Well, Merrill Kelly was outstanding tonight, but the D-Backs offense was not.
Diamondbacks lose this one by a score of one to nothing.
We have more on this game, even though I'm sure most of you don't want to talk about it.
And also why Zach Gallin suddenly being good further complicates things for the snakes at the trade deadline.
Don't you go anywhere?
We're starting in 30 seconds.
Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast right here on PHNX.
My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of,
PHNX and you are here on a night where the Diamondbacks offense completely abandoned
Merrill Kelly while he tossed a gem for this team going seven innings only allowing one earned
run and a loss to the San Diego Padres of course this show is brought to you by our friends

Welcome in, gang.
Glad to see you guys here.
Glad to see the feelings in the chat are what I feel deep down in my heart.
I see an F word.
I see an ugh.
Why can't the debacks win?
And I definitely see some things about pitching.
The pitching wasn't the problem tonight, Albert.
I'll tell you this much.
The problem tonight was the Diamondbacks offense.
They get shut out just for the third time this season.
Diamondbacks lose this one by a score of one to nothing.
A true pitcher's duel here by Merrill Kelly and Nick Povetta.
Diamondbacks record is currently 45 and 47.
And since June 23rd, the debacks actually have one of the best offenses in baseball.
Their 71 runs scored are the second in the National League behind the 75 runs scored by the Cubs entering play tonight.
But their offense, like I said,
abandoned them completely tonight.
Third time this season, the Diamondbacks have been shut out.
But the first time, this one comes from our guy, Dalton Feely, over at John Boy.
This is the first one to nothing loss versus the Padres when having three hits or less in Petco Park in franchise history.
So that is definitely a pitcher's park, but yet that's never happened before to us.
This is not on Merrill Kelly tonight.
This is definitely a night where Merrill Kelly shined and didn't get the support.
And by the way, I didn't give a shout out to my producer, Noah, on the ones and twos,
who's putting up with me in the absence of Damon.
So thank you, Noah, for being here tonight.
But again, this was, I wish they did better for you.
You got your World Series hat on.
You're all, you're ready to go.
And the Diamondbacks did not show up for you tonight.
That's for sure.
I know.
It was extremely disheartening.
and I just don't think I can ever come back from this absolute devastation of a loss.
I'm sure you can't.
But I mean, honestly, this is one of those games where like this is what I feared.
The Diamondbacks do have one of the best offenses in baseball, but their pitching has been atrocious.
So if their offense struggles, if they go into a stretch where now they've had a couple of shutout losses here over this last week, that, you know, again, you're not really seeing the Diamondbacks be able to win these low score.
boring close games and with their offense kind of struggling.
You can see how much the starting pitching has had to kind of step up their game.
Zach Gallin was incredible in game one of this series.
We'll talk about why he being good right now.
Further complicates things for Mike Hazen and the front office.
But Merrill Kelly, what the hell got into Merrill Kelly tonight?
I need to know.
We need to know.
He was drinking pickle juice.
So is pickle juice the answer from now on?
Is pickle juice Merrill Kelly's spinach to his pop-eye?
I don't know.
Is that metaphor? Am I aging myself with that metaphor?
Do I need something more recent?
Is it like the prime for...
How about the Riz to the Skibbidi?
Riz to the Skiviti.
Yeah, that's a little bit more model.
I don't understand words like that anymore.
But yeah, I don't know if it was the fish tacos.
I don't know if it's the fact that he was in the same city where San Diego Comic Con is going to take place.
And that somehow gave him superpowers.
But Merrill Kelly, his Velo was way up today.
They were talking about it on the broadcast, obviously.
his four seam fastball maxed out at 95.7 miles per hour today and average 94.2? What?
His Velo all year long hovered around. His average was around 91.8. So he was up three to four miles per hour above his max Velo today. But more than more than that, I mean, he wasn't really using that velocity to go out there and try to strike batters out. He was getting a lot of soft contact.
early on.
There was only two or three hard hit balls off of Merrill Kelly.
He was just super,
super efficient,
getting a lot of that soft contact.
And he threw a nice mix of pitches.
I believe we have his pitch chart here.
And just the combination of pitches here,
you can see this eclectic mix of colors here.
He threw his four seam,
32% of his outing.
He threw his cutter,
29% of the outing.
Changeup was 26%,
sinker 10%,
and then even through the curveball, I believe, three or four times.
So, yeah, that, that's something, that was something else.
I mean, again, he was kind of all over the place here,
but he was very efficient and a lot of his success came from changing the speed
between the fastball and the changeup.
His only blemish was a solo home run by Luis Arise there in the seventh inning.
That really wasn't even a bad pitch.
It's just one of those tip of the caps to a rise for hitting it.
Kelly probably could have gone the full game, it felt like.
Diamondbacks got seven innings out of Kelly.
He only allowed four hits, one earn run, zero walks, four strikeouts.
I know it's probably, I've talked about it.
Noah is new to this, but it takes a lot of seawater and resources to turn on the circle K strikeout meter.
I don't really typically like to do that with four, but we got to do it anyway.
So fire that bad boy up, kick on the generator, four, strikeout.
right now is bang bang uh i watched that golf video today where that guy beat the crap out of
the other drunk guy and i've been saying bang all day so forgive me you might have the glock and
spiel me every time i say bang today because that's going to be in my vernacular but uh and now i said
vernacular piece of yoshi was also getting me for eclectic and he's saying i'm using fancy words i don't
know it's i feel like i have to step up my game on this podcast for the lack of offense tonight i have
to feel like I have to do something here.
But Merrill Kelly deserved the win tonight.
Didn't get it, obviously.
Didn't get any run support from this Diamondbacks team.
But he continues to be very good against the National League West,
the N-Hell West, if you will, the drunken orgy of violence.
In six starts versus NOS teams, Kelly now has a 2.61 ERA.
However, he has a three-and-two record in those six starts.
So not necessarily a fair reflection of Kelly's.
But I'm just amazed by what Merrill can do on any given night.
And it's the reason why he continues to be the most consistent pitcher in the starting rotation for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
I guess not named Ryan Nelson as of late.
But I don't know.
I mean, Kelly, he was so efficient that he was removed, I believe, at 77 pitches is where his pitch count was at.
And I honestly, with the way that the Diamondbacks bullpen has been pitching as of late, probably would have just left to be.
in there for for another inning um but hey uh i also understand it because you got to go to john
curtis who after merrill kelly proceeded to not walk a single batter in seven innings immediately
through six balls in a row he walks zander bogarts and i know everybody else was ready for me
to bust out the bullpen meme as was i i was ready to bust out the bullpen meme but somehow
uh curtis got it back on track he gives him one inning walked one struck out one uh
fairly, fairly innocent inning there.
But still just a night where the Diamondbacks offense had two home runs robbed of them from the Padres.
It's a really crushing loss.
It feels like once again, the Diamondbacks find new and creative ways to hurt us as fans,
find new ways for us to not feel good about watching baseball.
But yeah, this is, this wasn't a great one.
let's see here uh shan says if only jackson merrill were an inch or two shorter uh if only sean
if only uh and yeah that that that's very much the case uh i i don't know sean also says i seriously
hate how much i love this damn team and i think that's the reason why this situation is complicated
i believe i heard um chris gergiola on the radio broadcast say if this team is buyers at the trade
deadline, fine, I understand it, I get it. If there's sellers at the trade deadline, fine,
I understand it, I get it. In fact, you would have a harder time convincing me at this point of this
team being buyers than sellers, but with the way that Merrill Kelly is pitching and has started to
pitch and continues to pitch against the NL West, the way that Zach Gallen has pitched in his last two
outings, which we are going to go over here shortly, you can't help but feel, you know, like there is
just some adjustments
to the bullpen that are needed
but since we last saw each other
since I last did this show
we have new news
Shelby Miller has been placed
on the 15 day IL
with right forearm
discomfort
tightness
whatever whatever
terrible words that you say
about a pitcher before it leads
to something else 11
pitchers on the IL this year
11. And not only that, not only that, but of the 11, I believe nine have season ending surgeries
that have either been done or our plan that will cause them to not only miss the rest of the
year, but to miss significant time next year. I don't know, been through worse, I guess, right?
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I've been down before. Yeah. I've been hurt before. Back in my day,
we used to have 13 pitchers on the IL. Spoken like a true Tigers fan. What I will say, though, is that it comes
to a point that I really can't imagine how difficult it is to keep believing that you can add
pieces to this team and continue to make this team competitive.
You feels like even if you do that, even if you go out there and add pieces to this team,
are those pieces going to get injured too?
I don't know.
I don't know the answer to this anymore.
I know I'm broken as many of you are.
And it's hard to continue to be positive and keep the face.
I know we have one guy that loves to come in here and call me a shill.
And yeah, to an extent, I am a shill for Tori.
I won't lie about that.
I love the man.
He's a great dude.
But I'm also shill for this team, even though that's not in my job responsibilities, nor are they paying me in any way to do so.
It's because I still believe in the talent of this team.
I believe in the offense.
I believe in the position players.
And God damn it, I believe in Zach Gallin and Merrill Kelly up there at the top.
I even believe in Brandon Fott.
Edward Rodriguez,
still, Ryan Nelson,
I totally believe in
more than most things in life.
I believe in Ryan Nelson
more than I believe in myself.
But what I will
say is that I can understand
how Mike Hazen and his front office
also continue to believe in this team
and also continue to be impressed
by the fact that there are guys
that have stepped up like Nellie
in the absence of other guys.
Jake McCarthy was a little strong.
He's cooled off a bit,
but still McCarthy,
has had his attitude in the right place after yelling about the S word on the broadcast.
And again, it's just about having fight.
It's about having fight left in you.
And we've seen this team over the course of this week.
I feel like yesterday they showed a tremendous amount of fight in the game one victory.
I felt like defensively this team was solid tonight.
And I think that Merrill Kelly once again showed a tremendous amount of fight Sunday.
We didn't really see much fight from this team.
So I feel like it varies from one series, one.
game to another how much fight we actually see out of a team that is on the brink of having their
season kind of careen off the cliff and go into the into the river here with the trade deadline
approaching at the end of the month. Tonight's loss is another difficult loss. It's definitely
difficult considering how well Merrill Kelly pitched and even to his credit how well John Curtis
pitched. But of course tonight we got to give credit where credit is due. Merrill Kelly is our
Kingsnake in tonight's game.
Seven innings pitched.
They're strong outing here from Merrill.
One earned run allowed.
No walks, four strikeouts.
And again, Merrill the mainstay, never sexy.
Sometimes it's sexy.
Most of the time it's not sexy.
But he gets the job done.
And yeah, he's definitely an excellent starting pitcher to have in your rotation.
He could end up being so incredibly valuable at the trade.
deadline that the diamondbacks find it hard to resist potentially a trade package for Merrill Kelly.
And I know that they are going to be offered a King's ransom for him.
I really still have this hope in my heart that they can work out a deal if they do decide to trade
Merrill to bring him back as a free agent at the end of the season.
And I don't think that I feel like Merrill's the kind of guy that would do that for the
diamondbacks.
I don't know.
I just feel like he's the kind of guy that loves.
the Valley wants to be a part of this team, wants to be part of this franchise long term.
And, you know, he could potentially be okay with the idea of going to another team,
trying to make a run there, doing what he can to help someone else win,
but then still coming back to the Valley at the end of the year.
I don't know.
But he is my goat.
He is my ace.
And he continues to be one of the best starting pitchers in Diamondbacks history.
He ranks third all time and wins.
and for good reason.
Merrill just quietly has always gotten a job done for this team and continues to do so.
But we have the reasons why they lost, which is the offense.
We have more to talk about the offense on the other side of this break.
So don't you guys go anywhere.
We thank you for being here and we appreciate your time.
We are going to take a quick break.
And on the other side, we'll chat about that.
Don't you go anywhere?
You're watching the PHNX Diamond Back Show.
Well, tonight is a fine night for pure edibles.
Let me tell you, because it can help elevate your mood.
with some of their delicious candies and kind of get over a loss like this,
especially one to nothing heartbreaking loss.
You felt like the Diamondbacks were this close to turning things around.
Pure Edibles was founded right here in Arizona.
Actually, they were created in Flagstaff, Arizona, at Noble Herb Dispensory,
and now they are made right here in Phoenix.
They offer a wide variety of candies, not just gummies,
and their gummies aren't covered in sugar.
Their gummies are pure, like their name says,
but they offer gummies, kicks, which are their version of Starbursts,
which are soft candies like carmels and then also hard candies.
So check out the wide variety of doses and effects that they have to offer.
They offer gummies for sleep support as well as candy with uplifting effects.
Again, they can help you get over a game like this.
Pure gummies are designed to be ripped or bit and half making them easily shareable.
And their effects are clearly listed on each tin so you know exactly what you're getting into.
Go find yourself some pure edible products from one of over 130 dispensaries across Arizona right now.
Well, it's pretty late.
They might be close right now.
So maybe you have to wait until tomorrow.
But what you can also do tomorrow is contact all pro-shade concepts to have them help you extend your outdoor living space.
It was disgustingly hot today.
I don't even know if all pro-shade concepts can help on a day where it's 116 degrees.
At least that's what I thought until I realized that they have rolled down patio shades that can turn your patio into essentially another room of your house.
They can keep your patio 20 degrees cooler and block out 95% of those harmful UV rays.
So check out everything they have to offer.
They have amazing additions to your backyard, even any kind of outdoor living space, and they can help make it beautiful and make it enjoyable.
Extend your living space with a custom fit awning.
They have hundreds of designs to choose from and colors that can match any home and can work with any HOA to make sure that they are HOA compliant.
Give them a call at 623-2041476 or visit all pro-shadeconcepts.com now to schedule your free estimate.
Well, not a lot of offense in this one.
In fact, only three hits from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Yet somehow, somehow they had bases loaded and still swandered that opportunity away.
The D-backs only managed to get two hits total off of Padres starter Nick Bavetta,
who has been really good this year for the Padres to be fair.
But still a guy that the Diamondbacks felt like they were breaking through on a couple of times,
but never managed to get that big hit.
They did have three walks against him, so they had some base runners.
They did get some guys and runners in scoring position.
They did load the bases against Povetta in the fourth inning.
Carol singled in that inning to lead off.
Marte walked, and then Pardomo advanced the runners, Josh Naylor, gets intentionally walked.
He gets on base to load the bases.
I send out the tweet that says this mother effing plane is full of mother effing snakes.
Diamondbacks inevitably don't do anything with that opportunity.
And then someone comes in and yells at me for,
tweeting that and blames me for the Diamondbacks not scoring in that situation. Instead of
blaming Gino and Lordus for their terrible at bats that both resulted, I believe, in strikeouts
with the bases loaded there. So again, unproductive day. A weird strike zone being called
all day long. Home plate umpire Brian Walsh was not very accurate and it was causing some problems.
In fact, it's funny because when you have a game like this that ends in a
one-nothing game and you have a home plate umpire calling an erratic strike zone i don't know like
maybe that is the reason why we ended up with a pitcher's duel i don't really know it did my end up
uh with podre's manager mike schilt uh being ejected in the sixth inning during a catal martay
at bat that resulted in a walk uh and it did have uh the the the hair on the back of troy lobelo's
neck up at one point for sure um so yeah there was some
I don't know. There was some something going on with him all night long. Really bad calls. Calls in the strike zone being called balls, balls outside of strike zone being called strikes. I don't really know. And I can only imagine how hard it is as a batter to get, you know, on some sort of anything going on in a strike zone where you have no idea what's going to be called. Jake McCarthy did have a hell of an at bat in the seventh inning. It was like an 11 pitch walk.
that resulted him getting on base.
But again, Diamondbacks did not have a lot of opportunities.
Their three hits were by Gino and by Corbin.
Those were both singles.
And then Jose Herrera had a double.
And that's it.
But what could have been?
What could have been the home run robbery in this game?
I have contacted the police.
I've contacted the police both here locally,
the Phoenix Police Department,
and I contacted the San Diego Police Department.
I also got the FBI involved.
And for some reason, everybody just keeps telling me to stop calling them.
I don't get it.
Like, were they not watching this game?
I've never seen a game where two home runs got robbed like this game.
And of course, on a day where the Diamondbacks weren't able to muster up any offense,
it hurts even more.
It makes, it stings significantly more.
Jackson Merrill absolutely robbed Corby and Carroll on one of the most incredible
catches I've seen in the fifth inning.
Corbent, that ball was gone
and Jackson Merrill jumped what
seemed like a mile high to catch it.
And then Fernando Tatis Jr.
just casually seemed like he was eight feet tall,
robbing Josh Naylor of a home run
in the eighth inning where it didn't even feel like
he had to jump very high to jump up and catch it.
That one also very much looked on replay
like it was going to be out.
Who says what did the police say, Derek?
Again, they said, I don't know,
they told me something about filing false police reports
and that like,
contacting them was using up phone lines and resources or some crap.
I don't know.
I wasn't really listening.
Once I could tell that the lady wasn't going to be helpful,
I was like,
screw you,
I'm going to call the FBI now.
And then the FBI,
they were even angrier at me for calling them.
But I felt like it was reasonable.
I felt like I had a reasonable grievance.
You know,
it bothered me more is that they wouldn't even look into it.
Yeah.
I mean, like,
come on.
The responses they gave were just so dismissive.
Just fire up a TV.
and watch it just to see
the actual robbery that occurred
in this game. And I mean, again, this is the country.
This is what America's turning into.
We're just turning a blind eye to this stuff happening
in broad daylight in front of thousands
of people. I don't get it. I don't get it. The whole
Padre's team needs to be thrown in jail, quite frankly.
I wouldn't be against that. Criminals live on
TV? I mean, seriously. Just turn
it on. It was crazy.
Jay, J.J.
Cuddy says Tatis kissed his patch on his glove
and I wanted to die. I did too.
I did too.
Yeah, John Freeman.
They all said get lost.
Basically, that is what happened.
They did all say get lost.
But the dimebacks also had some good defense tonight behind Merrill Kelly.
That's why this game effectively ended in a one-nothing score.
Solid defense all the way around.
Naylor made a great play to get Trenton Brooks in the third inning on an unassisted out there.
And then Perdomo also robbed Trenton Brooks there in the sixth inning of a hit with a pretty nice leaping catch.
Marte also turned a double play in the fourth inning after Tateas got on with a lead off single.
It felt like every time the Padres kind of got something cooking offensively, the Diamondbacks were able to snuff it out.
So again, good defense tonight from both teams.
There was a huge pickoff of Bryce Johnson in the seventh inning.
I almost forgot about that.
Merrill Kelly and Josh Naylor combined for the pickoff.
It was originally ruled that he was safe.
But then Tori challenged the call and the call was overturned.
overall the big story tonight offensively for the Diamondbacks is three hits three hits I have a little
section that's called notable performances it's it says none that's what my notes say it says
notable performances none there are none what do I have to talk about here uh the robberies the
home run robberies the home runs that almost were I guess I could talk about that but I mean again
this was just one of those nights where you got three hits Corbin gino and Jose Herrera that's it
it felt like the Diamondbacks had things cooking very good
at bats very long at bats at times but still with runners in scoring position again in that
situation where they had bases loaded against pavetta the diamond back just squandered that opportunity
they did not do a good job of productive at bats in some way and again i say this i've said this
in the past i'll say it now and i'll say it again in the future i know i'm a pudgy guy sitting
here in a very comfortable seat far away from the baseball field making accusations about how easy it is to
lift a ball to left field to score a runner from third base. However, I do feel like if there were guys
that would be able to do that, it would be Gino and Lourdes. And it was unfortunate that those two
at bats were so unproductive. Obviously, Lourdes was different with having two outs. But again,
it's all of these close plays. This is one of those games where things didn't really go the
Diamondbacks way and the difference maker was a single Luis Arise home run. So this is just, I,
I feel like this is a game where you just tip your cap to the other team.
You say good game.
You slightly outplayed us and you end up with the victory.
It's unfortunate, but really at the end of the day,
the Padres flashed some amazing defense tonight to rob the Diamondbacks hitters
of the few opportunities that they had.
And those home runs were both absolutely going to be home runs.
So I don't know.
Candace is suggesting a mute session,
but I don't know if I trust Noah to really do that
and not have me say a bunch of curse words on the show because, you know, again, that's probably
what would happen.
But we do have some super chats, including one from my dear, dear Candice.
She says, lucky I love you guys.
I did not want to listen in on this horrible loss.
Trust me, Candice, I'm not a fan of the host of this show.
So if I wasn't like obligated, contractually obligated to be here talking about this game, I wouldn't
be.
In fact, this team has upset me so much that I booked a flight to an island as far.
away. Like I'm going almost as far away as I humanly can from the Arizona Diamondbacks
geographically within still being in the United States. So if that answers your question or
makes you relate to me in any way, then hopefully a job well done. Benjamin Hunley says that was
an atrocious at bat by Cattel. Yeah, I mean, there were a couple of atrocious at bats overall.
Cattel did have one. This team had atrocious at bats tonight. I, I,
Wouldn't you say that?
Like overall, I felt like, I mean, we did see a couple of good at bats.
I brought up, highlighted the Jaquant.
Randall Gritchick kind of battled there in the ninth inning unsuccessfully,
but I just, I don't know.
I didn't really see this team putting together, you know,
the kind of at bat you need to put together in a close ball game.
And that is something that this team has fallen very far away from,
the ability to manufacture runs in a close game,
the ability, especially the base is loaded,
to bring in one of those runners in scoring,
position. Diamondbacks were 0 for
8 with runners in scoring position tonight.
That's inexcusable. It's actually kind of
ridiculous. Mathematically, I'm
sure some people don't even understand how that's
possible with only getting three hits.
But yes, with only getting three hits, the
Diamondbacks were still 0 for 8 with
runners in scoring position.
And yeah, I
don't know. A piece of Yoshi,
thank you for your super chat. He said, I blame
home run thief being in San
Francisco.
Is that the home run thief guy?
The guy that's our home run thief?
Must be.
That's all I can think of.
I'm not a fan.
I'm not a fan.
Let me tell you.
And I'm sure it has something to do with him.
I'm going to blame everything bad that happens after that point on him the rest of the season.
That's just the way that that goes.
I'm also blaming Shane and his stupid baby.
And what's funny is the baby is here in the office.
It's pinned to Shane's wall.
and I have made
not, I guess, not threats.
Threats probably wouldn't be the right way.
I've just said that something terrible
is going to befall that baby.
I said that I'm,
like somebody is going to have to stop that baby,
and I feel like I'm the person that needs to stop that baby.
Diamondbacks continue to not be very good
since Shane brought that baby to Chase Field
and held it up and screamed at Randall Gritcher.
I think Randall Gritchie hasn't had a hit since Shane yelled.
Randall look at the baby.
It's not great.
It's not great.
All right. Well, I'll tell you that what's also not great is talking about the numbers from this game and also updating you guys on the wild card standings.

details. All right. Well, no, I'll tell you this much. I don't want to take a look at these numbers,
but I made you do the graphics. So let's go ahead and take a look at these visible numbers from
tonight's game, at least presented by our good friends at Desert Financial. It always keeps our
numbers straight. But Diamondbacks lose this one by a score of zero to one. Diamondbacks get outhit
three to four by the Padres. Sandigo Padres did not have a single runner in scoring position tonight.
that is wild that is wild uh zero for zero with runners in scoring position meanwhile the diamondbacks
with their three hits oh for eight with runners in scoring position they only had one extra base hit
which was that double by herrera meanwhile the padre's one extra base hit significantly more
important it was a solo home run by louisa rise expected batting average here one ninety five for
the diamond backs 249 for the podres and that's it that's it in this game not a lot of
offense. This game
honestly also entirely too long.
Kind of upset me with how long
it was considering that only one run was scored.
I know it wasn't that long, but it still felt like it should have been shorter than this.
As should most baseball games where only one run is scored.
But of course, Elise brings up here in the chat that the Giants just won
on a walk off inside the park home run.
And then she proceeded to say, I hate baseball.
which we all know isn't true.
We know that that is not correct about you, Elise.
No, you might not know this.
Elise is actually Diamondback to GM, Mike Hazen's burner account.
Oh.
He very creatively went with Elise.
He even has a stand-in actress that he hired to come to like our events every once in
and while and portray her to be Elise.
But that's where it really, that's where it breaks down.
When you start questioning or in person, things start not to match up.
but Lee's saying I hate baseball once again trying to get us trying to well actually you know what that is something I bet Mike Hazen would say right now I bet Mike Hazen would say I hate baseball because he's sick of watching this team have injuries and struggle but also still do well enough to not give up on him but then he's also getting a lot of phone calls right now which are probably troublesome to him causing him a lot of anxiety probably a lot of loss of sleep so yes Elise I get it that you hate baseball I also hate the fact that the Giants won that
Game two, Diamondbacks need the Giants and the Padres to lose as much as possible, as well as
every other team in the wildcard race.
We have your update on the drunken orgy of violence, aka the N hell west here, and here is
where we stand.
Is this pre-Giants win or what is this?
This is post-Giants win.
So this is the Giants win is factored in here.
Well, here you go, folks.
Diamondbacks sit currently at 10 and a half games back in the division, which,
actually doesn't seem as much as it should be.
It seems like it should be more.
But the worst part here is the five and a half back in the wild card.
That really hurts the Diamondbacks.
Now we are moving beyond that five game mark as far as being back in the wildcard hunt.
The Marlins keep winning games and they keep inching closer and closer.
And I think if the Diamondbacks get to a point where they get yet another team in between them and the wildcard pack,
that it's over.
It's so over that you could say it's joking.
in fact. But Diamondbacks right now, 45 and 47, sit 10 and a half back in the division,
five and a half back in the wildcard. Padres after tonight's win are 49 and 42. They are six
games back in the division, one game back in the wild card. Giants currently hold a wildcard spot.
I believe they hold a final wildcard spot. They are 51 and 42 and they are five games back in
the division. Meanwhile, the Dodgers, 56 and 37 and really can't do much wrong. But Bees is here in the
chat so everything is good now and uh i'm i'm i'm glad he's here i need bees to be uh in the diamondbacks
maybe front office because i feel like you bring the good vibes to this team they need all the good
vibes they can get with the way things are going uh things are kind of a disaster right now for this
team i'm i i said it on monday's episode and then they went out and and had a great showing against
the podres and made me feel a little bit like i was eating my words and i guess that's kind of
the problem here with this team.
After I kind of declared their season to be over, one game later, I felt like maybe I was,
maybe I was rushing that, you know, but this is the, this is where they sit as they dwindle
kind of in mediocrity.
They sit here at this point, two games below 500, important series here against the Padres.
But, you know, again, you could say that literally about every single baseball game,
the Diamondbacks have on their schedule before the All-Star break and even after it, right?
So I don't know what the answer is.
I don't know what the direction that the Diamondbacks are leaning.
And I really can see a situation where they kind of do maybe something similar to what the Tigers did last year.
And I'm glad you're here to discuss this being an expert on this team because I brought this up before.
And I mean, I could see the Diamondbacks essentially being sellers that.
improve by maybe moving some pieces, even though what they get in return might not be seen as
some home run acquisition, right?
Like there's a lot of starting pitchers in baseball that have a lower ERA than guys like
Zach Gallin and Brandon fought right now.
So it's not to say you're going to bring in some impressive arm,
but the Diamondbacks not only need to do that for, I guess, to, I guess, take advantage of
these guys that have expiring contracts at the end of the year.
but they also are in a big dilemma with all of those injuries about what their starting rotation is going to look like at the beginning of next year if they do lose that gown and Merrill Kelly both to free agency after the season.
So I guess what was the thought process as a fan when the Tigers did what they did and sold off, but then all of a sudden started winning baseball games.
Well, it definitely, it seemed like they were all just buying in at that specific moment, not that they weren't.
earlier in the season, but it really just felt like the bat started clicking a lot.
And then they get rid of Flaherty.
He goes to L.A.
And we get a couple of nice prospects, not prospects, but like Trace Weenie and then another
like a catching prospect, I think.
Yeah.
And Tray Sweeney actually turned out to be a very helpful bat for us, which we needed at the time.
And then it comes back around and we're winning games.
And now everything's like, okay, this team.
actually kind of has the juice.
So let's start bringing some guys up, maybe putting some guys back down, you know,
just the typical baseball stuff.
But after all that too, I mean, the next season comes around and all of a sudden
the tigers are like, oh, let's just get Jack Flaherty back here again.
We would basically just pawn them off to L.A.
Yeah.
For him to get a ring and then just sign him back the next season.
So you could easily maybe if you got some extra bats to get rid of,
Right. Get that, get a couple of arms.
Well, and Merrill Kelly, again, that's the guy that I think that they could do that Jack Flaherty move.
Yeah.
He would come back after the end of the year.
But he could potentially go off and really be a difference maker for another team as well.
And again, that's not the worst thing for the player, right?
Like you said, Jack goes off and gets his ring.
He gets that shine, but then he can come back.
And now the Tigers are one of the best teams of baseball this year, right?
So it was a quick turnaround from being sellers at the trade deadline last year to now this point.
It helps that you have one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.
for sure. However, you know, again, Zach Gallen, not to say that Zach Gallen could really, that I believe he could be one of the best pitchers in baseball, but I do feel like Zach Gallin is still elite. And I think that Gallin has a lot of reasons to come back here to Arizona. And I think it's a situation where it could be beneficial for Gallin. It could be beneficial for the Diamondbacks. And at the end of the day, by 2027, everybody kind of won in that situation. But Gallin being good now,
before the trade deadline kind of complicates things for the Diamondbacks of Mike Hazen.
And we were going to talk about that on the other side of this break.
Of course, don't you go anywhere.
You're watching the PH&X Diamondback show.

First of all, chicken and pickle isn't just a pickleball court.
It is a pickleball city.

you just even if you're not into pickleball. Just go out there. It's a great place for you to hang with
your fam. They got outdoor games. They got indoor seating. They always have sporting events on.
Of course, they have tons of room for you and your group events, for outings, for family coming into

courts. And they are hosting our pickleball tournament this year. Again, July,
26 at 10 a.m. $35 for individuals, $70 for a team. And we are excited to put together this with our friends over at Chicken Pickle. Of course, diehards of all skill levels from beginners to everyday pickleball players. And if you've never played pickleball, it is the easiest game I've ever played in my entire life to learn. Though I will say, I feel like it's one of those games where they incorporated unnecessary rules just to make it a bit more complicated. Yeah, like the box.
Keep your feet out of the kitchen and all that kind of stuff, right?

us have some fun. Help us raise
some money and help us give back
to the community.
The big question on everybody's mind
after seeing him in game one.
And again, you got the one two punch here
of Zach Gallen and Merrill Kelly. But is Zach Gallen
back? Is he in fact back? He seems
to be back. I don't know exactly
what is causing.
Zach Gallen to be back. Of course, we did have that wonderful conversation with James McMahon.
McCann, McMahon would be, you know, I'd go crazy if his name was James McBan.
James McCann, where he kind of told Zach that he is a good pitcher and that he hated facing him as a hitter.
And it seems like in the two starts since working with McCann, that Zach Gallen has gotten very much back on track.
yesterday he had his second straight quality start zero earn run,
six innings pitch, five hits allowed, one walk, nine strikeouts.
Now in his two last outings, Zach Gallen has pitched 13 innings.
He's only allowed one earn run.
He has a 0.69 ERA.
Nice.
He has 19 strikeouts and he has one walk.
Zach Gallen is in fact back or at least maybe temporarily.
I don't know.
On one hand, Gallen tends to pitch in big games when.
the Diamondbacks kind of need him the most, especially when it's against a big opponent.
And he definitely did that against the Padres.
And you just really never know.
Unless it's Zach Gallen pitching against a crappy team at home, you really don't have much of a measurement for how good Zach is currently pitching.
But the big question that everybody is asking, everybody is wondering is could Zach Gallen be traded at the trade deadline?
Diamondbacks have, you know, the candidates that we've talked about.
Gallin and Merrill Kelly is pitchers.
They also now have Shelby Miller, who is a free agent after this year.
And the Diamondbacks have a big decision on what to do with him in regards to this.
If he does end up missing significant time and misses the rest of the season,
also has to have season-ending surgery.
Then the Diamondbacks have to figure out if they're going to bring him back.
Jalen Beaks, also on an expiring contract.
Those are your four pitchers.
Then you have Josh Naylor and Gino Swares.
Now, from what I've heard, it feels like Josh Naylor,
is pretty much the leading candidate right now
for the Diamondbacks to trade.
I don't know who they would have play first base.
I don't know with Tristan English being called up.
If he would go over there and play first base,
I don't know if Pavin Smith would take over those duties.
I have heard rumors that Gino Svarez could potentially switch from third base over to first,
allowing for perhaps Jordan Lawler to play third base,
perhaps Blaise Alexander to play third base.
So if the Diamondbacks do make a move there, that could be that.
I feel like Gino Suarez also could be very valuable at the trade deadline.
But again, he's a guy that isn't necessarily a piece I want to see the Diamondbacks partways with.
You talk about guys that are free agents here.
I feel like Merrill Kelly and Gino Suarez are the guys that I want this team to bring back the most
or at least try to go after and make a competitive offer for.
When it comes to Zach Gowan, him being good right now really does cause problems for the front office.
caused some headaches for Mike Hazen because what do you do now with Zach Gallen? Overall, my
sentiment has been that Zach Gallen could be very valuable at the trade deadline because,
one, he did for a period of time there have the highest ERA of any qualified starter. He doesn't
any longer. He's lowered that. He doesn't even have the highest ERA on his team any longer. Both
Brandon Fott and Eduardo Rodriguez have higher ERAs currently than Zek Gallen. There is the fact that
deep down inside, I knew, you guys know, Mike Hazen,
knows, other teams still believe in
Zach Gallen. They don't think that this
bad season is who he is as a pitcher.
I believe at least
again, my
fictional number I threw out there was,
I believe there's at least 10 teams
in baseball right now that feel like if
Zach Gallin was pitching for them,
he would be a completely different pitcher
than who he is right now, pitching for the DEVX.
And he's kind of
proven that he is better than that
in his last two starts. And he
does seem to be gaining confidence,
and be pitching better as of late.
Now, on one hand, it could very much increase his trade value before the deadline,
making it a bit hard to resist trading gallon at the deadline.
At the end of the year, the Diamondbacks have a potential qualifying offer that they could give to Zach Gallen.
And we've talked about with how bad he was at one point that there actually could be feared that he would accept that qualifying offer.
Now in my mind, that's probably the best case scenario for this team with the situation that they are in for next season as far as they're starting pitching is concerned with the injuries that they have to Corbyn Burns to, I mean, Jordan Montgomery won't be a part of this team, but to Corbyn Burns, if you have both Merrill and Gallen leaving on, you know, on free agency deals, you're really just down to Brandon Fott, E. Rod, and Ryan Nelson without other.
options in the minor league system for you to really lean on that once we're there like like
of course of Tommy Henry of Blake Walsden right so the dimebacks are very limited on options next
year bringing back Merrill Kelly and Zach Gallen could help them significantly gallon coming back on a
one year deal based on a qualifying offer could allow him to have that bounce back season and at
2027 comes along the at post 2026 season his free agency options look much better he
could get that big contract he's seeking and in the end everybody kind of works out well for
everybody right like it feels like that yeah it could be it now uh zo a z in the chat says hear me out
trade guriel he's been so inconsistent and non-existent that we even forget he's around again
you're not wrong about that but there's a factor of value right like lordis guriel does have
value because he's not on an expiring contract. So if you trade guerriel at the trade deadline,
then that's pretty much what his value is to another team. He hasn't had a strong offensive
year. His defense hasn't been super strong. I mean, he's had some good catches and good plays
out there recently, but you're right. But it is about value, right? Like, Gino, for instance,
has an inflated value due to his home runs and his RBI this year, right? Plus, I have my beard on the
line. So if a team wants to come over and trade for him, I wouldn't be opposed to that. No, I'm joking. I would be very opposed to that. I love Gino. And I think obviously Suarez is a big reason why the
Diamondbacks have one of the top five offenses in baseball. Without him, things look pretty bleak for this team
offensively. And I can't, can't really imagine that. I don't want to imagine that. I really do feel like if you start
trading guys like Josh Naylor and Gino that that might truly be the white flag, maybe even more so than trading a pitcher.
Right, which sounds crazy because the Diamondbacks need all the arms they can get.
It just feels like you could potentially trade for a pitcher and get some pitching in return, upgrade your pitching for a starting pitcher that's going to have years of control left that is going to be here to start the 2026 season.
At some point, you've got to start looking beyond just this year as far as this trade deadline is concerned.
Yes, sir.
And I feel like it would be easier to convince a pitcher that you trade.
to come back and free agency this following season rather than good at that.
I agree completely, especially a guy like Gino, right?
Oh, yeah.
Josh Naylor's always kind of felt a bit like a rental, but Gino has really just become
a bit of the heart and soul of the clubhouse along with Geraldo Pardomo.
So, I mean, without Gino there, I feel like it's a big, it's a big loss.
And it goes beyond his stats and what he offers the offense.
I think it goes into what he means to the clubhouse.
Sean says,
I'm still not happy that you're reneging on your amendment to the agreement.
All I said is,
is that it has to be a Diamondbacks player.
That's all I said.
Candice says,
no,
if you get traded,
you automatically have to dye your beard,
Derek.
No,
that's not the case either,
Candice.
And I,
I think you know that.
I think you know,
essentially,
who has ultimate veto power here at the end of the day.
And it's me when it comes to my beard.
But anyway,
I really don't know if,
gallon's value is high enough based on these two starts for trades to start coming in that
completely blow my Kaysen away. But I do feel like it makes things more complicated. And if you add
in one or two more good starts from gallon before the trade deadline comes around, it's hard for
that phone not to be reading off the hook for my case in regards to offers for Zach Gallen. Now,
there is the fact that Gallen is a Boris client. We've talked about this before. So the idea that he is
going to accept a qualifying offer to come back for one season is is not a guarantee.
You know, it, it's almost like Gallen would have to continue to be very bad for the rest of
the year for that to happen. If he figures things out and kind of goes in the, in the opposite
direction and puts together a nice season from this point on, I'm pretty sure the teams will
believe in him enough to give him a significant deal that would lower him away from Arizona at
at the end of the season.
So piece of Yoshi just straight up asks buying and selling.
Yeah, that's it.
I mean, it kind of has to be that.
I don't know how.
I feel like, again, this is just like me saying earlier,
like hit the ball, do something more productive with the bat
while I'm sitting here with my tubby belly sticking out on this comfortable chair.
Now, I don't know how you can be buying and selling,
but I think there is a route there.
And again, the value in the players of the Diamondbacks get back.
in return might be an unproven starter, maybe somebody in the bullpen, but mostly years of
control that go beyond this season, right? Like at least a pitcher in return that can help you fill
out your starting rotation for 2026 and at least get you through the first half until the,
until Corbyn Burns returns. Not to mention, even with Corbyn Burns returning, you still
essentially have an open spot in your starting rotation that you have to fill. Now, the Diamondbacks
can fill that in a number of ways, including bringing Merrill Kelly back at the end of the year,
right? But bringing back Zach Gallen and Merrill Kelly sure would be helpful to fill that void
for the first half of next year. And again, I don't know how likely it is that Zach Gallen would
accept a qualifying offer. But, you know, I just feel like at this point with how 2026 is structured,
with the injuries that it's it's the diamond back's really best case scenario right i don't know
who they would get during this particular free agency off season that could help them out i mean
they they they kind of need uh an arm long term so adding another arm through free agency wouldn't
be the worst thing we've seen how that's gone though so far the last two years hasn't really
worked out to go out there and spend a lot of money in free agency and bring in that big arm for this
team but um i know we have a couple of minutes left here and i know we're supposed to
normally reserved free ads for Friday.
So this is probably going to make Max lose his mind.
But if you are interested, if you are, if you are a real sicko, the Arizona Diamondbacks
are right now offering their dbacks.tv package for the rest of the year for 2799.
I don't know if that's an indication of the white flag being waived.
What is it usually?
It's, well, okay, so they, it's half of a year.
So usually at this point, it's like,
half of what they usually charge.
I believe they charge $100 for a full year.
I think at this point it would be something like $55,
but they are charging half of that.
So that's why they are currently offering $27.99 for the rest of the season.
Piece of Yoshi says it's an all-star package.
So yeah, it's based on the all-stars.
Now, again, I don't know if enticing you with a low price
is enough to make you watch this team for the rest of the year.
if you are here tonight and you're watching this podcast at 10.30 on a on a Tuesday.
Yeah.
After a one to nothing loss, I hate to tell this to you.
I hate to break it to you.
You're a baseball sicko.
Like you're a true sicko.
Like certifiable should be locked up just like the Padres for robbing the diamondbacks of their home runs tonight.
So if you don't already have dbacks.tv and you don't currently legally watch games on a legal method.
that's legal, then spend the 2799.
Maybe I'll give away, maybe I'll buy somebody,
Dbacks.tv. It doesn't last very long. This is only until July 13th.
So it won't be here when I get back from Puerto Rico.
Just say it's a limited time offer. But definitely go out there and get yourself
the Dbacks.tv. I still hate the way that this whole subscription thing works in life,
especially in sports. The blackout rules, people in Las Vegas,
not being able to watch stuff.
It was outrageous.
I was at Circa.
Again, no free ads, but I was at Circa,
and their programming director
in their big sports book
was telling me about how often
they go to put on a game
and blacked out for them
because they are close to California teams
and they're close to Arizona.
And so if there's certain,
I don't know, certain restrictions,
they are not allowed to even show it
in their sports book despite the fact that they play way more.
They pay way more than 20,
2799 to have that package.
And it's insane to me that that's still a thing in 2025.
I know.
It's so silly.
The amount of times I saw I'm from Michigan originally and I had ESPN Plus and I'm like,
oh, yeah, you know, cool.
I'll get to watch Red Wings games.
Yeah.
Oh, no.
You live in Michigan and you want to watch the Red Wings game?
No, we're not going to allow that.
What do you think?
We were just going to let you watch the team of the town you live in?
there while you're in the city?
No, that's crazy.
Instead, how about you watch like the San Jose
Sharks play the Anaheim ducks?
I don't want to watch them.
I want to watch my team.
It makes me sick. Yeah, no, for real.
But yeah, it's a great deal.
It's like Jessica out there.
I mean, again, the Diamondbacks make it easy
to access this team
and cheaper than any other
any other team in baseball.
They do a fine job of that.
Luckily now we have the whole stadium issue
settled and I'm sure the diamond backs are going to continue to make sure that they offer
some of the best you know deals in all the baseball this absolutely is one of those even though
I'm sure we're still going to have to put up with with blackout stuff um let's see uh Sean
asked Derek did you see the how do you say his last name Malawatch Malawatch
right a Malawatch quote that surfaced after we drafted him you can't break the
broken you can't break the broken yeah well
You really can't.
Well, you can't.
You can't break the broken.
And we are definitely broken here.
But, yeah, as Arizona sports fans, we've been broken.
We've broken by this team and every franchise in the state.
But, oh, and B says, Derek, AZ bars aren't any better in that respect.
Well, yeah, they just choose not to turn on the games.
They're just terrible.
It's horrible.
I don't get it.
We're going to put on bar rescue.
I'm like, there's Arizona sports games on right now.
Can we please?
Get it on.
Yeah.
But we appreciate you guys for your time.
You are sickos if you're here.
I hate to remind you and tell you that.

Behave yourselves and remember kids,
baseball is fun,
but it is so much more fun
when your offense can score at least two runs.
