Starting point is 00:00:00 It's over. The Arizona Diamondbacks 2026 season is officially over, and we're not ready to do this. Don't you go anywhere, we're starting right now. No skis today. It is a ski-less day, but this is the PHNXD Backs Postgame show live from Studio K, presented by our friends at Circle K.
Starting point is 00:00:36 I don't even know where to start. I don't even know where to start. I guess I'll start with I am Derek Montia. occasionally known as your mayor of P.HNX. I'm joined by not the D-BACs dog, but the bad boy of PHNX, Damon, Farrow, on the ones and twos. I don't even know if he wants to have the dog nickname assigned to him today.
Starting point is 00:01:00 After all that we've been through in this 162 game season, here we are at the end. Two games out of the post season, once again on the outside looking in. We have a lot to discuss and a lot of sadness to unpack, but this show is brought to you by our friends at GameTime. Go download the GameTime app, create an account and use code PHNX for $20 off your first purchase to go watch,
Starting point is 00:01:31 I guess, anything but baseball right now. Terms to apply, maybe save it for next year. I don't know. Diamondbacks lose today to the San Diego Padres by a score of 9 to 4. they finish the season 10 games above 500, and they finished the season two games out of a postseason spot after the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays today and the Diamondbacks lose to the Padres.
Starting point is 00:01:59 And the story is that this is it. This is it. I mean, again, I think we're going to address and break down losing this game. I think we're going to address obviously. putting themselves in this position where overall it's another disappointing finish. And again, how managing the managing in game one, like it was game seven of the world series, somehow had a significant impact on how the rest of this series went that they lose to the Padres. But yes, that's the story today.
Starting point is 00:02:38 The Diamondbacks lose by a score of 9 to 4. And again, they did it on a day where the Phillies game got started a little early due to some rain, inclement weather in the area. And they, the Diamondbacks basically had to deal with the fact that before they even started this game, they looked up at the scoreboard and saw that the Phillies were up, I think, two to nothing at the time. And they never, the Phillies essentially never looked back. So there's a lot, though, that we need to discuss when it comes. to how that played out. Damon, I'm just sad overall here for the lack of fight in this team at the end.
Starting point is 00:03:24 I think that's fair to be sad about. I know they lost 9 to 4. I know that they probably gave up around the 7th inning when they saw that the Phillies had in fact clinched that wildcard spot and what they did in this game was essentially meaningless. But the very first thing I can't help. help to think and to address on this show is, had the Phillies not lost, would this outcome have been the same? Would the Diamondbacks have still lost to San Diego? I know that things turned on them late in this game.
Starting point is 00:03:58 I know that perhaps some decisions might have gone differently, but they brought Ryan Nelson into this game. They brought Justin Martinez into this game. They mismanaged this whole series, yet when it came down to them, again winning their way into the playoffs, which I know it was out of their hands and I know that before this game was over that they were done, I still find it absolutely pathetic that this team was not able to win today. And I think that's probably the biggest disappointment of this entire season. I, you know, I know if the Diamondbacks, if this was like a two, two game and then all of a sudden they just didn't care in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings,
Starting point is 00:04:46 and the Padres ran the score up. You could explain it away a little bit easier. You could explain it much easier. And they did. I mean, don't get me wrong. The Padres did tack on runs there late because the Diamondbacks did have a tie game. They tied it up in the top of the 7th at 4-4.
Starting point is 00:05:02 But that's pretty much when they looked up and saw the Phillies were up, what, 7 to 2? And it was in the ninth inning. And then they gave those three runs right back to the Padres and the bottom of the 7th inning. and, you know, it was, of course, Justin Martinez giving up three earned runs for the very first time this entire season. When we needed J-Mart to be his best the most, he wasn't, gave up three hits, three earned runs, four walks. He walked four people in that inning.
Starting point is 00:05:35 And this one just got away from him. I guess I can understand the offense giving up in the eighth and ninth. and then the Diamondbacks then Ryan Nelson allowed two more runs in the bottom of the eighth but it's just it's just an incredible way to end the season when
Starting point is 00:05:58 essentially you just needed to win the series to you know what needed to take you needed to sweep the series that's what you needed to do but you really needed to win two out of three and you couldn't even do that Kenneth in the chat is trying to turn Phoenix on Tucson. He says, why can't Phoenix have nice things because they're not Tucson?
Starting point is 00:06:23 Not the time for it, Kenneth. It's not the time or the place for this. I feel like, I feel connected. I feel like we'll have plenty of time in the offseason to turn on each other. Don't you worry? Sean's abandoning us because he's done with baseball and I kind of understand it. We also have, who was it? It just kind of disappeared on me there, but it was a question.
Starting point is 00:06:47 about maybe turning the page too fast here, but, oh, it was Joshua, maybe turning the page too fast, but will we get a full 2027 season? If they like money, we'll get a full 2027 season or as close to it as they can. But, I mean, if the 2027 season is lost, we were talking about, what did they estimate, Damon, $4 to $5 billion in revenue loss? Do you really think that they're going to sacrifice $4 to $5 billion in revenue? They're going to posture like they can. But at the end of the day, neither the MLBPA nor the owners can afford to lose $4 billion next year. Yeah. I mean, just the spring training amount lost is in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Revenue for Arizona and Florida combined. And that's probably going to be lost. We probably won't have a spring training. I still remember a few years back the last time we had a lockout where, for the most part, that lockout kind of happened so suddenly that many people still made their travel. plans to Arizona and still came out here, even though that they came out here to watch spring training baseball that didn't happen. But I'm not so sure because I do feel like this particular lockout has been well publicized and has been something that has people have seen
Starting point is 00:08:02 coming from a long ways away. Really what it comes down to is two things. One, the loss of the season is absolutely Michael Rokicki's fault. Evil Michael right there in the chat. He said evil Michael checking in. This is a sad day. I don't know if it's a sad day for him because this man has trying to, he's been trying to bring down our baseball team since day one of the year. And I, I can't, I don't believe him. I don't believe he says this is a sad day. I feel like he's rejoicing like killer wrecks right now, just having a ball about the fact that this team didn't make it in the postseason. But I will say that again, when it comes to what is happening in 2027, that makes what the Diamondbacks did here that much more frustrating, that much more, I guess,
Starting point is 00:08:47 angering. It's more infuriating because this was kind of an all-in moment for a lot of guys that are on this team that won't be back next year that were here in 2023 to help this team make it to the World Series. And when I'm talking about those guys, I'm talking about guys like Tori Lavello. I'm talking about Zach Gallen. And Zach Gallen did not do much to help this team at all this year. But still, it's like it felt like with this being the end of essentially what seems like this era potentially of Diamondbacks baseball, it would have been very nice for them to try to give it one last run, to run it back one more time.
Starting point is 00:09:28 This offseason is going to be full of changes for baseball. Hopefully we do get a 2027 season, Joshua. But what I will say is that the Diamondbacks need a change and they need, and they're going to have changes, period. It depends on how this whole thing shakes out. But again, like even bringing back Tori Lavallo, I know so many people aren't in favor of that. I know so many people blame this season on Tori.
Starting point is 00:09:55 And I can understand why. I definitely can. You're not going to get argument out of Damon and I consider, even with the Sunday night dinners. You're just not. I think that there were too many opportunities that were squandered. I think that there wasn't a sense of urgency enough for this team. considering what they've already been through.
Starting point is 00:10:15 And we just heard Tori during the post game, you know, press availability, say, talk about learning from this. And I can't help but wonder, did you not learn from 2024 and 2025, specifically 2025 when we got to see two teams play patty cake so that they could both get into the playoffs and leave us on the outside looking in? I felt like those seasons would have taught you a lesson about how every game matters and how important some of those wins are down the stretch. How important it was even in July and August
Starting point is 00:10:49 to be throwing everything into every single win, you know? But what I will also say is that when you hear so many people defend Tori LaVolo, this, you know, from this point on, it's going to be because the shortcomings of this team do not fall on Tori Lovola's shoulders for the most part. The shortcomings of this team fall on the failure to address, positional needs that they had. And not everything works out.
Starting point is 00:11:22 There was a tweet today about the ERAs of pitchers that change teams and how bad they've been since joining their new teams. Two of those pitchers on that list were Casey Mize for the Padres and Clay Holmes. Both guys that the Diamondbacks were attempting to trade for and had very much interest for. Obviously, we don't know about how long, how much they pursued Mize, but we did. do know that they basically had a deal in place for Clay Holmes. And who knows if they make that move, if that move doesn't completely alter this season, right? But something that they needed at the trade deadline desperately was pitching,
Starting point is 00:12:01 and that comes to bite them down in game 161, where they had a bullpen game when their season was on the line. And the fact that since day one of the regular season, not even day one, Damon, I think saying day one is disingenuous, I would say that since January, this man, this dog, this bad boy, PHNX, has been screaming and yelling and clamoring
Starting point is 00:12:32 for the Diamondbacks to do something about their DH first base situation. In fact, saying during the offseason that we were going to have the worst first base DH situation of all of MLB, I don't know if statistically we did, but we got to be down at the bottom because at one point, we were on track for a historically low OPS as far as production from first base was concerned. It was 28th last I saw Derek, which was a couple weeks back.
Starting point is 00:13:01 So it had made its way up from 30th. But I think if you were to look at like teams that were like competing for playoff spots, it's probably certainly last overall, you would have to imagine. How do you not address that? And how do you, I mean, again, financial concerns are what they are, right? But you gave Merrill Kelly $40 million. You gave Zach Gallen over $20 million. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:13:35 I definitely think there were some amazing moves made that you could absolutely praise Mike Hazen for. And then bad moves made. And I don't even know if the bad moves are that terrible considering the track record of the guys that they were bringing back in Merrill and Zach. But again, that even is the definition of insanity once again, right? Going back to Maryland, Zach, instead of perhaps trying something new, they did that with Michael Soroka with a $7.5 million deal for this year, and it worked out splendidly. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:12 But I will say I understand a lot of the criticism thrown the way of Mike Hazen for not addressing those needs and the criticism thrown towards Tori for some of the management of this team. But I will still say that when it comes to how, So people, and again, you're going to hear this. You'll probably hear this from this guy without his sunglasses on. You'll probably hear it from a lot of other media people here in the Valley. But the job he did with this team, the job he did when his roster at times had three rookies
Starting point is 00:14:42 as part of the starting lineup, which again is not part of his decision making. And the way that this team not only played in so many one-run games but had so many comeback wins this year is something that Tori should be credited for. right but the problem being is that there was still plenty to criticize tory for especially in this particular series and and i feel like that's probably more of the focus or what should be the focus right now than the body of work over the course of the season because damon and i will absolutely be breaking that down you know further as as this offseason progresses and we have to figure out ways to fill our show with content when our baseball team isn't playing anymore
Starting point is 00:15:25 but what I will say is that, I mean, I don't know from a lot of the questionable decisions being made as far as who is in the lineup. I don't know if that is to Tories to blame because we know that it's a group assignment essentially when it comes to deciding starting lineups and, you know, what they're going to do with their starting rotation and such. But I still think considering how many injuries they've had, considering all the adversity that they face this year, this team fought. and they fought up until the bitter end. It just sucks that you had so many moments where it did feel like the way this team was managed or the way that this roster was put out on the field definitely was a detriment, right? Yeah, Tori is really good at, I think, culture building and culture setting
Starting point is 00:16:14 and being like kind of a good vibes manager and whatnot. That's part of the reason the Dyingbacks were, I think, in it all year long and were able to go on this final stretch. but he definitely has his faults in terms of in-game managing, and I think that reared its ugly head yesterday in game 161, and it's why a lot of people are very, very upset with Tori, which is understandable as well. Like, not everybody's, you know, like good at everything.
Starting point is 00:16:38 And Tori's certainly a little bit better, I think, at the relationship-building aspect of managing than he is at the actual X's and O's impact. But I also don't think managers have maybe all that much impact on a day-to-day game basis. it's more so on your players to perform and we didn't get that consistently all year either. So the blame truthfully lies somewhere in the middle. It's on everybody.
Starting point is 00:17:03 You know, everybody could have done just a little bit better and this team would have been in the playoffs this year. Don't worry. Don't worry. We're going to play the blame game. We're going to play the blame game before we get out of here. Also, Derek, I do have the answer.
Starting point is 00:17:15 I found it for us. The Dinembacks are third to last in OPS. out of the first base position in this season, ahead of the Seattle Mariners and ahead of the Cleveland Guardians. They are at minus 2.3.4. There it is. David in the chat says, stop making excuses for management.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Who was I making, was I making excuses for management? They're the ones who draft players and sign free agents. They had the number two wildcarts spot at one point and pissed it away. I felt like I was kind of saying it was more on the general manager than Tori because of those exact decisions. So I'm glad we agree when it comes to that. I think some people just want like a lot of anger.
Starting point is 00:18:05 I understand people having anger for sure. No, no, I understand people having anger. But I'm saying I think that what they, they almost want me and you to be angry. Like they're they're like, oh, you guys aren't angry enough. Yeah. You know what I mean? And it's like, trust me. We are, but we just have to do this.
Starting point is 00:18:19 And also we talk about these losses all the time. So we're not just going to crash out, you know, a middle of a show. like yeah like we wouldn't just go rip a bunch of balloons down off the wall and start stomping on them once the diamond backs were eliminated from playoff contention like one of us may have done during the live watch alone god no i i i i i that would be insane behavior what what what what minute mark was that at like like two 26 for those of you that want to go back and watch me have a tantrum what kind of animal would do something like that me me and i'll do it again because not all of those balloons were popped and i still have some anger left in my heart when it comes to watching this team's season end right
Starting point is 00:19:00 before our very eyes. Before we move on and actually talk about this game, Damon, I just got, there's one thing that I'm still hung up on. And again, I know this game was tied at 4-4 after the top of the seventh inning, but my God, I cannot help but think, what if? What if the Phillies lost today? What if the Phillies lost today and the Diamondbacks with an opportunity right in their hand to win this baseball game also lost? I mean, again, Tori said it on the post game. The guys were looking at the scoreboard, right? That's probably when a manager should have stepped up and had them not looking at the scoreboard.
Starting point is 00:19:54 That's probably when a manager should have stepped in and inspired his team to just keep their heads down and keep going and keep chugging along because you never know what's going to happen over there. Right. Obviously, the Phillies winning that game impacted how this game ended. So there's no way for me to sit here and know if the Diamondbacks still would have lost this game had the Phillies lost their game. However, I cannot help but think that this might have gone the same way. and honestly, I might be mad now, but if the Diamondbacks would have had a chance to win their way in with the Phillies getting swept by the raise and blown it,
Starting point is 00:20:33 I don't even know, I don't even know how I would have been able to sit down in this chair and done a show. I don't know how. Yeah, I wouldn't be here. Because I'm already this close to losing it and crashing out once again. But Gabby Moreno did win a batting title. And we're going to talk about that and everything else that happened in this game, I guess briefly.
Starting point is 00:20:56 in the next segment. So don't you guys, of course, go anywhere. You're here with us. You're watching the PHNX sadness podcast. And we'll be right back. Well, like I said on the watch along, my teams are getting their butts kicked. And even my driver's getting his butt kicked.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Literally in real life, he's actually getting into physical altercations and getting beaten up. But that doesn't stop me from rooting for him because he's still in the postseason. And you can witness all of the action at Phoenix Raceway Live, October 16th through the 18th, when the chase returns right here to Phoenix Raceway.
Starting point is 00:21:34 You can watch NASCAR's championship contenders battle at the freeway insurance 500 and one of the most critical races on the road to the championship at our iconic track. The iconic track that I got the amazing opportunity to go drive my own car around, follow the pace car, go into the pits, and I drove my car into the winner circle.
Starting point is 00:21:56 I didn't deserve to be there. My car didn't deserve to be there, but I felt like a winner. And you can too, not only checking out the awesome opportunity that Phoenix Raceway is having for you to drive your own car on the track coming up this weekend, October 3rd, but you also can head out October 16th through the 18th, get the best access in motorsports. Join me Saturday. Join me Sunday. Saturday, they'll be working on the cars in the garages. You can go in the garages, talk to the drivers, talk to the pit crews. It's insane. The access you get with the Desert Diamond Casino Infield Experience. You can also catch the pre-race concept. on Sunday and again check the drivers out before they set off on that iconic race and experience the intensity of the freeway insurance 500 weekend from October 16th through the 18th.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Secure your seats now at phoenix raceway.com. That's phoenix raceway.com. And look, we got extra time now, right? That felt sad to say. But sometimes you got to fill your extra time with projects and a good way to get those projects done around your home is by taking a trip over to the window depot and getting everything you need. The Window Depot, far more than just windows, but they are experts when it comes to windows. They can help you get your windows repaired, replaced,
Starting point is 00:23:09 and of course, help you add value to your home, help you beautify your home, and help you keep that hot air out and that cool air in. Or when this winter comes along, the opposite, your warm air in and the cooled air out. These are all things you can do with the fine folks at the window depot. Of course, they are not a surplus or discount store. They offer new home improvement products at incredible prices every day.
Starting point is 00:23:29 It is the reason why contractors love the window depot they have unbeatable prices and they have in stock job site ready quantities to pick up at all times of course you can shop online at the window depot.com and you can start planning your next project today or you can stop by in store and they have in-house designers that will help you get started on your next project absolutely free of charge and again sometimes we just need that little bit of help when it comes to planning so stop in and let the window depot help you find the right projects for your home and budget the window depot more than just a window store Nate Cleveland in the chat wants to know if we can become a White Sox pod.
Starting point is 00:24:07 Damon and I have determined that when it comes to teams in the playoffs, that we are in fact now rooting for the White Sox and anybody that plays the Dodgers. That's our two teams now. We do have an excellent White Sox podcast that is part of this network. Sean Anderson does some incredible work for the CHGO White Sox folks up there. And again, we are now joining the DNBR Rockies guys as the Squid Words in the air conditioning event watching all of our other teams out there having a good time no i take that back the the rangers got eliminated right the houston astros are in so the rangers the d l ls podcast they're up in the vent
Starting point is 00:24:45 with us while we're looking at the ch geo podcast and uh of course p hl y enjoy themselves out there but damon the diamondbacks did lose this game by nine to four the podreys scored runs in the third fourth fifth sixth seventh and eighth innings it was just in and the diamondbacks did do a good job of having a big seventh inning where they did rally and tie this game back up at four but it just really truly felt like the lack of fire from this team was as Tori addressed a direct result of what was happening on the scoreboard more than what was happening on the field and that sucks it really does suck uh michael saroka did give the diamondbacks a solid start today overall i'm not going to take anything away from
Starting point is 00:25:33 what he did. Tori turned to Juan Murillo in the fifth inning, which I felt like compounded the mistakes made in game two when they turned to Jose Cabrera in a similar spot instead of going to someone like Juan Murillo. And then here they are in a game where they were down and they're going to Juan Murillo for one single out in the fifth inning. Soroka gave the Diamondbacks four and two thirds innings. He did give up three hits, three earned runs. He walked two. He struck out four and he had that one home run. So we do have the circle case strikeout meter, and even though we're not going to go over a lot of stats or numbers,
Starting point is 00:26:10 hopefully we do have at least one circle case strikeout meter with four strikeouts? Maybe. There it is. You know, I'm going to say something on behalf of the circle case strikeout meter. I know that the game plan this entire season was pitching to contact, and honestly with the way that Soroka had a renaissance, this year and Eduardo Rodriguez was our ace. Credit to Jeremy Blyche for implementing his game plan of this team
Starting point is 00:26:40 working more for outs and pitching in the zone more, pitching more to contact, soft contact, and getting outs instead of working for strikeouts and flashier stats. But the strikeout, the strikeout meter deserves better. So I'm going to say, the strikeout meter has been around for a long time. So what I feel like the biggest problem here is
Starting point is 00:26:59 is that the strikeout meter was once the strikeout meter was once, the same strikeout meter for Randy Johnson. You expect this guy to be satisfied with how many times we didn't even fill this meter up halfway, let alone fully and had to add a second meter on for the additional strikeouts that numbered into the teens? It's not fair. Strikeout meter.
Starting point is 00:27:18 This is a new world to him. He doesn't understand phrases like glizzy or things being electric. He takes it literally. He also very much doesn't understand why there's been so few of games that this is the most number. This is the most strikeouts. I think four is probably the one we've used the most this year.
Starting point is 00:27:37 But anyway, we love you circle K strikeout meter. We also love our bullpen, but unfortunately it felt like our bullpen truly did come to being gassed out, being at its end today. And it really did feel like once again the mismanagement in this entire series where the Diamondbacks through everything, Tori Lovolo, through everything at game one. and then was suddenly reluctant to pull out all the stops in games two and three. Felt weird. It felt weird. And it definitely felt like some of those decisions are what cost us. It felt like, you know, the offense kind of laid down kind of flat overall.
Starting point is 00:28:20 But I just, I still can't help but wonder, once again, as I ended the last portion with Damon, and what if they would have lost this game after the, and the Phillies lost too? What if they would have done that? I mean, we would be furious right now. That would be the level of anger that the people in the chat are looking for. Yeah, 100%.
Starting point is 00:28:41 But I think that the fact that the Phillies, you know, they handle their own business and the dying backs weren't, I guess, all that close today, close in general, but not today specifically, that it just is like,
Starting point is 00:28:54 whatever, man, lackluster performance for a lackluster season. I appreciate horns the originator's positivity. He says that we vastly exceeded expectations this year. And I mean, come on. This was a team that during this offseason, Damon, before we made the acquisitions that we made, including, and when I say acquisitions,
Starting point is 00:29:16 I mean bringing back Merrill Kelly, which we called like the greatest heist of the year, which didn't turn out to be that, bringing back Zach Gallen, adding Michael Soroka, right? but it's like there was a time before they did that that we had no idea how they were even going to fill out a five-man starting rotation with what the cost of pitching on the free agent market was and the little tiny amount of money the diamondbacks had to spend. And so again, this is probably going to sound like me defending my Kaysen more to more people. I'm not trying to do that because again, the most money that was spent was spent on Merrill Kelly was spent on Zach Allen.
Starting point is 00:29:54 and those ended up being very, very bad moves for this team. But realistically, again, when you're talking about this team ending the season, 10 games over 500 and finishing two games out of the postseason, as heartbreaking as it is, especially to experience this for the third season in a row, it's still, he's not wrong. This is still a team that exceeded expectations. I thought their postseason hopes would be dead in the month of July. So that's what I thought.
Starting point is 00:30:29 I thought July with the schedule ahead of them and how poorly they played in June was going to be the end of their season right there. So I will give them credit. And as I move farther away from this day, I'm sure I will come back to Earth and do more defending of Tori in my case. And that people in this chat don't like. The defending of Tori will be a little bit easier when he's not pissing people off every single day, I feel like. But we also will speak about him a lot less once he's no longer here, obviously. How is this going to impact Sunday dinners over at the Louisville? Well, it depends on if he's the Angels manager, if he stays in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:31:09 All right. Well, there is one very positive thing that came from today and came from the season. And I'm not, nothing else is really positive. I'm not going to derrick this situation, guys. Even though Damon has been expecting me to derrick this situation, this entire show. And he's probably shocked. I haven't done it yet. I actually have a gun loaded sitting under the table just in case there.
Starting point is 00:31:37 It's insane. He's something I don't like. He's like Grito. He's pointing at me under. It's like me at Grito and Hans Solo over here. But what I will say is that Tori Lavallo's best decision might have been not playing Gabby Moreno today. Because Gabrielle Moreno is your 2026 NL batting. What do we call it?
Starting point is 00:31:59 Champion. Yeah. What? Gabriel Moreno. Our Gabriel Moreno is the 2026 NL batting champion by him not playing today. Louisa Rice also didn't play for the Phillies. He did not have any at bats and his batting average stayed at 311, which is one point better than a rise. And Gabby Moreno will be taking home the 2026 batting title. That is an impressive feat. And again, that is something that we were. I think impressed with early in the season but did not think it was going to be as sustainable as it has been for Moreno. Similar to the bullpen. And it sucks that this bullpen ends up
Starting point is 00:32:41 kind of costing us here in the final two days because they don't deserve for that to be the end of their season with how good they've been this year. But similar, same thing for Gabby. Gabby did not deserve for his final game of the season for him to be sitting on the bench
Starting point is 00:32:57 and not be playing and trying to help his team win their way into the postseason. Obviously, it wouldn't have mattered because of the outcome of the Phillies game. But it still sucks that we didn't get to see Moreno in there fighting with the guys. However, the flip side to that, the positive side is that Gabby Moreno doesn't go out there and go 0 for 4 and lose two batting points and now lose the batting title on top of the Diamondbacks, losing their playoff spot to Louisa Rise and the Phillies, losing the batting title. So it's hard on a day like this to consider anybody besides you find folks that watch this team up until the bitter end as the king snakes, because you truly are the king snakes of our season of this show of 2026 of 2025 of 2024.
Starting point is 00:33:46 But again, if there's one guy that deserves any credit for today, even though he didn't play in today's game, Gabrielle Moreno is our final king snake of 2026. he ends the year with a 311 batting average 83 rbi and 874 ops and 16 home runs king snake of the season it's him and erod yeah 100% yep 100% it's you can't even maybe nolan a few times too you know i think nolan brandon pha syroca even they in the bullpen they deserve a lot of you know flowers as well for the performances they had but if we're truly talking about the best players on this team all year long it was errod and it was was Gabby. And I don't even think there's a debate about it. Shout out to Gabby.
Starting point is 00:34:35 Shout out to you guys for being here. You guys are all the king snakes. Sarah Lang's Derek tweeted, Gabriel Moreno is the fifth catcher in MLB history to win the batting title, joining Buster Posey, Joe Mower, who did it three times, Ernie Lombardi, who did it twice, and Bubbles Hargrave, who did it in 1926. Bubbles Hargrave?
Starting point is 00:34:56 Correct. That's the exact kind of nickname we need to get for Ryan Nelson. Oh, Bubbles Hargrave. coming out for the plate. Laffy Tavvy Johnson throws him the first pitch. That's crazy. Fifth batting title ever by a catcher? That is very impressive.
Starting point is 00:35:13 In terms of the guys in recent memory, Buster Posey, Joe Mauer are the two best catchers we've seen in the last 20 years. Yeah, those are big names to be in the same company. And Gabby right there next to him. Crazy, man. What a season. I guess I'm. stuck in a very negative place in my in my head but even as i sit here celebrating gabriel
Starting point is 00:35:36 merino's achievement i can't help but think this probably cements him not being a diamond back any longer after his contract is up right i mean it's certainly possible i think that this this year did a lot in terms of not helping the diamondbacks keep him around because i would imagine derrick and i know that this was a big conversation everybody really wanted gabby to be extended last year, you know, before this year, I feel like the Diamondbacks definitely probably did broach those conversations. But Gabby and his agent being, you know, good savvy business people were like, he is a player that has yet to really play a fully healthy season.
Starting point is 00:36:19 And when he does so, he'll likely have higher value than he's ever had. And, you know, if the Diamondbacks were able to lock him up last off season, they probably would have gotten him in a very, very big deal. discount for what his market value is going to become here moving forward. So I would imagine the debacks are going to try to sit down with them and have those discussions still. They, I mean,
Starting point is 00:36:41 truthfully, like in recent years, Derek, they've brought back a lot of their players, you know, Cattel signs the extension, Lordus after the World Series year, you know,
Starting point is 00:36:52 Zach Allen, Merrill Kelly, like they, they continue to try to bring a lot of their guys back. I wouldn't be shocked if they really, really want Gabby back, but it might be a lot less realistic than what it was before this season. Because, yeah, you're right.
Starting point is 00:37:05 Like Gabby on the open market now is one of the more valuable players in the world if he was to reach free agency. And the Diamondbacks probably can't afford to get in a bidding war with, you know, the top teams in baseball. That's why they have to be savvy. They have to make smart moves before, you know, Corby and Carroll becomes a breakout superstar. They get him that extension and it saves them a lot of money. same with Perdomo before last year, right? Where they extend him right before last year. And then he's an MVP candidate.
Starting point is 00:37:35 If they did it this past off season, they'd be probably, you know, getting charged one and a half times what they paid last off season. So it's kind of all that give and take game. And they lost when it came to the Gabby situation this time around. They really did. They really did. Well, we're going to take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:37:52 And on the other side of this break, we're going to do the thing you guys have been wanting us to do this whole episode. We're going to play the blame game for why this season. went the way it did. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show. Damon, I'll tell you something that I'm going to need lots of this off season is pure edibles to help me get through these losses, especially to get a good night's sleep tonight. They help cover up my eyes weld with tears right now, but they also make my face look wonderful and protect my eyes from this sun, that even though it's an overcast day here in Phoenix, Arizona, it still will peek out at any moment and try to blind you,
Starting point is 00:39:44 and you'll be safe with Shady Rays. But more importantly, if you're like me and you are a forgetful person, you might lose your Shady Rays or sunglasses in general everywhere. And of course, Shady Rays is eyewear that has your back long after you make. your purchase with the craziest lost and broken replacement plan in all of iwear. So head on over to shady raise.com and use code pH at x50 for 50% off two or more pairs
Starting point is 00:40:14 of polarized sunglasses. Damon, I mean, I should probably be dressed differently for this next segment. I should probably have on, once again, our fedora that we referenced earlier, maybe a pipe in my hand and a magnifying glass because it's a who done it. And it is time for us to figure out who actually killed the Diamondbacks 2026 season. We're going to do that by playing, of course, the blame game. I mean, last time of this season, Derek. No, I mean, we're going to pull this up when we have to figure out who didn't get water in the office. We're going to figure this out when we're going to talk about. Yeah, you know what we need to start doing, Derek, is I need, I need Noah to give me this
Starting point is 00:41:07 so that I can change all of these things to different. Like we can make an ESPO button. We can make a- Especially with the fact that Noah doesn't understand that it's offense and not batting. Yeah. That's bothered me all season long. And fielding and not defense. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:22 Does he watch baseball? He claims to be a Tigers fan, but I don't believe that he actually is one. I think, yeah, I think that, you know, we might need to change these buttons to, you know, different people around the office potentially. Yeah. Throughout the off season.
Starting point is 00:41:35 We need a Lea button bad. Oh, God. Leah button back. Because we'll never light it up because Leah's a gem. She's precious and she's amazing. Oh, there we go. What a save. I was going to say that Leah might be the last person that I would need a button for.
Starting point is 00:41:50 I know. We definitely need an ESPO button, that's for sure. Definitely need a Derek button. A Derek button. Maybe a Derek button. There was some blame thrown Damon's way too because apparently by Chad GPT. Demon was lumped in by chat GPT with all the people who could actually be responsible for this. But Chad GBT gave Derek some ideas for the blame game here.
Starting point is 00:42:11 Just full disclosure. And in doing so was like, like, well, you guys could blame. Damon? You could blame Michael Soroka. You could blame Tori Lavolo. You could blame Mike Hazen. You could blame Cartel-Marté. You could blame Corby and Carol.
Starting point is 00:42:26 You could blame Damon. And it's like, what? Well, how did you get there? Where did you? watching the show. You've been watching the show. I take it. Okay. Well, all right. Now I'm truly terrified, but the question absolutely stands. Who killed the Diamondbacks 2026 season? Was it the offense, Damon? Yes. The answer is yes. There's no way it's not the offense. Right. I know this is a who done it, but this is more of a we're going to figure this out. But the offense 100% gets it.
Starting point is 00:43:01 This offense has been terrible all year long, inconsistent, and then great. And then terrible. In fact, during the six-game stretch at the end of the season was probably the best repeat performances in a row that we saw out of this offense. It's staggering, staggering, how inconsistent this offense has been this year. It's also staggering that Nolan Aronato led the team in home runs. It's staggering in two different ways. It's insane that Nolan Aronado had such an amazing season coming here to the valley and truly turning things around after his numbers and taken a dip the last few years. And it's insane that with the star power the Diamondbacks have in this lineup, that Nolan
Starting point is 00:43:43 Aronado led the team in home runs. I think both are fair to say. Like, I'm trying to credit Aronado for being amazing and I'm trying to shame people for not stepping up and having an equally big season as Nolan. And I think that feels fair. The bullpen, those are, those are my Latin kids. Those are my precious baby boys. Those guys did it all year long, way longer than Damon and I ever expected them to.
Starting point is 00:44:14 And they are not to blame for anything. And I don't give a damn about how these final two, how these final two games went down. So the bullpen, you're safe. But rotation? It's difficult because I think about like three of four of them could hold their heads very high. And then there's, you know, one or two bad. apples that almost spoil it for everybody else. And that's what sucks.
Starting point is 00:44:42 Yeah. But ultimately, the starting pitching between the injuries, the fact that Corbyn Burns returned and was not the cavalry that we expected him to be, the savior of the starting rotation that we were hoping for, and the performance of Merrill Kelly and Zach Allen. There's no other way to cut it. And I, you guys know, I do probably more defending of those. then I probably should on this show. But if Zach Gallen was qualified,
Starting point is 00:45:11 we would have ended up with two of the worst ERAs in all of baseball, if not the two worst ERAs by starting pitchers in our rotation. And that's not sustainable at all. That doesn't even get you to being 10 games above 500. So again, that's why you got to give some credit to Tori Lavallo and his staff for the way they managed through their struggles.
Starting point is 00:45:37 through the injuries, through the setbacks, through the disappointing returns, and still had this team on track with having multiple rookies make their debut in your starting rotation, multiple rookies make their debut in the starting lineup, and basically having to deal with all of those shortage of personnel that the front office did not provide this team during the offseason or even at the trade deadline, and still finding a way to win baseball games. That's why it's very hard to determine whether or not Tori Lavallo deserves to shoulder as much blame as people want to heap on him for this season. However, hit that manager button, Damon, because it's not without disappointing results.
Starting point is 00:46:24 And especially here in the final weekend of the season, the managing of this team was terrible. And again, if that includes Mike Hazen in the front office for their, you know, for their input and their direction as far as what the Diamondback should do, then they deserve the blame as well. And I'm sure that's the case, right? But you have the inability to win these games when they had to win them. And that goes on the manager as well. You have that late September or mid-September collapse, I guess you could say.
Starting point is 00:47:00 And the way that this, you know, these final two games worked out. And then you have the front office and the way they constructed the roster. So, I mean, we say manager, but that's more of the, I guess, everybody. It's front office. It's coaching staff. It's manager, you know. I don't know. The fielding, the defense, it was pretty damn good this year.
Starting point is 00:47:30 Yeah. You know? Truly elite. So second best in baseball all season long, basically. I'm not turning that one on. But, you know, again, when it comes to like Corbyn Burns going back on the IL and all the shortages of the pitching staff. Damon, again, we need more lights because we need bullpen and such to be different, but I have to put some blame on the pitching as well.
Starting point is 00:47:52 So that's where we would go. But I think really one of the things that we could blame the most on this is the Cattel Marte Saga. Right? It's hard not to have a button for the Cotel Marte Saga. This is something that goes beyond, I think, just what happened in Boston. Damon? I think this goes to like even the offseason because the reason why the Cattel Martage trade rumors became such like a distracting factor during the off season was due to previous incidents that have occurred like what happened in Boston. So it's hard not to place blame on Cetal Marte for being one of the sources of, you know, distraction and embarrassment and ridicule for this team when we were in the thick of a playoff race and needed to be at our absolute best.
Starting point is 00:48:58 Yeah, for sure. And beyond that, he was not very good for his standards. There's that too. There's that. You know, on top of- You come back, you hit 3.15. and you win a batting title over Gabriel Moreno and all is forgiven by this fan base
Starting point is 00:49:10 and by this guy in sunglasses right here. Correct. But when you play one of the worst seasons of your prime and you give us a huge step back from what the production has been, the previous couple of seasons, previous handful of seasons. Yeah, it's hard not to say that Kattel played a major, major factor in this team falling just two games short of their goal of making the playoffs here.
Starting point is 00:49:35 He wasn't anywhere close to as good as we know he can be. And on top of that, he was another distraction off the field yet again for apparently the fourth year in a row, which is unacceptable. I'll say this. Todd Walsh is one of the best. I respect the hell out of Todd Walsh. I love that guy. And even today, who he's like even he's such a good storyteller, yet he is far more respect respectful than we are here on this show at times we we tend to venture into the at least at
Starting point is 00:50:14 least get close to the disrespectful side at times with the way we react and the way we discuss things right but we that's that's why i try to do the derrick thing of always bringing us back down to remembering that these are human beings and at the end of the day that they're real people even though it doesn't feel like that when we watch them on you know on on uh on screen on tv 162 games during the season. But Todd, who, again, credibly respectful, does an amazing job, discussed the Cotell-Marté situation post-game and called it a betrayal using those words straight up.
Starting point is 00:50:50 And I think I was a little bit surprised by that, but I don't know if there's perhaps a better way to describe what happened. I mean, Todd works for the team, and he's clearly getting, you know, more of a inside look at what is going on with that situation, then me, you, the people of this chat, I know a lot of people want to just chalk it up to, oh, Tori's soft, he's Mr. Orange Slices, and that's why Catell does what he does. But I don't see any other player in Major League Baseball acting like how Cotel Marte does every single season, apparently.
Starting point is 00:51:24 So I think you can, you can say Tori holds a little bit of blame, but mostly the guy who's making the decisions and choosing to not show up to the ballpark holds the blame. And if we're, you know, yeah, I do think that it's not the main reason this team fell short, but it certainly, you know, held its part in the story of 2026. It's kind of like when you and I tweet about things and then people like come at us and say like, oh, that's the thing that's going to, that's what, after all these other mistakes, that's the thing that ends their season. And it's like, yeah, because because the bigger mistakes and the games that they literally squandered away
Starting point is 00:52:00 ended up being very important when you think about them missing the playoffs. by two lousy baseball games. Yeah. Right. So anyway, we're going to take a break. We're not flushing this one. This one doesn't get flushed.
Starting point is 00:52:14 We might never flush one again. We might never flush one again. But we're going to take a quick break. On the other side of this break, we are going to talk about Tori Lavallo's future with this team and his future overall in Major League Baseball. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show.

Starting point is 00:54:44 heila river resorts and casinos has to offer heal of a river resorts and casinos all the ways you do you visit play at hila dot com for more details well damon the big topic that everybody is going to be discussing for the next few weeks is whether or not tori lovalda will still be manager of the diamondbacks in twenty twenty seven and i've already heard some of very interesting takes on it. And like we said during the watch along, don't expect these two guys to be unbiased considering how much we enjoy the fresh lasagna and garlic that we eat, garlic bread that we have at his house every Sunday. But again, we've been called every name in regards to being protective of Tori, Tori Shills, Tory apologists, everything like that. But really at the
Starting point is 00:55:33 end of the day, I feel like we try to do our best to assess blame fairly. And, you know, blame Tori when we feel it's his job to be blamed and blame the players when they didn't come through. However, I would be lying if I was going to act like I didn't have some sort of personal connection to Tori, as does every member of the media that covers this team with a press pass. And it's not because we want to keep our press passes, so we want to keep Tori happy and we want to keep saying nice things about them. It's because when you're around an actual human being that you like, even though you can criticize them at times, it does impact your feelings on them.
Starting point is 00:56:07 and the feeling in general from a lot of people that do cover this team is that they would like to see Tori come back. And a lot of it is because they still feel like he did a good job this season, even given the circumstances and given the condition of this roster and this team and what he got out of them. And that's the argument to be made. But at the same time, I can also understand after 10 years, after the way the Diamondbacks have missed the postseason, these past three seasons, in such heartbreaking fashion that many fans, would be done with it, want to wash their hands of this particular manager and feel like the only way for this team to improve is for a regime change. Many people feel it goes beyond Tori and that
Starting point is 00:56:49 Mike Hazen should be replaced. While I doubt that's going to happen, I feel like it's more likely that Tori actually does return to this team. I feel Tori returning to this team on a short contract is more likely than the Diamondbacks parting ways with both Tori and Mikeazen this offseason. anything could happen and I could be wrong about that but again I also know a lot of fans will not be happy if they see Tori return one benefit I can say is is that 2027 is such a mess for major league baseball that at the very least bringing tory back on a one year deal can help us navigate through that and get through to the other side when baseball resumes and we're playing games he knows the system he knows everybody and it feels like it would be a weird year to start with a new manager
Starting point is 00:57:32 considering what we might be facing in 2027, which could be the cancellation of the entire team or entire season. Might not even have a season next year. Right. So, but I do know that as we joked, we're going to see Tori Lavallo, if he is no longer part of this team, probably become the longest tenured manager for the Los Angeles Angels you've ever seen. Or another team.
Starting point is 00:57:59 Because I do feel like Tori would be valued differently elsewhere. And I do think that if you gave Tori, just like people want a fresh start for the Diamondbacks, I think if you gave Tori a fresh start elsewhere, he would find success and, you know, be fine. Tori did say during the postgame press conference that he wants to return to this team and he wants to win a championship here for Arizona. He was also asked kind of about being appreciated and being wanted. And yeah, I can tell from a vocal portion of the fan. based on social media that that is not what they want. But, you know, again, it's more about what, you know, what, what the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:58:44 fail to do here once again, right? I do appreciate the people in the chat that are reminding everyone about what a, what a historic run that the Padres had in the month of September. So as much as we want to be angry at the Diamondbacks for not finishing the job in coming so close to a playoff spot, it was hard to contend. with that team winning every single day. And the Phillies, they tried to do their best to let us back in it. So, you know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:59:15 It's going to be interesting to see what Tori Laval's future is. It's going to be interesting to see what the Diamondbacks do. I do think that if they do move on from Tori, they do have a reasonable candidate in Jeff Bannister that could provide you with a similar type of familiarity with this team that could navigate 2027 as perhaps an interim general, or interim manager or perhaps just a manager sign on a one-year deal. However, Damon and I have discussed this before,
Starting point is 00:59:40 and if what you're looking for is something different, I'm not sure if you're going to get that from Jeff Bannister. Yeah, I don't understand the people that are like, man, let's run Tori out of town, let's get them back to Buffalo or L.A. as fast as possible, but then they want Jeff Bannister to be the guy who's given the reins of this franchise. It's like, that's Tori's buddy. That's Tori's number two man and his brain trust in that dugout. A lot of decisions are made by Jeff Bannister.
Starting point is 01:00:08 For sure. And Tori just listens. And I like Bannister and I like Tori. So I'm not like I'm I would be fine keeping the same. I know that a lot of people are not, not happy with that. I don't think the manager has a huge impact on a baseball season. Sorry. I think baseball is the sport where the coach matters the absolute least of any single one of the professional sports.
Starting point is 01:00:31 Hockey, basketball, football. Tactics are playing a role into how the game is unfolding. Playes being called, things like that. In baseball, the beauty of the sport is it's pitcher versus hitter until the ball goes out into the field. But it's a two-man show for, you know, the meantime before that. And it's very individualistic. You need a lot of moving parts to all be on the same page to win in a baseball game, including your manager.
Starting point is 01:01:00 but a lot less so than I think like a football coach, an OC who's calling plays during a game. It's like that could literally win or lose you the game. Tori making one call in an entire nine inning baseball game, maybe it blows up in his face. But one call, like that's not the reason that you won or lost that game usually. A lot of times there's other things that happened all the way throughout.
Starting point is 01:01:24 So I know that that's not the answer a lot of people want. But that's why I guess I'm comfortable with if they brought Tori back, I wouldn't be upset. If they move on, go a different direction. I understand that, too. I mean, there's, the buck has to stop somewhere eventually. No one keeps their job forever, you know? And their change could be made,
Starting point is 01:01:43 and you could make the argument that that could be a good thing for this franchise. So I'm fine with whatever decision they decide to make, Derek, but I do, like, not agree with people that are like, we didn't make playoffs because of Tory. It's like, I could point to 10 other things that were the reason more so why we didn't make playoffs in my opinion for sure well of course we thank you guys so much for being here on the final game of the season and guess what we aren't going anywhere we'll be right back tomorrow with another 12 p.m mailbag monday episode so make sure to get us all of those questions all of those angry
Starting point is 01:02:16 questions into us and we'll be sure to answer them of course until then you can follow us on social i'm at cap underscore caveman with a k damon is at damon dog with a da wg and perhaps we waited far too long to fix him. Maybe it's our fault. But if you fix him earlier, it might have been exactly the push that we needed. Yeah, we're all Damon's dogs and he works again.
Starting point is 01:02:38 But of course, our show is at PHNX underscore DBEX and all roads lead to at PHNX underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Thank you guys for your time. Love you. We'll be back trying to be a little more rational tomorrow. But we were entirely rational, man.
Starting point is 01:02:53 And that, in that like, you know, I think me and you do a good job of keeping the right idea the way things go. I'm sorry to do this at the end of the show and you're caught Derek or when you're closing it, but like it's clowns like this Oscar dude who are, you know,
Starting point is 01:03:08 they hear the way that we explain how Bannister is second. He calls for Bannister first. Then you say the thing about, well, Bannister's Tories number two. Then he tells us we know absolutely nothing about the situation. This is a random guy who's at home
Starting point is 01:03:22 who's not there at the ballpark like Derek is, damn near every single day. I know. And then goes on to say, that it's mostly because of Tory. You sir know absolutely nothing about the sport that you claim to love. And a lot of it...
Starting point is 01:03:36 Thank you for watching this season. And a lot of it has to do... Maybe next season we can teach you ball. I think some people have talked about it in the chat, but it's like, it's analytics, it's decisions by committee, it's... No, it's all Tory. And what's funny is it's not even just the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 01:03:51 that are like that. It's literally almost every single team in baseball, but maybe it's all of them. Anyway, we got some super chats to get to before we get out of here. 1999. 1999. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:04:02 Pro Ferrier. He says, I've never been a fire the manager guy, but after the last two seasons, maybe a change in leadership from Hazen to Tory would be a good thing. Find a more urgency and win today mentality.
Starting point is 01:04:15 Win now mentality. Yeah, when today mentality. I think that that's totally fair. And that kind of goes to what I was just saying right now where it's like, I can totally hear an argument of like new blood is needed in this organization to because 10 years is a long time.
Starting point is 01:04:28 for two playoff appearances. Very long time. Even if the context is they've had two years mixed in where they've been about 10 games over 500 and they haven't made playoffs. Like two playoff appearances in 10 years is not good enough. And I agree with you. Like it could be a good thing. You know, I don't know if it will be or not or if they're going to do it.
Starting point is 01:04:48 But I'm open to it. I'm open to it. Well, we also got one more from New York Gamer 18 and says, appreciate all the hard work this season, fellows living lifelong debucks fan from new york city here another disappointing ending but still love my snakes go debacks thank you sir for being here we appreciate you thank you guys love you guys appreciate you guys stopping and like i said we'll be back tomorrow if you want to do more uh therapy we'll be back
