Starting point is 00:00:00 Ildemarovar Vargas is the greatest baseball player in the history of the game. Jose Fernandez is already my rookie of the year, and we never doubted Tim Tawa. Podcast presented by our friends at Circle K. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX, and I want to see. see your cactus lights in the chat. Throw them up for the dub. It's Damon Dog, aka Damon Farrell, on the ones and twos, a.k.a. El Perro today.
Starting point is 00:01:18 Because the Diamondback, That's what they call it? Do the damn thing. Damon, they do the damn thing. But welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast. This show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365. Bet365. We're winning on days like this is absolutely everything.

I got the turn the clock ahead, Jersey, rocking gonzow today. The spirit of this man was with us.
Starting point is 00:01:58 And of course, Damon let me down by not wearing his so we don't match. But I'm not going to dwell on that like I did during her watch a long. In a day like today, that's what we're going to start off the show talking about. No, that's fine. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Well, we shouldn't because what we should talk about is the Diamondbacks pulling off one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history. One of the biggest comebacks in the last three seasons.
Starting point is 00:02:19 and quite frankly the biggest win of the season today, beating the Padres by a score of 12 to 7 after being down early in this one. Diamondbacks improve to 15 and 12. They have 15 wins here before the end of April. And Damon, you know what that means. Send that little perdomo and his sprained ankle up the mountain. What a win today. The Diamondbacks were down six.
Starting point is 00:02:54 early in this game and were being no hit by Padres pitcher Michael King. But just like what happened to the Diamondbacks yesterday, a huge seventh inning, and you could argue a huge eighth inning, really piled on and gave the Diamondbacks one of the biggest comebacks, like I said, in franchise history and leads to the Diamondbacks winning this one by a score of 7 to 12. Jose Fernandez, huge in this game, recorded his second career three hit game today. And the Diamondbacks six runs come from behind when versus the Padres is the largest in team history since they did it on June 5th at the Braves last year. They won by a score of 11 to 10 against the Braves, if you don't remember.
Starting point is 00:03:38 They had a six run deficit three times in that game. They were down 6-0 in the third inning, 9 to 3 after the 6 inning and 10 to 4 after the 8th inning. Since 2022, this game is the fourth comeback of six runs with the largest being a 7th.3. and run deficit that they came back from against the Phillies back on August 29th, 2012. And man, this was a day where the Diamondbacks offense absolutely looked dead in the water. It was one of those days where the offense really was struggling to get anything going. And we were doing a watch-along, which made it even more miserable.
Starting point is 00:04:15 But Damon never stopped believing in Tim Tawa. And that's a damn fact, Derek. Yeah, that's a damn fact. No one, I'll tell you what. There's no, there's no recorded, there's no visual history, David, of us. In fact, wishing that Tim Tawa would have leaned into that pitch that barely missed him, just one pitch before hitting the Grand Slam. No, no, no, no, definitely.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Definitely do not go back to our watch along to find the moment when Tim Tawa hit the grand slam. Because, because Derek and I beforehand were saying, we never have believed more in a Diamondbacks player than Tim Tawa in this exact moment right here. We were like, this is the guy that we want in this spot. 100%. This is the guy you need. up in this moment and what is Tim Tawa do? He rewards our faith, Derek, and hits it over the fence. And you'll never find two bigger believers in that man than this podcast right here. We absolutely, we're not talking about sending him down for Ryan Waldschmidt at different portions
Starting point is 00:05:08 of the watch along. For the majority of the first half of this year. Yeah, no, that wasn't a thing that was brought up multiple times. And you're right. We didn't say, hey, you got to wear that one, Tim Tawa and get the RBI you, you clown. And then he goes and hits a home. run. Unbelievable stuff. We definitely never said the clown part for sure. Never said that, but unbelievable stuff, man. I can't like for the stuff that we were saying, it's just poetic, frankly. And I know. And it's, it's beautiful. It's beautiful. It's what we love about baseball. It's why I get up here and you'll hear it later. And we'll, you know, this is just a little quick preview for the people, but I have to apologize again, I guess, to Elamara Vargas.
Starting point is 00:05:47 I mean, wait, let's, let's get there. Let's get there first, because first we got to talk about Jose Fernandez, right? Yeah, yeah, but I just wanted to say that, like, you know, like, it's great that a guy like Tim Towell, when everybody's out on him is like, that's when he has his moment of his whole career. And you're like, holy shit, man, baseball is just crazy like that. And no one, no one's, go back and watch the watch long. No one's happier to be laughing at themselves than these two dorks right here. A hundred percent. As that goes over the fence and we're like, we're screaming laughing being like, can you believe the things we were saying 15 seconds ago about this guy?
Starting point is 00:06:21 Because that's what baseball is. That's why baseball is such a wonderful game. Ildemarro Vargas, honestly, is why baseball is such an amazing game. Like we say what we say about Tim Tawa. But in a way, like Vargas and Tawa have a lot of things in common. And in fact, we felt like we feel about Tim Tawa about Vargas at times during his career. And at times when he's been with this Diamondback's team, that's what makes what he's doing so special and so incredible. Right.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Yeah. And again, this was a day where the offense was dead in the water and the very first guy to get this. team on the board is the rookie that shouldn't even be here yet. The guy that leads all National League rookies and hits Jose Fernandez steps up. He hits a solo home run there in the fifth inning to finally put the Diamondbacks on the board. I mean, before that, they were being no hit until what, the fourth inning, Damon? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:11 When Lordus Guriel Jr., who only has one hit this entire season, got a bloop freaking single to break up the no hitter. One of the worst hits you'll ever see. Right. And just get the thing going. It reminds me of when Patrick Corbyn had that no-hitter going against the Giants. Oh, my God. Like what was that six years ago?
Starting point is 00:07:30 And Brandon Bell hits against the shift like a 40-mile-per-hour ground ball. And you're like, oh, sweet. So that's how our perfect games goes away. Sweet, that's cool. Well, I mean, again, there's a, there was a, this one was one of those games that felt very much like even that home run, considering the Diamondbacks were down six to nothing at that time, felt, very, you know, felt, felt, yeah, great. It's great to see Jose Fernandez, especially of all, of all players contribute. But up to that point, it was pretty much a one, two, three inning,
Starting point is 00:08:01 almost every single inning for the Diamondbacks, just striking out a lot against Michael King. Michael King was cruising, in fact. He ended up with eight strikeouts of the day, and I think he had seven through three innings. And it looked like he was going to have 15 before the end of this game. But there, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Ildemar Vargas steps up to the plate. He hits his sixth home run of the year and extends that hitting streak to 23 games. And I mean, I feel like we just keep talking about this Vargas hit streak overall, excuse me, Career Best 23 game hitting streak, longest active streak in the majors, second longest since 2004 or 24 behind Ryan Reynolds, 25 gamer. So he could pass Brian Reynolds for having the longest hit streak in the major since
Starting point is 00:08:47 2004. Vargas has a 20-game hitting streak in this season. Obviously, we know this just further extends the franchise record for a hit streak to start the year, but his 20-game hit streak in this season is tied for the major second-longest hit streak to start a season since 1998. He ties Pablo Sandoval at 20, and if he reaches 24, he will have the longest hit streak in Major League Baseball to start a season, dating back to 1998 by passing Red Gert. Edgar Rentaria.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Edgar Rentaria, there is a name I haven't heard in 5,000 years. His streak is also the fifth longest single streak in club history now. He now moves past, he moves into fifth exclusively. Kattel Marte and Danny Batista both have a 21 game hitting streak that he could tie with his next game. And then he would simply have Tony Womack's 24-game hit streak and Luis Gonzalez's 30-game hit streak ahead of him. And again, at the time, the Diamondbacks were still down 7 to 2.
Starting point is 00:09:47 And it very much felt like as exciting as it was for Bargis to hit, you know, extend his hitting streak. It felt like that was going to be primarily what Damon and I were going to be talking about on this podcast. Little did we know the very next inning, the Diamondbacks would absolutely wreck the Padres bullpen. And it started with a man who Damon and I have deemed is just an absolute fraud in Padres reliever David Moore. Oh, yeah. Give me a second here, Derek. Yeah, Damon, you do your thing. go ahead and pop off screen.
Starting point is 00:10:18 I think I'm just going to go out. Wait, actually. I don't even think I need to pop off screen. No, I was going to make this happen. We surpass the portion of the show that we typically reserve for you to apologize to tomorrow of our days. Sure. Sure.
Starting point is 00:10:29 You want to go ahead and take care of that right now? Give me a second here. I'm going to get my water. I'm going to turn things over to you. You go ahead and do your thing. What's up guys? Damon Dog here as I am on, I think every post game at this point, Derek, if I'm not mistaken. I mean, it's been 21 or 23 straight.
Starting point is 00:10:45 I'll tell you what. It certainly feels. like it and your boy is here to apologize to Ildamaro bonds. I'm sorry, I'll demarro Vargas, once again, a future All-Star, a 2026 All-Star campaign that I'm hoping to, I don't know if people will even allow me to be the headline of, or like to be the captain of that ship at this point, but like I'd love to be, I'd love to be a part of that movement because this guy is unbelievable. He's, you know, he's carrying this team. game in and game out. And I honestly just can't believe that this is what we're watching at this
Starting point is 00:11:23 point in this season. Like it's, it's gotten to the point where like I'm starting to believe it actually is like not like 350 sustainable, but like I'm like this guy is an actually like a really good baseball player. No. I'm sorry, I'll tomorrow. That long story short, I'm sorry. I'm wrong again. I'm a big idiot. Like I said, I put my clown nose on in the morning and I get my car with, you know, my tiny car with my 15 friends. And we, we, drive down to work and yeah I you know this is this is why you watch this podcast to watch
Starting point is 00:11:53 Damon and Derek B. Clams. It was a yon bothers me as the part where you were like he's a really good baseball player right? Like as if you were questioning it still. This man's hit streak has not been a hit streak that has been he's not been it's not been gained through like single here in this game one for four one for four one for four
Starting point is 00:12:09 look at the effort that he's put forth. Look at the numbers he's putting up look at an 11.05 OPS with a 367 batting average. This is not just a small sample size. This is his entire year. He's been doing it all year long, right? And of course, Vargas is that guy. He's that spark plug for this team. And in the very next inning, like we said, this fraud for the Padres comes up as a relief pitcher. His name is David Morgan and he claims to be six foot tall and there couldn't be anything that was more
Starting point is 00:12:44 untrue. Apparently, he's claimed to be six foot tall his entire career, and I just, I still cannot. That's the thing, Derek. That's the thing is that he. I thought we were doing ABS measurements now, no? Well, I guess on hitters, but not on pitchers. The thing about David Morgan that I, that I found out is that he was a position player this whole time. He's also a position player. He's a pretty high-level hitter in college. So he was, like, playing shortstop in, and like, number one guy out of the, out of the rotation. But like, yeah, it's, it's, it's pretty unbelievable. when you look at what they're trying to sell us on it regarding David Morgan. I mean, David's putting together a little bit of a screenshot here to really just kind of drive home as best as we can.
Starting point is 00:13:27 The idea here that this diminutive David is in fact six feet tall. That's what he's claiming, Damon. It's just, I mean, it's just pretty ridiculous, Derek. If I do say so myself, I, you know, he doesn't look anything close to six feet tall. Let's throw that thing up there. I mean, mostly it was just based on the eye test, right? Yeah. I tried to get a picture of him crouching here.
Starting point is 00:13:53 I thought that would be. It was really going to drive your point home. Yeah, 100%. Look at this guy. Yeah. I mean, he's one of the smallest pitchers I've seen on a baseball field. He's, this guy is five foot nine. Let's call it.
Starting point is 00:14:06 I'm looking at him. I'm like, that guy's Damon's size. He's five nine. He's about 175. I know it's a lie, Derek, because I was doing research on it. I was like, no way, this dude's six feet tall. And his college baseball team that he played at when he was a freshman and a sophomore, when he was like 18, 19 years old, has him listed at 190.
Starting point is 00:14:25 And now the MLB website has him listed at less pounds than that at 26, because he's my age. He was born in 99, and he's 18. Now, so apparently he's lost five pounds from age 18 to 26. I mean, that doesn't seem too conventional. I don't know. You're sleuthing. Your sleuthing has gone pretty far here, but I'm going to say that if he's six feet tall, I'm six and a half feet tall.
Starting point is 00:14:51 And we'll leave it at that and we'll move on to the idea that it didn't matter how tall he was. Six feet tall, five and a half, seven feet tall, regardless of how tall he was. The Diamondbacks wrecked him in the seventh inning. It started, of course, James McCann came in to the game for Adrian Del Castillo, who apparently dislocated his left ring finger and had to be removed from the game when getting hit by a pitch behind the plate. Another injury, lo and behold, shocking.
Starting point is 00:15:19 We do have some injury updates, though, that we'll get to at the end of this episode. So hopefully some good news in regards to that. But Jose Fernandez singles, Nolan Arnato, who's been much better at the plate, looked much better, and the results have been there. He singles,
Starting point is 00:15:35 and then Alec Thomas singles to load the plate for known power hitter, Tim Tawa. And of course, Tawa, power. Tau you experience the power feel the power of tower. Grand Slam, baby.
Starting point is 00:15:52 And that was huge, right? Grand Slam hit off of the liar there, Morgan, 1001, 100.1 mile per hour. The fraudre of all fraudsre. Yeah, the fraudier of all fraud, 363 feet, 363 feet there. Damon, I believe it would have dinged in most ballparks. right? Did we ever determine that one? Tim Tawa's 15 out of 30 ballparks. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Would not have been a home run at Chase Field. So thanks for the home game, you guys. Tim Tawa hits that bomb. And at the time, still was not enough to make up the deficit. That put the Diamondbacks down by a score of, what was it, six to seven at the time, seven to six, right? But the Diamondbacks did not stop. And I'll tomorrow Vargas does it again.
Starting point is 00:16:39 I almost want to make Damon apologize again. He doubles right with the bases cleared. He gets to second, puts himself into, you know, into scoring position. Catell-Marte gets him over to third. Corbyn-Carrill walks. And then our LG, baby, Lourdes Gouriel, finally turning things around based on the threat we were going to take all of his swaggy drip away, doubles, scores Ildemar Vargas, scores Corbyn Carroll, gives the Diamondbacks an 8 to 7 lead.
Starting point is 00:17:07 Biggest hit of the season so far for Lourdes. just a huge moment for the Diamondbacks. And then James McCann comes back up, Diamondbacks bat around in the inning there in the seventh inning. He grounds out to end the inning. But then, again, more in the eighth, which again is something that Damon and I were talking about during our watch-along, which is this is one of those few games
Starting point is 00:17:30 where the Diamondbacks were able to not only have that big inning finally that occurred in the seventh, but then they were able to add on to it. They kept attacking the Padres, you know, bullpen. They went after Rodriguez. They went after Martin Marasio. Both guys gave up two earn runs. Maranaccio, excuse me, gave up four earn runs there. That was all in the eighth inning where the diamond back just continued to pour it on. Again, Jose, excuse me, yeah, started with the same guys. Jose Fernandez at the top of the inning singling. You got Nolan Aronado singling, Alec Thomas singling. That loads the bases. Tim Tawa. No grand slam this time. He
Starting point is 00:18:09 grounds out. But then Ildamaro Vargas, triples, brings everybody home, scores Fernandez, scores Aronado, makes the game 11 to 7 at the time. And then Marte even comes in and brings Vargas home just to add to the lead, making this 12 to 7, which is where the game ends. We don't have to have a nail-biting ninth inning with Paul Seawald on the mound with just a one-run lead. Paul Seawald in Mexico City felt like a recipe for disaster.
Starting point is 00:18:36 It really did. I said it when it was 8-7 and we were like you know like we were waiting the eighth thing and i was like well you know we got a hold here in the eighth so let's keep the main thing the main thing but i really don't want to have a one run lead with with paul seewald throwing high 92 mile per hour fastballs to podre's hitters that felt like at least one was going over the fence i mean as much as we have discussed paul seawald's you know lack of success or as failures paul seawald is still seven for seven and save opportunities so for now until that changes i don't see the diamondbacks going to someone else late in those games.
Starting point is 00:19:11 But yeah, I think he's been pretty good in the safe situation. Exactly. They're probably feeling like a million bucks with him coming into to save games at the moment. At the same time, though, there are guys that are developing that could really fill that role better than Seawald. I think Juan Morillo continues to be impressive. He's unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:19:27 And Johnny Lasagna has been an excellent addition to this team. Loisiga and, you know, Michael Soroka, those two guys have been such key additions on a budget. budget additions to this team. So we're going to talk about the pitching here on the other side of this break. But man, the offense just completely woke up today. Cannot say enough about what these guys were able to do. And it was just great to see. Obviously, we have Lordus Guriel Jr. going two for four with two RBI and a walk.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Great to see him have that day after struggling for so long and just having the one hit this season. But what more can you say about Jose Fernandez? Three for four. One RBI today. three runs scored. I mean, the guy's magnificent. He's hitting 342 with an 859 OPS. He is by far the top rookie of the year candidate.
Starting point is 00:20:19 And I think- You can't even bet on him right now. I mean, yeah, which is crazy. I don't think he is qualified. He might not be qualified. I don't know how that, I don't know why he wouldn't be qualified. I think he is at this point.
Starting point is 00:20:28 I think that they're just kind of like, they don't really know how to place him. They're like, should he have odds that are like the best? Because right now he might be the rookie of year if the season ended today in the national league. But then they're like, so is it sustainable? Like I feel like they just don't really know where to place him. But Diamondbacks fans, based off the eye test, I think, want to get all over that if they're badders.
Starting point is 00:20:49 Because he looks really, really good. I mean, three for four with a home run today, two singles, and just was such a huge catalyst in the offense. He just kept things going. And again, those, the bottom of the line of hitters somehow get the job done. And I'm still considering Vargas to be a bottom of the line of hitter. You can put him wherever the hell you want. but he's still one of our six through nine guys, and those guys have literally been picking the team up
Starting point is 00:21:12 and putting it on their back and carrying it. And today was another example of that. Alec Thomas two for four with two runs scored, and then obviously Tim Tawa only one for four, but four RBI with that huge grand slam. And without that, the Diamondbacks aren't anywhere close to the Padres. I mean, who knows how this game goes without that grand slam. But overall, it was just nice to see the Diamondbacks
Starting point is 00:21:35 not only start to put things together, and put together a very impressive comeback here offensively. On top of that, just really, like, keep their foot on the pedal. Not just be satisfied with gaining the lead, not be satisfied with coming one run short, and also having that sense of urgency to score these runs before we saw the bottom of the ninth inning. You went into the bottom of the ninth against Mason Miller.
Starting point is 00:22:01 It wasn't over unless Lordus Guerriel Jr. was at the plate. Then maybe we had a chance. but it was pretty much over if you go to Mason, if you're hitting against Mason Miller with a one run deficit there late. So kudos to this team for what they were able to do today because it was just very impressive. Defensively, they made some great plays today. I mean, this was a weird day.
Starting point is 00:22:22 After I opened my big stupid mouth, a lot of those balls that weren't actually flying over the fence for the Padres magically started going over the fence. I did feel a little responsible for that. But, man, the Diamondbacks just found away. Jose Fernandez feels he feels a little raw still at shortstop like he's too powerful and doesn't know how to rein himself in. However, again, just still an impressive, you know, way to fill in for Geraldo Perdomo and take over there at shortstop. And not only fill in defensively, even though he did have that little bit of a throwing error there late, but also fill in offensively and deliver the big day.
Starting point is 00:23:00 But the biggest day of all goes to the guy that we're. not going to call drip we're going to call him vargy uh because if katell call him vargy i call him vargy he is our king snake ill tomorrow vargas 23 game hit streak three for five today one home run four rbi i and a triple and uh again just cannot say enough about the season that this man is having damon and i were discussing it but i truly think that there is an all-star conversation that needs to be had. And I don't even feel like Vargas needs to keep up this current production in order for that to be sustained.
Starting point is 00:23:39 Like he doesn't need to have a 40-game hit streak. I think what he's done has been significant and historic. And I think realistically, if this man is able to keep his batting average anywhere close to 300, he absolutely deserves a consideration for an All-Star. And as far as the Diamondbacks go, he deserves consideration to be the team MVP because I don't know where they would be without his production this season.
Starting point is 00:24:01 Him and Jose Fernandez have saved the season so far. There's no other if-ans or butts about it. Like those two have been godsend for this team for what they needed. And for also, Perdomo and Catell struggling for portions of the year so far, right? Like Catell's only hitting like 230. You know, Perdomo was picking it up. But, you know, before the, he got, you know, kind of hurt yesterday. But, you know, it's still, his stats don't look great.
Starting point is 00:24:27 And it's been a lot of, you know, these two guys that have been tasked with. playing first base a lot with Carlos Santana's injury and Pavin Smith's injury and they got their opportunity and they ran with it. And, you know, there's, there's no telling where this team might be right now if Pavin Smith and Carlos Santana did not get hurt. And those guys were not given these opportunities and these ABs were, I think that since then, they've earned opportunity in other spots. Like, Jose Fernandez has started playing a little bit of third in Nolan Aeronado's off day or a little bit of short if Perdomo needs a rest or Vargas plays in lieu of Cotel Marte at second base from time to time. But the majority of their moments have come at DH in first base,
Starting point is 00:25:07 which I think Pavin and Santana were, you know, kind of slotted in at those places. And, you know, it's just, it's, there's not enough words to describe how big of an upgrade that's been for this organization. And, you know, I, I don't know if hitting 340 and 340, 50 is sustainable for both of them. But if they can just continue to, you know, play winning baseball like they have thus far and be versatile in the infield, it's just, it's such a massive advantage for this team. So I'm, I mean, I'm fired up to have both these guys in the organization. Jose Fernandez looks like he'll be a staple of this team for a long time.
Starting point is 00:25:47 And Ildemar Vargas, he might be 34, but my God, is he playing like he's like 25 in his first MLB stint right now? I know. Shout out, shout out Vargy as well. And I mean, again, I'm rocking the jersey of a guy named Luis Gonzalez, but that's also a guy who suddenly had himself some of his best years, right? I mean, not quite at 34, but we were talking about we're going to try to get Gonzo on the show at some point pretty soon here, right? And we were talking about with, you know, trying to maybe ask him a question of like,
Starting point is 00:26:16 who does he see himself or like a player that maybe has a similar career trajectory of like, you know what? It hasn't been all that great at other stops. He's been a solid player, but he hasn't been a star player until he got to Arizona and he became a bona fide superstar at the plate, right? And it feels like right now, like, El-Demar Vargas would have to be that answer because he's bounced around. He hasn't been all that great. And just, I mean, it looks like a beach ball is being thrown at him right now with how many times he's connecting with it. And then even like when he's not connecting with it, he's finding the hole and a basis clearing triple.
Starting point is 00:26:53 Like it's luck is on his side right now and it's it's awesome to watch. I have to say San Diego Padres fans the last couple of days have been fairly nice in the chat. So shout out to Fabian. He said, good job, D-backs. I thought we had you. Good game. Good split. And good to the Padres who, again, I will tip my cap to that organization for going through
Starting point is 00:27:15 everything that they're going through right now and still playing the level of baseball that they're playing. In fact, we went over the Padres numbers. and they're not even doing anything in like particularly well besides their bullpen which the Diamondbacks kind of rocked today right their bullpen ERA was one of the highlights that the Padres had kind of going on for them everything else were the good good numbers but just nothing that necessarily would put them as the as an elite team that would be beating the Dodgers right now for the National League West right so again it's going to be a battle all year long I'm just thankful that the Diamondbacks were able to battle back in this one and I hope that they can
Starting point is 00:27:52 the fight. I think at the end of the day, during 162 game season, all any of us want is for our team to be in the race, to be in the hunt, and to be watching them play meaningful baseball games when September comes around. And hopefully we'll get to see the Diamondbacks do that again. Today, though, today is a cause for celebration. There's a little bit of tequila in this Casual Amigos thing. I'm going to go ahead and just drink most of it. Drink that right now. I'm actually not even kidding. I literally did drink most of it, me and Kevin. Woo! It was a, hey, it was a fun Arizona College basketball season.
Starting point is 00:28:22 but let's parlay that into the baseball season, Derek. Yeah, let's do that. Well, let's take a break. And on the other side of this break, we are going to talk about Ryan Nelson, unfortunately struggling again today, but the bullpen picking him up and picking this team up with a quality performance.
Starting point is 00:28:37 We will do that on the other side of these words. Don't you go anywhere? You're watching the Diamondback show. Well, actually, it's the Lomar VARGIS show. Starting point is 00:31:19 Corey in the chat says, I got to believe Jose is rookie of the year, even if his numbers drop off a bit. And you're not wrong. I think that the one thing that sets maybe Jose Fernandez apart perhaps from some other rookies is the Diamondbacks need for him. I know Tori was being very, was using him very sparingly at one point, which upset so many of us because we just wanted to see him in every game. And it felt like any game that he was in, the Diamondbacks were winning. At the very least, he was giving them a better chance to win, and that's what these baseball players are all about. right but i almost feel like jose fernandez only enhances damon and and my need to have ryan waltchmidt on this team right you see the impact a young player that's exciting and has
Starting point is 00:32:03 been talked about can have on this team and jose fernandez is one of those guys that it's like the legend of jose built very quickly he's still only 22 years old it felt like just yesterday he was a teenager in this organization i was surprised to see josepherson Hernandez making the splash that he did this spring. I was like, is that guy even old enough to drink yet? And we were talking about, you know, him potentially hitting the Major League roster this year. That seemed like such a far off dream as it tends to feel with young players
Starting point is 00:32:34 when they're making that Major League debut. But his debut, his call-up was out of necessity, was out of a lack of bodies and a lack of players available for this team. But it was also built in belief. this team knew what kind of special player he has evolved into and they knew he was ready to be called up, even though the rest of us might have been surprised at how quickly it happened. It just goes to what Damon and I were saying earlier about Ryan Walshman. It's not to discredit Tim Tau because without his efforts today, the team doesn't win this game.
Starting point is 00:33:08 But it is to say that like it does feel like not pulling the trigger on some other young, exciting position players that you have, considering the need you currently have right now, I don't know. It feels like it's a hesitation without reason. It feels like they should continue to try to tap into their young talent and see what else they have. I'm no scout. I'm no coach. I don't know. I'm just looking at Ryan Waldschut's numbers and the success he's having at a AAA level.
Starting point is 00:33:39 But Damon and I both very much feel like this team needs a guy like him. And it would require yet again another difficult decision. to be made, not to mention that he might need to get sent down based on other roster moves with guys returning from injury. We have now, including Eraldo, Pardomo, a pile of injured players, a mountain. Like I said yesterday, we could send Pardomo up a mountain of injured players for our little graphic that we do there based on how many guys are injured. However, those injured players have opened the door for these other guys to get playing time,
Starting point is 00:34:14 and that has turned into what we're seeing. And those guys, the Ildemar Vargas's, the Jose Fernandez, as we discussed, those are the guys winning baseball games for this team right now. So very, very thankful that they are producing the way they are and very thankful that this team is fun and exciting to watch as they are. However, it once again feels like once the offense starts picking things up, the pitching has to start sucking. And in this case, it's starting pitching,
Starting point is 00:34:43 and we get yet another struggle of a performance from Ryan Nelson. This is a very good Padres team. So I'm not going to take anything away from Nelly, but it's getting to the point now where I think it's legitimate to have concerns about Ryan Nelson. He didn't seem like he was fooling any batters today. And man, when I say he threw a lot of fastballs, he threw 93 pitches today. It's 63 of them were fastballs.
Starting point is 00:35:10 Like, Damon, I think we have his pitch chart here. it's it's fat it's all fastballs and cutters and i mean a cutter is basically also a fastball so of his 93 pitches 88 of them were a fastball or a cutter his slider was not working at all he would not even trust it he threw it one time and his curve ball he threw four times he had no breaking pitch to compliment his fastball at all and he just threw fastball after fastball He got nine whiffs on the fastball. But this is very much not sustainable, even with Ryan Nelson's fastball being one of the best in the game.
Starting point is 00:35:52 He got hit a lot. And again, it's just not the Nelly that we've known. He gave up seven hits today, six earned runs. He walked two batters. He struck out four. He gave up two home runs. Both of them were to Manning Machado. Both of them, I think, were home runs in 30 of 30 ballparks,
Starting point is 00:36:10 even though they look like they barely clear the outfield wall. Again, elevation doesn't seem to be a factor here when you're determining that ballpark factors. But I have my concerns about Ryan Nelson. And the only thing I think that I guess makes me calm down is the fact that the Diamondbacks might not need Nellie to be in the starting rotation for much longer. We're still pending to hear how Zach Galen is doing
Starting point is 00:36:34 and if he's going to miss any time from the starting rotation. But, you know, of course, with Corbyn Burns on the rise And once this team is at 100%, it looks most likely like Fott and Nellie will be the guys that are probably in the bullpen or perhaps in Nelson's case, maybe Nellie with two options left, two minorly options,
Starting point is 00:36:53 maybe he gets set down to Reno to kind of work on some things and to stay stretched out as a starter. Perhaps that would allow them to use Brandon Fott more as an actual reliever and less as a guy that they need to keep stretched out in the bullpen to replace one of their starters. Brandon Fott can be a very effective weapon out of the pen
Starting point is 00:37:12 if they don't try to make him throw 70 to 80 pitches every time he goes out there. That's not a reliever anymore. That's just a starter that you're disguising and trying to fool us is a reliever, right? Again, what the D-BACs need is a weapon, and Brandon Fott could be a very effective weapon. That's what frustrates me about that with Fought,
Starting point is 00:37:33 is that if they just don't have them go through the lineup multiple times and are more careful about once he starts letting base runners get on, that he can be incredibly good for them out of the pen and not a liability. However, yesterday, Tori Lavala left him in for far too long and cost them the baseball game. The Diamondback should have won both of these baseball games. That's my feeling, right? But Ryan Nelson, again, he's still, I still feel he's very effective if he can develop and throw a secondary pitch.
Starting point is 00:38:05 It doesn't need to be, you know, where he throws it 50% of the. the outing or anything like that, he just needs to develop something that can help him compliment that fastball. He cannot, he cannot go out there and pitch six innings and expect to throw a fastball 80 times out of 100 pitches. Brian goes five innings pitch. He gives up seven hits, six earn runs, walk two, four K, two home runs. But the bullpen, the bullpen today was outstanding. And again, flowers to the bullpen. Kevin Ginkle wasn't perfect. He gave up a home run. He gave up a one run to make it at that time, a seven, I believe it was seven to two, seven to one baseball game. And that, that lead felt very daunting and impossible.
Starting point is 00:38:46 And it very much felt like the game was over. But Ryan Thompson came in, gave up two singles, and then somehow magically just got out of the inning. Looked like Ryan Thompson was going to have another disaster of an outing, two singles, no outs. And then poof, next thing you know, double play is turn. Another out is registered and Ryan gets out of the inning. And Juan Murillo is a stud energy. and a certified stud and a bona fide G, and you can't teach that,
Starting point is 00:39:12 or a certified G and a bona fide stud. I forget, I'm neither of those things, so I don't know what the proper order is, but I do know that Juan Murillo, as the setup man has been lights out. He lowers his ERA to 1.98 on the season. He got two strikeouts in his inning of work, and Jonathan LeWizaga comes in,
Starting point is 00:39:31 does give off a lead off hit, but then shuts the door on a, you know, drama-less ninth inning, to give the Diamondbacks a 12 to 7 victory. One earned run allowed by the bullpen today. And again, just very much a stellar performance here from the bullpen. Great point here by Grito. Grito says, what if Nellie is injured and trying to pitch through it so as not to be replaced?
Starting point is 00:39:58 This might explain overthrowing a fastball. It very much might. I mean, and it very much would explain, I don't know, like the last, of being able to control or trust that slider. At times when he's throwing that slider this season, it's been nasty, especially as an out pitch compared to his fastball, right? So, I mean, I don't know if he's injured as much as, you know,
Starting point is 00:40:26 other factors here, right? Like Ryan Nelson, a lot of information is out there about Nellie. I do know that the competition has never really felt, like it's brought out the best in him. Like Nelly has pitched the best for this team when they just simply needed him and he needed to step up and he was a guy that replaced another injured pitcher or something like that. I felt like we didn't see the best out of him this spring and maybe you're right. Maybe a nagging injury, something that's less of something that's going to completely keep him off the mound, but something that's going to still impact him out there could be the culprit here.
Starting point is 00:41:06 I also have felt like in general it's just kind of been been a thing going back to spring training that, you know, it didn't seem like he was, had that same competitive fire as far as, you know, trying to earn this role and trying to fight for this role as some of the other guys. He's also a younger player that seems pretty passive and kind of just a team guy that wants to do whatever the team needs them to do to win baseball games. regardless, I still very much believe in Ryan Nelson. And I know that, again, when you have one of the best fastballs in baseball, the rest can come to you, right? So really, he just needs to figure out a way to get some sort of complimentary secondary pitch going that he can at least throw out there every once in a while that he believes in and trust. Nelly hit 99.2 miles per hour today is what he maxed out at.
Starting point is 00:41:59 So again, that fastball is good. that fastball is good. But again, you can't sit there and throw 70% fastballs and expect to get away with it to a team like the Padres specifically, you know, a power team that's going to kind of hunt for those fastballs and wait for them to come. And when they know they're going to get a lot of them, you know, there's a good chance that a mistake can be made here or there,
Starting point is 00:42:23 which is what happened, especially with his cutter. You know, his cutter isn't 99 miles per hour. That one was 92, 93. He left one of those in the zone high up to Mani Machado and Mani did not miss with that one. But hats off again to the bullpen for getting the job done, keeping this game close, only giving up the one-earned run. And hats off to the offense for giving them more than just a one-run lead to hold on too late there. But again, just a great win today. The Diamondbacks are off tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:42:54 So that bullpen has a chance to recover and be back at 100% as they can. going to Milwaukee for the series with the Brewers. And again, you know, this is another series split, meaning the Diamondbacks did not lose this one, and now the Diamondbacks still have not lost more than just the series with the White Sox and the opening series against the Dodgers. That more than anything continues to impress me about this team. The fact that they find a way to split a series, win a series.
Starting point is 00:43:26 I mean, even in that White Sox series, it very much felt like they were going to sneak one away there in the finale and take this one. And unfortunately, Seawald had one of his bad outs. But we're going to take a quick break. And on the other side of this break, we're going to take a look at more of the numbers from this two-game series in Mexico City. And I will probably scream some more about the lack of promotion
Starting point is 00:43:47 for MLB's only international series of 2026. Don't you guys go anywhere? You're watching the P.H. And next Diamondback Show. Well, Bet365 wants to help us get out. of here early. We got out of here a half an inning early. We didn't have to see the bottom of the ninth inning. And thanks to bet three six five, you can get out of games early with their early payout offer. Look, I don't ever like to leave games early. I felt like leaving this one early.
Starting point is 00:44:15 I felt like starting the post game show halfway through this one. Glad we didn't. Because instead what we saw was a terrific comeback from the Diamondbacks and of course a 12 to 7 victory. But guess what? If you bet on the Padres in this game, you are a winner with an early payout offer from Bet365 because you are a winner when your team goes up by five runs with an instant payout or with your parley selection being marked as winners. So when those bums from San Diego blew this game and let the Diamondbacks come roaring back to win it, the Diamondbacks then, and if you bet on the Padres, you didn't believe in Tim Tawa, but you do get your money in this situation.

So let's take a look at the numbers from today's or this two-game weekend series
Starting point is 00:46:10 that Major League Baseball did an absolutely terrible job of promoting or displaying for a national audience. Sorry, I'm not bitter. I'm not still bitter. Do I sound bitter? A little bit. Diamondbacks win this series here by a score of 16 to 13. They outhit the Padres 22 to 17. Both teams had four home runs.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Starting ERA, bad for both teams. Bad for both teams. The Padres was 4.50. Diamondbacks was 6.75, thanks to that six-run run performance today from Nellie. Relief pitching ERA, really bad for the Padres, 18, after giving up a lot of runs today. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks, five earned runs in game one, just won today. for a 5.40 ERA and the series record in Mexico City, one game apiece. This was a fun series.
Starting point is 00:47:08 I think they picked good teams to go down to Mexico City and to represent Major League Baseball. I thought the Padres, obviously, as Damon pointed out, not only is their nickname in Spanish, but so is their city name. San Diego was looking at me right in the face the whole time, and I'm just an idiot staring at it. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks, much to my delight, wore their Serpienti's jerseys yesterday, which was something I was going to ask Tori about this week and thought was entirely too silly of a question to bother the manager with. But really, when it comes to growing the game and building the game of baseball, that's what this is all about. Not to say that necessarily needs to be done in the Hispanic culture, because Hispanic people, no matter if you're talking about Mexico, you're talking about North America,
Starting point is 00:47:52 when you're talking about the Caribbean, a majority of the players in baseball come from these countries and come from a country of Hispanic origin and nature, right? And that is the reason why I'm so disappointed that Major League Baseball didn't use this as a chance to celebrate this international series. They did not view it as a marquee event,
Starting point is 00:48:12 and I know I already went off on my rant about this yesterday, but Damon wasn't here to hear it, so I'm doing it again. This is performative for Damon, but that's how I feel deep down inside, nonetheless. This is ridiculous to me. It's ridiculous to me that once again here on a Sunday where you had so much going on sports-wise that they didn't feel the need to nationally broadcast this matchup between the Padres and the Diamondbacks. It is the only international series of the year and it just very much feels half-assed. It very much feels like they didn't care and they're
Starting point is 00:48:43 just making up the one that they promised during the COVID 2020 season and whatever. It doesn't feel like they put effort into it. It doesn't feel like they put effort into it. It doesn't feel like they did anything to make this exciting. Don't even get me started on my lack of being able to find pictures from this series on Imogen. I will scream about that for an entire 60 minutes. But I also mean looking through social media and such. Ben Verlander, God bless the man, was the only one doing the true work of covering the series
Starting point is 00:49:10 like it deserved to be covered. Where is the coverage for something like this, considering this is the only international series you're playing all year long? Where's the promotion? I just, I've never been this disappointed in baseball, considering the big deal that they make out of, out of other, out of past years, going to London, going to Japan, all of this stuff that they've done in the past. And again, this is just, this very much feels like major league baseball themselves didn't care about this series occurring and happening, right? So, I mean, I don't know. I've said what I've said about this, but I know Damon, I know how you feel.
Starting point is 00:49:49 I know you are a big fan of growing this game in different ways, especially when it comes to growing this fan base for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And this just felt like a huge miss for them. And again, internationally, they're in Mexico City and everything. What they did was great. But again, I'm talking about growing this on even a national level here in the United States and giving these two teams that performed in Mexico City, that platform for all baseball fans across this country to see, not just those that live in the
Starting point is 00:50:24 market of the Padres and the Diamondbacks. Yeah, I mean, it definitely feels like baseball missed the mark on this one, as they often do with these kind of events where no one cares about the draft, no one cares about, you know, like these free agency, it just lasts too long. And they never make events out of the things that are happening on the baseball schedule or the baseball calendar. But I was pretty shocked, Derek, when I turned on the TV and I was like, oh, this is this on the Eback's TV.
Starting point is 00:50:52 Why is it not on Fox or ESPN? I mean, I know they don't have the ESPN contract anymore, but Apple TV maybe. Like something that is, you know, maybe makes it a special game because as you said, it's the one international series they have all year. And it just feels like, it feels like they didn't promote it at the proper level where they even like, you know what? Like usually I feel like recently they have been promoting this stuff a lot better. They have.
Starting point is 00:51:17 That's what I mean. That's why I'm almost frustrated with just the way they promoted this one. It hasn't been the one that they promoted in the past. Like the field of dream stuff gets promoted super heavy or like if the Dodgers are playing somewhere, it's always such a big deal. But when it's D-Backs Padres, oh, who cares? They'll put it on their local RSNs and, you know, it'll be, it'll be what it is. And you're like, what? It's so weird.
Starting point is 00:51:40 Yeah, it's pretty odd, man. I would think that they would try to do a little bit, a little bit more here. And, and yeah, I mean, it's two teams that. I think should have pretty big fan bases in Mexico. You would think, you know, geographically, it's the two closest teams. It makes perfect sense why they would be the teams that are sent. But let's address something that our guy, Jose Romero, also brought up on Twitter. And that was that at the end of yesterday's game for an Arizona Diamondbacks home game,
Starting point is 00:52:07 they played the Mason Miller entrance hype video with all the music blaring and all the hype and all the excitement. Does not sound like a Diamondbacks home game to me. and that's kind of the problem. And yes, Cornholio's right, the Red Speedway game was promoted all over the place, even on this podcast, right?
Starting point is 00:52:25 Yeah. We had nothing to do with that. The Braves and the Reds. That's Derek Ball. He loves. Derek loves him. I love stuff like this. That's why I think other,
Starting point is 00:52:33 everybody does. Baseball fans love stuff like this. And again, I know it's just baseball being played in a different stadium in a different country, but that is the reason why you promote it. It's your job.
Starting point is 00:52:47 to make it into something special, right? And again, also, when you're going someplace that has an established fan base like the Padres do, and you're going to see 75 to 80% of the fans they're wearing Padres gear, I don't think it's very fair to make that a Diamondbacks home game, right? Say what you will, and who knows how this goes, but also at a Diamondbacks home game,
Starting point is 00:53:09 we do not play the intro music for Mason Miller. We don't do that. Let's not start now, all right? Unless he's on our team, which I would pay. That would be pretty nice. I would give all everything for that. Yeah, that'd be sick. Let's take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:53:24 I need a drink of Casa Amigos tequila again. And, of course. Another swig. Yeah, I need another swig. Well, Damon, we thought the worst yesterday because of course Danhausen cursed this team, as many of us know. And that means that we are going to have all the injuries
Starting point is 00:56:16 and all the bad luck. We got a setback on Gabriel, Moreno who was supposed to be joining this team in Milwaukee. He will no longer do that, which is a shame considering the injury now to Adrian Del Castillo. We don't know how long Adrian Del Castillo will be out or if he'll miss time. Damon said sounding like a delocated finger might be okay, better than some other things that it could have been, could have been broken, could have missed a significant time.
Starting point is 00:56:42 So hopefully the fact that that's just a dislocation will have ADC back soon. I mean, yeah, I'm obviously like, I'm not super plugged in on the medical side of things. It just sounds to me like a fracture or a broken finger would be a lot worse than a dislocation. 100%. 100%. That's totally true. But the worst news is that we heard yesterday that Geraldo Pridomo had sprained his ankle on that play where he did not manage to turn to. And things kind of got out of control for this team.
Starting point is 00:57:13 We also know that Zach Gallen got hit by a comebacker yesterday in his right shoulder. according tori lavalo before today's game both of those situations are progressing in the positive direction he said that heraldo perdomo felt much better today and it sounds like for all intents and purposes perdomo will miss being put on the 10-day iL which should have him back in the lineup here maybe maybe in will milwaukee but perhaps after that against i believe the chicago cubs following the milwaukee series and that cubs team is playing some really good baseball so the diamondbacks could absolutely use him back. Meanwhile, Zach Gowan had some, apparently a mark on his back that was a exactly a baseball, including the stitches on the bruise, but he is doing okay and it sounds like Zach might be ready to make his next start. So hopefully that is the case. And we do not need to have Brandon Fott move back into the starting lineup or change anything or have anybody miss any more time. I just, I don't even know what to say anymore in regards to this. mountain of injuries other than kudos to the diamondbacks for continuing to find somebody to step up
Starting point is 00:58:24 and perform for them and finding a way to win these baseball games yeah i mean they look i know i know how quickly things are over around here this podcast is the most we're back it's over podcast you've ever seen in your entire life is that is that is that on me is that my fault i'm not naming names and i'm not pointing fingers i'm saying that that feels like that might be one of us might be more responsible for that than others. I mean, one of us might be more responsible for the it's over part and the other person might be responsible for declaring we're back entirely too long. You know, I'm on the we're back team just as much as you are.
Starting point is 00:58:59 Right. Right. I think two of us say we're back. Maybe one of us says it's over. Okay, well, we'll see. But anyway, regardless, right? I mean, this team, you know, today was a perfect example of that. And I'm not even blaming for people, people in the live chat for being out and saying like,
Starting point is 00:59:15 this is it. But there was an official declaration at one point when Damon went down to get us some delicious beverages where people were like, this team sucks, it's over, the season is over. And like as much as I can relate to that, I will say like, this team is so weird and is going to be ever changing throughout the year. So as frustrating as it might be, as much as right when we think that they're a good team, they might start making us think they're bad. team. I think this team is going to be fun to watch from bell to bell. And I do think that this team right now has enough parts that are, you know, doing better than we ever thought they would that makes you believe when Cotel Marte and Corby and Haroldo Pardoma can all have multi-hit
Starting point is 01:00:04 nights in one night, this team is going to put up 20 runs on the board with the performance of those six through nine hitters that have been doing the work so far this season. Nolan Aronado is somebody who people were ready to DFA and put in the in a retirement home. And this man has been incredible lately both at the plate and today making that final out in today's game and looking like vintage Arnado out there. Right. Like the guy is incredible still and deserves his flowers. It just things took a while for everything to get going, you know, as it does sometimes with baseball. Hopefully this is the beginning of Lordus Guerriel getting things going at the plate. And again, And with him back, you feel very confident about this team.
Starting point is 01:00:45 It's just baseball is baseball. And at times, things can look so over for a team, you know, especially when your offense isn't really producing runs and manufacturing and doing things that a baseball team does to win baseball games. And again, even with having 15 wins, this team still hasn't been running, you know, on all cylinders at any point this year up to this point, right? So who knows if that's going to happen? It might never happen.
Starting point is 01:01:15 But if they ever get to that point, you have to feel like this team is, in fact, going to once again be a wagon. We'll wait to make that declaration, though. No jumping to that conclusion used yet. Wagon talk? Wagon talk. Are we back? People are saying. People have said stuff about the yoffs.
Starting point is 01:01:32 That's all I'm saying. I mean, big time when here. Big time when hearing accordance of like the division and like in that. Because if the Padre is won today, not that obviously. there's a ton of baseball left, but like, you know, like you just wouldn't feel great about being five and a half games back from the division lead. Now you're three and a half. You're still right in the thick of things with the Dodgers and the Padres. And you're still six and four in your last 10, despite, you know, maybe not playing what you feel is your best baseball recently. Funny enough,
Starting point is 01:02:01 this whole division, Rocky's six and four in their last 10, one, three in a row. Seven and three giants, one, two in a row. Six and four debacks, one, one in a row. Padres lost one in a row, seven and three in their last ten, however. And then the Dodgers, five and five in their last ten. The only team without a winning record in the NLS in their last ten ball games. Anything's possible. Anything's possible, including the Dodgers having bad things happen to them, right? Not to say that you wish bad things upon bad people, but sometimes you do.
