Are the answer backs back?
The Diamondbacks win a game when trailing by six or more runs in the ninth inning for the first time in franchise history.
I think that deserves the cactus light being lit up.
Don't you go anywhere?
We're talking about this comeback rally right now in 30 seconds.
The edition of the VHNX Diamond Back Show.
And I don't even know what the hell we just saw.
But welcome in.
So glad to have you guys here.
My name, of course, is Derek Monti, occasionally known as your mayor.
P-H-N-X. We got, again, the human rabbit's foot known as Damon Farrell on the ones that twos.
I don't understand what's going on here. I don't even understand what we saw today, but damn,
does it feel good to see this Diamondbacks team get to 500 once again and sweep the Atlanta Braves
with one of the most amazing ninth inning comebacks we've ever seen. In fact, the most amazing
ninth inning comeback we've ever seen in team history. Of course, welcome in.
to this show. Of course, it is brought to you by our friends over at Bet365 and our friends at
GameTime. Make sure to download the Bet365 app. Use that code of PHNX365 when you sign up. You'll get
yourself some bonus bets. Go over to Game Time. Get tickets for a game, tickets to a game like
this wonderful game. And then you'll get $20 off on your first purchase. But Damon, what the
hell did we just see? We saw one of the most amazing things I've ever seen and I still can't help
but think that you are somehow involved in this whole process.
Derek, it really is pretty remarkable.
I don't want to gloat.
I don't want to glow.
It's just the minute you come on camera, I can feel the, I can feel the energy.
I can feel, yeah.
What did we talk about right after the game ended?
We said it's going to feel a little bit like less like a coincidence and a little bit more like
this is just scientific fact that me being associated with this team does in fact improve
our chances of winning baseball games.
That even I gave up tonight.
I'll even admit it.
I mean, I figure everybody probably did.
Everybody probably did.
The Diamondbacks at one point were down by a whole heck of a lot of runs.
Enough runs that, yeah, pulling back the curtain a little bit, Damon.
We had our rundown done.
We had a very negative headline in there.
Obviously, a lot of it was blaming Brandon fought for his terrible outing.
Oh, yeah.
Use that picture of Brandon fought where he looks really sad.
Yeah, that one's still in there.
You didn't change it out of the headline.
I wasn't going to.
Yeah.
No, but of course, this is a game.
where again the Diamondbacks were down by by six runs in the ninth inning going into the ninth inning even before that they were down for prime the majority of the game right they did put up a couple of runs there in the fourth inning but unfortunately thanks to another bad outing like I said from Brandon fought the diamondbacks were in a hole and to be fair the bullpen wasn't great today Tommy Henry was not exactly outstanding in relief of Brandon fought but he did eat up some innings for this team and allowed them to not have to go to two
many arms in the bullpen.
But this ninth inning comeback, Damon, I mean, this was incredible.
It marked the first time in franchise history when trailing by six runs or more entering the
ninth inning that the Diamondbacks win a baseball game.
They were 0 and 419 in these scenarios.
And now in 420 of those scenarios, the Diamondbacks are 1 and 419.
It was their largest comeback victory since July 29, 2004, almost a year ago against the
nationals where they scored six runs and won nine to eight after trailing eight to two in the
sixth inning it's also tied for their second largest comeback in franchise history which they
have done 12 times but two of their last five six run comeback wins have been versus the
braves interestingly enough so they can they seem to be able to do it against the braves today
that ninth inning was magical it was quiet in a way right like yeah
Like we were sitting here watching it.
If you were watching it, I mean, obviously, it's at an opposing teams ballpark.
And it was against a pitcher who I'm not making this up.
His last name was Blewett, which is the most incredible part about this.
It's like the anti Tim Duncan.
It's the anti Tim Duncan.
Yeah.
We were discussing what worst name is it to have for like a pitcher in baseball?
There was there was a ball four, ball for not, not exactly a great name to have.
but blew it,
blew it when you come in and you give up a whole heck of a lot of runs in the ninth inning
in a game that your team had pretty handedly five earned runs by Blewett there in the ninth inning.
And the Diamondbacks were able to put together, again,
a historic rally for this team,
just incredible what we saw.
And I just still can't believe that after, again,
the position that Brandon fought put them in early,
that the Diamondbacks were able to come back and win this game.
And not just Brandon fought, like I said, even though he didn't, he had a disastrous third inning.
Tommy Henry didn't do much to keep to stop the bleeding.
He allowed three earn runs himself.
I just still can't get over what this team did offensively today.
Despite, again, that terrible day on the mound, the offense, just turned this one around.
Cotell Marte late added a solo home run there in the eighth inning.
That was his 11th of the season.
What's funny, Damon, is at that point, this game was kind of so out of hand.
that I think jokes were being made on Twitter to it being like Chris Paul putting up a three when the suns were down by 40 or whatever that was.
You know, like it felt very much like that.
Now what?
Now what?
But now what?
But now what?
Now the Diamondbacks come back.
Ketalmarte, by the way, has reached base safely in his season best 18 straight games.
That's pretty good, Damon.
He's hitting 319 in that stretch with two doubles, eight homers, 13 RBI, excuse me, 14 RBI.
excuse me, 14 RBI
and 12 walks, four
hit by pitches. Lordus Gouriel
also added a home run there
late of his own in the ninth inning.
That kind of got things started
and that ninth inning was just
something incredible to watch.
It was just kind of one hit after another.
Sometimes a home run, sometimes not.
Gino started the inning off
by striking out and then yet
Gino comes back around in the same inning
and ends up being the hero
for this team. Goreal
Homer there. That was his ninth of the season. That made it a 10 to 5 game at the time. Then
Timmy Tawa walks. He advances to second. Alec Thomas then adds a home run of his own. Again,
these are all off a guy named Blewett, not making this up. As hilarious as it sounds,
his actual name was Blue. Well, we talked about Outman, right? And Tony puts it here in the chat and
reminds us, like, Outman is a name that could be extremely cool. But the fact that he plays
center field and his name is outman and he stinks at hitting that that makes it where it's like
an all time bad day not ideal but uh alec thomas is two run home run that then makes it a 10 to 7
game and we start believing probably foolishly damon but we start believing once again that this
team could do it uh hosea herrera walks and at that point uh raciel iglesias comes in to
replace scott blew it uh and then again it felt like at that point all right the braves were getting
serious. They're bringing in their closer. They're going to lock it down. Corbyn Carroll doubles. And
then that allows Jose Herrera to reach third. At the time, there was a lot of discussion in our
office. I was screaming at people to not move from their position that they were in. Screaming.
Screaming at the top of my lungs. And no one was allowed to get up from their desks or change seats or
do anything, really. And it was, that's the reason why, you know, Damon, we put a lot on Damon for him
to get this ready fast because he didn't have his charger. And I wouldn't let him get up from his seat to go get
a charger. I think everybody watching this right now can completely understand what I was doing
and can feel my actions were justified because in the end of Diamondbacks won so you can't
say that I wasn't justified in making everybody sit in their seats and not moved.
You've been scarred by this chat in these people in this community.
Oh, do you know that?
They take every little thing that you do differently and blame you for outcomes.
Oh, they definitely do.
So I feel like in your everyday life now, you're like on edge.
You're sitting on the edge of your seat.
Like you don't move a muscle.
Right.
But now what I need is I need to celebrate.
I need a celebratory frosty.
And if you don't mind, thank you, Shane.
I have a celebratory frosty in my hand.
Can I make that happen with money too?
No.
Money.
Can I have money?
No.
All right.
I'll take the frosty though.
Oh my God.
This is amazing, Damon.
See, this is the way you celebrate,
especially in this heat, celebratory frosties.
Oh, probably going to have to visit cold takes because of that.
What we got?
Is that baby?
Did you give me a baby?
What does that mean, Shane?
Are we having a baby, Shane?
Oh my God, we have to have a talk after this.
But things did get weird for just now on the set.
And things got weird for this team.
Again, once Iglesias came into the game,
the Diamondbacks somehow kept things going against him.
Carol doubles.
Cattle Marte singles.
That scores Jose Herrera.
And then Corbin Carroll goes the third.
And the Diamondbacks just kept picking away.
Got Perdomo up at the bat.
you think our risk king is going to come through.
He pops out probably in all his lost moment at that point, right?
Especially there in the ninth inning,
Ilomaro Vargas, who came in the replacement of Josh Naylor.
Josh Naylor apparently suffered some sort of injury that we really don't have the details on yet,
but he did leave the game.
Vargas comes in.
He singles on a line drive to center field.
That scores Corbyn Carroll,
can tell Martegos the second,
and it is now a 10-9 game in the Diamond Macs.
Legacy AB.
Just a legacy AB, especially.
especially coming into the game late and relief of Josh Naylor for him to be able to do that.
Incredible.
But you want to talk about Legacy AB, Gino Svarez, the guy who started the inning with a strikeout,
comes back up to bat.
The entire team bats around the ninth inning.
He doubles and he scores Kattel.
He scores Vargas, Diamondbacks then take 11 to 10 lead.
Shelby Miller comes into the game, locks things down.
And again, Miller in this game was probably the Diamondbacks only pitcher to really, I guess,
give credit to and everybody else was fairly bad in this one brandon fought i i have concerns and i
think everybody should have concerns uh he told toy lobollo apparently before this game that he would
never let what happened in his last outing happen again well this one wasn't as bad but it was still
pretty bad and again a lot of it started because of that could tell marty error this is another one of
those situations that's kind of you kind of see the starting picture like we talked about with
zack gallon with the defense uh not performing well behind him you get that air you get that
and then suddenly it felt like Brandon Fott just couldn't pitch anymore,
like his head just was not in the game.
And that's frustrating because, again, we all, as fans of this team,
as people that have watched this team over the last few years,
those plays in our minds are already made.
And again, this is kind of easier said than done, right,
by a pudgy guy sitting here eating Frosties talking about how good they should play defense.
But, you know, it's just something that Cotel Marte has been, has done.
year after year for this team and we're it's not just him but we are seeing marty make some errors
over there it was the second error of the year and that resulted in five runs scoring i don't know
what would have happened in in that world if marty gets at least one of those outs right i think that's
part of it is uh it's a little much to just assume that he could have gotten a double play
although it felt very uh felt very much like he could have he clanked just off his glove and you know
neither out is made, but again, that's, that, that's going to happen over the course of a game
and a pitcher can't really completely let things fall apart. And that's what happened to Brandon
fought. He goes on to allow five hits and five runs to score in the inning after that point.
Both of the walks he allowed in this game end up scoring on him. And he allowed three doubles
in a row in that third inning. He wasn't able to get out of it. He was all over the place with
his pitches. We have his pitch chart here. We can take a look at. But he just didn't really,
have, you know, a lot of these pitches, as you can see, are not competitive. They're not
anywhere close to the zone. And a lot of those are kind of bunched up there in the middle. So
it's just, it's unfortunate because Brandon Fott has been so good for this team all season long.
These last two outs, or these last two outings definitely are concerning. You know, I, you can
have a bad day. We've seen that from, you know, Merrill Kelly, for instance. Merrill Kelly had that
bad outing against New York. And every other game has been fairly solid from Merrill. It doesn't mean
he's unhittable every game but merrill definitely has things on track and a starting pitcher
is allowed to have their bad day but these these two outings being kind of back to back like they are
definitely in a concern and he only threw his sweeper three times i don't know if you really saw it
can see it in that pitch chart but only through his sweeper three times and his sweeper has been a
very good pitch for him so obviously there was something he was uh shying away from there
obviously didn't have a feel for that pitch today.
He did get relieved by Tommy Henry,
who was just recently called up.
And Tommy Henry gave the Diamondbacks a strong performance in relief.
I mean, as strong as you can expect from Tommy Henry
to just kind of be shoved into this game.
He still allowed three runs.
He allowed five hits.
But he gave the Diamondbacks four innings,
and that's the role that someone like Ryan Nelson
typically has played for this team
and not, you know, not really having that guy
that you can rely on to get you that many innings.
to eat up that many innings has been something that this pullpen has been missing.
It's one of the reasons why they've been so tech.
So again, Henry goes out there.
He does go four innings strong.
Like I said, gives up five hits and three run runs, but he only walked one.
And most impressively, he struck out seven.
So Tommy Henry really showing that he can still strike guys out.
Let's fire up.
Sorry, Brandon fought.
You're not getting it today.
Let's fire up the Circle K strikeout meter Damon in honor of Tommy Henry's performance because that's
seven K strong.
and he definitely was doing his best to keep the Diamondbacks in this game.
The rest of the bullpen didn't do a great job of that.
Kendall Graveman allowed one, went in there, gave up two hits, gave up one earn run.
But then Shelby Miller comes in with the lead there in the ninth inning after the Diamondbacks rally.
Felt very much like this was going to be maybe one of those moments that we've experienced this year,
like that Cubs game of excitement and then being let down again.
Well, I verbalized it on the show on game one of this series of like, imagine Shelby Miller blowing a save against the Braves.
Yeah.
And I felt like I was about to accidentally speak that one into existence.
That was about to be a frosty take.
Yeah, that was about to be a very frosty take.
And thankfully, Shelby just kind of leaves no doubt.
Very comfortable performance from Shelby Miller.
He did.
That's the kind of outings that Shelby has given this team so many times this year.
Just uneventful outings, right?
nothing sexy he did walk one guy but he gets three outs gets his inning of work done and the
diamond backs secure the victory so it felt very much like uh like like like everything there happened
very just calmly despite the fact that the diamond backs put up a historic amount of runs in that ninth
inning and then the diamond you know and then uh shelby comes in there and closes the door but
what a game what a game for this team and again i don't really know
what is going on when it comes to Damon rejoining the show.
But the Diamondbacks are 4 and 0 since Damon has returned the show.
They're currently on a four-game winning streak.
And things like this are happening.
And these are the kind of things that happen to teams that have a magical season,
not teams that had the season like they had in May.
So I'm conflicted.
I'm a man of science typically.
So I don't believe in Damon's magic.
I don't believe in what is going on here.
but it's hard not to.
So basically, again,
Damon's never allowed to not watch another Diamondbacks game as long as he lives.
That's kind of the position he's put himself in.
I will say, Derek,
you know,
I want to give myself a little bit less credit and maybe put it more towards the team that we have built here.
How about maybe it's just us.
What a guy.
Maybe it's just,
maybe it's just the vibes of,
of me and you and,
you know,
throw in our guy, Jesse.
Like this is,
you can't,
you can't beat that team.
Yeah.
It's a winning formula.
It is.
is it really is and it's proving it right now i mean we weren't at 100 percent you know and and just like
the diamondbacks we've had we've had returns but we've had sporadic returns we haven't we haven't had our
best team on the field we still haven't had our best team on the field all together yet and we're going to
have that soon jesse's going to be on one of these shows and that's going to be the interesting thing
is when when when the force of jesse's terrible luck combines with damon's unnatural hot streak that he's on right now i can't
wait to see which one of those,
which one of those forces wins.
But we got to give our king snake to somebody.
Damon probably deserves it, but he's too humble,
as you can see, to give it to himself.
The most.
We're going to give it to our guy with the game winning hit.
That's Gino Svarez.
Did it with his bat today, two for four,
two RBI, big double and a walk today.
So just amazing to see what Gino Svarez was able to do there,
especially considering, like I said,
he started out that inning, you know,
he started out that inning with the strikeout he started out that inning bad comes back
and and cleans things up very nicely lordis hitting 253 with a 743 ops gno 232 with an 815 ops
so still not great numbers from either one of those guys but it feels like those guys again
are back on track and lordis again season high game 11 game hitting streak for lordis
kattel martay continues to be on fire we'll hopefully get some word on josh nailer
Another guy that the Diamondbacks can't really afford to lose.
He's been really good with his bat this year and honestly, better defensively than even I've given him credit for this season.
But we are going to take a look at the numbers from this series because even though I said it last night, Damon, I said it by mistake.
Maybe that's why.
Maybe the baseball gods forgive me because they knew when I said the word sweep last night that I didn't mean to and that it was just a slip.
But maybe it was just a taste of things to come because the Diamondback.
complete the sweep the S word of the Braves and they improve to 31 and 31 is that
where we're at that is that 500 yeah baby we got it we've never been so back
diamond bags get back up that mountain we got this had to be a fun probability we
damon i can only imagine what the win probability chart on uh on on good old basis
ball savant looks like do we got to take a look at that oh that's not even a we i don't even know
how to describe that that's like uh the guardians of the galaxy ride at disneyland that just goes takes
you straight up right there's no incline to this roller coaster this is just a uh certain braves win
right up into a diamond bag's win somehow some way that's incredible yeah it's beautiful derrick
still got a little w there on usually usually usually
it's the other way around it feels like.
Usually it feels like we're on the receiving end of this.
Receiving end of this exact situation.
So it just feels good to finally win one here.
And I actually, I have another little fun exercise for us.
Perfect.
I'll play it again.
That's perfect.
All right.
Well, Diamondbacks start a series.
tomorrow with the Cincinnati Reds.
We will preview that on tomorrow's episode.
So make sure to join us at 12 o'clock for that.
We'll have a lot to talk about,
including some updates on the Diamondback Stadium situation
over at Chase Field and more.
But we'll do that then.
Right now we're still high on this game.
We're going to talk about the numbers from this series
with our By the Numbers segment presented by Desert Financial.
On the other side of this break,
don't you go anywhere.
You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show.
Of course, if you are Arizona residents,
you probably already know. Summer is here. The 100 plus temperatures, it's the next two weeks just straight. It's just going to be hot. And a great way to save yourself some money is to check out what APS has to offer right now in their marketplace because they want to save you money. And a great way to do that is with a smart thermostat. Of course, you may know this already, but more than 50% of your energy costs come from cooling and heating your home. So it's a great time to try to save some money on that. And you can do that with a smart thermostat that works with your APS rate plan to maximize.
comfort and convenience while minimizing your energy costs.
It's also a great way for you to be able to set your thermostat remotely.
It's one of my favorite things to do.
When I'm heading over, I'm about 15 minutes out.
I turn that AC down and cool my house down.
That way when I walk in, it's ready for me.
It's nice and cold.
And of course, you can do that with a smart thermostat, which you can, APS customers may be eligible for smart thermostats for as low as $0 when you enroll in the APS Cool Rewards program.
If you're not sure how to install a smart thermostat, free install is available.
at the APS Marketplace, and you can find instant rebates, discounts, and special offers on smart
thermosats, energy-efficient appliances, and more at the Marketplace.net.com. Must be an APS customer
and pay shipping and taxes. Other restrictions apply. Go to Marketplace.aps.com for more information.
And of course, another way to stay cool this summer is by Stop and by Circle K. It's America's
Thirst Stop. And of course, if you are an inner circle member, you will get your first five polar pops for
absolutely free. You also save on polar pops. You'll get 79 cent polar pops every single day.
99 cent frosters. You'll get your three for seven ghosts. We talk about being ghost people.
We're ghost people. I still I still like that we're ghost runners, but it's not nearly as funny as ghost people.
But you can save on all this stuff, including gas, by the way, you'll save 25 cents off per gallon on your first five phillips.
You'll save three cents every day after that. And all you got to do is join the inner circle for absolutely free.
Just download the Circle K app today. Terms and conditions to apply.
at participating locations, visit circlek.com for details.
But do not miss out.
You'll save 30 cents per gallon on fuel when you buy three Celsius.
So go over, get yourself some Celsius.
Save money on gas.
Great time right now, again, to get yourself cooled down and fill up your car.
Cars thirsty as well.
Both of you are thirsty, stop by America's thirst stop.
All right, Damon, let's take a look at the numbers from this series presented by our friends at Desert Financial
because this one, this one's a fun one.
Diamondbacks absolutely got out all.
all over the Braves.
They outscore them 21 to 14.
They out Homer the Braves 7 to 4 with three of those coming off against some chump named
blew it in the ninth inning of this game.
Diamondbacks were 10 for 29 with runners in scoring position in the series.
Pretty good.
Braves also very good.
7 for 19.
Diamondbacks just had more opportunities.
And again, more extra base hits, more home runs.
Diamondbacks starting pitching ERA, surprisingly good.
considering that one of those outings in that in that equation is the three innings five earned run by brandon fought however in gallons outing even though he did have some runs scored on him only one of those was earned he went seven innings one earned run meanwhile merrill absolutely outstanding seven innings scoreless in his outing the braves starting pitching a r a 5.65 not terrible not terrible uh you know a day for them especially what with chrisail out there in game two but uh just kind of got out dual
ruled by Merrill Kelly. Relief pitching ERA really where it's at. The Braves was not nearly as bad until today's ninth inning, allowing those runs there. They allowed eight earn runs there by the bullpen today. Four in the other two games of the series by the bullpen. Measwhile, Diamondback's bullpen ERA sits at five, which is exactly kind of where you expect it to sit, right? I mean, that's just where the team bullpen ERA sits at all times.
Right. It's kind of where the starting pitching ERA kind of also seems to sit.
We could have skeins, coal, you know, that could be our road.
Like that could be, I could run down the rotation of the five best pitchers in baseball.
They'd have a four, six, eight ERA.
Yep.
Team ERA for the Diamondbacks.
That's what's so frustrating about what happened to Brandon fought today and what's happened in his last two outings.
His ERA has absolutely ballooned.
And this was a guy where at one point we were knocking around the idea of him being a Sy Young candidate, not.
that long ago. Talk about a frosty take. That might be our frostiest take right there.
But Brandon Fott currently sits on a 5.51 ERA after these last two outings. This outing today,
not very good. His last one, as we've described it, his yes hitter didn't record a single out in that one.
So I really don't know, but I can understand the frustration that fans feel about this pitching staff,
both the relievers and the starters. And I can understand how much like Tori Levovon,
gets a lot of the blame for these losses and things not going their way.
I understand people being frustrated and kind of angry at the new pitching coach Brian Kaplan,
considering that, you know, it does feel like this is the situation with the pitching staff is just all over the place, right?
I don't really know, especially considering Kaplan's, you know, kind of his expertise being in player health and knowing the body and such.
And now we're seeing a lot of guys injured.
we are seeing guys, you know, kind of have these wild erratic starts like we saw out of Brandon Faw today.
And it just doesn't, it doesn't feel consistent, doesn't feel great.
As much as I want to be excited about this win, which we should all be excited about the first time.
Again, one and four hundred nineteen, diamondbacks having a six run deficit or more in the ninth inning.
The only time they've ever come back from this kind of deficit that late.
So that part of this is incredible.
hard not to be incredibly concerned about the starting rotation.
Not only do they already have the looming loss of Corbyn Burns hanging over us as we wait
for the second opinion and more MRI results.
We also have the fact that now Eduardo Rodriguez is returning.
You have uncertainty with both Zach Gallin and Brandon Fought.
And, you know, again, you don't really know what the starting pitching rotation, you know,
is going to look like in a month or two months or,
you know at the end of the season when the diamondbacks might need them the most right so
a lot of a lot of uncertainty but we're going to just celebrate i got my frosty i'm going to
celebrate this win and we're going to take a look because the dodgers loss uh yesterday let's take
a look at the what is it the the the uh orgy of violence known as the n l west is that what we're
calling it now well it was the yeah shoot why are we uh why are we blinking on this yeah it was definitely
It was as of last night, Derek, and both of us are just sitting here.
We're just sitting here just blanked on exactly the term that Bert used for the mascot race yesterday.
It was the, excuse me, drunken orgy of violence.
It was the drunken orgy of violence.
And that is what we're calling the NL West.
Let's take a look at the standings.
Diamondbacks currently sit at six games back.
Currently.
I don't know what to take away from that.
I will say that the Dodgers, again, are not.
not the best team in baseball right now.
That's nice to have some teams, have a better record than the Dodgers.
The Padres and Giants are kind of beaten up on each other, which is keeping things close.
And the Diamondbacks are winning some very improbable games to, again, take a look there.
Three games back there from the Giants, not too many games back from the Dodgers or the Padres.
So at least it feels like this series win, this series sweep was huge for this team,
especially considering, you know, those two disappointing series losses to the Nationals and the Pirates.
And, you know, respect to those teams because they've been playing good baseball.
The Diamondbacks caught them at a bad time and they kind of rolled over them similar to the way that they, you know, got rolled over by the Cardinals, right?
So it's just you can't really look on the schedule necessarily and pencil anybody in as a win or a loss when you're looking at the upcoming, you know, teams that the Diamondbacks have to face.
the Cincinnati Reds team just had a fairly exciting catch robbery happened for them to secure a victory in one of their games.
They were probably coming into this series with the Diamondbacks with a lot of energy.
But I don't know how the debacks right now couldn't be more pumped after this win, right?
This is the kind of win that makes you believe for the rest of the season that you can do it again, no matter what the deficit is,
which is something that baseball players very much need.
This is such a mental game that you just have to,
No, deep down inside, well, we've done it before.
We can do it again.
And that might just be enough to help this team win some games down the stretch
and give them the confidence that they need right now.
But I don't know.
I'm still, I still can't get over.
Kevin is sitting over here kind of close to us.
And based on the results of what's happened since Damon took over his producer,
I don't really feel comfortable about that.
I feel like Kevin should have to go to another room or something.
I think Kevin is like the, it's the real life encapsulation.
of the SpongeBob meme where Squidward
is looking out his window
and Patrick and SpongeBob are having so much fun.
You and I are having the greatest time right now.
Just right on the office,
screaming and Kevin's just in the production room
like looks like you guys are having fun over there.
It's fun. It's great fun.
We're having an amazing time without you.
I just want you to know that.
But we have some more to talk about
on the other side of this break.
And of course,
that more to talk about is some frosty
takes about the starting rotation. We're going to do that with our help with the help from our
friends at frosties and this delicious frosty that I'm eating right now. So don't you go anywhere?
You're watching the pH and X Diamondback show. I never got given a frosty. Well, Kevin was producing.
That's all I'm saying. But a great thing that would pair with this frosty, pure edibles.
Go out and get yourself some pure edibles right now. And I'll tell you, few things pair better than
pure edibles and ice cream.
Pure, pure edibles. Kevin literally brought the frosties into the office to do it.
I'm just saying I never got a frosty when Kevin was producer of the show.
I'm just saying.
I also, I did get lots of pure edibles, though, and pure edibles are amazing.
We had a chance, of course, to try their different effects, and they are great.
They have sleep support gummies as well as uplifting effects.
So maybe we don't need to be uplifted today based on this Diamondbacks win,
but maybe it's hard to get to sleep a little bit later with all this excitement.
So you can check out what Pure has to offer, not just gummies.
have their kicks, which are their version of Starbursts. They have chews, which are soft candies
like carmels, and they have hard candies as well. So whatever your preference is, pure edibles,
has a candy for you. They were created in Flagstaff, Arizona, at Noble Herb Dispensary,
the home of Pure Edibles, and is now made right here in Phoenix, Arizona. So check them out,
go find yourself some pure edible products from one of over 130 dispensaries across Arizona.
And again, speaking of Arizona, speaking of the summer, now is a great time for you
to extend your outdoor living space with our friends from all pro-shaped concepts.
We love being outside, but it doesn't last very long in this state.
A great way to do that is with some more shade.
They have very cool motorized awnings with LED lights.
They can match your colors of your home and ensure that you are HOA compliant.
And they can do all of this to help you have a better outdoor living life this summer.
They can add roll-down patio shades that can block the sun and keep your patio up to 20 degrees cooler.
And also keep your home 20 degrees cooler with indoor roll-down patio shades as well.
Hundreds of colors and durable fabrics to withstands.
and the Arizona Sun. Of course, they've been in business right here in Arizona for 20 years.
They started making window shades by hand for friends. And now they are making, they are one of
the largest installers of patio roll down shades and motorized awnings in the valley.

We do in fact have some super chats. I see our guy bees in here and that's great. It's a party
once bees is here. But absolutely.
What do we got?
Starting off with Karen Groundhog Mama says,
The Force is Strong of with your young Padawan, Derek.
Welcome back, Damon.
I'm sure he does not like being called my Padawan.
No, I actually don't like that.
I don't really like being called like a, these guys say, oh, I'm like their office dad.
And I hate every one of them for saying it every single time they say it.
Well, me and you are both Star Wars guys.
We are Star Wars guys.
Obi-Wan.
Just like Bo Brock, huge Star Wars guy.
Well, not quite that.
Not quite that level of fandom, of course.
you are both like obviously obi won and anakin had a very special relationship but they were they
considered themselves brother brothers obiwan says you're my brother you are my brother yeah so it's like
maybe we could have something a little bit more similar to that i do expect you to be the one that
eventually ends me so that actually tracks um um that's that's coming one day sure one day uh what else
we got in the super jats carlos says ninth inning bullpen meltdowns losing you games where you
scored double digit runs are actually pretty fun when you're on the opposite side of it.
Yes, they are, Carlos.
Yes, they are.
We don't know what it's like.
This is the first time.
What we got from Andrew Dang?
Andrew Dang.
Just got back from church, kids camp.
Love the shirt.
Defend the pool.
Defend the crown even.
Let's go.
Captain America.
Shield time.
Let's go.
Love it.
BCSC.
BCSC is here.
Says that they was talking out of their necks and got swept.
I like it.
Big body.
Big body, big body Brandon.
No, maybe not so big body brand.
No, not big body.
Shelby.
Big body Shelby.
Yeah, maybe.
Thank you, Alberto for your super chat.
He says, visiting from the Cardinals podcast, answer backs.
Let's F and go, Damon dog effect.
And yeah, the Diamondbacks are holding the line right now.
You could say they're holding the line right now.
That's definitely what they're doing.
Carlos says, wow, Damon comes back.
Yeah, not a super chat.
I just wanted to point this out because I had to, and this is where there.
You know, we're a, I like to consider us a connected team, which makes us, in fact, dangerous.
Very dangerous.
But I want to disconnect here for a half second because my guy Derek did nine divided by five equals five.
And I just, I rolled with it.
I rolled with what he had and I put it on the graphic.
And now I'm looking like a big stupid idiot because I used to always mess up to buy the numbers graphics.
And this time, it really truly wasn't on me.
I feel like I'm still batting a thousand here.
I really do.
five times what but five times nine is five nine divided by five four is a four point five
era which is the relief pitcher era for the diamond backs that's not what that is you don't don't
my calculations are nonsense there's a there's another nine innings that need to be added in there
it's nine times five divided by nine which brings it back to five well yoshi said it was four
and a half and i believe yoshi over derrick i don't know i would like yosha
she to show his math because nine times five divided by nine would be five that's the way that nine
times it multiplying something and dividing it would work but maybe i don't know what i'm talking about
maybe i don't know what i'm talking about um anyway uh let's take a look do you have any more yeah
we got a couple more bees two dollars all this proves is damon dog's return is goaded yeah there's no
doubt about that and then flea ball says tawa at first base against left-handed pitchers just sometimes
i don't hate it i don't hate it i don't hate it i don't hate it i don't hate
I mean, anything that takes the bat out of Paven's bat, the hands a little less.
It's good with me.
Maybe.
I also don't hate the idea of sometimes taking a look back at things we said that are silly.
And of course, that's what our friends at Wendy's wants us to do with our new segment, Frosty Takes,
where we are going to take a look back at something foolish.
One of us here on set said, maybe it was Kevin.
Maybe it was Damon.
It's certainly never me.
It can't be me, right?
There's no way I would have said something.
This is a situation where the Diamondbacks really do have an elite starting rotation.
And that starting rotation, at least right now, is seven pitchers deep.
It's pretty crazy.
Yeah.
Seven starting pitchers deep.
That's cute.
Remember when I said that, Damon?
That's cute.
Well, they do have lots of starting pitchers.
It's just not the same starting pitchers.
that I said earlier.
I bet I probably talked about how good the starting rotation was going to be
on the next 10 episodes of this show straight at that point.
I'm pretty sure.
I'm pretty sure that was the theme of the week, the month,
the entire rest of February.
That was in fact our first show after returning from our hiatus.
I was very excited for the Corbyn-Burn sliding.
I couldn't wait to do a show.
I couldn't wait to talk about how good the starting pitching rotation was going to be on here.
And yeah, there's probably a month of clips you could pull just like that of me talking about this Diamondbacks starting rotation being, I think the words I used were elite and one of the best in the league.
And I think competitive was definitely something I called them.
And instead, the Diamondbacks currently sit at what, like a 4.56 ERA, I believe, is where they're at.
That might have been before today's game, but that's just the starting rotation.
That sounds right.
It's gross how bad the Diamondbacks ERA is as a team.
You know what I mean?
And like, again, I don't really, it's a lot of things, right?
But it's kind of amazing how we felt that way.
I'm sure the organization felt that way.
You know, like the organization was like, we are good.
We are solid.
In fact, we're more than solid.
We went out and we added more pitchers than any one team would actually need.
And the Arizona Diamondbacks right now, the 4.45 ERA.
They are 25th in Major League Baseball in ERA.
The teams above them right now include the Nationals, the Angels, the Guardians, the White Sox.
White Sox starting pitching ERA is actually pretty good at 3.98.
It's the same as last year, it looks like.
It's almost identical to last year.
It's almost like that.
And we have Corbyn Burns.
Well, maybe not anymore.
But we did have Corbyn Burns.
And again, now we'll have the excuses, but we had the excuses last year.
right we were saying they're missing merrill edwardo is missing
zack keeps having these weird you know issues with having to leave a game suddenly
luckily he didn't miss significant time but he did miss time last year so
there were reasons why it was bad this i mean you still have your reasons you still have your
injuries you still have erod missing time you still have whatever the hell is going on with
zach and you still have corbin now missing and who knows how much time maybe the season
hopefully not um but you
You pair that with some of the injuries that they've had in the bullpen,
AJ Puck, Justin Martinez, Ginkle, not only being injured,
but being very, very bad.
You had Joe Mantipli just being unserviceable to the point where he's DFAed.
We have another roster move that we're going to talk about on the other side of this break.
So there was just a lot of reasons why this team's, you know,
starting pitching and relief pitching last year were bad.
This year, it's more performance-based.
We still have some injuries happening.
We still have had guys missed.
it just couldn't be more disappointing, right?
And again, I definitely had no problem committing to that take.
That wasn't even a take at the time I thought was going to be controversial.
In fact, the majority of our time spent during the off season,
if you want to talk about frosty takes,
we're focused on what do we do with all of this talent, Damon?
What do we do with all these guys?
They have too much talent.
It didn't take long for that depth to,
I'm not going to use the word be exposed, but I'll say that it didn't take long for that depth to disappear on them, right?
So it's unfortunate.
And again, I guarantee that wasn't the only time I said the exact same thing that I said in that clip during the off season.
So thank you Wendy's for exposing me for the fraud that I am.
And make sure you check out these Frosties.
Wendy's is putting a twist on a classic with these all new frosty flavors.
Find your new favorite flavor and clock in for a sweet treat time anytime, including midnight,
or later, that's when I tend to stop by and get my Frosties on the way home from doing these postgame shows.
It's a refresh on a classic, got to be Wendy's.
At participating, U.S. Wendy's, hours may vary by location.
And I want to sit here and just enjoy my Frosty.
Damon, now that's what I want to do, because I'm sad about my take.
But we have more show to do.
It's Thursday.
You know what we do on Mondays.
You know what we do on Thursday.
It's throwback Thursday.
So let's take a look at something pretty incredible to happen on this day.
back in 2000, back in 2000, not a win, not a result on the field, but the addition of one of those pitchers that made me believe that the Diamondbacks could have great starting pitching again.
On this day in 2000, the Diamondbacks drafted one Brandon Webb in the eighth round of the amateur draft.
Talk about a steal.
That guy ended up being pretty good.
Am I right?
Not bad for this team.
Webb in his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks had a 3.27 ERA.
87 wins, which is second all-time for this team behind Randy Johnson and 1.239 whip in his career.
One of Sai Young in 2006 was multiple-time All-Star.
And again, didn't he finish top three in Cy Young three years in a row?
That's insane.
He did.
He did finish.
That was 2006.
He finished actually top two three years in a row.
That's unbelievable.
He finished top two.
in signing voting in 2007 and 2008 was also an MVP.
He got voted for MVP as well in 2007, 2008.
Unfortunately, 2009 is when that devastating injury happened to him that resulted in the end of his career.
And again, we're, we talk about a lot of what if sometimes with this team.
That's a big one.
That's number one, I think.
Yeah, especially with what they were building at that time, you know, in that 2000.
Yeah.
Who could you say is even close to as big of a what if as?
I don't know.
Because like maybe people thought like Justin Upton was going to be maybe a more transcendent star.
Sure.
But he still gave you good games as a diamond back.
Like Brandon Webb was a Hall of Famer in the making.
And you just lost him in the midst of his prime.
And Justin Upton's career isn't like tragic, right?
He just left for a different team.
He had a good career, yeah.
And that's like I think that's kind of the difference here is the different.
And he had a long career too.
You know what I mean?
So he ended up playing in.
until 2022, I believe.
But, yeah, I mean, a lot of it was just the fact that he left us for the Braves of all teams.
We're bringing up the Braves.
And then, you know, he played his significant portion of his career with the Angels where,
you know, unfortunately what he did didn't really matter.
Well, that's, I mean, welcome to the Angels organization.
That's what I'm saying.
But again, his career numbers, nothing crazy.
But, yeah, I mean, when he was here, Justin Upton was an incredible player for the Arizona
Diamondbacks.
he slashed 278, 357, 475 in his six years with the Diamondbacks for an 832 OPS.
And you know what was weird about Justin Upton was he just, I always saw him be that reluctant leader that people like thrust him into that role.
Brandon Webb kind of just naturally was that for this team.
And he was just naturally this very good pitcher that again, to think about the Diamondbacks getting him in the eighth round of the amateur draft.
in for him to be what he became.
Just shows how insanely wild, you know, baseball can be,
how talent can really be found at levels that you wouldn't imagine sometimes in professional
sports.
So, but like I said, the Diamondbacks did make some other roster moves that we still have
to talk about.
We are going to do that on the other side of this break.
Don't you go anywhere?
You're watching the PH&X Diamondback show.
Well, I got Damon on board.
So we're finally going to be able to go take our boys trip to He-L
the river resorts and casino and that's because mostly because of the bet mjim sports book i convinced
him that that's where we're going to go we're going to watch a little bit of this NBA finals action
that i guess nobody cares about i don't know that's what that's what the word on the street is
is that a game between a team from indiana and a team from Oklahoma city can't be compelling
but i disagree and i'm going to go there watch the NBA finals with this guy we have some great
food massive screens and of course get those tickets make our bets and how to
have a great time. It's the ultimate place to watch and win, place your bets and experience the

That's BBPHNX.
And now, Damon, I know he can hear me now.
I'm like this is a little different.
We were kind of talking about Shane wanting to turn our PHNX pool takeover event.
at Chase Field into his birthday party of some kind.
And we refuse to let that happen.
We are not going to let that happen.
It is an event for our diehards.
It's about us.
It's about us.
It's about the Diamondbacks.
It's about baseball.
It's about our love of the game.
Not our love of Shane.
Not our love of his birthday celebration.
Right.
But regardless, if you like Shane, you can still come.
I'm not like making you not come.
But don't bring cards.
Don't bring presents.
No balloons.
No streamers.
Nothing like that.
for Shane. I refuse to allow it.
It's going in the pool. He's going in the pool. Yeah.
We might even break cogs's record for how many times we threw cogs in the pool last time.
Shane's a big man.
It's going to be a challenge. I didn't say it was going to be easy.
We're going to have to do it as a team, but we're going to do it together on July 3rd from
530 to 10 p.m. out at the Chase Field pool.
We have the right field pool reserved and we're inviting you to come hang out with us.
Watch the Diamondbacks take on the San Francisco Giants.
You get your complimentary food.
You get your ticket to the game.
and get your drink as well and you get to take home that that diamondbacks beach towel so it's a great time
make sure to join us tickets are very limited and they did sell out last time so uh please do not
DM me begging for tickets once they've sold out because there's nothing i can do i'm i am a mayor
but i have no jurisdiction of the pool area at chasefield so make sure that's what jake from john boy is
is in charge of correct yeah that's his that's jurisdiction of phoenix is i think espo is under him i don't know
he was in the lifeguard outfit last time.
We'll have to figure out that power dynamic a little bit further.
It's crazy.
But it's definitely Jake, Jake, little Jake, little Jake verified, right?
We got Big Jake, which is Faj and then we got, we got to keep these guys straight.
Yeah, I remember I tried to explain who Big Jake was.
We were taking guesses and Derek literally guessed Jake from John Boy.
And I was like, have you seen Jake from John Boy?
That is my definition, little Jake.
Why would we ever call that man that?
All right.
Well, Big Jake is the tallest man a lot.
We have some news, Damon, when it comes to the 40-man roster.
We have a roster move that was made before today's game.
The Diamondbacks have designated right-handed pitcher Scott McGuff for assignment.
The team announced today his spot on the 40-man roster goes to lefty Andrew Saul-Frank,
who has been reinstated from the ineligible list after being suspended due to that violation of betting on baseball.
Saul Frank has now been optioned to the Diamondback's rookie ball affiliate
Nears on a Complex League where he will get some get some rehab starts and I imagine
and you know could see time I don't I don't know what they're going to do with Saul Frank at this
point chances are he'll go to Reno once they feel like he's at a competitive level to play
against you know and they easy complex league is also still competitive baseball I don't
mean to make it sound like it's not but he is definitely a a guy
who could be a part of this bullpen very soon.
And I don't know how fans feel about that.
I know a lot of people are,
a lot of people don't really care about what he did.
And to be fair,
I don't mean to undermine it,
but if there was ever a less significant way
to violate a rule like that,
I don't know if I've seen it.
I mean, he was betting dollars, right, on games.
Like, he bet an accumulated amount,
I believe that was less than $150 on baseball.
like it was you don't even want to know the amount of money that has cycled even out of my account that's what i'm
saying damon they've spent that on thursday yeah this is a professional baseball player right right uh but
again what what i guess what i find amazing is is that uh the morality of the situation just goes
to prove that real people really don't care uh what's happened here is scott mcuff has been a guy that
his time with the diamondbacks has not been easy he definitely wasn't a job
Manticly, who, you know, there was a time where Joe Mantyply was a very valuable part of this team.
And then he just kind of slid off a bit, right?
Just wasn't able to perform at the same level that we saw him perform in the past.
But Scott McGuff is this tenure with the Diamondbacks is just kind of always been McRuff, I guess you could say, right?
He has not been a guy that's had like very, you know, good, good stretches with this team.
He's had a lot of big games where he did not put.
perform well and cost the diamond backs a win, right?
So it's, it's unfortunate.
But again, because of the, I guess the idea here that Saul Frank could be maybe what he was
at the end of that 2003 season, people don't seem to really care.
And again, I also understand it, right?
Like, it's just one of those things that, you know, this team right now is so desperate
for someone that can come in and help them win games that people are happy to say.
Audio Scott McGuff and welcome back.
Andrew Saul Frank. So it's it's it's it's a unfortunate situation for McGuff because I feel like at times
he actually seemed like he was a better pitcher than the results showed. However, you know,
it's just he had some really high profile, uh, blown, you know, games and, and it's hard for
people to think of anything besides that. Yeah. Yeah. It's, I mean, that's the high leverage games
are what people, everyone remembers, right? Yeah. And I mean, again, remember you got kind of
of plunked into the same closer situation when didn't really seem like he was the best option at
one point you know he's had uh he even had a stretch this year where i i kind of talked him up and was like
hey actually mcguff's not doing so bad and then he went and proved me wrong and provided me with another
uh frosty take that i could probably find the clip of you know but it's he was good in 20203
for that first half of the season he was legitimately he was and again scott mcguff uh turn off the light
Probably turn off the lights.
Sexiest man in Arizona at one point.
Let's not forget that.
I think he was named that.
I'm pretty sure.
I'm pretty sure somebody.
By a reputable publication.
I would say that about him.
I'm sure somebody did, right.
But again, this was a guy that, you know,
before coming to the Diamondbacks last pitched for the Miami Marlins back in 2015
and had that eight-year stretch, he pitched overseas.
And again, when he came back to this team, there was a pretty good portion of the year
where he wasn't bad.
but lately, I mean, even this year, you go back to his,
he had three scoreless outings in a row against the Dodgers,
against the St. Louis Cardinals, and against the pirates.
But then against the other two games against the pirates and nationals,
he gives up a total of five run runs in those two outings.
So Diamondbacks have moved on and look for other options there in the bullpen.
They also, again, have some things to figure out here
with how everybody's going to factor in,
whether Tommy Henry is going to stay up,
Christian Mena. There's other guys here that might be more permanent parts of this bullpen
might not stick around. The Diamondbacks still need some depth. So again, with kind of now at
the bottom of the barrel as far as starting pitcher depth is concerned, they probably can't afford
to have Bryce Jarvis come up. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Tommy Henry potentially
sent back down to continue to stay stretched out and stay available for starting pitcher depth.
but for now, for now,
Saul Frank is back to the 40-man roster
for the Diamondbacks and everything,
again, everything's lined up
for them to hopefully be able to continue
this streak. Damon is here, so
it doesn't feel like it's going to end anytime soon,
but we will be back
tomorrow with another 12 p.m.
show, so make sure to join us
for that. We have a lot to talk about
there in regards to the Diamondbacks
current situation
with their ballpark and that
bill that was getting past. We also
have some all-star talk. Maybe
Catelle Marte might start
is on the way to building, despite
with how much time he's missed, building
towards that all-star bid once again
this year for this team. So,
plus we have a preview of that series with
the Cincinnati Reds. That's another team
that's kind of been up and down. Don't know what to expect
out of them. Diamondbacks can't really
take them for granted.
And really right now are kind of in a
must-win mode, right? It's more
about making sure
at least at one point we were ready to write this game off as a loss.
We were just satisfied with the series win, right?
So it's all about trying to get those series wins.
That's the thing that'll get them back into this division race
and I'll get them back into the wild card hunt.
But we got a couple of more super chats before we get out of here.
Piece of Yoshi said, just announcing that I've put my math in the chat.
Okay.
We don't need to see his math.
I mean, nerd.
Nerd?
Right.
Nerd much?
We're talking sports over here.
I put math in the chat.
So whatever.
But let's see.
10 bullpen innings, two on Tuesday,
two on Wednesday,
six today.
He said that you did the really ERA
not factoring in Shelby Miller's
ninth inning and that if you had factored
in one more inning, then it would have been a four or five
ERA. It's fair. It's probably fair.
It's probably fair. There was a lot of stuff done in a hurry.
All right. You don't have a show to play in for Yoshi.
Flea ball says late to it, but pickle juice
working for Merrill.
Yeah.
Right? It's not bad. It's not bad.
All you need to do is apparently run in the dugout in between innings and drink pickle juice.
But again, thank you guys so much for your super chats.
Thank you guys so much for being here.
Again, we'll be back tomorrow with the 12 p.m. show.
Until then, you can follow us on Twitter.
I am at cap underscore caveman with a K.
Damon, the lucky rabbit's foot is at Damon Dog, D-A-W-W-G.
We are all Damon's dogs, bark, bark.
That doesn't really work for you with the sports betting thing, though, does it?
the whole like rabbit's foot thing like is it should I make my bets close to you like should I
just like listen to you while I'm in the middle it doesn't work it doesn't work from a money
standpoint it only works from my baseball team all the rest of my team stink man yeah no I yeah yeah
you're right about that but we're glad to have you back and we're glad to have you possibly impacting
this team remember no matter what Shane tells you the takeover is not for his birthday so do not
breaking birthday presents but do join us for that because it's going to be a whole lot of fun
and make sure you come back tomorrow at 12 p.m. for this show. So again, we thank you guys.
thank the Diamondbacks for doing the thing. One and 419 in games where they are down by six
runs or more heading into the ninth inning and that one happened today. We all gotten a witness.
We are all witnesses. So of course, thank you guys again for stopping by. We'll see you tomorrow.
Until then, have yourselves a wonderful rest of your day and your evening. Enjoy this win.
Behave yourselves. I'm talking to you, Yoshi. And of course, more than anything, remember kids, baseball is fun, but it is so much more fun when you just score seven runs in the ninth inning and decide to win the game, even though you were down for most of it.
