PHNX Arizona Diamondbacks Podcast - POSTGAME: D-backs Suffer CRUSHING Loss to Marlins & Miss Chance to Gain Ground in NL Wild Card Race

Episode Date: September 16, 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered what may be the most heartbreaking loss of the season, falling 4-2 to the Miami Marlins on a night where EVERY other team in the NL Wild Card race also lost. Somehow,... the D-backs managed to turn a massive opportunity to gain ground into one of the most frustrating losses imaginable. We break down how Arizona lost this game, including an offense that left 15 men on base, the brutal missed opportunities throughout the night, and the controversial play at the plate that kept Geraldo Perdomo from scoring what could have been the game-winning run. With the postseason race tightening, we also discuss why the finale against Miami has become a must-win game for the D-backs. Plus, we look ahead to the Arizona Fall League and reveal which D-backs prospects could be making their way to Arizona later this year.BECOME A DIEHARD: gophnx.com/join JOIN THE SUPPORTERS CLUB ➡️ https://tinyurl.com/yc6km2r4An ALLCITY Network ProductionSUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: https://bit.ly/phnx_youtubeALL THINGS PHNX: http://linktr.ee/phnxsports MERCH https://store.allcitynetwork.com/collections/phnx-lockerALLCITY Network, Inc. aka PHNX and PHNX Sports is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the City of PhoenixPHNX Events: Get your tickets to PHNX events and takeovers here: https://gophnx.com/events/ALLCITY — including us here at PHNX — is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for an exciting three-year partnership. Starting point is 00:00:00 Are you kidding me? No, seriously, are you kidding me? Oh my God, I can't believe we lost. Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks postgame show. Live! Live! We're live and I hate it and I hate everything. We are live from Studio K, presented by Circle K.
Starting point is 00:00:31 I simply cannot believe what we witnessed here tonight. Ladies and gentlemen, the Diamondbacks lost an 11 inning game tonight to the Miami Marlins by a score of 4 to 2, a game where they scored in the first inning, which they rarely do these days, and somehow went nine whole innings without being able to score. Another run. Squandering opportunity after opportunity. Damon, make them listen to that music. Let it play out.
Starting point is 00:00:58 No, I want it. I want you to listen to this whole song and let it sink in about how miserable tonight's loss truly was, and what a huge missed opportunity this was for this. Diamondbacks considering that every other team in the National League Wildcard Race lost. My name is Derek Montia. I'm occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX, but I don't even want to have anything to do sports or this place or that team or anything right now. A person joining me also feels similar after traveling basically the entire state to cover sports. And now all he wanted to do was get together with his buddy Derek, watch the diamond.
Starting point is 00:01:44 I'm back to win a baseball game, have a few laughs, have some giggles, and talk about how back we were. And you robbed him of that. You robbed this man of that, and he deserves better. I'm not okay. It is Damon Farrell on the ones and twos. I am not okay. I know you're less okay than I am. And I had to witness this game in person.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Man. Oh. I don't know. Sometimes watching it through in-play runs and out on MLB.com is way easier than having to stomach what we saw tonight in person. I apologize to any of you that were present for this game tonight. You don't deserve that and neither do we. But this is the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast. We are brought to you by our friends at Game Time. Go download the Game Time app right now. Use our code of PHNX when you sign up and create an account and you will get $20 off your first
Starting point is 00:02:33 purchase terms to apply. Yeah. Diamondbacks lose 4 to 2 in the 11th inning. They dropped to 80 and 72. they had a chance to make it to 81 wins and ensure that they would at least have a winning record this season, which I'm now completely in doubt of that happening. But the Diamondbacks left a lot of runners on base tonight. They left a lot of runners on base. There's no way to get around the huge missed opportunity. In fact, if you were watching this game,
Starting point is 00:03:05 you probably are as confused as I am about how the Diamondbacks lost it. I mean, they honestly dominated the Marlins, or it seemed like they dominated the Marlins for the entirety of this game, even when we moved into extra innings. But every time they had an opportunity to get ahead after this game was tied at one and take a lead, they squandered it, they blew it, they wasted it. Every other way you could describe it, they did that. They did that.
Starting point is 00:03:35 One for 13 tonight with runners in scoring position, 15 runners left on base. on a day where they scored one single goddamn run. And more importantly, they lose on a day where every other team in the National League wildcard race lost, a chance where they could have made ground on everybody. The Cubs, the Phillies, we've told you, they're not going anywhere, right? Wink. They have a tough schedule ahead.
Starting point is 00:04:03 And more importantly, the Diamondbacks have a series with the Padres, which, I mean, as long as they keep it close, right, they could still turn things around. However, expecting this team to sweep that Padres team in the final series of the season is as ridiculous as me saying that they're going to catch the Dodgers for the division right now. There's no way you can expect to go into San Diego in the final series of the year and sweep that team.
Starting point is 00:04:31 But kudos to the Rockies for understanding the assignment and getting the job done by beating them. where's my nips hurt? We need our friend my nips hurt from the nationals fan base here so we can congratulate them on beating the Phillies. We thank some of our biggest, our biggest ops for coming in here and helping us when we needed it the most. But you know who couldn't help us? We couldn't help ourselves. We couldn't take advantage of this situation. We couldn't improve our position by winning a very winnable game. And they end up losing by a score of four. to two in 11 innings.
Starting point is 00:05:09 After scoring early in the first, again, a rarity for this team lately, the D-BAC's offense could not get a big hit in any way, shape, or form against this Marlins bullpen. Junk pitch three innings. The Diamondbacks offense was somewhat effective against him, even though they couldn't convert a couple of running, uh, runners and scoring opportunity there in the second and third inning while he was still in. But once the Marlins bullpen came in, it was like this diamond.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Diamondbacks offense couldn't do anything against them. Literally couldn't do anything against them. And again, in the first inning with two outs, Gabriel Moreno hit his 14th home run of the season to give the Diamondbacks a one-nothing lead. It went 431 feet to left field, and it was 107.1 miles per hour off the bat. Things were good.
Starting point is 00:05:58 Things felt good because the Diamondbacks do not score runs in the first inning. They don't score runs very often, and they haven't in a while. In fact, Moreno's home run was D-BAC's first run in the first inning in the entire month of September, which it's the 15th, by the way, and a few days even into August. August 28th was the last time the Diamondback scored a run in the first inning of a baseball game? What? Is that real?
Starting point is 00:06:34 Yes, that's real. We check the math twice. my friend Alex from 98.7 and myself couldn't believe it. And courtesy of our guy Jack, the Diamondbacks, he was tweeting about this earlier. Diamondbacks have 64 runs this season scored in the first inning, which is dead last in Major League Baseball. They've also given up the seventh most runs, I believe, in the first inning, which doesn't help things either. But, you know, it's, this home run. Damon seems like it was three games ago after all of the mediocrity that we witnessed from this offense tonight.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Yeah, I mean, it's it's hard to walk away with anything positive after a night like that, Derek. That's for sure. And I don't want to take away from Gabby, who's been great this season in one of the lone bright spots of this entire offense. He was great tonight. In fact, Gabby was one of us late in this game when he had to witness Ildemar Vargas get tagged out. on a very makeable, like, slide to first base that he didn't make. Instead, he kind of jumped up into getting tagged and ended the inning. And the Diamondbacks didn't score.
Starting point is 00:07:51 They didn't walk off the Marlins, and they did not win this baseball game. But I got to give a shout out to our friends at Arizona Lottery. And we love the play from Arizona Lottery. And Gabriel Moreno's first inning home run was our play of the game. And it like things were good at that point. Things felt good. I loved that play. I did.
Starting point is 00:08:15 I love that play. Didn't love the play of the offense the rest of this game. Let me take the worst loss of the season. Little headline off of the screen there. Yeah, yeah. But they love the play. Yeah, Arizona lottery, love the play doesn't deserve that. Gabrielle Moreno doesn't deserve that.
Starting point is 00:08:31 No, he doesn't. He doesn't deserve anything. He didn't deserve to be the only guy on. base multiple times tonight in the first nine innings of this baseball game. Literally, even though the Diamondbacks had plenty of hits and plenty of scoring opportunities, Gabriel Moreno was still the only guy that was on base multiple times. He wants to win. Do the rest of you?
Starting point is 00:08:55 I feel like it's a valid question because the offense looked lost in what became essentially a bullpen game after junk left. And still, even while he was still in the game in the second. inning Nolan Aronado hit a leadoff single. Lawler put him into scoring position with a two-out single of his own, and the debacks couldn't capitalize on that lead-off runner
Starting point is 00:09:18 or that runner in scoring position. But the bigger missed opportunity happened just one inning later, and the third one, Cotell Marte hit a lead-off double his 28th of the season, and then Moreno walked to put two on with no outs,
Starting point is 00:09:33 and you know how that story ends. No runner's scoring. Right? Predomo pops up, Carol strikes out, and Aronado flies out to end the inning. Apparently, after Nolan Aronado got that lead off single in the second inning and then flew out there in the third, he was experiencing some discomfort in his thumb, and he was removed from the game for Jose Fernandez, and he has left thumb or right thumb inflammation after the game Tori commented on it, and it didn't sound super serious.
Starting point is 00:10:06 we'll hear from Tori here momentarily. But in the fourth, the debacks once again got their lead-off runner on base when brand-new snake, Jesus Sanchez, singled on a soft liner that reached the outfield, and the next three batterers went down in order. And Diamondbacks had three innings in a row where the lead-off batter reached
Starting point is 00:10:25 and would not score in any of those innings. And the Diamondbacks left 13 runners on base, 14 runners on base in the nine innings of this game, in the first nine innings of this game. that's how that went but I think when you watched what the pitching staff
Starting point is 00:10:48 was able to do against the Marlins one mistake from Soroka tied this game up at one there wasn't a very big margin for error there so I don't blame Soroka for giving up a single run in his outing but you know it was it was the same throughout this game
Starting point is 00:11:03 the Diamondbacks held the Marlins here to five hits five. Five. bits, four runs scored, and a loss in 11 innings, somehow, some way. And from there, after those three innings where the Diamondbacks, you know, squandered those opportunities from, they just, they couldn't hit. They couldn't get anybody on base. Had several one, two, three innings after that. And, you know, again, it just, it seemed like it was always building up to something for there just to be nothing, nothing. It would just fade away. You had the ninth inning,
Starting point is 00:11:38 the game still tied at one with one out. Newt bar walks. Marte hits into the fielder's choice to get Newt bar at second, but Marte is at first. Moreno, singles again, gets another hit on a ball misplayed by Otto Lopez, and the debacks had runners on the corners in the ninth with two outs, and Perdomo lines out on a 1-0 count. I had a conversation with our guy, Jesse Friedman,
Starting point is 00:12:04 and we were talking about Davidson de Los Santos. but we were also talking about what happened to our risk king. And when you talk about the Diamondbacks offense as a whole, there's been a lot of things that have obviously gone downhill since last season in 2024 and 2023. But Pardomo's production with runners in scoring position truly might be the biggest factor this year that's different. And again, he earned that nickname, the risk king.
Starting point is 00:12:39 We didn't call him it just as like a joke, you know, like where you call a fat guy slim or something like that. No, no, no. This man was incredible. In fact, in 2022, he slashed 283, 376, 404 for a 780 OPS with runners in scoring position. In 2020, he slashed 313, 417, 531 for a 948 OPS with runners in scoring position. 24 took a little bit of a dip. 287, 363, 372. Slug really went down on that one.
Starting point is 00:13:13 735 OPS, but still decent numbers with runners in scoring position. His best season, though, last year. 2025-331, 412, 487 with an 899 OPS, and far more opportunities that he had in 2023. And truly was the risk king for this team with 78 RBI, 78 RBI last season with runners in scoring position for Perdomo.
Starting point is 00:13:41 This year, slashing 170, 286, 248 for a 534 OPS. He has with... What do we have now, Damon? We have 9, 10 games left in the season. He has 38 RBI versus 78 from last season. So, and these are just his numbers with runners. in scoring position.
Starting point is 00:14:06 I'm sure Cotell Martes and Corbyn Carroll's numbers look equally atrocious and probably in comparison to their past few years as well. The stars have truly let the team down this year. The stars have let the team down
Starting point is 00:14:20 this year. Which is pretty ironic considering in the offseason Derek, me and you were sitting up here going just give these guys some help and this team will be a okay and just not at all. Meanwhile, we have Nolan Aronado I think leading the team in home runs are tied for the lead.
Starting point is 00:14:38 Yeah, like 20. He's like 20. He has 20. I think it's 23, 24. He actually has. He has more. I was surprised by how many Aronado has, to be honest. And it's only because Aronado tends to be a feast or famine kind of guy.
Starting point is 00:14:51 And he tends to famine more when he has runners in scoring position ahead of them. But that this missing production from Perdomo is a huge factor here. And again, it's not just Prudonimo. but it just goes to show how different his particular numbers are with runners in scoring position this season and why this team as a whole has been so bad at producing runs. They've had so many games like this where, you know, I think, you know, in the past, I don't ever remember the Diamondbacks having this kind of offense where, you know, they squandered this many opportunities over the course of the game.
Starting point is 00:15:29 And it might have happened a couple of times peppered throughout the season, but they, you know, This is becoming a regular occurrence, especially over this last two-week stretch where the Diamondbacks need to be playing their best baseball. And they're simply not. They didn't play their best baseball today. That's for goddamn sure. And they didn't play their best baseball in the 10th and 11th innings either. The ninth inning there, again, just ended with disappointment.
Starting point is 00:15:54 The 10th inning was a catastrophe. There's no other way to put it, Damon, right? It was a disaster. The 10th inning was. an unmitigated disaster. With Pardomo on second as the ghost runner, the Marlins start the inning off by walking Corbin Carroll to put two runners on on first and second. And Jose Fernandez, who came into the game for Nolan Arnado and, of course, had a major fielding error in a huge point of the game, but luckily it didn't end up biting the coming back to bite the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:16:30 he laid down a perfect bunt that advanced both runners in the scoring position. You got Pardomo on second. You got Cerell on third, Carol on second, and you have one out. Walt Schmidt reaches on a fielder's choice because the Marlins come home with the ball to get Pardomo. And it appeared that Marlins catcher Brian Navaretto, Navaretto, blocked home plate with his foot. But according to Tori after the game, what he did was allowable by the rules.
Starting point is 00:17:09 And according to Tori, it sounded like Perdomo just like tried to go around him instead of through him. And if he puts his foot on the plate like that and Perdomo rushes through him, isn't that going to be an out for Perdomo? Like, I don't get this blocking play. But Tori made it sound.
Starting point is 00:17:29 after the game like Perdomo should have just chunked his ass and if that's the case then I wish he would have I really wish he would have but could you imagine Perdomo doing that I can't he's the nicest guy that you've ever met so I can't imagine him intentionally wanting to hurt or do damage to another person kind of goes the same for a couple other guys too right
Starting point is 00:17:52 like I couldn't imagine Bargis doing it couldn't imagine Gabby doing it I can imagine Corbin doing it just because Corbin's like A-Train and the boys right Like he doesn't care about who he hurts with his speed. So that's different. But when it comes to when it comes to Prudomo, apparently that blocking the plate, which it very much looked like it was,
Starting point is 00:18:13 like it was blocking the plate was okay. That was allowable. So then you have two outs. I just wish it was a better slide into the plate, man. I agree. And I'm not saying that he was like a, I'm not saying it was a bad slide attempt or anything. Like I don't,
Starting point is 00:18:32 I'm not saying that he like did anything wrong. He like trying to slide around him though, right? Like I don't know because I was kind of watching it on replay on the TV in the press box. Well, I wish he did so even more. I wish it was more of a swim move attempt, which it didn't seem like he really attempted. He almost thought he was going to beat it.
Starting point is 00:18:49 He almost thought that he was going to beat it to the outside. It felt like, but he didn't realize. But there's no plate to the outside. He didn't realize he was going to get blocked the way that he got blocked. Yeah. It's really hard to read that in the moment, but I just, I guess from my perspective with the disappointing season that you're talking about with Perdomo earlier, I think that this is the type of winning play that could change our perspective on his season. Yeah. If we're talking about a playoff chase, Geraldo Perdomo makes a swim move slide attempt into home, hits the bag, debacks win.
Starting point is 00:19:22 It's one of the moments of the season. And all of a sudden, it kickstarts your playoff berth. I think that, you know, like that could, that that's the type of play I, I almost expect out of Geraldo Perdomo. And so that's where I guess I'm a little bit disappointed because the offense has been disappointing, but I would think that he would make up for it by by winning when it matters in moments like that. And, you know, he got he got stuffed. He got absolutely stuffed at the goal line. He did. He did. And it sucks because the next play really felt like the exact kind of play.
Starting point is 00:19:57 where chaos has been created and somehow the Diamondbacks walk out with a win because there's too many fast guys on base and the Marlins just make a defensive mistake. And they were this close to that happening when Ildamaro Vargas grounded out to the left side, shortstop, throws it, Otto Lopez,
Starting point is 00:20:15 throws it over to first baseman Davidson, Dalo Santos, former Diamondback prospect who somehow, some way, made a tag on Vargas because Vargas just, came into first base with the weirdest energy and approach. Like, if Vargas would have slid into first base? You know what Eldamara Vargas looked like on that play?
Starting point is 00:20:40 Like someone who got absolutely cold cocked by Max Muncie earlier this year on a, on a similar play near first base that took his head off. And I feel like maybe he's, there's some like Vietnam warm. flashbacks in the background going on. I don't know, but he went in very timid. If he goes in to the bag hard, if he, if he dives even, I mean, it's not even a play if he dives. And I'm not, again, that's one of those situations like Pardomo where it's easy for us
Starting point is 00:21:15 to say on the podcast when in the moment, that's really difficult to react to and read. But sometimes those are the big plays that you need to make that change your season or are the difference between you not making the playoffs or sitting at home, right? So in this moment, you know, you have two really, really unfortunate events kind of go against you. I mean, the throw home was not a good throw against Perdomo. No, it wasn't. And it goes high, but it goes so high that the catcher with perfect timing plants his foot down and is able to get in the way of Perdomo.
Starting point is 00:21:53 I mean, I just, it's just an unbelievable. culmination of events there, Derek. I can't believe it. And I, nothing to add to that. I simply couldn't believe it either. I couldn't believe what we were watching. I couldn't believe the, like, it felt like when they did this in the bottom of the 10th, when the bottom of the 10th went this inning and it ended, I was like,
Starting point is 00:22:17 there's no way it's not over now. There's no way. Because not only do we not really have baseball games go past 11 innings, much any longer, but it definitely didn't feel like the Diamondbacks were going to come out on top of this one. After that, yeah, you're sitting there
Starting point is 00:22:34 and you're like, no way, right? No way we can win this ballgame at this point? They walk Otto Lopez and I had a little giggle to myself because I just thought, like, you thought it was going to be Otto Lopez, but watch it not going to be Otto Lopez or you're going to walk in a run here or something.
Starting point is 00:22:50 I didn't expect a, like, expect a, you know, three run double to the outfield wall that scored everybody. I didn't expect that. But I did expect, you know, I just expected this to go sideways for the Diamondbacks. And I'm so sad that it did. And I'm sorry for them that it did. But they did it to themselves. And as much as I say, I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:23:14 I'm also like disgusted with them. Manufacture a run, man. Put down a suicide squeeze with Corbyn Carroll on third base in extras. Right? I like that much better. I feel like that gives you more of a chance that some random nonsense bad play being made because of Corbyn's speed rather than anything else.
Starting point is 00:23:36 Especially like, do you think they're really ready for a suicide squeeze out of nowhere in extra innings? Like, let's get crazy. Let's get nuts. Let's manufacture a goddamn run. It was a bad swing by Walshman in the first place on the original play at home for Pardomo.
Starting point is 00:23:53 And then, you know, when Vargas is running to first there, like, you feel like it's a gift from God, you know? Like, you're like, oh, my God. Why did Otto Lopez throw the ball like that? Yeah. And he throws it off his front foot, sails it. Yeah. And you're like, that's it. That's going to be a D-Bax W.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Davis and Dela Santos has to jump up and grab it. I thought there was no way he was going to be out at first. I really didn't. When the ball came in and he had to reach up so high to grab it, I could not believe it. I could not believe it. And it had to be Davis and Dela Santos, a guy that, like, we threw on the trash heap, you know? And a guy who I, from my understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong, anybody in the chat
Starting point is 00:24:29 that knows more, I thought that one of his downsides was that he was just like straight up a bad defensive player. Like they didn't know where to put him on defense at all because he couldn't really play it on a major league level. I don't even think that this was a magnificent defensive play by him. I mean, it's maybe a little bit of luck, but it's probably the best defensive play of his entire career. It felt like a lot of luck.
Starting point is 00:24:50 And like you said, it felt like Vargas. maybe, you know, being so worried, and he's a big dude as well, right? Like Davis and DeL Santos is not a small guy. So, I mean, you could be right about that, like not wanting to get body slammed again like he did by Max Muncie. He might be enough of a thing. Yeah, I mean, just to make him hesitate a bit. He needs to learn that not, he's not playing the Dodgers. So that kind of stuff's not going to happen.
Starting point is 00:25:15 Well, it's here from Tori on the loss. Here's what Tori had to say overall about this frustrating night. Yeah, this one sucked. We let a game get away from us that I felt like we should have won. There were several situations that we walked ourselves into. We executed, put ourselves in a good position to score runs, and we didn't. And, you know, the name of the game is going out there and grinding down at bats and executing at the most critical times.
Starting point is 00:25:40 You know, we continue to build innings. We had a number of guys left on base. You know, I felt like the approach at times was solid. We were seeing pitches and grinding it down. We just couldn't get it done. And that was the difference in the game. They had a guy that started the game on the bench, came up, was ready, drove the ball and slugged with the bases loaded and two out. So that's what it took to win the game.
Starting point is 00:26:01 We just couldn't get that done. Oh, what a terrible day offensively for this team. I think that there's a lot of other complaints you could have. But, I mean, we're, well, and we're going to, we're going to play the blame game. Oh, we're still going to play the blame game. Don't you worry. But I have to talk about the bomb. of the 11th. We're going to talk about how they scored and we're going to talk about the pitching,
Starting point is 00:26:28 right? But the bottom of the 11th with two outs, down 4-1, Kattel Marte hit an RBI double that scored Vargas as the ghost runner and cut the deficit to 4-2. And that was it. That was what sent me, that hit sent me over the edge. I broke mentally at that point because I just started laughing like a crazy person who couldn't stop laughing and might have needed to be institutionalized. You finally get the hit you need after you were down four to one in this baseball game. You had six, seven different innings where this hit, this single extra base hit, any extra base hit with runners in scoring position, would have won you the goddamn baseball game, any single one at any time, including in extra innings and in not in the first nine
Starting point is 00:27:32 innings. And you finally get the hit when you're down four to one in the bottom of the 11th. Are you trolling us? It was unbelievable. It truly feels like once the pressure, of winning a ball game is off of their shoulders, they can finally hit and they can finally score and they can finally play baseball. But if all they need is to add on a few extra runs to ensure a victory, they go, oh for 90,
Starting point is 00:28:11 and leave 150 runners on base. How many? A hundred and 90 runners on base, David. It was a major league record. It was the first time. We're going to wear that out before of this game. And yeah, Nate Cleveland, we must always come back. You can't come back if you're not down first.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Ran out of time tonight on that whole thought process. I am so angry at everybody. But one person who I'm not angry at is our king snake tonight, and that is Gabriel Moreno. And none of you should be angry at him. You should all bring him your finest meats and cheeses, lay flowers at his. feet and thank him for being the sole reason why this team right now isn't 15 games below 500.
Starting point is 00:29:06 It's two for three tonight with a home run, two walks, and a stolen base. He also was one of us when Vargas got tagged because go watch his reaction to that happening. Oh, I'm not talking about Cattell, you idiot. Talking about the entire team. This was a generalization. not blaming Marte for having a two-hit night, blaming all the guys that went over the night or one for five and didn't have a hit or RBI
Starting point is 00:29:41 and runners-in-squering position. And none other than Killer Rex was going to take that. It's going to be Killer Rex. Yeah. Because he's one of those people. And you know exactly what I mean when I say that, Killer-Rex. We're going to take a quick break. And on the other side of this break,
Starting point is 00:29:54 we're going to talk about the pitching staff who I don't really blame for this loss because this game should not have gone on for as long as it did. And Taylor Clark, even though he blew it in the 11th, is going to escape my blame because he still has a sub three ERA. So don't you go anywhere? You're watching the PH&X Diamondback Show. Well, Michael Soroka had his first actual full non-pigyback start tonight and he was good man again it looks good to have michael saroka back in the starting rotation he just once again did not get run support like many starting pitchers have not received lately uh he had an easy first inning uh with a two out walk of that
Starting point is 00:33:48 auto lopez which i'm fine with doing that the man hit 305 again even in the 11th inning when they walked lopez um to pitch to the eventual game winner uh that It was the difference of a guy hitting 305 or a guy hitting 2-11. So I think that at least odds-wise, they made the right choice there. But obviously the outcome less than desirable. He did give up a lead-off single in the second inning to Javier Sanhoa, who we are sick of, by the way. It's already sick of that guy.
Starting point is 00:34:18 But he did get three strikeouts to end the inning. And he was getting a lot of whiffs. He was getting a lot of swing and miss. He had a one, two, three-third inning with two more strikeouts this time of De Laos and Kyle St. hours. And with one out in the fourth inning and cruising, Soroka finally made a mistake with his four-seem fastball that Griffin Conine did not miss. He smashed his 16th home run of the year all the way to the pool,
Starting point is 00:34:44 which that never feels great when they hit it into our pool and tied the game up at one. Then he had a one, two, three-fifth inning with a leadout strikeout of Augustine Ramirez. So strong night for Soroka. His pitch count did kind of creep up there. he did hit 80 and Lavello had said that his pitch count was going to be limited to 75 to 80 pitches he was right there at 80 I did ask him after the game if he
Starting point is 00:35:08 would be you know at all if he could have gone longer if he felt like he could have gone longer and he said he was he was right there at the wall right he was right as far as him being stretched out and 80 pitches is still a decent outing for most starters however it feels like he will be
Starting point is 00:35:24 at full strength the next time around and again his slurve as it has been forever, has been, was really good tonight. Let's, if we could take a look here at his pitch chart, he used his slurve 31% of the outing, he got six whips on it. His four seam was whizzing tonight. He used it 28% of the outing. It maxed out at 96.8 miles per hour and average 94.2, which I believe was like a whole mile per hour up from his yearly average so far. So he was, he was bring in the fastball, but you can see the four-seam fastball missed quite a few times, missed on the outside, missed high, some of them completely uncompetitive pitches.
Starting point is 00:36:06 But he did get two whiffs on his four-same. He used the sinker, 16 percent, and the change-up 15 percent. He used the cutter 10 percent. You got three whiffs on the change-up, two whips on the cutter. And total, 13 swings and misses tonight along with six strikeout. So Michael Soroka, I mean, a good outing. Like literally the only thing keeping this from being a really good outing is one more inning of work, essentially. But the slurve.
Starting point is 00:36:35 Look at the slurve, that beautiful periwinkle. It's landing exactly where he wanted it to land, diving away from batters. At times, they really couldn't do much with it. And again, it's the pitch that he got the most action on as far as whiffs are concerned. But let's go ahead and light up that circle. K strikeout meter because once again the Circle K strikeout meter doesn't want to hunt or doesn't want to be fed.
Starting point is 00:36:59 It wants to hunt but six strikeouts for the Circle K Strikeout meter tonight. It's a decent amount and I feel like Michael Soroka has fed the Circle case strikeout meter about as good as anyone that isn't Erod this year. I mean honestly even better than Erod. He's been the strikeout meter caretaker.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Yeah there have been some times where he's been really putting in some big time strikeout performances. Again five innings tonight. Two hits. one earned run, one single walk, six strikeouts. A great outing from Soroka. And again, putting up better numbers overall than most of our pitchers have all season long, even Erod.
Starting point is 00:37:34 Right? Like, because Erod, he's been having success, but a big part of that success hasn't been having nights like this where he has six strikeouts or more. He usually has been, you know, that number, those totals have been pretty small, but the result has been there. And the result, especially for Erod, has always been that, you know, zero number there for the earn runs or one number for the earn runs, much like Soroka had tonight.
Starting point is 00:37:59 Meanwhile, they had to turn to the bullpen. This one got long, probably not ideal that they had to use some of the arms that they had to use as some of those arms approach. 70 innings pitched in the 2026 season, which you do not really want them to be at. And those two guys are the guys that pitched at the end of this game in Kevin Ginkle and Taylor Clark, guys who had very, very different innings and extra innings. But Justin Martinez was the first one out to relieve Soroka. He made his first back-to-back apparent since returning from the IL with this one.
Starting point is 00:38:32 He gave up one hit, struck out one and one inning of work. Brandon Garcia gave him multiple innings tonight. He gave them two innings with one hit and one strikeout. Juan Murillo continues to be a certified G and a bona fide stud. And as many of you know, you cannot teach that. He had one inning with zeros across the board. but honestly, if I could give a second King Snake out, it would probably go to Kevin Ginkle for what he did in the 10th inning.
Starting point is 00:38:57 Kevin Ginkle came in and just dominated the Marlins on a night where one just, you know, last outing, he was not very good. And for him to come back and bounce back like he did tonight, it was amazing. And the Diamondbacks needed it, right? The ghost runner, you just kind of assume the ghost runner is going to score. So anytime a reliever can go out there and hold, you know, the opposition to not scoring.
Starting point is 00:39:21 You tip your cap to that reliever. One inning of work, two strikeouts for for Ginkl, and also an incredible roar. I'm not even going to call it a scream. The man got off the mound and he roared is what he did. I love, I love Ginkle roars. And he roared in a way where it was like, it was like, oh, we're going to win, roar.
Starting point is 00:39:41 And it wasn't what ended up happening. I did think we were going to win after that. You disappointed Ginkle, all right, and his roar. I definitely thought we were going to win after that. I mean, it was literally inject this, inject this into my veins, inject this slow motion screaming that Kevin Gingle is doing into my veins. But Taylor Clark came out. He did not have himself as good of an inning. He gave up a couple of walks, and that really led to the big hit occurring there at the end.
Starting point is 00:40:13 He gives up that one hit, which scores three runs, two of which are earned. one is the ghost runner. He did get one strike out. He did finish the inning. But the damage was done. And after this offense put up the awful performance that they did after the first inning today, it was a wrap. But again, I definitely might have lost my mind when Kattel got that RBI double in the bottom of the inning. And I might not still be right, honestly.
Starting point is 00:40:44 I might never be okay ever again. but one way I could be okay is if this team makes the postseason, which is feeling like it's slipping away literally as we speak. Luckily, though, if you want to look on the bright side, which I know you don't, I know Damon definitely doesn't want to look on the bright side. I hate you, Derek. I hate you when you do this.
Starting point is 00:41:05 We're not even at the hour mark and you're going to do this to us. Let me just do it real fast. Then we're going to just, I'm going to run like a coward to the commercial break. But I'm just going to say this. I know they missed a huge opportunity. to gain ground in the wild card race. But at least everybody else lost so we didn't lose ground?
Starting point is 00:41:26 Such a loser mentality. Ah, all I got. That's all I got for you guys. That's all I got. I don't got anything else. It's all I got. It just makes me sick. I know. I make myself sick.
Starting point is 00:41:41 Trust me. Trust me. Let's go ahead and take a quick break on the other side of this break. We're going to do the thing we've been really wanting to do, which is play the blame game and disperse blame around this team. Don't worry, pitching staff, even though you gave up three runs there in the 11th, you're free and clear. We'll be right back. Don't you go anywhere? You're watching the PHA next time and Back Show. I would argue that here in this very hot state of Arizona, summer projects might not be the best time to do your project. So now as we enter the fall, now is the best time for you to get all of that stuff that you've been looking to get done around your home.
Starting point is 00:44:01 Derek, there's no question. There's no question. It's the holidays. You got to get done with all of days. You're getting right into the holidays here. this is the perfect time to get your home renovation projects done. It's a little bit cooler outside. I mean, there's never been a better time to get it done.
Starting point is 00:44:17 You say you're not having people over, right? It's football season. I mean, it's football season. You just never know. Damon and I are coming over to your house this Sunday because we're canceling dinner with Tori and we're coming over to watch football with you. And we want your house to look good. We want to be impressed by your home.
Starting point is 00:44:33 A great way for you to impress people is to replace your windows and to not only beautify your home and add value to it, But to keep that hot air out and the cool air in. So when we come over, I don't get all sweaty hanging out watching football with you. All right. The Window Depot has you covered. They are experts when it comes to windows. And they have the unbeatable prices and the in-stock quantities that you are looking for to get that job done today.

Starting point is 00:45:26 You can shop online at your nearest location, go around, pick up, and don't worry that they don't have what you're looking for. The window depot more than just a window store. Eriton appearance. We got Eriton in here. Well, then. we know that we've done something wrong. If Erriton's paying attention to the Diamondbacks,
Starting point is 00:45:48 we appreciate you being here at Freckled Bomba, and we appreciate all of you guys being here. And since you're here, and since we're all angry still about the Diamondbacks losing this game to the Marlins, you know what time it is. Damon, it's time to play the blame game. Get me up on a billboard.
Starting point is 00:46:03 I need to yell. Angry right now. Change like the caloric output that I can have the energy. But I think. It's like my rage grew as I got bigger up here on this billboard as well. Damon, leave that pitching light off. Don't you dare touch that light. Soroka, you did nothing wrong.
Starting point is 00:46:32 And even Taylor Clark, you did nothing wrong, my man. Well, you shouldn't have even been in this game. It should have never gotten to 11 innings. It shouldn't even gotten to extra innings. This game should have been over by a score of three to one after, eight and a half innings. I agree with that, but I wouldn't say he did nothing wrong.
Starting point is 00:46:53 Ah, yeah. No, in an alternate timeline, you know what he did? He put his feet up in the bullpen and never had to come out to the mound. That's the timeline I want to live in, Damon. And I know he did blow it. I'm not going to say he didn't.
Starting point is 00:47:07 But what were we expecting? We were we expecting our pitching staff to hold the Marlins at bay all goddamn night long until our offense finally figured shit out? Is that what we were expecting? because that's a little outrageous to expect. The runs are going to score eventually. They're not a dumpster fire of a baseball team.
Starting point is 00:47:27 We are. We are the ones right now that can't figure our offense out. They don't even have anything to blame for at this point. I'm surprised they even put up such a tough fight. I thought they would have given up and wanted to go back to the hotel, get some decent food before all the decent food places closed for the night because we know that happens at 10 p.m. Um, so I'm, I'm, Nate Cleveland says I am fake angry because he's calling me vacation boy.
Starting point is 00:47:55 Nate, I am not nearly, you, you are not nearly making the sacrifices that I am for this baseball team. Vacation boy? I booked non-refundable vacations for the purpose of this team making the playoffs and making me regret every single one of my actions. That wasn't for the purpose of my own amusement or benefit. I am simply antagonizing this team into ruining my credit score when I inevitably have to somehow figure out of way out of this $780 debt for a vacation I planned the week of October 8th. Details.
Starting point is 00:48:35 All right. Derek hasn't even told me to get that offer. I don't care you call me vacation, boy. I care that you called me fake angry. How? I'm not even going to say it. I'm not. Can I search? Can I do it where it's 12 p.m.
Starting point is 00:48:47 Stanley says on vacation boy. Huh? Stanley says on vacation. You are, well, you are vacation boy. One of us has PTO left and one of us does not. Say that to my seven days of PTO.
Starting point is 00:48:59 I have left there. One of us is going to lose 10 days of PTO because he doesn't get to use it by the end of 2026. Is that going to be Damon or is it going to be me? All right. Vacation boy. Next one. batting offense turn the light on add more lights light it up like a christmas tree let's hang lights around
Starting point is 00:49:21 the edges and then let's wrap lights around it let's get like those houses on your block that put up way too many lights where you're looking at their lights and you're like did you really need to have no roof showing because of how many lights you have up that's how many lights the offense deserves tonight and even that's not enough lights and even that isn't bright enough to really illustrate how incompetent this offense was tonight. Unbelievable bad. I mean, just so bad. And I mean, again, we're going to get to the other guy here in a minute.
Starting point is 00:49:57 And I know you guys want me to blame him too. And don't worry, don't you worry. I'm going to worry. I'm going to worry. You don't know exactly who I'm talking about. We're going to get to him, my friend, Tori. But batting, again, I just, I can't believe that this team didn't find a way to bring home one of those runs throughout this game.
Starting point is 00:50:16 And even I feel like I'm making it out because after what, the fourth inning, fifth inning, six, inning, seven, they're, they went into a complete new level of inefficiency where they weren't even getting hits, weren't even getting runners on base, right? So it's not like this entire game was just runners on everywhere. But again, you get one or two of those runs in at any point. And you feel like, you know, what am I saying? Oh, look at me coming up with like, oh, if you scored more, one more run, you would have won. That's something that you should have figured out. And you should have figured that out enough that if you would have figured it out, you could have manufactured a run. There were ways to have runners steal bases.
Starting point is 00:51:01 There's ways to bunt. There's ways to do things. Again, this is nothing new. I shouldn't have to explain this. This is the makings of like a person that is going insane right now. I've lost my mind because of this team. All right. Defense was fine.
Starting point is 00:51:15 I mean, there were a few actually good defensive plays. I mean, Jose Fernandez did make that fielding error. That was the one of the – Kevin and I were watching that at the office. I told Kevin that's one of the worst attempts at a defensive play I've ever seen at the Major League level. Yeah. That was so bad. Oh, man. He didn't even come close to getting a glove on it.
Starting point is 00:51:43 No. No, and I mean, it's also very ironic that it's the replacement at third base for our platinum glove defender, Nolan Arnado. Yeah, and Jose, he's been pretty good on defenses here, but he has had like some mistakes in him that look like that. So, you know, I don't want to like hamper on him. But in the defense wasn't that bad tonight. It wasn't what cost them this game. That was just a funny play. Yeah. And it's like like if it compounds it and makes innings go on, like, yeah, it did, but it wasn't enough.
Starting point is 00:52:14 for I think that to be a super egregious, you know, out or mistake there. But Tori, manager cap, turn that one on. We're doing all teal tonight, I guess, because the teal lights are coming on. Again, the same thing with the offense. If Tori and his coaching staff can't figure out a way to manufacture a run after watching this team do what it did for the first four innings, seeing that they were just heading, I mean, I don't know, man. I know it's hard to judge.
Starting point is 00:52:44 I'll say that when you're watching a baseball game like this one, you did feel early on, like the very next inning is going to be the inning we bust through. The very next inning is going to be the big offensive inning. I kept writing it in my notes like an idiot. I kept being like, ooh, the fifth, nothing. The sixth, all, nothing, right? I was waiting for it because it just felt like it.
Starting point is 00:53:05 It felt like the Diamondbacks were dominating the Marlins all night. But there comes a point where you are in that fifth and sixth inning and you see this offense not doing anything where you now at this point need to take this game into your own hands and score that one run that's going to be the difference maker. And you have no idea that it's going to turn into this 10 innings, 11 innings, eventually a 4-2 loss,
Starting point is 00:53:27 but you got to realize that just like with this season, your time is running out. And when you get into those seventh inning, eighth inning situations, and now your offense hasn't really done much all day, especially with runners in scoring position, leaving as many runners as they did. They were 10 runners left on base through the eighth inning. Right?
Starting point is 00:53:47 Just that. Just that. That point. Like, we're moving into manufacturing a run phase, and that is where I don't really see Tori making that change. And you just know this team with the way that they're able to run, steal bases, bunt, do all of those small baseball things so well and cause chaos that you feel like if they could turn to that, they could win a game like this, but they don't.
Starting point is 00:54:12 It never comes. They're still up there swinging away, and they're still up there trying to hit three home runs and one at bat. And that falls on the manager and the coaching staff. And I'm getting to the point where I'm like really frustrated with the results here because I still just cannot believe that this offense specifically is the same offense that was so, that was just running on all cylinders in 24. and 25, with very few different pieces here, and even the different pieces you could argue
Starting point is 00:54:43 are the ones who are doing it. Vargas all April and Nolan Arnado all season long. New Bar has been significantly better since coming over here from the St. Louis Cardinals. And, you know, again, we've talked about contributions from guys like Tim Tawa and Jordan Lawler. As Damon said earlier, it really comes down to the stars. And even though we got a walk off from Corbyn Carroll just one night ago, we are not getting that star performance from these guys on a day-in, day-out basis. And in fact, sometimes it feels like they're a detriment, you know, to these big moments, right? That they're not able to step up in these big moments. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:55:26 I don't know. But we did have some more from Tori, including Tori here on the offense and what. you know, what it, what this loss means for this team and what the poor performance today means for this team. Here's what Tori had to say. You know, there was some situations offensively that, you know, we, I want to replay in my own head and having a chance to think about it a lot. But we got to be patient. We got to, we got to see the ball in our zone with men in scoring position, less than two outs. We got to be able to fearlessly step into the batters box and execute at a high level.
Starting point is 00:56:03 We didn't get that done today. But we knew the circumstances. It hurts, and there's nothing we can do about it. I'm sitting here telling you what we went through and we got to find a way to get it done tomorrow. It's not a fast turnaround, but it's the final game of the series and we can't do one damn thing about the past. We've got to look forward and just keep pushing the envelope
Starting point is 00:56:27 and do what we do best, score some runs and win a baseball game. He was very jovial before the game, so it was hard to see him like that after. But it's draining. And, you know, again, his career is on the line here when it comes to this team. I always have people in the chat saying, you know, they need to fire Tori. There is no firing of Tori that needs to be done. His contract is up at the end of this year.
Starting point is 00:56:50 There's no firing. And I think when you're this close to the end of your contract, as long as he's been the manager, they're not going to fire him. They're going to let it run out and, you know, probably not bring him back. I don't even know under what circumstances this team would, would bring them back. And I don't even know if the Diamondbacks not making the playoffs is a deal breaker where they don't extend them
Starting point is 00:57:10 or don't bring them back on a new contract either. Right? But overall, you know, Tori is watching, you know, his time with the Diamondbacks also slip through his fingers if this team can't find a way to win baseball games and make their way into the playoffs. I know that pleases a lot of people that do not like Tori and do not want him as manager of this baseball team any longer.
Starting point is 00:57:32 But I assure you, your feelings might change once there's some separation there, once he's not actually the manager, and once he's possibly with another team and, you know, whatever. But I will also agree that if they fall short of the playoffs, it would almost be insane to run it back again in 2027 and expect different results. That's literally the definition of insanity, doing the same thing and expecting different results. It's why this team's driving me insane, as I showed you earlier. But Tori did give us a explanation of that play at the plate where Perdomo was blocked. Here's what Tori had to say about
Starting point is 00:58:13 that particular situation. Yeah, I know the rule. So if the infield's in, the, the catcher can stand in front of the, in front of the plate. So, you know, there's, he puts himself at risk. He goes, goes into the old school collision rule, like you can run them over. You know, but Jerry was trying to make a play. And I thought he made a great read on the play. We were running contact, and the catcher just stepped on his hand and blocked the plate. So good job by him. They understood the rules.
Starting point is 00:58:43 This is a very well-trained team. And their catcher put his foot in the right place and blocked the plate. So it was a perfectly legal play because of the infield being in. Disaster. Yeah. I mean, that's just like one of those things that when you look back on the season, you know, that that and then the subsequent play where vargas you know almost slows up and allows himself to be tagged at first base yeah those two plays are potentially going to cost you the playoffs
Starting point is 00:59:13 and like i don't know how i'm going to sleep at night i really Derek i really don't i'm going to be thinking of those laughing like the joker in a room with padded walls and a jacket that doesn't allow me to use my hands anymore i know i'm going to be doing it with the sweet sweet sounds of the ocean in my ear while I sleep on a beach. We'll do it right next to each other in the same mental asylum. Okay, you're, yeah, you're in Puerto Rico. Yeah, that's right. You've moved.
Starting point is 00:59:41 You've moved to the Caribbean. I cover the Santorsay, uh, what are they, the crab catchers now. Um, but anyway, we've got one more from Tori here. Uh, here he is on Soroka in the bullpen, uh, and their performance tonight. Michael, I thought was more than efficient. He was throwing the ball extremely well. The pitch count climbed at the pace we expected. He just was right at that, right around that pitch count.
Starting point is 01:00:07 Could have sent him back out for a batter or two, but it just didn't make sense. He made the one mistake that I remember, aside from that, he was real good, a lot of swing and miss. Bullpen was real good. We matched up the way we wanted to, and then we just got clipped. We got clipped in the extra innings. Got clipped. Got clipped in extra innings. That's definitely notoriasm I'll never forget, but I know we don't want to.
Starting point is 01:00:28 still let's take a quick look at the numbers from tonight's game and this loss because it's pretty miserable. 4-2 loss, both teams had two extra base hits. You had runners in scoring position. Diamondbacks ended up going one for 12 thanks to Cattell's RBI double in extra innings. Meanwhile, the Marlins were just one for seven themselves with runners in scoring position. Diamondbacks ended up with a 33.3% hard hit percentage to the Marlins 25%. the marlins had a 171 expected batting average to the diamondbacks two 52 and when all was sudden done the debacks were one for two with aBS challenges meanwhile the marlins were one for three
Starting point is 01:01:10 oh sweet yeah yeah it doesn't it doesn't feel good all right well let's take a quick break on the other side of this break we're just going to talk about you know something that's not this game and that is that the Diamondbacks have their prospects that are coming up for the Arizona Fall League named. Yay, don't go anywhere. You'll want to hear this because it's just so important. See, now you made me, like, now I'm not excited about Arizona Fall League Baseball? Oh, I hate this game so much.

So head on over to brand of bills.com and use code BBPHNX-15 for 15% off your first order. They let me make a hat there. And it was a life-altering experience, making a hat myself. There's no better place to start watching football at 10 o'clock in the morning.
Starting point is 01:03:31 Maybe head on to the pool for a little bit. Get yourself some frosty beverages. Get yourself dried back up in time for the afternoon games. Starting point is 01:04:14 And more about good times, the PHNX Sun Devils crew will be once again at Glen Rose Bar and Restaurant, glass clippings, rolling hills, to watch the Sun Devils take on Kansas in London presented by Kona Big Wave. And didn't we send Johnny to England? Isn't he in London, Damon? Johnny Venerable?
Starting point is 01:04:35 Oh, no, I'm sorry. Totry. Anthony Totry. Look, I want to send Johnny to the moon after him beating me in fantasy football. Guess you got this week, pal. Oh, God. I already hate you so much. Burning Wagon straight to the championship, straight to the top.
Starting point is 01:04:51 And meanwhile, I care so little about our fantasy football league this year. The only thing I ever want to do is not come in last and ever go back to the waffle house. Knock on wood about that. Get ready to earn waffles, buddy. I'm not. I refuse to. Have you seen Espo's team? But I will say that you can join us for a good time, including Espo.
Starting point is 01:05:11 You can razz him about his fantasy football team. The kickoff is at 9 a.m. It's free to RSBP. There will be drink samples. They'll be drink specials. $7. dollar kona drafts, $30 buckets of kona, and ultracans, plus a live broadcast featuring Espo, Bow, Bo, and Cole on site, along with Anthony Totry coming to us live from London,
Starting point is 01:05:33 England. So head on over to our event links or event section on our website or the link in our show notes and RSVP for free. Well, one last thing before we get out of here. You know we are fall guys around here. We love ourselves some Arizona Fall League Baseball. We thrive on it. and it would appear that we are going to get a good chance
Starting point is 01:05:53 to finally see Dmitrio Cresontes up close with our own eyes because he will be part of the Salt River Rafters team for the Arizona Fall League. And he is a guy that, again, has had some major injuries in his career that have prevented him from kind of being here and being part of the Arizona Fall League. And when he is healthy, he's a career 311 hitter in the minor leagues. He's 22 years old, and he is currently ripping the ball for the AAA Reno Aces.
Starting point is 01:06:25 But again, he is going to be here for Arizona Fall League. He is the Diamondbacks number one overall prospect and MLB's number 75 prospect. Patrick Forbes, the Diamondbacks number 11 prospect, and one of their top pitching prospects will also be a part of the Fall League roster, along with Joe Arola, Luke Craig, Connor Foley, Nathan Hall, Yassel Soler. That's a name that you might have heard before. And John West. So that is the crop of youngsters that's going to be part of that Rafters team during the Arizona Fall League play. So again, I'm not ready to move on to Arizona Fall League yet. We have so much more regular season Major League Baseball to play.
Starting point is 01:07:09 Plus, we have the Yoffs. And don't forget about the mother F and Yafs. I know it feels like it's gone. I know it feels like it's, it's a wrap, right? But I will say that with, you know, these other teams having equally tough schedules ahead and a similar, you know, kind of sense of urgency or panic, if you could, if you would, to make the playoffs.
Starting point is 01:07:38 Maybe, maybe, just maybe things will fall our way instead of what has happened the last two seasons. But we did have, we did talk to Lars Neubbar shortly after the game. And we discussed the loss, kind of talked about how he and Perdomo were chatting about it before the game. And he also told us that he not currently scoreboard watching just yet. This is what he had to say. You know, me and Donmore were talking about before the game today. Like, scoreboard watching really shouldn't be, you know, our main focus right now.
Starting point is 01:08:09 Should just be obviously winning games here. Given that we play three at the end of the year against them, it's like all we can do is control what, you know, how our game's going, the outcomes we have here. And so, you know, tough to hear, obviously. But, you know, we're, you know, I think more so upset that, you know, we didn't come out with this one to win. We also have Michael Soroka talking about this loss a little bit and on this team fighting for the playoffs. Still, this is what Mike had to say.
Starting point is 01:08:37 Yeah, it hurts. Yeah, I think you guys can feel that. I think, you know, we all felt that it's a hard fog game. They ran out some pretty good arms late. And, yeah, it hurts. So we know we got to go out there and let it rip and run the tables here. No, I think if anything, it's easier to bounce back because there's more to fight for in a way. You know, it's a little more real at this point.
Starting point is 01:09:04 It's a little different in May. You know, I think at this point, we know what we have to do. And I think there's lots of energy still in this clubhouse. So we're ready to go tomorrow. The second question asked Michael Soroka was, is it harder to bounce back from losses like this at this point of the season? And as you heard there, his response is that it's easier because you have to. The sense of urgency is there. And I think what he was saying in regards to the early, you know, early losses or early parts of the year,
Starting point is 01:09:35 you just have so much time left in so many games ahead of you, right? That maybe some of those moments kind of sink in and last a little bit longer than they need. to, but now you just can't afford to do that. And this team can't afford to lose any more games. I know they're not going to win out. There's, you'd be a fool to expect them to do that. Just like you would be a fool to expect them to sweep the Padres in San Diego for a playoff spot over them in the last series of the year. Anything is possible, but that seems very unlikely as does winning every baseball game, right? So what they got to focus on is winning the series. And they can do that tomorrow. This is a Marlins team that used a lot of their bullpen plus Pete Fairbanks
Starting point is 01:10:18 has put, I believe, on the injured list after leaving last night's game. So as it stands, their bullpen should be pretty used, pretty taxed, and pretty depleted. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks have a number of strong arms in Jonathan Loisga, Derek Law, some few other guys that didn't even pitch tonight. So they should be in a decent position tomorrow as far as, you know, their pitching staff goes. They have Merrill Kelly on the mound, and really what they need is some length out of Merrill so that this bullpen doesn't have to get overly used again. And what they could really use is just a nice, easy victory to win the series over the Marlins in the finale. Then they have a tough test ahead of them in the Yankees. And honestly, this Rockies
Starting point is 01:11:00 team right now is giving the Padres run for their money. So they are no walk in the park either. But they have to figure out a way to get it done or else I am not going to have to. refund my vacation. I'm not going to have to worry about the damage to my credit. And I will very much be vacation boy unapologetically, Nate Cleveland. And that's not my fault. Damon and I are here almost every single night putting in the work. Right?
Starting point is 01:11:29 I mean, I'm not going to say I'm here every day, but we're here a lot of the season. So it's not because of us. But I will say that, you know, this team is not really. you know, a contender for a World Series champion. It's hard to say that, right? Let's be real. Let's be honest. And let's just hope that whatever they can do is beyond just having their season end here with a fizzle
Starting point is 01:11:58 and not making the playoffs, right? And there's magic. There's magic that can happen to the playoffs. We open up the little button and we hit the magic button and then magic could happen if we get in the playoffs. But I still have a hard time looking. looking at this offense that could not score a second run in nine, 10 innings and think that this is a contender. Nate, you are not allowed to go to bed at all. You have to stay up all night long and you
Starting point is 01:12:28 have to do research on what every single batter is doing with runners in scoring position this season versus previous seasons. I'm sorry about that. You have a lot of homework to do tonight. The rest of you can go to bed now because we're done. We do appreciate you guys joining us. We love you. We thank you for sharing your time with us. We know it's your most valuable commodity, especially on a night like this where you probably, the last thing many of you wanted to do is talk more about Diamondbacks baseball. So we thank you for sharing your time with us. Shout out to Az Katz G for your super chat. He says, Derek Damon, your frustration is a benefit to all of us. We know we're not alone because we always have you guys help us spend our frustrations. And yeah, I apologize if sometimes I get into
Starting point is 01:13:08 arguments with any of you in the chat, except Killer X. I thrive. on that. I enjoy that. I look forward to that. The rest of you, uh, sorry if I ever snap at you. I thought you were going to apologize for getting in arguments with me. Oh, no, I hate you. Oh, I told you that. You and I are playing each other in fantasy football this week. I don't even like, I'm not even trying to be an adult or a bigger person about it. I'm going to kick your backpack on my way out and I might even slash your tires in the parking lot. I'm just saying if that happened, It's not my fault. It's the fault of fantasy football.
Starting point is 01:13:46 It's the fault of Saul Bookman who are organizing this whole thing in the first place. He's a terrible commissioner, by the way, just changing settings and while games are going on. He added an IR spot and didn't tell anybody. Does anybody in the league know we have an IR spot? Because Saul does because he has a guy on the IR. It's scandalous.
Starting point is 01:14:05 It's incredible. He is the worst commissioner I've ever seen in my whole entire life. I have been saying we need an IR spot, but... But to do it without telling anybody just so he could slide his guy that's on the IR into the IR spot? Yeah. It's criminal. We should make Saul go to Waffle House. We should just all agree on that.
Starting point is 01:14:26 Anyway, we got a lot to take on around here. We thank you guys so much for your time. We appreciate you sticking around with us. You can follow us on social if you like more of this nonsense. I'm at cap underscore caveman with a K. This beautiful man over here is at Damon Dogg with a DAWG. and this still doesn't work. And that's just not.
Starting point is 01:14:44 That's that this is the reason why we're not going to make the playoffs. There's nothing to do with the offense. Bark, bark. We genuinely probably can't be good until that changes. I think I'm, okay, I'm taking in home and fixing it tonight. Our shows at PHNX underscore D-Back, but as always all roads lead to at pHNX underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Thank you guys so much for being here with us.
Starting point is 01:15:05 Love you guys. Appreciate you. We'll see you tomorrow for another post game show. no 1240 game tomorrow. I made that mistake. 640 start. So make sure you don't miss out on the baseball game at night.
Starting point is 01:15:17 And then come back here for another post game show when we will be celebrating a series win and not lamenting about this stupid game anymore. But again, appreciate your time. Thank you guys for being here. We'll see you tomorrow. Until then, behave yourselves and remember kids. Baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun
Starting point is 01:15:35 when your offense can actually do something.
