Starting point is 00:00:00 The Diamondbacks waste another gem from Ryan Nelson, giving him no run support and a loss to the Mets. We're talking about that. Plus, Ryan Walshmidt, making his Major League debut, and me and Damon are going to attempt to squash our beef. Don't you go anywhere? We're starting right now. Well, hello, and welcome in to another edition of the PHNX Diamondbacks podcast, live. From Studio K, presented by our friends in Circle K. A little angry at that one.
Starting point is 00:00:36 That studio K, that live, that was for the office. That was an angry lot. I'm angry. I'm angry and I'm sick of the Diamondbacks offense sucking. And we got to see that again tonight, wasting another absolute gem and quality start from yet another starting pitcher. My name is Derek Montia, occasionally known as your mayor of PHNX. And I'm thrilled, as always, to have you here as family with us tonight.
Starting point is 00:01:02 We're going to vent. We're going to scream. We're going to praise Ryan Walshman. And then by the end, hopefully me and Damon are going to be friends again. but the offense didn't do much in order to help us mend our differences here. But I do got Damon Dog on the ones and twos tonight. He's my dog. He's your dog. He's everyone's dog. It's Damon Farrell. And of course, this show is brought to you by our friends at Bet365.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Go download that app right now. Use our code of PH&X365 and get yourself some bonus bets. Bet365, where winning is everything. And we're also brought to you by our friends at GameTime. Download the GameTime app. Create an account and use code PHNX for $20 off your first purchase. terms do apply and come to a baseball game like Candace did tonight and she says yes can we bring back Derek yelling I think we need that I don't know if I have the spirit left in me I do believe the
Starting point is 00:01:52 diamondbacks offense has has broken my spirit I don't know if I have the ability to yell anymore I can't muster up the energy but we'll see if I can get there before the end of this episode the Diamondbacks lose tonight's game to the Mets by a score of three to one in extra innings again on a night where Ryan Nelson looked brilliant and shoved and overall in nine innings the Diamondbacks pitching staff held the Mets to just one run and two goddamn hits and they lost the game. They dropped to 17 and 20 on the season and the Diamondbacks are now two and two this season in extra inning games.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Ryan Nelson again, like I said, he was brilliant tonight only allowing one run for his second start in a row but the D-Backs offense just remains absolutely stagnant even with Ryan Waldschmidt making his major league debut tonight. We're going to get into Walt Schmidt. We're going to get into the Alec Thomas DFA more. We got a lot to talk about on this episode, even though this is a loss. And me and Damon both want to just get out of here as quickly as we humanly can.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Hit that like button for the boys partying up here on a Friday night. Obviously, you know, not the best game in the world. But, but hey, we're walking, we're rocking sandals and socks both of us tonight. Yeah, it's true. As far as things looking up, Things have definitely at least improved a little bit around here, but they have not improved for the Diamondbacks offense. This offense remains terrible. And in fact, you could even say this offense outperformed the Mets tonight, but the fact that they couldn't string together timely hits and hit into key outs in big moments.
Starting point is 00:03:23 This team also only put up one run, but they weren't able to muster up any and extra innings, and they lose once again by a score of three to one. It was absolutely a pitcher's duel here between Nellie and Nolan McLean on a Friday night at Chase Field. The roof was open because fireworks were happening, even though it was 101 degrees outside today. I was very hot. And the bats were cold. The bats were cold for the Diamondbacks. Corbyn Carroll did double in the first inning with two outs, and that gave you hope. It's great to see Corbyn putting some extra base hits together and looking more like himself
Starting point is 00:03:55 after he went through like a little mini, you know, slump, if you will. but Corbin doubled in the first inning. He gets stranded. And then in the second inning, starts off with Nolan Arnato, hitting a leadoff home run to tie the game up at one. It was his sixth of the year, 405 feet to left field,
Starting point is 00:04:16 101.8 miles per hour off of his bat. And I mean, honestly, Damon, I got to say, like, we've, you know, Arnado had a slow start, and he's still not doing great, but right now he's currently one of the hottest hitters on the team currently hitting 271 with a 769 OPS. If you told me that we would get this out of Aronado, I would have said that this deal
Starting point is 00:04:39 picking him up was going to be the deal of the century. Like he doesn't even have to hit much better than he's hitting right now. The problem is, is that he is, you know, again, this was like when Ildamara Vargas was on his streak or when the six through nine hitters were kind of the guys towing the load for this team, he needs help. He can't do it on his own and you can't really expect Nolan Aronado to be your best offensive player in the year of our Lord 2026, Damon. Yeah, those conversations about, you know, it's time to cut bait now before he hurts
Starting point is 00:05:08 this team too much. Look a little bit silly now when you're, when you're holding them up in the light. Because Nolan Oranato has been pretty damn good. Like, I'm, you know, obviously it hasn't been perfect. He had a rough stretch. But, you know, what, what did you say he's hitting now? Like, did you, did you say the stats now on the season? I mean, I would imagine it actually looks pretty solid here.
Starting point is 00:05:29 he's hitting 271 Derek with six home runs 18 RBI we know he's manning that third base position the defense has started to look a little bit better now that uh you know he he started to put it together at the plate but yeah like you said it's it's not enough for this team like he can't be he's not 2017 Colorado Rockies Nolan Aeronado who's going to just carry a lineup right like I think that everything we wanted out of Nolan was good steady floor and be like the same sixth best hitter on the team the seventh best hitter on the team and right now he's the second best hitter on the team yeah and and and that's not good enough well third behind waltchmidt no tomorrow barn well of course ryan waltzman is is a 1,000 he's a 1,000 hitter with a 2,000 ops
Starting point is 00:06:15 all right i'm sure we'll dedicate about half the show to that later but you should we should because it's really the only positive thing that has happened in our life tonight besides no lan arnato hitting that solo ever maybe the diamondbacks were hit to just held to just one more hit after that for the majority of the game, Damon. I mean, that's what's nuts is, again, we've seen this team scoring bunches. I know, but still, they did a good job tonight of being patient and getting them out of this one fairly early. But the Mets bullpen was good.
Starting point is 00:06:48 They were solid. I mean, McLean went six innings, just like I think Nellie went six and a third, right? Six and two thirds. But, I mean, again, both guys, one earn run, over six innings pitch for both guys. Great night for both starting pitchers, really. And the Diamondbacks bullpen continues to be solid, but it was this offense. It was this offense and this offense continues to be disappointing. You had in the seventh inning with two outs, Gabby walks, Jose Fernandez with single.
Starting point is 00:07:14 That would be his hit. And again, like, when you look at the lineup, the big problem truly is Perdomo, Catelle, Carol, up at the top. Del Castillo has been a little bit of a black hole as far as office. offense is concerned. It's probably the worst cleanup hitting. 211, it's 6.06, like, OPS. Like, it's not great. And it feels like base runners get on, and then you get to Del Castillo, and it ends the inning. And then you get base runners on, and then it gets to Barrosa, and Barrosa ends the inning.
Starting point is 00:07:46 Verosa, quite frankly, needs to be addressed. I mean, if we're DFAing Alec Thomas, barosa, yes, has had a lot of extra base hits this season, but he is still hitting 187 with a 629 OPS. I know we're waiting for Lawler to get back and I know Barrosa doesn't have any you know minor league options left but still man I feel like when you're talking about moving on from someone
Starting point is 00:08:10 like Alec Thomas I feel the same perhaps about Jorge Barrosa and I feel terrible I feel like a shit heel sitting here saying any of this about any of these guys but just comparatively if you are if you DFAed Alec Thomas what is
Starting point is 00:08:25 Barrosa giving you so much more than Alec Thomas right and again it felt like that in this game where those spots in the lineup del and and barosa unfortunately were just kind of like the that's where any kind of rally or any kind of effort for this team to score a run would collapse um and i don't know man again like if you told me that someone like jose fernandez would get called up and be hitting 290 and old man nolan ronado who am i to judge that would be hitting 271 i i would be oh and vargas by the way hitting 353 with a 971 ops i would say what is the problem with his team. What is the problem? And again, it's this weird way where they can get hits and they can
Starting point is 00:09:04 get base runners, but then those rallies just instantly fall apart. And it seems to be consistently the same guys in the lineup, including when Alec was in there that just kind of, you know, have those moments collapse on them or end without anything productive being done, right? And they just don't play complimentary baseball. They don't play complimentary baseball. They haven't for a couple of years now where it feels like, you know, every single time that one facet of your team is, is, you know, finally firing on all cylinders, you've been begging the pitching. You've been begging the pitching. Noah's here, everyone to show up and give you performances.
Starting point is 00:09:42 You had a meeting. You had a meeting about it. And look at. Can we fit all the starting, can we fit the entire starting lineup into Tori's office so he can talk to them like he did the starting rotation? Because I feel like that's what we need. We need a conversation to be had, uh, something to be said. I mean, I even asked Tori about that meeting, and he gave himself very little credit for it, which understandably so.
Starting point is 00:10:04 He's not the one out there putting the work in and getting the job done. It's been the starting pitchers. Three quality starts out of their last four starts. And how many wins do they have? One in that span. One. It's bad. I mean, obviously you went against Paul Skeens and Nolan McLean.
Starting point is 00:10:22 I think that that bears noting those are two of the best pitchers in baseball, if not the two best pitchers. if not the two best pitchers in baseball. And McLean's been money all year. And Skeens has been money despite a brutal opening day performance and has a sub-2-4 ERA at this point. So, like, they're monsters. I get it. But, you know, you've gotten monstrous performances
Starting point is 00:10:43 out of your pitching staff in those games. And you've lost both of them because your offense hasn't shown up and provided just a floor of being decent, right? And all you needed was three runs, two runs in both those games. And you're winning both. of those baseball games and you can't even get that you can't even you can't even get one in the case of the paul skein's game and and so you know is it's just not good enough right now and you know also
Starting point is 00:11:08 derrick like you you mentioned ADC who is as i said and i kind of said it while you were talking but like probably the worst cleanup hitter in MLB right now and that's not a a a slight at him i think he is a player that has potential and you know can probably can hit in the right situation in the right role. But he's not your starting cleanup hitter game in and game out of a good MLB lineup. At this moment in time of his career, especially. You know, Jorge Barrosa, yes, he's had his moments this season. It's cooled off a lot recently.
Starting point is 00:11:42 I didn't realize he was hitting that low at this point, Derek, in the 180s. Yeah. Because that's what Alex Thomas was hitting when he got DFA. I know. And Barrosa had been hitting higher than that, like in the 230 range, right? But all those hits had been extra base hits. So you're like, I'll live with 230 if he's. hit next year with his OPS being
Starting point is 00:11:58 750 now that he's down to hitting 180 it's like well he's not getting any hits because that's how his average has dropped so much but it has to be said as well and you know this is coming from me Derek and I said this to you before we started the show the game ended when Heraldo Pardomo got out
Starting point is 00:12:14 with two outs and that was that's seventh inning yeah and that was it Brosa walked loaded the bases for Pardomo the second that happened you even made fun of the tweet I sent out from the account because I was sent out a I was pumped I was like, yeah, let's get the Frog Domo tweet going. This is it.
Starting point is 00:12:30 This is going to be that moment. And G, just grounds out softly to the right time. I didn't make, I don't think I made fun of it. It was, it was more of like things that didn't happen. And that thing that didn't happen was that big moment.
Starting point is 00:12:40 I was trying to, I was, Derek, what I was trying to do was a nice little. Yeah, yeah. No, men in black style.
Starting point is 00:12:50 What are we talking? What are you talking about? That never happened. Wait, what? Peralobo didn't come up with the, with Bruners. in scoring position, did he?
Starting point is 00:12:58 And unfortunately he did. And he's usually our risk king. And we have a lot of faith in Perdomo in those moments. And on the radio call, which I was listening to at the time, you know, Candy even said like, this is your guy. This is the guy you want up right now. And he's been playing a little bit better as of recently. But bad A, B, big moment.
Starting point is 00:13:19 And you would have won the game if he gets a hit there. And you lose the game because he's unable to do anything in that moment. and it sucks because I want to, you know, sweep it under the rug as much as the next guy. But to me, that was right when that happened, I said to myself, we are so losing this baseball game. We are, you know what, Derek, I'm just going to do it 14 minutes in. We are so fucked. There it goes. It's Debacks after dark, it's past 11 p.m.
Starting point is 00:13:45 I mean, on a Friday. Your kid shouldn't be up watching this show at this point. No, they should. I was like, we are so fucked, Derek. After, after he didn't get a hit there. And I knew the game was over because that's, just deep that's the way that these debacks games go and kevin ginkle coming in i was like he's been unbelievable recently 100% for you know he's getting a hit off of him first pitch rip double and down
Starting point is 00:14:08 the left field line and you're like all right well it was a fun fun little ryan nelson comeback performance while it lasted we can hang our hat on a couple things ryan nelson two performances in a row i've looked very very good uh you know that the wind in wrigley was not maybe a fluke maybe Ryan Nelson has figured it out a little bit. And then Ryan Waldgman gets his first MLB hit. But lots to be upset about tonight as well. This comes from our guy, T. Givens at all of baseball on Twitter. But over the past seven days, the Diamondbacks rank last in MLB in batting average at 177, slug at 289, and OPS at 548.
Starting point is 00:14:48 They are 28th and on-base percentage at 259 and 22nd in runs scored. It's a shame. And again, in this game, the Diamondbacks needed a spark, and they turned to recently called up Ryan Walschmidt to bat for ADC in that cleanup spot. And I needed a home run in that moment more than I needed air. But he still delivered, even though he didn't hit a home run. And he got his first Major League base hit, which is more than most of this roster did tonight. And so far, so good, as far as Walsh Mitt is concerned.
Starting point is 00:15:25 and we got a lot of post-game stuff here about specifically that hit. We'll get into the 10th inning and how they lost and everything, but I don't want to do that right now. I want to first hear from Ryan Walschmidt on his first Major League hit. Damon, let's see our beautiful boy talk about making his debut. It was great, you know, obviously getting the pinch hit in a pretty close game and late in the game. I was up under the in the cages getting ready, and the pitcher came in that we thought I was going to come in,
Starting point is 00:15:59 and the situation came up. So I was already mentally pretty ready, obviously walking up to the plate, you know, taking it all in. The fans were pretty loud and cheering for me. And the coach got a timeout, which I think really helped. You know, I kind of settled in a little bit, realized, like, you know, calmed it down, made the moment back to normal. And once I saw the first pitch, it was just the game of baseball again.
Starting point is 00:16:22 I got up there. I knew I had a game plan. I was thinking he was going to throw that pitch first pitch and I was debating on swing your first pitch. But then I was like, no, you can't swing at the first pitch. You're your first at bat. So I took that one and then, you know, it was just back to normal again. And just continue to go with what I planned going up to the plate. And I got another pitch that was part of that plan. And I was able to get the bat on it and pretty good swing on that pitch and I ended up getting a hit. What a whimsical way to talk about your first major league at bat. He didn't talk about that at bat like it was something that just happened in the game, Damon. He talked about it like he was a 70-year-old man discussing his first at bat from 35 years ago, is almost what it sounded like. The details, everything about it. Like, I don't know. It's just, it's very akin to our pregame meeting with him.
Starting point is 00:17:14 He just seemed very calm, prepared for the. moment and he just seems like a baller man it's exciting to have somebody here that the minute that they make their debut they get that first hit out of the way which can always be a little bit daunting right you know like we know that's something that hold over like lawler's head for a exhibit a jordan lawler so guys knees were shaking when he was in the batter's box for the first you know 50 of them right like and that and no offense like i'm like i'm not in no offense like I hope Jordan Lawler has figured it out. He looked confident and good in the 18 at bats he got before he fractured his wrist this season,
Starting point is 00:17:55 and we have a lot of hope for him. I saw him tonight. He said he was feeling great, gave me crap about me saying I was feeling all right. I told him I'm 45 years old and there's hardly days that I always feel that I feel great. There's not going to be many days I get out of bed talking about. He said, how you doing? He's like, all right. He's like, just all right.
Starting point is 00:18:13 What's wrong with you? Did you break your hand? You know, that kind of thing. What's to complain about podcast, man? Fat podcast guy, huh? You got to get up hot dogs in the press lounge tonight, big guy? Start being disrespectful. I don't know where.
Starting point is 00:18:29 Jordan Lawler's a sweetheart, Derek. He would never do that. No, he would never do that. I love him and he loves me. But Tori seems to love Ryan Waldschmidt, and he talked about what you just said, like, and what 2 BMC is talking about, 2BMC in the chat says, dude has a presence, love AT, but our dub, we're going on our dub, has a confidence that AT lacks, and that is definitely the case, at least so far in a very, very,
Starting point is 00:18:53 very small sample size. But here's what Tori had to say about Walschman getting that first hit. Moment, you know. I love they panned up to his family. I got a chance to watch them celebrate that hit. I know his brother came in. His college coach gave him the night off so he can come here and celebrate with his brother. Those are special moments.
Starting point is 00:19:12 So they'll love a nice celebration. And it has a nice approach. He didn't look glossy odd when I set him up there. he looked like he was just engaged and ready to go, and that's who he is. And that's what they brought. That's why they brought him here. That's why they brought him here. And to be fair, in talking about some of this stuff like Brose's struggles and everything,
Starting point is 00:19:31 it really feels like there are other guys that are equally prepared to make that jump from AAA Reno up here to this squad, at least, at least to give them a shot. You know what I mean? Tommy Troy, Lou James Groover, there's a bunch of guys that are doing the exact thing that this team is not right now. which is hitting the ball. Oh, Cade Stroud, that trade is starting to look better and better every single day. Every single day.
Starting point is 00:19:55 But there was a lot of talk about Ryan Walshman's family being there tonight. Obviously, we know that's a huge moment and a great moment. And one that families don't always get to be there for. In fact, Ryan's parents were supposed to be in New Orleans watching his brother pitch this weekend. And when he got the call, those plans changed really fast. But also, Ryan's brother got. the permission from his coach to get the weekend off and come watch his brother make his major league debut. It was a special moment for everybody. But I love this story because Waldy was
Starting point is 00:20:28 watching his hit back on the iPad and he'll explain the rest. Here's what he had to say about seeing his family's reaction to him getting that first major league hit. Yeah, everyone came out on the field after the game, my brother, my parents and my friends from home. And, you know, the really cool part about it was I was watching the swing back and the location of the pitch back on the iPad when I got back to the dugout. And the second half of the video is just the broadcast. And it panta, my family, and they were all cheering. And, you know, I ended up watching that back more times than I even watched the swing.
Starting point is 00:21:02 So it was pretty cool to see all the emotion that they had after that swing. And it was pretty cool. What are we going to do with the baseball? I don't know. I'll probably give it to my parents. You know, they're going to probably put it in a case and put it up in the house somewhere. So I know that's going to mean a lot to them. and I think they're going to really love that.
Starting point is 00:21:19 So I'm definitely going to probably do that and give it to them. What a kid, man. And what a moment, right? And like, as a parent, that's the dream, is that your kid gets that major league hit, gives you the ball that you get to stare at every day and think about all of those times. You got to spend weekends driving him to travel ball
Starting point is 00:21:37 and watching games and double-headers and terrible weather conditions and everything that these families go through, man. It's a night like this that truly feels like, everything paid off and everything came together. Yeah, it's awesome. It's awesome to see. I know that a lot of people, Derek,
Starting point is 00:21:54 and, you know, this has been a rough stretch of baseball for the Arizona Diamondbacks where we're sitting here. The post game shows are kind of a slog. We've been doing a lot of lost post game shows recently. People are fed up, right? Like a lot of Tory talk.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Every time this team's losing, lots of to tarry talk of this and put it back in the Xbox controller, Damon, because we don't need the batteries for this. we got to take our wins where we can get him. And this was an awesome moment. And it's beyond your feelings on Tori Lovolo. And I said this as well to you before the show started.
Starting point is 00:22:29 But Ryan Walshman is going to outlast Tori Lovolo in Arizona. He's going to be a part of this team's long-term future. And we just got to witness a pivotal moment in his career tonight. And I think it's just something to put a smile on your face and be happy about when you get to see his family in the stands, cheering it on. You know, just kind of, you know, the, and then also you get to see the makeup of a guy like Ryan Walschmidt in the clubhouse. Before the game, after the game, how confident he is. The way he's talking about it, like it's just not even that big of a deal. Yeah, I saw the first pitch.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Then it was just like being in every other batter's box I've been in my entire life. That's who Ryan Walshman is. And they talk about this guy doesn't have, you know, he's not a slugger. He's not a power bat. He's a professional, God damn. hitter, Derek. And you saw it in that moment right there. When he's down 0-1, he gets another strike from a really good reliever with like a 192 ERA or something. And what does he do? Sends a line drive out there pretty deep into the left field. I think that Steve, if you watch the replay,
Starting point is 00:23:34 even was like a little bit like you could tell he was reserved at first because he didn't know if it was a hit. Because he was like, that might have stayed up a little bit too high. Ryan Walsh Schmidt looks really damn good. I am pumped for Ryan Walshman. I'm sad to see Alec go. I said it a lot on our emergency pod that we did. And we could maybe round out the show talking a little bit more about that, Derek. But as for right now, I'm just excited that Ryan Walschman's on this team. You mentioned that there's other guys that could help this team, but nobody more so than I think Ryan Walshman, who is very prepared for this moment,
Starting point is 00:24:06 has been electric at every stop throughout the minor league system. And now he's ready to help this team win some baseball games. And I think that you have to be pretty excited and fired up for it. if you're a Diamondbacks fan. Regardless of your thoughts on anything else, if you're pissed at the team for losing a bunch of games, if you hate Tori, whatever. Ryan Waldschmidt's here.
Starting point is 00:24:26 He's here to stay. Be excited for it. That's Damon Farrell, the founder and proprietor of the Walshmit FC. Don't you forget it. We're going to take a quick break on the other side of this break. We're going to talk more about this loss, the offensive struggles,
Starting point is 00:24:40 and how good the pitching was until it wasn't in extra innings. Don't you go anywhere? You're watching the PHA next Diamondback show. Well, of course, here's hoping you never experience going through an accident or serious injury. But should that occur, the lawyer you hire does matter. And that's why you should check in with the husband and wife law team. First, Mark and Alexis Breyer are the husband and wife law team. Phoenix is their home where they've raised their eight children and where their focus is always on client results and giving back to the community.
Starting point is 00:25:08 And their team brings hundreds of years of combined trial experience with multiple certified specialists and personal injury and wrongful death. And the reason why that's important is because in this state, the state bar is certified less than 1% of all lawyers as specialists in injury and wrongful death litigation, making them experts in the field. They also go to trial for their clients. They know what needs to be done to prevail in front of a jury and will not shy away from representing you in court. Now, of course, they cannot guarantee the outcome of any case, but they can make promises to you as their client, including that you can cancel your fee agreement with them at any time for any reason. you can also be rest assured that you will receive as much in your pocket as they receive for their fee even if they have to reduce their attorney fees to do so and you have the right to trust that as your lawyers they will tell you both the strength and weaknesses of your claim so that you can make informed decisions if you had a serious injury contact the husband and wife law team first at 602 783 8841 or visit their website at the link in our show notes and tell them the mayor ph. to next send you. Starting point is 00:27:19 performance in a row for Nellie. Like Damon said, you know, that first game was game two of that Cubs series, and yeah, there were factors there in that game. It was a low-scoring game where the Diamondbacks lost two to nothing, but Ryan Nelson only gave up one run in that outing, and he did so again tonight. And man, he was filling up the zone and throwing strikes all night. night long. He did give up a lead off home run to Mark Vientos to start the second inning, and that would literally be the only mistake he would make the entire outing. He would give up one
Starting point is 00:27:51 other hit. And that was a two-oh slider that Viantos hit 401 feet to left center field. It was high and outside of the zone. In fact, even there in the extra inning, some of those hits, those doubles, I believe, were like down and out, the ones that the pitches ginkle through that got hit. So just credit to Mets hitters on a couple of these pitches on getting the bat on them. But Nellie was nice tonight. He struck out Soto as the
Starting point is 00:28:18 first batter of the game, by the way, on the very first pitch of the game, Gabby Moreno called for an ABS challenge and lost. And that that just felt like it set the tone for the day. It was just such a unnecessary early mistake.
Starting point is 00:28:35 And this is coming from a guy who just went on a tirade the other day on this very program about the Diamondbacks needing to use their challenges more and earlier in moments that they felt were big moments. I don't know. Maybe they were just trying to set up Soto because he did strike out. And then he struck out again in the sixth inning. Nelly got seven strikeouts total on the night, two of them being Juan Soto. He also got nine whiffs. And he threw his fourth seam just a little less than normal.
Starting point is 00:29:00 So it just goes to show that if Nellie can throw those complimentary pitches, you know, he can be even better. Like his fastball is so good. He just needs to throw his complimentary pitches just a little bit of the outing. He threw the four seam 59% tonight, which is just slightly down from his 62% usage average. He threw the cutter slash two seam 17% of the time. That seems to be a very effective pitch for him just on the way that it looks very similar to the four seam, but has a different break than his slider. He used a slider 9%, his sinker 7%, and his curveball 7%. Damon, do we have his pitch? chart image here and as you can see here again a lot of fastballs a lot a lot of fastballs right and most it you know there's there's not a huge correlation he did keep a lot of his fastballs up but there were some that were down outside all over the place I mean he kept his slider out of the zone the sinker made some mistakes with it but overall that that cutter was just a very complimentary pitch tonight and that's why you see so much red and dark red in there
Starting point is 00:30:08 because that's what Nelly does. But Nellie just needs something, just something that can look and move different than the four seam. His four seam is so good. And what piece of Yoshi said, some of his cutters were getting misdiagnosed as four seamers. Maybe, I don't know. I think some of his cutters were being miscategorized or his two seams were being miscategorized as sinkers, perhaps.
Starting point is 00:30:34 I don't really know. But he's throwing that two seam slash. Cutter more, and that seems to be very effective. He threw 95 pitches tonight, 66 of them for strikes. He goes six and two-thirds innings, two hits, one earn run, one walk, and seven strikeouts. Again, Nellie's second consecutive outing of giving up one-earned run. Last time, it was five and two-thirds against the Cubs. He gave up four hits, one earn-run, run, two walks, and four strikeouts. And since this rotation was called into Tori Lobalo's office for being bad, the D-BAC's rotation now has three quality starts in their last four games and still no run support. So again, I ask the
Starting point is 00:31:14 question, can we fit the entire starting lineup into Tori's office altogether? Because that seems to be what we need, Damon. But here's Tori talking about the loss tonight and this team not playing complimentary baseball. When you break down your game, right, you talk about the three areas pitching, hitting and defense. Two-thirds of it has been fantastic. And, you know, we get give up three runs today. I feel like if everything's moving in the right direction offensively, we have a totally different outcome. They're just grinding right now. And that's going to come around. They're going to have some opportunities to come up in the big moment. And, you know, I want there to be the right guy that wants to step into that environment with runners on base and get that big clutch two out hit.
Starting point is 00:31:59 And I feel like just a matter of time before it happened. So we, it's clear we're grinding. But as long as they're working and doing the right things and getting the right input, it'll find its way out on the right side of things here. So I thought Nellie was fantastic. I thought he ran out of gas there at the back end of his outing, and then we started maneuver in the bullpen. They did a really nice job. We just made some mistakes in the 10th inning.
Starting point is 00:32:28 I like the Ginkle matchup, and I just felt like if he made pitches, we would have been out of that and gotten into the dugout to hopefully won a game, but it didn't happen. But, you know, overall, I thought the day was good in several areas, with the exception of the offense just stalling out at the one run. And, you know, potentially I feel like we can do a lot more. And we will.
Starting point is 00:32:47 We're going to figure that out. Three out of the Diamondbacks four relievers tonight were outstanding. One was not. The Diamondbacks bullpen still remains incredible, but it just feels like we're still figuring out who is in the circle of trust and who is not in the circle of trust. and I'm sorry, but Kevin Ginkle, you are out of the circle of trust after tonight's complete disaster. With the ghost runner on in extra innings, Ginkle's very first pitch thrown was a sinker inside
Starting point is 00:33:17 that Mark Vientos hit for an RBI double to score Beatty and put the Mets up two to one. The very next batter was Carson Benj, rookie. His ginkle slider that he hit goes for an RBI ground rule double that put the Mets up three to one. It felt like Ginkl was never going to stop giving up doubles. It felt like this game was going to end 12 to 1, and it turned into an objective nightmare. He then gave up a single to Marcus Simeon, and then Benz advanced a third. Then Ginkle finally gets an out by getting M.J. Melendez to strike out for his only out recorded. He goes a third of an inning pitch, giving up three hits, two runs, one of them earned, one strikeout.
Starting point is 00:33:58 And again, Kevin Ginkle, you are out of the circle of trust. The person that's in the circle of trust, Johnny freaking lasagna, because he somehow got out of that inning without another run scoring. You had runners on the corners with one single out. He gets a fielder's choice, and they come home to get the runner at home, and then Carson Benj, or that was Carson Benj on the fielder's choice, and then Luis Terence grounds out to keep the game three to one at the time. So all parts of the bullpen worked except Kevin Ginkle,
Starting point is 00:34:29 and as we start to move closer and closer to the return of AJ Puck, who once again was there throwing bullpens today, looking tall and very Amish, and he will be back soon to dominate with his left-handed power. And again, somebody in that bullpen has to be out. So far, there have not been a lot of mistakes made by anybody, quite frankly, right? So, I mean, Paul Seewald is probably the one person you could say has made some, had some bad outings that is not going anywhere.
Starting point is 00:34:59 for the foreseeable future. So it does feel like, again, a few more bad outings from Kevin Ginkle might put him on the outside looking in as far as what the Diamondbacks do with their bullpen once AJ Puck does return, right? I think you're being a little hard on Kevin Ginkle. I am being hard on Kevin Ginkle.
Starting point is 00:35:15 You're goddamn right, I am. I mean, I'm not saying he doesn't deserve any blame tonight, but he had a 394 ERA going in. I think that any time that the Diamondbacks get in a game, and maybe this is something that Ashton, who I was going back, back and forth with a little bit in the chat is, you know, maybe on something about. Well, Ashton, Ashton doesn't know what he's talking about.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Every time we get in a ghost runner situation, it does feel like we lose. Yeah. Does it not? I mean, no, not really because they're two and two, but they haven't played a lot. You're just talking about historically. I didn't have confidence in Kevin Ginkle with a ghost runner on base. I feel a little bit better with him coming in with a clean inning. I don't feel like, I don't feel good at all ever about the ghost runner not scoring when it comes to
Starting point is 00:35:56 these. Johnny Lazzania. Come on, brother. I'm just saying look at the look at what these other guys have done you know what I mean I'm just saying that what I'm not going to get mad about a ghost runner situation the diamond back's not even able to get a run across with a ghost runner on second base that's indicative of the night itself and as Ernest says it should have been you you got it you got to win it in nine and then you don't even worry about what Kevin ginkle does out there with a with a guy that
Starting point is 00:36:24 starts on second base so I don't know I mean I I get it it's not good and you're right Like he should be trusted less in high leverage. You know what I think it is? Something like this, but I don't think he should be like sent down at the moment. I'm just saying like the, no, I'm not either. I'm not either. I'm just saying that there's going to be once again another roster crunch, more difficult decisions being made.
Starting point is 00:36:43 And right now, I mean, again, it always seems easy to look at someone like Brandon Garcia, you know, or one of the other young guys as, oh, well, you have minor league options. And I think that's the exact same thing as this Alec Thomas, Ryan Walschmidt situation. Why are we giving someone that has been inconsistent? Still be trustworthy, still take high leverage innings. Kevin Gingles still done a great job this year. But, you know, again, you're going to put the guy that maybe every once in a while kind of implodes in these situations versus someone like Brandon Garcia who still hasn't allowed an earned run and can give you not one but two left handed options in the bullpen when puck returns.
Starting point is 00:37:25 like there's, you know, again, there's a lot there when it comes to this bullpen and which pieces are going to remain and what's going to happen. I think that the Diamondbacks are not going to shy away from making more decisions like the Alec Thomas decision that was made today. They kind of have to at this point, right? They have to figure out a way to put the best team on the field. And again, this season, Damon, is one of those seasons where they kind of have to be all in. They have to be all in, right?
Starting point is 00:37:56 But we have Tori here talking about that starting pitching meeting. I asked them about the quality starts that have occurred since that meeting happened. And Tori gave all the credit to the pitchers. This is what he had to say. That's getting a lot of mileage. They're dudes. They're just, they're tough. They just want to go out there and pitch.
Starting point is 00:38:18 And, you know, I probably had 1% to do with that, really, to be honest with you, I just created an awareness and just told them, you know, this is what I'm seeing, go out there and reverse it and figure out how to go pitch deep into games and execute and put the ball on the plate. So, yeah, so what I said, I'm just proud of the way they've been getting after it. And it ebbs and flows, right? The season, the relievers have been very good, the hitting, the offense was great, and then the starters started to struggle a little bit.
Starting point is 00:38:49 We're going to put all three areas together and we will, but overall, these, these these starters are fantastic and they're going to figure it out. And whether I helped or not, I don't know, but I think it was more of them than me, be honest with you. Well, we have more from Ryan Nelson here in regards to his outing tonight. We know Nellie is not the reason why this team lost, even though Nellie did kind of take a blame for giving up one home run and one single run, but it's not his fault.
Starting point is 00:39:17 Here's what Ryan had to say about his outing. I would say that was probably the best the entire makes this felt so far this year. I just been working hard to try to lock in all the pitches and be able to use the aggressive manner and kill up the strike zone and jump the other guy. So I feel like tonight was definitely stuck in the right direction. I feel like getting close. I think we just, you know, just stuck with the process and kept working on all the things. And I think that it was just one of those days were all kind of clicked. So it wasn't my camera drop.
Starting point is 00:40:04 Actually, it was Jack Summers' phone drop. And then I just instinctually, as a nice guy, decided to pick it up, even though I was in the middle of filming a press conference scrum. That's what happened there, David. Sure. that's a great that was a great cover-up story for you dropping your camera in the middle of filming right now oh no i mean i assure you it wasn't because if i would have dropped my camera you would have heard a lot more clinking it wasn't me it was jack no it literally was me picking up jack's phone jack will tell you that why are you the one questioning me you know what i was gonna make up with your dumb ass and now i'm done forget that no i'm just no no no why did you even use that clip mr produce or guy?
Starting point is 00:40:46 Huh? Why are you using clips that are all jumbly around? See, look at this. We're turning on each other and I feel like it's the offense. I'm not turning on nobody. I don't know. You turned on me there. I'm impressed by your cover up story.
Starting point is 00:40:59 And again, as I said to Yoshi earlier this week, Derek, I'm willing to be the punching back of this fan base if I need be. I'll call Jack right now. I'll call Jack. I'll put him on the phone. It's all good. No, no, no, no, it's not all good. It's not all good.
Starting point is 00:41:13 It was all good until you start. questioning me and now it's not all good anymore. So now I got to call Jack and I'm calling the wrong Jack. Brother, it's 1130 at night. Can Jack go to bed? I know. No, no, I'm doing this. No, you're going to sit here and you're going to tell me. Jack's probably there in his home. Jack, are you available to talk to me on the show right now, Jack? Damon and I are having a debate about if I dropped my phone during the Nelly Press conference or if you did. And yeah, he said it's definitely me. Jack, just for Damon's sake, would you mind saying that one more time? It was definitely me. All right. There we go, Damon. Thank you, Jack. I love you. I'll see you
Starting point is 00:41:54 you this weekend at some point. All right. Gets Jack in on the cover story. This cover up is, it's beyond, it's deep. I mean, you have, you have thought this through. You have layers to this thing, and I respect that about you, Derek. Well, I was going to make sure if I'm going to, if I'm going to have a story, I'm going to make sure that I see it through to the end. You think I'm just going to give you a fake excuse and not have it not have it all in the bag wrong um but i'll tell you again the one thing that uh is probably causing a rift between me and damon is perdomo struggles or at least people accusing perdomo of struggling uh which damon has figured out based on stats that that's not actually hey i called them out tonight i want that i want that the record to show that i did you did
Starting point is 00:42:39 do that but um here's tory talking about perdomo struggles and he doesn't seem super concerned either. I think Jared's is good at grinding down at bats and waiting for the pitch that he's looking for and getting after it. And, you know, maybe he's trying to carry too much of the workload. I've had so many conversations with him. He's just got to, he's got to figure it out and he will. He's a good baseball player. But yeah, sometimes, and we're all thinking the same thing, like, what was that? Right. I think it, you think it, every fan at home thinks that. It's just sometimes these players have an out-of-body experience and he can't explain it, but he'll figure it out.
Starting point is 00:43:21 Well, one thing about tonight was the offense was missing Catele-Marté. He was scratched from the lineup about 90 minutes before the start of the game. Apparently due to illness, Tori was asked after the game about Cotel, and if he's doing okay, here's an update on Cotel-Marte. It was okay. He was not available. He was sent home with an illness.
Starting point is 00:43:44 So we're hoping that he rests up and wakes up tomorrow. It feels really good. So I haven't penciled into the lineup. So hopefully he makes a quick turnaround. Well, we got to give our Kingsnake to somebody, Damon, and not many people on the offense deserve it tonight. So we are once again going to have to give it to our starting pitcher, which I think we've done this a few times now on the last few shows.
Starting point is 00:44:08 Three of the last four have been Erod, E. Rod, Soroka, and Ryan Nelson. Zach Allen didn't win Kingsnake. But he was not terrible either. he had one bad inning, which is kind of the story of Zach Allen recently. But, yeah, I mean, all four of the starting pitching performances since hashtag the meeting have definitely, you know, been solid, right? They've done enough to, you know, win you these baseball games. Your offense has just really let you down. Well, let's go ahead and take a break.
Starting point is 00:44:38 And we are going to be, we're going to talk a little bit more about the numbers from this game, even though we don't want to. And then we are going to talk more about Alec Thomas, DFA'd. We have some audio from Mike Hazen that's interesting in regards to why the Diamondbacks chose to DFA Alec instead of using his final minor league option. We're going to talk about all this
Starting point is 00:44:58 on the other side of this break. Don't you go anywhere. You're watching the P.HNX Diamondback show. Well, we have a full season ahead of us still of Legends races, dusty desert nights, firework nights, me getting stuck in traffic, and hopefully some more Dback swings on deck even though we haven't heard that song in a while.

Starting point is 00:47:06 now including True Leave. Well, Damon, let's take a look at the numbers from tonight's game because there's not a lot that happened in this one, and these numbers will display that. The Diamondbacks lose this one by a score of three to one. They had two extra base hits to the Mets three. They were 0 for four of the runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, the Mets were three for six,
Starting point is 00:47:30 especially they're late in the extra 10th inning. Both teams were around 45% for their hard hit percentage. The Diamondbacks were at 46.2%. The Mets were at 44%. You also had similar expected batting averages as well. 168 expected batting average for the Diamondbacks to 162 for the Mets. And then last but not least, the ABS challenges, the Diamondbacks were one for three. Gabby was one for two, especially after burning the one in the very first at bat.
Starting point is 00:48:00 And then he went ahead and did it again. And he was correct when he was hitting, I believe, in the second inning. However, still got at least one right. How sure does he have to be on that second? one after missing on the first one of the game the ass chew and he probably got so short more sure than he's ever been as sure about anything in his entire life right that's what i was thinking i'm like there's just like i i can't believe like that he even bothered challenging again it's wild i know well and see kind of that's the problem too to a degree right you miss a challenge and then you
Starting point is 00:48:34 probably do shy away from you know the next challenge right you the next opportunity the next time that that presents itself just because you don't want to be wrong. And most likely you were very sure in that one instance. Like he was very sure in that first pitch today that that was wrong or that that that pitch was, you know, wrong. It was a wrong call. And he was wrong about that. But again, they did get Soto to strike out.
Starting point is 00:49:01 So maybe it was all part of the game plan. Get into Soto's head. Mess with him a little bit there early on. Soto actually had a really funny kind of reaction about it too. He was like smiling and kind of joking with Gabby. about missing it. So stuff like that makes the game fun. But anyway, all in all, the Diamondbacks here,
Starting point is 00:49:21 not doing great with their challenges and definitely not doing great, Damon, with their offense. And also I want to just say Loshi in the chat, as I like to call him, tried to call us out for our ABS challenges, which one did the Mets go wrong? This is where Yoshi takes an L. and I like to call them low sheet there. I'm going to tell you this,
Starting point is 00:49:44 just like when people were questioning earlier today, the fact that I set on an emergency podcast, Alec Thomas, still had a minor league option left, and then I got that confirmed by Tori and Mike Hazen and everybody. Don't question baseball reference and don't ever question fan graphs. Those two websites are never wrong.
Starting point is 00:50:03 We are wrong. They're not. If your numbers don't match up with their numbers, it's because you're wrong, not because fan graphs is wrong, not because baseball reference is wrong. And baseball savant is never wrong about anything. Baseball savant is the almighty true.
Starting point is 00:50:18 Oh, anyway. Every word is biblical. Yeah, it is. But obviously the big talk of today was Waldschmidt getting called up, Damon, and Alec Thomas being DFAed. And again, that was the talk of Chase Field. That was the talk everywhere. Like the mood was somber, and it sucks for it to be so somber on a day where Ryan. Walschmidt is called up.
Starting point is 00:50:44 There was so much joy, so much excitement for him, and it didn't really feel like his teammates necessarily shared in that with them due to how many of them were probably feeling, you know, pretty crummy about Alec Thomas, who's been a teammate of theirs, you know, dating back years and years and years, was not only removed from this major league roster, but designated for assignment. That was shocking.
Starting point is 00:51:11 The Ryan Walschmidt call-up is something that we've been beating the drum for since spring. So, and maybe even sometime last year, who knows. We've always loved the name Walshmidt. And when we had him on the show, it only furthered how much we wanted to see this guy get called up and get an opportunity at a major league level. However, it doesn't really feel like it should have been at the complete, you know, at the expense of Alex Thomas and his entire tenure with this team. What was interesting was we got to talk to Mike Hazen before the game. and Hazen was asked by our friend Jack Summers about DFAing, you know, Alec instead of doing the minor league option thing.
Starting point is 00:51:50 And Mike did not hold back as to the reason why they did this for Alex, for this organization, and again, to send a very clear message to Alec, you know, just about the Diamondbacks not wanting to hold him back, not wanting to keep him in minor league system. This is what Hazen had to say. Because if you're not exposed to 29 other teams where they could have had you, there may be a different mindset in terms of where you stand in the game of baseball. If I option you and you've gotten no exposure to 29 other teams, you can say that the Diamondbacks are holding me in AAA, but some other team would take me. That argument gets taken off the table if he gets through waivers.
Starting point is 00:52:32 Because 29 other teams can theoretically, he will both have to clear a trade threshold and a waiver threshold. John some interest in him? Yes, we've already gotten some calls. It has to be off waivers in seven days. A lot of information to take in there. And Damon asked me during it. He doesn't say he doesn't really understand the thought process behind this, right? Well, I guess I didn't understand the answer.
Starting point is 00:52:53 I wish it was maybe a little bit more direct as in like, we're doing Alec a favor? I don't think it's that. I don't think it's that. Well, yes. I think it's. Or they're trying to avoid the idea that the Diamondbacks are an organization that would, that would, you know, do a player dirty or something like that?
Starting point is 00:53:11 This is for Alex's development. What Mike is saying is in order to send, and again, I don't feel like at any point they were accusing Alec of not working hard to try to get better at the plate and to try to fix these issues, right? To try to, you know, again, we saw him working on that this past off season, and we were all hoping that the changes he had made with his leg kick and what he was working on with the low T with Carlos Santana was going to translate over to success for him. It seemed like it was in spring training. Alec looked good and he had some big at bats in the World Baseball Classic, right? But what Mike is saying here is that sending him down just kind of sends him down to sit
Starting point is 00:53:52 there at AAA and wait for the next opportunity, right? It doesn't really give Alec a wake-up call that this could be the end of your Major League Baseball career. I'm not saying it is because I still think AT is entirely too talented for this to be the end. but this is almost like dad stuff, right? This is almost like this is for your own good. And I want you to understand that one of two things are going to happen. Either another organization is going to come along and offer us a trade,
Starting point is 00:54:22 which according to Mike, he's already had calls on that. So it's like even though Mike's saying that the purpose of DFAing him was to essentially let him understand that he could be passed by by all 30 baseball teams and then come back here, essentially meaning that, look, your value is so low based on how bad you've been at the plate that nobody else wants to pick you up. And again, just kind of sending that message to him. There obviously is something there that they feel like Alec is going to be sent down and maybe just kind of have a bad attitude about it.
Starting point is 00:54:55 That's almost what he's insinuating. And I don't feel that's the case. I don't feel like that's what they actually think. But this like this seemed to be far more than just wanting to send him down for him to understand that he has, not made sufficient progress as a major leaguer. And at this point, we have to turn to somebody else that's doing better in order for the major league team to win baseball games. But then he also says that he's had interest in him. So even though he's saying he wants to almost like make Alec understand his value, it doesn't sound like Alec is going to get passed by 29 teams and come
Starting point is 00:55:32 back to this team and clear waivers and be a diamond back again. It very much sounds like several teams are interested and have called Mike about figuring out a trade for Alec at this point. And now that's where we're at. So I guess your confusion is kind of warranted because based on him saying those two things and answering the second question that he was asked there, yes, that's what you were going to do with AT. And I still think that part of this is to give him an opportunity elsewhere to try to flourish and, you know, further his career. So my first question of is this out of respect for Alec? The answer is yes to that. They're giving him an opportunity to potentially go play major league baseball elsewhere
Starting point is 00:56:13 rather than be on the Reno Aces. So I guess what I was saying is I'd rather Mike came out and was more direct about saying something like that because I'm confused because it feels like there it's like, you know, like the Diamondbacks could use him in the organization potentially. But I guess this is a situation where they feel like they owe it to Alec to. allow him to have that opportunity. And then if he doesn't get picked up, then it is that wake up call that you talked about.
Starting point is 00:56:44 If that's, do you agree with that? I guess, does that? No, your assessment is spot on as far as what I took away from it too. Yeah. I just think it's. I'm just confused by like,
Starting point is 00:56:55 we're not acting in the best interest of the Diamondbacks. We're acting in the best interest of Alec Thomas. Because that's, I don't think that you often see that in, you are. You're right. In major league baseball, if that's the case.
Starting point is 00:57:05 And I'd kind of rather that, it was a little bit more of a direct statement of that because that's all that was confusing. And I'm honestly, I'm not that mad at it. We'd still trade him. You know, if he, if a team claims him right. And, you know, Alec did have huge moments for this team that, you know, I think go down in Diamondbacks history. So you're not going to get a ton in a trade for him.
Starting point is 00:57:29 And, you know, maybe it is just best to do things out of respect here. Well, book's journey and me are kind of on the same page. But this is purely speculation from my. Park books journey, but he says, Mike also seems pissed that Alec must think everything is doing is enough, but they aren't on the same page. And again, that's fair too. I think that I can see that based off that answer now that you're saying that, I could definitely maybe gather that sentiment. Yeah. And I mean, it is. It's like two things. But it also feels to me, like, and this is probably not the right metaphor, but this feels like when you're in relationship and you want to break up with your girlfriend,
Starting point is 00:58:07 just so that she understands that, like, oh, it's not going to be as easy out there finding someone else. And 24 hours later, she's on another date. Like, that's what this feels like almost. This almost feels like you're trying to teach Alec a lesson and you want him to see that when we DFA him, he's going to be passed up by all these teams and come back to this organization. And then he immediately says he's already received calls on him. So it's like, yeah, no, Alec is going to be gone before we know it, most likely. And, you know, Again, he talked about basically there's seven days to clear waivers, but it's more like five days because stuff happens before you get to that point. And this decision to DFA Alec was probably made long before today or yesterday because the Alec was told last night by Mike Hazen.
Starting point is 00:58:55 So there's a good chance. This decision has been in the works for a while. But it is what it is. It just sucks. And I think at the end of the day, it's hard, man. It's really hard. What we want is for Alec Thomas to go, to wish Alec Thomas the best and to have Alec Thomas do well and make us add him to the pile of players that used to play here that went somewhere else and became a stud. And I hope that for Alec.
Starting point is 00:59:21 I think there comes a time where like it's just, you know, it's not working out, right? And this feels like that time with Alec Thomas where, you know, even if he got another chance, you know, with some starting time with the debacks later this year. you don't believe in him long term anymore you've given him so many opportunities and he's just not been the hitter that you you've you thought he could maybe be yeah and it's it stinks but maybe he finds that elsewhere but i don't think that you can rely on him and and trust him anymore and so i you know that's where you you you you shake hands and you know you bid a do and you say i we wish you the best of luck and we always will appreciate the moments and we we love the guy right Like we always bought in on the person.
Starting point is 01:00:06 Oh, yeah. And Alec Thomas is a player that, you know, I've maybe like, you know, this is not to like say that he's like a massive bust because he played major league baseball. But like I've maybe like never been more like confident in a player that like didn't end up really working out long term than I was about a with a prospect like Alec Thomas. Like I was like this guy is our center fielder for so long. And it just it hurts, man. It really does hurt to see him go. But it was time. want to say one thing just in case I don't get a chance to say it again. Alex's wife is amazing.
Starting point is 01:00:40 She's incredible. She's been incredibly supportive of him, but she's also kind of helped us out on this show. We've had a few conversations about Alec and things going on. And like, again, she's a real one. And when Tori brought up, like watching Alec grow up, watching him and, you know, watching him get engaged and then get married. All of that is what makes all of this so hard. And you and I have been having this compliment or conversation about, you know, sentimental, you know, players and guys that make it hard to get rid of them based on your like emotional connection to them. At the end of the day, this is a business. And in order to get better, you can't have those emotional connections. Maybe you can if you win a World Series and you let some of those guys stick around for too long or
Starting point is 01:01:30 whatever. But in this case, we're almost doing that with a team that made it to the World Series and didn't win it. And we still feel like deep down inside that that team could still win a World Series. The fact is, is that they probably can't. They probably got themselves on a pretty lucky fun run that particular postseason. And some things need to be done in order to make this team substantially better. You have to feel like some of the pieces here, especially the young pieces like Walt Schmidt and Fernandez, Corman Carroll, obviously Ryan Nelson and the way he pitched tonight, all of these guys are going to help this team win a lot of baseball games this year. But offensively right now, they need to figure so much out because I just, I don't
Starting point is 01:02:14 even understand what's wrong with them. At least tonight, they were a little more patient than they've been in the past two games, but still one run in nine innings and a loss in 10. So we're going to take a quick break. On the other side of this break, we're going to just a couple more minutes. We've got to take a look at some really pretty bats that Louisville Slugger made for the Arizona Diamondbacks in honor of Mother's Day. And I am going to squash this whole thing between Damon and I once and for all. Don't you guys go anywhere? You're watching the PH&X Diamondback Show. Starting point is 01:03:57 And look, I'm about to crack open both of these Casa Amigos Margarita and me and Damon are going to celebrate a Friday night properly. But we've been advised to at least wait until the World Cup comes around. I don't know if I can do that. But I will be drinking these margaritas when the World Cup is here. And these are ready to go marg, meaning we don't have to do anything. This isn't just, this isn't just mix. This got tequila in it. It's got Blanco tequila, lime juice, natural flavors.
Starting point is 01:04:23 Spicy like me, original like Damon. Actually, no, that's probably reversed. He's the spicy one. But two flavors, and they're made with the best simple ingredients. You know it. You know I'm the spicy one because I was about to fight you over that. I know. I had to reverse that.
Starting point is 01:04:36 No, he's going to come for me right now. To be fair, we're spicy. We both are. Yeah, well, just 110 calories per serving. Keep you slim. Made with real juice. And of course, pair your World Cup watch party food with a delicious new, ready to go, Casa Amigos, Margarita.
Starting point is 01:04:52 Casa Amigos, the drink of the World Cup, whether you're at your favorite spot or stocking up for home. make it a Casa Amigos. Damon, it is Mother's Day weekend. I think I nailed the Mother's Day gift for my wife. By the way, when you are a dad, you have a daughter. Even when she's 15, you still have to buy the Mother's Day gifts. I don't know how that's a thing.
Starting point is 01:05:14 I don't feel like that's right. But Louisville Slugger did make some beautiful Mother's Day bats for the Diamondbacks players, and they sent us over a video of them making those bats. Let's take a look at that beautiful pink bat footage. That Corby and Carroll signature. That was hot. That was a hot reveal right there. Yeah, that was like ASMR for baseball lovers, right?
Starting point is 01:05:37 Good stuff. I, look, I enjoy this job a lot. I've often told people that this is the greatest job I could ever hope for and I've ever had. But I won't lie. After my extensive power was simulator experience on the PlayStation 5, Damon, that looks like the perfect job for me. That looks like the job I want. That looks like heaven.
Starting point is 01:05:58 look like a good job. Like it's, it's like, that's one of those jobs where it's like, just so satisfying. That's like going to be my new like, like when things are rough around the office here where I'm like, I could just leave it all behind and make bats at Louisville Slugger, you know? Yeah, yeah, for sure. Well, it's one of those, it's one of those jobs. Just wipe, wipe the mentals and just that's, all I do is bats. Yeah. You're not wrong. Well, of course, we want to wish all of the mothers out there. I know we have some mothers that join us all the time in this chat. You guys are, the best. We thank you so much for being moms and we love you for it. And I hope you all have a good gift for your mothers. Now, I know Damon is not my mother, but we did get into it this week
Starting point is 01:06:38 because we're heated and we're upset about our team. And we even talked about possibly getting each other a gift in order to kind of balance out this weird animosity between us. And Damon, I've done exactly that. Thanks to the fine folks at the Arizona Diamondbacks. I brought you a gift tonight. And it's probably the best gift that anybody's ever gotten you in the history of you existing on planet Earth, Damon. I'm empty handed. I mean, it's fine because this was a surprise and this wasn't intended necessarily to be like a tit for tat kind of situation. This was definitely me just surprising you with something, but based on all of your hard work and all of my love for you, and I got you a perdomo chain, Damon, from the Arizona Diamondbacks Kids Club. Derek, you want to know
Starting point is 01:07:24 what number I used to wear? What number did you wear? Tell me, buddy. I used to wear number two. My whole life. I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was a number, number two. Derek is anointing the chain on me. That's special.
Starting point is 01:07:36 Isn't that good? That is special. I mean, it's probably going to turn your neck green, but it's worth it. Yeah, new podcast, new podcasting prop. I mean, this is unbelievable. I don't know how to connect these things. I think I can get it. You can go back, sit down.
Starting point is 01:07:49 Yeah. Well, I mean, what a gift from my guy, Derek. You know, my, my, my, my, my, My boy, Geraldo Prudomo, would have been a little bit more special if he got that knock with bases loaded. Yeah. And we were talking about him potentially, you know, having the game winning hit here tonight, Derek. But, you know, still appreciate it nonetheless. I think you rocking this chain is going to be the thing that turns everything around.
Starting point is 01:08:12 Yeah. You know, I think Prudomo is going to appreciate that, you know, the support is bigger than ever. And that's going to be the thing that wakes him up. But also, you're still very wrong about Carlos Santana. And I will, I will hold that. Here's the thing is that I think that today I was going to say this. I didn't know if when you brought up this conversation, if maybe you were going to apologize to me because of how right I was,
Starting point is 01:08:35 how wrong you were. Yeah, you're still on the team, buddy. We'll see. Oh, not yet. And all I was saying is that I think he could be DFA. I think DFAing Alec Thomas is proof enough that Carlos Santana very well could be DFA. I told you that earlier that I agree. Like, I do think that that was such a shocking.
Starting point is 01:08:54 move, we would have gotten to an argument about that the same night we got to a Carlos Santana argument. Because if you were like, they should TFA Alex Thomas. I mean, I would, I would have taken my chancel off and thrown it at you. So I mean, there's that. But hey, look at the Diamondbacks doing things that are fairly drastic in order to try to, I guess, win some baseball games. They have plenty of talent in their minor league system that are just sitting there waiting for an opportunity. And this was an example of that. And there are more guys that are still hitting down there. Not to mention Pavin Smith and Jordan Lawler still returning from injury as well as the aforementioned Carlos Santana and still a lot of decisions to be made.
Starting point is 01:09:34 So we'll see what happens when those guys return. But until then, you can follow Damon and I was just going to say major difference and this is where you might be right. And this is where I would be upset with the organization and start calling into question like what are we doing with leadership from a leadership perspective. if Carlos Santana, if they look at it and say, well, he hasn't been playing baseball enough of a sample size to lose his spot yet, where, you know, as Alec Thomas has been playing. And they're like, well, you can't lose your spot when you're injured. Also, also. But I would argue that he should, he should lose his spot based off of how bad he was over the very short sample size and that we have better options at this point. And that it's just a tough decision that has to be made.
Starting point is 01:10:18 I will say that there is the possibility that Santana might have had a nagging injury that they want to see him, quote, unquote, healthy before that. Like, maybe this was one of those things that, like, just was kind of a, not an injury, not like something that suddenly happened, but something that, you know, maybe wasn't feeling great. I still think that Corbin, after he returned from that lower back, you know, injury slash hit flexor thing, I still think that his slump there that he went through was due to that. you know but it's it's the rigors of the 162 game season and trying to get through it making the
Starting point is 01:10:56 determination if you're playing hurt or if you're playing injured right and that's the that's the two things there but we thank you guys for hanging out with us on a late friday night after a loss we know you have better things to do with your time but you chose to be here and we thank you for that your time is a valuable commodity we can't appreciate you enough for sharing it with us you can follow me on social media. I'm at cap underscore K-Ban with a K. Damon is at Damon Dog with a D-A-W-G. Make sure to respect the chain and
Starting point is 01:11:24 remember we're all Damon's dogs. Bark, bark. Our show is at P-H-N-X underscore D-Backs, but as always all roads lead to at P-H-N-X underscore sports on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. I'm tripped out, asks when Carlos is coming back anyway. He had, I think, what, three
Starting point is 01:11:40 stints, three rehab starts so far from Reno Aces, I believe, that the weird thing, that kind of... I heard they need veteran leadership in that locker room, Derek. Well, the thing that Damon said, it might be proving right.
Starting point is 01:11:53 And that's what I brought up too, right? That's where kind of some of the speculation about Santana came from. They're wording about Santana is just different than it is with your typical injured player. It is. They keep saying, like, we're going to see him have some rehab starts in Reno
Starting point is 01:12:06 and then reevaluate from there. They don't really do that with guys that are getting injured. They're usually like, we're going to send Lordustown to Reno for a couple of starts and then he'll be back to the main roster. That's kind of how they treat it.
Starting point is 01:12:16 So there might be some fire to the smoke Damon is seeing for sure. But my guy, Johnny Walker, friend from elementary school, just said suck it up. There it is. It's that simple. Thank you for your super chat, sir. And thank you for being so blunt. Suck it up, offense. Figure your shit out.
Starting point is 01:12:32 Get all of your shit together. Get your shit together. Put it in a bag. Take it somewhere. Flesh it. I don't know. Flush it? Don't flush it.
Starting point is 01:12:40 Take it to a shit museum. I don't care. Get your shit together, though. Figure it out. And hopefully, they can do it soon, soon, because tomorrow is Gabby Bumblehead night, and you don't want to disappoint the Mandalorian Gabby when he's protecting baby Grogu at all costs,
Starting point is 01:12:55 and then you can't lose in front of your moms. So let's get your shit together this weekend, Diamondbacks' offense. Thank you guys so much for your time. Appreciate you guys being here. We'll see you on Monday with another 12 p.m. show, and we might, just might, finally be joined by that Diamondbacks legend that I've been talking about for about two weeks now. So we'll see.
Starting point is 01:13:13 That might be the day. But until then, hope you guys all have a wonderful rest of your weekend. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. And remember, kids, baseball is fun, but it's so much more fun when your team can put up more than just one goddamn run.
