PHNX Arizona Diamondbacks Podcast - POSTGAME: Pfaadt DOMINATES Pirates But Sewald BLOWS Save But D-backs SURVIVE 12-Inning THRILLER

Episode Date: July 29, 2026

The Arizona Diamondbacks finally got the dominant outing they needed from Brandon Pfaadt, but what should have been a stress-free victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates turned into an unforgettable marat...hon. Pfaadt fired seven shutout innings and appeared on his way to a career-high sixth consecutive win before Ryan Thompson and Paul Sewald combined to blow the lead, sending the game into extra innings and robbing Big Game Brandon of a well-earned victory. The D-backs ultimately outlasted Pittsburgh in 12 innings, capping off a wild night that featured clutch hitting, relentless small ball, and eight runs from an offense that refused to quit. We break down Pfaadt's ace-caliber performance, the bullpen collapse, and how Arizona found a way to survive one of its craziest wins of the season. Plus, we check in on Alek Thomas after a rogue mascot tried to take him out over the weekend, and discuss whether the Diamondbacks should be kicking the tires on a Jake McCarthy trade ahead of the deadline.     0:00 - Light those Cacti! 2:15 - That rollercoaster ride 3:40 - Was this a potential turning point? 10:30 - NO blame game but the Bullpen STUNK 12:00 - Multi-hit nights for the Dbacks 13:40 - The announcers nearly jinxed it 20:00 - Brandon Pfaadt 28:00 - The Bullpen 44:00 - By the Numbers and More  JOIN THE SUPPORTERS CLUB ➡️ https://tinyurl.com/yc6km2r4   An ALLCITY Network Production   SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: https://bit.ly/phnx_youtube   ALL THINGS PHNX: http://linktr.ee/phnxsports   MERCH https://store.allcitynetwork.com/collections/phnx-locker   ALLCITY Network, Inc. aka PHNX and PHNX Sports is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the City of Phoenix   PHNX Events: Get your tickets to PHNX events and takeovers here: https://gophnx.com/events/   ALLCITY — including us here at PHNX — is teaming up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for an exciting three-year partnership. Starting point is 00:00:00 Brandon fought dominated the pirates tonight, and he deserved better. But the bullpen blew it. Boys became men, and the Arizona Diamondbacks hung on to beat the pirates in what might be the biggest win of the season. Turn on those cactus lights. We are going live right now. And welcome in to another post-game edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast live from Studio K. presented by our friends at Circle K, it is your mayor of PHNX,
Starting point is 00:00:48 occasionally known as Derek Montia, thrilled to be talking about a Diamondbacks victory and not a Diamondbacks loss with you here on this show. The Diamondbacks finally, eventually beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 8 to 7 in 12 innings, and we have a lot to talk about. And I'm not alone tonight. I'm joined by a man who hoppled in here
Starting point is 00:01:12 will hovel out, but he'll still be here creating content in the morning. It is the one the only Kevin Thomas, aka Large Intimate, on the ones and twos tonight. And I am thrilled to have you guys here. Of course, this show is brought to you by our friends over at Bet365, where winning is everything. Download the app today and use that code of PHNX 365. We are also brought to you by GameTime. Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use code PHNX for $20 off your your first purchase terms do apply.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Well, after this game was well in hand, and the Diamondbacks were up six to nothing after seven innings, going into the eighth, we were taken on a roller coaster ride, one that completely ruined my night, considering I was supposed to go see a concert after we wrap this show, not to pull the curtain back too much there. But instead, what we got to do is sit around for four hours and watch these two teams, trade runs,
Starting point is 00:02:11 in extra innings until the diamondbacks eventually get the win in the 12th, thanks to their offense and won Gerardo Carrillo, who was excellent tonight for the diamondbacks in extra innings and help them secure this win. They do improve to 56 and 52. So before I start getting really negative and yelling about a lot of bad stuff, Kevin, if you wouldn't mind, can we send little Perdomo up Mount 500? All right, let's everybody calm down. Everybody's screaming at each other in the chat. Some guy already hates me, which is fine.
Starting point is 00:02:54 I'm still glad you're here, even if you hate me and my whole schick that I got going on here. But what a win tonight. And I'm just going to start off by saying this about this game. This is truly a turning point or could have been a turning point. I don't know really how to frame it. At the very least, the win feels like this doesn't have. absolutely sink the Diamondback's season. Forget the wild card implications.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Forget everything else. Losing last night, that was fine. That was a low-scoring game, and the Diamondbacks unfortunately lost that one in extra innings as well, but that was, you know, how some of those low-scoring games go. This one, this was different.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Brandon fought and the Diamondbacks dominated the pirates, whether you want to say that he dominated them or not. It's a moot point because the man pitched seven innings without giving up a run, and there is no person that knows baseball in this world that would not say a pitcher dominated the opposing team by pitching seven innings scoreless. Not to mention that the offense played the kind of baseball that we're typically expecting to see out of this team. Not necessarily the flashiest offense, not necessarily a team that's going to put up a lot of home runs, but a team that's going to get a lot of hits, put a lot of runners in scoring position, and convert those runners, it seemed like they were able to do early,
Starting point is 00:04:17 even though they left a lot of ducks on the pond, but late in the game, there's definitely a lot of runners that didn't score. And the Diamondbacks definitely did what they've been doing all year long, which is not converting those runners. The Diamondbacks end the game tonight, going three for 27 with runners in scoring position.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Not great, not great. But at least those runs happened when they needed them to, and this one was one of those. games where early on the offense looked like it was doing enough, even when it wasn't getting those big hits, like I said. Their offense kind of woke up today early on. They were able to score six runs early in this game, and they scored runs in each of their first four innings with eight hits and five runs in those four innings. It started with Perdomo getting the offense going with a triple. He would score on a Moreno ground out. The Diamondbacks were up one-nothing.
Starting point is 00:05:11 The debacks do have eight first-inning triples, which are the most in MLB. and 46 first inning extra base hits, which is the fourth most in the majors. But again, it was more of the same throughout the game for the Diamondbacks offense. In the second inning, Max Kepler would lead off and he would walk. Nolan Aronado would single and put runners on the corners. And then Tim Toward ground out, bringing Kepler home to make it two nothing. James McCanns singled to put runners on first and second with two outs. And then Corbyn Carroll single to score Tawa.
Starting point is 00:05:42 that put the Diamondbacks up 3-0. And that was the kind of the rhythm of the game for the DEVX. In the third inning, Gabriel Moreno did extend his streak of starts reaching safely to 44 games, tying the franchise record with Corby-Carrill setback in 2024. So Gabby continues to do the thing for this team, and he continues to get on base, and he's been amazing. But with one out there in the third overall, Kepler doubled Nolan Aronado and RBA single, scoring Gabby, and that would give the Diamondbacks a 4-0 lead.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Max Kepler's double in that inning. That would be his 1,000th career hit. So congratulations to Kepler on reaching that milestone as well. And again, this is it. There was very few extra base hits for this team. There was very, there was no home runs. It was just singles, scoring on ground outs. In the fourth, McCann gets a lead off single,
Starting point is 00:06:36 Walt Schmidt ground, bunk grounds into a force out, advancing, or getting McCann out, but Walschman stays on base. He advances on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt there by pirate starter, Bubba Chandler, who did not have a good game today. And then with two outs, Prudomo reached on a fielding error by Lowe. That scored Walshman and that pushed the lead to five to nothing. In the sixth inning, they would load the bases and get one more on a Moreno ground out to make it six to nothing.
Starting point is 00:07:03 Five to nothing and then six to nothing. Excuse me. They didn't do it with the long ball. They did it with a few extra base hits, speed, timely hits, and productive out. but then that offense stopped. It came to an abrupt halt. Once they knocked Bubba Chandler out of the game, the Diamondbacks would not score another run
Starting point is 00:07:19 after the sixth inning until this game went into extras, which that continues to be a problem for this offense as well. However, I'm not going to fault them, considering they were up six to nothing. Suddenly the bullpen just fell apart after Brandon fought exited the game and the Diamondbacks were reeling. It wasn't just the pitching either.
Starting point is 00:07:41 defensively they were bad there late they made some mistakes that didn't help their pitchers out that extended this game and kept the pirates kept giving the pirates hope late in this one but the diamondbacks would do enough and again when i say enough they were able to score one run in the 10th inning which the pirates were able to score in the bottom of the inning and one run in the 12th which would be the winning run there in the 10th inning with one out ildemarro vargas reached on a fielder's choice and that would cause Tyler Locklear to score Jorge Barrosa. And there was a situation there with Tyler Locklear moving over to third where he was originally called out. The play was reviewed by the Diamondbacks and the call was overturned. That ended up being very, very important for this
Starting point is 00:08:29 team. Locklear was safe at third base and that, and then he eventually scored on the Ildemar Vargas fielder's choice, excuse me, Jorge Barrosa went to second. There was a throwing error there by Jared Triolo. That allowed the Diamondbacks to push their lead at the time in extra innings to seven to six. And then eventually in the 12th inning, they got a big knock there from one James McCann. Jorge Brosa was out on the sacrifice bunt moving Tyler Locklear over to third. That put Tyler Locklear into scoring position for James McCann there to knock him in with an RBI single. That RBI single would win the game for the Diamondbacks. And again, it felt like there were a lot of occasions for this team to win this game before that point.
Starting point is 00:09:15 There was a lot of chances for them to put it away. And I'm going to put this so much on the bullpen. This is so the bullpen's fault. I'm not even going to act like it's not. But you can't help, but take a look at the Diamondbacks going three for 27 with runners in scoring position and saying the offense also had the chance to win it several times, several times. and even though they were able to put up those six runs early, that's great.
Starting point is 00:09:42 A lot of those innings that they scored in were just one. In fact, they only scored two runs in the second. Every other inning, the first, the third, the fourth, and the sixth were all one runs. Later in the game, the 10th and 12th also just one run. So again, this has a lot to do with the offense not being able to produce in those moments. I feel like, again, if we were going to play the blame game, which we are not tonight, guys, we are not playing the ball. blame game tonight. But if we did, I would put it on Tori LeVolo, because I do feel like at times
Starting point is 00:10:14 this wasn't taken seriously enough and they didn't keep their foot on the gas. I think that with the way things are going, it's very ironic that the Diamondbacks get on this night, the offense putting up five plus runs, the starting pitching going out there and giving you seven scoreless. And of course, of course, the bullpen has to blow it because this team can never have everything. working all at the same time. They can never have all of their cylinders moving in the same direction to keep this machine afloat correctly. They do get the win, but they have a lot to think about tonight.
Starting point is 00:10:51 I really believe they do. And I do think that this win is huge. It is season changing for this team. I really do feel like, you know, they fought back here in extra innings and did an excellent job at not letting this game slip away. And, you know, this one, like many of you, I was already getting ready to write off as a loss once we hit extra innings, right? But the offense, they kept plugging along.
Starting point is 00:11:17 They kept trying to keep this team in this game, and they won the battle of attrition there in extra innings. I don't believe I've seen a game go this deep in the extra innings since the ghost runner rule was implemented. It was crazy to see this game go into the 12th, but I know that's wrong. I just feel like we don't see this anymore. We don't see games go this deep.
Starting point is 00:11:40 Offensively, there were a lot of guys that had multi-hit nights tonight. Nolan Arnato had himself a great night, and he was three for five with an RBI. You also had James McCann, who is the hero offensively tonight, going four for six with an RBI and a run scored. Walshmet was two for four with a run scored. You had Corby Carroll going two for five with a walk and an RBI. Perdomo, one for seven tonight with no walks. You feel like you just can't have perdomo. hitting second in the lineup if he is going to be going one for seven.
Starting point is 00:12:12 And it feels like we're getting that a lot lately. And it feels like once again, the Diamondbacks have adjusted the lineup recently. We now have Carroll hitting lead off. We have Cotel Marte hitting fourth, which we know Marte does not like to hit fourth. And that shows he went one for six tonight with no walks. But again, the Diamondbacks are trying to shake up this lineup
Starting point is 00:12:33 to get some more out of this offense. It truly feels like, you know, perhaps swapping Cotel and Pardomo, moving Pardomo down, moving Arnato up, maybe, you know, keeping Kepler hitting fifth there, that might be a little bit better of a configuration. But what do I know? I'm just a dopey guy that had plans to go see a concert after the game, and all I needed it to be was a reasonable goddamn game. Just a reasonable time game, right?
Starting point is 00:13:03 Kevin, just not 12 innings and 4 plus hours. easy to make jokes from your couch, Derek. Don't even start with me. And are we going to go in on them? Are we going to go in on the announced team tonight? I love Chris Gargiola. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. But at one point, he said in the middle of a baseball game on television, on broadcast television,
Starting point is 00:13:26 he said that Brandon fought was going to get his sixth win in a row. In the seventh inning of this baseball game, he said that with words out of his mouth on TV. I'm still flabbergasted by that. Let's see. Mark in the chat says Perdomo left 12 runners on base. Oh, that's absolutely brutal. I don't love that at all. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:13:54 Damon's on vacation. Oh, so we can say bad things about Perdomo? Well, I'm just, well, yes, but I was also saying like it didn't really happen. Damon didn't see it. It didn't really happen. Yeah, that's true. That's true. Russell says, why did Chris Jinks?
Starting point is 00:14:06 I have no idea. I feel like once he said those words, he very much wanted to pull them back into his mouth and not have said them on TV. But unfortunately, he did. But yeah, this one, this one was just such a weird game overall. I don't even understand what happened with most of, with most of the things that occurred late in this one. But still, offensively, I will say this team, you know, still continues to find a way to put up runs. And tonight was definitely one of those kind of nights where they literally found a way to put up runs. Arnado and McCann both had themselves a great night with multiple hits, especially with McCann coming up big there and extra
Starting point is 00:14:48 innings. Meanwhile, like I said, Gabby Moreno, 44 straight starts reaching base safely, tying the longest streak in club history with Corbyn Carroll. So this is just one of those wins where, again, like I said earlier, it obviously would have been a bigger loss. than it is a win. This is a game you survived. This is a game you held on to, and this is a game that you are lucky to be walking away with the win. But I also feel like, once again,
Starting point is 00:15:21 this is another one-run victory, which the Diamondbacks still continue to lead the league in one-run games played. And I feel like that just makes you different. I think it makes you a little bit more, you know, forged by fire and prepared for these important games that are going to be coming up beyond even the trade deadline. However, this has huge, a huge impact on the trade deadline. As far as things are concerned right now, I don't think that a loss necessarily could have made the
Starting point is 00:16:00 front office suddenly changed their mind as to which the direction they want to go. at this point. However, watching your team lose after they were up going into the eighth inning six to nothing might have been that kind of devastating loss. Might have been. I don't want to say it is. I don't want to be that hyperbolic. I hope that they are far more level-headed than we are on this program. I mean, that's why we bring Kevin in here. We need Kevin to come in here and be the voice of reason at times. He's not, but he tries to be. He tries to be. me. I mean, he can't control me. You know that. Only David can control me around here. But he's in Alaska, so I am unhinged. Kevin's taking pictures of me, showing the world what I look like in my
Starting point is 00:16:51 my worst state, which is me watching Paul Seawald blow a baseball game. I probably just walked the office saying, oh my God, 162 times in a row. That's what that's what watching a game with me is like. But again, the offense did enough. James McCann probably deserves honorable mention for King's Snake, but he doesn't get the title tonight. We're going to take a quick break. And on the other side of this break, we're going to give it to the man that truly deserves it.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Don't you go anywhere? You're watching the PHA next time in Beck Show. Starting point is 00:19:48 Again, create an account and redeem code PHNX for $20 off. Download the GameTime app today. Kevo, what time is it? Game time? It's actually 821. I missed the opening act and the main performer on the show. But yeah, it's game time. It's game time.
Starting point is 00:20:03 All right. Well, speaking of main performers, Brandon Fott was the star of tonight's game, at least until he left the game, and then Ryan Thompson and Paul Seawald became, I guess, the main villains of tonight's game. But Fought shoved once again, and he can't say enough about what he's done since returning from AAA Reno.
Starting point is 00:20:23 He gave up very, I mean, he gave up some hard contact tonight, but he gave up very little contact overall. He gave out one out double to Brandon Lowe in the first inning, but that would be it for the pirates for that inning. And then he was, would have a one, two, three second. He would give a one out, give up a one out single to Jacob Gonzalez in the third inning, but that would also be it for the pirates in the inning. He got himself into a little bit of a jam, the most that he would be in the entire game in the fourth when he gave
Starting point is 00:20:53 up a one out double to Esmerald and Baldez and then a two out single to Nick Gonzalez to put runners on the corners. But once again, that would be it for the pirates. And then in the fifth, he gave up a two out single to Jake Magnum. Great, great name. Fake name. That Jake Magnum, is the name that I give when I check in hotels when I don't want people to know it's actually me. Then he also walked Lowe and that would be it for the pirates because he would not give up any further hits.
Starting point is 00:21:17 He would have a one, two, three, six inning and then he gave up a one out single to Marcelo Zuna in the seventh, but no further hits. That would be it for the pirates once again. He was outstanding tonight. And I can't say enough about how well Brandon fought has been pitching,
Starting point is 00:21:33 at least as far as the results are concerned. We have his pitch chart here. from tonight's game, and you can see exactly where everything was landing. He actually went with his change-up, but he threw a really nice mix of pitches tonight. 25% of his outing was change-ups, 23% was sinker, 22% foreseam, 14% cutter, 10% sweeper, and then 7% curveball. He got nine whiffs on the night, two were on the change-up, one on the sinker. His four-seam, he got two whiffs on, that maxed out at 95.4 miles.
Starting point is 00:22:07 per hour and average 93. And then he would get three whiffs with the cutter and then one with the sweeper on the night. But overall, not a lot of strikeouts, just a lot of contact. And again, Brandon fought getting a lot of outs. Some of those outs were very loud outs, but still regardless, outs, outs. And that's where I feel like Brandon fought has really been having success, even though, again, he doesn't go out there and have the sexiest line, even though seven innings and zero runs is very sexy.
Starting point is 00:22:44 He has found a way once again to kind of lean into this pitching philosophy that the Diamondbacks entire staff seems to be embracing, which is pitching to contact and getting more of those outs rather than trying to be fine, trying to fill up the zone, which again you can see he did there with his pitches tonight. He definitely filled up the zone. And, yeah, as Nick said there in the chat, the home plate made a lot of bad calls. He sure did tonight. And the diving backs weren't challenging enough, but they did challenge and used them in those big moments and tried to turn some things around.
Starting point is 00:23:20 James McCann, very good at challenging Gabby Moreno might be, in fact, very bad at it. But McCann was good behind the plate tonight with Brandon Fott. And these two manage to get fought for strikeout. So let's fire up the Circle K strikeout meter. And remember, the Circle K strikeout meter, it likes to be fed. In fact, the Circle K strikeout meter, it doesn't want to be fed. It wants to hunt, in fact. But four strikeouts will at least be a snack for the strikeout meter tonight.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Fought, though, again, you can't say enough about the results. Seven innings pitched, six hits, zero earned runs, one walk, and the four strike. So again, Fought, appreciate him, appreciate what he did for this team, and appreciate what he has continued to do for this team. It should have been a career high sixth win in a row for Fought tonight. He should have been the first Diamondback with six straight starts with a win since Zach Granke won seven starts in a row back on May 17th through June 18th, 2016, over 10 years ago. It's the last time we had a starting pitcher. win six straight starts. But it didn't happen because Brandon Fott doesn't get the win tonight.
Starting point is 00:24:35 He gets the no decision after the bullpen, blows the game. He did toss his fifth career start of seven shutout innings. And for all the reasons that we have listed here, Brandon Fott is your King Snake tonight. Again, seven innings pitch, zero earn runs. We thought he was going to get, just like the broadcast, we thought he was going to get the six game streak. It's on there.
Starting point is 00:24:57 We can't do anything about it now, but we all thought. It's a six-game streak in theory. Yeah, in theory. In spirit. In spirit, he should have gotten the win for sure. And I was going to have a whole discussion topic with Kevin Thomas, who is a huge fan and supporter of Brandon Fott and a believer in Fought. And I was going to discuss if this win, if this performance tonight was enough for us
Starting point is 00:25:24 to essentially feel like Fott is, is that guy, is enough to be like comfortable that he is going to help you win these games down the stretch, especially considering that he has given you six straight starts since returning of giving this team a chance to win. I don't know how you can't consider him that now. I know at first it's a small sample size. I know at first you kind of wait to see if he can be consistent and Fought has been nothing but consistent since returning to the lineup. 100% Derek and as you know I never lost faith and my boy Brandon Fogg. He really didn't.
Starting point is 00:25:59 I might have been the only guy. This man has sang his praises from the rooftops. I will say at one point when he got sent down did it become a bit of maybe a bit that I just didn't want to let go? Sure. Sure. Has he ended up paying me back? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:12 For your loyalty? Yeah. For your dedication? Yeah. For your belief in him. Yeah. And so I actually, you know, Brendan Fott.
Starting point is 00:26:19 That's my boy forever now. But as you and I talked about during the game, It does feel like, you know, managers often talk about it, and it sounds kind of like coach-speaky of like, well, it's not about getting sent down. It's about how you respond? How are you going to respond to this? It's just some adversity I'm throwing your way.
Starting point is 00:26:39 But it's clear that Brendan Fott took, you know, being sent down as like a real, like, all right, I can't get back here again. I cannot be back in this place again in my career. I have to get better in certain things. I have to execute better. And he's done that. Yeah. Is it just a hot streak?
Starting point is 00:26:54 I don't know. Is it who Brandon Fott is now? Is he the goat? Maybe. I'm going to go. I'm going to give you this much. Brandon Fott's last game before going to AAA Reno was a relief appearance against the Dodgers where he gave up three hits and two earned runs in one inning of work.
Starting point is 00:27:09 That spelled the end of his time at a major league level. He returned. That was June 3rd. He returned on June 30th. That was his first game back. He pitched five in a third innings pitch, gave up one earned run. his next start, five innings pitch, zero earn runs. His following start, five and a third innings pitch, two earn runs,
Starting point is 00:27:29 followed by another start of five and a third innings pitch with two earn runs. And then his last start before tonight, six innings pitched seven hits, two earned runs. And tonight, seven innings pitched zero earned runs. Fott has recorded a quality start now in his last two consecutive starts, and again should give you all the reason in the world to believe in him once again. Meanwhile, let's get to this bullpen. Gross. Ryan Thompson tried to ruin it himself.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Ryan Thompson comes in with a six-run lead. He walks Brian Reynolds with one out. He gives up a double to Ryan O'Hern with two outs, and that was the Pirates' first run, D-backs up six to one. He then gave up three more hits in a row, and two more runs to make the game six to three. Tori Lavallo desperately wanted to get out of the inning with Thompson getting out of the inning,
Starting point is 00:28:26 which he just had to get one more out, which he couldn't do. So he had to be removed from the game. Brandon Garcia comes in, he gets one huge strikeout to end the inning. But again, used unnecessarily and a good chance that Tori doesn't want to go to Garcia as an up-down for the ninth inning.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Plus it's a save situation, so of course he goes to Paul Seawald. And Paul Seawald has one of the worst outings that Paul Seawald's ever had. And that's saying something. That is saying something about the bad innings and the bad outings that we've seen, the blown saves in our time with Paul Seawald on this team. Paul Seawald comes into the game. He immediately gives up a double to Jake Magnum.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Again, great name. Can't hate him for it. Definitely would have been a name that I used as my fake name when I was like 10 years old. Then it gives up a double. home run to Brandon Lowe, which everybody in the universe knew was coming and we could just see it from a mile away. And it wasn't, I mean, I'm not, there's, there's not going to be any defense of Paul Seawald. It was an 82.7 mile per hour sweeper that was basically in the middle of the zone. Kind of high. You're talking about the nine square quadrant. It's square two there, maybe a little lower than that.
Starting point is 00:29:47 So that just shows how close it was. That one was smashed 103.7 miles per hour off the bat for a 415 foot home run. That made it 6 to 5 at the time. But he wasn't done. Paul Seawald would immediately give up a solo home run to Brian Reynolds, the very next batter, and that would tie the game up at 6. And that one was a 92.4 mile per hour forcing fastball. That was kind of in and not a terrible pitch.
Starting point is 00:30:16 but still Paul Seawall doesn't appear to be effective. And the pirates were just unstoppable in those two innings. It felt like there was nothing the Diamondbacks could do to slow it down or stop it. He did get Esmerel, Esmerell and Valdez to line out to Jorge Aborosa. And that would be the end of Paul Seawalt's night. Paul Seawald would get the Diamondbacks in this game. One out, he would give up three hits, three earned runs. and two home runs.
Starting point is 00:30:48 I know that the Diamondbacks wanted to have another option by this point at closer. I know that had to have been the plan this entire season, and I know sometimes fate changes that plan. And still, Paul Seawald, this is just his third blown save of the season, even with what a roller coaster ride it has been every time he comes into a game.
Starting point is 00:31:13 And some of those outings has been great. Some of those outings have been very effective. But you can't help but feel like lately Paul Seawald is starting to unravel and is becoming a liability for this team late in games. And that's what he was tonight for this team. They replaced him with Juan Murillo, who immediately gave up a double to Ryan O'Hern, and it felt like this game was just about to be over. In fact, I wish there was video of me and the tantrum I was throwing in that moment
Starting point is 00:31:44 once Murillo gave up that hit. I pretty much just wanted it. I was just like, just end it all. End it all. And when I said that, I wasn't just meaning the game. I was meaning the season, the show, my job as a sports reporter, all of it. Because that's what I was feeling. And instead, he gets Nick Gonzalez to strike out,
Starting point is 00:32:03 and then he gets Andy Rodriguez to pop out to James McCann to end the ninth inning and send us into free baseball. And again, the Diamondbacks were looking for someone. to come in and close the door. They brought Kevin Ginkle in. And honestly, I don't even think King Ginkle pitched that poorly. He got a sackbunt
Starting point is 00:32:27 that moved the runner over. Then there was a ridiculous fielder's choice situation there by Tyler Locklear, who should have just recorded the out. Ball came to him. You kind of feel like if there was one of our other first baseman, like if Eldemarbar Gis was maybe there at first,
Starting point is 00:32:46 he might have been able to make that play, taking up the ball and throwing it home to get the runner at home. Instead, he doesn't. And the runner also reaches first base. No out is recorded. Game is tied. And once again, it feels like everything is bad and everything is terrible for this team.
Starting point is 00:33:03 But they did get a couple of outs there to get out of the 10th. Then in the 11th inning, we got to talk about it, man. Diamondbacks rookie Gerardo Cardio or Herardo. I'm not, I'm not sure. I want to say, more like, Hero Ardo. Me, here Ardo is what it is. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:22 Our hero Ardo. Yeah, because this man came in and gave the Diamondbacks. Two very strong innings pitched. And that's difficult to do in any situation, let alone in extra innings where each time he was coming in, there was a runner at second in scoring position, ready to go. This man recorded three strikeouts. He walked one intentionally.
Starting point is 00:33:46 and he gave the Diamondbacks two of the best goddamn innings of relief pitching I've ever seen any pitcher give in this kind of high stakes situation, let alone a rookie that just made his major league debut the other day. Cannot say enough about Carrillo. Cannot say enough about what he did. I don't know what his future right now is with this team, but the Diamondbacks might have found themselves another real one in this kid, because what an outing he had. And I think Chris, again, even though he cursed this team earlier, he very poetically put it when Cadillo was pitching that who knew his biggest game in his career would come in Pittsburgh on a Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:34:37 But man, did he pitch his ass off today? and he locked things down so that the Diamondbacks could eventually get that Ghostrunner scored in the 12th inning, and then he holds it down in the bottom of the 12th to get his first Major League win and to help the Diamondbacks hold on to this one by a score of 8 to 7. I honestly can't believe it at this point that the Diamondbacks bullpen was the thing that blew this game. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering how often in this team's history, we've had that happen to us, but I just still cannot believe
Starting point is 00:35:13 this season where we have talked tirelessly about what a asset the bullpen has been, what a surprise the bullpen has been, how this bullpen in fact has been so good that even with the delays and the setbacks to AJ Puck and Corbyn Burns and everybody else,
Starting point is 00:35:34 other injuries that have happened, you don't feel the need to really add to this bullpen. However, you can't have Paul Seawald continue to close games down the stretch. You just can't feel great about his ability to do so. I'm not saying, I'm not on the Seawald hate train where I feel like other people have been the entire time. I know that this man has been very helpful, very vital to this team's success, even this season. And he definitely was in 2023. But I just feel like we're approaching another point in CWald.
Starting point is 00:36:09 Walt's career where he has one bad outing after the next. And at this point, they really got to figure something out, at least considering how Tori has not been shy about turning, for instance, to a Brandon Garcia to come in and clean up an outing after Ginkl has let things go sideways. And he did that tonight with having Morillo come in and finish things up for Seawald there in the ninth inning. I'm looking at a tweet from Goldschman happened on Twitter right now, Derek. this is disgusting what I'm about to read to you right now.
Starting point is 00:36:44 Oh, God. Can you guess Paul Seawalt's ERA over the last seven games? Seven outings, I guess I should say. It's got to be like 10. Pretty damn close. 9.53 ERA. Now, can you guess his ERA over the last 15? Over the last 15 outings?
Starting point is 00:37:05 Probably 7. 8.78. Now can you guess it over the last 30? Like five. You're really good. 5.53. I mean, it is, as Goldsmith happens, says fully cooked. It's over.
Starting point is 00:37:19 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, not to say that it was ever great. It was just that Seawald, you felt again, and I've said this before, giving him credit, that he uses his intelligence against batters there in those innings, and that's what makes him successful. But I feel like that only gets you so far.
Starting point is 00:37:39 That can only get you so far. can only get you so far when your stuff isn't good enough. And to be fair, again, to Paul Seawald, there are other effective pitchers that throw a 92 mile per hour fastball. Eduardo Rodriguez's fastball isn't too much crazier than that. Merrill Kelly's fastball isn't crazy, right? So it's not a matter necessarily of the velocity of the fastball or this or that. It's just that his pitches seem to be extremely hitable, extremely predictable, and he doesn't seem to be fooling anybody anymore with that baseball knowledge and intelligence that he has. So I don't know because, again, he has not been effective in non-save situations.
Starting point is 00:38:23 He's been even worse in those. So I don't really know what Roaldi would have if, you know, again, he's not the closer for this team. And that still seems to be the most effective role for Paul C.Wald. However, I just don't feel, I don't feel comfortable, don't feel comfortable at all with them doing that for this team. Especially when you have some other guys that have truly great stuff and they've proven to you that they can come into high leverage situations like they did tonight, including Juan Morillo, including Kevin Ginkle, and including our new favorite guy in the world, Herardo Carrillo. I'm going with Horado. That feels right. We call Geraldo,
Starting point is 00:39:07 Haraldo. This guy's got to be Herago. But anyway, let's see. In different news says he's a two-pitch guy with a low 90s fastball with Hank's pitches, even when he has success,
Starting point is 00:39:17 only a matter of time before he went on a horrendous run. I mean, that seems to be the case. You're not wrong. You're not wrong about that. It's just the way he laid it out. As you know, Derek, I've been watching a lot of, like,
Starting point is 00:39:28 law and order and crime TV. It just sounded like they set it up, like, you know, he peed the bed, he abused animals. It was only a matter of time. It was only a matter of time until things went sideways for him. But anyway, all right,
Starting point is 00:39:41 we're going to take a quick break. I'm done talking about this bullpen and this disgusting display of pitching, right? Like, to ruin Brandon Fotz outing like that, I think that's probably the most upsetting thing. I think it goes back to like the way Paul Seawald blew the save and ruin Cole Drake's major league debut, which should have been a win for young Cole Drake
Starting point is 00:40:06 and instead was a no decision. So big moments getting ruined by this bullpen and they almost blew this game, which again would have been a backbreaker for this team. And I cannot stress that enough. I think that the season would have been over if they lost this game. Is that level-headed enough for you?
Starting point is 00:40:31 Is that good enough? for you, Kevin, because I truly do feel like watching a team that you are currently engaged in a back and forth with for the final wildcard spot, albeit undecided considering how many games there still are to play in this season. It's just hard to imagine them rebounding from that. It's hard to imagine the front office wanting to suddenly invest and go hard in the paint during the trade deadline. So anyway, like I said, we're going to take a quick break. On the other side of this break, we're going to take a look at some of the gross numbers from tonight's game. So don't you go anywhere?
Starting point is 00:41:09 You're watching the PH next time in the Beck Show. Well, if you are ever involved in an accident or a serious injury, you have to do your research. And that's because you want to make sure that you hire an attorney that's focused on your best outcome and not how much money the firm makes. That's the husband and wife law team. That is Mark and Alexis Breyer.
Starting point is 00:41:34 Their team brings hundreds of years of combined trial experience, along with multiple certified specialists in personal injury and wrongful death. And in Arizona, the state bar is certified less than 1% of all lawyers of specialists in injury and wrongful death litigation, making them experts in the field. And again, someone you can trust if you are ever involved in an accident or serious injury. They do actually go to trial. They are trial lawyers. If a case needs to go to trial, they are ready. They know what needs to be done in a courtroom to prevail in front of a jury. they also cannot guarantee the outcome of any case,
Starting point is 00:42:05 but they can make promises to you as their client, including that you can cancel your fee agreement with them at any time for any reason that you may speak with one of their lawyers as often as you choose about anything you want to discuss, including a lawsuit against Paul Seawald, and you have the right to trust that as your lawyers, they will tell you both the strengths and weaknesses of your claim so that you can make informed decisions.
Starting point is 00:42:27 So if you've had a serious injury, call the husband and wife law team first at 602-783 8841 or visit their website at the link in our show notes and tell them PHNX sent you but don't tell them that I suggested that you that you sued Paul C-Wall. The link is in our show notes. Let's take a look, Kevin, at the disgusting numbers from tonight's game that were much more attractive at one point and now are as gross as they possibly could be.
Starting point is 00:44:48 Diamondbacks win this one by a score of 8 to 7 in case you missed it. They had five extra base hits to the Pittsburgh Pirates. seven they were three for 27 with runners in scoring position gross that is right that it couldn't be grosser couldn't it three for 27 the diamond bags hit in this game one 11 with runners in scoring position meanwhile the pirates were five for 19 uh hard hit percentage 381 point point 1% of the balls the diamond backs got a bat on were hard hit pirates 32.2.3.3.3.3.5.5 got a bat on were hard hit pirates 32.5% of their balls were hard hit. Both teams had a fairly close expected batting average, 245 for the Diamondbacks,
Starting point is 00:45:35 235 for the Pirates. And meanwhile, the Diamondbacks did dominate in challenges. They were three for four in this game. Meanwhile, the Pirates were 0 for three. What a weird game and a true turning point for this team. Like I said, I don't know if the win. does mean as much as the loss would have meant. But avoiding the loss, I think, is tremendously important.
Starting point is 00:46:05 I also don't think as much as I want to think it, as much as my soul screams it, I don't think this loss really would have impacted what Mike Hazen does here at the trade deadline. I still think, and Steve Gilbert kind of confirmed this when he was on Steve Zinsmeister's pregame show, there's a lot of steves there's a lot of Alexes it's hard to keep straight but he basically confirmed something that i also have brought up on the show which was that it feels likely
Starting point is 00:46:34 that the diamondbacks make a move but it's not taric scubal much to damon's dismay it's not yorda on alvarez once again much to damon's dismay it's not even going to be like a christian walker or a louisa rise it's not going to be the kind of names i think that we want and hope for names we think would be a good fit because when it comes down to it those are simply going to cost too much for the Diamondbacks to trade, to get in return, and a lot of those names are going to also be pursued by many other teams because of how close this wildcard races, both in the AAL and the NL. And speaking of that, let's take a look at the standings.
Starting point is 00:47:13 Kevin, if you wouldn't mind, let's take a look here at where the Diamondbacks currently stand by beating the Pirates tonight. The good thing here is that they keep hold. for the time being of the wildcard spot. I think you have to refresh that one, Kevin, because it's still without before the win. And sometimes MLB.com, there we go. Now it's swap.
Starting point is 00:47:35 Now it looks better. Let's take a look at the wildcard standings here. The Phillies, they still are playing some bad baseball. They're still not, you know, I don't think that they're a lock for that second position. Meanwhile, the Cubs keep winning baseball games. they keep looking good. And I think that they are not only going to challenge for their division,
Starting point is 00:47:59 they're going to keep putting pressure on the brewers, but they're also going to continue to be right there, either in the spot for their division or holding on to that top spot. But I don't know, man, right now with the Diamondbacks being just one game back from the Phillies after they lost two in a row, feels like, again, this is a good position to be in, and it feels like it's hard to not want to continue to build around a team that is this close to not only holding on to the third spot, but possibly grabbing hold of the second wildcard spot overall.
Starting point is 00:48:38 But again, we got a lot of teams above 500 here in this division. It's nothing new. That's what the NL is. And even the Marlins, they've started to turn things around. Cardinals, they've lost a few games. all of these teams are going to remain close. And with so many teams less than five, like the Cincinnati Reds and everybody back from the Cincinnati Reds,
Starting point is 00:49:01 they're out of it. They're sellers at this point. Those might be good teams to start picking players off of. But with the Cardinals being two and a half games back, the Marlins, two games back, the Padres winning three in a row now and they're two games back, all of those teams, it's going to be hard for those front offices not to want to add.
Starting point is 00:49:20 as well as the nationals who have one of the best offenses in baseball, as do the Pittsburgh Pirates. And we've seen it firsthand, especially tonight. We saw that damn offense come roaring back in a matter of no time and tie this game up at six. So again, the Diamondbacks need to do something, especially to help their offense. And, you know, starting pitching,
Starting point is 00:49:41 you feel a little bit more confident about this rotation. You feel a little bit more confident about Brandon Fott being a strong piece of this rotation. Merrill Kelly also pitched his ass off. yesterday and deserves all the credit. So those three guys are solid, but you can't feel very good about going forward with two rookies that have entirely too much uncertainty surrounding them and feel like you're going to win enough games to get that playoff spot. We need a Michael Seroca back, and honestly, we need another starting pitcher. And that pitcher might be Zach Allen,
Starting point is 00:50:14 much to the chagrin of many people. Candice is right. Can we get some likes on this video. we got like 130 watching. Love to have you guys hit that like button. Make sure you subscribe if you have not done so already. And make sure you come around for the losses too. That's all I'm saying. But glad to have you guys here. Love you all.
Starting point is 00:50:34 I'll say this later, but your time is your most valuable commodity. Thank you for sharing some of it with us. We're going to take a quick break. And on the other side of this break, I'm going to try to, I don't know if this is going to add any levity to the situation, but I'm going to try to have a level.
Starting point is 00:50:50 laugh about the fact that a mascot tried to run over Alec Thomas and AAA and uh Jake McCarthy might be an attractive trade target for the Diamondback so let's get crazy in the last segment don't you go anywhere you're watching the PH and next Diamondback show well as you know I love shady rays and I love them for not just their wonderful frames and their polarized lenses that make my face look beautiful and block my my pretty eyes from the sun but I I love them because of their lost and broken replacement plan, which I almost had to use today because I was out of store and I left my sunglasses sitting on the counter and I turned and walked away.
Starting point is 00:51:34 Luckily, the very kind cashier called out to me and said, sir, your glasses, but they don't always do that. And I leave them places quite often. So thanks to the Shady Race lost and broken replacement plan, I don't have to worry about being without sunglasses for too long because should I lose them, I just have to contact the good folks of Shady Ray's. And they'll get me out a new pair with no guilt trip, just replacements.
Starting point is 00:51:58 And actually, I love Shady Ray. So again, make sure to shop their wonderful collection. And make sure to head over and use our code of PHNX50. Go to Shadyrays.com and use code PHNX50 for 50% off two or more pairs of polarized sunglasses. Shady Ray's is eyewear that has your back. Starting point is 00:53:44 I don't know what that's about, but that's probably good advice. I believe Sean, though. I trust Sean. I haven't produced Southwest bias in like four days and ESPO's getting detained. What's going on? Not great. Well, we have another fun event, by the way.
Starting point is 00:53:58 This one is happening on August 25th. It is our D-BAC's takeover of Chase Field presented by Circle K. Join me, join Damon, join your fellow PHNX diehards for a day of fun, baseball. Found out recently that the very next day, my friend and singer of our Mailbag Monday song,
Starting point is 00:54:18 Megaran, is going to be throwing out the first pitch on August 26th. one day after our takeover, sadly. I might have to make some phone calls and get that changed. I don't know. But if you do come to this takeover, your ticket includes a PHNX D-Backs merch of your choice, choice of a hat or a shirt.

So again, get your tickets at go-PHNX.com slash events. Kevin, I will still always watch over my precious boys. As you know, we do a little thing on this show called spying on our exes. And that could be what this segment is called. I guess it's more concerned about our exes because Alec Thomas almost got taken out permanently
Starting point is 00:55:15 by the Sacramento Rivercats mascot on Saturday. I mean, look at this. first of all, look at this maniac on this uncontrollable scooter. He literally levels Alec Thomas. Can we get another? Thank you. I like, we need another shot about this mascot. His name is Dinger.
Starting point is 00:55:36 And. Oh my God. So, okay, I don't blame Alec Thomas here. I know maybe you might want to blame Alec Thomas. You might want to say maybe he should have been looking when he runs out of the dugout. You don't get, you don't expect to get run over by a cat. riding a motor scooter there in front of the dugout, that's not his fault. That's not his fault. That man was, he was locked in, he was going out to play baseball. He wasn't worried about
Starting point is 00:56:06 mascots attempting to run him over and murder him. More importantly, the Sacramento Rivercats Rivercat is named Dinger. How original. Get yourself an original name. There's only so many mascots in baseball. We all know Dinger's the adorable purple dinosaur from Colorado. What are you doing? And more importantly, arrest this man. Arrest this man for vehicular assault and attempted manslaughter. I want that cat in jail. Thank you. I needed to see it one more time. It's not great game awareness by Thomas. It's not... You know what my favorite part of this video is, Derek? What's that? We're going to run it back one more time. Please do. And I will pause. We're going to do a little telestration here.
Starting point is 00:57:02 So you got the, you know, acceleration here and then boom, collision, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. This is perfect. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Working full body to body contact. Yeah, body to body. Alex has a leg up. He's not even fully grounded for this.
Starting point is 00:57:15 Yeah. He's getting rocked. Yeah. Gets rocked. Oh, whoa, oh, he lands on his back. Sits up. Stays there. sits there.
Starting point is 00:57:26 The two of them do. Knees to his chest. The two of them do. Well, yeah, but I think this is different for Alec Thomas. I think the mascots probably like, is my head still on? Am I if I've been decapitated for them children? How do you get up from sitting down in a mascot costume, right? Alex Thomas, that's a look of a guy that's like, man, this is really where I'm at right now.
Starting point is 00:57:42 Mark is asking if we can see it in slow-mo. Can we, do we have slow-mo capability or no? We don't think we have slow-mo change. No, okay, all right. We only have so many telestrator abilities. But yeah, for me, it's the contact. It's the full-body contact here. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:56 The roll onto the back sits up. And this is just the thousand yard stare that was all 1,000 yard stairs right there. I mean, I feel bad for Alec Thomas, man. That's like when you're having a bad day there. That's seriously insult to injury, right? And you spill your dinner on the ground and you're just, you just stare at it.
Starting point is 00:58:15 Yeah. You just go, are you, that's the kind of day I'm having right? Are you serious? Yeah. I was, I was hitting the go-ahead home run in the NLCS a cup of coffee ago. Literally. And now I'm getting run over by dinner.
Starting point is 00:58:28 My dinger, the goddamn Sacramento Rivercats mascot on a motor scooter. What has my life become? Sorry, Alec. I want it better for you. Speaking of better, Jake McCarthy is living a much better life with the Colorado Rockies. He's currently leading the Rockies and batting average this season with a 307 batting average. He also has 10 home runs and the second most RBI on the Rockies behind Hunter Goodman. and he's drawing trade interest from several teams
Starting point is 00:59:00 at the trade deadline according to reports. And I just want to take a moment to say, let's pick up the phone. Let's give him a call, right? Hey, Jake. Look, man, I'm sorry. Sometimes you miss your exit on the freeway, right? And you just want to say, I'm not going to go.
Starting point is 00:59:22 I'm just not going to go. And then you just have to be an adult and admit you made a mistake, circle back around, get off on the next exit, come back south, and get back off on the exit you were supposed to get on. Right? Sometimes we get rid of players, we shouldn't, but sometimes those players become available at the trade deadline.
Starting point is 00:59:44 And Mark wants to know if he's a courte merchant. He might be a course merchant. He might be. However, I still want him back. Even his numbers on the road, I bet, are better than the Diamondbacks. many of the players on the Diamondbacks offensively. But no, I just can't believe Jake McCarthy is becoming a coveted trade chip
Starting point is 01:00:06 here for the Rockies at the deadline. Can't really figure that out too much, but life's funny, isn't it? I'm going to take a look here. Let's see, his away stats. At Coorsfield, he's hitting 321, 354, 571 for a 925. Meanwhile on the road, still good numbers, 272, 325, 424 slug, or a 749 OPS. A little bit more average, obviously, but still not a stark difference where his road numbers are terrible, and you're like, oh, well, that's why.
Starting point is 01:00:40 That's why. Seven of his home runs are at Coorsfield, though, and the other three are on the road. But hey, all I'm saying is pick up the phone, give Colorado a call. That's all I'm saying. That's all I'm saying. But we love you guys. We thank you guys so much for your time. I'm going to go try to see if I could catch what, like the finale of the concert.
Starting point is 01:00:59 Maybe I get to see the encore of the concert and I was going to go watch. I hope you guys have a much better night than I. I'm still going to have a good night. If you were watching some real, Derek, by the way, if you were watching real rock stars, you would be right on time. Yeah, you're probably right about that. He must be watching some squares. You're probably right about that.
Starting point is 01:01:15 I had no idea what's going on over there. But again, I'm going to try to make it over there. I hope you guys have a wonderful night. You can follow us on social. media.
