The Arizona Diamondbacks got outclassed in every possible way tonight by the Philadelphia Phillies. We have more on this loss. And if it's over again, don't you go anywhere. We're starting right now. Debatable. Me and Damon might be right there. But welcome it to this show. It's your mayor, PHNX, occasionally known as Derek Montaia. Thrilled to have you guys here to comfort me and to talk about the Diamondbacks getting whooped by the Phillies tonight

by a score of 7 to 1. And of course, like you heard, I'm not alone. I got your dog, my dog, and definitely not Corbyn Carroll's dog. It's Damon dog on the ones and twos tonight. Damon, we have failed the test that we said was before us when it came to playing the Philadelphia Phillies. And when I say we have failed, I don't mean

we, I mean our offense. The Diamondback's offense has absolutely failed this team in these last two losses to the Philadelphia Phillies. And they are now 73 and 67 this season and they are seven and six in their last 13

games. That wonderful stretch where we kept talking about since July 9th they had the best record in the National League. That is far behind us now. And, And right now the Diamondbacks offense cannot get anything going in this series against the Phillies. And the pitching staff obviously gave up a bunch of runs today. So they're not free of blame. And yes, we are going to play the blame game.

And of course, today was just a day where everybody failed. The offense failed. Eduardo Rodriguez was not very good. And the bullpen really let this game get away. And of all those things, Eduardo Rodriguez was probably the one that still deserves some flowers for his performance today, even though he got behind the eight ball early in the first inning with a 31 pitch first inning

where he gave up two earned runs and it looked like that inning was going to never end for Erod. But he did find a way to get through it and he did find a way to get through this game with giving the Diamondbacks five innings and three earned runs allowed. So even though it was a short outing and even though it was not the usual quality start

that we're used to seeing out of the D-BACs ace, Rodriguez has just been that good this year where he finds a way to still, still be good, even when he's not very good. Even in his worst performances, he's not like losing you the game necessarily. Your offense not showing up and being lifeless yet again is what does it. Absolutely. Holds more of the blame, I guess. We should just play the blame game right now, Damon, because I'm ready to throw blame at everybody.

We got to fill an hour, Dave. I know, we do. We do have to fill out, I guess. I don't know, maybe 55 minutes. I don't know how much more of us people want. I don't know how much more they want to talk about this baseball team. Because let's be honest, we're going to get into the nitty gritty of it, Damon. But let's go ahead and loosen those ties up because we're not tightening those ties.

We might get rid of the tie because it's never been more over. It's Bobby Hurley style taken off the tie and throwing it into the crowd. It's never been more over. It has never been more over, at least when it comes to playing this particular team. Now, we did get lucky tonight that the Padres also lost. And of course, once again, it's incredibly poetic, maybe ironic, that when we lose, the Padres lose. And when we win, the Padres win. Just seems to be the case with us and this team.

It's a shitty poem. We taught, it's a terrible poem. It's not even, it's not even a haiku or anything. But what we do have now is a series loss after losing. these first two games to the Phillies. And we said this is one of the two most important series the Diamondbacks had left on their schedule. So realistically, when it comes to this team and their shortcomings and what they are this year,

like, I don't know if even making the postseason is going to be going to be a big deal for this team because if they cannot find a way to, at least muster up a better showing offensively in this series against the Phillies, then I can't imagine this team having a very good showing in the playoffs. We're going to talk about Corbin Burns coming back. And as good as that might make this team when he does return, Corbin Burns still isn't picking up a bat. Corbyn still isn't a 275 slugger that can give you 35 home runs.

You know what I mean? Yeah. That is the problem with this team right now. Offense. They definitely cannot hit at all. even in like that Cub series where they found a way to to salvage it. Yeah. It came all in late inning type of comeback.

One earned run and 20 innings pitched against the starting staff. Yeah, against the starters. Yeah. And it was all like waiting until the seventh, eighth, ninth inning to finally make your noise. And it's just, it's just not a method of winning baseball games. It's not sustainable. I mean, it's sustainable in the fact that when you do get into the postseason, right, those games are usually low scoring.

Those games are usually decided by who has the better. pitching and it does feel like the Diamondbacks once they get there could hang pitching-wise, right? But offense, this offense, I don't even know if they're going to get to the postseason with the way this offense has been performing lately. And it's been truly feast or famine, Damon. And that's the thing that's so incredibly frustrating with this offense. Scoring 10 runs, seven runs, and then 10 runs, and then scoring two runs and zero runs and one run and two runs and run and zero runs. Like, I can't even wrap my mind around how this entire team collectively goes so cold

offensively like they did tonight. I can't wrap my head around how they go from top five offenses in baseball the last two years to they're hitting being the thing that's holding them back right now. And I think that there are definitely times where you could say the pitching has held them back. But if you're talking relative to expectations of what you think the Diamondbacks lineup should be based off of having guys like. Corbyn-Carrul-Marté, Herald O'Rodomo, Gabby Moreno when he's hitting the way he's been

hitting, right? Jordan Lawler, when he's adding in what he gave you tonight. Ryan Walschman has been very good since he's been called back up. Aldemaro Vargas has had the greatest season of his career. So why when I put all these things together, Derek, is our offense as listless as it is at times? It's really quite shocking. Like it feels like on paper you have a decent enough lineup to to be above average, to put up runs. And I don't know. Maybe it's maybe it's the star player factor side of things.

And Jerry's had a down year. And, you know, Catell has obviously had his notorious issues that we've been talking about for a month now. And Corbyn has just not been himself recently. But it's just it's this is not the offense that I envision the Diamondbacks. having this season in 2026. Not at all. Well, we knew that they were short of, you know, the first baseman, DH, right? And that's not just first base.

That's also DH. That's two positions that we were like, they don't really have that. We wanted them to go pick out somebody, pick up somebody that could do both of those. And we figured with the bodies they have here, they could have somebody play first base. Tim Tawa has been fine over there. People told me that we, Gino would give absolutely nothing to this team. Well, there was Gino, there was Luis Robert Jr. There were a couple of guys that are big bats that haven't been having good years.

So it's like you think of their name and you think of what they've done historically at one point. But when you look at their numbers right now, it makes some sense why they didn't go out there. However, I will say that for a team that traded one of their top pitching prospects for Lars Neupar, I can't imagine that like going out there and giving one of those guys an opportunity or a shot wasn't beyond them, especially when Gino cleared waivers and came back to the Reds, and you got Luis Robert Jr. going to the Orioles, I believe. So, you know, that's, that's just seems like a missed opportunity for this team. And that's kind of been the theme of their season with their offense, missed opportunities with,

runners and scoring position. Runners and scoring position. Runners and scoring position. Derek, it's all, it's the every, it means probably the crux of every baseball game. So if you, you know, really break it down, it's like, how do you take, opportunities when you have guys on base and in opportunities where you can get them across. But it feels like the Diamondbacks just have had so many games this season where, you know, or series or whatever, where you're like, you know that the Diamondbacks are like 0 for 18

with runners in scoring position against the Reds in this three game slate or whatever. Like, yeah. I'm pretty sure the DeBacks still don't have a hit with runners in scoring position against the Phillies in these first two games here. You're right. You're actually right. They don't. They do not.

They were 0 for 9 last night and they were 0 for 4 tonight. And you probably like could make the case that you. And they scored two runs and two games. You could make the case that you could win both those games if you're just a little bit more clutch in those scenarios. Especially last night's game where obviously you go 0 for 9 and you lose 2 to 1. But tonight like you had an opportunity at separate times like that third inning, for example, Derek. I mean, I tweeted. I tweeted out the Nick Ahmed meme where he.

He said he just couldn't watch about the 2023 playoffs because I could not watch that third inning. Again, if you asked me to sit down and study it. Like, it's, that was painful. That was torture. Yeah. To get two runners on to start the inning. Yeah. Right.

No outs. Zero out. You got Tawa and Lawler lead off the inning. Walshman goes up to the plate. Strikes out. Strikes out. Doesn't challenge what would have been a walk because Gabby used our challenge earlier in the game. And so now we're on a.

on a, on a, nobody on base, like, wouldn't have changed the outcome of the at-bat strike call or ball call that he thought was a strike. We lose a challenge. So now Wal-Ddy doesn't want to use our, our second challenge in the third inning. Go on. And so we, now he's out. We should add bases loaded zero outs. Now he's out. Then we don't get to, then two more guys go up to the plate.

They're out. And you score nothing out of it. And what looked to be an inning that you could have clawed back a run. it was 2-0 at the time and who knows you break something open this is a different ball game instead because of poor decision-making poor offense you end up getting nothing out of it and that's just the story of the night all in all is missed opportunities and and every single time that it felt like there was one of those pivotal key moments in the game where the debacks either were going to break it open or fall and trip all over themselves and fail they'll

ladder happened and uh yeah just a painful game to watch tonight absolutely painful it was awful and uh the thing that made it awful was the fact that it was another night where the debacks couldn't get multiple hits in an inning really like you said that that third inning that's one of the only times they got multiple hits in an inning where it felt like they were putting together something you have a one two three first inning nothing productive happening katea comes up to a smattering of cheers and booze. I'm going to be honest, I heard more cheers initially. And then the booze kind of cascaded in and sounded like they were more from like Phillies fans.

Right. So that's what I was, that's what I was wondering yesterday. And I hand up like wasn't at the game. If someone was at the game and they want to maybe give us their expertise on it. But as we talked about on the show with Rock yesterday, like I feel I feel like the Phillies factor is being a little bit underplayed here in the Catelle Marte at that. Yeah. They are the biggest boobes in the world.

They're like Diamondbacks fans are booing Catel. So that's the story they're running with. As if our stadium isn't constantly 50% full with the opposing fans when they're a big team like the Phillies or the Dodgers or the Cubs or any number of teams. Like even the St. Louis

Cardinals travel really well here. The Brewers kind of travel well here because so many fans in Maryvale, right? Like there's there, this is a transplant city where spring training takes place. It's an uphill battle for the Diamondbacks to have like a staunch fan base that favors them here in this particular city. Especially when you got ASU night tonight, Derek, and I'm driving into the game listening

on the radio driving into our office here. And it's 3-1. And I'm seeing a family of four leaving the stadium in a two-run ball game when we're in a freaking playoff chase. And I'm sitting there going, how could we ever have any sort of. of home field advantage if that's the type of fans that we have that support this team. And leaving that early. Yeah, but that's a separate discussion.

I will say, I just thought it was interesting that like the Phillies fans are going to boo louder than anyone. Cattel also won an NLCS MVP against them. Like they, they already have reason to not like him. And they're just booers in general. Like, they're going to get up and make it seem like it's Diamondbacks fans booing. And fair play to them, that's epic trolling. Honestly, like as a troll myself, I, I think that's like,

Blame, getting D-Backs fans blamed, but I would like to know if it was a lot of Phillies fans that were making a lot of that noise. I really would. I mean, some people in the chat agree with the booing. Mike in the chat says, you know how you get fans in the stadium, right? You win. You win. Yeah, and the D-backs have been winning more, and I think it's been helping grow the fan base,

but it's not good enough. Not in this city. Let's be honest. But when it comes to the Cattel-Marté booing situation, I think that there are fans of of booed. I think there are a lot of fans tonight that wanted to cheer. extra hard for him to kind of support him and to try to overcome those booze that might still be coming. Yeah. I think I think we should be over it no matter how you feel. I think if you're

a fan of the Diamondbacks at this point, you shouldn't be booing your star player and trying to make him have a bad performance at this point. It doesn't help. It doesn't help anybody. It's fine. If you wanted to air your feelings, I think that's fine. Let's be honest. Let's let's address this because we haven't had a show. We haven't had a show since this happened yesterday during the pregame, we did talk to Catelle. I asked the question about Cotel. The very confusing question, may I? A very confusing question, yes. Well, let's go ahead and let's say that there was apparently a problem with the translation because I asked Catell if he had a message for the fans. Very simply, very plainly. From my understanding and going back and watching the, because I didn't notice it

in the moment, but going back and listening, it did sound like Alex, the translator, might have mispronounced the word fans in Spanish. And in Instead said, do you have a statement or do you have something about your hobbies that you'd like to say? Offician, instead of aficionados, right? Ficcion, instead of aficionados. And very, very well, Damon. And the problem here is, is that if you want to, if you want to take a step deeper, right, that it finally wasn't a mistranslation, but Cotel might have thought that when I was, if I was saying hobbies, that maybe I was referencing to him being at the casino. and gambling and kind of maybe like talking about his off-field hobbies, right?

Like his extracurricular activities that aren't baseball related. So in that case, maybe he was right if that's what he thought I was saying to not answer the question. Like he didn't answer it. But that somehow became a story. And you know me, I hate becoming part of any story. Don't lump me in with this just because I ask the question. Derek just wants to be a regular guy. I'm just a regular guy.

I listen, Derek, I would, I think that that's all fair. and I did see that interaction that you had in your replies. I read that. And so I was aware of that potential miscommunication there. That being said, we know Kattel speaks English. Like, again, like I understand he's doing the interview to make sure that there isn't this exact situation. That's, this is the reason that there is a translator there is to avoid this miscommunication. I still.

But that being said, Ketel is on the postgame show doing interviews with Mark Grace and Jody Jackson in English. He understands your question of what message do you have for the fans? That's not, I promise you he understood that question. That's why, that's where I push back against that. And I don't necessarily think that I believe him when he says that he didn't like understand the question and it confused him or whatever. I kind of agree. I think, I think he understood perfectly.

He's, I also watch back the video to make sure he's looking directly into your soul when you ask the question as well. Yeah. It's not as if he wasn't paying attention waiting for the translation. I think he perfectly understood the question. I think his response was just bad and he's looking for a way out. I have to take it at face value, right? And I can't really, I can't say one way or another. But I will say that based on his reaction in the video, it didn't look like he didn't

understand what I was saying or was confused by it. Not at all. It looked more like he just had nothing to say in regards to the subject, right? That's why I overthought this. that extra level deeper about the word hobbies and how he could have taken the word hobbies, meaning maybe that it was like a dig at him in some way about the extracurricular activities outside of baseball, right? But I will also say that when Kattel and I spoke today, he told me that it was, you know, he understood it wasn't my fault and that we were all good.

But he also told me that in perfect English. So take that for what it's worth. And I will also say, that when it comes to Cotel, I think that we need to be past this overall because we need, this is our star. This is the guy when you're asking about who we need on this team to help this offense get back on track, it's Cotel. He's had a bad season overall, but he's had stretches where he was that MVP candidate at times. And that's the guy that we need for the month of September if we are going to make the

playoffs. So again, when it came to the booze, I understand it, but I think it's time to move on. past it. And overall, I do think that there were times like when I asked that question yesterday where a simple like the communication problems still seem to be a problem. No matter what you're talking about with this whole

situation when it could tell, communication problems seem to constantly be plaguing and making everything that might not be so bad worse with that situation. But it would appear today that everybody was ready to move past it, including talking about that hat he was wearing,

which again, it's it's just it's just mind-boggling how how much this situation keeps like getting gasoline thrown on the fire so it necessarily david severe lack of self-awareness and i honestly think even with the hat like he probably just did it because it matched his shirt it's like going to the casino on a Friday night in the middle of a debacks game what did you think was going to happen did you when you wore that hat about burning bridges did you think people were not going to you know maybe read into it a little bit more than they should like Even if it's nothing, Catelle just keeps getting a tank of gas and just pouring it on the already existing fire over and over again. It's not helping anyone. But we need that guy.

We need that gas on the offense. We need the offense lit on fire. To be fair, Caesar. It's not. You know, the media is kind of, it's kind of our job to take the bait. Like that's in a way. What is he referencing when he's saying takes the bait every time? I think he's saying like, you know,

when it comes to like the hat situation. Yeah. Like are people not supposed to put that out on social media? Like why? To protect Ketel, that's not the media's job. It's not to protect and do PR for the organization that they cover. It's to inform the fans of what's happening. So, you know, that's like in a situation with like.

We tweet a lot of stuff about these situations and it never gets picked up as a national story like this, like everything with Ketel has, right? but that's not because, you know, someone like Nick King, for instance, is making up that Cotel had what he had on his hat. Nick King just tweeted out a picture of the hat and was like, this is Catell's hat. What's funny to me is no opinion on it. It's just, and you guys do what you will with that information. And Tori today even said he thought that the, uh, that the hat was like a positive thing. Like, like Catell kind of atoning for the mistakes he's made, basically saying he's burned bridges, right?

And this is a stupid. This is a quote from Luke Perry in Beverly Hills 90210.10. And I can't believe I have to talk about this goddamn quote. It means that you made mistakes in the past and you burned bridges and you learn from it. That's what it means. So in honesty, there's a bunch of people who are like, how dare could tell where or something like that. It was actually very apropos for the situation and it wasn't as negative as people were taking it, at least in my opinion. But it's also a stupid quote from 90210.

And I don't feel like getting into that any further. But I want to get as mad about the hat now that I am about the offense because its offense sucked. Suck late in the game and sucked early in the game. Only three hits before Jordan Lawler's home run, a one, two, three fourth inning, and Corbyn Carroll striking out entirely too many times. And not just Corbyn, the not so big three, right? Perdomo, Carol, and Moreno. 0 for 4, 1 strikeout for Perdomo, 0 for 3.

Over 4, 3 strikeouts for Carol. O for 4, 1 strikeout for Gabby Moreno. that's why our offense stunk tonight. The guys that we need the most are not producing, and those guys are at the top of the order getting the most at bats. And that's why this team has struggled so much lately, especially Corbyn, who just does not seem to, you know, have it right now. He needs a day off. He needs something.

You know, I think, like, Corbyn's one of those guys that it feels like once he gets into a slump, it only gets worse because he wants. wants to fix it so bad that he's just going to keep pressing and making things even more difficult on himself. So again, I'm no, I'm no baseball guru, but I will say that I know from some stories I've been told that Corbyn definitely overthinks everything. And Corbyn, once again, wants to tinker with his swing and he wants to fix it instead of just going out there and either tipping your cap that you got beat by the opposing pitcher or just kind of letting things be a little bit more natural and letting the game come to you.

One of the reasons why Moreno has been so good this year is because of that exact thing. Not hitting for power, not putting the ball over the wall a whole lot, not doing much other than taking what's given to him and getting on base. And that's why he's had success. But again, today, 0412 from those three guys. And that's not, once again, not sustainable. But with two outs in the fifth inning, Jordan Lawler did give the snakes their only run of this game. And with a solo home run, it was his fourth of the year, was 101.8 miles per hour off the bat and 385 feet to left center field.

It seemed like it was a little bit of a turning point because the deback started getting some hits after that, not just in the fifth inning, but in the sixth inning. And it seemed to feel like things were going to break through maybe in the seventh when they got a lead off single from Ildomarovar Vargas and a two out walk from Walschmidt was their only other time of having their two base runners on. And then Pridomo would strike out looking. So it was just, you know, that kind of night. Also, the defense wasn't solid tonight. Jordan Lawler made a jumping attempt on a ball hit by Trey Turner. Damon. I don't know if you saw that on TV.

Yeah. I was busy looking through binoculars while it was going on and trying to get a good look at it. Did that look like something Jordan Lawler could have caught? Because I feel like based on what I saw, it looked like he might have been able to catch it if he, like, timed his jump a little bit better. It just seemed like his timing on that or his route to it wasn't. great. I didn't think really anything of it, to be honest with you. I thought, you know, Jordan Lawler made a couple diving attempts tonight that he didn't come up with balls in one that

he did if I'm not mistaken. In the seventh inning, he made a great freaking sliding grab there on Brandon Marsh to end that inning. Yeah, I mean, maybe he could have done a slightly better job with that that baseball there tracking it. But all in all, like Jordan Lawler was the solution tonight. You know, and I'm not saying that you're not saying that. But he was definitely not the problem. No, for sure. He was the one guy in the lineup that actually got off the bus and played baseball today. Derek, I have our Corvin Carroll splits for us here. Oh, and all on.

Let's just, let's give, let's give Jordan his flowers real fast. And then we'll get sad once again about Corby Carroll's numbers. But Jordan Lawler, obviously, our King Snake tonight. No doubt about that. Because if he didn't get it, then I'm giving it to Damon. That's it. That's what I'm giving it to. But Jordan Lawler, two for three tonight.

One home run, one RBI, one run scored. And again, the only only one, the only one, run scored in this game. So the only person that even deserves to be considered for it. I agree with Nate in the chat. He looked really good tonight. And I don't mind that he didn't make plays when he's at least attempting them, if that makes sense. Like, it wasn't a problem that he didn't catch that ball. I was just curious if it was close or if he just kind of misplayed it. But like the way that Jordan Lawler kind of flies around out there, I mean, he makes some things look just incredibly easy, like that sliding grab by for to get brandon marsh that was a ball that i feel like probably

would have dropped for like a single if certain outfielders were out there playing center field but he's very very natural for not being an outfielder you know in his heart of hearts so i think it's really encouraging for his long-term development at that position and what that looks like long-term but man has has he been pretty good this season derrick when he's played i know it's only 24 games or 25 games now, but before tonight's game, going into tonight, 288, 358 OBP, 479 slug for an 837 OPS. And as you said, continues to make flash plays out there in the outfield as well. Maybe it's not all there all the time. But I think you have to absolutely love what you've seen in the short sample size from Jordan Lawler this season. He's been nothing

short of everything that you would want him to be. The only issue has been staying on the field, and that's going to be the next hurdle for him. Right. Is can we keep you out there consistently, but he's been, he's been absolutely fantastic this season when he's been out there. Right. And Cesar, Cesar, I'm going with Cesar. It's always Cesar. I love Loller. Hope he can stay healthy. That's all that's missing. You're absolutely right. Staying on the field, right? That experience, especially considering he has not played a lot of outfield. You feel like he's going to get better and maybe not make some of those mistakes, maybe play some of those balls or judge things a little bit better, just to make a little bit better of a play, right? Instead of leaping for that ball, maybe just letting it go to the wall and

playing it off the bounce or something of the sort. But again, like you said, Jordan Lawler was the solution and not the problem tonight. Corby and Carroll, meanwhile, has been a problem for a little bit now offensively. He's really been struggling. Depress us with the numbers here, Damon, if you, if you wouldn't mind. Yeah, Corbyn Carroll has not been playing good baseball recently. If you, if you look at his last 30 days stats they're not terrible he is a 782 OPS in that time period it's only a 225 average but could be a lot worse didn't he win a player of the week over that stretch or sometime in the last 30 days yeah he had a really good weekend there to prove that yes he did uh and in his last two weeks Derek he's hitting 204 317 OBP 347 slug for a 664 OPS and then over his last week no

And that's before you went over for tonight. 115, 200 on base percentage, 231 slug, 431 OPS. It's really, really, really bad. It's really, really, really bad. And when we talk about this all the time, it's not like this is new. But when Corbyn Carroll is not hitting, it looks really rough. It does. Like the cool off period of Corbyn's seasons hurt bad.

It's not just a cool off. It's like you're on, you just got put out on Planet Hoff and you're looking for Luke Skywalker. It's, you know what it is too? It's as cold as cold gets. It's his demeanor,

right? Because there's something that like Corbyn Carroll, when he's smiling and he's happy and he's joyful, is one of the most infectious things to be around on the planet. Like I would say that about other guys, but they're happy a lot, right? Like Perdomo is in a good move. a lot. Gabby Moreno in a good mood a lot. Like those guys, you'll be hard pressed. Ildomar

Vargas and his brand new haircut is amazing. Paolo, it looks great. Right. He's, oh, that guy, you'll never, he's never had a bad day in his life, Iltemar Vargas, I don't think, right? But Corbyn can, you know, can be impacted, his mood overall, the way he carries himself can be impacted by, you know, his struggles, right? And like, again, that's another thing that feels like the vibes have never been lower right now is because Corbin's struggling and Corbin is not playing the game with joy. He's not smiling and we're not getting to see him have all the fun out there that we normally have. And I think that yeah, you're right. It's like the swings are bad, the decisions are bad, like everything. He looks so lost at the plate, but then he looks so

miserable out there too. And all of that sucks because we want, we want Corby and Carroll living his best life at all times. And we also want Corbyn Carroll definitely helping this team win baseball games. But, you know, it's, it's not really happening right now. I think a day off is needed. And I think Tori might feel the same way considering he was asked that after the game tonight. So, but we're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break. I'm not, you know what, Derek, I'm not taking this from cool, bro. Dback's got paid off by U of A tonight. When we lost on U of A night, he blamed. it solely on U of A.

But when we lose on ASU night, it's all U of A's fault as well. I don't understand how the math's mathing here, Derek. It doesn't make any sense to me. Would you guys just fight each other? I got people in ASU. I'm looking at people in ASU gear leaving the stadium in the sixth inning.

That line to get the Merrill Kelly jersey was the longest goddamn line I've ever seen. Oh, they had their jerseys, Derek. Clearly they got what they came there for. I have never seen a line for stuff that you paid for. that long in my entire life at Chase Field. I've seen it for stuff like bobbleheads and globes and stuff, you know,

I've seen it for that outside when it's free. But I don't know if people that bought this ticket package quite understood, they have one for you no matter what. This is what happens when our offense only scores two runs and goes, what was it? O for 13 with runners in scoring position in the last two games. That's not even enough opportunities in two games. What a loss this was. This truly was a loss where every aspect of this team lost. Defensively, they weren't very sharp tonight. The offense absolutely sucked. And pitching was not very good.

Eduardo Rodriguez did not have a great start. And it felt like he really couldn't get settled in after the Phillies just had a good game plan. in the first inning. Honestly, they were very aggressive. They attacked him. They, you know, he had a patient at bat from Kyle Schwerber. He walked Kyle Schwerber as the leadoff batter. And then he gave up an RBI double to Trey Turner on that ball. I was talking about that Lawler had a chance at catching, but kind of mistimed. That put the Phillies up one to nothing right away. Then you had Bryce Harper bunting for a single and that moved Turner to third. Then a rise hit a double play. that was a very nice defensive play turned behind Erod, and that definitely felt like it got things settled down a little bit.

Things were getting out of control, but the double play did clear the bases because Turner came home, and that made the score two to nothing. And even though it felt like the Phillies were going to get five runs in the inning, Erod still limited the damage to just those two runs. However, the damage was done because he had a 31 pitch first inning, and it felt like that just doomed him for this outing. I'm actually surprised that he was able to give the Diamondbacks five innings after a 31 pitch, first inning. He gave up a two-out single to Derek Hill in the second inning, but he got stock and Real Muto to strike out. Then he gave out a pair of one-out singles in the third to Harper and Ires. But then he got a two-out single to Edmundo Sosa to load the bases. No runs would score. He would escape that bases loaded jam. He had a one, two, three, fourth inning. And then with one out in the fifth,

he walked Harper, gave up a single to a rise, and then gave up an RBI single to Alec Bohm to make it three to nothing. He would get out of that inning as well, but that would be the end of his day. And overall, again, it was the four seam and the changeup that was doing it for Erod today. But he did mix up in his crudder a little more. He mixed in his sinker a little more, just a little more than we're used to. Usually you see a pretty even outing here from the four seam fastball and the change up. Today he went four seam heavy with that being 36. of the pitches he threw. His four seam maxed out at 94.6 miles an hour and his average below was up a tick from 92 to 92.6 miles an hour. He got two whiffs with the four seam, two whiffs with the changeup and three whiffs with his cutter today. But you know, you can you can kind of see the vision here a little bit as far as where his changeup was landing where he wanted his fastball and his cutter. But his four seam was all over the place. And he really didn't have. good command of it tonight. I feel like that's why he ended up using the cutter as much as he did.

I think his two seam cutter just had a little bit more of a control for him overall. But yeah, overall, just a night where Erod had to work where his stuff was not, you know, his stuff was not perfect. And he did not have that same command and control that he's had in his last two outings. But like I said, he still ends up going five innings and still ends up only giving three, giving up three runs. Erod, not the reason that the Diamondbacks lost tonight. Fair to say, Damon.

Yeah, Erod was good enough to win a baseball game tonight, even if he didn't have his stuff that he's had most of this season. And even, you know, he gave up three runs, right? Like, there's been a lot of better outings, but he worked his way out of a lot of jams tonight as well, which is really a lot of what he's been doing all season. Like some of his best outings have been allowing him. allowing base runners, but he finds a way to limit the damage.

And he still limited the damage tonight. So I don't think it's like Erod's run is over or anything. I think, you know, he's, he just pitched his last, his best game of the season, arguably last game out. But yeah, not, not his best stuff, but good enough to win with if your offense shows anything. Right. It's kind of like the series against the Cubs. The Cubs have been smothering people. The Cubs have been scoring a lot of runs.

So the fact that the Diamondbacks were able to hold the Cubs to as few of runs as they did, you could say the same thing about this game up to this point. But then the bullpen really didn't do anything to help them keep this game close. You had Clark gave them a hell of an inning. Taylor Clark looked amazing. I think he was just pumped by the fantasy football draft order selection that he helped put together earlier in the day, which we'll briefly talk about. But he gave them one inning and two dominant strikeouts.

J-Mart gave up a hit and a walk in his inning of work, but he didn't give up any runs and he got one strikeout. And then Herardo Carrillo. His outing today might be bad enough that we might see a move made where he's optioned back down because he did not record an out today. He gave up two hits, three earned runs and a walk. And those three earned runs really did let this game get away. If the offense at any point was trying to muster something up,

which around that time they were, this was the seventh inning, right? They were starting to put some hits together. They were starting to put some things together. And then it just completely unraveled and you look up and it's a six to one ball game. Derek Law, who spells his name incredibly well and accurate, he gave one inning of work, gave up one hit. He still continues to look good as an answer for, you know, Ritees from out of the pen. And then Blake Walston, who we were going to possibly speculate on maybe doing a piggyback start tomorrow.

with Jose Cabrera in some capacity, he came in and gave one inning of work, gave up one hit and one run. So there's a good chance he probably will not be involved in tomorrow's game, even though he was just added to the expanded roster, along with Lordus Gariel Jr., who was also added to the expanded roster. But Diamondbacks still don't have, I believe, a starter named for tomorrow, even though Tori did say Jose Cabrera was going to start for this team.

Jose Cabrera is, you know, in the clubhouse. with a with a locker. He also had mentioned that one of the reasons why they decided not to have Corbin Burns pitch in game one of the series with the Houston Astros was due to the fact that if they had Jose Cabrera's start in game three of this series,

there's a good chance that he might not give them very much length. And then he would need to turn it over the very next game to Corbyn Burns, who they know for effect, wouldn't give them very much length. So the plan now with Corbyn Burns is for Corbyn Burns to pitch in a bridge camp game instead of another AAA rehab assignment

to stretch him out further. And then his next turn through the rotation, Corbyn Burns will be back in the Diamondback starting rotation. And he will be back stretched out enough to give the Diamondback somewhere from four to six innings, perhaps, which is a full start, right? Yeah, six would be a lot. Six would be a lot. I find that hard to believe.

Well, it depends on pitch count, right? They're not as concerned with Corbyn on updowns. So if he can limit his pitch count, then there's no reason why he wouldn't be able to give them a full start, right? But assuming that his pitch count looks like a normal pitch count and he's not throwing like an immaculate inning. Correct. In two of his innings. Yeah, yeah, yeah, right. He's got to get.

I think he probably gives us about four. I think he probably gives us about four innings. Yeah, he's got to get to get to about 60, which is what they're hoping that the bridge camp start will do without him being like impacted by actual like. competition, right? Going to AAA Reno and playing in an actual minor league game, you just never know how that's going to do, whereas a bridge camp game, they can control a little more.

Overall here, though, it's all good things as far as the pitching is concerned. It feels like, you know, the Diamondbacks are getting some pieces back, and it feels like once we get past the Jose Cabrera start in tomorrow's game, that that might be the last minor league start that we need. The other pitching arm that's returning soon

is Zach Gallen, and it sounds like Corbyn and Zach Gallen are about on the same timetable. We also had Ryan Nelson in the clubhouse today, and we got to speak to Ryan Nelson. Ryan Nelson is very excited to come back, and he said he's willing to come back in any capacity that the team needs him. He also wants to come back and help this team win this year.

So even though there's not a lot of games to do that in, you know, there hopefully is still time for that. And the hope is that this season obviously extends beyond the 29th of September and we're talking about this team being in the mother effing yoffs but we got to get there first and if this offense can't find a way to pick things up

then I can't imagine them making the playoffs at this point yeah I mean you need Corbin Burns back hopefully Soroka maybe could come back at some point in time yeah Syroca is supposed to be back at the end of his 15 day I else did so

could season could be over by then, but maybe not. Who knows? Hopefully he can give you something. No, I mean, I'm not saying it's literally over. I'm saying it's. Well, yeah, yes. Yeah, I get what you're saying.

Like the PHNXD backs form of over. That's the problem. That's the problem. Tori made that comment today. Tori said he still doesn't believe that this team has basically summarizing the way that translators tend to do. He doesn't believe that this team has reached its final form yet, right? And he didn't mean that based on the fact that, oh,

things are still going to come together for us. No, he means that like there's a bunch of injured players that are now coming back to this team all in one big window where, you know, you even have Nelly making the joke about how good the pitching staff is over for the Salt River team right now. It's Gallin, Corbyn Burns and him. That is funny. Just some studs. I also think that that's been the case all season long. All season long we've been saying, this crop is just right around the corner. They're about to be back guys. We promise. And then we. This is different. I mean, this is literally. they're about to be back.

Just like people in the chat are saying Corbin Burns isn't going to be back. Like next week. Corbyn Burns was supposed to be back in July. He's supposed to be back in July. Yeah. You could say it's different. But then at every turn, it's just we keep kicking the can down the road with all of these guys. Corbin Burns was never in rehab starts at AAA Reno getting set to return to the starting rotation when he had that setback.

Right. So it's like the the set, the dates are set because yes, that's the timetable for them to return. Right. but the biggest problem with injuries is setbacks. The biggest problem with injuries is sometimes once you start throwing, you are now compensating for that injury by doing something else or something weird with your mechanics and your body, and now you injure something else, right?

I don't, I guess I don't really understand your point, though, because all I'm saying is that we keep being told that the injury, the injured guys are right around the corner and they're about to be back on the team. And then we get one guy back and then the other guys all get hurt again or they're not ready yet. Like that's been happening consistently this entire season pretty much. What I'm saying is, is that they were never actually close to coming back, is my point. They were never actually this close to coming back. So the doubt that these guys are going to return is ridiculous because they are pitching in actual competitive AAA minor league games.

Like Lordis Gereal Jr., for instance, you and I were just looking at his numbers at a AAA level. we were we were questioning how this is how this man is going to help the diamondbacks here at a major league level with these numbers still questioning it but that didn't change the fact that he got added to the roster today disastrous decision right i'm not saying that it i'm not there i'm just saying like it as unlikely as it seemed it still happened so as well as as it seems that these guys are never going to come back they actually are and they are going to come back. But the problem with it is that this final-

Loller tomorrow, by the way, if you were curious. I'll tell you that. No, I'm just saying. Oh, I was like, is he really? No freaking way. That's the joke. That's the joke that's making. Because it's been so bad this season and Loller, every time he hits a home run is on the bench the next day. He's got to rest. He's got a rest. But really when it comes down to it, right, the idea that this team hasn't reached its

final form yet. Yes, that's true. But it might be too little too late. or might be too late too late. Like the fact that you have players that need to come back and acclimate to Major League timing before they can be there at a true 100% is going to be a factor. And there's not a lot of games for Corbyn Burns to pitch

before he can get, you know, all that timing back and be his normal Cy Young caliber self, right? So great, he comes back. But at this point with him coming back in the second week in September, it might truly be too little too late. And like I said earlier, he's not picking up a bat.

Neither is that gallon, neither is Ryan Nelson. None of those guys are going to help this offense. And this offense right now is the thing that needs assistance, needs something, right? Tommy Troy did hit a home run tonight, and he's going to be back soon. So maybe Tommy Troy's right.

I was just going to say that, you know, we were talking about these pitching matchups and Brandon fought and E. Rod, like, and avoiding his out. Wheeler and Christopher Stich's. Oh, we're so happy about that. And we've now gotten our two best pitchers out of the way here. We're down 02 in the series. And we've scored two runs.

We have an opener going tomorrow. Our offense has been pathetic and you're playing in one of the biggest series of the season. It's been about as much of a disaster as you could have drawn up through these first two games. Yeah, throw in another thing just to make it even worse. If they get swept tomorrow, they lose the season series to the Phillies. Yeah, the tiebreaker is gone. So you're still playing for something pretty big tomorrow. Going three and three against the Phillies on the season would, I'm not going to say like make me feel better, but it would salvage this series a little bit to the point of, well, it wasn't a complete calamity. If you lose again tomorrow, thank you fans. Thank you fans.

But since we don't have two pitching signs, I'm sorry, Erod, you're getting partial blame because we're also definitely blaming the bullpen for giving up, what was it? Four run runs after Erod left? Disgusting. Disgusting. I mean, isn't it kind of funny that the D-Backs bullpen has gotten to the point where them giving up four runs is like, oh, that's the worst that performance. they've ever had gross, right? Like, that is kind of, kind of the truth now, because they've been excellent. And, you know, they continue to find guys, and then they continue to have guys kind of let them down, right? Like, Herardo Carrillo was untouchable, and now he's come back down to earth. You could say the same thing about Kevin Ginkle at one point during the season, even though Gink has been putting some better performances together as of late. And of course, you know, now you have Derek Claw, who's kind of come in with a great name that he spells

correctly and he's kind of a shoved a little bit at least against righties so they they find they seem to find some replacements uh and they'll need to because they have lost ryan thompson for the year that was part of the roster moves that were made today ryan thompson goes on the 60 day iL and we'll miss the remainder of the season that's not really much of a surprise i feel like that was something that was kind of writing was on the wall there but anyway damon let's light up that pitching light um and then of course there if if i had if i had more lights for the offense, I would turn those on. If I could, I would make it the brightest light that has ever shown in the known universe

because it's absolutely the offense's fault that they lost tonight's game. So let's click that light on. Defense, you're getting some too. You were good, but not great. And the Diamondbacks, unfortunately, need great defense in almost every single game for them to stay in these games. Yeah, I mean, it's the calling card of the team. We talk about it all the time.

They're not very good at hitting. They're very average. They're not very good at pitching. They're very average, slightly below in both categories. and their defense is really the one elite thing that the team boasts all season. So they got to get elite defense or else they're going to lose a lot of baseball games. Last but not least is the manager. Light.

And I'm having a little bit of a struggle with this one, Damon. So I want to hear your thoughts on this overall. But I mean, when everything else goes wrong, how do I not blame the coaching staff and Tori LaValle? Yeah. I mean, I think that the manager deserves some blame tonight. I'll also say that Tori Lavello came out of a team meeting today, rushed out to the field so that he could be a part of the Diamondbacks fantasy football draft selection, that draft order selection process that they were doing. Tori proceeded to do a dizzy bat for those of you that might have never had the pleasure of this terrible, terrible thing being a part of your life. It's where you put your forehead on a baseball bat and you go around in circles five times in a row to get yourself.

If they're in the fantasy league, there's going to be all sorts of cheating and stuff going on. Then the other hat was what kind of silly stupid bat you had to use in order to hit the ball. There were wiffle bats.

There were angle bats. There were flat bats. Obviously, the aforementioned dizzy bat. And based on what you choose, it was like members of the coaching staff were the hitters. And then the bat types were out of the other hat. And again, I will say that beforehand, I kind of like this. I felt like the vibes were high. I felt like things were good at Chase Field.

It was the exact kind of thing that they needed. And I think that's the reason why they went with it overall. But they always try to do something fun. It is kind of suspicious. It is suspicious that James McCann organized this whole draft selection process and then somehow ended up with the number one overall pick. I'm just saying it's a little suspicious, but at the same time, it is what it is.

with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, the Phillies couldn't stop getting hits with runners in scoring position. They went six for 14. They singled the Diamondbacks to death tonight. As you can see, the Diamondbacks even had a higher hard-hit percentage. The 36% of the contact made was hard-hit.

Meanwhile, 26.5% of the contact made by the Phillies was hard-hit. Expected batting average, nearly a push. 246 for the D-backs, 266 for the Phillies. and then my baseball team remains terrible at using ABS challenges 0 for 2 tonight, 1 for 1 for the Phillies.

And I, you know, I think the most frustrating thing about the Diamondbacks is there will be times throughout a game where they do not use their challenges, but they know they should have. And then they'll just randomly use it on some bullshit call of a few like pitches later. And you're just like, don't just use it just to use it. What are you doing? It's like, it's like, ah, yeah. You're not using it at the time when you're supposed to, but then you're going to use it.

Derek, there are times on this podcast where I really struggle with how to make this bar chart for the ABS challenges, right? Because there will be times where there's a game where one team is three for four and the other team is one for one. And I have to put the team that went one for one is having a higher percentage. But I think the team that went three for four obviously had the better game challenging versus the team that went one for. one for one. This one was an easy one tonight. Like, they look lost sometimes with the challenges and they look lost sometimes at the plate when it comes to their offense. And this is a team that has still been middle of the pack when it comes to OPS and runs produced and everything else.

They just still can't figure out who they are or how to do. it consistently on a night-in-night-out basis, right? Phillies, meanwhile, they've been playing some really good baseball, right? They're on a tear right now, and it sucks that we lost this series to them, and it sucks that we might get swept by them. But luckily, the Padres lost tonight. And as long as we can somehow at least turn this into any kind of reasonable race with the Padres for the final spot, we still have that final series at the end of the year.
