Episode Date: July 29, 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks' starting rotation rose to the occasion against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Eduardo Rodriguez saved his best for last. E-Rod delivered another dominant scoreless outing in the... series finale, capping a series in which Arizona's starters threw three scoreless performances and reminded everyone why this team can be dangerous down the stretch. We break down Gabriel Moreno making Diamondbacks franchise history and what earning a split against the Pirates means for Arizona's postseason hopes. Plus, after Brandyn Garcia slammed the door on another win, we debate whether it's finally time for the Diamondbacks to move on from Paul Sewald as their closer.   0:00 - Intro 1:30 - Another big W 13:00 - Gabriel Moreno King Snake 23:00 - E-rod goat 38:00 - MLB Playoffs update 53:00 - The bullpen...   JOIN THE SUPPORTERS CLUB ➡️ https://tinyurl.com/yc6km2r4   An ALLCITY Network Production   SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: https://bit.ly/phnx_youtube   ALL THINGS PHNX: http://linktr.ee/phnxsports   MERCH https://store.allcitynetwork.com/coll...   ALLCITY Network, Inc. aka PHNX and PHNX Sports is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the City of Phoenix   PHNX Events: Get your tickets to PHNX events and takeovers here: https://gophnx.com/events/   ALLCITY — including us here at PHNX — is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for an exciting three-year partnership. Starting point is 00:00:01 What a win for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Eduardo Rodriguez gives them eight scoreless innings today on a day where no one was going to trust the bullpen. And the Diamondbacks split the season series with the Pirates. We have more on why that's so important. Gabby making franchise history and so much more. Don't you go anywhere. Turn on those cactus lights. We are starting right now.
Starting point is 00:00:24 Welcome into another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks post-game show. Log OK. presented by our friends at Circle K, it is your mayor, occasionally known as Derek Montia, thrilled to be talking about Arizona Diamondbacks baseball, but even more thrilled to be talking about a Diamondbacks series win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and Erod having one of his best games
Starting point is 00:01:03 of his entire career, at least as a Diamondback. Of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365. Bet365, we're winning is everything. Go download that app right now, a new customer, you can get yourself some bonus bets by using our code of PHNX 365. And we're also brought to you by the fine folks at GameTime. Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use code PHNX for $20 off your first purchase to attend wonderful baseball games just like this one. Terms do apply.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Welcome in you guys. I am not alone. Not only am I joined by you wonderful folks here in the chat. Make sure to hit that like button as you come in. But I'm joined by the Shane Gang, Shane Defenbach on the ones and twos. and if you guys enjoyed this very short baseball game, you can thank Shane for it because he was the one who was constantly egging on this particular game
Starting point is 00:01:50 by telling it, it's going so long. And why is this game so long? Yeah. It was a beautiful strategy. Yeah, I mean, look, I do what I can out there for the team. Look, I needed you here last night because I had a Lindsay Sterling concert to attend that I didn't make, thanks to the extra innings debacle last night.
Starting point is 00:02:06 But again, today, Erod shoved for this team, and he was not even going to let the ball. bullpen have a chance to ruin it for him. He gave this Diamondbacks team eight scoreless innings today, and that is the big story here in this three to nothing win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Diamondbacks improve to 57 and 52 this season. And Shane, anytime we talk about the record, you know what that means. We got to send Little Geraldo Predomo up the mountain. Please, if you wouldn't mind, Jerry P. Jason says we are 1 and 0 in nine inning normal games today with Shane on the ones and twos. Yes, that's a good point. We are also even splitting the series
Starting point is 00:02:54 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, which as they discussed on the broadcast today is extremely important. Extremely important. This Pirates team is very good. Their offense continues to be one of the best in baseball, and Diamondback starters held this offense to zero earned runs, zero earned runs in three games by three Diamondback starting pitchers. They all deserve their flowers. And of course, They gave the Diamondbacks exactly what they needed in this series, not only some dominant performances from the starters, but they gave the Diamondbacks a chance to win, a very important series. Now that they have split the season series with the Pirates,
Starting point is 00:03:33 should these two teams end up tied at the end of the season, the team with the better divisional record will go on to the playoffs. And I don't know if you've seen the Diamondbacks divisional record, but it's pretty damn good thanks to them not only beating the hell out of the Padre, Or I should Padres are fine The Giants and the Rockies But that series sweep against the Dodgers could also be huge If the Diamondbacks do end up tying any of these teams
Starting point is 00:04:00 In the wildcard race as they come down to the final game And the final you know by final games of the season right But this one was great and again the diamondbacks have a much better divisional record than the pirates who also are in a very tough division there in the NL central The Diamondbacks have now won 12 of their last 17 games dating back to July 9th. Still, the National League's most wins in that time frame. And the Diamondbacks, believe it or not, have scored 76 runs after the All-Star break,
Starting point is 00:04:32 which is now the third most in Major League Baseball behind the Nationals and the Cubs. I mean, Cubs probably, Cubs haven't played baseball the day. So actually, their second most in baseball behind, just the Nationals. Just the nationals. but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cubs go ahead and extend that when they play their game today. Meanwhile, like I said, Eduardo Rodriguez was incredible. Eduardo Rodriguez has been incredible all season long, and he gives the Diamondbacks his best performance of the second half and arguably the best performance in a Diamondbacks uniform, maybe even the best performance of his career.
Starting point is 00:05:09 I didn't have time to research all of that. As you know, I'm a pretty busy guy when it comes to trying to get this show ready. But Erod now is a 2.48 ERA this season, which is fourth among qualified National League starters behind Jacob Mizorowski, Chris Sale, and Chase Burns for the Cincinnati Reds. It's a pretty good company to be in. More importantly, the Diamondbacks don't seem to lose baseball games very often when Erod is on the mound. They are now 17 and 3 in Erod's last 20 starts. Amazing. Just an incredible turnaround for a player that so many people at the beginning of the season had grown tired of.
Starting point is 00:05:49 So many people had written off as being a bad contract for this team and a bad signing. The Diamondbacks would not be sitting here with a 57 and 52 record this season if it wasn't for Erod and his 2.48 ERA. And again, it's amazing. A piece of Yoshi just got here and said, the game ended already? Yes, yes, as we discussed, thanks to Shane's constant. badgering of how long this game was going. We got ourselves one day removed after what could probably be the longest baseball game of the Diamondback season. We get what is probably the shortest game today.
Starting point is 00:06:26 This game did start, believe it or not, at 9.35 a.m. And here we are at 12 p.m. going live. The time of game, two hours and nine minutes in this economy. You got to love it. You got to love it. But again, the offense today, they were held hitless early in their first three innings by Pirate Starter Jared Jones, and it didn't feel like the things were going their way, especially after last night's extra innings marathon. But then I cursed the situation.
Starting point is 00:06:58 I put out, of course, on Twitter as one does. The Diamondbacks don't have a hit in this game, and I put my little stupid meme, and it worked almost immediately. Because the very next batter after I tweeted that out in the fourth inning was Corbyn. Carol, who would get the debacks first hit with a lead-off double with one out. Carol would steal third. It would be challenged and reviewed and upheld. So Corbin, again, very fast, Corbyn Carroll, 15 stolen bases this year for Carol. Sorry to interject real quick.
Starting point is 00:07:29 I was just doing some research to see what Erod's technical best start would have been. He did go eight and a third earlier this year against the Mets. Okay. Was it scoreless? Four strikeouts. I don't know if that was scoreless or not. But it's definitely not his best because his best. So the eight and a third against the Mets was one earned.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Okay. But in 2023, he went eight innings, no earned 10 strikeouts. And that just goes to show the difference of philosophy from that time for one, Eduardo Rodriguez, versus what the Diamondbacks have been doing with him this year. He also went eight innings, two hits, no earned nine strikeouts that year also. And that was for the Tigers, right? That's who we thought we were getting. This is who we thought we were getting.
Starting point is 00:08:14 This is why we added to the starting rotation and signed Erod to a four-year deal. This exact type of start today was the exact type of starts that we thought we would be getting out of them and have not really gotten out of them until this season. So again. For sure, the best start he's had in a devac game form. And I mean, I'm not surprised by that because I would doubt that 24 or 25 you would find one of those starts. Maybe peppered in there. I do know I wouldn't shut up about a five-game stretch that.
Starting point is 00:08:40 he had last year against some of the best teams in baseball where he was simply incredible, but that was an anomaly for Erod at the time. Now it's what he is. It's who he is. He is the ace of this staff. And because of him, the Diamondbacks, who only scored three runs today, kind of had this victory in the bag. It felt like the entire game, and it was because of how E.rod was pitching.
Starting point is 00:09:00 Like I said, though, their offense was held scoreless through the first three innings, so it definitely felt like it was a bit of a hangover game. But then with Corbyn Carroll on third base, after that was reviewed, and upheld, Gabrielle Moreno would deliver a two-run home run, his eighth of the season, to give the Diamondbacks a two-nothing lead. And lo and behold, when all was said and done, that would have been enough for the Diamondbacks to win this game. It was 101.6 miles per hour off the bat and was 407 feet to center field for Gabby.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Also, with that fourth inning homer, Gabrielle Moreno, has set a new franchise record by reaching base safely in 45 straight starts, surpassing Corbyn Carroll's, record of 44 straight starts back in 2024. His 45 start on base streak is the second longest by an MLB primary catcher since 2000 when Jonathan Lucroy did it for the Milwaukee Brewers. And he had 49 straight starts reaching base safely. So there's a good chance that not only could Gabriel Moreno here grab a piece of Diamondbacks history, but he could maybe snag a little bit of MLB history as well there. So it's impressive what Gabby's been able to do this year.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Cannot say enough about how he has simply let this game come to him. He's seeing the ball extremely well. And Moreno seems to be involved in the offense at all times. In fact, he was involved in their other runs scored as well. Moreno started that off in the sixth inning with two outs. He walked. Cotell Marte would single to put runners on the corners. And then Max Kepler would bring him home.
Starting point is 00:10:38 with an RBI single that gave the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead, and that would be essentially where the game would end, right? We got a cool bro super chat. Thank you so much, cool bro, for your super chat. He says debacks are 4 and 3 on this road stretch so far. Not terrible. I mean, you would like it to be better, especially with how critical these games are.
Starting point is 00:11:01 But, you know, the big problem there, especially in the losses to the nationals, was starting pitching. and you can see what a difference it has made in this series because the Diamondbacks needed solid starting pitching. In fact, Merrill Kelly's one run, but no earned runs in game one, looked like it was also going to get the victory until late when the bullpen gave up the game,
Starting point is 00:11:22 and the Diamondbacks end up losing an extra innings by a score of three to two. Same thing happened last night. You got a starter giving you seven innings scoreless and the offense giving you a six-nothing lead, and somehow they blew it. and it had to go to 12 innings, and it had to ruin my night and your night and everyone's night, including the Diamondbacks night. But they still hang on for the win, and today they get a very, very important win here over the Pirates.
Starting point is 00:11:47 So, again, it's, you know, it is what it is. Cool bro says, why are we celebrating? I thought season is over. No, no, no, my friend, I will say that we were not. We said that if they lost yesterday's game, if they would have lost after being up six to nothing yesterday, that would have been the end of the season, at least for me. I would have checked out from this point on. But luckily, I'm fully engaged now more than I've ever been.
Starting point is 00:12:11 We're more back than we've ever been. That's the way it works this season for the Diamondbacks. They didn't have much offense today overall. They were just held to six hits total in this game. But the Diamondbacks did get some crucial runs there with those six hits. Corbyn Carroll was one for four with a run scored, a stolen base. He had a double for that one hit. Max Kepler was two for four with an RBI, and Ildemarovar Vargas was one
Starting point is 00:12:36 for two with a walk. But our king snake of today's game at least for now is one Gabrielle Moreno, who was one for three today with a home run that was the big difference maker. He scored two runs again. Big difference maker and the two RBI
Starting point is 00:12:52 overall in a very, very close baseball game. And like I said, that fourth inning home run set a new franchise record, reaching base safely in 45 straight starts. And that 45 start on Bay Street is the second longest. by a primary catcher in a very, very long time by this team.
Starting point is 00:13:11 Overall, the Diamondbacks, you know, again, this was a win that was incredibly needed, not only considering how important this week is to set the right kind of tone, set the right kind of impression, and keep your grips on a playoff spot, but obviously with the trade deadline coming here next week, we know that this is going to be very much a, you know, a game time decision, an 11th hour decision here potentially by the debacks, whether they want to make a big splash at the trade deadline. I don't know what assets they would be willing to part with.
Starting point is 00:13:53 I don't know what they would be willing to do. However, the more games they win, the closer they get to securing themselves as a, at least a playoff contender. the more it probably helps Mike Hayes in the front office to want to make those decisions to add to this team instead of subtracting from this team, which again, I don't think was going to happen. I still think that if anything was going to happen, this team was going to make a mediocre trade that doesn't necessarily move the needle as much as most of us would like to see and not really improve this team a ton. I still don't know what their focus is going to be. After you look at a game like this, you can't help but think that this offense still needs some help.
Starting point is 00:14:38 Did you forget what we decided yesterday? We know what the trade's going to be. Oh, yeah. Shane's already over here getting us trades with the Seattle Mariners, which we did. We talked about this a little bit yesterday. It's the deadline. They're going to make a trade with the Mariners. It just depends on who the trade is going to be.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Absolutely. Can I interest you in another starting pitcher? I mean, the debacks, it would be nice. You guys got a lot of those. Be nice. You got so many, it's kind of a problem for you. Yeah, they're running a six-man. They have the two best starting pitching prospects like a whole time coming up.
Starting point is 00:15:07 Yeah, yeah. Can I interest you in Emerson Hancock? You can absolutely interest me in the trade block. It'll only cost you a couple things. What do you want? It's not what I want. It's what it's going to cost. What are the Mariners want?
Starting point is 00:15:19 I mean, Ryan Waldschmidt will be a mariner at the end of it. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, Ryan Waldschmidt. He's asking if Randy will be in the trade. He might. You know, what about, can I introduce to you in one Jose Fernandez? I mean, for two weeks, he was the greatest baseball player on the planet. He's basically Julio. I am saying, that's what they've said.
Starting point is 00:15:41 That's what they've said. Piz Yoshi, thank you for gutting yourself off. Yes, we can definitely talk, though. Definitely talk. The Diamondbacks and Mariners are notorious for making trades, and I will take any starting pitcher that we can get. This performance today, and the performance by the starters, once again, just showed you how important.
Starting point is 00:16:03 starting pitching truly is. You know, you could say the offense did enough, both last night and today. However, starting pitching is what gave them a chance in any way, shape, or form. And again, with the way that the bullpen completely gave last night's game away, if the starter didn't go seven scoreless, I don't know how yesterday's game would have gotten. There's no way for us to know. We don't live in that timeline. That one has been pruned by the TVA, I believe.
Starting point is 00:16:31 But regardless, we live in this timeline. And in this timeline, the Diamondbacks just took two out of three from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and they did it thanks to their starting pitching. Again, this team is so confusing, and I still can't figure it out. And I, again, am not very, I'm not envious of Mike Hazen and the job he has to do here at the trade deadline, trying to decipher if this team is, in fact, for real or not. It feels like it is at times. And today was definitely one of those games where you can't argue that Errod isn't,
Starting point is 00:17:03 one of the most dominant starting pitchers in baseball, and this team is pretty damn good when, you know, the pressure is on, which it definitely was in this series. We're going to take a quick break, and on the other side of this break, we are going to talk more about Eduardo Rodriguez's day because I can't get enough of what an outing this was for Erod. Don't you go anywhere you're watching the PH&X Diamondback Show.

And if you are ever involved in an accident or serious injury, you must do your research because the lawyer you hire does matter. After a serious injury, you want to hire an attorney that's focused on your best outcome, not how much money the firm makes.
Starting point is 00:18:43 That's the husband and wife law team. That is Mark and Alexis Breyer. Their team brings hundreds of years of combined trial experience along with multiple certified specialists in personal injury and wrongful death. And that's important because in Arizona, the state bar has certified less than 1% of all lawyers is specialists in injury and wrongful. death litigation, making them experts in the field. Plus, they also go to trial for their clients. They are trial lawyers. They know their way around a courtroom and what needs to be done to prevail in front of a jury. Now, they cannot guarantee the outcome of any case. Nobody can, but they can make promises to you as your lawyer, including that you can cancel your fee agreement with them at any time
Starting point is 00:19:19 for any reason. You may speak with one of their lawyers as often as you choose about anything you want to discuss, including Erod shoving this season. And you have the right to discuss that as your lawyers, they will tell you both the strengths and weaknesses of your claim so that you can make informed decisions. You've had a serious injury. Call the husband and wife law team first at 602-783 8-841 or visit or visit their website at the link in our show notes and tell them pH and X sent you. What more can we say about Erod and his day? Errod shoved today and not only did he shove, but he went out there and gave the Diamondbacks eight innings and a hundred and what was his total all said and done, 105 pitches for the win today.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Erod was not going to let this bullpen ruin his day. Erod wasn't going to let anybody ruin this day, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates starting lineup. He did give up a lead-off single to the very first batter he faced, which is hilarious considering the outcome of this game. But he immediately got a double play to erase the base runner. He then sat down the next eight batters in a row before giving up a one-out single to Brandon Lough in the 4.
Starting point is 00:20:28 followed by another single to Brian Reynolds on a poorly played play by Kepler in left field earlier. And Kepler did kind of play that play. He just made a mistake judging the ball. It felt like he could have gotten to the ball, but he did not see it or I don't know. It would just look like it was a mistake out there. Luckily, the Diamondbacks did not have that come back to bite them, and they would immediately turn a double play to get that runner as well. 16 double plays made behind Eduardo Rodriguez and his defense this season
Starting point is 00:21:01 is the second most in MLB behind Seth Lugo's 17. Impressive. And it's a big reason why Eduardo Rodriguez had the success he's had this year. The pitching philosophy, I promise I can talk, implemented by Jeremy Blyche and the Diamondbacks this season, has worked incredibly well for Erod. It seems to be about pitching to contact. It seems to be far less about the strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:21:28 As Shane pointed out, having similar performances like this three years ago, but getting 10 and 9 strikeouts instead of two like he did today is a big difference. But again, the reason why he was able to go as long as he was able to go today is because of pitching the contact, is because of those ground ball outs, turning those double plays behind him, and a few one, two, three innings that he had as well. He gave up a single to Triolo in the fifth, but followed that up with a one, two, three, six inning. In the seventh, he walked Reynolds to lead off the inning, but again, got out of that without any runner scoring, any batters reaching base. And he followed it up with a very, very impressive eighth inning overall that it just blew me away that he was able to come out there and give the Diamondbacks when he was already nearing 100 pitches.
Starting point is 00:22:22 that final inning of work and get those three outs. After watching this bullpen do what they did last night, I can understand Erod saying, I'll go to 110, I'll go to 120, I'll pitch until my arm falls off today. And it felt like he was going to do that. Let's take a look at his pitch chart because he was landing his pitches today
Starting point is 00:22:45 exactly where he wanted them. And it does feel like Erod takes a bit off of the fours, fastball and has over this season. And because of that, he's able to control it and command it extremely well. He used his forcing 40% of the outing today. It maxed out at 93.7 miles per hour, but it averaged 91.7 miles per hour. Not an overpowering fastball by any stretch of the imagination, but it paired extremely well with his change up, which he used 25% of the outing. He got five whiffs on the fastball and seven swings and misses on the changeup. He also used his cutter, which again, another complementary pitch to the four seam fastball. Those three pitches for Erod
Starting point is 00:23:31 work extremely well together. And as you can see here, he kept his forcing fastball up in the zone. There's not very many cutters even that dropped down out of the zone. But the cutter movement is different than the four seam fastball movement. Meanwhile, the change up, those green dots, They barely landed in the zone, and when they did, they hit that corner down and away from batters, mostly. But they were dropping out of the zone, and again, those three pitches together have been the key to his success, especially using his change-up in conjunction with his forcing fastball. He got three whiffs on the cutter. He used the curveball 8% of the time, sinker, 6% of the time, 15 whiffs total, but only two strikeouts today.
Starting point is 00:24:15 You know what I think was working really well? that up and in fastball to righties. Yes. That was freezing them. He was freezing him. He was getting ahead and counts. And then again, he comes back with that changeup that just drops so far out of the zone that, you know,
Starting point is 00:24:31 you're starting to swing at it before it gets there and then it's gone. So again, that helped those double plays behind him. That helped him with those ground balls. And even though the Circle K strikeout meter deserves better, still two strikeouts today for Dback starter. and, you know, what can you say? The success is there,
Starting point is 00:24:50 even though we're not necessarily lighting up the strikeout meter like we should be, Shane. No, as you said before the show, man, it deserves so much better. It deserves better. It deserves better. I mean, it wants to be fed. It needs to be fed. I've said it in the past. The strikeout meter doesn't even like to be fed.
Starting point is 00:25:06 The strikeout meter likes to hunt. Yeah. But again, still, it's hard to be mad about only two strikeouts when he gave this team eight innings pitched. Five hits, zero earned runs, one walk, and 2K. Yeah, I mean, Erod did nothing wrong because he delivered, but the strikeout meter still deserves better. This is not a strikeout meter. This is a response to somebody saying that they're on their way home.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Okay, okay. Yeah. Sorry, guys. Well, of course, we don't do this often, but it's deserved today, I think, Shane. It's the rare double-headed king snake. Eduardo Rodriguez is absolutely your king snake. Is there a name for that? A two-headed snake? I'll look it up.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Here you go. I see you find that. Two-headed snake, I think, is... I mean, I remember from the zoo seeing a two-headed snake one time, it was awesome as a kid. And this, today, this two-headed snake was also awesome.
Starting point is 00:25:58 Erod gave the Diamondbacks again, eight innings pitch, two strikeouts, zero earn runs, and five hits. Can't say enough. Can't say enough. And one walk, which is also extremely important. This duo of Erod and Gabi is said to have been hatched
Starting point is 00:26:12 from the blood of Medusa's head. And its name is an ab... This is tough. Amphus Baina. Yeah, cool bro got it too. You guys both got it up there at the same time. I don't know how to say that. Sick.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Jordan says, it's a hydra. Hail hydra. Isn't that three heads? I think so. I don't know, man. I don't care. I'm trying. I'm excited.
Starting point is 00:26:36 I'm excited. Yes, you do. I do very much. I care. I want to get that right. I want to get that right. And you know, who else I care about is Brandon Garcia. The man is assertive.
Starting point is 00:26:44 G and a bona fide stud. And you can't teach that. He is who the Diamondbacks leaned on today in the ninth inning, and he got the job done as he does when he comes into baseball games. He's been very good for the Diamondbacks. He gets his second save of the season, one inning pitched, one walk, and two strikeouts today. And I have no choice, but we are going to talk about if it's time for the Diamondbacks to move on from Paul Seewald as their closer in the ninth inning.
Starting point is 00:27:13 We'll discuss that a little bit later, but after you saw the results of today's game, you could tell that they very much wanted to try to go in a different direction and not let this game slip away from them. The Diamax also did a good job with their ABS challenges in this series, but today, no ABS challenge is used, and you know I don't like that. You know I hate that.
Starting point is 00:27:38 Once again, are you leaving your ABS challenges to your children in your will? Are you turning them in? at the prize counter at the end of the week. So you would rather function like Randy Rosarena, who has taken two in the lead-off role in the same at bat and lost them both, and then you don't have any challenges for... Okay, no, don't do that. Don't do that.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Don't do that. But there was like a borderline call that was for a strike that they didn't challenge when E-Rod threw one. Again, I just don't like the reluctance to use challenges. It's not to say this was a blowout. I understand if, like, last night, If this was a recreation of last night's game without the eighth in the ninth inning, and you're talking about winning six to nothing, then fine.
Starting point is 00:28:19 But on a game like this where it was very close and those moments matter, I would like to see them using it. The Diamondbacks held the Pirates today to just 0 for two with runners in scoring position and a 19.2% hard hit percentage. Meanwhile, the Pirates were 0 for 1 on their one challenge used today. and overall the Diamondbacks just kind of had enough in today's game. This one though, the credit for this win definitely goes to Erod and to Brandon Garcia. The offense put up three runs but holding this Pittsburgh Pirates team to zero earn runs,
Starting point is 00:28:59 a team that had the third best OPS coming into the series and all the baseball is impressive. And outside of yesterday's debacle, once again, the Diamondbacks did a good job overall of holding the pirates to make. minimal run scored and frustrating them in the series. The most important thing, as I covered earlier, though, is that now this series season is tied at three games apiece, and the Diamondbacks do not have to worry much, I would say, about what would happen if they tied the pirates at the end of the season for a playoff spot. The debacks, like I said, have dominated the NL West.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Meanwhile, you cannot say the same thing about the Pirates and the NL Central. I believe they barely have a winning record overall against the NL Central. and they still have a lot of games to play against some very tough opponents in that division. You could say the same thing about us. However, the Rockies and the Giants have been very bad, and I do think that with more games to still play against those teams, as well as a four-game set against the Padres
Starting point is 00:29:57 and then another three-game set to wrap up the season, I feel pretty confident about what the Diamondbacks' divisional record could look like by the end of the season versus where the pirates will be. And all of this is important. But what's more important is what the Diamondbacks do, going forward. What are they going to do for this upcoming series in Cleveland? And are they going to trust Mitch Bratt and Cole Drake to take the mound for them in games one and games two?
Starting point is 00:30:25 We will preview this series on tomorrow's episode. So make sure to join us for that. More importantly, make sure to join us live for that. Starting point is 00:31:18 but just a little tip ahead of time for you. We're going to take a quick break. Starting point is 00:34:11 off, download the GameTime app today. Shane, what time is it? Game time for? No, that's a little sickly bark. Well, we got, of course, a big series win here for the Diamondbacks, and overall, it's important, as I discussed earlier. The Diamondbacks needed the series win over the Pirates. It doesn't feel like this team is going to be going away, and they're kind of locked in
Starting point is 00:34:36 with a Pirates team that, hey, it's the Pirates, right? We always kind of discredit them. We write them off. But they are a team that's been putting up some good numbers this year. And in this series, things went shockingly wrong as far as what we should have done to their pitching staff. Let's take a look here at the numbers here from the series. The Diamondbacks win this series two to one. They outscore the pirates 13 to 10.
Starting point is 00:35:04 they outhit the Pirates, 30 to 28, and home runs. Look at that. Look at all the power in this series. Two home runs, the one home run for the Diamondbacks. But this is the most impressive stat here. Starting pitching ERA, 0.00 for the Diamondbacks, starting pitching ERA for the Pirates, 5.28. This is not how this series was supposed to go, according to, are numbers that we looked at on Monday, Shane.
Starting point is 00:35:36 This is not what this was supposed to do. The Pirates came into the series with a 4.17 starting pitching ERA, which was 12th best, and a 4.53 relief pitching ERA, which was 24th best in Major League Baseball. Instead, their bullpen held us in check the entire time. And meanwhile, we wrecked their starting pitching. So pretty good job there by the Diamondbacks offense.
Starting point is 00:36:02 but if we could take a look at those numbers. Again, there is another number that is shocking when it comes to this. And yes, that is the runners in scoring position for the Arizona Diamondbacks. 7 for 47, 47 opportunities to score runners in this series and the D-backs converted seven of those for a 149 batting out.
Starting point is 00:36:32 average. Our guy Jack Summers has been discussing how bad the Diamondbacks have been with runners in scoring position lately versus how good they were at the beginning of the year. In fact, they were one of the best teams at scoring runners in scoring position to start the season. And yeah, they aren't that anymore. They are definitely not that anymore. But again, they did enough, like I said, to win this series and that's all that matters.
Starting point is 00:36:59 Meanwhile, the pirates in this series with runners in scoring position, We're 9 for 30, which is a 300 batting average overall. I would love that. That would be nice. It would be nice to have that. But again, what's more important is where the Diamondbacks sit as we slowly creep towards the trade deadline, where they're currently at in Major League Baseball as far as the playoffs are concerned. And again, this doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:37:28 This is still too much baseball to play. However, it is about the influence on the front office. Winning these baseball games right now mean everything to this team, considering how many other teams are having a very similar season and are currently sitting close to a playoff spot. When you look at, for instance, the American League, which Shane can attest to this, like everybody's in it. Well, not everybody.
Starting point is 00:37:57 Everybody's bad. The athletics, the Royal. and the angels aren't in it. But you could argue everybody else is kind of in it. Blue Jays haven't been playing good baseball. Neither have the Tigers. They've kind of, they're looking based on reports, like they will be selling Terrick Scouble at the trade deadline.
Starting point is 00:38:13 Let's just hope. Did you see the Tigers tweet? He doesn't go to the Dodgers. What was the Tigers? The Tigers tweeted a picture of him with a goat emoji, and the picture of him, it almost looked like he was saluting the crowd walking off for the last. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:38:25 Don't do that. Didn't you come in a day's game with 99 career strikeouts going for number 1,000 today. Incredible. That's going to be a game changer for whatever team or franchise lands. That player, at least for the rest of this season. In a shocking turn, it'll be the Seattle Mariners. They'll have the first 13-man rotation.
Starting point is 00:38:44 Well, if you are within five games of 500 in the American League, you're in the race. And when it comes to the current standings for the National League, the Arizona Diamondbacks right now, as we speak, doing this show, are in the second wild card spot. That is right. The Philadelphia Phillies have lost three games in a row. The Diamondbacks have tied the Phillies with a 57 and 52 record and the D-backs currently hold the season series over the Phillies after winning that series against that team. 57 and 52, they're actually starting to put some distance between them and the teams behind them. Now the Washington Nationals sit at one and a half games back from the Phillies and the Diamondbacks.
Starting point is 00:39:29 You have the Padres and the Marlins both two games back, and the Cardinals sitting at three games back. Oh, and the Pirates also sitting now at two games back. It's wild, right? It's wild. And as far as what we expected this team to be this season, you can't help but be pleased that they're five games over 500, considering everything they've been through.
Starting point is 00:39:55 Think about all the injuries, all the setbacks. We still don't know of Corbyn Burr. is returning this year. We have no idea what the hell they're going to do with Ryan Nelson. All signs point to this team just getting better and better as they get down the stretch. But that is based on the hope of these guys returning. And we don't know if any of them are in fact going to return. It feels like they are.
Starting point is 00:40:17 But I think much like many fans, I'm tired of even hearing about the injury updates. Okay, they're throwing out to 90 feet now. Now they're on flat ground. Now they're on a mound. I just need to know when these guys are going to be back. When you look at the timetable, it still feels like there's a good chance that Corbyn Burns could return by the very end of August or the beginning of September. Ryan Nelson, who will return most likely as a reliever to help this bullpen out, he is going to be coming back around that same period of time. And we still don't know much more about Justin Martinez's return or AJ Puck.
Starting point is 00:40:53 Justin Martinez hasn't had any setbacks, so he should be returning to this team in the middle of August. which isn't too far away. Meanwhile, AJ Puck, he might be done. Might be done. Coach Henry says, are they expecting Martinez to step into high-leverage situations? I don't know. The impact that he could have on this bullpen could be huge, but I'm not sure if when he immediately returns,
Starting point is 00:41:22 if they're ready to put him into that role. You know what it is. What's that? I mean, the Mariners gave him another closer. Brandon Garcia, you are. Oh, yeah. Brandon Garcia is the closer. But see, the problem with that being A.J. Puck, right?
Starting point is 00:41:37 If you had A.J. Puck there as a dominant lefty, you could leave those closing duties in the hands of Brandon Garcia because you have that left-hander that you can bring in based on the most important moment that a lefty needs to come in to face that portion of the lineup. But with Brandon Garcia being the only lefty, it makes it hard for Tori to have. to have him be the closer, which I still feel like it's going to be based on... That's why you maybe trade for a lefty at the deadline. Man. And that's what's sad. Our needs keep changing.
Starting point is 00:42:11 Yeah. You know? And that's going to happen throughout the season based on injury and guys stepping up or guys not performing well. But we went from the only thing this team needed was a power bat first baseman slash DH to now needing pitching.
Starting point is 00:42:25 The Diamondback need starting pitching. I don't feel confident that they're going to be able to weather the storm with Cole Drake and Mitch Bratt out on the mound every five games. I also don't know if this bullpen is as solid as it once was. We're going to talk about Ryan Thompson and Paul Seawald's numbers here, but those priorities may have shifted. And that's here momentarily. We're going to get into that.
Starting point is 00:42:53 But as far as the playoffs go, like I said, said, nothing is written in stone. We aren't anywhere close to the end of the season. And with two months left to play, it would be insane to be excited about the Diamondbacks being in the second nationally wildcard spot. But nobody's ever accused me of being sane. So of course, I'm going to overreact and act like a crazy person because this is an accomplishment. They still sit five games back from the Chicago Cubs who have that first spot. But you just feel like these other teams are going to also be playing each other a lot, especially considering that you have the nationals in a really tough division there in the NL East
Starting point is 00:43:35 that still has a lot of teams fighting for positions. You have them fighting the Phillies there, along with the Atlanta Braves, all for the playoffs. But you still have a lot of games left to play. And at this point, like I said, the debacks need to figure out a path to getting Corbyn Burns back, to getting Ryan Nelson back, to getting Justin Martinez back. Those guys returning once again changes your priorities.
Starting point is 00:44:04 And once again, this is what makes this an unenviable position for Mike Hayes into being. Do you really make a trade and lose assets that are part of your team for what most likely will be a rental to get you through 30 days? 25 games? I don't know. That's hard. That's a hard decision you have to make. As a GM, you then have to live with the consequences of moving those players. Mike Hazen has been very much in the mindset of acquiring talent, not giving it away.
Starting point is 00:44:41 Luckily, though, last year's trade deadline did give this team a haul, and they did absolutely fleece the Texas Rangers on the Merrill Kelly deal, which again is going to be funny because in this upcoming series, against the Guardians. If no changes are made, the Merrill Kelly battery, the Merrill Kelly trade battery, will be out there once again. Cole Drake, Mitch Bratt, and Merrill Kelly
Starting point is 00:45:04 all pitching in a series together because it's the way it is. I do think changes are needed, though. And I think changes are needed before you have both of those guys going once again. Zach Gallen is also a weird variable here. It feels like this team is, is not ready to give up on Zach Gallen, and it feels like Gallen is getting ready to return to the starting lineup.
Starting point is 00:45:29 He's getting ramped up and getting back. I know a lot of people disagreed with me when I said it the other day, and a lot of people would much rather see Mitch Brad or Cole Drake in there, getting time at a major league level and developing and getting better, rather than seeing Zach Gallen go out there and give up four to six runs every single outing. The problem with that being is that once again, Mitch Bratt and Cole Drake were not called up based on them being ready or based on their numbers being incredible.
Starting point is 00:45:56 They were called up due to need. And I know people want to see the future of this team getting those opportunities more than a player that the Diamondbacks are most likely going to part ways with at the end of the season. However, it still feels like Zach Gallen is going to give them a better chance at winning with him on the mound than the unknown variable that is those two rookies.
Starting point is 00:46:17 But I could be wrong about that. I'm wrong about a lot of things in life. This wouldn't be the first time. but El Greco says Fott is serviceable again. I would argue and counter with Fott is far more than serviceable. In his six outings since returning to the starting rotation, he has not given up more than two earned runs in any of those outings. Brandon Fott has somehow become the second best pitcher on this team behind Eduardo Rodriguez.
Starting point is 00:46:44 Again, not something I was thinking I was going to say in the year of our Lord 2026, but here we are. We're going to take a quick break And on the other side of this break, we're going to get into it. We are going to discuss if it is time for the Diamondbacks to, in fact, finally move on from Paul Seewald as their closer. And if getting a bullpen arm has now become a top priority for this team, don't you go anywhere?

AZ cards nerd 11 says Gallin can't win in big moments. Oh, I mean, I want to agree with that, but I've also seen Gallin's finest performances be against some of the toughest teams in baseball on some of the biggest stages.
Starting point is 00:49:28 So I don't know. I just think that Gallin has a terrible fastball, and perhaps they've spent this time figuring out ways that they can tinker with it and make him more effective than he's been this season. But I did want to tell you guys about our upcoming takeover of Chase Field. And your tickets right now are available at go-PHNX.com slash events, as well as in the link in our show notes. Well, do the Diamondbacks. Need to make a move now at the Trade. deadline for their bullpen.
Starting point is 00:50:26 We've addressed how things have changed. We talked about how starting pitching might even be a priority now over first base. Not to say their offense is great, not to say that they have the power they need, especially considering the production they're getting from both Nolan Aronado and whoever is playing first base. And that's now knock at either one of those guys, but the corner positions defensively are usually your power hitters. That wouldn't be the case for the Diamondbacks this year, and they're not getting much power overall. But this series, they were able to manufacture some runs and do the thing.
Starting point is 00:51:03 They scored eight yesterday, and overall they've had a lead in every game of this series. They scored 25 runs recently over 14 innings, and you can see how this offense might be fine without any additions being made to it. Defensively, Tim Tao has been really good over there at first base, and Tyler Locklear also kind of had his chances to shine. defensively over there. He did make a big mistake in last night's extra innings game, but that, once again, goes to experience. It shows the lack of experience by young Tyler Locklear. But now it would feel like after first base, DH, power bat being the priority
Starting point is 00:51:40 almost all season long, the priority shifted to starting pitching after the national series. Did it shift enough for that to actually be a priority for this team? Was it a priority already prior to that series. Possibly, once they saw the injuries coming in and knowing that they had to call up Col Drake and Mitch Bratt, they might have already seen the fact that it was time for them to make a change or do something about their rotation. But now, the bullpen definitely has a problem.
Starting point is 00:52:11 And that problem isn't just Paul Seawald, as we saw in yesterday's win that was almost the loss. Ryan Thompson was also terrible. Though we blame Paul Seawald quite a bit, and it is his fault. I'm not going to remove blame from Seawald. We have no idea how many runs would have scored in that game. The only difference being that if Thompson doesn't give up the three runs in the eighth, then Seawald probably doesn't even come into the game in the ninth inning,
Starting point is 00:52:39 and that game ends peacefully in nine innings with me making my concert and the Diamondbacks not needing to panic about their bullpen. But we got this tweet from our friends over at Dback. That's an info, and this is a rough one to read. Ryan Thompson, his last four outings and three in a third innings pitched, has a 2.1, 21, excuse me, 2.1, 2.1, 21.60 ERA, 13 hits, eight earn runs, two walks, one intentional walk, one strikeout, and a 4.50 whip, or whip, if you like that, version better. Paul Seawald in his last five outings. Two saves, two blown saves, three and two
Starting point is 00:53:28 thirds innings pitched, a 14.72 ERA, seven hits allowed, seven runs, six of them earned, four home runs given up, one walk, and five strikeouts. He has a 2.18 quib, and I hated it. Let's see. Mlarv says in there Tori should have pulled Thompson earlier. Easy to say, but it was a six to nothing game and Thompson gave up two runs. It wasn't the end of the world.
Starting point is 00:54:03 As far as Tori is concerned, they just need to win the ball game. Leaving Thompson in there was an effort to try to save a bullpen arm so that they had availability for not only the rest of this series but for their next three game series in Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:54:19 They do get an off day tomorrow. which is huge. This team needs an off day. But again, these arms aren't, you know, going to be completely revived by one off day. So Tori wanted to do his best to try to save as many arms as possible, even if that meant giving up some runs there by Ryan Thompson. You also have to leave a pitcher in for three batters.
Starting point is 00:54:45 I don't know if you guys are aware of that role. It just still felt like this is one of those, situations that Tori gets the blame for versus Ryan Thompson getting the blame. Why not blame the player that has not been performing well? Same thing with Paul Seawald. Paul Seawald's their closer. Tori doesn't make personnel decisions. His job is to go to their closer in a saved situation.
Starting point is 00:55:07 That might not be the case anymore after last night's game. Tori, after the loss, went on to say the following. To get where we're going, we need Seawald to go out, there and get those big outs. We'll count on him. He's going to get the baseball and continue to get those types of outs for us. The reporter asked, do you plan on giving him the next save opportunity? Tori said, I haven't thought anything about tomorrow. I've got to get through right now, but if there's something that will happen, I'll make sure that I talk to the right people first. Well, that's something very much did happen because Brandon Garcia came in in today's game for the
Starting point is 00:55:48 save, and it would appear that the trust in Paul Seawald momentarily is lost. Not sure if it's for the season, but it might need to be. You look at those numbers, you look at Paul Seawalt's numbers for the year. Nothing, none of it, none of it says that he's having a good season. The only thing that says that Paul Seawald is having a good season is the number of saves that he's racked up. That's it. There's nothing about. his ERA, there's nothing about his whip. There is zero about Paul Seawald's season that would give you confidence as a front office, as a manager, or as a fan that Paul Seawald is the guy to come in in the ninth inning. But he gets saves. And that save yesterday was just his third blown save of the season. He currently has a 5.26 ERA, a 1.01 whip. He has a 2 and 5 5 record. And again, nothing. Nothing as far as Paul Seawald is concerned would scream that this man deserves to be the closer for this team, except maybe the 1.009 whip.
Starting point is 00:57:01 Maybe that's it. But overall, it's not about that. Paul Seawald gives up entirely too many home runs, and it just feels like things are starting to crumble for him during the most important stretch of the season. As the Diamondbacks move here into the final two months, I don't know if you can rely on Seawald. So does that now change the priorities for this team? Do the Diamondbacks need to go out there and get themselves a closer?
Starting point is 00:57:27 Do they feel confident about somebody who's already on this team taking over that role? Or do they actually let Seawald continue to try to get saves as we roll on? I feel like things are going to change. I still think, in my opinion, that Ryan Nelson, even though he hasn't really done that and would probably still be more of a long reliever based on what he can do. do would be incredible as a closer for this team. He has one of the best fastballs in all the baseball, and it's not just one of the best fast balls. It's one of the best pitches. It's one of the best rated pitches in all of baseball. And you mean to tell me that coming into a game
Starting point is 00:58:02 in the ninth inning wouldn't dominate opposing batters? I don't know. You know, I do think that the Diamondbacks will have options in J-Mart, in possibly Ryan Nelson, and other arms returning. But there's still time between now and when those returns happen that the debacks have to get through. And I'm not sure if they're going to be able to rely on their starters to give them seven or eight innings scoreless every single game and have Brandon Garcia be able to take on that role as a closer. I will say, though, that if Paul Seawald isn't in a high leverage role, as Coolbro is suggesting here that Steve Gilbert said, then I don't know what use Paul Seawald has to this team.
Starting point is 00:58:49 If you want to take a look at his numbers in a save role, his numbers are atrocious in non-save situations. I'm sure the Diamondbacks will give that a chance, but the bigger thing is for them not to give him the opportunity to cost this team baseball games any longer. And he's only cost them three blown saves this year, so it feels crazy to think that. I just feel like we all watch last.
Starting point is 00:59:15 night's game. We all watched him come into it and we all knew he was going to blow it and he did. He didn't even get through the inning. They had to have Garcia come in and clean up that final out for him. I think that the writing is on the wall, especially if he's not going to be used in high leverage situations any longer and the debacks need to figure out who they're going to have step up into that role. And that's exactly what I said, cool bro. He's cost them in non-safe situations. He's been worse in non-safe situations. So I don't know how you convert him. him to a reliever. That comes in in like the sixth or the seventh.
Starting point is 00:59:54 Maybe he can be effective. I still would need to see that in order to believe it. But the Diamondbacks, again, have limited resources and a very, very difficult market when it comes to the trade deadline. There's a lot of buyers and not enough sellers. The cost for trading four players is going to be extremely high. And even then, there's no guarantees as to what happens. I will say as far as trades that we wanted to see the Diamondbacks make,
Starting point is 01:00:24 the Boston Red Sox and the Nationals pulled one off that has very much upset me because the Diamondbacks should have been in on Connolly Early. They ended up trading him to the Nationals for third baseman Curtis Meade. And Curtis Mead, since being traded to the Boston Red Sox, has broken What was it a broken? It was a broken wrist.
Starting point is 01:00:52 Yeah, broken wrist. Man, insane. Insane to trade for a player and then have them immediately land on the aisle with a broken wrist. So maybe just maybe you should have considered that trade with the Diamondbacks. That may or may not have existed.
