.
I like the off days being built into the schedule. I like the 156 game schedule. I feel like
Off days is a big thing.
At least it's a bit of a concession when it comes to the idea of lowering this ridiculous season, the schedule that baseball has, right?
But what I will say, Derek, is the purest in me, like, almost thinks that, like, the pennant system is the best.
Because that, that almost reminds me of in, like, you know, I think baseball, and it's so indicative of America in general as a country where they just, really what they, what baseball wants is to compete,
financially with the NFL, with the NBA, with the NHL, right, and have this scope and grasp
on the country.
And that's why they continue to add playoff teams, wild card teams.
We have more playoff games because that's more money for the league.
Where in reality, like, there's something to be said about the tradition of it and sticking
to that.
Like, you know, I think of like the Premier League where the championship is not won from the
season by even in a tournament style bracket.
It's won by having the most points in the league over the course of 38 games.
And that's kind of like the pennant system where it's like the best team in the AL versus
the best team in the NL and they play each other.
Like that, to me, that's a really cool concept.
And I understand the idea of trying to get back to a semblance of that.
But in making the season matter, but totally.
Like I, it doesn't benefit the Diamondbacks.
at all. So that's where I'm like, no, please don't do that. Like even if even if I do think that maybe
it's better for the game of baseball in general. But if we go backwards, Damon, right? We got to
go backwards to playing our own division a hundred of the 162 games of the season. Do you want that?
No. Do you want that? Not not with it. Not with it if the Padres are just going to be good every year now.
Right. And I mean, I do agree with what Mighty Schumann says here in the comment. He says, isn't the point of
having so many games in a season and games per series to eliminate randomness,
streakiness to an extent.
To an extent.
But the true point of the 162 game season was that you only played your league.
You never played the opposite league.
So it was truly decided by you playing your own inner league, interleague, that's the wrong
term.
That shouldn't be your own division and your own league.
In fact, you barely played the teams outside of your particular league when they decided
to make this this way.
In fact, I don't even think,
like you basically played your own division.
So again, the reason why it made sense
is because you could make up ground.
If you got better than the division,
the top team in your division,
then you could play enough games against them
where those wins versus the losses
would impact your ranking and you could pass them.
Now it's much harder to do that.
Like I said earlier when we were talking about the wild card situation
with the Diamondbacks,
they don't play the Mets, they don't play the red,
so they can't improve their position by beating those teams, causing them to lose and giving themselves wins.
That was so much part, that was a huge part of the 162 games season.
And it was a big reason why you could actually make up ground theoretically.
Usually it had to happen because of an injury or something causing one of the top teams, you know, to start losing games.
But based on that happening, you could turn things around quickly.
But I will agree.
Streakiness, randomness, it's, I mean, it's all.
it's always going to be there and it's always going to be based on your definition of what's
streaky what's random what's you know who's a contender who's not a contender right the
way they talk about the milwaukee brewers and the toronto blue jays being the having the best
records in baseball kind of makes me sick because they they they talk down about them you know like like
like oh look at this the with the brewers it's always like oh look at the brewer's payroll and where
they are look as small market team can have the best like yeah that's nothing new we've always known a small
market team could have the best record in baseball. And it's crazy that you keep acting like this
because baseball is baseball. Injuries happen, things happen. Guys get hot. Superstars develop
overnight. A rookie or a young guy. Look at Blaze Alexander. You know, at one moment, he's not
able to produce offensively the next moment he's out here stealing snakes and asking for Sour Patch kids
in return. Who does he think he is? Who the hell does he think he is? But anyway, shout out to John Boy.
he did a great job. Like I said, go check out that video. I feel like the craziest part about it is,
it was kind of a simple fix. I feel like he got into the weeds a little bit with the playoffs,
but I like what he did. That's where things got a little complicated, but I think with some explanation
in time, people could absolutely get on board with that. But I think everybody could probably
get on board with a lot of his ideas, including shortening the season, the four 18 divisions,
and three game series for every series. We all want to see a win. We all want to determine.
and who's the better team every time a team plays another team.
So let's figure things out and let's get it done.
But we are going to take a quick break.
On the other side of this break, we are going to throw it back once again.

Derek, what would you say your game day vibe is?
My game day vibe is, first of all, extraordinary.
That's what I would say off the charts.
First of all, it's like, look at what you're wearing right now.
My game day vibe is usually very matching.
So usually I match my beard color to my hat.
and even my socks.
So there's that.
But that's because...
You are Mr. Matching.
I am Mr. Matching for sure.
But one thing I do know is that it's Throwback Thursday around here.
And you know every throwback Thursday we talk about significant things that happen in Diamondbacks history.
In fact, on this day, this exact day, we had some pretty significant things happen in Diamondback's history.
On September 4th, 1998, the year of our birth, the year that...
we came into this world.
With a 3-1 win over the Houston Astros, the Diamondbacks had their seventh consecutive
victory, equalling the longest winning streak by any expansion team in history in their
first season.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
We've been good since the start.
What can I say?
Also, on this day, in 2017, a man who I at one time fell in love with, I think we all fell in
with J.D. Martinez
set, as you may remember,
a club record with four home runs
on September 4th against the Dodgers.
He was the 18th player
in Major League history to accomplish that feat.
Obviously, we had Gino do that this year
with his four home run game.
September 5th, 2001,
Kurt Schilling became the D-Back's
first ever 20-game winner
doing it before Randy Johnson.
However, Randy Johnson did have
a 20-win season.
season and he went on to have a 21 season the following season. And on this day in 2002,
Randy Johnson tossed a three-hitter and moved past Bert Blyleven into fourth place on all-time
strikeout list. It also became Randy Johnson's 20th win of the season, making him and shilling
the only the sixth pair of teammates since 1950 to win 20 games each in back-to-back seasons.
then boys were good.
Then boys were good.
That's why when I talked about the Diamondbacks
being the fastest team to ever get to,
what did I call it, 25th,000th,
I couldn't figure out how to say that that day,
25,000 strikeouts.
Those two guys played a big part in that.
Like I said, they probably account
for like 20,000 of the 25,000 strikeouts.
On September 6, 2006,
a very important Derek came into our life.
No, not me.
President Rich Dozer,
of the Diamondbacks announced his intention to resign at the end of the season,
and he would be replaced by executive vice president,
Eric Hall.
And I got to say, not only on a personal level,
do I love Derek Hall,
and I think he's just a great guy,
but I think that, you know,
what he's done for this team and the way that he has worked so hard
to kind of weave the Diamondbacks into the community here and into the valley
has been extraordinary.
It's not an easy thing to do,
especially with a franchise that has struggled at times,
you know, to keep up with the competition in National League West
and to do some of the things the Diamondbacks have done.
Luckily, we still have that championship trophy
to always kind of look over at and be like,
well, we got one of those.
So, you know, you know?
Scott knows what I'm talking about.
That's not a guy.
All right.
On September 1st, 2008, Stephen Drew hit for the cycle.
He was the third in club history
and the first ever to do it at Chase Field.
On September 2nd, 2020,
Zach Gallen set the record in Major League Baseball
for the most starts to open a career
with three or fewer runs allowed.
There's something to be said about what Zach Gallen did
out of the gate,
essentially as a rookie that we traded Jazz Chisholm for
and became a part of this starting rotation.
Zach set the bar very high in a similar way
that the Diamondbacks winning the World Series so early,
set a high bar.
bar, right? Like, it's just one of those things that, again, there wasn't a gradual, you know,
gradual climb to success. This guy came out and just gave the Diamondbacks a chance to win in
every single one of his first 23 straight starts. Pretty cool thing. And again, why I think we all
still deep down inside hold Zach in very high regard and hope that not only does he kind of rebound here in
his career, but maybe, maybe he can do it with this Arizona Diamondbacks team that he has been
with for a while now. I mean, again, that's right. That's, that's, uh, going back a considerable portion
of his career has been his entire career, pretty much, outside of a few things, starts with the Marlins
has been with the Diamondbacks. Uh, and last, but not least on September 7th,
2023, the D-backs accumulated a hundred and thirty-eight stolen bases. No, not in a single game.
That would have been some sort of record. Uh, but they did end up with 160,
66 total in 2023.
The 138 bases, though, that they stole as of September 7th in
2023 set the club record.
And then they went on to add on like 30 more stolen bases.
So those were good times.
A lot of chaos was created during that stretch.
And man, kind of miss that chaos being created.
Am I right?
That would be nice, Derek.
It would be nice.
But remember, Corby and Carroll just hits dingers now.
So he doesn't really need to like get on bases often.
just matches ball. Corbyn has been stealing more bases, though, I will say. And I also, part of that
chaos for me at least, in that chaos ball mantra is playing the level of defense that the
Diamondbacks have shown in recent games. And it's, it's kind of the combo of that elite
defense times chaos on the base paths. Like, that's just a team that plays winning baseball. And we're
seeing it more and more and more right now. I miss Mighty Schumann's question. I'm just taking a step
backward he had asked, how would the trade deadline work in a two-part season? That's a great question.
I do think that there is a thought that they still don't like where the trade deadline is currently
at and maybe could be moved up some. I don't know. Maybe we move it up to June. Maybe that's too
early. I don't know. But again, there's some things to be worked out there for sure. And I think John
boy addressed that as well. Again, it's not my idea. I'm just stealing his and reiterate.
regurgitating it on the show. It's just a great idea. Sometimes you've got to get props
when someone comes up with a great idea, especially to fix baseball. But what we're going to do is
take a quick break. And then when we come back, we're going to take a trip down to the snake farm
to be thankful that Tristan English returned to this team after being designated for assignment
and to check in on A.J. Vukovic, who has been doing some big things for the Reno Aces. So don't you

All right. Ernesto makes a really good point in the chat, Damon.
I think one that you would agree with.
He said, realignment-wise,
I am in favor of everything that directly benefits the Diamondbacks.
I am staunchly against anything that hurts their chances.
Yes, correct.
is literally my entire thought process on every single change in baseball, including
why Shohei Otani belongs behind bars.
Yeah, there it is.
There it is.
I knew you would find a way to fit it in.
And quite frankly, kudos to you, sir.
Well, of course, the future of this team still runs through Snake Farm.
So let's take a trip down and see how some of the prospects have been doing for the Arizona
Diamondbacks.
One name that I've seen come up time and time again as of late is A.J. Vukovic outfielders.
for the Reno Aces. He has been on a roll. After having a really strong August, he went two for five
the other night with a two runs single and Tuesday's game for the Aces. The 24-year-old has been
on quite a tear. He's now writing a 12 game on base streak, hitting 435 over that stretch with two doubles,
three home runs, 11 RBI, and nine walks during that streak, currently averaging 281 with an 857 OPS on the
season, 20 home runs, and 71 RBI.
Obviously, a lot of that has come lately.
Another name that I just cannot believe that the Diamondbacks designated for assignment
was Tristan English.
In fact, this came right after the last time we spoke about English, so I hope I'm not
cursing him again further.
But the Diamondbacks did designate him for assignment.
He did clear waivers, and he came back to this team.
And then he comes back, and he homers in Tuesday's opener, and then just stayed
hot again on Wednesday going three for four with three singles.
And again, I don't know exactly maybe, maybe, you know, management wise, front office wise,
maybe the idea here is that they knew there was a good chance that Tristan English being
DFA'd would come back to the Diamondbacks teams.
It's similar to the Rule 5 draft when they don't protect certain guys and you kind of get
upset about it and you wonder why they did that.
And then maybe they even get drafted in the Rule 5 draft, but then they end up coming back.
to the team because essentially the team that picked them up could not keep them on a major league roster for the entire season.
So maybe deep down inside the Diamondback's front office new Tristan English wasn't, you know, was going to clear waivers and was going to come back to this team.
It just I agree with Chris our Den mom.
She says, I really like Tristan and I feel like I do too.
I feel like I have kind of, you know, been keeping an eye on him.
And he's a guy that was in the Diamondback system, you know, for a bit.
and it felt like he was really starting to put things together for the Aces.
In 80 games this season for Reno, he's hitting 324, 369, 527 with 13 home runs and 71 RBI himself.
So again, he's been having a great season for the Aces.
And with the uncertainty at first base, it just doesn't seem like now would be the right time
for the Diamondbacks to be limiting themselves on options when those guys are hitting 320 plus in Reno.
But it's Reno, Damon, and nothing is real there.
And none of those numbers are real.
It's like Junior Caminero hitting 40 home runs in that minor league ballpark in Tampa.
Is that real?
No.
No, it's not.
But it counts.
And so does this.
So it's something to at least, you know, consider here.
Last but not at least, of course, we take a look at our snake farm graphic.
Lou James Groover.
He tallied up a career best five hit game going five for five on August 17th for the
Zotties. That's impressive. Never had a season below with a WRC plus below 100. Always,
always an above league average player. And so far this year in AA has an 803 OPS, a 301 average.
He has 10 home runs. He has an 82% contact percentage, Damon, and 52 RBI. I got high hopes for
Lou James. I still want to call him Gino. Me too. But I think it's
Because we just miss our Gino.
Yeah.
So it's like, oh my God, we have another Gino who plays third base.
And Bert, you know, Bert's going to be so heartbroken when he finds out that Gino changed his name back to Lou James and isn't going.
He might still do that we know it's Gino.
I know.
Just to keep it going.
Yeah, he's going to find a way.
We'll never escape it.
We, we, should we?
Do we deserve to escape it?
Isn't it a nightmare that we should live in for the rest of our lives?
I'm just saying.
Speaking of the sod poodles, they turned their first triple play in team history last night.
and our guy Groover was a part of it.
DeBacks Prospect Groover,
Gene Walters and Ben McLaughlin
spin the old 5-4-3 triple play
just as they drew it up to escape a jam
and get themselves out of it.
Again, a lot of fun things happening
with the minor league system for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
And quite frankly, that is where they're going to need to build from
going forward in the future.
I was asked the other day about arms
and quite frankly,
Cole Drake, as it stands right now,
who the Diamondbacks just received in the Merrill Kelly trade,
quite frankly, is the only minor leaguer I can see that's ready.
I still have very high hopes about a few other pitchers,
but based on their current development,
I'm not certain about those guys being ready for the 2026 season,
especially when the Diamondbacks need them.
Diamondbacks are going to need arms to begin the 2026 season.
And it's going to be an uphill battle right away.
I'm excited to see what this team does in free agency during this off season to aid in this entire situation.
And again, you know, at this point, it would be what, Erod's final season with the team next year.
So there's one guy who honestly hasn't lived up to his contract, but could be vital for this team come the beginning of 2026.
He's going to be vital for this team in this start tomorrow night.
against Boston Red Sox. Hopefully he can get the Diamondbacks started on a good, good foot for that
series. We don't need any more of those less than three inning outings from Erod for sure, or branded
font, to name a few. But we do match up there with the Red Sox starting tomorrow. We will,
I will be out there. So make sure if you guys are out there, you, uh, shoot me, shoot me a message,
say hi. I had a lot of great people say hi to me at the game the other day. And I was a bit overwhelmed with
how nice everybody was being.
I couldn't believe it, Damon, a lot of,
a lot of our friends out at the ballpark.
And it's, again, great to see you guys out there.
The Diamondbacks need that support,
especially against any American League East team
that isn't the Tampa Bay race.
It's amazing how nice everybody is in person, Derek,
based off of just this line of business.
Oh, yeah, we were already giving bees his flowers, right?
But yes, no, that's very true.
Every single person in the chat right now has been glorious.
I think that's typically not true though.
Yeah, that's typically not.
We have some bad apples.
That's fine.
We all know who they are.
That's fine.
You know what?
Those bad apples, they know who they are too, right?
We know who they are and they know who they are.
But shout out to all of you guys, of course.
Like I said, appreciate you guys being here.
Make sure to keep it locked right here to PHNX.
We did have some more up on our Twitter account, including we'll bring
that diamond mine to you on cold drake so keep your eyes peeled for that damon and i will be working on that
this afternoon we also have that's a christmas promise that's a christmas promise for sure uh we also have
uh the entire ceremony from yesterday's hb uh hb 2704 signing ceremony so if you haven't had a chance
to check that out to hear the wonderful things that derrick hall had to say about this team about this
fan base uh governor katie hobbs talk about how we need a better hback system and
I mean, if you run on a platform politically of giving me more AC at Chase Field,
I will vote for you every single time.
You have my vote every single time.
If you vote on a platform of that and getting the Diamondbacks out of a division with the Los Angeles Dodgers,
you have mine and Damon's votes regardless of your economic policies or anything else
in the way you're going to run the government.
So, but anyway, we do appreciate you guys so much for stopping by.
We will be back tomorrow night with another postgame show after that first.
first game of the Red Sox series.
So keep it locked right here.
Come on back.
We'll have stuff from the clubhouse.
And of course, hopefully we'll be talking about another Diamondbacks win.
Another Friday night with our favorite people in the world, Derek.
That's how I choose to look at it.
That's true.
Are you talking about the drunk people from the Valley Bar next door?
No, you're not.
You're meeting the people in the chat.
Of course.
Yeah.
Our closest friends and family.
Our blood brothers and sisters.
I do see Zabe more than I see my own brothers.
So that's fair.
I talk to her more than at least I talk to my own brothers.
100%.
I mean,
this team is playing some surprisingly good baseball right now, Derek.
Let's keep it rolling.
Let's get another series victory against a good Red Sox team.
I really do feel like this team finishing above 500 is very much, very much in the cards.
It is.
The wild card a lot tougher.
Need a lot more help.
There's, yeah.
We need a lot more help.
You're right about that.
We need two teams to kind of completely fall apart.
And you never know because it's baseball.
And it's the Mets and it's the Reds.
It is the Mets and the Reds.
I just say it's those two teams.
So if there was anybody you could hope to collapse that would collapse, it's the New York Mets.
Yeah.
And quietly, I think Yoshi said this yesterday.
The Padres playing some bad ball right now.
Just saying.
Bad ball.
But also, Giants, can you guys chill out maybe for a second?
Yeah, we definitely need it.
Especially before we play you for six games.
Stop being so good.
No, like for real?
Can you guys relax?
Seriously.
It's you're like you're scaring people.
Well,
follow us on Twitter.
I'm at KV underscore K-Mad with a K.
Of course,
Damon is at Damon Dog with a DAWG.
Shane Deef,
who's banging the drum or banging the hammer on the wall next door.
He's at Shane Deaf,
if you want to yell at him
for making noise during the show.
I don't know if you guys can hear that.
But as always,
our show is at PHNX underscore D-BACs,
but all roads do lead to at pHNX underscore sports
on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
We thank you guys for your time.
We love you.
We appreciate you.
We'll see you tomorrow for another.
post-game show. Until then, behave yourselves and remember kids. Baseball is fun, but it's so much more
fun when you turn a triple play.
