Starting point is 00:00:00 Ketel Marte keeps himself red hot. 10 game hitting streak for Marte, and he does it with a 452 foot blast. We're talking about all of it right now. We're turning on the cactus lights. Don't you go anywhere. Into another edition of the P.HNX Diamondbacks post-game podcast. Presented by our friends at Circle K,
Starting point is 00:00:37 it is your mayor of the Bay, your mayor of PHNX, occasionally known as Derek Montea. There's probably a real mayor of that city. We probably should be claiming that. Yes, we've pretty much dominated them and made them, what is it, like West Arizona now. Not even a city either. It's an entire metropolitan area.
Starting point is 00:00:56 It is. And we've taken over all of it. From San Jose all the way to Santa Clara. We got all of that, all of that. We own all here now. Welcome in to you all of you. We love you guys. And we thank you for being here.
Starting point is 00:01:06 This is the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast. That voice you hear is my dog, your dog. Everyone's dog. It's Damon dog on the ones and twos. Bark, bark to you, Damon. I know you had a big night, including when Catelle-Marty hit that home run for personal reasons, but also for the best kind of reasons. It was like Brad Pitt and Moneyballed there.
Starting point is 00:01:26 That's right. It was a beautiful moment in here. I've never seen him actually weep before over a home run being hit. It was great to see. But this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365, where you can make money on Catee hitting home runs and getting RBI. Bet 365, where winning is everything, just like any time the Diamondbacks play the Giants. Download the app today and use that code of PHNX 365.
Starting point is 00:01:48 We're also brought to you by our friends over at GameTime. Download the GameTime app right now. Create an account and use code PHNX for $20 off your first purchase terms to apply. I'm getting in on Catell props tomorrow on Bet365. I'm just letting everybody know that right now. There's no minutes into the show. Yeah. Like what was it plus 140 for him to have one RBI?
Starting point is 00:02:09 170. Plus 170 plus 540 for two. Free money. Free money. Cashed both. Text me about those next time. I will. Cash on all of that.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Diamondbacks are cashing in on these games against the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies. We've talked about this 13-game stretch that the Diamondbacks have basically had to win. They had to win a lot of games. And guess what? They've done exactly that. They take the first series of Rockies, two games out of three. They sweep the Giants back at home. Then they take three out of four against the Rockies.
Starting point is 00:02:44 and now here they went two out of three here against San Francisco with one more still to go. You know, as greedy as I thought we were being asking for 10 wins. Here we are, right? Ten wins, if my math serves me correctly. And again, it's an impressive feat. I know these teams are not good teams. The Rockies have the worst record in baseball. The Giants are underperforming by that.
Starting point is 00:03:10 And that's an understatement, right? but the Diamondbacks win tonight by a score of 7 to 5, and again, they stayed hot. Of course, once again, the balancing act, the spinning of the plates comes into effect. The Diamondbacks keep their offense going over here, and they're starting pitching going over here, but they forgot to keep that bullpen plate spinning.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Things got a little tense there late, but thanks to the Diamondbacks offense and Eduardo Rodriguez delivering another quality start, the Diamondbacks are able to win here another game during this 13-game stretch. they improved to 30 and 24. They are a season high, six games above 500. In fact, as we tweeted out, the last time they were six games or more above 500 was on September 29th, 2004, which was the end of the 2024 season when they finished the year 89 and 73 and came one
Starting point is 00:04:04 game short of making the postseason. Anyway, the debacks continue their dominance over the Giants this season. winning their fifth straight game. They've won all five games they've played against San Francisco, and they did it with Arizona once again getting another quality start from a starting pitcher and a big night from the offense for the win. There were a lot, there was a lot of shenanigans in this game, and I want to say that.
Starting point is 00:04:28 That is one thing that probably feels the best part about this win. The best part about this win is that it felt like the Diamondbacks overcame the umpires and New York against them and just a lot of factors. I throw Shohei Otani into the mix as well. I know Lucille had something to do with this. It feels like a lot. It feels like everything was working against us. And specifically, it feels like the powers that be were at the forefront of it.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Because I couldn't believe the, you know, obstruction ball was out of play call. Ground rule double. Let's talk about it. And then Ildomaro Vargas getting called out on strikes. Both were just unthinkable. We got down one in the second inning. Loner and Otto walks to lead off the inning. And then Ryan Walshmidt hit what should have been an RBI triple to tie the game up at one.
Starting point is 00:05:18 Instead, the Giants had the play reviewed a play where the ball that Walsh Smith hit went to their stupid wall with their stupid crevices in their wall, right? The crevice that is the exact circumference of a baseball. Of a baseball? Derek, may I, may I add? Hey, guys. A little suspicious. A little suspicious.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Maybe we add two inches to that wall padding. and we make it where this would be impossible, just a thought. I actually have what I feel like is full ignorance about this situation because my understanding, as explained, just a few games ago when they were talking about the Ivy at Wrigley Field and such, and the instance where Lourdes tried to call for a ball that was touched by the Golden Glover over there, right? This was an instance where it felt like it should have fallen. under the guidelines that if you touch the ball and pull it out, as Harrison Bader easily,
Starting point is 00:06:17 clearly did without a problem and throw it in, that you kind of sacrifice any ability to say that you were obstructed in any way. I was under the understanding that if the ball gets stuck like that, you had to raise your hands up and not do anything to touch it because if you pulled it out easily, as he did, that that means that the ball is playable and you're fine. I don't understand. I don't understand what the hell happened there. I really don't. And I think what's more frustrating is if the umps on the field would have called it that way, that would have been different. The ums on the field did not call it that way. And for some reason, the folks that get to review it and look at it from New York are the ones that said, no, no, no, that was obstruction. We're,
Starting point is 00:06:58 we're calling that a ground rule double. Still salty about 01. I'm, I don't know how long I'm going to be until I'm not salty about this. But yeah, obviously, they'll never forget. I'm just trying to put two and two together, Derek, because I got to find, yeah, you got to find the conspiracy. Because I genuinely can't like watch not only that, but the, the Vargas thing as well. And sit here and say, no, this was, this was, you know, reviewed upon, looked at by people with integrity. And they came to the, this was the right decision. What are you, it didn't impact the play at all.
Starting point is 00:07:32 No. Bader went, grabbed the ball, threw it in. It was that simple. In fact, you could argue the ball getting stuck made it easier for Bader to grab. I would argue. You might have like kicked out and then he might have had to chase it even more. So I'm going to be just easy for him to run over and grab. It really does feel like and like maybe this is grasping at straws.
Starting point is 00:07:50 But it does feel like the Giants might have this padding the exact height so that they can use the obstruction or the, you know, the lodging of the baseball to their advantage of moments like this. Right. Because there's really for me like I can't think of one other reason why you would have it the exact amount of. space that it would need to get lodged in there if the ball was hit hard. At a baseball ballpark. I don't at a, yeah, at a baseball stadium. You know, a place where a baseball is played. And it just doesn't, it truly doesn't make any sense to me.
Starting point is 00:08:22 And it doesn't make any sense to me how that is considered a dead ball. Yeah. Like, even if, even if it does get lodged in there, feels like that's kind of part of the ballpark that you guys have built. I don't know. If it was out of play, it's not unplayable. Yeah, it was out of play, sure. But if it, it was clearly in play.
Starting point is 00:08:39 It was clearly playable. He played it. And I watched him play it with a camera with my eyes. I don't want to get hung up on it, but it is a stupid thing. And considering how close this game came to be a 7 to 5 victory, you know, that might have been far more important if the Diamondbacks weren't able to tack on some late runs there in this game. But luckily they did.
Starting point is 00:08:59 I mean, an ADC note and ball doesn't lie moment goes up there, sent it to the moon. Right. Right. You got Vargas coming in. Yeah. He at least brings Arnato home with a ground out. And then. Gabriel Moreno brings home
Starting point is 00:09:10 Waldy on a sack fly to give the Diamondbacks a two to one lead at the time and then ADC, yes, like you said, had the spirit of Barry Bonds inhibit him and he hits a solo home run almost into McCovey Cove. Bounced on that little walkway in between. We would love to see it actually go into McCovey Cove,
Starting point is 00:09:27 but I'll take what we can get. But what about the Vargas? What about the Vargas situation? The Vargas situation was more shenanigans. You're going to get me to say the F word too early in the show, Damon, because I was about to. with two outs and an 02 count, Vargas was called out on automatic strikes due to a pitch clock violation in which Vargas was attentive to the pitcher.
Starting point is 00:09:48 He was looking at him. With four seconds left? With four seconds left. Three? Was in the box with like three seconds left? I don't know. The broadcast kind of walked it back a little bit and said maybe he didn't look enough at the pitcher. I think this is ridiculous and egregious, especially when you're talking about a strike three call,
Starting point is 00:10:06 a very important moment in this game. And again, it was two outs. There was nobody on base. It wasn't like it was a big scoring moment or scoring opportunity. Regardless, though, I really, really feel like, at least felt like at this point in this game, that everything was trying to be done to help the Giants turn around. I mean, we're just straight up calling guys out when they're clearly looking at the pitcher
Starting point is 00:10:29 with the allotted time that you need. And there's no review for that. You don't look at that one for some reason. it really was like two of two really non-impactful calls at the in the grand scheme of things thank god but two calls that went very you know only only not badly against the diamond backs and only not impactful because of the fact that the diamond backs here ended up scoring enough runs to make this you know a non-issue but they're their run scoring has been inconsistent and tonight could have easily been one of those nights where those moments were huge
Starting point is 00:11:05 and prevented them from scoring. Not only that, but then kind of got in their heads and kind of made them, you know, start to do the chasing thing again at the plate and just starting to be a little too desperate. They didn't have to do that in this one because they were able to hold on to that three, two lead. They did give up Tommy Troy, who has been here.
Starting point is 00:11:23 We haven't had a chance to talk about Tommy Troy, really? No, we got called up. Got called up on Saturday, ruined my weekend just a little bit with joy. I was going to just like completely check out. I can't check out when Tommy Troy is making it. But that's a whole week's worth of content that we got robbed of. Oh, 100%.
Starting point is 00:11:38 We could have done a whole week of Tommy Troy up to the Big's content. And now we're like three games in and everybody's like, yeah, Tommy Choice. Yeah, Tommy Troyes. He's a staple of the organization, actually. Two for two doubles in his debut yesterday on Sunday's game. Or, excuse me, was that Sunday? Yeah, that was Sunday's game yesterday. Saturday, he got his first hit, the double.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Was that Saturday? Yeah, against the Rockies. No. I'm sorry, that was Sunday. Yeah, you're right. I'm getting mixed up because of the long. weekend. The long weekend. We don't get those around here. Yeah. We don't get this much time. That's what I was telling the coffee shop people down low this morning, Derek. I was like, where have you guys been? I was like,
Starting point is 00:12:12 I'll be honest. We never get three day weekends because usually sports means sports are happening on holidays. So it was nice to get that time off yesterday. But I digress. That's a different conversation. Tommy Doe for a ball hit by Willie Adamas to lead off the inning. What was that? The third inning, I believe. And it bounced off his glove for Adomis to get a triple. Kind of a defensive makes mistake there. You know, again, is very close to making a highlight real play, just kind of bounced off the butt of his glove. Should have had it. Should have had it, truly.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Should have had it. And it's the type of thing that gets Barrosa subbed in for him on defense at the end of the game because, you know, I think you think Barrosa makes that play. You think Waldschmidt maybe if he's in left and Barrosa's in center probably makes that play. It's in your glove. Got to catch it. It was almost an insanely good play. And like I think, you know, we'd be talking about, wow, what a web gem from
Starting point is 00:13:04 Tommy Troy, but got to come up with those, you know, not saying that he can't, but got a little bit of like Jake McCarthy flashes for a second, like Vietnam War FlashBes. Like, oh, man, that almost was a really good play that was super athletic, but ended up costing us three bases. It did. And then he scored on a Casey Schmidt, RBI single, and that man has been a menace. Probably one of the only giants that is trying here against Diamondbacks. But Nolan Arnato did make an incredible grab on a ball.
Starting point is 00:13:34 hit by Rafael Devers that initiated the inning-ending double play. They tormented Raphael Devers tonight. It was great to see when I talk about Eduardo Rodriguez's strikeout that was assisted by the ABS system here in a little bit. But Nolan Aronado was removed from the game with right groin tightness. You don't love to see that. But hopefully it's just a temporary thing. And mostly maybe because this game at the time was a little bit more of a blowout than it ended
Starting point is 00:14:02 up being but we will hopefully get some updates here on arnaudo hopefully that's not too serious right uh it would allow jose fernandez to get some playing time so it's not the end of the world because we do have a quality third base baby jose fernandez ready ready to step in it's been a blessing this year to have these young guys be able to come up and play and not just come up and fill a roster spot but come up and play yeah right like like the way tommy troy and ryan waltzman are playing right now so I mean, providing a spark, right? Like I tweeted it over the weekend, Derek, and people loved it because people love the baby backs. They love the baby backs.
Starting point is 00:14:38 They love the baby backs are back. I got that. Eduardo said he said the Reno backs, the Arizona. Yeah, the Reno backs are his favorite team. He said, I have that shirt that says baby backs on it that I wore the other day that from like 2003. And what did it have had like Lyle Over Bay and like Alex Sin Tran and like Brandon Webb on it. But how about this? How about this iteration of the baby backs?
Starting point is 00:14:59 I like this. It's electric. And these guys are helping the team win baseball games. And this is why I think the fan base gets so frustrated when we have these guys in the minor leagues. And we're being told, no, just trust the vets who are not performing because that's what this organization is about is trusting in its guys. And you sit there and you go, but Ryan Waldschmidt looks like he might actually be a dude. And he's just in Reno and he can help this team win right now. And it feels like that crowd is getting vindicated in a way with how.
Starting point is 00:15:30 well these guys are playing and coming up and making an impact and causing a spark. Like in their immediate first times in the lineup, they're just, they're fitting in perfectly. It's awesome. It's, it's, you know, it might be easy to say at times, but when you see what those guys are doing in Reno, there's no reason why you don't feel the need to go to them. I mean, Lou James Gruver, we talked about what he's been doing for the Aces. There's all sorts of other guys that probably won't get a chance this year because of, you
Starting point is 00:16:00 know how this roster is stacked and guys coming back. But we were very skeptical that we were even going to see Ryan Walschman in 26, let alone Jose Fernandez and Tommy Troy at a major league level. You know, props to the Diamondbacks front office for making these moves and turning to these guys to at least give them the opportunity to see if they can help this team win baseball games. So far, they're doing exactly that. You know, it's, it's kind of like Vargas.
Starting point is 00:16:26 Vargas has been struggling, right? after having such an amazing start to his season, he was 0 for 22 before he got that double in tonight's game. But he still, you feel like you see Vargas's name a lot going, you know, ground out RBI, ground out RBI, just the guy that at least is able to do something when he's at the plate. He did it in the sixth inning. Herdomo single to lead off the in-in-in-in-in-in-in-vanced on an Aaronado single
Starting point is 00:16:50 that was kind of a throwing error by Willie Adomas, and then debacks get a run on Ildomarovar, ground out to make it four to two at the time. But the man of the night, the man of the week, the NL player of the week, Cotel Marte, steps up with one out in the seventh inning. The aforementioned Tommy Troy walked to have one base runner on. And Cotell Marte extends his hitting streak to 10 games with a 452 foot two run bomb to increase Arizona's lead at the time to 6 to 2. Hey, Derek, calling me. Damon, question back there?
Starting point is 00:17:25 Not really a question, more of a comment. Yeah, sure. Actually, I guess it is a question. Remember in the off season when people were like, hey, you know, would make this team better? Trading Cattel Marte. Yeah, I do remember that. Remember? I remember that. Now he's boosted his average by 75 points in the last two weeks.
Starting point is 00:17:47 It's wild. I mean, he didn't even have himself like a good night at the plate overall, just going one for five. but that one was very important. And more importantly, over this 10-game hitting streak, now he's hitting 524. 524 with six doubles, four home runs, 17 RBI, and four walks. Is that good?
Starting point is 00:18:08 I mean, he's unreal, man. Is that good? There's no better hitter in baseball right now. I think what Cotell Marte is doing. And wow, I mean, just truly, like, it felt like this team was, did it not, Derek, feel like the entire time, this whole season, like we were one,
Starting point is 00:18:23 Ketel Marta explosion from exactly what we're watching right now happening where it's like we said it time and time again. Corbin's producing. He's not losing his mind, but he's producing, right? He's the only one of the big three that was producing. Obviously, Perdom was not playing great baseball, but I still think he provides you with stuff intangible as leadership. He gets on base a lot. Yeah, he takes a ton of pitches. He works counts. But it, you know, it felt like the pitchers were doing their job. The bullpen was doing its job. You've gotten six. 16 of 21 quality starts since hashtag the meeting, Derek, which I'm sure you were dying to bring up. I'm kind of pissed off that you stole my thunder there with that.
Starting point is 00:19:05 We'll get to it a little bit more in detail. But it just felt like you were one Catea explosion, which was coming from being a team that was a legitimate postseason contender. And now here we are. Cotel Marte is legitimately like he was hitting 208 two weeks ago. He's going to start at second base in the national, in the national, in the national, in the national, he's the hottest hitter on the planet.
Starting point is 00:19:29 It's wild to think about the, the rise that he's had in the last few games here. And let's, you know, may God let it continue, Derek. Yeah. May, may,
Starting point is 00:19:39 freedom reign. Well, the Diamondbacks added, and that home run ends up being very important, obviously here with a seven to five score. They also tacked on another run in the eighth inning. I'll tomorrow Vargas had that double I was talking about. that ended his 0 for 22 streak.
Starting point is 00:19:56 His last hit, Damon, on May 19th. God bless that man for finally coming through tonight. I hope that feels good for him. He fist pumped around the bases, and you could tell it was just a very big moment for him to get back on track. Moreno brings him home with an RBI single that at the time gave the snakes a 7 to 3 lead.
Starting point is 00:20:14 And again, Ilymaro Vargas, one for four tonight, two RBI, a double. Adrian Del Castillo, one for three, with that big home run. and Gabriel Moreno one for two with two RBI's and a walk. So contributions all over the place, but Cotel Marte's home run, by far the most exciting thing that happened in this game. And really it felt like that lifted this team to this victory. Cotel Marte, your Kingsnake tonight.
Starting point is 00:20:40 Marte, one home run. He has a 10 game hitting streak now. He was one for five tonight, two RBI. Not really a night where anybody dominated. this was just how the Diamondbacks offense has been operating as of late. Don't get me wrong. We've been getting some huge games from Ketel. But for the most part, it has felt like this offense has been getting contributions from the entire starting lineup.
Starting point is 00:21:04 And at times you don't see guys really sticking out much. You don't see a bunch of multi-hit games. You see contributions from the entire lineup. And when they do that, they can win. Again, nobody had more than two hits in tonight's game. Diamondbacks have eight hits total. In fact, they got out. hit by the San Francisco Giants eight hits to nine, but they were just a little bit more
Starting point is 00:21:24 efficient and effective with what they did tonight. And Raphael Devers stinks at defense. He stinks at defense and he also stinks at calling ABS challenges. And we were going to talk about all of that on the other side of this break. Let's take a quick pause and we will be right back. You are watching the PHNX Diamondback show. Well, we can all use some help managing our energy bills probably all year long, but specifically at this time of the year.

Starting point is 00:23:50 Buchanids. Visit go p.nx.com slash events to RSVP for any of our World Cup watch parties. Sounds fun as hell. Oh, we're going to be having a blast during the World Cup. You know it, baby. Can't wait for us to pick our team for this show, by the way. Still want that trophy, that Don Julio, 1942 sitting over there. Like I was talking to get about it with Kevin.
Starting point is 00:24:12 I mean, I just, I can't live with a world where I don't end up with this bottle. Yeah, because you have more shots than everybody. Yeah. You have two shows. Yeah. And you also have a pretty vast knowledge of the game. Well, and I'd argue, you know, a great affinity for tequila and alcohol in particular as well, Derek, which I think, you know, coincides fits like a puzzle piece, fits perfectly. Great point.
Starting point is 00:24:40 So, you know, truly it means everything. I told Kevin that I need to have some sort of party. pregame situation where Mexico style, I'm pouring the shots into people's mouth all around the apartment slash house that we're hanging out in. So, yeah,
Starting point is 00:25:00 I mean, I'm, I'm already starting plans. And again, like I'm going to have a full-scale crash out if I don't win this. I know you are. I know you are.
Starting point is 00:25:09 It's going to be pain. I'm going to be mad. Don't worry. We're getting it done on this show, for sure. But you know who has been getting it done? Erod. Well,
Starting point is 00:25:16 the entire pitching staff, as you said, earlier. But, erod has this, and I think all the guys do right now, they have this ability to not have their best stuff, but it doesn't feel like necessarily getting strikeouts and such is the game plan. Don't get me wrong. I know every pitcher would love to go out there and have a 10 strikeout game.
Starting point is 00:25:37 I do feel, though, like, based on watching this pitching staff play now for two and a half months, they are pitching to contact. They are not pitching to strikeouts. They don't care about the numbers. The number they care about is the quality start number, the amount of innings that they go, the number of runs that they put up on the board. Everything else seems to kind of go by the wayside. I mean, walks also seem to be down and they seem to be definitely concentrating on, you know, filling the zone and attacking the zone. And I don't know.
Starting point is 00:26:10 Maybe I feel like I'm putting too much thought into this after asking Michael Soroka about trying to get ground balls and have them looking at me like I'm an idiot. it, but sometimes it feels like the... I don't really go out there and, you know, try to get ground balls. Decide the type of contact that I'm going to get, dude. I mean, maybe quit your job. A lot of pitchers I thought did. You should probably never show your face in this locker room ever again, actually. Damon's not exaggerating about the way that I was treated.
Starting point is 00:26:37 No, he absolutely is exaggerating. But, erot again, he has been, I mean, aside from the star against the Rockies that didn't really go his way, he's just been able to find a way to get there. This was another gritty start where he still gave the Diamondback six strong innings, but it didn't look like it was going to be a very good start. I gave up a one-out home run in the first inning to Casey Schmidt for his 12th of the year.
Starting point is 00:27:01 Like I said, that man was a menace all night long. He also walked back Chapman, which seemed to also happen all night long. But then he gave up the aforementioned triple on the Tommy Troy botched catch to Adamus, who scored on a Schmidt RBI single. And that was it. That was all that Erod really allowed.
Starting point is 00:27:19 I mean, he settled in. He got some key strikeouts kind of peppered around. He had six strikeouts on the night, but he really didn't, you know, have any one particular, got some flyouts, got some groundouts. But he, the most important thing was a huge strikeout of Raphael Devers to end the fifth inning that was assisted by ABS and bad home plate umpiring,
Starting point is 00:27:40 which was kind of the case all night long. But as you can see here, He used his forcing fastball a lot that maxed out at 92.8 miles per hour, averaged at 91. So he wasn't throwing it very hard. I mean, we poke fun at Paul Seawald for his fastball, right? Eduardo Rodriguez averaged 91 miles per hour tonight on his fastball. The thing was, is he had command of it.
Starting point is 00:28:03 He kept it up all night long. You only see probably a handful of that 44% of his pitches down below the belt line. And he complimented it really nicely with the changeup and the curveball. the night. Through the change up 23% of the outing, curveball 21%. Just nice complimentary pitches. Again, you see that curveball falling way out of the zone, staying nowhere near the zone. But again, the pitch shape and what EROG was doing tonight worked very well for him, even though, again, he didn't have his best stuff. Vlo was down on his fastball. Didn't really use his sinker or his cutter in this one much. but he did get six whiffs on the four seams,
Starting point is 00:28:44 six whiffs on the change-up, and one on the curveball. So again, another quality start from a Diamondback starter, another quality start for Erod. He gives the Diamondbacks six innings pitched, six hits allowed, two earned runs, walk two, struck out six. Since May 5th, hashtag the meeting, the deback starters have recorded an MLB leading 16 quality starts in their last 21 outings,
Starting point is 00:29:09 allowing two or fewer runs in 13 of those games. And the debacks have had eight seasons in franchise history where they have had 16 quality starts in the month of May. And that seems to be the most quality starts that they ever got. The Diamondbacks still have a few games left here before the end of the month. So this could be a historic month for the starting pitching staff, which would be fairly incredible considering this team's history
Starting point is 00:29:41 and how good the starting rotation has been for this team during certain decades. I mean, they got 16 in 1999. You remember who was there when they did that. They also got 16 in 2001. You also remember that. Excuse me, their franchise best.
Starting point is 00:29:55 I missed it here. Their franchise best was 18 in 2002, but the rest are 16. 16 in 06, 08, 16 and 09, and then 16 in 2011. We also know in 2002 who was on the team. I do remember who was on the team. It's a lot of, it seems to be a lot of culmination with guys named Randy Johnson and
Starting point is 00:30:18 that seems to be the big part of that. Our guy Stephen Bananas is here. It's always great to see Stephen Bananas in the chat. It's a party. It's literally a party when the Banana Man is here. And he is asking, what's this meeting I missed? Stephen, after the Diamondback starting pitching staff was unable to kind of go long in games, basically guys not name Eduardo Rodriguez.
Starting point is 00:30:39 Tori Lovela brought the entire pitching staff into his office for a come-to-Jesus meeting, aka Dad is disappointed in you. And for some reason, it worked. I can't explain it. Tori won't take any kind of responsibility for it. He says it's 1% about the meeting. I say horseshit.
Starting point is 00:30:57 There is no way. It is 1% about the meeting. The meeting happened, and then your team gave you 16 quality starts. of 21 starts. I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm here. Uh, uh, but, uh, but, again, like I said, once these plates start spinning, somebody had to forget about spinning the bullpen plate and the, the bullpen tried to make this one,
Starting point is 00:31:24 exciting tonight. Ginkle gave up a solo home run to eric house, uh, that was, I believe his third of the season. That's all he gave up in his inning of work. He gave up, uh, he did strikeout two, no walks. And Juan Murillo might be broken. I am just frustrated. At least he got out of this one, but he did look very bad to start the inning. He was giving up hard contact, gave up a run in his inning of work, but somehow turned things around. He did walk one, gave up one hit, one run run, did get a strikeout, but Morillo just has not,
Starting point is 00:32:00 he has not looked the same since he got that time off. And basically over his last, what, three outings, he just hasn't, has not been the same. Yeah. And I, you know what? I think tonight, like he didn't have it, but it wasn't. It wasn't awful. No. It wasn't a disaster.
Starting point is 00:32:17 No, it didn't feel like he was going to like ruin the game. Maybe for a second. It got a little iffy. But I think, you know, he last year's Juan Murillo would have just been walking every single guy. Yeah. And this year, you know, you still got, saw him get a couple outs, despite the fact. that he didn't have his best stuff tonight. I think that that could be a sign of like he's different.
Starting point is 00:32:40 He's better. He's not the same, you know, wild, crazy young pitcher that he was necessarily as a rookie. And now, you know, maybe he's a little bit more settled in. Obviously, he doesn't have his best stuff right now, but hopefully he can find it again. Still as a 2.9-1 ERA and it felt like it felt like the second half of his outing tonight was where things clicked. Hopefully it's the start of him being kind of dialed back in. Again, though, I mean, this is this, this is. is part of the, you know, the opposite side of the quality start situation with the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:33:11 When you got got, got, have guys like Ryan Nelson giving you eight innings for the first time in his start. And you got everybody going six or seven plus. There's just not as many innings to go around for the bullpen. And the more they sit, the more that this is a true possibility. It's not anybody's fault. And that's the reason why it sucks. Damon made a really good point, though. Even if Modio isn't as good as he was for the first.
Starting point is 00:33:34 what 30 40 games for this team at least he gave the diamond backs what he did over those 40 games right yeah we you know he was lights out yeah lights out and you know huge when this team needed him to when when there was a lot of one score games yeah that you're playing in for sure and he was the best reliever on the team shutting teams down so like i mean you you have to assume that that provided a ton of value for this for this team it it has to and again i i believe him and these guys aren't going to be perfect. So just like Cotel Marte struggled and then got into this stride, guys like Vargas and Morillo came out of the gate super hot.
Starting point is 00:34:14 And eventually, as our guy Jack Summers will always tell you, everybody regresses to the means eventually one way or another. Positive or negative. It's positive or negative. You're always going to come back around. Catele-Marte. What you actually are at the end of the day. Who somehow is now hitting exactly what you would expect a guy like Ctele-Marte to hit.
Starting point is 00:34:31 Right. When all season you've been like, man, Catell's really been. struggling. And now you're like, oh, he's hitting 275. He's awesome again. We're back. Well, I said it. We're 35 minutes into the show, Derek. Can we talk about it? We're back. Right? Like, we're truly back. We're six games above 500. We're a wagon. And that was going to be question number two. Are we in fact a wagon again? We're on a roll? Are we not on a goddamn role? Wagon's roll. I feel great right now. That's what we're doing. I feel great right. now, man. Yeah. Never left, as Terrence tidbits says. He never stopped believing as many of you
Starting point is 00:35:09 did. This team is rolling. Yeah. Well, I'll tell you, Paul Seawald, as we, as we, as we expected, gets his 13th saved out of 14 opportunities, even though he also made it exciting giving up a solo home run himself there late. He got an inning pitched one hit, one earned run, didn't walk anybody, struck out one and gave up that home run. Gonso started salivating when he was watching Paul Ceywalk pitch in the booth and not from like the sense of you know he's rooting for the dying backs more from the sense of i think gonzo wanted a bat yeah gonzow said let me go down there right now and hit that 91 mile per hour goodness down the middle of place if you give me a chance uh yeah well he's still effective and i don't know how but again like i said we we we throw a lot of shade paul's way but
Starting point is 00:35:57 paul first of all happy 36th birthday to paul uh uh truly a good dude uh really a good dude uh really excited about getting his, um, his charity set back up and again, got a strike out tonight for the kids. So Paul continues to add to that total. But, uh, you know,
Starting point is 00:36:13 again, look at what Eduardo Rodriguez did tonight. He gave this time and back's team six inning strong and he did it with a 91 mile per hour fast ball that maxed out at 92.9. And he threw that 44% of his outings. I played guys that threw that hard in high school, Derek. I'm saying, man.
Starting point is 00:36:30 I'm just saying like it's it is what it is. it might not be sexy. You're not going to see them fill up the, you know, the box sheet, the score sheet with a bunch of, uh, strikeouts and whatnot lately.
Starting point is 00:36:44 And it's the exact way that, that you should do the thing. It's not going to show the, the little fire, you know, going across the 100 miles per hour on the screen. Never, never,
Starting point is 00:36:56 ever, ever. But that's, that's fine. It's been good so far this year. And, you know, you really can't complain too much about what, what Paul Seawald is. giving you. Damon, today I looked up one of your favorite things in the world, which is exactly
Starting point is 00:37:08 where the Diamondbacks pitching staff is currently at as far as team ERA. Do you want to take a guess whole team? The whole team ERA. Not starting pitchers, not relief pitchers. The group together. The group together. Yeah. I'm going to guess 16th dead average. 4.06 16th. 16th in Major League Baseball. How about that for a poll? 4.06 ERA, Damon. I could just, I don't know why. I was just trying to read my guy, Derek, like a book.
Starting point is 00:37:42 And I was like, I feel like we've been talking about, like, when, when I made that Mike Hazen assembling this year's bullpen. And it was the adventures saying, you know, gearing up for end game going whatever it takes. Yeah. It really, you know, but in that tweet, I said 17th in bullpen ER. this is what that feels like. Like, we're dead average in baseball, and yet I feel like we have the greatest pitching staff ever assembled on a diamond on our team.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Like, I feel like we're the 90s Atlanta Braves right now with the way these guys are pitching. And I guess that's just life of being a Diamondbacks fan where you're just so used to horrific pitching year in and year out every year of my entire life. I'm like, well, the hitting is pretty, pretty good, but the pitching staff is in utter disaster. And now I don't even, I don't, it's, it's Ricky Bobby, it's Talladega nights.
Starting point is 00:38:39 I don't know what to do with my hands. And it's like, okay, we'll just put them down by your side. But I, but I don't know what to do with my hands, Derek. On May 4th, a religious day for those of us that love Star Wars. The Diamondbacks had the worst starting pitching ERA in all of baseball. That's crazy. Right? now they are 12th.
Starting point is 00:39:01 They are tied for 12th best ERA at 4.08, and they have those bums from Detroit and those bums from Toronto and their sights so that they could take over their spots and be in the top 10. And I'll tell you, man, like, it's crazy to think that this Diamond Bag's, you know, pitching staff was able to turn it around in such a short time,
Starting point is 00:39:22 but I think that's what makes me almost still skeptical. Let's see them do this now against some quality teams, which they do have on their schedule coming up in June. Obviously, they start out the month against the Dodgers here at Chase Field, which is the biggest test. But beyond that, you know, that's still our big brother there, right? So it's like beyond that, you also have some big matchups with the St. Louis Cardinals that have been playing some good baseball and a few other teams.
Starting point is 00:39:49 But June is also very winnable, right? So, like, you feel like after May, if the Diamondbacks can finish this series strong with the Giants, they go to Seattle, for a matchup with the Mariners this weekend. And again, that is a team that hasn't been playing great baseball either. So they have a really good chance to possibly win yet another series there against the Mariners. But the Diamondbacks are, that's the thing they have been doing. They have won now five of their last six series.
Starting point is 00:40:19 And they go on to go for the sweep here once again of the Giants after sweeping them the first time like 10 days ago. I just, you know, just kick the Giants and Rockies ass all year long. Yes. Like I, that's, I know that we've been talking about it a lot, but it's literally maybe the difference between making playoffs and not making playoffs, how you handle this stretch. Right. Because I think, right. If you play 500 baseball the rest of the way, but you, you go 10 games above 500 against
Starting point is 00:40:47 the Giants and the Rockies, you, that you're a wild card team. Right. That's it, right there. So, you know, I, the Diamondbacks. You can't split four game series with the Rockies. You can't turn around and lose a series to the Giants after you swept them at home. You got to keep your foot on the pedal. You got to keep boots to asses.
Starting point is 00:41:05 And you got to win against teams that you should win against. Like I said, the test are the test. This team is still going to get better. Those other teams, even if we lose to those teams, those teams aren't getting Corbyn Burns back. They're not getting AJ puck back, Jordan Lawler back, Pavin Smith back. And they're not getting Justin Martinez back eventually. those are no one's getting pave and smith back that's a fact right but when we get those guys back this roster is better right when lordis scuriel comes back this roster is better this roster is going to continue to improve they're going to continue to have roster crunch issues and there's going to be decisions made that we hate because there's probably going to be some young guys being sent back down that we aren't going to want to see set back now good problems to have but it's good problems to have those are guys are now death pieces guys that you know for a fact can play at a majorly league level and should something happen, or should you just feel like the guy that's playing
Starting point is 00:42:00 in their spot isn't giving you enough, that decision can be made as well to possibly replace them with one of those young guys returning to the roster. You just don't want to be burning, you know, obviously call-ups and you don't want to be burning minor league options multiple times in a season if you can avoid doing that. But again, these are all good problems to have, just like the Diamondbacks once again winning another game here against the Giants. Shout out to Jay Cuddy just becoming a member. Welcome to the family, sir. Love to have you.
Starting point is 00:42:30 Thank you for joining us. And then Groundhog Mama says, why. First off, I just want to sell the Supporters Club chat for a second. Cetel Marte Banana Bread emoji being made. We're going to figure it out. There's sciences involved. There's tests that need to be run first and several

Starting point is 00:47:48 could be a thing that could happen and then a domo frog mojee something we've talked about for a long time. They took all of our emojis away when it wasn't our season. I'm going to take all the sun's emojis away. That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to steal their chain. Like, no offense if there's a son's fan in here. But like, come on.
Starting point is 00:48:04 We could take a break for a little bit. This season ended poorly. Also, Groundhog Mama was asking about my chain, Derek. Crazy. The big two chain. Just now noticing it? Yeah. I've been wearing it on almost every post scheme show.
Starting point is 00:48:15 At least I've been trying to. Get yourself on screen, Damon. Show that two chain off. Because my best friend in the entire world, Derek Bontia, he's such a sweetheart. You can see this if I get it in the right light. It says domo. Domo.
Starting point is 00:48:27 It says domo underneath. Of course, for my guy, Heraldo Pridomo, my best friend in the entire world and who doesn't know I exist. And yeah, Derek got this for me. It can also be available to you and your children at the kids club at Chase Field. Or you could be a special boy like me, have connections and fight with your co-host. And then as a makeup present, he gets you a nice. Cool chain. I still feel like I'm going to lose that argument about Carlos Santana.
Starting point is 00:48:55 I think I'm. Let's just move on from that. But yes, Damon, yes, I'm proud. Proud to bring you a domo chain. And you're right.
Starting point is 00:49:04 Kids club, it's easy. You're going to games. You're taking your kid with you. Why don't you already have all the stuff? I would like to know the record since you gave me this domo chain. Oh, that's that.
Starting point is 00:49:12 People are talking about that might have saved the season. That's a really good point. Some people are saying that might have saved the season, Derek. Truly. I don't know. We might have to research that. We might have to put some work into that, but we do know what the numbers are from tonight's game, and we can take a look at that real fast.
Starting point is 00:49:27 I like Mexicadoo-Mexicole says Carlos Santana glove emoji. I like that one a lot. Because we're keeping that glove, Carlos, the matter what happens with your career. There's nothing you can do, Carlos. Yeah, we're not giving it back. We're sorry about that. All right, let's take a look at the numbers from tonight's game. Diamondbacks outscore the Giants, seven to five.
Starting point is 00:49:49 Giants had six extra base hits to the Diamondback. four. Both teams were not very good with runners in scoring position. D-backs were one for seven. The Giants were one for nine. Giants had some hard-hit balls tonight. 56% of their balls hit were hard-hit balls. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks just over 30% at 30.8%. The expected batting average, very close for both teams. 227 for the D-backs, 276 for the Giants. And the ABS challenges. That one was a little wild. O for two for the Diamondbacks, one for two, for the Giants. And, uh,
Starting point is 00:50:23 yeah, not great from that standpoint. Didn't, didn't love Ryan Waldschmidt's use of that challenge, especially when, you know, it was, uh,
Starting point is 00:50:32 I think it's still the sixth inning. Uh, and he was clearly wrong. There was also that. Um, but hey, regardless, I do love to see them at least using their challenges.
Starting point is 00:50:42 So there's that because I hate when they leave with, uh, challenges in their back pocket, especially in a close game like this. So every at bat is important. And every, game is important, which is why it's nice to see them, just finally whoop up on a team. I mean,
Starting point is 00:50:58 I know they kind of beat up on the Mets this year a bit, but, you know, they are five for five against the Giants. And you just love to see it. You just love to see the debacks not only beating up on any team in baseball and just really having their number, but specifically a National League West rival. You really do. You really do. Especially when, And, you know, again, it ended up being a little bit shakier. You only win by two. But you felt pretty in control of this game. Like, I wasn't sweating it too hard as a Diamond Vax fan.
Starting point is 00:51:31 Maybe once Paul Cuell, I gave up that bomb, you're like, oh, okay, let's get another out here, Paul. But, you know, it wasn't like, you know, like let's sit on the edge of our seats type of situation. And not much more you can ask for from a team that's, you know, just playing their asses off right now. I do have an update, Derek, for us on one Nolan Aronado. So as you talked about earlier in the show, experienced some groin discomfort that found him removed from the baseball game. Doesn't seem as though it's going to be too serious as of right now. Alex Dagastino, of course, our guy who writes for PHNX Sports.com. You know, he reported here, he aggregated via Todd Walsh, that Nolan Aeronato is day to day and will not have imaging scheduled.
Starting point is 00:52:18 So Diamondback's not elevating this to needing an MRI, needing to see what is kind of under the surface here. More just precautionary, it seems, and, you know, shelving Nolan in a game and in a moment when you felt like maybe you had control and just, you know, making sure that one of your older veteran players is healthy and, you know, can keep rolling. Well, and also Nolan's been really good for this team, right? but yeah he you know he's hitting 271 with an 810 OPS uh i mean he's back he's we're back he's back he's back i mean he's a big reason why all of fame bust when diamond back's hat on of course right he's he's a big reason why no one wants to remember as a rock no i know well whatever no one no one wants to be recognized as a cardinal either right uh no well overall i think that he is um like i said a big reason why this team was able to win some games when could tell
Starting point is 00:53:15 struggled. But even if he's just off his feet for a few games, it's probably time for that anyway. He probably could use a day off or two. It still looks like he's in a lot of pain when he's running around the bases. I think that might just be how he runs. It's just incredible because then he goes out there and makes like an amazing play at third base where he's diving and he gets up and he, you know, looks athletic and looks strong. And then you see him around second and he looks like, you know, the oldest man in the world. That's why baseball is such a. curious sport, right? Like, because you can have these guys that are not like what you'd call conventionally
Starting point is 00:53:50 athletic necessarily. But Nolan are in Otto will make every play at third base that you have ever asked him to, whether it's backhand throw across his body or diving plays. Like you, you name it, bear handing it. He's unreal. His hand eye coordination is top notch. Obviously, from a hitting standpoint, from a fielding standpoint. But yeah, you ask him to run in a straight line.
Starting point is 00:54:13 And it looks. completely unnatural and you're like what is baseball David Ortiz is a Hall of Fame baseball player he's if you saw him walking down the street you'd be like man that guy probably should should maybe get on a diet or something but he's a Hall of Fame professional athlete piece of Yoshi says it perfectly says no one runs like you'd expect a 34 year old to run like a regular 34 year old like a guy who you like see at fries shopping right next to you like rolling a shopping cart down like it's it's great it really is wild and then like you look at the NFL and it's like this three hundred and 10 pound guy runs a four six 40 and he jumps 38 inches in the air and you're like
Starting point is 00:54:54 what the hell is going on and they're just different sports man it's awesome yeah that's what makes baseball baseball I guess I mean Steve is uh guys Stephen bananas asking a tough question says when lawler comes back where does he play seems like waldi and Troy are here to stay I'm still doubtful that that Tommy Troy is is here to stay, you know, but. I mean, long term, yeah. Yeah, I mean, long term, obviously, but it does feel like Tommy Troy might be sent down. It also, I don't know, might be Tim Tawa.
Starting point is 00:55:25 They might turn to- Absolutely. I think Tim Tawa versus Tommy Troy is like a, I don't know if the decision that they make is going to be as easy as we want Tommy Trey getting everyday games. So let's just make that move now, which I think makes perfect sense. but considering his versatility he can play an infield and the outfield he can play the timtawa role and play it better than timetawa most likely right yeah it's just a matter of a bats and that's
Starting point is 00:55:48 kind of the problem for ozay fernandez and to be fair it was the problem for tim tawa as well tim tawa wasn't getting regular bats and i don't think anybody that doesn't get regular a bs is going to like continue to tear the cover off the ball it's just it's just so hard to be a you know an occasional player versus a regular everyday guy so yeah again that's that's the reason why we could see Tommy Troy potentially set down when when Jordan Lawler comes back but it feels like Waltchman's playing well enough to like cement a role both sides of the ball yeah defensively and offensively he's just been he's been too key he's been too clutch for this team and he really does just look like an everyday regular major league baseball player right Tommy Troy showed his
Starting point is 00:56:30 kind of you know lack of experience there with that with with that ball off his glove not I'm not going to like ostracize him for it because it was a outstanding play and he was this close to making it but also we should be talking about man what a play by tomby troy tonight right yeah and i mean again i don't want to split hairs too much about it but i do feel like you know a little bit more experience tells you if you're going to make that or not and play it differently so that adamas doesn't end up with the triple there or i think that really he catches it just most of the time it's just it landed in the mid of his glove it just it just popped out that could be an experience i can't be nerves. You never know, but I think that, you know, most of the time he's probably making that
Starting point is 00:57:11 play. Well, we've been talking about our D-backs takeover of Chase Field. And it's not that this is the last minute for it, but if you have been considering joining us out there, which is right around the corner, June 4th versus the Dodgers next Thursday, we're going to be getting together, stuff in our faces and all you eat, all-you-can-eat section out there at Chase Field. but can't wait if you want to get your piece of merchandise your choice of a hat or a shirt you need to purchase your ticket and make that selection tonight the order is going to be put in and it is going to be done in time for those items to arrive at the event next thursday so if you will still get your shirt or hat regardless of if you buy your tickets tonight if you wait
Starting point is 00:58:01 until closer to the event the only difference is is that it's going to take a little bit longer. I believe the shirt or the hat will be shipped to you instead of being made available at the event. So if you do want to join us out there for that takeover event, your ticket does include a hat or shirt of your choice and you can make that choice. Do it tonight. You get it tonight, get it all done in there. Our guy Spencer will make sure that your piece of merchandise makes it here in time for the event and you can pick it up on June 4th versus the Dodgers. Your ticket does include that piece of merchandise. It does include your game ticket to the bar as all you can eat and diehards, as always, get your 20% off your ticket.
Starting point is 00:58:38 So make sure to join us for that. It is Mexican Heritage Night, and we need everybody. It's an all-hands-on-deck situation against the Dodgers. We need as many of you people there. So let's get out there, join us. We have a fun time in the All You Can Eat section. And regardless of if you come out and join us for this takeover, we got another one coming out on August 25th versus the Cubs,
Starting point is 00:59:00 as Damon would say, my other favorite team. And that's going to be a similar situation. So again, if you do not want to miss your merchandise being available at that event, you can go ahead and pick up your ticket now for that August 25th event. And your merchandise will be there on time for that takeover of Chase Field, where we will be, again, just smashing glizzies, just glizzy goblin out there at Chase Field. It's going to be a great time. Let's go ahead and take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:59:27 And on the other side of this break, I'm going to explain how upset I am that a movement came to Chase Field that involved taking your shirts off and that I'm not involved in it. It was not organized by you, I think was the shocking part for people. David, there's a good chance that I'm going to break at least three rules in our employee handbook before this whole situation is done. But don't you guys go anywhere? We're going to talk about it on the other side of this break. You were watching the PHNX Diamond Back Show.
Starting point is 00:59:55 Going to get some calls from Saul. Oh, nothing terrifies me more than getting a, uh, a, uh, a, uh, a, uh, a, uh, a, uh, a, uh, a phone call and seeing it's Saul Bookman calling me. Bookman's calling you at me in the morning. Oh, God. Usually it's because I asked dialed him. To be honest, he's just calling me back, but it still scares me. And I will say this, that a great way to get over that fear, popping a couple of pure edibles before I get on the phone with Saul Bookman. But of course, whatever you need help with in life, whatever you need to calm yourself down, get some good sleep, elevate your mood. Pure Edibles has you covered. They have a full, they're a full-fledged candy company offering you a wide variety of candies,
Starting point is 01:00:31 not just gummies like so many other companies offer, though they do have gummies that aren't covered in sugar like their competitors. They also have chews, which are their version of soft candies like carmoles. They have kicks, which are their version of Starburst, hard candies, and new stuff coming out all the time. Their flavors are clearly listed on each tin, and their effects, more importantly, are clearly listed on each tin. So you know exactly what you're getting into every time you dive in to a delicious tin of pure edibles.
Starting point is 01:00:57 Plus they have their collaboration with Mother Road Brewing Company, where these two companies come together to form Noble Road and bring us the delicious Tower Station IPA all in one that I still feel like was invented primarily just for me as a person. It takes the finest IPA in all the land, Tower Station IPA coming from Flagstaff, Arizona, combines it with this smooth THC twist. You get all those same piney hops and crisp citrusy notes
Starting point is 01:01:22 that you get in that delicious beer, but now you get it in a good tasting high whenever you want it in a THC all in one device. So go find yourself some pure edibles products from one of over 150 dispensaries across Arizona, now including truly. And Arizona Lottery, they got those multiplier scratcher tickets and they want to multiply the good things in life. Damon and I would like to multiply the good things in life. Like we had some days off. Love to multiply some of those, am I right?
Starting point is 01:01:49 I know. That seems like I don't want to work. But it's more about just getting lots of sleep. I enjoy that. Multiply DeBacks wins there. Yeah. Yeah, let's multiply the amount of road trips that we take because I'm really feel like I'm missing out on not going up to Seattle for this series with the Mariners. Whatever you want to multiply in life, you can do that with multiplier scratcher tickets.
Starting point is 01:02:08 They have over $270 million in prizes, and that means you could win big enough to do more of the things you love in life. Multipler tickets start at just $1 and have prizes up to $5 million. Plus they have access to over 3,500 retailers across the state, meaning you can play whenever and wherever you'd like. Love to play from Arizona. Lottery must be 21 or over to play. And again, make sure you get those tickets for the big D-BACs takeover here coming up on June 4th. Love to see you guys out there next Thursday because then we can all watch this team continue their winning ways. And hopefully it continues against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Starting point is 01:02:48 And hopefully what that means is that it will continue to provide us with moments for people at Chase Field, including Baxter himself, to take their shirts off and wait. them around their head. Damon, I have been waiting all night because I was real, you know, I'm just gonna tease it for right now, got to come to the takeover, but if we win, we're going tarps off. You mean to tell me there was an entire section of people at Chase Field taking their shirts off and waving them around their heads and I wasn't involved with it? Three, three beat boxes deep on a Saturday evening. How? How did that happen? I'm furious. I'm furious. This is like when the diamond Kevin back's no to like break news at 1.30, 30 minutes after our show ends at 12 p.m.
Starting point is 01:03:33 That's what this is like. It's like people knew I wasn't going to be there on Saturday. People knew Damon and I were taking a long weekend and they were like, now is the perfect time to take our shirts off. I'm devastated, quite frankly. And I probably won't get over this until I get a chance to celebrate. So maybe the takeover is the right place, right place to do it. Yeah, I mean, it certainly would be pretty electric for us in the crowd. Do you hear the way he's talking? This is a man that has been directly, he has been directed not to allow me to take my shirt off.
Starting point is 01:04:10 They pulled him into a meeting and they're like, the meeting was actually right now. While we were on air, I was, the reason I wasn't on screen, Espo called me and he said, Damon, you've got to find a way to nix this before it gets any legs whatsoever. We can't have Derek take his shirt off yet again on the PHN export. It's a YouTube channel. They said that they're going to shut our channel down if you do so, Derek. YouTube said that. Yeah, well, YouTube, YouTube can kiss my hairy chest is what they can kiss.
Starting point is 01:04:42 Oh, man, I'll tell you, I kind of love stuff like this. I do this started off as like a St. Louis Cardinals thing, right? Is that where it originated? Well, in baseball, but it's been a, it's been a thing that kind of has been formulating since college football season where like I remember that's one of the first times I saw it was when I went out to the Colorado Arizona game in Boulder and RK ran out from the press box to meet all of the Colorado fans who are watching their team just get absolutely skunked by like 45 points and RK's out of the press box media credential in the pocket tarpe.
Starting point is 01:05:25 off just with all the boys, just in the middle of the way of the crew. So I would like to think I'm cut from the same cloth as Greg Braggs and RK. Well, what's funny. In that moment, Derek, I think now my immediate reaction is like, oh, we got to figure out we could do something for content. But in that moment, I didn't, like, it didn't click for me. Like, you know, it would be awesome if I went out and sat in the sea and, like, started getting some videos.
Starting point is 01:05:49 And then all of a sudden, I'm just scrolling Twitter. And I look over to my left where RK was sitting. And he's no longer there. And he's jumping up and down. And I'm like, well, that's one way to get some good social interaction when your team's terrible and down 100. Yeah. But yeah, we need to find a way to get you down.
Starting point is 01:06:07 Get you involved there. Look, the Diamondbacks. The mayor. They won a lot of games. Just your sash. Yeah. Oh, just the sash for my office. Now we're talking.
Starting point is 01:06:18 Now we're talking. I'll bring that with me when we do our takeover for sure. But the Diamondbacks win six to two yesterday against the Giants. And again, another great start. Merrill Kelly goes seven innings strong, gives this team four hits, two earned runs, two walks, 4K. Unreal. It's unreal. And I mean, again, that's we, the last episode we did was the one loss in the four games they played against the Colorado Rockies.
Starting point is 01:06:43 And since then, you know, again, they've been playing good baseball. They won a close one on Saturday by a score of five to four. And that one, Zach Gallen, did not give him a quality start, but he's still only allowed three earned. runs and five and a third innings pitched. And then on Sunday, Dimebacks took care of business in the finale over the Rockies in a big way by a score of 9 to 1.
Starting point is 01:07:06 And in that game, they once again got Ryan Nelson going career high, eight innings deep, giving up one earned run and six hits. That game felt like, that game felt like everything, right? Like that, I was watching that one, Derek,
Starting point is 01:07:19 and I was like, is this just not the best baseball team that's ever grace the face of the earth? I joke about the money. knee ball thing when Kattel hit the home run tonight, but like it really was feeling like Billy Bean A's. Yeah. I mean, everything's breaking right. Is this team ever losing again? People are wondering, I'm fired up right now. I am too, man, because it's just been a weird up and down season. Yeah, it has been. And it's, you know, it started out last couple seasons, truly. It started out
Starting point is 01:07:50 exactly as we expected it with three games against the Dodgers and it went as bad as we could have imagine, you know. Should have won, should have won most of them, if not all of them. Right. You lose all of them. Like, I would have rather lost 10 to nothing each of those games rather than how close they came and how well they played against the Dodgers. And it did feel like loser talk to be talking about how well they played them after getting
Starting point is 01:08:10 swept. But they did. They did play them well. And from that point on, they played some pretty good baseball. Given, like I said, a lot of those opponents that we thought were going to be difficult opponents over that first month and a half stretch ended up not being as good as we thought. they were going to be right and now you have a team you know conversely Derek you already mentioned it on the upcoming part of the schedule against the cardinals where you know like they weren't supposed to be good
Starting point is 01:08:33 but they have a pretty good record so sometimes it just happens like that in baseball but as you referenced already with jack summers like maybe the cardinals are due for a little bit of regression back to the meme it's nationals are same way national they're one of the best offensive teams in baseball right now yeah they are and hopefully they cool off by the time the diamondbacks play them on the other side of that series with the Dodgers. But then you have the Marlins, the Reds, a series with the Angels, a series with the Twins. Then they have Cardinals back to back with the Rays. That's probably the toughest. That's a seven-game stretch, four with the Cardinals, three with the Rays. But then you finish up the month with another three-game set against this Giants team that you skunked so far up
Starting point is 01:09:13 to this point, right? So like it really does feel like June is set up to be very winnable and to once again add to this, you know, six games over 500 that they currently have by the time all is said and done. It might not be a tremendous amount of, you know, wins, right? But if they're sitting at eight, nine games above 500 at the end of June, man, that's a pretty nice first half as you go into those, a very difficult stretch to start July before the all-star break because July is Brewers, Padres, Dodgers before you go into the all-star break. So you kind of got a stack as many wins as possible, considering how difficult that particular stretch is before the first half ends. And then Corbyn Burns flies in Captain Marvel style at the end of end game
Starting point is 01:10:00 shoots through the ship, which of course is the Los Angeles Dodgers in this scenario. And we get to say puck, yeah, all we want. Cairs it down to its, you know, its threads. And we're like, okay, the day is safe. We're winning it all. Can't wait. Can't wait. We thank you guys so much for being here with us. we got another 1240 start tomorrow. 1245. 1245 start. I believe, yeah. So we'll be back with another postgame show tomorrow.
Starting point is 01:10:26 And in fact, we're also bringing you a watch-along this Friday for game one of that Seattle. Wow, Sean called it. Is that what he did? Yeah, he said, are we doing a watch-along on Friday? It felt like the right time. 7-10 start. Me and Damon eating some Hawaiian food, watching some baseball and talking ball with all of you. So make sure to join us for that.
Starting point is 01:10:46 We're going to have post-game shows tomorrow and Friday. and then we'll have our 12 p.m. Thursday show with no game on Thursday. So make sure come back here for all of that. Make sure to hit the like button before you get out of here. There's a lot of you in here, and we would love it if you did that. It always helps the show out. Of course, you can follow us on social media. I am at cap underscore caveman with a K.
Starting point is 01:11:05 As always, Damon is at Damon Dog with a DAWG, and we're all Damon's dogs. Bark, bark. Our show is at Ph.NX underscore D-BACs. But as always, all roads lead to at PHNX underscore sports. Derek, I wanted to show the people something just kind of special right quick before we get on out of here. Please do. If you wouldn't mind. You know, you know.
Starting point is 01:11:25 If you would be so gracious. You know, when you like to apologize to players for things you set at them, you know you get the floor. And when you want to talk record and run differential talk, you know I'm all down for it. That's like sexy time talk to as far as I'm concerned. What do we got here? Uh, apologize to Max Simpson for the free advertisements here. Perfect. I mean, come on.
Starting point is 01:11:47 Guys, are we not back or are we not back? I think we're pretty back. We're not only just in a wildcard spot. We're in the second wild card spot. We have a half a game lead on the final wild card spot. What a weird season the Cubs have had. Yeah. Two 10 game winning streaks and a 10 game losing streak?
Starting point is 01:12:06 What the hell even is that team? I don't know, but I couldn't imagine what a 10 game losing streak would do to this podcast. I don't know if I could show up. Oh, yeah. No, I would, yeah, no, there's a good chance that you and I would quit before we reach 10 games. Yeah, I mean, but we're talking about the Cardinal series, like huge Cardinal series coming up here. Padres, next time we play them, that feels like all of a sudden that could be massive. Like, guys, this team, we're back.
Starting point is 01:12:31 We're so back. We're so back. And Tori is the greatest manager to ever manage a baseball team. Tori fixed the season. MLB Network had Tori being a life coach. It was kind of stupid, but I laugh. that it was pretty funny. Tories saved the season with hashtag the meeting.
Starting point is 01:12:49 Yeah, hashtag the meeting. He will forever be remembered for that. But again, we thank you guys so much for being Diamondbacks fans. We appreciate you being here. Come back and join us tomorrow for another post game show. It will hopefully be around what, like 4 o'clock. So pop in for that. Until then, hope you guys have yourselves a wonderful evening.
