Well, the Arizona Diamondbacks have their last sub 500 opponent ahead of them this weekend,

And I appreciate you guys for showing up.
Thank you guys so much for being here.
Great to see you guys in the chat, Zabe.

Great to have you guys here.
Thank you, Elise, great to see you here.
Mark, even you, Killarex.
Bless you, love you.
And we are here to talk ball today.
Like I said, it's been a, it's been a tough day, but it's also something that we do, right?
We get knocked down.
We get back up.
That's something that this baseball team we have rooted for all year long has done.
They might not ultimately finish the season in a place where they do make the postseason,
but they are trying and fighting every single day, and that's all that we can ask of them.
They did win the series finale by a score of five to three over the Giants, and they avoid getting swept.
Again, the diamondbacks have only been swept five times this season.
So that's something to keep an eye out for.
Is that that diamondbacks, you know, they don't, they don't really completely lose.
They also don't sweep many teams.
We talked about that.
But they have one nine of their last 14 games.
And they're making a run at the postseason, wild card, whatever.
They're at least trying my best to, their best to please me, to keep them in it for me.
Do it? I only care about things for my own selfish reasons, as many of you know. And I just need the Diamondbacks to stay relevant so that I have something to talk to you people about for sure. And of course, we do know that the Diamondbacks take on the Twins this weekend. They will be facing off against their only sub 500 opponent left on their schedule. And they will be facing some very good pitchers in that matchup. We're going to preview that series and talk about those probable pitchers. But first, we have to wonder if the Diamondbacks will be without.
Catele Marte in the series, as many of you know,
Catell was pulled from yesterday's game after getting hit with a ball during his first at bat.
Apparently, Cotel suffered a right foot contusion in yesterday's game.
Thankfully, the X-rays were negative, but, you know, we don't know about Cotel Marte
and how much time he's actually going to miss.
Hello, Maze Devil.
Great to have you guys here.
Thankful for all of you guys.
And Killer X, you never change.
I never want I want killer X to never change for the rest of his entire life.
But again, according to Torilbella, wow, wow, Mark A.
Yeah, I know.
I didn't even acknowledge you, Damon Dog, by the way.
Damon dog is losing his mind over here because I'm just, just, I'm just trying to be nice.
Just try to be nice, Damon.
I just, we all be nice to each other.
Yeah, we do appreciate you, Killer X.
Thank you for showing up day in and day out, my man.
Yeah, yeah.
And Damon Dog, of course, on the ones and two is holding us down.
Appreciate you, brother.
and this is not a great situation for the Diamondbacks
in regards to Catelle Marte potentially being injured.
According to Toro Lavello, like I was saying,
he could be back in the lineup as early as game one of that series with the twins, right?
But to be fair, we need Cotel Marte to beat Cotel Marte.
In order to make the playoffs,
it truly feels like the Diamondbacks need Cotel Marte,
and Corbyn, who went hitless in this three-game series
to kind of step up and help contribute offensively, right?
We know the bullpen can't be trusted.
We know starting pitching has been much better lately, but still inconsistent and still not really trustworthy.
The offense this season, quite frankly, has been the only thing keeping this team afloat.
So, you know, again, this is one of those situations where you definitely feel like you need Cotel Marte, you need Corby and Corman Carroll.
But again, we need the Cotel Marte and Corby that we know and love.
Cotel Marte has not been very good at baseball in his last 20.
two games. Marte is slashing
210, 305, 309
with a 614 OPS
in that span. He has
17 hits and 95 plate appearances
and only four of those hits
are extra base hits. He has two doubles and
two home runs in that span. He also has
9 RBI. So I don't know
exactly if there are
more injuries potentially that
Cotel Marte is
facing. I don't know if in general he's just not right.
We know guys go through slumps,
but Marte honestly has been one of the
consistent offensive players on this team for practically his entire tenure.
Right.
So it feels like there might be something more to this.
Perhaps Marte missing some time due to this injury might help him get right with anything
else that might be ailing him or maybe just the time off can do him some good.
You know, again, what we really need more than anything is a healthy Catal Marte
to try to make a playoff push as we go here into, you know, the final 17 games of the season.
I also say that, you know, you got to give credit where credit is due.
So many of the young guys in the absence of Carol and Marte's production have stepped up.
They have been really good for this team.
And they are a big reason why this team is winning games.
Gabriel Moreno returning, obviously Blaze Alexander's contributions on both sides of the ball,
defensively and offensively.
And even, you know, a vet like Ildamaro Vargas, who now is being asked to step up and take on a bigger role.
And the reason why he is being asked to take a bigger role is because the Diamondbacks have suffered.
yet another catastrophic injury.
No, it's not Catele.
It is Tyler Locklear, our first baseman.
Again, I know Tyler Locklear,
it's had his struggles this season,
but it really did feel like he was putting things together.
Per the broadcast on Tuesday,
Tyler Locklear is now expected to miss the rest of the 2025 season
with left elbow inflammation.
And again, it's just kind of a shame
since Locklear was starting to put things together
at first base and at the dish.
And we were getting a chance,
to truly look at, you know, if Locklear is going to develop, if he could develop into the,
you know, first baseman of the future for this team. And again, it's a big hit because the
diamondbacks do not have much depth when it goes, when it comes to pretty much their entire
roster. I would say that the diamondbacks have outfield or depth, but even with the loss of
Lordus Guriel, you couldn't say that that's the case. You can't say that with the loss of
Lord of Scorreal that the Diamondbacks have any kind of outfield depth at this time.
And it would appear that the Debacks depth chart for first base, not great, guys, not great.
It's down to Ildemarro Vargas, Tim Tawa, and James McCann for the rest of the year.
I've said that if the Diamondbacks could make the postseason after all that they've been through this year,
after trading away their best players at the deadline, after going through the ups and downs,
if you make the playoffs with a depth chart at first base of Ildemarovar Vargas,
Tim Tawa, and James McCann, forget firing Tori Lavallo, Rex, Killa Rex.
I'm giving him manager of the year if he makes it to the playoffs with this particular squad.
Elise is absolutely right.
Jorge Brosa is not Major League Quality outfield depth.
And again, there are other options that the Diamondbacks have.
Some of those options we're seeing in Reno have some, you know, have some success.
I mean, hell, Tristan English, who this team DFA'd, could come back up and still be the answer of first base.
He's still hitting 325 for the Aces.
And I know that it is, it is Reno.
I know it is the PCL.
I'm not going to try to prevent, pretend like his numbers in the PCL or something to, you know, be crazy about.
But it still really much feels like this particular, you know, that his numbers are good offensively and that it should be able to translate to a major league level.
just getting some consistent playing time.
Perhaps English could get that call
and could be that for this team.
But again, I know Killer X is throwing up
puk symbols at the idea of Tori Lovolo being manager of the year.
And I did that just to balance our relationship.
I feel like I said too many nice things about you
early on in this podcast.
And now I needed to come bring it around full circle.
As you know, Killer X, known Tori Lvolo.
You have to keep him on his toes.
You have to keep him on his toes a little bit.
I can't let him just be in here,
have everything be happy with him.
You know, we have to still.
keep our relationship contentious.
But Elise says we need the sweep, which is why we probably won't get it, because that's
what this team does.
And yes, for those of you that may not know, Elise is a known baseball GM.
She just still hasn't confirmed for us which baseball GM she is.
And you're right.
The Diamondbacks do need a sweep.
Is it going to end their season if they don't get a sweep against the twins?
No.
Is it going to end their season if they lose the series to the twins?
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
One game right now, especially against the twins.
your only sub 500 opponent left on your schedule does make a huge difference.
So we cannot pretend like it doesn't,
especially with how close these wildcard standings are right now.
And of course,
Game and Dog,
let's take a look at those wildcard standings.
We have a brand new graphic.
We just decided that we were going to throw the divisional N-Hell West
graphic in the trash can and never show that again,
because why?
What's the point?
We're not fighting for the division at this point.
I'm fairly sure that we have been completely eliminated
from our division contention.
But we still have the wild card,
and there are a lot of teams right now in the wild card hunt.
So, of course, that's a big part.
Here we have the wild card standings where the Padres,
of course, the only team in our division now sit in second place there.
But the team we're really focused on.
I mean, we should still be focused on the Padres.
Looking at this right here,
the teams with a wild card spot are the Cubs at 83 and 63,
the Padres at 79 and 67, and the Mets at 76.
and 70. I know the Mets are an absolute dumpster fire right now. And that is great for us. It's
great for the Reds. It's great for the Giants. But there's a lot of teams still here all within
three and a half games. And quite frankly, if I'm being honest, I would love to see the Padres
lose out the rest of the year because you feel like with the fact that we have three games
against them, we're the final series of the season, that they have the best chance of making
it in if they can control their destiny somewhat. At this point,
point, the Diamondbacks cannot really control their destiny. All they can really do is win games
and keep their fingers crossed that the Mets, Reds, and Giants all lose their games. They do have
three more games against the Giants as our guy, Jacob Franklin here in the chat says,
Giant Series after this one is important. To say the least, Jacob Franklin, to say the least
that this giant series after this one is important, it's pretty much everything. And again,
I don't feel like every series is a must sweep. But,
there has to be some sweeps in there to get the diamondbacks in, right?
Nor can I truly expect that they win every series.
So this road to the postseason is hard and is going to be difficult and most likely
won't lead to the Diamondbacks making the playoffs.
Let's be real about it.
However, this goes back to our question from yesterday.
Do we still scoreboard watch?
Hell, yes, we do.
Do we get excited about every single win, especially if the Diamondbacks can find a way?
to S word the twins, a thousand percent.
There's no reason why one single sweep at this point
mixed with a bad weekend for the Giants and the Mets.
That right there is enough that you feel fairly confident
about the Diamondbacks chances.
They can't really expect to make up all of this ground at once,
but what they can do is make those little, whenever they can,
make those, you know, dig into that lead,
cut that lead down to a few less games
and hope that you can, you know, have something fun happen.
I don't have very much faith in this team should they make the postseason to even do anything.
Look at what I just said about their first base depth.
It is Ildemar Vargas.
It is Tim Tawa.
And no disrespect to Tim Tawa.
He played incredible defense at first base yesterday.
And to be fair, I'm kind of satisfied with the idea of Tim Tawa playing first base for this team.
I felt like his efforts yesterday were incredible.
I felt like offensively he's been consistent at the plane.
and has been performing.
And again, he gets, Tim Tawa gets a lot of, like,
flack thrown his way.
And a lot of people make jokes kind of about Tim Tawa
and being a utility player.
I just think that this guy obviously has done what has been asked of him by this team.
And much like Blaze Alexander,
you got to just tip your cap to a guy that will play literally
whatever position on the diamond backs that the team needs
just to get playing time and just to help the team out.
So I really, really do like Tim Tawa over there.
there at first base. And again, I think after what I saw yesterday with Blaze, Blaise making some
excellent plays and some excellent throws, but some excellent throws that were not 100% on target.
Tawa did a great job of digging some of those out and being the second part of that,
you know, relationship when it came to making those incredible defensive plays to get Giants
runners out there at first base. Again, though, the road is not easy ahead of the Diamondbacks.
They have some of their toughest opponents of the year. While I will agree with Elise about
the sweep thing, I will also say that it's odd the way that this team this season has been able to
step up against opponents that are above 500. That right there might be the one thing that's
giving me some faith here. Count them out. Put them in the underdog spot. This team just does better
from that position. And they have done better from the underdog position the entire time Tori
Lovallo has been manager of this team. That is the one thing that is giving me faith that they could
potentially get it done. Plus, the pressure is not on this team.
Nobody is expecting the Diamondbacks to make the playoffs.
Even as I'm saying this, I know there's 10 of you in the chat that think I'm insane
for even bringing up the concept of playoffs or postseason play for this team.
Rightfully so, you know, even though they seem close, it seems fairly impossible
that they're going to be able to make up this ground and have the other teams that are
ahead of them also lose so that they are the only team to catch the Mets, right?
That's another important factor here with how well the Giants are playing.
The Diamondbacks do control their destiny, though, when it comes to that.
They do have a three-game series with the Giants at home, and if they can play them tough there,
if they can perhaps get the S word against those guys in that series,
then things look much better for this team.
And they've also helped improve their position by knocking one of the teams that's ahead of them in the wildcard race back down below them.
So a lot of baseball still left to play and a lot of fun baseball left to play.
That's the reason why we scoreboard watch.
The Diamondbacks could be out of it as soon as next week.
Again, the series with the twins, very important, very much a must win.
And again, it's against some very tough starting pitchers that the twins will be putting out there on the mound.
We are going to preview that series on the other side of this break.
Again, just wanted to tell you guys, I love you.
Appreciate you being here.

All right.
Well, great to see Mark Salera here in the chat.
He said, I'm here because Derek said Dodgers once, so I was summoned.
Guilty, guilty.
Glad to have you here, though, my guy.
Glad to have you here.
Glad to have all of you guys here.
And glad for the Diamondbacks to finally be facing a sub-500 opponent in the Minnesota Twins.
But does, I mean, is it trouble?
Like, we know that the Diamondbacks have not had a good season at times against weaker opponents.
for instance, just for instance, look at the teams.
I said earlier, the teams, the Diamondbacks have been swept five times this season.
I'm pretty sure four out of the five times are against sub 500 opponents.
I know one of them was the Miami Marlins and I'm pretty sure the other one was the St. Louis Cardinals,
both teams, which have a sub 500 record.
And then again, the other three were kind of a hodgepodge around that they lost three in a row to.
So again, this team has not had much success.
at times against the teams they should be.
Yet they kind of find success once again against teams that they have no business beating.
Let's take a look at the Minnesota Twins and their season at a glance because it's not
been an easy season for them.
I discussed this on yesterday's show, but the Minnesota Twins have not only had a rough season,
but they have a lot of people very angry with them for the trades they made at the deadline and
for the way the ownership group has been basically handling the progression of the franchise.
This season, they're 64 and 82 with a minus 85 run differential.
Diamondbacks couldn't be catching them at a much better time.
They are two and eight in their last 10 games with two consecutive losses.
They're starting pitching ERA, not very good for 55, which is 23rd in all of Major League Baseball.
Meanwhile, their bullpen has a relief pitching ERA of 4.68, which is 25th in Major League Baseball,
and still somehow inexplicably better than the Diamondbacks.
then you have their minus 15 outs above average.
So they're not very good defensively.
Not much good about this team overall.
And again, with the way that their particular season is gone, the way that ownership
and the front office handled the trade deadline and traded away Carlos Correa and got
rid of so many of their good pieces, it felt like this team just kind of gave up at that point.
It's understandable, Damon.
I think that, you know, obviously you have a lot of things, a lot of turmoil with your
team. It's just interesting to see the way that teams respond, right? Like you have the diamondbacks
that went through what they went through at the trade deadline. And they meanwhile have responded
pretty well, uh, to be honest. You have like I said at the beginning of the season with the San
Diego Padres went through with their ownership group and all of the turmoil they had there to start
the season, all of the uncertainty in the future. And that just galvanized that team, which that team
does admittedly have a lot of FU energy. So if you give them something to galvanize,
over they will but this twins team unfortunately at least for them their fans for our guy peedy
who loves the twins and for the franchise itself they've just kind of given up and and have not
looked very good at all since that point and understandably so damon i didn't realize that was my
cue to talk i'm sorry you were muted on that one i hit you up while you're waiting what let's talk
ball derrick what's up what's going on i mean i needed to see your face the twins have completely capitulated
since the trade deadline.
Sorry, my background shot is the worst background shot, probably.
We can't all have arcades.
We can't all live in Raven Buster.
No, I mean, this really is like, like you're looking at,
you're looking at the absolute worst versus the absolute best background in the company
on your screen right now.
I got my own cactus light.
The duality of man, Eric, is what we're seeing right here.
For sure.
Well, the duality of two teams, right?
Like, I mean, it's the Twin Cities, right?
And the twins.
Yeah.
And you have two teams that were basically in the exact same position at the trade deadline.
The Diamondbacks somehow are in their race and the twins are almost 20 games under 500.
Yeah, the twins are terrible.
And you got to take advantage of it.
Because that's what the Diamondbacks have struggled with all season long is taking advantage of teams when they, like when you play the pirates and you know one of the games is Paul Skeens and it's a three game split.
Well, you kind of have to win the other two.
And then you don't do that.
You know what I mean?
And that's how you end up in the position the Diamondbacks are in.
Now is a, you know, a time where you have to, you know, buckle down and say,
we're going to take advantage of a team that is just reeling, two and eight in our last 10.
You're 100%.
And the biggest problem here is, as we'll look here at the probable pitchers, Damon,
the Diamondbacks are going up against two of the best that the twins have.
And I know these guys are young guys, but they've been killing it.
Actually, I can't say that about Joe Ryan.
and Joe Ryan's.
But Joe Ryan has been killing it for the twins all season long, regardless of the performance
of this team.
Let's take a look at those probable pitchers for this series.
The Diamondbacks have Brandon Fott going in game one here against Pablo Lopez.
Fott still has an ERA north of five, five, which is awful.
Hard to, hard to ever recover from that yes hitter for sure.
But Fott is 13 and 8 this season with a 5.18 ERA, 129 strikeouts against Pablo
Lopez, who is five and four this season.
but does have a 2.84 ERA.
Impressive stuff.
65 strikeouts.
Meanwhile, in game two, you got Joe Ryan,
their ace essentially going against Ryan Nelson,
which could be considered our ace.
Ryan Nelson, 7 and 3 this season,
3.48 ERA, 118 strikeouts.
Ryan Nelson also should have seven more wins than he currently does.
So Ryan Nelson should still be sitting at 14 and 3,
but he's not.
He's at 7 and 3.
That's the reality that we live in.
Meanwhile, Joe Ryan, really good this year for the twins, like I said, 118 strikeouts for Ryan.
Or excuse me, not that was Ryan Nelson's.
Joe Ryan has 176 strikeouts this year and a 3.32 ERA.
And then in the finale, yes, Nabila Chris Mott is still a Philly in the only picture of him that we have.
Nabila Chris Mott 2 and O with a 3.24 ERA 17 strikeouts.
He did have a bad outing.
His last outing.
However, you do really feel like he still was a.
able to, you know, keep things together to an extent, give the Diamondbacks a chance to win.
They did not win.
And then last there, they got Bailey over going up against Chris Mott.
He is 5 and 7 this year with a 5.08 ERA, 105 strikeouts.
You feel fairly good about game three.
And to be fair, Ryan Nelson, with the way he's pitching, you've got to feel fairly good about
game two.
So really, it's how do the Diamondbacks come out in the first game of the series?
Can they set the tone and get a win out of the gate?
and kind of get off on the right foot.
Of course, that would make a lot of us feel much better.
And I know to some people, anything less than a sweep in Minnesota is going to be a failure.
I implore you to at least, at least give them a chance still if they happen to win this series,
but not complete the S word.
I don't know.
Things are weird right now for this team.
And Jordan, you're right.
He says, you've got to try giving Chris Mott a uniform for that photo.
So it's sad seeing Phillies on there.
Yeah, we never want to see any of our players in any Phillies affiliated gear uniforms or anything ever.
Derek, I didn't, it, it always, it shocks me how, how upset this makes Diamondbacks fan.
I will, you know what, guys, I will email.
No, just Photoshop a poorly drawn uniform onto him.
Give them a perpientis, jersey, Damon, but draw it yourself in paint, like, you know, Microsoft.
Like Emma Spots does on our.
Yeah, exactly. She's so talented at doing the. We'll just have Emma do it. Forget it. I'm not going to have you do it. This is outside of your expertise. I'll hit up the powers that be in the Diamondbacks organization. We'll figure this thing out. We're going to get this figured out. Neville Chrysmott, you are a diving back and you deserve to be one in your photo. But again, I don't know what else we could say more about this series. The Diamondbacks just need to win it. That's it. Give them get this one series out of the way. Give yourself some wins. Get over 500. And then, head.
into the final stretch of the year, you know, with confidence and ready to go,
have a record above 500 that you can make, you know, all of these young guys that don't
know any better.
That's the best part.
We got a bunch of young guys.
They don't know any better.
They don't know what it is to win or not win or make the playoffs or not play.
They don't know.
They don't know.
So we just, we won't tell them about their 1% chance of making the playoffs.
We will just tell them to go out there and do the thing.
And maybe they will because guys like Blaze Alexander are doing it for them right now.
And right now that's who we need to lead the way, quite frankly,
especially if you're going to have guys like Catelle Marte and Corbyn Carroll slumping.
You just got to have those young guys that don't know any better,
go out there and foolishly lead us to the postseason.
And you never know.
You never know what could happen.
It's a lot of baseball is a lot of fun to watch because of that reason.
And especially because there are 162 stupid games in the season.
And no matter what, anything's possible.
Look, we got what, 17 games here to 15 games, something like that.
I don't know what the final, I think there's 17 games left.
And of course, that's, uh, or 18.
I don't know.
I'm bad at math and that's what we had Jesse here for for sure.
And, uh, that's not on me, quite frankly.
I put that on my resume when I, when I started here.
But we're going to talk less about this series with the twins.
And we're going to talk more about what the guys down on snake farm are doing.
Of course, we're going to bring you an update, uh, and tell you about our guys,
the Saudis making the playoffs in the Texas league.
We're going to do that on the other side of this break.
Don't you go anywhere.
watching the PHNX Diamondback show. I am here in my home and I don't want to go outside because
even though it is a sub 100 degree day here in Phoenix, it's still entirely too hot for me to be outside.
And I need help from our friends at all pro shade concepts to extend my outdoor living area.
That's what they do. And they do it with style. They can help you extend your outdoor living space
with a custom fit awning. They have hundreds of designs and colors to choose from and they'll match any
home. And let me tell you, I wasn't, you know, I'm I'm old as I've disclosed many times on this show.
I've been forthright and honest about that.
And I'm used to customized awnings being like something made out of fabric that kind of,
no, that's not what our guys at all pro-shade concepts do.
They can hook you up with actual pieces of art that essentially become a motorized awning
that help extend your outdoor living space and help make your home look even more beautiful than
it already does.
They also have rolled down patio shades that you can either put on your patio or roll down window
shades that you can put inside like our guy Espos did to help block out those harmful UV rays
and keep your patio or your home up to 20 degrees cooler.
They can also replace or fix most old or outdated patio shades and audings,
and they have been the most trusted local shade company here in Arizona,
voted number one by ranking Arizona for patio shades in 2024.
Their license, bonded and insured, and let me tell you,
after going through some of the repairs I've gone through, that is very important.

terms conditions and exclusions do apply all right well damon we got ourselves of course uh the youngsters
like I said earlier, these young players are truly important to the Diamondback system,
especially considering that this organization has no choice at times,
but to build from those minor league players.
And some of them are really flourishing.
Let's take a look at what is happening currently down on Snake Farm.
We got our guy Spencer Geisting, who has simply been incredible lately.
He turned in yet another solid outing against, I think they were playing the Las Vegas Aviators, Damon.
He put in six innings of work and allowed two runs with,
one walk and five, five strikeouts.
He's a left-hander, so you got to love that.
And he has really been in a groove recently.
He posted a 2.28 ERA with six walks and 24 strikeouts and 23 and two-thirds innings
pitched over his last four starts.
So again, that is a big, very exciting development for the Diamondbacks.
And another guy that we cannot stop talking about is Tommy Troy.
Tommy Troy just continues to be very, very.
good for the Diamondbacks within this organization. They continue to be just, you know,
um, he just continues to be a guy that kind of flies through. I feel like we're going to see
Tommy Troy here in no time. And that's something that is very exciting. He went three,
he went three for four in the loss of the aviators. So far, Tommy Troy has been having himself
a pretty damn good season with the Aces. He's slashing 308, 388, 444. He has three home runs.
He has 12 RBI and he has an 832 OPS, 20 strikeouts and 14 walks.
So you don't love that part.
But he has played 11 games in center field and 17 at second base with the Aces.
So yet another guy here in the Diamondbacks number five overall prospect that has versatility that can play at different positions and that can provide the Diamondbacks with something very exciting in the future.
Because the problem, you know, again, with some of their infielders, especially some of their infield depth is they're all young.
They're all coming up at the same time.
The question recently has been,
what do you do with Jordan Lawler coming up?
You know, what do you do with Blaze Alexander?
How do these guys play?
How does everybody get playing time?
So it's going to be interesting,
especially with Tommy Troy playing the majority of his time
at second base there to see if when he gets called up,
how he can factor in.
And if the Diamondbacks can perhaps give him
some more consistent playing time than they've done with guys like Jordan Lawler.
And honestly, he's Tristan English.
He's another guy that I don't really fail.
feel like got a super fair shot at a major league level, but it does feel like, again,
Tommy Troy is rounding into a very, very good baseball player.
Jordan in the chat brings up A.J. Vukovic. Actually, we talked about AJ just on our last
snake farm last Thursday. And absolutely, he is somebody, he's been in the organization for more
than a few seasons now. And I feel like he is a guy that's just lately really coming on.
that's the weird thing about the development of baseball players, especially in the minor
leagues, but also at a major league level, they can look like an absolute bust. And yet somehow
these guys start putting it together. They start, you know, they really start making,
you know, some improvements, bits of coaching, changing mechanics, changing something as stupid
as like where you put your right foot if it's off to the left or it's more, you know,
in line with your back foot. Where you put, you know, where you, you put, you know, where you
you do this, where you do that.
Like a lot of the development for these guys happens fast.
And you see improvements yield the results that we're all looking for.
But sometimes, I mean, again, and this is something that is frustrated fans with Tori Lovelo
and probably not just the Diamondbacks, other baseball teams is when guys don't have success
when they're putting up bad numbers and they're not performing, they're not delivering at the plate.
Yet the managers or people in the front office are happy with them and satisfied based on
everything they're doing otherwise. Even though the results aren't there, they still feel like,
you know, a player is being coached properly and they're taking the coaching, they're making
adjustments, and the at-bats are getting better, even if the at-bats don't yield hits, right? And
sometimes it leaves the rest of us scratching our heads a bit, wondering what they're seeing
that we're not. Again, it's the development. It's the maturation. It's how they progress
in becoming a big league player. And, you know, I don't know. It's one of my favorite parts to
of baseball, considering that a guy that we watch in the Arizona
Fall League that hit 1-20 can all of a sudden be a major league hitter
hitting over 300 like two seasons later. It's baseball's
weird like that, but it also makes it fun. And now I'm going to say some sort of cliche that
Tori normally says, like, that's the part of the game. You got to love it. I'm not going to do
that, I promise. But I did also want to talk about Yilbert Diaz, Jillbert Diaz,
excuse me. Is he in fact back? He might be. He was demoted
to AA Amarillo, so I don't want to get too excited about his performance.
But since August 23rd, Yilbert Diaz in seven games has seven and two-thirds innings pitched in relief.
He has three hits allowed, zero runs, zero earn runs, no home runs, two walks allowed, and 10K.
He has a 0.00 ERA and a 0.68 whip.
It's crazy.
It's crazy.
So it really does feel like Jilber has really done some things.
But again, also, I'll caution.
I don't know, Damon, maybe you can make the call on this one.
It's the Texas League, right?
So he's with the Emeril Assad Poodles, and he's still a league that usually offense.
The ball really flies in Hodge Town.
The ball, you know, typically is one of those leagues that ERAs aren't great for any pitcher.
But it's also Jill Ber Diaz, who has pitched at a major league level as a starter now down at AA facing those kind of hitters.
So am I right to be excited about it or should we temper our feelings on him just a little bit?
Oh, you're muted.
Eric, there is currently construction going on right above my room.
Literally above you in the bathroom.
This is going to be fun, man.
Yeah, I think Gilbert Diaz is it really bad?
No, it's fun.
It was just funny because right as you said it, you heard a drill go.
Yeah, yeah.
I think Gilbert Diaz is like, like what we saw last year was electric.
when he got called up.
There's clearly something to work with there.
He's the candy man.
We know that.
He has an electric nickname for a bullpen pitcher.
I hope he figures things out a little bit.
It was sad to see him get demoted twice.
But yeah, I mean, I want to talk more about Tommy Troy.
Tommy, they're not going to let you.
Get out of here.
You don't get to say anything about Tommy Troy.
The construction workers have determined that you're going to just got to wait to talk
about Tommy Troy until the next.
time we're in studio together, Damon. That's it for you. And yes, Jordan, Drillbert Diaz,
drill birdiez is who we're talking about. Mark says they're trying to drill some
personality into that room of yours up there, Damon. So it doesn't appear to be working. But what
did work, speaking of the sod pool, speaking of double A, the Saudis did win the second half
of the Texas League. They are the Texas League second half champions and are officially
in the playoffs. So let me just do this.
Let me switch out my diver back hat for a Saudis hat.
That feels right.
Let's go.
All right.
And let's go, Saudis.
Let's go.
It's funny because we talked about John Boy's plan for realignment major league baseball.
And one of the things we did talk about was this exact type of playoff structure that the Texas League has in place.
The winners of each half, if they're different teams, advanced to a playoff series, potentially involving the first half division winners and second half division winners.
So the Saudis win their second half of their division.
And because they had a good second half of the year, they are in the playoffs.
So that's a lot of fun.
And I don't really hate this playoff structure.
I don't.
I think that after really listening to John Boy, explain it and break things down, I think we,
I promised you guys that we were going to link to that video.
And I'm fairly certain that we never did that.
But make sure to go check out John Boy's video on MLB Realignment because I don't hate this idea.
I do think that one of the main purposes of the way that John Boy wanted to structure the playoffs was to keep the regular season, which in this case, we were just reducing down to 156 games, keep it interesting, keep teams playing for something.
And I mean, even if you had an abysmal first half, like the Diamondbacks did, you could potentially have a great second half and be your division winner for the second half and make the playoffs, regardless of what your record at the end of the year.
stands. And I mean, again, like I said, at times in baseball, I care more about what you're doing now
than what the past, what you did in the past that's impacting your numbers. I know that does tell
the story. I know your entire season does make up who you are, for instance, as a pitcher. But this
goes back to Eduardo Rodriguez, who quite frankly has vanquished three of the most formidable foes
in his last, you know, three starts and has done a great job of going out there and being consistent
for this team. I just simply cannot believe the way that he has pitched against the Dodgers,
the Red Sox, and, you know, again, the Giants that he just faced. So you just never know if
your guys can suddenly turn things around the way that Erod has. You can have a shot in the second
half and it could make things a lot of fun. Sean said that format would potentially lead to teams
not trying in the second half, though, and you're not wrong about that either. However,
in this scenario, the way that you are structured, the way that your ranking go based on your
record determines how many games you have to play in the playoffs. And more importantly, it determines
how much there's a chance that you could be in a one game playoff or a three game playoff
that would quickly eliminate you if the team you're playing is hot, no matter how much of a better
record you might have or no matter how much of a better team you could potentially have. So
it's interesting. But you're right. There are some things about it.
it that would potentially change things.
You wouldn't have to have teams necessarily that's secure to playoff spot after the
first half, be playing strong up until the end.
However, you do want to play your best baseball as you're heading into the playoffs.
So a lot of different, interesting, I guess, strategies that could go into that particular
structure.
But hats off to the Saudis, man.
I mean, I love this team.
The sod poodles are my favorite team in the Diamondbacks minor league system, quite
frankly.
I think that they are an extremely well-run organization.
I think that they make baseball so much fun down there for their fans.
They have like three nicknames, right?
They're the Yellow City pigweeds.
They're also the calf fries still.
And I love the calf fries.
You know I love the calf fries.
So congrats to the sod poodles.
The guys that helped him get there, of course, Ryan Waldschmidt, who we've talked about quite a bit on snake farm.
We've talked a little bit about Lou James Gruver as well.
He's another guy that helped him get it done.
Landon Sims, his arm helped the Saudis get there.
he's been having a nice season as well as Jose Fernandez and Avery Short.
So these are all names to look for in the future.
And quite frankly, like I said, the Arizona Diamondbacks really cannot,
they can't really afford to like trade off guys,
especially with the way things are going right now for this team.
They really need to try to build their minor league depth back up
and have those guys be prepared to play at any time.
And I think they have a lot of guys that have really cruised quickly through the system.
I think Ryan Waldschmidt is going to be one of those guys.
I think we're going to see him here any day.
I also think Tommy Troy is going to be one of those guys as well as Lou James Gruber.
But the pitching deft is really what I'm concerned about right now for the farm system, for this team, for everything.
Mike Hazen did the best job, I think, of any, that any GM could of bringing in some arms at the trade deadline.
And, you know, again, this team is in a position now to offer Zach Gallen a qualifying offer that he will most likely decline.
and then they'll be in a position to bring in a decent draft pick in the 2025 draft or 2026 draft.
Scotty Mac says hops are my favorite logo in the minors.
You're not wrong, Scotty Mac.
That's probably me just declaring my love for the sod poodles was probably unjust
because the Hillsborough hops are one of the greatest teams in all of minor league system.
They're barley is their mascot.
They have a mascot named barley, and he's just a big hop.
That that part doesn't make sense because his name's Barley and he's a hop, but I don't care.
I love him.
And I have a Christmas ornament of him hanging in my tree every December.
That is such a well, well, that is also a very well run organization.
And I look forward to visiting them when they're going to have a new ballpark here soon.
I can't wait for that.
So I'm going to make it out for that.
Jacob Franklin says we all love the hops.
We absolutely do.
Elise says, Jake, Alec, and Paven could all be expendable next year is some of this young minor league.
talent pans out.
You're 100% right, man.
You're 100% right.
And again, it determines, like, what are you going to get for those guys in return?
I think a lot of people, I know at least is in this category, but a lot of people have
kind of written paving off now as somewhat, you know, of a disappointment and a failure for
his time with this team.
I can't argue too much with that, considering where they drafted him and the expectation
that they had about Pavin, but I still think that Jake McCarthy and Alec Thomas have a lot to offer, you know, this team.
And again, it's all about, you know, getting something big in return for them that helps prove this team.
Cog says we believe in Pave and Smith.
I'm sure there's at least three people that would ask.
We?
Who's we?
Who's we?
Who's we?
We!
All right.
Yeah.
No, no. No, if you got Zay, you got Damon, I think, I think that's all, that's all we're going to get from that.
But of course, again, much like why are we watching this team down the stretch when most of us believe they're not actually going to make the playoffs?
Because they're not eliminated yet and it's fun. Why are we watching talking about minor league prospects?
Why are we watching them? Because these guys are going to become, Geraldo Perdomo, Corbyn Carroll, and Blaze Alexander of the future.
and I believe with my whole heart
that they have a lot of guys in their system
that are going to develop into some quality major league players.
Whether they trade those guys away
before they become that for this organization
is a whole different story,
but fingers crossed, they don't.
Because, again, watching prospects develop into big leaguers
is one of my favorite things.
It also goes with professional wrestling too.
There are a lot of similarities between professional wrestling and baseball.
Believe it or not, as much as most of you think I'm crazy to even say that.
But one of the things I do see with, with, you know, wrestling is watching guys start out, you know,
wrestling in front of 50 people in a high school gym and then watching them sell out a Legion stadium at WrestleMania, right?
I mean, I've had the pleasure of working with quite a few guys that have made it to that point.
And the one common theme there with all of those guys were they're just all really good dudes that, in my opinion, deserved it.
all of the ones that were just hardworking good people that treated people well with respect
ended up making it far in that business.
So it's just always fun to see guys go from, you know, somebody who just has hopes and dreams
to literally, you know, reaching the top.
I feel like Perdomo is one of those guys that just really, it's just amazing to see
the player that he's become.
And I'll be the first to admit that as much as I always loved him as like a role player
on this team, which I know Damon's going to hate that I said that part.
part is that, you know, again, Jerry P has just come around to not only become a leader and a
captain on this team, but also become one of the best players on this team defensively and
offensively. So I love this guy. Love him. Let's see. We are still talking about me.
Not only, wait, don't forget, if we do make the playoffs, it's not just an eyebrow slit. I'm also
going to go to Ketel's barber and get my hair done exactly like his. I don't think it's going to
yield the best results, but I'm down to give it a shot.
I'm down to see what they can do for this mob.
So I'm looking forward to that.
I do want to tell you.
I'll go in on eyebrow slits with you, brother.
Yes.
I'm in on that.
Let's go.
I am tired of being on the,
I'm tired of doing these things alone.
So I need this, David.
I need this from you.
I need you.
We're parts of your ceiling falling down in front of the camera?
No, that was my, uh,
uh,
uh,
things are not,
things are not,
Things are not good over here at my house.
There's a reason that we do not do this,
this podcast from home on a daily basis.
Otherwise,
my setup would be maybe a little bit better than this.
Just one penit on your wall.
That's all I want is one pennant on your wall.
Nothing?
No.
And where do you want it on the door?
I want it on the door.
I don't know.
I don't know where to put it.
I don't know.
This is the,
this is the room I got,
you know?
I'm with you.
I'm with you.
I'd be living in a penthouse if I could, Derek.
It doesn't work like that.
You and me both.
Well, I do enjoy my house very much.
I do have all the toys.
All my toys are here.
And so like that part I like.
All I was going to say is I want to, I'll get in on the eyebrows slits with you because
ASU fans like to make fun of me for my eyebrows.
So I feel like that would just like kind of just like, oh, let's let's lean into it even more.
Like I feel like that would be like they would be sick to their stomach seeing the slits in the eyebrows.
Oh, you know, I normally don't compliment you, but what's wrong with your eyebrows?
Inject that into the into my veins, Derek.
I don't know.
I mean, you're perfect.
They're a little bit thick, but I think that it's, I think it's kind of funny.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, you're, you're right.
You're right.
And it will be even funnier when you have eyebrows slits for sure.
I cannot wait for that.
But we're going in.
I'm glad I got somebody to go in on it with me and not just leave me out here,
dyeing my beard teal all by myself without no, nobody also dying their beard teal.
Speaking of things happening today, obviously today, this has been a terrible 24 hours in our country, right?
And today is a day where we are supposed to remember the attacks that happened against our country.
And, you know, remember all of the people that we lost on this day, all of the innocent lives that we lost on this day back on September 11, 2001.
And all of the heroic people that tried to save lives who also lost their lives.
And also not just them, the lives of generations of families that were affected by this and the lives of people who still are alive but have had their health impacted by the fact that they were, you know, present or they're trying to help save lives, trying to do things.
And it was just, again, it's a day that we should all like, I know we get used to hearing the never forget, but we should truly never forget what we lost as a country on this day and what happened.
And baseball, of course, served as a powerful symbol of normalcy when baseball came back.
When baseball resumed, I just remember how much we were all thankful for it.
I mean, the only thing I can compare it to recently was when we went through the pandemic.
And suddenly we had KBO baseball on our TVs, and we were waking up at 3 o'clock in the morning just to watch something that made us once again feel like,
life was back to normal.
You know what I mean?
And of course,
baseball just served as that.
It was an outlet for a nation that was grieving.
And, you know,
it was a rallying point for the city of New York.
And then after initially postponing games,
Major League Baseball was like the first thing to resume play.
And teams like the Yankees and the Mets,
they started doing community support efforts,
fundraising efforts.
They started doing things to support.
or, you know, obviously their community and a huge impact that September 11th left,
the attacks of September 11th left on the city of New York and this country, right?
But one thing that was always really eye-opening to me was that was the year that the Arizona
Diamondbacks faced off against the New York Yankees and the World Series and brought our
state the first major championship that we've ever had.
No disrespect to the Mercury or the Rattlers not trying to get into that debate.
But, of course, you know, it was a big deal that they brought home.
the World Series trophy.
And perception of that moment and finding out of a different perception was crazy to me.
Because as a Diamondbacks fan, as somebody that's lived in Arizona my entire life that never
had the joy of experiencing my sports team win a championship, that was a huge moment for us.
It was a celebratory moment.
We were having parades.
We were having great times.
Everything was wonderful here in Arizona.
out. And then I read an article about us being the evil baseball team that ruined the best story that could have
happened in baseball, that we were snakes from the desert, quote, quote, part of this article,
snakes from the desert that attack them the same way other snakes from the desert did. It was
a mind-blowingly awful piece. It was an opinion piece. But nonetheless, I,
as a fan of the Diamondbacks had never, never, ever perceived one of our finest moments,
our finest moment, or my finest sports moment in my entire life, basically, as an Arizona sports
fan, perceive it as being a evil or like something that hurt other people, right?
Like, I obviously, I know teams of, you know, one, like fans of one team aren't going to like us
because of, you know, because of that. But it was a crazy thing. And again, it's, it just goes to show that
that sometimes when you're unaware of the perception from someone else's perspective,
you don't really understand how they're viewing it.
Like the reason why it was taken so personally,
or I guess the reason why it was viewed so negatively,
was because after that attack,
it felt like this was the perfect,
this was the perfect storybook ending for the city of New York
to have the Yankees make it to the World Series and to beat us.
And that's what everybody expected to happen.
That's what everybody thought was going to have.
It was pretty much a foregone conclusion in a lot of fans' minds.
And it didn't happen because we won.
And again, I don't think it's something we should ever be ashamed of.
I think to this day how much pride I have that we were able to do that,
how much that seventh inning moment meant to all of us,
Randy Johnson coming out in relief Louise Gonzalez getting that hit.
But it's just the perception sometimes from a completely different, you know,
group of people, right?
And I remember I was like,
shocked at that. I was floored. I couldn't believe it because again, it's not a thought that ever
actually entered my mind in any way, shape, or form. All I had was joy and elation. And you're
going to be villainized sometimes by the team you beat in a championship, but I never imagined that
it was going to be perceived in that manner and in that way in regards to the Diamondbacks beating
them. So again, it's, it's, yeah. And Sean's not wrong. Sean said the Yankees had won four out of five
before that, Crimea River, it was the end of their dynasty for sure.
But they really did take that particular year, you know, very heavy.
And it was a weird thing.
It was a weird thing.
But I guess understandable, I'm just still have no regrets about the Diamondbacks, you know,
winning that championship.
Also, Randy Johnson has set a ton of history this week.
It is throwback Thursday.
This is absolutely part of it.
But Randy Johnson, just when you look back at this team's history this particular week,
It's just Randy Johnson in his years setting one milestone after the next.
On September 10th, 2000, Randy Johnson records the 3,000 strikeout of his career against the Miami Marlins.
Then, or I guess they were the Florida Marlins at the time, I think.
On September 9th, 2002, Randy Johnson sets an MLB record with his fifth straight 300 plus strikeout season.
He ties Nolan Ryan for the most 300 plus strikeout seasons in a career with six.
And then on September 10th, 2004, Randy Johnson earns his 12th or earns his 100th win as a diamond back on his 41st birthday.
On his 41st birthday, it was a 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
Yep, that's how that that's that's the history that this man set for us for sure.
But Brandon Webb also on September 9, 2006, through his first career one hitter, was a complete game, a 3-0 win over the car.
And at the time, at an hour and 54 minutes, it was the shortest game in Chasefield history.
God bless short games.
Am I right?
Am I right?
All right.
And then last but not least, in 2022, Zach Gallen on September 12th, 2022 established a club
record with 44 and a third inning scoreless streak from August 8th through September 12th,
surpassing Brandon Webb's previous mark of 42 innings in 2007.
His streak was the third longest in baseball.
baseball since 1998 behind a couple of names that we know oral herschizer and that
granky oral herschizer went 59 innings pitched without allowing a run in 1988 and zach
granky did it for the dodgers in 45 and two-thirds innings pitched in 2015 so brandon webb joined
some illustrious company or excuse me zagallan joined some illustrious company and also every
time i read a stat like this it reminds me once again of how we as a fan base were
of more Brandon Webb.
We should have had more Brandon Webb for sure.
But anyway, Diamondbacks have set some history on this day.
Randy Johnson set some history on this day.
And of course, like I said earlier, this is a day that none of us should ever forget what happened on this day.
And always remember the lives lost for sure.
Also, I did want to give just our heartfelt condolences to Jim Marshall.
the Diamondbacks announced that their, I guess, lifetime employee it felt like.
Jim Marshall has been a part of the Diamondbacks for so many years.
He passed away on September 7, 2025 at the age of 94 years old.
So rest in peace, Jim Marshall, we could all be so lucky to live to see 94.
And his baseball career spanned from him being a part of, from a team taking the field,
to the dugout as a coach, to the front office.
It spanned eight decades and 72 seasons from 1950 through 2021.
So rest and peace, Jim Marshall, you will be missed.
