Starting point is 00:00:00 Well, we have a lot of losses to talk about when it comes to injuries, but we are talking about a very important win as the Diamondbacks fought back and won this game tonight against the twins. But at what cost? I don't know. Do we turn it on the cactus light? It's still a win. I feel like you got it.
Starting point is 00:00:17 It's still a win even though we lost. We are going live now to talk about all of this. To another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast. Presented by our friends in Circle K. I don't know if that was an angry. live or a happy live. Not quite sure. That's kind of how today went
Starting point is 00:00:50 for the Arizona Diamondbacks. My name is Derek Monti occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX and I'm thrilled to be joined by my buddy, the one, the only, the incomparable cogs here to talk a little Diamondbacks baseball. Plus we got our sweet, tweet baby Noah
Starting point is 00:01:05 on the ones and twos tonight talking about the Diamondbacks beating the Minnesota twins by a score of nine to five. That's the good thing. We'll talk about the bad later because there might be a lot of it. But, of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Go download the Bet365 app right now. Bet365, where winning is everything. Download the app and use code PhNX 365 to get yourself some bonus bets. We're also presented to you by GameTime. Go download the GameTime app. Create an account and use code PHNX for $20 off your first purchase. Terms to apply. And as Damon said, if you want to go to a baseball game for $1, we can make that happen.
Starting point is 00:01:41 We can make that happen. Maybe tonight wasn't the game to go to, even though the Diamondbacks did win by a score of 9 to 5 because cogs, it just felt like the hits kept on coming. And I don't mean the actual hits for the Diamondbacks. I mean the bad news. Just one piece of bad news after the other, after the other. It started before the game with Ryan Nelson and an unfortunate update on AJ Puck, both of those things, which we'll get to later in the show.
Starting point is 00:02:07 But then in this game, even though the Diamondbacks did win by a score of 9 to 5, they had both Michael Soroka and Jordan Lawler leave the game with apparent injure. And as optimistic as I was before talking to these guys, things kind of swapped. I was a little more worried about Soroka and a little less worried about Lawler after he like kind of ran off the field. But hearing what Lawler said and kind of seeing the disappointment in his face, I'm a bit more concerned about him as Soroka kind of expressed that he doesn't feel like this injury that made him leave the game tonight after just one inning is anything serious.
Starting point is 00:02:44 However, Cogs, how can this not be absolutely devastating, considering that the Diamondbacks lose not one but two starting pitchers, at least for the time being, in one single Godforsaken day? I woke up at a very inopportune time today. I'm not going to disclose the time. It was later than you all would believe. Check my phone. The first thing I saw was Ryan Nelson was going to put on the address. No, now I want to know what time you got up. I'm not moving on from this.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Did you, 4 p.m. Coggs? four. Look, look, look. I have a bad sleep schedule. Okay, and it impacts my my day to day. Oh my God, God. It hurts even more when I wake up and I go, I'm excited to watch baseball and I'm going to the game. What's that? My favorite starters hurt. No.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Losing him is obviously a massive book. They said four to 12 weeks. Huge, yeah. It's just a real wide range. And they'll get imaging again after four weeks, but still doesn't seem great. And it just adds to the Corbin-Burn setback and the AJ Puck setbacks that we already knew about. But after winning this one, again, the Diamondbacks lose two of their starting five in one day with Michael Soroka exiting the game after just one inning pitch today. That bullpen was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Kevin Ginkle was quite bad, in fact. However, they still hung on.
Starting point is 00:04:09 on an unexpected bullpen start situation, essentially, to win this one. And the Diamondbacks do improve to 39 and 36. Noah, I'm going to need you to take a moment, and I'm going to need you to send little Geraldo Perdomo up the mountain. That might take you a second because it's a video that we have there. This is more of a Damon thing, but it's a little video of a little guy heading up the mountain. If we have it, I think now is the time to play it. I thought that was going to make me feel better.
Starting point is 00:04:51 It did not make me feel better. Not as good as I was hoping. No, not at all, not at all. Michael Soroka gave up two singles tonight in the first inning and was aided on the first. Byron Buxton, who else hit one too? Was it Corbin? Basically, two players hit the ball in the exact same trajectory.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Maybe it was Jordan Lawler. No, wait, I'm getting that mixed up. But regardless, this Buxton hit looked like it was going to be home run right away in the first inning. Somehow it stayed in the yard, bounced off the wall. Buxton tries to stretch it into a double, and Lordus Gurriel Jr. made a amazing throw to get Buxton trying to get into second base there.
Starting point is 00:05:31 But that was the end for Soroka. Before the second inning would begin, Soroka would go out to the mound to warm up. He would throw his first pitch, and then he would immediately call over to the training staff and the dugout after making that warm up throw. and he I mean the part that really scared me
Starting point is 00:05:49 is he looked like everybody kind of cleared the way for him to go like throw one more pitch to just try to see how it felt and he didn't even throw it. He just got back up on the mound and like literally starting to go into his pitching motion was enough for him to feel this injury again which was originally called a posterior left hip discomfort
Starting point is 00:06:10 but it was changed to posterior left glute discomfort we're going to try to be mature and not say he's butt hurt we're going to try to not say he's butt hurt
Starting point is 00:06:24 Hey you said it not me I feel like see I said I was going to try to say it but I'm not I mean again I will say at least not try to make fun of this you know light of this situation but Soroka for the most part seemed very
Starting point is 00:06:38 I guess positive that you know this was going to be not a temporary setback and not something that's going to cause him to miss a significant amount of time. However, it's hard to not instantly worry about what the hell this team is going to do to put out five starting pitchers on the mound. I was very nervous after he came out of the game, but I am very glad to see that it's not in upper body injury. I would much rather have it be that lower body. Yeah, for not another arm injury, especially for Stroke, a guy who hasn't thrown a lot of innings in quite so many years, right?
Starting point is 00:07:12 I think his high last year was right around 100. He was a guy coming off of another major injury. So losing him to a mother minor injury, you know, it's a silver lining in this situation. Yeah, it's kind of, it is a little bit like Ryan Nelson's injury where it could be worse. It could be much worse considering what the injury is. And in this case, it could be much worse for this starting rotation
Starting point is 00:07:34 that Soroka missed his significant time. However, it's hard not to think of this being an absolute disaster coming on the same day as Ryan Nelson being put on the 15-day IL. And it just sucks, man. It sucks for this team that has tried to overcome just one injury setback after the next. I will say that our guy Jack Summers over at Snake's territory did a great job of putting this in a perspective for D-BACs fans, though, the other day, because he went around just pulling tweets from other franchises and other teams where their fans were basically claiming that their manager, to be fired and that their medical staff was the worst medical staff in all MLB and how the hell
Starting point is 00:08:15 they let all these injuries happen. It's more of an epidemic around baseball than it really is for the Diamondbacks. That's hard to keep into perspective on a day like this, though, because not only did the Diamondbacks lose possibly Soroka, but then late in the game, Jordan Lawler came up. It looked like he stepped on the bag kind of awkward where he beat out a button single, but it would appear that he injured his hamstring running up the line. We were a bit and more. encouraged about that injury because after he was removed from the game, he kind of ran, not at full speed, but he ran, like, off the field. It didn't look like he was tender. It didn't look like he necessarily needed, you know, to be helped off the field. So it didn't look like
Starting point is 00:08:56 that injury was that significant. However, we will have Jordan here telling you himself a little bit later about that injury. I got to give it up, though, to the bullpen. Because when you talk about today, the offense really stepped up and put up nine runs for this team. Corbyn Carroll obviously set a or tied a franchise record with 52 career triples. And all of that is incredible. Like there's no taking away from what this offense did. But considering that this bullpen was asked to go out there and suddenly give the Diamondbacks eight innings tonight, they did a great job of holding Minnesota to five
Starting point is 00:09:32 runs. And again, nobody was perfect other than Johnny Lazzania because he was hot and fresh and ready. but Taylor Clark he came in, he gave up a solo home run to Victor Carrantini. That made it 1-0 nothing in the second inning. Thompson, Ryan Thompson came in. In the third, he gave up a lead-off single to Luke
Starting point is 00:09:51 Kishaw, who would score on an Olin Aronado error, make it 2-0. That run was unearned for Thompson. And then, Dre Jameson, with one out, came in in the fourth, walked Brooks Lee and Caratini, and then Tristan Gray, got an RBI single. That gave the twins a 3-to-1 lead. but again, it was kind of a bend and not break night for the bullpen overall, right?
Starting point is 00:10:15 Maybe Kevin Ginkle broke a little bit, but in between those in the middle there, Jonathan Loisigga, aka Johnny LaZagna, he delivered the D-Back's first one, two, three inning of the night. He went one in the third inning pitched. Brandon Garcia gave them an inning with one walk and two strikeouts. He still remains very good as the team's sole left-hander right now. but Kevin Ginkle, not very good tonight. He gave up absolute monster back-to-back home runs to the first two badgers he faced.
Starting point is 00:10:45 That was Josh Bell and Royce Lewis, who is currently hitting below 200. And then with one out, he walked Carrotini. He did get out of the inning, but again, he made it very close at the time. The game was six to five after the top of the eighth and him giving up those two runs. Luckily, the Diamondbacks were able to tack on
Starting point is 00:11:04 three more in the bottom of the inning and just kind of seal the deal. Meanwhile, Paul Seawald, what can we say about Paul E. Seawald? Automatic. That's crazy. That's crazy that that word was the first word you associated with Paul Seawald.
Starting point is 00:11:20 It's a crazy thing about it. And yet it's accurate. It's right. You're right. He has been pretty much automatic. You throw him in a save situation or a situation where they are up. He's had one especially bad outing all season,
Starting point is 00:11:35 Which is something for a guy who last year barely played because he was injured. And when he did play, he split time, I believe, between the Tigers and the Guardians. And he struggled very mightily. And he wasn't in high leverage situations any longer. And we know he's kind of not been great when he's not in high leverage situations. Somehow this man thrives in these kind of moments, right? But it's also just because I truly feel like he understands how to kind of like use the, aggression of the opposing batters in the ninth inning against themselves. He doesn't throw hard.
Starting point is 00:12:12 You know he's going to throw you a 91, 92 mile per hour fastball. And you know what two pitches he's going to throw you, right? And that's it. That's, that's, that's the entire book on Paul Seawall. But it's the fact that his command has been so good this year that he could throw the ball exactly where he wants it. He's been inducing soft contact. I mean, he's also been inducing hard contact, right? Like, it's not like his contact rate is great, but he's still like, he just gets outs and he goes out there, gets the strikeouts for the kids, gets the outs for the adults and does a good job every night. It's just amazing how good Paul Seewald has been for this team. And again, besides Jonathan Loisigua, he was the only Diamondback that went out there and just
Starting point is 00:12:53 simply took care of business. He did give up one walk, but he got one strikeout for the kids and one ending of work. More importantly, it wasn't a save situation, and he still got the job done, right? So that felt pretty good as well. The downside here being cogs that we are starting a very, very long stretch without any days off. And the Diamondbacks went out there tonight and pretty much used, emptied the clip as far as their bullpen was concerned. I think the only guy, that they, the only two that they didn't use, they didn't use Murillo and they didn't use Yilbert Diaz who joined the team today. Correct. Correct. And Yilbert Diaz, most of the time. likely will be asked to do multiple innings now at this point.
Starting point is 00:13:33 I would not be surprised. I have no idea, honestly, especially if Soroka has to miss a start. Yes. What they're going to do. I don't know what they're going. I know that they were planning. They pulled up Yilbert Diaz, so they won the extra bullpen, knowing that they were down a starter in Ryan Nelson.
Starting point is 00:13:47 But now that you're down to starters, it begs the question, are you going to bring up another starter? You've got a handful of starters in Reno, some that are on the 40 minutes, some that aren't. Obviously, the options there aren't necessarily the best. but at least they're not necessarily most polished yet. Sure. And, you know, you just sat down Brandon Fott.
Starting point is 00:14:05 He's not even fully stretched and ready to be that spot star that you want him to be. Right. And he was the discussion quite a bit today. Tori had to like emphasize that they are not just bringing Fought up immediately because he is the assumed next starter. He is currently not close to the pitch count that they want him to be at in order for him to start. And I don't think that they can jeopardize. major league games, major league wins and losses by having him come up and only being able to give
Starting point is 00:14:35 them right now 40 pitches. Yeah, he threw, he has appeared in two games started in Reno since his demotion. Both of them were three and three and one-thirds innings respectively. He threw 45 pitches, which is his high so far in Reno on the 14th. So, you know, his spot in the rotation is coming up, but he's not equipped to throw a major league starting game right now. And to be quite honest, with the options they have on the 40-man roster, I'm not really sure who they would pull up. I will say this. There's a good chance they could still call up Brandon just to give them multiple innings as a reliever or as a opener and not necessarily a starter, right? But it feels very much like the Diamondbacks still don't know what they're going to do. And we have more from Tori here after the game about what the plan is moving forward with the pitchers and the injuries.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Here's what he had to say. We were talking about that a little bit just now in my office as far as what the next, you know, the next names are that are going to be joining us. There's no certainty it's going to be fought. He needs to get a pitch count, his pitch count built up. We're going to be very careful with that in light of what's been happening here with injuries. We don't want him to rush through that process. So his time should be coming. I don't know when.
Starting point is 00:15:57 But we need to let them pitch a little bit and get some footing. Given what we've gone through today and knowing what we're going to need on Sunday, we're going to need a fully loaded arm to start that baseball game for us. Had we had a normal game today and a fully rested bullpen, we would have gone a different direction on Sunday. So we're talking about somebody that can give us some length. but every name in our system is is on notice and we're going to find a way. I don't know how they're going to find that way, but I did know that someone was going to suggest that that way might be through picking up Trevor Bauer.
Starting point is 00:16:40 And remember, as Groundhog Mama says, the answer is never Trevor Bauer. It's never the answer. It's never the answer. Guys, a bum. Bad pitcher. Bad pitcher and a bum. Bad pitcher, bad person. Oh, yeah. Period.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Period. Period. Period. But overall here, you know, again, a big win on the night when the Diamondbacks really truly needed something I feel like to lift their spirits. And they did it by, you know, by taking this game tonight. I'm still concerned going forward. And it's, again, it's now just a matter of not just the starting rotation, but the bullpen also being taxed after this game. Michael Soroka, though, overall sounded fairly optimistic, like I said. here's what he had to say about his injury after the game. Yeah, it was warming up for the second inning.
Starting point is 00:17:30 I was trying to get down the mound a little bit and pick up the pace. The tempo was just a little slow in the first and then got out there and, yeah, just got through a pitch and felt a grab in that left glute area and tried to throw another pitch and just didn't feel like I was going to be able to walk and rotate over it. So again, stop decision, especially that early in the game. You know, we got a bunch of games in a row. I knew it was going to have to run a lot of the guys out there. Yeah, they did an incredible job tonight for the team.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Yeah, it just sucks. It sucks to have to do that, too. You've been some diligent about working on your health and staying healthy and having a good year. How frustrating is this to you right now? Yeah, definitely, especially because it's something that I do work on pretty well every day. The lower half is something I've always had to take care of. I'm not going to speculate us to exactly what it is, but I don't think it's anything too serious. Hopefully it'll be minimum time away.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Have you ever felt anything quite like that before? Not in that area, no. Yeah, obviously over the course of an athletic career, you know, hold hammies and whatnot. So just judging based on those, I don't think it's anything too too serious. but again we'll wait and see uh see what shows wrong. That was some good clubhouse ASMR from from the shower shoes squeak into whoever's kid that was screaming. That's what we go through when we're trying to get video during these interviews folks. Uh, but yeah, no, I mean overall again, Seroca made us feel much better about it.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Uh, he did sound positive like he, you know, uh, hopes that the imaging that the both, both he and Lawler are going to get tomorrow is going to come back, um, you know, with, with some positive results. but overall it's just an unfortunate, unfortunate night here for this team to have possibly lost yet another starter from their rotation and Jordan Lawler, who that one might end up being the bigger loss. And also really unfortunate for him. Really unfortunate for Soroka, too. Like, Soroka has experienced over the course of his career, I think every injury that a pitcher
Starting point is 00:19:39 could experience. It's been a long injury history for Soroka. And it was surprising to hear that he has. hasn't gone through this before, but again, hopefully this does not result in him missing time. Yeah, and I, you talk about feeling bad, both of these guys have had very excellent 2026s so far. Right, right. Jordan Lawler, obviously, has spent a lot of time injured and he has spent a lot of time on the field, but when he's been on the field, he's been very good.
Starting point is 00:20:04 He is slashing 316, 409-4-47 OPS north of 850 in so far when he's been playing in games. To lose him again for another extended period of time would be really, really. really devastated this offense that could really use another big bat like him. It sucks. Well, we're going to take a quick break. On the other side of this break, we're going to talk about Lawler's injury and what the offense did tonight, including Corby Carroll, tying a franchise record for triples and also getting more triples in his time as an MLB player
Starting point is 00:20:33 than the Chicago White Sox have as a franchise. Impressive? I think so. Anyway, we are here. Noah, you have such a quick gun here when it comes to this. stuff, my friend. All right, but I'll tell you, this, uh, the husband and wife law team is a wonderful lawyer, uh, lawyer team that is here to help you if you ever experience, uh, a serious injury or accident. The lawyer you hire does matter. And that is because, uh, you want a team that
Starting point is 00:21:02 is behind you that has your best interest in mind and not how much money the firm makes. The law, the husband and wife law team brings hundreds of years of combined trial experience along with certified specialists in personal injury and wrongful death litigation. And that's important because in this state, the state bar has certified less than 1% of all lawyers as specialists in injury and wrongful death litigation, making them experts in the field. And they also go to trial for their clients. They know what needs to be done in a courtroom to prevail in front of a jury and have the experience to do so for you. While they can't guarantee the outcome of your case, they can make promises to you as their client, including that you can cancel your fee agreement with them at any time for any reason. You will receive as much in your pocket as they receive for their fee, even if they have to read.
Starting point is 00:21:45 their attorney fees to do so, and you may speak with one of their lawyers as often as you choose about anything you wish to discuss, including this pile of injuries the Diamondbacks are going through. If you had a serious injury, call the husband and wife law team first at 602-783-8841 or visit their website at the link in our show notes and tell them PHN extension. And tonight is a great night to get down on the Bet365 app, especially with all the scoring the Diamond backs we're doing in this particular game. It was a fun one, and there were a lot of prop vets for you to get down on, Catelle Marte, hit a home run. That's always a good time to bet on that, or at least one plus basis for Cotell Marte. And you can do all this at Bet365. And if you are a new
Starting point is 00:22:25 user, you can get yourself some bonus bets simply by signing up. Thanks to their bet 10, get $200 in bonus bets deal. All new users have to do is sign up and place a $10 bet and bet $365 will toss you $200 in bonus bets, win or lose. It's a lot easier than getting into that chase field pool. We know here from experience. But they also, We also have their early payout offer where you are a winner if your team goes up by five runs with an early payout offer as well on straight bets as well as parley selections being marked as winners. So again, even if the bullpen ruins your game, they can't ruin your bet. Download the app today and use code PH and X365, bet 365 where winning is everything. Gambling problem call one under gambler 21 and over only must be physically located in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Terms and conditions apply in app only. All right. offense tonight did the thing for the Diamondbacks. And again, this was, I guess, the start of them being able to put together some, a nice stretch of a few games here where they put some runs on the board. I still can't really say that with them only getting those four hits in that game two there in the last series they played. But meanwhile, the offense got things going early.
Starting point is 00:23:42 And, of course, it was Corby Carroll. He's doing it in the first inning. Corby and Carroll walked right away and just had himself a huge night. Corbyn't stop getting on base, basically, for this team. And it was a nice effort to see three for four with four RBIs overall. One run scored and a walk. Corbyn was on base four times tonight, started things in the first. Gabrielle Moreno also got a single, but the Diamondbacks wouldn't capitalize on those.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Then in the third inning, Lou James Gruber hit a leadoff double and scored on a Corby single to make it two to one. twins. And I know we got the Cattel Marte's solo home run and a few other runs, but it felt like Corbyn was just involved in every facet of the offense tonight. Every time the diving backs were scoring, Corbyn Carroll was a part of it. When Corbyn Carroll clicks, this team clicks. He is one of the, he's the driving force in this team, whether it's on offense or on defense. We saw him make a spectacular grab out there as well. Oh my God, probably one of the best catches of the night. And that was right after Lordus Guerriel made an incredible catch of his own to Rob Royce Lewis of a hit.
Starting point is 00:24:48 And then Corbyn comes over and makes an even more incredible catch to Rob Brooks Lee of a hit to right center field there. And I mean, again, that one was Corbyn purely doing it with his speed. It's kind of like the triple late in the game. Corbyn is this player that, you know, 98% of the rest of Major League Baseball hits a ball where Corbyn hits it. you kind of watch it go out to the outfield you watch the outfielders pick it up he's probably standing at second by the time they throw it in and it's a double
Starting point is 00:25:17 you look out at the outfield and you see the outfielder pick it up and you look to see where Corbin is and he's already rounding second going full speed to third and he's in there standing up with a triple it's just it's amazing what he's able to do with his speed not to mention the unsung
Starting point is 00:25:34 parts where he like will beat out an infield grounder for a single or simply stay out of a double play, you know, by using his speed. Like it's simply incredible what he's able to do. And, you know, you talk to Tori, you talk to Corbyn, you talk to his teammates. It's almost like people are just out of superlatives to say when it comes to Carol and just what he's able to do on a baseball field. And like you said, defensively and offensively.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Yeah, watching, I mean, I, it's crazy to think that as soon as I saw the ball on his triple that, tied the franchise high. As soon as the ball hit the hit the field, I knew it was going for three bases. Because with Corbyn Carroll, it's just so automatic. You can just expect, like, I'm not even, the bases are loaded. Oh, I'm not even thinking about
Starting point is 00:26:24 the trail runner or whether or not he's going to be able to get to third because the runner is going to have to pull up at third. No, it's Corbyn Carroll. He's going to third base just about every time. Yeah. And Nate Cleveland with a great reminder here in the chat, he says, and Dre is faster. and Dre will not hesitate to remind you that he beat Corby Carroll in a foot race.
Starting point is 00:26:43 He'll never let him live that down and probably shouldn't. I would hang my hat on that achievement myself. But big fifth inning, again, that Corby and Carole was part of. Marte walks to lead off the inning and then Perdomo would hit into a fielder's choice. Marte gets out at second. Perdomo saved it first. With one on and one out, Carroll gets his second base hit of the night. That was a double that moved Perdomo over to third.
Starting point is 00:27:04 And then Moreno would reach on a fielding error by third baseman Brooks Lee. Perdomo scores and at the time makes it a three to two lead in favor of the twins. The twins played some terrible defense tonight, specifically in this fifth inning, but all night long. So again, that's another thing that like, you know, you watch this team, you watch the Diamondbacks lose games. You watch them lose close games or you watch them lose games where their offense doesn't get going. And you feel like you watched the opposition play flawless defense. So, you know, it feels good for things to go. their way, even if it takes some crappy defense. Now, we covered this Twins team. Their bullpen,
Starting point is 00:27:43 second to last. And, you know, their defense, not very good, right? When it comes to outs above average, that those two things were on display tonight. And that's the reason why the Diamondbacks won, and that's the reason why teams are who they are sometimes, even though this Diamondbacks team is still very confusing. Lourdes-Sourri-El grounds out, and that got Corbyn Carroll to score. that tied the game up at three. But then Nolan Aronado, who had a big knight himself, he's single to put runners on first and second. And Vargy, Vargito, what can we say about Ilamar Vargas,
Starting point is 00:28:17 finally comes up with a big hit. And I probably shouldn't say finally. Vargas has contributed, even though he's had his offensive struggles. But this did feel like his biggest hit that he's gotten in the last month, you know. I think it's his second hit of the month, which is kind of crazy to think about. Yeah. I mean, he has regressed harder than anybody. he could have imagined from that first month he had.
Starting point is 00:28:38 But again, this was a two-run single that gave the snakes a five-to-three lead. Vargas gets in the second with the throw, and Diamondbacks essentially had themselves a huge inning, a very cathartic inning once again, like I said, when your offense has been struggling the way that this team's offense has, it was just nice to have that, you know, that big inning where you kept kind of putting the runs on, kept putting the pressure on the twins' defense, and having them kind of fall apart. because that is what happened. You have the throwing fielding error.
Starting point is 00:29:09 You probably could have had three errors, what it felt like in this inning with, with the infielders kind of getting gobbled up by some of those line drives that the players hit. But again, it's easy for me to say that from the press box, right? And I'm not trying to grab a 100 mile per hour screaming liner coming at me. I'm making that play. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:29:29 If Damon was here, he would 100% tell you he's making that play. But again, more offense. And that's probably the best sign as far as this game was concerned is the fact that they continued to add on and tack on. And that is something that, you know, they really haven't been able to do well this year. They have the big inning. They'll have the five run inning. But then they go silent the rest of the game. And it leaves you kind of scratching your head about the inconsistency as much as, you know, having nine runs one night and then going, getting shut out with four runs the next night.
Starting point is 00:30:03 But overall here, the offense kept their foot on a pedal with Cattell Marte going yard for his 12th home run of the year to give the Diamondbacks a 6 to 3 lead. That ended up being really important because the game would be a one run game briefly after Kevin Ginkle gave up those two home runs. But Cattel 108.1 miles per hour off the bat, 375 feet in a long arcing shot over there to the bullpen area. just it felt good felt good to see katell hit that and again it felt good on a night like this to see so many pieces contributing again carol three for four uh kutel martay one for four with the home run perdomo was o for three but he had two walks moreno one for five you had gurriel one for four with an rbi and one of his best hits since returning it felt like like he really got a hold of that ball aranato was two for four with a run scored vargas one for four with two rbi i luller
Starting point is 00:31:01 two for four. And then that brings us to that eighth inning when Lawler got hurt. In the eighth inning, Jordan Lawler beat out a bunch single to lead off the inning. But then he again injured his hamstring running down the third base line or first baseline, came out of the game and it was replaced by Tommy Troy. And let me just say, this is where I'm going to let cogs take over. And I am going to sit here, be sad and drink out of this wonderful beer. bat that Groundhog Mama, aka Karen brought me.
Starting point is 00:31:35 Coggs, the floor is yours. I'm just going to sit here and look sad and be sad because Jordan Lawler getting hurt makes me so sad. And then I had to ride the elevator with him and then we had to talk. And we were just talking. Oh, I'm so sad. That just adds to the sadness. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:52 When Jordan Lawler got, when I saw Jordan Lawler, they're challenging to play and I'm like, okay, good, he's at first. And then they're waiting and they're waiting. and then I see somebody walk out. I see Tor the ball. I'm like, that's weird. And then I see the athletic trainer, and I go, that's really weird.
Starting point is 00:32:07 And then I think I screamed. I don't really remember. It was kind of blacked out at that point. Second injury of the game. Fourth injury of the day, essentially. In a 24-hour span, it's devastating for the debacks. It's just, you really got to hope it is not necessarily long-term injury. But in terms of a position to get injured,
Starting point is 00:32:28 center field is definitely not the worst position. Obviously, Ryan Walschmidt, recently optioned AAA Reno, has been doing very well since he's gone down there. If a long-term injury stint is needed for Jordan Lawler, whether it be on the 15-day or the 60-day I-L, Ryan Walshman, wow, he's really going. Ryan Walshman would easily come back up. We could also see Tommy Troy shift over to center field and take over that role, which we've seen him, I believe, do in Reno, as well as Amarillo when he was learning the outfield position. It's really annoying. They really need this bat in Jordan Lawler.
Starting point is 00:33:03 Did you say 60 day, IL? Get out. Get out. Karen, we're calling Karen over to take over for you. No, it hopefully isn't that serious. I don't even foresee it being that serious. No, I mean, but I will say this. Like I said, in talking to Jordan, it didn't sound,
Starting point is 00:33:19 he didn't sound nearly as optimistic as Michael Soroka did. And you can hear from the man himself, here's what Jordan Lawler had to say about, about his injury, how he anticipates it, or what he anticipates it potentially being, and kind of how optimistic or lack of optimism he has on this. This is what he had to say. Can you just take it so much you would have felt when you running down the line there? Running down the line, just a little tightness.
Starting point is 00:33:50 I thought it was just best to kind of get try in there, and just try to score some runs, and it was a close game. So wanted to help the team as much like that. I've heard your hamstring before. Did this feel anything similar to what you felt in the past? I would just say a little tightness, you know, see them on. You kind of jogged off the field. It gave us a sense of, well, it couldn't be too bad.
Starting point is 00:34:12 So is that how you were feeling then and is that how you feeling now? Just want to go off the field. That broke my heart because, again, he did kind of like, I don't want to say he jogged off the field. He did what Cattel does when he runs up first base after walking. He kind of, like not sprinted, but he ran at a decent pace off field. It was encouraging, especially not knowing it was a hamstring injury at the time. I thought he had stepped awkwardly on the bag because when you watch that play back in, you know, slow motion,
Starting point is 00:34:47 it looked like he kind of maybe had an ankle injury or something of the sort. But again, I was encouraged by him running off the field. But then when he just kind of said, he was just. trying to get off the field, you know, at that I was like, oh, man, this does not look good. It doesn't look good. But hopefully, and I mean, it sucks even more because, like you said, he's been doing so well at a major league level this year. He's been hitting the ball extremely well.
Starting point is 00:35:11 He not only has overcome his offensive struggles with the breaking ball and other things that he had last year, but he's also been really, really good as a center field for this team. Incredibly athletic, very, very well versed in how to play center field at Chase specifically. and it just sucks overall that, you know, here is a potential another setback after he missed so much time with that broken hand. Yeah, it's devastating. He sounded kind of devastated when he spoke about it.
Starting point is 00:35:40 He was, Katie, he says in chat, yeah, he's so reserved and seems super bummed. You could, I don't, obviously, I don't want to speculate too much on injuries of players, but he sounded like he was obviously a little more concerned that maybe he was trying to let on. I mean, he talks about, hey, I was doing what's best for the team, but, you know,
Starting point is 00:35:56 You've got to wonder if we will have that imaging come over tomorrow. And hopefully things turn back good. Yeah, that's the hope. But here is, I don't think we heard from Tori on the injuries to Soroka and Jordan Lawler. Here's what Tori had to say about both of these injuries. I know you guys are very curious about that. So I'll just go ahead and start off with Lawler has a right hamstring, string, strain. He'll begin some imaging tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:36:22 Soroka has left glute discomfort. he will also be getting an MRI tomorrow. So you guys are going to ask about my optimism. You know, there's going to be some imaging, and I'm going to remain optimistic, but, you know, I don't know if this, I don't want to lead you down any wrong road. You know, there could be a situation where one or both end up on the aisle. I'm not sure. So therefore, before I say anything or go any further than that,
Starting point is 00:36:51 I'll just say, well, let the MRI speak for us once we get that tomorrow. Anyways, Michael, just, he felt something on one of his warmer pitches. I asked him if it was when he went in response to when he went down the line to pick up that ball, that swinging bunt. He said it was not. And once you start to hear about that type of discomfort and balance, we asked him to throw a pitch. He said he didn't feel right about doing that. We decided to get him off the field. Similarly, Loller talked about some discomfort when he was running down the line.
Starting point is 00:37:25 line and he's had a history of injuries. We just felt like safety first, pull him off, get him evaluated. Oh, man, it's just devastating for a team that had already devastating news earlier in the day and just continues to deal with the devastating news. And again, as much as we feel like this is only happening to our baseball team, it's unfortunately happening all across baseball. And it sucks. It sucks to have some of the best players injured, and it sucks for this to constantly be just, you know, such an issue when it comes to Major League Baseball. And as great as all of the changes are for the pace of the game and to make it more entertaining to watch, I feel like there's going to come a point where we're going to start after having to question the pitch clock and some of these other things and how they've impacted. injuries overall. In fact, today the topic of discussion before the game a little bit was what about just increasing roster sizes and allowing teams to have more pitchers so that they don't
Starting point is 00:38:37 have to pitch guys so often and, you know, use relievers so regularly. I don't know if that's necessarily the answer. I don't know if a six-man rotation for starting pitching is the answer. It does truly feel like, you know, again, the biggest thing that's changed at least as of late has been the pitch clock and the amount of time that these guys have to take a break in between and, you know, in between batters and, you know, just in general, the strain that's put on them because of how quickly they're being asked to throw in repetition and being asked to throw harder and with more spin than pitchers have ever been asked, you know, to throw. Yeah, I mean, the people love to bring in these things.
Starting point is 00:39:19 Oh, well, Randy Johnson threw this many innings. And Nolan Ryan, there's many innings. Things were different. the game of baseball is wildly different from the 90s and 2000s, as it is now in the 2020s. Absolutely. They were held together with cigarettes and bourbon back then. Yeah. And they're just like, it's unthinkable to have a guy throw more than 225 innings a year, right? That's the first time I've actually heard the proposition of increasing roster size.
Starting point is 00:39:46 And I just for specifically for pitchers so that you just have more pitching, more more, more pitchers available. and you don't have to, over the 162 game season, lean so heavily, especially when it comes to bullpen arms, right? Because the bullpen arms are going to, you know, that those are guys that, in some cases, if they're good, especially a closer on a good team, it's going to be asked to pitch a lot throughout 162 game season. I mean, a lot of these guys in the bowl,
Starting point is 00:40:12 a lot of the guys that pitch today have ERAs in the threes or lower. Some of them have ERAs in the twos. And that's great, but how sustainable is it? Not in terms of pitching, but like, if you are throwing a ton of innings, if you're on pace to throw 60, 70 innings a year, how well is your body going to hold up? Are you going to,
Starting point is 00:40:30 is a guy like Taylor Clark going to maintain that 2-27 ERA across seven things of work because they have to use them in twice a series? Yeah, that's very true. And again, so far, part of the reason this bullpen has been so good has been because the entirety of it has been good. So Tori hasn't had to focus on just using certain relievers,
Starting point is 00:40:51 that he trusts. He trusts everybody, and everybody has kind of come through. Don't get me wrong. You know, there's some guys you trust a little bit more than others, but still, practically every single reliever in the bullpen
Starting point is 00:41:03 has a 3-5-ERA or lower, and that's insane to say about this team. I would not have thought that going into this season. You know what I mean? Like the worst reliever today, right, is Dre Jameson, a guy who has come up because they've needed arms. They need a little bit of length.
Starting point is 00:41:20 But outside of him, you know, Ryan Thompson, a guy was like Brandon fought was that beforehand when he was up, right? Exactly. It's like one guy is not great. One guy has that little bit higher ERA. But like you said, Drey Jameson was kind of just asked to come up due to necessity, due to injuries, and, you know, pitch again at a major league level. And he's not been perfect, but he's still been able to help them win some baseball games. Yeah. So anyway, we also have the fact that their defense.
Starting point is 00:41:50 again was spectacular today, like we said, about the Byron Buxden play, and the catches Gurriel made. They also made some mistakes. You got Nolan Aronado making that error in the third on a Cody Clemens ball, that Cody Clemens just, we just can't get that guy out. And then again, they would come back and get another double play late in the game when they were up just one run in the eighth, and Kevin Ginkle wasn't exactly solid there. They would get a strike him out, throw him out, double play.
Starting point is 00:42:20 with Ginkle striking out Gray and Moreno throwing out Kyler Fedco at second base. And that was a nice play. And the Diamondbacks defense since May 1st has been basically the best in Major League Baseball. Their 994 fielding percentage and nine errors rank the best and fewest, respectively, in MLB. Since May 12, the debacks have 34 double plays turned, which are the most in the majors ahead of the Royals. And since May 1st, the debacks are one of three teams to only have one game with two plus errors. this guy's Tigers and the Dodgers. So defensively, they've just been incredible.
Starting point is 00:42:55 Offensively today, we can't say enough. We already talked about everybody and everybody kind of contributing, but we do have to give out the Kingsnake, and that goes to one man and one man only, and that is Corby. Corbyn, Franklin Carroll, your King Snake, three for four tonight, four RBI, one triple, one double,
Starting point is 00:43:16 and 52 triples in his career, tying Stephen Drew for the most in franchise history and his 52 triples are more than the White Sox as an organization have totaled in the time since Corbyn Carroll has entered the majors. There we're gonna. That one's for the CHTO of White Sox podcast right there.
Starting point is 00:43:45 We're gonna take a quick break and on the other side of this break, we're gonna hear from Corbyn Carroll on this big achievement. And we're also going to take a look at the numbers from tonight's win. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show.
Starting point is 00:43:58 We got that one down. Good job, Noah. Well, pure edibles, of course, is a night. It's perfect for a night like this because we're already in a good mood, right? So I just need maybe to get some sleep. I might want to elevate my mood a little bit. Cog's earmuffs.

Well, big, big accomplishment for Corbyn, Carol tonight. In fact, Tori made sure to tell me that he was going to call Stephen Drew and make sure that he saw that Corvin passed him on the old triples chart there for franchise history. In fact, here's what Tori had to say about Corbyn being a dog. Yeah, it's awesome. I know Stephen Drew coached him. I don't have to call him and say him and let him know that's a really special player passed him by. So it's pretty cool. Yeah, what can you say about Corbyn that hasn't already been said or something that we've all thought about?
Starting point is 00:46:59 He's an amazing athlete. He's a great human being. He happens to be a really good baseball player, and I got a front row seat to it every single night, and I don't take that for granted. Triples are very rare. Some might say they're one of the most exciting plays in baseball. I tend to agree because you've got to have some athleticism and awareness when you're running around the bases. So there's a lot that goes into getting to third base.
Starting point is 00:47:22 He does it quickly, and it's fun to watch. He's an amazing player. We're really leaning on him. We know. We know now. Like I said, when you talk to people about how good Corbyn is, whether it's his teammates, his coach, you know, anybody involved with him, everybody is just like, yeah, you know, you've seen him.
Starting point is 00:47:42 It's incredible, right? It's amazing, like what this guy does, you know, every single day. I feel like he is how we would treat Spider-Man if Spider-Man was actually a real person. He'd be like, yeah, he saves people. He swings around the city. It's like normal. He does this every day, 162 of these a year, right? But still, just amazing that in such a short time in his career,
Starting point is 00:48:00 he's already tied such an amazing milestone, and it feels like this is just the beginning. He might set the bar so high that it might be very similar to like anybody else in franchise history trying to reach, like, strikeouts and pass Randy Johnson, right? It just won't happen. It just won't happen, yeah, for sure. Well, let's hear a very short answer from the man.
Starting point is 00:48:20 himself. Here's what Corby and Carroll had to say about this big milestone for him. Yeah, I felt good, especially there in that situation, give us some breathing room, you know, after they responded late. You know, happy to, you know, do it. Happy to do it. He also said that he did not hate being on the Apple TV broadcast and talking during the game, though he did feel like this would, it would be impossible if he was an infielder to do that. How does Domo do it? Yeah, he's. like as an outfielder, yeah, you're kind of like out here and whatever, like, but an infielder, you just got to stay so locked in and so dialed in. But that man stays dialed in. And again,
Starting point is 00:49:00 a big reason why with his four RBI tonight that the Diamondbacks won this game. Let's take a look at the numbers from this big win. Diamondbacks win this one by a score of nine to five. They had four extra base hits to the Twins three. Runners in scoring position, still not great. Still not great for the debacks. Three for 13. Twins one for eight. And again, this is just, I guess, kind of picking things apart a little bit unnecessarily after a win. But you just still would like to see them capitalize on those opportunities with runners in scoring position more than just going three for 13. It's almost impressive that they scored nine runs. Yes.
Starting point is 00:49:40 Three for 13 with red. No kidding. No kidding. And I mean, runners in scoring position is kind of a stupid stat at times because, again, if you got like, you get a guy on second base, right, to start. an inning as a lead-off runner and you don't bring them in. You went 0 for three with runners in scoring position just because that guy was on second base, right? So, like, I mean, sometimes that number can be a little bit inflated by the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:50:02 getting those lead-off runners on and moving them over to second and such. However, again, you are right. Seeing them go three for 13 with runners in scoring position, just kind of wild, considering that they were able to still put up nine runs tonight. A lot of that was due to the fact of the, you know, errors in such, you know, impacting this one. I'm kind of with Nate there though, down below. I still hate that there were no challenges by the Diamondbacks. I mean, there were opportunities to challenge in this game, and they didn't. I hate their philosophy on it. I hate the fact that they feel like they can take
Starting point is 00:50:38 these challenges at the end of the night and take them to like a redemption stand and turn them in for prizes and candy because that's what it feels like they're doing with their challenges. It feels like they're trying to take them home at the end of the night and save as many of them. Use your challenges. And again, I don't care if it's early in the game, late in the game. I'm so sick of this whole like high leverage situation. And at bat with a runner on in the first inning can be a high leverage situation. For the Diamondbacks, that might indeed be your only chance to score in some games.
Starting point is 00:51:08 So I just, I'm kind of over them not actively using their challenges more. And again, I don't know what the thought process is behind it. but I can't figure one out. There's definitely a learning curve. I mean, a lot of managers are getting used to this. We've seen a lot of player, either you can, I believe you can look by team.
Starting point is 00:51:30 I've seen like the Brewers abysmally bad. Yeah. At ABS challenges. And I think the debacks are up there on being one of the better teams with ABS challenges. As far as conversion rate, yes, especially when it comes to like catcher,
Starting point is 00:51:43 but it's only because they barely use them. Yeah. So like when you take a look at the challenges used by the Diamondbacks overall as a team, they have less than half of the challenges other teams have used, right? And so like Zach, he wants to know, are we saving our ABS challenges till the postseason? It feels like it's Zach. It absolutely does. Is that some rule that they didn't like tell us about? I don't know. I felt like I was like, if you save six in a week, you get an extra one when the playoffs come around, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:52:13 None of that is actually true. So again, it doesn't make much sense as to why the Diamondbacks didn't use their change. challenges more. Expected batting average, a push. Both teams basically at the same expected batting average, and then hard hit percentage, again, not in the Diamondbacks favor overall, 40.4% for the Diamondbacks,
Starting point is 00:52:31 the 25.9% for the Twins. I mean, even the, even the hits and the runs, the Diamondbacks gave up. Like some of them were the most dinky fly ball hits. There was the very uncharacteristic, Nolan Aronado error, which he needs to really stop trying to backhand
Starting point is 00:52:48 balls. That just doesn't seem like it's a recipe for success for him. It's always like weird when I see him make an error. Because he's like the best of the generation. You're absolutely right. It's like jaw dropping for me. I'm like I thought he would just hit that. Arnaudel made a mistake. I just assumed that it would be
Starting point is 00:53:04 fine. Yeah. I mean, you know, you don't win a platinum glove because you're bad at defense over there. But overall here, again, not a flawless night for this team and definitely a night where we come out the other side losing more. I mean, We might have won the battle, but we might have lost the war with how many bodies we lost in this particular game.
Starting point is 00:53:24 And we're going to hear a little bit more from Tori pregame about the loss of both Ryan Nelson and an extended loss for AJ Puck. We're going to do that here after this break. Don't you go anywhere? You're watching the pH next time of that show. Well, financial success begins with the right institution and the right account. And Mountain America Credit Union has the one and only my style checking account, which is exactly that. It's designed around exceptional member service. It is the ultimate spending account for you. It is the midday snacking account for Noah. It is the Cogs fleeing to Utah account. I'm not sure. Not quite.
Starting point is 00:54:15 No. Colorado. It's the my, it's that Derek needs more. you know, make a little of Ultra account for this beer bat now but basically it's the perfect fill in the blank account. Whatever makes your life worthwhile,
Starting point is 00:54:27 Mountain America's My Style checking account is right there with you and it comes even comes with a rewarding perks as we've talked about the past including loan rate discounts and discounts on travel and events and as well they also have that free financial guidance. And I love my shady rays sunglasses, and I should say my entire collection of shady rays sunglasses, because I have that now, partially because every once in a while, when I lose my shady rays and then tell shady rays that I lost my shady rays and they send me out new shady rays,
Starting point is 00:55:15 I find my old shady rays. And now I have two Shady Rays. But that, again, isn't a problem to have because you know I'm inevitably going to lose them once again. And that is why Shady Rays is the best sunglasses company in existence. They have the craziest lost and broken replacement plan in all of Iaware where they have your back. Even on day one, if you lose or break your Shady Rays. Plus, they have a beautiful array of lenses and frames that will make your face look great. And it'll help your eyes stay safe from this sun and me knocking over the mic.
Starting point is 00:55:47 from, like I said, this sun's trying to blind you. So make sure you have the proper equipment to defend yourself. And that is a pair of Shadyray sunglasses. Shadyrays is eyewear that has your back. Go to Shadyrays.com and use code PHNXSR for 50% off two or more pairs of polarized sunglasses. And speaking of Mikhailov Ultra a little while ago, we're going to be having our watch parties.
Starting point is 00:56:11 And of course, we're having some fun next week. These watch parties have been fantastic, by the way. And I can't tell you how jealous I am. I haven't been able to attend them because I've been working doing this show every time we're doing one of these watch parties. But on Wednesday next week, I might be out there. I don't know, I got to check my schedule. Actually, probably not. It's probably Thursday.
Starting point is 00:56:30 Thursday, I'll be out there. Wednesday, probably not. But on Wednesday, we will be out at Backyard Desert Ridge, which is very close to my house for Mexico versus Chechia. That is going to be at 6 p.m. And on Thursday, June 25th at 7 p.m. We're watching USA take on. Oh, hmm. Our squad here on this show.
Starting point is 00:56:50 One of our squads, one of our losing squads. That's at Phillies on Warner out there. And at Phillies, they're going to have those $4 Mikulov Ultras, $6 neutrals, and $6 Stella Artois. Head on over to go phtonx.com slash events for more details and to RSVP. Derek, who was USA playing? Was it Turkey? Oh, it's not Turkey. What is it?
Starting point is 00:57:13 What is the name of it? It's Turkey. Oh, it's a. Turkey A? That's different than Turkey? Yep. I thought that was just a creative way to say turkey. Great. You knew I was avoiding that at all costs because that wasn't, that's not our team. That's,
Starting point is 00:57:25 that's, that's, that's, who's got that? The Cardinals got that? Oh, no. No, I don't know. I just wanted you. You just wanted me to, you wanted to do what Steve did to me yesterday is what you wanted to do. Yeah, the pronunciation has changed. I always thought it was Turkey until the World Cup started. And I was like, where did those two dots come from? Where did that
Starting point is 00:57:43 little till day looking thing come from? Where did the next stuff go from? Yeah, it's all new to me. Oh, well, of course, thanks to, thanks to Steve, I know how to say all the twins players names, but I don't want to. I don't want to know how to say that. I also don't want to talk about Ryan Nelson going on the 15 day I'll, but we have to. This is reality. And it sounds like, again, based on the time frame and based on a lot of things that Ryan Nelson will be out until mid-September. at the earliest. That's what it sounds like. Because basically they said that the amount of time he's out, you got to go ahead, put that much time back on the other side for him to get ramped up and to be back as a starting pitcher for the Diamondback. So if he's out four weeks, that means essentially eight weeks that he's going to be, that he's going to be gone. And that's fairly devastating. But we have more from Tori Lavallo prior to today's game, prior to the Soroka and Lawler injuries talking about this devastating injury to Ryan Nelson.
Starting point is 00:58:51 A couple of couple updates here. I know you guys got a chance to talk to Nellie. So Nellie's been put on the aisle and Yilbert D.S. has been recalled and he's going to throw out of the bullpen. Yilbert has continued to throw the ball really, really well in AAA and this is a very deserving opportunity for him. You know, we saw him a couple years ago. There's a lot of tools there.
Starting point is 00:59:11 There's a lot of weapons. It seems like he is really fine-tuned. it and showing up with showing some consistency so really really happy for him to get this opportunity but it comes to the expense of Nellie so I think he gave you guys the diagnosis he talked to you guys about a flexor muscle strain and a mild UCL sprain I don't know exactly what that means I'm not a doctor I just know that we're going to miss them and there's time down and it's no throw it's four to six weeks they'll re-image and that's where we're at right now.
Starting point is 00:59:50 You know, I hurt for the athlete. I know that he's taking it in stride, doing the best that he can to stay positive. You know, I think the way it happened should show what a good teammate and what a warrior type of mentality he has. He felt something during the game, yet completed the outing and didn't say anything until after the outing. I mean, who does that?
Starting point is 01:00:13 So he did the right thing. and speaking up at the right time, but just step aside for a little while. And when he gets back here, we'll need him, and I'll be anxious to see him go out there and pitch and compete again. Ryan Nelson, by far, has some of the best stuff on this team, and you could only, I mean,
Starting point is 01:00:30 it really felt like it was hard to imagine it being sustainable with how hard Nelly throws. Like, it feels like an injury like this was kind of inevitable for him, unfortunately. But it also sucks because as far as the playoffs, are concerned. Nellie is one of those guys that you would want to see in there in a playoff series. He's one of the best pitchers. He has one of the, he has the best stuff on in the starting rotation, especially that fastball. It's one of the best pitches in all of baseball,
Starting point is 01:00:59 not just on the diamond bag. So it's a, it's a devastating loss. Devastating is a is probably the word I would use to describe it. You kind of took the word out of my mouth. It really, really stings to see Ryan Nelson. Even if the results had necessarily been there through all of this year. You know that picture that we've seen from the last couple years is still in there. And you know, you really got to hope that he comes back this year. I mean, if a late September return is what they're slated for. If they're still in it, it's a really big ad for them, right?
Starting point is 01:01:26 Same thing with Corbin Burns. We talk about Corbin Burns. If they both come back around the same time, that's a real, real addition to your rotation, kind of down the stretch where you're really going to need it. Yeah. But it's things that we're talking about having to wait for him to come back. Well, and again, you're right about that because that could be right around that time where our starting rotation is running out of gas.
Starting point is 01:01:47 So to have two guys returning that are essentially fully rested, with Nellie, I feel a little bit better. With Corbyn Burns, I still have my concerns about him, you know, being Corbin Burns when he returns from Tommy John surgery like this overall. But, you know, it's just amazing because I think we have a super chat that brings this up. And it's from our guy, Coolbro, who says, and thank you, cool, bro, for your super chat. What did Byrne say? Never Enough starters. He didn't say never enough starters. What Corvin Burns specifically said was you never make it through a season with just five starting pitchers. It was like a monkey paw situation. It's like he said that and you could see the universe start to turn against us if you would. I don't know. If it was a movie, that would be where you saw like the magic smoke go through, you know, the vent and now all of the sudden terrible things were going to happen to us.
Starting point is 01:02:45 That's what that moment now feels like thinking back upon it. I've thought about him saying that probably once a day for the last two years. You know, that's how much it stuck in my head. It's true, though. And you see it not only with this team, but you see it with every team in baseball. I just can't believe. I cannot believe that we fold ourselves into at one point once again thinking, what are we going to do with all these starting pictures we got?
Starting point is 01:03:16 There's too many. We got too many. You can't have this many. Are we going to do six-man rotation? Are we going to do backpacks and stuff like that? No, no piggybacking. We're not going to do that. What are we going to do?
Starting point is 01:03:27 We're going to make Brandon fought a reliever. Why? Because we have too many starters. What else will you do with your guys when you have too many starters? Oh, God. I miss those days. Those were good days when we had AJ Puck still returning and Corbin still returning.
Starting point is 01:03:41 and now we don't know if either one of those guys will actually be back in time for a regular season. I'm more optimistic about Corbyn Burns right now, but Tori did provide us with an update on AJ Puck as well. Here's what he had to say about the setback to Puck. We got a diagnosis on A.J. Puck as well. He's got a capsule sprained. He's in a no-throw situation, and he will get re-imaged in four weeks. So that's also another big loss, but AJ was doing all that he could to get back here and join us and just went out there in the middle of competition, felt something under his arm and mentioned it, and I'm glad that he did, and we'll see what happens in the next couple weeks with his return, and I'll keep he posted on what's going on there.
Starting point is 01:04:34 We should be thankful that the Diamondbacks bullpen has been as good as it has been. It went from being a situation where we thought these guys were going to save us and that when they returned, that was the only way we were going to have a competent bullpen to the guys that are here stepping up and almost every single one of them, at least for the time being, delivering their best season of their careers. And that goes to Taylor Clark, Juan Moillo, Paul Seawall with how long his career has been. Like each one of these guys are putting up career bests for their numbers. And I mean, it's the entire, you know, bullpen with the exception of Dre Jameson right now, right? So it's, it's, we should be thankful that, you know, again, that we didn't essentially at the end of the day need A.J. Puck to come back for this bullpen to be an asset to this franchise and to this team. However, you know, it does feel like there might be some regressing to the means that comes along. and we see maybe this bullpen,
Starting point is 01:05:37 especially with how taxed they are after today's performance, going through a long stretch forward without very many days off, that that might end up being the opposite and they might come back down to earth a little bit. However, I don't want to go there just yet. I do want to hear from Tori, though,
Starting point is 01:05:54 one last time before we get out of here. And this is because Tori was all of us in this moment, and there was a brief, you'll see it here where he took a pause, and you can just feel the pain that he is going through. That is all of our pain in watching this team lose guys like AJ Puck, Ryan Nelson, Jordan Lawler, and Michael Soroka all over the course of one single Friday. It's been brutal. It's been brutal. I'm not going to lie.
Starting point is 01:06:25 We're going to try to get everybody healthy. We're going to try to get everybody back on their feet. It's going to be a little bit longer process for some. and it's been a tough 24, 48 hours for this ball club. But we know that we have to budget for very hard days. We talk about this a lot. It's not going to go smoothly all the time. You've got to be adaptable and find your way.
Starting point is 01:06:50 And there's going to be another group of guys that are going to get an opportunity, and I want them to shine in this time that they're going to be stepping up to that next level. But, yeah, it's been brutal. It's been a really tough time for all of us, the medical team coming in and talking to me about things I'm not used to talking about at this clip. But we're going to get through it. That's what we do here. Katie in the chat says, can we budget to buy more arms? I feel like just on Monday we talked about how the Diamondbacks simply needed to go after offensive players, first baseman, DH.
Starting point is 01:07:29 The bullpen was fine. No changes needed to be done with that. fact, the starting rotation is fine. We'll get Corvin Burns back. You fool, Derek, on Monday. Back then, stupid Derek, in your stupid words. Because look, now we are in a position where they're, I mean, it's hard to think that the Diamondbacks won't try to add possibly available pitcher, not Trevor Bauer, or trade for one. Again, not Trevor Bauer. So, and they wouldn't have to because he plays for, what, like Long Island Ducks or something right now, or in the Mexicans? league. I don't even know where he plays. And I don't
Starting point is 01:08:04 care because there's no, we don't need to talk about him. We're not picking him up. But shout out, of course. We got Russell bringing up. I was going to hit your membership anniversary. Russell, I promise you, because we are very thankful to have a year for seven months.
Starting point is 01:08:20 Russell says, Corbyn tied the triples record, F the baseball gods and the injury demon for screwing us over the season. Now what do we do with our starting rotation because fought is ass. Who do we trade for? Derek. I don't know. I mean, if Damon was here,
Starting point is 01:08:34 this would be where Damon comes in and says. Joe Ryan? Terrick Scoobel was the way answer we were looking for. Well, I love Terry Scoobel. Terrick Scoobel and Reed Detmer's and Joe Ryan and Byron Buxton and like travel. Everyone. Can we trade for Joe Ryan while the twins are here?
Starting point is 01:08:50 Exactly. Just leave him here. Yeah, just leave him here. But shout out to you, Russell. Thank you so much. And of course, our beloved Groundhog Mama, aka Karen, celebrates nine months of membership, long enough of a member to have a new baby cogs, nine months. Good job.
Starting point is 01:09:07 Love the new office, PH&X, love the co-host too. She's talking about me, right? No, she meant this guy. Let's go, DeBex. Yeah, we really need. I mean, honestly, maybe this galvanizes this team. Maybe this is one of those situations where, you know, this team finds a way to start winning games and more games than we thought they could. because at the end of the day, none of these guys, at least right now, are lost for this season, right? None of them, we have not heard a single word about any of them not coming back this year. That might be the case. We might not see Corbyn's play this year. We might not see Ryan Nelson on the mound again this year.
Starting point is 01:09:45 Might. But let's hope that's not the case. And let's hope that overall, all of these guys are able to come back. And in the meantime, the squad that's here can, you know, hold down the fort until those guys come back. they've done a good job so far, and I feel like it's just kind of par for the course with what these boys have been put through in 2026. Shout out to
Starting point is 01:10:06 Coolbro. He says, Jeremiah, I love get your arm ready again. We saw us throw the other night. There might be something there. Also, Cool, bro, we need updates on you and Mrs. Coolbro and what's going on with that. We just need to know when the wedding is because at this point, we're all just waiting for that
Starting point is 01:10:21 big update. But again, thank you to Coggs for being here. Big shout out to all of you guys for coming through. Karen for her nine months of membership and driving this guy here. You can follow all of us on Twitter and social. I'm at Kaff underscore Caveman with a K. Coggs is at TR Cogs. Sweet baby Noah does not want you to follow him.
Starting point is 01:10:40 And if you do follow Noah Woolbrook anywhere, unfollow him. That's what he wants you to do. He wants you to unfollow him and leave him alone, basically is what he wants you to do. Our show is at PHNX underscore DVax, but all roads do lead to at PHNX underscore Sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Again, thank you for your time. you stopping by. Let's hope that the Diamondbacks can figure out a way to keep winning baseball games,
Starting point is 01:11:03 even if they are missing some of these guys. And we'll be back on Monday to talk about what happened over this weekend and hopefully talk about the Diamondbacks pulling off a sweep. We're going to be joined by Stefan Carey on Monday, as well as maybe that guy, Dalton Feely. He might stop by as well, too. So make sure to join us then for that. Until then, hope you guys all have a wonderful weekend. Hope we can celebrate some snakes, wins.
Starting point is 01:11:25 and shout out to all of my fellow dads out there. You guys, the ones that are putting in the work, appreciate every single one of you guys. And I don't know, happy Father's Day to myself, I guess. This feels weird to say. But love you guys. Thank you again for your time. Appreciate you.
Starting point is 01:11:43 We'll be back on Monday until then. See you around and remember kids. Baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when you don't lose four players in one single day.
