Just start the show.
Well, this one was a heartbreaker.
You'd almost rather, instead of giving you hope,
they never gave you hope at all.
Welcome into the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast,
live from Studio K, presented by our friends at Circle K.
My name is Derek Monti,
occasionally known as a man that wants nothing to do
with what happened in the ninth inning of this game.
But it was exciting for a moment until it wasn't.
Paul Seawald picked a fine time to blow his first save of the year,
and the Diamondbacks lose this one.
by a score of six to five to the Texas Rangers.
I am your mayor.
Of course,
I'm joined by your dog,
my dog,
Damon dog on ones and twos.
But Damon does not want to speak about much that happened here tonight.
The level of disgust is high.
There's a high level of disgust.
I believe Derek told me before the show that I am required to speak.
Otherwise,
I think I'd just kind of,
you know,
crawl up into my cocoon of sadness over here.
Yeah,
for sure.
Damon,
be a hard one to swallow after seeing the Diamondbacks pull off the ninth inning rally that they did only for them to lose it in the bottom of the ninth.
Of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365.
We're winning is everything unlike with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The debacks lost this one by a score of 6 to 5.
They dropped to 20 and 22.
And again, this was all after a fairly miraculous ninth inning rally put on by the Diamondbacks in the top of the ninth,
only for them to lose it in similar fashion in the bottom of the ninth.
Down 3-2 there, the Diamondbacks put together their biggest inning finally scoring,
three runs on four hits to take a 5-3 lead late.
only for Paul Seawald to pick a terrible time once again
to blow his first save of the year as he gives up eventually three earned runs
in the bottom of the night to lose the game and the series
to the Texas Rangers. Nellie was outstanding again.
In fact, he was incredible tonight. He wasn't perfect. He did give up three
earned runs, but it was his third quality start in a row,
and he recorded a season high for both innings pitched and strikeouts
tonight. But the offense waited for
forever to wake up. And when they finally did, they had, of course, the teeter-totter of this team
going the opposite direction. Their bullpen, which has been outstanding, wasn't. Both Paul
Seawald and Juan Morillo gave up hits in the ninth inning to lose this game to the Texas
Rangers. This one was terrible. There's no other way to say it. This might be the worst loss of the season
considering how much we thought that this was going to be one of the best wins of the year.
Yeah, this felt very last season, right?
Like the beginning of last season felt like we had a lot of these type of games.
It very much felt like that Cubs game when I was in Las Vegas, right?
And the games, yes, it did.
And the games this year that have been losses have been like ass kickings.
I feel like this season.
So it's been a little bit different in that regard, whereas, you know,
right now where you know this is this is a tough one to take you had it in your hands um and we should be we
should be pumped right now derrick that's the part that sucks oh didn't neither damon and i wanted to do
this this show a party with all of us we should be you should everyone should be feeling the love
i mean it's just unbelievable it's unbelievable it is unbelievable honestly i'm gonna watch this one i'm
gonna say this one that you shouldn't you got to wear this one you have to remember this one for a very
long time. And while I know everybody in the chat seemingly wants to blame Tori, I will say that
again, Paul Seawald has to shoulder some responsibility here with everybody. He is their closer.
He did have two outs in the inning. He was one out away from finishing the job and walking out of Texas
with a game three win and a series win. And Seawald couldn't get the job done. You can complain
about Tori not getting someone up faster.
I don't blame Juan Murillo for not being better
considering how fast they got him up
and how fast they tried to put him in the game.
And again, I don't care what anybody thinks,
but I've always said that the Diamondbacks need to be better
about warming up their pitchers.
So really when it comes down to it,
they put their full trust in Paul Seawald.
He was eight for eight coming into this game,
and he picked the worst time, like I said,
for him to obviously blow, you know, his first save of the year.
I say worst time because of the fact that this came on the heels of a comeback,
just, you know, half an inning earlier, right?
Anytime you blow a save is a bad time to blow a save.
So forget what I said there.
I'm just saying it felt, this felt like the worst time because of how the high we were riding on
and how good everything must have felt in that dugout,
especially with two outs there in the ninth inning,
and then everything fell apart for Paul Seawald.
I think Paul Seawald, and it's something Grito's touching on here in the chat,
like his start has been a little bit deceiving.
Paul Seawald, 100%.
In terms of nine for nine on save opportunities.
They are lucky to have that.
Like he's had his bad outings.
They've just come in non-save opportunities.
And really, like, I think that, you know, like,
we make comments about like, why would you pitch him in non-save opportunities?
But at the end of the day, it probably hasn't.
really nothing to do with that. It has just more to do with those are circumstantially the times
that he got rocked. And the other times, he's either gotten a combination of lucky versus,
you know, pitching well. And I, in this game, this is the first time that he blows a save
tonight, felt like he was due for one of those. I'm not going to lie. And after you, and after you make
this miraculous ninth inning comeback, like, who here was feeling good about Paul Seawald coming into this
game to get his 10th save and 10 opportunities to start this season.
I don't know, man.
It felt like it was it was time for him to kind of leave one by the wayside.
But that sucks that we don't have like confidence in our closer like that.
Whereas, you know, I think that if Juan Murillo maybe is is getting a clean inning,
like I feel pretty damn confident that he's going to finish the job there.
And Seawald should have even with the two outs like you mentioned.
So I mean, this one just, it hurts.
we should be talking about one of the best wins of the season.
I know.
I know.
Derek should probably be cracking open one of those Guinness that we have left over from...
Pouring it over your head.
Yeah, maybe even shirtless.
Yeah, maybe even shirtless.
Like stone cold.
It sucks.
And here's what,
here's something to back up what you said as far as Paul Seawald being due for a bad outing,
Damon.
Paul Seawald was one of just three closers that was perfect this season with Mason Miller
and Erald's chat.
Those were your three perfect closers so far.
Mason Miller's 12 for 12 for save opportunities.
Chapman 8 for 8.
Paul Seawald 9 for 9.
His nine straight saves was the most by D-Back's reliever to start a season since he did
it with 11 straight in 2024.
He opened the season on the injured list, so it took him a little while to get going.
But you also had Brad Boxberger's 11 saved straight back in 2018.
What?
I don't remember Brad Boxberger being that good.
Had 11 straight saves from March 30th through May 6th,
the start of 2018 season.
My father's day that I had with my sweet pops that one year.
He'll do that.
He'll do that.
Brad Ziegler had 15 straight from April 12th through June 20th,
2016.
And JJ Putts also had 15 from May 1st through May 2nd.
So he was electric.
But this one, I mean, again, man, I think there is something to be said about Paul Seawald going bad with two outs.
Right?
Like he comes in.
He gets Corey Seeger to strike out swinging.
He gets Josh June to Jung to single.
And then he gets Evan Carter to fly out.
So there is a runner on first with two outs and a two run lead.
Like it's still mind blowing to me that we lost this game.
Ezekiel Duran doubles to score Jung.
Then Alejandro Asuna walks.
We got to talk about him.
This fraud who earlier in the game stuck his arm out.
out with his stupid brace on to get hit by a pitch and walk
and then be part of a three run home run by Jake Berger
that gave the Rangers the initial lead.
That was pretty much the only mistake there by Ryan Nelson,
who was outstanding again.
That's a single mistake in the fifth inning.
And a lack of offense pretty much led to this, you know,
being what it was.
But the offense again woke up late,
gave the Diamondbacks five runs total.
And it looked like we were going to walk out of there with a win.
It didn't really even seem like it was really.
Ryan Nelson's fault.
Oh, it's definitely not.
As Yoshi puts in here, like that single was really dinky as well.
Then it leads, then you get the, you know, stick your elbow out, hit by pitch.
And then a three run home run that is, you know, fair, a fair ball by about three feet,
it looked like.
It was horseshit.
I mean, it's a, it's a really, really rough sequence for an otherwise, like, masterful
outing by Ryan Nelson.
And so, you know, you feel like the three earned runs is maybe a little bit undeserved,
but he still gets the quality started.
at the end of the day.
And yeah, I mean, I will say that I pointed this out to you as well with the Pardomo
check swing where he looked like he definitely went and they said that he did not.
That felt like a little bit of what goes around comes around with the Duran situation and the
hit by pitch because that was massive in that moment.
And he goes on to score and is a part of the ninth inning, you know, come back and
taking of the lead there.
And then it all just doesn't really matter in the long run because of Paul C-Wall.
Well, Ryan Nelson, like I said, he was outstanding tonight.
He gave the Diamondbacks a season high for innings pitched with seven innings pitched.
He gave them a season high with strikeouts with eight.
His four-seam fastball, he didn't even use it as much, Damon as he normally does.
It's the reason why I think he had the success that he had and was able to go as long as he was able to.
He only threw his four-seam, 45% of the outing.
Anytime you get a Nelly outing where he's throwing it less than 50%.
That's a miracle.
He threw an excellent mix of pitches tonight, including his cutter 18% of the time.
And that cutter and the four seam worked so well together because of the fact that those two pitches look so similar but have different breaks.
He got eight whiffs on the four seam fastball that maxed out at 97.3 miles per hour.
And he got three whiffs on the cutter.
He also got four whiffs on the slider, which he threw 15% of the outing.
And then he threw the curbstle, 14% of the outing.
And he got one whiff on that.
Two whiffs on the sinker as well, which he only threw seven times.
today. So everything was working for Ryan Nelson and like piece of Yoshi says, even that piece of
crap home run that Jake Berger hit had an expected batting average of 290, 290, Damon. That's another
one, just like yesterday. One of those home runs that just goes over the wall down that, you know,
right field line. And it's, it just sucks, man. It sucks to see this team lose in this fashion. It
sucks for Nelly to, you know, pitch as well as he did today.
You know, again, you look at this.
He did such a great job of keeping his four seam and his cutter up in the zone or out of
the zone, regardless of where he's throwing it.
He was keeping it up.
He was landing that slider again for whips.
He didn't even have to throw some of those other pitches very many times to get, you know,
a pretty high percentage of whips on those pitches.
But everything was set up with his four seam, which looked great today.
And unfortunately, for Nune's.
Ellie. He does not get much run support here while he was in the game, though, like I said,
the Diamondbacks put up those runs late. Meanwhile, the bullpen is what the bullpen is. Kevin
Ginkle at least got in his inning of work. He had one strikeout. He lowers his ERA to 3.71.
Paul Seawald gets charged with all three earned runs. He gave up three hits and two-thirds of an
innings pitch. He walked one, struck out one. And then Juan Murillo are reliable.
a reliable guy.
He gave up a very one pitch hit for the game.
So that sucked as well because, I mean,
one of the things that obviously we often say is that Tori doesn't, you know,
pivot fast enough from Paul Seawald when Seawalt's having a bad outing.
Hard to say this one was a bad outing until suddenly it was.
He did have two outs with just one runner on.
It felt like this one wasn't going to go the direction it did.
And then even Mordio, you know,
who didn't have enough time to warm up,
wasn't able to be his normal,
effective self.
But this whole game sucked.
We're going to talk about the offense,
which took entirely too long to wake up today.
But the king snake is Ryan Nelson.
Ryan Nelson is our king snake for tonight's game.
Nellie was incredible.
It's his third straight quality start for this team,
going seven innings,
getting eight strikeouts,
three earn runs,
and zero walks today.
for Nelson. So again,
Nelly is
making his case that he shouldn't even
be considered to be removed from starting
pitching rotation. And when you look at the way that
this series went and the last eight,
nine days have gone, it feels like there's a very
glaring, you know, problem
with the starting rotation,
which we discussed yesterday at length.
I don't feel like I need to kick any more dirt on
that guy's name. Because once again, just like I say about a lot of guys on this team,
and you got to understand. For me, it's hard because these guys are people to me. They're human
beings that I talk to and have conversations with. I think it's much easier to have the
attitude that fans tend to have about guys when you don't really see them as anything more
than guys that are either, you know, pieces of your team that are either helping you win,
or helping you not win or making you lose.
In the case of Paul Seawald, he has been unexpectedly good this season.
That's one thing that we can take away.
You know, hopefully very soon there will be a time where maybe A.J. Puck returns.
And perhaps even though he's going to be their big left-handed option,
perhaps A.J. Puck takes over closer responsibilities.
And the Diamondbacks don't have Paul Seawald out there as a liability.
And maybe things are much different for this team at that point.
Similar to the starting rotation,
Corbin Burns returns,
and if Corbin Burns is what we know
Corbyn Burns can be,
the starting rotation could be flawless
from 1 through 5
with the way these guys are pitching
at least right now.
But, again, it seems like
they have been trying to do what they can
with the personnel they have,
and today, Paul Seawald was not good.
He was not,
he was what Paul Seawald is at times that we fear for him to be.
At the end of the day, he still is a guy that does not throw very hard
and only has two pitches that he throws.
So, you know, you're going to get outings like this from Seawald
and you're just not going to be able to rely on him.
I think, again, what makes this so painful
is that the debacks did such an amazing job at putting together this
what seemed like a miraculous comeback in the top of the ninth,
only for them to blow it in the bottom half of the inning.
We're going to talk about that miraculous comeback
and how much it hurt on the other side of this break.

Well, it was another slow start for the offense.
Surprise, surprise.
That is something that has been happening entirely too much.
And again, it's this weird counterbalance for this team
that can't have all of their parts working together
at the same time.
The D-backs had plenty,
plenty of base runners
in scoring opportunities, Damon,
but it took them entirely long
and too long to get some runs
on the board in this game.
Took D-Backs six innings
just to score their first run,
which is outrageous,
considering how often
the Diamondbacks had two runners on
or a runner in scoring position
throughout this game
heading into those late innings
when they finally did start scoring.
And it started out right away.
Ketel Marte singled, lead off single to start the game.
Corby and Carroll walked.
You had runners on first and second with no outs.
You get Pardomo striking out.
You get Nolan Aronado striking out.
And then you get Bargis grounding out.
Nobody advances.
No run scored.
Second inning, three straight outs by the Diamondbacks hitters.
But then you got the third inning.
Again, Ryan Walshmit, singles on a fly ball to center field.
Ketel Marte walks.
Corbyn Carroll walks.
you have did have waltzmitt get caught stealing there and waldi would have scored had he not got caught stealing but after corbin walks and kattel walt moves to second you would have had bases loaded said you have runners on first and second with one out you got perdomo lining out and then you have no and ron arnato grounding out once again runners on first and second with one out and no runs score uh then in the fourth inning stop me if you've heard this one with two outs adrian del castillo walk
Gabriel Moreno singled, and then Ryan Walschmidt grounded out with runners on first and second and two outs.
And I mean, this just continued to be the trend it felt like.
Finally, they broke through there in the sixth inning.
Nolan Arnado doubled after Vargas struck out.
Lordus Gurriel hit an RBI double that put the Diamondbacks first run on the board for the day.
It was 3-1.
And then a couple of groundouts or ground out and a fly-out ended that scoring opportunity.
in the seventh inning,
you have Walt Schmidt grounding out,
then you have Marte singling,
Corby and Carroll walking again,
Perdoma walking,
and this time they get a sack fly
to get one run with the bases loaded,
and that's it.
The amount of scoring opportunities
this team had throughout this game was sickening.
The fact that they could never get that big hit,
just that big single,
that big line drive up the line
when runners were on at any point
was the reason why this team was only able to score two runs,
basically through their first eight innings.
It's been a joke.
And I don't really know what the problem is,
considering it's every player in the starting lineup.
Nobody has been truly consistent.
Nobody has delivered that big hit for this team.
And, you know, again, that's what makes this loss so heartbreaking.
Because finally there in the ninth inning,
the Diamondbacks come to bat,
and they're able to get Corbyn Carroll,
it's a lead-off double, Perdomo walks.
You got Nolan Arnado doubling, scoring, Corbyn-Carrill,
getting Perdomo over to third and tying the ball game up at three.
Then Vargy, the MVP of this team, comes up,
and he singles on a line drive to left field
to score both Perdomo and Arnado,
and the Diamondbacks go up five to three.
And then they even continue to kind of,
you know, Gabriel Moreno got a single in the inning
to put up Elamar Vargas on first and second.
And then you just had the Texas Rangers basically winning every single one of their challenges.
It felt like in the Diamondbacks losing every one of their challenges.
And just everything seemed to go against the Diamondbacks, except that top of that ninth inning.
That was the only time things started to go their way.
And it really did feel like the worm had turned.
It felt like the tide had turned in their favor.
And instead, that very much was not the case.
they just go right back to giving giving the game back in the bottom of the inning and uh i don't know
i i sit here flabbergasted still at what we saw i have emotional whiplash right now and i'm
still not over it damon i'm not ready to be over it and i just think that this team like
this does take me back like you said to some losses early in last season where even though it's
April, even though it's May, you find yourself going, my God, it's over for this team.
Just nothing is going our way.
Yeah, it's a, I mean, this was a bad one tonight.
This felt like, like, and I, there were a couple, you know, ABS challenges as well that
you're looking at and you're like, oh, that might, you know, maybe catch.
Oh, no, it's off the zone by this much when the Rangers challenge it.
But then when, when it's the other, you know, shoes on the other foot, you're like, oh, is that a ball?
Nope.
It caught the zone.
The seam, actually, the seam of the baseball elongated it out enough to catch the zone.
And also it feels like, you know, you kind of alluded to it with the lack of complimentary baseball.
But I think it applies to kind of, you know, not only like offense with pitching,
but I think just the offense in general, like there's the offense is not playing complimentary baseball right now.
It's Nolan Aronado getting a hit when, you know, the guys are, and he ended up getting the hit
with the runners on base later in the game.
But earlier in the game, he did not get the hit.
Jerry did not get on base earlier in the game when he had runners in scoring position.
And there was a time where the debacks were one for 13, I believe, with runners and
scoring position in this game.
And Kumar Rocker was giving you every opportunity to kind of blow the game open.
And yet you weren't taking any of those runners in scoring position opportunities.
I think that the offense is just not really clicking right now,
clearly and you're not stringing hits together properly.
And, you know, it needs to change.
You end up with five runs, which is nice.
I think I saw that it was the second time in eight games that you've even gotten to that five run threshold,
which is obviously not a good thing to hear.
Like five runs should be pretty standard, I think, or is at least the sign of an offense that is producing, right?
An offense that's producing is putting up about five runs.
And you just, you know, you're, it's coming few and far between.
right now and it took a ninth inning come back to to reach that threshold tonight need to find a way
to start stringing more offense together.
Kattel two for four tonight with a run scored and a walk.
You have Carol getting three walks tonight and going one for two with a run scored.
You love to see those walks out of Corbyn.
You do.
You do.
Exactly.
At least if he's not, you know, showing that power, he's not consistently hitting.
At least he's getting on base and he's such a valuable base runner, right?
You got Aronado going two for two with two RBI and two runs scored.
Vargas, one for five, with the biggest two RBI of the game.
Lordus Gurriel, another guy who just delivers just enough,
but is still right there now in that same territory as Alec Thomas
in regards to his production and the fact that it just feels like it's an out
every time Lordus Curiel is the plate.
He had the double, one for five, with an RBI.
but Dell was 0 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout Jose Fernandez 0 for 2.
He did reach base on an error.
You had Gabriel Moreno going 2 for 5 and Waldschmidt going 1 for 4.
But yeah, you have Del Castillo now hitting below 200 at 198.
You have Lordes-Guriel Jr. hitting below 200 at 194.
And again, just not enough.
Even on a night where they were able to put up a crooked number on the board in an inning and five runs total.
they lose by score 6 to 5.
It didn't even, honestly, with the way things were going to,
I didn't even want to watch them keep this game tied
and go into extra innings because I felt like it was just going to delay the inevitable,
which was going to be an inevitable range.
Extra innings was an L for sure.
But man, this one really stings.
The lack of production at the right time stings,
but going three for 16 with runners in scoring position.
Three for 16 with runners in scoring position.
I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, Damon,
because we're going to look at the numbers.
The Rangers in three games had 16 runners in scoring position.
They just, but they took advantage of their opportunities.
But they went seven for 16 in the series.
The Diamondbacks had 16 opportunities just in this game.
And they went three for 16.
Just like the Pirates series, you feel like you were the better team in this series, I think,
and you come out with the Series L.
It's unfortunate two series in a row that feel like that.
And you keep compounding that, and all of a sudden you become a bad baseball team,
which you're teetering on being right now.
Are we missing Payvon Smith?
No.
I'm just asking.
They're saying it in the chat.
No, they are not.
One person is.
And he's a crazy person.
We've known this.
We got a super chat from our guy, Bees, Bees, thank you so much.
We love you, Bees.
Bees his presence makes things feel better somehow.
He says, Damon, dog, Derek, it's the hope that kills you.
It really is.
No doubt.
Like, I accepted this game being a loss long before it was at that point.
And it still hurts.
It hurts more than I thought it could have.
And I didn't think that they could pull me in and then break my heart.
they did.
Eric,
you guys,
I,
I,
I think that the best content
that could have possibly
come out of tonight
is if we somehow
had a live recording of Derek
during that night.
The Lydumaro Vargas,
RBI single.
From the El-Damara Vargas,
from the high of the Arnado
hit to the El-Damara Vargas,
you know,
you know,
put you up by two runs.
I may or may not have been doing laps,
just running laps around Damon
and the chairs in the main area.
To the drop-off of the Paul
Seawald, you know, ninth inning blown save.
And then maybe the 10 minutes afterwards where Derek is typing into his computer and then
screaming F bombs into the computer about five minutes later with no one prompting him or
talking to him at all.
I mean, I was scaring Damon.
I think Derek, Derek, this was the toughest loss of Derek season tonight.
That's a fact.
Like, no question about it.
I'm not sure that any other loss compares for you.
Okay, let's pull the curtain back, shall we?
We do work on this show.
We have to do things like the post game, you know, like the headline and the fun thumbnail and stuff.
We have to come up with all that.
I thought we just snapped our fingers.
No, no, people around your think that, Damon, but you very much know that's not the truth.
Later again.
How much work you have to put it in.
Oh, that's, yeah, that's those guys.
As Damon co-hosts and produce the show.
Yeah, yeah.
And as we go live 15 minutes after it, have graphics.
and all sorts of stuff ready to go on this two-man beat.
20.
Right?
I'll throw the people a bone there.
Yeah, we got to get it.
20.
Yeah.
Maybe sometimes it's depressing to know that you just,
you went from having everything in there as a loss,
and then you deleted everything out,
and you put everything in as a win.
Mm-hmm.
And I don't normally do that.
I don't normally do that.
I don't normally commit that much to reversing course.
going in another direction.
But boy, did I buy in tonight?
Ninth inning Miracle rally.
Rips the season series.
Series win away from the rainier.
Miracle in Arlington.
Yeah, without drafts.
Diamondbacks cap off.
It was great.
Best win in franchise history versus Rangers.
World Series revenge, question mark.
Question mark.
Corey C.
Washed question mark that's true no that's oh god at one point I almost tweeted a ground
ball so slow that even Corey Seeger could could field it tonight I mean because the
Kattel did hit one of those to him at a certain point Sean says here in the chat we might need more
watch alongs boys well Sean you will get your wish apparently we are planning on selling
watchalongs here we're contractually obligated and as no other sports are currently ongoing
that the the the uh the the the uh the the honor then is bestowed upon Derek and
Damon to be your will be your Huckleberry to for sure of course and so expect some
more watchalongs and then very near future between me and Derek and maybe hopefully we can
change the vibes of this team Derek the between the two of us and our in our vibes oh I don't know
man I don't know after tonight this one's uh this one's a tough one to get over and now we
The Colorado Rockies coming into town, or we're going to Colorado is what we're doing.
And the Colorado Rockies just put up 10 runs on the Pittsburgh Pirates, who the Diamondbacks struggled to do anything against.
Mitch Keller, by the way, they hung up seven earned runs, six earned runs and seven hits tonight on Mitch Keller in five and two-thirds innings.
Jake McCarthy, as Damon showed me, had an unassisted double play.
You heard that right.
Yeah, Jake McCarthy.
Outfielder Jake McCarthy.
Seven unassisted.
Had a seven you in tonight's game, and he went one for two with an RBI and a double.
Unreal.
Unreal.
Rivalry weekend with Jake McCarthy.
We are going to talk about that a lot.
We have a 12 p.m. show tomorrow, and we are going to probably go on for 30 minutes about the Colorado Rockies being our rival.
Yeah, I mean, that's one of those ones where they just kind of that we've, but we've played them on rivalry week.
I know recently.
Like this isn't just this year thing.
They're, they're trying to kind of be like, oh, yeah, you guys are.
It's because they're the Padres and the Dodgers are kind of their and the Giants and the Dodgers are their premier Dodgers rival.
They have like a little three something going on.
They have a triple rivalry.
I mean, let's face like obviously the Dodgers are big bro.
No one's dancing around that.
They're the biggest rival of maybe not the Rockies because the Rockies are.
so irrelevant but at minimum the the giants podgers and us all hate the dodgers more than anyone so
we all want our piece of the dodgers during rivalry weekend and i guess it's kind of on them to pick who
they who they want to play it's it's big time yeah it's big time like uh don draper syndrome there where
it's like we hate you and the dodgers don't even think about us except they did think about us a
little bit after 23. And it forced them to do some really, really maniacally evil things to the sport that
we all love. The beautiful game is that. Games gone. We're going to get beat by the Diamondbacks.
We're going to break baseball. Yeah. It's what we're going to do. It's pretty much what happened.
Speaking of breaking baseball, we do also have a conversation tomorrow to be had about apparently
they're trying to prevent a lockout happening in 2027. We need it. We need a lockout. We need a lockout.
we need a lockout yeah i'm gonna say it i'm gonna say it we need we need we need a harsh penalty i might not
have a job anymore but even then we need a lockout derrick's willing to put his job on the line
for the good of the game that's that's that's because a guy like derrick he that's that's what he
that's where his heart is at after games like this damon i'm not sure i want to do this job at all anymore
so i think that if i lose it then uh all so be it the
blessing him to skies.
I mean, here, the Rockies, you know, I saw MLB tweeted it today.
They were like, throwback to this rivalry series matchup between the Rockies and Diamondbacks in 2017.
And I was getting pretty fired up watching the Archie Bradley triple.
They were like, they put in there the first triple by a relief pitcher in, in MLB history.
And I was like, you mean the only triple by a relief pitcher in MLB postseason history?
because that's never going to happen again
because there will never be a circumstance
where a relief pitcher is hitting in a postseason game
and gets a triple.
So congrats Darjee Bradley.
He has a record that will essentially never be broken.
You're not wrong.
You're not wrong.
Well, we're going to take a quick break.
And on the other side of this break,
we are going to take a look at the numbers from the series
that are fairly disgusting.
And then we're going to talk a little bit about Cotel Marte
being the second longest tenure diamond back
in franchise history.
Don't you go anywhere.
You're watching the PHA next time in Beck Show.
Well, let me tell you, if there was ever a time I felt like I needed to go against all rules and just break into something we have on set, it's this beautiful bottle of Don Julio, 1942.
Derek, put the gloves on, my guy.
I'm going to touch the actual bottle itself, David.
That would be crazy.
But when I did this ad today, I put the white gloves on.
Put the white gloves on just to touch the box.
Absolutely.
We probably should be.
That's a very expensive.
Have some respect.
It's for the few.
It's for the few, Damon.
The few, the proud of Don Julio.
That's right.
When the biggest sporting event in the world comes to our backyard right here,
toast with the icon of celebration,
Don Julio 1942 during the 2026 World Cup.
I don't like the way that Damon says that that's the same year I was born.
That feels mean.
But Don Julio is an iconic brand.
As long as Derek Montia.
That's right.
We're two iconic brands.
So we recognize it.
each other. But the bottle is iconic and they have three different options available for the
World Cup, including the original, the trophy, which is what we got right here for the legends
on and off the field and the mini for small but iconic moment. So now matter how you're
celebrating, there is an iconic bottle of Don Julio 1942 for you to cherish and for everyone to
take a trophy home. Take home a special edition of Don Julio 1942 that honors the artistry of
tequila making a symbol as timeless as the beautiful game itself and inspired by the FIFA
World Cup trophy. From stadiums to street parties, the release is close at the heart of the
culture where football fashion and flavor collide. Be on the lookout for USMT, U.S. men's
national watch parties this summer, whether you get your favorite spot or stocking up for
home, make it a Don Julio, 1942.

Write that code down.
Yes.
Not one that's easy to remember.
But still very valuable.
$353.
And let me tell you,
it is exactly that.
But we do have some super chats here, Derek.
I want to rip real quick.
Go ahead.
B's said,
Ginger Jesus will save us.
Hold the line,
Damon in regards to Pavin Smith.
Doubt X.
Bees also says $2.
Appreciate Bs for these super chats tonight.
Says,
was at ASU grad ceremony today?
They thought I saw Damon.
No, sir, no sir.
Even if he did have somebody graduating, he wouldn't be caught dead on that campus.
Transonic says, is PHNX doing any World Cup watch parties?
I believe we are.
We absolutely are.
You're just going to have to be on the lookout, but we will be doing some stuff.
And I think it'll be kind of, you know, led by our PHNX rising crew.
But that doesn't mean that, you know, Derek and I and all the rest of the people here at PHNX sports won't be out there.
Because we love a little bit of World Cup and can't wait to get in on these watch parties.
especially because I think we're going to do them like sponsored with Don Julio and
Mickelope and stuff like that.
It's going to be electric.
Absolutely.
And again, this might be insider baseball, but Damon, keep a bat away from the Phoenix
Rising crew.
We learned that firsthand yesterday.
Don't let, don't let Reese swing a bat.
But Reese is as an Englishman bat sports, not his thing.
Yeah, definitely not.
Definitely not.
He needs to stick to things that he kicks with his feet on the ground.
The Diamondbacks, again, another weird series loss for them, another team that they probably should have beat.
Another series, they probably should have won.
But they were also very close to getting swept at the same time.
So you can take which direction you want to go with, but let's take a look at the numbers from this series.
The Diamondbacks got outscored by a score of 13 to 10 in the three games.
They got out hit 23 hits to 20.
dying backs only had one home run in the series and that that particular thing is happening
entirely too much yeah it is right where there's hardly any power for this team i was shocked that
they weren't in the bottom three for home runs in baseball quite frankly when i went to look up
team uh numbers for for power uh the rangers three home runs in the series they were seven for
16 with runners in scoring position for a 438 batting average.
Difference in the series right there.
Huge difference in the series.
You have 10 more opportunities and you get one less successful outcome.
Three for four today, four for nine in game two and O for three and the game one loss for
them.
The Diamondbacks were two for seven in that game one for three yesterday.
Three for 16 again today.
Again, three for 16.
They had more scoring opportunities in game.
three or as many as the Rangers had in all three games combined.
Starting pitching ERA was five for the Diamondbacks to the Rangers 1.15.
And this should be flip-flopped, right?
It really should be.
When we came into this.
Especially Kumar Rocker today doesn't deserve.
No.
He should have alone ballooned the Rangers starting pitcher ERA, but we didn't make them pay at all.
We did not.
Five innings, scoreless for Kumar Rocker.
Crazy.
Fifteen and two-thirds innings in the.
the series pitch just because they had the two and two thirds innings opener in game one one point one five
a r a they gave up two earn runs total the pitching staff two one run allowed by mackenzie gore and eight
innings pitched in game two that one that really stuck that sucks that sucks and i knew it damon
i knew it meanwhile the bullpening r a not as bad as it should be for the diamondbacks i believe
it should be worse.
3.52 relief pitching ERA for the D-back 6.35 for the Rangers.
Five earned runs allowed today.
Ugh, man, still can't get over this one.
And the Diamondbacks do have the aforementioned 13 game stretch that we've been talking about
for quite a while ahead of them now.
They have an off day on Thursday to kind of think about what's happened to them and go into Colorado.
Go to your room and think about what you've done.
That's exactly it.
man. That's how I feel.
I hope Tori told them.
Go. Go.
If there is ever a place that you wanted to get your offense to wake up, it would be Denver,
Colorado. The best bar in Denver, in fact, is where you're going to go hit some baseballs at.
But, you know, the one thing is, is that they need the starting pitching to be as good as it's been.
They need the starting pitching to continue the level of consistency and level of
excellence that they've currently reached. I'm still doubtful that they can do this for an extended
period of time, but this seems like a brand new Eduardo Rodriguez and a Michael Soroka that we don't
even know, right? Mixed with Ryan Nelson, I'm confident about four thirds, four-fifths of this
starting rotation. Actually, three-fifths. I'm still not confident about what we're going to get
out of Merrill, so that still remains to be seen in this Rocky series as well. But we will be
previewing all of that on tomorrow's show, and considering it's an off day, I can't be stealing
content from tomorrow. We have way too much time to fill. I might have to do a little song and
dance on tomorrow's show. But what we do have to talk about, though, is a few fun things, including
our upcoming interview with Luis Gonzalez. Louis Gonzalez is going to be on Monday's show,
and we are going to get a chance to talk to him about a lot of things, including Ildemar
Vargas and Cotell Marte now being the second longest tenure diamondback in franchise history. So
we're going to talk about all that with him, but we're also going to talk about Marte
on the other side of this break.
So don't you guys go anywhere.
You are watching the PHNX Diamondback Show.

And there are plenty of amazing real estate agents here in Arizona,
but one is the top, and that is Kim Caballero.
Kim Caballero Real Estate has been working in the Arizona business realm

Kim has proven strategies to help both buyers and sellers secure the best possible terms.
And most importantly, she will guide you every step of the way.
And that is something that you're just not going to get from every real estate agent.
It can be scary out there when you're buying or selling a home.
To have someone in your corner like Kim can be very valuable.
And right now in May, for any PHNX ban, it refers to Kim that ends up buying or selling their home with her.
They will receive two lower level tickets to a Cardinals home game of their choice this year,
$100 gift certificate for our store,
the PHNX merchandise store and a one-year premium level membership for PHNX.
And that's all just simply for buying or selling your home with Kim Caballero.
Kim and her husband have lived here in Arizona for over 25 years and she understands what
truly matters when choosing a home.
Let Kim put her local expertise to work for you.
Call Kim Caballero today at 480489-50-20.
That is 480-489-5012 and tell her PHNX sent you.
And let me tell you, it is, it's, it's daunting out there. We have been going through quite a bit of real estate, uh, drama ourselves over at the Montia household. And, uh, sometimes having someone that knows what they're doing can be so incredibly valuable. But more importantly, like, it gives you such a peace of mind. I, uh, I, I had no idea what we were going to do. And to have an expert, you know, guide you the way that Kim can, uh, extremely, extremely valuable. Uh, speaking of things that are, uh, uh, speaking of things that are, uh,
extremely valuable. We also have our upcoming takeover of Chase Field. And for the price of a ticket,
I think there's quite a high value coming along with that, Damon. I don't know. Maybe I'm just
a little bias here. But on June 4th, we're going to be taking over Chase Field against the Los Angeles
Dodgers. And then again, on August 25th, we will be taking over Chase Field against those Chicago
Cubs, which are, they're struggling offensively right now too. Low-key, Derek's two favorite.
teams. Oh my God. Like, like, oh, are you trying to say I had something to do with picking these
games, Damon? The audacity. I'm just saying that low key, these are probably your two favorite
teams. Don't let anyone know that, though. That's a secret between me, you, and everybody here.
I'm just not, I'm not even, I'm not even going to acknowledge that comment. Your ticket includes a
pH and X D-Bax merch of your choice, which is my favorite part of this whole deal. You get a choice
of a shirt or a hat as part of your ticket package. You also get your game ticket for the bar.
R.S. All You Can Eat section. And of course, you die hards get 20% off as you always do.
Go get your tickets now at go phtnx.com slash events immediately.
Beez is leaving.
So.
Damn, we lost Beezer.
Yeah. You know what? If he's leaving, I'm out. I'm down too.
Why do I have to stick around and finish the show?
Bees isn't going to be here anymore.
And Beez is leaving on gone too.
I guess we all can just quit whenever we feel like it.
No, we're not allowed to do that.
And you'll receive quite a bit of scrutiny.
do try to take a day off or not show up for work.
But that has nothing in relation to our final topic of the day,
which is that Cotel Marte the other day became the longest-tenured Arizona Diamondback,
second-longest-tenured Arizona Diamondback in history,
passing our guy Paul Goldschmidt for, again, that spot just behind Luis Gonzalez.
This was tonight's game, in fact, was Cotell Marte's 1094th game as a D-Back.
and he is right now exactly 100 games behind Luis Gonzalez for that coveted title of the longest tenured deback in history, which he's going to reach, I guess.
Absolutely, yeah.
Right.
I don't know.
Not according to some of the people in the chat, Damon, who already want him, trade it away or wish he would have been traded this offseason.
Well, they didn't get their wish, and now he has a no trade clause.
So we're stuck with him.
Yeah. Whether they like it or not.
We're stuck with the guy who has been an incredible baseball player the entire time.
He's been in Arizona Diamondback.
True.
Came to this team in 2017.
Pretty much has hit 280 or better close to that.
Average around 290 his entire career.
He had 329 in 2019 when he was an All-Star and he was fourth place in MVP voting.
He was an All-Star again in 24.
where he was third place in MVP voting.
And again,
Cattel just continues to be one of the best players in franchise history.
He deserves to be one of the longest tenured players.
It just sucks that this season,
when the Diamondbacks need him the most,
this is the year where, you know, he's struggling.
He's not alone.
A lot of guys in the starting lineup are struggling.
But, man, tonight there was one at bat for Cattel
that really just was frustrating.
you know, where, again, you felt like this team was about to break through.
I believe it was the eighth inning and Kattel registered the final out.
It was the exact guy you wanted up in that moment.
It was the exact guy you expected to come through for this team.
And he didn't, you know, and that unfortunately has happened entirely too much this season.
Like I said, it's been the entire offense, but I still will not be surprised at all to see Kattel turn things around and improve offensively as,
you know, as this season kind of goes on.
Cattel's worst season as a Diamondback was 22,
when he slashed 240, 321, 407,
407 with a 727 OPS.
And at this point,
I would take that in a heartbeat out of Cattel,
who's currently hitting 208, 261,
364 with a 624 OPS.
But again, Marte has just been a delight.
He wasn't even the main focus of that,
trade when they brought him over.
And he, you legitimately, I don't think, could have asked for more in a superstar.
I know there was the whatever, the issue last year.
But Kattel has been a guy that has been behind this franchise the entire time he's
been here.
He's been behind the state and the city.
He loves it here.
He loves the fan base.
He loves the organization.
Like, he is legitimately everything.
that you could ask for in a superstar.
You know, a guy that was not necessarily ever thought of to be what he has become.
And a guy that's even given this team kind of team friendly discounts at times for him to remain a member of it.
So just shout out to Cattell, one of the best dudes.
And hopefully he can get, you know, get things turned around here offensively.
Tonight was a step forward in the right direction, but would have loved to see him come through for this team, Damon,
and some of those big, big moments when he was up there at the plate.
Yeah, definitely.
And he did come through late.
But it just, it was, it was early in the game, I think, that you needed.
And I accidentally pressed the ad record thing there.
That's all right.
Instead of putting myself on the screen.
It was, you felt like, you know, he did come through in the late moments.
But a timely hit earlier in this game really could have broke things open.
He didn't get it.
It's not all just on him.
I think, no, it's not.
You're absolutely right.
shoulders a little bit more of that tonight honestly um but yeah uh it's been a bad season so far
and as you said like 280 almost every year and this year he's hitting like 220 so you're a far cry
away from that it feels like you know a tear is coming for kettel yeah uh but is it going to be too
late for this team at that point is the problem well i will i will say this i mean we embrace
could tell here. But all I can imagine is if you were a team that gave up a lot for Marte,
only for him to come over and hit what he's hitting right now, it probably would be considered
an absolute disaster. I'm sure there's a lot of teams. You also don't know what he would hit
anywhere else, right? It's a completely different timeline. He gets traded to the, you know,
AL Central and he's going against bum pitchers all the time. Like all of a sudden, you know, he's hitting
340.
He's setting the baseball world on fire.
And in the NL, we got Mizorowski and, you know,
skeins and all these studs.
It's ridiculous.
Yep.
Well, and it's been a, I mean, overall, like I said,
it's not been just to tell.
It's been a rough season so far for the entire starting lineup.
Right now, you know, just as we thought the case would be
when the season started, Damon.
Il-Domar Vargas, Nolan Arnato are carrying
you know the offense just as as i specifically you were like this is how it's going to go down and you
name those guys specifically i did and and il damar vargas being first and foremost the name that i said
you know kind of underline this guy chat and and highlight him going into the year uh because
i definitely believe that he's going to have an all-star caliber season well i'll say this much
no okay i'll let me just say i apologize el-domorrow this was another big night another big
big night for the Ildemara Vargas All-Star Agenda as he gets another huge knock.
You know, it wasn't a great game, but he came through in the biggest moment.
The debacks are now 10 and 7 in their last 17 matchups with the Texas Rangers,
and they are 9 and 8 in their last 8 less 17 road games at Texas at Globe Life Field.
So we got the Rockies coming in to play.
We'll talk about that as part of the rivalry weekend.
this weekend the diamondbacks have won 10 of their last 12 series against the Rockies dating back to
2023 and they have taken four of their last six road series against the Rockies. Merrill Kelly will be
on the mound for game one and hopefully it's the good Merrill and not the bad Merrill because those
two Merrill can be very different merrials but we thank you guys so much for stopping by we will be back
tomorrow with another 12 p.m. show so make sure to join us for that we have an off day for the
Diamondback. So let us be your baseball for the day. Make sure to join us then. And then we will also
have a postgame show on Friday night after game one of their series in Colorado. So again,
make sure to join us for all of that. Until then, you can follow us on social media. I am at cap

dogs. Mark Park. Our show is at PH&X underscore D-Backs. But as always, all roads lead to
at PHNX underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
Thank you guys so much for stopping by.
We appreciate you being here to vent with us
and to just kind of sit here and stare at the screen confused
about what we just saw.
Appreciate you guys being here.
Hope you guys join us tomorrow at 12 p.m.
