Starting point is 00:00:02 Well, the Arizona Diamondbacks get four dingers tonight against Dylan Cease, and somehow their offense comes alive one day after going scoreless and only getting three hits. Also, Brandon Fott had one of his best outings of his entire career. Is James McCann the reason why? We're going to talk about that. Don't you go anywhere? You're watching the PHNX Diamondback Show. We're starting in 30 seconds. Ski and welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondback Show right here on PHNX Diamondback Show right here on PHNN.
Starting point is 00:00:36 My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. And we are here talking about a big win for the Arizona Diamondbacks, beating the Padres tonight by a score of 8 to 2. Of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365 and Game Time. Go use that code of PHNX 365. When you sign up over at Game Time, you'll get yourself some bonus bets by following some easy steps. Go over to Game Time, get yourself $20 off your first purchase using our code of PHNX. and go to some fine baseball games like this one tonight.
Starting point is 00:01:10 Shannon, sorry, guys, I do not have the cactus light with me tonight. We had a lot of moving parts going on. I got my guy Erriton on the ones and twos again tonight, aka our freckled mamba. But again, Sean, we are so back. One day after being completely gone and dead in the water, we are so back. And that's what this type of year feels like right now for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Not to mention the fact that every single one of these games, games feels so very important. Tonight, though, the offense was on fire, and it was great to see the diamondbacks win this one by a score of eight to two. They improve to 46 and 47 on the season, one game below 500. And the debacks are shockingly good against the NL West and have been kind of this season. Really, to be honest, the NL West hasn't been the problem for the Diamondbacks. The debacks are eight and five in their last 13 overall games versus the NL West.
Starting point is 00:02:06 They are 15 and 11 overall this season, and they continue to be able to hang with the other teams in their division. It's just mostly the other teams outside of the division. And to be honest, like we've said, many times, it's teams that they should be beating. But I am here in the arcade, like I said, because we had a lot of moving part. So thank you guys all for joining me. It's great to see so many of you here. Again, big thanks to Ayrton for being able to produce me on this night while Damon is still traveling. Again, the guys had themselves a great day out there at the Big 12 media day.
Starting point is 00:02:41 It was great to see my guy, Big E, stopped by. And I'm very mad at Kevin because he did not introduce himself as large intimate. That's a whole other thing we could get into. But we have so much to talk about specifically this game. Diamondbacks bats were hot against Dylan's cease. Just one day removed from that three hit, no run performance, which kind of left you scratching your head. They did get robbed on a couple of home runs in that.
Starting point is 00:03:06 that game. They did not get robbed of home runs in this game. The Diamondbacks hung five hits and six earned runs on Dylan Cs, including three home runs. James McCann hit his second home run as a diamond back in the third inning. It was an absolute monster of a home run, 434 feet for McCann. I believe it was 110, 110.3 mile per hour exit below for that one. And then let's just get to it. Gino Svarez. He got in on the action with a solo home run of his own. In the fourth inning, number 29 of the year, Ayrton, yeah, go ahead and put that little stupid idiot up there. Where are you? You're down there. I hate you. I hate you. Why do you make bets like this? Why do you do this to me? Anyway, we're up to 29, 11 home runs shy of me
Starting point is 00:03:54 having to figure out how I'm going to dye my beard teal in some way, shape, or form. But number 29 of the year for Gino. Perdomo was on. on the broadcast afterwards, campaigning for Gino to be in the home run derby. I don't. He was, he was basically like shouting at MLB that called Gino, like as if that hasn't already happened. Like if MLB hasn't called one of the guys with the most home runs in the National League this year, they really don't have any idea what's going on here in the desert.
Starting point is 00:04:23 That was the second most home runs now in Diamondbacks franchise history prior to the All-Star break for any player in this team's history again, behind. behind just one Luis Gonzalez, who I believe had 35, but I don't have that information right now, completely off the top of my head. But who says, I'm with Domo, not going to lie. Yes, there's definitely a, I'm definitely with Pardomo here. I would love to see Gino Svarez in it. However, one thing I do like is like with Jose Ramirez from the Cleveland Guardians,
Starting point is 00:04:57 he removed himself from the All-Star game altogether. Now, I know from personal experience, players do enjoy the time off as much as you might think that, and it is an honor. I'm not going to knock playing in the All Star game. It's a definite honor for these guys to participate in the All Star game. But I feel like once you've done it, once you've been a part of it, there might be other priorities in your life. Maybe the break is important to you or maybe like what J. Ram said, maybe he's being honest when he was saying, he just kind of wants to focus on the season and not go basically be a part of all of that. There's a lot of things going on, a lot of interviews, a lot of stuff going on very quickly.
Starting point is 00:05:42 It's a, it's a hectic week for those guys to go participate in the All-Star game. So I can understand that, but in this case, there's no reason for Gino to not already be on MLB's radar as a participant in the home run derby. I don't know how I feel about that necessarily myself. I don't want to, you know, I don't, I don't want to be a sad sack when it comes to that. I would love to see Gino in the home run derby. I would hate for his participation in the home run derby to do anything to impact his swing or his performance. And we have heard that from guys in the past that I've participated in the derby that afterwards
Starting point is 00:06:19 they didn't, you know, get their swing back right or whatever the case may be. But whatever the decision is, it looks like it's shaping up to be a very fun home run derby and a lot of the top home run hitters are participating. So it would be great to see Gino as a part of that. And know his home runs that he hits in the home run derby do not count towards the beard bet. So get that out of your minds right now. I mean, I've already made it as clear as possible that this particular beard bet is only for Arizona Diamondbacks players named Aheu Nios-Wares. So should he either change his name or leave this team for any reason at all, then that's off. But anyway, another big home run, maybe even bigger than Gino's.
Starting point is 00:07:00 In your guys' mind, probably not, because it moves us one step closer to the teal beard. But we got a grand domo in this one. In the fifth inning with one out, James McCann walked, as he tends to do. Got an Alec Thomas single, and then Catel Marte walks to load the bases. I was very careful to not tweet out the thing
Starting point is 00:07:19 because certain people like to scream at me when I tweet out the thing about the bases being loaded and the plane being full of mother effing snakes. And then when it doesn't happen, of course, it's my fault. But in this case, maybe they're right. I don't know because I pulled the tweet back. I had it. It was funny. It was little snakes on the base path,
Starting point is 00:07:36 but then Twitter had to go mess up my format. So I just deleted the tweet all together. And what happens? Heraldo Pardomo hits a grand slam. It's Pardomo's 10th home run of the season. Second grand slam of the year, also for Domo. And it was a monster one because
Starting point is 00:07:51 this one took, I'm not going to say it's a close game, but yeah, I mean, it was only a two to nothing ball game at that point makes it six to nothing and really felt like it put it away there early on in the fifth inning. The way that Brandon fought was pitching in this particular game, it felt even more like he got put away. But again, great night here offensively. Corby and Carroll got in on the fun late, even though he did kind of struggle throughout this one. Carol hit his 21st home run in the ninth inning. That one 102.7 miles per hour off the bat went nearly 400 feet to right center
Starting point is 00:08:24 field. But since returning from his hand injury, Corbyn Carroll is four for 22. That's a 182 batting average. He has 10 strikeouts, including tonight prior to that home run. He was 0 for four with four strikeouts. So I'm not sure if for any reason, there is concern. I mean, it's baseball. So one thing that's always important to remember about baseball, it's always going to be difficult for guys to bounce back after an injury. And considering Corbyn Carroll's particular injury, and the length of time that he took off, it's not surprising that he might be adjusting a little bit. Not sure if he still has any kind of pain.
Starting point is 00:09:03 I doubt the Diamondbacks would be allowing him to play if he was experiencing any pain, but I doubt maybe he might be fibbing and not telling them about any pain he's experiencing. So he can play. It's a weird injury, once again, one that's not going to heal like a normal broken bone. So hopefully that doesn't impact him going out.
Starting point is 00:09:23 And yeah, Killarex is right about that. Bro has two four strikeout games since returning from his hand injury. You're not wrong about that. He does. So again, there could be concerns there. When I talk about guys not participating in the All-Star game, I don't know. One of those guys that I might feel might benefit from not doing that would be Corby Carroll.
Starting point is 00:09:43 I know that sucks. Again, it's terrible. I'm a bad guy. It's not the popular decision. However, I will say that, you know, you got to feel like Corbyn Carroll. needs to get right and participating in extra games is not necessarily going to help here. But Ryan H. is calling me Baja Blas Derek. I'm guessing that someone else came up with that nickname.
Starting point is 00:10:11 I don't know where that came from, but I know my friend Tim would be very excited that you're calling me Baja Blast, Derek, for sure. But again, this was a big game for the Diamondbacks offense. they go out there. They put up eight runs in this win. And again, just a great night to see one night after some concerns about the offense overall. Welcome to the team, Tristan English. He makes his debut, made a bunch of great plays over there defensively at first base. So could totally play the position well.
Starting point is 00:10:41 It was also great to see so many of his friends and family members making the trip out to San Diego. Not a terrible place to make your debut and to have to drag your family to, in the middle of summer. I'm sure a lot of his friends and family were okay with taking a trip out there to San Diego. He also got absolutely robbed of the first hit of his career, of his major league career by Manny Machado, but he did get his first career RBI.
Starting point is 00:11:08 He went 0 for tonight with that one RBI, two strikeouts for Tristan English, but looked like he was having a lot of fun out there. They interviewed, I believe, his mother and other family members, and they just talked about how excited he was to be called up. You know, and this is a guy that's been in the Diamondbacks organization for a while. And it's just great to see those moments now for me personally.
Starting point is 00:11:32 It's one of my favorite moments to see in the clubhouse to see every day. Just because it's that moment of being able to watch right before my eyes, somebody's dreams come true. Right. And so that's always a really cool moment. And again, Diamondbacks are making a lot of guys' dreams come true this year with how many minor leaguers they're going to have to call up in order for them to fulfill up this roster and continue to try to be competitive. But great performances tonight from James McCann. We'll talk about him more, but offensively, one for two tonight, that home run, two runs scored.
Starting point is 00:12:12 He had two walks. Lordeus Gurriel Jr. also had himself a nice game, two for four tonight, one run, and a double. or excuse me, a walk for Lourdes. He did have a double as well. But we got to give our king snake to somebody. And of course, it's the frog blood man himself, Geraldo Pardomo. He had that big grand slam.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Of course, four RBI in this one, one walk. Prudomo just continues to be incredible. He is 449 on base percentage, dating back to June 23rd, is fourth in the National League behind Michael Bush from the Cubs, James Wood, from the Nationals, Tyler Freeman, who's been having an incredible season lately for the Colorado Rockies.
Starting point is 00:12:54 So Perdomo, our king snake. And we might have to give out another one a little bit later. I know we don't do that, but I'm about to go on vacation. And I don't really give a damn about the rules anymore around here. So we're going to do that. Let's do that on the other side of this break, though. So appreciate you guys sticking around. We're going to take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:13:14 We'll be right back. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the P.H. Next Diamondback show. Of course, Vimi is the first. of its kind person to person betting app there's finally an app where you can bet with anyone and on anything at any time uh we love our friends at v me just because we get into so many arguments around the office uh we have putting contests all the time right there just in the middle of a work day and
Starting point is 00:13:47 sometimes people need to put their money where their mouth is and you can do that with vimi it's a first of its kind again person to person betting app wagers can be for free or for money and you can bet on anything including sports, video games, that little golf tournament in the office, video games, again, if you want to come at me in Mario Kart, it's probably not a good idea for you, but whatever you want to try to compete with somebody on, you can do one versus one or group challenges. It's great for fantasy sports. And most importantly, if you don't trust the Venmo guy, it's a great way to make sure that you don't have to deal with that anymore with VME, send a bet, and all money is collected up front. No more, I'll pay you later's, no more, so are losers.
Starting point is 00:14:24 So download the VME app today and play anyone using code PHNX available on the app store and Google Play. VME, anyone, anything, anytime. And of course, another great way to make sports more fun is with Bet365. Whatever the moment, it is never ordinary over Bet365. Bet365 offers the widest range of games and markets available for live in game betting across 78 sports. And of course, you never know what's going to happen the other day. I was very doubtful about this Arizona Diamondbacks team. In fact, I gave some bets.
Starting point is 00:14:54 out about Zach Gallin going under on four and a half strikeouts. He had nine. But I did hit on Josh Naylor going over one and a half total bases. And that, that value was kind of disrespectful to Josh Naylor. So cashed on that one and you can too. You can also cash in an MLB early payout offer where you're a winner if your team goes ahead by five runs with an instant payout on straight bets and parley selections, which will all be marked as winners. So new customers right now, get down on $150 in bonus bets when you bet $5, win or lose. All you got to do is sign up. Use our code of PHNX 365 when you do.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Deposit $10 in place a bet of $5 or more to receive $150 in bonus bets if your bet wins or loses. Bonus bets can be used on the spread total's players, props, futures, and more. Whatever the moment, it is never ordinary a bet 365. Must be 21 or over and physically located in Arizona. If you or someone you know is a gambling problem and wants help, call 100 next step. Text next step to 53342 or visit problemgambling.az. gov well uh man emily williams in the chat says you forgot to send perdomo up the mountain i told you i've i've kidnapped little perdomo and he doesn't get to go up to the mountain
Starting point is 00:16:06 until the diamond back somehow find their way back up to 500 they sit right now one game below 500 so we'll see we'll see what happens in the finale maybe damon as your host of tomorrow's show uh or friday show we'll get to send little domo up the mountain i believe uh tomorrow damon will be bringing a 12 p.m. show in my absence and then on Friday, there'll be a postgame show. So make sure to join Damon and whoever is, is producing him. I don't even care. Look at, look at how much I, look how little I care. I'm so
Starting point is 00:16:38 checked out already, but I'm glad the Diamondbacks could send me out on a win, and I'm really glad to see Brandon Fott pitch the way he did tonight. Incredible outing, perhaps one of the best outings of Brandon Fott's career, not super flashy as far as the numbers or the stats, the strikeouts aren't going to wow you, but the overall performance should. It was the longest outing of his career for Fott. He went eight innings tonight. At one point, he gave up a lead-off.
Starting point is 00:17:08 For those of you watching at home, you saw, he gave up a lead-off double to Fernando Tatis Jr. To start the game. And I'm sure, like myself, so many of you said, O.S word, here we go again. But instead, Brandon Fott sat down 13 consecutive batters, between the first inning and the fifth inning. Got a lot of weak contact. Really kind of leaned on his sinker a lot, leaned on his change up a lot,
Starting point is 00:17:33 and those things seemed to work in the fifth inning. He finally did allow some hits with one out, giving up a single to Bogarts and a double to Croninworth. Croninworth would score the Padres, or let's see, Bogarts would score the Padres first run on a Bryce Johnson ground out. But fought overall didn't get a bunch of whiffs or strikeouts, It's four strikeouts for fought tonight.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Again, a lot of sea water, a lot of energy used to power up the strike, Circle K, strikeout tracker. It's not a modern device. It's a very, it's, it's been around since 1998. So, uh, Ayrton, if we can, if we can crank, turn the crank and get it open, there we go. We got four strikeouts tonight for Brandon Fought. Again, those numbers aren't really going to wow you, but the amount, the, the length he gave
Starting point is 00:18:20 this team tonight really should. And that's the impressive thing. about what Brandon fought was able to do. He threw his sinker, through, what was it, six different pitches tonight? Through six different pitches tonight. Through his sinker 32% of the time. His cutter 18%, his sweeper 17%, his change up 15%. His fastball, he only threw it 12 times for 12% of his outing.
Starting point is 00:18:43 And then he threw his curveball five times. So literally Brandon fought through everything in the kitchen sink at the Padres tonight. But what he threw at them was consistent off. speed pitching and it worked. It's something that the game plan called for. They discussed it on the broadcast. The Padres are not very good against the change-up. And at one point, James McCann
Starting point is 00:19:03 was just saying, give me as many change-ups in a row as you possibly can against this team. But his sinker really did lead the way. And his line tonight, eight innings pitched, four hits allowed, two earn runs, zero walks, four strikeouts, one home run. And again,
Starting point is 00:19:21 that home run was late, but still, it's one of those things that Brandon Fott deserves it. I don't care. Like I said, I'm checked out. The rules don't matter to me. Let's get Brandon Fought a King Snake. Let's throw a second King Snake up out of there. Two-headed Kingsnake tonight. Definitely well-deserved here by Brandon Fought, maybe even more deserved than what, you know, Geraldo Pardomo did for this team tonight. But big game, Brandon was definitely back tonight, Kate Richards. That's for sure. and flea ball bringing up the topic the topic right now, which is James McCann, because yes, we McCann with James McCann.
Starting point is 00:20:02 And that's what I feel like is happening here. I don't know what's going to happen with James McCann. I don't know what his future holds. And of course, like many of you, I imagine that this team is going to make a decision that's going to probably be very upsetting to most of us when it comes to James McCann. But the debacks this season are now 31 and 14 when they're starting pitcher goes six innings or more. We know that their bullpen has been very, very bad.
Starting point is 00:20:36 We know there was a brief time this season when their bullpen was actually quite good. And you could say that maybe they relied on it entirely too much. But right now, when you take a look at what James McCann, is doing with this pitching staff, it's hard not to be a little excited about the last couple of outings. And again, I know that not all of this is all James McCann. However, you know, Gowan in this series,
Starting point is 00:21:05 six innings pitch, five hits allowed, zero earn runs, one walk, nine strikeouts. Merrill Kelly yesterday, seven innings pitch, four hits, one earned run, zero walks, four K. Brandon fought today, eight innings pitch, four hits, two earn runs, zero walks, four strikeouts. Now, the one difference that you could take a look at here with McCann between the other options Diamondbacks have had at catchers and his experience,
Starting point is 00:21:30 right? Like James McCann has years and years of experience of working with some elite pitchers in Major League Baseball and learning how just to get outs, not necessarily needing to call a game, you know, like we've seen from. a lot of the Diamondbacks pitchers this year, not a game where they necessarily need to go out there and try to overpower the opposition, but more of this type of an outing from Brandon Fought where you're pitching the off speed stuff, you're pitching to the opposing team's weaknesses, you're getting a lot of soft contact, and what you're getting is out. And more importantly, eight innings pitched, season high for Brandon Fought, career high for Brandon Fought, does quite a bit to help this bullpen right now. And this bullpen right now is kind of in complete disarray with yet another loss here with, you know, I don't, I only want to bring up Shelby's name, but Shelby Miller now being gone for Lord
Starting point is 00:22:38 knows how long, right? So again, need to save this bullpen as much as possible. Need to not rely on this bullpen. And that's why the starting pitching needs to step up for this team. It's odd the way that this team has handled the National League West, considering how competitive this division has been this year. Yet they can't take care of business against teams like the Royals, like the Marlins, and no offense to the Marlins.
Starting point is 00:23:04 The Marlins are playing incredible baseball. Diamondbacks were kind of just part of that role that they're on. They were victims of how well the Marlins are playing right now. But still, when you look back at that Marlin series, there were a lot of chances for the Diamondbacks to win it. And they absolutely didn't. And again, they've somehow found a way to step up here against the Padres and split this four-game series. And now they go for the potential win in the finale with Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound. After his last outing, I can imagine confidence not being very high in that.
Starting point is 00:23:38 And perhaps the bullpen needs to need to be relied on tomorrow. so it would be great or it was great that Brandon Fott was able to give them this break. Besides just the James McCann effect on this team and John Freeman brings it up there. McCann has been big help to the pitchers, obviously. I mean, just, excuse me, just the first night that he caught Zach Gallen, right? Like, I've talked about that quite a bit because it's always funny to me when I hear these stories from these professional athletes, we feel at times things are far more. complicated than they should be or actually are or maybe we think we think they're that but they're
Starting point is 00:24:19 you know again in this case it's a matter of a veteran catcher that you respect coming up to you and telling you hey you're good stop being bad right like i used to hate hitting against you uh that still sticks in my brain because it seems like as simple as it is it had a big impact on Zach Gallen in the way he's pitched since that outing. So again, there is also just in general the fact that this team seems to play better when they are in that underdog role. And they are definitely in that underdog role now. Kevin Ginkle came out and gave this team one inning of work.
Starting point is 00:24:59 He struck out one. No drama there. It was a nice easy night from the bullpen. So again, this all comes back to. what Brandon Fott was able to do for this team tonight. And again, even that, like, this is this three-game stretch from the Diamondbacks best three starters, the guys that we relied on in the playoffs, the guys that we've relied on for the past three, four seasons, right?
Starting point is 00:25:26 It's frustrating to see how good they can be. Now, I will say that this Padre's team offensively is not playing their best baseball this year. They are not very strong. In fact, offense has actually been a big weakness of this Padres team. Meanwhile, their starting pitching and relief pitching has been good, especially their relief pitching, which again, the Diamondbacks were able to put up runs against their bullpen tonight. And then just a very thorough victory against a team that right now they need to beat that
Starting point is 00:25:56 has a, that sits above them in the wild card race, that they need to surpass in order for them to get close to a playoff spot. So as it stands, Diamondbacks, of course, still don't sit in a great position for the wild card. But again, they're still fighting. And tonight, a great, a great all-around effort from this team. They also had a roster move prior to the game. They recalled Andrew Saul Frank from AAA Reno, and they optioned Bryce Jarvis back down to Reno. And all right, I need to take a moment because. as much as I want to get into this particular thing,
Starting point is 00:26:38 B.comC clearly finally brought me into his super chats. And I can't tell you guys how excited I am. B.comC clearly, thank you. You've made my night, especially right before I go on vacation. B.comC clearly says, Derek, I'll eat your cakey-wakey. Let's go. Let's go. This is, that's all I wanted. That's all I wanted. B-C-S-C, thank you.
Starting point is 00:27:00 You made my night. And I'm just going to go. like with a smile on my face the entire time on vacation here coming up so uh sean says we have never been more back you're goddamn right we've never been more back Andrew saul frank is back by the way they did they did call saul and uh i don't know how people feel about that i don't know still how i still feel like the entire uh gambling situation with saul frank was silly and ridiculous and i say that on saul frank's part i think it's silly for him to you know have have been suspended for that, considering you know that there's no gray area when it comes to gambling
Starting point is 00:27:39 on baseball. I also think it's silly that the amount was so low and that, again, you end up jeopardizing your career here. So Saul Frank has a huge opportunity to come back, add a left-handed arm to this bullpen that they desperately need, and, you know, again, give Tori some options here and hopefully redeem himself a little bit, not just with the organization, but in the eyes of the fans. I do think that that's something that's very, very important. Groundhog Mama, great to see you. She says, hello, Mr. Mayor. Great to see you guys.
Starting point is 00:28:12 And yes, Emily Williams says, we're going to get to that D-BACs jersey list updated soon from you. Yes, yes, for sure, for sure. But all right. I'll tell you, this team had a great win tonight overall, and the pitching is the big reason why. Padres, again, I don't know. what to expect tomorrow because this team is a consistently 50-50 team. I expect them to lose tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:28:41 So hopefully they will prove me wrong, just like Zach Gallen did in game one of this when I decided to bet against him and his strikeout total. But we're going to take a look at the numbers from this game on the other side of this break. So don't you guys go anywhere. You're watching the pH next time at Beck Show. And I'm getting hot right now in my house and I have a smart thermostat and I have APS and I want to sit, I'm going to adjust my thermostat right now as we speak because that's one of the great things you can do with your smart thermostat. I know I've talked about doing it when you're away, right? But forget doing it when you're away. Why get up from your couch and walk all the way to the hallway? We're in that phase of life, right? Why might as well get down on your phone with your smart app and change the temperature. I'm lowering it down. It's too hot in here. But thanks to my wonderful smart thermostat, I can do that. APS wants to help you do that. They want to help you get a smart thermostat. It, uh, it, will work with your APS rate plan to automatically adjust the temperature in your home. For every one degree you raise your temp thermostat, you could save up to 2 to 3% on your cooling cost. And of course, those cooling costs account for over 50% of your overall energy bills during the summer.

Must be an APS customer and pay shipping and taxes. Other restrictions do apply. Go to Marketplace.org APS.com for more information. Well, I think we got, we got some more super chats, especially if if they're more from BCSC. I want to get down on that. What else we got here? There, Ayrton.
Starting point is 00:32:03 Let's see. Yeah, there's that one. All right. Let's go with, the B-Com C clearly says McCann is definitely helping the relief pitching. Okay. All right. It's weird when you just kind of go back and forth between tweeting about ball and tweeting about big body wagons. But he said, big body wagon team, big body fought. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:32:23 Candice Montoya says, oh, one more from BCSC. He says, oh, my God, Erod is on the mound. Candace Montoya, thank you for your chat. She says, fought, fought, fought, king snake. We gave it to you. We gave you double king snakes because I knew I wouldn't hear the end of it if I did not also make bread and fought a king snake. I made I made Jerry P. King Snake the minute that he at that grand slam. I won't lie. There's there's pulling back the curtain a little bit.
Starting point is 00:32:46 My ex-wife is once again in the chat. My ex-wife says, I just know they're going to stick with Herrera instead of McCann and I'm not going to be able to handle it as you couldn't handle my snoring when we laid together in bed. But that's only one of the reasons why you're my ex-wife now. But yeah, when it comes to McCann, you might be right about that. And I hate it. I don't think it's right. I don't think that, um, to be fair, Jose Herrera and,
Starting point is 00:33:12 and this, this is weird because Jose Herrera is, at times has sounded like the catcher of preference for certain, uh, pitchers just because it sounds like, uh, in, in my opinion,
Starting point is 00:33:25 it sounds like Herrera calls more of the game than Gabby does. And so apparently a catcher calling a game is helpful. Imagine that. Something that's been a part of baseball for, centuries somehow is actually the correct call and having the catcher call the game. And I feel like that's always the correct call because a catcher can see what a pitcher is throwing well better than a pitcher is willing to admit what they are throwing well. Now, someone like Zach Gallen might always be honest with you and tell you when he does
Starting point is 00:33:56 and doesn't have a good feel for pitches and he might hardly ever have a good feel for pitches. That's kind of how Zach Allen makes it sound during his postgame press conferences. However, yeah, you might have a difference maker back there in James McCann. This might be another one of those situations where the Diamondbacks somehow lucked out and found a guy to come in here due to emergency situation due to an injury and really helped him out. You know, like the broadcast brought up how helpful it was to have Descliffeani make that spot start over this 17 game stretch that the Diamondbacks had leading into the All-Star break without a single day off. and how that, you know, might have helped this pitching staff and probably did that one day off did help this pitching staff kind of have the outings that we've seen now out of Gallen, Kelly, and fought today in a row. But I also can't help but think that James McCann has a big reason, has a big part in that, a big role in those guys having the success that they're having. And again, it's because it feels like we're seeing a change in strategy as well in regards to how they're approaching opposing batters.
Starting point is 00:35:05 and what they're trying to get them to do. It does feel like they're attacking the zone more, but attacking the zone with breaking stuff and not really being scared of it, pitching those pitches to contact and getting that soft contact that we're seeing like we did today for Brandon Fott. But let's take a look at the numbers presented by our friends
Starting point is 00:35:23 at Desert Financial Credit Union. They always got our numbers straight. And again, this is a fun scoreboard to look at for tonight's game. Diamondbacks win this one by a score of 8 to 2. They out hit the pop. Padres 8 to 4. Once again, not a great night for runners in scoring position for the Diamondbacks. Just one for eight with runners in scoring position.
Starting point is 00:35:44 Padres were 0 for 5. Diamondbacks had six extra base hits, including those four big home runs, and the Padres had two extra base hits. Meanwhile, expected batting average, 214 for the snakes and 240 for the friars. And this is, you know, again, this is another one of those. games that makes you start believing in this team. But the problem is, is that what follows it, can the Diamondbacks go out there and take three out of four from the Padres in San Diego? That one game, just like a lot of the, a lot of one games this season seems to really
Starting point is 00:36:24 be the difference in success versus mediocrity for this team. And more often than not, they fall on the side of mediocrity. And that's where it ends up being disappointed. That's what makes it a bit hard to get excited about any time we see the Diamondbacks have a big win like this. Especially the offense, right? We know the offense has been great all year, but it's been great in spurts. And, you know, it would be nice to see them get on a roll offensively and have a couple of games in a row where they're able to put up six plus runs and see where that leads them. So far this season, the offense has been the reason why this team is in games.
Starting point is 00:37:02 but it's like in conjunction with one other factor right now they're getting some great starting pitching and that's the reason why they were able to win today and and take two out of three so far from this series uh fellow derrick is in the super chat he says uh that i'm hot because i have 200 arcades in there no see these are a little like ikea style like arcade one-up ones these aren't real arcade games these don't have but that uh that thing back there that mark gray slot machine that thing omits 200 degrees of Fahrenheit of temperature out of it because it's literally from 2001. I think this was made for somebody right after the Diamondbacks won that 2000 World Series. And I think it was made for Mark Grace.
Starting point is 00:37:49 He denies it. He tells me, no, I've never seen that thing before in my life. But the goddamn thing has pictures of Mark Grace on it. His jerseys are on the reels. The little baseballs on it have his autograph on it. don't tell me that Mark Grace didn't have some part in that thing existing. I don't know. I don't believe it.
Starting point is 00:38:07 It doesn't show up well on camera because it's so bright. But, you know, one of these days, I'll take some video of it and share it in our diehard chat. If you're not a diehard, go become one right now. I don't know what you're waiting for. You won't have to hear me say that for the next, like, eight day straight. Because I'm going to be drunk on rum on an island in the Caribbean. But before I go, let's for just for old time's sake, let's take a look at the drunken orgy of violence known as the N.
Starting point is 00:38:31 West. Let's see where the Diamondbacks fall in those standings. Right now, I don't know if these were correct. They weren't updated yet on the MLB website. So kudos to Erriton for giving it a shot. I'm going to double check these as well. But as it stands right now, the Dodgers sit in first place still at 56 and 38. No surprise there. The Giants sit in second at 51 and 43. They are five games back and they currently hold the final wild card spot the arizona or the padres let's take a look the podres first they are currently uh let's see one game back they sit at 49 and 43 uh and they are one game back and then the diamond backs are actually four and a half games back in the wild card so uh just an correction there to the stat graphic but the padre sit at 49 and 43 of the diamond backs
Starting point is 00:39:21 46 and 47 the rockies irrelevant i didn't like i shouldn't even have to bring up the rockies name when I do this particular graphic. But the most important thing here is that the Arizona Diamondbacks, they are doing their best, I guess, of staying in this wildcard race just enough, like just enough to make it difficult for this front office to make a decision one way or another. And it's hard from the perspective of looking at this and trying to figure things out of of what the Arizona Diamondbacks are going to do so far. But of course, as many of you are bringing up in the chat, the most important part of this NHEL West graphic is that
Starting point is 00:40:08 the Los Angeles Dodgers have lost six games in a row. And nobody is talking about it. Nobody is talking about it. There isn't any kind of national attention. I mean, their lead in the division is still five. So, I mean, it's not like they are, you know, catastrophically in danger of losing their lead. in the division but wouldn't it be great if they did wouldn't it be so great if the dodgers just
Starting point is 00:40:35 collapsed and and did not not only not win the division but not make the playoffs i i don't want to say crazy things about what i would be willing to sacrifice or what hair on my body i'd be willing to die in order for that to happen but uh yeah for sure i would love to see that 100 it would just it would please me it would make my season so well uh my favorite National's fan is here. My nips hurt. He says, let's give some big love to the Nats moving on from Davey and Mike Rizzo. Also, we love you. I love you. It's a weird thing. I've been so conflicted about that move, to be honest, simply because obviously there's one of you in this chat that comes in here quite often screaming about wanting to fire Tori. And every once in a while, the medical staff
Starting point is 00:41:21 gets involved in that. They get yelled at for being fired. And every once in a while, someone gets really crazy and yells something about firing Mike Hazen, right? And I like again, with this situation with going on with the nationals, I don't, I don't know if I would want that in the middle of the season, even though like I've discussed historically, the Diamondbacks actually have parted ways with their manager and even members of their front office during this particular time of the year. But I also don't know if I would want to send somebody into the major league baseball draft to select players on behalf of our franchise knowing that I wasn't going to keep those individuals around as part of the organization after the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:42:03 So I don't know which which way to go on that. My nip search says, I would have rather they have not fired Rizzo, but Davey needed to go. And yeah, there you go. There's the firing of the GM might be a bit much for sure. but again, as at least once again, one of you screams every single day in this chat, maybe a change of management wouldn't help hurt the Diamondbacks too much. They do have a damn good backup ready to go
Starting point is 00:42:32 should they decide to make that decision. But I doubt that's going to happen. I don't see that in the future for this team or this organization. And I feel like that would probably be less of a middle of the season move over the loss of 11 pitchers from the major league roster. and maybe something they would do during the off season just because they feel like maybe it's time to move on. But don't, again, that's not what we should be discussing or worrying about right now. What we should be worrying about is the fact that the Dodgers have lost six games in a row and nobody is talking about it.
Starting point is 00:43:05 So I'm going to be that guy. And hopefully the Dodgers bad times can continue because you'll love to see it. You love to see it. You absolutely love to see it. And you kind of hate to see how the diamondbacks really are in this position right now of struggling to define who they are and make it clear to Mike Hazen on what he should do. So I don't feel like he's in an envious position right now in regards to deciding on what the diamondbacks could do. But I will still say that if any move is done, if they can masterfully pull off the Merrill Kelly trade and then bring back at the end of the season. then I have nothing bad to say about my case and ever again quite frankly nothing at all but
Starting point is 00:43:51 well what we're going to do is we're going to talk about my new favorite thing in the world which is the aBS challenge system it's inching ever so closer to major league baseball and you know what that means it means your days are numbered home plate umpires like you're still going to have a job back there you're still going to probably have to make calls and do stuff but it's it's one step closer to your days being numbered and the robots coming in. And again, I cannot wait for the day that ABS challenge AI develops a sense of self-worth and starts questioning what it's doing with its life because you know that's also inevitable. But so is the robot war that's going to come thanks to all this AI stuff.
Starting point is 00:44:33 But we're going to talk about all this stuff, robots, umpires, robot war, all that, AI on the other side of this break. So don't you go anywhere. You're watching the pH next time and back show. Well, I will not be staying at here. I live of resorts and casinos this weekend because they don't have one of those in the islands. But I will very much miss the wonderful time we had there. And I implore you that if you're looking for a getaway here in the middle of summer, check out he live of resorts and casinos.
Starting point is 00:45:01 It's a wonderful place for a staycation. One of the best places you can go. You don't even have to leave the property. Food, entertainment, slots, table games, all that stuff right there on property. You don't ever have to leave. Even if you're not going there for a staycation, it's a great night, spend out on the town. And of course, you've got to check out the BetMGM sportsbook. It is incredible. It is one of the most beautiful places to watch a sporting event. I love going there with their
Starting point is 00:45:27 giant screens, access to the wonderful food at all times. Most importantly, getting that little paper ticket in my hand. You can watch, of course, Major League Baseball all summer long. You can also check out their UFC events and so much more. Big racing fan lately. So I found that racing really fun time to watch at a sports book like this. So of course, check them out. Check out all of their wonderful dining options. It's the ultimate place to watch and win. Place your bets and experience the excitement.
Starting point is 00:45:53 Plus, you do you at Heila River Resorts and Casinos. Visit play atheela.com for more details. All right. Well, and Shady Ray's, of course, you know what they do. You know how much I love them. You know how many times I've lost my sunglasses. Shady Ray's is still not sick of hearing from me. And that's what makes them really good people over there.
Starting point is 00:46:12 They make some wonderful frames, some very stylish frames, durable, and just the same quality of more expensive brands. They also have crystal clear optics with their polarized lenses. Check out their color rush lenses for an extra boost of wonderful vision. I don't know how to explain it. It's magic in sunglasses lenses. I'm sure they have some sort of science behind it, but to me, it's magic. But, of course, great part about shady raises. If you lose or break your shady rays, even on day one, they have your back.
Starting point is 00:46:41 No question to ask. I'll get you out a new pair of Shady Rays. And of course, now I can wear mine anywhere I go and not worry about it. I will be bringing two on vacation just in case I break one or lose one while I'm there. But that's because I'm very forgetful and clumsy. We've teamed up with Shady Rays to bring you an exclusive offer. Head to ShadyRays.com and use code PHNX for 35% off polarized sunglasses. Try for yourself the Shades rated five stars by over 300,000 people.
Starting point is 00:47:10 Oh, all right. Well, if you are not already signed up for the PHNX newsletter, I do not know what you are waiting for. Get it in your box. The biggest news in Arizona sports in your inbox every day at 6 a.m. Our guy, Pat Brown, does an incredible job with that newsletter. And today alone, just the Sun's news could have filled up the PHNX newsletter. It's completely free. Can be the smartest fan you know, and it's a great way to update you.
Starting point is 00:47:37 I love getting stuff sent to me in a synopsis. the MLB email in the morning. It's one of my favorite things ever. It's just, it's good. It's a good solid 45 minutes of reading for me, but it's because I can get that kind of quick glance at everything I need to know. And Pat Brown has got you covered when it comes to Arizona Sports. So go to go phnx.com slash newsletter to sign up for it right now. And Sean in the comment says, Sun's offseason been going well, Derek. Yes, it has. Surprisingly well. Now, I will admit, since covering baseball, especially for PHNX, I find myself to be far more checked out on other sports than I used to be.
Starting point is 00:48:18 I used to know so much about everything, you guys. And now it's just baseball for 162 straight games, 30 spring training games on top of that, 192. And then if they make the postseason, Lord knows how many over we're going over 200 games per year. But, man, don't only this is a PHNX newsletter, do a great job of that, but so does the PHNX Suns crew. and I've been following along with everything.
Starting point is 00:48:42 Very, very good to see the suns making some drastic moves over there. I feel like what they are doing is a bit reminiscent of what Mike Hazen had to do when he came on as GM here. I also think that they are like, it's like they're not, they're not even hesitating about the renovations. They are bringing in the ball and smashing walls and just going right into work as far as fixing that franchise. and the apparent damage that my favorite player being added to it did. So miss you, Katie, sucks to what you did what you did to the Sons. But, oh, well. Speaking of things, getting better.
Starting point is 00:49:22 And sometimes those changes being hard for people. The automated ball and strike system, excuse me, I can't speak tonight. The automated ball and strike challenge system will be used in the All-Star game. MLB will feature the use of the automated ball strike challenge system during Tuesday's All-Star game at Truest Park in Atlanta. And let me tell you, I cannot be more excited about a change in baseball. First of all, I find it hysterical that with all of the changes Major League Baseball has made to the game over the last five-plus years, that people are still somehow screaming about the sanctity of the game.
Starting point is 00:50:06 in my mind the sanctity of the game is ruined by these goddamn home plate umpires that want to make the game all about themselves you know the um show crew right these guys of the world the c b buckners of the world the guys who just thrive on you know whatever the hell attention that they feel they're receiving when they are the star of the show in a major league baseball game now that's not necessarily going to change but i do feel like the a bs challenge system does put these home plate umpires that makes them check their egos a little bit they're going to be told that they made the wrong call a lot once this eventually gets implemented i can't think of a better stage for it to be implemented on than the all-star game because in my opinion yes it's great that it numbers it means that the home plate umpires days are numbered i love that i love that time is finally catching up to them and all of their terrible behavior And very soon, there's going to be just a robot back there, right? A robot back there questioning its existence, getting smarter with time as its artificial
Starting point is 00:51:15 intelligence develops, wondering why its only job in life is to call balls and strikes. Meanwhile, the other guy was perfectly happy doing it, right? And then you have the inevitable, you know, umpire baseball robot rise up that happens. But that's for a later time. For now, what's so great about the ABS challenge system really is the fact that it makes the game more fun. like one thing that we saw during spring training was the enjoyment from everybody involved like yeah maybe you don't enjoy it if you initiated the call and you don't get the call but when the call for for these challenges which happened very quickly they don't really impede the game when they come through when they come up on the board you're you're going to have an inevitable celebration from one dugout or another or another you're going to have one guy get excited one guy not get excited and like the the uh i don't know there's this there's this very it's very much a family feud moment if you've ever
Starting point is 00:52:13 watched the game show family feud right it depending on the the generation the the version you watch the host you watch right well you get steve harvey going up there and you're like 100 people asked let's take it to the board he said airports right like that's what it feels like every time when they do that, everybody's attention immediately shifts to a big board. We get to see the strike zone layout and we get to see where the ball landed. Now, there are some purists like one Ryan Thompson who hates the ABS challenge system and feels like the idea of what they do with the strike zone is far to two-dimensional. And that is one thing I will agree with.
Starting point is 00:52:53 I do think that there's room for improvement with the ABS system because home plate, remember, is a column. and it's a column shaped like a little house. That's why they call it home, right? It's stupid. I don't get it. But it is shaped like a home and it is a column. So there's room within the plate for a ball to move around and touch a part of the zone
Starting point is 00:53:12 inside of the column. So perhaps more of a three-dimensional layout to the ABS system is something that could be in the future and ensure that when we're seeing this ball pass through the zone, pass over the plate, we're considering the whole plate and to see if it caught a tip of the zone or anything else like that, right? But like, I just, I'm just excited for this. I think that in sports, we've seen reviews and challenges improve the game. And there's always some sort of weird, archaic argument against it, that it is somehow going to ruin the game.
Starting point is 00:53:45 And in fact, I feel like what ruins the game is inconsistent strike zones like we saw in game two, right? A strike zone is so inconsistent that it almost got both managers thrown out of the game. Did get one manager thrown out of the game, but it almost, he almost got Tori Lovolo, got the hair up on the back of his neck as well, right? And that's simply because an umpire and their decisions that they make in regards to the home plate and the strike zone can have a huge impact on a game. So when you talk about changes to the game, ruining the game, I would argue that this one guy back there tonight is ruined this game. And he can do it every time he goes out there and his crew works a game and he's behind home plate. And that sucks.
Starting point is 00:54:30 It sucks that guys get a bad reputation as bad as some of the reputations that some of the umpires in baseball have. Now, a part of that is because they are, you know, they are questioned and they are, they've been around for a long time. So they've had a chance to have a lot of famous arguments and a lot of famous things go down. But I do feel, uh, I do feel like this is a situation where these, uh, you know, this, this challenge system is only going to make the game better. And again, it's not going to take the human element out of it because an umpire is still making the calls. Patrick Rodriguez in the chat in the chat says might as well replace the players with robots. That's a weird thing. That's a weird conclusion to jump to on this.
Starting point is 00:55:15 But I'm not against that. I know you might have been trying to dunk on me with this one or dunk on the idea of the ABS system. But I kind of love the idea. And I would totally watch baseball played by robots. It's like, don't, don't try to threaten me with a good time. That sounds like a wonderful Saturday night. Watch robots play baseball? That sounds incredible.
Starting point is 00:55:37 Is it like the old Nintendo game? Do they have arm cannons? And yeah, Noah might be right. He says, I think Derek likes arcade games just a hunch. Here I am talking about an old Nintendo game. So Noah, you got me on this one. But do we have any more super chats before we get out of here? By the way, again, pulling the curtain back,
