Episode Date: May 8, 2025

Starting point is 00:01:37 They split the series with the Mets. What did you do to the score, Kevin? Kevin looks guilty. I actually, I corrected it. I had it 7 to 1 D-backs because that's what I woke up trying to manifest this morning. That's what we were trying to feel. That's where we were going. But of course, that's not the direction that we went.
Starting point is 00:01:58 The Diamondbacks, in fact, lost this game by a score of 7 to 1. They end up splitting the season series with the Mets by a score of 3 to 3. they dropped to 19 and 18 on the season. I guess silver lining here is if you look back at 2024, 2024, the Diamondbacks were 17 and 20 at this point last season. So at least there's some sort of improvement this year. And considering what this team was able to do last year, we might need those two games.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Those two games that we might be up right now might be very important. Merrill Kelly had a strong outing in the finale today, but did not get much run support. In fact, while he was pitching in the game, he did not get any run support. But what he did do is he gave the Diamondbacks a good outing today. A strong outing, at least as far as length was concerned.
Starting point is 00:02:47 And that's great for back-to-back outings. It was Merrill's longest outing of the season, I believe is what he said. And regardless of the outcome today, the bullpen didn't get overused today or yesterday, which does put them in a really good position for tomorrow, the start of that four-game series with the Dodgers. Merrill Kelly's curveball was really working well today. That's one of the things
Starting point is 00:03:10 that he had going for him. He also had the fact that quite frankly, Merrill did not cramp today. They were doing some different stuff with Merrill in between innings. Merrill was staying active. Apparently instead of kind of sitting down and cooling off a bit, Merrill was staying active. Do we have that clip of Merrill? We had more, this is what Merrill was doing in between innings to prevent that cramping issue that he's been having this season. And I think cramps, whatever we did, uh, worked. I think that's the tough part. It's hard to say that, you know, we did this and it didn't work today.
Starting point is 00:03:47 We did that and it didn't work today. But yeah, we just, I tried moving around a little bit more, trying not to shut down. Just trying to cool off too much. I felt like I was maybe trying to downregulate a little bit too much in between innings and then expecting, you know, the nervous system. them to go out and fire. So I think it was probably just a little confused. So that's what we went with today. We'll keep going at it. But it was as far as that goes, obviously we're going to get the win on the field. But for me, the no cramps is obviously the win. I don't think so. I think that
Starting point is 00:04:18 was honestly playing into some of the fatigue. You know, I think, I mean, you guys know when you sit around for however long and cool down, it's hard to just go do something physical. So I think, you know, I was looking at it for more of just a common sense aspect. And I think, like I said, I was asking my nervous system to shut down as much as I could and then ask it to, you know, fire on the highest level. I don't know if that's, you know, I don't know if there's any merit or science or anything behind that, but in my mind, that's, you know, kind of where we went today. And, you know, like I said, I don't know if that's for sure what helped not cramp.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Obviously, I mean, whatever he did, he felt good today. It was Merrill's longest outing. and again he was able to give the Diamondbacks a quality start here. Things did fall apart for him there in the seventh inning a little bit. His only blemish really was a home run to Juan Soto that he hit very far, very fast. It was 110.9 mile per hour exit below that went 427 feet. And of course that was the first home run that he gave up. Then Merrill tried to make it through the seventh inning.
Starting point is 00:05:32 Things fell apart a little bit for him there as well. But really, I mean, a solid outing today. Another quality start for Merrill Kelly and the Diamondbacks continue to get quality starts from their starting pitchers, which is something that, you know, again, you can't say they were getting early on. This is the 19th game of the season where a Diamondback starting pitcher tossed six innings or more. And starting pitchers have now allowed three earned runs or less in 13 of their last 16 starts.
Starting point is 00:06:02 and they have yield two walks or fewer in 10 of those starts. So the Diamondbacks pitching gave this team a chance to win. Bullpen, maybe not so much. But that Juan Soto, man, he had another two-home run day against the Diamondbacks. He would add another home run off of Jalen Beaks later in the game. That one was also a solo home run that went 380 feet, 105.7 mile per hour off the bat. So Juan Soto, man, you never know when all of a sudden he's, going to strike. What he did in that game was obviously enough to beat the Diamondbacks on
Starting point is 00:06:37 his own. The Diamondbacks offense could not get going in this one. But the bullpen did not do much to hold this game. The Diamondbacks had themselves, I guess one of those days where you take a look at the offense, you take a look at how the game is going, and Tori Loblo just decided to go in that direction of of just sticking with Jose Castillo there in the night and in an inning and a third of work even though he was kind of getting knocked around a little bit he gave up three hits and three earned runs he walked three and only struck out one and then Jalambique's he went an inning and a third he gave up a hit he gave up that solo home run to Juan Soto so that was the only thing he really did in this game but again Jalen Beaks still continues to be good Jose Castillo
Starting point is 00:07:28 Probably not going to be somebody used in high leverage late innings much this year, unless it's in this kind of mop-up role. But Merrill Kelly, like I said, absolutely gave the Diamondbacks a chance to win today. He is our King Snake in today's game. Merrill Kelly goes six in a third innings, allowing three earn runs. He didn't walk anyone, and he struck out six. So that's where the Diamondbacks stood today. The offense, of course, like I said, didn't give him much.
Starting point is 00:07:58 run support. And yeah, when you guys are talking about Jose Castillo here, Jose Castillo has not been very effective as a reliever for the Diamondbacks. He currently has a 10.38 ERA this season. And, yeah, it just wasn't a very good day for the Diamondbacks offense or their bullpen. But we have a little bit more here from the bullpen or from the post game. Here is Merrill Kelly on if he was experiencing fatigue there in the seventh inning. I don't think it was a result of what we were doing. I think that's, I haven't looked, but I'm pretty sure that's the deepest I've gone into a game this year. So I would probably chalk it up to that over just the fatigue.
Starting point is 00:08:40 I mean, we weren't doing anything crazy down there. It's not like I was doing burpees or running sprints in the cage, so I don't think anything had to do with that. I think probably just getting towards the end of my rope, probably the most pitches I've thrown in the game. And honestly, I didn't feel too bad. I just missed with a couple pitches. You know, the one to Acuna was just a bad curveball. The one to Torrance was just a sinker that was supposed to be away and ran back over the plate. I felt like the shape on the action of them were still pretty good.
Starting point is 00:09:08 I just miss with them. And obviously with McNeil was a long and bat. He does pretty good job of kind of throwing the head at changeups. I'd gotten on one before and, you know, I had to throw a strike there, three, two. And he just put a good swing on it. We also have more from Toy Lovello here on Merrill Kelly. and if he ran out of gas there in the seventh inning, maybe if Tori left him in too long,
Starting point is 00:09:29 here's what Tori had to say. Yeah, he was cruising. He was doing a really nice job. He was pounding the zone. Had a real nice fastball, good command. He had a change-up that was just clipping the bottom edge of the bottom corner edge of the strike zone, arm side. And look, he was in a really good spot.
Starting point is 00:09:47 So I had made a decision at 84, 86 pitches to send him back out there to complete the seventh. I had total confidence in that part of the lineup, he was going to be able to do it, but he just maybe ran out a little bit of gas. I would argue that maybe, you know, I know that the pitch count wasn't up there, but I mean, this is where it comes into,
Starting point is 00:10:10 you know, trying to save your bullpen. What are you trying to do here? The Diamondbacks were only down one nothing at that point, so I feel like especially considering the importance of this series, the importance of having an advantage here against the Mets, who we know, once again are going to be, they are going to be one of the teams there, either with a division title there at the end of the season or fighting for one of these wild card spots, it's utterly
Starting point is 00:10:33 important. It's, it's crucial that you win this, you know, overall season series against the Mets and today's game. Could have been that. Of course, Merrill Kelly then gives up two more runs in that inning before Tori does pull them out of the game. And then from that point on, managing of it seemed to be based on just getting through it with using as few of arms from his bullpen as possible,
Starting point is 00:10:56 which that's where you're conceding and kind of waving the white flag. For people that aren't part of the fire LaVallo crowd, that might be part of the reason why people feel that way. Those are one of the reasons why people get angry with Tori, right? It's hard to manage a team over 162 games season and still try to put everything into each and every game and try to win every game. Sometimes you've got to chalk it up to the fact
Starting point is 00:11:23 that you're not having a good day offensively. However, Corbyn-Carrill was able to tie that, tie what would have been a 1-1 game had they were able to keep that there with his solo home run. So you just never know what could have happened. And again, once this lead became what it became,
Starting point is 00:11:38 it's kind of a roll over and get out of this game. Let's just leave and start this series tomorrow. Let's flush it. Let's flush it. Let's flush it. Let's flush it. Let's flush it, Derek. Let's flush every loss. You can't flush it in the seventh inning.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Kevin. You can't say let's flush it in the eighth inning. We got we gotta do this. Tanner wants me to call a time of death, Dana, and it is May 7th, and I refuse to do that. It's pretty early. It's pretty early for that one. But here is, once again, Merrill Kelly on what he thought, how his outing went, and what was working for him today. Overall, I felt good. I was executing this just pretty well. Early in the game, the curveball was good. Probably the best it's been in a while.
Starting point is 00:12:20 But yeah, I mean, I try to get out as quickly as possible. I don't like to go deep counts. I don't like to go deep pitch counts. That's kind of my game. I try to get them off the barrel. And, you know, for the most part, today it worked, just kind of, you know, ran out of a little bit of rope at the end. Well, and I'll tell you, when you look at what Merrill was able to do today,
Starting point is 00:12:41 the numbers definitely reflect that not an overpowering day with just those six strikeouts, but still six strikeouts nonetheless. So we have to give love, especially because we're here in studio. okay to our circle k strikeout tracker throw that that bad boy up there on the screen six strikeouts not filling it all the way up but still a good day from merrill in regards to what was working for him that curve ball was definitely working for maryl kelly today merrill kelly uh had uh six whiffs today on the fastball three whiffs on the change up um again getting a lot of swings on his fastball today getting a lot of swings on his curveball uh and had good command good control things did fall apart for him a
Starting point is 00:13:20 there but still another quality outing by an Arizona Diamondback starting pitcher and you really feel like these guys are getting at least uh you know even though the offense hasn't really been consistent as of late you feel like the pitching is getting more consistent uh this is the diamond back 17th game of the year by the way with five or more walks uh and they have scored one run or more in the seventh inning or later in five straight games so uh this team continues to be a team that You can't really count out late. We're going to talk about the offense or the lack of offense on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere.

Well, Kevin, I took a little trip today into the team shop, by the way, and I did have an update for Diamondbacks fans. there was what looked like dwindling Serpientis City Connect merchandise. And we know how popular it has been. We know how we here all at the office went and spent way too much money on it over there. I did want to give you guys a good update because I saw a guy condensing a rack down and he basically told me that what was primarily left was 3x and 4x jerseys.
Starting point is 00:16:40 But apparently that's just what was on the floor at that point. I tweeted it out. and apparently I was informed that there was many more sizes, many more boxes to be open behind the scenes that were all coming out. So make sure you do not miss out on that. I also reported that the Diamondbacks were not going to be doing Serpientis City Connect custom jerseys until their next homestand. But that's not what I saw with my own eyes.
Starting point is 00:17:07 I saw them customizing Serpientis jerseys over there. There were several on the rack. I believe they were doing player names as well as, your own personal name. So definitely go down there. Right now, the only pre-prepared jerseys, I believe they have, or Carol and Marte. I know someone in the chat asked about that. So, of course, there you go. That's what you got. What do you got, Kevin? I'm just curious. You know, you're picking players to have in the store, right? Obviously, Corby and Carroll, Star, Catel Marte. Makes all the superstars. Superstar. But you give Geraldo Perdomo the
Starting point is 00:17:40 bobblehead night in the Serbientas jersey, and I can't go buy his jersey in the the store? That seems kind of crazy to me. No? Is that not wild? It's, it's, it's pretty wild. I mean, I would say that Pardomo's kind of like we know what he can do and we know what he means to this team, but I feel like he's having his breakout season this year. And I've got, you're, you're right though, like especially the fact that he is the Serbientis. It's like the face of it right now. Kind of is. And he looks better in that jersey more than anything. And again, why not have a Frogdomo, you know, um, jersey up there? Yes. Right.
Starting point is 00:18:15 I mean, I know, I think you go full bobblehead. We get, we go. Yeah. Domo is a frog. Frogdomo the bobblehead. Right. Frogdomo. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:18:22 This is so good. I don't, I don't know why they haven't. His beautiful amphibian blood. You know what? Bobbleheads are too much, but are not too much, but bobbleheads are a thing, right? Like, we get so many bobble heads. How about like one of those jumping frog toys?
Starting point is 00:18:35 The ones where you push on it, like we used to make out of paper his kids, you push on its butt. But instead of making the frog. But it's per domo. Yeah. It's just per domo. Like, poised. ready with his glove, ready for a grounder to come right at him. That would be awesome. But of course, what wasn't awesome today was the Diamondbacks offense, obviously only
Starting point is 00:18:52 mustering up the one run on Corbyn Carroll's solo home run. They did not have an answer today for Kodi Senga. Besides being patient with him and getting walks, the Diamondbacks again did walk five times today, but they could not convert any of those walks to runs. And they only managed to get two hits against him. In their previous outing, Senga was also very, very effective against his offense. But what they were able to do was limit his outing. They were not able to do that tonight, despite the fact that they did have those five walks against Kodi, Senga. Felt early like they were going to make him work, but Senga is able to go six innings, only giving up the two hits, no earn runs. He walked five and he struck out four. Not, again, not an overpowering day on his
Starting point is 00:19:32 side, but the Diamondbacks definitely didn't have an answer for him. I believe somebody said it in the chat, but that ghost fork was not exactly working for him today, which was allowing him to, or at least was allowing Diamondbacks hitters to lay off of it. Not exactly sure, but there was just this failing to capitalize on opportunities. That was the theme today for the Diamondbacks. You had Corby and Carroll walk to lead off the game, so you have him on base as a leadoff or as a runner over there at first, and he gets caught stealing by Mets catcher Luis Torrens,
Starting point is 00:20:02 who has an incredible arm. Then Gino walked to lead off the second, and then he moves over on an Alec Thomas double, but he tries to come home and he gets thrown out at home. Again, not a lot of speed there from Gino. It didn't seem like the best call to send him over there at third base. But also, this is one of those, you know, hindsight is 2020 because, of course, just two pitches later,
Starting point is 00:20:27 the Mets Senga throws a wild pitch. And then, you know, you know inevitably that Gino would have scored on that particular wild pitch situation. Not to not to really act like if the Diamondbacks were able to get some of these opportunities through like they that you know that would that would have been enough to beat the met's however it definitely could have changed the outcome on how tory manage this game how he used the bullpen if it was closer if the dimebacks were at least up at any point or were closer than what it is you know there was uh there there was uh something what oh I'm sorry I got to you guys distract
Starting point is 00:21:01 me in the chat all the time and my apologies to people listening I can't see what that is happening but uh yeah we we definitely have um uh a uh a a situation today where the Diamondbacks just could not get things going. The Pardomo failed on a sack bun attempt in the third inning. That was directly followed up by Pavin Smith hanging to a double play. But they did add some late runs there. Corby and Carroll gets the Diamondbacks first run of the day in a home run. It was a first pitch lead off Homer in the eighth inning.
Starting point is 00:21:30 The Diamondbacks once again have scored a run from the seventh inning to the ninth inning in 11 of their 12, last 12 games and five games straight. plus the Arizona Diamondbacks now have 76 runs in the seventh inning or later, which continues to lead Major League Baseball ahead of the Cubs and the Mets, who both have in the 60s. I think Mets now are in second with what they added on there. At the end, they added, what, five, six runs that the Mets added there today. So Mets would be directly behind the Diamondbacks right now.
Starting point is 00:21:59 It's 70. Diamondbacks are at 76, and the Cubs, 64, at least entering play today. But yeah, the Diamondbacks have been very. very good late in the game. They rank coming into play today from seventh inning to the ninth inning. They rank first in walks. They rank second and extra base hits, third in OPS, third and on base percentage, third in slugging, and they're tied for fifth in homers. So that's the one thing about this team and hopefully an encouraging sign to them that they shouldn't give up because they are able to come back late. They're able to score those late runs. It's a great reason to believe
Starting point is 00:22:33 in this team and not exactly feel like maybe you need to manage them. the way the Tori managed them today. But again, I also think that there is a very important series that maybe, you know, might be looming and being too important to the Diamondbacks right now, maybe too important to Toyo Lovallo with those Dodgers coming in town. And mostly Freddie Freeman, who's like hitting what? What is he hitting now, Dodgers fans in the chats?
Starting point is 00:22:58 Like 500? It's crazy how good Freddie Freeman is, especially with runners in scoring position. So they have that to deal with coming up. It has to do everything to save his best arms here. for that four-game series. But our Sanderson deep drive of the game does go to Corbyn Carroll and his solo home run there in the eighth inning.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Went 427 feet straightaway center field, 106.8 miles per hour exit Velo off the bat. It was Carroll's 11th home run of the season, which is currently fourth in Major League Baseball. Carol is also fourth in Major League Baseball in slugging percentage so far. I've been having himself just a great year, currently slashing 297, 370, 613 with a 983.
Starting point is 00:23:37 OPS this season. So Corbyn Carroll trying to do it all on his own. Unfortunately, he can't. Like we said, in yesterday's win, if you can get somebody else going with these guys, if you can get contributions from someone like a Lordus, like they got out of Jose Herrera
Starting point is 00:23:53 or anybody else in the lineup, you really feel like this Diamondbacks team can beat anybody. But unfortunately right now, their offense has not been performing consistently. And Corby and Carol Perdome, once again, those two guys along with maybe Josh nailer, they can't really do it alone right now. Killer Rex says DFA Suarez and man, this feels like
Starting point is 00:24:14 Groundhog's Day from last year. Doesn't it? Doesn't it feel like Groundhog Day from last year? We were saying the exact same thing. Oh, well, Killer Rex also says Marte is washed. So his opinion is now irrelevant to me. No offense to you, Killer X, but you don't know ball if you're saying Marte is washed. But Gino did make some great plays today, especially to Rob Pete Alonzo. That seemed to be his favorite guy to play. Meanwhile, Alec Thomas made a what seemed like a defensive gaff there in center field in the seventh inning that eventually did lead to some of those runs scoring against Merrill Kelly. But I would argue that that hit, it was the Luis Torren's double. I would argue that that ball was hit 108 miles per hour. Exhibit was one of the hardest hit balls of the game and already had an exit expected batting
Starting point is 00:25:00 average of 960. So even though Alec looked like he got a little lost there, I didn't get a chance look at the catch probability, but I'm sure it wasn't very good and not very high. And again, with an XBA of 960, that's almost guaranteed to drop. But I mean, this game wasn't great for the Arizona Diamondbacks for sure. And again, it might just be a regular season game. It might seem like just a regular season game. But with the Diamondbacks now splitting that series with the Mets, it's just not great. And I'm sure the Mets have themselves, you know, a run differential lead in that series. But we have more from here, from Tori, from post-game. Here's what he had to say overall on this loss. I felt like it was going to be a little bit of a grinder today. The quick
Starting point is 00:25:48 turnaround, Merrill did a great job in keeping it in this game. So it's six plus innings of really good baseball and maybe just ran out of gas and had to remove it from the game. But I thought overall the concerns that we had about Merrill with the body, would he be ready? He went out and addressed those and did an excellent job. You know, there were some changes to the routine in between innings. I spoke to you guys about that pre-game. I don't know exactly what that is, but I think a lot of it worked. And you get that type of start from Merrill, you're expecting to win the game and put out some points,
Starting point is 00:26:21 but we just couldn't get a big hit. I thought we had one good opportunity with pinch-hit situation with Catell that, unfortunately didn't go the way we wanted to. We had some small opportunities to push some runs across. We didn't. It just was one of the first. those days just didn't have a great feel to it from where I was in the dugout and we just couldn't get rolling. So maybe it's credit that their starting pitcher. He's got very good stuff. But I believe
Starting point is 00:26:44 enough in that team that's sitting in that clubhouse right now that they can put up points against any type of starting pitching. We have to. We got to be able to beat any type of starter. So that's not an excuse, but I just feel like it was one of those days. So flush it come out here tomorrow and be ready for day one against the Dodgers. Well, of course, we did have, like I said, that failed Sack Bunt attempt from Pardomo, Tori was asked who's decision that was. Tori took responsibility for that. Here's what he had to say. That was for me.
Starting point is 00:27:14 You know, it's kind of that gray area. And my projection was I wanted to get us to a lead, protect Merrill with our positive role relievers. You know, this is a part of the game that the common fan may not understand. You know, I've one of two choices. Look, there's two roads for me to choose. If we're ahead, I choose, I choose option A. And that's where I feel like we're going to go out and win a baseball game.
Starting point is 00:27:35 Option B are the negative role relievers where there's a chance we can get banged around a little bit. So I want to protect Merrill with the lead. And the reason why I have to choose Option A and Option B in certain situations is if I choose Option A, I don't have them ready for tomorrow. So I was going to sell out on one side of it. So it was my call 100%. We talk about it. We use bunning as a weapon.
Starting point is 00:27:57 Truth be told, 2.0, I was going to take it off and let him hit. But it never got there. We've got to be better in a couple of situations. He's got a bunch strikes. You hit strikes, you bond strikes. It's the exact same thing. So maybe you let the pitcher throw a couple more balls. You might get himself in a different situation.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Derek, I was talking to, yeah, shout out to John Oliver. I was talking to Damon, beloved Damon Dog Bark Bark. After this game ended, I was cutting these clips. And I heard him say flush it again. And I was thinking to myself, like, I'm not anti-Torri. You know that. But I'm also not above criticizing Tori. I feel like if you fall into the habit of saying something after every,
Starting point is 00:28:33 loss, like maybe skip a loss before you say flush it again. You know what I mean? Or maybe come up with a different way of saying flush it. Because Damon's answer was, well, it's coach speak. What do you really want him to say? And I said, I get that. I don't want him to be apoplectic after every loss. But I do feel like maybe communicating in a different way that this loss might impact
Starting point is 00:28:51 you more than the last one or whatnot. Just let us know that something is going to be changed or implemented differently as opposed to just flushing it and forgetting it ever happened. So like, in your opinion, opinion, how do you feel about the flushing trend? And also, like, is that something that I or people in the chat should be annoyed about with him to consistently saying flush? I mean, it's, it is coach speak, right? So I'm sure there's things I say on this podcast all the time. Typically, when I start saying something too much, we, we agree that you ding me with a little bell, right? Or hit me with the
Starting point is 00:29:23 Glock and spiel, right? Sometimes maybe Tori needs to be dinged with the bell a little bit when it comes to the flush and stuff. I think you and I have talked about this a bit and it's kind of, you know, We related it to the show, right? When we have a bad show, when I have a bad show, Kevin never has a bad show, right? He never gets the clips mixed up. He never messes up the score in the scorebug. I would literally never do anything like that. I would literally never do that.
Starting point is 00:29:48 He would never. Only an idiot. Only a fool. Only a fool would do that, right? So here's what my point is is that we said like in listening to Tori so much like we do in cutting these clips and doing the show, it starts to get into our mind about. this show, right? Where like, yeah, I can't sit there myself and worry about the mistakes I made because all that's going to do is make me lose sleep tonight. And I'm going to get up tomorrow. I'm going to be tired. I'm going to be grumpy. I'm going to be grouchy. I'm not going to be in a good place to
Starting point is 00:30:19 do tomorrow's show. And who's that going to help? I'm going to go O for Four tomorrow and I'm off to flush tomorrow's game. Right. So like I get the idea of flushing it based on the idea that you are trying to just put whatever behind you. The other thing about it is sometimes Tori will say flush it about the wins too. Like he will say like you can't get too high or too low, too high on the wins, too low on the losses. But I think you're right.
Starting point is 00:30:44 I think that there does come a point where what people want to see is maybe some more passion out of you, right? And I think the problem with that is that's maybe more relatable to other sports, but not a 162 game, 162 game baseball season, especially when we're still here. in the first 40 days of the season. I don't, and in my opinion, maybe I'm unique in this, but I don't think for me, I want Tori to be super, like, passionate and, like, on fire all the time.
Starting point is 00:31:10 But I do think I would love to have... Are you just sick of hearing that? Well, yes, but I think, like, I would love to hear him have more of a... I would like to him to communicate there's gravity to these losses, that these actually do count. Sure. That you can't literally just flush it because it goes on your record. You are your record at the end of the day. The Diamondbacks are 19 and 18.
Starting point is 00:31:28 They're about a 500 team. They're not the talent of a 500 team. You know what I mean? So, like, would he flush that or did these truly not matter to him? You said the thing. I don't care. I'm replay. You know what you have to do.
Starting point is 00:31:39 We are one game above 500. We're not 500. So now you have to go send little Ketel up the mountain because that's the only thing right now that can make me not bummed out. So send him up the mountain. We are one game above 500 still. What debacks loss? We are one loss. What are we?
Starting point is 00:32:00 talking about. Yeah, no, I mean, you're right, though. I think that overall there comes a point where, like, they're, like, and that's a weird thing is baseball doesn't have like a lot of coaching in between losses, right? This game ends tomorrow. There's another one. We get on a plane, we go. There's conversations to be had. Pitching coaches, hitting coaches, they go over. They have conversations with guys. Things are discussed. I mean, Tori talks about with his staff and then that kind of gets dispersed through the team. But yeah, I mean, I guess, I guess there could be some more to be said, maybe every once in a while, go in there and flip over a table full of, you know, Gatorade or whatever, right? Like, do something to just get this team fired up, right?
Starting point is 00:32:40 And Tori is good at that and knowing when to do that when it comes to, like, one of those famous objections that he doesn't get too often. But when he does, it seems to be at a very effective point, right? Like, he's really trying to convey a message to his team. And Tori did tell us today after the game about what his message to the team right now is, and here's what Tori had to say. Little things matter. Details matter. And, you know, sometimes I feel like we're a little bit getting away from our identity, trying to do a little bit too much and not, not linking up one through nine, offensively, not handed the ball off from pitcher to pitcher effectively. So link up, pay attention to the details because every little thing matters and everything else up.
Starting point is 00:33:23 I mean, we hear this, that's another thing that might be a cliche besides just the, just, to flush it is the like we play a brand of baseball we play that's not diamondbacks baseball that's that that's that standard that tory's trying to talk about setting the standard is is that we do not accept you know those mistakes being made right but you kind of have to and right now there's not much you can do about it it's not like guys can get benched and replaced with another player right now based on mistakes it's kind of like some of you are saying in the chat when it comes to to to troy or even the players what consequences are there for making mistakes what consequences are there for making the wrong decisions.
Starting point is 00:34:02 There doesn't seem to be. And of course, with the lack of depth right now and the injuries the Diamondbacks are experiencing, there isn't a lot of people to turn to. It's kind of, I mean, you kind of look at like Gino is a perfect example due to the people, due to people, you know, literally foaming at the mouth to get Jordan Lawler up here at a major league level, right? So it's like everything Gino does is placed under a finer microscope because of the fact that people can't wait to see Lala promoted. They want to see him here.
Starting point is 00:34:30 And his numbers right now for the Reno Aces are nuts. And he was the player of the month in the month of April. When the downbacks are struggling offensively, it's hard to look at Jordan Lawler and even Jake McCarthy hitting 400 and not be tantalized by bringing them up to try to help fix this offense and add a spark. Someone got mad at me yesterday in the comments for comparing what Barrosa and Jake McCarthy are doing to Lawler. And while Lawler absolutely is a much more important talent to this team, especially this team's future.
Starting point is 00:34:59 I was just using it as an example that, no matter how bad guys are doing at a major league level, look what they're able to do as a member of the Reno Aces. It's just, it's hard to judge without Loller actually being called up and playing against major league pitching what he's actually able to do at the dish, what his numbers would actually look like. Reno's just such an anomaly and it's so crazy. But that was the only reason why I was saying that.
Starting point is 00:35:25 But back to the Diamondbacks, of course, Alec Thomas hasn't been bad. He had a double in this one. He had one of the Diamondbacks only hits. Coming into this game, he was hitting 313 in his last eight starts. So Alec Thomas has been one of the guys that has been producing for this team. But again, we just need them to do it all at the same time. That's what we need.
Starting point is 00:35:46 Put together some sort of run, put together some sort of, you know, some sort of game like what we saw yesterday. Right? Yesterday was a great example of contributions from somebody else stepping up. up like Lordis did, like Jose Herrera did, leading this team to victory. Unfortunately, they lose today by that correct score you see up there in the scorebug, 7 to 1. Boo. I had it right the first time.
Starting point is 00:36:09 Boo. I mean, like, we have video evidence of it, Kevin. This is not the reality I want to live in, Derek. Unless you're going to alter this video before we post it. You know what? Bring me back MLB the show playoff series with Slate Cicone going out there, blowing everything. because that you don't know when you're in the good old days until you're out of the good old days, Derek. Until you've left them.
Starting point is 00:36:31 Until you left them. But we have more from this series. We're going to give you the numbers from the overall series on the other side of this break. We're also going to preview that upcoming series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which is kind of terrifying to look ahead to. But we have no choice. Tomorrow it starts. Starting point is 00:39:06 Stay hydrated over at Circle K. Well, Kevin, these numbers are probably going to make me sad. They're probably going to be way closer than they should be for a series that the Diamondbacks lost. But let's take a look at the numbers from this series presented by our friends at Desert Financial Credit Union. Of course, the Diamondbacks get outscored in the series, 13 to 10. the Mets had four home runs through the Diamondbacks three. Most of those were hit, I think, all of those hit by Juan Soto. A lot of those were hit by Juan Soto.
Starting point is 00:39:35 Starting pitching ERA, fairly close for both teams. 3.06 for the Diamondbacks. Pretty much the only bad outing ends up being the first game, or actually today's game for Merrill Kelly, probably your worst outing today. Ryan Nelson went four and a third, gave up two runs. But again, Mets pitching, which is the best. best in baseball continues to be very good. They're starting pitching ERA in this series,
Starting point is 00:40:00 2.65. The Mets only gave up six earned runs or excuse me, five earned runs in this series. Relief pitching ERA here, 4.00 for the Mets, 6.75 for the Diamondbacks. Again, seven earned runs allowed by the Diamondbacks bullpen. Four allowed by the Mets bullpen. So again, another opportunity here, another squandered situation, especially in that first game where the downback's lost by a score five to four. But today, not much you could do. The offense just really couldn't get going. Not great considering what continues to happen in the N-Hell-West.
Starting point is 00:40:37 I think we don't have an update from the Dodgers game that they're inevitably going to win today, but we do have our N-Hell-West update, at least prior to today's game. This is updated. The Dodgers won today. Oh, you got an updated version. This is updated. Dodgers reach 25 games.
Starting point is 00:40:55 I imagine they're the first team in baseball. They are. I imagine the Giants were one of the first ones to reach 24, and the Padres were one of the first to reach 23. Those teams seemingly can't be stopped. And yeah, that's where we sit right now. The Diamondbacks, just one game above 500 at 19 and 18. And this is just proof of life that the Rockies are still a baseball team.
Starting point is 00:41:18 They sit at 6 and 28. If we didn't show there's, like if we left them off of there, then people might forget that they exist. If the Rockies play a baseball game in the mountains and no one's there to watch it, did it really happen? I don't know. Did the people on the party deck watch it or no? Well, they probably didn't.
Starting point is 00:41:35 They were too busy having a great time at a baseball stadium, not actually watching the game. But of course, we have a preview here of this upcoming series with the Dodgers. But first, I do have to remind you guys to go make sure you check out our merch tab. We got ourselves some incredible shirts. And of course, if you haven't seen our new 2025 shirts, they're beautiful.
Starting point is 00:41:57 We got our Jesse Jr. shirt as well as a few of our new Go Snake's designs. And it is the year of the snake. So why not go out and grab some great snakes merch? Those four fresh designs are available. Over at go ph-h-nx.com, all you got to do is go over there hit the merch tab to give yours today.
Starting point is 00:42:13 And do not forget that all die-hards get 20% off your order. Kevin, do we have some super before we get into this upcoming preview. We have a literal handful. Five super chats. A handful. Let's start. What do we got? Michael says, wonder how much loss of Tony P. affects this team.
Starting point is 00:42:31 I don't know. I mean, today you could say that was a bad call there by Sean Larkin sending Gino there on the play where he got thrown out. I think that maybe part of it is just knowing the speed of your players, right? And kind of understanding the situation, you also have got to give credit where credit it's due, right? So sometimes you want to blame the manager for when things go bad or you want to blame the third base coach for when things go bad. I got to give credit where credit is due to the Met Center fielder, who's it Tyrone Taylor? This man made an incredible transition and throw and he got Gino. I mean, this was just a good, it was a well-played ball perfectly played there in
Starting point is 00:43:16 center field and they were able to get Gino trying to extend that play. But I don't know. I mean, overall, what we've seen is a problem with the base running. We've seen a lot of sloppy sloppiness by this team in areas where they were really good previously. And I mean, I don't really have much of an answer for you, but I do think that Tony Perishika was a big reason why this team had success. I mean, when you look consistently at the success they had, that's really something that might be missing here. And actually, Tori did speak about this after the game. He talked about those late steel attempts
Starting point is 00:43:53 and just the special teams execution here at home. How's the late steel? Yeah. Yeah, we use that pretty well here. And look, the catcher came out firing. He's got a really good arm. And Shortha made a great play. Another one of those hands played.
Starting point is 00:44:09 So that's okay. There's a few things that bother me. The bunch situation bothers me a little bit. and we got to get better at it. And that was in regards to Corbyn Carroll getting thrown out there in the first inning. And yeah, Torrin's made a great throw there to get him out.
Starting point is 00:44:26 He has an incredible arm. Seeing that throw in person was impressive. However, it's just, yeah, it's not really, sometimes you had a game plan and it just didn't go your way because the opposing team made an incredible play. This was one of the things that was really frustrating about one of the earlier losses against the Mets
Starting point is 00:44:46 that I remember in one inning, they made three absolute highlight real plays and Rob the Diamondbacks three times consecutively of what very much seemed like they were going to be hits. I believe all three of those outs had an XBA over 500. So you just can't really always expect. You can't always expect teams to be making the plays that the Mets are, but you've got to tip your cap when they do because that's not a lack of execution on your part. it's more of an impressive play on the defense's end. But we also have a little bit here more from Tori on not capitalizing on those mistakes today against Kodi-Senga.
Starting point is 00:45:26 Here's what you have to say. I agree with you. I agree with you. So devac baseball is clean, crisp, and we make good decisions. Now look, the ball at home play, that's a tough spot. Larks in a really tough spot. we know we got some strike growers out there in guys like Correa and and Frankie, you know, they're elite at it.
Starting point is 00:45:49 So we talked about that pregame. We knew there's a chance of that he sold out to it. Once again, you know, we're trying to get a lead, protect that lead. Those are little things that we talked about. Was it a force? No, I thought it was a bang, bang play, and I'll take that every time. The things that are a little unsettling are, you know, maybe not choosing the right time to steal a base or making a defensive play that,
Starting point is 00:46:09 that we need to make. So little things that add up in that area in that space, you're right. We got a let's say to throw the baseball and maybe throw himself out of that game. Five walks in the first three innings is a lot for any major pitcher. We just couldn't capitalize. Yep. And that's absolutely it. Again, what ended up happening there late? I don't know if this game goes that same way if the Diamondbacks are closer, if they're able to generate some more runs.
Starting point is 00:46:35 But, yeah, obviously, it doesn't seem to matter much when you're nitpicking. a run here, run there when the Diamondbacks lose seven to one. Meanwhile, they look to face off against a Dodgers team that just won 10 to one today. And I don't know how hot it is to come into this series with the Dodgers, but we're going to preview that here in a second. Joshua Lopez says, good thing. Tori set that standard quote unquote last year. Yeah, I still had a problem with that personally because I still feel like you repackaging expectations as something different is still expectations, right? I don't know if the team had those same expectations.
Starting point is 00:47:13 Maybe the starting rotation did. I know there were very, very high expectations for what this starting rotation was capable of. But yeah, I mean, I guess that's you trying to take something that's bad and repurpose it into something good, making players understand that there's a certain standard excellence that we expect around here, and that's how we all are going to execute. But it still doesn't change the fact that even those standards can wait
Starting point is 00:47:38 down on a player and make them feel that pressure of living up to standards, which is expectations. I was speaking with Ernesto about this in the chat. Like with the standard thing, I feel like that is something that is set with proof of concept over several years. Sure. Right? So not just the one World Series birth, but maybe another one, a couple years down the line, maybe like, I don't know, you get what I'm saying here.
Starting point is 00:48:00 Is it like him? To clarify, what he was saying last year was that he was trying to set a standard. True. So he wasn't saying we've set it yet. But, you know, but it's in the same breath, you're right. Because when he talks about, like in that clip, Diamondbacks baseball, right? What is that really? That's a standard.
Starting point is 00:48:18 You're setting a standard for what Diamondbacks baseball is. Clean, crisp baseball, mistake-free baseball, making those plays that not everybody makes, right? Like, making those catches that don't have a high catch probability, making those spectacular plays. Also, not making mistakes like we've seen out of them time and time again. And today wasn't a really sloppy game defensively. It was just more, again, not capitalizing on the few opportunities that they had against Kodi-Senga, not to mention the fact that they were at one point getting him to throw a lot of pitches. So even if they weren't going to be effective of them, much like the last outing,
Starting point is 00:48:53 they maybe could have knocked him out of the game an inning or two earlier and get into that Mets bullpen. Maybe then they can find success. But we got a couple more super chats. Let's get to those real fast. Michael says, can we discuss Ketelson's coming back from injury? No, we can't, Michael. No, we can't. No, things aren't good, but again, that's baseball, right? Like, you don't come back and, I mean, as much as we wanted him to be that guy that was hitting two dingers on the backfield game, that's a backfield game. That's not real Major League pitching. And again, I mean, I think that they're trying to slow play Cattel, just like they're trying to take it easy with someone like Kevin Ginkle, who just returned from injury. But yeah, I mean, you can't, I don't know if in baseball you can really expect a guy to come back from injury and be just contributing. being right out of the gate. Catelle is Cotel, and I think that, you know, while some people,
Starting point is 00:49:44 like some people have said, like obviously it doesn't look like he's running, especially on a lot of these outs, down the line very fast, or even fully down the line. And you're right about that. But it feels like that's something that's been told of him. And again, they're trying to be careful and make sure that he doesn't reaggregate that hamstring injury because that would be terrible. B's with the Super Chat says the Roger Bessian's football slider will save us all. And bees, you are a known troublemaker and misfit. And I love you for it. And Benjamin Hunley says, how many homerless games does Ketel have to play before we start to get concerned?
Starting point is 00:50:19 30? I don't know. How many is a lot? I don't know. I mean, I don't expect Ketel to come back and be hitting right away. I really don't. And again, I know that that is, it's concerning. And again, the Diamondbacks have a lot.
Starting point is 00:50:34 of injuries. So there's a lot of this going all around. Not to mention the fact that Tori was already trying to slow play people, give people days off, do all of that in the month of April. And I heard and saw your tweets and people were mad that he was giving people days off. And now you can see why he was. But I don't know. Like that's the one thing that seemed the team seems powerless against is what's going on with these injuries and what's been going on with the loss of personnel. Luckily, they did not lose Corbyn Burns for an extended period of time. We have our probables for this series with the Dodgers, which the Diamondbacks host this series with this four game series with the Dodgers to kick off their first NL West action of the 2025 season.
Starting point is 00:51:13 Diamondbacks went six and seven versus the Dodgers in 2024. We have here Brandon Fott going against Yamamoto in game one. You have Erod going against Roki Sasaki in game two. You do have Corbyn Burns going on Saturday in game three against Dustin May and then Zach gallon there against that notorious TBD on Sunday. So you feel pretty good about having Burns Gallon and fought. No disrespect to Erod in this series. But with those guys in there, you feel pretty good. Tori did provide us with an update on Corbyn Burns. Here's what Tori had to say about Corby. Yeah, good question. Corbyn threw a really good bullpen today. The data and the information that we
Starting point is 00:51:55 get with the track man, everything was real good. He felt good. So I had a lot. as we anticipated, Saturday is looking really, really good. All right. So we do have Corbyn's going there, and, of course, very, very good to hear that he is not going to miss significant time at all, especially, you know, because we can't afford that. But let's take a look at this Los Angeles Dodgers team because they are very, very good this season. 24 and 12 this year with a plus 25. 25 and 12, yes, now with a plus 44 run differential. I'm sure that that's what, plus 33, whatever?
Starting point is 00:52:28 Plus 53 now. Yeah, plus 53 now. I can do math. I can do math. Yeah, 25 and 12, they won today, 10 to 1. They just kick ass, really, is what's going on here with the Dodgers. And, like, I think the, I guess the, not surprising thing, but when you look here at what their offense is doing,
Starting point is 00:52:47 it's really been picking up the slack for starting pitching and relief pitching that hasn't been terrible, but has been kind of middle of the pack here, as you can see, they are still 8 and 2 in their last 10, so that's still correct. They have a 790 OPS, which was second in Major League Baseball. But then starting pitching ERA, can you throw that back up there? I don't know those off the time. I had starting pitching ERA is 3.94, which is 15th in Major League Baseball, relief pitching ERA 3.61, which is 11th.
Starting point is 00:53:16 And then they have zero outs above average, which is good enough for 14 this season. So, again, the Dodgers really doing it with their offense, much like they did it today. but their pitching had a great day to day. And hopefully that's not the case for the next four days because this Los Angeles team is going to be a problem. The Diamondbacks have seven games against them in the month of May and need to figure out a way to generate some offense here really quickly. But like I said, we will be back tomorrow with another postgame show.
Starting point is 00:53:50 So make sure to join us for that because we'll be covering that post game. And again, did we have, did we get to all? of super chats there, Kevin? I believe we did. Yes, we did. Well, in regards to this Dodgers team, like I said, it's not like it's much must win, right? But this is kind of like that road trip that the Diamondbacks did do decent on. They came out of it three and three. But as they headed off to do battle with the Mets in New York and with the Phillies and Philadelphia, with the way that they were performing against, you know,
Starting point is 00:54:22 the race and some other teams, this is that this was. concerning, right? And now you look ahead at May, you look at their schedule, and their schedule continues to be concerning this month. Cardinals coming up. Winters of five straight. Not even, not even on my radar.
Starting point is 00:54:43 Oh, well, not even slightly concerned with Well, we should be. The Cardinals are the least of my worries. The Diamondbacks have seven with the Dodgers, three with the Giants. They have, yeah, three with the Cardinals. But then again, You know, like they close out the month against the nationals who have been playing good baseball.
Starting point is 00:55:01 You know, the pirates have been pathetic. They literally have fans and ushers fighting each other in the stands out there. Things are falling apart for the pirates. People are furious and already tired of watching that team. But Paul Skeens is still very good at baseball. I'm sure we'll catch him in that series. But yes, your Cardinals have been playing good baseball. And, you know, again, a lot of NL West action this month.
Starting point is 00:55:24 So this is just, I guess, approve it. period of time for the Diamondbacks. Things do get a little easier in the month of June. They pretty much catch the Padres, the Mariners, who have been playing some good baseball. But they have Marlins, they have White Sox, they have Rockies, they have Blue Jays, they have Reds, they have Braves. They have lots of games in June to maybe catch back up here.
Starting point is 00:55:48 But this stretch is important, especially this initial test here, these four games against the Dodgers. And when you look at what the Dodgers are doing offensively, their team has been pretty incredible this season, right? The Dodgers, like I said, Freddie Freeman has been incredible with runners in scoring position. He right now is hitting 362 with a 1.148 OPS. Otani is at 300, basically, is at 299 with an 0.031 OPS.
Starting point is 00:56:15 And then, of course, you have Heung Song Kim, who was recently called up, who's currently hitting 417. So the Dodgers just continue to find some amazing players that are contributing to their team and putting up some numbers. And that's what the Dodgers always do. But, of course, we will be there tomorrow for that game. In the meantime, you can follow us on Twitter. I'm at Kapp underscore K-Map with a K. Keb is at Kev-O posts.
Starting point is 00:56:42 Of course, our show is at Ph&X underscore D-Backs. But as always, all roads lead to at Ph&X underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. who says high song Derek okay sorry for my mispronunciation I'm not very good with names as you know I mispronounce a lot of things on this show including milk so that's nailed it did I nail it that time my my usage of that word is as consistent as the Diamondbacks offense right now do you want to do we have the the beard tracker in here do you want to throw your stupid little beard tracker up there it didn't really change yeah good
Starting point is 00:57:22 I don't like, he did that without asking me, and I'm furious still to this day. Also, real quick, while we're here and I had the opportunity, who said it in the chat? So I feel like legally I'm allowed to bring it into the courtroom here. No. Why do the Cardinals randomly own Paul Skeens? Fun fact for you, Derek? Who, you're not, don't feed into this. No, it's a fun.
Starting point is 00:57:41 I have a stat for you. Shane about the Mariners. I have a fun stat. The chat loves stats, and this is a quirky little stat. Paul Skeins has five career starts versus the Cardinals. He is 0 and 4 against. the Cardinals. Paul Skeens. I don't know why. I don't know who. I don't know how, but the man can't solve the birds. You get it all out of your system. That was it. You're good? All right. I thought you
Starting point is 00:58:02 would appreciate the stat. I do. I do. I do appreciate the stat. But I also don't, I'm not in the mood for it. I'm not in mood for your positivity over there after watching the Diamondbacks lose by a score seven to one today. So, but Lawrence loved it. Lawrence has stat it up. So got to give the people what they want. I do appreciate you guys so much. for stopping by today. Like I said, I appreciate your time, especially after a loss like this. I know it's not always fun talking about this,
Starting point is 00:58:28 but again, hopefully what we can do is get the Diamondbacks going here in this series against the Dodgers because, boy, it would be great to see a great showing. And again, not an easy task for Brandon fought there in game one against Yamamoto. So we'll see what he can do and we'll see what the Diamondbacks offense can get going. But again, we appreciate you guys so much for your time. Until tomorrow, I want you guys. to have a wonderful evening.
Starting point is 00:58:54 Don't worry about the location of the cactus light at all. We'll turn that bad boy on tomorrow, hopefully. Of course, behave yourselves. That's the most important thing. I know you're not going to. I know you're not going to listen to me anyway, but I do appreciate your time. I know it's your most valuable commodity,
Starting point is 00:59:07 so thank you again. So much for sharing it with Kevin and I. We will see you tomorrow. And until then, again, behave yourselves and remember kids. Baseball is fun, but it is so much more fun when you don't have a four-game series with the Dodgers looming.
