All right. Just getting ready for another Wednesday show, Damon. Another Wednesday show.
It's Tuesday, Derek.
What? Did you? It's, it's, it's, it's, it's, are you correcting me?
I mean, you were wrong. I'm not wrong. What do you mean you're wrong? Are you trying to
correct me? Are you big-timing me? Are you trying to one-up me on the show, Damon? I will toss you
out of the show so fast it'll make your head spin. Well, ski or no ski? Definitely no ski.
for Doug Eddings tonight. Welcome in to Studio K, presented by our friends at Circle K. This is
the PHNX Diamondback Show. We may or may not be live. I'm not excited enough to scream or do
anything after watching the Diamondbacks lose to the Giants by a score of five to three. Is it the
end? Is it a wrap once again? Probably. But we're going to bring in a man that is far more
reasonable than I am to discuss it. First, of course, I'm glad to have you guys here.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of Ph.NX.
The guy on the other side of that sad music is the one, the only, the incomparable Damon Dog himself, Damon Farrell.
And we are thrilled to have you guys here to lament about this particular loss that may or may not be the end of the Diamondbacks playoff hopes once again.
Of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365 in game time.
Make sure to go download that Bet365 app.
It is football season, and it is a fun time to get down on the last.
live in-game betting with Bet365.
Use our code of PHNX-365 when you sign up.
Over at game time,
and use our code of PHNX,
you'll get $20 off your first order.
And of course, like I said,
I bring in a man that's far more reasonable than me
to discuss if this is, in fact,
once again, the end of the Diamondback season.
And no, it's not Damon.
I said a man more reasonable than me.
It is the one, the only,
Jesse Friedman from Snake's territory.
Jesse...
I'm somehow crazier.
I mean, yeah, people don't expect you to be level-headed at all.
And I know we're not going to be very level-headed about Doug Edding's night behind the plate, Jesse,
nor are we going to be level-headed about the Diamondbacks losing this series to the Giants,
including today's game by a score of five to three.
But I did want to just let everybody know.
Again, if you haven't had a chance to sign up, we do have our supporters club, which is up now.
Big fans of the show, big fans of Jesse and I, big fans of Damon Dogg.
Go out there and sign up for the supporters club on YouTube.
channel for five bucks a month. You can get a badge next to your name in the live comments.
We already know some of you have signed up. Thank you guys so much for being supporters.
We're going to have skis in the chat. We're going to have cactus lights in the chat.
Custom emojis are going to lock more. I believe Candice, AZ Katz G. I'm trying to think of some
other people around in and around the show who have signed up to be a supporters club member.
And Derek, we have seen the cactus light emoji. It's real. It's beautiful. It's gorgeous.
It's glorious.
I don't know if we'll get to use it again, Jesse,
because that's typically reserved for wins.
And with the way things are going lately for the Diamondbacks,
they now have three losses in a row.
But again, we appreciate those of you that have signed up so much.
We appreciate you guys that support us.
It's how we keep doing these things that we do.
And I'll throw that out there.
Make sure to support Jesse and Jack over at Snake's territory as well.
They do an excellent job of bringing you some more Diamondbacks content.
and like one of our people said when we unfortunately split,
he selfishly, he gets more feedbacks content, and you do too.
So make sure not to miss Jesse and Jack.
Like I said, if you want a far more reasonable outlook on things,
that's the show to check out,
because we're not happy over here after what we saw tonight, Jesse.
Diamondbacks dropped to 72 and 74 on the season.
Like I said, this is their third loss in a row.
And, I mean, again, you got to give credit where credit is,
do the San Francisco Giants are arguably the best team in Major League Baseball right now.
They're at least the hottest team in Major League Baseball.
They have won 13 of their last 16 games.
Matt Chapman has come back to that team and turn them into superhumans.
And, you know, again, they already do have a pretty formidable lineup overall.
But Chapman's return seemed to be the thing that really sparked that team to play the way that they've been playing.
Yeah, I mean, the Giants are really good right now.
And they've been a very up and down team for quite some time.
I mean, it feels like they're always sort of hovering around 500.
And again, this year, I mean, they basically are hovering around 500.
But they're in this thing, Derek.
I mean, the Diamondbacks had a big opportunity here with the Mets having lost four consecutive games at this point.
They haven't been able to take advantage of that opportunity.
But for the Giants, it's a different story.
They're now sitting two games behind the Mets for that third wildcard spot.
and unfortunately the Diamondbacks were their victims here here tonight.
Well, and not only that, but it's going to be really sad.
It is going to be the Squidward watching SpongeBob and Patrick Meme.
If there are three NL West teams in the playoffs and we are not one of them,
that is going to be a hard pill to swallow.
But the story of the game was it was kind of the Ump show with Doug Eddings out there today, Jesse.
Doug Eddings was all over the place, making some of the worst.
calls we've ever seen in a baseball game in the history of the sport. And as a reminder, this
game has been around for 700 years. Gallin was just put in an awful situation. And again,
he didn't pitch great today. But you can tell, and we've discussed this before, where
Gallin kind of does get, I don't know how to put it, but he gets, he gets knocked off his game
by things going erratically. Not normal things that happen in a baseball game. It doesn't feel like
Zach Gowland gets knocked off his game by giving up hits or walking guys or whatever, at least
if those walks are justified.
But this game started off with one of the most absurd missed calls we have ever really seen
in a baseball game.
And I mean, we also, there were like some calls on the other side that went Robbie Ray's way.
Then later in the game, there were some calls that did not go Robbie Ray's way, that were also some pretty terrible
calls but i think we have damon do we have that uh the screenshot of the one missed call uh this one jesse
this was just ridiculous and i mean this is uh is this the one yeah they're there that that green
ball if you want to call it that down there in the strike zone this was a three two count to helio
ramos and they just botched it he botched it jesse damon's going to blow it up a little bit here to
really get down and see that seventh pitch of the at bat. But it's just egregious how much of a
strike that was. And it's just insane. And I mean, again, I know it was just a walk. I know it wasn't
the home run. I know it wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back or whatever. But this was
the first batter of the game. And you could tell that Zach Allen was just a little visibly upset and
rightfully so. And again, he walks the next batter. And that was Raphael Devers. And then he gives up a three-run,
home run to Willie Adomis. Meanwhile, I think we have the other shot here of another pitch here from
Robbie Ray to Blaze Alexander was up there at the top. It's that pitch six that was called the final
strike. It was a call three strike. I just don't like, I mean, that one is a bit more borderline,
but it still was outside of the zone
and looked even worse on the zone on television,
but like it's just egregious to be calling a strike three call
on a pitch like that that is clearly out of the zone.
But the Zach Gallen call was the worst call of the game.
Robbie Ray also had some bad calls later on at the end of his outing,
and those bad calls kind of led to the Diamondbacks,
getting runners on and scoring runs.
I mean, again, he played such a pivotal part in today's game,
and I hate it so much.
You just, you don't know what Zach Gallin's outing looks like
without him missing that very visible, very obvious strike.
I am a man of emotion, as you may remember,
and I have a hard time getting myself together
after something upsets me.
And like, again, Zach Gallen does seem like the guy
that understands baseball things happen over the context of a baseball game.
But early on in the season, we saw him kind of get shaken by like bad,
like a bad defensive play behind him, you know, like an error being made by Pardomo or something.
And then you can just see that he kind of like almost gives up. Like you can see his body language
changes and you can just see he's just not in it anymore. And then the subsequent results aren't great.
And that's what we saw today with that home run he allowed to Willie Adomas.
I mean, there's no question that that that call on Ramos to start the game was terrible.
and Zach Allen definitely has a right to be upset about it.
At the same time, you know, as Killer X just mentioned in the chat,
like, it's sort of part of the game.
I mean, I don't want to make excuses for Doug Edding.
It's a very poorly umpired game.
But as you pointed out, I mean, he did not,
it's not like all of Doug Edding's bad calls just favored the Giants.
There were some that favored the Diamondbacks as well.
I think there were probably more.
that favored the Giants, then favored the Diamondbacks.
If I had to guess, it'll be interesting what the scorecard, the Ump score card says
and we get that tomorrow.
But ultimately, I mean, it is part of the game that you have to be able to overcome those
situations.
And Zach Allen didn't do that.
I mean, he had Raphael Devers, the very next batter, one, two.
And he just threw three straight balls that were, frankly, kind of uncompetitive pitches.
And he winds up losing Devers.
And then, of course, he makes a mistake to Will.
Adomis and, you know, it's a three nothing game, just a few batters in. So I think that two things
can be true. Doug Eddings did a marion. umpired a pretty miserable game tonight, but the
diamond backs have to be able to respond better than they did. Very true. And I think, again,
the other part of this is that the giants are playing exceptionally good baseball right now.
So you can't make mistakes like that. You can't let yourself slip out of it because next thing,
you know, you're down three to nothing in the first inning. And quite frankly, Gallen didn't
pitch that bad tonight. His, you know, it was that first inning that he really pitched poorly. And,
and again, I'm not going to be like, oh, if you take that first inning out. No, the first inning was bad.
And it put them in enough of a hole that this team, you know, wasn't able to answer offensively
against Robbie Ray and what he was doing on the mound tonight. But again, he was able to kind of get
things back on track and not let it get completely out of control. But the Patrick Bailey home run,
that one was, that's something. What does he have five home runs this season, Damon? And two of them
are against the Diamondbacks now. Nothing grosser in the world, Derek. I mean, him and Gabby Moreno
came up at the same time. So you know, naturally, that means that I have to have an internet agenda against
Patrick Bailey. And tonight and yesterday was a bad couple of nights for that agenda. Yeah. I mean,
The guy stinks at the plate.
And you're letting him hit bombs against you.
It stinks.
He kind of murders the Diamondbacks in general.
I mean, he came into this game with a career 810 OPS against the Diamondbacks,
even though his career OPS overall is 620.
So this just sort of furthered the narrative of Patrick Bailey having his way with the Diamondbacks.
That's just the worst thing I've ever heard, Jesse.
Hold on.
I got to take a moment here because Jesse first,
we have a new rule here where we don't really acknowledge killer rex.
We definitely don't agree with killer X.
He's a known Tori Lovolo apologist.
And he also used a pro wrestling reference against me right now.
And he wants me, he demanded that I acknowledge him as his tribal chief.
So you know what that means, Damon.
It's our favorite time of the show where we toss killer wrecks out of here.
Get him out of here.
Get him out of the chat.
Ban him for the rest of the show.
All right.
but it has to be done. Sorry, Jesse. Gallen had his four steam working the night, though. He was confident in it. That's kind of what got him a little bit back on track there. He threw it 47% of the outing. He had four whiffs on it. But the changeup was really his good out pitch there working well in combination with his fastball. Got seven whiffs on the changeup tonight, Jesse. And it was just, again, one of those nights where Gallen didn't look particularly.
bad the rest of the
outing but unfortunately the damage was already
done early there and
being down you know
three runs with the way the offense
performed again what that that was
enough that Imanbacks couldn't really
overcome a three run deficit let alone
the other two runs that Gallin gave up in his
six and two thirds innings pitch
am I really supposed to toss
killer regs for
a wrestling reference? I'm tossing
killer rex whenever I want to now
seems like that
didn't warrant it. I don't care. I don't. All right. Well, I mean, we'll confer later,
Damon, but I'll have to kick you off the show if you don't kick Killer Rex off the show when I
tell you to. I'm just going to, well, because Doug Eddings, you know, again, that was the thing
that I really had a problem with with Doug Eddings was not necessarily what was going on between
him and the Diamondbacks, but I honestly had a problem with what Doug Eddings was doing to
Robbie Ray. He not only was making some pretty terrible calls tonight, but he was literally,
trying to instigate something with Robbie Ray.
He was coming out there, taking his mask off, looking for a fight.
You know, like, that's just so weird to me that you can be both wrong several times
over the course of the night as an own plate umpire and also trying to instigate stuff
with a pitcher who is mad at you, but he's not like showing you up.
He's like mumbling stuff under his breath and he's like just being mad because your calls are bad.
and like i don't know it's kind of a crazy thing it it moves me that much further in the direction of
just wanting to eliminate the home plate umpire being the person that calls balls and strikes back
there yeah i mean dug eddings is uh this this is kind of what he does right i don't think this is
the first time we've seen this sort of behavior from him he's generally not you know not the best
home played umpire and he also i don't want to say is confrontational but
he's he's not afraid to kind of get into it a little bit.
So that's just a bad combination when an umpire is just not very good at doing their job.
And on top of that also, you know, is is kind of ready for battle, you know,
with some of these pitchers and hitters.
It's it's really not what baseball is, uh, is meant to be about.
I love when Jesse like goes like professional, you know, like this guy's awful.
this guy stinks and he's like when you're not very good at your job well and that's the thing that's
weird about it the entire umpire relationship and such me and damon are going to do a special
debacks after dark just to scream about Doug eddings later but uh we'll get into it and a big part of
what we want to scream about is the idea here that you know the the concept of an umpire after
what we've seen in the NFL with you know high definition cameras being able to measure
first downs better than the chain gang can and having technology like that in place.
There's no reason why,
when we've already seen the ABS system and what it could do,
to just completely eliminate,
completely eliminate the human element out of balls and strikes being called,
and just straight up go with what actually happens.
I know people like the human element.
I get that.
But overall, it's crazy to me because I think what we want more than anything is accuracy.
And honestly, it feels like as silly as it is,
sports betting is making accuracy be more important than ever because we want things to be fair.
We don't want it just to be eyeballed by a guy who made a bad call that we find out later
when we go back and review it and look at it and replay that he made the wrong call.
We want to get the call right.
And I mean, we're even leaning in that direction.
I think, again, like I said tonight with Robbie Ray, he was pissing me off because he was
starting to fight with Robbie Ray.
And I don't care.
I wanted Robbie Ray thrown out of the game.
I wanted Robbie Ray to not be out there shoving a guy.
against the Diamondbacks like he was.
I wanted the Home Flight umpire to be disrupting him.
I just felt in the moment like it was so wrong.
It was just so crazy to see it happening.
But again, the Diamondbacks really had a couple of opportunities there to take advantage of that whole situation.
But they didn't.
And they kind of kept their offense limited in this one.
Meanwhile, Zach Gallen, like I said, six and two thirds innings pitched, five hits, five-erd runs, three walks, three-k.
Damon, do we have Gallin's pitch chart?
All right.
Let's take a look at that.
This is how Gallen was spreading things around.
And as you can see, he was really spreading it around, Jesse.
I mean, probably the biggest problem with his night was you're not seeing this kind of clustered there more in the strike zone.
He wasn't really competitive with some of his knuckle curve pitches, wasn't really getting a lot of whiffs on anything besides the changeup and the fastball.
Yeah, I think the fact.
fastball, you just see a lot of horizontal misses there. And those don't tend to be very effective.
If you throw a fastball, you know, way outside or way inside on a hitter, it's generally not going to
entice them to chase. And then to your point, yeah, the curveball, the Giants, I mean, to their credit,
I think did a pretty good job laying off that pitch. We do see Gallen get whiffs on curveballs that are well
below the zone at times. I mean, that can be an effective pitch for him, but not in this game.
The Giants only chased a few of those knuckle curves. And of course, Gowan also left to one in a
pretty bad spot. And Patrick Bailey hit it a pretty long way. I think we had, if you could
roll back there a little bit, Damon. Benjamin Hunley says enough of apologizing for Zagallon. He's been
one of the worst pitchers in baseball. Not actually. Lately, Zach Gallen's actually been pretty good,
in fact. I mean, this was a bad outing, and it's a bad outing at a time when the Diamondbacks
really needed him to be good. And he wasn't. I will agree with everything you said, Jesse, honestly.
Like, it does bother me that Zach Gallen does at times have his worst moments after things in a
baseball game don't go his way. And not, and again, that sounds like such a spoiled brat kind of thing.
I just mean, like, Gallen has something that happens that disrupts, you know,
the way the inning should have gone, you know, two outs and an error is made,
and the next thing you know, gallon allows like three more hits in the inning and two runs
to score and has to throw, you know, 26 more pitches.
Like, we've seen that in a gallon outing before.
And it felt like tonight, you know, you just saw him kind of do the, like, not too much body
language, but like the disappointing body language.
He wasn't shouting at the umpire like Robbie Ray was.
He was just being bummed out by the fact that he was bad at his job.
And like it just kind of led to what we saw there early.
Overall, though, I do think Gallin has been pretty good lately.
It's just, again, like I said, today on a very important day, he was not there,
especially in the first inning.
I mean, I think it's fair to say that Gallin has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball
overall this season.
I mean, out of qualified starters, he has the ninth highest ERA at 4.84.
So he has pitched much.
much, much better lately, but the full body of work hasn't been good. And I wonder if that just
kind of compounds an umpire mistake, like the one we saw in the first inning, where if you're
Zach Gallen and you just haven't had the kind of season that you're used to having, it probably
just creates even more frustration when you have a call like that go against you. You know,
you just feel like nothing is going your way this year. And that just sort of adds to the pile of
things that have gone against Gallin.
So, I mean, to his credit, like, he didn't bounce back in the moment, right?
I mean, he did walk the next hitter and then give up a three-run home run.
But as we were saying earlier, he did manage to pitch into the seventh inning.
I mean, he gave the Diamondbacks some length.
He kept them in the game, relatively speaking.
But sometimes you lose a game after the first few batters.
And the Diamondbacks only scored three runs, of course, the entire night.
So unfortunately, that big mistake that he made there in the first inning to Willie Adomas, coupled with the mistake that Doug Eddings made behind the plate, you know, the game was essentially decided just there in that first inning.
Well, Gallen did have three strikeouts.
That's it today, even though he did have so many whiffs.
And that's kind of wild in itself.
You know, Gallen had 11 swings and misses and had three strikeouts.
So again, Circle K, thank you for your, for lighten up that strikeout meter.
And don't forget, with every K you win at Circle K, Tech Strike to 31310 to start saving right now on fuel, food, and drinks after every Dback's home game.
Tonight, you still would have walked away with a free any size pull or pop if this was a home game.
So meanwhile, the bullpen at least did get a little rest.
John Curtis got the entire bulk of the work tonight and did a great job.
one in the third inning pitch damon uh 2k and and there he is he's he's always there he's always
ready jesse he's just kind of lurking yeah he's just always lurking yeah he's just always lurking and uh hi john
good job tonight 2k and an inning in the third pitch got out of that inning uh for gallon there but
uh just overall kind of a depressing loss here we're going to talk about the offense and what they
were able to do against robbie ray uh but overall jesse i know a lot of people even after last
We're ready to be like, well, that's it.
It's over.
People, fans at this point, pretty much expect this team to sweep every series between now and the end in order to get to the playoffs.
Or if they don't do that, it's a complete bust.
However, it is a big deal to lose two out of three here to the Giants.
And again, this Giants team is very, very hot.
And the Diamondbacks have three more games against them not too long from now.
So I think that the outlook doesn't look great, especially with how well they're playing,
how many games we have against them, and how little time the snakes have to make up ground
against the teams ahead of them.
The Diamondbacks just haven't been able to stop losing streaks.
You know, the best teams in the league, you drop a game, it is what it is, but you find a way
to bounce back the next day, at least a decent portion of the time.
And lately, this team just hasn't been able to do that.
I mean, the last time the Diamondbacks lost just one game at a time and then bounced back and won the next game was August 11th.
Other than that, we've had a four-game losing streak from August 15th to 18th.
There was a three-game losing streak from the 24th to the 26.
A shorter two-game losing streak, August 31st and September 1st.
And then now we find ourselves in the middle of a three-game losing streak after the Diamondbacks gotten really hot and seemed to actually position themselves fairly,
well. I mean, they certainly gave themselves a shot in the wild card race.
And somehow, Derek, they're still not totally, totally dead in that regard.
I mean, they're four and a half games out. But they haven't taken advantage of this golden
opportunity where the Mets have really come back down to Earth. I mean, the Mets have lost four
games in a row. And we've been saying for a while, even if the standings don't look great,
if somehow at some point the Mets lose four in a row and the D-Backs,
win four in a row, then suddenly those teams are basically neck and neck.
And the debacks got what they needed from the Mets and that they are in a four game losing
streak, but now the D-backs have lost three games in a row themselves.
And they've only made up one game in that span.
And, you know, instead of five and a half games, we're looking at four and a half games
out of that third wildcard spot, which is within striking distance, but you're also just
running out of opportunities here.
I mean, the Diamondbacks at this point only have 16 games left in the season.
season. And they also have the second hardest remaining strength of schedule behind the Cardinals
who have a basically opponent, remaining opponent record or winning percentage of 556.
Diamondbacks remaining opponent winning percentage is 525 tied with the twins. Then you got the
Red So Diamondbacks still have a lot of tough opponents ahead of them, which makes this
even harder to make up that ground. But we are going to take a quick,
break on the other side of this break we're going to talk more about the offense struggling against
Robbie Ray today and I'm also probably going to scream a little bit more about Doug Eddings. I don't know
I might be done or I might just reserve what I have left for debacks after dark. So don't you go anywhere
you're watching the PHA next time and back show. Damon, what time is it? Do you know what's always game
time? It's always game time and that's because game time is always ready for you to come and purchase
last minute tickets. It doesn't matter how close it is to the show. You're going to get 60% off.
whether you're looking to save on concerts,
sporting events, more.
They got you covered over there in just a few taps,
and especially during football season,
it is an incredible time to get your tickets over at game time.

All right.
Well, Jesse, the offense got a very slow start today against Robbie Ray.
Pardomo continues to just put together some amazing at-bats, no matter what the case is.
Damon and I were talking about it, but it's funny.
I don't think I've ever felt this way about a baseball player where they go down
0 and 2 in the count.
And I'm like, all right, now the at-bats started.
Now is when the real game begins.
And that's because Pardomo not only loves being down 0 and 2, he not only talks about
loving being down 02 in the count, but he proves it because it really does feel like
where he naturally starts.
you know, putting together some, you know, fouling off some balls,
catching up with the pitcher's timing,
and really just causing that pitch count to go up.
It really didn't feel like a lot of batters were doing that today against Robbie Ray.
But the next thing, you know, you found Robbie Ray, you know,
kind of struggling to make it there through the fifth inning and get out of it.
So they did eventually do a good job,
and it's not hard to drive the pitch count up against Robbie Ray.
But Pardomo was the main culprit today getting it done.
I mean, I don't know if I would say it's not hard to drive up the pitch count against Robbie Ray when, you remember the last time the Diamondbacks face?
Yeah, I remember because we were there. It was during the pool party, Jesse. It was during the pool party. We had to be present hanging out doing a takeover, having a great time, but not having a very good time because not only did Shane bring that weird baby, but we also had to deal with Robbie Ray just absolutely dominating the debacks that day.
So you're right about that. Tusha.
Yeah, I was 102 pitches in a complete game.
Pretty wild stuff.
But, yeah, I mean, obviously Robbie does have a larger history of having his pitch count drive up pretty significantly.
We certainly saw that in his time with the Diamondbacks less so since then, but it continues to be an issue for him at times.
But, yeah, I mean, Geraldo Pridomo, the at-bats are always going to be quality.
he saw 26 pitches today in his four plate appearances, a 10 pitch walk in that first inning,
which did, to your point, started 02, and then he winds up seeing eight more pitches and drawing a walk.
Definitely one of the most fun things to watch if you're a Diamondbacks fan.
And he's had an awesome season.
I mean, you know, he's come back down to Earth here over the past few weeks,
but he reached base three times in this game.
And the Diamondbacks certainly did not lose this one because, you know,
Perdomo didn't find his way on base enough.
That was that was not the issue tonight.
Well, Tim Tawa also had himself a nice day.
He was recently called up before Monday's game.
And he got the scoring starting started there in the fifth inning with the lead off double.
And then he scored on an RBI double by one Jordan Lawler, who then stole third base and scored subsequently on a, I believe, a Jorge Barrosa sackfly.
and just again,
Diamondback started to put something together
and things started to look nice.
They started to catch up a little bit.
I think that Lee was 4 to 2 at the time.
And then the Patrick Bailey home run happened.
And that,
I don't know why,
but even just pushing it back up to a three run lead
felt like that was enough
with the way that the offense was operating
and knowing that the Giants have
the second best bullpen ERA in all of baseball.
Like you just felt,
was one of my kind of keys to the series. You felt like they weren't going to be able to
score early against the starters, which was difficult going up against Logan Webb and Robbie
Ray, that they weren't going to be able to get the job done. They did put up some runs on Logan
Webb early, but they couldn't get it up on Robbie Ray. They did knock him out fairly early, though,
and they didn't allow him to do to them what he did last time. So that was nice. Then in the sixth
inning there, Geraldo Pridomo led it off with a single, and then he scored on an Ildomaro Bargis
RBI single, but another big missed opportunity there.
Tim Tawa did have a good day. He got to double himself, but he struck out swinging there in a
huge opportunity with runners on second and third with just one out. And that just kind of
felt like at the time, that was that was going to, that was the offense fizzling out.
And it ended up being that because they really didn't put together any more opportunities
the rest of the game. I think it's also noteworthy that Cote and Corbyn-Carrot
went 0 for 9 in this game.
And given the state of this roster right now, I mean, the debacks are heavily dependent
on those two players to be able to produce offensively.
And if they're going to go over 9, you know, it's just going to be really hard for them
to put up a big number.
The rest of the team went 8 for 24, which is pretty good.
But yeah, Corbyn and Kattel just were not able to deliver anything today.
Corbin, of course, was also hitless in the game yesterday.
and then Catelle has just been on kind of a larger slump here for,
I mean, you could really go back a couple months at this point
where there have been times where he's gotten hot just briefly,
but his OPS dropped below 900 today for the first time
in I think the vast majority of the season.
I don't really recall the last time Cotel's OPS started with an 8.
So, yeah, this team needs a lot from those guys,
and if they're going to somehow find a way,
to make a run here in these final few weeks,
it's probably going to involve Cotel Marte getting hot again
and Corby and large,
Corbyn's played pretty well lately,
but him getting hot once again as well
and finishing this year strong.
Yeah, you're not wrong.
If you go to about the midpoint of August to now,
Cattel's numbers aren't very good at all.
This dates back to August 7th.
17th. He has a 233 batting average with a 337 on base percentage and a 342 slug for a 680 OPS. And that's in his last 20 games.
Yeah, that sounds about right. There just hasn't, there's been no power. It's been kind of strange. You know, usually if Kattel has a rough skid, then maybe he's not getting on base as much as you'd like, but he's still finding the gap. He's still hitting home runs.
But, you know, right now it feels like unless Catelle is facing the Texas Rangers, he's just not going to hit the ball over the fence, right?
He has four home runs against the Texas Rangers in the past couple of months.
But his previous home run before that was back on August 2nd out in Sacramento, which is right after the trade deadline, right?
So it's been a weird, a weird month and a half here for Catelle offensively.
And yes, love y'all on the chat.
So at least he gave belt to ass to the Rangers.
Yes, at least he did that.
I will say, though, that it does feel like, again, maybe that public scrutiny that he faced is hanging over his head.
And this, once again, is, it goes back to mental toughness similar to the situation with Zach Gallen, right?
I don't know if that's what I'm calling into question here.
But I'm just saying, like, if Cattel, like, takes days off when he feels he needs days off.
and he gets those days off granted to him because he's the superstar that he is.
Maybe he doesn't feel like he can ask for days off anymore based on the, like, on the way things have gone.
It's not to say he hasn't received days off.
I don't know.
I'm just making excuses now.
But I'm just saying it does feel like he needs to be unplugged and plugged back in.
Corby Carroll did almost make a pretty good defensive play there.
He almost got down another runner at home in the fourth inning.
But his throw was just a little too late.
I believe Bob Brenley on the broadcast brought up the fact that he kind of like got under the ball a little too early
instead of being able to get there with his momentum kind of behind him as he caught the ball to make the throw.
He kind of just waited for it underneath it and then caught it and made that throw.
And it was just, just, I mean, just too late to get Matt Chapman at home.
And that scored the giant's fourth run of the game.
Also credit to Barrosa, he made a pretty damn good catch on Willie Adomas to fly out.
and end the fifth. And then Blaze Alexander, once again, making some good defensive plays
over at third base robbed Casey Schmidt to lead off the seventh inning. So good defensive plays
in this one, just really not enough offense. And unfortunately, Zach Gallen just kind of stunk
in the first inning that those two things combined seem to be enough to not to lead to this loss.
I do think we have to give a shout out to Tim Bogar.
I don't know if you noticed this, Derek, but in the top of the fifth inning,
Yildemarovar Vargas did an RBI single.
Geraldo Pardtomo scored from second.
And in Bogart, new Diamondback's third base coach, he sent Pardomo.
And in the moment, I was like, he's crazy.
Like, I mean, this ball was hit hard.
Heliot Ramos has a pretty strong arm in left field.
And he fielded the ball, and he just sort of airmailed it over Patrick Bailey's head.
And Perdomo wound up being.
safe. So I mean, maybe it was kind of an overly aggressive send in that spot by Bogar,
but it worked. So I guess we, I guess we should give credit where our credit is due.
Did he send Lawler as well? Because that throw by Lee was bad. And he should have been out at
home too, but the throw was bad. And yeah, and Lawler scored, right? And so like, yeah, again,
I don't know if those, like if those go a different way, I'm sure there's a lot of people in
chat screaming for Bogar's head, you know, already. But yeah, he did did judge those well. And again,
maybe that's, maybe that's checking the scouting report. Maybe that's knowing what those guys are
going to do out there. I don't really know. I really don't know what allowed him to make those calls
on those plays that looked like the runners were going to be out otherwise. But great job there.
Blaze Alexander, by the way, two for four today. So like you said, the rest of the lineup contributed.
just really not from the superstars other than Geraldo Perdomo,
who was one for two with a run scored and two walks.
But we got to give Kingsnake to somebody.
I'm not giving it to Jesse.
And I'm definitely not giving it to Jesse Jr.
Because he's had such a big head since he's been hanging out
in the Diamondbacks clubhouse and paling around with Blaze Alexander.
So we're going to give the Kingsnake to Jordan Lawler.
He was one for two in this game.
He had a double.
He scored one of the Diamondbacks three runs.
he also scored a run himself and then he also had a stolen base.
So just a good overall performance from Jordan and you can really feel like he is starting to put things together.
It's slow.
It's not quite the overnight like, you know, sudden success that you could say Blaze Alexander had,
even though Blaze is, you know, Blaise's, his offense is still coming around too.
He's not been, you know, the hottest hitter on the team.
But still, this is, this is nice.
to see especially considering that right now you know these guys are contributing and helping this
team when they're not the reason they're they're losing the game and it was another good uh just overall
performance by both both of those youngsters out there today yeah i mean for for lawler in his past
five games now which i know is a very very small sample size but in his last five games
James Lawler is five for 13 with three doubles, three RBI, and two stolen bases.
And I think ever since you saw Lawler get his first hit of this season at the beginning of
that five-game stretch, his batts have just looked a lot better.
He looks a lot more comfortable and confident in the box.
He only has two strikeouts in those five games.
And I know the Diamondbacks are sort of protecting him against right-handed pitching.
looks in the chat and some people are not exactly on board with that
would maybe like to see Lawler just face both lefties and righties from here on out
but the abats have looked a lot better Derek I think we're starting to see
Jordan Lawler you know truly show off his skill set
and get past maybe the mental hurdle of not having a base hit this season
well we are going to take a look at the numbers from this series on the other side of
this break we're going to talk a little bit more about Jordan Lawler and we're also
I'm going to see if we can get Jesse
to give us any more hope
about what is going on
with the N hell west and the wild card.
So don't you go anywhere? You're watching the P.H.N.X. Diamondback

Jesse.
Get Jesse in here.
Fun fact.
My new nickname by Tori is just Circle K.
Oh, wow.
He just looks at me and called me Circle K.
He's like Circle K.
I don't know.
Like, I don't know if he's like bringing up the name of the store where he sees my dumb
face when he's filling up with gas in the middle of the night.
Or if it's just a fun nickname for Tori to call me Circle K.
But I'm going to call me Circle K.
but I'm going to start calling him, you know,
Sal here pretty soon if he doesn't stop.
But let's take a look at the numbers from this game
presented by our friends at Desert Financial Credit Union.
Diamondbacks lose this one by a score 5 to 3.
They actually outhit the Giants 8 to 5.
The Diamondbacks were 2 for 9
with runners in scoring position
where the Giants were just 2 for 2.
Extra base hits, the Diamondbacks had 2.
The Giants a little bit more impactful had 3,
and two of theirs were home.
runs and then the expected batting average a push basically 233 for the debacks
231 for the giants uh damon killer x is bringing up that i'm on a nickname basis now with
tory i mean have we not talked about going over there for sunday dinner every sunday like i mean
of course i'm on a nickname basis if i'm going over there for sunday dinner me and tori have a
secret handshake isn't tory a nickname um for tory yeah i mean it's i call him sal or sal
But isn't Tori a nickname for Salvatore?
Yes, technically.
So we all call him by his nickname.
I guess.
So we're all on a nickname basis with Tori Lavaa.
Now you're just getting into the semantics of what people choose to go by.
I don't know.
Yeah, I don't know if that's really nickname status.
Like that's just.
It's like if your name's William and you go by Bill, right?
Like that's not.
Yeah, right.
I'm pretty sure the definition of a nickname is because of Nicholas to Nick.
And it's literally called a nickname.
Like, like that's like what you're going to be.
go by stuff into it i don't like this that's old-timey nicknames damon where this is this is
2025 i mean there are like there are like we call guys big dumper okay there are nicknames that
only close friends know versus nicknames that everybody uses and knows yeah i i think that's sort
of what we're getting at like tory is a nickname in a different in a much different way than you know
having like a name that you that you call a specific person that you know well well uh
I mean, the conversation.
I'm glad we're having this discussion.
Yeah, I was going to say the conversation truly proves that this season is in fact over.
I think that's the message we were trying to get to.
It's never been more over than that exact conversation.
And guys, if we're doing this again next year, that means we miss the playoffs, unfortunately.
Yeah, for sure.
But let's take a look at the N-Hell West standings and see exactly where the Diamondback sit.
Like Jesse said, because the Mets keep losing, the Diamondback situation,
doesn't get worse. It just stays the same. It's just the giants that have vastly improved their
station in this situation. The Dodgers sit at the top of the division at 81 and 64. Padres in second
at 79 and 66. They are two games back in the division, three games up in the wild card. Then we have
the giants who are 74 and 71 and again have just been playing the best baseball, not just in the
national league, but in all of baseball, you could argue. They are seven back in the division.
two games back in the wild card.
Our beloved Diamondbacks now sit two games under 500 at 72 and 74.
And they are nine and a half back in the division, four and a half back in the wild card.
Jesse, I don't know.
I mean, again, I still hold out hope.
I would have said at this point a few weeks ago,
if they could get less than five games back,
that you never know what can happen, right?
And again, if things can swing now in the Diamondbacks favor,
if they can get hot, you know,
when they play the Giants again, they could potentially make up ground and reverse this a little bit.
So it's not like they are dead in the water.
It just feels like, you know, again, this is, this doesn't feel like a Giants team that is going to be easy to be.
Not just in the finale with Eduardo Rodriguez on the mountain, but again, in a few, you know, in like a week when we have to play them at Chase Field, right?
So it just, it doesn't feel like the best situation overall for the Diamondbacks.
And even outside of that, with the exception of the twins, you have the Dodgers, the Phillies, and the Padres left on the schedule.
So again, if the Diamondbacks somehow, some way find themselves in the postseason when all this is said and done, there is no way you can say they didn't earn it here over this last daunting stretch.
I think they can lose another game, Derek, but.
We've reached the point where I'm not totally sure how many more games they can lose.
I mean, if they were to win out, right, win 16 consecutive games doesn't seem very likely,
they would be 88 and 74.
And given the current trend, I think you'd feel pretty comfortable.
You know, the Mets are only seven games over 500 right now.
Like 88 and 74 probably gets you in.
But, you know, say the Diamondbacks lose two games.
then you're finishing at 86 and 76.
And the Mets are seven games over 500 right now.
And, you know, there's a few other teams that aren't too far behind them.
I think there's a decent chance that gets you in, but I don't know.
And at that point, you're talking about only losing two out of your final 16 games.
You know, are the debacks really going to go 14 and two the rest of the way?
So, yeah, four and a half is still, you know, it's not as big of a number as you might fear it would be.
But with how few games we still have left on the schedule,
we're kind of heading back toward miracle, miracle territory.
And the other thing that really hurts is that the Padres have won some games here
in the last few days.
And I think the Padres were always going to be the easier route for the debacks
because they finished the season with three games head-to-head against San Diego.
So you could have gone into that final weekend series down three games
and you'd still have a shot if you swept the series.
But now the debacks are seven and a half behind the Padres.
And with 16 games to go, I mean, that's pretty much impossible to make up that much ground.
Here we are giving people hope.
Here we are being realistic, but also saying it's not over.
And our chat, Jesse, is just basically like, look at these two delusional losers over here.
holding on to hope, right?
We, look, I mean, I don't know what I just said is all that outful.
No, it's not.
That's what I'm saying.
Like, we're being realistic.
But it's in all honesty, it's like a lot of things in sports, right?
Until until the, until the W and the L have been assigned to one team and another, until the
Diamondbacks have a little skull and crossbones next to their team name on baseball reference,
they're still alive.
Are the odds in their favor?
Absolutely not.
They have a sub 2% chance
of making the playoffs currently after this.
But at the same time, they're still in it.
And it's still like, I think overall,
the one thing you can give them credit for
is still somehow being relevant
with all of the things that they have had to happen to them this season
on September 9th.
I don't know if everybody would consider them to be relevant,
but we do.
I mean, at least on September 7th,
they were relevant.
People were talking about, you know,
look at here,
here comes this Diamondbacks team.
Alex Cora was giving him a lot of credit after that Boston Red Sox series.
So again, it's still fairly impressive that they've made us believe once again
that they've given us this hope once again.
But I do feel like after this series loss that hope has gone out the window.
And that's my true feeling.
Now, since June, there has been 16 cases where I have said that the season was indeed over.
So I maybe jump to that conclusion fairly quickly at times, but I do feel like this one is pretty much it.
But overall, you got to be impressed with, like I said, the way that they played since the trade deadline and especially the way they played to start this month, which was a very difficult schedule against some good opponents.
But, you know, this is going to be a hard one to overcome.
And again, the thing that it feels like the more, it's not even the Dodgers or the Padres or the, you know, Phillies that bother me.
It's honestly the fact that we have to play four more games still against this Giants team.
And it just seems like a very tough team to beat.
But Nicholas Dalton in the chat says, I didn't hear no bell.
And damn it, I didn't hear a bell either.
So we're still fighting.
We're going to take a quick break.
On the other side of this break, I'm going to get mushy with Jesse.
and we're going to talk about today being our four-year anniversary around here at PHNX Sports.

You know that meme?
We're the goats, right?
We're the goats and like new guys are trying to come in and take over our spot.
But we'll always be held in eye regard.
And yes, today is the four-year anniversary.
of PHNX sports existing while we have been through some ups and some definite downs.
I just wanted to take a moment.
I'm glad you're here because this whole thing was made very special.
And Jesse, you obviously are a huge part of it.
I know we're both proud about what this place has become.
But overall, it's been quite a ride.
And I'm just thankful that you and I still get to do this together.
even if it's just once a week, but very thankful that you and I are still riding together to
talk about baseball.
Yeah, absolutely.
It's been fun getting to hop on here every once in a while for the past few months.
And yeah, I mean, thinking back to four years ago, Derek, I mean, little, little did we know
on September 9th of 2021 that we'd be covering a World Series together just a couple years later.
No, we did not think that was in the cards.
did not really inspire any confidence.
This podcast started at a pretty abysmal time,
pretty much the most abysmal time in franchise history.
And somehow things turned around pretty quick.
It was quite a ride.
That's for sure.
Well, we helped rebound this entire franchise.
Let's not diminish our role in this World Series run.
Because if we wouldn't have deemed that team a wagon, Jesse,
they might not have ever gone on the role that they went on.
So it was a whole lot of fun.
And definitely had a lot of fun with all of these guys around here.
It's been an incredible four years.
And like I said, hasn't always been easy.
We haven't always made the best, at least one of us here on screen,
hasn't always made the best choices,
especially when deciding to take his shirt off
or drink champagne on this show.
We don't need to name names on.
who specifically that was, but it's also, it's also odd because the, the, the, it was a weird thing
to count, Jesse, but we are coming up on our 1,000th episode of the H&X Diamondbacks podcast.
So I don't know how.
I don't really know how, but a thousand episodes, who would have thunk it?
So, big things to celebrate, of course, but for the Diamondbacks, not much to celebrate.
Again, this might be the end of their season.
And at least, again, as somebody that does do a podcast about this team, speaking for both of us,
I am glad that they were at least able to give us this little ride here at the end after the trade deadline.
And, you know, kind of do what most people didn't think that they could do, which was stay relevant and keep themselves in the hunt for the playoffs.
but ultimately it was too much ground to make up, I think.
And that was kind of the deal with today's game.
It's almost a metaphor for the season.
Like they just got behind too much early in this one,
tried to be scrappy and get their way back in it.
But unfortunately, squandered some opportunities and come up just short.
Yeah, I mean, I think if you're looking for hope for this team,
it's not as much hope for the playoffs at this point.
But there is some hope that I think come.
with the fact that the team has played pretty well since the trade deadline. I mean, they're still
above 500 since then. Given the pieces that they still have and really the pieces that they lost
at the deadline, it's impressive that they've managed to stay in this thing as long as they have.
I mean, they were above 500 just a few days ago, right? I mean, even that is an achievement that I
really didn't expect them to reach in the second half at all. So there have been some good things
and maybe we'll see some more good things here in these last few weeks from guys like Blaze Alexander and Jordan Lawler and Tim Tawa, you know, players who could be big contributors on next year's team.
Well, Jacob Franklin is going to be mad at me because I did not throw it to overtime.
They'll let people know we were going over an hour.
That's my bad, Jacob Franklin.
We're going to be better.
We're going to be better at that.
We're going to try next season.
Next season will be better.
Yeah, next season will be better.
We're going to make some improvements.
we're going to get some experience the rest of this year.
But we're going to make sure that we start hitting that overtime marker at the 5830 mark,
regardless of where we're at in the show.
But sometimes the conversation is too compelling,
and it's always too compelling when Jesse Friedman is here.
So, sir, I thank you for your time.
Appreciate you.
You guys do a wonderful job over there at Snake's Territory,
so keep up the fine work.
Tell Jack, I miss him, and that his friendship is also very dear to me.
And also, I don't, I don't know if Jack's going to like this, but we got our guy, Alex,
working for us now over here riding for the Cardinals.
Alex does some incredible work for Jack over there at SI or Diamondbacks on Sports Illustrated.
And yeah, as much as nobody wants it, we're going to inevitably steal him over here to come talk some baseball with us as well.
So don't tell Jack that part, though.
He'll be mad.
Anyway.
Alex is a wildcat as well.
I don't know if you knew that there.
Yeah, no, I mean, there's a lot of, there's a lot of, we're going to have Alex on a lot of shows
once we, once we figure out a way to convince him to do that.
Shane makes a great point.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, and do become a supporter so we can spam Jesse Jr. emojis.
And hopefully we'll get to use the cactus light emojis.
We're definitely using some ski emojis for sure.
But Jesse Jr. becoming an emoji is a must, is a must.
B says thunderstick rules.
And I definitely agree with that.
So make sure to follow Jesse.

a little bit earlier on that one.
So make sure to join us for that.
Until then, have yourselves a lovely evening.
We thank you not only for being here tonight,
but thank you for being here for the last four years.
It truly does mean the world to us.
And I think if there's anything Jesse and I are truly proud of
when it comes to the time doing this show together,
is this community that we've built.
You guys have been awesome.
This was a community that Jesse and I can both attest to
did not really exist in this same way
when we were covering this Diamondbacks team five years ago,
six years ago.
So it's really cool to see this community come together
the way it has and for us to play any part in that.
So we appreciate you guys so much
for being a part of our community with us.
Thank you again for your time.
We'll see you tomorrow.
Until then, behave yourselves and remember kids.
Baseball is fun, but at some point, you have to finally admit it's over.
