Starting point is 00:00:01 Well, the Ginger Avenger does it again. Pave and Smith continues to hit. Brandon fought, meanwhile, was excellent once again on the mound with his third quality start of the year. We are talking about the Diamondbacks, beating those Tampa Bay Rays and getting the edge in a little series that we're going to talk about here. Don't you go anywhere. We're starting in 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast right here on PHNX. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. I got my guy, Kevin Thomas, occasionally known as large intimate on the ones in twos tonight. And of course, we are talking about the Arizona Diamondbacks winning game one here in their series with the Tampa Bay raised by a score of 5 to 1. Welcome in, everybody. No, I am not turning on the cactus light. I've already told you I reviews to do that. Maybe, well, yeah, we'll see.
Starting point is 00:01:04 We'll see. Maybe we'll get that cactus light kicked on. Not tonight, though, because we're talking about Pavin Smith. Maybe Pavan's bat could power up that bad boy behind me. but of course this show is presented to you by Bet365 and our friends at Game Time. Go over to Bet365, download that app today and use our code of PHNX 365. When you sign up, you'll get some bonus bets as long as you bet $5 or more. You also go over to Game Time and use that code of PHNX and you will get $20 off your first order.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Arizona Diamondbacks win today by a score of 5 to 1. Pitching was excellent for this team, including Brandon Fott, who once again had another quality start this season. And the bullpen did their thing, including one big boy, Juan Morillo, coming out in the ninth inning, which was very exciting for me personally. But the Diamondbacks do improve to 14 and 9 on the season. They take, more importantly, most importantly, Kevin, they take a one game lead in the 1999, 1999, 1998, all-time expansion draft series. Both these teams, I've talked about it for a very long time. the Tampa Bay Rays, which I still hate to call them that. You guys know, right, that they changed their, like,
Starting point is 00:02:16 logo to a ray of sunshine. We haven't discussed this merely enough in how stupid that is. They were once the devil race. That's how they came into this world. Their mama called them the devil rays. I'm going to call them the devil raise because that's still a way better name. And both of these teams were born in the same year in 1998. Let me give you a freaky, freaky fact.
Starting point is 00:02:36 The D-backs and Rays entered today with the exact same. number of wins, 2,100. Well, guess what? The Diamondbacks now have 2,01, and the rays do not. So they take the edge in this series. The Diamondbacks have gone 2,100,2194, while the rays have gone 2,100 and 2192. So they play two less games.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Since 1998, these teams also match up in various stat categories, including average. Both teams had a batting average of nearly 255. Diamondbacks 255, raised 254. On base percentage, Diamondbacks is 324. The raise was 323. Walk rate. The Diamondbacks as a team has a franchise, 8.7.
Starting point is 00:03:26 The raise are 8.5. Home run rate, 2.8 home runs per game to the raise 2.7 home runs per game. And stolen base rate, 73.5% for the Diamondbacks to 72.3%. these two teams, they're destined to do this forever, I guess. They also have the same number of playoff victories all time at 28. Make it make sense. The most important thing is the Diamondbacks have a World Series and the Rays absolutely do not.
Starting point is 00:03:54 The Diamondbacks also are still snakes while the rays are a goddamn ray of light, which is the dumbest thing I could imagine, and I still can't believe that's happened. They didn't deserve to win today, and they absolutely didn't. The pitching got the job done today, but the offense was rolling. The Diamondbacks did their thing. Could feel like this was going to be a low scoring game early on, but Diamondbacks definitely had, you know,
Starting point is 00:04:17 a little bit more going on. Geraldo Perdomo stole his 17th base in this game. That leads all short stops in Major League Baseball. And Corbyn Carroll started a brand new on-base streak, hitting streak after seeing his previous streak end on Sunday. Corbyn today was one for three with a double, two runs scored, and a walk. So, again, he continues to do his thing. but a lot of offense from the Diamondbacks in this one,
Starting point is 00:04:41 Tim Tawa showing off the power of positivity, solo home run added into the Diamondbacks lead in the fifth inning. That was a 387 foot home run with 107.6 mile per hour exit velo. So that was kind of, didn't go very far, but went there fast. But the big dog in this game offensively is Pave and Smyth. And Pave and Smith continues to be the big dog for this team offensively as a whole. He was incredible tonight. He had a double in the first inning.
Starting point is 00:05:11 He did not score. He was stranded. Then in the third inning, Payvon hit a two-run home run to give the Diamondbacks the lead. He also walked in the eighth inning. And he has just been incredible. That home run that he hit went 420 feet, which you know that's something that made me giggle.
Starting point is 00:05:28 And because it did, it is our Sanderson Ford deep drive of the game. Pavin just continues to do it for this team this season. I mean, he deserves all the. the accolades, all the accolades. And it's just been a very pleasant, it's a very pleasant surprise, right? We knew Pavin Smith eventually was going to be a much better player than he's been in the past. But this is, this is different. And we have more from Pavin. Here's Pavan on
Starting point is 00:05:55 that home run and exactly what he saw there. Yeah, it seemed like he was, I hit a slatter his first time up and he seemed like he was throwing a lot more splitters to guys after me. and I was kind of, I wasn't all the way sitting off speed, but I knew he was going to try to pitch around me a little bit and got to 3-2 kind of battled, but still thinking he might come off-speed and kind of just reacted to the fastball. Pavan Smith has been not only a pleasant surprise, as I said,
Starting point is 00:06:28 but, you know, the Diamondback's best hitter. Right now, Pavan is hitting 397 with a 500 on-base percentage and a 1.259, 0.5.4.4. So the man is doing it offensively at the dish for the team this year. He talked a bit about, you know, hitting as a DH, right? And it was interesting to hear him kind of discuss some of this stuff. Basically, you know, being a DH, he has more time, you know, you're not going out there defensively on the other half of the inning. So he talked about, you know, going and hitting in the cage.
Starting point is 00:07:03 He's talked about, you know, looking at the iPad, even though he doesn't have a tremendous amount of, iPad use doesn't like the iPad too much, but he said he did. He has been using it to kind of get caught up and see what adjustments he can make. And he's just been on a hot streak right now. Here's what he had to say about his hitting. Yeah, it seems, I think the main difference this year is just like being able to make adjustments quicker. You know, obviously I haven't had a stretch where I need to make major adjustments. But at the same time, there's certain fields that I can recognize a little easier.
Starting point is 00:07:36 know when I'm off in a bag and make adjustments mid-game where I feel like in years past it's taken a little longer and those bat bats seem to pile up so the ball definitely doesn't or it feels like it's coming in a little slower which is nice yeah I mean I hit with I wasn't it's not exactly adjustments just getting my feels in I hit with the anchor like pretty much if I think I'm going to hit the next inning I go in there and just kind of just get my feel take like even if it's only like three, four swings, just feel it and then kind of take it into the about. Well, I don't think that there, I mean, maybe there's one man that might deserve it a little more, and we'll talk about him shortly. But for now, Pave and Smith is our king snake of this game.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Again, two for three in this one with a double, a home run, and two RBI. And just an impressive line so far this season. We still also see that little basketball celebration? before the game, Tori was asked about that, and he straight up refused to answer the question. He said that he has been sworn to secrecy on what their little jump shot celebration means. And yeah, much like those city connectors,
Starting point is 00:08:47 these being the only ones that didn't actually leak, Diamondbacks are good at keeping their cards close to the vest there. Did they not actually leak, though? They did not actually leak. I mean, they leaked it to me. And then I did not leak them. So what can I say except you're welcome. What?
Starting point is 00:09:06 I'm more so asking you. That's not to you guys. I know you guys want to see them. Can you tell people that the jerseys on social media that are circulating right now are a real or be fake? The one that says Arizona Diamondbacks across the front is fake. Not fake. It's just not the final design. Not the genuine article?
Starting point is 00:09:22 So we talked about this a little bit. But the one that ended up on eBay was essentially a prototype. So it's not that that jersey wasn't a final. contender potentially for what the diamondbacks were going to go with, but I have seen the jersey myself. I've seen the jersey on Corbyn Carroll and I will tell you right now that
Starting point is 00:09:42 it does not say that it does not have that font. It does not look like that. A lot of it is very similar though and all I can say is I can't wait for you guys see the hat. The hat is fire. I haven't talked about how how fire the hat is but the hat is fire. I also told one of our friends in the chat
Starting point is 00:09:57 that the hat, I'm 99% sure has been sitting in plain sight in front of our eyes in the team shop at one point. It's not there anymore, but I know very, very, very much that it was just right there, right in front of our eyes. We didn't even know that we were looking at the new City Connect hat. So there's a little tease for you. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Lawrence Harmon says City Connects won't have the full team name. No, they won't. I will tell you that. What else we got? We got any other questions? Michael says Derek, please stop making me want a new hat. You're going to want this hat so bad. You're going to want this hat so bad, Michael.
Starting point is 00:10:36 The hat might be better than the jersey. Stephen says I'm leaking again. Sorry, Stephen bananas. Sometimes I can't help myself from leaking. It's hot in here. I'm leaking all off my forehead. But yeah, no, there's some, there is, let's see, Luna Forte says Unowch reported knockoff jersey sellers as a new leak when they just based
Starting point is 00:10:56 on the leak prototype. Yeah, that one that's going on. around. That's all I'll say is it might not be far off from that. You might very much be looking at the Diamondback City Connect jersey, but it's, it's not that one. It's not exactly that one. I still don't know about the number on the back, so I didn't get to see the back of it, but I don't like that number situation. The whole font situation on that jersey is bad and awful and can go away. But the pinstripes, the little, if you haven't noticed, there's there's snake skin in there and the gradient. That's all. That's that's not going anywhere, folks. So. So just wait until those drop. By the way, I will remind you that if you were wondering why they haven't dropped yet and think they're going to drop tomorrow or the next day, despite maybe somebody on social media saying right before it leak that I knew that they were going to leak, I will say this, that they still have two more jerseys to introduce.
Starting point is 00:11:47 So just as a reminder, that's what my guy, Tyler, wanted everybody to remember, is that there are two more jerseys that still need to make their actual debut before the Diamondbacks City Connect make its debut. and that jersey is supposed to be worn on May 9th, which is coming up here by my calculations very soon. So we should have more on the City Connect jerseys and the whole outfit, and it looks great. I think it looks like fire.
Starting point is 00:12:11 People might disagree with me, but wait until you see Heraldo Ferdoma wearing it. Holy crap. Wait, just wait with the high socks. It's electric. Speaking of electric, Josh Naylor has been electric. Pave and Smith had been electric. Tori refused to call them a platoon. Maybe I'm wrong for doing so.
Starting point is 00:12:26 but that whole situation over there at first base, D.H. Along with Randall Gritchick has been very positive for this team. Naylor added an RBI single in the eighth inning that kind of lock this one up for the Diamondbacks. He was two for four today with one RBI. And he is currently hitting 341 with a 955 OPS. So the Diamondbacks situation as far as replacing someone of Christian Walker's caliber over there at first base still might not be as good defensively as an option. but so far the results offensively are much better than what's being produced by guys that left this team. And of course, you know what that means.
Starting point is 00:13:02 It's time once again to spy on our exes. So let's do a little spying on our exes here, boys and girls. I have a stat that probably, like this was maybe going to be a throwing shade. And then I decided that it was too gross, too mean to be a throwing shade. But former Arizona Diamondback, Jacques Peterson, is over. for 40 in his last 40 at bats. I will repeat that once again. Jock Peterson in his last 40 at bats is over 40.
Starting point is 00:13:38 He's currently hitting 0.55. He's hitting 0.55. Not 100, not 155, not 550. He's hitting 0.55. Again, I don't know how this happens to a baseball player, especially somebody that produced for the Diamondbacks at the level that Peterson did last year. But all I can say is overall, it feels very good that the Diamondbacks decided to go with Pavin Smith and Josh Naylor via trade rather than pay Jack Peterson what he wanted to be paid. Maybe the same could be said for Christian Walker.
Starting point is 00:14:17 I don't ever. I don't, all I want to do is sing the Walker song. That's all I want to do. I want to sing it for you guys. I want to sing on the show. I want to play the funny video I made. can't do that anymore, but the consolation here is that Christian Walker is currently hitting 188. He has two home runs on the season and five RBI. In fact, me and Alex Weiner, I can't
Starting point is 00:14:36 take any credit for this because it's mostly Alex Winer from Arizona Sports 98.7, but we were discussing it, if you took half of Pavin Smith's hits and gave them to Jock Peterson, half of his hits and gave them to Jock Peterson, Jock Peterson would be hitting 268 instead of 0.55. And if you took away half of, of, of, of, of, uh, Paven's hits. Like, Paven just donates those hits out of sympathy to Jack Peterson. Paymond Smith would still be hitting over 200. He would be hitting like 207, I think is a calculation that we game to. That's how good Payman Smith has been this year.
Starting point is 00:15:11 Um, and now I feel like this turned into throwing shade, even though that's not really the direction I wanted to go. Uh, Stephen Michael is absolutely right. Mike Hayes and wizardry. And it's not just that because there's another guy who we're going to talk about, who had a big knight who did. definitely also equally deserved to be Kingsnake. And that's one Brandon Fought.
Starting point is 00:15:29 We are going to talk about him on the other side of this break. Don't forget, Mike Hazen just locked him up to an extension. So more Mike Hazen wizardry. But we will be talking about all that on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the PH&X Diamondback show. Well, I would throw shade, but I don't have my shady rays with me. And I really don't know where they are right now.

Starting point is 00:18:08 Visit Empire Today slash P-H-N-X for full details. Well, let's take a look real fast, and now we got some super chats here, Kev. What do we got? Yeah, first two super chat got Benjamin Hundley who says, Pavin needs to work on pimping his homers better. Okay. Pavan might be the Ginger Avenger, but there is, I don't know if there's a lot of swag in this fan. And that's fine. That's fine. I will take my swagless ginger, uh, hitting 397 and I will love it. And I'm fine with it. But, you know, yeah, no, I'm with you. I love a little bit more style in my guys.
Starting point is 00:18:44 Uh, what else we got? Um, M says personally, I was losing it over Jmart, the pain. Good news, though, J-Mart, it still sounds like it's just some arm fatigue. Tori Lavello told us after the game that he just needs one more day. We're going to talk about that here a little bit, including having some video here from Tori. So hopefully everything is good with J-Mart, just some dead arm, which sounds a lot worse than it is, but I promise you, it is, it sounds like it's not going to be a very long stint.
Starting point is 00:19:14 In fact, Tori confirmed there's not going to be any imaging or anything done for J-Mart. Benjamin Hunley says, who told Naylor that he's the next Rick, Ricky Henderson? Let's talk about it. I don't like it. I don't think a lot of you like it. I do appreciate what Josh Naylor's done this year. It's not like he hasn't been successful in stealing some stolen bases, but it to me kind of feels more like a novelty rather than something you should be doing all the time. Like, for me, it makes me laugh.
Starting point is 00:19:43 Ah, ha, ha. Oh, look, there goes Josh Naylor stealing another base. It's not so funny when he gets out on the base path. And again, that's everything in baseball. Everything's great when things are working. They're not when they're not. But I'm with you. I appreciate the fact that Naylor is pressing the action on the base path more than some of our speedier runners.
Starting point is 00:20:01 But again, I don't really want to see it as often as we're seeing it. Jim Bridger in the chat says, missed you stinky snakes. Keep chase stinky. No, Jim, we are not. We're brushing our teeth. We're all brushing our teeth, Jim. And I don't know. I'm going to say.
Starting point is 00:20:16 I'm just going to call him Brandon Mathers. That's as close as I can get. So shout out to my brother who took me to our first game this season. Great win. Thank you so much for your super chat. We appreciate you all. Our guy AZ Katz G says, going to see a lot of Kingsnake Paven this season.
Starting point is 00:20:34 Hell yeah, we are. Hell yeah. Well, another guy that we might see a lot of King Snakes for is one Brandon Fott, who once again had another great outing today. He was really leaning heavily on his sinker usage and his change up today, sinker was 33% of the time. And that was something pretty interesting from Brandon Fott. We have more from him in the clubhouse on using that sinker.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Yeah, it's just a different pitch to get me back in the zone. I say that because in more most it felt terrible. And I was like, oh, boy, but we were able to use the sinker pretty good today. And we got good results. I know he's very quiet there in the video. and I assure you he's even quieter in person. You guys are probably hearing him better than I actually did. But Stephen Bananas in the chat says,
Starting point is 00:21:22 I told you he's our ace, Derek. And right now Brandon Fott is absolutely pitching like an ace. In fact, baseball's funny because the only run that scored against Brandon Fought came on a Cameron Mizzner double there in the second inning. That double, that double, Kevin, you want to know how stupid baseball is? that double had an XBA, an expected batting average of 0.060, 0.060, a 6% chance of falling in for a hit based on expected batting average. And it did for a double. And then he scores again there on a Jake Magnum RBI single.
Starting point is 00:22:03 That would be the only run allowed of the day by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Brandon Fott goes out there. He goes six innings strong, gives up four hits, one earned run, did not walk any. and struck out five. We have more from Tori Lavallo after the game on his guy, Brandon, five. Well, just that. Staying away from that beginning is always what a pitcher is trying to do and get to. I don't think he really puts himself into harm's way by walking batterers.
Starting point is 00:22:35 He's always in the pocket. He's always around the zone. He's always falling in game plan. He's always one pitch away from getting out and getting back into a little bit of a rhythm. So that's been him. You know, six innings book it. That's what I've been saying for a couple of years. But he's given us that because he's able to just duplicate his pitches,
Starting point is 00:22:53 his sequencing, and he follows a game plan, gets him to do good rhythm, and he starts chipping away at really quick, easy outs. Brandon Fott, again, that was his third quality start of the year. He pretty much has gone out there and given the Diamondbacks six-inning strong every time he goes out there, which is what Brandon Fott does. And he almost gave him a seventh inning, but because he really just cruised through that six. The sixth inning, it just seemed like Brandon Fott was getting stronger as the game went on.
Starting point is 00:23:24 First here, we'll hear from Brandon Fott on getting stronger throughout the outing. And then we'll also hear from Tori Lovallo on why he didn't send him out there for the seventh. Yeah, I think the sixth inning was my best thing. I felt the best in the sixth. So yes, I would say that. I think as you go, you get a better feel for your pitches. whether that be off speed or fastball. So I think today we got stronger against what I.
Starting point is 00:23:50 No, not really. You know, we get into that pitch range. And I agree with you. We get into that pitch range, into that hunter pitch range. You know, we had a pretty good plan moving forward with the three guys that we ended up using. And Shelby would have been available to close the game for us.
Starting point is 00:24:10 But no. And I totally agree with you that the sixth inning was the cleanest for me. It was super easy. He just went to work. I felt like he was showing signs of fatigue in the fifth. His ball started to cut a little bit. Some of the numbers weren't the same. And, you know, the pitching coach, Cap and I had a good discussion about it.
Starting point is 00:24:30 And we just said, we'll keep our eye on him through the six and see where he's at. So that was kind of the right decision, in my opinion. The first thing Tori answered was actually my question about Brandon Fotton. and the first, you know, what he's changed this year and how he's not giving up that big inning. And that's what Tori said when he said that exactly that he's not giving up the beginning. Brandon Fott was at 93 pitches. There's a good chance that if they send him out there for the seventh, then all of this wonderful work that he put in, you know, kind of could be wasted.
Starting point is 00:25:01 Not to say that he would have, but there's no reason in a game like this, especially with a four run lead that they needed to run Brandon Fought back out there. However, with the way that the bullpen has kind of been taxed, I understand people thinking about that or at least having that in the back of their mind. Here's fought on his outing overall, and then we also have him on discussing getting his fourth win of the season. At first, I didn't feel the best, but we're able to, I think the fastball command felt terrible at the beginning of the game. And I think that's where the sinker comes into play. And it's a huge advantage to have and start throwing that.
Starting point is 00:25:38 So we threw that a lot today. and then there in the 6th we were able to jump back on the four seam and get that thing rolling. So it felt good. Once we settled in, Gabby was great back there and was able to calm us down and keep us on track. I think after the two homers, that helped settle us in pretty good. And we were able to go from there. Well, here's the thing. Brandon Fott has slowly become the Diamondbacks most consistent starter.
Starting point is 00:26:09 And you could even argue he was that. over last year too. So it's awesome to see him having success and, and, you know, again, putting it together because there are a number of Brandon fought outings that I'm sure if you went in, and again, this is probably stupid to say because you could probably say this about a lot of pictures, but there are a lot of, if you went in and took out the one crooked number ending from a lot of Brandon fought starts over his career, he might have one of the best ERAs in Major League Baseball, right? It feels like when he does, when things go sideways on him,
Starting point is 00:26:38 You can't really predict it could happen early in the game. It could happen closer to the end of his outing. But even when they do go sideways on him, he does a great job of getting things back on track. Now the big difference really feels like fought is not letting things go in that direction. Also, we have an appearance from Gert Jr. in the chat, and I've never been happier. I can't wait to meet you in real life, Gert Jr. He says, wonder if the Cubs are actually good or just a bluff early start. Cubs had another amazing win comeback victory over the Los Angeles, Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Angeles Dodgers and starting to look like that team has no quit in them. But Diamondbacks seem to have no quit in them. Like I said, this team improves to 14, 14 wins on the season. They are now 14 and 9 and the bullpen. Looks incredible. Once again, solid night from the bullpen. Tea time, tea time, tea time. I'm teed up right now. Ryan Thompson. We talked about my time in Vegas. We also talked about the John Cena match. Neither one of us were very pleased with it. He went out. out there after me pumping him up through full of wrestling knowledge and went one inning only walked one. Beaky baby continues to be good for this team got himself in a little bit of trouble
Starting point is 00:27:47 got out of it with a double play he went one innings pitch two hits allowed and then our big fellow Juan Murillo going out there in the ninth and again I got you got to kind of like the fact that this guy that just got called up was put in the high leverage situation even though a five to one ball game might not be really high leverage he went out there got it done one innings pitch, one walk from him. So the again, oh, and a strikeout for, for him. So I'm fully teed up right now. I am absolutely the, that Travis Scott appearance like watching Joe Mads of
Starting point is 00:28:21 like up in the pitch. And isn't meltdown by Travis Scott. Yeah. There's too much Travis Scott right now on this episode. Just like there was too much Travis Scott, WrestleMania for sure. Oh, my God. But Tanner says, Mo Rillo looks good so far.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Yeah, because his name almost sounds like. Monta. So that's the reason why. He's a star. No, I've been excited. That big fella had himself quite the spring. He was really impressive. He throws hard, throwing around 99, 100 miles an hour. And yeah, this bullpen continues to adapt. I think that's what we're seeing is, you know, there are guys that are hungry. There is Dre Jameson in the clubhouse with a Scooby-Doo belt and matching shoes ready to stunt on them hose. And that's just one of the guys they called up. talking about this. And I mean, honestly, not to say it made me look super smart, but when we were basically having the meltdown over what happened in that first game against the Cubs,
Starting point is 00:29:19 I was saying there's there's no more, there shouldn't be any more waiting. There shouldn't be any more waiting. Dre Jameson was had a sub two ERA. J.P. Fire Eisen had a sub one ERA. And these, this is in Reno. This is in the Pacific Coast League. So it's like that again, it's even more impressive. You call these guys up and I'm telling you, man, Drey Jamison is going to be something special for this team. I'm saying that just based on his apparel, his clothes. He had like jeans on the night with little diamonds on them. They were fire. I can't, I could never pull something like that off. Derek, people in the chat are asking, you know, because showing up looking good is one thing.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Yeah. But Lawrence here says it looks like you feel good today. How is your energy and did you drink water today? Oh yeah. No, I drank lots of water. Thank you for asking. Thank you for noticing that I'm not so dead as I was yesterday. Yes, I got myself 10 hours of actual sleep, which is probably the amount of sleep I got combined over my four-day trip to Las Vegas. And then we also have the fact that, yes, I did drink water, but this was real water.
Starting point is 00:30:19 Like actual H2O, it wasn't vodka poured into a water bottle with a little bit of a wide punch on top and then shake it around, which is basically one of the things I drank all weekend in Las Vegas. So it's amazing how the body can rebound once you start treating it like you should. It's something that you should all do for sure. Jim Bridger says I am rocking Scooby-Doo underwear right now.
Starting point is 00:30:42 I am not, Jim, but I am rocking clean underwear. And that's something that once again, I want to remind you to do, no matter how many games the Diamondbacks win in a row. But this one, this was a big one, like I said, Diamondbacks. Take the edge. Take the edge in the 1998 all-time expansion series now with 20, 2,01, 2,101 1,101 victories this season.
Starting point is 00:31:09 And before we get out of here, I guess, well, do we have anything else that I missed on my clips besides the stuff about the guys that I think I got everything, right? We have, we still have Lavello on J-Mart. We have the Jake McCarthy conversation still yet to have. And then Brandon Fott also spoke about winning his fourth straight. Oh, let's hear from Brandon Fott on winning his fourth street. I think just going deep in games.
Starting point is 00:31:33 Obviously, you credit to our offense for helping that be the case. And if they keep hitting like they do, we get more wins. So I think it's a win-win for both sides. And how would we get wins if it worked for them. I want to say that, thought is like the coolest customer that I've ever seen.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Like, his demeanor is exactly how it is all the time. His demeanor there that you see in the clubhouse is the same demeanor he has on the mound. It's the same demeanor when he knocks down the liner and then casually picks it up and tosses over first base like he did in this game. This guy just doesn't know panic. And I think that that is a trait that is going to take him very far in this game. And I think that it's something that we heard from Pavin Smith. We asked Pavin Smith about if there was anything that he took away from Jock Peterson, coincidentally enough, considering somebody that I just kind of trashed here early in this episode.
Starting point is 00:32:33 But he said that Jock never overreacted, you know, to like a bat at bat. He just came back to the dugout. He'd work on his stuff and just kind of move along. And I think Pavin has kind of learned the D.H role and what you can do to stay busy during that downtime and how you can stay productive. You know, mostly that's the thing. He said that and essentially, you know, making the adjustments that he's made at the plate, making the adjustments that he's made, you know, based on what pitchers are throwing and making those adjustments faster.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Usually he kind of discussed having the waste in it bad at times in order to make those adjustments. So hopefully, Pavan can continue this hot streak. More importantly, hopefully some of these guys that you guys are bringing up can get out of their slumps that they're hitting in right now because, my God, we need Gino back. and we need Lordis Guriel back, right? Lordis Guriel now hitting 171. Gino's hitting 152. He was 0 for 2 today.
Starting point is 00:33:32 Guriel, 0 for 3 today, but at least he had an RBI sack fly? I don't know. This is not great from the guys beyond, I guess, the 5 through 8 hitters because even Tim Tawa had a home run today. And his numbers don't look great, but Tim Tawa still has a 200 average with an 839 OPS. So he is absolutely getting, at least adding something to this team, even though his batting average isn't great right now. On the other side of this break,
Starting point is 00:34:01 we are going to go ahead and take a look at the numbers from this game. And then we're also going to give you an update on some injuries before we get out of here. Appreciate you guys. As always, love you guys so much. You're watching the PHNX Diamondback show. Of course, another way I made it through my trip to Las Vegas was with pure edibles. And that's a great way for you to have yourself a great time. Pure Edibles, they were founded right here.
Starting point is 00:34:25 in Arizona they're available in 130 dispensary statewide they were originally founded and made in flagstaff arizona at noble dispensary uh the home of pure edibles and now they're made manufactured right here in Phoenix Arizona pure gummies are designed to be ripped a bit in half making them easily shareable or easy to dial in your exact dose and more importantly you can take a look at the package you know exactly what you're going to get what effects you're going to get they'll be clearly listed on each tin pure is a fully fledged candy company offering gummies. Their version of Starbursts that they call kicks. They got some chews, which are soft candies like carmoles, and then also hard candies. Their gummy helps for some sleep
Starting point is 00:35:05 support as well as candies with uplifting effects. So you can make sure, once again, you can see those effects, clearly listed on the tin, and make sure you're enjoying exactly what you want to enjoy. I suggest the sleep gummies because it's a great way to get your sleep schedule back on track. And after a while, you won't even need them because you'll be getting yourself into a groove, much like branded Fott. That's probably not a great comparison. But get yourself into a groove sleepwash, at least, with some pure gummies. Go find yourself some pure edible products right now from one of over 130 dispensaries across Arizona.
Starting point is 00:35:36 And speaking of our favorite thing to do, which is Road Trip Circle K, is the place to go for road trips. I got myself a little beef jerky action. I got based on Shane's suggestion. I definitely got some yogurt pretzels because the minute he brought those up on the show, I didn't stop craving them until we left on Thursday. And of course, you can stop by Circle K, wherever you're going. You need to go on a road trip. Stop by right now.
Starting point is 00:35:59 A great day to stop by there would be on April 24th, because that is another Inner Circle Fuel Day, where Inner Circle members can save 40 cents per gallon from 6am to 1159 p.m. at night. You can also enter the CircleK Big Giveaway. That's going to happen on May 6th. Customers can enter to win prizes, customers, and so much more. Visit CircleK.com slash big dash giveaway.
Starting point is 00:36:21 But more importantly, join the Inner Circle for free right now by downloading the CircleK app. Terms and conditions apply at participating locations. Visit CircleK.com for details. All right, well, let's take a look at our numbers that are always checked out by Desert Financial. We always thank Desert Financial for making sure our finances and numbers are straight. Diamondbacks outscore the raise 5 to 1. They out hit the raise 7 to 6. Diamondbacks were 2 for 5 with runners in scoring position to the raise 1 for 6.
Starting point is 00:36:49 The extra base hits. Diamondbacks had 4 to the raise 2. then of course that wacky expected batting average 2.95 for the Diamondbacks to 310 for the raise. Big thing here, Diamondbacks were pretty efficient with runners in scoring position. They were able to get those guys in. And more importantly, the pitching today, again, was phenomenal for this team. Brandon fought. I mean, I don't know what more you could say about what he has done for this team and what he has become for this team. Same thing for Payman Smith. Both of these guys are guys that came up from the Diamondback system.
Starting point is 00:37:23 Both of these guys are guys that were very, I guess, I don't know where Pavin really ranked with high prospects, but I know when he was drafted, Pavin was thought of very highly. Brandon fought, same thing. They've both had their struggles. Pavin has really struggled at times. And yet here we are seeing him have, you know, one of the best seasons of his career.
Starting point is 00:37:45 And he's doing it at a time when the Diamondbacks kind of needed him the most. This is a guy that hit 188 in 2023 with a 191 at bat. So he was given plenty of opportunity that season. And to be where he was versus where he's at now is huge, especially, like I said, this is the time where the Diamondbacks invested in him. They decided to go to Pave and Smith and not really go out there in a free agency and pursue another guy. They did bring in Josh Naylor via trade. They brought Randall Gritchick back.
Starting point is 00:38:16 And all three of these guys kind of contribute here to the DH role. and we know Josh Naylor is mostly over there at first base, but Pavin Smith also contributes there as well. So it's just, it's really cool to see these guys that have been in the system now performing the way they are. Corby and Carroll was an anomaly. He was a guy that we didn't even really have time to fawn over too much in the minor league system before he was up with the big league club doing big league club things.
Starting point is 00:38:42 But, you know, again, Pavin Smith, a guy that's kind of toiled around at a major league level since 2020, finally putting it together. And not only that, but the Diamondbacks need it because those guys, the 5 through 8 guys, those are guys that contributed quite a bit last year, contributed quite a bit in their time being here, and so far haven't really been able to get the job done. So it's good on Pavin Smith, man.
Starting point is 00:39:05 It's really cool to see. What else do we have here? We got some super chats. We do indeed have some super chats. Stephen Bannis says, plug in the cactus and let's celebrate. No, I'm not doing it. I told you somebody's going to have to get out the drill. I bet it's not even charged.
Starting point is 00:39:22 I bet they don't even have the battery charger here. I bet they want me to bring my battery charger from home, charge the battery, and then drill through that bookcase, and then pull the cord through the back and plug it in myself. I bet I have to bring an extension cord from home too. I have to do everything around here when it comes to manual labor. And I kind of, I'm going to say something that I probably will regret, but kind of miss saw a little bit.
Starting point is 00:39:46 he just sawl used to do the dad stuff around here i can't believe i just said those words publicly don't tell them i said it god damn i swear to god but anyway what else we got the laurence this cactus celebration no more no more with this cactus i will i swear to god either this cactus is getting turned on or i'm going to remove it from this set forever and make sure nobody ever sees this cactus alive as long as i am alive uh super chat from candis uh two super chat chats from Candice. Thank you so much, Candish. She says, just wanted to say, I love you all. Aw. Well, we love you too, Candice.
Starting point is 00:40:21 Also, Derek, the fact that you think that we want to have an extension cord here is laughable. It's not, it's not that we don't have one. It's that Shane's going to yell at me for using it because it needs to go with something. There's already, already has a designated use. It's meant to go out when we're doing stuff remotely or whatever the hell. But that's it. Piece of Yoshi says, ah, Ping and Saul as we speak. don't you dare don't you dare
Starting point is 00:40:47 uh girth junior says rip cactus light yeah well it had a good run uh and two bmc says the ghost of the cactus light wand forever probably probably but you know what won't haunt me uh this this game this game won't because this game was two hours and 21 minutes and if every baseball game could be two hours and 21 minutes long i think we would all be living a better life wouldn't we all enjoy baseball better uh make the pitch clock shorter i don't know figure it out some way. I also want to complain since I'm here complaining about stuff and how long things take about the light rail breaking down on Jefferson and 7th Street. Did any of you get stuck in
Starting point is 00:41:24 that? Because I did. And then I just made one wrong turn after another, which just exasperated the situation for me getting to the office in time to do this show. So I got to give a shout out. Got to give a shout out while we're here giving shoutouts to Tori Lavallo for a five minute press conference for Brandon Fott and Pave and Smith, both being ready fairly quickly once we got in there. and both of them giving us about three minutes. But the funniest thing was the fact that Brandon Fott had started kind of his press conference while we were still talking to Pavin Smith. And in the middle of Pave and Smith answering a question, he proceeded to look at Steve Gilbert and said, yes, Steve, I can see that you want to go talk to Brandon real bad. That was hilarious.
Starting point is 00:42:05 He said, I can see he's doing a little one step, two step. He was doing like a little, like almost like a little, I got to go to the bathroom dance because he couldn't. Yeah. We don't look. We have, we have a finite. amount of time to get answers from these guys when we're in the clubhouse. And boy, do we love it when they're fast, but we can't do two press conferences, things. We can't do two, you know, media things at once. We've got to keep those media scrums to one at a time. But I do appreciate
Starting point is 00:42:27 the efficiency, especially when I'm trying to get here to give you guys this wonderful show that we do, that I love to do. Speaking of which, one thing I did want to know is, and of course, if you're a diehard, you can drop this in the Discord. If you're on Twitter, send us a message. You can put it in the chat. But I'd love to hear from you guys. what exactly do you guys want? Do you guys are okay with the show starting later? Because then I can be in the clubhouse to get this information. Or would you guys like this show to get started 10, 15 minutes after the game ends?
Starting point is 00:42:58 That still seems like it's going to be an impossible task for me to get from that building over here in 10 to 15 minutes. But again, just love to hear from you guys because we want to bring you the show that you want to see. And I know sometimes this clubhouse stuff kind of doesn't make it to the postgame show on air and such. I think, yeah, I think I'd love to hear from you guys on that. But Jim wants a live studio audience. Okay. But Jim, that's going to definitely involve you showering. Just want to throw that out there.
Starting point is 00:43:29 Like, there will be no stinkiness in PHNXHQ. I as mayor cannot stand for it, but I do appreciate you wanting to come through. We love doing that. And I'll tell you, we're going to be doing some watch-alongs. We'll also have our pool party that Shane is, is, making into his birthday celebration for somehow. I don't even understand how he's hijacking our pool party. But we're going to have some fun events.
Starting point is 00:43:51 We're going to have some cool stuff over at Heeliver Resorts and Casino. So make sure to join us for that. I also have to tease this. Tomorrow we have a huge announcement on this show. A very, very big announcement. An announcement that's going to make me at least a very happy boy. Somebody that fulfilled his promise. So I can't wait to make that announcement tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:44:11 So make sure to join us for our Wednesday show at 2 p.m. And I will be revealing before we get out of there on that day this big announcement. So make sure to tune in for that. Of course, we do appreciate you guys for being here. I see people like it later. So that's great. I appreciate it. Karen says she's, I'm dead to her.
Starting point is 00:44:31 Is this only because her name's Karen? I mean, I didn't. Well, it's not just because her name's Karen. It's because of what you said about her name being Karen. The society is the one that made the name Karen into what it is. I had nothing to do with that. I had nothing to do with that. And we'll lead it at that.
Starting point is 00:44:45 But on the other side of this break, we're going to talk about Jake McCarthy being optioned to AAA Reno, Jorge Barrosa being called up, and an update on AJ Puck. So, of course, don't you go anywhere. You're watching the P.H.NX. Diamondback show. Well, it's hot.
Starting point is 00:45:01 It's getting hotter. And there's no stopping it. But what you can do is you can contact all pro-shade concepts, and you can extend your outdoor living area. It's a missed trip. Derek, you've been called out. What happened?
Starting point is 00:47:04 You've been fact checked. What? Lawrence says, yeah, you said it was specifically warranted for that one Karen. And Groundhog Mama knows the truth. She says, you said the name fits me. Yeah. And you're trying to say it's more society. fault than Derek Montia's fault
Starting point is 00:47:18 when I know, you know, the chat knows what really was said on the last podcast. You can take it out. You want to take it. If you want to take it negatively, again, I just said her name very much fits her. It's Karen. A good thing for her as anything else. What am I supposed to call you a different name?
Starting point is 00:47:36 You're Kevin. You're large intimate. I can't just call you something else now. Come on. That's ridiculous. But I'm just trying to talk my way out of it as well. Jake McCarthy was optioned to AAA Reno in a oddly quiet move. He was just added to the transaction page without a corresponding move being made. Usually the reason why the Diamondbacks don't send out an official move to the media like they did or didn't do was because they didn't have the corresponding move or they hadn't told the player that they were getting called up.
Starting point is 00:48:10 In this case, it was Jorge Barrosa being called up. And here was more from Tori Lavallo on why Jake was sent down to AAA Reno. Jake has had a tough run of it. You know, sometimes this is a savage business. And, you know, he's been one of our best players in a couple of different years. And it just, it wasn't, the game wasn't working for him. There were, you know, the outbats and the numbers matter. It's just where we are.
Starting point is 00:48:39 So it's unfortunate. And then there were some mistakes that were being made. around his game that we felt like it was all connected. So the at-bats, you know, going whatever he was, it's hard to do. It's hard to go through. It's easy to do because the league is so good. But once you're there and it's before you and it starts to trickle into other parts of your game, such as, you know, the pick-offs or some of the plays that he was failing to make on defense, we couldn't help but start to take notice that just a little bit of a reboot might matter to him. He wasn't comfortable.
Starting point is 00:49:14 with the decision. I didn't expect him to be comfortable with the decision, but I know Jake is built on the right things and he's going to find his way back here because I do believe, and I will say this, like I said it every year, our best outfield and our best team has Jake in it. Yeah, I think it takes a little bit of a little bit of a shift in the metal approach. It's frustrating, you know. I know what I told him is just look like you're going on a two or three week road trip and get your butt back here as soon as possible. So I've used that one on him before. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But the one time I referenced it, I think it was during,
Starting point is 00:49:47 his breakout season was 22, if I can remember correctly. We sent him down and he sat in my office and said, you're sending the wrong FN player down. I'm going to go down and dominate, hit 400 for you, and I'll be back. And I reminded him of that conversation, so I'm hoping it flushes like that. How many options do you have left by then? I don't know. I don't know that.
Starting point is 00:50:06 I have very little to do with the up downs, Barry. So I just, I walk in. Okay. Okay. Let's go. Yeah, yeah. So the options is the last thing. I'm aware of.
Starting point is 00:50:18 I wanted to play that whole thing because I really wanted to hear, I wanted some of you to hear some of those things that Tori had to say. And yes, he's senior tweets is basically what I'm saying. He's senior tweets. But more importantly there, Jake has been a guy that has been fairly resilient. And when he told Tori that I'm going to go down to Reno and I'm going to hit 400 and I'm going to be back, it's kind of what he did. It's kind of what he did, right?
Starting point is 00:50:45 So the thought here was that Jake was really struggling in a way that you can't explain. It's just a weird, you know, slump that he's in. Unfortunately, there's other guys on this team that are in a similar slump that the Diamondbacks really can't option to Reno. So that is something that they did with Jake based on the availability right now to do so, right? It's still early in the season. Jake can get right.
Starting point is 00:51:11 he can still come back to this team and contribute. And again, I like to hear that Jake's fired up about it. I don't want a player at a major league level to accept being sent down to the minors. I want to make it motivate them. I want to make them angry. And I want them to prove, you know, to Tori and to the, you know, the franchise that this is absolutely, you know, was a mistake. And I'm going to be back and I'm going to be better than ever. It's not really a mistake if for the moment.
Starting point is 00:51:41 most part, you know, if he can go down, especially to Reno, where it's kind of easy to get right and get himself back on track. But unfortunately, he is not not doing the thing right now. So I agree with Tori in the aspect that, you know, this team really does have its best outfield when Jake's a part of it. Right now, Alec Thomas, even though he's not performing much better at the plate, has been having much better approaches, like Tori said there. It talked about controlling lower half and you know again there's there's just certain things they look for you know when guys are struggling there's just certain things they look for uh that we don't see i got a chance to talk to randy johnson today which was a thrill for me by the way if you haven't had a chance to do so uh they
Starting point is 00:52:26 just opened a new exhibit in center field at the dbacks hall of fame and history uh area that they have over there and it features some of randy johnson's um framed uh photographs and uh man he is incredible uh he is incredible jim briger says you think we can call up Randy Johnson the pitch in in place of AJ Puck. I don't think we can do that, but Randy Johnson did say that he's talked to some of the young guys. He said that he's given them some advice. He's praised them for the work that they've put in. And he also went on to say that he feels like this starting rotation is possibly, probably the best that the Diamondbacks has ever had. So that's a very encouraging
Starting point is 00:53:04 words from a legend there. But speaking of AJ Puck, we did receive an non-update update today, I believe. how you would reference it. We don't have anything from Tori on that. We have more from Tori on J-Mart, which we'll get here to in a second. But unfortunately, no updates on AJ Puck. Tori Lavello did in fact say that he did not know the results of the MRI. But what he did know was that the team was going to get a second
Starting point is 00:53:32 and possibly third opinion. Now, I don't want to speculate too much on this because it's a bad thing, right? And I don't want to speak out of turn without knowing that too much information about it myself. Tori, in fact, in the past, has said that the medical team tends not to tell him everything until they feel like he needs to know because Tori can be dangerous with that information at a time. So in this case, second and third opinion typically means that the first recommendation is
Starting point is 00:54:01 Tommy John surgery. I doubt that they're looking for a second and third recommendation if the initial results of the MRI is possible. positive. Maybe that's the case. Maybe you're looking for other treatment options or maybe you're trying to see if there's any other way to avoid a season-ending surgery like Tommy John surgery. But this would be the second for AJ Puck in his career. And even though there are guys like Daniel Hudson that have made the case for coming back from two Tommy John surgeries, it's not always the case for a reliever. At least somebody that was as elite as A.J. Puck was for this team
Starting point is 00:54:33 last year. So Stephen Banana says, I need Pucktober. We all need Pucktober. I just don't know if we're going to get it. And again, unfortunate news from Tori. We definitely wanted to see something more encouraging from this. But yeah, you're right. I was sitting next to Jack Summers when he said that and I also tweeted out the same thing. Second and third opinions
Starting point is 00:54:52 are not good because usually, again, you're not getting those for good things. You're getting those for trying to make sure that if you're making a decision on a season ending surgery, that multiple experts agree on that being the way that you want to handle it. Meanwhile, and I guess
Starting point is 00:55:08 the kind of good news is that J-Mart, it sounds like he just needs one more day, but we should see J-Mart pitching out of the bullpen, again, potentially by the finale of this series against the Tampa Bay Rays. I think we do have video from Tori here on what he had to say about J-Mart. We're doing okay. We probably need one more day.
Starting point is 00:55:27 You know, we check in on him just to see how he's feeling. And, you know, he's close to 100%. We're just going to take our time with that. And, you know, behind what's, going on with AJ we just want to make sure and take our time of them so you know I told you guys today you'd most likely be ready I feel the same way about tomorrow so we're going to keep our fingers cross he comes out and he says it's go time and he's ready to go uh Lawrence said there in the chat so you're looking at Jmart as the closer I believe is what he said a little bit up there Kevin the
Starting point is 00:55:59 other direction so that said you were looking at Jmart as a closer yeah that's most likely the case with only Jalen Beeks right now being the only left-hander in the bullpen I I just can't see the Diamondbacks going to any kind of committee situation. They're going to need Jalen Beeks to be available throughout the rest of the appearance, throughout the rest of the outing. So you don't really have that, you know, that dual threat of a lefty and a righty going in the, you know, in the bottom of in the ninth inning, right? So I think Trey Jameson still has a chance of finding his way there.
Starting point is 00:56:32 He was my pick early in the season as kind of a dark horse candidate to not only make the bullpen, but possibly end up in that closer roll. And it's only because Dre Jameson literally has fire in his blood. He has fire on his wrist. Any what? Fire in his blood. Nice on his wrist. Fire in his blood.
Starting point is 00:56:48 Ice on his neck. I got close to that chain today. That chain is impressive. My man has all the style in the world. I can't say that enough. But that's all we got here for you guys for today. We'll be back tomorrow. Like I said, 2 p.m. show.
Starting point is 00:57:04 We're going to talk a little bit more about the series. We're also going to hopefully have some more fun updates. We're going to do something fun. It's a daytime show. So make sure to join us for that. And then we will be back with postgame shows on Thursday and Friday. But like I said, tomorrow, huge announcement, huge announcement that hopefully makes the rest of you guys as happy as it has made me.
Starting point is 00:57:23 Can't wait for that. We got some super chats before we get out of here. Stephen Banana says, I'll come do it for free. I had to do it myself. What was that in regards to? The cacti. Oh, the cacti. Lighting it up?
Starting point is 00:57:34 Coractamundo. we'll see we'll see i don't i feel like i can't give in at this point kevin i feel like i i have to i have to stay strong on this and not light the cacti but light and the cacti sounds like an electric thing that would happen every time like yeah someone said it would be a fire phton x shirt kind of like how the sacramento kings in the NBA had light the beam yeah light the cacti yeah i kind of love it i'm not all right because he clearly says maybe i'm on board with that prove that fought isn't single. He's my man. It's because I've talked to a significant other, BCSC.
Starting point is 00:58:11 Yeah, I was about to say, I was about to say, talk to his whole family. We have some bad news. Yeah, we have some bad news for you. The proof is very out there. The proof is everywhere. That's all we got, though. Like I said, looking forward to you guys joining us tomorrow. Knights 23 says Tawa and the rookie of the year candidate. Sorry, I won't. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to laugh that hard at it. But yeah, no, great day.
Starting point is 00:58:35 Brandon Chip says, I'm going to guess Randy Johnson, P.HNX event. That's a good one. That's a good guess. That might be it. Maybe not. I don't know. Maybe this shirt is a tease for that. Maybe this shirt has nothing to do with it.
Starting point is 00:58:49 Maybe I just wore this shirt so I could go up to Randy Johnson and show it to him and then have him like it and then tell him that the fine folks at Roosevelt's willing to make him one that's got an extra four inches added on to the end of it so that, you know, it fits him. He's a very tall man. But definitely great to see him. Definitely great to see all of you guys here in the chat. And that's all we got.
Starting point is 00:59:08 Like I said, I'm looking forward to being back here tomorrow. Hope you guys join us for that. In the meantime, make sure to follow us on Twitter. I'm at cap underscore caveman with a K. Guy Kev is at Kev-O posts. Our show is at PH&X underscore D-Backs. But as always, all roads lead to at PHNX underscore Sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. We got to see, let's see, Stephen Bananas says, Derek needs to wear a banana,
Starting point is 00:59:31 a Hawaiian shirt. Maybe. I would do it just for you, Stephen. I definitely would. And it might be a banana bananas one, but you know, if I am wearing it, it's for you. In the meantime, hope you guys had a wonderful evening. Hope you enjoy this win. Diamondbacks win big five to one. And they take, again, that one game edge in the, that, that damn expansion draft series. So we will be back tomorrow until then. Hope you guys have a wonderful evening. Behave yourselves and remember kids. Baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when all of your pitching shoves.
