Well, the Arizona Diamondbacks dropped today's game to the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of six to five, despite another impressive outing from Merrill Kelly and another late inning rally from this team.
We have more on this loss and why I have to take Kevin to lunch at Circle K in about 30 seconds. Don't you go anywhere?
That's terrible music. I hate every time we hear that. But come on in. Welcome in to another edition of the P. H&X Diamondbacks podcast right here on PHNX. My name is Derek Montia.
occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX.
I got my guy, large, intimate Kevin Thomas,
who I hate and is a traitor on the ones in twos today.
And understandably so.
This was a heartbreaking loss for the Diamondbacks,
which I have said probably use that phrase entirely too often
when talking about Arizona Diamondbacks losses.
But this one truly sucked like so many of them have sucked.
This is the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast, of course,
presented by our friends of Bet365 and our friends over at GameTime.
Go download that Bet365 app right now.

game time you'll get $20 off your first purchase using code PHNX and yes you guys welcome in
diamondbacks lose today by a score of six to five uh j cutty says kev not allowed to talk for the
first five minutes today that's understandably so one gentleman on twitter was already blaming me
for making a bet saying that because i made a bet is the reason why the diamondbacks lose but uh groundhog
Mama says, we had the hits today. We absolutely did, but could not get timely hit. And that,
those timely hits obviously did not come until that eighth inning, which was an incredible rally.
And you got to give the Diamondbacks credit for the fact that it really doesn't feel like they're
ever truly out of a game. The problem right now seems to be that once they have a lead, even if they
gain that lead late, can the bullpen protect it? And today, the answer was no. Justin Martinez returns,
and he did not have himself a good outing.
And of course, this is why we end up here.
It's not all solely on Justin Martinez.
The bats were fairly quiet today.
But you got to give credit where credit is due.
Merrill Kelly was outstanding for this team today.
Maybe went out there one inning too many.
But again, with the way that this bullpen has been performing,
can understand Tori Lavalow's decision to try to get as much as he could out of Merrill.
I think he was at 87 pitches there in the seventh inning.
so it's understandable with the day he was having to let him continue to go out there and pitch.
Merrill threw a great mix of pitches today.
His change up was absolutely outstanding.
He threw it quite a bit.
I believe that was the pitch he threw the most.
We do have his pitch chart from today.
And as you can see, his slider was sliding and going where it should be.
Just did a great job.
I mean, when I talk about a pitch mix here, he threw his change up 27% of the time,
cutter 26%, slider 16%, fastball 15%.
sinker 12% and he even threw a curveball four times.
So the man was dialed in today with his mix of pitches.
He got himself 16 whiffs and again, maybe just stayed in for one inning too many.
He kind of lost control there a bit in the seventh inning.
That's where he ends up giving up his runs besides that first run that he gave up early on.
And his line doesn't look exactly as clean as it should.
He ends up going six innings, giving up six hits.
he gives up four earned runs, walked one, and struck out six.
So I guess we'll light up that strikeout meter because his six strikeouts today were enough to at least give the Diamondbacks a chance to win.
And this was a very low-scoring affair.
The Diamondbacks do get a late lead there and they turn things over to their bullpen.
Of course, Jalen Beaks comes into the game in the seventh inning.
He has a clean inning, just one inning pitch, no hits, no runs, no strikeouts, no walks.
but Justin Martinez did not have a good day to day.
He went out there and he absolutely struggled with his pitches.
I mean, he just didn't really seem like he was confident.
He did reach his, you know, Velo was up, which is good.
So if there was any concern about his Velo,
his sinker was hitting 100 miles per hour on the regular maxed out at 101.
He had, he averaged 100 miles per hour on his sinker.
His four seam fastball also hit 101 miles per hour.
that average 99 miles per hour today.
But he just failed to really get anything.
He got three whiffs on his, you know, splitter.
But outside of that, you really could tell that he was struggling a little bit there.
And again, this is a big situation for him to be put into in his first return.
But, you know, some of his balls, his forcing fastball were high and outside of the zone.
Inside, I don't think he landed a single forcing fastball in the zone in his outing today.
his splitter was way outside of the zone as well so he just wasn't really fooling anybody and when he did throw that sinker he did he he hit the zone a couple of times with the zinker but he just he was really struggling with his command in his return today hopefully that's something that we see get back on track because just to martinez obviously was it's a big it's a big return we needed him back the bullpen needs him back but right now of course you know they didn't have his finest
day for sure. The Diamondbacks overall, again, are at 26 and 26. They are dangerously close to
dropping below 500. And as we're going to update here shortly, we definitely have a, you know,
some things to look at when you're looking at the standings and how quickly the Diamondbacks
are falling, falling right now out of this race. They've lost a lot of baseball games lately,
quite frankly, and the Diamondbacks can't really afford to do that.
with how good this NL West is.
They lost, of course, two out of three to the Dodgers.
Now they've lost two.
They've lost basically four out of their last six or five games,
four of their last five.
And things don't look any better right now for them tomorrow.
At least Halsley got work today.
Ryan Halsley did a lot of work against the Diamondbacks late.
So maybe he won't be available.
And then as we're going to talk about,
they close out the month here against some teams that they absolutely should be able
to close this, you know, the year out again.
against and and or excuse me the month out again someone's ringing my doorbell so uh i i often get
confused when things are happening and i can't make the words come out of my mouth correctly but
uh yeah they'll close they could close out the month here strong with the opponents that they have
but if they don't uh they don't not only are they going to be in a very bad position but they will
have failed to capitalize on playing some weaker opponents here after really after really having a
great you know uh great opportunity to to still be in this race in the n l west and again
It's May, not going to panic, not going to overreact.
However, I will say that if I would have told you on May 24th,
the Diamondbacks were going to have a defensive starting outfield consisting of
Lordus Gurriel Jr., Tim Tawa and Randall Gritchick,
you might have asked me back in March, what the hell happened?
How did we get here?
I mean, today was definitely a day where they gave a lot of guys off.
And to be fair, Randall Gritchick was outstanding for the Diamondbacks and his return to St. Louis
today.
So I do not, I do not, you know, feel like that was a bad, you know, start, obviously.
Things went that way.
But really with the offensive struggles lately, the Diamondbacks are, you know,
blowing some of these good outings from their starting pitchers.
And Merrill Kelly, again, outside of that seventh inning, maybe if the Diamondbacks have a lead,
they pull them at that point.
Maybe they don't.
Maybe you still don't trust this bullpen.
I don't know.
I just think that it's being, I'm as frustrated, I think, as the rest of you of watching this team.
the fact that they were able to come back and then have Justin Martinez blow this lead there.
Late is heartbreaking for this team.
You know, they capitalize on some big mistakes from a very good defensive St. Louis Cardinals' team.
We spoke about it when we did our preview, but they led the league,
or they still probably lead the league in outs above average.
However, you know, in the eighth inning, they were not sharp.
And the Diamondbacks managed to take a five to four lead in a game where their offense wasn't doing
anything. So, of course,
Killer Rex in the chat, he says, if you're
someone saying not to panic, you're just a
lovolo apologist. No, that's not the case. I'm saying if you're
not to panic because it's May 24th, KillerX, and I don't know if you
know baseball, but baseball doesn't wrap up until September 30th.
That's a long time away from now with a lot of games to play, right?
So I don't think that there's a need to panic. However, that
could change really quickly here because the diamondbacks do have some games against weaker opponents like
I said and if they fail to win those series, if they fail to win against the weaker teams in baseball
right now, then yeah, maybe maybe maybe by June we start to panic. Maybe, you know, maybe even you can
panic as honestly as early as you want. You can panic right now because that's what you want to do. I mean,
it's kind of like the narrative of a lot of people. They almost, I've seen.
this tweet. I've seen people say this multiple times, and I'm sure it's from some of you right here in
the chat today. That tweet, or at least that the common thought is, is that I want the Diamondbacks
to lose so that Tori Lavallo gets fired, right? You're actively rooting against the team you're
supposed to be a fan of just so the manager gets fired to prove a point that you feel like the manager
is a bad manager. Maybe the case. I don't know really how in a game like today, when you bring back
Justin Martinez and you put him in into a high leverage situation, especially in the eighth inning.
This wasn't the ninth inning. This wasn't, you know, another time during the game. This was a crucial
point and that reliever blows it. Do we do we not blame it on the reliever? Do we not ever blame it
on the performance of the players in the game playing the game, especially when you put your best
available start or reliever out there? I don't know. I don't know. But I will say that that is a little
a low-opining rant incoming. No, I mean, I will say that there were some mistakes made,
and today, especially there was a big mistake made that I don't even think people agree with
me on. So we're going to talk about the defense. We're going to talk about the offense.
Actually, we can just talk about the defense right now. I mean, basically, that huge mistake that
I was referring to happened there in the eighth inning, and it's with the runner that took the lead
in the game. It was with, I believe it was, excuse me, Burleson, who was on second base. I went back and
watch this play a few times. I'm going to say that, that, you know, in a game that's tied,
in a game that's that tight late, you might want to get the lead runner rather than getting
the easy out at first. Now, I will say that Gino probably made that choice in the decision,
or that decision in the moment because it didn't really look like he was going to maybe be able
to get Burleson at second. But they had Cattel over on the other side of second base. They had Jerry
P backing up the play right there. And it did feel like they could have gotten the lead runner. That
runner goes on to score on the ensuing at bat when Jordan Walker hits the RBI single and the
redbirds take the lead. So that was one of those risky plays where I feel like if Gino makes it,
we're still sitting here saying what a dumb play or Gino, Gino throws it over to a second and
they don't get that out. They don't get Burliss in there. Then you're sitting here saying,
what a bonehead play. So, uh, but piece of Yoshi says a good throw beats him. I think you're
referring to Josh Naylor throwing from first over to third base after, uh,
after they did throw and get the out at first.
And yeah, I mean, that was just a critical moment to kind of cut down the lead runner.
That lead runner ends up scoring.
Diamondbacks down six to five, right?
But again, the Cardinals had already tied it at that point.
So this isn't, this wasn't like the moment of giving up the game.
This was just, I think, you know, that right now, this was a mistake that they could have,
could have potentially kept that runner from scoring, right?
But like, yeah, I don't know.
Roger Bessions is here.
He's not talking about a football slider.
He's saying Lavello goes right to J-Mart decisions and uncertainties.
Yeah, I mean, I don't really know what the right move is there.
I mean, do you go to Shelby Miller?
Do you go to somebody else?
I haven't checked into who was available today.
But again, going to Justin Martinez upon returning like this,
maybe it was too big of a moment.
Maybe you wanted to bring him in like they did with.
I believe it was Ginkle, who kind of got at least some lower leverage,
but still Ginkle's always been brought into games even since he's returned,
that were kind of big moments.
But, you know, you kind of get his feet wet before you go in and put him into this high leverage situation.
I don't know, though.
I know Lopez, as seasons of peaks and valleys agree with J. Mark coming in, sadly, he got bit.
And yeah, I don't.
I think a lot of fans probably wanted to see J. Mark come into this game.
And, you know, of course, that just didn't go their way today.
like, Thunder says, man, four L's in a row.
Oh, Kevin. Kevin is allowed to talk now, by the way, according to Jake Huddy.
Thunder says, man, four else two outings.
The starter stayed in one inning too many.
It's a great point.
And I think that once again, that's a reflection of not believing in your bullpen
and not thinking you have the guys in the pen that can get the job done.
You're trying to squeeze as much as you can out of your starter.
I mean, it's not like they're pushing them far beyond 100 pitches.
Today, Merrill hit 100 pitches exactly.
So if that inning goes differently, Merrill gets seven innings pitched,
he doesn't give up more than one run in the game,
and this looks like a masterpiece by Merrill.
But instead, you know, he did stay in a little bit too long.
And in that case, that's an instance where maybe again,
got to maybe blame the manager if you want to.
But also, if it goes the other way, you pull Merrill out,
and Beaks comes in and doesn't have a good outing,
doesn't get one inning clean work, then all of a sudden you're saying, why didn't you leave Merrill in the game?
So all sorts of ways to question, especially in a game where you lost one by one run.
This one, though, again, the offense was fairly listless.
Both teams, I guess you could give credit to both starters here, both Kelly and Libitor, both had an outstanding game,
and both kept their opposing team fairly quiet throughout the entire game until they left, of course, once Merrill kind of got slow there, got late in the game.
and he also kind of faltered.
But we are going to talk about the offense not really doing much until the eighth inning
and why we couldn't just get a little bit more out of them.
But, of course, we will do that on the other side of this break.

libitur had an outstanding outing against the diamond backs he was able to base
basically hold them completely useless today.
He went out there and pitched seven innings, allowed one earned run, gave up six hits to
the Diamondbacks, struck out four. And of course, that one home run was off of the bat
of one. Randall Gritchick, who solos in the fifth, so hits a solo home run in the fifth inning.
And he hits R. Sanderson Ford deep drive of the game. It was 401 feet, 109.1 miles per hour
off the bat. And this was a fun way. This was a fun, fun home run.
this happened while they were in the middle of showing an interview of Randall Gritchick from
the pregame show. They were basically talking about the fact that he made his Major League debut
with the Cardinals on April 28, 2014. That was against the Brewers. And then while they were
showing that interview, they cut back to his live at bat and he hits this one, 401 feet. It was his
second home run in the year. And it's actually his first as an opposing player at Bush. So it's his
first time homering, not against the Cardinals, but at Cardinals Stadium. But the snake's
offensive woes just absolutely continued in this one. Cotel Marte, he's still hot. Heraldo Pertomo is
very hot. These guys had themselves a great day. But like Groundhog Mama said earlier, the big problem
is hitting with runners in scoring position and getting those timely hits. Cotel Marte was two for four,
no RBI. Pardomo, three for four today. No RBI. Pardomo is currently hitting 309 with an 887 OPS.
He's just been outstanding.
He's been outstanding.
But unfortunately today, Perdomo was not our risk king.
He couldn't get it done with runners in scoring position,
though he did have some very, very timely hits today.
And again, it's about getting on base.
It's about providing the team of that opportunity.
Someone right now that isn't getting on base,
someone that isn't doing much, continues to be Jordan Lawler.
Now, I want to take a step back and say,
Jordan Waller continues to be incredibly oppressive defensively, right?
We've seen him, including today,
make some outstanding plays out there on the diamond.
But unfortunately, Lawler still does not have a hit this season.
He was 0 for three today.
He has an 071 OPS.
And it's hard to continue to think that the Diamondbacks need to have Lawler in their lineup
when he's not being productive and not providing anything besides his defense.
He is providing guys with a day off.
And of course, you know, with some of the defensive struggles the Diamondbacks had early this season.
So it's a great thing to see him out.
there playing such good defense and providing that as a solid backup pretty much anywhere he plays right but
a piece of yosha yeah the four pitch uh was was kind of brutal uh and i don't know i'm saying this
with with all kindness in my heart i think that the diamondbacks right now need to possibly you know
send jordan waller back down so he can continue to get regular bats and can continue to work on on his
is hitting because defensively he sound he is absolutely going to provide this team
with great defense. It's just a matter of him figuring out his bat. But right now, he's not doing that.
It's hard because you look at the Reno Aces roster. Of course, like a good neighbor, the snake farm is there.
But the problem with the snake farm is that when you go to it, a lot of guys end up looking much better down there than they do when they come up.
And again, I talked about this so many times. Even I'm sick of hearing me talk about it.
But it's just a matter of the PCL. It's a matter of Reno. It's a matter of hitting it home.
there guys can get back on track guys can get good offensively just how how does it translate over
to a major league level hitting major league pitching at major league ballparks and not the PCL right so
that's a big part of it ildemar vargas is another guy that's been doing well for this team and um again has
some like major actual major league experience i don't know if the diamondbacks are going to look to
him but he's one of those guys that uh you could kind of say like tray mancini in the organization just a
little bit like he isn't you know again he's not um not necessarily a guy that like you
feel like he's going to come up and take over a position but like based on their age and their
experience they are there in in reno for that backup for that for that reason and again i don't know
i don't know if vargas could come up and and have a better season uh hitting right now than luller but
I do feel like, you know, maybe, maybe there's some versatility there that will allow Vargas to have a little bit better of a season offensively than Lawler is happening.
Again, things aren't great, but hopefully he can get it turned around before that has to happen.
I think much like what I said earlier, I know sometimes we get negative, right?
We don't necessarily want to root against the player, but you also want something to happen faster than what we're seeing happen, right?
And that's it.
And, and, yeah, piece of Yoshi says, Derek tried to tell y'all he wasn't going to hit the ground running.
I tried so hard to temper expectations.
I tried.
And now people want him DFA'd and traded and all sorts of jokes that they have.
And, of course, drastic, being drastic about his development.
But Cade Richards is right here.
Lawler isn't ready.
They are doing him a disservice, bringing him up and playing him once every three days.
And there it is.
And that's, again, that's the reason why you leave a guy like him.
in Reno.
But that eighth inning for the Diamondbacks was spectacular.
And again, I know it's like, it's sad to talk about now, right?
Like now that we know they lost, you don't really want to go back and relive necessarily
the eighth inning.
But you got to give credit where credit is due.
The Diamondbacks again were down.
Their bats weren't working.
They were down four to one.
I know many of you like myself probably felt like this one was a wrap.
And honestly, I'll even say this.
They definitely needed some help from the Cardinals, making some bad defensive plays in order for that big eighth inning to happen.
So as much as I want to give them credit for their offense, getting things rolling against the Cardinals' bullpen and having things go their way, it was literally things kind of luckily going their way and some bad defensive plays by a Cardinals team that, like I said before, came into the series leading the league in outs above average.
They've been incredibly good defensively.
It's the reason why they currently came into this game at a 28 and 23 record.
And yeah, I mean, luckily the Diamondbacks had the ball bounced their way.
They had some things go their way in order for them to not only be able to muster up a comeback,
but take the lead there in the eighth inning.
It's just in the bottom of the eighth.
You know, things don't go there with Justin Martinez.
I do give a lot of credit there to Cattel Marte, who continues to just really hit the ball hard,
hit the ball well this season, two for four.
Kattel has a 979 OPS this season, and that's just, that's just outstanding.
But Randall Gritchick, he is a guy that, again, when you talk about playing time, does not get
enough playing time.
And today he got the start over Corbyn Carell there in right field.
Randall Gritchick went two for four with a run score.
He had two RBI.
He hit that big home run, which was our Sanderson deep drive of the game.
And for all the reasons I've listed, Randall Gritchick is our Kingsnake for today's game.
I think it was a really fun return for him to St. Louis.
And also a good reminder, like I said earlier here, that this man does not play baseball often enough for the Diamondbacks.
I don't know where to get guys playing time sometimes.
And I know it's situational.
I think that that he definitely suffers from being brought into games for pitch hitting situations and other scenarios like that.
But I don't know.
Sean says the eighth inning is the epitome of the season, rally to give us hope, and then immediately give it up.
And yeah, I mean, I hate to say this, but this is very true.
when the Diamondbacks had the lead, I said to myself, oh, well, they still have to get through two
innings, right? Like so there wasn't confidence in me as a person that covers this team. There
probably wasn't confidence much in the hearts of people in that bullpen. And unfortunately,
that translated over to what we saw. I still think that that mistake in the eighth inning was
was a mistake, but I think that that's debatable. Outside of that, really, this was a day where
the Diamondbacks probably should have had some more runs than even what they were able to score, right?
They did put together some things in the ninth inning.
That was kind of fun, but it still led nowhere and the Diamondbacks still end up losing this game,
six to five.
The only plus, like I said earlier, is that Ryan Halsley had to throw a whole bunch of pitches.
Rado Pardomo had probably the greatest at bat I've ever seen Pardomo have.
And I know that people might not feel that way about this.
It's fine.
it's my feelings, it's my thoughts, it's my opinions.
But I will say that this would bat against Brian Helsley.
I think we have the, do we have the pitch chart image?
Yeah, or yeah, here's here is the ball count.
And as you can see here, this was a 10 pitch at bat against Brian Helsley
that ultimately ended in Pardomo walking and getting off, getting on to first base.
And like, I don't know, man.
I still think back, we talked about it time and time again,
about when our friend Steve Zinsmeister interviewed Pardomo.
and asked him what he missed most about being away from the game when he was injured.
And his response was being down 02 in the count.
And that's just a real sicko response,
but it just goes to show how much Ferdomo does have frog blood,
does not fear those big moments,
is cold-blooded and is our favorite guy, Jerry P.
I could give him the Kingsnake every single game,
even when he goes 0-4.
I really could.
Noah Lopez says taking Helzley to a 10-pitch walk is crazy good discipline.
Yeah.
No kidding, especially when that man is throwing the ball at 103 miles per hour right in front of you.
He's of Yoshi when he fouled off that heater a foot above the ground.
Yeah, like that was insane.
That was insane.
Like Perdomo is just so locked in right now.
And again, I mean, this was one of those games where they really could use some contributions from guys that have been doing better lately.
Like Moreno, Gabby Moreno went 0 for four today.
He's been very hot.
So that's unfortunate.
it. Tim Tawa also had another
4, 0 for 4 game today.
By the way, Tim Tawa, Pride of Mountain Ridge,
which is the high school that is currently right next to my daughter's junior high.
That's where we actually went for graduation the other night.
So that's a fun connection.
And my daughter, my daughter forbids me from saying go Ridge because she's going to go
to Sandra Day O'Connor, so I can't say any of that.
But shout out again to Randall Gritchick for being our Kingsnake today.
Great day for him.
Unfortunately, not a great day for Justin Martinez.
is and not necessarily the finest day for Merrill Kelly either.
Again, he got the Diamondbacks.
He gave the Diamondbacks plenty today, but he, again, just kind of came up a little short there in the seventh inning,
allowing those runs and putting the Diamondbacks down.
So Diamondbacks have to try to salvage the series tomorrow and hope that they do not get swept here by the Cardinals.
That would be probably absolutely awful for this team at this point.
And also we got our guy Kevin, who I don't know if you guys remember,
but me and this guy made a little bit of a bet.
So I guess we're going to have to settle that at some point here.
We'll talk about that on the other side of this break.
Don't you go anywhere.
You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show.
Of course, whatever the moment,
it is never ordinary late in a game for the Arizona Diamondbacks,
and it is never ordinary over at Bet365.
You can get down on live in-game betting like this.
And of course, if you feel like the Diamondbacks go up by a run and are going to blow it,
that would be a great time to do some live in-game betting and maybe bet on the opposition.
Head your bets emotionally.
I always say that.
Make sure if your team doesn't win that at least you win.
And Bet365 is a great place to do that.
Right now you can get down on the early payout offer for Major League Baseball games where you are a winner if your team goes up by five runs in a game, regardless of the outcome.
And that would be straight bets and parlay selections will be all marked as winners.
So do not miss out on the phone over at Bet365.
New customers can get $150 in bonus bets.
when you bet $5, win or lose.
All you got to do is sign up, use that code of PHNX365 when you do.

All right. And branded bills. Got to give a shout out to branded bills. We love their hats. I love their hats. I wore their hats all weekend long. And of course, I will continue to wear their hats. They are stretchy. They are light. They feature some incredible logos and designs. I really love the way that they make their hats that's very unique. And of course, if you are looking for some gear to make your brand stand apart from the crowd, look no further than branded bills. They have you covered with the best custom headwear. Start your order and their dedicated team will get, will help you create the exact custom apparel you need. They'll work on you with the logo. They'll work on.
you exactly the colors, everything you want. Of course, like I said, they make some wonderful hats over
there. They have partnerships with ASU, U of A as part of their campus collection. They also partner
with the Phoenix Suns. And let me tell you, I was still mad. I don't have my hands on that
gray sun's hat with a little cacti up there. But they're a local company from right here in Mesa,
Arizona. You can check them out over at brandedbills.com. You can use our code of BBPHNX for 10% off your
first order. That's BBPHNX for 10% off your first order. All right. Well, we got to take a look at the numbers
from this game. I know we probably don't want to, but of course, the runners in scoring position thing
is always going to bother us. And today, once again, it does. The Diamondbacks lose this one,
six to five to the Cardinals. They out hit the Cardinals, 12 to eight. Runners in scoring position,
Diamondbacks once again had plenty of opportunities to score, not hits at a time. I think they brought
it up on the broadcast, like, you know, timely hitting, having those hits come when their most
important seem to shy away from this team or I should say this team shies away from those big
moments maybe maybe not everybody has frog blood maybe only perdomo has frog blood can we get a
transfer can we get some i don't know can we can we get some transfusions going on in the clubhouse
i know we might need to get the medical team involved here i know there might be some complications with
what his actual blood type is but i mean maybe just a blood brother situation where we can like you know
prick fingers and like do like that with perdomo i don't know
What can we do to increase the clutch factor of this team?
Because we really need to do something.
Happy Saturday to you, Daniel Berry Sports.
Glad to have you here.
Glad to have all you guys here.
Not glad to have Kevin here.
I'm kind of already sick of Kevin.
He hasn't even said two words.
But let's take a look at those numbers once again,
presented by our friends at Desert Financial.
Diamondbacks had five extra base hits to the Cardinals, too.
And then Diamondbacks expected batting average,
317 to the Cardinals, 262.
the Diamondbacks basically beat the Cardinals in every conceivable way here
besides the actual final score and maybe that risk percentage,
but had more opportunities than the Cardinals with runners in scoring position
and should have gotten the job done.
Kevin, you want to pop in here now because we have to talk about
the fact that this bet is actually over.
Legit.
Yes, we do.
Background that you have back there, by the way.
We already talked about your pictures off air.
But I don't care.
I hate you and I hate the Cardinals and I hate everything right now.
I hate the Gateway Arch.
I hate St. Louis-style pizza.
I hate...
Keep it coming.
I don't know.
I don't know what other things from the Lou.
The Lou? That's stupid.
It's a stupid name.
It sounds like you're talking about a toilet.
Yeah.
I'm just slashing.
Yeah, I'll let the loser talk happen.
This is loser talk.
This is what happens when you lose.
If you were talking about a victory, it would be different.
And you wouldn't be doing all this.
this and that's okay Derek.
Yeah, no, it's fun.
I am very happy that I did win this bet because now you owe me a lunch from Circle
K and you have to eat some hot wings on the stove.
And I lost my wallet last night.
So that lunch is going to come in very clutch.
Oh, my gosh, you've lost your wallet last night.
Oh, well, maybe your wallet got stolen by a good Samaritan here that was
sick of listening to you support St. Louis.
But I don't know, I don't know anything about that.
I don't know anything about that.
But I will, I will say that, yes, I do know at the very least that despite what you pick out is your four items for lunch for Circle K, it's not going to break my bank because Circle K has incredible prices on all of their goods.
What I'm not excited about is that part of this bet, and I feel like I was kind of scammed into this part, is the is the now that I have to eat chicken wings on this show, you know I hate eating messy, messy food in public.
You know I don't like to do it at ball games or even at restaurants.
you know, like I have to be very drunk after a win in order for me to just get sloppy with chicken wings in public.
I'll do it privately.
I'll do it privately in my home.
I will do it in the sanctity of my home.
But nowhere where a television camera could potentially be on me without my knowledge, just George Costanziing me.
And now, now I have to eat hot wings on this show.
Is that right?
Is that how this goes?
At least one.
At least one.
I think you really weren't, you really, you were less scammed into it as to more so, like,
Like you procrastinated eating a hot wing on the show for so long that now the chat saw this is an excellent vehicle to get you to eat a hot wing.
And it's kind of your own fault.
I don't.
I hate it.
I hate it.
Like if you would just let them order you hot wings that one night and you ate one, it would have been a wash.
We would have had to pick another punishment.
I realized I need to start downplaying the things I hate on this show because it's only going to antagonize this group.
of absolute monsters. The next thing you know, they're doxing us again so that they can send us
food at the address of our office. And I'm like, it's a weird, it's a weird thing because I'm
kind of okay with them doxing me to send me stuff. But I don't know. I will say this. I,
again, hate you and a lot of things right now. But kudos on the win. I do think that you guys
have an exciting, fun young team this year, and they did do the thing against the Diamondbacks, for sure.
Like I said earlier, I think this was an underestimated team this season.
You said it, but also at one point when we were looking at the calendar, we were like,
yeah, let's just get through that 13-game stretch of those NLS teams,
and then, you know, you got yourself a nice little stretch against teams you should be able to beat.
Not so fast.
Exactly.
And also, Derek, I wanted to bring up RA's comment.
formerly known as cactus light, formerly known as RA.
Oh, tea raps?
Are we going hard on tea?
Well, see,
tea rabs aren't messy.
I feel like I'm getting out easy by eating tea.
It's actually,
yeah, it's actually a self-contained little mess that actually is not messy.
I would eat tea rabs publicly at a ballpark, honestly.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Tea rabs, toasted raviolis, right?
That's what we're talking about here for the people that might not be familiar with your St.
St. Louis slang.
Yeah, T-Rabs, toaster rhaps.
raviolis. I think like sometimes oven baked, sometimes deep fried, but pretty good. Pretty good.
I was some marineros sauce. Also, Derek, I wanted to ask you more about the wrist runners and
position thing because it felt like today watching this game, there was like I've been back
to the score and everything. Like every car has had runner in a scoring position,
I was maybe I'm biased, but I was confident that like a run was going to be scored. And like
when the debacks had runners in scoring position, at what point is it like, like you said earlier,
Do we start questioning why the players can't come through in these moments?
What can, what, what even contributes to that?
I don't know.
It's baffling, right?
Like game after game.
It kind of is.
They fail to capitalize.
It's specifically like the fact that, you know, you see them shrink up sometimes in those moments.
You see them have bad at bat.
It's like, Perdomo's at bat there in the ninth inning against Helsley.
That, that excites me.
That titillates me because that's what I want to see out of those guys.
That's what I want to see. I want to see you going into an at-bat against one of the best closers in the game and being like, F you, I'm not scared of you. And I'm going to get over there. I don't know how, but I'm going to get on that base over there. And like that's the kind of attitude that Perdomo has. I mean, again, he doesn't always have, he doesn't always have perfect nights, right? Like he was just over, what, over four, over five last night. Right. And that was a night where I really thought, I thought strongly that Perdomo was going to be that guy in several months.
moments in last night's game and last night's loss.
Uh, but again, today he, he had that.
He had that at least that courage, that strength, that confidence in himself.
And I, I don't know.
I mean, that's something that this team has kind of always had up until they made the
world series.
And then it's felt like the last two years that instead of this team having this
clutch factor, instead of this team stepping up into those big moments and not caring
about how bright the, the spotlight is, you, you don't feel like you're getting the same,
you know, the same performance out of them, the same.
the same kind of attitude out of them.
I don't know.
I still think back to when Tori was trying so carefully to manipulate the idea of expectations
and trying to change it into a standard, right?
And a standard makes sense,
but a standard also kind of has to be set when you have a culture of winning,
like a continued culture, a continued standard.
The Cardinals, for instance, are a team that always find ways to be good, right?
Like the Cardinals have a bad year.
maybe two bad years.
You never see the Cardinals turn into like the worst team in the league for an extended
period of time, right?
They're one of those teams that they do have a good, it's a good organization.
They have great fans.
They make good decisions.
And even when they don't like the Aeronado thing probably has not turned out to be the
best decision, right?
But at the same time, he was one of the hottest players in the league when they went after
him.
It made sense that they were trying to take what they'd already built and add that superstar,
add that thing that's going to get them to the next level.
you know um but like again the same that that's the the diamond backs aren't that right now and and the
idea that they're trying to set a standard has to come with establishing uh some sort of culture there first
right tory feels like he's establishing it feels like that's what he's doing when he's talking about
setting that standard but again you can't like try to ignore the elephant in the room the elephant in the
room is that you guys had a team of guys that made it to the world series that had no business being there
and now you got to figure out a way to continue to motivate them and
continue to get them to believe in themselves, regardless of the ups and downs of baseball.
Because again, you're going to, you're going to have people that feel the way a killer
rex feels in the chat and feel that it was a fluke that they made it to the World Series.
And yeah, he says here, LeVolo sets the standard and that standard is mediocrity.
I just think setting a standard was difficult at the time because of what he was trying to do.
I feel like when you start as a manager or you're moving along and finding success, that's when you could talk about setting a standard and wanting to achieve a certain standard.
But again, just because you made it to the World Series one year doesn't necessarily mean that you are now going to be that successful playoff team every single year.
It's hard.
You got to figure out a way to manage those expectations.
He tried.
And I kind of didn't necessarily agree with it at the time.
I probably mocked it a little bit.
but, you know, it's because it's just, it's, it's this weight on this back of this team.
And it happened again this year, right?
Like we had an amazing starting rotation.
The addition of Corbyn Burns really turned some heads when it came to the Diamondbacks
and made people feel like this team was once again going to be a big threat in the NL West,
going to be a big contender this year.
And the fact is, is that they are mediocre.
They have played mediocre baseball.
They've played probably subpar baseball for the last month now,
despite having some good stretches and some good wins in there,
they are 26 and 26 ball club.
They are 500.
That's,
that's,
that's mediocrity at its finest right there.
You can't really get around that.
I will just say,
though, that this is,
uh,
I,
wait,
hold on.
What,
what excuse,
can we ban killer wrecks from the chat?
I'm kind of tired of seeing his,
as tweets in here because I don't really think I'm making excuses to expect.
I just said I disagreed with him and thought that the standard thing was kind of
bull crap.
But hey, again, you make whatever thing you want to make, right?
Like whatever narrative you want to make, please go ahead and make it.
I just don't want to listen to it anymore.
The fact is that this team is playing below what they should be playing.
This is a good baseball team with good players on it.
And right now, these players are not performing at the way they should, right?
You can blame Tori.
Absolutely. That's fine.
And there's plenty of losses to do that on.
I'm still on the fact that the Diamondbacks keep putting in guys that they expect to step up
and, you know, solidify them.
themselves in these roles and they can't find those guys. And when they go to the next guy that's
pitching well, that guy doesn't play well. And again, that's a whole thing with the, that's a whole
thing with the bullpen, right? The bullpen is, is a problem. The offense right now, kind of a problem as
well, right? So I don't really know. The inconsistency from this team is incredible. Like you said,
Kevin, the fact that they're just not clutch in those big moments. The runners in scoring position
thing continues to be a huge issue for this team.
Right now, I haven't checked where they currently stand,
but they no longer are the team with the worst runners in scoring position
with a winning record because they don't have a winning record anymore.
So now here we sit in this position where the Diamondbacks look mediocre,
are mediocre and playing mediocre.
They have so many opportunities.
That's the thing that's crazy, is to see the amount of hits that they get in these games.
we looked at that series wrap up the series numbers from the Dodgers,
and you could see that the Diamondbacks out hit them and out add more home runs
and all of these statistical categories where if you were just looking at those numbers,
you would believe that the Diamondbacks won this series or won this game,
but they're not.
They're not winning these games.
They're not doing the thing that they're supposed to do.
And specifically, their weaknesses right now are hitting with runners in scoring position,
and they're bullpen.
You know, you, Zach Gallen,
wasn't great yesterday and that continues to also be a problem but you feel like at least in that game the
diamondbacks made a comeback at least in that game the diamondbacks had had somewhat of a shot just like
today they had an opportunity they were up late and their bullpen they're probably their their
reliever with the best stuff could not hold it so it starts to feel like no matter what the diamondbacks
really don't have the personnel at times to to be able to be a winning winning team right um let's see
there's Scott Macs says we need a new vision and voice.
I'm tired of Lavello's trite platitudes.
Well, I'll tell you, I don't know at what point that they potentially lose the clubhouse,
but I feel like right now that the Diamondbacks really still,
the players still really like playing for Tori.
And again, maybe that starts to happen.
Rumors had it that, you know, that's the way that things went with Brent Strom,
where Brent Strom kind of lost some of the pitchers and they weren't listening to him any longer.
So thus his coaching was not effective.
And again, they ended up kind of pinning that more on Strom than the players.
So, I mean, that's definitely a possibility.
And a lot of the stuff that Strong was saying as he left the organization is kind of like bearing out this season, right?
Yeah, it kind of is.
And it's starting to prove more and more that Brent Strom was not the problem here when it came to the problems with the pitching staff.
But I don't know.
I mean, Brian Kaplan is a guy that, again, has focused so much on biomechanics.
And yet, regardless, the team still has lost several pitchers to injury.
and it doesn't really feel like much has changed, right?
Like even with a new pitching coach,
it doesn't feel like much has changed.
We didn't want to see these numbers for our starting pitchers
and our relievers in the mud like they are.
At least the starters have gotten back to being, you know,
an average, you know, ERA as far as Major League Baseball is concerned.
The Diamondbacks bullpen continues to still be a bottom five bullpen.
And again, that's right now their biggest problem, their biggest problem.
So, but let's get over this.
And when I say like, let's try to stay positive, uh, killer X, that's to you.
It's because I still want to go watch the Diamondbacks, still want to have fun watching baseball.
And you can't really be, uh, at least doom and gloom just yet.
Uh, and again, we'll reserve that time.
You and I can have that caught conversation.
Maybe the middle of June will both get super doomy and gloomy together.
But, uh, we can't.
We can't even do that then because we have the pool takeover.
Let's give it until July 4th.
Can we give it until July 4th?
And then we'll talk about how much we want to be sad about this team.
Because July 3rd, we're all going to hang out at the at the chase field pool.
It's time for our catch and next pool party.
Thank you for some air horns.
Again, there is.
I'm going to go on my grocery list for Circle K, by the way.
I'll catch you on the other side, Derek.
Shut up.
Okay, go away.
Go away.
But Kevin's going to be there.
I'm going to drag Kevin out there.
I think he's still, Kevin said he can't swim, but I'm going to make him do a cannonball anyway.
It's a small pool.
He can stand up.
He's a large intimate man.
But I will tell you.
you July 3rd from 530 to 10 p.m.
We will be out there, Chase Field.
We have a great time.
We have the right field reserve, and we invite you to come out and join us.
And the PH&X crew and other diehards, Damon will be out there running amok.
There are very limited tickets, though.
And that ticket does include your ticket to the DeVax Nationals game and entrance into the pool.
It includes complimentary food and beverages during the entirety of the game.
And it also includes a free towel.
So make sure to definitely join us for that.
Again, tickets are limited.
if you have not got yours yet and you are interested in coming, come on over and join us.
Let's take a look at the N-Hell West standings because why not?
Let's make ourselves sad.
Even at 26 and 26, Diamondbacks are still only two, let's just say two wins behind the Padres.
Can we just say that?
I know it's like five losses, but let's just say two wins.
Rockies, they are, are we going to, when are we going to gray out the Rockies?
We should probably grow out the Rockies already, but Diamondbacks 26 and 26,
the Padres sit above them at 28.
21. Giants are at 30 and 21 and the Dodgers sit at top of the division currently at 32 and 19.
Again, this is probably the only reason why I'm still saying it's early.
You know, again, even though this division is very good, this division still has to play each other quite a bit.
And of course, anything can happen.
Diamondbacks right now, or excuse me, the Washington Nationals are currently beating the Giants in the top of the ninth inning by a score of three to nothing.
So hopefully that result stands today.
the Padres are also losing to the Atlanta Braves currently by the score of five to one.
And then the Dodgers take on the Mets tonight.
So hopefully the Mets can play, can ball out because we kind of need them to do so at this time.
They usually don't when we need them to.
We know how that works.
The Mets, though, they are one of the teams that are going to be there.
When you start, I think someone else brought it up in the chat earlier.
But when you start talking about wild card, you start talking about the playoffs and how the
diamondbacks are going to get to the postseason, you got to start
looking at some of these other teams that are right there, you know, right there now and are going
to be there later. And chances are it's going to be the St. Louis Cardinals team is going to be a part
of this. The Braves team is going to be a part of it. Like right now, the Phillies lead their division
and the Braves and the Mets are also both on the outside looking in. So that's a, it's just a
situation where you've got to start figuring out which teams are we going to beat? How are the
Diamondbacks going to get to a point where they have a better record of some of these teams, right?
And again, I know it's just cautioning that it's a series in May,
but the Diamondbacks don't play the Cardinals a lot this year.
And losing this series or maybe getting swept tomorrow could be a disaster
because this Cardinals team could be one of those teams vying for an NL wildcard spot at the end of the year.
We saw all things played out last year.
I know, we know.
We talked about it.
Every game counts.
It's the reason why some of you hate to hear me talk about it being early.
And I get it.
it's just again if you if you want to live your life in a glass half empty kind of way you could start
to count the diamondbacks out if you wanted to be you know definitely uh negative about it that's
there's there's lots of stuff to be negative about and with you know the teams that are playing good
baseball this year that are also going to be there looking for a wild card spot uh you can't
can't be losing to them cannot be losing to them but uh let's see kate richard says uh
And that's why the entire coaching staff needs to go piece of Yoshi.
What was that in regards to what did what did we do?
Oh, four extra innings and not a single goddamn run.
Yeah, four extra innings and not a single goddamn run.
Sorry about that.
Anyway, we have the updated probable pitchers for tomorrow.
Of course, Brandon Fought.
Hopefully you can get the job done here for the Diamondbacks.
Brandon Fought is seven and three this year.
Do we have that probable pitchers graphic there, Kevin?
Kevin died, Kevin disappeared.
Anyway, Brandon fought going up against in game three,
3.81 ERA this season.
He's currently 7.3 going up against Sunny Gray,
who has been not at his sharpest,
but 5 and 1 for the Cardinals this year, 4.02 ERA.
And yeah, he's, he has been a little off this year,
as piece of Yoshi says.
So that would be a great opportunity for the Diamondbacks
to get to one of their starting pitchers.
And also Brandon,
thoughts on the mound. So I don't know if there's anybody that I feel more confident about
pitching for this team this year. Maybe Corbin Burns. Corbin Burns has become very, very good
and has become the guy that the Diamondbacks expected him to be after signing that contract.
Meanwhile, big game Brandon, first pitcher Major League Baseball to seven wins and looking for his
eighth win there in game three against Sunny Gray. I will say that there's a couple of things
that has really impressed me about this Cardinals team, Kevin. And I know that Diamond
Backs fans probably hate to hear me give them any praise.
But this team, again, this has been playing some good baseball.
And when you talk about some of their numbers,
you talk about some of the performances from their guys.
You really can't say enough about what Brendan Donovan has been doing for the St.
Louis Cardinals currently slashing 320, 381, 829 this season.
He has 22 RBI, three home runs, three stolen bases.
He's just been incredibly good for the Cardinals.
And they have a few guys like that.
Are, were those guys, Kevin?
I know you're probably doing stuff, but were those guys expected to be as good as they've been?
I mean, Brendan Donovan, I think they said he's third in batting average right now, Major League Baseball.
Yeah, no, he's on fire right now.
I would say definitely not an expectation.
It kind of leads into what I said on our Friday show.
Is that?
Yeah, our last show about how, like, the expectations for this team were so low.
There's a lot of talent on the team, but it's like, what's the truth?
Is the ceiling that high?
I don't really think so.
But I think, like, a lot of players outperforming their expectations right now in this Cardinals team.
And they're doing it as a unit.
And that defense that that defense that, that defense that, that defense that, that, that's putting themselves in a position to compete this year.
Yeah.
And like I said earlier, those defensive mistakes that they made in the eighth inning, those were crazy.
Like, I would, with looking at the numbers of what they've done so far this year, I was not expecting that.
And again, it was not just one mistake, two fairly big mistakes that ended up allowing the Diamondbacks to get back in this.
game. No, yeah. And honestly, I was kind of surprised about the defensive mistake early in the
game on Jordan Walker double. Yeah. A lot of, you know, a record there. I'm kind of surprised.
That was kind of a noncharacteristic debacks defensive mistake as well on a somewhat routine
ball there. So yeah, kind of some strange defensive plays in this one overall, Derek.
But what did you think about the Gino play that I brought up? Do you agree with me or do you think
Gino was just smart for going over there to first? I don't know, Derek. I think I do think I lean to
agree with you on that one. I was kind of watching this one through the audio because I got
blacked out. I got blacked out. I got blacked out. So I was, I was listening through the audio,
so I didn't really have to make visuals on that one. I know. Never been blacked out of a Cardinals
game in Arizona before. That's rough. That is rough. That is rough. Oh, speaking of which,
I don't think anything was as egregious as what I saw the other day. Chris Gargiola posted a picture
on on Instagram of him getting blacked out from watching the game in the Dodgers press box.
That was unbelievable.
It was the TV in the press box and it was blacked out.
Crazy, crazy.
It shouldn't be this complicated.
It just shouldn't be.
It shouldn't be.
It should not be.
It's insane.
Like I think that there are there are things that we look back upon.
It was like a, there was a tweet where a guy had tweeted about,
eight years ago, something like,
I can't believe I can open my iPhone with my face.
This is the future of technology.
And he was like eight years and I sound like a caveman that discovered fire.
It's amazing how fast things can change.
And in baseball, one of the craziest, stupidest things about baseball are these blackout
rules.
And I mean, it's not just in baseball.
We had to deal with that back in the day with NFL.
I never got to watch the Arizona Cardinals here in town locally because they would always be blacked out.
there was some sort of rule where in order to show a home game they had to sell out and then
the cardinals home games never sold out so we never got to watch them locally uh these these rules are
crazy i can't believe that there's still things like that but i also still can't that this happens
in a in a baseball ballpark where the announcers are are in the booth and they can't see to be blacked out
trying to do a job also is this true what piece of yoshi says in the chat please pray for people in
Iowa blacked out.
That's true?
Yeah, that is true.
We were blacked out from watching Diamondbacks games in Las Vegas, by the way,
which I know people have brought up before as well.
So apparently, Las Vegas is kind of in a little bit of those spots as well.
I hate it.
I hate blackout rules.
And I hate the fact that any sport that's trying to grow has it hasn't figured out a way
to have their rights secured to a point where people that are paying for a product,
get that product regardless of where who's playing who right like the reason you're blacked out from
that cardinals game right is because they're playing the diamondbacks that's the reason why you were
blacked out and that's crazy you are an opposing fan that bought the package for the cardinals and you
are blacked out from watching your team simply because the team of the state you're you're living in
or currently residing in plays there it's dumb it's all dumb what's also dumb is these losses these losses
are dumb. You might not feel that way. You might not feel that way. You got no, they're
done. They are done. They are done. We talked about this. And ultimately, the bottom line is the bottom
line. And I got to, I got to keep the debacks primary focus. And the losses are silly.
The Cardinals probably should not have won today. Merrill Kelly had a great start. I thought,
honestly, stayed in a little too long. But it's easy to say that, right? Like if Merrill Kelly
stays in and gives them seven strong and then they just have to turn it turn it over to beaks for the
eighth and just a martinez for the ninth it looks like everything goes to plan it looks like everything
is solid and yay you know again the results are what determined really at the end of the day whether
the moves were the right moves or not right and today the diamond back's lost so you can't
really say the right moves were made especially bringing merrill kelly back out there because of how it went
however like i said if you bring jaylen beaks in jaylon beaks gives up three runs you sit there and
scream at Tori for pulling Merrill from such a great performance when he only had 87 pitches,
right? So I would, I would be screaming that. I would be here with, with you. I would be with
killer X. I would have a torch in my hand. We would be getting ready to go down as a mob and
attack Chase Field, right? So like, that's, that that is a difference in, of course,
what, you know, what, what, what the results mean. But, yeah, no, Sean's right,
snagging losses from the jobs of victory all year long. That's what it's really felt like.

Trust me, I've, I've had some friends that lost members of their family.
And it's never easy, but we thank all military personnel for their sacrifices.
Again, we will be back here on Tuesday with another postgame show.

Killer X, I'll drop your name one more time.
It's not because you're famous.
It's not because I can't name dropping you.
It's because your takes are ridiculous and you are insanely outrageously mad for maybe the right reasons.
But regardless, appreciate you guys for stopping by.
You can follow me on Twitter at Kapp underscore K-Man with a K.
I have no idea what Killer X's Twitter is.
Kevin is at Keb-O post.
Our show is at Ph&X underscore D-BX.
But again, as always, all roads lead to at PHNX Sports.
Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Thank you guys for your time. Again, see you on Tuesday.
Until then, hopefully the Diamondbacks can salvage this one and not get swept, move on
against the pirates, and get some wins. Until then, behave yourselves, have a wonderful
weekend, and remember kids, baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when your bullpen
can keep things like this from happening.
