The Arizona Diamondbacks put together an impressive rally after Zach Gallen has a rough night on the mound,
but they come up short in extra innings losing to the Mariners by a score of 7 to 6.
We have more on this game.
Kattel Marte's bat missing and why we hated the way that that was managed in extra innings.
Don't you go anywhere we're starting right now.
Well, ski and welcome in to a losing edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks postgame show,
presented by our friends at Circle K, right.
here in Studio K. I'm not going to yell. I'm too exhausted for that. This Diamondbacks team
warm me out. But welcome in to Studio K. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor,
PHNX. I'm joined by a sad dog on the ones and twos tonight. So that's your dog, it's my dog.
It's definitely not a Zach Callan's dog, Damon dog on the ones and twos. Bart, bark to you, buddy.
We had a good time watching the Diamondbacks play the Seattle Mariners, even though we did have to
evict Damon from the watch along.
I was ejected at one point, but I made my way back out.
I mean, it was warranted.
It was warranted.
And during that time, the Diamondbacks did put together an impressive comeback.
But like I said, they ultimately fall short in extra innings by a score of 7 to 6.

This one sucked tonight, guys.
And when I say this one sucked, I say at least it was a fun watch.
At least the Diamondbacks had a fight in them.
At least their offense performed.
But as we've said so far, the reason why the Diamondbacks have won as many games as they have is because of pitching.
and tonight, Zach Gallen really let this team down.
He gave up a number of home runs and just couldn't seem to come through in the biggest moments of this game.
He added additional base runners at times right before giving up the home run and just in general did not have himself a good night on the mound for the Diamondbacks.
They do drop to 31 and 25.
Their five-game winning streak does come to an end.
And the big story tonight is even though Zach Gallen,
did give up all of those home runs in this outing tonight.
The Diamondbacks still fought back valiantly after being down by a score of 5 to 1
and made this game interesting, tying it up in the ninth inning at a score of 6 to 6,
sending it into extra innings, and eventually losing on a Randy Rose Arena walkoff double by a score of 7 to 6.
There's a couple of things that we're going to get into in this game,
but the offense, even though it started slowly, was not the problem in this one.
And the Diamondbacks, once again, found ways to put together key hits.
But even with all of the hits they had and even with scoring six runs,
the Diamondbacks were still three for 17 with runners in scoring position tonight.
They had 13 hits and there was no reason why they shouldn't have been able to win this game,
if I'm being honest.
They absolutely should have won this one.
they had bases loaded several times big moments in fact in those bases loaded moments they only got
one run out of those moments and again it felt like they definitely wasted squandered some of those
opportunities but still they did they did score enough in this one and I'm not going to blame the
offense for not getting it done they just it just felt like they could have exploded for far more
than they put up on the board perdomo did get the offense going with a lead off home run
was solo home run in the fourth inning.
That was his third of the season.
It was 353 feet to right field.
Only 93.3 mile per hour off the bat.
Not even a hard hit ball, just a well-hit ball.
And good enough to...
That's a classic Perdomo home run.
That is a classic Perdomo home run.
And at the time, it made the score three to one, right?
After Zach Gallen gave up three runs early in the first three innings,
this was the Diamondback's first run of the day.
And then something odd and mystical.
kind of happened. Damon excused himself briefly from our watch-along. If you were here,
you might have had a chance to see it. And oddly enough, during that watch-along, the Diamondbacks
could actually hit when Damon left. It pretty much seemed to only happen when Damon left,
and everything came together. Damon walks away and with one out, Corby singles,
Pardomo doubles to put runners in scoring position with just one out. And then Gabriel Moreno steps up
and hits a huge 2-RBI double
to cut the deficit at the time
from 5 to 1 to 5 to 3.
Then you have Adrian Del Castillo walking.
Ryan Walshmit singles to load the bases,
and then Ildemar Vargas hits a grounder,
one-run scores to make it 5 to 4,
then Jose Fernandez hits an RBI single
to tie the game up at 5.
We begged during our watch-along
at the beginning of the game for Jose Fernandez
to have a big game,
and he delivered for this team.
Three for five tonight for Jose.
Jose Fernandez.
And again, a big night where he might not have come up huge in a lot of these moments,
but he did come up big in this one in the sixth inning where he had that RBI single
to tie the game up at five.
Then you have Tommy Troy come up to the plate.
He walks.
And then Marte strikes out to end the inning.
And if we're being completely honest about tonight's offense, it felt like Catelle
Marte's bat was the difference here.
Yeah, solely missing.
I mean, it really did.
I'm not saying that this one's on Catell.
I'm not blaming you on Catell.
I mean, he's been unbelievable.
So we're not going to, it's baseball.
Like, it'd be stupid to sit up here and be like,
this one's Cattel's fault tonight when he's been carrying the team on his back for the past couple of weeks here.
A thousand percent.
But, but it's objectively, he had some opportunities tonight.
And it's the guy that you want up in those spots and he didn't come through.
Absolutely.
And entirely too many of those spots tonight.
Yeah.
felt like every time you turned around,
Catelle was up to the dish with runners on and no production.
He goes 0 for four.
He did walk twice.
He struck out only once that time to end the sixth inning.
But it would seem that at least right now,
this offense goes how Cotell Marte goes.
And again, of course,
you're not going to expect Cotel Marte to have a 162 game hitting streak
or go three for five every single.
single night.
That would be pretty cool.
That would be so cool.
A 162 game hitting, or a 600 average for the season.
I would be on board with either of those things, right?
But still, it still feels like, again, you know, the offense tonight scored six
runs without Marte doing anything at all, right?
So you just felt like that one thing would have tipped everything in their favor.
Just could tell having one big hit in one of those big moments.
But unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
and the Diamondbacks weren't able to really tack on much else.
Until the ninth inning,
and then in the big ninth inning,
the Diamondbacks were once again able to load the bases.
Unfortunately, part of loading the bases,
I mean, it started with a Geraldo Pardomo lead off single.
Again, Perdomo involved in it,
and then a Gabriel Moreno single.
Those two guys were huge tonight for this team.
Prado and Moreno, they picked up the slack
and did their best to try to win this baseball game.
Nolan Aronado came in to pinch hit for Del Castillo in the previous inning, or not in the previous
inning, I'm sorry, he came up to a pinch hit for Del Castillo, I believe in the seventh inning.
He gets hit by a pitch and he ends up leaving the game.
And what was so, I guess, kind of terrifying about that, Damon, is that Arnado got hit by a 97.8
mile per hour sinker in his guard.
And it still was enough to bring that man to his knees.
Yeah.
The hope is he's fine.
We discussed it a little bit in our watch along.
Hope it's more of kind of like a funny bone.
I think that that would make sense based off of what happened, right?
Like a complete stinger right in your funny bone.
It's just, it's amazing that even when you're wearing a guard like that, that a ball that
comes in and hit you, that hard can still cause pain.
So, but yeah, I'm sure he's fine.
I'm sure it was just a momentary thing.
The bases do get loaded there.
And then, you know, you got Ryan Waldschmidt striking out.
That was big.
Yes.
You know, him not at least being able to deliver a sack fly there to score one run.
Then Ildemar Vargas reaches on a fielder's choice that was fielded by Josh Naylor.
and he did not get Vargas at first.
The run scores.
You got Predomo scoring, Gabriel Moreno to third,
Tim Tau to second,
and the Diamondbacks tie the game up at 6-6.
And again, this just felt like such, you know,
such a wasted opportunity.
You're talking about bases loaded with no outs
in the top of the ninth inning in a one-run ball game.
And all the Diamondbacks were able to get
was one single run out of it.
You got Jose Fernandez popping up
into shallow infield, outfield area
where J.B. Crawford gets it in the infield fly,
and then Tommy Troy grounds into the ground out
to end regulation, essentially,
or to end the ninth, top of the ninth for the Diamondbacks.
Luckily, the D-backs were able to get some good pitching
out of their bullpen, just not out of Brandon Fought,
who did give up that extra run that, you know,
put the Mariners ahead there when the game was tied earlier in the game.
As far as offense, though,
plenty of good performances to go around tonight.
Corby and Carroll was two for six with a run,
scored. You had Perdomo, three for six, three runs scored, one RBI, one home run, one double.
Perdomo, what a big night for him. Big night, and he's back, not a double, I'm sorry,
Perdomo. Oh, he did have. Yeah, he did have a double, yeah. Just a big night for Berdomo.
And one of his outs was like a dude, like, hit it off the edge of his glove and knocked it and
volleyball set it to himself in the air and caught it. Yeah, yeah, that was his first out, right?
Like that could have been a hit as well. Yeah, absolutely. And then you got Jose Fernandez giving us
the thing that like I said earlier that we begged for just a multi-hit game from him he went
three for five with an RBI and a double just it just felt good to see this team come alive
offensively late and fight back after they were found themselves down right this is one of those
things that good baseball teams do they're able to fight back they're able to have a deficit of
you know five to one and still overcome that I know it's not huge but let's admit it with
this Diamondbacks team, five to one is in many cases, in many games this year,
an insurmountable deficit for this offense with the way it's been performing.
This offense stepped up and came back in a big way tonight, and they didn't stop fighting.
But I will say that in extra innings didn't love the way they kind of handled extra
innings either with this team.
You had, of course, Tommy Troy, good speed, starting on second base.
Ketelm, Grounds out, moves.
them over to third. You have the game-winning run essentially 90 feet away, or at least the go-ahead
run, considering you're in the top of the inning. And then you just have Corby and Carol Carroll
grounding out and Herald O'Port, Pardomo, grounding out. That was probably the most disappointing
at Bats of the night. And I know the world is on those guys' shoulders at that point, but if there was
And all the time, really. What's that? And all the time. Yes, and all the time. True. Very true.
It's never not going to be on their shoulders. But if there were three guys you wanted up.
in the 10th inning with someone at second base to score that run, that's the guys.
Those are the three.
So it's not like the Diamondbacks didn't have the right personnel in there.
It's just been an unfortunate thing where those three guys have not, you know, weren't
able to deliver tonight.
They've delivered all season long.
Perdomo delivered in this game.
Corbyn's been consistently good.
And we don't even have to get into how hot Cotel Marte has been.
So, but this is one of those things where this, this was a poorly executed extra innings on offense and on defense.
I do feel like there was just ways to maybe, you know, small ball it a little bit.
But Damon talked me down from that.
I kind of wanted a suicide squeeze there.
But that's just because I like when exciting things happen.
Overall, though.
You were watching some college baseball highlights.
Yeah, we were.
We were watching some wacky stuff going on.
He's Carolina do a suicide squeeze against Tennessee and their regional.
Yeah.
I get it, Derek.
Yeah.
And I mean, again, Colton in the chat says, I think if Troy goes on contact, he scores,
there's a couple of things there.
I think that there were a few of those, right, where we felt like if Jose Fernandez
may have taken third.
If he was sent a third when he hit that double in the gap, his second double, would that
that next subsequent fly out have been a sack fly that scores, you know, the run that you needed there.
Right.
You don't know if it gets there because there's some arms in that outfield.
Well, and also, who knows if you get the same pitches or whatever if the guy's on third versus second.
So, you know, there's factors, outside factors.
But this game was just so winnable.
There's so many of those things that I think you're going to think of.
Well, we do have to give our king snake to someone.
And there's plenty of guys on the offense that deserve it.
but Gabriel Moreno is our Kingsnake for tonight's game.
Gabriel Moreno was huge with the 2 RBI.
He was 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored.
And honestly, it probably could have been Perdomo as well,
going 3 for 6 with a home run, 3 run scored and an RBI and a double.
Like there was plenty of good options.
It's just, again, it's too bad we couldn't give it
to the guy that gave us the game winning hit.
That's probably what is most disappointing here.
overall. But again, the offense was not to blame for this one. This one is on the pitching staff.
And we are going to talk about that on the other side of this break. Don't you guys go anywhere?
You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show. Well, I don't have my, I don't have my bottle of
Don Julio with me. I don't have my white gloves. So I couldn't touch it anyway. But let me tell you,
that bottle of Don Julio is absolutely a trophy. And every show on the PHNX network is going to be
fighting to own that bottle of Don Julio.
They say that we're just going to get to put it on like the set, but if Damon and I win
this trophy, there is no way that we're not going to guzzle its contents on this show live.
And that's because this wasn't meant to just sit around as some sort of decoration.
This bottle is iconic and it was meant to be raised.
Damon, if you wouldn't mind, bring this bad boy in here.
I'm not touching it.
You got the white gloves on.
This beautiful bottle is the trophy.
This is for legends on and off the field.
Look at that thing.
Look at it, glimmer.
Look at it shine.
It could be yours.
Or one of the other bottles they have because they have three different options during
World Cup season over there at Don Julio.
And again, you got a toast with the icon of celebration,
Don Julio, 1942 during the 2026 World Cup.
They got the original, which is the icon of celebrations.
That's their, their box.
that's like a normal size bottle for regular people.
That's the championship edition bottle.
That is the trophy.
And then they also have a mini for small but iconic moments.
Regardless of the bottle you choose,
this is the trophy that everyone can take home.
Take home a special edition of Don Julio,
1942 that honors the artistry of tequila making a symbol
as timeless and as the beautiful game itself and inspired,
as you could see by the World Cup trophy.
This is an amazing little thing that Don
Leo has going on. I probably need to own all three bottles, to be honest. I've seen all three bottles.
They're unbelievable. I mean, it's one of those things that like you'll look back on and be like,
imagine if I had that set, those bottles just sitting in my office. Just sitting in my bar. It's made
for those who move the moment forward like Damon and myself and turning every celebration into a legacy.
So be on a lookout for U.S. men's national team watch parties and Mexico watch parties this summer.
We'll have samples and prizes for those in attendance. And we'll be doing those all over the place
starting Friday, June 12th,
we'll be out at Philly's Scottsdale
for the U.S. men's national team,
and starting on Thursday, June 11th,
we'll be at Phillies on Warner
for the noon kickoff for Team Mexico.
So join us, Philly Scotsdale,
Phillies on Priests, Filles on Warner,

And of course, it doesn't matter
whether you're with us or you're at home,
whether you're at the World Cup
or you're hanging out with friends.
It doesn't matter.
Whether you're at your favorite spot
or you're just stocking up for home,
make it a Don Julio, 1942.
And also, Bet365 wants to help get down on the action, especially with live in-game betting.
Saw people live-in-game betting this game.
That one was a little wild.
It was going all over the place.
So I don't know how I would have felt about that.
But baseball is in full swing over at Bet-365.
And it's taking over because now is our time.
Your time is up all other sports.
Our time is now, at least until the World Cup gets here.
But for right now, the best thing about getting in on the Bet-365 offer during baseball season is that all new users have to do is sign up and make their first bet of $10.
and they will get $200 in bonus bets.
That's right.
That is their bet $10, get $200 in bonus bets deal.
Win or lose, it's a lot easier than hedging your bets emotionally sometimes.
You know what I mean?
But, of course, you also can get down on the early payout offer
because you are a winner, regardless of the outcome of a game,
if your team goes up by five runs.
And that didn't happen in this game, but it came very close to happening.
We would have loved to have the Mariners go up by five,
but still have the Diamondbacks win, because then people would have won and still won, right?
So it doesn't matter.
Whenever your team goes up by five runs at any point in the game,
they'll pay your bet out right then and there,
as well as mark all parlay selections as winners as well.
They can't stop bullpens from ruining your day,
but they can't stop them from ruining your bets.

Oh, boy.
it was not a good night for Zach Gallen, and it is unfortunate. I probably have been at times the
lone member of the Zach Gallen Support Club around here. A lot of that has been because I still believe
Zach Gallen is, you know, it is a guy that can be a good pitcher at a major league level. However,
analytics and looking at his fastball data would lead me to believe that that might be just
kind of a foolish hope at this point.
You know, the one thing about baseball to keep in mind is that sometimes
even the best in the game are only the best for a short period of time.
Great players are great because they do it consistently over a number of years.
And then baseball is filled with good players.
Good players who were good for a period of time,
but, you know, that time can come and go pretty quickly.
I'm not suggesting Zach Gallen's time as a major league player
or major league pitcher is completely up.
But I will say that, you know, his fastball data, his fastball metrics is trended in a direction
for the past three seasons that no longer makes me feel like it's going to bottom out,
which is something that I thought last year.
I thought maybe we had seen the worst of it last year and that a rebound was incoming.
Yeah.
You know, I think my thought was it was probably going to happen with another team.
And we were once again going to be left to kind of be kicking and screaming as to why a guy is so good elsewhere that could no longer be good here.
We've got a number of those guys.
It's understandable.
But there's still probably far more guys that have left this team and weren't any better.
You know, John Curtis right now, as much as I hate to admit it, is pitching in the Mexican League.
That's where John Curtis is at, right?
And that breaks my heart because you know John Curtis is always supposed to be there.
He's always supposed to be listening.
He's always supposed to be watching over us at all times and ready.
He's supposed to be ready at all times.
But the dream of him coming back to the Diamondback seems to be dead right now.
But Zach Gallen, again, he did not have a very good night tonight.
In fact, the very first batter that he faced in tonight's game,
he gave up a solo home run to J.P. Crawford, who terrorized Zach Gallen all night long.
Yet another home run off of him later in the game.
And again, it just kind of set the tone.
You had Julio Rodriguez hitting a very, very, very.
hard hit single as the second hit of the game. That was 109.2 miles per hour off of his bat.
And it just looked like it was already a disaster for Zach. Two batters into the game. He did settle in.
He settled in nicely. He got Naylor to ground into a double play, gets a Rosarina to ground out.
But and then gets a one, two, three inning in the second. So things feel good. But two outs,
bottom of the third, he walks J.P. Crawford to kind of avoid dealing.
with that again and Julio Rodriguez
hits a two-run home run
off of him, his 11th of the season
and that put the Mariners up by a score
of 3 to nothing. Then
Perdomo hits the solo home run
comes down, comes back out
for the fourth and once again
he just really struggles
up there against the Rose Arena
who eventually singles and then
steals second base. You got Luke Rally singling
and then you had
a fly ball that put runners on
the corners and again another ground
out, or another double play to end the inning.
This went on former Arizona Diamondback dominant can zone, right?
But it did really feel like everything that Zach Gallen, you know, had going positively at
times was due to being able to induce those ground balls and get out of those, you know,
kind of jams.
In the fifth inning, bottom of the fifth, he gives up a single, lead off single to Johnny
Pareta.
Then with one out, J.P. Crawford, once again, it's his second home run of the game.
game.
This one's a two run home run.
I don't know if I felt owned by a player the way I felt owned by J.P.
Crawford tonight in a really long time.
I didn't want them to pitch to them at all at all at any point during this game.
I don't know if like I might bring it back to a really dark spot here for a lot of people.
But like I don't know if I felt that way since Kyle Hagashioca hit a home run against the diamondbacks to end our 2024 season in front of my face.
That's that's truthfully how it felt watching J.P. Crawford make a diving play up the middle.
to, you know, with a guy on third base to stop that run from scoring in the, you know, in the extras.
Yeah.
I mean, talk about a guy just owning you in a game.
He could have had three home runs.
Yeah.
I keep saying it.
I kept saying it on the watch along all night, but like the guy hit a home run that went foul too.
I know.
And then he walked in a at bat that he was down, I think one two in that at bat.
He walks and then they hit a home run, Rayleigh the next.
stay B, right?
And there's always one guy that does this to us too, right?
And I'm not saying J.P. Crawford isn't a very good player already.
I mean, this was his eighth and ninth home run.
I'm just saying, like, overall, it's always a guy that's kind of like not the opposition's
main guy, you know?
It's always like a role player or somebody else that comes up and has literally a Hall of
Fame.
I told Noah that J.B. Crawford had two bombs against us and his jaw hit the floor.
He was like, J.P.
Crawford. I didn't know that that was, I didn't know he hit the ball over the fence ever.
After going two for four tonight with three RBI and two home runs, he's batting average is now
218 with a 741 OPS. And that's the man who bullied us around tonight, that man. At that point,
after he hit that home run, that's when the Mariners were up five to one. And I think that's
when we had seen enough of Zach Gallen. The following inning, Brandon Fott comes out. And
Brandon fought gets Randy a Rosemey to ground out and then he gives up as the game's tied.
The game just tied.
And we got to talk about this too, Damon.
Damon, again, banned from the watchalong area because of his bad mojo, juju, whatever he had going on, the magic, the black cloud that surrounded him.
Damon's banned.
Let's just say that I was walking over as Derek was calling me back.
This was a 5-5 ball game at this point.
I'm being called.
I'm being ushered back.
over onto the watch alone. I called for the righty. I said, can we get the righty? Can we get
Damon out of the pen? Let's bring him back. And I'm steps away from being back on set and a
ball is immediately flying over the fence. I mean, it's incredible. And then I was like,
he was just like, get out of here. He was like reaching for his headset to rejoin the watch along.
And as he does that, get out. Fott gives up a home run to Luke Rally.
His 12th of the year, fly ball. But that's, let's get back to Zach. Zach tonight again.
enough about Damon
I don't want to talk about Damon
at all in fact
I want to yell at Damon
I want to scream at Damon I want to throw
shade at Damon
maybe I'll throw shade at Damon
someone wanted us to throw shade
Zach tonight
four scenes stunk it up
did max out at 95.2
which wasn't bad
and his pitch velocity
was slightly up on his yearly average
yearly average so far
has been 93.4 with his fastball
it was 93.6 tonight
but still he threw it 54%
of the outing Damon
and for someone who's fast
has become as bad as
Zach's has become,
I don't quite understand
throwing it this much in an outing.
In fact, he only threw his knuckle curve
13 times tonight.
And his knuckle curve is arguably
one of his best pitches.
Maybe he didn't have a good feel for it tonight.
But he usually throws it much more than he did.
He also usually throws his fastball
much less than he did.
I've said it.
I only want to see Ryan Nelson
and maybe Eduardo Rodriguez at times surpassing 50% on fastball usage.
Not that what I say matters in any way, shape, or form,
and not that those men would ever listen to anything I had to say,
but I'm just, if we're talking preferences,
I would prefer to not see that.
It feels like that's usually a recipe for disaster.
Tonight it very much was for Zach.
He got three whiffs on his fastball, two whiffs on his changeup,
one whiff on the knuckle curve, and again, three home runs allowed for Zaz.
Zach in this one, just not a good outing, not a good outing for Zach.
We were talking at the beginning of the day about the Diamondbacks possibly matching their
franchise record for quality starts in May or surpassing it.
Well, in order to surpass it now, they will need that from Ryan Nelson and Merrill Kelly
in the final two games of this series.
Zach goes five innings, giving up eight hits with five earned runs.
He walked one, struck out two, and gave up three home runs.
It's never good when you gave up more home runs than strikeouts on a night.
No.
I think that's simple analysis.
That is,
that is pretty good.
I don't think that's a crazy take that I'm making there.
And that's why people tune into the PHNXB Back's Post.
Those are the hard hitting numbers that people are looking for when they.
And you don't love to see that.
Yeah,
Zach Allen might suck.
I think we might be at that point right now.
I mean, seriously.
And again,
it's,
I know fastball is not necessary for a pitcher to have success, right?
But a semblance of one.
It's hard not, yeah, it's hard not to.
It's hard not to establish a baseline with a four seam fastball or a cutter slash two seam or anything else without,
and then have your other breaking stuff come off of that, right?
I mean, when, when Zach was down in the zone tonight, stuff was working.
I think we have his pitch chart.
When it wasn't in the zone or what it was up, it wasn't good.
He was able to keep that change up down, but again, a couple of times where the changeup was up.
Fastball up all day, up all day.
And again, I know that that's kind of where you want to traditionally throw the forcing fastball, for sure.
But for Zach tonight, really didn't seem to be where he wanted to throw it.
And again, he threw it a lot.
He threw it, again, the majority of the time.
But the change up there, and honestly, some of these pitches, like the change up in the corner is exactly where Zach wanted to.
to throw it and that's where J.P. Crawford
hit the two-run bomb off of him, right?
So there was a couple of pitches hit tonight, including the game winner.
Now, you can't really blame the pitcher considering where they put it.
You just got to tip your cap to, you know, the hitter.
But, you know, his slider wasn't really sliding.
A couple of times that ended up right there in the middle of the zone.
And that also, that was also hit for a home run.
That was the bomb, I think, Julio hit off of him.
So I don't know, man.
I can't really explain it, but what I can say is that there needs to be, there's a sense of urgency now here for Zach.
A difficult decision is going to be made and it's going to be made here in what, Damon, 50 days, 55 days at the most?
Right?
In that time, in 55 days, I don't know how many more starts Zach's going to have.
10.
I'm pretty good at math.
So 10, 5, 5 pitchers, 10, I don't know.
They don't have a game every single day.
So maybe he'll get 5 in, maybe he'll have four more starts.
But it doesn't really feel like it is enough for him to prove that he is a better option as a starting pitcher in this rotation than the other four options the Diamondbacks currently have.
Ryan Nelson has been lighting it up.
His last start was the best of his season and quite possibly the best of his career.
And then on top of that, you have Eduardo Rodriguez.
and Michael Soroka pitching lights out all season long,
and Merrill Kelly has been also outstanding over his last few starts
after having a rough beginning, right?
Gallen looked like you really got things back on track,
but this type of outing does not help.
And I don't know how much of a factor contracts and other things are going to play into this,
but I do know that the Diamondbacks are kind of in an all-in situation this year
where I don't think they're going to let any of those factors impact their decision
as to what's the best product they put on the field, right?
So, you know, I don't know.
I will say that there's, there's just, it's unfortunate, right?
Like, it's the last thing I think any of us wanted to see as far as this starting
rotation is concerned is Zach Gallen now being a guy that we went from relying on
and counting on tremendously throughout his career as an Arizona Diamondback
to being the guy that we feel is the one.
pitcher in the rotation that is not allowing us to consistently have a chance to win when he's out there on the mound.
Yeah, it definitely is, it's sad. I've said that before, I think, during this season, but like, it really sucks to be like, this is the guy we thought was like the next up of like legendary pitchers of this organization.
And the start was so promising.
I mean, he's a Cy Young candidate. He's 26 years old, 27 years old.
he's shutting out the Cubs in Wrigley in a 1-0 game when the playoffs are on the line in late August.
And you're like, this is a superstar.
And at that point in time, you know, I think that we were all reserved to he was not going to be a Diamondback long term because, you know, the contract that he was going to command was going to be astronomical.
I know I was holding out hope, but that's just like the optimist in me of like, we're going to find the money.
and Derek, you were sitting there very often on this show and being like,
Zach Gallen's probably done with the Diamondbacks after his contract is expired
because we can't afford him.
And now it's like, what kind of contract is he going to get this next off the season?
Oh, God, yeah.
It's over.
Like, he could have signed in 23, Derek, with us, an extension that probably would have
seen him paid $30 million a year.
And I don't think that that's an exaggeration.
And now it's-
Would it have been a huge mistake?
Would he have still been gone down downhill like this?
Probably.
Probably, right?
Yeah, I mean, he's been on this team the whole time, so, and he's gone downhill.
You know, Saris appeared on the Stakes Territory podcast with our guys, Jesse and Jack,
and he had some wild things to suggest about why Zach Gallen has regressed in the way that he has.
I'm not going to get into accusations and things that they discussed.
Definitely check out that podcast, but I will say,
Gallen, again, you know, this might be a case where maybe this was going to happen regardless.
We talked about it a little bit on the watch along, too, if you're curious.
Yeah.
But there was also, Damon, just the idea in general that, you know,
Galen to me seems like a guy that the mental side of things impacts his performance more than other pitchers, right?
Yeah.
We've seen like the way that like when his defense doesn't pick him up on a play.
it seems to capitulate into a horrible ending.
And you even see it in his body language, right?
Like it's weird, and I'm not trying to say like it's immature or anything like that,
but you see like his shoulders kind of droop.
You kind of, you just see him do things that pitchers don't technically do.
You know, like a lot of pitchers just kind of, that run gets through or whatever,
and they just, okay, on to the next one.
You know what I mean?
You can see in his body language that Zach is disappointed.
And then, like you said, it leads to a terrible inning taking place, right?
I will say that the contract and other things that have happened in his life could weigh on him and could be factors into why.
Again, he is once again in a contract year where he's trying to play for that contract.
And as we saw last year, he had his worst season with the Diamondbacks when he was playing for that contract.
And here once again, on a one-year deal, he's pitching for that contract.
A lot of times that drives a guy, but you never know.
Maybe it could be something that's hurting him.
And it's possible that he goes and signs a two, three-year deal with the team in the off-season for pretty modest money.
Yeah.
And they end up getting the best out of Zach Gallen again because he's more comfortable.
And all of a sudden, you know, he's feeling like more of like an underdog status rather than, oh, my God, the pressure is on me to be the ace of this team.
Right, right.
Which, I mean, I'm not saying that that's what's happening.
But it's just such a stark fall off of what he used to be that it's like we're trying.
trying to just sit up here and put our tinfoil hats on and be like, well, what is it?
What is happening?
Because he's 30 years old and he should hypothetically, we said this on the watch long as well,
be in the prime of his career right now.
Hypothetically, based off of his age and, you know, like innings pitched in Major League Baseball,
you'd be thinking that he would be a potential Cy Young candidate at this time in his career.
Like this would be, he'd be giving you prime Zach Gallen.
And yet it looks like he's like a 37-year-old up there.
Right with the way he's he's pitching like the regression that we've seen.
Yeah.
It's pretty stark.
I do think that like he's, I mean, this is, you know, I said like I thought he's going to be like a legendary pitcher.
Yeah.
I think Gilbert is right.
Like I think Gowan is kind of in that like Dan Herron tier maybe like right below.
Yeah.
And I do think that the run in 23 might bump him up a little bit from that.
But I think like it he's he's not in the, the true legends tier of DBA.
pitchers.
No.
And like he, I thought if you put a gun to my head, you know, a few years back, I would have
been like, there's no question about it.
He's going to be.
I've always said that Zach gets the credit or gets the like gets that acknowledgement
that Merrill should get, you know.
I think Merrill was maybe better on that run.
Yeah.
And not only was Merrill better on that run, but Merrill just in general, the connection to
the valley in Arizona.
And in fact, Merrill, I believe, passed Kurt Schilling for strikeouts, right?
like Merrill's like third on the list in strikeouts behind like Randy Johnson Brandon Webb so
I think I think Gallin's fourth behind him now I think they both yeah no and Gallin's up there
I mean Gallons Gallons got a lot of accolades like I think I saw that they they became third and fourth
pitchers to reach a thousand innings pitched for the Diamondbacks or something like that that happened
very recently as well so I mean they're up there with all the statistics and like Zach Gallen
will be remembered very fondly for good reason but the end to this gallon run has
just been, it's been brutal, man.
Yeah, especially as a fan who likes Zach Gowan and, like,
used to, like, be, like, pumped up for Gallon's, Gallon Day, Gallantines Day.
Yeah, Galentine's Day, baby.
It's Galentine's day, and it's fought Tuesday, and now both those guys stink.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And they're gone, and I don't want to see them.
Brandon fought at the very least, I still, I still have hope for Brandon fought.
I think that this season has been very difficult on him.
I think that there's going to be a lot of growing.
that he has to do.
But I think he could come out on the other side of this as, again,
just another starter in their rotation that, you know,
it could be better than he has been in the past.
However, you know, if he's not,
the Diamondbacks extended him, you know,
and then that deal starts looking pretty bad overall,
even though it's not for a ton of money and it's for, you know,
pretty significant amount of team.
It could be, it could be,
especially towards the later years as far as that is concerned.
but it's crazy to think that Damon Zach Gallen was our opening day starter this season.
I mean, every season.
Like four in a row, no?
Yeah.
I mean, I know it doesn't matter overall.
And in the grand scheme of things, we're going to, you know, we're at this point of the season.
So the very least we should be thankful that the rest of our starting rotation has been delivering in a way that Zach hasn't.
But again, there's talk in the chat about trading him, about what we do with him.
I don't even know.
honestly I don't know at this point and I mean like what could you even get for who wants him that's what we were talking about like we were so we were discussing on the watch along with gallon what's you know what's the what's the team archetype that would want Zach Gallen because it's got to be a team that it clearly thinks that there's more juice there like they're that he's a guy that has something in the tank yeah and that you know what the dionbacks have gotten out of him is the last couple of seasons is is not who he really is he's more
you know, akin to the pitcher we've seen in the past.
And I mean, but that doesn't scream team that's rebuilding.
That doesn't scream team that's trying to shed salary.
That's a team that's trying to win.
And then if you're trying to win, how bad does your situation have to be
where the team that's trying to get rid of them who also, you know,
every team could use pitching, we could use pitching.
We know that.
The team that's trying to get rid of them, like they're like, oh, he's hurting us.
But this other team that is trying to pick him up is like, oh, we'll take him.
That's going to help this team.
Mighty Schumann is 100%.
If you went to the Brewers,
send him to the best picture in freaking baseball.
Yeah, 100%.
The Brewers could fix Zach Allen.
There is no question about that.
Yeah.
I don't want to trade.
Don't train to the Brewers.
I said athletics.
I said athletics.
Yeah.
Like, I think it's a team that needs like a starting pitcher
that they think can help them win games through the regular season
and get to the postseason.
By low?
Seawalk.
Maybe Seawalk puts in a good word.
word for him or maybe spots with yeah i was gonna say maybe we maybe we get him to
you guys totally get zach and you know what i'd be willing to go to arizona if you wanted me to
just saying um bullpen tonight brandon fought again wasn't very good uh you did give up that solo
home run but he also gave the diamond back he was okay inning in two thirds that that was his only
blemish how about the sweepers there that we're we're no the curve ball it was the curve ball it was
disgusting tonight from Brandon.
Disgusting.
I was thinking of
Kirby sweepers for a second.
It was also gross.
But yeah,
there were some gross pitches
thrown tonight.
Fought had some nasty
curveballs going,
especially after give up that.
Three Ks tonight
in an inning and two-thirds pitch,
but again,
gave up that one earn run.
And then honestly,
like the rest of the bullpen
was fine.
The Wysica came in,
gave him a great eighth inning
with just one strikeout,
one inning pitch.
Brandon Garcia came in
the ninth and held the game scoreless and sent it to extra innings.
Things got, I'm not going to say shaky, but he gave up a hit.
And, you know, again, the bullpen wasn't perfect, but still, one run allowed until extra
inings.
And then Juan Murillo comes in.
Juan was fine.
I don't blame Juan.
I didn't love the game plan.
I know that, I know that your guy, Josh Naylor, has been doing good lately.
He's been pretty hot lately, but he wasn't hot in this game.
No.
Right?
And instead...
Well, he did hit one off the wall.
He did hit one off the wall.
You're right.
But I'm just saying overall, they opt to walk Naler after getting one out, right?
They get, uh, excuse me.
No, yeah, they get one out.
Um, and then they pitch to Randy a Rose Arena.
And I just didn't love that.
I didn't love the idea of setting up the double play for essentially the Mariners best
statistical hitter right now. Randy Orozarena was hitting 298 or 297 when he came up to bat,
Damon. And again, it's just not the guy. I feel like you walk to get to. It's the guy you walk to
put on base. And then you hit the Robles who came in for rally earlier in the game. Right? I mean,
yeah, I mean, you don't want to put the, you don't want to put the winning run 90 feet away. So like,
I don't know. No, well, I'm not talking about, yeah. I'm not talking about walking Naylor. I'm talking about,
pitching to Nailer, whatever happens there happens.
I'm not going to say I can know the outcome of that,
but just saying if he gets Nailer out and then he walks a Roserina
instead of walking Nailer to pitch to a Roserina,
I feel like maybe this goes differently,
but I'm also just backseat driving right now.
For sure.
And I'm torn honestly on what I think they should have done there
because I think in the moment,
it's not like we didn't say that.
We were immediately like, are you sure you want to go after a Roserena here?
So it's not like this is, we're backseat driving in that regard.
Right.
But it's a difficult situation.
Do you pitch to Josh Naylor who's probably recently been their hottest hitter?
And it's a lefty on righty matchup from a batter on pitcher standpoint.
Yeah, that's a good point.
And that was clearly something that they were trying to attack as well was get the righty on righty.
Right.
And so from that standpoint, I get it.
But again, this is a guy that has been the best offensive player on the team all season long.
I don't know.
I don't know what they should have done, truthfully.
I mean, I'm doing, I'm doing this for a Rosarina because he hit a Morillo pitch.
True.
That was this far out of the strike zone.
He poked it.
He poked his bat out.
Oh, Damon found the most disgusting picture of it.
Where he's practically prone onto the ground.
He's practically diving onto the floor while he's hitting the pitch.
It sucks.
Yeah.
And so in that circumstance, it's like maybe that's just that maybe that's why you don't pitch to
that guy, but because he's just making things happen.
Yeah.
But also you kind of tip your cap, like you said, and you think that most of the time,
if a ball gets hit like that, you're going to get an out of it most of the time.
Yeah.
But in that circumstance, you did not.
You just didn't.
It sucks.
It sucks that it happened and it sucks the Diamondbacks lose this one.
But again, I like our guy, Zach's attitude in here.
He said, you know, the guy's fought.
The boys fought hard tonight.
Six games over.
Six games over still.
And we still got two more.
this series.
Yeah.
We just need to start playing the best baseball that we can play.
Because after this series against a good Mariners team, we have a pretty great Dodgers
team that's coming to town for not just three games, but four games, Damon.
And I don't.
Cheats.
I don't love what could happen, you know, after these next seven games.
We need Catelle.
If Catelle's up there and he's mashing, who beats us?
Yeah.
I seriously feel like we're unstoppable if Cattel is hitting at his peak level.
And I don't know if that's like, that's just, you know, like the crazy fan in me.
But like when he won NLCS MVP, he's just hitting the cover off the baseball and we're winning games at the highest level.
And I feel like tonight, you know, it's easy to boil down.
But if Ketel gets one hit, two hits, we win this game.
And, you know, I think if, you know, the next couple games in this series, the Dodgers series,
if we can get him playing the level that he's been playing against the Rockies and the Giants.
And again, I know that against the Rockies and the Giants.
So that does bear noting.
But like if we can get him swinging like that, we're one of the best teams in baseball.
And I think we're really tough to beat.
Diamondback dropped to two and three in extra innings games this year.
And they are now 11 and 9 in one run games.
11 and 9.
They have played 20 both of these teams.
Mariners and a Diamondbacks both lead Major League Baseball and one-run games played.
They both play 20 one-run games now.
It's wild.
Interesting.
Yeah.
I mean, I think it goes, that's got to be pitching, right?
Yeah.
Correlation.
Yeah, definitely, definitely, because you're not having these wild, you know,
innings run out of control.
Even if you lose a game, your bullpen's able to keep it close.
A lot less 11, 10 games than 2-1 games.
Right, right.
Absolutely.
So let's take a quick break.
and on the other side of this break,
we're going to take a look at the disgusting numbers from this game.
And then after that, Damon and I are going to give you our thoughts on this initial offer from MLB
to get a new salary cap and salary floor implemented in baseball.
We're going to do all of that on the other side of this break.
Don't you go anywhere?
You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show.
Of course, you've got to do your research if you are ever involved in an accident or serious injury

to prevail in a courtroom in front of a jury, and they know what needs to be done to win on their
client's behalf. Now, they can't make you any kind of promise as far as the outcome of your case,
but they can make a few promises to you as their client. You can cancel your fee agreement with them
at any time for any reason. You have the right to trust that as your lawyers, they will tell you
both the strengths and weaknesses of your claim so that you can make informed decisions, and that you may

necessary in the Diamondbacks offense.

And Damon, we got ourselves some ugly numbers from tonight's game that I don't really want to look at,
but let's do so anyway, thanks to our friends over there at 1AZ Credit Union.
Love them for this.
Runs tonight, the Diamondbacks, of course, get outscored 6 to 7.
the Mariners had six extra base hits.
A lot of home runs, by the way.
Four of those extra base hits were home runs.
The Diamondbacks had...
Handed them out like candy.
Just the one, right?
Just the one home run for us.
Runners in scoring position, this one,
this will make you throw up in your mouth just a little bit.
It's really bad.
Two for six on the Mariners side.
That's a normal day for a normal average baseball team.
That's what they're supposed to do.
Oh, interesting.
Two for six.
Yeah, two for six.
Yeah.
Three for 17.
Air horn me.
Can you, can you, can you, I need some sort.
Let's do that guy.
Three Damon for 17.
That's better.
Yeah, fa is more appropriate.
176 batting average.
17 scoring opportunities with runners and scoring position.
A lot of those came from those bases loaded situations where they had one out or less.
but man three for 17
three for 17
you hate it you hate to see it that's why
the rest of the podcast just be us
just back and forth looking at each other and just going
three for 17
three for 17 but it's three for 17
but it's three for 17 but look at mighty schumann says
we would have won with four with 17
four for 17 we win the baseball game
we win the goddamn baseball game if we're four for 17
three for 17
are you kidding me
Are you kidding me?
Three for 17.
Damon, myself, and Noah, who is a complete weirdo, could have scored more than three for 17.
He is a weirdo.
He's such a weirdo.
Three for 17.
Three for 17.
I don't even understand that.
I mean, I do because I watched it.
My eyes watched it.
I watched it.
You watched it.
We all watched it.
We were horrified together as a family.
Over the rest of the stats.
I'm going to keep screaming into this microphone sideways
because I just can't believe it.
Three for 17.
And yes, see, piece of Yoshi says that's a guy
that was talking about poop all night.
That's a guy that probably would have done better than three for 17.
I don't know, man.
I mean, I know it's hard to hit a baseball.
I know it's easier said than done.
Austin 317.
Oh, Austin 317 means I just struck out.
My ass just struck out is what Austin 317 means.
My God.
Damon hit me with the Faw button again
I just need to
God three for 17
3 for 17
Hard hit percentage
We need a flush it button
I'm gonna I'm gonna work on that
I need a flush it button
So I can flush it button
So I could flush the game down the toilet
After on post game shows like Torrey
And then it's just the sound of like slices
Knicked up
Do you want to talk about the rest of the stats
The rest of the numbers?
I don't really want to but let's take a look at this
I mean there's one other thing I think
that bears noting here.
It's the ABS challenges.
No ABS challenges.
Right?
How many times were we screaming that that was a, that was a ball of?
Hey, challenge that one, Tommy Troy.
It's three inches above the zone.
Doesn't challenge it.
But hey, at least we get to bring these into tomorrow, right, Derek?
Yeah, because that's what happens is your extra challenges get to carry over.
By the time the end of the week comes around, we're going to have 15 goddamn challenges.
No, that's not how it works, Damon.
You get two.
And if you blow both of them, as the Mariners did,
in the sixth inning, which was delightful to watch.
I enjoyed that.
That was fun.
And then on top of that, the home plate umpire was just giving it to him all night long.
Yeah, after that he was like, he was like, they just had to take it.
Oh, you guys use your challenges?
Oh, that's too bad.
Get ready for some awful calls that you won't have anything to deal with.
When it comes to challenges, the Diamondbacks are one of these least challenging team in all the baseball.
In fact, they're in the bottom four for challenges for batting.
challenges while batting, and then challenges while fielding,
they are tied with the Dodgers and the Blue Jays for one, two, three, four, five,
seventh least used challenges.
The team with the seventh least, they've used 51 fielding challenges this season.
The team with the most is the Miami Marlins,
who have used 101 fielding challenges this year.
Double.
Diamondbacks have called, have,
challenge 40 calls while batting the Minnesota twins of challenge 78.
I just think we're at the point where it's just clear Gabby's not very good at it.
Well, and that's what it is.
If that's what it is, then that's what's causing them to pull back on usage of it.
But they're not bad at winning.
When it comes to fielding teams winning, the Diamondbacks are one of the best.
They have a 65% win percentage, which is tied for sixth most, six best winning
percentage. But these other teams are using it far more. That's really what it comes down to. The
Diamondbacks aren't using it enough. But in fact, a few of these teams, though, they're also
down there as well. So it would appear that the teams that use it less use it more successfully,
but also, as Damon said, probably walk away from a lot of baseball games with those challenges
still in their pocket. So I don't know. Doesn't help you win baseball games when you go
0 for O and you had a chance to
to maybe challenge a few of those calls and perhaps
maybe turn some things around.
We're going to take a quick break. I'm done with this game.
Damon, we do need that flush button. You're right. This would be a
perfect time to say flush it, but if you wouldn't mind,
give me one more fa before we get out here?
Yeah, that one's done. We're going with this game. We're going to talk
about the initial offer from Major League
Baseball to implement a salary cap and a salary floor.

And Zach Gonzalez says, where are we meeting before?
That's a great question.
We might have to figure out a meeting place.
Typically, we're just meeting in the bar-ass lounge because we can get there as soon as gates open.
And it's kind of an open seating situation where we can mingle about and talk to each other in chat.
But maybe we do need to find ourselves a place to get together and meet up beforehand.
Damon and I are going to be doing a 12 p.m. show that day.
Damon's got to do a little Wildcats thing that he does after that.
But then we'll be heading over to the ballpark.
So hopefully we can meet up with you guys.
but I did want to talk just real briefly about the news, I guess,
that MLB has actually started their negotiations.
We know that they kicked off the CBA negotiations overall here.
And when they do that, it kind of means like the pleasantries.
You know, it's like that initial cordial dance.
I don't know if you've ever seen, like, it's always sunny in Philadelphia
where they play a very auspicious board game,
but it's like the Maori war dance that starts.
So like, again, it was just the two sides, huh?
Electric.
It's electric.
And it's like the way that the two sides get started on positioning themselves
with no actual real work being done or no offers being made.
But was surprised that here we get MLB proposing an actual salary cap and salary floor
on day one, essentially, of their negotiations.
This comes from a number of sources the other day, but MLB proposed a hard salary cap to union officials.
This was yesterday on Thursday as part of the CBA.
Sources tell ESPN that the salary floor for teams beginning in 2027 would be set at $171.2 million,
which includes player benefits with the ceiling at $245.3 miles per hour, or miles per hour, million dollars,
$245.3 miles a million million dollars.
I'm having trouble with words because it's late.
Damon.
Derek.
This puts us right exactly where we want to be as a franchise.
Am I wrong?
I think the diamond backs as far as spending is concerned.
We're like right under like four teams under the proposed salary cap with plenty of teams underneath us as far as the floor is concerned.
I mean, this, this is not.
the deal that's going to get it done. There's going to be far more negotiations and far more changes
to this offer before we finally reach a new CBA. But it really does feel like this is
starting off at a good place as far as what we want to see baseball do with this CBA.
Yeah, I think we talk a lot on this show about money, right? And the rules of baseball. And I think
it makes a lot of sense when you consider the team that we cover in comparison to
the division that we play in.
Yeah.
Like there's kind of an interest we have.
Yeah, for sure.
And it takes away one of the main avenues that you have to make playoffs almost automatically
because you have one team that just spends so dramatically more than every other team in the division.
Even the Padres spend a lot and more than the diamondbacks do.
And so, yeah, it's the money thing is always an issue with us.
But you know what the number one thing that like we always talk about when it, when it comes to the money
Derek is the Diamondbacks are clearly trying.
This is not a team that is folding its hands in its lap and saying,
well, I guess we'll never be able to compete with the Dodgers.
So why should we even try?
Why don't we just bottom out, shed salary, try to sell some tickets?
And then that's what we do.
Like a lot of teams in baseball do, right?
Like that's not, that is not a thing that is, you know, only,
you know, consistent with one team, not, you know, this happens frequently.
The Diamondbacks are not in that realm right now.
They are putting a lot of their revenue back into the team to pay for more payroll.
And so I think that that needs to be rewarded.
That's, this is a team that's trying to win.
And yes, we're in between that 171,4 and that 245 ceiling.
It fits us perfectly.
But like, we're doing it with a $25 million RSN deal.
Yeah.
While the Dodgers have the biggest television rights deal in all professional.
sports. And that's something that would change with this supposed change to the CBA is that there
would be a shared pool of revenue for TV deals. And you wouldn't have these teams like the Yankees
and the Dodgers getting this significant amount of revenue solely off of their
exclusive TV deals that they have. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And this, you know what this doesn't
really impact that I've seen so far at least? Deferred payments. Which is, which is like the Dodgers,
that's, that's what's crazy. Okay. That's what they're, they're still getting away with paying O Tani two million
And they're going to.
They're going to.
That's not going to change with any of these salary caps.
That's the reason why what the Dodgers have set up still is.
That's why I don't want to hear their.
I just don't want to hear their tears when all of a sudden they're like,
we're going to cut back on what the payroll is.
And then these guys are paying the best player that is maybe ever walk the face of
the earth $2 million a year to play for their franchise.
And then they're going to be like the MLB is out to get the Dodgers and trying to ruin
our dynasty.
Screw you guys.
You guys are trying to circumvent the rules left and right.
And you're successfully doing it to be fair.
And you're not even circumventing the rules.
You're blatantly spitting in the rules faces and telling the rules, fuck off.
We're going to do what we want.
But it's an aberration to the game of itself.
And it's fine.
Like you want to win.
That's fine.
But like this is what needs to happen for major league baseball in order to be successful
down the road.
Because people will lose interest in the Dodgers show every single goddamn year.
It's not fun to watch.
No one wants to see the villains who are clearly the villains win all the time with the best team.
First of all, I want to give a shout out to the people in the chat that knew the name of that game from Mottes Sondi in Philadelphia was called Chardy McDenness.
Shout out to you guys.
You guys are the real MVP's and I love you all.
Damon, the Dodgers don't even, like if you were talking about 2026 payroll deductions and which teams would be over the proposed ceiling, the Dodgers aren't even the highest team.
No, the Mets are at 88 million over.
million over.
And then you got the Dodgers at 55 million over, Yankees at 46 million over,
Toronto and Philly at 36 million over, and Atlanta at 21 million over.
Then you have this huge list of teams that are all below the proposed floor.
It is nuts.
Miami, $92 million below the proposed floor.
Cleveland, who's winning?
The Marlins are the poster child of horrific franchise.
Tampa Bay, these guys...
But at least the race try.
Like, they know what they are.
They know that they're never going to be the team that pays people.
The Marlins straight up win World Series and say,
buy everybody who helped us win the World Series,
because we're not paying you a dime.
Tampa Bay did that.
Just getting to the World Series and not winning it.
At least the Marlins won the damn thing twice.
They kept the Longoria.
I'm just saying, right?
Am I right?
Like, the Marlins are the ones that created that blueprint in a way.
And I'm sure there's some other team before that I'm too old or young to remember.
But they're still doing it.
But yeah, no.
But the Marlins, they were that team.
97, right?
What was the other year they won?
2003, I think.
Yeah, yeah.
And it's like these teams, they don't, they, they, they, what they refuse to do is they
refuse to pay one guy, you know, $20 million more than another guy, just because he
hits the ball four percent more than this guy does, right?
Because that's what we're doing here.
We're going out of a guy that hits 240 versus a guy hit 280.
That's four percent more of the time.
he hits the ball. Not a lot. And if you're money balling stuff and you're talking about on base
percentages and other things, then there's a good chance that you always feel like moving on
from these high-priced stars and going to the next young, exciting athlete will work for your franchise.
It doesn't always for the Marlins, as they've been in a rut of sucking for quite a while now,
but it did work there for a decent amount of time over a six-year stretch, right? And they never really
had to, they never really had to commit big contracts to any of those guys. But when you talk about
what these other teams are doing.
You know, the White Sox,
they're a young, exciting team.
They went out spent money on Murakami
who got injured today in the third inning of their game.
Think about what they,
if they added $80 million in salary,
how much that would change their team.
Yeah.
That's what we're talking about here.
But more importantly.
The raise, $68 million.
They're the best team in baseball right now.
Damon, here's what nobody talks about
with the floor enough.
And we have discussed on this show quite a bit.
But it's the fact that if these teams are forced to spend this money,
then they have to sign the players that the,
the Mets, the Dodgers, the Yankees, the Toronto, Blue Jays, the Phillies, and the Braves are all signing.
They have to sign those guys.
And that keeps those teams from being so good.
And it makes all the teams in baseball closer as far as parity is concerned.
That is the reason why the proposed floor is so important.
And there are so few of teams that are actually operating with the guidelines of this proposed
salary cap and salary floor.
That's another thing.
It's less than half of the teams are currently in that range right now.
You know what I was thinking of when I was looking at this.
list of teams though, Derek.
Imagine being the San Francisco Giants and you're not on the teams of below and
you're not on the teams of above, but you clearly have spent enough money where baseball
is fine with what you've spent, but your team absolutely fucking sucks.
Sucks.
But you've spent the requisite dollars, but your team sucks.
These other teams here, like, as you talk about the white socks, the race, the Cardinals,
the A's, the Brewers.
the Reds, the Mariners, those are all teams that need to add salary to their team that all are
already pretty good teams.
Yes.
If they added salary, how much better could they truly be?
And those are all truly like, you know, night and day differences.
Like the Mariners only need nine, whereas the White Sox need 80.
So it's a big discrepancy.
But it just feels like this is what baseball needs to make a competitive balance happen.
It would create an equal revenue stream from the, you know, from the, the, the, the, the, the, the,
the broadcasting right side of things similar to the NBA to the NFL where it's a national
deal it gets you know just divvied up correctly and equally to everybody so it's an equal playing
field and yeah i mean there's still a plenty of margin here derrick of 74 million dollars 73
million dollars that a team can go and overspend versus another team that's a lot that's a lot
of money and so like if you want to be on the very bottom of that floor be my guess but
this is definitely good for baseball.
And I would argue it's good for the player as well.
I know that they don't want to hear that this salary cap is something that needs to happen.
But number one, for the game to grow, for salaries to grow, the game needs to grow.
For the game to grow, this needs to happen.
That's number one.
Number two, how about we stop looking out for the one percenter in Major League Baseball
and start looking out for the guy who's slummeted it up in high A and like has to
meet six years of arbitration before he's eligible to sign a freaking free agent deal.
And it's like, this is a ridiculous system.
How about the guy that is a young player that's brought, you know, success to his team and
deserves like an extension, but they're not going to do it because that that franchise
doesn't really extend players and they don't really sign guys to long-term deals and blah,
blah, blah, blah as a philosophy, right?
Well, those teams are now going to spend money.
And I don't understand this notion that like this is this this cap or plus floor.
I think that we always need to say cap plus floor because that is such a huge aspect of this.
Clearly that has more of an effect.
If you look at the teams that are on this list, there's twice as many that need to up their spending.
Yeah.
That is more money being put into the players pockets.
Right.
It's so while yes, it sounds scary, a cap.
Ooh.
Yeah.
They're going to cap the money.
That does not mean that players are in a whole going to be making less money.
No.
That just means that maybe there's not going to be these like astronomical $70 million per year contracts they're going around.
How about it means there's not going to be super teams that keep getting together.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
But there's money.
There's plenty of money for everybody in this scenario.
I just think it's ridiculous that there's going to be actual pushback against this when it just feels so obvious that this is what baseball needs.
I think this is going to happen.
I really do.
I think that it's going to be adjusted.
I don't think that they will land at $245.3 million for a ceiling,
but I do think that it will be less than $300 million.
And then as far as the floor is concerned, I don't give a damn.
Make the floor that.
Yeah.
Make it that.
Maybe make it a little bit lower.
$165 million.
Whatever.
It doesn't need to change much from that.
You know, make it to where maybe you get the Mariners are not,
million below, Baltimore, which is crazy considering their roster.
And Baltimore's four million below.
So maybe make it $13 million less so that those two teams slide in.
And then, you know, you had Kansas City at currently $25 million below the proposed floor.
That's a pretty decent amount below that needs to step up their spending.
And then everybody below that, it's pathetic and all of them need to spend.
Miami's, again, Miami's payroll, Miami, Miami, Cleveland, White Sox, Washington at
the athletics in St. Louis.
All of their payrolls are like what the Diamondback,
or not Diamondbacks,
what the Dodgers are paying total in payroll and penalties
for Kyle Tucker to be on their team.
Yeah.
That's crazy that one team is paying as much for one single player
as several teams are paying their entire roster.
I think you could, those teams could add Otani to their payrolls
and they'd still be like right at the cusp of like,
like the Marlins would need to add more money.
I'm not even talking to deferred payments.
I'm talking 70 million.
The Marlins would still need to add money
if they added Showhay's real contract to their team.
They would still need to add $22 million to their payroll.
That's wild to think about it.
No, that's totally wild.
But there's no money if they add a salary cap for our players.
Get out of here.
Whatever.
Bryce Harper just wants to be a tough guy and getting Rob Banfford's face like that.
Like that moves anybody.
I know.
I could get in Rob Manfred's face, buddy.
He's a short old man.
Rob Manfred is not moved by you or your threats either.
That's the other thing.
Also, like kind of stood on business.
He did stand on business.
Like they said that he didn't back down too, which I kind of, I think, is hilarious.
What's you going to do, Bryce?
Imagine being one of the other players in there where you were just witnessing that.
I'd be laughing.
Would you not be laughing?
Yeah.
I got to go to the training room.
I can't be in here for this.
I got to get in the tub.
I got to get in the tub.
I got to get to.
You can't look away either.
Well, we thank you guys.

Oh.
