Well, Eduardo Rodriguez absolutely got shelled tonight in New York,
and it was definitely the tale of two pitchers,
considering how well Ryan Nelson pitched in relief.
We have more on that, the offense being listless,
and you know what, screw it,
our favorite Tom Hanks movie since he was in attendance.
All in 30 seconds, don't you go anywhere?
Well, that game absolutely sucked,
as did that performance from Erod.
Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast.
No ski for this team.
They don't deserve it.
But you guys deserve it for being here.
Thank you guys so much for joining us.
Thank you so much for being here in the chat.
Like I said, my name is Derek Monti,
occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX.
I got my guy, large intimate,
aka Kevin Thomas on the ones and twos.
And of course, this show is brought to you
by our friends at Bet365 and GameTime.
Go download the Bet365 app right now.
Use our code of PHNX 365.
When you sign up,
you'll get yourself some bonus bets and then go over to game time buy yourself some tickets maybe
not for this team maybe for another team i don't know but buy yourself some tickets and use that code
of phnx on your first purchase you'll get $20 off that purchase diamondbacks lose tonight by a score
of eight to three i don't even know if that final score really does this game any justice for how bad
it was for how bad edwardo rodriguez's start was tonight probably the worst start of his career
in Arizona Diamondbacks history.
I just didn't feel like looking that stat up.
I know that's my job.
I know I probably should have,
but it just kind of made me so kind of bummed out there
that I don't really know
if I wanted to go back and look into that history.
But again, Diamondbacks lose by score of eight to three.
They dropped to 15 and 14 now going three and seven
in their last 10 games.
They are in a bit of a tail spin.
And tonight it was pretty much a tale of.
two completely different pitchers for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
But welcome in to all of you except piece of Yoshi.
No welcome in to him.
He is a double agent and a turncoat.
He says,
I'm so sorry,
but I don't believe him one bit when he says,
I'm so sorry.
Sean says,
I got to sit this one out and watch the show later,
horrible game on tomorrow.
Way too soon to panic with so much time left.
There will be no TOD talk on April 29th.
We will miss you, Sean.
but we completely understand.
I myself would not watch this show.
First of all,
I'm not a fan of the host.
And second,
yeah,
me too,
yeah,
yeah,
yeah,
second,
this one was a depressing loss
and the Diamondbacks
were out of it early,
right?
We're going to have the chicken
or the egg talk later
about the offense.
We're going to get into the numbers
from the series.
But I think the big,
the big takeaway from this game
was definitely a tale of two pitchers here
when it came to the performances
of Eduardo Rodriguez versus
Ryan Nelson for the Arizona
Diamondbacks tonight. Erod was
solid, I guess you could say
through the first inning. He allowed a single
to Pete Alonzo, but he got two
popouts and he struck out Juan Soto.
So things looked good after one
inning. That was after
one inning, Kevin. Things quickly
changed. Within the blink of an
eye, the second inning
crept up on Erod and just
immediately, it wouldn't go away, really.
It wouldn't go away. With one
out. He gives up a single to Luis
Angel Acuna and then with two outs,
he gives up an RBI double to
Tyrone Taylor that scored
Acuna, an RBI single
to Jose Azokar,
who then would score Taylor.
And then a
two run, home run to Francisco
Lindor to really cap
off a terrible inning there.
Diamondbacks are down at that point
by a score of four to
nothing. Unfortunately, as
much as you guys hate it, I have to
give that Sanderson for deep drive of the game to Lindor's two run home run because that was
the decision maker in this game. I mean, he went on to give up more runs, but it felt like that
was the point that this game was over. Unfortunately, the Diamondbacks had no home runs to speak
of in this one. They only had two extra base hits, two doubles by Geraldo Perdomo and Randall
Gritchick. But yeah, I mean, Jake Huddy here in the chat says it, 11 and 30 against the Mets,
four and 18 against the Mets at home since 2018.
The Mets are incredibly good at home this year too.
So you compare those two stats come together, right?
The fact that Diamondbacks seem to just not be able to get over on the Mets at City Field
and the fact that now the Mets are 13 and 1 at home this season,
which is one of the best records, I believe 14 games start and MLB history for most teams,
not to mention for the Mets themselves.
But with the way that the offense performed tonight, that Lindor home run would have been enough,
even if Erod really had just had that one bad inning and had kind of, you know, just did the crooked inning thing where that one inning got away from him,
but then was able to get things back on track for this team.
Maybe the Diamondbacks would have had a different outlook.
Maybe this game has a different outcome because the Diamondbacks were able to kind of eke out three runs throughout the game.
But despite the fact that they had the exact same note,
number of hits as the Mets, which I'm going to scream about here in a little bit.
The Diamondbacks just couldn't put things together in the same way the Mets could.
The Mets scored in bunches.
They went after Erod again there in the third inning.
Things just seemed to get worse than they were.
The fourth, he walks Pete Alonzo to lead off the inning.
He gives up a two-run, home run to forming former Arizona Diamondback Starling Marte
to make it 6-0 at that point.
Then Acuna singles, steals second, and scores on a Taylor RBI single.
that's 7-0.
And then the last draw was in the following inning.
In the fourth inning, he allowed a solo home run of Pete Alonzo
to really just put this one in the old deep freeze at 8 to nothing.
This was one, like I said, this is one of Erod's worst starts for a diamond bag.
He ends up going four innings.
He gives up nine hits, eight earn runs, walks one, strikeout one.
Are we going to put up, are we going to actually, do we fire up?
Do we light up the Circle K straight out?
strikeout tracker for just one strike we do. Wow. There it is. We shouldn't we shouldn't do that.
That's a waste of energy, right? That's that's a waste of your skill set and power and electricity.
It's a waste of my skill set. And a lot of things. My skill set was wasted. Your skill set was
definitely wasted putting that together for just one strikeout. But nonetheless, one strikeout tonight
for Erod. And again, his worst start of the year. Maybe.
Maybe.
Maybe no more catch the day before you have a start.
Aw.
Did I just turn heel again?
I know it was wholesome and it was in Central Park and it looked like he was having a great time.
But no more catch.
And that's not just for him.
That goes for all of you.
I don't know what their regimen is.
I just don't want them to have bad performances like this.
His ERA balloons to 6.06.
Yikes.
And yeah, that's where we stand.
Derek, how long, sorry to cut you off, but how long until we start talking about how much we miss Brent Strom?
I mean, man, I don't know.
Like, is that a conversation that should be had, could be had?
I don't.
It's, it could be had.
It's, it's, it's almost like this conversation that we're going to have about Ryan Nelson.
Does it matter how well he pitched at that point?
Not really, because the Diamondbacks weren't going to be able to muster up a company.
I mean, they've done that, right?
Like, we shouldn't say they aren't capable of coming back from an eight.
run deficit. However, this Mets team is kind of too good for that right now with the way that
they're playing baseball. They're extremely hot and they showed it tonight. But the debacks were
down 8 to nothing when E. Rod exited the game. And Ryan Nelson comes in and once again makes
his case for why he should be back in the starting rotation. He absolutely outperformed Erod
tonight. He basically pitched an entire start. And again, I know this is, unfortunately,
Fortunately, based on his last two starts, this is extremely contingent on Ryan Nelson's ability to land his fastball.
Tonight, he threw 70% well, 69% fastball.
Nice.
I'm not making that up.
I didn't alter that stat just so that I could do that.
He did throw 69% fastballs.
He threw 47 fastballs, 68 pitches tonight.
He basically had himself a full start.
Ryan Nelson went out there.
I mean, he did.
Erod had 69 pitches.
I'm not doing this.
That's just how many pitches he actually had tonight.
I am not altering the stats.
ERA did have 69 pitches.
Nice.
Ryan Nelson had 68 pitches.
And again,
through the fastball 47 times for 69% nice of his pitches.
And he was landing them.
He got six whiffs on his fastball tonight.
And he was able to locate.
That was the key.
That's the big difference between this and his last outing.
And again,
Ryan Nelson may not fool you
with what he's going to throw.
But when he can throw his fastball and he can throw it well like he did tonight,
he maxed out at 97.5 miles per hour.
He averaged 95.4 miles per hour on the fastball.
It's just a really good pitch for him.
And he went out there to eat up some innings for the Diamondbacks and he did that.
And he saved the bullpen some some innings.
And that's exactly what the Diamondbacks at this point needed to do between the off day
and between tonight, their bullpen should be fully reset and available for the final.
two games of the series and the Diamondbacks again,
they have to figure things out because this Mets team is very good.
However, I still can't believe that the Diamondbacks ended up with the same number of hits.
Tanner asks, were the D-backs good at Shea Stadium?
I don't know.
Probably not, but I'll have to look that up.
Diamondbacks, I'll tell you, though, this is one of those performances where,
despite the fact that they had nine hits.
Their offense didn't look good.
This just again comes down to a question I'm going to ask.
Chris, that's not the question we're going to ask.
Chris asked in the chat.
So season over.
No.
No.
I will note that there are things to look forward to.
There are changes that can still be made to this team.
And I still think that a lot of these guys in the starting rotation aren't pitching up
to their full potential, at least guys not named Brandon Fought.
Meanwhile, Brandon Fott is making a case to be a Sly Young candidate, potentially, this
season.
Meanwhile, the rest of the starting rotation has just been bad.
And that's the fact of the matter.
We just spoke to Randy Johnson a week ago.
And Randy Johnson had said, in his opinion, this was one of the best starting
rotations of Diamondbacks have ever had in franchise history.
They're not pitching like it right now.
And again, this is that.
weird anomaly where you just can't quite understand why would the talent they have that this team
collectively still as a starting rotation now has an ERA well above 4.3 and is one of again in the in the
bottom five for baseball teams this season. Eduardo Rodriguez he some of his stats for this team are you know
he does have some of the best stats he does have some of the best peripheral stuff he has some of the best
strikeout numbers. It's just confounding to see him go out there and pitch like he did tonight.
This, you know, again, got to tip your cap to this Mets team that has been playing some incredible,
some incredible defense. Their pitching has been the best. Their starting pitching has been the
best in Major League Baseball and it looked like it tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
They weren't able to do much as a team offensively and we're going to get to those numbers on the
other side of this break. But I guess the big question before we go to break is, is
does Ryan Nelson realistically start creeping up as the next question for this team,
for the franchise? Does it start becoming a matter of, you know, is Ryan Nelson capable or
should Ryan Nelson be put back in the starting rotation? And if you do, what move do you make? Does
Erod get put into the bullpen? Does perhaps, I mean, who else are you going to move? There's no
There's no one else right now, especially after today's performance.
I'm sure Rodriguez is going to be the name that a lot of people are thinking that perhaps gets swapped out.
But I don't know, man.
I mean, Brian Nelson, there's an excellent article over there from AZ Central in regards to Ryan Nelson and his usage.
And the fact that the Diamondbacks really need to figure something out here soon with him because, again, he can't be stretched out and then also put in the bullpen and then be stretched back out again.
And so if the decision is going to be made in regards to Nelson,
especially after today's performance,
then they have to consider it soon.
His line, he went four innings pitch, did not allow a hit tonight,
did not allow a run, walk two, struck out three.
It's quite the difference from Erods, four innings, nine hits,
eight earn runs, one walk, one strikeout, two home runs.
So, or three, excuse me, three home runs.
Anyway, we got some super chats, Kevin.
I need to talk about something other than this terrible pitching performance.
It's making me sad.
Yeah, B. Calms, he clearly has a couple.
Be Calm started with Ryan should be getting the nod.
He was nasty tonight.
He was nasty tonight.
He really was.
Followed that one up with, is Ryan Nelson single?
I need that cake emoji.
Kissy face, kissy face emoji.
It's fat with a P-H-A-T.
I like when you describe the emojis.
I'm a literal guy, Derek.
It really brings the life out of them.
chat. And then last but certainly not least, BCSC says, don't disrespect Merrill Daddy Kelly. He's a dog.
Yeah, you're right. I shouldn't. Merrill Kelly had one bad outing this year. And aside from that,
he's been incredible. Derek Foster says, Ryan Nelson, my man, boo. Yeah, understandably so.
Also, there has been reports of how similar him and Damon look in the face. And so that kind of
makes him our dog. Don't let BCS, you know. Don't let BCS, you know that. Yeah, no, no, no
kidding, no kidding.
And then Benjamin Hunley says what happened to Gabby?
Gabby got removed from the game.
Is that what you're talking about?
I don't really know.
I don't have an answer for you.
Hopefully we have an update.
He doubled.
And then was he removed?
Oh, you mean that when Garrett Hampson came in?
I don't know.
That's probably a good question.
Hopefully nothing too wrong there with Gabby.
but we'll get we'll get some word from the diamondbacks i'll keep an eye for any updates here
from the team i haven't seen anything yet though so hopefully no news is good news when it comes
to that for gabby but we appreciate your guys super chat so much love you guys michael with his
super chat chat says a j does not need surgery let's go all right well that would be the best
possible news of the entire day let me see if i can
get an update on that because if AJ puck yep Steve Gilbert tweeted out nine minutes ago surgery
is not needed for AJ puck will not throw again for the next two to three weeks once asymptomatic
he'll start to throw again. Hallelujah on this night of not really good news we get some great
news in regards to AJ puck thank goodness to hear that a lot of people are tweeting that Steve Gilbert
tweeted it out Jody Jackson also tweeted it out so
This is fantastic news to hear in the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Hopefully we'll get AJ Puck back sooner than later.
That is, I'll tell you, man, I'll be very happy to see that AJ Puck returns to this team for the Diamondbacks.
They didn't have many options for a left-hander in the bullpen, so that is great news.
Oh, and I see what Benjamin Hunley is talking about.
My apologies, Benjamin.
You're absolutely right.
He's talking about Gabby's production.
He was just one for four tonight, batting 225 with a 567 OPS.
If he's not getting the bat on the ball, he's not getting on base.
But I don't know, man.
I mean, those guys, that trio of Lordus, Gino, and Gabby continues to be probably the most frustrating thing about this offense right now at this time.
everybody outside of that has been performing fairly well
been chipping in at least and those three guys again
not a good night for them oh for four for lordis
even though he was absolutely robbed we're going to talk about that
gino was oh for four and gabby one for four
with just that double in the strikeout gino also struck out i don't know i
don't know i mean gino again after that four home run night
we thought we maybe unplugged gno and plugged him back in
doesn't seem to be the case but uh we will talk about the
offense on the other side of this break.
So don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show.
Well, good news if you got tickets to the Diamondbacks branded bills golf hat,
golf night that then you are in.
If you didn't get tickets, my apologies because that bad boy behind me, that little guy

Also, if you are a business looking to hire,
LinkedIn is the place to go.
And let me tell you, as someone that was looking for,
employment. LinkedIn is also the place to go. But you don't have the luxury sometimes as a
business owner clocking out. You have your business to run 24-7. A big part of that is finding
the right personnel to help you run your business. LinkedIn can do that for you. LinkedIn makes
it easy to post your job for free, share it with your network and get qualified candidates that you can
manage all in one place. LinkedIn's new feature can help you write job descriptions and then quickly
get your job in front of the right people with deep candidate insights. You know, on the time,
to write these lengthy posts and make everything sound so eloquent.
Let LinkedIn help you with that.
You can share with your network.
And of course, based on LinkedIn's data,
72% of SMBs using LinkedIn,
that small businesses say that LinkedIn helps them find high-quality candidates.
So post your job for free at LinkedIn.com slash debacks.
That's LinkedIn.com slash debacks to post your job for free terms and conditions do apply.
I wouldn't have got this job without LinkedIn at all.
Tell me about it.
That's how I found this spot.
Not only that, but it's a great place for you to find a lot of inspiration, right?
Like, I don't know.
I think that sometimes these other social media sites, right, can be filled with memes and people screaming in all caps, right?
Skibbitty risz.
Skivety ris.
You know what I mean.
But, of course, that's where you can go and get some inspiration for the job stuff.
of course maybe the diamond backs need some inspiration from linked in on getting their offense going because
overall was another fairly listless performance from this team again couldn't string together a big inning
couldn't put together you know just anything offensively it felt like at times they got something going
there a little bit in the ninth inning when it was too little too late and that's how it pretty much felt
after the third inning this and anything the diamond backs could do offensively felt like it was a little too
too little too late.
But nine hits, Kevin, nine hits.
They had the same amount of hits as the Mets and the score is eight to three.
Oh, baseball.
You're stupid.
Jorge Brosa did get the Diamondbacks their first run on an RBI double in the fifth inning.
That scored Gabby Moreno and then Gritchick doubled and scored on a Guriel RBI single in the eighth.
That wasn't ruled a single.
Eventually was ruled, I think, an error.
So they took that hit away from the dime back.
So they actually had eight, excuse me.
They did reverse that.
So they did not have the same amount of hits.
But eight to nine, come on.
That's ridiculous.
They added another one in the ninth inning.
But again, that just really felt like it didn't matter at that point.
What I want to address, I want to address that fourth inning.
That's what I want to address, Kevin.
That fourth inning was something else.
The top of the fourth inning, quite possibly, was the most infuriating half of an inning that we have watched from the Diamondbacks.
so far this season.
All three outs recorded by the Mets in the inning should have been hits.
And they were all highlight real plays by the Mets.
Like I can't, this isn't like the umpire screwed the Diamondbacks.
This isn't like a fan got involved.
So I'm, I'm angry about it.
No, no.
This is just the Mets playing the high quality of defense that we're used to seeing from
the Diamondbacks that we haven't seen this entire season.
and they were all highlight real plays.
Every single one of them.
Randall Gritchick grounds out to third baseman Mark Vientos,
who makes an incredible play,
tossing it to Francisco Lindor,
who then makes the throw over to first base.
That ball had a 630 XBA for you kids keeping scored home.
That means it had a 63% chance of falling for a hit.
Meanwhile, Tyrone Taylor made a ridiculous catch in center field,
robbing Lordus Gurriel of one of the only hits he was going to have in the month of April.
That was going to be a gapper. That had an XBA of 490. Maybe that's not quite as high.
That's right around a 50-50 ball. But still, that would look like it was going to fall for a hit.
And they robbed Lordus Guriel of that one. And then Gino Suarez hit the hardest hit ball of the game at 111.8 miles per hour off the bat to the left side,
which is snagged by Francisco Lindor, who makes the throw for the asses.
out, that ball had a 670 XBA.
Again, 67% chance of falling in for a hit.
The game was over at that point, Kevin.
The game was just over.
If there was ever a time I just wanted to see an umpire call a game
because nothing was going to go one of the team's ways,
it was this game at that point.
Because there was no chance of the Diamondbacks coming back
with the Mets flying around the field and making these plays.
that they made. It was incredible. It was incredible.
I want to, can we ban piece of Yoshi? Like, I don't know. I don't want him calling normals.
Maybe not. Yeah, he probably doesn't deserve it, but I would just consider it.
He kind of makes me sick, though, as did the Mets. The score didn't matter because the snakes
couldn't really, I don't know. Did it matter? Doesn't matter. In a game like this,
this is the chicken or the egg situation I was talking about earlier, right? The Diamondbacks were
down by so much.
But they didn't get things going offensively.
They muster up three runs on eight hits.
So does it even matter that Erod pitched so poorly and gave up eight runs?
I mean, maybe not.
Like again, I said that Lindor home run was important simply because that was essentially
the game winner here, uh, putting the, putting the Mets up by four, uh, over the diamondbacks,
uh, and there are three runs.
But also you have to question if a huge deficit in a game like,
like this is so demoralizing to the offense that they kind of give up after that third inning,
right? Archer, are we, are we still doing phrasing? I just was wondering if we're still doing
phrasing. Archer in the chat says it's always games after a day off. That's a great point,
especially for the offense. The offense just kind of comes up flat after a day off. And
it's hard to explain. Obviously, I mean, there's travel involved in this kind of game. There's other
factors that are impacted and they don't always come out soft and flat after a off day but it does
seem to be the case and again that could be something if we me and me and kevin we're going to
play the game of how are we going to blame this on troy lovelo uh and i know that thunderbolt
already has 20 ways to blame it on tori lavalo ready to go but yeah maybe that's it i don't know
I don't know what the, I don't know what to say here in this one.
This one again, I still feel like this game is, falls on the pitching, falls on Eduardo Rodriguez.
I don't know what to do about Ryan Nelson.
I don't know what to do about this team at times.
And I don't know what to do about Erod.
He is, it's the reason why when asked on Mailbag Monday about the anxiety level that I, that I have for each pitcher, it's a nine for me with Erod.
Because you just have no idea what you're going to get out of him.
And in this case, again, you could eat.
easily say that the deficit that they were in being down eight to nothing is enough for the
offense to kind of be demoralized. We know the answer backs have answered back. We know this team
has scored a ton of runs when they've been down and especially late. So it's not out of
the question to suggest that maybe this offense could have could have picked up. But there's just some
days. Again, with this one, I had my guy Noah asking me after the third inning, why were they leaving
Erod in? And it was like, well, when they're down six to nothing,
does it even matter at that point, right?
Like you almost start chalking it up to a loss early and you can't really sacrifice
the rest of the series or this road trip considering that things get difficult with the Phillies
ahead.
You know, you can't sacrifice all of, you know, this, this bullpen in this one game for the
rest of the series, especially a bullpen that needed some rest.
But at death, this was just one that you flush away.
I don't know.
We do got to give out a king snake.
and despite the fact that I should give it out to Ryan Nelson because he deserves it the most,
we're still going to give it to Rhaldo Pardomo because Pardomo was two for four tonight with a double.
And he continues to be good for this team in that leadoff spot.
He continues to be good for the Diamondbacks in the absence of Catelle Marte,
who at this point really can't come back fast enough.
But Pardomo this season has had some pretty good splits.
and again he's just been
you know batting
batting in that leadoff spot
he's been providing some production he's still
not as good as when he's batting ninth though
and the OPS determines that
for sure the later
the later Perdomo bats in the lineup
the more productive he is
hopefully the Diamondbacks can get him back
in that role soon
Cotel Marte returning to this team
which is supposed to come here
in this next series against the Phillies
he just can't come fast enough
like I said in that
backfield game. He had two home runs. He already looks like he's ready to come back. And with the
offense performing the way they are right now, they, Cotel can't come back fast enough, quite frankly.
I think he'll be a big boost to this team. I know he's not necessarily a vocal leader,
but we know that he is a leader for this team. And quite frankly, he was an MVP candidate last year.
The Diamondbacks offense really feels like that has been a big part of what has been missing from this
team is, you know,
Cattel there batting second and Pardomo back in the ninth,
you know,
ninth hole.
But we'll see.
We'll see what happens with this team going forward and how Cotel impacts it.
Hopefully they can,
you know,
have a better showing here against the Mets.
I think we do have the probable pitching graphic for this series here,
Kevin.
Yeah,
we got Corbyn's going up against lefty.
Is it Brandon Waddell,
I believe?
He was just called up by the Mets.
He has not pitched.
this season yet at a major league level.
And then we got Zach Gallin going in game three against who is still scheduled,
Kodi Isenga,
but peace Vyoshi will probably come in here and tell us once again that he's not
pitching in that game,
which fine by me,
fine by me if he's not pitching in that game.
But so far,
yeah,
that looks like that's going to be the case.
Let's throw that probable pitching graphic up again because again,
And this is one of those things that we're calling him Corbenson Burms Gardner and the chat.
And that just makes me laugh.
Corbin Burns hasn't been great for this team.
Also hasn't been terrible.
He just hopefully can have, you know, the kind of start getting on track and having the kind of performances we really need to see out of them.
And this Mets team is very tough.
So it's going to be a big challenge for him.
And then Zach Gallen, similar situation, right?
We know what both of these guys are capable of.
We know that they both can perform at an elite level.
We're just not seeing that out of them right now at this time, unfortunately.
So, but we do have more.
We're going to talk more about the numbers from this game and how infuriating the Diamondbacks being out hit by one hit, but losing by this margin really is.
And we're going to also talk about our favorite Tom Hanks movies because he was in attendance.
And Kevin tried to tell me that he's never seen a Tom Hanks movie or something crazy like that.
And I was going to lose my mind because I already had enough of that crap with Jesse, who's never seen a movie.
And I don't, I don't need another one of these.
I don't need another one of these guys making me feel old, making me feel like they, like, oh, Tom Hanks movies aren't important.
He is a, he is a Hollywood treasure, sir.
If there's any old movies you should be watching, all right, well, we're going to get into it.
I said none of this nonsense.
We'll get into it.
We're also going to get an update from the N-Hell West.
All that.
At least two of those teams are playing each other.
So one of them has to lose, right?
Right?
we'll talk about it on the other side of this break don't go anywhere you're watching the phnx diamond back show

a z dot gov well kevin i don't really want to look at the numbers from this game because they're bad
bad numbers bad juju but let's look at those numbers anyway because they are presented by our
friends at desert financial uh and they they they try to make sure that our numbers are right even when
we go really quickly after the end of the game like this we almost decided to just go ahead and start
this game during like the eighth inning or ninth inning.
My, my, I was going to call it if the Mets reached 10 runs.
Luckily they didn't.
And here we are again, entirely too late for some of you.
But the Mets outscore the Diamondbacks eight to three.
They out hit the Diamondbacks nine to eight.
How?
What?
Runners in scoring position.
Diamondbacks were one for 10.
One for 10.
One for 10.
The Mets two for two.
They took,
they took advantage of both of their scoring opportunity.
Mets had four extra base hits with three of them being home runs.
Diamondbacks had two, just the two doubles there.
Expected batting average, 351 for the Mets, 277 for the Diamondbacks.
So even the expected batting average really couldn't help us out in this one.
But yeah, the Diamondbacks overall did not do a great job of, you know, again,
putting together those scoring opportunities.
That's kind of the tail of the offense in this one.
when you see that they were one for 10,
any opportunity that they had with the runner in scoring position,
unable to take advantage,
unable to string together those big innings.
And again,
a big part of that is this unfortunate gap there
in the middle of the lineup right now that exists.
Perhaps at this point,
you know,
you consider making some changes,
but we're also talking about,
you know,
this being a need on April 29th, right?
It's very early in the season.
I just don't know how long we can keep that narrative going for, right?
Gino, once again, shows that he can all of a sudden wake up and become an unstoppable monster.
But how, how it's more about the falling back to sleep part that I'm concerned with
and how long these gaps, these slumps last in between his brilliant performances like he had this past weekend, right?
And again, four home runs is historic.
It's nice.
I'd much rather see that performance spread out
over multiple games that happening all in one,
especially in a loss,
that it ended up meaning nothing, right?
So consistency would be the key here.
And I don't know.
I mean, the Tori Lavello takes a tremendous amount of flack
as do the pitching coaches, you know,
the first base, third base coach,
you know, you got Brian Kaplan,
you got Sean Larkin in there as a new third base coach.
There was a lot of talk,
especially after the conversation Dalton and I had yesterday about Christian Walker being a missing piece of the of the defense for this team.
That, you know, Tori Perry's Cheek, Tony Perez Chica is an equally big missing piece over there at third base for the Diamondbacks.
And again, this is no disrespect to Brian Kaplan, the new pitching coach or Sean Larkin over there at third.
It's Kevin asked it earlier.
Like it just, do we miss Brent Strom?
I don't know.
Because right now, this starting rotation, at least, is,
pitching very much like the starting rotation did when Brent Strom was here, right? So,
I mean, it's not like there's this dramatic difference in performance right now. I don't know
if that's necessarily the answer. Baseball is a weird game, right? Because it happens every day.
The adjustments, the coaching, they're small, they're minor from one day to another. It's,
it's not like football or other games where you can completely map out a new game plan, right? Sometimes
the third base coach is responsible for defensive positioning,
as well as what's going on the base path.
So maybe a lot of this blame could fall on Sean Larkin
with the way this team has been performing lately.
Or again,
maybe it's just these growing pains that both the pitching staff
and the position players have with having a new coach
that they haven't, you know, kind of worked with for very long.
Time was a factor here for Tony Perish Chica.
But again, tonight's game wasn't really a matter of defense
unless you're talking about the amazing defense that the Mets played.
Tonight's game was about Erod, basically having a terrible night.
And again, this is just a one-off performance,
but it just goes to the inconsistency that the Diamondbacks have experienced
with their starting pitching this year.
And their ERA sinks gets worse.
It sinks lower for the MLB.
And probably right now sits, you know, again, in the top, bottom five in baseball.
matter of fact I'm going to take a moment to look that up but while I do that I will say that
again a lot of things didn't work for this team tonight so hopefully we'll see them come out
differently in game two not after an off day not after going to throw and have a catch and Central
Park why am I stuck on that Kevin I need you're a bad guy now you're a heel does that make me a bad
guy I don't think so am I bad guy now I think if you're already a heel
you don't really get the benefit of the doubt.
This is crazy to me.
This is crazy to me that I don't want him to go have a catch.
Sorry, don't want a cat.
No more catches.
I'm taking that away from this team.
All right.
I'm looking up starting pitching ERA after tonight's performance.
Oh, not in the bottom five, but close.
At 4.56, the Diamondbacks are 24th in Major League Baseball and starting pitching ERA.
Haza.
Right under the Toronto Blue Jays.
Do you think those numbers, obviously they got to come back down to Earth a little bit.
How far do you think they come back down to Earth?
And how high slash how low do you think the Diamondbacks ERA could be at the end of the season with what you know now?
Obviously, it's a tough prediction, but just like your gut reaction.
Oh, man, I don't have an idea anymore.
I wish I could answer that.
I think that, you know, my expectations were that the Diamondbacks were going to have a sub three, five ERA.
I would think that the Diamondbacks would have been in the top 10 in Major League Baseball,
somewhere right around where the Astros are at right now, 3.57.
And instead, their ERA sits at, you know, an entire run above that, 4.56.
And Diamondbacks right now are not doing a great job.
Tanner's right, though, in regards to Eduardo Rodriguez.
He said he's been giving up way too much hard contact.
It's not just one-off.
And you're right, because even in his better,
performances, it's not like Eduardo Rodriguez
is going out there and
delivering tremendous results unless
you're talking about the strikeouts, right?
Again, I don't care about
strikeout numbers. I don't want pitchers that strike
guys out. I would prefer
a solid ground ball pitcher
at times to strikeouts, right?
But I don't know.
I think, yeah, I'm with 2BMC.
A sub 4 ERA
would make me happy with
the way we know that this offense can perform
with what we've seen this year.
I think that the Diamondbacks could win with a sub four ERA from their, you know, starting pitching staff.
They're not getting that right now, though, unfortunately.
So, but we have more to talk about.
And that more is that we are holding a Diamondbacks watch party this Sunday,
probably in honor of Cotel Marte returning, right, Kevin?
Like, this is, this is the Cotel Marte return watch party.
Can it be a throw together with Ginkle and Puck as well?
Yeah.
Yeah, we can welcome everybody back.
It's a celebration for AJ Puck not having Tommy John surgery.
Ring the bell.
Ring the bell for AJ Puck not having Tommy John surgery.
Ring the bell for Cotell Marte returning.
And yeah, let's ring the bell for Ginklemania coming back.
There you go.
But you can join Derek and the P.HNX crew.
That's what the copy says.
I was supposed to apparently say me, but join Derek and the PHNX crew.
For a Diamondbacks watch party out at Heel of River Wild Horse Pass.
as the sun's, sun snakes.
I've been used to doing
way too many sun's watch parties.
The snakes take on the Philadelphia Phillies
this Sunday. May 4th,
we might be doing a live show from there.
Every schedule permitting.
We might be doing our normal Friday show
from next week doing it on Sunday.
And we might,
we might just have a special appearance via,
via what, Zoom?
What do we say now?
We used to say via satellite,
but we don't say via satellite.
via the Matrix, via the blog of Spheres and Internets,
we have a special appearance from one,
Jesse Friedman, this Sunday.
So make sure to join us for that.
RSVP is free.
No, you don't have to pay to come.
You just have to let us know you're coming.
So we know how many people are joining us.
But make sure to do that.
Make sure to join us this Sunday.
It'll be great.
I know we haven't had a chance to hang out,
do very many of these watch parties.
So this is going to be fun.
Great.
It'll be great to see all of you guys.
Tanner is giving an update
on AJ Puck.
So probably at least six weeks for AJ Puck.
I'd say that's a fairly safe estimate,
especially considering he's not even throwing it this time.
So they're waiting until he's asymptomatic
and then he'll start his throwing program.
So very, very good news.
And probably one of the rare times
that hearing a player needed second and third opinions
ends up positively like this,
or at least without the end result being still needing Tommy John surgery.
But we have an update here on the N. Hell West.
things aren't getting
things aren't getting any easier here for the diamondbacks
at the very least the Giants do take on the Padres
tonight and one of those teams has to lose
a game right so there's that
the Giants are just playing some incredible baseball
right now the inevitable
happened and the Dodgers do now have
a share of first place
they also have a game tonight
the Rockies meanwhile
have made history Kevin
they have made
National League history
at 4 and 24, the Rockies have the worst 28 games start in National League
baseball history.
Does that get a Glockenspiel?
Oh, yeah, let's hit him with the Glock and Schville.
That's far too magical for what that actually was.
But my God, talk about things being bad for the Rockies.
Meanwhile, got to hope that the Padres can,
can, you know, take down the Giants in a couple of these games.
This Giants team has just been very good.
You got to tip your cap to them.
It feels like they are the team that's going to, you know, come down to Earth.
The Diamondbacks have been that team at times.
It started off hot, but then cooled down.
We need that out of them.
And also, again, this division is just incredible.
It's just incredible right now.
And the Diamondbacks are not playing very good baseball.
Tonight, they definitely got outplayed and outperformed by the Mets.
That's all you can really say.
I mean, their defense was incredible tonight.
And you could tell it really just let the balloon,
let the air out of the Diamondbacks balloon offensively.
But we do have a funny thing that happened there in the fifth inning
because this game got so bad,
especially there in the fifth that Bert,
Bert and the boys there in the broadcast team had to start discussing
the fact that Tom Hanks was in attendance.
Now,
there was also a very important
Knicks game going on
not only right
across town but also
on the TV next to ours
while we were watching the Diamondbacks game tonight. Noah
a big Detroit Pistons fan
gets to watch his team crash and burn
in real time right in front of us. They won
tonight. Did they win?
Yes, 106, 103. They're just putting off the
inevitable but there were far
more celebrities in attendance
at the Knicks game obviously due to the
importance of that game. But Tom Hanks
a national treasure was in attendance at the Diamondbacks Mets game.
And one Kevin Thomas proceeded to fire me up and make me feel old by telling me that Tom Hanks' movies to him were like Beyonce songs at a concert?
Is that what you said?
That like you don't know if you know them, but once you start reading them, you know them?
It's not exactly what I said.
I mean, it was something like that.
It was something along those.
That made me angry.
My point was, it was very upsetting.
Is that when someone says, hey, do you want to go to a Beyonce concert?
You might not necessarily know all the songs you're going to know.
But once you get to looking through her discography, you're like, oh, my God, I know all of these.
Right?
I feel like falling in love.
That's not your first thing that you think when you think going to Beyonce concert.
When you asked me, how many Tom Hanks movies can you list?
I was like, oh, I don't know off the head.
I was asking you your favorite Tom Hanks movies and you were like, I don't think I've even seen them.
You started with Captain Phillips.
My exact words were, like, you're asking me for a top five.
And I said, I don't know how many I've seen.
And then I start going through the list.
It's crazy.
It's crazy.
I had seen like eight Tom Hanks movies.
Eight.
Yeah.
The man has an entire catalog that should be celebrated.
And you've seen eight movies.
I got a Pokemon, watch them all.
That's what I got to do.
Yeah.
Yes.
Yes.
If there is somebody you should watch all of his movies, it's Tom Hanks.
Every single one of them, even splash.
Go see sinners, folks.
Yeah.
I heard that movie was good.
So just in an effort to list what movies he has seen of Tom Banks's,
we put together our definitive top six list.
We went with six.
I saw you added a sixth one.
I just listed all the ones that I'd actually seen.
Oh, okay.
So it's only six then.
I can, after you give your rankings, I can list.
I can rank mine.
Okay.
I gave my definitive ranking here.
I added a sixth one.
It didn't make the top five.
So I guess as an honorable mention, it is the, it is the, a beautiful day in the neighborhood movie, which I enjoy quite a bit.
I thought he was excellent in that.
But my definitive top five, starting from five and going up, five is big because I was a kid in the 80s and who wouldn't want to all of a sudden be an adult body making toys in New York City.
Four, toy story.
I know that's crazy low.
It probably should be higher.
Maybe it should be three because I have Apollo 13 at three.
So maybe Apollo 13 at 4, Toy Story at 3, really.
Toy Story definitely means more to me than Apollo 13, but that was a fantastic movie.
Then I had a hard time with this because Forrest Gump is Tom Hanks' best movie.
It's an amazing performance.
And I watched it a million times in my lifetime.
However, a league of their own is quite possibly one of my favorite baseball movies ever made.
And Tom Hanks was incredible in that, especially his rant at the umpire, which I, I, I
tend to create, I reenact it with my dogs at least once a week. So there's a hard one too there
for me. I guess if I'm talking about performances, him as Jimmy would be a league of there,
would be two, and then Forrest Gump at number one. What do you guys got here? Ernesto in the chat
says, big and cast away. Those are good just on the outside. He says for me, saving Private Ryan,
a league of their own, Forrest Gump, Toy Story, Apollo 13, there we go. CNH camp, Road to Perdition.
was an incredible performance by Tom Hanks.
For sure, Tyler Hurd, catch me if you can.
That is another amazing movie.
That's just a great movie.
That's a great cast overall.
No Green Mile.
Yeah, I mean, Tom Hanks was really good in Green Mile, but again, I guess I got to cut it to
the movies that I love.
And these are the Tom Hanks movies I love.
What do you got, Kevin, for the movies you've seen?
All right.
The six movies you've seen of Kevin.
I've ranked the movies I've seen.
Let's start with number six.
I have cast away at six.
Okay.
Okay.
Wilson.
I have Captain Phillips at five.
I have saving Private Ryan at four.
I have Toy Story at three.
Classic.
And I'm a young guy.
Gotta love Toy Story.
The Da Vinci Code.
Way too high.
That's a crazy.
I just loved that movie.
That's a crazy eye.
That's crazy high.
That's on my X scale.
It's fine.
And then catch me if you can is my number one.
Yeah.
Catch me if you can.
It's a great,
great movie.
Great movie.
Oh, man.
Well,
I mean, you still make me feel old.
That's okay.
You know, I know that now I have homework.
I have a lot of homework to do.
Have you never seen a league of their own?
I need you to watch that movie and report back.
Look, we used to do this thing where I made Jesse go watch movies.
We called it Jesse hasn't seen it because Jesse hadn't seen anything.
It didn't matter what it was.
Baseball movies, though, Jesse had seen.
So we might have to start.
Kevin hasn't seen it.
And you need you come back with a book report.
at least on a league of their own.
We're going to, we're going to say, I had a conversation, by the way, with a friend of mine that, like, I realized how much baseball movies impacted me being a fan of baseball, right?
And I often wonder that, uh, that if I grew up now as a younger person, if I would be into baseball nearly as much, right?
Yeah.
When I was, you know, when I was a adolescent, when I was in that like 10 to 15 year old range, there's a lot of good.
baseball movies that came out. Not to mention there were classics that already had existed.
But there were a lot of good movies for kids. I talk about how much I love a league of
their own, but obviously rookie of the years, Sanlott. There's just, the list goes on and on and
on for how many league of their own. And I watched League of Their Own in the theater as a young
man. I really enjoyed it. We got some super chats here. Jim Bridger says not wiping or chagrin or
changing undies until we win a series. I thought it worked the other way, Jim. I think
thought we just didn't do that when we won.
That's gross.
Let's see.
A piece of Yoshi says, can we discuss Tori having Marillo up, not McGuff?
Great point.
Great point.
However, if Marillo was up, that would have been only for the instance where the
Diamondbacks scored six runs in the top of the ninth, right?
The Mets would only get to a bat in the bottom of the night if the Diamondbacks come
back and at least tie it.
So would you rather have Marilla warming up in that instance?
instant rather than McGuff.
Maybe you were looking at more of him coming in than the eighth inning when he was warming up.
So that might be a good point.
No reason at all to pitch Morello there in that, you know, five run deficit, six run deficit.
Our guy Tyler Hurd said, so Derek, one team did drop City Connects finally.
That is correct.
The Chicago White Sox finally dropped their Bulls jersey that we knew was coming for a long time,
which means now just one last big box.
stands between us and our purple city connectors.
He's coming out.
Can't wait for that.
We just have the Miami Marlins who still need to drop theirs.
That should be coming soon.
And then again, the Diamondbacks date, what was it, May 9th, I believe, is the scheduled
date for them to debut on field.
Still looking at May 5th, probably around there for the Diamondbacks to bring them out.
Derek, can I even read this?
Is that even allowed?
No.
I don't think so.
I don't think so.
BCSC, we're going to need you to clean up your chats when it comes to our sweet baby Noah.
Okay.
He's an innocent, except this weekend.
This weekend, Noah was very much, not innocent.
I'm not allowed to tell you that story, but he can if you ask him enough.
That's all I got for tonight.
And it's probably far too much with the way that this Diamondbacks team perform.
Kevin, did I make any mistakes this evening?
I think that was a pretty flawless performance.
certainly better than e-rods tonight.
Oh.
I think that that, I think you,
you know, avoided hard contact.
Too soon?
Uh, not soon enough.
We're an hour.
We're about an hour and I think we did just fine.
Um, and I'll,
ew, Jim.
Ew.
Yeah, no, uh, no.
No, Jim.
Again, I'm not, I'm not letting you animals talk about my sweet baby Noah that way.
Also, rumors are swirling.
Did the chat's obsession with the cactus light ruin the
diamond backs.
I feel, well, like, what is, is it maybe my fault?
No, I think it's the chat's fault.
They're not focusing enough on the baseball and the debacks can feel it.
I mean, I tried my best.
You see how buried away it is back there, right?
If I could.
Look at LG3.
I don't know who keeps putting it back on the set.
I keep removing it from the set.
I want,
I want none of the focus on the cactus light.
I don't like how much it distracts you all from, from really what's going on here,
which is the diamond back sliding significantly, but hopefully they can bounce back tomorrow
against the AAA pitcher, right?
I mean, that's a big opportunity for the offense to come out against Waddell and, you
know, have a big day, right?
He actually had a really good ERA for their AAA team, so that's concerning.
And we also know that the diamond backs tend to make guys that they shouldn't make look good,
they make them look very good.
So hopefully that won't be the case in game two tomorrow.
Make sure you guys join us this Sunday because we're going to have a blast out there at Healer Resorts and Casinos.
And guess what?
We're going to have a fun time, win or lose, right?
Yeah, this is, T-backs against AAA pitchers.
Good joke, Derek.
See, Michael gets it.
He knows what happens when we play AAA pitchers.
But, yeah, really what we need is Corbin Burns and Zach Gallen to finish off this series strong and both have good performances.
Diamondbacks need their starting pitching to get back on track.
And right now, it's not.
I don't know what collectively goes wrong with the group.
But again, that's that might be something that you could definitely start to question the coaching on, right?
I mean, again, the only thing is that this is a new pitching coach this year versus last year in Brian Kaplan.
But again, if these, if these guys continue to as a group be bad, then it might be game planning.
Maybe it's something else.
Maybe it's the biomechanics.
Maybe their biomechanics aren't in alignment.
but whatever the case may be, they all need to get on the same page that Brandon Fott is currently
on because he is awesome for this team.
But we will be back tomorrow with another post game show to make sure join us for that.
In the meantime, make sure you guys all follow us on Twitter.
I am at cap underscore caveman with a K.

and Facebook.
Do we have any more super chats there, Keb, before we get out here?
Beconc clearly was trying to clarify something.
They said, Noah is mine forever, babe.
It's problematic. It's problematic.
But anyway, I don't know.
Noah might be into it. I don't know.
We'll see.
But again, we appreciate you guys.
Transonic wants a Diamondback-shaped light.
Yeah.
I mean, we do have a U of A one, right?
We have an ASU one.
We have almost every team around here.
We just don't have a Diamondbacks one.
Yeah, the U of A one is drastically bigger than the ASU one, by the way.
I don't know what to say about that.
I have nothing. I have no comment on that.
Speaks for itself.
Well, that's all we got.
But again, join us tomorrow for another postgame show.
We got one coming on Thursday as well.
And on Friday, we'll be bringing you a 2 p.m.
show to preview the weekends game.
So make sure to join us for that.
Hopefully by then we will be talking about Cotel Marte returning this team.
Because boy, the Diamondbacks, need him badly.
So again, we thank you guys so much for your time.
