PHNX Arizona Diamondbacks Podcast - POSTGAME: Jordan Lawlar SPARKS D-backs Win in ELECTRIC Return vs. Reds
Episode Date: June 13, 2026The Arizona Diamondbacks desperately needed a spark, and Jordan Lawlar delivered one in his return to the lineup on Friday night in Cincinnati. Lawlar went 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases and seve...ral clutch hits, helping power the D-backs to a 5-2 victory over the Reds. We break down Lawlar's immediate impact, Eduardo Rodriguez's shortest start of the season, and how Arizona's young players stepped up when the team needed them most. Plus, the bullpen was outstanding, covering 6.1 scoreless innings to lock down the win. We also discuss a concerning update on AJ Puk's rehab assignment and why it feels like the injury bug simply refuses to leave the Diamondbacks alone. 0:00 LIGHT THAT CACTUS 🌵💡 11:20 Nolan Arenado's game-saving defense 17:00 Jordan Lawlar GOES OFF in return 28:30 E-Rod can't go 3 innings 34:30 Ladies and gentlmen... Does this thing still work?
I think it, I think it still works.
Cactus?
Do we, do we turn this thing on?
It's time to turn on the cactus light?
The, what?
The cactus light, David.
Remember, we used to turn it on after wins.
I have no idea what you're talking about, Darren.
Well, you better know.
Jordan Lawler has returned and saved us,
and we're turning on the goddamn cactus lights
because the Diamondbacks won.
Let's go, baby!
To another edition of the P.HNX Diamondbacks post-game show.
My God.
I really won a baseball game.
It's been a long time since we've covered a win around.
Can you tell we're a little bit emotional?
We don't even know how to ask.
The Diamondbacks win tonight in Cincinnati,
beating the Reds by a score of five to two,
and the dark times might be over.
We might be back.
I'm not ready to declare that.
Jordan Lawler, though, is back.
In fact, he returned today to the lineup,
and he was a huge reason why we are talking about a Diamondbacks victory right here tonight.
My name is Derek Montia.
occasionally known as your mayor of P HNX.
We got our guy, Damon Dog, your dog, Damon's dogs.
We got these Jordan Lawler's dog, most importantly, he's the DeBacks dog.
Once again, it is Damon Farrell on the ones and twos.
And yes, you're absolutely right.
PHNX Sports.
Hit that like button and show us those cactus lights.
I thought you were going to say Sean.
He's absolutely right by saying, Derek, where's that red crop top and jar full of honey?
Oh, yes.
He wanted me to be Winnie the Poohin' in around here on this show.
show something Damon was very much dreading.
He needed to win more than most of you because he was going to get the full show.
You guys were just still going to get the top half of this.
But of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365.
Bet365, where winning is everything.
And man, feels good to be winning again.

The D-backs do in fact win, breaking this horrible stretch that we've experienced.
And, you know, again, things aren't exactly over yet, but it just felt good to watch this team's offense finally wake up tonight and beat the Reds by a score of five to two.
A team who is struggling equally as much as the Diamondbacks right now.
So again, if you don't want to get too excited about this win, it's understandable.
That's not what we do here on this show.
That's not how we act.
Me and Damon were acting like the Spurs did after they beat the Oklahoma City Thunder after we went up five to two.
We were running around the studio.
I kicked my stupid flip-flops off.
I was throwing things.
We were hugging each other, crying a little bit.
It was great.
It felt good because the Diamondbacks finally scored a run after 21 scoreless innings.
After 21 scoreless innings.
After 21 scoreless innings, the D-backs finally scored a run in the third inning of this game,
and we finally came back to life.
We finally felt what it felt like to be alive once again.
The Diamondbacks finally get back in the win column.
They improved to 35 and 34.
And God damn it, Damon, you're not stopping me from doing it tonight.
Send little tiny Geraldo Perdomo up the mountain.
He had a big role in this game.
Big win tonight for the Diamondback, something that they just absolutely needed
and did not look like it was going to be a win, considering that Eduardo Rodriguez had his
shortest outing of the season, going only two and two-thirds innings after walking five
and giving up two hits, two runs, one of them earned, and just really struggling with his
control in this one, throwing a lot of pitches, including a ton in the
the first inning. But like I said, the offense, let's talk about the offense, finally getting going
for the first time in 21 innings. The debacks scored a run there in the third inning of this game
and just let that sink in for a moment. When we talk about the offensive struggles, the way that
this team has just failed to produce runs, manufacture runs, hit home runs, score runs, hit with
runners in scoring position. I mean, it's been a stretch. It's been a stretch. It's been a
bad stretch for this team scoreless for 21 straight innings. But it should have probably been more
than just the one run they scored there in the third inning, considering the Diamondbacks loaded
the bases with no outs, got a run, and then loaded the bases again with one out and then did not
get another run. That's something that's been frustrating to watch over this scoreless stretch and over
this stretch while this offense has struggled. It has not been about hits. It has not been about
having runners in scoring position. It's not about opportunities. It's just merely not delivering
in those big moments.
And tonight in the ninth inning,
the Diamondbacks finally did that.
They finally delivered in the biggest moment of this game.
And that's the reason why we are talking about a win here.
They're early March.
I think that was what was so frustrating about the Marlin series in particular, Derek,
is that it was every single time the Diamondbacks had a runner in scoring position,
essentially.
They're hitting under 100.
So it almost felt like they just had no shot.
Meanwhile, Otto Lopez is modern-day Honest Wagner,
hitting 500 with runners in scoring position.
And yeah, and so it was really just like a, you know,
it was two teams propped up against each other
who were just doing opposite things, right?
And it was the true difference maker in the series
was how did you do when you got those runners
and scoring position opportunities?
Absolutely.
And what did you do with them?
Tonight they took advantage in the late part of this game.
The law of averages finally got back to the Diamondback side.
I mean, they had to do because I,
reverse jinxed them by immediately jumping online when they had a runner in scoring position,
finally and being like, oh, for seven with runners in scoring position as quickly as I could.
And it worked because of the six. Yeah, I mean, it wasn't good for early portions of the game.
It was the same exact thing. Well, that was the thing. Yeah. So like I said, they're in,
in that third inning when they scored that run, right? Marte double to lead off the inning, right?
And then Corbyn Carroll gets hit by a pitch. You have two on, no outs.
Gabriel Moreno reaches on a fieler's choice and loads the bases with no outs.
and all they're able to do is bring one home on a Nolan Aronado sackfly.
That's not enough.
That's not good enough because then Vargas walks to load the bases again.
And again, with one out, you have Perdomo striking out,
Lawler grounding out at the time, only one run scores in the inning.
That felt like a huge missed opportunity for this team.
And it really felt like that should have been where they started to put the game away more.
And we do credit a lot of people for the win.
We're going to credit Jordan Lawler.
But our guy, the journey was.
present at this game, Damon. So maybe he is the key to turning things around. And he says I was at
this game. It was amazing. Love it for you, brother. Thank you so much for representing our snakes
there in Cincinnati. Again, Diamondbacks got another chance in the sixth inning with one out.
Jordan Lawler would get hit by a pitch this time. A lot of guys getting hit by pitches,
a lot of guys getting hit by pitches on the anniversary of a very, very bad game during a rain delay where the
backs were playing this exact same Reds team with these exact two starting pitchers on the
mound and a rain delay and a nightmare happened and it completely felt like it sank our season
at that point, right?
The numberbacks were in fact 34 and 34 when they started that series with the Reds and played
that horrific rain delay game.
Yeah, no, I mean that.
And also it just feels like all season long guys have been throwing inside on the debacks.
Corbyn gets hit a lot.
Nolan Aronado gets thrown inside at.
constantly and has been hit a lot this season.
I don't know, man.
What's it going to take for the Diamondbacks to retaliate?
I know that they never, that's not their style.
They're never going to retaliate.
Sometimes, dude, you have to stand up for, for something.
You have too many guys getting pitched inside.
Yeah.
Back, back them off a little bit.
I'm just saying there comes a point where Jeff Bannister can't be the only guy
sticking up for this team, right?
You know, and you're leaving him on the leash.
at least take the leash off of Bannister and let him go crazy.
There was the one time Tori almost fought Real Muto, right?
And that was that was, you know, we saw some retaliation there, I guess.
But I don't know, man.
It just feels like we allow teams to just pitch us very, very hard inside constantly.
Grover, Corby, Carol, and Lawler would all get hit by pitches in this game, right?
And if any of them went the way that it went with Moreno last year,
Damon would have no choice but to get on a flight and fly to Cincinnati as fast as much.
No choice.
But speaking of Grover, he delivered in a big moment there.
With Lawler getting hit by a pitch, he steals second.
And that is just huge.
He steals two bases in this game.
But that one puts him into scoring position.
And he scores on a Lou James Gruver RBI single.
And that ties the game up at the time at two.
That is an example of Lawler coming in and doing all of the things that the Diamondbacks
have not done well this season.
You know, he just made such a huge impact on this game.
And all of this was after he made a big defensive error there in the third inning.
I mean, early on, Lawler was struggling to find his footing a little bit.
He made an unnecessary throw, a bad throw to third base that short hopped and Nolan Arnato kind of backhanded it.
And Aronado is as culpable, I felt like, in the mistake being made as.
Yeah, he has to get in front of it.
Yeah, exactly.
He knew he wasn't going to get the runner at third base.
So at that point, his entire job is to knock that ball down
and ensure what happens doesn't happen.
Instead, the ball ricochets in a weird way, goes out of play.
The runners are awarded a base, essentially,
and that runner at third gets to go home.
And Gino Suarez, who got that RBI single,
or single, didn't get an RBI single, gets to take second.
That was huge. It was huge.
This Reds team is really struggling to score,
and the Diamondbacks were out here giving them free.
runs, you know. Luckily, Nolan Aronado made up with it, made up for that with the best defensive
play of the game and possibly one of the best goddamn plays I've ever seen a third baseman make
in my life. I don't know. That might be a little bit hyperbole, but it came in the eighth inning
with runners on first and second. He totally saved two runs from scoring. Yeah, I think the moment
matters for sure. I almost tweeted Derek during that when that happened, like add that to the
Nolan Aronado career defensive highlight reel. Like, don't put it on the, on the beginning. You
beginning portion because there's better plays that he's made, but put it maybe at like minute,
you know, to, two, 236.
Like, let's throw it in there in the right in the middle, smack dab middle of the, of the
compilation.
And I think, uh, you know, that, that play was like vintage Nolan Aronado.
I, I did check his baseball savant to see if like he was what his, his defense was at this
season.
It's not quite, you know, like the Hall of Fame level that he were accustomed to seeing out
of him. But I think the eye test shows us that he's making pretty much all the plays that are
that are routine. And then he gives us some of that as well that is just a guy that's willing to
try some things because he's been there, done that before, knows how to angle that throw perfectly,
knows if he can make that player, if he has the time to get the runner there. I think a lot of people,
you know, I know it was a three two count, but a lot of people might have tried to go and
dive and get the bag at third base. And no and R. and not.
I was like, I'm not getting there.
My old, my old slow ass.
I'm going to rip it across the diamond and see if my first baseman can make a good stretch.
Yeah, it was a phenomenal play.
Like every high IQ vet play.
Yeah.
And I mean, Vargas with the stretch deserves his flowers for that play.
But I mean, as much as the stop was amazing.
And that's really what saved two runs from scoring.
Right.
If that gets behind him and gets into the outfield, that's ball game, probably.
Yeah.
Instead, he makes an incredible stop.
But the throw, the throw, would.
was just unbelievable.
And it's amazing what he has still left in that arm.
And Justin's right.
I don't know how that keeps happening.
No, it's because it's a different scene.
Yeah, to Damon's credit.
I have it ready on Derek's camera.
It's just when I switch to my own.
Because you know what?
I'm more worried about getting my boy Derek looking right than I am about what my own.
That's fair.
My own.
That's true.
That's my excuse.
That's my cope.
I mean.
But anyway, we also have Jordan Lawler again.
And he did make that mistake.
A please goes a long way, though.
Oh, please.
May I add?
Please.
And Justin, please.
Thank you.
But Lawler, again, he made up for that bad defensive throw he made with an incredible
catch in the fourth inning at the wall, just plowing into the wall and catching that.
Again, there's just things that Lawler did in this game that truly felt like his impact changed the game.
Like, you have a different center field out there.
You have Waldschmidt out there potentially.
Maybe he doesn't make that play.
You know, we already saw some mistakes with him and Tommy Troy.
We know Tommy Troy's kind of gone all out out there.
Maybe, you know, again, you just don't know how that goes.
But you said it so well.
When you watch Lawler play the outfield,
despite that not being his position,
he just looks so comfortable and natural out there.
Tracking down fly balls.
His speed is tremendous.
He's got a better arm than most of our outfielder's have.
And again, he just brings something dead.
different to this lineup. He was a huge spark. Just one day ago, I sat here on this show saying that
Jordan Lawler's return was not the savior of the Arizona Diamondbacks. And boy, was I wrong,
because he basically was that tonight. And again, the Diamondbacks had a huge missed opportunity
in the eighth inning. Another frustrating moment when it comes to Lawler. The young guys all put together
some very patient at bats with two outs there. Lawler singles, Grover walks, Walschman walks,
the bases. And then you just have Catele-Marty coming up there and just putting together an
awful at bat, swinging at a pitch way out of the zone. He gets caught looking on a ball that was
originally called a ball, but then was reviewed and overturned and called a strike. And then he strikes
out looking on three straight pitches. Like, that was just too big of a moment for Catell to just
sit there with the bat on his shoulder and not protecting the zone with two strikes. Like,
it felt crazy there. And again, there felt like too many moments tonight where Marte came up short in a
big moment. He did have a double and scored a run. So I'm not going to say he wasn't productive.
Again, the offense goes how Marte goes. And even with Marte just hitting a double and just
scoring one run, that still felt like it was enough to get, you know, to get this offense going.
Like we said, we don't need Marte to have a three for four night and hit two home runs in order
for this team to win. You just need something out of him and not an O for five night.
Yeah, you need him to come through when you're, you're given an opportunity like that, right,
against a pitcher who's struggling.
So you know he's going to want to get ahead in the count.
So it felt like Kattel kind of had the bat on the shoulder on that first strike,
which is understandable.
I know like you mentioned, like he's walking everybody.
So taking a pitch isn't the craziest thing in the world.
But then following that up with swinging at a pitch that's way out of the zone is then kind of where you lose the AB.
And so I would like to either see him be aggressive there and, you know,
take advantage of a hitable pitch on that first.
pitch when you know you're probably getting one or you know like if you're going to be disciplined
be disciplined right but once it was oh two it was over i did want to touch on the what you said about
like how i was talking about luller because i did say he's so comfortable out there but it or he looks
very comfortable out there but it wasn't even the the play that he made at the wall which is of course
the best play of the night that he made but it was that other play that ended the inning where there
was two outs and it was kind of a high leverage spot and he's on the track he's he's you know backing up
to the track on the run but despite being a new outfielder seems to know exactly how much
spaces between him and the wall and feel like very like comfortable he doesn't even need to put
a handout or anything he was perfectly comfortable with where he was catching that baseball and
I think that's a great sign to see of like he he knows this he has spatial awareness out there
That's something that Nolan Aronado has that you don't really think about all that often, I think, when you're when you're like talking about a baseball player because you can't measure that.
You can't, you can't measure someone's spatial awareness and like such intangible things.
And every ballpark is different.
Totally.
There's no way for you to really know the.
Yeah, but for him to come out off of the IL essentially cold.
I mean, I know you've got a rehab assignment, but essentially cold and to be in a major league ballpark, a hitter's ballpark like that.
tracking down the baseball looking at Comster Bowl to me that, you know, like maybe I'll put my
hand up and say the Diamondbacks probably knew he could handle the outfield move when they're
talking about putting him in center field. And maybe the podcaster who isn't watching him practice
ever isn't privy to that kind of stuff as much. So I'll all apologize for that one. He looks really
good out there. And I'm happy to see it. It's crazy how far we've come since that rumor from
Lidom during the Dominican Winter League where we heard that George Lawler was
playing in center field down there. We were like,
what is this? Dude, I was, I mean, there was
like a time not that long ago where
I was like, Alex
hitting the ball in spring training, man.
And Lawler just
isn't producing. Yeah.
Like, we, I think center field is,
I mean, what are we going to do? Take Alec out
of that spot. And now Alec Thomas
sadly is, uh, is an afterthought in
Jordan Lawler is genuinely like, I mean, he
not only did he play great defense tonight,
but he looks like a
competent bat as well. And it's so nice to have a guy with a pulse in the in the back end of
the lineup. And, you know, I say that in Jess. But like, you know, it's, it's, it's, it feels like
recently we've really had a lack of production from the back end guys as the team has kind of
sputtered a little bit here from Walt Schmidt, Troy, you know, Grover hasn't been fantastic
since he's been called up. Phaven obviously is giving you nothing. So in Pardomo hasn't played great,
even though he's getting on base a little bit more right now.
But Lawler looks like he's like a legitimate future top of the lineup bat for this franchise.
And yet you have them in the back half right now.
I think it bodes well for the depth of this team.
And we talked about it, right?
Like you just needed a couple guys to step up.
And if he can just stay healthy, man, he just needs to stay healthy.
And I think that he really truly is that guy that is going to be like a true difference maker.
Tonight was one of those weird nights where the Diamondbacks didn't need like everybody to have this big night.
The hits were peppered around.
I think the most impressive thing was they had five stolen bases tonight.
That's something that we have not seen from this team in a very long time.
And it was huge in that, you know, ninth inning.
You had with one out, Gabriel Moreno walking and then stealing second base on a play where I was terrified that he got hurt on it.
And then you had Nolan Aronado strike.
I think he flew out.
So with two outs, the Diamondbacks did all that damage.
And that's what's impressive.
With two outs, Gabrielle Moreno got in a scoring position.
They were forced to walk ill tomorrow Vargas.
That put two runners on.
Perdomo reached on the baseball gods opening up the heavens and being like, here is one for you,
Diamondbacks.
You've been going through a lot.
Not only that, but like Jerry's been going through a lot.
I know.
Think about the Mariners series.
Remember when he in the ninth inning had that line drive that was looking.
looking like it was going to escape over the second basement.
And I think it was Brendan Donovan who like hit the tip of his glove volleyball set into the air.
And then he caught it.
And then the Mariners end up winning the game in extras.
That's where you're like, I just can't believe it.
I can't believe how bad our luck is right here.
Seriously.
That's that right there is the is the other side of that coin.
And we, we deserve this.
Well, the reds have been struck pretty pretty bad by stuff like this.
They're in a us mode right now.
They are.
They were, I believe, 0 for 7 with runners and scoring.
position tonight, a very diamond backs performance. They're out debaxing the debacks. They are. And again,
that, that, it felt like the game was kind of in the reds hands and was still going in that direction,
even though it was tied. And then this one mistake really just turned everything, right? You got
Perdomo reaching on a fielding error by Blake Dunn, who should have caught the ball, did not catch the
ball. Moreno scores to give the diamondbacks a three to two lead. Bargis makes it in the third. Jerry
moves in the second. And then Jordan Lawler basically puts the baller.
the game away with a two RBI single to a fly ball to right field.
Predomo and Vargas both scored Diamondbacks go up five to two.
Just a huge hit and a huge moment for this team.
Groover tonight one for three with a huge RBI and a walk.
You had Moreno.
He was one for four with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base.
But our King Snake tonight is the guy that returned to this lineup and truly like powered
the Diamondbacks offense to a victory.
tonight and that was Jordan Lawler.
Two for four tonight, two RBIs,
two stolen bases, one run
scored. Just what a night
for this young man. Or a hero.
I mean,
and he just does it all with a smile.
Baby goat.
It's amazing that
even in this case, it's yet
another young player
returning to the lineup
to spark this team
to victory. You know, we had
Jose Fernandez do it. We had Ryan
Walshman do it. And now
King King Snake Jordan Lawler coming back doing it for this team just a yeah the stolen bases were sick too
yeah right like that it was that was really good to see uh another guy who can be a threat on the
base pass i think that's why jordan lawler is so intriguing is that he's he gives you a bit of
everything you know he he has pop in his bat he can play outfield he can play infield even though
we're probably going to keep him in the outfield now yeah he he can he can run he can throw yeah
Like this guy is legitimately five tools.
It's why he was a top 10 draft pick, obviously.
And, you know, thankfully he's finally playing well because it did take a little bit of time.
He probably got called up a bit too early.
And, you know, people like me, idiotic like me, wrote him off.
But he isn't above that 1,000 OPS and, you know, albeit limited sample size this season.
And I think it's just really intriguing signs that he comes back and immediately looks
just like what he was looking like before he got hurt, Derek.
Yeah.
Because he hit a home run the night he got hurt.
A lot of people forget that.
First home run of the season, right?
Yeah.
Might have been his first ever.
Interesting.
Wasn't it?
Yeah.
Wait, what?
He was his first career home run, wasn't it?
And then he got hit by a pitch?
I believe it was.
Yeah, I believe it was.
I mean, you can't make that up.
That's the most diamond backs that you can get.
Brother, you are not wrong.
More on that later.
I think, you know, Zach in the chat, he's asking,
there's no way he's not in the lineup every day, right?
Yeah, he's.
Sharpie.
This is it, especially with how much time he's missed, right?
He's, he's fresh.
He's probably still going to get a day off occasionally.
But for the most part, this should be the outfield.
This should be it.
It should be Walshmidt, Loller, and Corbyn.
And I very much like that.
I think Walsh Schmidt has a chance of being replaced when Lourdes returns because he has been
struggling offensively lately.
He's down to hitting 259 with a 668 OPM.
that's not great.
But again, Lordus D.H.
Well, I'll tell you, Lourdes also wasn't necessarily tearing the cover off the ball himself.
Though he did really start to get going offensively right when he got hurt again.
And that sucks to see.
So overall, though, just a good performance tonight.
Good to see the offense wake up.
And again, they needed it on a night where Eduardo Rodriguez had his shortest outing of the year.
We're going to talk about that on the other side of this break.
Don't you go anywhere.
You're watching the P.H.
Next Diamondback show.
Well, you've got to do your research if you are ever involved in an accident or serious injury because the lawyer you hire does matter.
You want to make sure your representation has your best interest at mine, not how much money the firm makes.
And that is Mark and Alexis Breyer, the husband and wife law team.
Their team brings hundreds of years of combined trial experience along with multiple certified specialists in personal injury and wrongful death.
And as we've spoken about time and time again, that's important because in Arizona there are few specialists in this field.
The state barter has certified less than 1% of all lawyers as specialists in injury and wrongful death litigation.
Plus, they actually go to trial for their clients.
They are trial lawyers.
If a case needs to go to trial, they are ready and they know what needs to be done to prevail in front of a judge and a jury for their client.
So make sure you give them a call.
They cannot guarantee the outcome of your case, but they can make promises to you as their client.
You can cancel your free agreement with them at any time for any reason.
You will receive as much in your pocket as they receive for their attorney.
any fees, even if they have to reduce their fees to do so.
And you may speak with one of their lawyers as often as you choose about anything you wish
to discuss, including Jordan Lawler's return.
If you've ever, if you've had a serious injury, call the husband and wife law team first at
702, 602, 783, 8841, or visit their website at the link in our show notes and tell them
PH and I extend you.
And don't tell them I messed up their phone number.
That number again, 602, 783, 8841.

365 makes betting on games like this even more fun, especially that live in-game betting.

winner lose. It's that easy. And of course, while we love watching an entire game and having it come down to the wire like tonight's did, we also love when our team just goes ahead by five runs. And that would be nice to see out of this debacks offense because you are a winner over at that three six five. That would be nice one time. Kevin, Kevin came over and said, I'd like to just come over one time while you're watching a baseball game and see that the devacs are up. It felt like a while since he's been able to do that. But of course, when your team, no matter who you bet on goes up by five runs, you are a winner with the early.

Well, look, Damon, looky, looky,y, looky what we have here.
Another shaky start to a game from a D-Backs pitcher.
Joy.
And this time it was our.
ace Eduardo Rodriguez who couldn't
really get his footing in this
game. I mean, when I talk about
Erod struggling tonight,
he just
could not control his pitches.
He seemed to have, forget
command. He had no control.
He couldn't get these things in the strike
zone early on. He walked the
first two batters of the game and then
went through a 10 pitch at bat
with Sal Stewart before registering
his first out. Then it was
another lengthy at bat with Spencer Steer
I think like eight pitches for a walk to load the bases with one out.
Felt like the Diamondbacks were going to be down five nothing before.
They got a chance to come up and bat in the second inning.
And of course, somehow, some way he gets out of it.
Suarez, Gino and Dunn both fly out kind of harmlessly to end the inning without any run scoring.
But the damage was done.
40 pitch first inning, Damon.
40 pitch first inning.
It really is a miracle, Derek, that that was all the damage that got done.
I mean, overall, Erod gave up two runs, one earned in this one.
And the only reason why that one scored was because of the mistake made by Jordan Lawler and Aeronado with that runner at third base.
But in the second, he did give up a home run to lead off batter, No L. V. Marte, no relation for his first home run of the year.
That made it one to nothing Reds at the time.
And, man, he would, he'd walk one more in the inning.
but he would get out of with any further damage.
It was just taking him so many pitches.
He just could not find the zone.
And I mean, even when getting outs, he was still,
he just still had lengthy at bats.
I'm surprised this game was as short as it was, quite frankly,
because Erod felt like he was, you know,
again, throwing 10 pitches to every batter, right?
His pitch count just continued to balloon
and he would not make it out of the third inning in this one.
And Vowson in the chat, Vowson 602 said,
did he pitch bad?
It's weird because Erod's been able to limit the damage all year long
when he pitches bad.
And so, yeah, he pitched bad today.
He was not able to throw his pitches at all where he wanted to.
Yet he was still able to hold this Reds team to just a few hits.
It was mostly the walks that really did the damage.
He had five walks today.
That's five walks in two and two-thirds innings is,
forgivable almost right so i don't know i mean we have his pitch chart here you can take a look
he just had control issues all night and was all over the place jesus i mean look at look at how many
of these pitches are out of the zone uh sometimes i don't exactly know what to look for on these because
i don't know what the game is going into the the the game you know what i mean sure sure like oh was he
trying to throw his all of his slurves over there michael saroka for example but
on a night like this where you're looking at this pitch chart i mean that that that's
That's just awful.
I think what you're right, because it's like, is where they trying to hit the edges,
the overall game plan all season long has been to pitch in the zone, you know?
And it's like, it's fine if you're breaking stuff.
If you see his change up, which his change up was pretty decent tonight, but he still
used the fastball as his primary pitch.
He threw that 34% of the outing, maxed out at 94.2 miles per hour.
he got three whiffs on the fastball.
He only got one whiff on the change-up.
No whiffs on the cutter,
curb ball or sinker.
But again, it's like if his fastball
establishes the zone
and establishes that batters have to respect it,
then it makes that breaking stuff
that does fall outside of the zone more productive, right?
Because you're seeing fastball,
you got to be honest on it
because he's throwing it on the corners,
he's throwing it on the edges.
And then when those pitches come in,
that look like a fastball,
like a change up and die out there and fall out of the zone, then you're swinging and missing.
You're getting those whiffs.
You're getting those strikeouts.
And again, he only got four whiffs tonight and somehow still got three strikeouts.
So guess what?
We're firing up that circle K strikeout meter for his three strikeouts.
And again, the circle K strikeout meter deserves better.
And it's not the problem.
Thank you.
I think we've got to spruce it up a little bit, like three strikeouts.
Three strikeouts.
I mean, doesn't that just make you want to party?
Yeah, yeah.
Erod going two and two thirds innings makes me want to party, David, 100%.
Like what's crazy is the innings pitched really is the biggest problem with his outing.
Two and two thirds innings pitched.
He gave up two hits, two runs.
One of them was earned.
Five walks.
Three strikeouts, one home run allowed.
Right?
He was up to 85 pitches.
He probably could have finished the third, but Tori had seen enough and pulled him out of the game.
for Ryan Thompson.
And this is where we truly have to give our flowers to the bullpen
for what they were able to do today for this team.
Talk about a bullpen start.
That's exactly what this essentially was.
So it might have been,
might as well have been Brandon Fott going out there
and starting this game for the Diamondbacks.
I'm not even joking.
Because Fott's been pitching as a starter for Reno
and I think he's been giving them three innings, right?
So that's like what this was, right?
Thompson comes in magnificent.
T-time.
one in a third innings pitch, one walk, one strikeout.
He's been pretty damn good this year, man.
Man, seriously, seriously.
And again, he's a guy that receives a lot of flack for off-field stuff
and for all sorts of other stuff.
But Thompson, at the end of the day, has a 2.28 ERA this year in the Diamondbacks
bullpen.
And has been a big reason why this bullpen has been as good as it is.
And all the guys that pitch tonight have been.
Every single guy that pitched for the debacks tonight in the bullpen
have been a huge part of the reason why this bullpen has been so unexpectedly good for this team to not.
Johnny Loisigga goes out there.
Johnny Lausagna gives him a third of an innings pitch, one strikeout.
Taylor Clark really dug in and gave the Diamondbacks a great performance tonight.
Two innings pitched.
He did give up one hit.
He did give up two walks.
But still, two innings pitch to eat up those innings and have it be a pitcher as reliable as Taylor Clark was excellent tonight.
It was excellent.
two innings from Taylor.
Taylor Clark is another Derek Knows ball moment, I want to say.
Like, I want to give you your flowers there because...
2.1 2 ERA this year.
Yeah, you were very high on Soroka and very high on Taylor Clark this offseason
and both have been godsend to what we have done this year.
Absolutely.
Like, no chance we're above 500 if those two players aren't on the team.
No, you're not wrong.
You're not wrong.
If Brandon Fought is our fifth starter instead of Soroka.
Oh, my God.
I mean, you just can't.
You can't imagine that.
And again, Clark's one of those guys that he had a great year last year with the Royals.
I felt it was great to bring him home, but it was also great to see him go out and establish himself as just a quality reliever in Major League Baseball.
Coming here, though, now and giving his best, like this has been his best season up to this point.
So he's just been his best this year.
And again, the Diamondbacks really needed that.
Like you said, when you're talking about the offense, where we're like, just give us a guy or two, right?
Just give us, we don't need everybody, you know, perform.
We don't need all these like three for four nights or four for five nights.
We just need, you know, some complimentary baseball.
Play complimentary baseball.
That's what the bullpen did tonight.
They just handed it off to the next guy and did their job.
And really all season long, to be fair to those guys.
Like they, it's been, it's been the miracle of the offseason.
Mike Hazen's miracle.
Yeah.
Now, not everything else has worked out, but.
It truly has.
This bullpen is, is probably Mike Hazen's best bullpen work he's ever done.
Well, and then you also have Ginkle and C. Wald. Ginkle gets the save tonight. He goes one inning, giving up just one hit and one walk. His ERA this season lowers to 2.70. And then Paul Seawald comes in, slams the door. And again, just felt like, I mean, I don't know. It's weird. Did you guys feel good about Seawald coming in? Because I kind of did. Like, I was like, I wasn't nervous. I wasn't ready to make jokes about the Seawald.
experience. I was like, oh, Daddy Seawald in a save situation, sign me up.
Let me jump around for a second. I want to jump around a little bit. One inning pitch. He gets his
16th save of the season. He is now 16 for 17, 16 out of 17 save opportunities. So again,
just an impressive performance from the bullpen tonight. And when we talk about this bullpen being good,
I know it's hard to wrap your mind around that. And I know being baseball fans,
we get really down on our team very quickly.
But the bullpen since May 1st has literally been one of the best bullpents in all of baseball.
Damon, wrap your mind around these numbers.
The Diamondbacks bullpen ranks MLB and hits allowed first.
Homers allowed first.
Earned runs per game tied for first.
Earned runs tied for second.
And extra base hits allowed tied for second.
It's unreal.
Were people right, Derek, when they were talking about, hey, maybe take out Joe Ross and, you know, James McCann's ERA from this bullpen?
Because the rest of the team is actually pretty good.
Yeah.
And I mean, every once in a while, like it feels like every time we start talking about the starting pitching ERA or the bullpen ERA being good, we blink and they blow it in one single game, it feels like.
Specifically the starters.
Specifically the starters.
And my God, can we just talk for a moment how bad the starters have been?
just another atrocious performance.
And again, this one wasn't Erod necessarily
letting the game get out of control, right?
This was Erod just not being reliable
to give this Diamondbacks team enough innings
that you feel comfortable, you know,
winning a baseball game.
You did not feel like the Diamondbacks earned this one
with how short Erod's outing was.
But man, the bullpen earned it.
The bullpen was who stepped up here today
and truly held this game, said, you guys, look, two runs, we're going to keep it here.
Offense, wake up, we're tired of this 21 scoreless innings, crap, give us some run support,
and we will win this baseball game.
And boy, they did that just now.
And I think it felt good for all of us to see.
Derek, I have pulled our sweet, sweet Paul Seward's baseball savant page.
Oh, oh, really?
I'm actually surprised that his fastball Velo is actually that high.
I'm not lying.
Yeah, me too, actually.
That's hot.
That's a lot of red, Damon.
It's a lot of red.
It's obviously not the best, but.
Oh, come on, though.
It's pretty damn good.
Well, this is Paul Seawald, though.
The K rate, the walk rate.
I mean, those are great numbers to look at.
Yeah.
I mean, he still does it.
He still gets hit hard when he gets hit, right?
But I mean, the XBA is 100th percent.
It's the best in the sport.
I mean, yeah.
I don't know what else.
to say about that. That is crazy.
It's the best of the entire
damn sport, Derek. You broke in piece of Yoshi
with that one. It broke his brain. Like, 164.
Oh, my God. That's crazy.
That is legitimately insane.
I bring up,
I bring up little mentions
because I feel like Paul gets, you know,
slandered a lot. And
I mean, there's, there's sometimes
when he's deserved it, right?
Like, during the World Series and a lot last year.
But I will say that at the same time,
Seawald has, you know, this year has been incredibly reliable and somehow has continued to do it with a very limited arsenal that isn't flashy.
He just does it with location and he does it with using his kind of gamesmanship on getting batters to get out, right?
So it's just great to see.
Plus, every strikeout is still a strikeout for the kids and he got one tonight.
So one strikeout for the kids from Paul Seawald.
and one big, big performance from this Debex bullpen
that has been one of the best, if not the best,
in baseball since May 1st, which is crazy to say.
That sounded weird just coming out of my mouth.
Let's go ahead and take a quick break.
On the other side of this break,
we're going to talk about the numbers from this game,
and then we are going to talk about another unfortunate injury update.
Can we ever have good injury updates?
Do they all have to be unfortunate injury updates?
Feels like that lately.
But let's go ahead and take a break.
We'll be right back.
Don't you go anywhere?
You're watching the PHA next time in Beck?

the window store. Well, Damon, like I said, we did to the Reds tonight what other teams have
been doing to us. And I'm fine with that because we need to eventually, we have to bully some
teams and the stretch of teams of the diamondbacks have coming up deserve to be bullied. And if the
Diamondbacks don't bully these teams and they don't win a bunch of games. Oh yeah. We got to bring back
bullying. Especially of teams like the Angels, the Twins and this Reds team right now. That isn't a bad
team, but they're just struggling right now. We've talked about this. We've caught these teams when they
when they've gotten hot too. And that's unfortunate. It's the the nationals right now have the best
offense in baseball. And we know that because we got rolled by them in our series with them. Same thing.
with this Marlins team that has been shockingly good at home this year,
one of the best teams in all the baseball at home, right?
So this Reds team right now, they've had their issue scoring offensively,
and the numbers tonight display that.
Let's take a look at buy the numbers from tonight's win.
The Diamondbacks win this one by a score of five to do.
Not a lot of extra base hits in this one.
Two for the Reds and one for the Diamondback.
Runners in scoring position, the Diamondbacks were two for 12,
which is still gross.
I'm not going to applaud that.
I'm not going to get excited about that, but it's still two for 12 and not O for whatever,
like the Reds are over on this side, O for seven tonight.
And the Diamondbacks, again, they went 21 innings scoreless, so I will take two for 12.
Meanwhile, hard hit percentage, not, we were not hitting the ball very hard tonight.
But this is why we were getting those lucky drops and just the baseball gods opening up the heavens
and favoring us tonight.
The Diamondbacks had a 29.4 hard hit percentage.
The Reds had a 50% hard hit percentage.
Expected batting average was 216 for the Diamondbacks and 250 for the Reds.
They did kick our ass when it came to challenges tonight.
It felt like every time they challenged something, they were right.
In big spots.
In big spots.
Yeah, I think that's why it feels like they kicked our ass so bad.
Marte striking out.
They were huge.
Yeah.
But again, the Diamondbacks did not at least leave with.
challenges in their pocket and they were two for two themselves tonight.
So good effort over here overall, but not.
I don't feel like this is one of those nights where we're like, yes, they got in a groove.
Yes, they're back.
Right.
We did have to, we did say it had to be over before we could say we're back.
Facts.
And I don't know if we're ready to say we're back yet.
Maybe.
I don't know.
I think I'm ready to say we're back.
You are so reactionary.
Yeah.
It's crazy.
Well, Derek, the, the, the, the, the,
When we were saying that it was over, can I just say that that was without Jordan Lawler in the lineup?
Sure.
Now that he's back, we're back.
Do you understand how the math works here?
I do.
I do understand how the math works.
Because I can explain it to you further.
No, I got it loud and clear.
I got it loud and clear that time.
But again, I will say that I still need this offense to do more.
I need more.
I need more production from this offense.
I need them to take better advantage of their scoring opportunities.
And I need them to not go have bases loaded twice in one inning and only score one run.
Bases loaded with no outs and then bases loaded with one out.
That's that's bad.
Sometimes you just need to see one go through the net, Derek, Jordan Lawler, got that one to fall.
The rest of the team, it was a, it was a dam that was about to break.
And now you're going to see this free flowing offense just start going crazy.
You know what I'd like to see.
We're bad.
I would like to see Thunderbolt in here tonight.
I would like to see some of the people that came in here.
I mean, Killer Rex has been M.I.
Yeah, is he okay?
I'm a little bit concerned.
I am honestly worried about it.
Even in the losing streak, he's been pretty MIA, which is very unlike him.
Yeah, I mean, he needed, I'm surprised he wasn't here calling to Tories.
He was probably there for like two of those six-ish losses that we encountered.
I'm kind of upset because I had a big announcement specifically for those guys.
And that was that Tori Lobolo is now just one win.
shy of 700 in his career as a manager.
So there you go.
That's going to happen.
The Tori Lavolo fan club is fired the F up.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I think it's 2 BMC and maybe one other person is in here,
but those people are pumped, pumped.
But we're going to take a quick break.
On the other side of this break, Damon,
we get to talk about more bad news.
Do you want to talk about more bad news?
Not really.
I thought we were back.
Well,
Well, we are.
We're back to having a pile of injuries,
and we're back to having more bad injury news.
That's what we're back to.
We're back to that.
So let's take a break so that I can cool off a little bit,
because I was having a good time.
Derek wants to bring us down.
Yeah, he wants to bring us down.
Well, hold on.
Hold on.
It's all good.
Notoriously, I make an effort when we lose to bring us up.
Bring us up in segment four, right?
The other day, I'm actually, in the spirit of all,
baseball, you know, media guys everywhere.
This is, I am hitting it on the head because this is what Jack does.
This is what Jesse does.
This is what Derek does.
All these freaking dorks who are at Chasefield every day, not as, not as alpha males like myself who don't need credentials and just let it fly on the podcast.
We're just observers.
Yeah.
These guys, they want to sit there and tell us, oh, you know what?
Maybe don't be so happy about the way.
Maybe don't be so sad about the loss.
No, guys, we're going to treat it like we just got eliminated every time we lose,
and we're going to treat it like there's confetti raining down from the ceiling when we win.
Are you with me?
Yeah. Katie's with you.
She says, Damon, I'm with you on this roller coaster.
Hell yeah.
There's dozens of us, Eric.
There are dozens of us.
Oh, Carol X is here.
Oh, my God.
You're alive.
We think you're killer X.
And when we said we were worried, I think that that was genuine.
Because we know that you are dedicated to hating on Tori, especially in losses.
but it's good to see you and we hope you're doing all right man.
And Tori Lavello's one win away from 700 in his career.
So hopefully that'll put a smile on your face.
Hopefully that puts a smile on your face.
Let's take a quick break and on the other side of this break.
We're going to talk about that bad news and what it means for the rest of the season
and that hope that Damon is talking about.

And we almost had ourselves a real life Shady Ray's moment in here.
The one and only Johnny Venerable was in studio today for the PHNX Cardinal show, and he walked
through the office asking, has anybody seen my Shady Ray's?
That's a silly question to ask in an office full of people that do Shady Ray ad reads.

All right.
Well, we got Vowson in the chat is asking who's pitching tomorrow.
That is Michael Soroka on the mound with Zach Gallen pitching in the finale.
That's the Reds teams being bad.
But I think we have, yeah, there you go.
Michael Soroka against Louder, which again, another great opportunity for the
Diamondbacks here with one of their best starters going up against a Reds starter with an ERA over five.
And hopefully the Diamondbacks can secure the victory in game two because none of us feel very good about our chances there with Zach on the mound in game three, unfortunately.
We'd love to see Zach turn it around though.
So fingers crossed, that's what we get.
But also speaking of fun and speaking of what we have coming up, we have been having our World Cup watch parties, which have been a blast.
Right now, we got our, we got our crew out there at Phillies at Scottsdale, having a great time.
Still, I don't even know if they're live anymore.
They might be, they might be off air, but they had themselves an amazing time watching Team USA beat Paraguay.
And again, they had all sorts of drink specials.
You can join us.
We have all sorts of upcoming watch parties throughout the World Cup watching the U.S. men's national team and Team Mexico in the World Cup.
That is presented by Buchanan's, Casa Amigos, and Don Julio.
and Michelob Ultra, which I'm still mad.
I didn't get a Mickelope Ultra here in the office tonight.
That's a whole other side story.
But drink specials at Phillies during these events include $4.5Micholub Ultras, $6 neutral and $6.8.
Artois.
So visit go phnx.com slash events for more details and to RSVP.
Bees was there.
He was at the watch party yesterday.
He says can confirm it was a good time.
Now I'm sad.
I missed it even more.
Sad, Damon.
Sad.
But anyway, great, great to see.
You know bees and Connor played football together in high school?
That blows my mind.
Connor Cox of H&X.
Amazing.
Is that insane?
I have so many questions for Connor now, specifically about bees.
I'm going to.
I need to know everything about him.
He is a man of mystery.
But we have some unfortunate news.
Like I said, it's my job to bring you down after this high before we get out of here just so that
we all kind of stay.
But drop a like on this video.
We got to regress to the means, Damon.
That's what we do around here.
If we're too high, we got to bum you out before we get out of here.
And this definitely is bummer news.
There's no other way to put it.
We got this tweet from Nick Picoro, Damon.
And I don't want to look at it.
But if you wouldn't mind throwing that tweet up, everybody should probably see this.
There's been a setback with AJ Puck.
According to Nick Picoro, A.J. Puck has had his rehab paused due to,
due to left shoulder discomfort,
he will undergo an MRI,
another blow for a rehabbing Diamondbacks pitcher
following the Corbin Burns setback earlier this month.
Oh, I want to stab my eyes out reading that.
I really do.
When is enough enough for what this team has had to endure?
Truly.
I just cannot believe that here we are facing yet another setback
for a guy that we thought,
We were on the verge of getting back.
He has been making rehab starts.
He has been pitching in Reno.
Did not love the updates we were getting from his rehab assignments, Damon,
because they were worded very strangely.
You know, normally everything's great.
He was great.
It was all great.
You know, they kept talking about everything's the best.
Yeah, everything's awesome.
No, they were talking about like waiting feedback and stuff.
Like there was, it felt like the way that they were wording.
things was definitely leading us down this road. Now, again, credit where credit is due to this
bullpen staff for doing what they've done this year and for holding it down without them. But,
you know, it's kind of like at times what we talked about when Juan Murillo went from being one of
the most dominant pitchers in this bullpen to having his struggles over a stretch of a few games,
right? We said, like, Morillo's been great and we should just be thankful he's been as good as he has been
instead of now talking about, you know, it falling apart for him.
You know, luckily the Diamondbacks got the performances out of guys that they did up to this point
for them to reach the return of AJ Puck.
Similar to the starting rotation, with how the starting rotation has struggled,
it was going to be once again a godsend to have Corbyn Burns return.
And now we find out that his return is being pushed off to late August at the very,
very earliest, but more likely September.
And again, some are even speculating that he won't return at all this season,
even though Burns has seemed very determined to do so.
When it comes to injuries like this, there's simply nothing you can do to return faster.
And there's nothing you can really do when it comes to aggravating other parts of your body
when you're trying to come back to, you know, from a long layoff like these guys are coming back.
from. That's what sucks. The blame immediately gets placed all over the place. And, you know, again,
with how many of the injuries this Diamondbacks team has experienced, it's understandable for people
to be throwing stones towards the medical staff on this organization and to be making, you know,
wild, crazy accusations at their competence based on what's been going on with this team. If you
look around baseball, though, it's, it's unfortunately common, you know, and,
And it's just something that's happening around all of baseball,
not just specifically to this D-backs team.
Though it does seem to happen a little more to us than other teams,
let's be honest, right?
But again, this AJ Puck news would be far more devastating.
I feel like if we got him back and he was pitching, you know,
amazing and had to go back down rather than, you know,
at least up to this point, we've had to kind of live life without him.
So hopefully this delay isn't a significant.
significant delay. Hopefully, this doesn't mean that AJ Puck now is shut down for months and months,
and we have to now, you know, start speculating if he's going to come back before the end of the
season. More than anything, what I'm really upset about is that Danhausen, who I sat next to
at a mother effing merch table one night working a pro wrestling show, has refused to return
any of my calls or my human money deposits that I've given him to reverse this injury curse
on this Arizona Diamondbacks team because he's too busy with the Knicks.
Oh, New York City and I'm hanging out with Liz Lemon and Tracy Morgan.
I'm sick of it.
I need Danhausen to finally respond to my messages.
And I, again, am willing to dip into funds here at the office in order to make this happen.
I think his cameo price is up to like $400.
now. The longer we wait, Damon, the more expensive it's going to be, and the longer,
the more injuries are going to pile up for this team. So we need to figure something out.
