Beat L.A.
The other edition of the P.HNX. Live right here in Studio A for PHNXHQ. My name is Derek Montia,
occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. And I got my guy, Kevin Thomas, occasionally known as large intimate on the ones in Tuesdays tonight.
And we are all in very good moods because the Arizona,
Diamondbacks did our favorite thing.
And that is beat the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight by a score of five to three.
Kevin, I think that deserves some bells.
I think that deserves maybe a Glockenspiel or two.
I think it's kind of a big, it's kind of a big deal.
The Glock and spills will come after the music.
Yeah, it's kind of a big deal like my shirt says.
But Groundhog Mama says, I hate that picture of Fought.
Then do me a favor.
Find us any better picture of Brandon Fott because he looks like that in every single.
image on getting. But of course, welcome in to the PHNX Diamondback show. This show's brought to you
by our friends at Bet365 and Game Time. Of course, go use that code of PHNX 365. When you sign up over at
Bet365, get yourself some bonus bets. Of course, you can use that code of PHNX over in game time.
Save $20 on your first purchase over there. Welcome in. Love this chat. Love you guys. So
great to see you guys here. And also, we better see all of those Dodgers fans that were in here last
night talking all that best. You guys better be in here, you cowards, because your team got beat
tonight by a score of five to three. And yes, let me tell you, this was a big win for the Arizona
Diamondbacks. They get their 20th win of the season. They improved the 20 and 18. This was their first
game of the year, and it's the first win of the year against the National League West opponent.
So here we are on May 8th, playing the Dodgers for the first time. And man, what a great feeling
that they were able to win.
Pretty convincing fashion.
Obviously, some problems late with the bullpen.
Things didn't exactly go Juan Marillo's way.
But this was a pretty thorough victory for the Diamondbacks,
especially leading into those late innings.
We know this Dodgers team could put up seven runs at the drop of a hat.
They've done so all year.
So it didn't feel like even a five to one lead was safe.
And of course, that five to one lead was courtesy of one,
Gabriel Moreno.
This guy had himself a night
and it is a wonderful, wonderful
thing to see. We definitely,
we definitely love to see Gabby
getting back on track. It was his
first three-hit game of the year
and Gabby Moreno,
he was hitting the ball very hard tonight.
The single that he hit in the second inning was his second
hardest hit ball of the year
until a little bit later
when he hit a grand slam. His hardest
ball of the year actually was
a ground out, funny enough. But
Yes, Gabby Moreno in his next at bat for this team in the fourth inning with the bases loaded, hit a grand slam for his first home run of the season.
It was also, like I said, Gabby's first three-hit game of the season.
And it just feels great to see this team having this success.
Here is what Gabby Moreno had to say about the grand slam through our friend Alex, his translator.
All right, Gabby, first home run of the season, a grand slam.
just tell us the emotion and feel behind that one.
The emotion of the first one ron,
that's been saying a grand slam.
It's a good, it's been working on it every single day.
It's something that I've been working on
every day, trying to get a lot of bathear it.
And thank you.
It was a good.
It's been working on it every single day,
and today was a good day.
Alex always summarizes those answers,
doesn't he?
My Spanish-speaking friends,
but again, great, great to see
see Gabby Moreno having this big night. We've said it time and time again, obviously,
if the Diamondbacks can get contributions from guys right now, not named Perdomo, not named
Corbyn Carroll, or even to his credit, Josh Naylor, you feel like this team has an excellent
chance of winning any baseball game, especially on a night where Brandon fought pitched as well as he
did. Big game Brandon once again showed out for this team, especially against the Dodgers,
and he had probably one of his biggest outings of the year. He went six and a third's
innings pitched and did not allow a single run.
He gave up four hits.
He gave up three walks and he struck out six.
But we'll get to the pitching here shortly, of course, tonight.
A lot of this was about the offense and what the offense was able to give the Arizona
Diamondbacks.
Here is what Tori Lovela had to say in regards to this game and the Diamondbacks finally
plan what he considered to be a pretty clean game.
Yeah, we talk about playing a pretty complete baseball game.
That's what it looks like for me.
Of course, there are some things we can tighten up.
Every game is not played perfectly, but in the space and the areas that we like to live in with pitching and defense, we were fantastic.
One defensive play after another, Brandon Fawkes pounds his own, has a great game plan, goes, you know, six plus scoreless innings.
It was just a fantastic outing, and the day was started, started with him getting everything under control.
We built an inning against a very stubborn, tough pitcher who's been dealing lately.
You know, once you build it, you got to have the right guys come up and gabby with an unbelievable approach with a line drive home run over the right center field wall.
That tells you that your swing is tight.
You know, you don't hit balls out there by accident.
You don't hit it that well.
Opposite field against traffic like that.
So it was really nice to see him get off on the pitch that he was looking for and do some damage on it.
And they can tell with another solo home run.
So offensively, I thought we impacted the baseball and built in.
He's just a really nice win.
So those guys are in there enjoying it right now.
but we got we got you know another game tomorrow we got a lot more to play we got to use any game
as a reference point today is the one I want to remember what this feels like because it didn't
come easy we went out there and executed a very high level obviously you know again we've talked
about this we've said that the diamondbacks need to play fairly flawless baseball in order to win
especially against the team like the Dodgers and they did that tonight this was of course
the diamondbacks this was the first series opening
win versus the Dodgers since July 30th of 2021.
And we're going to get into some of these pitching numbers too, but we got some crazy
stuff from our guy, Alex, over at Arizona Sports 98.7.
Oh, wait, or Gambo.
I don't know. Gambo got mad because I credited Alex for the stat.
And Gambo said it was, it was on him.
So he called me, he called me names.
But I love Gambo.
I love those guys over there.
And of course, it was a great night to be a Diamondbacks fan, especially watching this
team, get another, have another two home run night.
So far this season, the Diamondbacks are.
10 and 4 in games of season when they hit two run, two home runs or more.
That grand slam from Gabby Moreno.
That is our Sanderson Ford deep drive of the game, obviously very important.
And based on the final score, Gabby's home run, his grand slam was enough offense
to win this game for the Diamondbacks.
It was a 337 foot dinger with an exit velo of 105 miles per hour.
And in the next inning, that was followed up by Cotel Marte, who quite frankly,
Marte was spectacular on defense tonight.
He made some incredible plays out there, even when his bat really wasn't working.
So far, since returning from injury, Cattel's been hitting just kind of not really having a lot of success at the play.
A lot of his hits have a negative launch angle, meaning he's hitting them down into the ground.
It's just not really getting a lot on his swing, but tonight he did.
And he definitely made up for his lack of offense early on with some incredible plays.
Made a fantastic double play.
One of the best plays of the year so far to end the eighth inning and get the same.
makes out of a jam there that Juan Murillo put them in.
And he hit his first home run of the season there in the fifth inning.
And you guys are right.
I heard you guys talking about it.
But the stance, the staring down the home run, like it's funny because there was a lot of
predictions tonight, a lot of, a lot of predictions.
Before we even went to the game, I had one, our one and only Damon dog telling me that
Brandon fought was going to shove tonight.
He absolutely did that.
And then prior to this home run, we had two, I guess,
two future seers here next to me.
Nick Piccoro down a little way when,
when Cotel made an incredible grab there on a defensive play,
Nick predicted that he was going to hit a rocket in his next at bat.
And then while he was in the middle of his at bat,
Jack Summers, our guy from Snake's territory with one Jesse Friedman,
just kind of looked at me and he made like a like a whistling stow.
He's like,
and he kind of did this thing like this.
And then I proceeded to watch Cotel Martay hit a home run
in the exact same trajectory that Jack's little finger went showing me.
It was amazing.
Probably the stupidest thing I've done in a while.
Jack had Game Day up.
And when Jack did that and then the home run went and Cattell's trotting around the bases,
I found myself, Kevin, for a brief moment,
looking over at Jack's computer to see if Game Day somehow told him the home run was going to happen before it did.
Because I have no idea how he did that.
But the man is incredible and so is Cotel Marte.
The man I was talking about, of course, is Jack Summers.
But we got a, we got a little bit of a conflict.
I know Candice isn't going to be happy with this for sure.
But we do have to give our Kingsnake to somebody tonight.
And based on Brandon Fott telling me to do so,
we are giving the Kingsnake to one Gabby Moreno.
Gabby Moreno, his first three hit night of the season,
or first three hit game of the season, a grand slam for RBI,
just really look dialed in.
And again, we've talked about those guys in the five, six, seven hole for the Diamondbacks not really producing, not getting it done.
And we saw that today.
We saw Gabby be the main driver here of this offense.
And we saw him have an incredible night.
We also saw some key hits out of Gino, who was one for three.
We also saw Josh Naylor go one for four.
Nobody else really had a spectacular night besides Pardomo, who was two for three again.
And this team just got the job done against the Dodgers.
Offensively probably still not, you know, probably not the best game offensively, but again, this is like we're going to talk about here with the bullpen.
Knights aren't perfect. You don't have your whole offense all click. You don't go out there and score 15 runs against a pitcher like Yoshinova Yamamoto.
But the Diamondbacks had a game plan and that game plan tonight was to kind of sit a little bit on the location and on the fastball from Yamamoto.
And that definitely seemed to work out pretty well for this team. We have Gabby.
here talking a little bit about his performance and if having two days off kind of impacted
tonight's performance.
I'd like to miss time with injuries, but do you think that the two days off kind of helped
you reset and kind of get back into the grooves and maybe get those three hits today?
You know, that not you like to lose time for the lesions, but you
I'll take those days of
I'd like to be able to be
me cuddlero
but only
I'd say the job
today of today.
It was good for me.
I mean, just thankfully
it was able to work out well today.
And hear a little bit more
from Tori Lavello on that big
double play that I was talking about from
Cotell Marte.
Obviously that eighth inning
started to get away from them a bit
and that double play was
phenomenal, it was reviewed and upheld.
The reaction in the stadium was great. Here's what
Tori had to say about it.
You know, Marillo's
struggling a little bit there. He's
a trusted reliever and
he ends up making a great lunging play.
And, you know, little things inside of this
game that are just so pleasing to a coach
who's watching a player
work on something.
That particular play, I've seen
Ketel work on it. You know, he's
talked to me specifically about jumping and
throwing the ball overhand and they're getting away from him.
he drops to a low three-quarter slot.
This is a discussion we had in spring training.
This is a discussion that we had in the first week of the season before he got hurt,
and then he went out there and did it.
So those are great moments between a player and a coach,
and then he goes out there and gets us out of a jam.
So the game was fantastic, but it had an extra scent to it,
an extra spice to it when I watched it happen.
So it was a great play.
And we did that all day.
It could tell him made a great hands play.
Like that line drive, that's not easy.
Guys were moving at a very fast pace today, and that's Dback baseball.
Groundhog Mama in the chat said that someone said Yamamoto's ERA double tonight.
What's funny is, you're actually not wrong.
Yamamoto has only given up four earned runs so far this season,
and he gave up four earned runs in the game.
So there you go.
There is definitely a doubling of his ERA,
and it balloons up to 1.80 on the season.
He still has the top ERA in Major League Baseball with Kodi Senka,
who he just faced second.
in Major League Baseball.
But this was a thorough win.
And again, this Diamondbacks team,
they allowed Yamamoto to only go five innings.
They get six hits against them.
To be honest, you got to tip your cap to the Dodgers being able to throw in a single reliever
in Jack Dreyer, who kept the game scoreless after Yamamoto left.
And honestly, set the Dodgers up for pretty good success in their bullpen going forward
into tomorrow's game.
But Diamondbacks definitely need you guys out there because it was loud.
Chase Field. There were a lot of Dodgers fans in attendance. And honestly, I don't want to get off on a
tangent that I got the conversation or argument or whatever you want to call it with Damon.
Damon argues and fights about everything and I love him for it. But he was particularly mad about
this being essentially Dodger fan appreciation weekend at Chase Field. You have Japanese Heritage
Night followed by Mexican Heritage Weekend. And it's all on a weekend where the Diamondbacks
are facing a team that is very popular with both of those fan bases. And obviously
you know, there's, there's that kind of look.
I will say one thing that I found more, more infuriating was playing of the song
California Love while the Dodgers were taking batting practice.
I found that to be a bit egregious myself and maybe catering a little bit too much to the
opposing team.
However, I will say that if you want a silver lining this, we sent a whole lot of Dodgers fans
home sad and hopefully we can continue to do it this weekend and just ruin it.
ruin all of it for him come on out spend all of your money and then go home sad uh but yes uh who says
we have a japanese heritage night yes that was tonight in fact that's exactly was the theme of tonight's
game so um and yes mexican heritage weekend is absolutely for debacks fans too that was kind of the
point i'm making i will say one thing i think about this is that you know that the chase field is
going to be filled with with people during a dodgers series so i personally wouldn't do bobblehead nights
or any kind of theme nights over the course of a weekend.
But, I mean, that was, yeah, I mean, that's, it's also up to the teams to do so and,
and whatever, right?
I mean, I just think that, you know, planning things out in a way, maybe marketing-wise
might make more sense to have it on a weekend where you have a team that's maybe less,
less compelling, going to bring in less people.
However, from that perspective, maybe fans don't come out regardless of who the opponent is
that they're playing.
And again, I also,
I'm one of those people that feel like if opposing fans want to come to Chase Field and spend their money,
that's not necessarily a bad thing for a stadium that isn't necessarily that fool all the time, right?
But yeah, it doesn't feel great to go to any game at Chase Field and see the other team,
you know, the other team's fan base in such a high population in comparison.
But I give the Diamondbacks fans a lot of credit.
They showed out tonight.
The cheers were loud.
They definitely got theirs in.
and yeah, they quieted the Diamondbacks a few times, right?
So, and then Transonic says the Diamondbacks Dodgers game on September 23rd is German Heritage Night.
What does it mean?
What does it mean?
I don't know.
We're just doing like, I don't know.
I don't know.
I mean, you know, it's, it's, again, it's the fact that that's a very, that's a very popular international team, no matter what market you talk about.
They've done a great job at kind of going out there and making fans everywhere.
but I don't know.
I think that this is one of those cases where sometimes a team needs to have a little bit tougher
an attitude towards especially a division rival.
And yeah, I wouldn't completely disagree with Damon's rants on Twitter.
But I'll also say, much like a lot of things, I'll take your money.
I'll happily take your money.
So, but anyway, moving on, we have more to talk about.
And that more to talk about is Brandon Fott's incredible night on the mound for
the Diamondbacks. We will do that on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere. You're
watching the PH&X Diamondback show. Well, Heal River Resorts and Casinos is one of my favorite
places to go and it should be for you as well. Of course, it's one of the best places to take a
staycation here in town or just a night out to go enjoy their over 4,500 slots and table games

talking about is their bet MGM sports book right there at Heelah River Resorts and Casinos Wild Ores

Diamondbacks, these very good diamond bags. So I'll be there this weekend for that exact thing.
That's right. It's the ultimate place to watch and win. Catch me at Wild Horse Pass.
And again, even if your team loses, you can get over it really quickly by going out to the casino floor

All right.
Well, what do we got here, guys?
we uh we get we got stuff in the chat stephen uh says erot has not been very good we got super chats
what we got in the super chats let's go with those kevin b says no greater sports joy than defeating
the frauders you're not wrong you're not wrong it always feels good maybe that does make us a little
bit of a little brother syndrome right like when you're the big brother and you beat the little brother
you don't really think about it that's what should happen but when you're the little brother and you
beat the big brother i don't know we've done it in the playoffs we'll continue to do it and hopefully
we continue to do it this weekend.
A piece of Yoshi wants to know,
where is Damon to laugh at James Outman?
Oh, he was here doing that.
I'm sure. Kevin can attest to it, right?
Yeah, no, he was. He actually was.
Yeah, he was there.
Thank you, Derek Foster, fellow Derek, who spells it correctly,
he said, get yourself a bar as hot dog.
Thank you. I will do such a thing.
Maybe we could get Stephen to docks us again and send us some food.
B says, oh, fought our glorious ace, where do we begin?
I don't know. I don't know.
we could talk about it quite a bit because Fott was outstanding.
Big game, Brandon, showed up tonight against the Dodgers and out-duled Yamamoto,
the best pitcher in, at least statistically, in the National League,
and all of baseball.
He had a great mix of pitches tonight, and he used pretty much everything.
And when I say that, I literally mean that.
Do we have the pitch chart image?
We'll see here that Fott used 34% fastballs, 24% sweepers, 15% change-up, 14% sinker,
12% curbel.
And look at where these pitches landed.
He kept his four seam fastball up,
kept that sinker low in the zone,
kept the sweeper kind of there.
I mean, plenty of pitches in the zone,
but man, he did a great job tonight
with this pitch mix.
This has been an incredible,
this was specifically an incredible game plan
against his Dodgers team.
At times he, you know,
was careful with these big hitters,
but I think the one thing you saw from Brandon fought tonight
was him not being scared to attack.
And that's,
What the six, that's, that's what the success was tonight. And that's what everybody attributed Brandon's success to tonight. He got, uh, 10 whiffs tonight. And he kind of spread it around. There was two and one pretty much on everything. He had three on the sweeper. That was the most he had on one particular pitch. Uh, and he goes six and a third innings. He gives up four hits, zero earn runs. He walked three and struck out six. And I think that's worthy of firing up the old circle K strikeout tracker. Let's get those six strikeouts on the board. Kevin. Please. Thank you. That makes me feel, that makes me feel. That makes me.
you feel good. I know it's, I know it's six. We're going to light it up one of these days.
Don't worry. Gallin's going to make Kevin's life miserable one of these days
without having to figure out how to add more than 10 strikeouts to that.
But we have some more here from the clubhouse, including Gabby, here giving first his thoughts on Brandon Foughts Big Night.
Brandon said you would start tonight, not only for the home run, but the game that he called for him.
What was working for you guys together tonight?
Brandon, commento that you were the
star of today, not only for the Hong Ron,
but the way of that you manage
behind the plate.
Yeah, Brando did
a tremendous job
today.
The credit is
that he,
as he,
he was going to
turn around where I was
more than I was
to talk to.
Tremant's job from Brandon.
His location was great.
Everywhere I asked for the ball
the pitch was there,
so all credit to him.
Another
quick translation there.
But yeah, Gabby,
Definitely got it was was mutual respect and love between Gabby and Brandon fought today.
You know, Brandon credited Gabby for calling such a good game.
Gabby credited Brandon for his game plan.
Gabby said that he knew Brandon was locked in during the bullpen session before the game.
He could see that he was throwing some really good stuff.
And of course, it's a big reason why, you know, tonight the Diamondbacks were able to hold off the Dodgers.
We got some from we got some words here from Brandon fought.
First, here he is recapping his outing tonight and what was working well for him.
I think we had a lot of things working on both sides of the plate and we were able to use that,
whether that be fastball or any of the off-speed.
So I think clearly the game was Gabby, not only behind the plate, but with his grand slams,
set the tongue for us, and we were able to roll from there.
Another theme of tonight was asking all the players about like facing the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Rogers, right? Nobody really wanted to play it up too much. Nobody wanted to give us too much.
But Brandon kind of admitted to the fact that like, yeah, like there's a little bit, as our guy,
Jack Summer said, pep in their step when they play against the team like the Dodgers.
Here's what he had to say.
Yeah. I think the, I think we did that with the Phillies last time. We were a little too giddy up,
like you said. And I think we're able to calm things down and locate more today. And success was
derived from it.
And obviously, I know I brought up him mixing his pitches well versus like rival teams,
especially teams that see him a lot.
And obviously it's a good game plan.
But, you know, Brandon Fott has had outside of one outing, an incredibly good season.
And he's been the Diamondbacks most consistent starting pitcher this year.
In fact, when we talk about consistency, the Diamondbacks over the last three games just did
something that they haven't done since 2002.
to. And this is where I was talking about earlier. This is my Alex Weiner stat of the night,
but then also Gambo wants to get in on credit on this one. So credit to Alex and Gambo,
but the Diamondbacks have not had three consecutive starts by starters, by starting pitchers,
where they went six and a third innings or more together since 2022. This is the first time. And in fact,
I believe one of those starts was Ryan Nelson's Major League debut was one of those three starts
that had six in a third innings pitched or less.
So this stretch right here, you know,
this has been some of the Diamondbacks best starting pitching
that they've received all year.
And we've had flashes of it.
We've seen them put together stretches of quality starts,
but this has been the longest stretch that they've had
of pitchers going out there and giving them more than six innings
since 2022.
And it just goes to show that this is this starting rotation
that we had a lot of questions about early on.
is starting to figure things out.
They're starting to settle down.
They're starting to settle in.
And that's not really anything new for Fought
because like I said, Fott has been
their most consistent pitcher this year,
but it just really feels like the Diamondbacks
are finding something now.
And this starting rotation is starting to live up a little bit
to those expectations.
Here's what Brandon Fott had to say
about mixing up his pitches
when it comes to facing off against these rival teams.
I think you can look at it two ways.
You can look like they,
they know what you're going to throw
and obviously we can
reverse that and know what works
with them and when they come up to the
plate and they have a good lineup
and they know our sky report
on them so sometimes you kind of
got to mix it up and I think we did a
good job with that today.
Another thing he did well that I brought
up earlier besides mixing up his pitches
was how aggressive he was towards
Dodger hitters, right? Like
the Dodgers are very good
and I have a feeling that's
Sometimes the approach that opposing pitchers have towards them might fall into their game plan, right?
You have someone like Brandon Fott who goes out there and pitches a little fearless,
pitches aggressively in the zone, and you see him have the success that he had tonight.
And here's Brandon talking about that aggressive style of, I guess, pitch calling.
I think those are some of our better games when we're aggressive in zone.
We're able to get away with some stuff early on the game and go deeper into the game and trust our Dress.
And that's what we did today.
And I mean, we've talked about this a lot.
We've said that the Diamondbacks at times, like, there's a lot of intrepidation.
I don't want to use the word scared, but it's it's lack of commitment, if you will.
It's it's this lack of aggression.
It's a lack of believing in yourself, confidence, right?
You want to go out there with conviction and you want to believe that you can dominate the zone
and you can make batters have to start swinging at your secondary stuff and swinging out stuff outside of the zone.
but you can't do that until you establish your stuff in the zone, your command in the zone,
and that you are going to go after them and you're not going to run away from their bats, right?
So Brandon Fought's done that well in outings where Zach Gallen was confident and aggressive in his stuff.
You see him pitch well.
And Merrill Kelly, I mean, again, outside of one bad start for Merrill Kelly, this has been a season
where you've seen Kelly be consistent and again be aggressive towards the strike zone.
and that's what has led to these guys getting things back on track.
I don't know.
I mean, confidence is such a weird thing,
and baseball is such a weird game where that lack of confidence
can have such a huge impact on you,
no matter if you're a position player defensively,
whether you're a starter or a pitcher on the mound, even a reliever,
or again, if you're at the bat up at the dish.
So tonight, though, Diamondbacks got the job done.
And of course, part of it was that defense behind Brandon fought.
He credited that defense, and here's what he had to say about Cattel and some of those amazing plays that were made behind him.
The defense was great.
I think not an Alec and center tracked down some pretty hard hit balls, and Catell turned a nice old play there at the end.
And I think everybody came to play today.
And that's a great point.
Everybody did come to play today.
And again, in the outfield, Corby and Carroll had an amazing play down the right field line.
You had Alec tracking down a huge, making a huge,
there in center field. And again, Alec took a great route to that ball. He was taking great
routes all night defensively. And a lot of the hard hit balls to the outfield were not actually
even dangers. What do you got, Kev? I also wanted to bring up. I was extra impressed by that
Alec Thomas catch because if you remember last game, there was a similar hit ball out to center
at him, very similar to that one. And he did not read it correctly. Yeah. And so in the big moment,
it was nice to see him actually like, you know, make that correctly. You know what's funny about that
plays that was the one I was talking about yesterday it had an expected batting average of 960 that had a
96% chance of being a hit right so I don't know if I blame alec for not getting that this one might
been a little different maybe a little easier to catch for the record I'm not blaming aleck I'm more so just
saying like what tory talks about how making the little plays and how things can just bounce your
way when you put yourself the right position to do that yeah it was it was nice to see everybody
against the dodgers against the number one team in the division for sure be on their peas and
hues and just be on point tonight yeah and i mean again defensively they have not been they have not
been sound this year they've made a lot of mistakes defensively and i mean again there is uh that that that
was a spectacular play there were a couple of plays that again you you don't make those plays the
dodgers have guys on second and third that that inning changes on you really fast things go a
different way right so uh credits of fought for never really getting you know shook even when he had
guys, runners in scoring position, and they did limit the amount of opportunities the Dodgers
had there.
But of course, late, once again, things couldn't be easy.
The bullpen, Jalen Beaks had an impressive outing, I thought.
He had an impressive strikeout of Otani to end the seventh inning.
He went two thirds of an innings, inning pitch.
He had two strikeouts.
But then Juan Murillo made things interesting in the worst possible way there in the eighth
inning.
He allowed two earn runs.
And, of course, he also got.
into a position where I'm sure every Diamondbacks fan out there watching that game was thinking,
here we go.
Here, this is what's going to happen, right?
We've had fun.
We've enjoyed this game.
We've pretty much led through 70%, 80% of this game, literally 80%, because it was the eighth inning,
maybe a little bit higher percentage of that.
And then we get down to the end of the game and the Dodgers start scoring against his bullpen.
Dodgers have notoriously been good at comebacks this season and putting up runs late.
and I think everybody was seeing that, you know, go down that path.
There was a lot of questions about whether Tori was going to change gears there
with Juan kind of struggling.
And, of course, he did not make things easy for this team.
Here's what Tori had to say about leaving Marillo in there.
Yeah, I was going to go to Ginkle and then Ginkle to Miller.
Marilla's been throwing the ball good.
I felt like he deserved a chance to get out of that.
He was starting to wobble a little bit.
and we're getting after Ginkle and Shelby quite a bit.
So I'm trying to chop those guys up.
They've been on the same day pattern.
I wanted to throw one and not the other.
That was the overall goal.
But it came down to meet Trusted Marillo.
He's been throwing the ball really good for us.
And I felt like I got a little dicey there.
If Conforto hits a ball on the seats, it's a totally different outcome.
But I felt like we were going to make a pitch and we ended up doing that.
Yes, Tanner.
It is pronounced Morillo.
I don't know if you heard me right.
before I cut. I did say, yeah, yep, yep, you guys got me. And I can't even say, like, normally
that this is a hate crime because Spanish is my first language. So this one's on me. That one's on me.
This isn't a milk situation. But Diamondbacks, of course, do lock things down. Kevin Ginkle comes
out for the ninth inning. Electric entrance, electric performance. And maybe, just maybe,
Kevin Ginkle is the Diamondbacks answer to their closer situation.
It still feels like Shelby Miller is going to be that.
Don't ban Sean from the chat.
Get Sean out of here.
Sean's done.
Sean is out of here forever.
Don't just ban him for one day.
Ban him permanently from this chat.
But no, I mean, this was this team is something else.
And Kevin Ginkled again, it feels like he has electricity for that closer role.
he has the ability even when guys get on base that you feel fairly comfortable with him getting out of it and yeah it was electric tonight i mean you're going to give me a kevin ginkle scream in the ninth inning i'll love it i'll love it i'll take it so yes uh kevin ginkle again uh comes in shuts things down makes i mean he did give up the home run right so he did give up a otani home run there's a little stat padding uh by otani and major league baseball they're late but you just still got to feel
pretty good about Kevin Ginkle in that role. But what's new?
Joe Hayotani, you know, fixing the numbers. What's new? Yeah. I also, I hate the fact that like,
yeah, it, I mean, it just, it doesn't feel great. It does, like, the one thing I got out of
Shelby Miller in his first save of the year was nothing. I got nothing out of it. I got no emotion.
I didn't feel anything. I was just, the game just ended. And I was like, what was that? I don't know
what a ninth inning with no drama and no action really is.
Miller just came in and shut the game down.
That wasn't the case in his next opportunity at a save.
But I still think that from what Tori said after the game,
what we're going to see is him as a manager,
hopefully utilizing these guys a bit better.
And he said he's going to get Ginkl and Miller away from each other
so that he's going to have those guys available on different nights
and has some of his best relievers available with some of the other ones
two, not to take anything away from those guys, but some of them are like Juan Morillo are young.
You got, you know, Jose Castillo that I don't know how much longer he is going to be a part of this bullpen or maybe they work out.
Because he, even though he has been bad at times, he still has had some pretty decent outings as well.
But like just have a mix here where guys like Kevin Ginkle are available one night,
Shelby Miller available another night.
Ryan Thompson was a guy that he was going to possibly go to there.
But the Diamondbacks get out of that inning there with Cotell Martes.
huge double play and then the ninth inning comes around ginkle gives up that one home run but
overall not much outside of that and again it's o tony so uh you know that MLB just needed that to happen
they needed something from otani tonight but diamondbacks win again by a score of five to three and we're
going to break down the numbers from this game on the other side of this break so don't you go anywhere

Also, we have big news from our friends at Sanderson Ford.
Ford has announced the From America for America employee pricing.
I'm sure you've heard about it.
I know you know that it is the same price that they give their employees and it is a great time.
If you are in the market for a vehicle or even if you were just maybe thinking about it to stop by Sanderson Ford.
Of course, you pay the same price as the owner of the company with this deal.
And of course, every Ford dealership is offering this right now.
But what you're going to get out of Sanderson Ford is you are going to get no markups.
You're going to get no addendums.
You're not going to get any of that stuff.

which they have been providing Glendale with for 70 years.
And of course, they have the inventory that you're looking for.

Don't do that.

stop in and get a pair of tickets to an Arizona Diamondbacks game,
literally just for stopping by and say hi.
No test drive.
required, but hey, it's fun to test drive. So, why does well do it while you're there?
This deal does exclude the 2025 Expedition, Super Duty, Raptor family, Mustang, and Bronco specialty
vehicles, one pair of tickets per household with valid driver's license to the July 6th game
versus the Kansas City Royals. While supplies last, they have 200 tickets, so do not wait.
Go out there and get yourself some tickets. All right, well, this is going to be a little bit more
fun, Kevin. Let's take a look at the numbers from tonight's game, presented by our friends at
desert financial. Of course, the Diamondbacks
outscore the Dodgers 5 to 3. Both teams
had nine hits. Diamondbacks
left a lot of ducks on the pond
again or a lot of snakes in
the desert. I don't know. We need a snake
metaphor for that. Then ducks on the pond.
This isn't, we're not, we're not foul.
We're snakes. One for
seven with runners in scoring position. Dodgers
were two for five. Diamondbacks
had three extra base hits. Two of those
were home runs. One was
a double. Then the
Dodgers had their two extra base hits.
expected batting average for the Dodgers was 335 to the Diamondbacks 301.
So both teams were hitting the ball fairly well, fairly hard.
A lot of hard exit velos.
Poor Michael Conforto hit into, I think three of his outs were all hard hit balls.
Three of his outs were all 95 miles per hour or higher.
I believe one of them was like 110 miles per hour off the bat.
And you love to see it.
You love to see him hitting into an out when he hits the ball that hard.
But this is important.
because we have been talking now for weeks and weeks and weeks about our division being the N hell west.
And yeah, it is still an N hell west.
But what we do have is an update on the N hell west.
Kevin, what do we got?
Got the Dodgers at 25 and 13.
We got the Padres at 23 and 13.
We have the Giants at 24 and 14.
We now have the Arizona Diamondbacks with 20 wins at 20 and 18.
And yes, the Colorado Rockies are still alive and they still exist.
do they matter?
That's more of a philosophical question,
and I'm not here to wax philosophy.
But what I will say is this is an incredibly difficult division.
When you look across baseball,
I believe there are 12, maybe 13 teams currently with losing records this year.
Meanwhile, the NL West currently has four teams with 20 wins.
Don't know.
Don't know about that at all.
Don't know why this division continues to be tough.
Again, it proves that there is a big, it's a big reason why these games are very important right now for the Diamondbacks.
It's a matter of keeping the Dodgers close and not allowing this division to slip away.
There's a good chance that maybe the rest of the series doesn't go the Diamondbacks way,
but man, this was a great way to start it.
And of course, right now what they need to try to do is just keep things close, right?
it's it's it's it's going to come down to a lot of a lot of games being played later on in the season but right now with how good the rest of the division is you really just don't want to let things slip away and start to get to a point where because the diamondbacks have been guilty of this they you start to look at the scoreboard even though you're not supposed to look at the scoreboard and it starts to become demoralizing to the team that they're so behind in the division you know right now the Dodgers have a plus 51 run.
differential. The Padres have a plus
29 run differential. Giants have
a plus 39 run differential and the
Diamondbacks are at plus five. What are the
Rockies have? Minus 109.
Gross. Minus
109 run differential. That is the most
significant run differential as far
as on the low end in all of baseball
and by quite a margin too. I think
the Orioles have a minus 69.
Nice run differential.
And yeah, that's it. That's
the closest one. So the Rockies have
have the lead in dysfunctional run differential by 40 runs.
And that's definitely not good for them.
But hey, at least we get to play them a whole lot.
So there's that.
And it's not going to be easy here with the rest of the teams that the Diamondbacks have to face,
at least early in May.
Like I said, there's some reprieve there against the pirates.
And I think the Nationals later on in the month.
And of course, you can't underestimate those teams or else they'll do what the Nationals
did to the Diamondbacks the last time they play.
someone who's that.
Ryoma in the chat wants to know what the white socks run differential is.
This is a fun game.
It's minus 39.
Minus 39.
And once again, the Colorado Rockies is minus 109.
I probably shouldn't laugh.
But I'm going to anyway.
All right.
Well, what we also have is some more updates here from our friends over at the Amarillo Sod Poodles.
Only I'm not allowed to call them anymore that right now because they are the Yellow City
pigweeds.
and I'm going to tell you why.
We don't have a break,
but I didn't want to let you guys know,
of course,
that now is a great time

we're going to have some great exclusive content,
including Damon and I are going to be recording
a D-BACs after Dark episode here,
probably on Monday,

and some of his issues with Chase Field
being so welcoming to our division rival.

next diehard right now. And I want to thank all of you guys that have already signed up for
die hard. You guys are the best. And I appreciate you guys, of course, for supporting this show,
supporting this host. Of course, I've told you guys who I'm not a fan of, not a fan. But I do appreciate
you guys doing all that. Now, the other day, I did not give the Emeril Osad Poodles, the flowers that
they deserve for sending me out this wonderful merch that I'm wearing right now. And mostly it was
because of my confusion. First, I had no idea what they were going to be sending me or what was
in the box. And then second, when I pulled it out, there was no information accompanying this
rad merchandise for me to understand exactly what any of it meant. But I did come to research it.
I did come to find out, dig in a little bit. And I come to find out that the Amarillo Sod Poodle's
new identity for 2025, or alternate identity, is the Yellow City pigweeds. And of course,
Yellow City is kind of an affectionate term for Amarillo. It references the iconic yellow
soil and wildflowers that kind of blanket the Amarillo area in spring.
And the new identity deepens to the connection to their beautiful landscape.
So that's that part.
And it also brings attention to the pigweed plant, which is a plant.
It's not marijuana, I found out, which I very much thought it was.
But it's a distinctive species found in the Texas panhandle.
And it transforms into a tumbleweed.
And that's what's chasing this guy around on my hat.
So that's kind of this whole thing.
The new identity honors Amarillo's environmental richness,
and it couldn't be more different from their previous identity,
which made me giggle every time we talked about it because it was the calf fries,
which are fried bull balls, which they sell at their stadium in Hodge Town.
So it couldn't be more of a vibe change from the calf fries.
Could not be more of a vibe change, but I appreciate it.
I'm with it.
And Brandon Chips says looks like weed, though, for sure.
It kind of does.
It kind of does.
Well, one thing right now that's going very well for the Amarillo Sod Poodles is one Lou James Gruver,
formerly known as Gino Groover.
He's been having himself quite the year so far for the sod poodles.
He is currently hitting 300, 364 with a 580 slug.
He has a 944 OPS, seven home runs 16 RBI this season.
Another really fun story going on with the sod poodles.
Christian, Christian Robinson.
Christian Robinson is playing for the sod poodles,
and he's been having himself a fairly outstanding season so far as well.
In 97 at bats, he has a 289 batting average with a 415 on base percentage,
a 577 slug, and a 992 OPS.
He has six home runs and 18 RBI.
He's got lots of extra base hits.
He's got 14 extra base hits this year, 21 walks to 37 strikeouts.
And I mean, again, you talk about incredible.
stories. The Diamondbacks have a few within their minor league organization.
Trey Mancini is an incredible story waiting to happen. But after everything that Christian
Robinson has been through, it is just great to see him putting up these kind of numbers.
I don't know if this is going to translate over to him, you know, getting back to a point
where he could be on the major league club. But like Ernesto Esther, Ernesto says right here in the
chat, he says, I'm here for the K-Rob redemption story. Me too. Me too. Good stuff. On the
bad end, the Hispanic Titanic himself, Ivan Melendez is only hitting 186 with a 255 on base
percentage and a 419 slug. So he's not having a great season so far. Tommy Troy, though, another
name people are very familiar with, potentially a future second baseman for this team. He's
been having a great season as well. He's currently hitting 305, 438. He has a 419 slugging
percentage and he has an 857 OPS. So again, good contributions from some names that Diamondbacks fans
recognize and these are guys that uh that yeah definitely could end up being uh being big for this
team in the future still just at the double a level so still some work to do but uh human lin
he's up in reno and that's something that of course makes us very excited around here we are big
uh we are big human lin fans on this podcast but another person who we are a huge fan of uh i could
probably throw shade at espo for this today kevin i mean i like i feel like i should deep
down inside.
But we had one Sierra Santos in studio today.
She was here in her Serpentish jersey.
If you are not familiar with Sierra Santos,
she's MLB network host.
She was also a big part of the Diamondbacks video.
In fact, she narrated the Diamondbacks launch video for their new City Connect jersey.
So it was an absolute thrill to see her.
We're old friends from the Diamondbacks press box.
She used to work right here in town at Fox 10.
and ESPO had an amazing interview with her.
I think it's for Southwest bias.
I don't know.
Maybe it's just,
maybe it was just to spite me.
I know there was some discussion about it
wasn't a good idea to let me talk to her,
which I kind of,
I kind of take exception to just a little bit.
Kevin, what are your thoughts on that?
Was that for the best?
Did you guys discuss this as a group
to not let me talk to her?
No, in fact,
I was arguing with our guy, Damon Dogg,
because apparently she arrived like 10 minutes after I left.
and so I felt like as a friend of mine he should have let me know that yeah yeah you would have come back so you and I were kind of in the same boat of being left out not really I much rather feel like I deserved an interview with one Sierra Santos but good news is she's going to be joining us on this show hopefully next week or the week following that we got a little preview though from your interview with ESPO and the first thing here is her talking about I believe it's the first time that she saw the Serpientis
Jersey, is that right? Or this is on keeping the City Connect jersey secret, actually. And we both
kind of went through a very similar thing. This is what she had to say about trying to keep the secret
of the new City Connect jersey. When they were developing the concept behind it and showing me,
you know, this is what we're thinking and the vignettes and the montages, all that to when they finally
sent me the mock up for the jersey, I,
I see, look, I just got shells.
And it was embargoed.
They're like, you can't share this with anyone.
And I'm like, how?
Like, it was so, it was the hardest secret I've ever kept.
I can't agree with her more.
And Kevin, Kevin knows.
I struggled with this.
You guys know, I didn't even do a good job at keeping the secret.
I let out way too much information before the actual jersey was dropped.
But yeah, sometimes when you see something as beautiful as a Serpienti's jersey, like one, one thing I will say is the mockup that she's talking about.
I also saw, and it didn't do the jersey justice.
Like seeing the little flat, two-dimensional image of the jersey
does not do the jersey justice,
especially when you see it in the team shop or on somebody.
It's absolutely gorgeous.
Obviously, it's gorgeous on Sierra,
but she had a fun promo that you guys got to see
where they recorded her out on the mound,
and they had like the purple lights.
And she had a very funny story about the timing on that.
what she had to say about them trying to get the lights right with that,
uh, that introductory promo.
So I that the whole lights thing, that wasn't scripted.
That was improv.
Oh, very nice.
They had that idea as we're on the mound.
So it was it, it was just planning to be, uh, darkened lights, uh, just me illuminated on
the mound.
And then somebody had the idea to all of a sudden shoot the studio lights or shoot the, um, stadium
lights on as I was saying it. And so I'll give you, hold on, let me see. Oh, I don't know where my phone is.
So like somebody's literally on the phone like trying to cue them because it takes a second when the,
when the lights switch on. So he's like he's as soon as they hit like a keyword, he's like,
go, go, go into the phone. And then they switched lights. It took, it took maybe, it took a lot of tries.
I don't want to say it to, I mean, it was like six or seven. They're like, we're so sorry. I'm like,
dude, I'm here all day. Like, you're fine.
Well, you will get more of that on Southwest
Bias. I don't know. I wasn't even, I wasn't
I was lost there. I'm back. I'll try to
get this together, but don't miss out on that
episode with Southwest Bias with Espo and
one Sierra Santos. And again,
she is a huge Diamondbacks fan.
She's thrilled to see this team doing the things
that they're doing. And of course, so are we all.
Another fun thing was she told me today that
her favorite baseball player of all time was Randy Johnson.
And of course, as many of you saw on the broadcast tonight, Randy Johnson was there.
He was in the broadcast booth giving some amazing commentary.
He proceeded to talk about all the times.
He struck out 20 or 19 guys and either got a loss or no decision, which if you were around
in those days, that happened a lot around here.
You talk about this offense being inconsistent now.
Boy, let me talk to you about the days that Randy Johnson used to get one run of support in a two-run game.
Those were some days.
But hey, great stuff.
And, of course, make sure not to miss that.
And of course, the ending of my story here is that Sierra did get to meet Randy Johnson today.
And I did ensure, I asked, made sure he was nice and he was.
So, of course, shout out to making people's dreams happen, right?
It doesn't matter how long you've been in the game like this.
You still have favorite people that you never got a chance to meet.
And it's always great to get a chance, especially someone like Randy Johnson.
I'll never forget how excited Brian Danielson, aka Daniel Bryan, was here at Chase Field when he was the WW champion to meet Randy Johnson.
That was literally all he wanted to do.
He was a Seattle kid.
He was like, can I meet Randy Johnson?
Like, let's make that happen.
So Randy, of course, always making people's dreams come true.
But this was a big win for the Diamondbacks,
a great step in the right direction here for this four game series.
Huge three more game series this weekend.
Make sure you guys get out to Chase Field.
Support this team.
They need you out there.
They need Diamondbacks fans here.
And of course, they need you guys to be louder than the Dodgers fans.
Do we have any super chats or anything else I missed here?
Oh, yes, we do.
All right.
What do we got?
Oh, yeah.
Stephen Bananas says,
but the Dodgers.
That's the best I can do.
I miss the days of being able to curse on this show, Kevin.
I really, really do.
I think there was something from JA
a little while back if you could find it.
I think he had a question.
I was going to acknowledge it,
but I don't remember what he said.
So if you can find that, Kevin, I'd appreciate it.
But, of course, we appreciate you guys so much
for being here, for supporting this team,
and just for being awesome in general.
I appreciate you guys.
Like I said,
This is a fun time.
I haven't seen the team shop this busy in a very long time.
I don't think that there was any point this evening where you could go into the team shop
and actually not be wondering if a line, if there was a long line.
He was asking about, I think he was asking about Mark Grace.
I believe that was his question.
Somebody asked about Mark Grace because they said that they hadn't seen Mark Grace on the broadcast
in a while and it's funny because I actually saw there it is that was the question I wanted to get to
Jay asked is Mark grace okay I know he had a few days off a few weeks ago and during the post game
seemed to stumble a bit I hope nothing is wrong there anywhere here anything I saw him tonight I went over
and it was one of my first time seeing Mark this season so I went over and said hi and he was great
so I don't I think he's all good but again I was I think he was on the pregame show I think I saw him on
the pregame show a little bit. But yeah, no, I'm Philly on this. There's some, there's some people
missing. There's some things. Got to give a shout out while I can to our guys, Steve Zinsmeister.
Steve is my former co-host over at Arizona Sports 98.7. We did Ain't No Fang together. And I just
have to wish him and his wife, Danielle, just absolute best congratulations on their new little
baby girl. So if you've missed Steve on the pregame and postgame show, it's because Steve is a new
father to a perfect little angel and it's going to change his life forever.
I'm so happy for him.
So he's going to take some time off, but he will be back soon.
For the meantime, we got our guy Luke Lupinski over there,
Luke Lupinski over there doing pregame and post game and he's been doing a great job.
So again, don't miss any of that action.
Most importantly, do not miss getting out to Chase Field this weekend.
It's going to hit differently.
AZ Catch G, G, thank you so much for your super chat.
He says, good seeing Kevin.
BTFD Ginkle on the mound.
Let's go, baby.
I'm not doing that last part. Kevin, you want to do that last part?
Oh, yeah, bear down.
Okay, there you go.
And B's says that frauders pack hits different.
Yes, it does, bees.
Yes, it does.
I don't know why.
It's just so satisfying to beat the Dodgers.
And again, that might be a little bit of that little brother, big brother syndrome.
But who cares?
I don't care.
Do you care?
No, we're just happy.
It's a great night.
Enjoy your night.
Make sure you guys enjoy this win because I'm going to have to do it again tomorrow.
Until then, we hope you guys.
have a wonderful evening. We have no show tomorrow. I know you might be a little bit disappointed
by that, but I am taking a three-day weekend. Kevin has been putting in a tremendous amount of work
around here at PH&X. So he's going to get some well-deserved time off as well. So we will be back on
Monday with another Mailbag Monday show. I might pop in and do a quick like 10-minute recap after some
of these games, maybe on Twitter, maybe on the actual website. But of course, I'm just going to go
sleep a lot is what I'm going to go do. I'm also going to watch these games and I hope you do
the same. Make sure you're cheering for this Diamondbacks team. But yeah, I do.
Realma's right. We're taking a night off on City Connect Jersey debut. We've been putting in a
lot of city connect work around here. So it's kind of kind of it. But yes, Stephen, I'm taking a
three day weekend and it's against the Dodgers and I'm going to enjoy myself. Maybe you guys should
do the same. Make sure you go out and see some baseball. Make sure you also follow us on Twitter.
I am at cap underscore caveman with a k.
Kevin is at KevO post.
Our show is at PHNX underscore Dbacks.
But as always, all roads lead to at PHNX underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
We appreciate you guys so much.
Kevin, I don't know how much time we have left here, Kevin.
We got like 55 seconds and counting.
All right.
Do we have anything else?
I wanted to ask you a question because last night we had people in this very chat.
some of you who may still even be here who said Catelle washed.
Cotel has no offense.
Cotel can't do this.
They said Gabi was watched.
You're no good.
He came back from injury.
Now he's old.
Yep.
What happened?
What happened?
Cotell Marte had an absolute bomb.
An absolute bomb on Yamamoto's head.
What happened is you let the snakes get hot.
And everybody's cheering.
I thought he was washed.
I thought he was washed.
Don't let the snakes get hot.
Whatever you do, don't let the snakes get hot.
