Starting point is 00:00:00 There were 718 dogs in attendance at Chase Field tonight. No, Damon was not one of them, but every single one of those dogs had better eyesight than Las Diaz over at first base. We are talking about a huge, fiery win for the Arizona Diamondbacks, beating the Orioles by a score of 4 to 3. Don't you go anywhere. We're starting in 30 seconds. Welcome in to another edition of the PHNXDbacks podcast right here from Studio K,
Starting point is 00:00:38 presented by our friends at Circle K. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your friend. mayor of PHNX and a man who will also fight the authority. This man next to me, my partner in crime, big night, bark in the park night, bark, bark for this one. It's Damon Dogg, Damon Farrell. Thank you for joining me on a late night, sir. Appreciate you being here.
Starting point is 00:00:59 This is way more civil discourse than what happened at Chase Field. We're going to talk about that chaotic game here. But, of course, first we got to let you know that this show is presented by our friends at 365 in Game Time. Go download the Bet365 app and use our code of PHNX 365. when you sign up, get yourself $150 in bonus bets when you make your first deposit of $10 and bet $5. Starting point is 00:01:29 Yes, it is one of my favorite nights of the year. Bark in the Park Night. Dogs everywhere. I was in heaven because I am a huge dog guy. That's why I got this guy. This is why it's my favorite guy. That's why I'm a Damon dog. But also huge night for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Big win over the Baltimore Orioles winning by a score of four to three. The debacks improved a five and six. But most importantly, a very contentious evening on a night where Merrill Kelly did an excellent job of turning things around after a fairly, you know, fairly bad first inning. He struggled there early on, got it back on track and gave the Diamondbacks an outstanding starting pitching performance, something they haven't received too many of lately. But Merrill Kelly, as he was being pulled out of the game, was tossed. by first base umpire, Laz Diaz, after he made a pretty egregious call
Starting point is 00:02:20 when it comes to a check swing. And I know we could probably just start there because that was the big story of tonight's game. In fact, the only other time Merrill Kelly has been tossed out of a game, he was also tossed after he was removed from the game and leaving. And also the last time he was tossed, he was also tossed in conjunction
Starting point is 00:02:41 with his manager, Tori Lavello, who doesn't play those games when it comes to his players. Here's what Tori had to say about the ejections during tonight's scuffle. Yeah. You know, I don't know what happened. You know, I think the baseball world saw what was going on and what happened with that swing. Empires don't try to miss calls. And that's the gray area that we fight for.
Starting point is 00:03:10 I got to the mound. I asked that everybody still in this game because, you know, I kind of put my head down, walk out of the dugout, and walk up the stairs. And I said, everybody's still in this game. And I told everybody's staying in the game. We need to win this game. I don't want anybody to get thrown out of the game. And then I heard the crowd erupt and something happened between Merrill and Lazz.
Starting point is 00:03:27 And, you know, I'm there to protect the players and protect the team and protect plays. And I just felt like I needed to say a few things that were on my mind. And I go back a long way with Lass. I've known Lazz probably since I don't even know. we were talking about a little bit today. I probably know Laz's close to 30 years. He's an exceptional empire. And, you know, I'm just fighting for space
Starting point is 00:03:52 and fighting for what I think is right, and he's trying to protect what he called. So I respect the heck out of last. He's a great umpire, but it just got away from me there a little bit and say a couple of things you shouldn't say and get whacked yourself. So it's part of my job.
Starting point is 00:04:06 You sure about that? There's going to be something we don't agree with, and that is that Las Diaz, is a, what do you say, tremendous umpire? Are you sure about that? Are you sure about that? I don't know. I don't think so, Tori.
Starting point is 00:04:16 No, but he didn't. I just, this is once again, Tori being too nice and not wanting to go all in on the umpire, admitting that some feelings were involved. He also went on to say later that, you know, obviously the Diamondbacks are frustrated. Yeah. They've been frustrated with the way things of going.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Tori talked about the defense causing him a lot of anxiety. And I think things just came to a head there in the inning when he saw, essentially Merrill Kelly being thrown out of the game for no reason once he was already being removed from the game. Yeah. He did go on to admit that an umpire can throw out a guy whenever. Like he he tried his best not to really upstage the ump here, but let's be honest. What happened here was Merrill Kelly had himself a strong game after a shaky start.
Starting point is 00:05:02 He came out in the first inning. He walked Adley Rushman to start the game, gave up a single to O'Hern, and then he hit Westberg with a pitch. That was with one out, all with one out. So he loads the bases and then gives up a single to Cedric Mullins that drives in two runs. And it just looked like it was once again going to be a long frustrating night for the Diamondbacks, especially when it came to a starting pitching performance. Yeah. And then Merrill Kelly just locked it in. I mean, he locked it in. In fact, the starting pitching has been so bad that the deback starting rotation has allowed at least one run in the first inning of six straight games. And me, an idiot, went ahead and bet on a Nerfie today.
Starting point is 00:05:38 night. That's ridiculous. But I did hit my other bet, so that's fine. Which was? I did the Diamondbacks under nine and a half, or not Diamondbacks, over over, overall score under nine and a half. And then I did Charlie Morton under five and a half strikeouts, which he ended up with four. Charlie Morton, been around for a very long time. I had a feeling he wasn't going to get it done, but he came close. Meanwhile, Merrill Kelly, his counterpart did an excellent job. He had a six pitch third inning, which was incredible. His command was just impeccable after the inning. And I mean, he went from looking like this was going to be as big of a disaster as to start New York early on to giving the Diamond Backs quality start going six innings, giving up three hits, three earned runs, two walks and 4K.
Starting point is 00:06:24 And really, it should have just been the three runs or two runs. But regardless, Merrill Kelly did a great job tonight. Yeah, absolutely. It felt like it was going to be much more the same as we've become accustomed to seeing recently, right, Derek, where, uh, you know, this pitching staff, this vaunted pitching staff that we all put so much stock into fairly similar to last season, uh, you know, has just kind of been crap in the bed to start this year to put it, you know, frankly. And, and, uh, yeah, it looked like more of the same today. Uh, I, you know, I, I, I, I turned on the game and, uh, it was already in the middle of the first sitting. And I was, I was, like, here we go again. Here we go again. We're back. We're back at it. And then as you say, uh, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:04 Merrill just really locked in after that. And, you know, we got, we got that, you know, kind of Merrill Kelly performance, that steady performance that we've become so accustomed to seeing. And, yeah, I mean, now Merrill's pitched three times throughout this season and two starts have been great. Yeah. And one start has been really bad. But, you know, that's still more wins than losses there.
Starting point is 00:07:25 So, you know, hopefully we can get back on the right track and start showing some consistency in this starting rotation where guys are just, you know, going out there and doing their job. properly. And I mean, it's a cascading effect, right? Because some of the starting pitching woes have been attributed to and correctly so to the defense, right? The defense made some some bad plays again tonight. Lordus through a ball to the moon for no reason at all. Dude, he has one of the most inaccurate arms you'll ever see in a major league baseball outfield there. I remember we were talking about just kind of these outfield arms that we have, you know, It's such a discussion within this fan base, and particularly with me, I talk about it all the time. The arms are, they have like great defense out out there, but their arms are terrible. It's putrid. And Lordus is, it's like, yeah, here's the guy who has the strong arm, but he's by far the most inaccurate of all of them.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Like, he threw that ball to New Mexico. Yeah, that would have been to the concourse. It would have hit at least some sort of big dogs. Yeah, yeah. Luckily, no dogs were hurt in the making of this film. Yeah. Do not throw the ball at the dogs, Lordess. But overall, this was one of those nights where, honestly,
Starting point is 00:08:40 like Merrill Kelly has talked about it. He said that in his career, he typically gives up those runs early. And we have more from Merrill here. He didn't really want to discuss the ejection much. Here's what Merrill Kelly had to say about that situation. I saw a little bit of it as I was leaving the dugout. I actually had my pitch come while I was leaving, so I had to turn around and go back and put it back in the dugout.
Starting point is 00:09:00 So I saw a little bit of it. but I honestly didn't even realize that was thrown out until I got back to the dug out and ban. He came and grabbed me and then told me that he threw me out. He must have done it when I turned to walk off the field. And yeah, I mean, again, he basically said, you saw what happened out there, and I think a lot of us did see what happened.
Starting point is 00:09:23 And that thing that happened was right before Merrill Kelly was tossed from this game, removed from this game first by Tori and then tossed by first base. umpire las there uh i don't want to talk about him i won't bring up his name anymore if you're it's me we're going to add las to the list by the way the list is getting bigger las diaz you're on the list now certainly um but basically we have i think we have a screenshot here of the check swing that occurred this was the tyler o'neal check swing uh pretty close i you could see
Starting point is 00:09:55 how he how he didn't get how he didn't see it derrick really could go either way on this one you know It's only a good three feet past home plate on his swing. Yeah. Yeah. No, I mean, it's it's, it's only almost a full swing. Yeah, he almost threw the bat in the Diamondbacks dugout.
Starting point is 00:10:12 And in the umpire was like, I don't know, I got to be honest, guys. It's pretty, it could go either way. Safe. Yes. So basically,
Starting point is 00:10:21 Tyler O'Neill walks. And that's when Tori comes out. Up to that point, Merrill had pitched six innings. So it was a strong outing. But he was still at like, 88 pitches, right? And I really think Tori just knew that that Merrill was going to lose it. Like Merrill mentally was going to unravel and he was either going to unleash on the,
Starting point is 00:10:41 on Las Diaz or he was going to do something potentially to cost the diamondbacks of the game. As Tori comes out, he pulls Kelly. As Kelly is leaving the field, he is, he is at the base, he's at the first baseline. I mean, he was literally almost completely off. It didn't appear that he said anything, but it appeared that he turned. turned around and looked at Las Diaz. Now, I don't know for sure, but I just feel like sound travels in a way as such that if Merrill Kelly was speaking out loud while he was walking off the diamond, would Las have even heard anything from him, right?
Starting point is 00:11:16 So it really felt like going back and looking at it that Merrill Kelly gave him a look, and that was enough for first base umpire last year's. To me, it looked like he maybe barked at him a little bit. Yeah. Like he might have said like, look back and said, yelled one thing, like, that's horrible or something similar to that. But you mentioned to me, Derek, that, you know, you think it could have had something to do with maybe chirping from the dugout potentially influencing Laz Diaz's decision there and
Starting point is 00:11:45 kind of blaming Merrill Kelly. Maybe he didn't think it was Merrill that did it. Maybe he did think it was Merrill that did it. But it seems as though, like, maybe just a lot of the noise of people of people being unhappy in the Diamondbacks organization and, you know, just on the field. there is what kind of caused the whole situation to unravel, which is incredibly unfair to Merrill Kelly. Right. Two BMC says we need a Johnboy lip reading of Tori tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:12:09 Oh, we'll get it. Not only do we need that, but I don't even know if we actually need that because I feel like you can very clearly see the things that Tori Lavolo is saying. And a lot of the words, me and Damon aren't allowed to say on this show anymore. And it very much frustrates us to the same extent. Sometimes we mute. Yeah, just to get it out. Or if you're like me, sometimes you just let it fly yesterday on PhNX Wild. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Just let F bombs just go. Sometimes you can't hold it back. But I will say that when it comes to what happened next, could best be described as the biggest blowup that we've ever seen of Tori LaVolo. Yeah. We've seen Tori Lovolo be angry at umpires. We've seen Tori Lovolo lose it. Tori Lovolo, I used an old picture. One time he poked like an umpire like this.
Starting point is 00:13:01 That was one of the funniest things I think I was. Yeah, yeah, yeah, one of those. Yeah, that was one of the objectively funniest things I've ever seen from Tori Lavello. But Tori lost it on Las Diaz. We have a series of images that illustrate exactly how much Toro Lov. So you don't need a lip reading because you can see what he's saying here. Do you have eyes? Can you see?
Starting point is 00:13:26 It was this far. around. Oh, man. Are you dumb? Yeah, I mean, this got the Chasefield crowd so fired up. I was ready to run through a brick wall. I think most of the press box. And you brought up the chirping from the dugout, and you're absolutely right.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Tori did bring up the chirping from the dugout a little bit during his postgame scrum. but I sit very far away. I basically sit at the suite level, the club level. That's where the press box is. Not only that, but I'm not in the front row. I'm in the second row, so I'm even farther away. And I could clearly hear the dugout yelling at last. He has more than I could hear anything else going on.
Starting point is 00:14:14 So I do think that there is a great possibility that maybe some of, you know, maybe maybe a little bit of what was said got blamed on Merrill Kelly, but it didn't matter at that point. Tori LeBolo was in the red. He was at 11. He was at whatever you want to say. And I've never in my time of covering this team since 2012, which I've been here longer than Tori.
Starting point is 00:14:40 I've never in my time at Chase Field ever heard a Tory chant breakout amongst the crowd. And that is what erupted at Chase Field. And it was a pretty electric moment. How many people, how many people were just stewing, just angry in their seats as the manager's name is ringing throughout the stadium. Well, and honestly, there was a lot of, like, you could hear, like, there was a lot of emotion
Starting point is 00:15:04 from the crowd tonight during this game. Like, you could hear a lot of, a lot of the grumbling, a lot of, you know, a lot of them getting angry with these calls when the reaction from the crowd was tremendous when Las Diaz called that not, you know, not a swing, right? Like, they let them have it. So I love bees. Bees, like, can we get? I want Tori doing that on one of these pictures right here behind.
Starting point is 00:15:29 So we can have that we can have this right here in the middle of our of our studio for the rest of time. That would be absolutely electric there. I'm all for it. I'll tell you though. I mean, there's there's a there's times where a manager does this on purpose. There's times where I believe we've seen Tori do this on purpose. This was not on purpose. This was this this was a lot of frustration coming to.
Starting point is 00:15:54 a head. This was a team that was seeing a game that was going their way, starting to slip back to the Orioles and doing it honestly with the aid of the umpires, right? So I think Tori just had enough. You know, I think that there is always the reassurance that his wise man, Jeff Bannister, is there on the bench and he can lose it and let Jeff kind of take over. But he doesn't want that. And I don't think Tori feels very proud of himself for doing this, but he should. he should feel proud of himself because he got his team fired up in a way that honestly they needed. And I think maybe just maybe for him as a manager, it was a little bit of a cathartic moment for him to kind of, you know, go off like that.
Starting point is 00:16:39 But I think moments like this are about protecting their players. And that's exactly what Tori did, right? He went out there. He protected Merrill Kelly. And the minute that he saw Merrill Kelly get ejected, the reaction was fairly appropriate from Tori Lavallo in regards to, you know, just how everything went. But the bigger thing was the way that the seventh inning ended because that was where things really got wild and out of control. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:06 There was quite actually there was a lot of confusion in the press box, considering that what happened there kind of would have been different had it happened during the play. The run might not have counted. The Orioles were able to play a run there in the seventh inning. after a bunch of things went basically haywire there, Damon. Yeah, for sure. It was a, it was a moment where Lordus Gurriel quickly went from being a hero to being a villain, to being a very bad guy, to being a guy we all didn't like very much,
Starting point is 00:17:45 and a base running error by the Baltimore Orioles somehow saved the day. Yeah. You had Lordus make a spectacular catch on a flyout. That was originally called a sack fly and an RBI, but has since been changed, by the way, to an error on Lordus for that run scoring there. But, yeah, I mean, when you take a look at that play, we can't really reshow it.
Starting point is 00:18:09 But those of you that have seen it know that Lordus made it, again, an incredible catch. And then sent the ball to the moon, almost had almost allowed two runs to score and almost gave up the lead. But again, a base running error caused the Diamondbacks to be able to get out of it. Then we had like a 10-minute discussion by the umpires while they figured out what the hell is going on. That was a lot of fun. I was my favorite part of the baseball game. That was the delay, the 10-minute delay.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Yeah, no. So the basically and the worlds go back and challenged it. Their challenge does not hold up. Basically it ends up with Jackson Holiday lining out to Lord it. Cedric Mullen's scoring. And then Tile O'Neill being out at third because he did not tag up. He thought, I believe he thought Lourdes didn't catch the ball, which is understandable. Yeah, it was a good play by Lourdes until it wasn't.
Starting point is 00:19:01 It was a really weird. I put in my original show, which has now since been deleted. But like, what a roller coaster. And I think I was thinking of that play in particular. Yeah. That play was such a roller coaster of emotions, Derek. You're like, nice play. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:19:16 And then you're like, oh my, he forgot to touch. Yeah. It was like it went from being one of the best plays we've probably ever seen Lordus make in the outfield as a diamond back to being one of the worst throws. We've ever seen a human being make in the outfield as a diamond back. Yeah. And then a base running error on the Baltimore Orioles that cost them big. I think, again, the discussion was in regards to whether that run would count.
Starting point is 00:19:42 So basically if Tyler O'Neill would have been caught on the base, path and been put out like essentially he was with the appeal, then the run wouldn't have counted, but the run counts because of the appeal, essentially. Yeah. So I think that there was a lot of discussion about that, which goes to show you how little umpires actually know about the game. And then, of course, there was a review that followed, and the play was upheld. So Diamondbacks end up getting out of the inning with a four to three lead, and that's how
Starting point is 00:20:13 the game ends. I think we have some more videos, by the way. I kind of just rush past it, but we have Tori here talking about. Let's first hear from him just in regards to this win. You know, you fight to get back on the right side of things and you get a big win. And winning a big league baseball game is not easy. You got to do a lot right. I think we did more right than we did wrong.
Starting point is 00:20:37 There were some things that we got to tighten up. We know what they are. But I'm going to focus mostly on the things that went well. And we got to do a little bit of a street. fight and I was proud of the guys for showing some toughness and resiliency and battling back and doing things in a very uncommon way which is very normal to us. You know, we give up some early runs which seems to be the thing that's happening with our starting pitchers. I don't know the reason why that's happening, but we've been falling behind but our guys continue to fight and fight and
Starting point is 00:21:03 fight. Corbyn ties the game up with a big home run. Josh Naylor has the big double down the right field line that gives us a four-two lead and then the bullpen came in and he just got super, super stubborn and hung on for us. Yeah, I mean, it really was, and I mean, it's an unfortunate part of this season, but it feels like every game that they are in is a comeback win. It feels like every game is them fighting and clawing their way back into a game. I believe, you know, the Zach Gowan start still wasn't, the start against New York wasn't solid.
Starting point is 00:21:38 It was a good win for the team, but it didn't feel secure. It wasn't like a runaway victory. Maybe Merrill Kelly's first start of the year was the only, solid victory this team has had all season long. Still, though, it's, uh, it, it gets it builds character a little bit when you have to figure out ways to win and maybe some of this early, you know, these early comebacks will cause them to have that mentality that they're never really out of a game. This one started out looking pretty bad.
Starting point is 00:22:04 And then the diamond backs did a great job here of coming back. But, uh, the offense, it is a little concerning though, I will say like, you're right. Like there's, there's something about, you know, needing to come back in all of these games where it doesn't feel like you're really like controlling the games. Yeah. Where, you know, some of the better teams in baseball, like, they control games consistently. Right. That's how they win 100 games.
Starting point is 00:22:24 That's how they win 90 plus games. So how can you control the game, though, when you're starting pitching has an ERA of six. And in the first inning, it's like an ERA of like 81. Right. It's unbelievable. No, you're right. And you also have the fact that you have Lordus and Gino who are just both in a slump and both, frankly, liabilities out there.
Starting point is 00:22:41 Gino didn't have a great defensive play on a shift play that on a ball hit to him. Gino is currently one for 22 since the grand slam that he hit against the New York Yankees. Batting average is 150. Lordus Gurriel, O for four tonight, currently hitting 152. And these guys are in the heart of your order. I mean, these guys are hitting, what, fifth and sixth in the line up to nine or fourth and fifth? Like, or I think it was fifth and six. And without Catell, you need him even more.
Starting point is 00:23:10 I know. Like it's it makes it almost exacerbates the need for those guys to step up. I mean, and you see it with Corbyn Carroll, which I'm sure we'll talk about him. But like, you know, he's doing that right now. And you need him to do that. And we talked about that last season when, when Cattel went down where it's like, I know it's been a rough year for Corbyn, but this is Corbyn's time where he has to be like, this is my baseball. Yeah. And I think Corbyn's doing that right now.
Starting point is 00:23:34 But you need Gino and Lordus, who are those extra power guys to to kind of help carry you through these moments. and they're two of the streakiest hitters on this team. We know that, but it's just not really culminating into the, into the best, at the best time right now, especially not when the pitching has been what it is. Stephen Banana says he'll still hit 50 homers, Derek. That's so that I die my beard teal because that's a bet that we made. Wow. We'll see.
Starting point is 00:23:59 We'll see. I was not present for said bet, was I? No, no, you were not. 50 home runs for Gino? That's worth it. I mean, that would be unbelievable. I'd have a hard, I still have hard time believing that's going to happen. I mean, come on, dude.
Starting point is 00:24:11 That's not going to happen. But offensively, yeah, you're right. I mean, tonight was not a good night. I'll go frosted tips with Derek if Gino hits 50. Oh, oh, oh, the pop just got sweetened. And Kevin's going to do a C, a certified lover boy heart in his hair just because he has to. Yes. He thought I forgot about it, but he will be getting that.
Starting point is 00:24:31 He will be getting that. And he did get a haircut and he did not get that. Actually, my haircut got canceled, so I still am a little rugged over here. Well, when you do get that haircut, Kevin. I want you to know that the people did not forget what you owe them. Trust me, I have not forgotten either. Cool. Well, I expect a heart.
Starting point is 00:24:46 I'm really mad now because I just realized that because you're here, I just pretended like Kevin wasn't. So, hey, on the ones and twos is large intimate, Kevin Thomas, my tag team partner from Sex and the City. Kevin's happy I'm here because it means that I get to take some of the load here of talking ball. I'm happy you're here too, so you can take some of the load because this offense has been terrible. I don't want to talk about it. They had bases loaded with no outs in the second inning tonight.
Starting point is 00:25:11 We're only able to place one run on a Josh Naylor double play ground out. Naylor did make up for it with a huge 2 RBI double in the fifth. It scored Pavin and Hampson. And that's what gave the Diamondbacks the 4-2 lead. So that was a huge play. But then again later, the Diamondbacks had runners on first and second with no outs in the sixth inning and were unable to score run. And it's just frustrating because it does feel like, yes, Corbyn is doing his part.
Starting point is 00:25:38 he got hit by a pitch tonight. Corby and Carroll hit a home run. Another home run is fourth of the year. And he has reached base in each of his first 12 games this season. That's on base street that is second longest in Diamondbacks history to Josh Rojas, who had a 14 game hitting street to start the season. What are we laughing about? Jim's comment.
Starting point is 00:25:59 And we can go ahead and bring up his super chat now. He says, guys, I'm not brushing my teeth until we win a chip. Jim, we can't recommend that. And then Jim asks if he should. should also not shower on top of not brushing his teeth until you're a chip. I'm fearful of your source of income and how it could be impacted by these decisions. And I don't think the Diamondbacks are a franchise that's worth you being that smelly, honestly, if I'm being completely frank. But by the way, going back to Corby and Carroll entering today six players in MLB have reached base in 11 plus of their first games this season, Corbyn Carroll, being one of them.
Starting point is 00:26:38 and he did have that solo home run in the third inning to tie this game. And that is our Sanderson Ford deep drive of the game. And like you said, Corbyn Carroll can't really do it all himself, right? But he's trying to. And I mean, he had himself another wonderful night. He continues to just be one of the most productive players on this team. And just needs some help. He needs some help.
Starting point is 00:27:04 Corby, two for three tonight with one RBI, one strikeout. and they hit my pitch. So good night for Corbyn. And overall, good night for this team to be able to hold this lead. It was another close game that the bullpen did an excellent job of. But before we get on to that, let's talk a little bit here. We have more from Merrill Kelly on what was working for him tonight and what provided him with this success after that shaky first inning. I just felt more like myself. You know, I think I got in a little bit of a robotic pattern and during New York. I wasn't able to execute inside, you know,
Starting point is 00:27:43 glove side part of the plate, especially into lefties. And that makes me a lot more susceptible to down in a way. You know, I think I've been around long enough now. It's a pretty big book on me and what I like to do. And I think I zero in on that part of the strike zone a lot. And if I can't execute into lefties to keep the outside part of the plate open for me, I can be in trouble. So today I did a better job of doing that and executing pitches.
Starting point is 00:28:07 and kind of just using my head and really just more pitching than I have been so far. I think the one thing that talking to these pitchers and getting through these, you know, early bad starts, you know, that you hear is they're not really panicked about this. They know what they did wrong and they know that they're still a good pitcher. I feel like it's just us that overreact. But like I said the other day, I think the overreacting is right. think it's deserved it's earned for from this fan base right because we thought we were going to have this amazing starting rotation last year and we've already discussed how bad the final numbers were and where they ended up as far as compared to other major league baseball teams that this the season so
Starting point is 00:28:53 far is starting a lot like that and then when we're seeing corbin burns who we had to do this team and thought was going to be our you know new ace struggle as well it just it just makes you feel like we're never going to have, you know, the starting rotation that we think that they can be or that we think we should have, that we deserve. I'm going to find my text that I sent to you and Kevin this weekend. I said, we could have Paul Skeen's, Zach Wheeler, Garrett Cole, Corbin Burns, and Tarek as our starting rotation. 4.76-R. And they'd have a 465 teen ERA at the end of September there, Derek.
Starting point is 00:29:30 You're not wrong. I mean, it genuinely feels like that. How do we feel about Brian Kaplan as a new pitching coach? Like how is that affecting all this? It almost feels like this organization is so damn cursed when it comes to pitching. Like did we use, do we use all of our good pitching juju on getting this guy and getting Kurt Schilling in the building? This guy is still considered the best like contract in Major League Baseball history,
Starting point is 00:29:53 considering the Diamondbacks got him before the 99 season and what he did from 99 beyond that. But he was supposed to be washed. He was supposed to be old and done at that point. And that's the big reason why, you know, that contract ended up being smaller than it probably should have been. Yeah. And why Randy ends up being the legend that he is. I wore this shirt to bring the starting pitching mojo to this team. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:16 And I'm not going to take credit for this because Merrill deserves it, but I deserve a little credit. That's all I'm saying. I'm willing to give you some credit. I appreciate that. Here's Merrill on why the first innings just always seem to get him. Yeah, I think if you look kind of over. the course of my career, if I'm going to get beat, it's usually in the first inning. I think my first inning here is probably not very good.
Starting point is 00:30:39 I think that just goes along with kind of getting into the flow of the game. Once you get the first inning underway, it's kind of smooth sailing from there. You kind of get into the rhythm of the game and the timing, and you throw enough pitches where you can, if you're off, if you can find your timing, then you can get kind of in the group after that. Well, we're going to have more on this game, a lot more on this game on the other side of this break. Don't you guys go anywhere.

Starting point is 00:32:34 that right, but. Derek's a scientist. I am a scientist. My boy's a scientist. No, I am not smart. I don't know things. Remember, I don't know bald. I don't know science and I don't know much about this.
Starting point is 00:32:43 But I'll tell you this. I do need something to help me have more energy. And that's one of the benefits of timeline. They include increased strength, energy and endurance. That's timeline.com slash PHNX. Code is PHNX. Derek, our chat went fully off the rails during that ad break. We are now, there is now matchmaking going. on in our chat. There's some flirting
Starting point is 00:33:35 going on. Please don't use Lysol as a clone. Jim is saying let's all not shower and brush our teeth. Let's make Chase Field the stinkiest we can possibly make it. That's a home field advantage. That's a home field advantage. I mean, things are off the rails right now on
Starting point is 00:33:51 the pH and X down inaction. I mean, this is what happens around here. I know if you haven't, you don't come around often, but let me tell you, these people are unhinged. And I am happy to be their leader when it comes to being unhinged. You truly are the leader of the unhinged people, Derek. That is that is a good, that is a good place for you to be in life.
Starting point is 00:34:09 Well, and I'll tell you, I mean, Tori and Merrill, they might have been a little unhinged tonight with their, with getting ejected. Or you could argue as Diaz. Merrill was plenty hinged actually. Tori was definitely unhinged. But Las Diaz, yeah, completely unhinged. And he's on the list, by the way. But we also, we have a little bit more from Tori here in regards to that defensive play. Here's what Tori had to say about that big play.
Starting point is 00:34:32 Yeah, I think based on what I saw some only high overhead, that's the, that's the view in my office. So it looked like the players were very engaged. We talk about winning inches, being being aware, having a high baseball IQ. It looked like the entire infield was on it, acted on what they acted the way they should have, got the ball where it needed to be. And you got to get the out. You got to record the out. So if they don't record the out, then we would have been in a lot of trouble. So they completed the play and got the out, which was.
Starting point is 00:35:02 which was huge. And time wasn't called. There was no appeal play. Nothing like that had to happen. The boys were paying attention. I'm really proud of them for that. We still have more talk about both teams' eyes watering due to the smell at Chase Field.
Starting point is 00:35:17 But here's the thing. The time backs will get used to it faster. Just like the athletics and the rays are getting used to those crappy, terrible stadiums without proper baseball lighting, they're going to have an advantage of those tiny, tiny buildings here soon. I wouldn't be surprised. Overall here, it was a good night for the Diamondbacks against Charlie Morton, who has been around in baseball for a very long time.
Starting point is 00:35:40 This is wild. How long? How long? Thanks to our friend Alex Weiner here. We have a lineup card from Charlie Morton's first start against the Arizona Diamondbacks. What is going on? He has 16 career starts, and this was his first one in 2008. Here is the lineups from that day.
Starting point is 00:36:00 Stephen Drew leading off. followed by O'Dog, currently a coach on the Diverbacks. Connor Jackson, Chad Tracy, remember him? He existed. Mark Reynolds, Alex Romero, Chris Young, Miguel Montero, and Usmaro Petit. Keep it up real quick, Kevin, for a second. This is the exact line. If you asked me, Damon, pick the lineup of your childhood, you know, one through nine.
Starting point is 00:36:26 I think the only edits I would make Derek would put like Justin Upton and right field and like maybe like Dan Heron on the mound, right? The rest of this is like, that's every Diamondback that was a mainstay of this organization from like the years 2006 to 2009. Like that blew my mind. That genuinely blew my mind. It's incredible. Sean says, Dan, is that lineup taking me back?
Starting point is 00:36:52 That's exactly all I felt when I saw it. Charlie Morton, again, has been in baseball for a very, very long time. Diamondbacks, I want to say that maybe. At least half of the team wasn't born when that started happening. Derek, if we did that exact same exercise for Dick Mountain last year, do you think that we would have gotten like Craig counsel and like in like Tony Woolmac in the lineup? A thousand percent. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:14 That's, I mean, he played with like he played with Randy. Yeah. Right. Like he definitely pitched up against Randy Johnson at some point in his career. B's says what is this lineup? Exactly. It's a line. It's something from our past for sure.
Starting point is 00:37:25 But one thing that the Diamondbacks have never really had in their past is a good bullpour. And we've talked about that historically about this franchise. Meanwhile, this bullpen so far remains very, very good. Shelby Miller came out. He pitched one inning of scoreless, hitless baseball. He just hit a batter. That seemed very intentional. Then you have AJ Putt going out there, giving up one hit in his inning of work,
Starting point is 00:37:52 striking out one. And then the Diamondbacks closer, Justin Martinez, with the light show and the song and the whole thing. it was a thing and he came out and he dominated. He got an ending one strikeout. Justin Martinez closer entrance eh
Starting point is 00:38:09 it leaves a lot to be desired which part the song or the lighting effects all of it? Oh you're you stop it see like and I don't want to be this guy there you get one entrance it needs it needs to be like
Starting point is 00:38:25 cinematic dramatic dramatic WWB wrestler entrance like this is your WrestleMania entrance every time. I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna concur with my guy here on this. I mean, you like when when Paul Seawald that light show with jump around that that that was like I think that's that's that's that's the top right there as as much as we all are glad Paul Seawald is not on this team anymore and Indian or sorry, guardians fans are losing their mind already about uh, you almost did the thing I almost did the thing but I think I think because it did not finish.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Yeah, no you're fine. finish it, that it doesn't count. It's a hard thing to remember. And then you call on the Guardians, so part of that name is in that name and you're just expecting me to remember every time. Like, like Steven said, I'm as old as Charlie Morton. What do you want for me? But no, you're right.
Starting point is 00:39:13 And I will say it was interesting to see Paul Sewell pitch today for the Guardians, but pitch in the seventh inning and not really in a high leverage situation, but they won that ball ballgame by score one to zero. But the Diamondbacks, again, their bullpen right now, man, just remains very. very, very good. You might be right. You might be on to something. We might need a little bit more
Starting point is 00:39:33 of an electric entrance for J-Mart. Meanwhile, he's still not officially the closer. Tori refuses to name anybody the closer. He did say that this was his intention. He did not, you know, he did not really hide this fact. He said during spring training that he wasn't going to choose a closer before the start of the season. He felt like those innings in spring training
Starting point is 00:39:53 aren't high leverage enough for him to really make that call. And he wanted to see how guys perform an actual. regular season play. We've seen AJ Puck struggle a little bit. Gave up a few home runs. Hasn't been as solid as we saw him last year. Meanwhile, Justin Martinez looks very, very good and very much looks like he could be the closer of the future.
Starting point is 00:40:13 Yes, Paul Seawald's entrance was fire. I also had, of all, like, it was. I can't get away from that song either. I was enjoying myself at the reggae festival. Cypress Hill came out. I was very excited to see them. And how did they end this set? Would jump around.
Starting point is 00:40:28 That's not even. their song. It's a House of Pain song. What are we even doing, Zyperz Hill? Did you get scared that we were about to blow like a three run with a monster home run? If you watch the video I posted on Twitter, you will very much see that I was miserable at that moment. And it's because it's like a Pavlovian response to the hearing that song. Something bad's about to happen, right? So anyway. All I will say on the bullpen is, yes, this bullpen has been very impressive recently. I love AJ Puck in that role that we've talked about Derek where it's like give him the the the we want him as the wild card when is I mean
Starting point is 00:41:06 when you see Gunner Henderson uh up you know to start the the inning right and he's a lefty throw a j puck out there and and let him go to work I mean right let him go let him get the heart of that Orioles lineup because he's our best he's on paper he's our best relief pitcher then jmart like he just this guy is built for the closer role he is he at this level and And I was looking at baseball savant. This isn't shocking to anybody, but it's just fun to like, they're like, here's the top, you know, pitch velocities in the game. And you're like, it's all of J.
Starting point is 00:41:37 Mark's pitches all throughout the entire list. Four out of ten are J-Mart business. Not even, Derek. It's like, it's like eight out of the first eight are all J-Mart pitchers, pitches. And that, that guy, dude, like, it's the most electric thing to watch on this team right now. Every time he steps on the mound, it's much, must-watch television. it is and like it i just i get so fired up by jmart i can hardly even talk about i'm getting emotional no i know it's because it's so great to have a young guy on your team like this not to mention the
Starting point is 00:42:06 diamond back signed him to that extension he signed through 2029 with team options for 30 31 and 32 he could be a diamond back for a very long time oh closer is that good for a very long time that's pretty good it's pretty good he might be throwing like a hundred and nine by that by the end of that contract but uh but they choose to make him slow down because if he throws a hundred and He'll kill somebody. He'll definitely kill somebody. But also I did want to say regarding Shelby Miller and Chris put it up here in the chat. Kevin, if you wouldn't mind put it on screen. It's way higher than that. Right up here, great podcasting. There we go. I'm not emotionally prepared to be impressed with Shelby.
Starting point is 00:42:48 I don't know, man. Well, Chris, I have a topic I'd like to bring up. This is a safe place, Derek. You have the floor. Did we win the Shelby Miller trade? People are saying. People are talking about it. That's all I'm saying. There's some murmurs happening. I'm not going to put my stamp on it.
Starting point is 00:43:06 I'm just saying we're talking. There's been some whispers in the baseball world of things regarding Shelby Miller and the coolest chain I've ever seen a relief pitcher where. It's pretty hot. It's pretty hot. That K-chain is hot. Well, we have to give out our king's tank. And even though there's a good chance that Corbyn Carroll probably deserves it a bit,
Starting point is 00:43:25 we did give it to our guy, Merrill Kelly. I mean, after the bounce back start that he had tonight, you have to be impressed. Merrill was not surprised. He feels like this is something that happens to him quite often. It's just after, you know, the disaster, basically after one of, if not the worst start of his career, it's just great to see him bounce back in this game. And then it was great to see him bounce back over the course of this game. Like to have that shaky first inning go the way it did and then have him get things
Starting point is 00:43:55 back on track and and really keep a fairly potent Orioles offense in check. So shout out to Merrill for doing that. Of course, we have much, much more to talk about from this game, but we're just yammering on. So we'll be right back after this break. Don't you guys go anywhere you're watching the PHNX Diamondback show? Well, after a win like this, doesn't some pure edibles sounds good just to really cap off the night. You don't really need your mood elevated, but you might need to get yourself some sleep after this exciting win and a great way to do that is with pure gummies, which was founded
Starting point is 00:44:31 right here in Arizona and Flagstaff, Arizona at Noble herb dispensary, which is the home of pure edibles, and now they are made right here in Phoenix, at Arizona. Pure gummies are not covered in sugar like all of their competitors, and they have the effects clearly listed on the tin. They are a full-fledged candy company offering gummies, their version of Starbursts, which they call kicks, chews, which are soft candies like carmels and hard candy. So check out the full variety that pure has to offer. Their gummies offer sleep support as well as candies with uplifting effects derived with unique cannabinoids.
Starting point is 00:45:03 And again, they are designed to be ripped a bit in half, making them easily shareable or easy to dial in your exact dose. Go find yourself some pure edible products from one of over 130 dispensaries across Arizona right now. And this guy says it best, but he's not wrong. Nothing goes together better than some pure edibles and a run to Circle K. Genuinely.
Starting point is 00:45:24 Do those on the same trip. Stop by Circle K. K, get yourself the snacks that you're going to need to go along with the pure edibles. Join the inner circle. If you haven't done so right now, you'll save yourself a ton of money on gas. You'll save 25 cents per gallon on your first five Phillips. If you partner that together with the Circle K's easy pay that you can get, you get 30 cents off for your first, I think, like, 180 gallons filled up. So those two combined can definitely save you some money.
Starting point is 00:45:49 You also save three cents per gallon every day after that. I'm doing too much math. There's too many discounts that I'm giving out there. I saved five cents off per gallon when I filled up at the gas tank today because I was, Kevin, I was on zero. Zero. I lost. I had 10 miles left on my, on my car. And it went from 10 to zero in the span of a half mile.
Starting point is 00:46:09 And I was like, oh, that's cool. Things are good. Luckily, there's a circle K on every corner in this city. That's right. And on April 10th and April 24th, if you're an inner circle member, those are inner circle fuel days. You will save yourself 40 cents per gallon from 6 a.m. to 11.59 p.m. So don't miss out on the savings. Join the Inner Circle for free by downloading the Circle K app.
Starting point is 00:46:29 Today, terms and conditions apply at participating locations. Visit CircleK.com for details. Tanner, you are right. Kelly did only have two earned runs. We did mention that earlier in the show, but that was a stack correction that happened, I believe, before we, after we had already made the graphics. They had charged that run, obviously the runner that Lordis Gurriel caught the ball,
Starting point is 00:46:50 but then through the wild throw, they had originally ruled that as sack fly. So that run would have been charged to Merrill Kelly. Instead, they changed it after the game to an error on Lourdes on a throwing error. So there you go. In regards to that, we have here also our numbers from this game. These are kind of fun. Let's take a look at the Desert Financial by the numbers.
Starting point is 00:47:12 Thank you to Desert Financial for always keeping our numbers straight here. Four three score here. Both teams had three hits. Not great night offensively for either team. Diamondbacks were one for 10 with runners in scoring position. again not great the diamond backs had far too many opportunities that they squandered including that bases loaded situation where they were only with no outs where they were only able to generate one run and then the two on no outs where they did not get any runs and chat i must
Starting point is 00:47:39 apologize these are not the correct hits the debacks uh they had five hits to the orio's four hits what are you doing in this matchup i know derrick that's on me hey hand up accountability is important and my hand is all the way up right now is everything else okay on that list or should we Hey, a stat correction, a stack correction after something's been done, not on me. But the hits 1,000% on me, my first season with this podcast,
Starting point is 00:48:02 I was, I don't know if I made it. I made it made a made one mistake on any of those graphics the entire season. My second season, I might have averaged, you know, half a mistake every other, every other podcast.
Starting point is 00:48:15 Yeah, I was, last season was a rough season in terms of me doing the graphics correctly. So, Kevin, I'll, I'll stand with you here, brother, me and you. No. Right here in the pocket.
Starting point is 00:48:27 It's harder than you think, guys. No. Everyone at home. I don't like the solidarity. I don't like the solidarity one bit. But again, the Diamondbacks win today. Great win, great bounceback win from losing the first game of this series, which we don't want to talk about too much.
Starting point is 00:48:44 But they did lose the game five to one. The offense obviously was a no show. That's concerning. And I think that carried over to today. Hopefully, we see the bats. breaking up a bit more, but so far this offense has been abysmal. But Zach Gallen was fairly abysmal on that day. Again, another bad outing for Gallen.
Starting point is 00:49:03 Couldn't control his knuckle curveball, only able to give the team four and two-thirds innings pitched. He had seven hits, five run runs, four walks, two strikeouts. I'll tell you, he also had some bad defense behind him in that game, so it does really feel like, you know, it's too many things not working for this team right now. And honestly, we should be thankful that they have five wins with the way things are going for this team. Starting pitching has not been great. The offense has not been great. Six wins. Six wins. Yeah, excuse me, six wins now. We are officially six and six. But no, Damon, this is a
Starting point is 00:49:41 concern, I think. The starting pitching is a concern. I know he was outstanding in the game in the middle. So what is your concern level with Zach Gallen? And do you put too much stock in? two out of three outings being pretty terrible for him so far this season. I said it after the first outing that I was I was worried about Zach Gowan. I'll be honest, Derek. Like, yeah, I am worried about Zach Gowan. And here's where I'm most worried about Zach Gowan. I'm worried for his bank account, his his generational wealth.
Starting point is 00:50:09 Because he's hurting himself big time right now if he continues to be this inconsistent. As we saw last season, right, he was incredibly inconsistent last season. there are times like against the Yankees in Yankee Stadium where it feels like when you need Zach Allen in a big start, the guy just gets up for it and he's just untouchable. And then he goes in the next game and people are sitting on his curveball. I was watching highlights before we started this show of yesterday's game. And one stuck out for me in particular, one particular hit. And it was kind of the backbreaking, you know, hit of the game. And that was Ryan Mountcastle's RBI single that he hit that one where he scooped.
Starting point is 00:50:50 that curve ball like this low out of the zone. And you want to know why he hit that, Derek, because he's, he knows a curveball's coming that entire time. There's like if he didn't know, if he was sitting there, you know, reacting, you know, to a breaking pitch.
Starting point is 00:51:06 He's not going to be able to hit a, a pitch that low out of the zone if he's swinging at it. But the fact that he clocked that it was a curveball immediately, read it the entire way. He was like he was zoned in on it, right? And that's where you have to be scared with Zach Gowler and like when people kind of lock in on his curveball and really are sitting on it like yeah it's sometimes the ball gets hit really really hard but again the defense behind him right did not help
Starting point is 00:51:31 oh no and it's like what tall it's it's like what guys are saying in the chat right like where is the defense that i came to know and love of this team where is putrid the staple of the diamond back's organization it's it's just so weird that we're drifting so far away and again i brought up the fact that there are factors impacting it, right? You do have a new third base over there in Sean Larkin. You have new coaches. You have new players. We were talking today about why is it that every throw to Josh Naler, why is every throw to Josh Naler so bad, right? Why is every throw over to first base look so like it's going to get past him? Like it's going to, like it's going to sail. I don't understand why the throws are so inaccurate over the first base. The only thing that's,
Starting point is 00:52:19 thing I can think is that we were so used to having Christian Walker, the human vacuum over there, who made everything look fairly easy when he scooped it up, that maybe just the team itself isn't used to having a first baseman over there that is more average than Christian Walker was. Christian Walker, again, just an outstanding defensive first baseman. And, I mean, he might not be that this year. The injury to, you know, his oblique might prevent him from being as good as he was in the past. But, man, I think that's, again, a big reason why we're seeing this team struggle with basic plays at times like that. And you saw the frustration on Zach Gallen, right?
Starting point is 00:53:00 He bent down after that single got through and those runs score and bit his glove. And it was like, I don't think I've seen Zach Gallen that frustrated with himself, with his team, with what's going on in life in the moment, you know. what I mean. So that Gallon's a fairly, a fairly cool customer. Someone way up in the chat, I'm not going to make Kevin scroll all the way up back up there to get to it, but someone in the chat had said that, you know, unfortunately, maybe it was looking like Gallen just really did have a tryout for the Yankees right in front of him. But I don't know. I don't think that. I think again, just like the rest of the starting rotation, I believe that this team is going to get right. And I think that the starting pitching is going to get right as well. But unfortunately, for the
Starting point is 00:53:45 time being the Diamondbacks will be without Catelle Marte. Tori LeBullo provided us with an update today and it's not great. Here's what Tori had to say about Cotell Marte's injury. Marte has a left hamstring strain. He's going to be out for a series of weeks. There's no timeline on it. We just got to let him heal, let him recover. And once we get to that point, we'll start to initiate some baseball activities and ramp him up and I'll keep you updated as to when that will happen. He feels great. He looks great. He's got a great spirit about him. They're going to as quickly as they possibly can get him back into the batting cage, get him on, get him on his legs and start to take swings. So that transition from when he can't to when he can is as short as possible.
Starting point is 00:54:33 Did they give you a great designation by any chance? Yeah, it's a little fuzzy. It's probably a grade one right in that territory. So the diamondbacks are going to be without Cotel Marte for a month is what it sounds like, right? Because you have the weeks off and then you have to get ramped back up and the diamondbacks are going to be without Cotel Marte for a month. I hate it here. I hate it here too sometimes. How diamondbacks was it for him to sign that extension and immediately hurt his hamstring? The most diamond backs?
Starting point is 00:55:05 The most diamondbacks thing to ever happen. That was my immediate reaction. Oh, okay. Yeah, that makes sense. That checks out for us. See, who says, yeah, two months without content. Well, honestly, like, that's with this organization, sometimes you're like, Erod will be back pretty soon.
Starting point is 00:55:20 And meanwhile, it's, it's July. And you're like, is Erod going to come back? Merrill Kelly, too. Merrill Kelly, yeah. So, I mean, it wouldn't be shocking. And it would be incredibly detrimental to this team because the backup second baseman have not been good, Derek. And they have not been encouraging on a defensive standpoint. It's like, dude.
Starting point is 00:55:41 Either side of the ball. I tweeted about, well, I don't expect them to be good at offense. That's the, I think that's the difference with, but like when you're, when you're Hampson or Tawa, brother, if you're on this roster, you need to be good at defense. That's what we ask you to be here for. And when like there was the other day, you know, Hampson didn't like fully lay out for that grounder in the ninth inning. And I'm sitting there and I'm like, I'm sorry, do we employ utility players who don't put their Bobby on the line? you know, that's what your job as a utility player was. It's all it's all your sign for.
Starting point is 00:56:15 Like, I miss Kevin Newman so damn bad. And Derek, this is why this is the exact reason I said I wanted Jordan Lawler on the opening day roster. This exact reason, because I know that there was enough at bats to go around. I knew Kattel has some injury problems. And now I'm sitting here and I'm like, I want to see Jordan Lawler play baseball. And I, you know, you could say, oh, you know, he needs to get ramped up. and the dime backs obviously don't feel that he's ready or whatever, but it's like,
Starting point is 00:56:42 at what point do you just trust the top 10 prospect in baseball to help get you through a tough time when, you know, your best player is hurt? Like I am ready for Jordan Lawler. It is time. Might be. It might be time. Well, we have one more break and then we will have some more discussion. We're going to do a little scoreboard watching 12 days into the season because why not.
Starting point is 00:57:03 So don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PHNXT back show. Well, we've been throwing a lot of shade on this. episode and that is what we do around here. Starting point is 00:58:11 Is that cool? It's pretty cool. Starting point is 00:58:44 raffle tickets for great giveaways, diehards get 20% off the event. So make sure if you're a diehard, you utilize that. And you do you at Heal River Resorts and Casinos, even on draft night. Make sure go out and have a great time. Then, you know, stop by, play a little Buffalo before you get out of there. Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:59:00 Buffalo. Visit play atheela.com for more details. Kevin Newman hitting 77 right now on the season. All right. Well, it would look better in a Diamondbacks. Probably would look better. Well, if you guys are watching on TV, make sure you jump over to go PHNX.com
Starting point is 00:59:18 and join us over here. We got a little bit more to go. And, of course, we do have to do some scoreboard watching 12 days into the season. Why, Damon? That's because the Dodgers lost to the Washington Nationals today. It's not just us. It's not just us, guys. Look it.
Starting point is 00:59:35 Does that make you feel better about losing a series of, nationals? A little bit. I told Kevin kind of ingest, but before the show, but I was like, maybe the nationals are just freaking good, man. Maybe. They only had one win before we played them. Does that change? Mostly, mostly, they're hot. They're playing hot. Yeah, they're playing hot. They got hot. They got hot. Mostly, I want to laugh at the Dodgers for spending $20 billion for being in third place. Exactly as they drew it up. You know how this works. Don't even start with me with the Dodgers. The Dodgers could be in last place through June 1st and then they'll win every single game
Starting point is 01:00:13 the rest of the season. Your third place, Los Angeles Dodgers. I don't hate that. Also, everybody else lost too. The Padres lost today to the athletics in what seemed like a little league game at times over there at that field. Same thing with, once again, where the race play. Both of those fields are a joke and they should be embarrassed of themselves.
Starting point is 01:00:35 The Rockies lost to the Brewers. lost to the brewers, but we don't really care about them. And the Giants lose a close one to the Reds by a score of 1 to 0. So when you take a look at the standings, like Damon said, you have, as you predicted, the Padres in first, Giants in second, Dodgers and 3rd. Sorry. You good? All right.
Starting point is 01:00:55 Followed by the Diamondbacks and fourth and the Rockies in fifth. Good point, Ryan. I didn't think about it like that. He is the most valuable prisoner. MVP. You know, I mean, again, it's crazy that this division is so good right now. It really is. But it's not a surprise.
Starting point is 01:01:14 The Dodgers are so good as a team in the division that you kind of have to be, right? Like, you have to go out and spend. You have to keep adding to the team. And that's what at least the Diamondbacks and Giants did. The Padres, you could argue, maybe did some adding. But they did lose Jackson Merrill for a considerable amount of time for injury. So the podgers also have a lot of talent on their roster. I mean, I know that they didn't exactly add this offseason, but it's not as if they left the cupboard bear.
Starting point is 01:01:43 But yeah, I mean, it's it's a gauntlet of a division. And we knew that going in. Hopefully the Giants slowed down a little bit because that's a team that I think a lot of us didn't expect to really be that competitive. And that would be a that would be a problem for the Diamondbacks. I think if they were, you know, a playoff caliber team in terms of our. chances for making the wild cards. So hopefully people slow down a little bit. You know, I got to take my licks in on the Dodgers while I can because we all know
Starting point is 01:02:13 what's going to happen by the end of the season. Well, I mean, they've been without Freddie Freeman who's going to be returning. Ernesto here in the chat says Tatis left with a Corbyn-like swing scare. So again, there's more information there. Who says genuinely what happened to Jackson Merrill? I believe it's a similar situation as. could tell, right? It's a hamstring injury if I'm not.
Starting point is 01:02:39 Oh, on a player that young? Yeah. You don't like to see that. Yes, hamstring strain from MLB.com. Hamstring strain. One week after $135 million extension, it might be. It's the exact same situation as Katel. It really is.
Starting point is 01:02:53 It's awful and it's terrible. We do have some super chats, though, and they might cheer us up a little bit. How do you feel about those Giant City Connects, by the way? Oh, I don't hate them, but one, they look like a son's jersey. that the Suns would have is like their, they're, you know, yearly addition to the lineup. I think if you're talking about it being an improvement from the weird, dumb, Golden Gate Bridge jersey. That one sucked. That sucked.
Starting point is 01:03:18 With the fog and the gold, it sucked. So it's an improvement, but it's still not great. I don't like it, but. And I don't understand. There's nothing about it that says San Francisco to me. What I mean, that's true. And I've seen some people say it's, Tony the tiger ass uniforms, but, uh, they're great.
Starting point is 01:03:41 What I need from you, Derek, is a little bit more hate when it comes to the city connect. Yeah. Because I, you know, I was, I was listening to the entire portion of you and Shane talking about it, uh, last week when, when you were talking about the kind of new crop of city connects that got released and you were very leaked. Sure. They're not out yet.
Starting point is 01:04:00 Yes. And you were very, um, I wouldn't say like, you weren't like, oh, I love all of these. but you definitely were like, I could talk myself into this horrific Chicago White Sox uniform that looks like the Bulls uniform. No, I never liked that one. I didn't like that one. That was why I didn't like it.
Starting point is 01:04:17 I think it's stupid and bad. You kind of liked all of them, though, you said. Well, it's, you know why? And I need hate, I need, I need, I need hater Derek out. That's what, that's what I'm here for is to breed that out of you. I'm a fashion guy. I like fashion. I know.
Starting point is 01:04:31 So that's why we- Candice says, Candice sent us a super chat. Candice, thank you. She says for Derek's shirt. Derek shirt. I'm a fashion guy. That is Derek's best shirt and he has a lot of great shirts. It really is my best shirt.
Starting point is 01:04:41 My other favorite one of your shirts is the scoring, the baseball scorebook shirt. Oh, yeah. That shirt is unbelievable. But I mean, yeah, you are a fashion guy. That's why I need a little bit like more like stronger opinions. Okay. The Chicago one looks like it's a boring. It's one of the worst things I've ever seen because it looks like it's a bad.
Starting point is 01:05:02 There we go. Uni watch, you know, thrown together like, hey, wouldn't this be fun if they did this? I hate that. I hate Miami's because it's ugly with the stupid stripes. And they think they're so cool with their like, you know, Miami vice colors. And I'm sick of it. And the heat already did it. Get your own thing.
Starting point is 01:05:18 Get your own thing. What else do we have? I still like the green monster one. The green monster one is sick. That one is objectively cool. Again, I looked at it and it took me three seconds to be like, oh, green monster. That's right. The thing is, is like, it's a.
Starting point is 01:05:32 And someone said it too. I heard I was listening to like a clip on Twitter. They were like that green is like it's almost so demonstrably the green monster green. Yeah. And it's a weird concept to think about because you're like, what do you mean? It's just green. But then when you look at the jersey, you're like, that's the green on the green monster immediately. It's pretty cool.
Starting point is 01:05:50 I still remember to this day as a small child finding out that the big green monster at Fenway Park was just a wall. You thought it was like. I really thought it was like a big green monster. The Philly fanatic or something. Basically, yeah, that's what I thought. Yeah. Gaird-Stubbs. It's like faded green.
Starting point is 01:06:07 That's why it looks like that, I think. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. It looks like it's been sun-aged or something. Like it's been sun-soked, right. Something you can identify with here in Arizona, because everything gets destroyed by the sun here. That's why we have all pro-shade concepts to protect us from the sun.
Starting point is 01:06:21 Stephen Banana says, can we get a PG reenactment from Derek and Damon in regards to the, I think the fight between Las Diaz? Do you want Tori or do you want me to be Tori? I think you should be Tori. Okay. All right. But also even though it's PG, if we do let it slip, we are past the hour marks. Okay, let's go. Let's go.
Starting point is 01:06:38 What did you? What? Wait, so who's Tori again? You're Tori. I'm Tori. I'm Blas. What are you an idiot? What are you, what you can't see?
Starting point is 01:06:46 What are you a bit dumb idiot with blind and no eyes? You need glasses. Oh yeah, I'm done. I'm done. You should be done. You should be done. You're good. I love what he was like, it was this for.
Starting point is 01:06:59 Yeah, yeah. Oh. He's showing him your eyes. Here's these eyes. Oh, man, it was great. You're not invited to my birthday party anymore. I'm going to go watch it again before I go to bed. Just that part.
Starting point is 01:07:11 Just that part. Look at that. We do need that frame. The bees is so right about that. Yeah, we're going to put that one up in the office for sure. BecomC clearly. Thank you for your Super Jet. He says J-Mar is single and he's mine.
Starting point is 01:07:22 That's my cake. Yes, we won't. I don't know. We might have a family, but we'll look into that a little further. Thank you, B. Comcy, clearly, for your always very hinged. Yeah, very rational, very professional tweets. They don't ever make us feel uncomfortable in any way, shape, or form. Bees, thank you for all of your super chats, Bees.
Starting point is 01:07:41 You're the man. He says, grateful our snakes are carrying my A's D sports vibes. And you know what? They play a game almost every single day. So, you know what? Whenever you need a little pick-me-up, the Diamondbacks are here. And if you also love being disappointed, boy, do I have a team for you to watch. Bees also says, justice for Pavin.
Starting point is 01:07:58 Paveen, Truthers, unite. And honestly, yeah, I've got to give you. Pavin his flowers a little bit because even though he doesn't get as much playing time as he should, Pavin is still doing fairly well for this team and he continues to be probably their most consistent at or consistent bat. Right now Pavan has a 360 batting average with a 467 on base percentage and a 987 OPS. I did look up Paving stats. I'm not going to lie to everybody at home and people can get mad at me. I know they will in this chat because of the nature of P.H. and X.D. Bax and the love for Pavan Smith. We die for
Starting point is 01:08:31 I looked at the lineup and I went I went we're oh pavon's batten third again huh and then I checked his stats and I was like paven's got a 987 OPS payv's pretty damn good especially without Gno and Lord is yeah right now AZ catch G thank you for your super chat he says add me to the unhinged list what's up guys great to have you here he also says uh he says I miss Kevin Newman as well of course you do you have a cat bear down easy catch G one of the goats. That I said that. Last but not least, B says, you did bear down.
Starting point is 01:09:05 Jay Martin had Lysol on special dealing out savings. You made me do that. This is your, I didn't make you do any. Bad influence on me, but. Say bear down. No. Never will ever. Chavez.
Starting point is 01:09:17 Calm down. You see through grenade tonight? I did. That was pretty awesome. I saw you. Well, that's all we got, guys. But the Diamondbacks will be back tomorrow morning. 1240 start tomorrow.
