Wait, so the Diamondbacks can get another team to blow their lead and they can win the game?
I guess so.
I didn't know that's how it worked.
Let's turn on this Cactus light.
Talk about a win.
Diamondbacks get one.
Thanks to Cattell.
And we are talking about this big win in 30 seconds.
Don't you go anywhere.
And to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast right here on PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as a man that doesn't really know how to celebrate wins anymore.
I got my guy, Damon, dog, on the ones in Tuesday.
And I'm so grateful to have you guys here with me watching this show after the Diamondbacks
somehow miraculously steal one in Texas from the Rangers winning tonight's game by a score of three to two.
And that comes one night removed after you could argue the Diamondbacks got a game stolen from them in game one late.
And trust me for all the Tory haters, I am going to rant and rave about that game later on in this show.
But for now, we're excited.
We're happy.
The Diamondbacks win.
They win this one by a score of three to two,
thanks to some late inning heroics there by Catelle Marte.
He single-handedly powered the offense.
It felt like in this one to win,
and the Diamondbacks figured out a way to get this one.
And, of course, I don't think, do we even, Damon, do we even wait?
You guys know, there's no surprise here.
Cotel Marte is your King Snake because this man won the game for the Diamondbacks
after Tori Lovolo got tossed after the Diamondbacks offense.
again kind of fell flat.
Catele-Marte came out.
You could say he powered them to tying the game there at 2-2 with his RBI single that
scored Jose Herrera.
But more importantly, Cotel-Marté sends the Diamondbacks to a win with a big solo
home run in, you know, essentially the two outs, top of the ninth inning, last possible
moment that he could do it.
This was a pitching duel between the Diamondbacks bullpen and Jack Leiter for the
most part. Diamondbacks, like I said, their offense didn't get much done in this one early on.
Their first run came in the third inning on a Blaze Alexander home run. That was his fourth of
the season. What is Blaze becoming? Is Blaze becoming one of the best players on this team?
Because honestly, defensively, Blaze once again shined tonight. Shone? Shined? I need you to check
my English on that one, Damon. Not sure. I don't speak for a living or anything. Yeah, I know. Neither one of us do.
But I mean, what a game and what a performance from Blaze specifically.
What a performance from Cattell in this one.
Again, Blaze's home run, 411 feet to center field is fourth home run the season.
I'm starting to believe, Derek, in Blaze.
I really am.
I mean, he really is amazing.
And again, I've talked about his attitude.
I've talked about his perseverance.
I think that there was a period of time where Blaze was very high on a lot of people's list as far as prospects.
but I think the idea that he played second base and infield shortstop,
he was essentially being blocked all the way around.
The infield, you also had the idea that Jordan Lawler was the third baseman of the future,
not Blaise Alexander.
I will have to say that Jordan Lawler, when he does eventually make it to the Major League Club this year,
he's going to have a tough battle ahead of him because Blaze Alexander is winning that battle right now
by leaps and bounds, and he just continues to be incredible for this team,
one for three tonight. He had a home run, one RBI.
Over his last 11 games, Damon,
going back to August 1st, he is hitting
368 with two doubles,
four home runs, nine RBI, five
walks, and he's been hit by pitches
twice.
Yeah. And again,
Killer X says
Loller sucks. I have no way
to really confirm that yet, but
I will say that for now he's going to have
like I said, a tough
tough time winning, playing time
against plays Alexander with the way that he's got
things rolling here in this season.
But Diamondbacks also had that weird seventh inning where, to be honest, they probably
shouldn't have scored their second run, but they did.
Thanks to some terrible infield defense by the Texas Rangers, it was definitely like watching
a clown show out there.
And with the way things have gone for the Diamondbacks, I'll take that.
Diamondbacks had a decent lead in the beginning of the game, right?
Then they also went on in game one, and then they went on.
to lose that game. This game, it felt like a little bit more of the opposite. The Diamondback
struggled there offensively. Kind of were waiting for the Texas Rangers to have their big
offensive kind of output, and that never came tonight. We know that this is a team that
struggles offensively as it stands. So, you know, again, tonight was one of those nights that
the Diamondbacks pitching took, took advantage of that. But again, the weird seventh inning
there, Herrera reached first and then makes it to second on a throwing.
error probably should have been out in the first place probably shouldn't have Jose Herrera
even making its first base let alone second base.
Pardomo then hits a sack bunt where he reached on a fielding error by Josh Jung, who is typically
a great defender over there.
So it was just a series of unfortunate events for the Rangers there to allow runners on the
corners in the seventh.
And then Cotel Marte hits an RBI single that brings in Herrera to tie the game at two.
But obviously the biggest hit of the game there is in the ninth inning.
where after yet another egregious strike three call,
Tori Lavallo finally had enough.
He goes in on home plate umpire Nate Tomlinson,
and he was then tossed from the game.
And boy, boy did Tori get his money's worth on that one, Damon.
He went over there.
What a terrible night from home plate umpire,
Nate Tomlinson.
Let's just address that.
Everybody on Twitter was talking about it.
I feel like this was such a bad performance
from a home plate umpire, that this transcended just the people watching the game.
And I saw general MLB personalities and such talking about some of these calls.
But usually it feels like it's like kind of an all over the place thing.
This time it felt like it was only Diamondbacks hitters who were getting low strikes called on them constantly.
You just had some low strike calls that were out of the zone.
You had some absolutely egregious missed calls as well in the zone.
like balls that were in the zone being called a ball balls that were way outside of the zone i think
we have the image of some of those um pitch of some of those misses here uh and i mean these are in
crucial moments you see these these low called strikes and yeah it's in the bumper zone whatever
the umpires will probably find a way to say it was still close enough to be a strike i mean but no
living human being can look at that and say that that is anywhere close to the zone the adc one is nowhere
near and it's crazy because that was with two outs right it was a huge moment both of these were
big moments the other one was raldo perdomo that was the strike three call that caused tory to lose
his mind and go out there and go off on Nate tomlinson I do love the fact that Tori is like
I know I get 15 minutes but I'm going to take 20 you know what I mean like he's like I'm going
to get every dime out of this ejection uh and he proceeded my favorite part about
this objection is Tori proceeded, I don't know for sure, but he proceeded to count off on his
fingers what appeared to be every single missed call that Nate Tomlinson made tonight.
And I think that when Tori goes out there and goes off, I grab my popcorn, I sit back and
I let him go, right? It's funny because Tori is a guy that like, I don't know. At times I feel
like Tori wants to be above a lot of this type of activity in the game, right? It's the reason why
he says he doesn't want to retaliate against his hitters being hit by opposing pitchers.
It's the reason why he doesn't do a lot of that like unwritten rules kind of stuff that
baseball teams tend to do, right?
But it's just so funny when he loses it like this because you just, you know he would
prefer not to.
You know he's embarrassed.
You know his mom's going to text him and be very disappointed.
Or maybe she'll be like, he deserved it.
I don't know.
His mom is very baseball savvy.
I bet his mom would back him up on that one.
100% though.
Like he tries to play like the nice guy the entire time.
Right.
And then when he really, you know, gets pushed over the edge.
Oh.
He is like the petty king.
Yeah.
You can just tell.
I want to see him kick dirt on an umpire shoes.
You know, I want to see him to go to that level.
Yeah.
Like Lou Pinella style.
Very much so.
Yeah.
I mean, I could only imagine like Mrs.
Lovolo has probably seen this,
the only other person who's seen this side of Tori.
Her and the umpires.
Oh, without a doubt.
Without a doubt.
Just argumentative.
I'll tell you.
I'll tell you.
You can get hot fast sometimes for being such a level-headed guy.
But again, it's funny because...
Derek, that's what you do to me.
You start counting off after every show Derek walks up to me and he counts off on his hand.
Every graphic mistake I made.
The thumbnail not quite looking up to standard.
What is this crap with runners in scoring position when it was supposed to be starting pitching ERA and really pitching?
It's terrible.
It's terrible.
I make sure that Damon is reprimanded after every single show.
But in this case, Cotel Marte is the one that did the reprimanding
because once Tori was ejected from the game,
Cotel Marte went off with two outs, nobody on, stepped in,
hit an absolute bomb to give the snakes a three-two lead.
It feels like every home run that's hit in the stadium is huge
because of how big that warehouse is at Globelife Field.
But 445 feet to left field,
111.7 miles per hour exit Velo.
It was Cattel's 22nd home run of the year.
And somehow that was enough with this weird
bullpen game that the Diamondbacks put together, right?
I mean, that's essentially what an Anthony Disclofani start
with only three innings pitched is for this team.
So somehow they managed a way to keep this terrible Rangers offense at bay
and win a game three to two.
Tyler Locklear was two for four today.
He had two singles.
and this one, again, it's small steps forward.
So I do really want to see that, you know, again, he get one step at a time.
But still, hitting 220 now with a 685 OPS, plays Alexander one for three with that home run RBI.
And again, like I said, Alexander's defense continues to impress.
He had a couple more than one play tonight that we could bring up that he definitely flashed some leather.
and again, it's not like, I don't want to get into this Gino, you know, Blaze battle that we got into on Twitter the other night,
nor do I want to get into the Randall Gritchick Andrew Hoffman, one that made me look very stupid after I tweeted it out.
But actually, no, that made Tori look stupid.
That one's on Tori.
That one's not on me.
But I will say that for the most part, you know, obviously Blaze is no Gino.
However, his defense so far makes us feel like, you know, we haven't taken too much of a step back over there at the corner.
Also, you know, his offense right now has been stellar and Gino has struggled for the Mariners.
Again, that is a team that continues to win.
They have won eight games straight.
So they don't even need Gino to be at his best right now.
They can let Gino struggle, get out of this slump and have him get back into the swing of things.
We know all too well how good Gino can be once he gets out of his slump and gets, you know, himself kind of in a groove.
So that team could be very dangerous once they have him running on a slump.
all cylinders and have that, you know, that pitching staff pitching the way that they are.
But again, Cotel Marte.
You're not allowed to mention Gino, bro.
Oh, I'm not.
Same thing for you, Killarex.
You're not allowed to say fire Tori in a chat.
I think your head would explode if I ever did that.
What is, oh, no, this is, oh, we're doing that.
More people are saying this is not healthy beer.
I don't, I'm not saying that Gino is going to continue to struggle because I'm not
going to die my beard.
I'm saying that Gino's not going to hit 40 home.
run so I'm not going to have to dye my beard that's what I'm saying I'm suggesting that I dare you to
hit 40 home runs you know at this point but uh good game here for them diamondbacks uh impressive
performance overall from the bullpen we'll talk about that here in the moment but um concerns at all
damon about the lack of offense in this one I I think uh honestly I think yeah you could you say that
you would I just we don't see them win many games like this so I feel like I'm just excited to
finally walk away with a close
one of those 50-50 games that it seems like the
Diamondbacks never get a chance to come up on town.
Yeah, I think so.
But at the same time, what do you wearing? Are you going
to address what you're wearing first?
Put yourself on camera and just not talk about your poncho, your Cardinals poncho?
I'm sorry, we're giving away some stuff around here at the office.
We're making our move to our new HQ.
Yeah.
And I happen to have picked up this gem.
And I'm just, I'm wearing it around town.
I got myself an evaporative cooler.
So, I mean, we're both.
Yeah, you got your portable AC.
unit and I got a cardinals poncho so I guess you could say that we're pretty even here
are these TVs unspoken for because I think you and I could really make ourselves some money
here off of this move but we are excited to announce that we're moving our pH and X HQ which
does break my heart just a little bit Damon by the way we've had some very good times in this
in this room in this building I'll never forget our warm embrace when the diamondbacks you know
clinched the national league championship there
It was the best time I've ever had in my whole entire life.
Not even close.
I don't think I've ever jumped up and down in my life with other grown men like that.
Like just, I mean, don't get me wrong.
We've had our moments.
I've jumped around when Paul Seawald coming out and such, right?
Something I'll never do ever again as long as I live.
He's a Yoshi mentioning my Ryan Nelson, you know, Nathan Avaldi bet that I had the other day.
We're going to address that game at a later time.
We don't need to address that right now.
Okay. Why are you bringing up old stuff?
Piece of Yoshi?
Why are you bringing up old stuff?
No idea what you're talking about.
Knight's 23 says that home run was personal by Cattel.
I think it felt that way.
It did.
I know that Cotel didn't stare down home plate umpire.
Nate,
whatever his name is,
as much as he should have.
He really should have looked.
Nate Tomlinson right in the eye and been like that one was for you.
But he did definitely have a death stare out there once he jacked that home run.
And man, it was great to see the Diamondbacks get that big win tonight.
And also great to see the pitching staff hold on the way that they did.
So we're going to talk about that more on the other side of this break.
Don't you guys go anywhere.

Well, Disco isn't dead, Damon.
Let me tell you that.
Anthony Disclofani, he might not be.
you know, the best option.
He might not be ideal.
You might not want to see him out there starting for this team.
Fire me up, Derek.
I'm trying to get you fired up about this.
But what I will say is that for being asked to do what he's being asked to do,
he's doing the best job,
considering how the Diamondbacks acquired him,
what he was brought on this team originally to do.
I mean, it's kind of like Ryan Nelson in a way,
Not the same results as Nelly, not as good as Nelly, right?
You don't want to see Anthony Disclophani in there as a fifth starter, quite frankly.
But he's going out there even in an ugly game like this where he doesn't have his best stuff.
And he's able to, I guess, use his experience to get himself out of jams,
get himself out of some of those bases loaded situations with only allowing one run to score.
It wasn't great, but it was enough tonight for the Diamondbacks.
And I mean, again, with the way that their bullpen is, this is probably the last thing that this team needs is a starter that can't go out there and give you a very long outing.
Tori pulled him after three innings and only 52 pitches.
Part of that was because out of those 52 pitches, Damon, he only threw 29 pitches for strikes.
So he was not very effective.
He was not hitting the zone very well.
But like I said, somehow he was getting out of these jams and somehow he gave the Diamondbacks.
He only allowed three hits, two earned runs.
He walked two and struck out three.
Let's go ahead and fire up.
Look, again, the amount of energy that goes into this,
the Circle K strikeout meter deserves better than three strikeouts.
But three strikeouts, nonetheless.
And again, if this was a home game,
remember, with every K, you win at Circle K,
tech strike to 31310 to start saving on fuel, food, and drinks after every Dback's home game.
if this was a home game,
Anthony Disclofani would have gotten you a free polar pop tonight from Circle K.
But again, like I said, Damon, not ideal, not the best outing from Disco,
but still impressed it all with the way that he was able to get them out of this one,
or at least give them a chance to win in this one.
Derek, he pitched tonight.
He went out there and he got on the mound and he used the ball.
He threw it to the catcher.
He got the baseball and threw it and he hit the glove sometimes.
So, I mean, that's about what I can say about Anthony.
He just go funny tonight.
He wasn't terrible.
He hasn't been bad for this team.
He's gotten out of some jams where it could have been a lot worse.
His splitter did the trick tonight.
I mean, he was able to get guys to ground out and get out of those situations.
Like I said, there were a lot of jams for him and only three innings pitched.
It felt like things were going to go sideways on him much more than they did.
But he did. He used his off-speed stuff mostly to kind of get out of a lot of jams. Also, speaking of sinker, Jake Woodford, very effective tonight. He also used a sinker quite effectively in his outing. And God bless Jake Woodford, right? Like, I don't know what the Diamondbacks would have done tonight if Jake Woodford wouldn't have been able to give the snakes the nice outing that he gave them. He actually goes deeper than Descalfani. He ends up going three in a third innings pitched, only allowing one hit, no earn runs. He
walked one and struck out too.
Like, I know at times we as fans, like Jake Woodford comes in, we have jokes.
We have got jokes for a guy like Anthony Disclfani.
But these are guys that honestly were perhaps out of opportunities in their career
and now have received a pretty big opportunity with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Damon,
like an opportunity to actually go out there help a team that absolutely needs it.
This isn't like garbage time stuff.
This isn't like, oh, hey, you're literally our last starter.
We're only going to put you in when we're down by eight runs or more or something in a game, right?
So like the fact that someone like Woodford has had his struggles,
but then can still come out and give the Diamondbacks, like two nice outings, you know, in a row,
if I'm not mistaken, makes you feel a little bit better.
It makes you feel like maybe some of these guys that haven't had the best season so far
can perhaps kind of be sifted through here and might end up being valuable pieces of
this team perhaps next season. Yeah, I mean, I think as far as Jake Woodford goes, you know,
his last bad outing per se was the was the Padres game where the Diamondbacks lost in extras.
Yeah. And in that game, if you remember correctly, he got the outs in the 10th.
Yeah, it was because he had to come back out for the 11th, right? And then he got rocked in the 11th.
He got shelled in the 11th. That's right. But if the Diamondbacks get the winning run across in the
bottom of the 10th, he gets the W in that game. And he's like maybe the hero. You know what I'm saying?
So I think, you know, for essentially since July 22nd, he gave up three runs to the Astros.
Since that game, he's been pretty decent.
You know, that's not exactly the largest sample size in the world.
But, you know, another good performance from him tonight.
And three and a third is unbelievable.
Unbelievable.
And I mean, again, I know this is a Rangers team that has been bad offensively this season.
As Damon pointed out to me, Adelaus Garcia hitting seventh, seventh in their lineup.
Like, that's crazy, right?
But the bullpen was a strength for the Diamondbacks tonight.
Woodford comes in, gives him three and a third.
Jalen Beaks comes out, gives him one and two-third innings.
He walked one, struck out one, no hits allowed, no runs allowed.
And then Juan Murillo comes in and a ninth and does the trick.
Gives the Diamondbacks inning pitched.
No hits, no runs, no walks, no strikeouts, no anything.
But gets out of it nice and quietly.
No men on base, nothing exciting, no fireworks, just simply outs.
and this one, again, credit to the bullpen.
The Diamondbacks have used their bullpen a lot, especially in these last two games.
So Jake Woodford going out there after Disco could only give them three innings,
probably deserves the Kingsnake as much as Catel Marte, to be honest.
I know that might be a little bit drastic, but this was shaping up to be a bad game for the Diamondbacks overall.
We already knew facing off against Jack Leiter and the Rangers team was going to be a tough matchup tonight,
especially with Anthony Discliffeani on the mound,
and the fact that the snakes were able to walk away with a win tonight is huge.
They should have had a win in game one,
which I'm going to scream a lot about here in a few minutes,
but they should have already won the series,
and they should be going for the S-word and the finale tomorrow
with Zach Gallen facing off against Merrill Kelly,
which is going to be just a heartbreaking matchup.
But hats off to the bullpen tonight.
We give them a lot of crap on this show.
We give them a lot of crap with our ladies and gentlemen,
in the bullpen gift.
But tonight, ladies and gentlemen, the bullpen.
They did the damn thing.
So hats off, like I said, to Jake Woodford, Jalen Beaks, Juan Murillo.
They all did the thing for the Diamondbacks.
And of course, like I said, we're going to talk about game one and me.
I'm going to scream about stuff a lot when we do that.
But we'll do that on the other side of this break.
Don't you guys go anywhere?
Are you watching the PHNX Diamondback Show?

about maybe some ugly numbers.
We're going to talk about these runners in scoring position
here in tonight's game because both teams
were awful and that is why the score
was so low, but let's take a look here
briefly. Actually, you know what?
Before we do that, before we talk about tonight's game,
I've set people up, Damon. Hold on.
Let's hold off on the graphic because
I want to scream about
game one. Now,
as you know, as many of you
know, I
go to war with
Killer X over
Tori Lavello. Not the rest of you. The rest of you are reasonable and normal people. And then there's Killer Rex, right? But there will, I probably need to buy Killer Rex a beer over what happened in game one. I know. Yeah, I probably shouldn't say that. I probably shouldn't have said that to him. It's already too much that's gone to his head. Because I was screaming at Tori Lovolo last night when he essentially lost this game for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
I don't say that often.
I do think that Tori makes managerial mistakes just as every manager in baseball does.
And honestly, if you want to say he makes more than your average manager,
I might be inclined to let you say that and not disagree with you and not argue with you about it.
However, I don't feel like Tori is to blame or is responsible for the way this season has gone
in the way that some of you may think.
However, last night was not the case.
last night was one of the most egregious mistakes.
I feel like I've seen Tori make all season long.
And I know, I know that their options in the bullpen are limited.
I cover this team, talk about it all the time.
In fact, I knew exactly what arms were available in the bullpen before the eighth inning.
I was tweeting about it.
I was saying it's got to be Andrew Hoffman, based on him not pitching last night.
Got to be Andrew Saul Frank.
Both of these guys are rested.
Both of these guys are good.
I imagine it's going to depend on where.
the righties and lefties in the lineup for the Rangers match up. We see Andrew,
super bad Hoffman coming to the game in the eighth inning, get the job done, hold the Rangers
scoreless, and keep the Diamondbacks one run lead into the ninth inning. Work was done.
applause were being given. I had given flowers out. I had said stuff about his stacks. I had made
comparisons to Randall Gritchick. And then this absolute managerial fraud,
Lavello brings him back out for the ninth and I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it.
Andrew Hoffman has been in the big leagues for a cup of coffee and to be fair he has been excellent.
He has far exceeded what your expectations for a young reliever coming into this.
I want to say a curse word, but I really shouldn't. And Damon's too busy to mute me right now.
But, you know, curse word. I'll just put curse word there. But he's done a great job.
There is something to be said about how you handle a young player,
not throwing them to the wolves to kind of figure it out.
And this is the worst situation I thought that they could have put a bit.
I don't care how many pitches he threw.
El Gaiio is here sitting.
He threw 10 pitches in the 8th.
Do you know what an updown is?
And do you know how most relievers aren't actually very good sometimes after an updown?
I'm not familiar with Andrew Hoffman in his history.
So perhaps the coaching staff and Tori Lobolo have a better idea of his abilities to go back to the dugout, sit down, and then get back up without really warming up and go back out there and pitch another inning.
So there is that factor that regardless of how many pitches he threw in the ninth inning that you don't really want to bring him back out there again or in the eighth inning for the ninth.
Quite frankly, I thought that it was a terrible move that instantly resulted in Rattie Tell is hitting a.
a game tying home run off of off of Hoffman.
And I think the fact that they end up going to Saul Frank in the inning is also ridiculous.
And then Saul Frank has to once again, he now has to have an up down where he goes back, sits in the dugout, gets back up, goes back out there.
Tori himself has described how different of an impact that is on a reliever than simply just worrying about the pitch count.
It's why in the past he's explained that he switched pitchers, relievers, just even though that they didn't have a very high pitch count, just because the inning ended and they got out of it.
A lot of times you see other managers make this move.
This isn't anything uncommon.
You don't typically, especially in a one-run game, run a young reliever that just made it to the major leagues out there to get a six-inning save against a team that is fighting for their lives for a playoff spot.
that seems simple to me that seems common sense i know so many of you guys out there are might might
disagree with that but i just think that this is honestly one of those situations where you can't
blame Andrew hoffman that this was a poorly managed situation the diamondbacks end up blowing
the game and losing it in the 10th it was their 37th blown lead of the year luckily
this is it this is this is the tonight
game kind of steals it back.
And that's fine.
O'Gaios disagreeing with me and he said, you said it, Derek, time to learn in regards to
putting the guys out there.
Fine.
That is absolutely fine that it is time to learn.
It doesn't mean that it's time to make mistakes and put guys out there.
Like in what situation do you ever really see a manager try to go to a guy for a six-inning
or six out save?
Am I wrong, Damon?
Like that seems like something that you wouldn't even ask.
ask one of the most elite closers in baseball to do,
unless you were just in a completely,
your hands were completely tied.
And you were just desperate to win a game.
Yeah,
I mean,
I think I kind of go back to what you said about Andrew Hoffman's,
and I feel like it's impossible to be taken seriously
every time I come on camera here.
It's really hard to look at you, yeah.
Honcho that I'm wearing.
It's kind of fire, though.
It looks like you're,
it is fine.
You have a subtle confidence wearing that poncho
that I can't really put into words,
but it's.
I might wear this to a Cardinals game,
Sunday since my Sundays are free this year. But, you know, it's more like I don't know what Hoffman's
career has looked like in terms of his updowns, like if if that's something that they truly
have scouted with him before. So I wouldn't be privy to that information. Same. And I'll concede
that that maybe there is something in his past that has said that he's able to go out there and
give you multiple innings and that doesn't really affect him. I don't love it on paper. I don't
love it because it's too it's too big of a moment, right? I mean,
I know this team isn't fighting for a playoff spot.
I know that.
I know that's just a delusion that I'm holding on to.
And Damon kind of is too.
Don't let him fool you.
But it's also one of those situations where the Diamondbacks don't have to manage this like, like wins and losses don't matter.
I don't really feel like that's the case.
I really do feel like this is a young, exciting team.
And this team that we have somehow inexplicably is winning baseball games right now.
I don't see why you don't just go all in with them and try to manage this like this is a team that is a contender is capable of winning and part of that would be managing the bullpen correctly.
I don't think they, I don't think Tori managed the bullpen well last night.
I think honestly his decisions led to the Diamondbacks losing that game.
I feel like you maybe swap Andrew Saul Frank in and bring him in earlier, bring back us in in the ninth.
I don't know if you could even go.
I mean, Saul Frank seemed like he was ready.
Saul Frank has had a great season this year.
I'm kind of tired of the righty, lefty matchup thing.
That's something you can do when you have the depth the Diamondbacks had at one point.
That's something you can do when you have both AJ Puck and Justin Martinez healthy in your bullpen.
But last night, that wasn't the case.
And I really do think that that was a huge mistake by Tori.
No one else makes that call.
That leads to the game.
And that's one in the column for the Tory haters for sure.
Let's take a look, though, at tonight's numbers because the Diamondbacks did win tonight's game.
So it's kind of funny.
Tonight's game felt like one.
They shouldn't have won, and they did.
Last night's felt like a game that they should have won and lost.
So, hey, maybe that's how things even out here.
But the Diamondbacks win this one by a score of three to two.
They out hit the Texas Rangers 8 to 4.
Both teams awful with runners in scoring position.
The Diamondbacks won for 11.
The Rangers were 0 for 9, as Damon said, one for 0.
11 feels like 0 for 9.
So it's basically the same thing.
Diamondbacks, though, four extra base hits,
including those two big home runs by Blaze Alexander and Coutel Marte
being the difference makers.
The Texas Rangers had one double tonight.
Expected batting average, basically a push.
2.14 for the Diamondbacks, 218 for the Texas Rangers.
And Elizabeth, aka Zabe, says, ha, ha, ha, the wrist.
Yeah, a baseball game was played.
A baseball game was played.
Damon, do we have some super chats to address?
It looks like Yoshi is prodding me to get to the superchats.
Let's see.
We'll start with Yoshi's.
Yoshi says, Derek, trying to find someone to blame like he didn't set us up with a certain subset of tweets that probably cursed us.
See, this is one of a piece of Yoshi's worst takes ever, quite frankly.
He was trying to dunk on me last night, Damon, simply because after Andrew Hoffman was removed from the game and what I believed with the end of his night at the end of the eighth inning,
I put up his stats through the eighth inning and compared them to Randall Gritchick's stats over there with the Royals, considering that that's who he was traded for.
And so far, so good, it would have looked pretty good.
He did only give up one more run, so it's not like it causes ERA to go insane or anything.
However, no, no, I'm not doing this curse thing over any goddamn thing I say.
Stating what his stats are is a fact, right?
We've gotten so off course with what causes curses now.
like a curse used to be when you say online that's it they're going to win this game and then they
don't you fool but stating stats now is a curse stating a guy is six for 18 with runners in
scoring position is a curse no these are statistics these are facts facts are fine we're allowed
to put those on twitter it's my job what else we got i'm not doing this with him it seems like
maybe you're trying to paint a picture that you know maybe the diamond backs got the better end
of the deal and then immediately in doing so, you cursed super bad Andrew Hoffman?
I feel like Tori cursed him by putting him back out there for the ninth inning and expecting
him to get six outs.
We figured out why Derek is so mad at Tori because it made him look silly on Twitter.
No, no, no, no, we're not doing that.
I am mad at Tori because he made super bad Andrew Hoffman look bad.
That's why I'm mad at Tori.
I'm mad at Tori because he lost that goddamn baseball game, Damon.
I was screaming things that you've never heard come out of my mouth last night during that.
I think at one point I said leave him in Texas, but that's a whole other thing.
I was emotional.
What can I say?
Candice said for $5 said if the umps actually called the pitches correctly, how do you think this game would have ended?
I don't know.
There is literally no way to know that.
She is so right because this game was so all over the place.
And honestly, maybe ABC hits like a bomb or something in that moment.
Perhaps.
You know, you never know what happens.
nothing happens in any of those moments and perhaps the lack of egregious calls doesn't allow
Tori to go off and get kicked out of the game and then somehow power up Kutel to
hit that game winning hit there in the night I don't know I don't know what do you think am I
going too far on that one I just feel like again that's an alternate timeline that we don't live in
but I would like to live in an alternate timeline where umpires can make better calls than that
you do the BCSC yeah we got BCSC back uh the cake shall be eaten then we eat it
Noah 1514 as if Noah had an excerpt in the in the Bible.
Noah Wolberg of course of the H&X sports.
Blaze got no booty straight pancake back.
No.
That's not fair.
No.
That's not fair.
That is not true.
It's quite frankly not true.
The man's got a whole cake.
He's got a whole cake back there.
What do you got?
I don't know, Derek.
You might have to ask Blaze about that next availability.
No, we're going to have to interview him about that and get his thoughts on BCSC's comments.
Blaze, how do you feel about the allegation?
that you have straight pancake back.
Yeah, flat back.
They said you're a flat back.
Big back, no bump is what he said.
Small body.
Yeah, small body.
BCCC says, I mean that national championship will stay in Columbus, Ohio.
Home is the greatest in the reigning, the defending.
Does he's watching?
legendary Ohio State.
We're not doing Ohio State and Cardinals talk.
We're not doing that.
Stay on their shows.
We rewrite failures, not tragedies, go D-backs, and then finishes us off with.
By the way, us Seahawks like the Cardinals, we hate the Rams.
the Niners so Blaze up sore high and always remember the Rams suck and the Niners are the Cowboys.
So BCS is a Seahawks fan.
I will not soar high.
I refuse to do that.
And then Calvin, $9.
Thank you, Kyle.
Says, no hate or blame here.
Good win for our snakes.
Hope they can win the series tomorrow.
See, why can't more of you be like Calvin?
Right?
Calvin has the right attitude.
Derek's life would be Utopia if everyone was just Calvin in the chat.
It would be so good.
But, well, I don't know.
David, we got, we got your problem.
favorite part of the show here coming up before we do that.
Oh, I can't wait.
And everybody knows what it is.
I know.
Everybody knows what it is.
But I will say this.
Everybody's got to join us for the PHNX Cardinals residency.
We're all going to be out there at Heila River Resorts and Casinos Wild Horse Pass on August 28th because we are having our fantasy football draft as well.
But that's just the main event.
That's just actually, that's like the dessert.
That's the Tierra Missou to the night because you get a whole entree of Johnny.
and the PHNX Cardinals crew with NFL diehards for the residency night on August 28th at the Upper Deck Kitchen and Bar.
The Cardinals Live podcast starts promptly at 4.30 p.m., followed by the NFL season preview at 6 p.m.
And then the PHNX staff fantasy football draft at 7 p.m.
We got some surprises.
It's going to be live streamed.
We're going to have ourselves some commentators once again, giving us the business about our draft picks.
We're going to have a great time.
So come on out and join us.
All die hard to attend.
We'll receive a free drink ticket for the event.
And I think almost all of us from PHNX will be there.
I do think the Mercury crew has a game that night.
So they're going to be trying to make it over there as well.
But for the most part, I think we'll all be out there.
So make sure to come out and join us.
We're going to have a great time.
And then when we're there, Damon can tell you about all of the criminal allegations against Shoah Otani.
Or at least any kind of lawsuits that are currently pending.
But before we do that,
Let's take a look at the drunken orgy of violence that we call the N hell West.
Man, you got me chomping at the bit over here, Derek.
I got a muzzle on right now.
I know.
Well, let's intro at first with the NL West because, of course, we got to see where our sweet, sweet diamondbacks land currently in the wild card and the divisional race.
Dodgers literally have the Padres breathing down their neck.
They have had a terrible month so far here in August.
and they are in real danger here of having the divisional race be a two-team race here
because actually it is.
I mean, you could just say it is.
The Padres are one game back in the division.
The Dodgers currently sit at 68 and 51.
The Padres sit at 67 and 52.
They are one game back in the division.
There are three games back in the wild card.
Peace Fioshi in the chat says, come on, Anaheim.
Let's make this even more interesting.
Giants, they are one game below 550 and 60.
they fall back even further.
They are nine games back in the division
and five games back in the wild card.
Meanwhile,
the Diamondbacks
sit in just a real weird,
awkward position,
probably just about the same spot as the Giants.
They are 58 and 62,
10 and a half games back in the division
and six and a half back in the wild card.
Knights 23 asks,
are we seriously still hoping for the playoffs?
I don't think so.
But what?
It's not out of the.
the question. It's not out of the question. I would say, I will say this. It's kind of like what I said before about the playoffs and the Diamondbacks making it. What are they going to do when they make it into the playoffs if they do, right? Like you still don't feel like their odds are very good. I don't like that conversation because anything could happen. We did this when they made it to the World Series, didn't we? We were like. They limped into the playoffs. And we were like, who cares? They're going to get beat by the brewers in the first round. And then all it takes is, all it takes is catching fire and things going your your way a couple of times.
Let the snakes get hot.
Don't let us get in.
Don't let us get three because then we'll get four.
Remember that?
Derek, so help them God if they let us into the playoffs this year.
It would be the biggest mistake they've ever made in their entire lives.
I think Emily just dropped a super chat.
Damon, what was that?
Let's get to that one real fast before we scream about Joey Otani being a criminal.
Emily says, we're, oh, she still wants the DeBax jersey list.
Yeah, I've still.
I've still been slacking on that.
Thank you, Emily, for calling me out on what a procrastinator I am.
I will get that jersey list updated for you.
I do have time now.
Now I have time.
Because, again, as Knights 23 pointed out, we probably shouldn't be worrying about the
playoff hunt, but we are.
We are because it's baseball.
Baseball's funny.
Anything can happen.
And at this point, who knows, all it takes is the Mets to continue playing some of the
worst baseball they've played all year and maybe some of these other teams to also
kind of drop out of it to make
it at least interesting, right?
That's I think what we want more than anything.
Maybe not hope,
but it would be nice to be within
four, three games and
then kind of, you know,
again, getting, getting
a little bit of a reason to
watch every single game until the end of
the season. Ernesto brings up
that the Cubs are not looking too hot at the moment.
So again, you just never know in baseball.
I mean, sometimes you play your worst
baseball during a stretch and then you
figure it out and then other teams play their worst baseball during a different stretch.
But speaking of being bad, worst behavior, there's more bad behavior apparently from
Shohei Otani, according to a lawsuit that came out.
LA Dodgers star Shohei Otani and his agent are being sued in a $240 million
dollar Hawaii real estate deal.
And Damon, this one, this one seems a little shady.
And I know that you love when Shohei Otani does shady stuff.
But what I do have to say.
I don't love the fact that there's a criminal on our streets, Derek.
I actually don't love that.
This is, this is, you know, the land of-
I thought we were starting crime, stopping crime.
I thought that was, that's what we were doing.
We were trying to get all the crime off the streets.
This is the land of freedom.
And meanwhile, Shohei Otani's going around and he's stealing money out of children's bank accounts.
and people are just allowing it to happen.
This one's wild because what this alleges is that Otani was brought in on this real estate deal to be like as an endorsement deal.
He was brought in in 2023 to so that they could boast that show Hey Otani is going to be, you know, living in this.
It's like a vacation area, right?
in Hawaii or like vacation homes and they wanted to utilize the fact that show hey otani was going to be
living there as part of the allure to to both uh american and japanese uh tourists and and people wanting
to buy vacation homes and it would seem according to this lawsuit that after being brought in
as a endorse for an endorsement deal that show hey otani and his agent
just kind of slid their way into being part of the deal itself and then pushed essentially the plaintiffs in this case out of the deal.
That's interesting in all, Derek.
But have you seen Shohei Otani's new cat that he just got?
It's so cute.
It's a little tiny kitty cat.
And they named him Buster.
And it's the cutest thing ever.
It's actually going to lead MLB tonight.
So I don't know if people really care about that news.
He named his dog decoy.
How did we not see this coming?
It's right in front of our face.
It's right in front of our face.
And we were just like, look at how cute the dog is.
They did a bobble head with the dog.
I need the bobble head with the dog on it.
The dog is whose name is decoy.
Apparently he has a cat already named Mittens,
according to a piece of Yoshi.
But Derek, I, you know, I want you to continue the story here.
I just, I can't help it but feel bad for this guy.
All the people that he hangs out with the most in his life are all bad people.
I guess.
And somehow he's just tweedled dumb walking around.
He has no clue.
He thought he trusts them.
And he's the good guy.
And everybody else is just screwing with his money and taking advantage of people.
It's crazy.
I've never seen anything like it.
I will say that there comes a point where you are culpable for what is happening on your behalf.
Right.
And when...
If all you hang out with is bad people who commit crimes, I got news for you, buddy.
You're probably in the crew.
I think the problem here is, is that we've seen this happen in the past and we get...
It's easy to have conspiracy theories about this or not even a conspiracy.
theory. Just say when there's there's smoke, there's fire. And when you keep having stuff done that makes you look like a bad person, right? That would bring you essentially scrutiny as a human being where other people would say, you are a bad guy for doing that. There's somebody else to step in and take the blame. In this case, it's his agent, uh, Bilello, who is apparently taking on the blame now for this. Uh, but Otani and Bollelo are.
accused of making threats and baseless legal claims to force this business partner to cut ties
with the plaintiffs, effectively removing them from the project that they say they conceived
and built. They spent 11 years putting this deal together. And the, you know, kind of the
icing on the cake here was to get Shohei Otani involved as an endorsement of this deal.
and he just kind of weaseled his way
according to this lawsuit in on the deal
and push people out
you know
that doesn't that doesn't sound like the show hey I know
good old ruthless aggression you gotta love it
that's my favorite thing too the people that are like
that take show hey side like they actually know him
personally when he's like a notoriously private person
and they're like show hey would not he would not do that
he wouldn't he wouldn't do that and you're like how would you know
you've never talked to the guy
most people haven't talked to him because he's
as I said pretty private with his life
so I don't know
man it seems as simple as if it walks like a
duck and it talks like a duck right
it's probably a duck and he's
he seems to be a white collar criminal
like I'm just going to put it lightly
the allegations are there for him to be a white collar
criminal but the I guess
the importance
here of it on MLB season is that
this does come at a time when the Dodgers are already
reeling. They're already kind of
struggling to, they're not the best team in the league
by far, right? Which really
good for them to realize that finally doesn't matter
that they don't need to have the best record during the regular
season and that it's meaningless when you get around
to the postseason. That title now belongs
to the Milwaukee Brewers for the time being. But
again, this Dodgers team
is struggling. They have the Padres
breathing down their neck and having
a scandal of sorts
for one of their biggest stars.
It doesn't seem like it's the best
time for this, right?
And this could strongly impact the NL West race here.
I will also say the Dodgers don't strike me as a team
that kind of galvanizes over things like this,
the same way I've said that the Padres do.
I feel like the Padres have a lot of FU energy.
So when they start having stuff like this,
it brings them closer together.
And guys like Machado and Tatis do you do.
I was just like, they have many Machado.
Yeah, he's just like, come here.
Come here.
We're all going to hug.
and we're all just going to say F them together, right?
Like that's a clubhouse that does that when something comes up.
And I feel like.
I want to say the Dodgers are chokers, but they just, they just.
Right.
I mean, it's not, it's more of like what it could do to their season at this point
and how it could derail things for them.
I mean, they're not going to miss the playoffs by any stretch of the imagination.
But, I mean, the Dodgers winning the World Series now is far from a foregone conclusion.
There are so many teams in baseball right now playing better baseball than them.
And quite frankly, having something like this come down on Shoah Otani right now at this particular time doesn't help them at all.
No, it's just negative press.
And, you know, obviously I'm excited for the next Mookie Betz disaster class in the playoffs.
You know, he's like a 250 career playoff hit or whatever he is.
Can't wait.
Can't wait for the postseason.
But yeah, I don't know.
The Padres just feel like they're catching so much momentum right now, don't they, Derek?
Yeah, they really do.
And I don't know.
If you're Dodgers fan, I wouldn't.
at this point all we can really do for the diamondbacks is route for that one wild card spot
become available and yeah maybe it's not to sit there and hope that they actually do make the postseason
maybe that is delusional but considering that we sit here now on the 12th of august and have essentially
a month and a half left of baseball ahead of us don't you want them to at least be in it to make
these games feel a little bit more relevant feel a little bit more fun to watch i mean that's what
sports is about. The 162 game baseball season is already ridiculous. It has no business being as long
as it is any longer with the lack of divisional play like we used to have. These games don't mean
nearly as much. And again, this season doesn't need to drag on the way it does. But baseball will
never change that because it makes far too much money. So instead, we have this with this team that
right now is still below 500, still not playing the best baseball. I did like El Gaios comment about the
heckler we heard him on TV there was a guy that was like chanting like world series at kattel right
before he hit that home run that was pretty that was pretty excellent to see I guess it was
more than one person after a while but there was one guy that started that stuff but again it's it's
just chaos can can can make a lot of things happen here with plenty of time left in the season so
let let's let's at least have a little fun watching baseball uh and
that's why we do this. Knights 23, who I don't even understand what the point of watching sports is
if you're just going to be miserable about not making the playoffs? I don't really know. I mean,
again, that's the reason why is because the Diamondbacks are six and a half out. Could be six.
Still have four games here left against the Rockies before moving on to some tougher opponents.
And again, they have a chance to close out the series against the Rangers to play.
should have a chance, like I said, to get the sweep word done, but that...
You just, I mean, you just did it again.
Well, it's gone now.
It's not that they don't have a chance to get the sweep word.
They lost the first game.
True.
We can't go back in time and change that out of them.
Right.
That's a fair point.
So I can say the sweep.
I mean, I think as far as wild card and playoffs are concerned,
Derek and I aren't sitting here being like, it's going to happen, guys.
Just wait on it.
It's more so that like we have to, the whole point of this podcast is to talk about the
standing of the team.
and right now they're six and a half games out.
That's...
I would just prefer it even if I didn't do this damn show one time ever in my life.
I would still rather watch a baseball team I root for be close and have a chance.
Try to win.
No matter the state of the team rather than not.
You can't take in baseball.
You can't take in baseball realistically.
Right.
And it's a steep climb, but, you know, it's not an insurmountable amount of games to
to cover from the end of the season from now to the end of the season.
So I think it'd be ridiculous to act like,
It's, you know, just completely out of the question.
Yeah.
Well, as we were talking about Shohei Otani being a criminal, apparently he hit home run,
damon.
So you did that.
I'm going to say you did that one, but I don't know.
I don't know.
I hate that for me.
Yeah, I know you do.
He also hit into a triple play tonight.
Did he really?
Yeah.
Oh, wow.
I got to go see that.
I got to go watch video of that.
So we're going to get out of here.
But we appreciate you guys so much for stopping by.
Thank you guys so much for your time.
Of course, you can follow.

We got a super chat from our girl, Emily
Williams and Emily says, sad match of Merrill
Kelly versus Zach Gallon tomorrow.
Not looking forward to that. Not looking forward to that.
Brother versus brother.
So unfortunately
we get that. But hopefully Zach
gallon comes out on top. Catelle Marte called Merrill Kelly his best friend on the postgame
broadcast. Everyone knows. Everyone knows Merrill's my best friend. Everybody knows that Merle Kelly
and Catel Marte are best friends. Maril just found out he was Catell's best friend tonight.
I mean, Zach will tell him about it when they're golfing tomorrow morning or whatever. But
again, we appreciate you guys so much for your time tonight. Thank you guys for stopping by.
We'll be back tomorrow with another midday postgame show for the series finale.
So make sure to join us for that.
We'll also have a postgame show on Thursday.
And then on Friday, it's our move day around here at PHNXHQ.
So we'll be bringing you a show at noon on that day.
So until then, we hope you guys have a wonderful evening.
We hope you guys behave yourselves.
And I hope you enjoyed this win by Catele-Marté and the crew.
We'll see again tomorrow.
Until then, have yourselves a wonderful evening.
And remember, kids, baseball is fun.
but it's so much more fun when you steal a game instead of having a game stolen from you.
