Oh, I'm sorry.
I was deciding on which alcohol to drink tonight after another heartbreaking loss by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
But luckily, Jesse Friedman, who doesn't have the best win-loss record when it comes to being here on postgame shows, is here to provide a little therapy.
We're going to talk about this game and why this extra inning's loss, despite the Diamondbacks, kind of being blank there by Yamamoto, who is still so heartbreaking.
Don't you go anywhere?
We're starting in 30 seconds.
God, I hate that music, and it feels extra salty after tonight's loss.
Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondback show right here on PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX.
I got my guy, large, intimate Kevin Thomas on the ones and twos tonight.
And we both sat here in heartbreaking fashion and watched our excitement turned to horror as the Diamondbacks lost tonight by a score of four to three in extra innings to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Of course, you know what we do around here.
First, we got to tell you that this show is brought to you by our friends of Bet365.
Game time, go download that Bet365 app and use our code of PHNX 365.
When you sign up, get yourself some bonus bets when you do.
Of course, go over to game time.
Use our code of PHNX there.
You'll get yourself $20 off your first order.
We do have our, our guy from Snake's territory, which can be found on YouTube and everywhere you get your podcast,
the one, the only, Thunderstick, Jesse Friedman, Jesse, or Shanks.
Should I say, Mr. Friedman, Professor Friedman, Dr. Friedman,
Dr. Friedman sounds right, because we need you here for some therapy after yet another heartbreaking loss that, to be honest,
here's what I equate this to, Jesse.
I used to watch a lot of shows on HBO.
I know that you're unfamiliar with, but these shows tend to do something,
which was, you know, like kill off main characters all the time.
And I knew these shows were going to do these things.
and I knew they were going to break my heart and make me sad because they were going to do it to the characters I was most attached to.
Yet I still found myself time and time again going back to watch these shows.
And that is what the Diamondback season has felt like because despite the fact that I know things are not going to go our way,
especially late in games with the way that this bullpen has been performing,
I still find myself believing and feeling like the Diamondbacks were going to win this one after they got themselves a late lead.
And in what looked like a moment that they were going to stun the Dodgers in the ninth and the tenth inning.
Derek, I was I was ready to come on here and potentially talk about the Diamondbacks bullpen, like winning them a game, not single-handedly, but like playing a really big win, a really big role in a win, right?
Like that's what the narrative would have been.
Obviously, Corby and Carole and Gabrielle Moreno, like those home runs would have taken center stage, but a really big, a really big role.
subplot would have been that the diamondbacks bullpen outperformed the Dodgers bullpen.
They put up four straight scoreless innings heading into that 10th inning with Shelby Miller on the
mound. And then reality set in as it often has for for the 2025 diamond backs.
Well, and this feels like to me, I guess me saying that, you're right. The bullpen deserves some
credit. It's Shelby Miller, who unfortunately had a bad outing. A guy.
who has been solid for this team all year long,
yet also has been shaky in the closer role,
like hasn't been, you know, the reliable pitcher.
And, and, and, I mean, again, maybe,
maybe it's just this team is snake bitten when it comes to that closer role.
Maybe it's the fact that it's, it's just such a high pressure, high leverage role.
This is a good Dodgers team.
It's not like he was facing, you know, just, just anybody out there.
I do think that the Diamondbacks,
maybe went a little too far on, you know, walking guys.
I get it.
You have open bases, things like that.
You don't want to let an Otani beat you.
You don't want to let, you know, obviously a Freddie Freeman beat you.
However, you know, you did put yourself kind of in that position as well.
Like it didn't really matter.
The mistakes made there late by Shelby Miller and, you know, obviously the way that that went felt like it was inevitable.
But early on, this team wasn't able to score or do any.
anything against Yamamoto.
So to be fair, it felt pretty good that they were in that position.
I think I was telling Kevin that as we were in the bottom of the 10th inning.
I was like, you know, I don't feel great about this, even with a two run lead.
However, I'm proud of the fact that this team that, that again, kind of got carved up today by Yamamoto,
was able to come out and do something late and, you know, put, give themselves a lead and
an opportunity to win this game.
There's no questioning the resiliency of this team, right?
That's something that is well established with the Diamondbacks at this point.
And even the haters out there, even people who have been generally very negative about this team,
I think everyone can acknowledge that the Diamondbacks continue fighting even when they're in tough spots.
And that's something you have to appreciate about this team.
On the flip side, that often results in games like tonight.
night where a game that felt like you, that you felt like you weren't going to win,
you actually wind up being in good position to win only to wind up losing in what feels
like even more devastating fashion than if the Diamondbacks had maybe just lost this game
one to nothing, right? This is this is the Diamondbacks in a nutshell, Derek. We've seen this
time and time and time again over the past few years. And yeah, the events of that 10th inning,
as you mentioned there were very fascinating.
The Diamondbacks, you could argue,
kind of did do this to themselves in a way
with intentionally walking both Otani and Freeman.
The Dodgers, of course, wind up winning the game
because of a hit-by pitch with the bases loaded in a sack fly.
You know, those base runners that scored,
you could trace that back to the two intentional walks.
But also, the debacks have had situations in the past
where they did pitch to Shohei Otani,
and he wound up beating them
and they looked kind of silly in the end for doing that.
So getting the first batter out
was going to be really, really important.
It's always important,
but it was going to be really important
in a situation like this
with the lineup flipping back to the top after Edmund.
And once Tommy Edmund, you know,
doinked that double down the left field line,
it was like, all right, buckle in.
It's going to be tough.
You know, maybe the debacks can still win this game,
but it'd be tough to do it in 10 innings at that point.
Jesse, I need to say something, but I feel like I need you to like earmuffs it real fast
because I just need to throw out there that Will Smith is a bitch and he leaned,
he let that pitch hit him, didn't do anything to get out of the way infuriated me.
I know that if I was a fan of that team, I would want the batter to do the same thing
in a basis loaded situation.
Get that run in.
Let's tie this game up.
But I just hated how the way that went.
I hated how he just kind of stood there and let the ball hit him.
And I again, it sucks that it went down that way.
I think in regards to what you're saying, yes, I probably would have rather just lost this game one to nothing, to be fair.
I think that this was a great start by both starting pitchers.
Ryan Nelson did an outstanding job.
Yamamoto was incredible and he deserves his flowers for this outing that he had.
And now it's just a no decision on his part.
But I will say that overall, I feel like, you know, the way that the Dodgers won sucks.
and Shelby Miller was not good and he is to blame for this.
That's another thing that sucks is that you kind of lump the whole bullpen
into to one when you say the bullpen.
But again,
the bullpen tonight was pretty good besides Shelby Miller,
right?
But the way that they won,
you know,
the sack fly,
the walking batters,
the hit by the pitch.
Like it just that that whole thing leaves a bad taste in your mouth
overall.
And I think what also sucks is that they made me believe,
Jesse. They made me believe that they were going to do this again. It was a huge home run. Gabby Moreno
scores the Diamondbacks first run of the game with a solo home run off Tanner Scott in the ninth inning,
which alone in itself is impressive. However, then you got Corbyn Carroll coming back in the 10th inning
with that ghost runner on and he hits a home run, a two run shot that puts the diamond backs up three to one.
Just huge home runs off of one of the best closers in the game. And I do have to do this because we
it on social media, but I really do feel like Dalton Feely kind of manifested this, Jesse,
on Monday show.
This is what Dalton had to say then.
What I'm dreaming for this series, I want Corbyn Carroll, who did struggle in that four-game
set versus the Dodgers earlier this month.
I would love for him to hit a three-run, like a massive three-run home runoff of Tanner Scott.
Tanner Scott being one of the hardest lefties to face in baseball in the bullpen,
Carol being one of the best left-handed batters in baseball.
it would be amazing to see Corbyn Carroll take him deep and have a Otani-esque moment and flip the script on the Dodgers.
That's what I'm trying to put into this world.
Derek, that would be electric.
He said three run, home run, Derek.
He was wrong.
Why are we impressed?
And he hit it in the 10th and he instead of the 9th.
What a dummy that Dalton feel he is.
The guy doesn't know ball, obviously, Jesse.
But yeah, that's incredible that he said that to me just on Monday.
The Diamondbacks do drop to 26 and 23.
three the series now overall this season is tied three games apiece not that tomorrow's game is
the actual tiebreaker but it does feel with how closely these teams are matching up with each other
that every game is very important obviously the diamondbacks want to go out there and win their
eighth series of the season and especially a series here against the dodgers but uh it also could
have you know obviously big ramifications later on in the season as well i think it's it's
also worth pointing out, and this is kind of in Shelby Miller's defense tonight, that this was
his third consecutive game that he's worked in. And you could argue that he really shouldn't
have had to work in the game on Monday, right? The Diamondbacks had a six-run lead, Ryan Thompson,
who has really struggled lately, tried to get out of the ninth inning without things getting
too interesting. And Toro Lavello decided that he had seen enough. He wanted, he wanted Shelby
Miller to get in the game and get the diamond backs out of there before the lineup turned.
We saw what happens, what can happen when the Dodgers lineup turns late in the game tonight.
And so Tori made that decision.
And it was only four pitches that Shelby wound up throwing yesterday, but it still contributes,
right?
He still was getting warmed up.
And then, you know, you get in the game, you're throwing four pitches in a high stress
environment.
And any pitcher, you know, back to back is already tough.
Back to back to back is really a.
tall ass for any pitcher. And this is just kind of the reality of the Diamondbacks bullpen right
now. You can't really fault Tori for going to Shelby Miller on a third consecutive day. I think
there would be riots in downtown Phoenix right now if he hadn't. But at the same time,
you know, Kevin Ginkle, this was his fourth game in five days. Like that's a big ass as well. So
yeah, this is just the reality of the debacks bullpen right now where they're having to really work
these guys hard and that's going to only contribute to the bullpen struggling all the more.
Yep, absolutely. You're absolutely right about that, Jesse. We also do have some updates here from
Reno, Justin Martinez made his rehab start tonight. He threw some pretty solid pitches,
some very J-Mart-esque pitches. So there could be some relief here soon on the horizon for the
bullpen and perhaps J-Mart slots in to that closer role that right now that Shelby
Miller's kind of taken over. You have to think that, right? Justin Martinez basically had the
closer role before he got hurt. I know there was a little bit of mixing and matching, but we saw him in
that role a number of times. And yeah, he topped out at 101.5 in his outing for Reno tonight.
looking at the locations of those pitches wasn't necessarily too, too sharp from a location standpoint.
But the velocity, I think, is what you're looking for more than anything else.
May Mart is certainly, even at his best, going to miss his spots from time to time.
So him throwing 101.5 is a really, really good thing.
And I think there's a pretty good chance that he will return to the Diamondbacks for the weekend series against the Cardinals.
Well, by the way, in that start,
Eumen Lynn had another great start tonight for the Reno Aces.
He went five innings pitch, gave up two earn runs, had five strikeouts.
Not long outings, Jesse, but again, for the PCL,
you see a lot of one earn runs, a lot of two earn runs from Yumen Lin.
And that, I know we discussed it at one point.
You kind of gave me hope like the Diamondbacks did tonight a little bit,
because you were basically suggesting it's not that far-fetched to think that we
I might see Lynn this season.
And I feel like with some of the Diamondback struggles,
and again, you don't see him go very long.
Typically, he only goes about five innings.
But it feels like he might end up being a candidate at some point to maybe get called up
and helped this bullpen out potentially.
I think it's possible.
I mean, he's got a 270 ERA down in Reno now, which is pretty dang impressive.
You know, we had 13 whiffs in the game tonight, five strikeouts,
as you mentioned.
So if he keeps pitching like that,
I think he might force the Diamondbacks hand a little bit
the next time they need a long man or a spot starter
or something like that.
Well, we are going to talk a little,
well, before that, hold on.
We can't move on because as much as I wanted to give it to Ryan Nelson,
I got to give credit where credit is due.
I got to give our king snake out, Jesse.
And I'm going to give our king snake out to Gabriel Moreno.
He was one for three tonight with a walk,
but that home run was huge because the diamondbacks don't get into extra innings without Gabby
hitting that home run.
And again, he has been hitting the ball well lately.
Even in his outs, we've seen some hard, hard hit balls, some good exit Velos.
And again, Corby and Gabby kind of, you could have swapped either one of those guys for the king snake tonight because they stepped up big late.
And again, these guys, they love to do it against the Dodgers, especially Gabby Moreno.
He has just stepped into that Christian Walker role, it feels like, of the guy that has no fear against Los Angeles.
He's different against the Dodgers.
The numbers very clearly bear that out.
He now has hit seven of his 20 career home runs, including the postseason against the Dodgers.
That is 35% of his career home runs have come against one team.
Hat tip to our good friend Michael McDermott for that stat over on Twitter.
Yeah, Gabby Moreno just, I don't know what it is, but at Dodger Stadium against, against that team, he just looks, he looks different out there.
And both of these home runs, the last couple of days, have been pulled in the air.
The types of batted balls that we really haven't seen from Gabby Moreno at all, all season, a really, really good sign.
And his bat continues to come to life for them.
Corbyn Carroll also kept getting hurt in this game.
he got a ball fouled off his knee in the first inning, Jesse, that it definitely reminded me of a family guy sketch with how long it went on for.
And I felt like it was irresponsible at one point for Max Esposito to not come out there and check on him.
I don't know.
I thought he died with that foul, when that ball fouled off of his knee.
And then he gets hit by a pitch in the sixth inning that they don't even call as a hit by pitch.
They just say he swung at it despite the fact that he got.
hit in the arm very hard.
There was no doubt about it.
Like there was the umpires sitting there going, yep, you got hit.
You swung though, so that's not a hit by pitch.
It was wild.
It was a wild night.
And then he still somehow shakes it off to hit that home run in the 10th inning.
Corby and Carroll, incredible 15 home runs this year, Jesse.
Can't say enough about how surprising his power continues to be and consistent,
consistently too.
There have been little stretches here and there.
it was like, all right, Corvin's starting to look, you know, a little lost at the plate.
You know, granted, like, we're not talking long stretches here.
We're talking like two games or maybe he looks like that.
But he was 0 for four with a couple of strikeouts going into that at bat.
And left on left against Tanner Scott, it doesn't get much more challenging than that.
And then Corbyn Carroll goes up there and takes a fastball that was on the outer third of the plate
and just drives it to the opposite field like 400 feet.
And it, you know, there he is.
Yep, he's back.
This is just the Corbyn Carroll of 2025.
These are the kinds of things he does.
And having 15 home runs at this stage of the season is just absolutely bonkers.
It's crazy.
It's crazy to look up and see the company that Corbyn Carroll is keeping.
And how much taller and how much more of those guys weigh than him.
But I don't know if I said it, Kevin.
But that is our Sanderson Ford Deep Drive of the game, by the way.
That very big home run by Corbyn Carroll in the 10th inning.
of course unexpected.
Great to see the Diamondbacks take that lead,
but unfortunately the bullpen or again,
I'm going to stop saying that.
Ding me.
Whenever I blame the bullpen tonight,
make sure to ding me.
We're not blaming the bullpen.
We're pinning this one on Shelby Miller.
Even though Jesse's right,
maybe it's not Shelby Miller's fault.
Maybe it's over usage of Shelby Miller.
But regardless, we're going to talk more about the pitching
on the other side of this break.
Don't you go anywhere.

Well, Jesse, Ryan Nelson again, it's going to get lost in all of this, I think, with the
extra innings thing and with Shelby
Miller blowing the game in the 10th inning.
But Ryan Nelson shine tonight despite
being out pitched there by Yamamoto
and not even out pitched by a lot.
Shelby Miller, or excuse me, Nelly was
incredible. His fastball
was working tonight. He had control of
the zone. I think we have his pitch chart
here, Jesse. And of course, as you
can see, he
he was working in the zone.
He's working out of the zone.
Nellie was definitely used
his fastball. I think somebody already
stole my joke, but
69% fastball usage,
which is nice.
And again, a very nice night for Nelly
on the mound against the very good Dodgers team
when he was called upon to make this,
you know,
start and replacement of Eduardo Rodriguez.
I don't,
you know,
I don't want to kill the mood here with,
with the Ryan Nelson praise.
But I think Ryan Nelson gave up a lot of hard contact in this game.
Did have some good defense behind it tonight.
there was some good defense behind him but i mean like still give the guys credit like pitching a dodger
stadium over 50 000 people in the stands like even if some line drives get hit right at guys
uh you know there's the freddie freeman line drive double play and in the first inning stuff
like that uh it's still i still think you know you got to give a guy credit for for a performance
like this um but yeah you know there were the some of the underlying stuff i wasn't so impressed with
the dodgers had a three ninety nine
expected batting average against Ryan Nelson.
He only generated four whiffs, three of those coming on the fastball.
The Dodgers did not chase a single Ryan Nelson pitch out of the zone that was not a fastball.
His slider, cutter, change up curveball.
He never got a swing on any of those that was out of the zone.
And that's something that, you know, in the larger picture, like that's important for him to try to get hitters off balance with some of those other pitches.
But yeah, I mean, five innings, one run on a limited pitch count.
Like you'll take that result every day.
I'm going to come on top of you, Jesse.
And I'm going to come back and say, I don't really care.
I mean, you're right.
But and there was some good plays, right?
We have, Jordan Lawler made a great diving play to Rob Andy Pahis at first.
And even Josh Naylor was impressed by that one.
Lordis Gurriel made a really great catch there in the fourth inning, which we, we're seeing
some much better defense from Lord is. So like I'll give them their,
they're due for sure. They, they,
they had Ryan's back tonight. But five innings pitch only allowing three hits,
only allowing one run and only walking one is is still a great night for a guy that
really hasn't been stretched out, was a limited to, you know,
probably what he maxed out at. He probably even went higher than they were going to,
you know, what he went to. They probably wanted him to be more around 65. He, you know,
maybe 75 was like the redlining it, but, and he stayed under that.
However, it just, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's the fact that this is what Nelly has done as a
starting pitcher for the Diamondbacks.
And, and it's not always a 10 strikeout night.
It's not always his fastball dominating like we do see at times.
But this was to me kind of, you know, him, him going out there and working without running away from
guys.
Like even, we even see Corbin Burns pitch more carefully to some of the big.
hitters in this league and maybe walk a few more guys because of that. And Nelson didn't really
fear, you know, going after Otani and some of those Dodgers hitters. And in the end, he had
pretty good results. And that's what that that gave this team a chance to win. Unfortunately,
on the other side of the ball, Yamamoto was just a little bit better, kind of carved up the
diamond backs tonight. And at one point, it felt like he was in line to actually get a no hitter
based on where his pitch count was out and where what he was doing to this team.
So again, it was a big pitch, good pitching matchup there.
We do have to light up the circle K strikeouts on, even though we probably, that doesn't,
it's not where, yeah, there is, it's there.
There's two.
We're not, again, with probably too much energy to run that for just two strikeouts,
but we're still going to light it up, Jesse.
But yeah, you're definitely right.
The Diamondbacks did have some great defense tonight behind Nelson.
and in some cases, yeah, Ketel just seemed to always be in the right place at the right time behind him.
It felt like there were a lot of balls hit his way.
But again, overall good effort here against the Dodgers.
And I felt like the Diamondbacks, despite losing this game, just did a great job of, you know, again, not not letting this game get away from them.
And, you know, when the offense wasn't working, pitching did everything they could to keep it close.
I love El Gallo's comment in the chat said, I love Jesse, but this isn't a math competition.
And I would like to argue that it is a math competition.
But ultimately, you know, expected batting average.
Like, who cares what the score was, right, Derek, expected batting average.
That's the way that matters in my book.
Yeah, point taken, point taken, 100%.
The results are what matters.
And while I would say that-
No, but you're right.
I mean, this is the kind of thing where like all of a sudden Nelson's next start, he's bad and gives up, you know, hard hit balls again that don't go right at right at defenders.
Then all of a sudden there's people that are like, wait, how what happened?
He was good his last time.
And you would sit there and go, aha, this is what I was talking about.
These are the peripherals that I was discussing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's very true.
It's not like he was inducing.
I mean, he did get a lot of ground balls, but it like, yeah, there was a lot of hard hit.
it balls when you take a look at the baseball savant page and see what the Dodgers were doing
against him. Yeah, I just think, I just think it's important to note there's a lot of randomness
in baseball, right? There is. Sometimes you're going to get a lot of soft contact, but they're
going to fall in time and time again, right? And so, but sometimes you're going to allow a lot of
hard contact. It's going to go right at guys. So, um, so the, those other numbers. The hardest hit
ball tonight was by Ketel Marte and it was a single. That was the hardest hit ball tonight, technically.
110 miles an hour off the bat.
And in Cattell's defense, it did go 375 feet.
Andy Paix did a pretty nice job playing that one off.
Absolutely.
But yeah, I think with Ryan, like the last thing I'll say is just that he certainly was better
than Eduardo Rodriguez has been for a long time, right?
Yes.
You know, regardless of what the expected numbers say, like there's an element to Ryan Nelson
where, as you said earlier, he's just going right at guys.
he's not trying to nibble in the way that Eduardo Rodriguez sort of has to.
And yeah, you know, sometimes it's going to result in some hard contact.
But with Nelson, he really is just kind of going right out there and, you know,
throwing his fastball all over the place and not shying away from guys like Latani and
Freeman and bets.
And, you know, it worked out really well for him tonight.
Yeah.
I really applaud Nellie's fearlessness, right?
Against, again, one of the most fearsome lineups in baseball.
He didn't really give a damn.
He went out and threw his fastball nearly 70% of the time.
And I mean, the results, they were good.
They were good.
And I agree with what Ina Jackson says,
because I've often said that this is what I fear, feel is wrong with some other pitchers,
is that they, you know, they don't really attack batters.
more specifically when they're headed in the count,
they waste too many pitches, right?
Like we see guys really pitching outside of the zone,
trying to get batters to swing at some really awful stuff
and not challenging guys once they have, you know,
once they're up in the head in the pitch count.
Like I'm sure Jesse could pull numbers.
I'm sure there's statistical data that proves that you have better results
when you do that, when you, you know,
kind of let your use your pitch count.
But it just feels like at times the, like I want to see,
that aggression and if it fails then so be it but it does feel like especially with guys like
Zach Gallen that lack of attacking the zone leads to them being behind in the count leads to
them not getting that first pitch strike not getting ahead and then we see things fall apart yet
when we see someone like Gallin able to get ahead in the count he has a he has a masterful
performance it goes out there and strikes out 13 guys yeah yeah absolutely there there's
there's an element to Ryan Nelson's game
where he's just a lot easier to watch
than a lot of other D-VACs pitchers, right?
Even when he's not necessarily on his game,
he's still generally filling up the zone with strikes.
And he works pretty efficiently.
Like he only needed 71 pitches tonight
to get through five innings.
And especially working with such a limited pitch count,
getting through five innings was really an accomplishment
against this Dodgers lineup.
So a lot of credit to Nellie for sure.
I've seen some comments about it, Jesse, but Jordan Lawler continues to struggle.
I did my best, Jesse.
I feel like I did my best.
I tried to be nice without projecting negativity, without trying to tell people that it wasn't going to work out.
I still don't want to put that out there.
I still don't feel like that's what I was trying to say.
What I was trying to do was what you do on this show, what you did on this show, what you do on Snake's territory,
which is I was trying to have a level-headed approach to Jordan Lawler getting called up to the Arizona Diamondbacks main roster.
So many people were excited.
So many people were shouting for it, that demanding it, wanting guys DFA'd for Lawler to get called up.
And my only point was you can't look at what any offensive player is doing for the Reno Aces and bank on that being like a sample of their success.
I mean, it's good when they're doing well.
Like, again, I'm, it's a very, it's a great place for guys like Jake McCarthy to go and get right and then come back up and be able to, you know, kind of adjust back to major league hitting and get back on track.
That's what Reno is great for.
It's not great for you looking at a rookie's numbers and suggesting in some way that they're going to be able to replicate that at a major league level.
I wish that was the case.
It seems like works out with the pitching a little bit better than the hitting, considering that there's that, that, that, that, that.
difference in the PCL, but Lawler still doesn't have a hit this season, Jesse, and things
aren't good for him so far. It doesn't really feel like, I don't know. I don't think that
there's a sense of real urgency there. I don't think that the Diamondbacks like absolutely demand
for him to get there and obviously be contributing offensively to this team. I think they just
want him to get adjusted to major league, you know, playing at a major league level. His defense has been
great. So I have nothing bad to say. And I do think that they're kind of asking a lot of him for
him to be switching positions around the diamond and still be able to be good defensively. So I
applaud him on on that side of the ball. But offensively, again, this counts his period of time
when he was up, called up before in 2023. He's four for 42 in his career with 18 strikeouts
as a major league player. And I just have to start wondering, do the diamondbacks continue to give him
opportunities to adjust to big league hitting or do they get impatient and maybe turn to somebody
else like Ildemarovar Vargas who has tons of years of major league experience and might be
able to help this team in ways that Lawler right now is not. I thought one of the biggest moments
in this game came in the eighth inning first and third nobody out. Jordan Lawler was due up and I was
very curious if the Diamondbacks were going if Torre Lavello was going to let Lawler hit a
against a left-handed pitcher in Alex Vessia,
or if he was going to go to the bench,
and he did go to the bench,
and he went and got Gino-Swarres.
And I think that moment right there,
that decision was indicative of how the diamondbacks really feel
about Jordan Lawler.
Like, that was in a bat against a left-handed pitcher.
I mean, you can't really draw up a better,
obviously Alex Vessie is good,
but a righty-lefty match-up,
like, that's kind of what you brought Loller up here to do.
and the Diamondback still went to the bench and got Gino Suarez, who wound up popping up.
And side note, Gino Suarez entered that at bat three for 33 in his career as a pinch hitter.
He has not succeeded in that role.
You could see his timing did not look right at all and not at bat.
And he wound up popping up.
But yeah, Jordan Lawler, you know, two things can be true, right?
Like, can we actually evaluate Jordan Lawler this season on, what is it, 11 plate appearances?
that he has right now.
Like, no, absolutely not, regardless of how many times he struck out.
It's absurd to evaluate any player on that smallest sample.
But on the other hand, do the diamondbacks have a lot of leeway right now to sort of experiment
and kind of see what they have in Jordan Lawler when he kind of has to replace a well-established
player in order to just get in the lineup in the first place?
I don't know how much leeway the diamondbacks really have to do that.
So it's a tough situation and really a tough position that Lawler is in right now.
Well, I do have to give credit to the rest of the bullpen.
I don't think we need to harp on Shelby Miller much more.
I'm sure you might want to.
And I'll let you if that's the case.
But I will probably say some of those curse words, Jesse, that I've been banned from saying.
But Juan Morillo, he did a great job in coming into this game.
I mean, in fact, because of the Dodgers lineup, you could say that all of these relievers at one point,
point were facing, you know, some pretty good hitters. And they all came out of it unscathed.
Nobody allowed more than one hit. I think almost every reliever outside of Kevin Ginkle allowed
one hit, but Kevin Ginkle walked two guys and he got himself into a little bit of a jam.
However, everybody was able to get out of it. And considering that, you know, this was not,
I don't know, this, like, when you look at the guys that went today, it's not guys that you
might have felt super confident in, especially Juan Murillo going out there against the Dodgers.
And he just seems to love to pitch against them. He was previously in their organization.
And this was his first time of actually being able to pitch at Dodger Stadium. So he kind of
shined in that spotlight. Graveman is another guy that I still don't know what to think of him.
I still feel like he could end up being a reliable piece of this bullpen. He seems like it.
but again he's still kind of new and beaks is the lefty that the diamondbacks need he's a guy
that I'm sure that we see there in these you know high leverage situations regardless uh whenever
he's available and kevin ginkled the same way right if he's available he's out there but again you know
this this bullpen went out and and they did their job up until the 10th inning and and i think
the good part about that is that the diamond back's offense wasn't doing much and this
this team kind of came together to to keep this game as close as they possibly could to give them an opportunity to win and they found it they did find it they just unfortunately then gave it right back in the bottom of the 10th
you got to give credit to those guys right yeah yeah some some of them kind of bent and but didn't break right Kevin ginkle didn't exactly have the cleanest ninth inning that we've seen one good pitch Jesse he threw one good pitch it was the last pitch he threw
Yeah, I thought I think I thought it was very funny that Bob Brenley actually said that on the broadcast
He was like that's the first good slider we've seen from Kevin ginkle but hey it all worked out
Yeah, Jalen Beeks gave up a one out double and his inning mario gave up a hit as well so did kendall
Graveman but overall I thought those guys looked reasonably reasonably sharp certainly mario and
graven looked look pretty good in their inning so uh those are those are good signs for the deba
for sure. This result aside, the diamondbacks really need some other guys in their bullpen to step up.
And I think you're seeing Kevin Ginkle look a little bit more comfortable out there, a little more like himself.
And then, you know, maybe we see some of those other guys start to emerge as a more viable high leverage options as well.
All right. Well, we are going to take a look at the numbers from this game and they hurt, especially that expected batting average like Jesse brought up earlier.
we're going to do that on the other side of this break don't you guys go anywhere you're watching the

All right, and a big shout out to Desert Financial, of course, for presenting our by the numbers.
Let's take a look at those numbers from tonight's game.
The Dodgers outscored the Diamondbacks four to three.
Both teams had seven hits.
The runners in scoring position, Diamondbacks were two for nine.
I made this joke on Twitter, Jesse, but at one point, the Diamondbacks were one for seven.
despite the fact that it felt like they had basically been out hit or no hit by Yamamoto.
It was a weird thing to both be no hit and also be one for seven with runners in scoring position.
Dodgers were two for eight.
Both teams had three extra base hits.
A lot of similarity here between these two teams.
But yes, the expected batting average right there just shows once again what Jesse was talking about earlier,
how hard some of those balls were hit by Dodgers batters off Ryan Nelson.
They have a 315 batting average to the Diamondbacks.
What was that 143?
So, yeah, that tracks with the way that the Diamondbacks offense performed tonight.
Yamamoto, when he had the no-hitter going, I mean, it was about as legit of a no-hitter as I've ever seen.
Like, the Diamondbacks didn't hit one single, like, they had no compelling contact the entire time of until Catelle-Marté, you know, drove that ball 375 feet, wound up being a long single that ended the no-hitter.
But yeah, and the Diamondbacks, as you mentioned with the runners in scoring position numbers,
they did have their opportunities.
This game did not have to be decided in the 10th inning.
They had some chances in the 7th and 8th.
They absolutely do.
Very, very quickly advanced to second base after that long single on a wild pitch.
He was there with nobody out.
The Diamondbacks weren't able to score him in the 7th.
And then in the 8th inning, as I was talking about earlier, they had first and third nobody out.
oh, Gino coming up as as a pinch hitter, and then the lineup turned around to Corbyn, Carolyn
and Cotell Marte, D-backs came away empty there as well. So they did have some opportunities that
they let slide in this one. Yamamoto got 10 whiffs tonight. And again, like when you look at his
line, you're right, because usually with a no-hitter, you can't go out there and strike out
double digits usually unless you're Randy Johnson and you're an insane person.
You can't go out there and do like both a night of striking a bunch of guys out and also
make it a complete game for a no hitter. Right. And at one point I looked at Kevin. I think it was in
the fourth inning. I was like he we need they need to get him to throw more pitches. This is,
this is crazy because it was already tracking in the fourth inning for him to like have like,
I think he wasn't even at 50 pitches yet. And I was like, this is not good. He can go.
entirely too long.
In fact, he had his longest outing of the year tonight.
And it was because this Dodgers bullpen is not very good as we saw.
They still did a good job of limiting the Diamondbacks, you know,
but Diamondbacks came out there, not against Vessia,
not against, you know, these other guys.
They did it against Tanner Scott.
And they, you know, got those two home runs and were able to give themselves a lead.
So it just goes to show that the Dodgers pitching situation,
when it's when it's not Yamamoto,
is not ideal at times for them and they need to get as much as they can out of him.
Hopefully that goes in a bad direction for them.
Let's take a look at the N-Hell West Standings, Jesse, because, again, it's nice to be part of the pack,
but it would have been much nicer for this to still be all teams with 20 wins or, you know,
in the 20s and not the Dodgers there getting up to 30 wins this season.
The Dodgers lead the division at 30 and 19.
the Giants who won tonight are at 29 and 20.
The Padres lost their fourth game in a row.
They are at 27 and 19.
And the Diamondbacks sit at 26 and 23 in fourth place.
Again, not ideal, but not a terrible place to be considering how close the Diamondbacks remain to the pack,
which is really right now.
Like we don't want to look at these standings as often as we do on this show.
However, you know, the main key here is to just kind of not.
be the Rockies, not to drift away below 500 and get to a point where you need a hope and a
prayer in order to catch up. You might want to set the bar a little higher than not. Yeah, no, I know.
I probably shouldn't have said that. The Rockies have lost all hope altogether. We're going to talk about
them getting sued in the last segment of this program, Jesse, but for now we'll focus on the teams
above us that aren't getting sued. I don't know their financial litigation status right now at this point,
but I wish they all would get sued for being as good as they are because it makes me sick.
And, uh, yeah, uh, B says 50 billion dollar salary for 30 and 19.
Ha, ha, ha, laughing emojis.
Yeah, no, I mean, I will say that it does feel good that the Diamondbacks have been
matching up so well with the Dodgers this year.
You know, we typically talk about them being such a, obviously such a better team,
the talent wise than the Diamondbacks yet.
It just feels like, again, you got, you always have somebody like Gabby
Moreno that takes the Dodgers series personally and comes out and balls out for for the
diamondbacks.
The debacks are three and three against the Dodgers so far this season, which is already a
pretty respectable record.
And on top of that, two of those three losses to the Dodgers were both games that they lost
due to blown saves, right?
I don't know if I need to remind people the last time.
No, you don't need to.
We don't want to talk about that.
All right. I won't even mention what happened in the series at Chase Field that one game.
But yeah, the D-Backs continue to play the Dodgers really tough.
They mentioned it on the broadcast a couple times that the D-backs were seven and two in their last nine games played at Dodger Stadium going back to the division series in 2023.
So they seem surprisingly comfortable playing in that ballpark.
Unfortunately, it didn't end well for them tonight.
It did not.
well the diamondbacks do have a chance to win the series still tomorrow in what really is the rubber game for at least a little while before these teams match up against each other again whoever takes tomorrow's game kind of has as that four three series lead for the time being but going in the finale we do have corbin burns going up against dust and may and you got to feel pretty good about this with the way that corbin burns has been pitching lately however it's like what offense is going to show
up the one that didn't score a run until the ninth inning tonight on a single solo home run or the one that scored a whole bunch of runs against the Dodgers or is it going to be the one that scored one run against the Rockies and won a game. I don't know, Jesse. I don't know what the identity of this team is anymore at any time, at any point. I just know Brandon Fott goes out there and shoves and it's consistent. And I know Corbyn Burns is not the bad investment that everybody wants to really make him out to be because he's been pretty damn good this year.
Burns has been really good lately.
I mean, he's about as hot of a pitcher as you'll find in the National League right now.
I will add to the storylines for tomorrow that granted,
we're always sort of concerned about the Diamondbacks bullpen,
but tomorrow will be particularly interesting because Shelby Miller has to be unavailable
after going in three straight games.
Ginkle is four out of five.
So he's going to be unavailable too.
So, you know, can you get out of Dodger's,
stadium with a win with Jalen Beaks and Ryan Thompson and Kendall Graveman.
Murillo has pitched in back to back.
So they'd probably want to stay away from him as well.
That's a pretty tough situation going into the finale of the series.
Scott McGuff, you're getting three innings tomorrow.
Lock it in.
Maybe Christian Montez-Dioka actually gets to pitch.
Maybe it will happen.
You know, Tori was so excited about him.
He really was.
He was excited about his story.
He was excited about how long he's been a member of the Diamondbacks organization
and how big of a deal it really was for him to get called up.
But that Major League debut still hasn't happened.
Maybe tomorrow is the day.
Hopefully he shines in that debut.
We will talk on the other side of this break, though, about that lawsuit I was talking about
because even though it's not a very funny thing that happened, there's parts of the lawsuit
that are actually pretty funny.

Well, Jesse, we are doing our little pool party takeover again.
We're doing what?
We are doing a pool party takeover again.
Shane has claimed it in honor of his birthday,
but what do you got was that Glocking spiel that was an air horn oh get an air horn in there for
Jesse Kevin delights me with these sounds so I know it but of course this is on July 3rd on
Shane's birthday uh it's supposedly Shane's birthday bash I don't know how he's not on this beat
well he is kind of but he's a Mariners fan uh but we are going to celebrate him and we're
going to celebrate the Diamondbacks 530 to 10 p.m. It is time for PHNX pool party. Jesse and I had a blast
last year doing it probably our most fun takeover event that we've done considering that we actually got to like talk to everybody and mingle around instead of like trying to find a seat with our press passes that didn't give us a ticket but we've got the right field pool reserved on july third and we're inviting you to come hang out with the p h and x crew and other diehards tickets are very limited so do not wait get down on it right now includes your ticket to the debacks versus nationals in the pool area complimentary food complimentary towel beverage
during the entirety of the game and of course a whole lot of fun to be had so make sure you join
us for that i do believe we have some super chats kevin what do we got we do have super chats but the chat
has maybe a more important question than any possible super chat with all due respect oh my
he says wait jesse do you think cereals for babies i did uh i did come across the
take aside jesse pick aside very spirited discourse that has happened on this show
already.
I,
I, I,
I do consume cereal from time
to time.
Yeah.
I would like,
I would like to think that I'm not,
that I'm not a small child.
So,
so I'm team Derek on this one.
Let's go.
For the record,
I want to say,
every single day,
aside from the day you come here to hand us a loss.
I want to say Dalton Feeley posting his,
his game day meal of,
of dry cereal with a mountain dew and some dino.
Nuggies. I love Dino Nuggies, but I think he kind of proves my point with that one. And that's my comment on what Dauldon had to say to that. Dino, Dino Nuggies. I think it's also an indictment of Dino Nuggies, which are very clearly only for very small children. I don't think anyone's debating that. I could maybe, I could maybe get to a point where I believe that certain types of cereal are for like very small children. If you're eating fruit loop,
like, you know, as a middle-aged person, I like, that's a little odd to me, like the super, super sugary ones.
But, but no, we definitely cannot make a broad brush statement that cereal is is for babies.
That's my guy.
That's my guy.
Let's read some super chats.
You loser, Kevin.
M says, I just prefer we lose a normal way.
These losses like this are mentally draining on me, let alone the team.
Yeah.
No, you're right.
It's defeating.
We talk about sometimes the fact that they come back can build you up and make you believe as a team that you, you know, can't lose or that you, that there's no quit, right?
Like we've seen ourselves come back.
We've seen our, we've won games like this before.
We've been down before.
However, yeah, after a while, it does have to make you feel also equally queasy when you have a lead and you've seen it dissipate right before your eyes.
So that's not great.
And I agree with him.
I also would have liked to lose this game just won nothing.
I want to reiterate that one more time because.
they gave me hope they made me believe me and kevin were screaming uh louder than i was just
screaming about my victory on the cereal thing thanks to jesse but uh it was uh all for not zach gonzalez
has a super chat thank you for your super chat zach he says i've never been a fan of the extra
innings rules yeah the ghost runner uh me like i guess the diamondbacks did it here
more honorably with the home run right but you still had the dodgers doing it with uh
the Dodgers stuff, which is getting on base, getting hits, doing stuff,
trying to pitch around them, having it go south on you.
And that's what happened.
I don't even know if that's entirely to blame for this one.
M says, can J-Mart just come back now?
Like, please, we are running out of real estate.
We need to go on a run and we can't with this bullpen.
Yeah, we need J-Mar back as soon as as possible.
Thank you for your super chats, M.
Thank you B's for your super chat.
says Nellie is the honey badger of pitching.
He does not give an F.
That's accurate.
He does not.
That man is incredible.
Flea ball.
Thank you for your Super Jays.
says, can't blame Tori tonight.
He played his cards right.
He did.
He set himself up.
I guess the one criticism of Tori for the Tory haters out there that need that
criticism to hold on to is that like Jesse said,
Shelby Miller was a bit overused.
And there was one outing that Ryan Thompson kind of let get away on him.
That the Diamondbacks had a good lead.
if they don't. I mean, even if he could have gone to somebody else. That's not Tori's fault,
right? No, no, I'm saying. I'm saying he goes to, no, it's totally Ryan Thompson's fault. I'm not saying
it's not. Well, it's the umpire's fault for calling that one strike a ball. But it's also, I'm just
saying that there is maybe the possibility to go to someone else. However, if you go to someone else and
then they blow it, everybody screams at Tori and says, why do you put Shelby Miller in there? So it's a no
win situation. Really, I was just suggesting maybe Shelby Miller doesn't have.
have to pitch this many days in a row.
And then maybe that doesn't go the way that it went tonight.
M, thank you again for another super chat.
He says, Loller really nothing be a bust four for 41 so far in his career and he looks lost.
Yeah, well, I don't, I'm not ready to declare him a bust.
Like Jesse said, there's only been a handful of it bad.
So we'll calm on that.
And honestly, once again, his defense has been major league defense.
So I'm not going to again turn on him yet.
Zach Gonzalez says hope Erod calls out sick the rest of the season.
He might. He might. Jesse, before we get out of here, I did bring up that Colorado Rockies lawsuit.
And again, this isn't the events of the lawsuit aren't funny. A fan has filed a lawsuit against the Rockies for an incident that happened in 2020.
He got hit with a foul ball while in one of the luxury suites. And apparently it did catastrophic damage to his eye.
This was back in 2023. And that part sucks. You and I both know how awful.
it can be having a foul ball come up into the end of the press box
and how scary it can be once it starts ping ponging around and everything like that, right?
He blamed this on a few things, including just the design of the stadium
where you couldn't really see a ball coming into the luxury box
and also that the netting wasn't proper.
And all of those are valid complaints.
But the funny part of this lawsuit, Jesse, is that in writing, they said,
the defendants and the defendant in this case is the Colorado Rockies.
Longstanding poor performance on the field has contributed to a game day environment
in which spectators, particularly those in luxury suites,
are less engaged with the action on the field.
Thus meaning that the Rockies are so bad that people don't pay attention to the baseball games happening.
And it is a danger to those people because a baseball can just fly and hit them.
And we know that that's actually something that very much can happen.
I don't want to rush on this,
so I just want to let you guys know.
If you're watching on go ph andx.com or your favorite app,
we're going to extra innings is what we're calling this one.
They call it overtime, but this is baseball, damn it,
and we go to extra innings.
So we're going to do that.
Go join us over on go p.h andx.com now.
And we thank you guys, no matter how you're watching or where you're watching.
But, yeah, Jesse, again, like,
I didn't want to make light of the situation.
And it's hard not to because that,
the part of the lawsuit to me is so funny, right?
And it's not funny that something bad happened to a fan or anybody ever.
We know this is a danger going to baseball games.
It can't be avoided, unfortunately.
Unless you literally wrap the entire field in netting,
you can't avoid the dangers of what like foul balls and things can do at a point.
In fact,
there's been other incidences where people have fallen out of the stands going after
like a foul ball or a fly ball or a home run.
there's there's there's just danger to be had at a baseball game that you really don't find at another sporting event right you do have to kind of be vigilant you do have to pay attention to the game because at any point there can be a pop fly or a ball hit at you in the stands and you need to be aware that that's happening but uh yeah the fact that this lawsuit goes on to allege that the rockies just have been so bad as a baseball team that
nobody actually goes to these games to watch the games.
They just go to socialize and that they're guilty of harboring a culture of this is kind of funny.
It's kind of funny because it tracks with what we've heard about from people from from DNVR.
It tracks with what we've heard from fans of the Rockies that this is why people go to games.
They don't go there to actually watch the Rockies.
They just go there because it's a great place to chill and hang.
DMVR bar.
Yeah, there you go.
You sent me this article earlier, Derek,
and I just love that the article headline
is Mansu's Rockies for poor play
after being hit by foul ball.
And I don't know if that's really a fully accurate synops.
It's a little misleading of the headline,
but it made you click on it.
It made me click on it.
And I clicked on that link faster
than I've clicked on just about any.
link ever. But yeah, in fairness, like, I view people who are in luxury suites as being like
generally not so engaged in what's happening on the field. And I'm not sure how much the Rockies being
terrible, like legitimately impacts that. Like, if you're in the luxury suite and you've got like
bottomless nachos, you're probably not, you know, like you're hanging out with the people
enjoying the food and the drinks and all that,
you're probably not dialed in on the action all that much.
So I'm very curious, though, what the outcome of this case is going to be.
Jesse, I was in a luxury box and they had Shake Shack burgers.
And I know I'm not supposed to give out any free ads on this show.
But I will say I was not engaged in the game when I was engaged in this tower of ShakeShack Burger.
How could I care about anything else in the world besides that sitting in front of me and being available for me to eat at will?
What I will say is that, again, I don't want people coming for me to make light of this because the part about the guy getting hit and the catastrophic damage to his right eye,
it's not like there's any any pictures or anything like that, but that part's horrifying because it really is.
It's like the idea of getting hit in the face by a foul ball is probably one of my biggest fears.
You know, I love to talk to Jack in the press box.
And sometimes me and Jack just go off on a tangent, staring deeply into each other's eyes,
talking about stuff that has nothing to do with baseball.
We're not paying attention to the game.
And we flinching stuff.
At least I've got Jack, Jack closes his laptop now like I do.
And he doesn't even if a ball isn't coming anywhere close.
to us and I'm glad that we both adopted this thing.
But it's because we've seen people get hit in the press box.
We've seen computers get smashed.
I saw Paul Goldschmidt have to buy a guy, a computer.
I think it was Bobby Mac, if I'm not mistaken.
But there.
Well, he didn't have to buy the computer.
He just,
he just did it out of the goodness of his heart.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, for sure.
Different like that.
It's just, it's just, yeah, it's just a danger.
It's just a hazard of the job.
And it can happen at any point.
But more importantly, you as a fan.
And honestly, like you said, in luxury suites, usually that's people that were invited to a game and are part of something based on a company event or, you know, like, yeah, I know that there's people that like are big fans of the team that have sweets as well.
But in a lot of cases, you're mingling, socializing with people in that luxury box and not necessarily paying attention to the game.
I know that that's what we do when we have our pH and X takeovers in our events, right?
but it's this part of the lawsuit that once again just kind of like boggles my mind.
The cultural shift is not incidental, but rather encouraged by the Rocky's own marketing department and design choices,
which emphasizes hospitality and off-field amenities over fan vigilance.
And again, couldn't you probably say that about every single sports team,
especially in the year 2025, that they are more focused on amenities?
and off-field stuff than they are about making sure you're paying attention to the games.
In fact, they all want to encourage people that aren't actual fans of the team because they know
fans of the team are going to come to the games.
They want you regular, normal people that don't actually give a crap about the outcome of the game
to come and have a great time and want to come back and bring your friends and also not pay attention
to the game then and chill and buy, you know, stuff.
but it's wild because Colorado has a state law that protects stadiums from lawsuits like this,
but the lawsuit is alleging that the Rockies and Coors Field somehow that this is extenuating circumstances,
that this goes beyond just the normal things of baseball.
And I don't know if this lawsuit has a lot of,
has a lot of legs to stand on here.
but I also understand that people sometimes are very upset over something traumatic like that happening to them
when they were supposed to come to a baseball game and have a fun time and eat some hot dogs.
And next thing you know, their life has been forever changed.
So I understand wanting retribution and wanting to get some revenge.
But I don't know if this one's going to hold up in court.
I have a hard time believing that the lawyer who wrote all this up
did all of it with a straight face.
You had you had to you had to kind of get some enjoyment out of writing writing the line that you said earlier.
Defendant's longstanding poor performance has contributed to a game environment in which spectators are less engaged with the action on the field.
That's just that's just good lawyer.
This lawyer had a chance to dunk on this team and let out some grievances, air some grievances.
he's been holding back and he he did it in in written form it's wonderful it's wonderful

nothing instead of losing four to three and extra innings.
